Creating an at-home spa experience is all about setting the right mood, incorporating relaxing elements, and taking the time to focus on yourself. The Average Cost Of Visiting A Spa

Spa

We all deserve a little pampering every now and then, and a visit to the spa can be just the ticket for some rest and relaxation. But how much does it cost on average? Well, that all depends on where you go and what services you choose. According to one statistic, the average cost of a 60-minute massage is $80-$120, while a basic facial will run you around $70-$90.

If you’re looking for something more indulgent, such as a full-body scrub or wrap, you can expect to pay anywhere from $120-$150. Of course, these prices can vary greatly depending on the location and quality of the spa, so it’s worth shopping around before you commit to a treatment. And if you’d rather not spend a fortune, why not try making your own in-home spa experience?

Tips For Creating An At-Home Spa Experience

While every now and then it can be nice to splurge on a professional spa treatment, there are plenty of ways you can recreate the same kind of atmosphere in your own bathroom. It’s all about creating an inviting and peaceful environment that is conducive to relaxation. Here are some tips for putting together your own at-home spa experience:

Set The Mood With Relaxing Music

Spa

Transforming your home into a soothing spa haven has never been easier with the help of some calming melodies. The right music can make a world of difference when setting the mood for relaxation and tranquility. In order to really create an at-home spa experience, you’ll want to consider a few things. First, think about the ambiance you want to create. Do you want something more zen and meditative, or would you prefer a dreamy, ethereal mood?

Once you have an idea of the tone you’re trying to achieve, you can then choose your music accordingly. From nature sounds to classical piano to ambient tracks, there’s a whole world of music to explore and experiment with. So go ahead, put on some headphones, and let the music transport you to a state of ultimate bliss.

Utilize Aromatherapy

Spa

Another way to add to the luxurious feel is by incorporating aromatherapy. Essential oils are known for their healing properties, and when mixed with bath salts, they create a decadent and relaxing soak. Lavender is especially popular for soothing stress and anxiety, while eucalyptus can help relieve muscle tension.

Peppermint is another excellent option for those seeking a refreshing burst of energy. Whether you’re looking to unwind after a long day or just want some time to pamper yourself, aromatherapy can be a valuable tool for your at-home spa experience.

Invest In Fluffy Towels, Bathrobes, And Slippers

Spa

To fully indulge in the experience, you’ll want to invest in some fluffy towels, bathrobes, and slippers. These items may seem like small details, but they can make a big difference in how comfortable and luxurious your spa experience feels. The feeling of slipping into a soft, fluffy robe after a hot bath or shower is pure bliss, and wrapping up in a plush towel adds an extra layer of comfort.

And, of course, comfortable slippers are a must for padding around your home spa without slipping or getting cold feet. Investing in these small details can turn your bathroom into a spa-like sanctuary where you can escape the stresses of everyday life.

Create A DIY Face Mask Or Body Scrub

Spa

One of the simplest and most effective ways to elevate your at-home spa game is by whipping up your own face mask or body scrub. With just a few natural ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen, you can create a personalized spa treatment that will leave your skin feeling soft, smooth, and glowing.

Plus, there’s something truly satisfying about putting in the effort to create something with your own two hands — it makes the whole experience feel even more special. So why not give it a try and see the difference it can make for both your skin and your overall well-being?

Get Some Epsom Salt

Spa

Adding Epsom salt to the mix can help take your relaxation to the next level. Epsom salt is known for its healing properties and is perfect for soothing sore muscles and reducing stress. You can easily find Epsom salt at your local drugstore or health food store. Simply add it to your bath water or use it to create a foot soak.

The results are sure to leave you feeling rejuvenated and refreshed, ready to take on whatever challenges come your way. Just be sure to follow the instructions on the package and not exceed the recommended amount.

Dim The Lights And Use Some Candles

Spa

Lighting can play a significant role in setting the right mood for your at-home spa experience. Not only will this help to create an ambiance, but it can also help to reduce stress and promote a sense of calmness. Whether you’re unwinding after a long day or just taking some much-needed “me time,” this small addition to your at-home spa routine can make all the difference.

As you soak in a warm bath or give yourself a pampering facial, allow the soft glow of the candles to transport you to a place of total relaxation. With your own oasis, you’ll find yourself feeling renewed and rejuvenated in no time.

Incorporate Some Plants Or Flowers

Spa

While it may not seem like a major factor in creating an at-home spa experience, incorporating some plants or flowers into the mix can actually make all the difference. Not only do they look beautiful, but they also act as natural air purifiers and can help to promote a feeling of serenity and tranquility.

Whether you place some potted plants around your bathroom or simply put a few fresh flowers in a vase, they can instantly add a touch of life and beauty to the room. Plus, it’s an easy — and affordable — way to give your at-home spa routine that extra special touch.

Creating An At-Home Spa Experience Can Be Simple!

Creating an at-home spa experience doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. With just a few minor additions, you can turn your bathroom into a luxurious sanctuary and enjoy all the benefits of your very own personal oasis. From investing in cozy robes and slippers to crafting your own face mask or body scrub, there are endless possibilities for creating the perfect at-home spa. So why not give it a try? You’re sure to love the results!

How to Have a Spa Day at Home

Customize your space for the ultimate relaxation.

how to have an at home spa day

Every item on this page was chosen by a The Pioneer Woman editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

The great thing about making a spa experience at home is that you can do as much or as little as you want. You can pick one thing off this list for a few-minute escape. Take Ree Drummond, for instance. Her idea of relaxing is sitting in her "whopper of a massage chair" and watching Netflix. But if you want to go all out, you can pile on many of these options for the ultimate day-long affair. Think: smoothie in the morning, manicure in the afternoon, long soaking bath at night. The relaxing combos are endless!

The most important part of a DIY spa day is to pick what makes you feel relaxed, not what a spa order menu thinks you want. Set the mood with your favorite scents, grab a few essential items for the bath, and do whatever you feel your body needs. Then you're ready for your own personal oasis without having to step foot out the front door!

Take a Bath

how to have an at home spa day

One of the simplest joys in life is taking a soak in your tub. Even if you don't have things like fancy bath pillows, you can fill the tub and rest gently against a fluffy towel . Want to heighten the mood? Grab some bubbles and get ready to relax!

Give Yourself a Facial

how to have an at home spa day

Get some much needed R&R and clearer, healthier, glowing skin by creating your own facial! If you're running short on time, just grab your favorite store bought sheet mask and chill for 15 minutes. Or if have the time, go for the whole DIY experience .

Give a Little Love to Your Lips

how to have an at home spa day

Sure you may pop on some chapstick when your lips are dry, but what about giving them a little more care? Follow a great idea from Alex Drummond and buy a lip mask. Wear it overnight or all day like she does for super soft smackers.

Light a Candle

how to have an at home spa day

It seems simple, but lighting a candle really does set the mood. And if you pick the right scent , it's extra relaxing. You can try a wax warmer , too! That way, you don't have to worry about blowing it after your relaxation session.

Go for a Full Body Scrub

how to have an at home spa day

Your face isn't the only thing that should be exfoliated! Your whole body will thank you for the rub down. You probably already have everything in your house to make a DIY sugar scrub , so why not give it a shot?

Give Yourself a Pedicure

how to have an at home spa day

While painting your fingernails is a lovely idea, there's something luxurious about spoiling your feet. Your feet do a lot of work, so they deserve to be pampered. And, doing a pedicure at home is easier than you think!

See What an Eye Mask Can Do

how to have an at home spa day

If you're tired or stressed, your eyes will show it. Masks designed specifically for the skin underneath can work wonders! Reduce dark circles, puffiness, wrinkles, and more. You can even pair eye masks with a face mask at the same time.

Shop Eye Masks

Add Some Shower Botanicals

how to have an at home spa day

Adding plants with healing properties in and around your shower will not only perk up your space, but help what ails you. Think: eucalyptus , lavender, rosemary, and mint. The scents will help relax you and probably clear those pesky sinuses, too!

Transform Your Tresses

how to have an at home spa day

A true spa day should also include your hair, so try a DIY hair mask at home. No matter what kind of hair you have―dull, dry, damaged―there's an option for you. You and your hair will feel like a million bucks!

Give Yourself a Hand Massage

how to have an at home spa day

Chances are that you need to put lotion on your dry skin anyway, so why not give each finger some attention? Before you know it, you're giving yourself a full hand massage and enjoying every second.

Buy a Bath Bomb

how to have an at home spa day

Oh, what fizzy fun! Bombs add a kick to your bath and come in so many colors and scents, making it super easy to personalize your experience. Go for soothing lavender or mix it up with a variety pack to experiment.

Shop Bath Bombs

Make a Smoothie

how to have an at home spa day

Fresh juices and smoothies are staples at spas for a reason. You need to nourish your insides, too! It's so easy to create your own smoothie . You just need to grab a blender , all the healthy stuff in your fridge, and give it a whirl.

Dress the Part

how to have an at home spa day

The first thing a spa will give you is a robe , comfy slippers , maybe a bath towel or two . Set yourself up for spa success by doing the same. It will set the tone for whatever other pampering activities you want to do. Or stay in your pajamas ! Just be as comfortable as possible.

Diffuse the Situation

how to have an at home spa day

Similar to candles, diffusers set the mood with calming scents. Essential oil diffusers come in all shapes, sizes, and smells. They can be used all the time of course, but they sure do set the tone when you're inside all day for pampering.

Invest in a Massage Chair

how to have an at home spa day

Ree Drummond had the right idea to put a massage chair in her living room. That way, she can relax anytime she wants! While you spend a pretty penny on full chairs, you can also snag a massage pad and pop it on your favorite chair for under $100!

How to Create the Ultimate Luxury Spa Day at Home in 10 Easy Steps

Spa day at home! Learn how to create the ultimate luxury spa day at home (for cheap!) using stuff you already have! Pamper yourself by following these 10 steps for an indulgent self-care experience. #SpaDay #SpaDayAtHome #SelfCareIdeas #AtHomeSpa #DIYSpa #FormalNormal

This post may contain affiliate links. Read the full disclaimer here .

A spa day at home is just what the doctor ordered!

Who says you need to head to the spa to feel rejuvenated? There are lots of ways to indulge in an immersive (and inexpensive!) spa experience right at home.

Face masks and pedicures can’t solve all of the world’s problems, but they sure can’t hurt 😉 Set the mood and settle in for a day of self-care and restoration.

Follow these 10 steps for a cheap at-home spa day, and you’ll be on your way to total bliss.

STEP 1: Prep!

Before you get going with your day of rejuvenation, glance through the list ahead and prepare your products and the items you’ll need.

This is a key step that most people skip over during at-home spa days!!!

Glance through the list below and “pre-set” all the items you’ll need. Nothing ruins a relaxing soak in the tub like having to waddle into the bedroom without a towel or robe because you forgot to set one by the tub.

Before you’re in a state of relaxation, mix up your hair masks (recipe below) and set out your facial oil , etc. You’ll be glad you have everything handy and won’t have to walk back and forth between rooms or dig for toe separators with wet fingernails.

TO MAKE:

Homemade sugar scrub.

You can make a super luxurious body scrub with just three simple ingredients: Coconut oil, essential oils and sugar! There are lots of variations on that, though — here are two recipes that are easy to follow:

Brown Vanilla Sugar Scrub

This recipe from Suburban Simplicity smells like warm-baked cookies!

At home spa day ideas - homemade sugar scrub

Lavender Honey Sugar Scrub

This scrub from Sugar, Spice & Glitter uses honey and vitamin E oil.

At home spa day ideas - homemade sugar scrub

DIY Facial Mask:

Running low on your favorite face mask or sheet mask? Fear not. You can whip up a safe-to-use, easy-to-make version with things already in your kitchen.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 tablespoon Greek yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon oatmeal
  • 1 teaspoon honey

No yogurt? No problem. Swap it with a smashed avocado, olive oil, or simply a little bit of warm water. Greek yogurt contains lactic acid, a skin softener, and probiotics, which supposedly help ease inflammation. Honey is a natural astringent, and oatmeal is widely recognized as a good solution for sensitive skin.

Mix it up and set it to the side for now.

When you do put it on, leave it on clean skin for 10 to 15 minutes, and rinse it off with warm water.

STEP 2: Coconut Oil Hair Mask

This one doesn’t even need a recipe.

The reason why this is almost the first step is so that the oil can soak in for an hour or two while you prep other things and take your bath.

