Located a few miles north of Shreveport, the Walter B. Jacobs Memorial Nature Park is a beautiful preserve in the middle of an oak, pine, and hickory forest.

Built by Edward J. DeBartolo Sr., Harrah’s Louisiana Downs has one of the most prominent horse tracks in the country and about 12,000 square feet of casino space.

Shreveport Convention Center is the second-largest convention center in Louisiana. 10. Betty Virginia Park

Betty Virginia Park , located in the middle of the South Highlands neighborhood in Shreveport, is a local treasure favored by tourists and locals. The park’s name has its own story, as Albert Colwell Steere and Elias Goldstein donated the park to the city in honor of their daughters named Betty and Virginia. The park is a natural outdoor venue for seasonal events like the Pumpkin Shine in October or the Crawfest in March. That’s when the place gets filled with live music and vendors offering exquisite local food. 

The park is relatively small and lies on 23 acres of land. But when you visit the green lawns of this park, you’re likely to find many locals doing yoga, playing soccer, doing yoga, or picnicking. It’s an ideal place to stretch your legs and do some exercise on a 1,5-mile walking trail. There’s also a space for baseball or softball and a playground with two areas for younger and older kids.

11. Party Central Family Fun Center

Shreveport has no better place to have a memorable family day out than the Party Central Family Fun Center . This place has activities that adults, older, and younger kids will appreciate. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can try out The Bungee Trampoline that shoots you out high, or have a small Go-Karts racing with family and friends. If you’re traveling with smaller kids, there are particular areas just for them to enjoy – a toddler play zone, a jungle gym, and a few swings. To fuel yourself, visit the local pizzeria where you’ll find not only pizza but also sandwiches, french fries, corn dogs, and meals designed for the little ones. If you’re in town on a Friday, take advantage of their Family Fridays to get a good deal. The group can enjoy pizza with sodas, admittance to the soft play, miniature golf, and many arcade tokens.

12. Red River National Wildlife Refuge

To connect with nature and explore the great outdoors not far from the city, visit the Red River National Wildlife Refuge . Established in 2001 to restore and preserve plants and animals, it’s a local nature area with many exciting activities. The Refuge Area itself is a continuing project that currently covers about 6,000 acres, as opposed to the primary goal of 50,000 acres. 

Without any spending (as the admission is free), you get to enjoy 6.5 miles of walking trails, marked and dog-friendly. On your way around the park, you can enjoy beautiful views of the Red River and the local Lake Caroline. If you’re into fishing and the season is on, bring a signed permit and enjoy plenty of catfish, crappie, and bass. Be careful not to catch one of the alligators in the lake! There is also a good deal of wildlife viewing and birdwatching . Visitors can occasionally spot migratory birds, dragonflies, raccoons, white-tailed deer, armadillos, and hawks. 

Inside the visitor center, there is an exhibition (a diorama) and a small gift shop. On every first Saturday of the month, the staff also offers a program for kids aged 3-5 called “Nature Tots.” That’s when the youngsters can walk along the trails and learn about nature by looking for clues, playing, and making handicrafts.

13. Shreveport Municipal Auditorium

Did you know that Shreveport has a rich music history ? You can find out all about it when you visit the Shreveport Municipal Auditorium , a historical performance and meeting venue located on Elvis Presley Boulevard. This art-deco style building emerged between 1926 and 1929 and is a memorial to all those who served their country in World War I. In 2008, the place earned the title of the National Historic Landmark. 

The Muni, as the locals call it, was a starting point for many world-famous performers, such as Hank Williams, Neal Young, Johnny Cash, and of course, Elvis Presley. Outside in front of the building, you can take a picture with his and James Burton’s statues. Today it is home to a 3,200-seat auditorium used for all types of events – from concerts to Broadway shows. If you’re planning to participate in an event there, you’re in for a treat as the auditorium has phenomenal acoustics. 14. Duck Pond

For those who are eager to be more active, there are a few walking trails. Although the Duck Pond is not one of the oldest parks in the city, the lake is as old as Shreveport itself. 15. Red River Brewpub

Red River Brewpub is the first local brewery since prohibition and a popular choice of Shreveport’s gastronomic experiences. Located downtown, this former distribution company is now a small craft brewery and a tasting room. With their merch shop, a covered garden patio, and the views of downtown Shreveport, it’s a must-do on every traveler’s list. It’s also family-friendly, so the kids can entertain themselves at ping-pong tables, arcade games, and room to play around. 

The brewery offers three flagship beers, a few small-batch options, and seasonal specials. For those who aren’t much into beer, there are cocktails, wines, and spirits available. 16. Strand Theatre Corporation

Go back in time and enjoy the beautiful atmosphere in the Strand Theatre , an Official State Theatre of Louisiana. Opened in 1925 at the corner of Louisiana Avenue and Crockett Street, it used to be a movie cinema much appreciated in its time. The theater builders called it “ the greatest theatre of the South ” and “the million-dollar theatre.” In 1977, the theatre had to close due to financial hardship. That’s when the Strand Theatre Corporation, a group of interested locals, made an effort and restored it to its original beauty, after which the theatre reopened in 1984.

18. American Rose Center

When in Shreveport, one shouldn’t miss one of its greatest treasures – The Gardens of the American Rose Center . You won’t find a more massive park dedicated to roses in the whole country. This impressive park is 118-large and lets you explore about 20,000 rose bushes of 100 different species in a total of 65 gardens. You can also enjoy some other plants like pine trees, camellias, and azaleas. Visit during the blooming season (April to June or September to October) and enjoy stunning roses, graceful sculptures, pools, and fountains. 

The gardens host many events throughout the year, but the most wonderful atmosphere is during Christmas in Roseland . That’s when the park lights up, and the guests can experience hot chocolate with treats, Santa, a train ride for kids, carolers, and crafts and arts designed by local schoolchildren. 

