Cruise Overview

Antarctica cruise - in-depth antarctica, falkland islands & south georgia expedition.

Discover the incredible wildlife and beautiful wilderness landscapes of the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica

See a wide variety of iconic wildlife across the three distinct habitats, including nesting penguins, fur seals and whales

Be immersed in diverse landscapes, from the lush green hills of the Falklands and the alpine landscapes of South Georgia, to the iceberg-studded seas of Antarctica.

An Antarctic expedition

We’ll set sail from Chile to explore the unique world of South Georgia and Antarctica. Every day, our route will be guided by nature as we make the best of local conditions. Each sunrise will offer something different and thrilling. In October and November on the seventh continent, penguins start courting and nesting. In December and January, the summer conditions bring longer, milder days, and in February and March, whales and penguin chicks abound.

Wild islands of adventure

The Falkland Islands are windswept and beautiful, and they’re home to a wide variety of wildlife. Additionally, South Georgia has colonies of penguins and seals, and it is designated an Important Bird Area. It’s a place of spectacular mountainous landscapes, fur seal colonies, and ghostly, abandoned whaling stations. The weather sets the agenda on these rugged islands, so in true expedition style, we’ll adapt to the conditions and have a truly unforgettable adventure.

Charming island life

Enjoy birding and hiking on these green islands

The Falkland archipelago is filled with seamless horizons and white sand beaches teeming with birdlife. Only the occasional farm dots the landscape. Here, you’ll find grassy hills and wildflowers in contrast to the vast whiteness that’s to come in Antarctica.

You can also enjoy a community walk of Stanley, taking in the Jubilee Villas gardens, Christ Church Cathedral, and the Historic Dockyard Museum.

Our landings, hikes, and excursions are – as always – subject to weather conditions. We hope to visit albatross and penguin colonies, where seals can often be found as well, and to get as close as possible without disturbing them.

Adventure lies ahead

Cruising the South Atlantic

After the Falkland Islands, we will spend two days cruising toward beautiful South Georgia. Look forward to seeing an archipelago filled with diverse wildlife.

The Expedition Team will prepare you for what lies ahead. They will tell you everything they know about South Georgia, including information about the area’s wildlife, polar history, geology, glaciology, and stories of Norwegian whalers.

You’ll also learn how to make your visit as safe and low impact as possible. You can join our Citizen Science programs to help collect data for global research projects.

The ‘Serengeti of the Southern Ocean’

Visit a wildlife watcher’s paradise

South Georgia’s abundant wildlife has earned it the nickname ‘Serengeti of the Southern Ocean’. Its unique position, free from sea ice, makes the island an ideal breeding site for large colonies of penguins, other seabirds, and seals. In fact, it is listed as an Important Bird Area, home to albatrosses, petrels, shags, skuas, and terns.

You’ll spend four days exploring this remarkable area. We’ll also try to reach Grytviken, the final resting place of Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. We’re always guided by nature and we adapt to daily conditions to bring you the best possible experience.

While our itineraries are always flexible, they’re even more so during peak breeding seasons, when the wildlife is most vulnerable to disturbance. When it’s safe to do so, we’ll watch for wildlife. When our presence could disturb the animals, we’ll choose another place to visit. As always, these decisions are made by your Expedition Team and are based on lifetimes of combined experience in these destinations. Sometimes we’ll land and sometimes we’ll cruise – it’s all part of the adventure!

A world of ice and wonder

Experience Antarctica in all its majesty

Nothing prepares you for your first sight of Antarctica’s immense, frozen beauty. Icebergs, sculpted by nature, float in the straits. Gentoo, chinstrap, and Adélie penguins watch from the shores. Countless seabirds wheel overhead. Nature is in charge.

During the next five days, you’ll explore several possible landing sites on and around the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands. It doesn’t matter where we go or what we do, every day will be thrilling and unlike anything you’ve experienced before.

We might sail into a flooded volcanic caldera or land in icy bays where remnants of whaling paraphernalia lie abandoned. You may also have the chance to kayak among icebergs and seals or snowshoe to a stunning viewpoint.

Bird enthusiasts should look skyward for Antarctic seabirds such as skuas, petrels, and terns. Through onboard lectures and onshore talks, you’ll learn more about this precious habitat and discover how we can all protect it for the future.

Land ahead!

As we say goodbye to the frozen continent, MS Fram turns to take you north through the Drake Passage and toward Punta Arenas.

This is the perfect time to go through your pictures and relive your experiences in the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and Antarctica. Enjoy the onboard comforts. Relax in the hot tubs or the panoramic sauna or unwind in our Explorer Lounge & Bar.

With the Drake Passage behind us, we will enter the scenic Beagle Channel, surrounded by mountains plunging straight into the icy water. Watch for Patagonian wildlife as we sail through this wild and remote area.

Landing Sites in Antarctica

An endless white wilderness, Antarctica is nature at its most sublime. Read more about some of the possible landing sites you could explore on a sailing to Antarctica with Hurtigruten.

During our expeditions to Antarctica , you will learn of the great explorers who paved the way into these southern oceans, gazing out across landscapes that have remained as awe-inspiring and unchanged as the day that man first set eyes upon them.

Hurtigruten's expedition ships take you as close as possible to Antarctic wildlife and untouched wilderness. Each of these vessels offer a fascinating and varied schedule of  landings, all designed to create unforgettable memories.  MS Fram hosts only 200 guests, our new hybrid electric-powered ships, MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen , each carry 500 guests. This relatively small passenger size allows Hurtigruten expedition ships to make landings in some of the most spectacular regions of Antarctica and the Antarctic peninsula, following IAATO regulations.

How Does Hurtigruten Land in Antarctica?

Completing successful landings requires experience—at Hurtigruten, we have 125 years of it, and take pride in offering seamless landings to all of our guests. From our tender pit—a small pier folded out on the side of the ship—you will board small rubber boats that hold up to 20 people, that take you ashore. Before you land, we make sure to follow a few simple principles so every landing runs smoothly:

Guests are divided into boat groups of approximately 40 guests . To make it easier for guests to remember their group, we name them after animals in Antarctica, like albatross, krill, or penguin species.

Groups are called by name over the ship's speakers to avoid lines . All guests receive a patch with the animal of their group for their Explorer jacket before the very first landing.

Groups are put together by the Expedition Coordinator by language. Friends and family also stay together.

All guests can eat whenever they want, either before or after their outdoor activity. We put expeditions first, and fit your meals around landings , which is what our guests really love.

Once ashore, you will be greeted by an Expedition Team Member at the landing site, offering a helping hand to ease your disembarkation from the explorer boat. Information about the landing site is provided, with tips on where to go and where to see animals. All guests are able to explore the area on their own, with team members nearby to answer any questions or provide information. Special hikes and other excursions are always guided by experienced lecturers and team members.

Weather, wind, ice, and local conditions will determine the exact nature of your program and schedule. Safety is paramount and the ship’s captain will decide the final sailing itinerary during the voyage, making each expedition unique.

Below, you will find a selection of some of the possible landing sites in Antarctica:

Deception Island, South Shetland Islands

One of the highlights of the South Shetlands, Deception Island is a distinctive ring-shaped volcanic caldera, a portion of which has collapsed and created a navigable opening into the flooded interior. The natural harbor within includes Whalers Bay, home to an abandoned whaling station known as Hektor, as well as a derelict British base.

Half Moon Island, South Shetland Islands

Staggeringly photogenic and blessed with some of the most spectacular Antarctic scenery imaginable, Half Moon Island is a glittering gem amongst these island treasures. Its serrated and creviced cliffs are home to a large colony of chinstrap penguins, as well as Antarctic terns, kelp gulls, snowy sheathbills, Wilson’s storm petrels, and several species of seals who are regular visitors to the island.