Simply take a few tablespoons of coconut oil (varies depending on your hair length) and massage it into your scalp, but concentrate on the bottom half of your hair. Coconut oil has endless benefits for hair, namely that it will help with shine and softness!

NOTE: You’ll likely need to shampoo twice to get it out completely.

easy updo hairstyles for summer

STEP 3: Set the mood

Light candles and/or start your essential oil diffuser.

Part of the spa experience is total relaxation and knowing that there’s nothing else that you have to be doing. At home, you have to create that atmosphere of tranquility — even if you have to fake it a little bit.

So, if you’re the kind of person who won’t be able to relax if you see a pile of dirty dishes or an unfinished load of laundry out of the corner of your eye (hi, me), go ahead and take care of those distractions (or put them behind a closed door) so that you can chill out guilt-free. That’s the first part of setting the tone.

Next, light candles around your “spa” space and crank up your essential oil diffuser with your favorite scent (I love lavender for relaxation vibes!).

Aromatherapy can have very real benefits — so don’t hold back!

STEP 4: Pour a drink

Mint tea is excellent for digestive health, and can help you come out of your spa day feeling truly fresh. Green tea has a number of antioxidants, which goes hand-in-hand with a day of rejuvenation. And of course, hot lemon honey tea is my go-to for all maladies.

Champagne is beneficial for … my mood. 😉

It’s your choice! Pour a glass of whatever makes you feel most relaxed.

11 ways to boost your immune system via Formal Normal

STEP 5: Draw a bath

Now that you have your potions mixed, your robe and towels laid out, a big bowl and dishcloth set out, your nail polish chosen, and your drink in hand, you’re ready to let spa day fully commence!

Pour a heaping two cups of epsom salts into your bath, along with a few drops of lavender essential oil and a splash of coconut oil if you’re feeling particularly naughty. (People say this can really clog up your pipes … so maybe don’t? Do you. And maybe don’t do it every day.)

Dr. Teal’s Epsom Salts is what I use —you can find it easily at Wal-Mart, Target, Amazon, and grocery stores.

Now is where your DIY sugar scrub comes into play! Don’t forget to wash that coconut oil out of your hair, too.

Luxuriate in your hot, salty bath for as long as you’d like. (But if you’ve poured champagne … be careful when you stand back up!)

STEP 6: Facial steam

Once you’ve had enough in the tub, wrap up in your fluffiest robe and fill a big bowl with super hot water (you can use the faucet from your tub and let the bowl fill as you comb your hair out).

When the bowl is full, place it on the counter and lean your head over the hot water (not in it!!) and drape a towel or big dishcloth over your head.

This effectively produces a steam room for your face — a great way to get your pores “opened up” and awesome for clearing sinus issues. You could even put in a drop of mint or tea tree essential oil for an added boost.

STEP 7: Face mask!

Next up during your spa day at home is the face mask you made!

Once the water has cooled off, time to put the bowl away and apply your face mask. You can use whatever one you have in your cabinet, or the DIY one listed above.

STEP 8: Pedicure

As the face mask soaks in, go ahead and get started on your pedicure. Your feet should still be super soft from the bath, so it’s a great time to buff, clip, file and paint!

STEP 9: Face Massage

This is my FAVORITE daily indulgence. Using a few drops of facial oil , pure aloe vera (not the lime green stuff!), or thick facial lotion as a barrier, simply massage your face. This helps prevent wrinkles, release tension and brighten your skin — and it just feels good!

You can massage in tiny circles, by hitting tension points, or by going random — the important thing here is that you are never pulling on dry skin. Keep a thick barrier of slippery oil or lotion in between your hands and your skin (I like using either Cereve Moisturizing Cream or Honest Beauty’s Facial Oil for this — this oil smells like HEAVEN and feels super luxurious without being ridiculously expensive!).

For a step-by-step guide on facial massages, Lisa Eldridge is my most trusted resource.

STEP 10: Manicure

The final step for your spa day at home is the manicure.

Always leave this step for last — the grand finale of your spa day — so that you lessen your chance of chipping or smudging your polish. Go ahead and put on a good rom-com and paint your nails a fun color!

I’m currently loving the Orly Breathable brand of nail polish — it’s “13 Free,” meaning it doesn’t contain 13 known harmful ingredients common to nail polish, and is less likely to poison your bloodstream. Because apparently that’s a thing we need to be worried about now. Anyway!

There you have it — the ultimate guide to creating a spa day at home that will cost a fraction of the cost of a day spa!

spa at home tips

How to recreate a spa day at home

A leading spa manager shares her expert tips to make a home spa as authentic as possible

How? We asked authority Sara Young , who's worked as spa manager for luxury spa brands Chewton Glen , Cunard and The Spa at South Lodge , to share her insider advice. From setting the scene, to creating different spa 'zones' with the best professional-grade gadgets, here Young imparts her ultimate home spa suggestions:

Spa at home: the basics

"I think it's important to create your home spa in a place that is comfortable, relaxing and calm; this is very individual and for one person it could be their bedroom, for another it might be under a tree in the garden (weather permitting!). Comfort and warmth are top priorities for true relaxation, so wherever your chosen space is make sure you have lots of comfy cushions and blankets available to build yourself a 'nest'.

"Scent is a key to spa environment – for a lot of us it can help trigger memories of relaxation. Perhaps you have a bottle of your favourite massage oil or a candle from your last spa visit. I love the Tranquility range from Comfort Zone ; a few dabs of the perfume on my wrist pressure points instantly gets me into the spa mood by reminding me of my last treatment with them. If you want to bring the outdoors-in, invest in the Aromatherapy Associates Forest Therapy collection , which is inspired by the Japanese art of 'forest bathing'.

Forest Therapy Bath & Shower Oil

While many essential-oil blends can feel too heady for humid climes, this bracing pine and cypress scent is perfect all year round.

Tranquillity Blend

Self-Heating Eye Mask

Anchor Balm by De Mamiel

De Mamiel Anchor Balm by De Mamiel

From De Mamiel's Sleep Series, this calming scented balm will ease stress and anxiety, helping you slip into a calmer frame of mind.

"Lighting is also important, and again individual. For me there is nothing more relaxing and rejuvenating than sunshine on my skin, but for others total darkness aids a sense of calm. My favourite eye masks for blocking the outside world are Spacemasks . They self-heat which feels fabulous, plus the jasmine scent really helps you relax."

"Music, too, is important. All the therapists I work with use Spotify to access themed music such as 'music to massage' or 'music for meditation', but you might want to look for nature melodies, too. Try apps such as Nature Sound and Calm to create your own 'soundscape', be it a forest ambience, peaceful stream or evening crickets.

"For switching off in general, there are lots of great apps out there. If you're looking to incorporate a doze then Pzizz has a nap feature where you can set different lengths without relying on alarms. For meditation and calm then I'm all for Headspace , and for something more spiritual then I highly recommend listening to Deepka Chopra 's fantastic live meditations."

Consider creating different spa ‘zones’

"While you may not have a pool, you can still have different spa 'zones' within your house (and garden)."

"A fun way to start is with a mud room experience in the bathroom. For this type of experience at The Spa at South Lodge we use the Gold Sugar Scrub , Ultramoor Mud Mask and Body Cream from the Hungarian range Omorovicza . To begin, if you've got a steam function on your shower then turn this on (or alternatively pop your shower on a high heat to fill your bathroom to make a mini steam room), then scrub your body to remove all the dead skin cells (which is perfect for resurfacing dry winter skin) and then let the steam open your pores ready for the mud, before showering the scrub off. Apply the mud and let it work to detox the skin, taking time for the mud to start drying which is when it will draw out impurities. Finally, wash the mud off before applying the body cream for hydrated and super-soft skin. Of course, this can be done alone or with your partner."

A seriously luxe option, this rich body scrub contains anti-inflammatory gold alongside fragrant floral oils and antioxidant-rich extracts.

Bum Bum Body Scrub

Inspired by the body-positive culture of Brazil, this conditioning scrub balanced exfoliation with hydration (and smells delicious, too).

Relaxing Salt Scrub

This spa favourite uses salt to slough away rough skin and sweet almond oil to impart deep moisture.

Bedtime Hero Magnesium Body Butter

NEOM Bedtime Hero Magnesium Body Butter

Infused with a chamomile-rich scent as well as sleep-regulating magnesium, this thick-as-butter body cream is perfect for a pre-bed pamper.

"Make the bedroom your treatment room for pampering like massages and facials. Light some candles – Neom have some great ones, I'm currently enjoying Scent to Make You Happy – which can enhance the ambience alongside your preferred music and lighting. For massage oils look to ESPA , a classic British brand with a fantastic range of massage and bath oils so that you can theme your spa day. Personally, I enjoy doing all this with my other half as we can apply each other's products. Plus, people report that partners are more likely to want to come along on a 'real' spa day after they've enjoyed a home spa together.

"Finally, for a relaxation zone I like to cocoon myself away in the lounge, or a warm spot in the house. This is when I use a home foot spa, put on some guided meditation and finish in relaxation. A glass of something or two can go down a treat then, too."

Susanne Kaufmann is a true authority on natural spa products, and this Detox Oil, with active ingredients extracted from medicinal herbs, is one of her most-loved formulas.

The best at-home spa treatments and therapies

"At the easiest end of the scale, if you have a bath and are looking for something different to bubbles or epsom salts, then I can highly recommend trying out a seaweed bath using Irish brand Voya's Lazy Days seaweed bag . Seaweed is known to have many benefits including detoxifying and re-mineralising the body, soothing aches, improving circulation, and healing skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis – and the great thing is that you can compost the seaweed afterwards."

Lazy Days | Detoxifying Seaweed Bath

"A lot of spas have recently opened up hair salons, as we often forget that our hair needs some TLC as much as our skin, so a regular hair treatment session can be really helpful. I start with the SOLU from Davines which is a salt scrub cleanser designed to clear congested hair follicles, helping to encourage new hair growth. (I'm also very big on sustainability when selecting products and Davines is a leading hair care brand on this front.) I then follow with a scalp mask from the brand's The Circle Chronicles, choosing the one best suited to my hair's current needs. This is the time to give yourself a good scalp massage (or ask someone else to); there is nothing more relaxing or centring to me than a scalp massage including some facial pressure points, and it also helps to stimulate hair growth. Finally I wrap my hair up in a towel so it's warm while the mask works its magic."

Solu Sea Salt Scrub Cleanser

This salt-based exfoliating paste is the perfect start to a serious hair overhaul, delivering a satisfying amount of grit without feeling scratchy.

Davines The Let It Go Circle Hair Mask

Davines The Let It Go Circle Hair Mask

Infused with Ayurvedic brahmi oil and oil-absorbing clay, this dense and creamy mask works well on both the scalp and hair. With several uses per sachet, it's excellent value, too.

Professional Foot File

Margaret Dabbs London Professional Foot File

Spa-standard foot files can be hard to find, but Margaret Dabbs always delivers.

ZenSpa Revive Microdermabrasion Foot Scrub

Jessica Nails ZenSpa Revive Microdermabrasion Foot Scrub

An expert pick, this pumice-based foot scrub will set to work on the most neglected of heels.

"At-home pedicures are also fun and surprisingly relaxing, and now is the perfect time as we often neglect our feet in winter. Start by removing old polish, then trimming and filing the nails, taking care to clean under the nails. My top tip is to then start the pedicure experience by filing the feet whilst dry (not wet) with a good quality foot file, such as the Margaret Dabbs Professional Foot File ; filing is not only great for your feet but is also a great workout for your arms. Follow this with a good warm water foot soak of the feet with a luxury scrub such as Zenspa Microdermabrasion Foot Scrub to help exfoliate your feet further for a silky-soft finish. If you've got a home foot spa then now's the time to sit back and relax. Once your feet have soaked it's time to push back the cuticles and use nippers where appropriate – always taking care to 'nip' rather than 'tug' at your cuticles. Investing time in cuticle care (whether it's your fingers or toes) is important, and always gives you a better starting point for the application of the polish – the final step. My go-to brand for colours is Jessica Nails , with the Phenom range an excellent option for those wanting an alternative to gel nails and need a polish that is long-lasting.