The gardens are a suitable place to walk, take some memorable pictures, and relax in the natural environment. You can also educate yourself on the American Rose Society’s sustainable growing techniques. 

19. Jubilee Zoo – Petting Zoo & Play Place

The Jubilee Zoo , designed initially for kids, is a fun way to spend a day for adults, too. The park is about 20 acres big and offers multiple intriguing experiences – pony rides, safari hayrides, playgrounds, bouncing houses, and miniature zip lines. Everyone can enjoy the zoo’s picnic area with barbecue grills and concession stands for you to use. 

The animals vary from more exotic, like camels and kangaroos, to more familiar ones, like horses and sheep. You’ll also see (and touch) goats, cows, domestic birds, zebras, and capybaras. The best feature of the park is the contact with the animals . You can milk a goat, pet bunnies, and feed almost all of the animals there. The admission fee includes a small feed cone, but you can buy an extra one.

20. Walter B. Jacobs Memorial Nature Park

The 160-acre Memorial Nature Park is an ideal combination of nature exploration and animal watching . Other than 5 miles of beautiful hiking trails and a breathtaking forest, there are live animal exhibitions both inside and outside. In the park’s visitor and interpretive center, you’ll encounter various reptiles, spiders, turtles, and even baby alligators. There’s also a classroom and a play area for kids. 

Outside you can get to know flying squirrels, deer, and birds of prey like a bald eagle, a falcon, and owls. There’s no admission fee to the park, and you can always turn to a few naturalists on site who are very knowledgeable and will be happy to educate and answer any of your questions.

21. Louisiana State Exhibit Museum

Completed in 1939, Louisiana State Exhibit Museum has been attracting architecture enthusiasts and history fans ever since. Located on the Louisiana State Fairgrounds’ edge, the building is an architectural treasure with marble, granite, and a beautiful two-story fresco designed by Conrad Albrizio. Outside is a lovely courtyard with small gardens and a fountain for you to rest and take in the beauty. 

Inside the museum, there are fascinating exhibits and artifacts of Louisiana history and culture . There are 20 state-of-the-art dioramas about life in Louisiana, all designed by H.B. Wright. You’ll also find lots of historical data about the Native Americans and the Civil War. Those eager to learn more can enjoy a topographical map by sculptor Duncan Ferguson, which depicts the geography of Louisiana’s natural, economic, and political history.

22. Shreveport Farmers’ Market

To get a real feel of Shreveport’s local life, go to check out the Shreveport Farmers’ Market that has been operating for almost 35 years . Every Saturday in the vast pavilion, you’ll see over 100 vendors selling meats, vegetables, fruits, herbs, plants all grown in Shreveport and the surroundings. 

Look around to spot some other local produce such as sweets, hand-made soaps, and even pet treats. The market isn’t just a place to shop, but an actual community spot for people to socialize and enjoy their weekend together. Located in the Festival Plaza in the heart of the city, it’s a perfect spot for a morning cup of coffee and a start of your Shreveport’s adventure. 

23. Shreveport Water Works Museum

Learn about Shreveport’s history and the standard of living 100 years ago in the Shreveport Water Works Museum , located at North Common Street. Opened in 2007, the museum has been home to a historic steam-powered water pumping station dating back to 1887. You can take a guided tour or explore it by yourself and learn about this engineering masterpiece that helped clean and deliver water to Shreveport’s citizens. 

The main feature and one of the most exciting experiences in the museum is the Main Pump Room, with a remarkable display of an active and functioning steam-powered water pumping system. You can also see the boiler room, filtration systems, and the basins. All of the equipment was no longer up-to-date and shut down in 1980. Since then, it’s held the National Historic Landmark and National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark titles.

24. R.W. Norton Art Gallery

When traveling to Shreveport, one can’t miss the R.W. Norton Art Gallery , located on a beautiful 40-acre land in the South Highlands neighborhood. Founded in 1946 and opened to the public 20 years later, it is Shreveport’s largest museum treasured by many art-lovers for a reason. The museum accommodates outstanding American and European art pieces – over 400 paintings, sculptures, artifacts, books, and decorative arts. The highlights are galleries dedicated to Frederic Remington and Charles Russell, but you’ll also see works by Auguste Rodin, Paul Revere, and many Louisiana-raised artists. There’s something for everyone with swords and guns collection and a special section for kids. 

After a delightful art encounter, check out the outside of the museum for another magnificent experience. The area offers beautiful landscaped botanical gardens featuring thousands of azaleas and other plants. The scenic views and an incredible flower aroma are best enjoyed in late March or early April when azaleas are blooming. There are also a few walking trails, about eight sculptures, enchanting waterfalls, and ponds.

What is the best time of the year to visit Shreveport ?

Because of Shreveport ’s location, there is no specific “best time of year” to visit. While July and August can be rather hot and humid, it’s far away from the Gulf of Mexico so you won’t have to worry too much about weather-related events like hurricanes. 12 Best Things to Do in Shreveport, LA

This river port city was born when Captain Shreve decided to tackle the Great Raft, a logjam that extended for hundreds of miles up the Red River in Louisiana and left the nearby areas unreachable. Through extensive labor, Shreve cleared all the logs and debris, and Shreveport was founded in 1836 as an inland port that brought trade into the surrounding area.

The city was originally called Shreve Town, then later renamed Shreveport in 1839. The Great Raft shaped the landscape of Shreveport, creating many of the nearby lakes and channels as the water’s passage was blocked and it was pushed back upstream. Today there are plenty of things to do in Shreveport with fun entertainment, great food, and a unique history for you to explore!

