Severe weather costs Nassau Cruise Port 10,000 passengers

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Nassau Cruise Port’s top executive said that severe weather impacting The Bahamas in recent days cost the capital roughly 10,000 cruise visitors, with the cancellation of three calls this past Friday.

Mike Maura told Eyewitness News: We lost three calls last Friday due to the heavy winds. That said, we had five ships on Saturday and six on Sunday.” He noted that the cruise port has welcomed over 4.2 million passengers year-to-date.

In response to the adverse weather, which included rough seas, high swells, and strong winds, an MSC cruise ship that departed from New York City on Saturday adjusted its course. The ship rerouted to dock in New England instead of The Bahamas. MSC Cruises officially confirmed this change, specifying that the ship would be in Boston from Sunday to Tuesday and then proceed to Portland, Maine on Wednesday. Travelers were provided with the option to cancel their journey, and those who opted for cancellation were offered a credit for a future cruise.

Additionally, the Sky Princess, operated by the Carnival Corporation subsidiary Princess Cruises, had to alter its itinerary for passenger safety due to the severe weather affecting The Bahamas. The vessel was originally scheduled to call on Princess on Sunday, but underwent a reroute to ensure the well-being of passengers.

Passengers aboard a Carnival Cruise Line ship experienced a rough return to port in South Carolina as stormy weather brought heavy seas to the region.

Videos posted to social media showed high waves and large white caps rocking the cruise ship Carnival Sunshine as it returned to port in Charleston, South Carolina.

The ship’s return from a the Bahamas had been delayed by the storm, but the dark skies and rough seas remained when the ship approached the port of Charleston.

Several individuals aboard the ship took to social media to share photos and videos of the ordeal, a number of which showed broken glass, doors knocked out of their frames, and water damage in certain corridors of the ship.

A spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Line provided the following statement to FOX Business on Monday regarding the incident:

"Carnival Sunshine’s return to Charleston was impacted by the weather and rough seas on Saturday. The weather’s prolonged impact on the Charleston area delayed the ship’s arrival and as a result, the next voyage’s embarkation was also delayed. We appreciate the patience and understanding of all our guests. Carnival Sunshine is now sailing on its next cruise."

Carnival added in a statement to FOX Weather , "The weather and rough surf led to some crew cabins being temporarily taken out of service while we clean up water damage. All the public areas of the ship are open and in service and Carnival Sunshine is currently operating its next cruise, a five-day Bahamas sailing."

'I really thought I wasn't going to make it back': Carnival cruise ship rocked by weather

carnival cruise bahamas weather

A Carnival Cruise Line ship was rocked by rough weather on its way back to the U.S. over the weekend. Carnival Sunshine had been sailing on a round-trip Bahamas cruise from Charleston, South Carolina, when it got delayed ahead of its return Saturday.

“It felt like it was tilting all the way to one side at one point,” said Kathleen Meenan, a passenger who went on the cruise with her husband for their wedding anniversary. “I really thought I wasn't going to make it back to shore.”

Meenan, a 26-year-old social media strategist based in Charlotte, North Carolina, has been on several other cruises and said she is used to rocking in the waves but likened the sounds to the ship “being attacked.”

“It was shaking us so violently,” RJ Whited, another guest, told Charleston’s WCIV .

“The weather was unexpectedly strong, causing conditions that were rougher than forecasted,” a Carnival spokesperson said in an email. “Given the circumstances as they were, the ship’s officers and our Fleet Operations Center team coordinated to keep the ship in its safest location. Attempting to sail out of the large front could have been dangerous.”

The spokesperson said the ship went on to the port as soon as the weather started to clear. The ship’s arrival in Charleston was delayed, as was embarkation for the vessel’s following sailing. “We appreciate the patience and understanding of all our guests,” they said. The ship is currently on a five-day Bahamas sailing and will return to Charleston on Thursday.

Meenan said the crew announced that they were heading into some rough weather on Friday afternoon, advising them to hold onto handrails and warning of a potential delay, but did not communicate further until the following morning. “It felt like just being trapped,” she said.

The cruise line’s spokesperson said the captain “made several announcements about the weather and the delay it caused in returning to Charleston, asking guests to use extra precaution while walking around the ship.”

“Some of the worst weather occurred in the overnight hours when announcements are not typically made, but guests and crew were safe,” the spokesperson added. “The ship’s officers worked through the night to minimize discomfort as much as possible from the added movement caused by the rough ocean.”

Meenan also noted that the crew worked hard to make the remainder of the sailing pleasant for passengers. “Even the next day, they all had smiles on their faces and tried their best to make it a nice day for us,” she said.

While she said she will cruise again, it may take some time. “I think that it’s going to be a while,” Meenan said.

'Devastated': Passengers speak out after Bahamas-bound cruise diverted to New England, Canada over weather

Passengers had the option to cancel for future credit, the cruise line said.