Yankee Harbor, South Shetland Islands

Early sealers in the area used Yankee Harbor on Greenwich Island as a frequent base of operations, its remarkable setting providing a natural safe haven for the sailors. Remnants of those early days can still be seen littering the shoreline, but the big draw for visitors here is the large colony of gentoo penguins, whose numbers are estimated to be around 4,000 breeding pairs.

Cuverville Island

Situated in the scenic Errera Channel, Cuverville Island boasts the largest known colony of gentoo penguins. The narrow Errera Channel offers a spectacular passage to and from Cuverville as icebergs become trapped and grounded in the nearby shallows. Watching from the observation decks, as our navigators weave the ship carefully between the icebergs, is as exciting as being surrounded by the throngs of nesting penguins onshore.

Neko Harbor

Neko Harbor, home to another gentoo penguin colony, lies nestled in Andvord Bay, surrounded by the mountains and high glacier walls of the peninsula. Named after a factory whaling ship from the early 1900s, Neko is one of the rare places in this area where you may land on the Antarctic mainland.

Paradise Bay

The harbor is paradise not only in name, but in splendor and scenery, as well. Protected from the winds of the nearby Gerlache Strait, Paradise Harbor offers another rare opportunity for a mainland landing and some of the finest vistas the Peninsula has to offer. Here, you can find the Argentine base Almirante Brown and the Chilean base Gonzalez Videla, as well as colonies of neighboring penguins.

Lemaire Channel

This nearly 7-mile long and 1-mile wide channel is one of the most beautiful passages in Antarctica. It bestows upon the traveler a glimpse into what fascinates us most about this incredibly contrasting environment; it is sublime yet imposing, delicate yet daunting, alluring yet inhospitable.

Petermann Island

Its location in the picturesque Penola Strait makes Petermann Island a great spot for iceberg- and whale-spotting, and offers spectacular views across the channel to the Antarctic Peninsula.

Port Lockroy

The British base of Port Lockroy on Goudier Island was built in 1941 and abandoned in 1962. It lay empty until 1996 when it was refurbished as a museum by the Antarctic Heritage Trust. It has since become one of the most popular sites in Antarctica and offers a unique peek into life on an Antarctic base in the 1950s.

Wilhelmina Bay

The mountains and high glaciers around Wilhelmina Bay ensure plenty of dramatic scenery, from tiny floating bergy bits to large icebergs. The bay is a prime feeding ground for whales and seals, and has been nicknamed "Whale-mina Bay," due to the large number of mammals frequently seen.

Antarctic Sound

The huge ice shelves of the Antarctic continent give birth to mile-long tabular icebergs. The strong currents of the Weddell Sea conspire to bring these massive flat-topped bergs north into the Antarctic Sound, at the northeastern end of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Brown Bluff

Brown Bluff lies on the coast of the Antarctic Sound at the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. As the name suggests, the landscape is dominated by an ominous, nearly half-mile high cliff. The towering, rust-colored bluff is volcanic in origin and the beach is peppered with lava “bombs.” Adélie penguins, gentoo penguins, kelp gulls, and cape petrels can be found breeding here, and Weddell seals are also regular visitors.

What the trip is like.

The trip is rated Level 1+, Easy , according to our trip grading system. You need to be able to walk on uneven surfaces and feel comfortable on your feet for multiple hours a day. You must be able to complete on board safety drills and emergency evacuation procedures without the assistance of others.

The Antarctic summer begins in November and ends in March—no tourist ships visit in the winter. December through February are the best times to visit as they bring long daylight hours and milder temperatures. You'll experience a variety of weather conditions including rain, snow, sleet, and sunny skies no matter when you visit. Temperatures can change quickly and range from the high 30s to below freezing, sometimes with a significant wind chill.

Having the right clothing and gear is vital to the enjoyment of your trip to Antarctica, layered breathable clothing is best with a fully waterproof jacket and waterproof over-pants (required).  Note that ponchos are NOT recommended as wind makes them less useful. A polar jacket is included on most voyages; waterproof boots are available to borrow on all cruises.

Visit wildernesstravel.newheadings.com  to begin shopping. Be sure to check out our Get Ready Packages, which features 3 Polar Packages that provide excellent value for the gear necessary to keep you warm and dry. Polar gear is available to rent or buy and it may be possible that rental gear can be delivered to your hotel in South America prior to your cruise.

Medical Attention and Evacuation in Remote Destinations

Antarctica is an extremely remote and isolated region of the world. In the case of serious illness or injury, medical attention and swift evacuation are not always available. Once you sail from Ushuaia, you are far away from towns and medical facilities. In the case of serious illness or injury, the cruise ship will make every effort to reach medical facilities as soon as possible, but be aware that it may take several days to get you to a hospital. If you have health or medical issues of concern, please discuss them with your physician before considering this trip.

Due to the remoteness, emergency evacuation insurance is required for all voyages to Antarctica.

When is the best time to visit Antarctica, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands?

October, November, Early December (late spring - early summer) The pack ice begins to break up, creating new landscapes of sculpted ice and pristine icebergs with plenty of fresh snow. It's mating season for the penguins and other birds with whole colonies in spectacular displays of courtship rituals. You're also likely to witness nest building and egg tending. Adélie, Chinstrap and Gentoo penguins and other seabirds return to their breeding sites.

Elephant seals and fur seals are mating, and King Penguins are laying their eggs on South Georgia. Parents can be seen "carrying" eggs on their feet so that one parent can shuffle around the colony while the other adult goes out to sea to feed. Antarctica is never crowded, but in the early season there are far fewer ships and the vastness and purity of the region is even more pronounced. Spring wildflowers are also blooming on the Falklands and South Georgia Islands.

Mid December - January (full summer) These are usually Antarctica's warmest months-the height of the Austral Summer when the sun is up 18 to 20 hours a day. Longer days create great light conditions for fabulous photo opportunities. Wildlife in full swing as temperatures warm and activity levels rise. Penguin chicks are hatching, and you'll likely see them chasing after any adult penguin that is carrying food. Whale sightings of baleen and toothed whales along the Antarctic Peninsula increase and seal pups can be sighted on the beaches. Some 30 days after hatching, penguin chicks can be found in "crèches," resembling a nursery of sorts, which leaves both of their tired and hungry parents free to rest and hunt for food.

February - March (late summer) Whale sightings are at their peak. Fur seals are increasingly common along the Peninsula and offshore islands; young fur seals are also quite playful in South Georgia. Penguin colonies are very active as the penguin chicks begin to fledge, losing their fuzzy down and developing their adult plumage. By now, Falklands' chicks are leaving the nest - parents have abandoned any remaining chicks, and have gone out to sea to feed and fatten up for their own molting stage.

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Tour Overview

Join us on our Antarctica, South Georgia & Falklands cruise, as we explore the some of the routes and landings of Shackleton’s epic adventure. From the tip of Tierra del Fuego, to the Falkland Islands, the South Orkneys, South Georgia, and the Antarctic continent, this is a trip like no other.

We’ll revisit portions of Shackleton’s South Georgia Island trek, and pay our respects at his grave in Grytviken. Wildlife on these islands is almost beyond belief. We’ll encounter albatross, elephant, fur and leopard seals, whales galore, and literally millions of penguins.

For the truly adventurous traveller, Antarctica is the ultimate destination. In October and November, the pack ice begins to break up, and the landscape is pristine with plenty of fresh snow. It’s mating season for the penguins and other birds. Adélie, Chinstrap and Gentoo penguins and other seabirds return to their breeding sites. You’re likely to witness courtship displays, nest building and egg tending.

In South Georgia, elephant seals and fur seals are mating, and king penguins are laying their eggs. Parents can be seen “carrying” eggs on their feet so that one parent can shuffle around the colony while the other adult goes out to sea to feed. Join us for this once-in-a-lifetime journey to the great southern continent!