12. Shreveport Municipal Auditorium

Later on, a program called the Louisiana Hayride was set up. Singers came to perform and show off their talent in the auditorium and many went on to become big stars. Famous international singers performed here at the start of their careers, most notably Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Arethra Franklin, and Johnny Cash.

The auditorium hosts lots of local and international bands and performers. If you want to add some rhythm and fun to your holiday, head to the Shreveport Auditorium.

11. Red River Brewing Company

This is the perfect place to sip on a beer and socialize with other friendly travelers and locals during your holiday. The brewery serves handcrafted beers that are made right here in Shreveport. The taproom has a glass-wall that looks into the brewery, so you can watch the brewers hard at work whilst enjoying your beer.

The taproom has a simple design and interior, but its view directly into the brewery is unique and connects visitors directly to the beer making process. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience.

The Red River Brewing Company serves great food and drinks and is a social hub year-round. The company is named after the river that has so significantly shaped Shreveport.

10. Gators and Friends

Gators and Friends is just a short half-hour drive away from Shreveport, an easy day trip from the city. The center combines an amusement park with a wildlife center and has enough activities to keep the whole family busy for the day.

They have around 150 alligators that live in the center’s swampland. Further along, they have a petting zoo that has familiar animals like goats that you can pet, and exotic animals like lemurs that you can watch jumping about.

If you’re looking for an adrenaline kick, you can get in a go-kart and race around their track at high speed or go on their zipline course. At the end of the zipline course you whizz over the alligator swamp; just keep your toes out of reach!

9. American Rose Center

A short 20-minute drive from the city and you’re at the American Rose Center. The elaborate rose gardens were set up and are maintained by the American Rose Society, which creates beautiful rose gardens across the country.

The center is open from April to the end of October, when the flowers are in full bloom. They have roses of every color under the sun, whose sweet scents follow you around the gardens. There are lots of delicate sculptures and water features scattered around the gardens too.

Don’t miss out on a trip to this unique rose garden during your holiday in Shreveport, it’s a fantastic place for a short walk and a picnic on a sunny day. They also have a cute gift shop where you can buy souvenirs to take home.

8. Shreveport Casinos

Shreveport and Bossier City, which are only separated by the Red River, are known for horse racing and gambling. They have lots of casinos scattered around the city, you’re never far away from a game of poker or a slot machine.

Some of Shreveport’s best rated casinos are the Bally’s Hotel and Casino, and Sam’s Town Hotel and Casino that are right by the river. Once you’ve tried them you can cross over the nearby bridge into Bossier City and try your luck there.

If you’re looking to try something a bit different, hop aboard one of Shreveport’s riverboat casinos and gamble your way down the iconic Red River. You’ll have lots of stories, and with any luck a small fortune, to take home with you.

7. Barksdale Global Power Museum

This exceptional aircraft museum is a great day trip for aspiring pilots, curious engineers, and war history enthusiasts. They have lots of important aircrafts, each built with unique features and each with a fascinating history.

In the museum, you can learn about the iconic SR-71 that served in the US Air Force for 24 years. The SR-71 aircraft can fly at speeds of more than 2,100 miles per hour and at altitudes as high as 85,000 feet. It infiltrated extremely hostile environments and provided important intelligence to the US.

Come along and explore World War II aircraft bombers, and planes that infiltrated the Cold War. A fascinating family day out or group activity for friends on holiday.

6. Great Raft Brewing

If you want to try some locally brewed, hand-crafted Louisianan beer, head on over to the Great Raft Brewing company. The brewers here use locally sourced ingredients and take pride in being able to tell you exactly where your beer has come from.

They serve pale and dark ales, fruity sour beers, refreshing lager and much more in their taproom. It’s a great place to do some socializing and have an evening drink. Alternatively, you can stop by for a refreshing beer in between activities, sightseeing can be tiring.

They occasionally run events or play live music, it’s worth popping in to ask what they have going on. Bear in mind they aren’t open every day so you’ll want to check their opening days in advance.

5. Shreveport Water Works Museum

This museum is ideal for enthusiastic engineers, curious historians and people who want to get another National Historic Landmark under their belt. The treatment plant dates back to 1889 and historically provided Shreveport with clean drinking water, using old-fashioned machinery.

The plant still has its old steam-powered water treatment system. These plants were around for decades before new modern treatment systems replaced them. Shreveport’s steam treatment plant didn’t turn off its engines until 1980.

It’s thought it was the last steam-powered water treatment plant to switch off its engines in the US. They suspect that by then every other steam-powered water treatment system had retired long ago. The Water Works Museum is a National Historical and Engineering Landmark, don’t miss out!

4. Louisiana State Exhibit Museum

At this very unique and peculiar museum you can explore local history through dioramas, which are three-dimensional models, big or small, that depict a real-life scene. They also have historical art and ancient artifacts from the region for you to visit.

The museum was built in 1939. The dioramas model the way of life in Shreveport in the 1940s. Throughout the exhibition you’ll watch agricultural methods change, as they moved from human and animal labor to machinery and get an insight into how oil and rice were produced in the region.

They have exhibitions of historical artifacts, like ceramics and jewellery from Poverty Point and Caddo, where Native Americans had settled and started trading. The Caddo Nation is the best documented tribe in Louisiana. An educational day out!

3. Shreveport Aquarium

Is it grey and gloomy outside? Are you struggling to know how to keep the kids busy? Problem solved! Head to the Shreveport Aquarium. They have more than 1000 different creatures for you to ponder.

From cute little seahorses to big and scary sharks and alligators, the aquarium has it all. Watch the kids squeal and giggle at the curious creatures they find. There are over 300 species in the museum, some local to Louisiana and some from halfway across the world.

