  • The Venice Pass
  • ACTV Travel Card
  • Museum Card

In addition, a classic gondola ride on the canals of Venice is also included ( Book your Venice City Pass here ). During the booking process you can conveniently reserve your desired dates and time slots for the various activities. After payment you will receive your tickets by email or you can show them via smartphone.

This Venice City Pass includes these attractions:

2) ACTV Public transport card

When you plan to use public transport in Venice you always have to rely on ACTV's waterbuses ( vaporettos ). Book your ACTV travel card easily via this link . During the booking process you can indicate for how many days you need a travel card. You will receive a smartphone voucher, which you can easily exchange at a Venezia Unica self-service ticket machine at a Vaporetto stop or at the Venezia Unica counter at Piazzale Roma (next to the station and main bus stop).

If you want to use public transport (via water), you are always depending on ACTV in Venice. You can pre-order your tickets for the Vaporetto waterbuses, choosing between the following ACTV travel cards:

  • Regular ACTV ticket for 75 minutes (9.50 €)
  • One day ticket , which is valid for the water buses in Venice and the islands of Lido, Murano and Burano (25 €)

Suggestion : Are you considering the use of the Vaporetto? Then download the ' AVM Venezia app ' in the Play Store. This is a handy route planner from the transport company ACTV, so that you know exactly which line to take to and from your hotel.

3) Venice Museum Pass

This Venice Museum Pass is especially interesting if you plan to visit many museums. It is a pass that is valid for no less than 180 days and includes 11 museums , including a number of important museums on St. Mark's Square like the popular Doge's Palace . However, the disadvantage of this card is, that after your order, you still have to pick up the 'physical card' at one of the (central) collection locations in Venice. When booking, note that the museum card comes in two variants: the Museum Card Chorus (only interesting if you want to visit a lot of churches) and the most booked Museum Card Plus .

The Venice Museum Card Plus gives access to the following museums:

  • Fast track ticket Doge's Palace
  • Correr Museum
  • National Archaeological Museum
  • Biblioteca Marciana
  • Ca 'Rezzonico
  • The house of Carlo Goldoni
  • Palazzo Mocenigo
  • Glass Museum (Murano)
  • Lace Museum (Burano)
  • Natural History Museum
  • Info and bookings Venice Museum Pass

4) Venice City Pass (Turbopass)

The Venice City Pass (or Turbopass) is the most comprehensive city pass for Venice. The Venice City Turbopass is valid for 1 to 7 days and gives access to various museums, 30+ attractions and churches. Furthermore, the Venice City Turbopass also includes some boat rides. This new tourist card is very interesting if you stay for a longer period in Venice.

Is a Venice pass worth it?

Yes, purchasing a Venice pass is worth it! If you plan on visiting several landmarks or museums that are included on the pass, then you can save hundreds of dollars in fees by bundling your admission together.

However, there are a few different Venice attraction passes to choose from, based on your interests and itinerary.

What are the best Venice city passes available?

There are six primary Venice attraction passes you can choose from:

  • Venice Museum Pass
  • MUVE Friend Card
  • Venice Unica Pass

The Venice Pass

Venice discovery pass, san marco city pass, editor’s choices: the best venice city passes, venice unica city pass.

If you’re interested in developing your own customized program of activities, museums, excursions, and transit passes, the Venice Unica City Pass is an excellent Venice tourist pass.

With an average of 4.5 stars from more than 190 reviews, The Venice Pass is the best choice if you want to experience Venice’s major three attractions–St. Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace, and a gondola ride.

Venice Museum Pass and MUVE Friend Card

Purchasing the standard Venice Museum Pass gives you one-time admission to twelve of the city’s major Civic museums over six months.

In contrast, the MUVE Friend Card gives you unlimited access to the city’s twelve museums over twelve months.

The Venice Museum Pass costs €36 for adults, and the MUVE Friend Card costs €45 for adults. You can look at the current pricing for the  Venice Museum Pass  and the  MUVE Friend Card  here.

  • Attractions : You can visit all twelve of the city’s major museums included in both passes. Participating museums include the Doge’s Palace, Museo Correr, National Archaeological Museum, Monumental Rooms of the Biblioteca Marciana, Cà Rezzonico, Palazzo Mocenigo Museum, Carlo Goldoni’s House, Ca’ Pesaro, the Murano Glass Museum, the Burano Lace Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Palazzo Fortuny Museum.
  • Validity : The standard Venice Museum Pass is valid for 160 days, and the MUVE Friend Card is good for 365 days once you activate them for the first time.
  • Suitability : These passes are excellent if you were planning to visit a few of the museums on this list already or are fascinated by some of the lesser-known museums in Venice. I highly recommend it if you live in Italy, close to Venice, and often take day trips into the city .
  • You do not need to make a reservation with any museums in advance before you visit; you can just show up and activate your pass.
  • You’ll have six whole months to visit all of the museums offered with the Venice Museum pass and a full year with the MUVE Friend Card, so you don’t need to cram all of this art and history into just a few days.
  • It’s a straightforward, one-and-done purchase. When you buy this Venice attractions pass, you can access everything included.
  • If your trip to Venice is only a few days and you don’t live close enough to the city to visit again, you might not have the opportunity to check out all of the museums included.
  • You’ll need to purchase separate entry tickets if there are museums you want to visit that aren’t included in this pass.
  • Other significant landmarks and attractions that you might want to see in Venice aren’t included in this pass. Also, this pass doesn’t have a Vaporetto transportation pass.

How to Purchase and Use It

You can purchase the Venice Museum Pass or the MUVE Friend Card online.

A .pdf of your tickets will be delivered to you digitally, and you can either print it out or keep it on your phone.

When you visit a participating museum, have them scan the barcode listed on the ticket, and you’re good to go!

Why choose the Venice Museum Pass?

The Venice Museum Pass is worth it if all you want to do is visit the Musei Civici di Venezia museums.

You have twelve world-class museums to choose from and six full months in which to see them all.

It’s also more straightforward than the Venice Unica Pass since it doesn’t include any additional add-ons you need to worry about expiring if a specific date was selected.

Why choose the MUVE Friend Card?

The MUVE Friend Card is perfect if you live nearby and want the option to go back to the twelve museums within the Musei Civici di Venezia system.

You have one year to go back to any museums as often as you’d like.

The Venice Unica Pass price varies depending on several factors like age, access to select landmarks, and what additional offerings you choose.

The least-expensive level without any add-ons starts at €21.90 for Juniors (ages 6 – 29), €33.90 for Adults (ages 30 – 64), and €21.90 for Seniors (ages 65+).

You can take a look at the  current pricing here .

  • The All Venice City Pass includes access to Doge’s Palace and eleven other Musei Civici di Venezia museums, fourteen chorus churches, and admission to the Querini Stampalia Foundation.
  • The All Venice City Pass + Fenice includes access to everything in the All Venice pass, with the addition of a guided audio tour of Teatro La Fenice.
  • The St. Mark’s City Pass includes access to the Doge’s Palace and the other three Musei Civici di Venezia museums within Piazza San Marco, only Santa Maria del Giglio – Sacred Art Museum, Santo Stefano, and Santa Maria Formosa chorus churches, and the Querini Stampalia Foundation.
  • The St. Mark’s City Pass + Fenice includes access to everything in the St. Mark’s pass, with the addition of a guided audio tour of Teatro La Fenice.
  • Validity : For visitors to Venice, the Venice Unica Pass is valid for 24 months from the date of purchase unless the product has a specific expiration date. The Venice Unica Pass is valid for five years for frequent visitors or residents of Venice.
  • Suitability : This pass is perfect if you’re looking for more offerings than only museums, especially if you were planning to ride the Vaporetto a lot while in Venice or needed to purchase access to the city’s internet.
  • Unless otherwise stated for a particular add-on, you don’t need to make a reservation with any of the museums in advance before you visit; you can just show up and activate your pass.
  • Since thus Venice Card for visitors is valid for 24 months, if you come back to Venice within 2 years of your purchase date, you can still use your discount card’s benefits.
  • You can really mix and match different offerings to make the pass best fit your interests.
  • You can purchase several tickets for the Vaporetto at a discounted rate at once.
  • Although most museums don’t require a reservation and can be used at any time, any ticket you buy with a set date and time can not be changed after purchase. So if you’re schedule changes, you’re unfortunately locked into the commitment and can’t change it.
  • If your trip to Venice is only a few days and you don’t live close enough to the city to visit again, you might not have the opportunity to see everything included.
  • You’ll need to purchase a separate ticket if there are museums you want to visit that aren’t included in this pass.

To purchase the Venice Unica Pass, you need to  head to their website  and follow the prompts to create a tourist travel card for each person.

Next, you’ll select which of their base-level “Best Deals” tickets you want to start with.

Then, scroll through the additional add-ons and select which card you want to add it to.

Once you’re done, you’ll check out online, save your voucher to your phone, and/or print it out, so you have it with you when you arrive in Venice.

Since each pass is different, follow the directions listed on the voucher on how to access and use the pass you’ve purchased.

Why choose the Venice Unica Pass?

If you’re looking for more flexibility than the Venice Museum Pass, then the Venice Unica Pass is what you want to go with.

One of the base-level passes includes every museum included in the Venice Museum Pass and other admissions.