Passengers of a cruise who were expecting a sunny getaway in the Bahamas this week were instead sailed to a much colder climate due to severe weather .

The MSC Meraviglia was forced to sail from Brooklyn, New York, to ports in New England and Canada on Saturday instead of its original destination in the Bahamas "due to unseasonable and rapidly worsening weather that would have made it impossible to safely reach the southern Atlantic Ocean from New York City," the MSC cruise line said in a statement to ABC News.

The move came after heavy storms struck the East Coast and the Bahamas causing flooding, power outages and several deaths.

"The only alternative would have been to take the more extreme step of canceling the cruise -- and thousands of people's vacations -- outright," MSC said.

"The complexities involved in obtaining last-minute berths for unplanned stops and provisioning the ship along its new route left sailing to Canada and New England as the only viable option," the cruise line added.

MSC also said it offered passengers a choice of sailing to the new destinations or canceling for future credit, "which allows them to put the full value paid for this cruise toward another at their convenience."

PHOTO: In this Jan. 30, 2022, file photo, people watch as the MSC Meraviglia cruise ship departs from Port Canaveral, Fla.

The MSC Meraviglia is slated to arrive in the Port of Saint John in Canada on Thursday, the port wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Speaking to "Good Morning America," Lakeya Allen, who said she arranged the trip with her best friend Val Montgomery as a joint family holiday to the Bahamas, said she was "devastated" by the divergence of the course.

"Good Morning America" airs at 7 a.m. ET on ABC.

"So this is some of my kids' Christmas gifts," she said. "[T]his was like, 'Hey, you guys, you got to go to [the] Bahamas.' We're from Chicago, so we wanted to change the weather. I never fathomed that we will be back in cold weather."

Allen and Montgomery said they have been planning for the trip for almost a year, since last February.

"When they first sent out that message, I wish they would have given us options right in that message and we could at least have a choice," Montgomery told ABC News. "We didn't have a choice at all."

Allen also said they were given such short notice about the decision to change course, saying, "It was beyond short. Yeah, it was unexpected."

As for the cruise, Montgomery said it's getting "a little depressing because you can imagine as we’re making the most of it, but most people are walking around in coats, gloves and hats."

The cruise ship can accommodate up to 5,624 passengers and 1,608 crew members, the cruise line says on its website . It was unclear how many passengers were aboard the rerouted Bahamas cruise.

Chris Gray Faust, executive editor of review site Cruise Critic, told ABC News this kind of scenario and decision to change the cruise's itinerary is "not necessarily out of the question," and that some other cruise lines were reportedly impacted by the inclement weather.

Faust said that cruise lines typically have a "contract of carriage" clause that doesn't guarantee the ports the ship will travel to and allows the cruise operator to change the itinerary for various issues, including weather.

"Generally weather in December is fairly stable in Florida and the Bahamas, but it has been rough last weekend in particular," she said.

A Guide to All 27 Carnival Cruise Ships

With 27 ships and hundreds of itineraries, there’s a Carnival cruise for everyone.

carnival cruise bahamas weather

Courtesy of Carnival Cruises

Carnival Cruise Line offers numerous cruise options worldwide with a fleet of 27 ships. Their cruises include all the hits: celebrity chef-driven restaurants, onboard rollercoasters, dedicated kids venues, serene spa moments, adults-exclusive pool decks, and exciting destinations. Carnival has it all — and can be relatively affordable. But which ship is right for you?

After sailing on eight Carnival cruises, including voyages on its oldest ship, Carnival Elation , and the newer Carnival Celebration, I’ve learned that sailing on newer ships is generally more expensive, and older vessels are more budget-friendly. However, I often consider more than the total cost before booking a cruise. I look at the ports of call, the space-to-guest ratio, the amenities and onboard activities, and the launch point.

When I select a sailing, I book through Carnival Cruise Line’s reservation number to see if I can snag an exclusive deal not listed online. Carnival's free-to-join loyalty program, the Very Important Fun Person (VIFP) Club, offers deals like reduced deposits, onboard credit, and room upgrades. The more you book with the cruise line, the better your deals will be.

Before committing to a cruise, I break down the price per person per night, particularly if I need multiple cabins because I'm traveling with a group. I recommend you take advantage of Carnival's convenient 24-hour reservation hold, which displays the total cost, itinerary, and a countdown timer so you know when to purchase to secure the locked-in price.

Here, find guidance on every Carnival cruise ship, from the newest to the oldest.

Across Firenze , you’ll see touches of Italy; think cute cafe set-ups that look like they were picked up from a Florence sidewalk. Initially built in 2019 for Costa Cruises, this ship joined the Carnival fleet in 2023. Carnival Venezia is ideal if you’re looking for a ship that celebrates one of Italy’s most iconic cities. Venice is the inspiration behind the indoor and outdoor areas, including the atrium, modeled after Piazza San Marco, and the Carnevale Lounge, inspired by Venetian masquerades. Don't miss the Venetian Toast, where the ship’s captain greets guests and crew don Venetian masks.