"When it comes to facials, I like to stick to using one brand of products, that are designed to work synergistically in sequence. Omorovicza has a great 'wellness collection' that has everything you need for an at-home facial. Or use the opportunity to follow a tutorial from a professional who can guide you step-by-step to ensure therapeutic results at home." The home spa gadgets worth investing in

"A lot of professional facials use lifting and toning techniques to help with anti-ageing, and a good investment for home use is the NuFace Trinity . It has scientific results to back up claims that it lifts, tones and smooths the skin. Plus, you can really feel it working."

Mini Facial Toning Device

Working to lift and tone the skin, a  microcurrent  device is the ultimate spa-night investment. Use this one regularly for firming results that rival a course of professional facials.

Foot Spa with Heater

Beurer Foot Spa with Heater

The ultimate indulgence for overworked feet, this foot spa contains massage and bubble settings, as well as magnetic and infrared therapies for boosting circulation.

Boost Advanced LED Light Therapy Face Mask

The Light Salon Boost Advanced LED Light Therapy Face Mask

The A-list's favourite facial gadget, this LED face mask contains red and near-infrared light diodes to boost collagen production and unify skin tone.

"I'm also a fan of combining treatments to be 'spa-efficient', and I quite often listen to some meditation while wearing an LED mask – my go-to being the Deessee Pro . I find that the blue light therapy has really helped to clear up my skin thanks to its antibacterial qualities, while the red light boosts collagen production. A lot of spas have added LED therapy to their treatment lists, as we can all see such great benefit from these treatments.

"Another way to do this is by using the Neom Wellbeing Pod while pampering. The essential oil diffuser works electronically to scent your room and humidify the air, using 100 per cent natural oils in the brand's signature scents."

"When it comes to pedicures, the best way to make yours spa-worthy, as opposed to a standard file-and-paint, is to invest in a foot spa that incorporates massage. The Beurer FB50 is the ultimate in foot massager. Combine this with high-end pedicure products such as the Fabulous Feet Discovery Kit and Professional Foot File from the foot queen herself, Margaret Dabbs, and you will elevate the experience – and the results – no end."

14 Ideas for an at Home Spa Experience

Carlie Redd

There are so many ways to create a luxury experience at home. Here are a few home spa ideas to consider trying.

A luxury spa experience at home can be created by setting up a special room or area in your home that is dedicated to relaxation. This space can be decorated with relaxing colors and soft lighting to set the mood. It should also be stocked with all the supplies you need for a relaxing spa experience, such as scented candles, soft towels, and soothing music.

You can also create a luxury spa experience at home by using high-quality products that will pamper your skin and hair. Look for products that contain natural ingredients and that are designed to provide a luxurious experience. You can also get inspired by the simple approach of an out of the box of the best at home spa kit .

Finally, set the mood for your luxury spa experience by creating an environment that is both comfortable and relaxing. This may include dimming the lights, burning scented candles, and playing soft music. By taking the time to create a relaxing atmosphere, you can ensure that your spa experience is truly luxurious.

Here are specific ideas (in no particular order) you can try. If you would like a more step by step checklist then see our guide on diy spa steps .

  • Use a new organic soap to get clean
  • Convert your tub into a cold therapy bath
  • Start with a cold water or tea to unwind
  • Try a gadgets for a soothing massage
  • Start off with a soothing foot soak
  • Use a heat wrap for easing sore muscles
  • Spray your bed with Lavender oil to encourage relaxation

  • Drop in a bath bomb
  • Use aromatherapy to set a relaxing mood
  • Block the outside noise and the bad vibes with background music
  • Face massage with a jade roller
  • Dim the lights and set a candle or two

First, you want to make sure that the music is relaxing and calming. This means avoiding anything with a fast tempo or that is too upbeat.

You also want to make sure that the music is appropriate for the luxury spa setting. This means avoiding anything that is too loud or that has explicit lyrics.

Finally, you want to make sure that the music is appropriate and that it wont distract or draw too much attention.

2. Use a new organic soap to get clean

There are a few things to consider when choosing a new soap, lotion or essential oil for a spa-like experience at home.

First, think about what kind of experience you are looking for. Are you looking to relax, rejuvenate or both?

Second, consider your skin type and any sensitivities you may have. For example, if you have sensitive skin, you may want to avoid using essential oils or products with strong fragrances.

Third, research the different options available and read reviews to see what others have thought of them.

Once you have considered all of these factors, you should be able to narrow down your choices and find the perfect product for your needs.

3. Convert your tub into a cold therapy bath

If you are experiencing pain or inflammation in your body, cold therapy can be a great way to find relief. When you immerse yourself in cold water, your blood vessels constrict and this can help to reduce swelling and inflammation. Cold therapy can also help to numb pain and can be a great way to find relief from conditions like arthritis, bursitis, and tendonitis.

4. Start with a cold water or tea to unwind

There are many natural cold drinks that can help to relax the body and mind. Some of these drinks include: herbal tea, chamomile tea, lavender tea, passionflower tea, lemon balm tea, and valerian tea. These teas can be enjoyed hot or cold, and can be sipped throughout the day to help promote relaxation. Other natural cold drinks that can help to relax include: milk, yogurt, smoothies, and juices. These drinks can be enjoyed as a snack or a meal, and can help to provide the body with the nutrients it needs to relax and feel good.

5. Try a gadgets for a soothing massage

Home massage products are a great way to relax and rejuvenate after a long day. There are many different types of products available on the market, from simple back massagers to more elaborate massage chairs. No matter what your budget or needs, there is a home massage product that can help you feel your best.

6. Start off with a soothing foot soak

There are many benefits to having a soothing foot soak. The warmth of the water can help to relax muscles and reduce pain and inflammation. The soaking can also help to improve circulation and reduce stress. Additionally, it can help to soften the skin and nails and reduce foot odor.

7. Use a heat wrap for easing sore muscles

Heat wraps are a popular choice for treating sore muscles because they are easy to use and provide consistent, deep heat relief. Heat wraps can be used for both acute and chronic pain relief. For acute pain relief, heat wraps are typically used for 20-30 minutes at a time. For chronic pain relief, heat wraps are typically used for 30-60 minutes at a time.

8. Spray your bed with Lavender oil to encourage relaxation

There are several reasons to spray your bed with lavender oil. Lavender oil is known for its relaxing and soothing properties, making it a great way to promote a good night's sleep. In addition, lavender oil can help to repel dust mites and other pests, keeping your bed clean and fresh. Finally, lavender oil has a pleasant, relaxing scent that can help to create a calm and tranquil atmosphere in your bedroom.

9. Dry brush scrub head to toe

A dry brush scrub is a type of exfoliation that uses a brush with bristles to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. This type of scrub is beneficial for the skin because it helps to improve circulation, promote cell turnover, and prevent the build-up of dirt and oil on the skin. Dry brush scrubs can be done at home using a variety of different brushes, and they are typically followed by a moisturizing step to help soothe the skin.

10. Drop in a bath bomb

Bath bombs are a fun and relaxing way to take a bath. They can help you to unwind after a long day and relieve muscle tension. They can also be used to soothe dry skin.

11. Use aromatherapy to set a relaxing mood

Aromatherapy can be used to set a relaxing mood at home for a number of reasons. The most obvious reason is that certain essential oils can have a calming effect on the mind and body, helping to reduce stress and promote relaxation. In addition, the act of diffusing essential oils into the air can be a relaxing and therapeutic ritual in itself, providing a moment of peace and calm in a busy day. The scent of essential oils can also help to create a warm and inviting atmosphere in your home, making it a more pleasant place to relax and unwind.

12. Block the outside noise and the bad vibes with background music

There are many ways to use background noises or nature sounds to create the perfect spa ambiance. One way is to use a sound machine that emits calming sounds such as rain, thunder, waves, or birds. Another way is to play soothing music that has a slow tempo and no lyrics. You can also create your own spa ambiance by recording sounds from nature, such as running water or rain, and playing them in the background.

13. Face massage with a jade roller

There are many benefits to giving yourself a face massage with a jade roller at home. Jade rollers have been used for centuries in China for their beauty and health benefits. They are known to improve circulation, reduce puffiness and wrinkles, and improve the overall appearance of the skin.

Jade rollers are also very relaxing and can help to reduce stress and tension headaches. If you are looking for a natural way to improve your skin health and appearance, then a jade roller is a great option.

14. Dim the lights and set a candle or two

There are many reasons why candles are used at day spas. First, candles provide a relaxing and soothing ambiance. The soft light and gentle scent of candles can help guests feel more relaxed and pampered. Candles can also help set the mood for different types of treatments. For example, if a guest is receiving a massage, the candles can help create a more calming and intimate setting. Lastly, candles can help to mask any unpleasant smells in the spa.

The Best Products for a DIY Spa Day at Home (We Can Vouch for Each One)

home visit spa

Byrdie / Alli Waataja

In This Article

From stress-relieving massages to uplifting facials , spa treatments are the ultimate in self-care. But as much as we’d all like to have spa days on regular rotation, we know that it’s hard to pencil them into a busy schedule. Still, that’s no excuse to avoid pampering yourself, especially when you can do it all with relative ease from the comfort of your home, a DIY spa day if you will. Whether you’re working remotely (and up for multi-tasking) or just don’t feel like getting off the couch (no judgment), turn to these at-home products that essentially bring the spa to you.

Below, discover the beauty products our editors turn to for DIY spa days at home.

What to Look For in a Spa Product

A luxe experience.

When you really want to unwind and pamper yourself, the last thing you want to do is fuss over instructions or go through a complicated process. So whatever product you choose, make sure its use creates a relaxing experience. From lighting a decadent candle to using a rich body oil, spa-like products are about delivering results and a sense of overall calm.

Don't underestimate the power of scent for elevating your mood and relaxing the senses. Spa-like scents include invigorating herbal ones like eucalyptus but can be any scent that you find intoxicating. If applicable, pick a product with a scent that relaxes you to help enhance your DIY spa experience.

Consider the Time You Want to Spend

Some products are designed to help you slow down and savor the experience, but you might have only a few extra seconds in the morning to spare on pampering. If you're looking to add a quick spa session to your regular routine, you might want to try something like a facial massager that doesn't take long to use. Or if you have more time for a long nightly soak, you might want a bath oil. The products on this list range from a face steamer that can work in under ten minutes to a face mask that can be left on up to an hour.

What We Like

  • Squeeze bottle
  • Quick results
  • Great to use under eyes

What We Don't Like

Byrdie senior editor Hallie Gould is a big fan of Biologique Recherche, including this creamy, luscious face mask she says is worth every penny and then some, which is praise she doesn't shell out that often. "In fact, I save my pennies in a jar and bring them to the bank when I want to cash out," she says.

About the product itself: "So, here's the deal: Biologique Recherche's Masque VIP 02 is oxygenating and moisturizing treatment (you can add antipollution to the list too) to help stressed or 'asphyxiated' skin," Hallie says. "That means if you live in a polluted city (check), smoke (we won't tell), or notice a general sallow or dull look to your skin. It works to stimulate skin regeneration, soften, soothe (it's great for a sunburn), and brighten all the while feeling like a cool, comfy blanket of skincare goodness."

While the directions instruct leaving it on for 20-30 minutes, Hallie likes to apply it generously (especially around her eyes and lips) and leave it on for an hour. "It feels more luxurious that way," she says.

Benefits: Boosts radiance, smooths, hydrates | Active Ingredients: Natural essential fatty acids, marine elastin, marine collagen, Biologique Recherche's exclusive oxygenating complex, corn extract, vitamin C | Skin Type: All | Size: 3.4 fl. oz. | Cruelty-Free: No

Kate McLeod The Mama Stone

Kate McLeod

  • Pregnant- and nursing-safe

Byrdie VP/General Manager Leah Wyar loves to use this moisturizing body bar by Kate McLeod—and she's hardly the only one. "Slathering my post-shower skin with body oil is the closest thing to a professional treatment that I can typically get these days," she says. "I've next leveled my go-to with this solid bar, which melts into an oil on contact. I can't tell you how relaxing it feels to run this over tense areas like shoulders and shins. And I love how natural it is: I had the privilege of watching the owner, Kate, create a batch of these in her Brooklyn test kitchen...it's the real deal!"

Active Ingredients: Cocoa butter, sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil, avocado oil, fractionated coconut oil | Skin Type: All | Size: 3.5 oz. | SPF: None | Cruelty-Free: Yes

HoliFrog Como Popp-E Renewal Scrubby Wash

  • Warming sensation
  • Doesn't strip skin
  • Gentle formulation
  • Some may prefer something grittier

Most of the time it's the formulas that we find most relaxing, but sometimes the product packaging can deliver a sense of calm as well—like this one, which ticks off both boxes for Leah.