The museum also runs feeding sessions where you can come and feed the sharks. Watch your fingers, they bite. The whole family will love the aquarium, and it’s a great way to learn about aquatic wildlife.

2. Sci-Port Discovery Center

The museum focuses on STEM subjects and is full to the brim of fascinating exhibits and experiments that teach science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in a fun and accessible way. You can learn and play all at once in the Sci-Port Discovery Center.

One of the most popular spots in the museum is the planetarium. Come along and learn all about the most dazzling stars, the furthest galaxies, and ponder the possibility of extraterrestrial life.

You can also learn about the local fauna and flora, and how the landscape has shaped Shreveport’s wildlife. Their hands-on exhibits put learning in your hands. The museum is great for families with kids of all ages. They have a play area for young toddlers too.

The gallery was born in 1966 when the Norton family started an arts foundation in Shreveport and donated their humbly sized art collection. The pieces of art they collected in their family home became a part of something much bigger and were the first pieces to be displayed when the museum opened.

The museum has grown considerably since then, and now has over 400 pieces in its permanent collection. Some of their most famed pieces are the paintings of Native American tribes by Charles Marion Rusell, who sympathized with the natives and expressed this through his art.

The museum isn’t just an art museum, it is also surrounded by pretty botanical gardens that visitors can stroll through. The Norton Art Gallery is the perfect place to spend a few quiet hours on a sunny afternoon.

It’s been a trek, people. Our cast and crew left Sarasota after 2 months of creating the newly reimagined Ringling Brothers show. We have two full years on the road and our first stop on the tour was in Shreveport/Bossier City. I can’t say I knew much about this part of Louisiana before, but nothing a little research and walking can’t fix. 

Shreveport is known for riverboat casinos and lots of historic landmarks. Though it can give a sleepy town feel, there are still plenty of ways to entertain yourself and/or your family if gambling isn’t your thing. Here are the best things that Shreveport/Bossier City have to offer.

Fun Things to Do in Shreveport

1. shreveport aquarium.

A great place for family fun! The Shreveport Aquarium is filled with exotic varieties of fish, coral, and creatures of the deep. Get up close and personal with one of the touch tanks and see if you can convince a family member to touch a shark or sting ray! Entrance fees are $12.95 for children and $15.95 for teenagers and adults.

2. Sci-Port Discovery Center

Another family fun option. This amazing place is more than just a kid’s science museum, it also has an Imax Dome Theater. The Sci-Port Discovery Center was named one of the top ten science centers in the nation by Parents Magazine. Meaning there will be lots of interactive exhibits to keep the kiddos entertained. General Admission is $10.

3.  R.W. Norton Art Gallery

An impressive art gallery featuring a wide assortment of Western works such as Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell. And if you heard about Shreveport’s Botanical Gardens, this is where you’ll find them. The gardens are definitely worth a visit in the spring when the azaleas are in full bloom. Admission is free but the museum is closed Monday-Wednesday. The gardens are closed on Monday & Tuesday.

4. Shreveport Water Works Museum

Also known as the McNeill pumping station, this place is a National Historic Landmark! Take a gander at industrial equipment from another era. It might just be a water pump but it is fascinating! Plus it doesn’t hurt that admission is free and there’s a small Railroad Museum attached to it. 

5. Great Raft Brewing

What more do you need besides local beers and a tasting room? Plus they do orders to go. And if you’re dying to know how the liquid magic gets made, take a tour and they’ll be happy to tell you! They have trivia nights, vinyl nights, and lots of seasonal beers to keep the good vibes going. And now with their new addition of Dripp Hot chicken, you won’t have to worry about going hungry amidst all the beer tasting. 

6. Asian Gardens of Shreveport

The ASEANA Asian Gardens is a multi-level public space that represents over 10 different Asian countries. It’s a little oasis in the heart of Shreveport filled with statues and greenery that will transport you out of this southern town for a short while. It’s another free experience that Is well worth the trip. 

7. Shreveport Municipal Auditorium

Once home to the radio and later on television country show, Louisiana Hayride, performers such as Johnny Cash used to perform at the Shreveport Municipal Auditorium. Now you can check out the website to see what performances and shows are happening while you’re in town. 

8. Elvis Presley Statue

If you found your way to the Shreveport Municipal Auditorium, there’s a good chance you spotted Elvis already. The statue stands proud and tall in front of the auditorium, commemorating December 15, 1956, when Elvis performed on the Louisiana Hayride.

9. American Rose Center

Just me or did anyone else not know that the headquarters of the American Rose Society is located in Shreveport?? It’s beautiful! It’s 118 acres of multiple varieties of rose flowers, trees, a beautiful reflection pool, and lots of companion plants. Admission is $5 per person or $10 per family.

10. Petting Zoo 

The Jubilee Zoo has announced it is  shutting its doors as of DECEMBER 16th.

11. The Agora Borealis

If you’re looking for an interesting place to shop, this is it. The Agora Borealis is an art marketplace where you can find everything from printed works of art to fancy-smelling soaps. Oh, and there’s food! Win, win, win!

12. A Sanctuary Glass Studio

I wish I had time to try this place but I will next time. Shreveport’s only air-conditioned glass-blowing studio. Try it once or pick up a new weekly hobby. They can teach you how to glass blow in a workshop, organize team-building events, as well as commission special pieces if you’re looking for a statement piece. 

13. 318 Art Co.

If you’re looking for a specific Louisiana gift, this needs to be your go-to place. They have curated a wide assortment of locally made artisanal crafts available for purchase. Check out their website for art and gardening classes as well!

14. On Cloud Wine Winery

Voted as Shreveport, LA’s best winery. It’s a fun option for a girl’s night out, a special evening with your partner, or simply your post-work spot. Their wines are made locally and they have an adorable patio to enjoy the Louisiana sunshine. But don’t worry, if you need some AC, they have a tasting bar inside as well.