Day 1: Arrival

No need to stress about missed connections or flight delays as you arrive with plenty of time to unwind and enjoy all that the luxurious Arakur Resort & Spa has to offer, or head out and discover the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia.

Day 2: Ushuaia

Explore the sights of Ushuaia such as the museums and Argentinean leather markets or relax in style and comfort at the hotel. Attend the optional evening briefing for the opportunity to ask questions and meet some of your fellow explorers.

Day 3: Embarkation

After a final morning exploring Ushuaia or unwinding at the resort, our mid-afternoon transfer will take you to the beautiful MS Seaventure. Our Expedition Team and ship staff will greet you on board, followed by a safety and orientation briefing and Captain’s welcome dinner. You’re on your way to Antarctica!

Day 4: Southern Ocean

As we sail south, important briefings on environmental regulations and expedition safety are held, and you won’t want to miss our experts as they begin their informative and entertaining talks about the wildlife, history, and geology of the area.

Day 5, West Falklands/Malvinas

The westernmost settled outposts in the Falklands are remote farms that have been family-owned for six and seven generations. We’ll be exploring some of these outposts in the Falklands/Malvinas, where you can take in the beautiful countryside and look for Black-Browed albatross or Rockhopper, King, and Magellanic penguin rookeries.

Day 6: Stanley, East Falkland

Chosen for its sheltered harbor and access to abundant fresh water and peat for fuel, Stanley is easy to discover on foot as most shops and services are centered on the port. The museum, the post-office featuring first day covers, plenty of shops with locally made wool items, and Stanley’s lively pubs will all be available. It is possible to experience the wildlife of the Falklands from the town including sea lions and Peale’s and Commerson’s dolphins in the harbor or bird life in nearby Gypsy Cove.

Day 7-8: Southern Ocean

Things really start to ramp up with plenty of wildlife identifying to do as we make our way east across the Antarctic Convergence and officially enter Antarctic waters. Shipboard presentations continue, featuring topics such as the captivating history and abundant wildlife of South Georgia.

Day 9-12: South Georgia

South Georgia is often referred to as the ‘Serengeti of the Southern Ocean’ and it’s easy to see why as you take in tens of millions of breeding penguins, seals, and seabirds. Magnificent mountain scenery, glaciers galore, icebergs, a rich historical tapestry, and an incredible array of wildlife will astound you as we travel down South Georgia's leeward coast. We’ll also visit historic Grytviken whaling station, featuring the tiny graveyard where the great Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton is buried.

Day 13-14, Scotia Sea

Heading farther south, we’ll continue our informative presentations and wildlife spotting as the icebergs become bigger and more plentiful.

Day 15-18: Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands

In the waterways of the Antarctic Peninsula, we hope to make as much time as possible to explore by inflatable Zodiac boats and marvel up close at nature’s glory. Our Expedition Leader and Captain will create a flexible itinerary based on weather, ice, and opportunity. We will aim for the most scenic bays and channels of the Peninsula with stops at penguin rookeries, seal wallows, bird colonies and whale feeding areas, as well as sites of historic and scientific interest.

Adelie, Chinstrap and Gentoo Penguins abound, and Weddell, Crabeater and Elephant Seals are often found hauled out to rest along with predatory Leopard Seals and the assertive Antarctic Fur Seal. Minke and Humpback Whales are frequent visitors in the late season and Orca sightings are also common.

Day 19-20: Drake Passage

Time to leave this magical place inspired, exhausted, and most likely changed forever. We make our way north, once again crossing the legendary Drake Passage. We’ll have one last hurrah as we celebrate the conclusion of our expedition with a special slideshow and photography awards ceremony, then a final meal together

Day 21: Ushuaia, Disembarkation

With huge smiles on weary, content faces, and perhaps some new friends for life, we disembark in the morning, letting you catch a flight to Buenos Aires or stay in Ushuaia for more sights and adventure.

What to Expect

Our Antarctica, South Georgia & Falklands cruise program allow you to experience the best of the natural world, while enjoying the comforts of our friendly floating hotel. The ship generally makes crossing between islands at night, so every morning you awake to new vistas and discoveries. Every day we offer a combination of interesting shore excursions and fun shipboard activities. You can choose which elements of the program you want to participate in.

Our excursions onshore will involve a relatively low level of exertion, but you will need a reasonable level of mobility to get up and down the gangway and climb into and out of Zodiacs (with assistance). Some of our shore landings will be ‘wet’, requiring waterproof boots. Once you have left the zodiac, you’ll find our shore excursions accommodate both those who wish to enjoy a gentle stroll and those who prefer more active hikes. Our onboard specialists will join us on these shore excursions to provide interpretation and narration to these wonderful landscapes and experiences.

Each evening we will gather in the lounge to recount the day’s events and share memorable stories. Our expedition leader will outline the following day’s schedule. Our resource staff of naturalists, historians, and other guest speakers will give informative talks at various times throughout the voyage.

Meals in the ship’s dining room are a great opportunity to meet new friends and recount the day’s adventures. Special diets can be accommodated with advance notice. Safety is also a top priority with Eagle-Eye Tours – our team has extensive experience in the field, and all of our Voyages are run in conjunction with operators with the highest safety standards.

When the ship is underway, it is a wonderful time to join a naturalist on deck, take photos of the stunning scenery, or get caught up on some reading in the library.

We know that everyone travels for different reasons. Over the years, however, we have found one common element among the guest who choose to travel with us – a thirst of knowledge and authentic experience. Knowing this drives us to ensure the highest quality learning experience on our trips, by taking time to carefully design each trip we offer.

Ship & Deck Plan

M/S Seaventure

A WORLD-CLASS SMALL SHIP EXPERIENCE

Seaventure features a  1-A Super ice class rating  — the highest ice class awarded to passenger vessels. This means that we will be able to explore coves, bays, and channels that would previously have been forbidden to us.

The ship also offers a host of new activities. There’s a sauna, a fitness center, a custom-built citizen science lab, and heated saltwater pool. There is more storage space, which is important because it means we can carry more equipment, so that more of our guests can participate in activities like kayaking and camping.

The common areas are larger and beautifully appointed, and the ship has two kitchens, one on the Lido deck for  al fresco  dining when weather permits.

Come explore with us.

Falkland Islands & South Georgia Cruises

Take a Falkland Islands and South Georgia cruise for unparalleled wildlife viewing in one of the world’s most remote locations. Narrow down our many trips below to find your optimal Falklands South Georgia cruise. Your Falklands South Georgia expedition can include a visit to Antarctica, or simply be a focused tour of these two islands.

In fact, the Falklands and South Georgia are so sought-after by intrepid polar travelers that close to half of our  Antarctica cruises  include a South Georgia Island tour. Why? Read about  South Georgia Antarctica  and why to go. When you’re ready to start planning, following are considerations toward selecting your ideal Falkland Islands and South Georgia cruise.

ON THIS PAGE – Falkland Islands & South Georgia Cruises: Include Antarctica? Falklands Without South Georgia? Fly & Cruise? Luxury Options Places to Visit Starting & Ending Our expertise Start Planning More Resources View All Falkland Islands & South Georgia Cruises

Should I Include Antarctica in My South Georgia Expedition?

In most cases, yes. You will be so close! If you have not been to Antarctica, this is the time to go as you will be just two days away by boat and can essentially travel to South Georgia, Antarctica and the Falklands in a triangle-shaped route. (Learn more about how to go to South Georgia Island .) But have you already been to Antarctica? Even those who have already been to the Antarctic Peninsula seek out Falkland Islands and South Georgia cruise itineraries because these islands are such a distinct experience. Many choose to return to Antarctica in another month to experience the everchanging icescapes and wildlife. But you can also simply take a Falklands to South Georgia trip. We have options for you either way.

What About a Falkland Islands Antarctica Cruise?