Carnival Celebration

Inaugural Year: 2022

Standout Amenities: Space Cruisers, a kids camp in partnership with Kennedy Space Center; The Golden Jubilee Bar for vintage cocktails; BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster

Carnival Celebration is all about never-ending good times. During my recent sailing, I found all the Carnival classics, like the Alchemy Bar and Guy’s Burger Joint, a thrilling ropes course, dive-in movies, and plenty of themed deck parties. If you’re looking to relax, it has that, too. Rent cabanas or lounge in the ocean-view whirlpools at Loft 19, where attentive staff take care of everything, like delivering you fruit and chilled towels. My favorite spot to hang out was the aft Patio Pool because it wasn't ever super crowded, and the view of the ocean was unmatched.

Standout Amenities: Carnival fan-favorite Alchemy Bar; Circle “C” tween club; Cloud 9 Spa hydrotherapy pool for rejuvenating soaks

Carnival Mardi Gras is a nod to Carnival’s first ship, also named Mardi Gras, which was launched in 1972. The vessel has six onboard zones where families can have fun together, including the Ultimate Playground, where BOLT and the SportsSquare are located. Of course, there’s no Mardi Gras without New Orleans, so the French Quarter zone is where you’ll find Big Easy-inspired amenities like an Emeril Lagasse restaurant.

Carnival Radiance

Ship Capacity: 2,984 double occupancy; 3,873 total guests

Carnival Panorama is smaller than today's mega-ships, but it packs a ton of fun into its 15 decks. Rooms are spacious; some come with exclusive perks like access to the Havana Pool area or unlimited use of the spa’s thermal suites. Kids will also love that there’s an onboard waterpark, kids club, and a Build-a-Bear Workshop at Sea.

Carnival Sunrise

Ship Capacity: 2,984 double occupancy; 3,973 total guests

Standout Amenities: Cloud 9 Spa cabins with access to the thermal suites; Lucky Bowl restaurant, which is only on Carnival Sunrise and only open for lunch

Ship Capacity: 3,960 double occupancy; 4,977 total guests

Standout Amenities: IMAX movie theater for a family night out; Dr. Suess Bookville for family story time and character appearances; volleyball court where adults can test their skills or just hit the ball around

Ship Capacity: 3,002 double occupancy; 3,758 total guests

Standout Amenities: Carnival WaterWorks with multiple slides and water features; BlueIguana Tequila Bar for poolside libations; an onboard steakhouse with a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for its exceptional wine list

Carnival Sunshine (formerly Carnival Destiny ) is 10 years old and a fan favorite. The lower guest capacity, at just over 3,000 for double occupancy, means you won’t have to fight hoards of people to get to and from activities. Families who want even more cabin space should book one of the aft-view extended balcony rooms with great wake views and ample private outdoor space.

Carnival Breeze

Inaugural Year: 2012

Ship Class: Dream Class

Ship Capacity: 3,690 double occupancy; 4,724 total guests

Standout Amenities: Cloud 9 Spa for next-level relaxation; Mongolian Wok lunch restaurant; pickleball courts to get competitive with your family; waterslides

Carnival Magic sails for a week or more from Miami, Florida. The ship debuted the restaurant Cucina del Capitano, which is now onboard multiple ships in the fleet. It’s also home to the original Guy’s Pig & Anchor. I sailed the Carnival Magic years ago, but I vividly remember spending an entire day enjoying the amenities at the Cloud 9 Spa and eating at the Mongolian Wok quick-service restaurant almost every afternoon for lunch.

Carnival Dream

Inaugural Year: 2009

Ship Capacity: 3,646 double occupancy; 4,631 total guests

Standout Amenities: Ocean Plaza, a multi-use entertainment venue that’s family-friendly during the day and a nightclub after dark; Guy’s Burger Joint for standout smash burgers; Cloud 9 Spa for adults to relax

Ship Class: Splendor Class

Ship Capacity: 3,012 double occupancy; 3,734 total guests

Standout Amenities: Masala Tiger Indian restaurant, which is only open for lunch and only on this ship; a mini-golf course; a pool with a retractable cover

Carnival Splendor sails the Southern Hemisphere around Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific on cruises that range from two to 10 days. The ship has Carnival’s only quick-service Indian restaurant and boasts a pool with a retractable roof, so you can swim without worrying about the weather.

Standout Amenities: Space Cruisers kids program in partnership with Kennedy Space Center; RedFrog Pub, with Key West-inspired food and drinks; Dr. Seuss Bookville, a kids library that's themed after the famous author’s characters

Carnival Freedom is ideal for first-time cruisers because of the lower guest capacity and the smaller ship size. But don’t let the numbers fool you; this ship is packed with high-energy activities for all ages; from the kid's clubs to the casino, there’s no lack of fun to be had.