This was such an amazing find. My boyfriend and I were craving some cajun food and I couldn’t get gumbo out of my head. I didn’t realize it at the time but there are a few locations. But in my opinion, this location is the best because it’s set right on the bank of Lake Cross.

16. Louisiana State Exhibit Museum

For those of us who need our museum fix, I present the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum. It has quite an extensive collection of Native American artifacts from pre-historic times to the present. As well as beautiful dioramas depicting life in Louisiana from the 1940s. 

17. Shreveport Convention Center

I can attest to this one personally! This is where we had our Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus Premiere Party! The food was awesome, and the drinks were…umm quite strong. It’s a beautiful multi-purpose space that can hold HUGE events.

Best Things to Do in Bossier City

18. red river national wildlife refuge.

A beautiful conservation area where you can enjoy walking trails, fishing, and wildlife viewing. At Red River National Wildlife Refuge, there are about 50,000 acres of exploration to be done! It’s right off of the Red River and if you like bird watching you’ll be happy as a clam here!

19. Former home of country music legend Hank Williams

Though the actual house is no longer standing at this address, music aficionados will still get a kick out of visiting the location of Hank William’s first home. Lots of stories pertain to this area including some of Williams walking the streets of the neighborhood strumming his guitar.

20.  Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau

If you’re looking for a place to help figure out what to do at the junction of these two southern towns, check out the tourist bureau. The staff here are lovely and are willing to answer any questions you might have on the area. It’s also a great resource to check out if you’re interested in learning about any special events that might be happening in the area. 

21. Mardi Gras Museum

I personally love glitz and glamour and was fascinated when I found out there is an entire 10,000-square-foot museum dedicated to all things Mardi Gras. Between the costumes and intricate displays, the museum is an amazing place to host any special event. Known as the Krewe of Gemini Mardi Gras Museum.

22. Bossier City Farmer’s Market

Nothing feels more comforting to me than a local Farmer’s Market. Filled with produce, freshly baked goods, and local businesses; it’s a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. Pay attention to the dates, however, because it’s only open every Saturday from 9am-1pm April-November .

23.  Lake Plain Dealing 

Not the biggest lake around but it’s the least crowded. Plain Dealing Lake is great for jet skiing, fishing, or just a casual swim. Pack a cooler and snag a seat at one of the picnic tables for an easy laid-back afternoon. And if you’re lucky, sometimes on Saturdays you can check out a boat race that’s happening on the water. 

24. Altitude Trampoline Park

You might be traveling with some little ones who have a bit more energy than you. Check out the Altitude Trampoline Park to bounce around for a few hours and practice their flips. Who knows, maybe they’ll eventually be able to join the circus ;).

25. Gamble a dollar or two at the Casinos

Whether you’re into gambling or not I’d still suggest checking out the Goliath casino hotels in Bossier City. The buildings themselves are impressive enough to walk around in. Two of the top-rated casinos include Horseshoe Bossier Casino and Margaritaville Resort Casino. Enjoy the slot machines and maybe win a buck or two!

26.  Liberty Garden

Another option to get out for the day is to check out the Memorial of Liberty Garden. It was made in honor of those who lost their lives on 9/11. In 2015, an 823-pound, 16-foot-tall beam from ground zero was donated to the memorial.

27.  Brookshire Grocery Arena

You have to take a visit to where the Ringling Brothers Circus performed! Besides the circus coming to town and performing at Brookshire Grocery Arena, this beautiful arena hosts a plethora of events and concerts. If there’s anything big coming to Shreveport or Bossier City, this is where you’ll be ending up. 

28. Louisiana Boardwalk Outlets

If you’re wandering between Margaritaville and Horseshoe Casino, you’ll probably accidentally bump into these outlets. They are located right in between the two major casinos. There’s of course, lots of shopping to be done and even more restaurants to enjoy. Check out Rocket Fizz for a huge selection of candy and old-school bottled sodas. 

29. Flying Heart Brewery

I stopped by here a few times and it was just what the doctor ordered. Definitely one of the best places around for a beer. They have a great selection of local brews, freaking amazing pizza, and live music. Their patio is prepped with cornhole and games to entertain any adult or kid who needs to stay put while the rents recharge.

Greater Louisiana Activities

30. barksdale global power museum.

Just outside Bossier City, located on Barksdale Air Force Base (an Active Duty military installation), you can check out this Aviation Museum featuring real-life vintage aircraft. You’ll even be able to see the fastest and highest-flying jet ever!  Guests will need to complete a   Visitor Request Form   to obtain a Barksdale AFB Museum Pass.  Visitors from foreign nations must submit a   Foreign Visitors Request Form   and follow the same instructions that follow.

31. Lake Caddo

This place was such a gem of a find when my boyfriend came to visit. We were even able to do a little bit of canoeing in the bayou with the towering GORGEOUS Cypress trees. There is a $4 entrance fee per person and you can rent a canoe for $10 per canoe. 

32. Lake Cross

Another option for a fun day by the water is Lake Cross. It’s a closer option to Bossier/Shreveport and you can still enjoy fishing, canoeing, swimming, or simply watching the abundance of wildlife. It’s an easy option for a weekend outing for the entire family.

33. New Orleans

If you don’t mind a little 5-hour drive, you can enjoy stepping outside of the Bossier/Shreveport Area and head on down to New Orleans. The city is the perfect place for a fun weekend. Whatever you consider a good time, This place will have it; food, lots of art museums, and other attractions are within a short walk of each other. 15 Best Things to Do in Shreveport (LA)

The city of Shreveport sits along the raging Red River and is the place to come if you are looking for a wild ride and a huge range of things to do. If you like the great outdoors, then there is certainly plenty to experience here, such as parks, zoos, and the largest rose garden in the United States.