"Love the cute little frog (which I find weirdly relaxing to look at)," she says. "Love the bright orange gel texture (a face oil, cleansing gel and scrub in one) even more. Love the slight warming sensation (that happens when you rub it all over your face) the most. The entire process makes face washing enjoyable—and leaves my skin super soft and glowy. Less than half the cost of a facial with similar results."

Active Ingredients: Poppy seeds, bamboo stem powder, black currant seed oil, vitamin C, poppy seed oil, astaxanthin | Skin Type: Acne-prone, combination, dry, mature, balanced, oily, sensitive | Benefits: Exfoliates, plumps, cleanses, restores the skin barrier, boosts radiance | Size: 3.4 fl. oz. | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Pro Facial Steamer

  • Improves product penetration
  • Recyclable packaging
  • Softens skin
  • Doesn't have a product warranty

If you love facial steaming in your professional facials, you'll find similar joy from this at-home steamer—one that Byrdie associate editor Holly Rhue steals from her roommate all the time.

"It's the only thing that makes our outdated Brooklyn bathroom feel like a luxe spa in the middle of Palm Springs," she says. "It's a myth that steam can actually open up your pores, but steaming your face  does  loosen pore-clogging debris and offers protective hydration before doing a chemical peel or physical scrub. Use it as your first step in your facial routine to prime skin for treatments—it's a game-changer."

Diptyque Eucalyptus Candle

Courtesy of Nordstrom

  • Jar can be used
  • Relaxing scent
  • Fills a room quickly

Scents and candles are a great way to set the mood for an at-home spa day. "To me, eucalyptus is the most soothing, relaxing scent," Holly says. "Lighting this candle signals my brain to unwind, loosen up, and release tension—I can't live without it. When I'm feeling particularly indulgent, I light it in my bathroom an hour before I plan to start my at-home spa day. It makes everything smell like a rainforest and sets the tone for the rest of my day."

Scent: Eucalyptus | Number of Wicks: 1 | Burning Time: 60 hours | Cruelty-Free: No

Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Hydra-Gel Eye Patches

  • Cooling sensation
  • Fragrance-free
  • Stays in place

Feeling fatigued? Use these cooling under-eye gels to perk you (and your eye contour) right up. "No spa day is complete without a set of cooling under-eye gels, and these are my absolute favorites," Holly says. "They're drenched in hyaluronic acid to plump fine lines, arnica to lighten the appearance of dark circles , and are naturally cool to the touch to help de-puff. I recommend enjoying them with your favorite cocktail and some good old fashioned reality television."

Benefits: Hydrates, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, fades discoloration | Active Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, marshmallow root extract, caffeine | Skin Type: Balanced, dry, combination, oily | Size: 30 pairs | Cruelty-Free: No

Aura Cacia Eucalyptus Shower Tablets

  • Provides aromatherapy benefits
  • Sometimes dissolve too quickly

Showers and baths are quintessential spa day activities. To make that time more enjoyable, Byrdie senior editor Lindsey Metrus turns to these scented tablets.

"I was introduced to these evaporating shower tablets many moons ago by a friend who says she places them on her shower floor when she's congested to help open up her sinuses," she says. "Being that I'm borderline obsessed with the smell of eucalyptus (when I die, please bury me in a bed of eucalyptus leaves), I was so excited to create my own spa-like experience at home, especially on a day when I'm sick and can't breathe through my nose. So one day when I was feeling particularly under the weather, I popped one on the shower floor, cranked the handle as hot as I could stand it (I know it's not great for your skin, but a hot shower is heaven to me), and inhaled the delicious herbal scent. I can honestly say I felt better and more relaxed afterward. The only problem is they make you want to stay in the shower longer."

Scent: Eucalyptus | Size: 3 1 oz. tablets | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Aceology Ice Globe Facial Massagers

  • Reduces redness
  • Improves product absorption

It doesn't take much effort to give your face a massage, especially when you have a handy tool like this within arm's reach. "While you may initially feel a bit silly running these maraca-shaped tools along your face, their innate "cool" feel and ability to massage the facial tissue while decreasing puffiness is well worth the odd looks you might get from your roommates," says Lindsey. "I pop them in the fridge for a few minutes to get them even chillier, then run them along my eyes, temples, and forehead in opposite circles. Not only do I feel like my face is less puffy afterward, but I feel more relaxed and calm—it's a great way to settle myself before taking on the day."

Manual or Electric: Manual | Features: Made of premium quality glass, cools in 10 minutes

Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Rescue Mask

  • Short application period
  • Unhygienic container

If you don't have much time to pamper yourself, reach for this face mask that works in just five minutes. "My favorite thing about this mask—besides its heavenly smell—is that it only takes five minutes to work, so it's ideal for when I don't have time to go all-in on a spa day," says Byrdie email editor Karli Bendlin . "It's made with kombu seaweed flakes, red algae particles, and lotus seeds that are left intact in the blend, so when I smooth a layer on, it feels like I'm applying a freshly blended smoothie—one that leaves my skin looking so bright and even, I can skip concealer."

Benefits: Exfoliates, smooths, boosts radiance | Active Ingredients: Vitamin E, kombu seaweed flakes, sea fennel extract, Super 7 Complex | Skin Type: Balanced, dry, combination, oily | Size: 1 fl. oz. or 3.3 fl. oz. | Cruelty-Free: No

Fur Bath Drops

  • Gynecologically-tested
  • Takes a while to dissolve

If you're not popping in one or more of these bath oils while you soak, you're really missing out, according to our editors. "There was a time where I capped off every day with a hot bath, but as my schedule got busier, it was the first indulgence to go," Karli says. "I have these softening bath drops to thank for reintroducing me to my favorite self-care activity. After a few Byrdie editors declared their love for these nourishing beads, I was convinced to give them a try—and am so glad I did. Scattering a few of these seaweed-encased oil drops into a tub of hot water is a luxury I now make sure I leave time for a couple of times a week."

Size: 18 count | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Consider what relaxes you and what types of treatments you prefer. A good place to start could be a candle, a bath oil, a face mask, and a hydrating body butter for when you get out of the tub. Any activity or beauty treatment that relaxes you and feels luxurious can be a DIY spa at home.

If you're in a pinch, you can use ingredients you probably have in your kitchen. Ingredients like honey, sugar, avocado, and olive oil are nourishing and can be blended into a body scrub or face or hair mask, for a couple examples.

Many of the items on this list would make great gifts, including the Diptyque Eucalyptus Candle, Kate McLeod The Mama Stone, or the Fur Bath Drops. A nice candle always makes a simple yet appreciated gift.

The 11 Amazon Products One Spa Owner Uses To Replicate Pricey Treatments At Home

home visit spa

After telling the Strategist about the EtekCity massager making the rounds among a certain set in L.A., I received many enthusiastic thank-you notes from folks who went out and bought the inexpensive device. But to each, I would reply, “don’t thank me, thank Anna Zahn” — the lymphatic massage specialist and founder of the spa Ricari Studios , who first recommended it to her clients (one of whom recommended it to me). Turns out, the EtekCity is just one of many “funky Amazon recommendations” Zahn has for inexpensive gadgets you can use at home to replicate the results of pricey esthetician-grade or brand-name devices — all of which she’s tested herself, and bought only after “ checking reviews and researching if it’s from an established brand.”

Before getting into her list of dupe devices, Zahn — who is soon opening a New York City location of her spa — notes none are miracle products that provide overnight benefits. And when using any at home, you (of course) will not get the expertise that comes from professionals’ years of training. But, when used at home regularly, she says many of the gadgets help stimulate blood flow, promote lymphatic drainage, and work the body in the same way Ricari’s treatments are designed to do, which over time can result in better-looking skin and other health benefits. “You can’t go to the gym once and expect to be cut, you can’t water a plant once and expect it to grow. But any type of [regular] circulation, stimulation of the skin tissue, will absolutely improve the quality of your skin.” For best results, Zahn stresses to regularly sanitize all of these products (for that, she likes these wipes ), and like with anything she recommends to non-clients, she encourages “cross-referencing home use [of the devices] with your dermatologist.”

For an at-home high-frequency electrical-current treatment

NuDerma High Frequency Skin Therapy Wand Machine

Likely familiar territory to anyone who’s had a facial (or specifically seen a derm for acne treatments), the technology behind high-frequency electrical current devices was originally developed by Nicola Tesla to address skin infections. Typically, the devices used feature a glass bulb at the end of a wand that contains an oscillating low-level electrical current. When the wand touches the skin, enriched oxygen kills bacteria, and the current makes blood vessels contract, which can reduce inflammation, help the body heal wounds (like acne scars), and increase circulation. Starting in the ’70s, these devices have been sold directly to spas from manufacturers like Paragon, Equipro, and Jellen, sometimes as part of more elaborate, medical-grade machines. But today, Zahn says that this specific high-frequency technology is readily available on Amazon, for the “go-to purpose of zapping bacteria and preventing breakouts as part of your cleansing routine at home.”

Zahn says “there’s not a difference in effectiveness” between at-home models and most high-frequency devices used by professionals. She says that her favorite NuDerma device — which costs $20 less than a $60 Pro Skin facial treatment at New York City’s Dermalogica spa that incorporates a similar device — has 10 watts of power, making it “is safe and gentle for home use every day.” To use, simply plug it in and pass the bulb over your just-washed face for five minutes, or however long it takes to cover the area. Zahn’s go-to Amazon device comes with multiple attachments — the ones she uses most are the mushroom tube, which is wider and thus covers more of the skin’s surface area, and the ball probe, which she says is good for blemishes. She also suggests “using gauze [as a layer between the wand and the skin] because of the increased sanitation, and because it seems to help the device move more easily over the skin.”

For an at-home radio-frequency facial

MLay Radio Frequency Face-Lifting Device

Radio frequency facials using medical-grade equipment are the exclusive domain of plastic surgeons and medspas, and a standard two-hour treatment will on average start around $2,000. Venus Viva and Thermage are the two prominent devices professionals use for these treatments; they create pinlike punctures in skin to deliver radio waves that convert to heat at deeper layers, promising benefits that include firming and lifting the face, softening fine lines, and stimulating collagen production. Zahn says “the immediate tightening results” of radio-frequency facials “are truly amazing,” but notes that “even Thermage is not a one stop shop: You need to continue to upkeep with cellular stimulation or repeat Thermage every six months to a year.”

For her at-home upkeep, Zahn uses the not inexpensive (but far less than $2000) MLay device. It operates at a much lower frequency than a Thermage, which Zahn admits won’t deliver the same immediate tightening. “Using the MLay one time won’t give you a complete lift in the jawline,” she says, “but with regular use over time it can really help stimulate the areas that tend to sag, and make the skin supple and tight.” The lower frequency, though, again makes it safer for home use, she explains. For best results, she recommends using it on your face for 10 minutes every other day over a couple of weeks, of course noting and adjusting to any irritation or issues. “Once you feel like you’re starting to notice the effects: firmer skin, improved color and circulation, then you can drop down to once a week or as needed,” she adds.

For an at-home cupping treatment

Lure Essentials Cupping Therapy Set

Zahn says that cupping, an ancient therapy in Eastern medicine, is the treatment she does most consistently at home, basing her technique on the cupping program she developed with L.A.–based acupuncturist Dr. Ryan Monahan for Ricari. Monahan told me the benefits of cupping include “improving the circulation of fresh, oxygenated blood in the body, and clearing toxins and cellular debris through the lymphatic system while improving skin tissues’ nutrient supply.” Full-body treatments can cost $75 on average, and because the tools used by professionals are relatively similar to those you’d use at home, Zahn says the biggest sacrifice you make with at-home cupping treatments is expertise, and that professionals like Monahan will often have assistants to help them. But Zahn says that, with the help of some video tutorials and a friend with an extra set of hands, you can learn enough to replicate the benefits at home.