Fantasy worlds and elements inspired Carnival Miracle . Around the ship, you’ll find spaces like Phantom Lounge and Dr. Frankenstein’s Lab, where you can see shows or dance the night away. When you’re ready to soak up the sun, find a lounge chair at the adults-only pool deck or splash down on one of the slides at WaterWorks.

Ship Capacity: 2,052 double occupancy; 2,606 total guests

Standout Amenities: Serenity Adult-Only Retreat when you need a place without kids; twin racing waterslides for all ages

With two to nine-day cruises from Tampa to the Caribbean and the Bahamas, Carnival Paradise literally takes cruisers to paradise islands. The ship brims with fun amenities like the WaterWorks splash zone and the relaxing Cloud 9 Spa.

Carnival Elation

Ship Capacity: 2,052 double occupancy; 2,606 total guests

Standout Amenities: Duke’s Piano Bar for nightly sing-a-longs; Alchemy Bar for custom cocktails; BlueIguana Cantina for breakfast and lunch options with a Mexican twist

Carnival Elation is currently the fleet's oldest ship, debuting in March 1998, and the only cruise ship from any cruise line that sails from Jacksonville, Florida. Even though the ship is small, with a total guest capacity of 2,606, it’s ideal for a quick weekend away if you want a mix of relaxation and high-energy activities. I've sailed the most on Carnival Elation since the ship sails from my hometown of Jacksonville. Even though it's the oldest in the fleet, I love that the sailings are short weekend trips where I can sit outside in the sun enjoying a Guy's Burger Joint smash burger before heading inside to see a show or play bingo. And because the ship is so small, it's easy to navigate, and I always end up making friends with the delightful crew onboard.

Brevard couple seeking retribution after Carnival cruise passengers return to flooded cars

carnival cruise bahamas weather

Exactly two weeks before Christmas, Brevard's Wesley and Stephanie Royal arrived back at the Port of Charleston in South Carolina following a four-night cruise to the Bahamas aboard the Carnival Cruise Sunshine.

When they got to the parking lot where their vehicle was, they were shocked. A storm had passed through the Charleston area a few days before, dumping over 4 inches of rain, and since the parking lot was so close to the shore, all the cars in the lot received storm damage from the saltwater, Stephanie Royal said.

"Over 400 cars were affected by the damage due to saltwater," she told the Times-News on Dec. 23.

None of the cars would start.

A long way home

Like all of the other passengers who parked in the lot damaged by the storm, the Royals had to scramble to figure out what to do so they could get back home when they encountered the shocking state of their cars at the port.

Stephanie Royal said no one was informed that their cars had received so much damage.

"When we came off the ship, none of the carnival staff informed us that this had occurred. The captain and crew on the ship didn't inform us either. Once we were rushed off the ship after being delayed 6 hours and got back to the lot, the Port Authority didn't inform us either," she said.

The bad weather didn't just affect the cars. The Royals said it was rough weather during most of the cruise, too, which made the return to Charleston delayed.

"We were originally due back at port by 7 a.m., but due to weather, we were delayed six hours, which put us back at port around 1 p.m. From 1-4 p.m. we were stranded," Stephanie Royal said. "We managed to get a rideshare to the airport for a car rental. We returned to the parking lot at 6 p.m. to get our belongings from my car. People were still stranded waiting on help."

She said she and her husband drove back to Brevard that evening and got home after 11 p.m. That was after spending $55 for a rideshare to the airport and an additional $400 for a rental car to get back home.

Who is responsible?

So far, South Carolina Ports Authority has only issued a refund of the parking fee, Stephanie Royal said.

"We got a parking refund but that's it. We're still waiting on final closure of our totaled vehicle from the insurance company.

According to past reporting by USA TODAY , a spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Lines said in an emailed statement, “We regret that some of our guests’ vehicles parked in the port’s lot were impacted by the recent storm.”

The cruise line then suggested passengers contact the South Carolina Ports Authority, since the parking lot was not a Carnival facility.

More: Excluding restaurants, businesses that opened, closed in Hendersonville in 2023

According to an article in the Charleston Post and Courier, the South Carolina Ports Authority said it isn’t responsible for the hundreds of cars damaged but did provide documentation vehicle owners can use to file insurance claims. The Ports Authority then refunded parking fees and allowed the vehicle owners to leave their cars in the lot for as long as they needed to.

"In my opinion isn't nearly enough to cover the length of getting back home and being stranded in an area we do not know well. I have also issued a complaint to the town of Charleston to make changes in how they handle parking there," Stephanie Royal said.

The Times-News reached out to the South Carolina Ports Authority on Jan. 2 but didn't receive a reply. There is a notice to cruise passengers on the Ports Authority's website, informing them that they are "parking at their own risk."

"SCPA assumes no liability for theft, collision, accidents, fire or other damages of any kind to personal property from any cause whatsoever. SCPA assumes no responsibility or liability for property left in a vehicle,"the website says.