If you prefer to stay inside, then there are engaging museums here as well as art galleries, and if you are traveling with a family then you will still find a huge range of things to do including children friendly venues and activities like trampoline parks. In the evenings, Shreveport also comes alive and has a punchy nightlife scene with some excellent southern dining options and live music venues.

Lets explore the best things to do in Shreveport :

1. Call to Action Mural

Sitting conveniently at the intersection of Spring and Crockett Streets you will find the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau.

The bureau is most well known for its colorful and vibrant mural named ‘A Call to Action’ which depicts painted scenes that tell the story of Shreveport.

The mural also features lighting features and it is also used to promote local upcoming events as well as showcasing dining and entertainment options.

2. American Rose Center

Many visitors to Shreveport won’t know that the largest rose park in the United States is actually situated here at the American Rose Center.

The park in which the roses grow spans an impressive 118 acres and has up to 20,000 individual rosebushes on show.

As well as these amazing blooms, you will also find other foliage like sculptures and other architectural features like delightful fountains.

3. Holiday in Dixie

If you happen to be in Shreveport in the spring time, then make sure you don’t miss Holiday in Dixie, which is actually one of the oldest and most historical festivals in the whole of the South.

The festival is meant to mark the beginning of the spring time as well as the significant Louisiana Purchase, a land deal between the United States and France that occurred in 1803. Holiday in Dixie lasts for 10 days and is made up of a carnival as well as a colorful parade.

There are also fun activities like a treasure hunt as well as live music events and family fun in the form of children’s games and contests.

4. Davis Homeplace

The Davis Homeplace dates from 1916 when it was built and has now been lovingly restored to its former glory to offer an amazing insight into how people would have lived in Louisianan in the days of old.

The house is filled with many of the original items that belonged to the Davis family who lived here, and you will still find period curiosities such as oil lamps, transoms, and pocket doors.

You need to call ahead for an appointment and can take a tour of the home with a docent.

5. Betty Virginia Park

The Betty Virginia Park is one of the premium green spaces in Shreveport and cover 23 acres of lush lands in the city.

If you want to spend an afternoon here then you will find scenic picnic areas where you can enjoy a spot of lunch, or there is also a walking trail that skirts around the part if you want to get in some exercise.

Younger visitors will be delighted to find playgrounds in the park as well as softball and baseball diamonds where you might catch an all-American game in full swing.

6. Air U Trampoline Park

The Air U Trampoline Park provides fun for all the family and is the perfect rainy day activity if you are looking for something to do indoors in Shreveport.

The park is made up of an indoor trampoline facility that has fun activities such as foam pits so that you can bounce around and make sure that you do not get injured in the process.

There are open jump sessions where you can come and play to your heart’s content, or you can also participate in fun group activities such as dodge ball games that take place on trampolines.

7. Elvis Presley Statue

Many people may be surprised to see a statue of Elvis Presley in Shreveport, although this is actually a commemorative monument that dates back to the 1950s.

The statue is made of bronze, and you will find it in front of the Shreveport Municipal Auditorium.

The reason for its placement is that Elvis Presley performed as part of the famous Louisiana Hayride in October of 1954, and the statue was erected so that this act is never forgotten.

8. Eldorado Resort Casino Shreveport

The Eldorado Resort Casino Shreveport is certainly an experience if you fancy testing Lady Luck while you are in town.

The casino aims to offer visitors a premium gaming facility and you will find a 30,000 square foot gaming floor here.

There are more than 50 table games here, or if you prefer you can have a go on one of the 1,500 slot and video poker machines.

There are also dining and other entertainment options throughout the casino such as live shows.

9. Statue of Ledbetter

If you are in Texas Street in the downtown area of Shreveport, then swing by the statue of Huddie Ledbetter who was also known as Lead Belly.

Huddie Ledbetter was originally from Mooringsport in Louisiana and was known as one of the most talented musicians to come from the area.

Instruments that he played included the guitar, mandolin, piano, and accordion, and his music is said to have had a huge impact on a variety of musicians in the modern day.

As such, make sure you don’t miss this monument to one of the most famous musicians to have come out of Louisiana.

10. J. Bennett Johnston Waterway Regional Visitor Center

The J. Bennett Johnston Waterway Regional Visitor Center is dedicated to telling the story of the Red River in Louisiana and will take you on a journey from the past up until the modern day.

The center aims to educate on how the river was transformed in the days of old so that it could be safely navigated and used for recreation purposes, and at the center you will find over 8,000 square feet of exhibit space that includes a theater and static and rotating exhibits.

You can also take a guided tour of the center with one of the knowledgeable docents on site.

11. Holy Trinity Catholic Church

Holy Trinity Catholic Church is famous in Shreveport as it has the claim to fame of being the oldest church in the city.

The church is designed and built in the Romanesque style and it has a signature alter that is made entirely of Italian marble.

As such, the church is said to be reminiscent of a European cathedral rather than a church in the south of the United States, and it is also known for its pretty stained glass.

There are over 60 window panes here that are covered in beautiful stained glass motifs and the church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Shreveport.

12. Barksdale Global Power Museum

Barksdale Global Power Museum is part of Barksdale Air Force Base and has the simple premise of preserving the history of those who have served in the Air Force.

To that end, visitors here will find a range of exhibits that tell the story of the heritage of the Air Force, and you will find aircraft on display as well as a range of period memorabilia.

There is even some antique Air Force artwork on show here as well as a gift shop where you can stock up on souvenirs.

13. Jubilee Zoo

If you love animals or you are travelling with younger visitors, then the Jubilee Zoo makes a fantastic day out in Shreveport.