Or, if all twelve museums are overwhelming, you can choose a base-level pass that only consists of the four significant museums within Piazza San Marco for less, which still includes extra benefits and the option for add-ons.

venice tourist travel cards

The Venice Pass offers a curated selection of the top attractions most people plan to see when they come to Venice.

Since you’re bundling the cost of admission, it’s overall less expensive than if you were purchasing all of these separately.

The Venice Pass costs $97.38 for adults (ages 30+), $84.95 for youths (ages 6 – 29), and $34.19 for children (ages 2 – 5).

  • Attractions : The Venice Pass includes skip-the-line entrance to St. Mark’s Basilica with access to the Terrace and Pala d’Oro, fast-track admission to Doge’s Palace, a downloadable audio walking tour called Discover Venice: Past and Present, an audio tour led by a local historian called Welcome to Venice, and a shared 30-minute gondola ride.

  • Since you can choose the exact dates you want to use for each of the included attractions, you can spread your experiences out over the whole amount of time you’re visiting Venice instead of squeezing everything into 24 or 48 hours.
  • Once you buy The Venice Pass, Tiqets sends you a 10% discount code to use for your next purchase!
  • When you’re buying this Venice pass, you have to select all of your entrance times at the time of purchase.
  • Since your tickets are tied to the specific dates and times you chose at the time of booking, rescheduling any part of your ticket is not allowed after you make your purchase.

To purchase The Venice Pass, head to Tiqets and select “Book Now.”

Once you select the number of adult, youth, and children tickets you’ll need, you will work through the prompts to schedule each of the excursions your pass includes.

Why choose The Venice Pass?

This streamlined pass is an excellent choice if you’re interested in experiencing only the most famous landmarks in Venice–St. Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace, and enjoying a gondola ride.

venice tourist travel cards

Like the Venice Pass, the Venice Discovery Pass allows visitors to choose from a curated list of the best things to see and do in Venice.

However, it offers more experiences and landmarks than the more consolidated Venice Pass.

The Venice Discovery Pass has different pricing based on your age and how many days you want the pass to be active. You can view the current pricing breakdown on their website here.

  • Attractions : The Venice Discovery Pass includes a fast-track entrance to Doge’s Palace, admission into 15 different Catholic landmarks throughout the city, an Alilaguna Boat Transfer from the city center to the airport, and an audio tour led by a local historian called Welcome to Venice. It also includes 24-, 48-, or 72-hour unlimited access to Venice’s public water transportation system, the Vaporetto.
  • Validity : When you purchase the Venice Discovery Pass, you will schedule each of your included attractions at the time of booking. Your excursion is available on the date you selected in advance. However, your Venetian Churches Chorus Pass is valid for 1 year after its first use.
  • Suitability : This pass is a great choice if you’re interested in visiting Venice’s many historic churches or want to utilize an airport transfer or the Vaporetto system without worrying about additional bookings.
  • If you’re interested in visiting historic Catholic churches in Venice, this pass includes entry to fifteen churches.
  • No need to schedule an additional airport transfer and Vaporetto passes to get you into and around Venice–this pass does it for you.
  • The only major landmark the Venice Discovery Pass includes is Doge’s Palace, so you’ll still need to purchase entry to other museums you want to see.

To purchase the Venice Discovery Pass, head to Tiqets and select “Book Now.” Once you select the number of adult, youth, and children tickets you’ll need, you will work through the prompts to schedule each of the excursions your pass includes.

Why choose the Venice Discovery Pass?

If you’re looking for a Venice pass that combines an airport transfer with a Vaporetto pass, then this is a great choice.

This is an image of the Rialto bridge in Venice, Italy as seen from the water.

The San Marco City Pass is the only one of its kind here on this list of the best Venice city passes! If you’re a history buff who’s passionate about the Republic of Venice, this one is for you.

The San Marco City pass costs $40.80 for adults (ages 30-65), $25.10 for youths (ages 6-29), and $25.10 for seniors (ages 65+).

  • Attractions : The San Marco City Pass includes almost all of the most famous attractions in Piazza di San Marco. With this pass, you can visit Doge’s Palace, the Correr Museum, the National Archaeological Museum, the Marciana National Library, the Fondazione Querini Stampalia, and three churches–the Church of Santa Maria del Giglio, the Church of Santo Stefano, and the Church of Santa Maria Formosa.
  • Validity : When you purchase the San Marco City Pass, you can enter each included museum or monument one time and it’s valid for two years once activated. However, you must enter the Doge’s Palace on the date and time you select at the time of booking.
  • Suitability : This pass is great for anyone who is interested in only exploring the included museums around Piazza di San Marco.
  • Once you activate the pass with your entry to Doge’s Palace, you can use it for entry into the other included landmarks for two years.
  • Instead of purchasing one of these other Venice city passes with too many offerings for a short Venice itinerary, You’re only paying for the things you really want to do.
  • Although it’s called the San Marco City Pass, entry into the Basilica di San Marco is not included in this pass.
  • Once you purchase the pass, you can’t change your entry date and time for the Doge’s Palace.

To purchase the San Marco City Pass, you’ll need to visit the Civitatis and select the date you’re interested in activating your pass and the number of tickets you’ll need.

Once your pass has been purchased, you can schedule all of your additional activities up until the start time, as long as they have space available.

Why choose the San Marco City Pass?

If you’re interested in really exploring all of the different landmarks, the San Marco City Pass is for you.

You’ll be able to take time to discover the history of Venice inside these museums without paying for other museum entries you won’t have time to use.

Venice Sightseeing Passes Comparison Breakdown

venice tourist travel cards

Which is the best Venice city pass to buy for my trip?

Although each Venice attractions pass shares some similarities, here are my recommendations on which one to buy based on this Venice pass comparison:

The Overall Best Venice City Pass

After reviewing all of the information, and after very happily using the full Venice Museum Pass myself, the Venice Unica Pass is the best Venezia city pass overall, for both visitors and frequent visitors like myself.

It offers everything the Venice Museum Pass offers–and more.

However, what really sells me on the pass is that cardholders receive additional discounts from participating museums and restaurants.

The Best Venice Attractions Pass To Use Multiple Times

If you live near Venice or are planning to spend a lot of time in the city over the course of a year and want the flexibility to visit the Musei Civici di Venezia museums over and over again, then you need the MUVE Friend Card .

Since there are no restrictions on how often you can visit any of the participating museums, you can take your time working through different museums and go back to others that you want to explore further.

Or, if family and friends are coming to visit and you know they’ll want to head into these museums, then the MUVE Friend Card makes the most sense.

The Best City Pass Venice for Major Attractions

If you’re visiting Venice for a limited amount of time and only want to experience the most famous landmarks and attractions, The Venice Pass is the best choice for you.

Although the pass only includes five excursions, it has the Big 3–skip-the-line entrance to St. Mark’s Basilica with access to the Terrace and Pala d’Oro, fast-track admission to Doge’s Palace, and a shared 30-minute gondola ride.

If you’re not interested in wandering through museums and want to hit the biggest sites, this is the best pass for your itinerary.

The Best Pass to Explore San Marco

The San Marco City Pass is the perfect choice if you want to dive deep into the history and museums around Piazza di San Marco.

Although it does not include skip-the-line admission to the Basilica di San Marco, you can access the Doge’s Palace, the Marciana National Library, the National Archaeological Museum, and the Correr Museum–all museums surrounding the Piazza di San Marco.

The Case For A Venice Museum Pass

However, as I said, I’m a very happy Venice Museum Pass user!

When I first moved to the Veneto region, we didn’t know that there were different options for passes–we only saw the Venice Museum Pass available when we purchased individual tickets to visit Palazzo Ducale.

If you’re only going to be in Venice for a short time, so you don’t need the flexibility of multiple admission but want as many options as possible, this is the pass for you.

The Case of a Venice Discovery Pass

The Venice Discovery Pass offers the fewest bucket-list experiences in Venice .

However, if you’re interested in religious tourism and want to visit fifteen different historic Catholic churches in the city, this is the pass for you!

Also, if you don’t want to deal with the hassle of managing an airport transfer or scheduling your Vaporetto pass, the Venice Discovery Pass includes it for you.

What are some Venice experiences and landmarks not included on these passes?

  • If you’re interested in purchasing one of the Venice city passes for museums, then they do not include a classic Gondola ride. Book a  Grand Canal by Gondola with Commentary  tour to try this wonderful boat trip.
  • Although admission is included for four of the major museums in Piazza San Marco, entry into the Torre dell’Orologio and climbing up the San Marco Campanile are not included in any of these Venice passes.
  • If you want to explore the Doge’s Palace further with a  Secret Itineraries tour , you’re going to need to purchase the experience separately from your ticket to Palazzo Ducale.

The Best Venice Tourist Cards: Wrap-Up

Fortunately, Venice offers a variety of passes that allow tourists to visit the most incredible landmarks and museums in the city while bundling admission.

To ensure that you enjoy the most out of your stay in Venice, consider purchasing one of these Venice city passes!

ACTV Travel Passes

Unlimited public transportation for 1 to 7 days.

By Durant Imboden

ACTV Tourist Travel Card

Venice's standard single-journey vaporetto fares are obscenely high, but there is a way to limit the damage:

Buy a Venezia Daily Pass or a 2-, 3-, or 7-day Ticket, which allows unlimited travel on nearly all ACTV land and water services (not including the airport, but see "airport transportation" below).