Stephanie Royal said passengers leaving for the Carnival cruise out of Charleston are forced to park in one of the Ports Authority parking lots, which are at sea level.

"We have no choice as passengers but to park there to board the ship. We even had a rough cruise due to the weather, which didn't make the return any better," she said.

'A mess that could've been prevented'

Stephanie Royal is hoping the incident will cause big changes for the cruise parking in the Charleston area.

"There are a lot of people that do not know how bad this area can flood but the Port Authority doesn't inform the public about it, either. We have been trying to let the public know that this is the way it will be until they close it down in December 2024.

"We feel as though not enough was done, and this mess could have been prevented. They were well informed bad weather was coming but didn't take the necessary parking precautions. The lack of communication between the ship crew and port authorities is beyond terrible."

More: Henderson Co. Health Dept. confirms first flu-related death of the 2023-24 flu season

Royal believes the crew could have informed the passengers what was happening so that they would have information before leaving the ship.

"It's apparent that the Carnival crew at debarkation was informed not to say anything to us because of fear of passengers bombarding them for help and information," she said. "At the very least the Port Authority employees in the parking area could have informed us once we got on their lot. It was up to us to find that our cars were flooded and totaled. We are hoping to share this information to forewarn future passengers boarding the Carnival cruise line and parking in this area."

January/Bahamas weather ?

Cool Cruiser

alrighty then

Planning a cruise for the end of January from Charleston. I've only been in the summer before. What is the weather usually like in January/February in the Bahamas? Is the water warm enough to get in and swim? Is it still "bathing suit" weather on the beaches?

Thanks so much!!

We cruised almost two years ago in January (Nassau, Grand Turk, Half Moon Cay). We packed some long sleeve shirts and pants but didn't need them. We did swim - as did many others. The weather was typical summer weather (we live in VA) in our opinions. Some of the evenings were cool-ish but never cold. I hope that helps!!! :)

Years ago I spent a month in the Bahammas for work (it was a sacrafice but someone had to do it ;)). I was there from end of Dec through the beginning of February and when we weren't working we were at the beach snorkelling or hanging out along with plenty of other folks. There were a couple of days it actually got down in the 60's (and the locals were actually wearing full winter coats!!!) but other than that the weather was perfect for being out in the sun and water. :)

3,000+ Club

Went to Nassau on a cruise in Jan. 2011. The weather was low 70's with the water plenty warm enough to swim. The ocean wasn't quite as warm as St. Thomas/St. Maarten but still nice.

It just depends. You probably won't need a parka.

The water can be considerably colder than mid-summer. But I've been in mid-December a few times and still went in the water. Been there a few days after a storm came through and the water was cool but the sun was warm.

I mean, if I went to Miami at that time of year, would I expect winter weather? Probably not. I do take a lightweight rain jacket as I've encountered some rainy days (more than the usual occasional shower during May/June).

Chances are you won't get much sunning done on the Lido deck on the first and last days, though. I've sailed from Jacksonville twice in late Nov/mid Dec and it was rather brisk out there.

I've been to the Bahamas twice in January. In 2010, it was on the cool side. We went snorkeling but were shivering when we got out. The sea water was chilly.

January 2012, it was very nice. Not too hot but a comfortable time for shorts/tanks, etc. My sister-in-law got a sunburn actually lol

So it really depends. I'll be in Jamaica this January and am PRAYING for nice weather like the January I went to Cozumel. A little on the hot side, perfect for the beach, and got a nice tan! :)

30,000+ Club

In the Bahamas the sea temps are always WAY too chilly for me in January.

(Before all of the private cruise ship islands it was often the last stop before returning to Florida from longer cruises so have been to Nassau frequently in Jan/Feb.)

Unless it's a windy rainy day, it's normally great for shorts. Sometimes, nice beach days if you don't spend much time in the water. :)

Not to worry! Jamaica in January is like the end of June at "The Shore".

Jamaica in Jan. should be gorgeous. Winter weather should be low 80s by day to low 70s at night with a near constant trade wind. I lived on St. Croix for 10 years and often during the winter we had just one door cracked open just a little to keep the house cool. The Bahamas are frequently billed as tropical islands but they're really not. They're just a little north of the Tropic of Cancer. Jamica is an actual tropical island with tropical weather.

We went on the Fascination 4 day in Feb 2011 and while it was somewhat warm and sunny (70s), the water was too cool for my tastes and there weren't many people in the water (we went to Our Lucaya in Freeport, but stayed on the ship in Nassau and enjoyed the hot tub on the Serenity Deck...and it was chilly to get out of hot tub and go to chair for towel).

Picture of me at Our Lucaya that day.

Oh, and it was cool the day we got on the ship in Jax port...very chilly and windy (see pic)

coevan

I personally would not cruise the Bahamas in the winter. I am a diver and the water temp will be high 60'-low 70's. That is wet suit weather for me. Even though Miami and Bahamas are about the same latitude, Miami's water is much colder then the Bahamas, although it does not seem to effect snowbirds. When we lived in Miami we were wearing jackets in the 60's. The Virgin Islands are almost 1000 miles south of Miami and the Bahamas.