Cupping can either require manually moving a cup around to massage the whole body, or placing a cup in a single spot to heal specific muscle injuries. Different tools are used based on the treatment, but for moving cupping, specialists like Monahan typically use glass cups. A fire is lit inside each cup, then extinguished before a cup is placed on the body, and as the air inside the cup cools, it creates a suction force that stimulates blood vessels in the skin . Zahn’s preferred at-home set is not glass, but silicone, making them even simpler to use. “They’re really benevolent and easy to handle,” she says. Instead of using fire to create the suction force, with these, you simply press down on each cup to create the vacuum effect on skin. Zahn suggests first “applying a body oil , because if you try to use the cups on bare skin you won’t be able to move them properly.” Then, after applying a cup, “massage out the tissue in all directions, finishing by moving the cup upwards towards the heart to encourage lymphatic drainage and circulation.” To get the hang of it, she suggests watching this video tutorial (fast-forward to the six-minute mark to get straight to the technique). And Monahan notes that you should be careful not to cup skin “that is damaged, wounded, or with moles or any other growths or abnormalities.”

For an at-home cellulite-reduction treatment

Ameiseye Handheld Electric Body Massager

Pretty much all anti-cellulite machines that med spas use for targeted cellulite reduction treatments incorporate deep massage, according to Zahn, who notes there are often other technologies at play — like vacuum, suction, or heating and cooling elements. Massage underpins cellulite-reduction treatments, though, because it helps with lymphatic drainage and circulation, which inturn reduces fluid retention and minimizes the appearance of cellulite.

To replicate the benefits of these treatments at home, Zahn says you could use a $600 TheraGun (a device she says she loves) — or this far less expensive Ameiseye massager. It only has three strengths, she says, so “it’s a bit on the lighter side in terms of stimulation,” and does not have the force or precision of a TheraGun or spa-grade devices used in cellulite-reduction treatments. Zahn adds that this means you’d need to use it at least every other day (though there’s no harm in using it daily) before you start to notice any reduction in the appearance of cellulite — which, she notes, is not something you can ever “get rid of” because “cellulite is genetically and hormonally driven, and can change over time.” The Ameiseye massager is gentle enough that it can also be used “on your face around your sinuses” to drain lymph pockets that build up there, according to Zahn. For best results, she suggests using the device directly on skin you want to target “after applying a face or body oil” (she likes Sunday Riley CEO Glow ). [ Editor’s note: The massager is currently only available via third-party sellers that charge extra shipping costs. ]

For an at-home microneedling treatment

Sdara Skincare Derma Roller Cosmetic Needling Instrument

Using tiny needles to puncture and resurface the skin is an ancient practice. Most estheticians that offer this treatment use a machine with optional needle lengths (.5-, 1-, 1.5-millimeter) combined with manual rolling. Like cupping, having it professionally done comes with added expertise of use — you can trust your esthetician’s tools to be of the utmost cleanliness, Zahn says, and a pro’s trained hands are less likely to wound skin. But manual rollers are still a very popular at-home tool (Rio has written about how she uses one to combat hyperpigmentation). Before taking one to your face, though, Zahn recommends “checking in with an esthetician; if anything, bring yours in and have them do a little tutorial with you. Especially if you’re acne prone, it can potentially worsen.”

Her preferred at-home roller ( which has appeared in a Strategist gift guide before ) is even less expensive than Rio’s — its needles are .25 mm, a size Zahn says makes it great for using as an exfoliant/skin prepper before applying other products. (Rio’s roller’s .5 mm needles, and larger ones, are better for treating serious skin wounds like scars and marks, according to Zahn.) She says you get the best results by using it on a freshly washed face and applying an active serum after rolling, recommending this vitamin C serum — which, incidentally, has also appeared in Rio’s skin-care Google doc . To ensure it’s of the utmost cleanliness, Zahn also says to soak the roller in alcohol or antiseptic before and after use.

For an at-home microdermabrasion treatment

Ricank Facial Skin Scrubber

“These are everywhere in Korea and Japan, where there is a culture of tackling air pollution for skin health,” Zahn told me, adding “they seem to be making their way over here.” She admits that she’s only received one treatment where a skin “spatula” like this was used, noting that the esthetician used it instead of traditional microdermabrasion tools or acids that can be too harsh on some skin types. But because they’re the opposite of harsh, you should not expect a spatula like this to immediately deliver results on par with those of a dermatologist-administered peel or microdermabrasion.

Zahn uses her Ricank spatula to exfoliate, loosen dirt and grime in pores, and help any active serums or other products penetrate deeper into skin (and says its as gentle as an electric toothbrush or proper facial-cleansing brushes like a Clarisonic). “When your pores feel congested, when you’ve been wearing a lot of layers of makeup, or when you’ve spent a lot of time in polluted air,” are all times she suggests reaching for it. Zahn adds that, due to its shape, the device also makes a great blackhead extractor, and that the light, manual scraping movement you make while using it makes the spatula really effective at removing facial cleanser. [ Editor’s note: Though the product photo shows two scrubbers, the price shown is for one, according to Amazon. ]

For a Biomat

MediCrystal Far Infrared Mat

A lot of spas (like Skin Worship and Ricari in L.A. and EVO in Mill Valley) offer the perk of a warming infrared mat for clients to lie on during treatment, while other spas (like New York City’s La Casa ) offer specific infrared-mat treatments for healing or relaxation. These mats — the gold standard of which is the $1,500 Biomat beloved by folks like Moon Juice founder Amanda Chantal Bacon — plug into the wall to produce infrared rays that recreate the properties of natural sunlight on skin, without the harmful UV radiation. Zahn explains that a mat with these properties “can help boost production of healthy cell tissue, increase circulation, relieve muscle soreness and calm the nervous system.” In addition to modern spas, infrared mats are “used on pro athletes, in hospitals, and are a godsend if you’re sick or have any injury. My mom, who’s had multiple surgeries, sleeps on hers every night.”

Her Amazon picks aren’t cheap, but the most expensive one is almost a third of the price of the Biomat, and both deliver the same Infrared benefits, according to Zahn. She explains the difference in price between her at-home models and a Biomat is in part due to name recognition, but also the types of healing crystals utilized in each mat. Of her two favorites, the MediCrystal has Amethyst and Tourmaline stones packed into tubes that line the interior of the mat — which Zahn notes that people “sometimes find a bit uncomfortable,” and will pad the mat with fleece. Zahn says the even lower-priced HealthyLine mat, which is beloved by many of her staffers, is a great entry level infrared mat that has jade discs woven into its fabric (instead of packed into tubes like those on the MediCrystal mat). She says both mats are “permanent fixtures in my living room,” and that she’ll lay on one every day for at least 15 minutes.

For a Déesse LED mask

CSBY 7-colors Photon LED Facial Mask

LED light therapy for skin is ubiquitous in high-end spa treatments (including those at Ricari), with masks using the energy of different light wavelengths to promote collagen, improve skin’s texture, and encourage cellular turnover. Because it is not a new or protected technology, LED gizmos can be pretty inexpensive to find (Rio has written about a $52 LED wand she uses to “stop pimples in their tracks”). When you’re paying more for an LED device, it’s probably for better design, ease of use, customizable programs, or simply more bulbs. The gold standard beloved by celebrity estheticians like faciast Joanna Czech is the Déesse mask , versions of which Czech sells for a cool $1,900 (and Amazon sells for $2500 ).

When researching LED devices that might be comparable, Zahn found an FDA-approved photorejuvenation mask from CSBY on Amazon, which she now uses everyday at home. She says the quality of light that her CSBY mask and the Déesse mask emit is basically the same, though the Déesse offers eight low-light treatment modes compared to the CSBY’s seven, and the Déesse has a whopping 770 LED lights compared to her CSBY model’s 192. [Editor’s note: Zahn’s CSBY mask is currently sold out, but the mask shown is a very close cousin; it also offers seven light treatment modes, but is a bit smaller than Zahn’s model that partially covers the neck as well as face, and likely has fewer LED lights.]  At a basic level, the Déesse’s higher bulb count means it emits more LED light than the CSBY mask, but Zahn says it’s hard to tell “at what point do the number of lights make a noticeable difference?” More important than the number of lights is consistency in use, according to Zahn, who says if you use the CSBY mask for 15–20 minutes everyday you will notice a difference in the brightness and tone of your skin after about a month. She adds: “Some of my clients who’ve followed the same protocol have told me it reduces light wrinkles.”

For a Bellicon rebounder

Stamina 36-Inch Folding Trampoline

Rebounding — a fancy way of saying jumping on a personal trampoline — for 10 minutes a day is the quickest way to activate your lymph system, and tons of celebrities (from Cindy Crawford to Gisele Bündchen to Gwyneth Paltrow to Goldie Hawn) have said they’re regular rebounders. Beyond being “great for the mood,” Zahn says such jumping offers great “cardio while being low impact on the joints,” in addition to “facilitating lymphatic drainage and being sneakily good for the skin, because of the increased circulation.” The gold standard of rebounders is made by Bellicon, which sells its entry level model for $499, but can charge a lot more once you start customizing it based on your weight, size, and even color preferences.

For $30, you can jump on Zahn’s favorite inexpensive model, which she says is a “totally fine rebounder!” It may look like just another trampoline, but it has tension bands (considered better for your joints and far quieter than metal coils) and can fold up to save space. Though, she admits, “assembling it was a task, I recommend two people.” Zahn also notes it has a slightly smaller jumping space than the Bellicon, which limits your side-to-side movement. If you’re willing to invest a bit more, for half the price of a Bellicon, you can get her other preferred model — the JumpSport — which Amazon reviewers agree is a worthy rebounder. The JumpSport looks more like the Bellicon in form, with sturdy legs, a comparable jumping surface, and exposed bungees (it only comes in one color, though, and can’t be customized for weight and height). It also is not foldable, but neither are any Bellicon models.

“My skin always feels so clean after doing a mud mask, so I make it a weekly ritual. This one from AHAVA includes kaolin clay and Dead Sea mud, and it has a nice cooling feel. I’ll apply it all over my face and neck before hopping in the bath, and when it feels dry, I turn on the tap to wash it off."

—  Melanie Yates , senior home editor

Lord Jones High CBD Formula Bath Salts

“These detoxifying bath salts are beyond relaxing and great for sore muscles. Infused with 240 milligrams of broad-spectrum CBD oil, arnica, Epsom and Himalayan pink salts, and calendula flowers, this botanical blend smells amazing and turns a regular bath into a soothing spa experience."  —  Danielle St. Pierre , senior food & drink editor

St. Helena Spa Robe

"This Turkish robe is the holy grail of relaxation. The waffle weave on the outside makes it look like one of those expensive hotel robes you always want to steal, and the towel-like terry cotton on the inside is super practical for drying off after you step out of the bath.

“Trust me, you're going to buy this with the generous intention of gifting it to someone you love who needs pampering, but then you're going to keep it all for yourself because it's so luxe. Hey, there's no shame in the self-care game!"  — Kayla Ramsey , visuals editor & photographer

Haven Towel Warmer

"Some say that the little things in life bring us the most joy — bear-hugging a fresh load of clothes from your dryer, having a warm cup to grasp when it’s chilly outside, or slipping into your own bed after a weekend of traveling. Having a towel warmer is a lot like that.

“Nobody needs a towel warmer, but it’s such a luxurious nice-to-have item that you won’t want to live without once you get one of your own. I gifted this towel warmer to my mother a year ago and she still hasn’t stopped raving about it."  —   Brandon Carte , technology editor

Boy Smells KUSH Candle

"I'll be honest: I love the smell of weed. But for those of you who choose not to dabble in the herb, don't let this candle's name trick you into thinking it smells dank. Yes, it has hints of cannabis, but it's rounded out with suede, white musk, tulip, and amber for a floral fragrance with a kick.

“Words can barely describe how hooked I am to this candle, and it's a must-have for me even if I'm having a quick 'face mask and chill' moment."   —  Jennifer Hussein , beauty editor

Birdies The Starling flat

"It’s a shoe! It’s a slipper! It’s kind of … both? Birdies are soft like a slipper — not to mention they have quilted satin and memory foam on the inside — but they also have a nonslip rubber sole, as well as arch and heel support. So you can wear them as you lounge around the house or when you run errands, and no one will know just how comfy you are. And you won’t want to take them off once you get inside, because it’s like you’re walking on a cloud.

“It’s basically the cross between a regular shoe and a slipper that I didn’t know I needed."

—  Caitlyn Fitzpatrick , news & trends editor

Dr. Brandt MAGNETIGHT Age-Defier Mask

"This magnet mask was one of those fad-type Instagram beauty trends that I initially tried just for fun, but the second I took it off, I realized that it was so much more than a novelty product. Just one use transformed the look and feel of my skin, brightening my complexion and smoothing uneven spots with a surge of hydration.