Note that if you are seeking a Falkland Islands Antarctica cruise only (without a stop in South Georgia), ask our experts since most itineraries sail from the Falklands to South Georgia, then on to Antarctica. To bypass one of these islands without the other is not common due to their proximity in the remote Southern Ocean en route to Antarctica.

Fly & Cruise from the Falklands to South Georgia

Consider a combination of flying and cruising from the Falklands to South Georgia and Antarctica for a more time-efficient expedition. On “fly” itineraries, look to meet the ship in the Falklands to begin your travel to South Georgia oversea. For those who are concerned about  seasickness , we suggest looking to both South Georgia cruise itineraries within the  Antarctica Air Cruise , which enables travelers to skip crossing the Drake Passage.

Luxury Falkland Islands and South Georgia Cruise Options

Want to experience your Falkland Islands and South Georgia cruise in style? Consider one of our  luxury Antarctica cruises , including:

  • Go with the top guides on a cruise to South Georgia with National Geographic.
  • Travel to South Georgia aboard a new cruise ship to Antarctica .
  • Cruise in the comfort of a 5-star hotel aboard a luxury French expedition ship with refined and attentive service, unrivaled elegance and a unique menu of onboard activities (see our  Expert Aboard ship review of L’Austral ).
  • Sail aboard one of Antarctica’s smallest ships,  Magellan Explorer , for a more intimate Falklands and South Georgia Island tour.

Places to Visit on a South Georgia & Falklands Cruise

Look for these place names in Falklands to South Georgia cruise itineraries. There just might be one that you want to ensure is on your expedition.

A Falklands South Georgia cruise map showing the tip of Argentina, the Falklands, South Georgia, King George Island and the Antarctic Peninsula.

South Georgia Island

Often considered the star of the show on these expeditions, this island is famed for its king penguins (the largest crèche in the world), elephant seals and historical significance in whaling and polar exploration. Read more in our All About South Georgia & Why to Go blog, but your South Georgia cruise will often include a stop at Grytviken, formerly the island’s largest whaling station.

Falkland Islands

South Georgia cruises typically include a visit to the Falkland Islands, which like South Georgia, features an abundance of penguins. Unlike South Georgia, however, the Falklands are inhabited. Almost any Falklands and South Georgia cruise will visit the East Falkland’s capital of Port Stanley, where the majority of the locals reside. In fact, some Falklands and South Georgia cruises embark or disembark the ship in Port Stanley, connecting to the mainland by air.

South Sandwich Islands

A cruise to South Georgia and the Falklands that includes a visit to the South Sandwich Islands is a rare treat. South Sandwich travelers are rewarded with a chinstrap penguin colony of nearly 1,000,000 members, and the chance to experience this island chain discovered by famous explorer Captain James Cook. Little is known about these islands, and due to their steep peaks and little vegetation, exploration is typically by Zodiac.

South Orkney Islands

These islands offer impressive glaciers and the opportunity to visit Argentinean science station Orcadas Base on Laurie Island—the oldest Antarctic station still in operation, established in 1903—where scientists collect meteorological data. Not all travel to South Georgia includes a stop at these remote islands, so look carefully at your intended route if you wish to see them.

Elephant Island

Travelers interested in polar exploration history will want to ensure that Elephant Island is a stop on their cruise to South Georgia. It was here that the crew of Shackleton’s Endurance overwintered while he and five men crossed open ocean in a small lifeboat to reach South Georgia and arrange the rescue of their fellow crew members. Certain itineraries will attempt to visit this exact locale, known as Point Wild.

The Antarctic Circle

To truly experience it all, and for an unforgettable highlight, elect for a cruise to South Georgia that includes an Antarctic Polar Circle crossing. Crossing the Antarctic Circle at 66°33´ South of the equator is an impressive achievement, as it’s a part of the world visited by very few people.

Starting & Ending Your South Georgia Falklands Cruise

There are various locations to begin and complete your South Georgia Falklands cruise. While most South Georgia trips operate round-trip from Ushuaia, Argentina, options also exist to link your South Georgia cruise with Santiago or Punta Arenas in Chile, Buenos Aires or Puerto Madryn in Argentina, or even sail the Argentinean coastline en route to your South Georgia Island tour.

Hear It From Falklands to South Georgia Travelers

The staff was great, the room was more than we expected, the food was tremendous and the excursions each day and lectures were all terrific. Andrew, our Adventure Specialist, was extremely responsive and we always felt that he had worked thoroughly to get us answers to our questions. We would use him again and recommend him to our friends. We felt well taken care of and prepared for this adventure.

We had a wonderful time on our trip - we knew what to expect and pack from our pre-trip materials, and once we got on the boat, we were fully taken care of and given ample information on what we would be doing each day and how to prepare. There was a nice variety of activities to do on the boat when we weren't doing operations. The operations felt very well-executed and our safety was kept in mind at all times. The expert staff also enhanced our experience by pointing out interesting things to see or answering questions about the landscape and animals.

The first time I stepped onto Antarctica, I just closed my eyes and tried to envision the globe and where I was on it at that very moment; definitely a wow moment and a wow trip! Since I prefer masses of wildlife to masses of humanity, I had a wonderful experience. Be prepared to be amazed!

The trip could not have been better! It was spectacular! There were so many great experiences, but two of the best were landing at St. Andrews Bay on South Georgia Island and taking a Zodiac cruise in Paradise Harbour. Bring your sense of wonder and awe!

The trip far, far, far, far, far, far exceeded our expectations. I had one "far" in the sentence when we left South Georgia Island after seeing 250,000 King Penguins at St. Andrews Point and added the second when we saw blue whales on two different days. The third "far" was added when we saw hundreds of whales for 6 hours along the iceberg, A68a...

This was a trip that was re-arranged several times due to COVID. We really enjoyed the trip and it was worth the two year wait! The quality of service and accommodations on the Ultramarine were first class. Antarctica is so spectacular you won't believe it!

Sharon and I had an awesome trip. The staff was great, the room was more than we expected, the food was tremendous and the excursions each day and lectures were all terrific. We connected with many people during the meals, excursions, and on the ship and really enjoyed speaking with many of the passengers throughout our 19 days on the ship. We wanted an exhibition ship trip with many historical and animal lectures to prepare us for what we would be seeing. We looked for a trip that would have a high % of animal sightings, unique ability to kayak, historical understanding and ability to understand the Antarctica continent.

Accommodations Review

The cabin on the ship was very roomy and the appointments were great. The Arakur Hotel in Ushuaia was very comfortable, convenient, the food was very good and the staff was very helpful with taking care of our flight boarding passes.

Meals Review

The food had a great variety with entries, side dishes and desserts were always great. But there was always too much food. For lunch, we would have been happy with a simple soup and sandwich served in the Club each day instead of using the main dining room. We opted for that option when they offered it but it was not offered each day.

Crew & Guides Review

All members of the Exhibition Team were professional and enthusiastic. Falcon was a great historian and brought the whole exhibition to life with his stories and lectures. I liked Stephi who provided the lectures on the rocks and earth subjects. The kayak team were always great and worked to make the kayaking a memory for the trip. They succeeded. The captain and Pablo went out of their way to find alternatives when scheduled landings could not be done. Dr. Paul went out of his way to support Sharon when she ended up with sea sickness during the trip. Turned out that her use of the patch was overkill and she did not need it after taking it off 1/2 way through the trip. Having a photographer on board was a great help in hearing about the tips. Marty was excellent in animal watching and was a great resources for all questions. Mark as the hotel manager was wonderful to connect with. He was always upbeat and willing to help with any issues.

Itinerary Review

The trips in the Zodiacs were a highlight in the Antarctica Peninsula and paddling in the kayak in the glacier waters with whales swimming around us was unbelievable.