Could be in the 70s

also could be in the 80's (-:

Have been to Bahamas a couple or three times in January. Have been there when it was nice and warm and been there when the highs was only in the 60's. A good way to figure it is what ever the weather is in Miami then that will be your weather in Nassau.

This is so true! Too often people think Nassau is way south of Miami. It's not!

Water was CHILLY at Disney's private island in January of 2012.

We only did the Bahamas once--January of 2008 I believe. It was cold (and we're from Minnesota). During sail away, we had our winter coats on while on deck and went for the hot chocolate instead of other drinks. It was still on the chilly side when we got to Freeport, but by the time we reached Nassau, it had warmed up a bit.

We'll be in Nassau again this coming January and I'm hoping for better weather.

‘Can we get a do-over?’: Traveler calls out Carnival Freedom cruise. Here’s why

'i was just in a carnival cruise and the same thing happened to me'.

A Carnival Freedom cruise traveler posted a viral video complaining that the ship didn’t drop them off at one of the scheduled ports.

TikToker @destinationftk has reached over 351,000 views and 1,300 likes on her video by Wednesday. She captioned her video, “Carnival Freedom was a BUST. Can we get a do-over?!”

@destinationftk starts her video by telling the audience that the cruise did not stop in Grand Turk, an island in Turks and Caicos, as it was scheduled to the day prior.

“They said that the wind was up too high for us to dock safely,” she says.

Next, she says, “Today, they done brought us through the Bahamas. But they ain’t stop.”

“We is tired of being on this damn boat,” she continues. “They couldn’t stop nowhere and let us out for a while? I don’t believe it.”

Her next complaint is that Carnival brought the ship through the Bahamas rather than taking another route.

“‘Cause you didn’t have to go this way to take us home. You could have went around,” she says.

@destinationftk tells Carnival, “I’m feeling some type of way.” She says the only thing travelers have received so far for a refund is “$16 for the taxes, the port fees.”

“We can’t even buy a drink for that,” she adds.

Then she asks, “Carnival, what is y’all gonna do? I’mma need you to check the books and see what y’all got for us because, baby, this ain’t gonna do.”

She says that she’s been on the ship “all day, every day” and has “only had one stop.”

“And I’m sad about that,” she says. “People’s was telling us how pretty and beautiful it was, and all of that stuff, and we ain’t even get to see it.”

Before ending her video, @destinationftk says she will be booking another cruise in hopes of still visiting Grand Turk.

“So what y’all gonna do?” she asks.

Viewers in the comments section gave @destinationftk tips on booking her next cruise.

“Do not choose this season again to travel by cruise, the weather is very changeable. I am from the Caribbean, the best months are between March to June and October to November,” one said.

Another viewer joked, “Dang… Carnival control the weather will ya??”

“Cruise documents ports aren’t promised. That’s why they give you the port fees back,” one added.

The Daily Dot reached out to Carnival Cruise Line via email and @destinationftk via TikTok comment for more information.

In recent headlines, a traveler called out Carnival for inconsistent information at the front desk, and another says Carnival cut them off at the bar even though they purchased the drink package.

Florida woman found dead on cruise ship, Bahamas police say

By Alex Sundby

March 13, 2024 / 7:19 PM EDT / CBS News

A 27-year-old Florida woman traveling to the Bahamas on a cruise ship was found dead in her cabin, police said. The Royal Bahamas Police Force said it was investigating the unidentified woman's death and that an autopsy will be conducted to determine how she died.

Police on the island of Grand Bahama were told Monday the woman was found unresponsive in her cabin on an unidentified cruise line en route to the nation in the West Indies, the agency said in a statement Tuesday.

Medical personnel on the ship performed CPR on the woman, police said. They weren't able to revive her, and she was declared dead.

Officers found a substance suspected of being cocaine in the cabin and arrested an unidentified 32-year-old Florida man on an unspecified charge, police said.

Port Lucaya Marina is seen in Freeport, Bahamas, on Feb. 6, 2011.

In the Bahamas, 18 killings in January spurred the U.S. Embassy in the capital of Nassau to urge Americans to exercise caution in parts of the country.

"Murders have occurred at all hours including in broad daylight on the streets," the embassy said on its website .

The U.S. State Department issued a travel advisory because of the violence. In response, the Bahamian government said the killings did not reflect the country's safety and announced new initiatives to reduce crime.

"The safety and security of everyone is of paramount importance to us and we are confident that The Bahamas will remain safe and welcoming for millions of visitors to continue to enjoy the magic and beauty of our beautiful islands," the prime minister's office said in a statement .

According to figures released by the country's tourism ministry , over 9.6 million people visited the country last year, an increase from 2022.

Most of those tourists —over 7.9 million people— arrived in the country by sea, an increase from over 5.5 million in 2022, the tourism ministry said.