You can buy a pass or multi-day ticket at any ACTV/Venezia Unica ticket booth or multilingual self-service ticket machine.

The pass or ticket will be activated (and the clock will begin ticking down) the first time you swipe the card against an electronic ticket reader at a vaporetto station or on a land bus.

One day:        €25,-- Two days:      €35,-- Three days:   €45,-- Seven days:   €65,--

Airport transportation:

For an extra €7 (one-way) or €13 (round trip), you can travel between Venice Marco Polo Airport and the city with your pass or multi-day ticket by ACTV land bus.

At the airport, buy your ticket at the Public Transport counter in the arrivals hall, and look for the No. 5 "Aerobus" to Venice's Piazzale Roma at the curb outside the terminal doors. (Note: Be sure to board the ACTV No. 5 Aerobus, not the ATVO "Venezia Express" coach.)

Rolling Venice (ages 14-29):

You can get an even better deal if you're 14 to 29 years of age: The Rolling Venice Card is valid for 3 days of unlimited ACTV boat and bus travel within the city ( not including the airport). Total cost for the stored-value card plus transportation is € 33 (€6 for the Rolling Venice ID card and €27 for transportation). For an extra €7 (one-day) or €13 (round trip), you can include airport transportation on ACTV's No. 5 "Aerobus."

Buy Rolling Venice at any ACTV/Venezia Unica ticket office or booth.

Venezia Unica city pass (for frequent users):

The Venezia Unica stored-value card for frequent users will cost you €100 just for the empty card if you're a visitor from outside Venice or the Veneto region. However, the card is valid for five years and lets you buy single fares, "carnets" of 10 rides, and commuter passes at ultra-cheap resident rates. It's a great value if you come to Venice often or are staying in the city for a month or two and plan to ride the vaporetto regularly.

Buy the Venezia Unica city pass for frequent users at any full-service Venezia Unica/ACTV ticket office in Venice or the surrounding region. (Bring your passport and be prepared to fill out a lengthy form.)

Note:  This "frequent users" pass is not the same as the Venezia Unica tourist pass for short-term visitors , which is designed for tourists and is more complicated to buy than ACTV's own daily pass and multi-day tickets.

Overview of the Types of Venice City Passes

There are a number of passes available for you to get the most out of your trip to Venice. Which one is best suited for you depends on a number of factors. In this section of the article, I will go over what the various passes are and then provide more detail about each one individually.

Not every pass is going to provide value, so you really have to choose wisely. Hopefully, this article will help you zero in on the right pass.

1 – Venezia Unica City Pass

The Venezia Unica Card offers access to all of Venice’s major cultural attractions, including Venice Museum Pass: This pass grants entry to some of the most popular museums in Venice , including fast track entrance to the Doge’s Palace and the Correr Museum.

Venezia Unica Pass

The Doge’s Palace, also referred to as Palazzo Ducale, stands as a magnificent testament to the grandeur of the Venetian Republic.

skip the lines at St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace

This ticket not only provides you with entry to explore the once-powerful home of Venice’s Doges, featuring the renowned golden Scala D’Oro staircase, but also access to some of the city’s most iconic religious sites. You can skip the line to enter the Basilica di San Marco, visit the museum inside, and access the rooftop terrace.

In addition, choose any three churches from the 18 Chorus Churches in Venice to visit, such as Santa Maria del Giglio (boasting exceptional artwork), San Stae, and Santo Stefano.

Craving more cultural experiences? Your all-access pass also covers admission to the Correr Museum, the National Archaeological Museum, and the Monumental Rooms of the Biblioteca Marciana.

And while you’re in the city, don’t miss the opportunity to view over 400 paintings and frescoes from the 18th and 19th centuries at the Querini Stampalia Foundation, located in the very heart of Venice!

Venice City Pass

This is the ideal Venice pass for every traveler to Venice. For starters, there isn’t just one pass. You can customize the itinerary to include museums, a gondola ride , vaporetti (water bus) rides, and so much more.

It’s essentially the same as the Venezia Unica pass but not issued by the city, so you can add things such as a gondola ride or a food tour.

You will need to book the date and time to enter sites such as the Doge’s Palace, so planning is essential. When your time is limited in Venice, this is the best way to do things. What you lose by not being spontaneous, you gain by making your time in Venice more manageable and relaxing.

use the Venice pass to book a gondola ride

What the Venice City Pass includes:

  • Gain priority access to the Basilica of San Marco , featuring the Pala D’Oro with its precious stones, rooftop terrace, and the San Marco museum
  • Fast track entrance to the Doge’s Palace
  • Explore three Piazza San Marco museums: Museo Correr, National Archaeological Museum, and Marciana National Library
  • Choose a classic Gondola Ride or opt for this combo ticket without it
  • Venice city tour app with audio guide included
  • Enjoy a 10% savings on select attractions and excursions

Venice Discovery Pass

Experience the best of Venice without the hassle of waiting in long ticket queues. Simply obtain your Venice Discovery Pass before your trip, and all you need is your phone to access the famous attractions!

  • Doge’s Palac e: Fast Track – Step back in time and delve into the history and culture of the City of Masks as you enter Doge’s Palace. Marvel at the opulent rooms adorned by the works of artists such as Titian, Veronese, Tiepolo, and Tintoretto. This ticket allows you to bypass the lengthy queue and enter quickly.
  • Public transport in Venice : 24 – 72 Hours – This convenient ticket provides unlimited access to the ‘vaporetti’ (water-buses) in Venice, Lido, and the lagoon islands, as well as buses in Mestre and Marghera. Choose from 24, 48, or 72-hour options.
  • Chorus Pass : Explore 15 of the most exceptional examples of sacred architecture in the city. Admire Tintoretto and Rubens’ paintings in the Church of Santa Maria del Giglio, and witness original Dominican structures, among others.
  • Alilaguna Boat Transfer from Venice Airport to Venice City : The one-way Alilaguna Boat Transfer is the ideal way to travel from Venice Marco Polo Airport to Venice city. Select any of the three boat lines connecting the airport to the city center, as well as Lido, Murano, and Rialto.
  • Welcome To Venice Self-Guided Audio Tour : Narrated by a local historian, this Venetian exploration uncovers the history of iconic architecture and delves into the culture as you stroll at your leisure. Venice discovery pass gets you to the city center from the airport

Venice Pass for Transportation

Getting around in Venice by vaporetto (Water Bus), water taxi, tram, or going to the various islands in the lagoon can be very expensive. For instance, a typical ticket for the vaporetto is 9.50 euro and lasts 75 minutes. This means that if you were to take the vaporetto from the train station to St. Mark’s Square, you would have to buy another ticket to take another one to another destination for an additional 9.50 euro.

save time with a water taxi

The water taxi from the airport to the historic center is an invigorating and exciting way to enter the city, but will also cost you over 100 euro.

Buying the various passes available for transportation is a good idea and will make your life much easier as well as save you some money.

There are different passes available that will suit your needs, so take a look below to find the right one for your length of time in Venice as well as your transportation needs.

ACTV Public transport card

What you get with a 1, 2, or 3 day pass:

  • Unlimited use of the public transportation services (ACTV vaporetti and buses) in the city of Venice
  • Unlimited use of the water-buses and buses in Lido, the lagoon islands, Mestre and Marghera
  • Unlimited use of train R and RV in the municipality of Venice (only if option 1 day Ticket + Trenitalia is selected)

N.B. I don’t recommend getting the 75 minute pass since it is exactly the same as the single trip ticket you can buy at any ticket machine for less money.

You can buy a pass at any of the vaporetto stops or at the ticket booths in front of the major sites like the train station and St Mark’s Square.

vaporetto ticket booth in front of train station

Water Taxi from Marco Polo Airport to Venice + ACTV 24 – 72-Hour Transport

When you are coming from the airport to get to the historic center, I highly recommend this Venice pass. It is convenient and saves a lot of money.

What the pass includes:

  • Unlimited use of the public transport (ACTV vaporetti and buses) in the city of Venice
  • Water taxi from Venice Airport to city center (shared transfer)
  • Luggage transfer

If you end up going to the beach or casino on the Lido, for instance, you will use the pass both for the vaporetto to get to the island and for the buses on the island to get around easily and quickly.

Alternatively, if you decide to head to Mestre for any reason, you can take one of the trams with the pass at no extra charge.

Chorus Pass

The Chorus Church Pass in Venice is a fantastic way to explore some of the most stunning churches in the city while saving money. With one pass, visitors can access 18 churches, including famous landmarks such as the Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, the Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo, and the Chiesa di San Giacomo di Rialto.

san trovaso, san marco. santa maria formosa

Aside from the cost savings, the Chorus Church Pass also offers other benefits. For instance, it allows visitors to bypass long lines at individual church entrances, as they can simply show their pass to gain entry. Better still, the pass lasts for a year from when you redeem it, meaning visitors can use it to explore the churches at their own pace over multiple days or even weeks.

Additionally, the Chorus Church Pass provides a rich cultural and historical experience, giving visitors the chance to admire exquisite artwork, intricate architecture, and learn about the history of each church, which spans over centuries. Buying a Chorus Church Pass is an excellent investment for anyone who wishes to explore the religious and cultural heritage of Venice while saving money and enjoying a hassle-free experience.