"It doesn’t dry down or require any harsh scrubbing for removal, making it much more gentile than most traditional masks on the market. Instead, it comes with a triangular magnet that pulls away mask particles when brushed close to your skin, leaving behind a thin serum that’s intended to be rubbed in once your face is fresh. Because you aren’t washing away the beneficial properties of the mask, they’ll linger long after you take it off."

—  Zarah Kavarana , associate editor

Birkenstock Regenerating Oil Face And Body

“First, you’re thinking like... ‘Birkenstock body oil? Why?’ Well, I am a self-proclaimed body oil aficionado and this is my top, top favorite. It is delicate and light while still being intensely moisturizing. It smells delightful and mature but not like my dear sweet nana. I honestly don’t want to rush through the bottle, so I only use it when I need a pick me up or am going out to be seeeeeeen ."

 —  Latifah Miles , parenting editor

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask

“Everything on my body feels drier for some reason since I’ve been stuck at home, so moisturizing everything has been essential for me. I’ve been using this lip mask for a few months now, and it’s a game-changer. I put it on right before bed, and every morning I wake up with smooth, hydrated lips. It’s my favorite product in my nighttime routine."

—  Erica Murphy , director of SEO and content

goop Beauty G.Tox Ultimate Dry Brush

"There's just something so soothing about this dry brush. The bristles aren't nearly as rough as others, but it still gives you that deep exfoliation you're craving. Quick tip: Add a few drops of your favorite body oil to this before dry brushing — seriously, it's a life-changing move."

—  Jennifer Hussein , beauty editor

Bathing Culture Mind and Body Wash

"I was never a big fan of body wash until I tried this organic, biodegradable, all-purpose soap from Bathing Culture. Inspired by the smell of redwood trees in Northern California, this herbal body wash is woodsy and fresh and has quickly become my go-to for a long, hot shower at the end of the day."

—  Danielle St. Pierre , s enior food & drink editor

Lumineux Oral Essentials Teeth Whitening Strips

"My work-from-home life has three speeds: coffee, tea, and red wine. Unfortunately, those all do a number on the sparkle of my teeth, so I’ve turned to these nontoxic whitening strips.

"The strips don’t have that gross bleach taste, and they don’t cause the awful 'zingers' (those shooting pains in your teeth and gums) like traditional white strips do. I feel like I just went to the dentist after using them — even though I’ve definitely missed my 6-month check-up!"

REN Moroccan Rose Otto Bath Oil

"I never thought I would choose a bath oil over a bath bomb, but this is the product that’s turned me. This moisturizing oil froths up nicely in a running bath, so you’ll get plenty of bubbles, and the pure rose scent is incredible. This 4-ounce bottle also lasts a surprisingly long time since you just need a small amount of it to get a luxurious amount of bubbles and fragrance."

 —  Melanie Yates , senior home editor

GLAMGLOW SUPERMUD Charcoal Instant Treatment Mask

"This is my all-time favorite mask because you can actually see the oil it sucks out of your T-zone pores. When I apply it with a face mask brush, it goes on smooth and I feel fancy AF as it works its tingly magic. Sure, it's a splurge, but it lives up to the hype for those of us with oily complexions.

“This is the mask I buy on repeat, because cheaper mud masks just don't live up to my skincare standards."

—  Kayla Ramsey , visuals editor & photographer

Herbivore Botanicals Coco Rose Coconut Oil Body Polish

"I’ve never been a body scrub person, but I can’t get enough of the one! I like to use it all over my body (besides my face) after I’m done shampooing and conditioning my hair. It makes my legs extra soft after shaving, and the scent is light, fresh, and something I want to bottle up and wear all the time."

R+Co Dart Pomade Stick

“Unlike scoopable pomades and unpredictable sprays, this small but mighty stick gives hair great control and hold, but can be strategically applied only where you need it. Use it sparingly to tame frizzy fly-aways and staticky strands without leaving behind an oily sheen, or go all-in for a slicked-back shorter ‘do."

Read Zarah's full review of the R+Co Dart Pomade Stick.

Kitsch Ice Roller

"When I am feeling extra fancy with my face cleansing routine, I like to break out this ice roller. It feels nice on my skin and I swear my pores always seem smaller after using it. It’s a great addition to any serum."

—  Latifah Miles , parenting editor

Claus Porto Body Moisturizer in Banho

“I’m obsessed with everything about this moisturizer. The scent is intoxicating, it packs just the right amount of moisture without feeling greasy, and a little goes a long way.

“Because it’s a nicer moisturizer than my regular Jergens, using it makes me feel like I’m at the spa in the comfort of my own home."

How To Have A DIY Self Care Spa Day At Home: Complete Guide

A Perfect DIY Self Care Spa Day At Home: The Complete Guide

In my last post, while listing some of the best things to do while stuck at home , I mentioned that an at-home spa day is an excellent way to get in some self-care, self-love, and even some much-needed pampering!!

We could all use some of that these days, am I right??!!

With these trying times, the need for self-care and prioritizing our emotional wellness is HUGE. And even as some states begin lifting stay at home orders, the emotional toll is and likely shall continue to weigh heavily on quite a few of us.

Now, if you are dealing with stress, anxiety, or depression (which let’s face it, who isn’t at least a little right now), you might be surprised at how something as simple as a spa day can be quite therapeutic, and even, might I say, wonderfully magical for lifting your mood.

And given the fact that it may be a while before we can safely go to spas and get the services we are accustomed to receiving at them, is what makes right now a good time to consider creating your own spa day at home.

So, whether you’re in need of some seriously relaxing self-care time to cope with your current emotions or you’re interested in having the perfect, treat yo’ self spa-like experience at home, look no further… we’ve got the best tips, steps, DIY’s, and ideas to get you embracing your inner zen and loving yourself from head to toe!!

The Benefits Of Trying A Spa Day At Home

  • Stress & Anxiety Relief : Just a few of our suggested relaxing at-home spa treatments & steps can help calm the mind.
  • Better Sleep : If you decide to try our Cleopatra bath treatment at night, you may find that it helps you to unwind for a better night’s sleep .
  • Alleviate Depression : A spa day at home can serve as a distraction and way to clear your mind of negative thoughts. Additionally, we have some ideas that could help with increasing seratonin…the “happy” hormone!!
  • Saves Money : Going to the spa can be exorbitantly expensive, which is why planning a spa day at home can help you feel pampered and treated whenever you want, without putting a major dent in your wallet.
  • Lastly, a spa day at home is an easy way to address any beauty concerns you previously haven’t had the time to get to like split ends, dull skin, cracked feet, and more!!

Planning An At-Home Spa Day: Steps For Success

When creating your at-home spa day, its best to get a little organized. Follow these next five steps, and you’ll soon be on your way to making the experience blissfully complete!

Step 1: Figure Out When You Want To Have Your Special, Pamper Day At Home

Decide on the best day and time for it. Evening, in the morning, during the afternoon?? Depending on your schedule, if you have kids, are working, or even working from home, take a minute to figure out when is an ideal chunk of time for your “at home spa session”!

Perhaps you’d like to do it with your mom, a sister, or your daughter?? Coordinate with one another and figure out when you both will be free.

calendar with text overlay spa day at home figure out when you want to have your special pampering day

Step 2: Pick Your Spa Day Treatments & At-Home Activities

Start thinking about what treatment you might want to try. Something for your hair, your body, your nails, your skin, perhaps??

Not sure?? Worry not, we’ve got a list of five fabulous spa treatments and activities you can pick & choose from listed further down in this article.

Step 3: Location, Location, Location!!

Where will you have your at-home spa day?? Would the bathroom work best, or perhaps your bedroom, maybe a room with a tv, or one where you can play some mellow music. Of course, this will depend on what spa treatment you decide to indulge in, but you can start thinking about spaces in your home that might work.

Step 4: Create A Spa-Like Atmosphere!!

One thing I love about spas (this is what actually makes them most successful) is how they know exactly what to use to engage our senses and quickly get us into that relaxed, stress-free, mental zone.

It can be broken down into an exact science when you think about it. Everything is designed to help you wind down the very second you walk in the door and check-in for your appointment… The process involves strategic scents (smell), sounds (hearing), comfort (touch), and taste !!

So if you really want to make your at-home spa day a realistic experience, the goal is to do the very same thing, and it’s easier than you think.

Here are some rather fun ways to go about it!!

Scents (Smell)

Ever wonder why you feel so rejuvenated after a spa session?? Sure that massage and all that pampering helped, but the aromatherapy also played a critical role in helping your mind & body to relax and release.

When it comes to scents, don’t underestimate the power of essential oils and a diffuser for this!! In fact, studies have shown that some oils impact our mood by stimulating the brain and serotonin (the “happy” hormone).

*You could also try aromatherapy candles if you prefer that instead.

The truth is a spa day just isn’t a spa day without a diffuser and essential oils. I can’t stress enough to you just how vital aromatherapy is for making your spa day complete. Incorporating your sense of smell into the experience can make a world of difference!!!

Check out our list of key essential oils commonly used in spas that you could consider using to create the most realistic spa-like atmosphere in your home.

  • Lavender – calming scent great for reducing anxiety and promoting better sleep
  • Eucalyptus – soothing, relaxing, & mind-clearing scent
  • Ylang-ylang – sweet aroma great for calming and reducing stress
  • Chamomile – calming scent and can help with depression
  • Orange – energizing, and mood-boosting
  • Bergamot – mood lifting
  • Lemongrass – soothing, uplifting, & anxiety-reducing
  • Rosemary – enhances focus and helps with depression
  • Peppermint – pleasing scent that can reduce stress and improve irritability
  • Cedarwood – calming scent for relieving stress and anxiety
  • Green Tea – relaxes your mind, while simultaneous enhancing focus

A few combinations you could try in a diffuser for a more customized, spa-like scent…

  • Lavender + Ylang-ylang
  • Cedarwood + Lavender + Orange
  • Lavender + Bergamot + Grapefruit
  • Green Tea + Lemongrass
  • Ylang Ylang +Chamomile + Lavender

PRO Tip: I’ve heard Burke Williams uses a combo of these oils for their signature scent…lavender, lemongrass, geranium , and eucalyptus.

To truly make your spa-like experience more authentic, you should consider finding some calming instrumentals and peaceful music to play . You could even try a meditation cd if you want to take this devoted wellness time to another level.

Depending on your treatment and activities of choice, you may opt for PJs, sweats, a robe, fluffy slippers, or warm “just out the dryer” towels!! Grab whatever makes you feel cozy, comfy, or snug!!

What is your beverage of choice to relax or unwind?? Some calming herbal teas? A glass of wine?? Or maybe some infused “spa-like” water??

Infused water is the icing on the cake for creating a luxurious spa experience. Add some delicious fruit with mint leaves or try cucumbers with some lemon. And for a little extra zing, you can even use sparkling water!!

  • Infused Spa Water Recipes From Various US Based Spas

A Few Herbal Tea Options:

  • Peppermint Tea

Step 5: Figure Out Everything You Need For Your Spa Day (Supplies & Essentials)

What do you need for an at-home spa day?

The answer will depend on two things… first, (Step 4) how you choose to create a spa-like atmosphere, and second, (Step 2) what you pick for your spa day treatments & at-home activities. Ask yourself these questions…

  • What will make it feel most realistic?
  • What will lift my mood, make me feel rejuvenated, help me to unwind, destress, or relax?
  • Are there any beauty concerns I have, or that have I been meaning to get to?

Now, as promised, to help you decide what you will do on your spa day, you can use the next list of 5 fabulous spa day treatment & at-home activities ideas. But also, to help with planning and determining what you need, we have a FREE Spa Day At Home Checklist you can use!!!

5 Fabulous Spa Day Treatment & At-Home Activity Ideas

1) enjoy some bath soaking beauty time.

There is nothing like a relaxing bath to soothe your body, your mind, and give you super soft, smooth skin! You can add some bubbles, rose petals, bath bombs, or a few drops of essential oils. Light some candles, dim the lights, and get your beautifying soak on!!

*Note: Use essential oils along with a carrier oil like Jojoba.

A Few Bathing Beauty Options:

  • Try this Cleopatra Lavender & Honey Milk Bath recipe !! Not only will your skin benefit, but it can help you unwind for a good night’s rest.
  • Add a scoopful of Coconut Oil or 2 Tablespoons of Almond Oil to your bath water as it runs for irresistibly soft & supple skin!!
  • Bubble up with an Epsom Salt, Shea Butter, & Almond Oil bath !!
  • Enjoy this next Jojoba, Chamomile, & Rose Bath Soak!!