Royal Caribbean announced suspensions of planned stops to Labadee, the cruise line’s private resort on Haiti’s northern shore, in the wake of continued violence and lawlessness in the island nation.

The announcement on Thursday came a day after Royal Caribbean said it would continue stopping at its private resort while “monitoring” for safety threats.

“The safety and security of our guests, crew, and communities we visit are our top priority. Our Global Security and Intel Team is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Haiti, and in an abundance of caution, we are temporarily making adjustments to sailings visiting Labadee,” the cruise line announced.

So far, the suspension is in effect until March 22, the cruise line said. Plans beyond that date will be announced as decisions are made.

“We will continue to monitor and reassess calls as needed, and will communicate updates with guests directly,” the statement said.

The U.S. State Department has maintained a “Do Not Travel” advisory for Haiti since July 27, 2023, due to kidnapping, crime, civil unrest, and poor health care infrastructure. “Kidnapping is widespread and victims regularly include U.S. citizens,” the alert states.

The situation took a turn for the worse in early March as gangs attacked government buildings and the National Penitentiary, releasing an estimated 4,000 inmates. This week, Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced his resignation.

Labadee is an enclosed resort, built on a peninsula accessible only to Royal Caribbean guests and employees, that the cruise line has leased since the 1980s. The 260-acre property is located about 130 miles north of Port-au-Prince, where most of the violence is taking place. Travel by car from the capital to the resort takes six to eight hours.

The resort features a roller coaster, fishing and jet-ski areas, cabanas and beach access. Private security protects cruise ship customers when Royal Caribbean’s ships stop there.

Itineraries of six ships that sail from Florida ports will be affected by the suspension, which is scheduled to last through March 22.

Symphony of the Seas , departing Port Everglades on March 18. Labadee stop replaced by a sea day. Falmouth, Jamaica call time adjusted to 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Explorer of the Seas , departing Port Miami on March 17. Labadee stop replaced by Perfect Day at Coco Cay with a call time of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Oasis of the Seas , departing Port Miami on March 17. Labadee stop replaced by Falmouth, Jamaica, with a call time of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Grandeur of the Seas , departing Port Miami on March 18. Labadee stop replaced by Perfect Day at CocoCay with a call time of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Adventure of the Seas , departing Port Canaveral on March 15. Labadee stop replaced by Grand Turk with a call time of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mariner of the Seas , departing Port Canaveral on March 16. Labadee stop replaced by Nassau, Bahamas with a call time of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This is not the first time Royal Caribbean has suspended stops to Labadee because of unrest in Haiti.

In 2016, the cruise line canceled three stops  after encountering local residents in small boats staging a protest.

9 Reasons Why A Carnival Cruise Is Educational For Kids

C an your family learn while taking a cruise? YES! We have 9 reasons why a Carnival Cruise is educational for kids.  As a mom who also happens to be a teacher, I am always on the lookout to find ways to combine our love of travel with learning and when you cruise with Carnival, you are not only choosing fun but you’re choosing an unprecedented way to bring education into your family’s life in a fun and unexpected ways.  In my classroom, I have two mantras that hang and have been a part of my teaching style for 35 years. One simply states that “The child who has fun learning will be a success in life.” The other is an old proverb, “I Hear and I Forget, I See and I Remember, I Do and I Understand” and nowhere is this more true than when you sail away with Carnival Cruises. One of the best ways to enjoy traveling as a family is to take a cruise.

From the time you board, until the time you disembark and look back on the countless memories that you’ve made, cruising with Carnival is the perfect way to combine a love of learning with multiple learning experiences all while still being on vacation.  Although I can think of 100’s of ways your family can learn while having fun, I’ve narrowed it down to my top 9 reasons why a Carnival Cruise is educational for kids.

On A Cruise, Everyone Is A Teacher

When you sail Carnival Cruise you bring the world to you  A cruise ship is a rare place where people from all over the four corners of the universe come together to form one big family and now you are a part of the family With the ship’s crew

coming from all over the world, this provides your children the opportunity to meet and mingle with people from a great variety of cultural backgrounds and you will quickly discover that the other guests are also likely to come from a wide variety of backgrounds and places as well.

There is no place quite like a cruise to have the chance to really get to know those around you. Bring a world map with you and as you meet new people, as well as explore new places, have your kids add each new country or city to their map so they’ll become familiar with the names and locations.

Science, Math, and Geography All Rolled Into One

Everything about a ship is likely unfamiliar to your kids if they haven’t cruised before. They’ll learn about “port” and “starboard,” and experience the night sky in a new way.

If you bring along a map, they can plot your voyage and learn about travel variables such as distance and weather.

Even sitting on the balcony of your cabin can be a learning experience and are the perfect place for challenges. It’s the perfect time to put their math knowledge to work creating such mathematical equations such as: “How much distance will the ship cover if it maintains a cruising speed of 22 knots?