The Chorus Pass includes access to all of these important churches :

1 – Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari

One of the largest churches in Venice, the Frari is a must-see for art lovers with its collection of works by Titian, Bellini, and Donatello, among others. Don’t let the austere exterior fool you. The interior is as sumptuous as the exterior is plain.

2 – Church of Santa Maria del Giglio

This church, also known as Santa Maria Zobenigo, features a beautiful Baroque facade and interior with works by artists such as Tiepolo and Piazzetta.

3 – Church of Santo Stefano

A small, charming church in the San Marco district, Santo Stefano houses works by Tintoretto, Veronese, and Palma il Giovane.

4 – Church of Santa Maria Formosa

Built in the 15th century, this church has a unique exterior and features a collection of paintings by artists such as Bellini and Tintoretto.

5 – Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli

This church, often referred to as the “marble church,” boasts a stunning facade entirely covered in white and pink marble, with intricate sculptural details.

6 – Church of San Giovanni Elemosinario

A small but noteworthy church in the San Polo district, San Giovanni Elemosinario features works by Palma il Giovane and the Veronese brothers.

7 – Church of San Polo

Located in the heart of the San Polo district, this church features a striking Gothic facade and houses works by Tintoretto and Palma il Giovane.

8 – Church of San Giacomo dall’Orio

This church, located in the Santa Croce district, is a fine example of Venetian Gothic architecture and houses works by Palma il Giovane and Carpaccio.

9 – Church of San Stae

A grand Baroque church located in the Santa Croce district, San Stae features works by Tiepolo and a unique organ with 5,000 pipes.

10 – Church of Sant’Alvise

This church in the Cannaregio district is known for its striking facade and for housing works by the Venetian artist Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.

11 – Basilica of San Pietro di Castello

Once the cathedral of Venice, this basilica features a mix of architectural styles and houses works by artists such as Carpaccio and Tintoretto.

12 – Church of the Santissimo Redentore

A beautiful church located on the island of Giudecca, the Redentore was built as a thanksgiving for the end of the plague and features works by Paolo Veronese.

13 – Church of Santa Maria del Rosario

Also known as the Gesuati, this church in the Dorsoduro district features a grand Baroque facade and interior and houses works by Tiepolo and Tintoretto.

14 – Church of San Sebastiano

Decorated by Veronese with frescoes and canvases, this church is located in the Dorsoduro district and is known for its art collection and unique oval-shaped nave.

15 – Church of San Giobbe

This church in the Cannaregio district features a simple, elegant facade and houses works by Bellini, Titian, and Palma il Giovane.

16 – Church of San Giuseppe di Castello

Located on the island of San Pietro, this church is known for its impressive bell tower and for housing works by the Venetian artist Jacopo Tintoretto.

17 – Church of San Vidal

A small church located near the Accademia Bridge, San Vidal is known for its collection of musical instruments and for hosting classical music concerts.

18 – Church of San Giacomo di Rialto

This church in the San Polo district is believed to be the oldest church in Venice and is known for its simple facade and Byzantine-style interior.

Cost Savings: If you plan to visit several churches during your stay in Venice, the Chorus Venezia pass is a worthwhile investment. Without the pass, each of the listed churches charges €3 (US$3.30) for admission. Purchasing the pass is a good idea, as it allows you to visit at least five churches at a discounted rate. The more churches you visit, the more value the pass provides. You may not have time to see all 18 churches, but you have the option to see as many as you like.

Venice Museum Pass

Venice is a city steeped in history and culture, and its museums offer a fascinating glimpse into its rich past. From art to architecture, there’s something for everyone in the city’s many museums.

use the Venice museum pass to get into museo correr

Visiting the significant museums in Venice is a great way to immerse yourself in the city’s unique history and culture. Whether you’re an art lover , a history buff, or simply curious about this fascinating city, the museums of Venice are sure to leave a lasting impression.

The Venice Museum Pass is a fantastic value. Essentially you get the same experience as the Venezia Unica pass with skip the line entry to the Doge’s Palace, St. Mark’s Basilica and its museums, and the Museum Correr among others. In addition, you also get full access to all of the 18 participating churches of the Chorus Pass, as well as these other participating museums:

murano glass museum

  • Ca’ Rezzonico
  • Carlo Goldoni’s House
  • Mocenigo Palace
  • Ca’ Pesaro (Modern Art Gallery and Oriental Art Gallery)
  • Glass Museum (Murano)
  • Lace Museum (Burano)
  • Natural History Museum

If you plan to spend 3 days in Venice, then this provides excellent value. However, if you are only there for a day, there won’t be enough time to make this pass worth it.

Although you won’t get free entry into the non civic museums, there are often discounts. For instance, you will save around 40% off the ticket to enter the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.

N.B. If you order this online, which I recommend, you will need to exchange the voucher for a physical ticket at one of the tourist information offices around the city.

Here are the spots with opening hours where you can make the exchange:

  • Marco Polo Airport boat departure pier (open 7:45 AM – 12:00 PM)
  • Alilaguna Ticket Office, in front of Giardinetti Reali in San Marco (open 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM)
  • Alilaguna Ticket Office at the railway station (open 8:30 AM – 2:20 PM)
  • Tronchetto InterParking (open 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM)

Wrapping It Up

There are millions of tourists who leave Venice overwhelmed and exhausted, and, yet, they still didn’t scratch the surface of what the city offers. When you have a plan and strategy to visit the city, you get far more out of it.

Those that get passes are the ones who often leave feeling fulfilled and satisfied that they enjoyed the city to its fullest with the time they had.

Be one of those tourists who remembers the trip fondly and not one who wasted time in lines and paid too much for pretty much everything.

Venice Pass: prices, included visits & policy

This Venice city pass is very easy to use because it is exclusively electronic . You can arrange everything from the comfort of your own home, from purchasing to choosing the dates you would like to visit.

Venice Pass pricing

Unlike other passes in other major cities, the pricing system here is very easy to understand . As the pass is a package of tickets and other benefits received in advance, there is only a one-time price it and it only depends on the age of the person using it.

How it works

The pass can only be purchased online . You simply select the number of participants, their age range, and the dates and times for the various activities included. You will then receive all the tickets by email.

Doge's Palace in Venice

You will then need to present these tickets on site once in Venice , whether directly through your smartphone or if you prefer, by printing them out in advance.

When you receive your tickets by email, you will also receive a 10% discount code that enables you to benefit from a reduced price on a set of complementary activities to do in Venice (numerous museums, excursions to small islands on the lagoon, La Fenice opera house, etc.). You can also book them online.

Visits and activities included with this city pass

This city pass includes the must-see attractions for a first trip to Venice:

Doge's Palace

  • Saint Mark's Basilica
  • The Marciana National Library, in front of the Doge's Palace, which can be visited much like a museum . It houses important manuscripts.
  • The national archaeological museum, which houses collections of ancient sculptures, pottery, coins, etc... from different civilizations (Greek, Egyptian, etc...)
  • Access to an audio guide application of Venice, as well as another that provides insight on the Doge's Palace (POPGuide)

Validity period

There is no expiry date for this tourist card. As it is an online Venice pass, see it as a set of activities booked in advance . The good thing is that you can spread out your visits as you wish, without having to force yourself to group them all together within the same given time frame.

In addition, you should know that a 10% discount on other bookings is valid beyond the dates you booked for your included attractions. This means that you can take advantage of the Venice city pass for your entire stay .

Where to get your Venice Pass?

This city pass can only be found online, in the form of mobile applications and electronic tickets, so there is nothing you’ll need to pick-up once in Venice.

You will receive all your tickets by email , as well as the links to download the audio-guide applications, right after your purchase. As for the tickets, you will only have to present them once you get there, and the same applies for the mobile apps that can be used anywhere and anytime.

Venice Transport Pass: rates & policy

This pass is intended only for public transportation . Venice is actually very large, and between getting to the other islands on the lagoon (especially Murano and Burano), and the lengthy journeys back and forth, or even getting to and from the city of Mestre, you will be needing to use public transportation on a regular basis.

Canal in Venice

This Actv card gives you access to the city’s transportation network. Here is what it includes.

Venice Actv transport card pricing

The price structure is easy to understand. It only depends on the number of days you need it . Of course, the longer you plan to use the card, the more it costs. But on the other hand, the price decreases as the number of days increases.

The good news for families with young children is that transportation is free for children under 6 years old . You do not need to buy a card for them.

The Venice transport pass is a traditional type of card. Once you have it, you can use it to travel free of charge on all public transportation services covered by the card (vaporetto boats, buses in Venice, and suburban trains if you choose that option).

Considering a one-way ticket for a vaporetto boat ticket (7,50 €), and the distances to travel in Venice, this card quickly pays for itself . For example:

  • You will have to walk about 3 km from the train and bus stations to St. Mark’s Square, and even more to get to the Castello district, on the east side of the main island.
  • You will need to take a boat to get to the islands of Murano, Burano, and Lido

Modes of transportation included with the Actv card

Here is a list of modes of transport covered by the Venice pass:

  • Access to the vaporetto
  • Access to the Venetian ACTV bus network (transfer to the airport is not covered).
  • Access to R and RV trains around Venice, if this option is chosen at the time of purchase.

Please note: it does not cover transportation to Venice airports (Marco Polo and Treviso), either by bus or by boat (Alilaguna line).

How long is it valid?