Jojoba, Chamomile, & Rose Bath Soak Recipe:

  • Combine a tablespoon of Jojoba Oil , three drops of Chamomile , and four drops of Rose Oil in a bowl.
  • After filling your tub, turn off your water and pour in oils from the bowl.
  • Stir into the tub water.
  • Then get in, sit back, and relax in this luxurious smelling bathing experience!

2) Try Face Steaming & A Face Mask

Before steaming, you want to always start with a clean face. So wash your face with a gentle cleanser in lukewarm water, removing makeup, dirt, sweat, and oil.

FACE STEAMING OPTION ONE:

  • Boil a pot of water.
  • Once boiled, add the water to a heat-safe bowl.
  • Add one to two drops of Rose Hip Seed Oil.
  • Next, drape a towel over your head and move your face, so it’s a few inches from the water (don’t get so close that it burns).
  • Relax and breathe deeply in while the steam opens your pores (approx. 10 minutes).
  • Next, apply a face mask (PRO TIP: clay masks work very well after steaming).

FACE STEAMING OPTION TWO:

Now, another more simplified option is to use a face steamer designed to work along with essential oils like this one . In this case, my suggestion is to add some Rose Hip Seed Oil to the built-in aromatherapy basket. Then after steaming, you would apply your face mask.

3) Treat Your Locks To Some TLC With A Hair Mask

Whether your hair is dry and damaged or you simply want to keep it healthy, soft, and silky, a hair mask is an ideal treatment to try!! And, the best thing about hair masks is that they’re excellent for multi-tasking. You can apply one, then watch a movie or move on to another beauty treatment while it soaks in.

A Few Hair Mask Options:

  • Unbeatable Shine Mask: R+Co Television Perfect Hair Masque – A Beauty Award-Winning mask that uses Coconut Oil, Murumuru Butter, Olive Oil, Pequi Oil, & Abyssinian Oil to nourish and moisturize hair for a larger than life, “lights, camera, action” TV ready glossy shine!!
  • Mask For Curly Gals: SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Marfura Oil Masque Hair Treatment – Drench your curls in moisture with this mask that uses honey, oils, and butters to give your curls a healthy, frizz-free bounce!!
  • Dry, Brittle Hair Mask: I love this one by OGX for a little once a week pick-me-up for my hair!! It leaves it incredibly soft and healthy-looking every time I use it. This mask uses argan oil and silk proteins to repair and moisturize your tresses.
  • For a more natural beauty approach during your at-home spa time, you could try a DIY hair mask. Need Some DIY Hair Mask Ideas?? Click Here To Get Our FREE DIY HAIR MASKS RECIPE GUIDE!! Or check out the article here… 7 Simple DIY Hair Masks For Dry Damaged Hair.

4) Give Yourself A Pedicure & Soak Your Tired, Achy Feet

This is one of my go-to spa night routines!! You can do this while watching a movie or catching up on Netflix’s latest shows, so long as you have the right portable soaking tools!! If not, you can simply use your tub. Now, grab your robe, a favorite beverage, and submerge those heels & toes, Beauties!!

  • Remove your old polish using a cotton ball with nail polish remover.
  • Add hot water with bath salts to a foot spa or simply use your tub!!
  • Try to soak 15-30 minutes.
  • After a good long soak, time for that smoothing with a pumice stone or foot file (this one is by far the best one I’ve ever used) !!
  • Grab your clippers and file… clip and shape away!!
  • Dip once more in the water and then dry with your towel.
  • Now massage in some lotion for as long as you’d like.
  • Using a cotton ball with some alcohol, remove any lotion from the surface of your nails (this will help when applying your polish).
  • Put on your toe dividers/separator .
  • Start with a base coat .
  • Next, apply your sexy nail polish (2 coats, let dry a few minutes between). You can use a wooden cuticle stick to fix any issues with color that falls outside the nail edges and to clean the lines.
  • Last, add a top coat !!

5) Try An Exfoliating Body Scrub & Apply Some Body Oils

Using an exfoliating body scrub can be a wonderfully rewarding treatment that is incredibly easy to do from home. You can brighten up your complexion, increase circulation, and ultimately give yourself a radiant, healthy glow. Then if you follow it with lovely body oils, you can add some extra softness to that unbeatable glow factor!

Here are steps along with some tips for getting the most out of this kind of treatment…

  • Start in the shower using warm to hot water without the scrub for about 5 to 10 minutes. Just relax and let the water soften your skin.
  • After 5-10 minutes of the water trickling down your skin, turn off the running shower.
  • Now, take the exfoliating scrub and apply it to your damp skin. You want to exfoliate by gently moving in a circular motion using very soft pressure. Work from the neck down, or if you prefer, you can go from the toes up, just don’t forget to hit any trouble spots like the elbows or back of the thighs.
  • Once done, turn the shower back on and rinse off with warm water.
  • When you get out the shower, lightly pat your skin dry with a towel but allow your skin to remain still slightly damp.
  • Immediately apply your body oil while the skin is still slightly damp (this helps to seal in additional moisture).
  • Grab your rob, sit back, and drink some tea or your infused spa water you made earlier! Let the oil absorb into your skin as you relax.

A Few Body Oil Options:

  • L’Occitane Almond Supple Skin Body Oil
  • Hempz Body Oil Pineapple & Honey Melon

DIY Body Scrub Recipe:

  • Measure out a 1/2 cup of Brown Sugar, 1/4 cup of Coarse Sugar, 1/3 cup of Jojoba Oil, 1/2 tablespoon of Honey, & 1/8 teaspoon of Orange Essential Oil .
  • Combine all ingredients in a bowl and stir until consistently mixed together.
  • You can then store your scrub in a container like this until you are ready for your shower.

*For this recipe, if you find you need more, you can double up on the measurements. Also, if you find the scrub to be too thick, add more Jojoba Oil. If you find the scrub to be too thin, add in more sugar.

Spa Day Add-On

One last addition you may opt to try for your day of beauty would be a treatment for your eyes using cucumbers like this one here , or one using tea bags like this . You could play some music, lay back, de-stress, and soothe your puffy, tired eyes!!

The Wrap Up!!

Well, Beauties, I hope you take some time this week and give yourself a little treat with an at-home spa day!!

You certainly don’t have to do all the treatments suggested; it’s totally up to you how many you decide to indulge in. But I definitely recommend getting a little creative and planning your spa-like atmosphere using your senses.

Steps 2 and 4 will be vital in taking your at-home spa experience from a “meh” one to an “I feel like a brand new woman, let me revel in my new Aphrodite goddess vibe” kind of one. So use Our FREE Spa Day At Home Made Easy Checklist to help you plan and figure out what you need. Enjoy your pampering time, Beauties!!!

Why Decked-Out Home Spas Are All the Rage Right Now

Mani-pedi station? Champagne bar? Count us in.

home spa elle decor

Above: In the actress Marisa Berenson’s Marrakech home, natural light shines dramatically over a steaming indoor pool, perfect for isolation and an emotional reset.

Quinn is currently working on a home spa in Los Angeles and another in Dallas, where the homeowner requested a spray-tan booth. “They want mani-pedi stations and hairstylist stations,” he says. Each spa is designed to host a gaggle of friends, with two to four stations plus an effervescent touch: “There’s always a Champagne bar as part of it,” Quinn says.

Folks really are looking for “private sanctuary spaces,” according to Andrew Kline, design director of New York’s Workshop/APD . “People are now into wellness in a more experiential way,” he says. Some of his clients are limiting their home gyms to the essentials—a Peloton, a Mirror, a dumbbell set—so that they can budget the extra expense and square footage for a sauna, soaking tub, and steam room. “It’s the idea that fitness is about not just working out, but also having moments of relaxation and contemplative time,” he says.

Tucked into the closet of an already tranquil primary bedroom Kline recently designed on Nantucket, a spiral staircase leads to a subterranean restorative refuge with a personal hammam, massage room, and hydrotherapy shower. In another of his Nantucket projects, you enter the spa by descending stairs directly into a hot tub. After a soak, you move into an adjacent dry space that has a sauna and a steam room. Such spa sorcery demands a high level of technological intervention, such as HVAC systems meant for wet air and pool consultants to ensure that the marble you select for the walls won’t discolor at the water level.

In the Palm Beach home of a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader, New York architecture and design firm StoneFox whipped up an entire floor devoted to health and fabulosity, with a gym, hair salon, mani-pedi stations, and two treatment rooms “for body wraps or mud wraps,” architect David Fox says. Besides the client’s marble-sheathed steam room and infrared teak sauna, a cold plunge pool awaits to jolt them into the moment, thanks to refrigerated piping set to 52 degrees. The client has “a larger-than-life personality, so she wanted the spot to be really bold and fun,” Fox says. “When you walk in, it’s all papered in flamingo wallpaper, and there’s this Ico Parisi sculptural lounge sofa in the corner covered in pink velvet.”

home spa elle decor

Indeed, designers say that one thing separating the home spa from the public versions—aside from not having to angle for the best divan—is a lack of government regulations. “You don’t have all the grab bars and signs that are required in a commercial environment,” says Quinn, who replaced a Vero Beach, Florida, client’s garage with a spa salon inspired by Miami Beach’s Faena Hotel, with black-and-white checkered floors, cross-grained and butterflied walnut cabinetry, gleaming gold fixtures, and hidden LED lights.

“It’s something we really try to push to our clients.”

If this all feels too-too, you can still find ways to do you . Clients of West Coast firm Pulp Design Studios are tucking beverage centers and refrigerator drawers into their bathroom vanities; the latter keep sundry face creams and jade face rollers chilled. Along with heated towel bars and underfloor heating, MrSteam steam showers with Kohler chromatherapy and aromatherapy fixtures are one of their most frequent bathroom upgrade requests. “It’s something we really try to push to our clients,” says Pulp’s cofounder, Carolina V. Gentry, citing health benefits such as reducing stress. That is to say that a home spa might be just what the doctor ordered.

No home spa is complete without the right cloth to wick away perspiration. Here’s what the experts recommend.

Matouk “The quality is so good. These towels don’t lose their shape. They also have asimple detail around the perimeter. A white towel with a little trim is always nice.” —David Fox

Looking for ways to create a self-care spa at home? With just a few small upgrades to your bathroom, such as indoor plants and aromatherapy, you can find your oasis without leaving your home.

Here are some tips for planning a DIY home spa day for an immersive hydrotherapy experience.

What Is Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy involves using water in various forms and temperatures to provide therapeutic treatment to the body. Hydrotherapy can range from aquatic exercise to a steam spa or sauna. Ancient civilizations used hydrotherapy for its health benefits, and the practice continues today. Now, people use hydrotherapy in their day-to-day lives, including evening baths, warm showers, or even a combination of both .

Spas are one of the best places to engage in hydrotherapy because spas provide a soothing, immersive experience. When you step into a spa, your mind has the space to breathe and focus on your self-care. Here are a few ways to prep your bathroom to get the same benefits as going to a spa.

Pre-Hydrotherapy Rituals

Add some plants to the bathroom.

Research shows that interacting with indoor plants can have a positive impact on your mental health. We recommend adding a few plants to your bathroom for a home spa remedy that’s as scenic as it is rejuvenating. Some plants, such as aloe, offer health benefits that make them the perfect addition to a spa day.

Heat the Bath to the Perfect Temperature

Spa days are all about focusing on your comfort. When you fill your bathtub with water, you want to ensure that the water is at a comfortable temperature for you.

Hands under faucet in bathtub

The ideal bath temperature is between 90 and 105 degrees Fahrenheit (or 32 to 40 degrees Celsius). To test the water temperature, place your hand in the water. If you can keep your hand in the water comfortably, then it’s the ideal temperature.

Warm baths offer multiple health benefits that can help you regain your sense of peace, such as improving sleep and potentially reducing blood pressure. So, let the water run until the tub is almost full and feel the tension wash away.

Use Aromatherapy Diffusers

Aromatherapy involves using essential oils to help you feel more relaxed. Aromatherapy diffusers spread the essential oils’ scents around a room using water and airwaves. To create a comfortable home spa in your bathroom, add a few essential oils into a diffuser. We recommend oils such as lavender, chamomile, or sandalwood to help you ease your mind.