Could a jaguar keep pace with the cruise liner over a distance of 100m?” or figuring out how many gallons of ice cream will be consumed on this voyage and how much is that per person-the the list of possibilities is endless. How many geometrical shapes can you find in the skylight? What speed will you be traveling in order to make it from the top of

Twister to the bottom in under 10 seconds? It’s also the perfect place for family time as the ship’s library comes stocked with a wide variety of books and games.  Scrabble on the high sea-yes, please.

Onboard Activities Mean Onboard Learning

It is no secret that there are many cruise ships that offer onboard learning experiences for kids while en route to your destination but no one does it quite like Carnival. My love for all things Dr. Seuss knows no bounds and it is love that I handed down not just to my kids but my students as well and admit it, there isn’t a person alive that can’t quote “The Cat In The Hat” or “Go Dog Go”. With the  Seuss at Sea program you kids, as well as your entire family, have the unique opportunity to join in a number of educational activities

inspired by Dr. Seuss’s books, including a special onboard character parade, interactive storytime, and arts and crafts activities. Books allow children to enter a world of imagination and open the door to a lifelong love of learning and what better way to bring “Green Eggs and Ham” to life than by enjoying a real Green Eggs and Ham, along with other Seuss inspired food complete with the Cat In The Hat and Thing 1 and Thing 2.

I’m not sure who squealed more with delight-me or the kids but at the end of the day, aren’t we all kids at heart?

When you sail with Carnival, your children can also learn about the natural world in the Science and Discovery program  and  Camp Ocean.   Making volcanoes or learning about buoyancy is never this much fun in a classroom and isn’t that what real learning should be. Another benefit is that while your kids are “off at camp”, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy that lounge chair by the pool that has been calling your name

History Of Where We Came From Shows Us Where We’re Going

Every place has a story to tell and every destination presents an opportunity to learn and it all begins with the ship that you are sailing on.  The crew of every ship is more than happy to tell you the story of the origins and the backstory of your ship. When it comes time to dock for the day and head off to explore, each and every port is filled with rich facts and interesting past, and many shore excursions take you right to the historically important landmarks.

Before you embark on your trip, have your family work together to make a list of the things you want to find out from each port, or better yet, create a scavenger hunt., From trips to museums to local landmarks to the center of town, there is no better way for your kids to learn firsthand how each country was developed and how these events shaped a society different from their own.

It Is All About Embracing New Cultures.

“What I do I understand.” Learning about a region’s culture goes hand in hand with learning about its history.

Some of the most fun shore excursions for children are those that let them participate in or watch local customs such as parades, fiestas, and markets.

Each port allows for the opportunity to not just read about the cultures of the places you visit but live the cultures and experience these small slices of life. Encourage your children to be immersed in the cultures of where they are visiting, thus creating lifelong global learners.

Shore excursions also offer an excellent opportunity to introduce your kids to new foods. What they might not have tried at home may be more appealing in an unfamiliar environment.

Learning To Speak A New Language

If you’re cruising to Mexico or the Caribbean, your kids will encounter people who speak Spanish, and perhaps Dutch and French, depending on your ports of call. You might want to teach them a few basic words and phrases so they can interact with tour guides and locals. If they’re studying one of these languages at school, this is a great opportunity for them to practice.

Hands-On Science Reigns Supreme

Each region offers unique geographical features, many of which are outstandingly beautiful. Excursions take you to the area’s natural features, such as jungles, waterfalls, underground rivers and caves. Kids will enjoy exploring the ocean,

and snorkeling is ideal for viewing underwater sea life. These natural areas are inhabited by myriad species of plants and animals that are exciting to encounter for the first time.

One of the very best things you can do as a parent is to give your kids a love of travel. Travel makes us realize we live in a truly beautiful world, and it teaches us that, although not everyone in it is just like us, everyone and everything has

Shore Excursions Bring Learning To Life

Shore excursions are ideal for teaching opportunities. They engage all the senses, which help instill a deeper understanding of new places and things. Now instead of watching a movie on Sting Rays, you can get in the water and interact with Sting Rays. Learn how you can be a part of turtle conservation by visiting a turtle sanctuary.

Don’t just read about the rainforest, take a hike with a local guide, and see firsthand what the rain forest is all about or even better, harness up and soar over the treetops or the beach via a zipline or parasailing.

Making A Difference-Giving Back With Purpose

With a cruise as with travel, the learning never stops but rather it opens up the door to a world of discovery, exploration, and imagination. It is the opportunity to take you out of your customary range of familiarity and gives you an improved world-view. As part of your cruise planning, find children’s books about the locale you’ll be going by to give your children a presentation.

Onshore, search for social exercises –, for example, going by a historical center, watching a dance performance, shopping at a market, or trying new foods. While your children may love the idea about the possibility of splashing down a water-slide, what they are most likely to recall about the cruise experience is that they went by another all they were able to see and do and experience; in other words what they learned and what they will savor for many years to come.