This card is valid for the number of days (or rather hours) you choose when you buy it. Time is deducted starting the moment you use it for the first time (the first time you get on a vaporetto, train or bus).

The validity period is counted in hours. This means that if you activate a 2-day pass on Monday at 2pm, it can be used until Wednesday at 1:59pm. This is very practical because there is no need to check if it is cost-effective if you activate it at the end of the day.

Where to get a Venice transport card?

Since it is a printed card, it must be picked up in Venice. The most convenient pick-up points are the « Actv » kiosks found in most vaporetto stations . They can be recognized by the words « Actv » and « Biglietteria ». Simply go to one of these terminals and follow the instructions. You will then just have to scan the QR-code sent to you by email after your purchase to get your pass directly at the machine.

Gondolas on a canal in Venice

Another alternative is to go directly to the Actv office in Piazzale Roma. It is located right next to the bus station and about 500 meters from the Santa Lucia train station. It is open every day from 7am to 7:30pm.

Venice Discovery Pass

This city pass gives you the opportunity to enjoy the rich culture that Venice has to offer, combining access to public transportation with the Actv card detailed above.

Discovery pass pricing

The price depends on 2 factors: the user’s age and the duration of validity , i.e. 24, 48, or 72 hours.

You should consider the Venice pass as a package of several passes, each with its own special features. For example:

  • a ticket for the Doge’s Palace that grants access to other museums in the area
  • an Actv transport card , which provides free and unlimited use of vaporetto boats, ACTV buses, and some trains
  • the Chorus Pass , which grants access to a number of churches, namely the most famous ones.

As mentioned above , the transportation card pays for itself in no time since you’ll need to take a boat to get to some of the islands on the lagoon, yet also to travel long distances.

What is included in the Venice city pass

It covers everything you need for a trip to Venice oriented towards cultural visit s, with access to transportation as well. As you can see, no gondola rides provided!

Here is a list of what the pass includes:

  • Marco-Polo airport transfer (round trip), via the "Alilaguna" boat

A major advantage compared to the Actv card alone: it also covers transfers to and from the Marco Polo airport! This service is available by boat, via the « Alilaguna » line.

This is actually the same coverage as the Actv card , i.e. the number of consecutive hours of unlimited access to public transport. This can be determined at the time of purchase. It is either 24, 48 or 72 hours .

The card’s validity starts being counted the moment you use it for the first time.

Venice lagoon

For the rest:

  • the Chorus Pass is valid for one year, so there is no real limitation there
  • Other tickets dates are to be decided at the time of purchase. These are fast-pass (no line) tickets.

Where to get this city pass?

As it is a package, it can be picked up in installments. But don’t worry, it’s simple and non-binding!

  • The Actv card can be purchased in Venice at the « Actv » kiosks located at most vaporetto stations. We have given more details on this subject earlier in this guide.
  • The Chorus Pass card can be used when you visit a church, by showing the QR-Code obtained at the time of purchase.

As for the other tickets , you will receive everything by email . You will only have to show them when you get there. You will also get the link to download the audio-guide app included in this pass and accessible anywhere and anytime.

Which must-see attractions are included in Venice City Passes?

Depending on which one you choose, you can enjoy either all or only part of the main activities in Venice , from monuments to museums, transportation to gondolas. Here is a summary of the city’s must-sees along with the city passes that include them.

Doge's palace in Venice

Located on St. Mark's Square, the Doge's Palace is the historic residence of the Doge of Venice . The tour consists of exploring various rooms such as the apartments, a weapons room, etc... But also the prison, as well as the famous Bridge of Sighs that you can walk across. This monument is by far one of the most frequented places in the city , and having a ticket in advance with a city pass or a regular ticket is a must.

The Venice Pass

The Correr Museum

Located on St. Mark's Square, this art museum is one of the most prominent in Venice. It houses many works, including Venetian paintings, sculptures, but also period furniture.

Saint Mark's basilica in Venice

Saint Marc's Basilica

This basilica is one of the beauties of the square that bears the same name. Once inside, you can admire its dome and numerous golden mosaics . Entrance to the building is free but some parts are not free of charge such as the Saint Mark's museum (known for its sculptures of the horses of Saint Mark) and the Pala D'Oro (altarpiece in precious stones), or access to the terrace . The terrace offers a magnificent view of the entire square.

Gondola ride in Venice

Gondola boat ride through the canals

Apart from cultural visits, a gondola ride is a must-do activity when visiting Venice. The concept is to embark on a gondola and navigate along the Grand Canal and other small canals to see the city from a different angle. This activity is extremely popular despite the price .

Vaporetto in Venice

Taking a vaporetto boat

Taking a vaporetto is not necessarily an activity to be done in itself, but it is somewhat atypical and very much representative of Venice. It is the system of boats that cross the Grand Canal and connect it to the lagoon's main islands. It is the most common mode of transportation in Venice, and you will inevitably use it at one point during your stay.

ACTV Venice

This card gives you access to Venice's 15 main churches . The entrance to these churches is not free of charge. Among them: the church of Santa Maria del Giglio, known for its works by Rubens and Tintoretto, the Gesuati church with its 3 beautiful ceiling frescoes, and the Santa Maria del Giglio church.

Conclusion: which Venice Pass is best for my trip?

Before buying one or several city passes for Venice, it’s important to know beforehand if the visits and activities correspond with your interests. Here below is some advice and our opinio n for helping you choose which tourist card to buy when visiting Venice.

For easily enjoying cultural visits

If you plan on visiting Venice mainly for its general atmosphere and cultural attractions (main museums and churches), the Discovery Pass will suit you best.

It is the most comprehensive . It does not include a gondola ride, but if you want to do it, you can book this activity on your own.

In addition to sightseeing, the Discovery Pass gives you access to public transportation , which enables you to move around at your leisure, especially over long distances and to different islands located on the lagoon.

Venice Discovery Pass

The Venice Pass: for combining museums and gondolas!

Are you going to spend a few days in Venice but just want to stick to the main attractions and take nice little strolls around the city to discover it on your own?

If that’ s the case, the Venice Pass is the most relevant. You’ll be able to enjoy the must-see monuments: the Doge’s Palace (and surrounding museums), the fee-based attractions inside St. Mark’s Basilica , a gondola ride , and the mobile apps to discover Venice on your own.

And if you want to do an extra activity (or more), you can always take advantage of the pass’s 10% discount.

The Venice Pass

For transportation only: the Actv card

To get around Venice without worrying about the price of fares and saving yourself the hassle of buying them at the ticket booths, this transportation pass will come in handy. For a city the size of Venice, that requires long distances when traveling to and from the main island, a vaporetto boat is clearly a must .

Since this Venice pass is solely for transportation, you can combine it with a « Venice Digital Pass ».

Venice: Save on vaporetto tickets with a Tourist Travel Card

Jun 15, 2022

venice tourist travel cards

Transportation around Venice can be very expensive — and I’m not even talking about using water taxis, which have a pricing system (yikes!) of their own. I am talking about “public transportation,” which in Venice mostly means taking the vaporetti (water buses) up and down the Grand Canal .

A single trip on a vaporetto costs €7.50 (valid for 60 minutes), whether you take the boat for one stop or for a whole Grand Canal tour. Fortunately, there is a system designed for tourists that will help you save some serious money.

More Venice tips • 10 Things to do in Venice on the cheap • The most romantic hotels in Venice that won’t break the bank • Roll With It: Venice is not going to ban rolling bags

Tourist Travel Cards

In recent years ACTV (Venice’s bus and boat system) realized that they had to come up with a tourist transportation card, so they created several different types of “time-limited travelcard,” each valid for a different period of time.

Travel cards are available for:

1 Day: €21 2 Days: €30 3 Days: €40 7 Days: €60

There is also a three-day youth card (for people between 18-29 years old) that costs €28. (Prices are accurate as of June 2022. Visit the ACTV website for current prices.)

With these travel cards you can hop on and off any vaporetto (including those to the islands of Murano , Burano, and Torcello ) and on all buses traveling within the city of Venice (including to Mestre and Marco Polo Airport). These cards eliminate the need to queue every time to buy a ticket and to carry change with you.

The tickets are not exactly cheap, but considering you have unlimited use of the transport system, they are well worth it. Just think how much it would cost if you wanted to visit Murano-Burano and Torcello and you had to pay for every single trip!

To learn more about the tickets, including instructions on how to use them, check out this handy ACTV webpage in English .

Where to buy Tourist transportation tickets

You can buy these transport passes at any vaporetto stop (there are usually ticket offices at the stops, otherwise you can buy on board and they almost always speaks English), in Piazzale Roma (in the ACTV ticket office), or in any tobacco shop that displays the “ACTV” sign. Here’s a full list of ticket offices .

You can also buy them online .

Tip: Consider Venezia Unica City Pass

In 2009, the Comune di Venezia introduced a combined card, City Pass Venezia Unica , for transport, museums, parking, and even Wi-Fi connections and access to public toilets. The prices vary because you can create your custom combination, depending on your needs during your trip. However, you can save up to 30% on a variety of museum passes. The savings vary depending on the period (low season, high season, special events, etc.).

Unfortunately, the card can only be  purchased online and must be purchased more than two days before your arrival date in Venice. So the earlier you book it, the greater the saving. Since there is an initial cost just to buy the card, this pass is ideal for frequent visitors or those coming for a longer stay. For more information and to buy a card, visit the official website .