Transportation Review

Although we handled the airline reservations, Andrew was very helpful in getting us the information on getting to the hotel.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Andrew, our Adventure Specialist, was extremely responsive and we always felt that he had worked thoroughly to get us answers to our questions.  We would use him again and recommend him to our friends. We felt well taken care of and prepared for this adventure.

Traveler Advice

Do not miss South Georgia! We would like to revisit it again in October or November. There are trade-offs in what time of year you go and how far south into Antarctica a person wants to venture.

Our room was always tidy and it was spacious and equipped with everything we needed to feel at home. The biggest drawback on board was the temperature of the boat, as it was difficult to adjust and often felt too hot at night or on sunny days.

The variety of food and the extensive fresh produce options helped keep mealtime exciting. I would like to see more non-western dinner options (meat + protein + carb format can feel a bit stale) and more spicy options.

We enjoyed our South Georgia landings very much, as we were completely surrounded by wildlife in a lush yet formidable environment. There was always so much to appreciate just by observing what the animals were doing in their communities. I also enjoyed the Polar Plunge as it was adventurous and felt like an impromptu party at the same time. I didn't enjoy kayaking as much as I thought, as the water was quite cold which started to negatively influence the experience on our longer outings. It was still a nice way to diversify our experience though. Near the end of our Antarctica stint, some of the landings started to feel a bit repetitive as the wildlife we saw did not vary too much and the landings usually involved some amount of walking on ice.

Our leader was very personable yet professional - I felt confident that he had everything under control and was able to answer all the questions we had about the landings. Even on the walkie-talkies that the staff carried, I could hear Mario calmly and clearly directing operations so that everyone had enough time to enjoy themselves and stay safe. Our staff were all fantastic - they had such positive attitudes and a seemingly endless amount of information about the weather, geography, animals etc. They were so happy to answer questions which encouraged me and others to ask whatever was top of mind. Sarah and Mau were wonderful kayak leaders too and helped put us at ease about the weather and the sights we would see by boat.

Andrew was available for any questions quite promptly and with great detail.

Don't overpack - think about it as a long camping trip. Bring a nice camera (even a simple one) so you can get proper zoom on your photos as oftentimes the sights are quite far away and harder to capture by phone.

The first time I stepped onto Antarctica, I just closed my eyes and tried to envision the globe and where I was on it at that very moment; definitely a wow moment and a wow trip! Penguins, penguins, penguins, penguins, penguins! Gosh, I love them! South Georgia was fantastic. Since I prefer masses of wildlife to masses of humanity, I had a wonderful experience.

The M/S Plancius is a very nice clean ship with comfortable beds. I was impressed that they cleaned the windows many times during the voyage so that you always had a clear view from inside.

I thoroughly enjoyed all of our leaders and thought all were professional and enthusiastic. James Cresswell and Brent Houston were outstanding in their knowledge.

Chris Harter at AdventureSmith was outstanding in answering my endless questions; also in general he was just a pleasure to talk to, easygoing and friendly.

Be prepared to be amazed!

The trip could not have been better! It was spectacular! There were so many great experiences, but two of the best were landing at St. Andrews Bay on South Georgia Island and taking a Zodiac cruise in Paradise Harbour. At the former, we saw king penguins and fur seals galore, plus the landscape was beautiful. Cruising in Paradise Harbour, we saw seals and whales and icebergs.

I have wanted to go to Antarctica for years and there was never any question in my mind that I would include South Georgia, not only because of the wildlife, but because I am a Shackleton groupie. I looked at two companies/ships for this itinerary and chose the Sea Spirit because the triple room looked more comfortable than the room on the other ship, which was a factor for such a long trip.

Loved the Sea Spirit and its crew. The triple cabin was comfortable and had enough storage for our clothes and gear. However, I wish there had been a drying room for parkas, rain pants, and boots as there wasn't really a good place to hang them to dry.

The chef and his team were so flexible when meal times were changed to accommodate landings. I am really missing the afternoon tea!

The expedition team was uniformly fantastic. Anja, the leader, was absolutely superb, and I was impressed with the overall skill and knowledge levels of the entire team.

Nick answered all my questions, but there were a few things in the printed material that I think could have been clearer, especially when it came to the packing list.

This itinerary is an expedition, so be prepared and flexible. Bring your sense of wonder and awe!

A concern I had about this trip was that a) I'd never been on a cruise before and wasn't sure how I would handle being on a ship for three weeks with so many people and b) I was rooming with two people I had never met. What I kept in mind was that we all had something in common and that was that we wanted to go to South Georgia, which added time, money, and rigor to the trip. As it turned out, most of my fellow passengers were great and I was very lucky to have two wonderful roommates. I'm not sure I would enjoy a cruise to 'just' Antarctica the same way as I heard from people that the mix is different in that it includes people for whom the trip is just a vacation destination, as opposed to an expedition, an adventure, and a quest.

  • Antarctic Wildlife Adventure

We particularly wanted to do this trip because of the abundance of wildlife we expected to encounter and selected this ship because they offered the kayaking experience. Overall, the weather was very good. Most people seemed like minded and were there for the adventurous experience.

They upgraded our cabin and we were very pleased with the amount of space and the amenities in the room. We appreciated the twin windows and being able to see humpbacks diving from our cabin. It was kept very clean and it was a treat to have our bed turned down with chocolates on the pillow each night.

We liked the variety and the quality of the food.  There was always something new to try.  The dining room staff was very professional and personable.

Solon was our Principal Trip Leader. He was incredibly professional and it seemed like he was constantly working to maximize the encounters with wildlife and scenery, taking advantage of all the weather opportunities and going to places that they don't often go. He worked very closely with the captain who was very accommodating and caring about us having a memorable voyage. Aymie and Andrew were our kayak guides. We went out to kayak 10 different times and were able to get to know both of them well. They worked hard to keep us safe and well informed. They made sure that we didn't miss out on any land excursions. We've had quite a few kayak guides over the years that we've paddled and we loved these two. Marla was the marine biologist aboard the ship. She was very enthusiastic and had a passion for marine mammals that was infectious. We loved listening to her presentations and looked forward to hearing her voice on the PA saying that there was another whale sighting. Colin, the geologist aboard the ship, was very knowledgeable and able to make difficult subjects understandable to the passengers.

The trip far, far, far, far, far, far exceeded our expectations.  I had one "far" in the sentence when we left South Georgia Island after seeing 250,000 King Penguins at St. Andrews Point and added the second when we saw blue whales on two different days. The third "far" was added when we saw hundreds of whales for 6 hours along the iceberg, A68a. I added another "far" when we kayaked for over an hour with humpbacks all around and another "far" when minke whales were all around the kayaks the next day. The last "far" was added the day we didn't paddle since a leopard seal was all around the kayaks and then an orca came close. We had so many incredible experiences that we could never experience all of them in the same trip again. The guides told us that the close encounters that we had didn't happen very often and that we were very lucky that they all happened on our trip. The only thing that we didn't like was portions of the Drake Passage when it was a tad rough, but that experience gives us something to talk about.

We made our transportation arrangements through another travel agency.

Make sure that you take sea sickness meds. Take advantage of every opportunity to see wildlife.

  • Explorers & Kings

Please note: The primary ship(s) operating the mentioned itinerary can change from year to year, so the ship this guest cruised on may no longer be sailing this exact route. This was a trip that was re-arranged several times due to COVID. We really enjoyed the trip and it was worth the two year wait!

The quality of service and accommodations on the Ultramarine were first class. We were fortunate to be upgraded to a Penthouse Suite but any cabin would have been great on the Ultramarine.

If there is any room for improvement, I would say the food. We would have liked better beef and more shellfish seafood options. The food and wine selections were very good but not as first class as the accommodations.