The zoo has a petting zoo where you can feed some of the animals, and many of the exhibits here are interactive so that you can get up close to the wildlife here.

There are carousel pony rides, and you can also get around the zoo on a safari ride that will let you take in all the action in comfort.

When you have toured the zoo, you can also enjoy inflatable items such as a bouncy castle, and there is also a playground for children.

14. Logan Mansion

For a slice of spooky Shreveport, head to the Logan Mansion that dates back to 1897. The house is built in the classic Victorian style, and is said to be haunted.

As such, you can go on a tour here with a friendly and knowledgeable local guide who will take you around the home and tell you of all the ghost stories that exist here.

There are special holiday tours that you can join as well, particularly around Halloween and Christmas, so if you like feeling scared then this is one place not to miss.

15. Louisiana State Exhibit Museum

The Louisiana State Exhibit Museum first opened in 1939 and is known for its exhibits about the Caddo Indians who lived in the area.

These include displays of local antique artifacts, frescos, and even a historical dugout canoe.

The museum also has over 20 different dioramas that tell the story of the state of Louisiana.

The building itself is also known as an architectural jewel in the crown of Shreveport as it built in the shape of a circle in a modern style that shocked residents when it was constructed in the 1930s.

Even the name Louisiana evokes a feeling of sultry summer nights with cicadas chirping nearby, and the laughter of friends and family over a table groaning with tasty Southern fare. This a state where time slows down, and life is more about living than doing.

One of the best places to visit Louisiana's tourist attractions and soak up a bit of Creole culture is in New Orleans . The French Quarter celebrates the state's history and is a great place to get lost knowing that no matter where you turn, a great meal and a good time is waiting. World-famous Mardi Gras brings out the fun in people as they dress up and parade through the streets.

Just down the road is the state capital of Baton Rouge . State capitals can sometimes be stuffy places, but not Baton Rouge. This city casts that reputation aside and proudly celebrates all that it has to offer, including a capitol building with a resident ghost named Sarah.

Outdoor-minded travelers will want to stop in at Lake Charles and soak up the natural beauty and perhaps stop at one of the state's best beaches.

After you've given the cities their due, head out of town. Visit the bayous and swamplands with their ghostly silent waters inhabited by things that may like to eat you. Less adventurous visitors may find a tour through a plantation more to their liking.

The French Quarter is New Orleans' oldest and most famous neighborhood. Its beautiful buildings date back as far as 300 years, many with wrought iron balconies that extend over the tourist-filled sidewalks below. Visitors flock to the French Quarter for sightseeing, shopping, dining, and entertainment, and the area is packed during the annual Mardis Gras celebrations.

The most popular place to visit in the French Quarter is Bourbon Street , which is alive year-round with throngs of tourists and live music. North Rampart Street is less crowded but has many historic buildings and good restaurants, while Decatur Street is a popular hangout for hipsters. The National WWII Museum in New Orleans offers an in-depth look at every aspect of the conflict, from the ground war in Europe to the challenges of battle at sea and in the air. One of the most impactful exhibits is "Road to Berlin," where visitors have the opportunity to be immersed in the past while seeing fully recreated battle zones complete with the sights and sounds.

Other exhibits include an exploration of the obstacles overcome by the Seabees and Merchant Marines in supporting the troops, a look at how vital support from the home front was to the effort, and details about the D-Day invasion of Normandy.

The museum's displays employ a variety of media and interactive technology that bring history to life. Exhibits are also full of personal stories and photos, as well as a large collection of artifacts, including soldiers' personal items and even a shark-faced P-40 Warhawk.

The museum added a new attraction in November 2022 titled Expressions of America. Taking place most evenings on the Col. Battle Barksdale Parade Ground, this immersive sound and light show is designed to take you back to the war years of the early 1940s.

The show starts in the BB's Stage Door Canteen, where live performances take place. Eventually the show moves outdoors for the main show. Expressions of America is a separate attraction from the regular admission to the museum and an additional fee is charged.

The biggest event on Louisiana's annual calendar is the Mardi Gras celebration that takes place in New Orleans. This colorful event is a huge undertaking with a parade, balls, and street celebrations like none other. Mardis Gras is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, but celebrations begin on the weekend leading up to Tuesday.

The event draws huge crowds who come to join in the celebrations and watch more than 1,000 floats go by on dozens of parade routes. To see the floats up close, tourists can visit Mardis Gras World , where you can watch artists and craftsmen build them. Nearly half of the celebration's floats, costumes, and props are created in this workshop.

If you're coming for Mardi Gras, plan ahead. Check the events calendar and be sure to book a hotel well in advance.

The Melrose Plantation in Natchitoches was first known as Yucca Plantation when it belonged to Marie Thérèse and Claude Thomas Pierre Metoyer, freed slaves. Yucca House, found on the grounds, was built in the 1790s. The Big House is a West Indies Creole plantation house with early Greek Revival details.

At the turn of the century, Melrose became the home of John Hampton Henry and his wife Camie, a patron of the arts. Mrs Henry enlarged the garden and preserved the buildings. Many writers and artists were guests at Melrose over the years.

The Gothic-Revival-style Old State Capitol makes a dramatic impression on visitors passing by and is equally impressive on the inside. Two huge towers flank the main entrance, and the roof is crenellated. The building, which resembles an old castle, is set on a hill overlooking the Mississippi River in downtown Baton Rouge.

This historic landmark building now houses a political history museum , which includes artifacts, documents, and interactive exhibits that explore the state's long history.

Visitors can also learn about the building's history and significance in the "Ghost of the Castle" presentation, a 4 -D experience that is hosted by the apparition of Sarah Morgan.

If you've toured the Old State Capitol Building, it's definitely worthwhile touring the current State Capitol Building . Located just under a mile north, this incredible example of Art Deco architecture is, at 460 feet tall, the tallest state capitol in the United States .