Listen to A Relaxing Playlist

According to the University of Nevada at Reno , relaxing music can help soothe your muscles and manage stress. That’s why many spas play ambient music to help you take your mind off the day’s stress.

To set the scene for your home spa, create some ambiance with a relaxing bathtime playlist . We created a playlist that combines classical, instrumental, and ambient music to help you find a few moments of self-care. You can access the playlist for free on YouTube .

Hydrotherapy Rituals

Create a tub shower combo.

Woman standing in walk-in bath as she takes a shower

Can’t decide between the safety and comfort of a walk-in bath or the convenience of a shower? A tub shower combo delivers the best of both worlds. This hybrid option adds flexibility to your bathing routine to accommodate users of varying needs while saving space in your bathroom.

The KOHLER ® Walk-In Bath can be outfitted with the Shower Package to create a tub shower combo. It features the gooseneck shower arm that allows you to take a safe standing shower and the KOHLER Bath Screen that keeps water contained inside the tub.

Soak In Epsom Salt

Epsom salt is an essential ingredient in a successful spa day at home. According to Medical News Today , Epsom salt offers key health benefits, including reducing stress, treating muscle inflammation, and helping restore dry skin. If you want to use Epsom salt in your bath, run your bath water and add two cups of salt while the tub fills. Soak in the bathtub for no longer than twenty minutes.

Use a Handshower

Handshowers are a great way to enjoy hydrotherapy if you have sensitive skin. With a handshower, you can gently run water over sore muscles to help you relax while simultaneously soothing your skin. You can also use a handshower to give your scalp a soothing massage.

Enjoy a Refreshing Drink

While you’re relaxing in your spa, rejuvenate with a cool drink to help you enjoy the moment. You can try a few DIY recipes, including limeades and spritzers , that your tastebuds will love.

Post-Hydrotherapy Rituals

Rehydrate your skin.

Once you’re out of the spa, replenish your skin with a refreshing lotion or cream. You can use one that you bought or make your own lotion filled with natural ingredients.

Get Cozy in Comfortable Linen

After you finish your hydrotherapy day, continue the cool-down process with some comfortable linens. A cozy bath towel or robe is a great way for you to relax before bedtime or bring a clear state of mind into the rest of your day.

10 Ways to Transform Your Home Into a Spa Right Now

Bask in that lavender aroma!

You don't have to leave the house to get a quality spa treatment. While your home might feel far from serene—say, if you live in a small studio apartment or have little ones running around—there are things you can to do to create a more soothing atmosphere. "The big thing about a spa is that it’s a multi-sensory experience, " says Bonnie Friend of Spabreaks.com , a spa booking agency in the UK. "It’s about sight, sound, scent, and the power of touch." How your body perceives the space around it really plays into the spa experience. We rounded up 10 ways to help you channel that spa sensation at home. You can also check out these tips on making your bedroom more relaxing .

Leave lavender under your pillow

Everspring lavender pure essential oil.

Lavender Pure Essential Oil

“Scent is extremely powerful, it can change your mood in an instant,” Friend says, explaining that finding small ways to bring aromatherapy into your home can really make a big difference. She suggests adding a few drops of lavender to a tissue in the morning, then leaving that tissue under your pillow until bedtime. By night, many of the drops will have evaporated, leaving behind a light aroma guaranteed to help you unwind.

Use rose water for household tasks

While ironing clothes may seem like the devil of all chores, Friend suggests that you can turn it into a more therapeutic activity by adding rose water hydrosol (distilled rose water) in your steam iron. Not only will this leave your clothes and linens freshly scented, but, as you iron, the perfumed steam will freshen the air. Plus, rose water can be very good for cleansing the skin. If you don’t have time for a full face mask, a little splash of this flower potion can leave your skin feeling healthy.

Create a clean space for yourself

Creating a neat, tidy, and isolated space for yourself to just “be” is so important, says Friend. "Make it somewhere you can retreat just for you, and imbue it with those scents and sounds that mean a lot to you," she says. Having a place where you can escape to, away from others living in your house, is so important to just check-in with yourself. Make sure to leave your electronics behind—it can all wait.

Dress in clothes that make you feel pampered

Tapping into our sense of touch, what you wear at home can really set the mood. While you might feel compelled to dress down in sweats or flannel jammies, Friend reminds us to dress ourselves in items that don’t feel messy. Choose fabrics that feel good on your skin. She suggests buying loungewear made of soft blend wool, silk, or satin. When it comes to linens, good-quality, simple cotton can really do the trick.

Light some candles

Candles are a big part of the spa experience not just for their scents, but in how they change a room's lighting. A few glowing candles in a darkened room can create a rather holistic experience. No need to save your votives for special occasions or limit them to night use. “Light it in the middle of the afternoon for the sheer enjoyment of it,” Friend says.

Make your own sound bath...

Friend explains that sound bath healing has become an increasingly popular practice in spas. During a sound bath (which involves no actual water, by the way) clients will lay down on a mat as an expert plays instruments like a Tibetan singing bowl, drums, or shakers. Fortunately, you can find a handful of videos on YouTube like the one below to help you virtually experience a sound bath. We suggest laying down on a yoga mat, your bed, or sitting cross-legged in a safe and quiet place as you immerse yourself in the soothing chimes.

…or forest bath

We already know that plants are scientifically proven to reduce anxiety . But to really reap the wellness benefits of greenery indoors, a tiny succulent won't cut it. Go big when picking out plants and place them in areas of the home where you can really enjoy them. Friend explains that “forest bathing” is a popular activity as spas have been bringing outdoor elements inside. The practice actually originated in Japan: Known as shinrin-yoku , which translates to bathing in the forest atmosphere, it's not a hike or run through the woods, but rather allowing oneself to savor the sounds, smells, and sights of nature, and ultimately let the forest in.

Cedarwood Tea Tree Soap

Cedarwood Tea Tree Soap

As with sound bath healing, the forest bathing does not involve actually bathing yourself. However, the bathroom is still a good place to try and replicate the experience. Try adding some eucalyptus to your shower, using soaps with natural earthy fragrances, and listening to nature sounds in the background while you bathe. Spotify has a whole genre dedicated to soothing music.

Choose products scented with essential oils

Even if you’re not a huge fan of burning essential oils, using products that contain them on the daily make all the difference when you’re washing your hands or wiping down the kitchen counter. Swap out chemical cleaners for some more natural cleaning products that won't leave your home smelling funky. Target's Everspring line of cleaning products is not only eco-friendly, but 100% created with natural fragrances. Choose from options like their Lemon & Mint All-Purpose Cleaner, Lavender & Bergamot Liquid Laundry Detergent, Germainium & Herbs Liquid Hand Soap, Mandarin & Ginger Room Spray, and more. The line also offers essential oils.

Invest in an infrared sleeping bag

While most of us don't have the luxury of installing a sauna at home , you can mimic the experience with an infrared sleeping bag or blanket. These blankets hug your body with heat helping you sweat out all the toxins while soothing your aches and pains.

Infrared Sauna Blanket

Take a Little extra time on yourself

Having the right products is one thing, but taking the time to appreciate them is another. "When it comes to washing your face in the morning or washing your hands in the day, take a little extra time to really massage products into your skin, breathe scents in deeply, and pay attention to how everything feels," Friend says. Simple steps, like applying body lotion or spritzing the home with fragrance, can feel all the more special when you take the time to absorb them.

HHS Secretary Becerra and U.S. Trade Representative Tai Commemorate Third Anniversary of Atlanta Spa Murders

Co-Chairs of the White House Initiative and President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders issue joint statement to underscore the Biden-Harris Administration's commitment to combat anti-Asian hate and gender-based violence three years since the tragic shootings in Georgia.

WASHINGTON – Today, Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai issued a joint statement on the third anniversary of the 2021 Atlanta spa murders, in which eight people – including six women of Asian descent – lost their lives at the hands of a gunman who targeted three separate Asian-owned businesses in Georgia.

"Three years ago, eight beautiful lives were cut short by acts of senseless gun violence that shocked the conscience of our nation amid an already disturbing surge in anti-Asian sentiment. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of all those affected by the tragic events of March 16, 2021, and we continue to share in the grief that remains for many Asian Americans, both in Atlanta and across the nation.

"As people of all faiths and backgrounds gather in Georgia to mark this somber anniversary, we are also reminded of the Atlanta community's resilience and unbreakable spirit. Our White House Initiative and President's Advisory Commission have been honored to work collaboratively with the local community in Georgia to confront gender-based violence and anti-Asian bias, tackle the epidemic of gun violence, and ensure that hate has no safe harbor.

"The Biden-Harris Administration remains committed to doing everything in its power to ensure that all Americans can live in dignity and safety. We are continuing to implement the first-ever national strategy to advance equity, justice, and opportunity for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) communities. Last year, the Administration also released its inaugural plan to end gender-based violence and launched the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention . And under the leadership of President Biden and Vice President Harris, we are taking significant action to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate resources – especially mental health services – to impacted communities and to building a brighter future for all Americans."

In Advance of 4th Anniversary of March 25th Pandemic Executive Order, Tedisco Calls for Justice for Nursing Home Victims

James Tedisco

March 18, 2024

  • Coronavirus Pandemic; executive orders
  • COVID-19 Nursing Home Deaths; Investigation

From a rally at the Capitol in fall 2020 when I first called for an independent investigation into the nursing home deaths

Where’s Governor Kathy Hochul’s long-promised and way-overdue post pandemic “independent” policy review and when will the public see it?

That’s the question senator jim tedisco (r,c-ballston lake) today is again asking as the fourth anniversary nears of the notorious march 25th executive order by former governor andrew cuomo and his health commissioner dr. howard zucker mandating the placement of covid-positive patients into state-regulated nursing homes causing the virus to spread like wildfire.  many believe this executive order led to the deaths of over 15,000 of our most vulnerable citizens., senator tedisco is calling on governor hochul to immediately and publicly release a full and unredacted report of a now four-month overdue $4.3 million “independent” review of covid-19 pandemic policy in new york, including if the cuomo administration bears responsibility for the deaths and subsequent cover-up of over 15,000 people in state-regulated nursing homes., on may 24, 2022, governor hochul announced she had ordered “ a wide-ranging and independent review of the state’s policies during the early phase of the covid-19 pandemic.”   hochul said:.

“History deserves to have a true record of what happened here, and I want an outside look at it…I have to be able to leave future governors what was learned, not just in the health care space and the response dealing with nursing homes, but also decisions that affected our economy, decisions that affected families.”

On November 2, 2022, it was revealed that the Hochul Administration hired an outside firm,  the Olson Group, Ltd, for a $4.3 million contract to perform a year-long study with the review to begin that month.  It’s now March 2024, one week before the 4th anniversary of Cuomo’s pandemic executive order and this report remains elusive.

“this governor’s so-called ‘independent report’ on the pandemic response and nursing home deaths was due over four months ago but we’ve had total radio silence from the hochul administration on its status. where is this report and why hasn’t it been released” said senator jim tedisco., “it’s been four years since cuomo and zucker’s infamous executive order mandating the placement of covid-positive patients into nursing homes that may have resulted in the deaths of 15,000 new yorkers. governor hochul and her one-time partner, governor cuomo, may wish to forget this terrible tragedy ever happened, but the families who were impacted will not let this go quietly into the night until we have justice and nor will i. we need a full understanding of what happened and what can be done to prevent this from reoccurring when a future pandemic strikes,” said senator tedisco., “we remember that every life lost during the pandemic was more than just a statistic, these individuals were someone’s spouse, parent, grandparent and sibling and they deserve to know what happened. we also urgently need this information expeditiously to ensure new york state is better prepared for a future health crisis that could be around any corner. pandemics don’t abide by political timetables,” said senator tedisco., senator tedisco has been an outspoken critic of the previous administration’s  march 25, 2020 executive order mandating the placement of covid-positive patients in nursing homes.  tedisco joined the empire center in successfully suing the cuomo administration to get the real number of nursing home deaths publicly released. , tedisco is the sponsor of bi-partisan legislation for an independent investigation with subpoena power into the nursing home deaths ( s.2419 ) that has the support of families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in what’s become one of the worst disasters in new york state history in terms of loss of life., “governor hochul: have this pandemic report released before next week’s fourth anniversary of that deadly executive order and provide real answers to the families. they are suffering in the dark. shed some light onto what caused this disaster,” said senator tedisco. , related legislation, share this article or press release.