[We most enjoyed]...Kayaking in Wilhelmina Bay. The bay was calm and beautiful. We saw some Minke Wales. Also saw King penguins on South Georgia island and our zodiac venture in the twilight and the snow. [We least enjoyed]...a charity auction the last evening on the ship that was executed pretty poorly. We could have done without that.

The expedition staff were genuinely interested in making sure the guests had the best experience possible. Ali was a terrific expedition leader. She really cared about her guests and her staff. Some notable other members were Jomi (birding guide), Derek (marine biologist) and the whole helicopter team.

Andrew did a great job of making sure we were taken care of and advocating on our behalf with Quark to make sure we got the best value for our money. I have done two trips with AdventureSmith Explorations and both have been absolutely wonderful.

Include South Georgia in your Antarctica itinerary. Its more summer like there so you see green grass and not as much ice and the king penguins are so beautiful. Antarctica is so spectacular you won't believe it!

Antarctica Via Falklands and South Georgia Cruise

Antarctica Via Falklands and South Georgia Cruise Image

The Antarctica via Falklands and South Georgia cruise is simply one of the best Antarctic experiences that can be had. It is our personal favourite and we can’t recommend it highly enough.

Not only will you explore the unforgettable Antarctic Peninsula, but you will also visit the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. Both islands are packed full of penguin rookeries and seal colonies and you’ll be able to get some incredible pics as you venture right up close to these amazing creatures. This cruise is a definite must for wildlife lovers and adventurers!

Your cruise will set off from the port city of Ushuaia where you will head straight to the Falkland Islands. The island has a lovely feel about it with its green hills, long white beaches and clear blue waters. You’ll find 5 species of penguin on the Falkland islands alone!

From the Falklands you will sail to the island of South Georgia. Here you will encounter more penguins and seals than you would have thought imaginable. Over a million seals will be witnessed pushing and shoving for space on the crowded beaches!

From South Georgia you sail to the Antarctic Peninsula. A landscape of frozen ice, towering glaciers and sculptured ice-bergs greets you. This is a wild and harsh land where the weather will dictate your itinerary.

You’ll take daily zodiac excursions and venture ashore to witness the majesty of the continent for yourself. Keep a sharp eye out for whales and lounging seals on ice floes.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

Route Map for the Antarctica Via Falklands and South Georgia Cruise

Because of the cruise’s long sailing time and unpredictable weather, all operators will offer a slightly different itinerary. Please note that the itinerary provided below reflects what we have personally experienced and is not a direct reflection of all operator’s itineraries.

DAY 1: ARRIVE IN USHUAIA

Today you arrive in the bustling city of Ushuaia. If you arrive early you will have the chance to explore the many shops and cafes on offer. If you’re feeling energetic then a quick trip to the  Tierra Del Fuego National Park  may be a good option.

DAY 2: EMBARKATION DAY

Today you board your cruise ship and greet your fellow passengers and crew members. Your ship will sail out through the Beagle Channel (named after Charles Darwin’s ship) before reaching open sea. It’s now time to find your sea legs! Your crew will go over all safety operations and show you around the ship that will be your home for the next three weeks.

DAY 3: CRUISING AT SEA

Today you will have the chance to get better acquainted with your fellow passengers and crew members. The guides will be more than happy to point out the variety of  seabirds that are spotted and even a whale or two! You will be given info on any extra activities such as kayaking that you may wish to undertake. Your crew will also go over all zodiac safety procedures and shore landing procedures.

DAY 4-5: FALKLAND ISLANDS (Islas Malvinas)

Here your camera will get its first official workout as you explore both the East Falkland and West Falkland via zodiac shore landings. You’ll get the chance to wander both islands and get up close and personal to some of the local wildlife including Magellanic, gentoo and rockhopper penguins and the black- browed albatross. If you’re lucky you might even spot a king penguin!

You will also visit Port Stanley – the Falklands Island’s main town. Port Stanley has a lovely English feel about it and it’s shops and cafes can only be described as eclectic! Make sure to grab a pint or cocktail in the local pub and say cheers to a wonderful expedition.

Your guides will give daily lectures on the local eco-system, history and geology of the landscape so you won’t miss a thing.

DAY 6-7: CRUISING AT SEA

Cruising from the Falklands Islands to South Georgia is when you officially enter Antarctic waters. Encircling the Antarctic continent are the freezing Antarctic waters that meet with the warmer waters of the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans. This creates an incredible abundance of marine life and, more importantly, krill. The large amounts of krill attracts pods of whales to the area and your guides will give a loud shout whenever one is spotted!

DAY 8-11: SOUTH GEORGIA

The island of South Georgia was made famous by whalers who used the island as a base in the late 18th and early 19th century. The wildlife populations were almost decimated during these times, however, they have rebounded in recent years thanks to strict governing laws. Whale bones, oil drums and old whaling station can still be seen strewn across the island as a reminder of the island’s grim history.

The island is also known as one of the key landing spots for Antarctic explorers. The great explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton is actually buried on the island at the settlement of settlement of Grytviken.

However, whilst the history of South Georgia is fascinating, the real highlight is its wildlife. Seals and penguins breed on the island in their millions! You’ll witness king penguin rookeries and elephant seal colonies 10,000 strong. Your camera will not stop clicking as you stand on a beach covered entirely in wildlife!

DAY 12-13: CRUISING AT SEA

Say goodbye to the enormous wildlife colonies and prepare to set sail for Antarctica! Your days will be filled with on-board lectures as your expert guides prepare you for what is in store on the Antarctic Peninsula. You’ll have a chance to relax on the ship and identify sea-birds and marine wildlife as you venture closer to the White Continent. If weather permits, some operators will try and make landfall on the South Orkney Islands – your first official stop in Antarctic.

DAY 14-17: SOUTH SHETLAND ISLANDS AND ANTARCTIC PENINSULA

Reaching Antarctica cannot really be put into words. The general reaction is one of awe. The harsh frozen environment captivates people in a way that no other landscape can. Its sheer outlandishness draws you in and makes you feel like you have arrived on another planet.

Your crew will stop at the most notable places along the peninsula and you’ll be given the chance to hike up a glacier, photograph penguins and seals and go in search of whales. Your crew will always keep you up to speed on the environment and wildlife and take you to any notable historic points. One of the most beautiful moments is photographing a blue hued ice-berg that seems to light up the surrounding sea with a blue luminescence.

If you wish, you will be able to go kayaking, camping or snow-shoeing with an expert. This will come at an additional cost but is well worth it if you’re the active adventurous type who likes to experience something totally unique!

DAY 18-19: CROSSING THE DRAKE PASSAGE

Today your cruise will begin its journey home. This involves crossing the infamous Drake Passage. Notoriously rough, you should pray for calm weather. This is your unofficial Antarctica rite-of-passage as you venture across the passage. Your lectures will continue and your guides will continue to point out any key wildlife encountered along the crossing.

DAY 20: ARRIVAL IN USHUAIA

All good things must come to an end. After eating breakfast on-board you will arrive back in Ushuaia. Here you will say your final farewells to your fellow shipmates and crew before heading on to your next adventure!

Antarctica Peninsula Circle cruise via Falklands and South Georgia

One of the best cruises in our opinion, the Antarctica Peninsula circle cruise via Falklands and South Georgia not only visits the peninsula and takes in the wildlife-rich islands of South Georgia and the Falklands, but it also crosses the Antarctic circle!

How much does this cruise cost?

The Antarctica via Falklands and South Georgia cruise varies quite dramatically in price depending on operator and season. Generally you should be looking to pay in the region of US$12,000 – $15,000 for a good operator. However, this is for basic, shared accommodation. For upper deck rooms and suites you should expect to pay in excess of US$18,000 pp.

Please do your research and read previous customer reviews as these are your best resources for choosing the right cruise . Although these cruises are expensive, price should not be your main factor. We have literally always found that you get what you pay for when it comes to Antarctica cruises.