Take the elevator up 350 feet to the 27th floor, where you'll find the Observation Deck. It's from this elevated perch that you'll be able to appreciate how flat and wet Louisiana truly is. For a more detailed understanding of the building, consider booking a guided tour. Admission is free.

Louisiana is famous for its bayous and swamps, and fortunately you don't need to venture far from New Orleans to get into the beating heart of bayou country. In this unique environment, you'll see moss-covered trees; extensive swamplands; and an assortment of wildlife, including alligators, wild boar, wading birds, and snakes .

Tours are easily arranged. Some tours also stop at a Cajun Village, accessible only by water, where you can learn about their unique culture.

The Laura Plantation in Vacherie has been open to the public since 1994, allowing visitors to tour the 1805 building and property that was a sugarcane plantation for 180 years. The home contains original period furniture, as well as exhibits highlighting the memoirs of Laura Locoul.

The most remarkable feature of the plantation, however, is its large exhibit dedicated to the lives and personal stories of those who were enslaved on the farm. The exhibit explores the complex relationships between the owners and the slaves, as well as various aspects of daily life, form health to religion.

Collections include rare photos and documents that shed light on all-but-forgotten African-Americans who lived and worked on this Creole farm, as well as other slaves in the state. Tours run every 40 minutes all day long, beginning at 10am.

Vermilionville, in Lafayette, exhibits the traditions and heritage of the Acadian settlers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. At this living history museum, costumed craftspeople and historians demonstrate skills and folk crafts that have been preserved and handed down from previous generations.

Artisans can be found throughout the 23-acre site, which is home to restored original Acadian homes and authentic buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. The property also includes exhibits that are featured on a rotating basis and explore the lives of Louisiana's indigenous peoples.

The struggle to maintain the Acadian culture and language, and a look at black history from early slavery to the civil rights movement are also topics that are covered. Other exhibits include a fascinating look at the differences in Mardi Gras traditions in cities versus rural areas.

Count on an hour and a half to fully explore this interesting site . Note that the museum is closed on Mondays, and the last admission throughout the week is at 3pm.

Louisiana has a surprisingly good selection of beaches, and with the state's reputation as a steamy, hot place in the summer, you may be making a beeline for one in short order.

One of the best places to visit the beach in Louisiana is Holly Beach , colloquially referred to as the "Cajun Riviera." Located in the southwest corner of the state, the beach here is long, flat, and wide with golden sands. The Gulf of Mexico waters get delightfully warm in the summer, and the shallow water is ideal for children.

Just a couple of hours south of New Orleans is another popular beach destination, Grand Isle . This barrier island extends into the Gulf of Mexico, and the beach here stretches for almost the entire length. Unfortunately, the Grand Isle State Park received significant damage from Hurricane Ida and has not reopened. However, the damage to the beaches in the town of Grand Isle have been repaired and are fully open.

At the far end of Grand Isle is Port Fourchon. The beach here is a bit different, with larger waves popular with surfers.

Even closer to New Orleans is Lake Ponchartrain and Fontainbleau State Park . This beach has flat, shallow water and a wonderful sandy shoreline. Off the beach is a water playground for the kids, showers, picnic tables, and restrooms. Hurricane Ida caused significant damage to the park, but it has since reopened fully, the only exception being the camping cabins, which remain closed until further notice.

Sci-Port Discovery Center is a science and entertainment center featuring science, math, and space exhibits; an IMAX Dome Theatre; and the Sawyer SPACE DOME Planetarium. Located in Shreveport, the center is targeted mainly towards youth, and is a popular family attraction with a strong educational component, featuring hundreds of interactive exhibits.

The center's newest addition is the Power of Play Children's Museum, which encourages children to learn through hands-on play.

Visitors can climb aboard a decommissioned destroyer at the USS Kidd and Veterans Memorial , located in Baton Rouge. The ship was active during WWII and has since been used in films and TV productions.

Information on the ship, as well as nautical items and memorabilia, are on display in the museum. The USS Kidd is named for Rear Admiral Isaac Campbell Kidd, Sr., who was killed during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

In addition to the ship, the memorial also has an observation tower and a museum . Inside the museum are historical artifacts and a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. Children and adults alike will be fascinated by the model ship collection.

The Rosedown Plantation is a State Historic Site known for being one of the most well preserved domestic Southern plantations. It offers a look at the lifestyles, both of plantation owners and slaves, during the mid 19th century in the South.

On the grounds are camellias, azaleas, and rare shrubs and trees. The Rosedown Gardens were created by the owners, Daniel and Martha Turnbull, in 1835. These incredible gardens span 28 acres and are one of the finest in the entire state.

The Turnbull family occupied the mansion for more than 120 years.

St. Martin Catholic Church was established in 1765 in St. Martinville. The present structure was built in 1836 and has an 1883 replica of the Grotto of Lourdes. In the left wing of the church is the grave of Emmeline Labiche, thought to be the heroine of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem Evangeline . A statue of Evangeline stands in the churchyard.

Of note is a beautiful statue of Saint Martin de Tours dating from 1931. The St. Martin Catholic Church is the third oldest church in Louisiana.

The DeQuincy Railroad is located in the old Kansas City Southern Depot, which was built in 1923. This grand old building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places , now contains a variety of railroad equipment and related memorabilia.

Exhibits also include an impressive collection of museum quality Gauge 1 model steam and diesel engines created by master model craftsmen. Outside, visitors can admire the museum's 1913 steam locomotive and a 1947 Pullman passenger coach, as well as two cabooses.

This is also a great spot for train lovers to simply relax and watch the trains go by from the train-watching platform or any of the several viewing areas.