Hello Monica,

Thank you for your blog! I will be staying at the hilton in Mestre in april. I would like to experience the water taxi, as well as, travel to 3 islands Murano, Burano and Torcello. Do you recommend a particular ticket or pass? Also, what website do you suggest to purchase a ticket?

venice tourist travel cards

For the 1 Day Pass it says 21 euros on their website, but when you buy it, it’s actually 25

Hi Monica we will be Venice for a month Oct can we purchase a monthly travel pass both over 65

Monica Cesarato

To be able to purchase a monthly pass, you will need first a Venezia Unica Card, which will cost you 100 euro each and will allow you then to purchase the month pass at 37.00 euros each. to obtain it you need to go to the main ticket office in Piazzale Roma with your passport and the filled form. all info on the link beloew http://actv.avmspa.it/en/content/venezia-unica-city-pass-0

venice tourist travel cards

Hi, I am hoping someone can advise me. This article says that the 72 hour pass includes Marco Polo airport? However, the website says it does not and I cannot see an option to include this?

venice tourist travel cards

http://actv.avmspa.it/en/content/vaporetto

The information given on the above website included below states that

72 h 40 € BUY 7 days 60 € BUY

The time-limited travelcard is valid for all land and sea transport services!

and then says

• “Marco Polo” airport connections are not included in one way/single and/or time-limited tickets.

“MARCO POLO” Airport Connections – to and from! The complete offer at an additional 12 euros if one wants this service.

Is this in fact incorrect and the ticket for the week at 60 euros includes airport travel to Venice.

Additionally does this travel pass cover bus to Mirano, where we are staying?

Finally is there a concession rate for disabled people who are not wheelchair users?

venice tourist travel cards

Hi, Please can you tell me if a 3-day ticket is for three consecutive days, or could you skip a day and still use the ticket on your 4th day? And can you buy a 3day ticket at the airport? We have a water-taxi already arranged for our intitial arrival on Monday, so don’t need to include the price of that. Thanks. Going to Venice on Monday

Craig Nelson

Hi Ruth, I checked the Venice Vaporetto website and it looks like the tickets are good for consecutive days only. The tickets are good for 3 days “from the moment of validation.” I hope that helps. Have a fantastic trip!

venice tourist travel cards

I’ve been looking at the ACTV website for my parents and wanted to buy the 3 day plus airport transfer for their arrival but while reading the T&C’s I see that the vouchers must be changed for tickets before use..however, according to the website they do not change vouchers for tickets at the Marco Polo Airport. Can anyone offer advice? Thank you.

Hi I am currently age 29 and 7 months. Can I purchase three-day youth card?

venice tourist travel cards

We will be arriving at Trevsio airport on 16/03/2016, we are staying in Mestre for 4 days (3 nights) and wish to travel all around by public transport to see the sites. We have been advised to get a Line 8 bus to get near our hotel and walk from there. Will the weekly 7 day travelcard ticket that ACM Vencia sell allow us to get on the bus from there without having to purchase another ticket or will I have to buy another ticket on top of that? I cannot find this information written anywhere and need to budget for it.

venice tourist travel cards

We are travelling to Italy next week. Cycling from Bolzano to Mestre. We intend to move on to Venice for two more nights and have booked accommodation. My question is this:- Will a Tourist transit pass cover the bus from Mestre to Venice, vaporetti within Venice, and how about returning from Venice to Marco Polo airport? Will we have to buy a separate ticket and how long will the journey take? Thank you in advance. Cheers.

venice tourist travel cards

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!!

I have read numerous post and you are very kind to answer so many questions.

I am wondering if the prices are the same if you buy them online or from a machine? We leave for Europe on Friday and will be arriving into S Lucia at 10 PM a few days later – My concern was picking up the tickets if I purchased online.

Also, we are flying out on Ryanair – I read this is a smaller airport that is about 19K away and one should allow 90 minutes for travel. Since it is a smaller airport o you know if it is necessary to arrive 2 hours before our flight to Barcelona?

THANK YOU AGAIN!!

venice tourist travel cards

How many hours will the Vaporetto 1 day pass last? Is it based on a 12hours basis or 24hours basis? So if I were to purchase a 1 day Vaporetto Day pass and validate it at 11am on a Monday, the expiry for the day pass will be when? Thank you.

venice tourist travel cards

11:00 am on the Tuesday. It’s 24 hours from the moment you first validate it.

venice tourist travel cards

Beware the airport ticket office scam – they will try to sell you a separate ticket for transportation by bus from Marco Polo airport to Roma Square bus station in Venice. It costs 8 euros each way, I think. THIS IS NOT NECESSARY!! They know very well that the ACTV swipe card is valid on the normal service bus (Line 5) and no further ticket is necessary. It is shameful ……

Hello My husband & I will be arriving by train into Santa Lucia from Santa Mestre station on 23 May leaving 24May 2015. We plan to see San Marco( St. Marks, Doges Palace, Florian, Gondola Ride( Santa Maria del Giglio Square- Center Venice) as well as Murano/ Burano/ Torcello. Can you please tell us the best unlimited pass for our stay?? We are staying across from Mestre Station. Thank you so much! Robert & Debra

You might want to get the two day pass, depending on if you arrive in the morning of the 23rd and leave on the afternoon of the 24th. This will give you unlimited access to all Venice public transportation, including the ferries.

Why don’t you get a 72 hours card? It is valid for 72 hours from the moment you validate it!

venice tourist travel cards

Hi, I need help. I will be reaching Venice on 31st July by marco polo airport and then we will take train to florence. We will return to Venice on 1st Aug and stay there for two days. We have return flight on 2nd Aug night. I was planning to buy 36 hour pass for Venice along with airport transfer. But since I need airport transfers on 31st and 2nd Aug but Venice card for 1st and 2nd Aug, is it possible to get this. Please help.

venice tourist travel cards

Ciao Monica,

I’m travelling to Venice from 26 Oct till 2 Nov with my husband and three children. We will need a travel pass for 8 consecutive days. I worked out that if we buy a 7-day ACTV travel card for 50€ and we add 7€ for one vaporetto trip to the station the last day, that’s a total of 57€ per person.

But then I saw that you can buy a monthly pass for 30€ for the vaporetti only (we don’t need buses anyway). These passes seem to be valid from 1st day to last day of the month – so we could use them from 26-31 Oct, and even with a couple of extra tickets, this would work out cheaper that the 7-day travel card.

So my questions are: can anyone buy a monthly travel card or do you need to be a resident? Do you need a photo? And can you still buy a monthly card on 26th of the month? Can you buy it upon arrival at Santa Lucia railway station?

Grazie mille!

MONICA . I know you must have answered the question a thousand times. arriving at Marco pola , there is an automated machine selling ACTV TICKETS. I assume i can buy a 2 day travel pass here ? now i am travelling with my children ages 11 and 15 , do i buy them the normal 30 Euro pass same as an adult ? as there is no mention of children below 18.? with the ACTV Pass i should be able to use transport from the airport bus onwards?

venice tourist travel cards

Thank you very much, Monica! You are very kind taking the time to answer all us tourist 🙂 Kind regards, Gergana

It gives unlimited travel on any public transport (bus and vaporetto) in the municipality of Venice (it means the city, Mestre and all the islands , even the Lido).

I would like to ask if the 7day ACTV pass is valid also from and to Lido. The description states “getting around Venice and the islands Murano, Burano and Torcello”. Thank you in advance!

1- you cannot use the rolling card, the card is only valid for people under 29.

2- you can go to http://www.veniceconnected.com and buy a 3 days pass which will cover all transport in Venice (including all the islands of murano, Burano, Torcello) and all water buses in Venice

3- The trip from Mirano to Venice is not covered, Mirano is about 20 km from Venice.

venice tourist travel cards

My decade-long vaporetto experience is as follows: 1.Cards and passes are NOT available at every stop, only the major stops that have ticket booths, which are separate from the embarcaderi (landing stages). 2. Where there is no booth you must buy a ticket aboard, and seek out the agent yourself right away. If HE has to come to YOU, you risk a whopping fine. 3. The longer the pass the better the deal; you’ll use it more. 4. For time-based passes (12 hrs to one week) bought in Venice not online, the clock starts when you first USE the pass; thereafter you ‘validates’ it at the machine for each trip. 4. If you buy a short-duration pass, plan your voyaging to fit within the hours allotted. 5. Also consider walking. Venice is amazingly small. 6. Avoid the No. 1 vaporetto whenever possible, especially to/from Pzle Roma and the train station: it’s the most crowded, the most uncomfortable and the slowest. So locate your lodgings on Google Maps, then go to the ACTV site and find the stop that’s closest. Often enough it’s on a faster, less-crowded boat. 7. By close scrutiny of Google’s Venice or other map you can often find a simpler route to/from your lodgings–one that will avoid as many bridges as possible. You’ll want to do that if you’ve got luggage, and most people I see in Venice are hauling staggering amounts of the stuff. I always bring my folding kayak to Venice; it’s quite a load. So one year while renting behind Santa Maria Formosa I was able to find a boat that would stop at Ospedale and a route from there (I dubbed it the Few Bridges Road) that required only 2 canal crossings. 8. If there’s any time left on your pass when you leave, give it to an incoming tourist. 9. The traghetti that cross the Grand Canal are officially six or so in number, but a couple seem to operate but seldom and all, I think, shut down at 1830. Last fare I paid was I euro. If you have sea legs, stand up, as Venetians do. 10. There are two airports buses. One the yellow cheap city bus; it makes multi stops en route. The other is blue private and nonstop. It costs twice as much as the yellow, but heavy luggage and the need for speed can make it worthwhile. I use the blue bus coming in because I can go direct from the arrivals hall to the bus, buy a ticket and be on my way in a few minutes. Buying tix for the yellow bus can involved interminable waits on endless lines. Suppose two Airbus380s arrive simultaneously? You’re dead, that’s what. 11. Monica makes a good analogy: the pass is like a cheap non-refundable air ticket; use it or lose it.