Many websites and operators will offer seemingly low prices, however, this is usually just to get you in and inquire. You’ll soon find out that those rates are ‘fully booked’. We also get a lot of people asking us about last minute deals. Whilst these are occasionally offered, they are unpredictable and, as it say on the tin, ‘last minute’. This means you generally have to already be in Ushuaia! Something which most of us are not.

Please see our detailed page on Antarctica cruise costs .

What's usually include?

Please note that all Antarctic operators offer varying packages that not all operators will provide the same package. The list provided below is what we believe should be included as standard for this particular cruise.

•1 night hotel stay in Ushuaia before departure

•19 nights on-board the ship

•Ratio of at least 1 expedition member per 10 guests

•Arrival and departure transfers to and from Ushuaia airport

•Expert on-board lectures

•Daily zodiac excursions in Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica

•Waterproof boots for shore landings

•Expedition parka

•20 breakfasts, 18 lunches, 19 dinners (note that some operators do not include food)

•Optional extra activities offered for additional cost – kayaking, hiking etc.

What is the best time for this cruise?

The Antarctica via Falklands and South Georgia cruise is run during the summer period – from early November through to late March. All Antarctica cruises are incredible whenever you go, however, choosing a certain period to sail definitely has its advantages.

For instance, if your main focus is seeing whales then you should consider sailing later in the season when pods of whales are seen far more frequently. However, by going later in the season you miss out on the penguin chicks being born and the mating and territory rituals that occur in the early part of the season. Also, the earlier in the season you depart the more ice-bergs you will encounter as they haven’t had the chance to melt yet.

By sailing in the high part of the season around December/January, you’ll be able to enjoy Antarctica at her warmest. On the peninsula, temperatures regularly exceed 10 degrees Celsius during this period!

Please see our detailed page on when to visit Antarctica .

What gear do I need to take?

Camera gear and cold weather gear are your two main considerations. The weather is often very cold and you’ll need to bring several base layers, gloves, a warm fleece, beanie and a waterproof jacket. Good operators will provide you with an expedition parka which will be your main source of warmth during your shore landings.

Photographing in Antarctica is unlike normal photography and you will have to take into account weather considerations. You will need several weatherproof zipper bags to store your equipment in and several filters. For our detailed page on Antarctica photography tips, click here !

Please read our full Antarctic packing list .

Do I need travel insurance for this cruise?

Absolutely. Travel insurance is mandatory on Antarctica cruises and your operator will need to see proof of purchase before allowing you on-board. Please read your policy closely as some insurers don’t actually cover you for shore landings! Also pay close attention to the emergency evacuation cover as this is extremely expensive in Antarctica and you will need to have the appropriate policy to cover you for this.

Please see our detailed article on Antarctica travel insurance .

What level of fitness do I need for this cruise?

The Antarctica via Falklands and South Georgia cruise require very little fitness. However, you will have numerous landing opportunities in which you will have the chance to hike the surrounding landscape. This is by no means mandatory, but a good level of fitness will allow you to explore further and longer.

Please remember that you are allowed to sit down at any point and there is absolutely no pressure to go to certain places if you don’t feel up to it. We always advise that a strong sense of curiosity is far more important any real fitness levels!

Antarctica Cruises

Falkland Islands - South Georgia - Antarctica (19D)

antarctica falklands south georgia cruise

This Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and Antarctic Peninsula cruise is an animal-lover’s dream come true. The expedition explores one of the last untamed areas on Earth – a land of ruggedly beautiful landscapes and amazingly varied wildlife.

antarctica falklands south georgia cruise

Standard Activities

About the falkland islands - south georgia - antarctica (19d), itinerary day to day, end of the world, start of a journey.

Your voyage begins where the world drops off. Ushuaia, Argentina, reputed to be the southernmost city on the planet, is located on the far southern tip of South America. Starting in the afternoon, you embark from this small resort town on Tierra del Fuego, nicknamed “The End of the World,” and sail the mountain-fringed Beagle Channel for the remainder of the evening.

The winged life of the westerlies

Several species of albatross follow the vessel into the westerlies, along with storm petrels, shearwaters, and diving petrels.

Finding the Falklands

The Falkland Islands offer an abundance of wildlife that is easily approachable, though caution is always advised. These islands are largely unknown gems, the site of a 1982 war between the UK and Argentina. Not only do various species of bird live here, but chances are great you’ll see both Peale’s dolphins and Commerson’s dolphins in the surrounding waters.

During this segment of the voyage, you may visit the following sites:

Carcass Island  – Despite its name, this island is pleasantly rodent-free and hence bounteous with birdlife and many endemic species. Anything from breeding Magellanic penguins and gentoos to numerous waders and passerine birds (including Cobb’s wrens and tussock-birds) live here.

antarctica falklands south georgia cruise

The seat of Falklands culture

The capital of the Falklands and center of its culture, Port Stanley has some Victorian-era charm: colorful houses, well-tended gardens, and English-style pubs are all to be found here. You can also see several century-old clipper ships nearby, silent witnesses to the hardships of 19th century sailors. The small but interesting museum is also worth a visit, covering the early days of settlement up to the Falklands War. Approximately 2,100 people live in Port Stanley. Admission to the museum is included.

Once more to the sea

En route to South Georgia, you now cross the Antarctic Convergence. The temperature cools considerably within the space of a few hours, and nutritious water rises to the surface of the sea due to colliding water columns. This phenomenon attracts a multitude of seabirds near the ship, including several species of albatross, shearwaters, petrels, prions, and skuas.

antarctica falklands south georgia cruise

South Georgia Journey

Today you arrive at the first South Georgia activity site. Please keep in mind that weather conditions in this area can be challenging, largely dictating the program.

Over the next several days, you have a chance to visit the following sites:

Prion Island  – This location is closed during the early part of the wandering albatross breeding season (November 20 – January 7). From January on, the breeding adults have found their partners and are sitting on eggs or nursing their chicks. Enjoy witnessing the gentle nature of these animals, which possess the largest wingspan of any bird in the world.

Fortuna Bay  – A beautiful outwash plain from Fortuna Glacier is home to a large number of king penguins and seals. Here you may also have the chance to follow the final leg of Shackleton’s route to the abandoned whaling village of Stromness. This path cuts across the mountain pass beyond Shackleton’s Waterfall, and as the terrain is partly swampy, be prepared to cross a few small streams.

Salisbury Plain, St. Andrews Bay, Gold Harbour  – These sites not only house the three largest king penguin colonies in South Georgia, they’re also three of the world’s largest breeding beaches for Antarctic fur seals. Literally millions breed on South Georgia during December and January. Only during the mid-season do they peak in their breeding cycle. There will be some young adult Elephant seals as well as this seasons ‘Weaner’s; the young Elephant Seals that have been left to fend for themselves. Watch your step and stay cool when walking the beaches during this time.

Grytviken  – In this abandoned whaling station, king penguins walk the streets and elephant seals lie around like they own the place – because they basically do. Here you might be able to see the South Georgia Museum as well as Shackleton’s grave.

In the afternoon of day 10 and depending on the conditions, we will start sailing southwards in the direction of the South Orkney Islands.

Southward bound

There may be sea ice on this route, and at the edge of the ice some south polar skuas and snow petrels could join the other seabirds trailing the vessel south.

The scenic vistas of South Orkney

Depending on the conditions, you might visit Orcadas Base, an Argentine scientific station on Laurie Island in the South Orkney archipelago. The personnel here will happily show you their facility, where you can enjoy expansive views of the surrounding glaciers. If a visit isn’t possible, you may instead land in Coronation Island’s Shingle Cove.

Last push to the Antarctic

Enormous icebergs and a fair chance of fin whale sightings ensure there’s never a dull moment on this last sea voyage south. Also, your best chance to spot Antarctic petrels is here.

Awe-inspiring Antarctica

antarctica falklands south georgia cruise

Familiar seas, familiar friends

Your return voyage is far from lonely. While crossing the Drake, you’re again greeted by the vast array of seabirds remembered from the passage south. But they seem a little more familiar to you now, and you to them.

There and back again

Every adventure, no matter how grand, must eventually come to an end. It’s now time to disembark in Ushuaia, but with memories that will accompany you wherever your next adventure lies.

On this ultimate wildlife expedition, each destination is more amazing than the last.

Falklands South Georgia Antarctica cruise

The Falkland Islands

The windswept and treeless Falkland Islands are a birders’ paradise. The islands boast a great abundance and diversity of birdlife including five species of penguin, 80 percent of the world’s population of black-browed albatross, and numerous species of waterfowl such as the endemic Falkland steamerduck. The waters around the Falkland Islands are home to various species of cetacean including the southern right whale, killer whale, and Peale’s dolphin. Breeding populations of South American fur seal, South American sea lion, and southern elephant seal frequent the islands’ many beaches. Spring South Georgia cruise.

South Georgia Island

The island of South Georgia is the world’s premier destination for subantarctic wildlife viewing. In this remote and stunningly beautiful wilderness, seabirds and marine mammals are counted in the millions. The island’s beaches are packed with fur seals and elephant seals jostling for space alongside innumerable king penguins. In addition to penguins, South Georgia hosts a wide variety of birdlife in staggering abundance. The island is home to albatross, petrels, prions, skuas, shags, gulls, terns, and the carnivorous South Georgia pintail duck. This is also a fantastic place to witness the breeding behavior of the world’s largest seabird, the wandering albatross.

The Antarctic Peninsula is the ultimate polar wilderness. There is nothing else like it on Earth. Lofty serrated mountain ranges, all-encompassing glaciers, icebergs of every size and shape, and nutrient-rich waters define this pristine environment inhabited by robust populations of penguins, seals, and whales. Detailed Itinerary and Activities

Itinerary, landings and all other activities during the cruise depend strongly on ice and weather conditions and are subject to the decisions of the Expedition Leader and the Captain of the vessel. Encounters with any mentioned wildlife cannot be guaranteed.

Day 1 • Ushuaia, Argentina

Welcome to Ushuaia, the world’s southernmost city and starting point of our expedition. Upon your arrival at the airport we provide a transfer to your hotel, which has been arranged by us and is included in the price of the voyage. For the rest of the day you are free to explore the city. Take advantage of souvenir shopping and a variety of dining options in the city center.

Day 2 • Embarkation in Ushuaia

In the afternoon we provide a group transfer to the pier and welcome you aboard the luxury expedition ship M/V Sea Spirit. Explore the ship and get comfortable in your home away from home for the extraordinary adventure to come. Savor the anticipation of your Antarctic dreams coming true as we slip our moorings and sail toward a true wilderness where wildlife abounds. The scenery as we sail through the Beagle Channel on our first evening is wonderful and there is already the possibility of marine mammal encounters.

Day 3 • South Atlantic Ocean

After transiting the Beagle Channel and passing the islands of Tierra del Fuego, we head northeast toward the Falkland Islands. We keep a lookout for marine mammals such as dolphins and whales. The ship’s stabilizing fins provide comfort in the event of rough seas.

Days 4-5 • Falkland Islands

The remote and sparsely-populated Falkland Islands are a birders’ paradise. We anticipate visiting one or more of the isolated outer islands where large colonies of penguins and albatross are easily accessible. The Falklands are also a great place to observe marine mammals. Fur seals and elephant seals can be found on sandy beaches while the waters in and around the archipelago are home to various whale and dolphin species. Our route and exploration opportunities are dependent on weather among these windswept islands.

We also intend to visit Stanley, the charmingly British capital of the Falkland Islands. Attractions within pleasant walking distance along the waterfront promenade include the Falkland Islands Museum, the governor’s house, a cathedral with impressive whalebone arch outside, a war memorial, quality gift shops, pubs, and views of shipwrecks in the harbor.

Days 6-7 • Southern Ocean

From the Falkland Islands we head east toward South Georgia, passing the remote, seabird-covered pinnacles known as Shag Rocks on the way. We also cross the Antarctic Convergence, the biological boundary of the Southern Ocean. Briefings, bio-security procedures, and lectures from our expert staff prepare you for our arrival in South Georgia.

Days 8-12 • South Georgia Island

This is expedition cruising at its most authentic. Our route and exploration opportunities in South Georgia are heavily dependent on the weather conditions we encounter. Our experienced captain and expedition leader decide the itinerary and continually adjust plans as conditions and opportunities warrant. You can be sure that the best possible advantage will be taken of the circumstances presented to us by Nature in this wild and remote corner of the world. We take every safe opportunity to go ashore in this amazing place.

South Georgia is a scenic wilderness and an unrivalled paradise for subantarctic wildlife viewing. The islands are said to host upwards of 100 million seabirds, including numerous species of albatross, penguins, prions, petrels, and terns. On beaches such as those at Salisbury Plain and St. Andrews Bay, over 100,000 elephant seals and three million fur seals jostle for space among innumerable penguins including stately king penguins and sprightly macaroni penguins. The recently completed rat eradication program is sure to make this wilderness even more pristine and rich with birdlife.

The bountiful waters surrounding South Georgia are also inhabited by an increasing number of whales. The historical whaling station of Grytviken is now home to the excellent South Georgia Museum managed by the South Georgia Heritage Trust. This is also the final resting place of Ernest Shackleton, the legendary polar explorer.

Our days in South Georgia are filled with memorable excursions, sumptuous meals, presentations by our experts, and enough incredible scenery and wildlife to fill your camera and overwhelm your emotions.

Days 13-14 • Southern Ocean

After our amazing time in South Georgia we proceed southwest toward the Antarctic Peninsula. Pelagic seabirds including the majestic albatross are common in these waters and can readily be viewed from panoramic open decks or from exterior stateroom windows and balconies.

Days 15-18 • South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula

The wilderness of Antarctica is subject to unpredictable weather and ever-changing ice conditions, which dictate our route and exploration opportunities. This is a real expedition. We exploit every opportunity to experience excellent wildlife viewing, amazing scenery, and excursions via Zodiac.

The Antarctic Peninsula region contains some of the world’s most impressive scenery and some of Antarctica’s best wildlife viewing opportunities. Protected bays and narrow channels are surrounded by towering mountain peaks covered in permanent snow and immense glaciers. Icebergs of every size and description complete an image of incomparable beauty. Waters rich with krill are home to a variety of whale and seal species. The whole area is alive with penguins foraging at sea and forming large nesting colonies at special places on land. The area is also home to Antarctic research stations of various nationalities. Some stations have a gift shop and post office.

The South Shetland Islands are the northernmost islands in Antarctica and will likely be our first sighting of land. This wild and beautiful island chain contains numerous landing sites with abundant wildlife and historical significance. Among them is Elephant Island, where men from Shackleton’s famous Endurance expedition spent the winter.

Farther south, on the Antarctic Peninsula, the vast Gerlache Strait area contains sheltered bays, accessible wildlife, and stunning scenery.

Days 19-20 • Drake Passage

From Antarctica we head north through the Drake Passage toward South America. Presentations and workshops by our expert staff, as well as our range of onboard recreation facilities, ensure that these days at sea are not idly spent. This is also the time for our End of Voyage ceremonies including slideshow and farewell dinner.

Day 21 • Disembarkation in Ushuaia, Argentina

After breakfast we say farewell in the city of Ushuaia, where we started. We provide a group transfer to the airport or to the town center if you wish to spend more time here. As you look back on your wonderful experience in Antarctica, you may already be looking forward to your next incredible adventure to the ice! Falklands South Georgia Antarctica cruise