Special to Emanuel: Don’t worry about being suspected of cheating on the bus. Just show your pass to the machine to let everyone know you’re making the effort. I haven’t run into this problem–or maybe I just haven’t noticed because I wave the pass and move on. The inspectors probably know all about this, and if they stop you, looking at your pass will show that it’s still valid and the fault is with the machine. If anything, at least a few passengers will think you’re an amateur: after, cheating ACTV is a hobby and a sport for many Venetians.

Special to Gerry: Somehow your request got lost in the blizzard of misunderstandings re various vaporetto cards. Fortunately the peerless Monica has got it all cleared up. Anyway, in case there’s still time: skip the expensive Grand Canal tour; the No. 1 vaporetto will take you from train/bus arrival to St. Mark’s at a slow pace, giving you time to see everything from the boat itself exc. the Bridge of Sighs, which is just a few feet to the right of the landing stage. Your hotel is undoubtedly NOT 10 minutes away on foot especially for first-timers, more especially for those encumbered with luggage. So: after clearing customs and immigration, go into the arrivals hall and turn left to find the ACTV bus/vaporetto ticket booth. If there’s a long line then just go out the front and buy a ticket on the blue bus. Arriving at Pzle Roma go to the vaporetto area; from the top of the stairs you’ll be able to see several landing stages and ticket booths. Pick the booth besieged by the smallest mob–it’s usually one well off to the left–and buy your pass there.

Thank you Moinica for your time and valuable suggestions. My wife and I have used the Venice Tourist Travel Card (x 7 days). I must admit we found it very useful and we used it a great deal. It saves you money considering that a each trip on the vaporetto would have cost us Euro 14. My only complain is that while we did not have any problem validating our tickets on the vaporetto IMOB scanner we had problem validating them on the bus as the scanner would not read them. I went to the Hellovenezia Office and was told that I had nothing to worry about as the tickets were also valid for the buses and that it was a problem of the validating machines on the Venezia buses. I was also told that this was a common problem for the Venezia travel cards bougt online. Our only concern was that we felt embarassed that people on the bus might think we were evading the ticket cost of the bus. I hope that the ACTV company would look into this and have those IMOB scanners on the buses properly adjusted.

🙂 Thank you so much Susie Mort, it’s always a pleasure to help people, above all when it comes down to give Venice back its good name!

Monica deserves much praise for her time and patience-the english idiom would be “she deserves a medal” Bravo Monica

Dear Monica,

Thank you for your most exhaustive answer.

Emmanuel Mazzitelli

Don’t worry, us locals have the same problems too with our monthly tickets! ACTV knows about it but they have not done anything about it! You know you paid for the ticket, so do not worry about what others might think!

This is the text on the Terms and Condition page of http://www.veniceocnnected.com

” Right of withdrawal

The user acknowledges that venice>connected offers services that cannot be considered “tourist packages” under and by the operation of Consumer Law, but must instead be understood as public transport and associated recreational services, to be performed on a given date or during a specific period. Therefore, the user accepts and acknowledges that following the conclusion of the contract, he or she cannot exercise any right of withdrawal as the circumstances whereby such a right can be excluded, pursuant to article 55, subsection 1, letter b) of the Consumer Law are deemed to apply.”

from this I understand that it works like a standard cheap airline ticket if you cancel, you loose your money. Therefore it is better to book a few days before arrival, rather than a long time ahead. In any case if you take out travel insurance, i assume this will be covered, but you better check first with the travel insurance.

Regards Monica

Hi Monica I have one question for you. What happens if say you order two 7 days transport cards (which would cost Euro 100) online and eventually cancel your trip? Will the cost of the tickets be refunded, that is will the money be credited to your credit card?

I am tryingto purchase 3 ACTV/vaporetto passes for 72 hours (39 euro) for Venice and one rolling venice card so that my 17 year old can buy a fourth 72 hour card for 18 euro. Can you help me with this? (We have one child who is 17 and the other child is 10, I dont think there s a discount for him, correct? So I would like to puchase 3 regular and one student. My email is [email protected]

http://www.veniceconnected.com/node/1454 to buy your 72 hours card. I am pretty sure you cannot buy the rolling card for your17 year old, you must do that in Venice tickets office in Piazzale Roma or Saint Marks Square in person, cause you must show the passport. regards Monica

Monica, I’ve visited Venice annually for the last 4 years for a week to 11 days and have always bought ACTV passes to cover the time of my visit. I have always been told–and found it to be true–that the clock starts NOT when you buy or pick up the pass but when you first USE it. That is, when you first ‘validate’ it by holding it up against the middle of the little iMOB box that is prominently displayed at every vaporetto stop (resulting in a BEEP and a green light–and a red light when your time has expired. The ACTV pass also covers the Marco Polo airport bus (the bright yellow No 5; don’t know about Treviso). I think the bus validation is at a box on board but I’m fuzzy on that detail because lately I’ve used the blue bus that stops right in front of the No 5 at the airport (don’t recall its name or company)–5 euros one way, 9 r/t. Worth it for me because it’s a fast nonstop, has luggage stowage underneath (which I usually need) and because you can buy tickets from a machine at the bus stop rather than wait on the long line for ACTV tix in the terminal. The machine takes bills in a little poorly marked slot at the bottom. Then I buy my ACTV pass at the boat stop off Piazzale Roma.

The blue bus TO MArco Polo is also good insurance because it travels on a main road. Two years ago my wife was on a No. 5 that was held up for several hours by a demonstration: streets were blockaded after a pedestrian was run down by a reckless driver. The whole busload missed their flights.

Shun the Alilaguna boats: it’s a long hike from terminal to boarding; it’s very expensive; and it’s very slow. Also, Alilaguna’s free tours may be included but noo one needs a tour of Murano, Burano and Torcello.

I use caffe toilets exclusively, always buying something at the small ones owned by individuals rather the the big ones that belong to corporations.

There are 2 left-luggage offices–deposito bagagli. One in the train station is expensive and slow; the one at the back of Piazzale Roma is cheap and quick. Can’t recall the name but it’s opposite where the buses make the turn INTO Pzle Roma.

It’s odd to see people saying that ‘don’t know where that street is.’ Yeesh: if they can find this website surely they can find Google Maps? This is important because not knowing your hotel’s exact location can cost you a fortune. This last trip I ran into a couple who paid a crippling sum for a water taxi to the Palazzo Giovanelli, a hotel on the Grand Canal, because they didn’t know vaporetto No. 1 stops at San Stae–about 100 feet away.

Maps? All maps of Venice are bad and some are worse. Expect to get lost and learn to enjoy it.

I read on venice connected – that children under 6 can use vaparetto with 2 paying adults. Do they really know if someone is under six = maybe that just turned six with 4 paying adults?

as far as I know you can buy al card online in one go and you can definetely share the toilte pass. To be honest though i would not buy the toilet pass. use toilets in bars, it is free as long as you get something from the bar, ciaooo

Right on. regards Monica

Connected Card, Online Purchase Questions:

1. Should I book each persons card separately? 2. Can the public restroom passes be shared? (If I buy 10 passes, can I use 5 and my wife use the other five.) Or must I buy each person a card?

As far as I know you can only buy the rolling card from the Hello Venezia offices in Venice (Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto, San Marco, Santa Lucia train station) and via Verdi is far away from the train station.

you cannot book ahead, because you need to show the rolling card when you purchase it. You will have to purchase all from the tickets offices in Venice, sorry

venice tourist travel cards

thanks alot for your reply. So, as far as I understood, I can buy the rolling card and a 3 day transport card from the same office, say in Piazzale Roma… is that right? and the price will be 4+18=22 euro?

1. Is it possible to buy Rolling Venice Card in Mestre (somewhere near the train station)? I have tried to look it up on hellovenezia site, but the only ticket office in Mestre seems to be Mestre Via Verdi ( I have no idea where it is located!).

2. Then if I want to get a 3 day transport card (for 18 euro), can i book it ahead or it can only be bought after purchasing Rolling Venice card when in Venice?

Thanks in advance, Natalia

venice tourist travel cards

I will be arriving in Venice by the 10:40 pm train from Milan, Can you please advise the following: 1, Do the water buses operate 24 hours? If not, from what time to what time? 2. Where can I buy water bus ticket at that time of night? 3. If I buy on-line, will the computer printout be acceptable by the water bus operator or do I have to exchange it for tickets? And if required, where can it be exchanged at that time of night (around 11pm)? Thanks in anticipation M.Masood

venice tourist travel cards

Could you tell me, please, whether the Venice Connected card for the vaporetto also covers the bus to and from Treviso Airport? Coming in October, by which time Treviso will be open again! Many thanks

I am sorry to say the children will have to pay full price like adults, only children under 1 metre do not pay, so very very small children

venice tourist travel cards

Do children travel free? till what age? i am travelling with my 10 and 15 year old nieces. What is the best travel card for them?

venice tourist travel cards

I did purchase the vaporetto pass online prior to arrival. I found out when I went to pick it up that their computers were down, they sent me to a self serve machine down the road, very difficult to understand, went back to the Pavillion, and was told (wrongly) how to use it. Went back again, and the very ticked off person who worked at the Pavillion finally went with me, begrudgingly. She states she was not angry with me, although she acted angry with me, she was angry because “this happens all the time”. Not worth the savings to me. Next time I will purchase my pass when I get there.

1- If you buy the card on line you will get a reference number whic you must print and when you get to Venice you have to go to the Venice Connected office with that reference number and they will give you your ticket/card (see my previous comments) 2- The card starts running from the moment you collect it at the office in Venice (see my previous comments)

1. If I buy Veniceconnected card online, will I download it from my home computer or do I pick it up in Venice when I arrive? 2. If I buy this card on my computer before I leave home, will the clock start to run at time of online purchase? Thanks

Does the line#1 and line#2 vaporetto run 24 hours? If not, from what time to what time does it run?

venice tourist travel cards

Is there any discount for the transport card for an 11-year old child available?

The Venice connected can only be booked online. The normal transport card (no discount) can be bought at any tabaconist which sells ACTv tockets and at any ACTv office and at any vaporetto stops. The rolling card can only be bought in piazzale Roma at the Hello Venezia shop.

venice tourist travel cards

Thanks again for your reply. I suppose we will get the card in Venice itself, due to the ash could problem in Europe. Can you let me if we can get the cards (Venice connected and rolling Venice) at Piazzale Roma or any tobacco shops with ‘ACTV’ signs.

The Veniceconnected card is the ACTV card which can/must be bought in advance to get a discount on it. The rolling card is a card which can be purchased only for people 14-29, it cost 4 euro and allows the poeple who purchase it to get a 3 day youth card for 18 euros which cover the vaporetti and buses. So people who are 14-29 can use a 3 day transport card at the total cost of euro 22 (rolling card + transport card)

venice tourist travel cards

I think I have identified a problem of definitions. Monica, would you please chech this for us. Valid means you can use it. Cards identifies for a number of hours are valid when you buy them; you can use the at once or later. Cards identified by days are valid only for those days, measured midnight to midnight. Cards identified for hours, are valid when you buy them, and their starting time is established when you first use them by “Authenticating” them at the machine on the dock or in the bus. That starts the clock for their use, and their validity will expire the set number of hours later. Monica, please confirm or correct. ===gm===

Thanks , the post are really very helpful. Can you let me if the actv travel cards and venice connected cards are the same. Also with which card can I combine the Rolling venice card.

I am not sure people are actually reading what I write here!!!

1- If you purchase the card on Veniceconnected it is the same card you can buy at the vaporetto in Venice, but by buying it online on their official site you get a discount on the normal price (the price you will pay if you purchase it when you are in Venice) that can arrive up to 25% off if you buy it in advance of a certain amount of days and according to which season you are visiting Venice. Example if a 48 hours card will cost you euro 28.00 if you purchase it in Venice, it will cost you less if you buy it online. It is exactly the same card, but by buying online it is cheaper!

2- The card is valid from the moment you pick it up from the Veniceconnected point. Read my previous post! It is valid 12-24-36-48-72 ot 7 days, according to which one you have purchased. So if you buy a 24 h card and you pick it up at 3pm, it will be valid until 3pm of the day after and so on!

I know the Veniceconnected site is not clear ( I told them), but it seemed I cleared the validity of the card on my previous post!

Ciao a tutti monica

“Signals Off”. I just visited VeniceConnected and the seven day and 72 hour cards are valid from “the time you get them”, so don’t buy ahead of time. It did not say how they count days on the seven day card, but hours are hours and that is clear. I searched for the rules I remember seeing and got a “Page Not Found”. Ditto for hellovenezia.

When I bought my seven day card last Fall, I was advised to keep the receipt in case I was challenged. At the time the card did not have to be validated. I hope the people who check tickes are told what we are told. ===gm===

venice tourist travel cards

That was really helpfull Monica – many thanks. Very kind of you.

Ok, I have called VeniceConnected myself on +39 0412424 and this is what they explained:

The card is valid from the moment it is picked up from the VeniceConnected Pick up point. So if you have a 72h card and you pick it up at 10.00 am it is valid from that moment for 72 hours or whatever period you have purchased it for.

I agree that the rules are not clear and I have told them they should put this info on their site. Whether they will implement my comment or not, I do not know.

I hope I cleared all doubts

Hi Monica. Well, that’s the thing – there is no exact expiry date. There is only the start date and the number of hours you buy it for. And the big question is when this 72-h count starts. If it automatically starts at 00:01 am on 1 May regardless when you actually pick it up and start using it on that day (maybe not before 6 pm), then it will expire at 11:59 pm on 3 May. If the time does not start until you validate the card on 1 May (let’s say 6 pm), then it should be active until 6 pm on 4 May. And this makes difference. The rules on the http://www.veniceconnected.com are unfortunately not very clear if not tricky. But thanks anyway.

I would avoid saying “tourist card”; Better be specific and say how you bought it. I got seven day transport card ahead of time on VeniceConnected and lost half a day because it starts at midnight. For rules see VeniceConnected.com and Actv’s websit. You might just as well but at any vaporetto stop. ===gm===

As far as I know it is valid from the first moment you use it, since you have to validate it through a machine. So if you pick a 72 H card at 8 am but only start using it at 2 pm, the card will be valid until 2pm of the day it was supposed to expire. And it does work 24 hours a day, for all the period you book. There are no time limits. If you have any queries you can write directly to http://www.veniceconnected.com and I am sure they will be happy to answer all your questions.

Hi Monica, could you please specify when the card becomes active? I mean when this hour-count actually starts? If I order a 72-hour card starting from 1 May and I pick it up on that day and I validate it let’s say around 2pm, does it mean that the card will be active until 2 pm on 4 May? Or is it timed from midnight to midnight as it says in the post above? In this case I would only be able to use it on 1, 2 and 3 May but not on 4 May. Many thanks for your reply in advance.

venice tourist travel cards

I bought a tourist card and I didnt have any problems with it. We didnt buy it until two days into our 10 day stay and we used it all the time. We didnt have to wait to pick it up either. We purchased ous at the bus stop in Rialto. the only thing I wish we knew we could have used it for the buses also!! we might have ventured inland a bit!! I thought it was worth every penny!!! Those valporetto tickets are expensive for tourists!!!

The card is not a scam, it is organised by Venice city. The tickets are valid 24 hours a day. it is true they cannot be picked up before the day they start, but that is due to some logistical reasons to do with the booking system.

The pick-up point are well indicated in their website (so you can see where you can get them before booking) and they are at Marco Polo airport, at Piazzale Roma, At tronchetto and in San Marco. So if you arrive by plane you can collect it at the airport, if you arrive by train you go to Piazzale roma.

There is no cheaper option, the tickets are the same as those that you can buy on site when you arrive, but by booking in advance you get them discounted of up to 25% according to the period you are arriving and the days in advance you are booking. ciao Monica

Thomas Meyers

Do you really think it’s a “scam”? I just returned from one week in Venice and wish that I had booked one of these. As it was, I paid 13 euros to get to and from the airport (26 total), plus multiple journeys up and down the canal for 6.50 each. So, I spent almost 50 euros on just a handful of trips on the vaporetti. Had I purchased a one-week pass, it would have cost the same and I would certainly have used the vaporetti more often (and saved some serious energy). I would have probably also headed to the islands.

As for cheaper tickets, it’s true that you can take a small “traghetti” to cross the Grand Canal. Those boats just shoot straight across the canal — not up and down it, and they only cost 50 cents. (The trip usually takes just a minute or two.) I took one of those and quite enjoyed it. It was a sort of “cheapo” gondola ride.

Thanks, Tom

The VeniceConnected transport ticket is a bit of a scam to be avoided. They are timed from midnight to midnight and may not be picked up before the date they start, As a result, unless you are within walking didtance of a pick-up point, you have to pay for a full fare trip to get it. And watch out; make no mistakes when ordering; they make no adjustments. Also, I have been told that there is a cheaper ‘one-way’ ticket, but I don’t know the details. The website said “Contact Us”, but they did not reoly to my questions. ===gm===

venice tourist travel cards

Advice is not to buy passes in advance via Venice Connected. Jusy buy when you get to airport and are sur of your dates an times.

I have had a very difficult experience in which they would not change the dates and refused a refund. I had to buy 4 x 72 hour passes again. They might be within their contractual rights but is it good customer service to take money for nothing? They know the original tickets were not printed.

T he ticket prices listed in the fare tables below are for Venice's water transit network, which includes the historic center and islands such as Murano, Burano, and the Lido di Venezia. (Venice also has a land bus network that serves car-friendly districts on the mainland and the Lido.)

For tips on where and how to obtain tickets on Venice's public transportation, see our articles about Buying Vaporetto Tickets and ACTV Ticket Machines .

Finally, don't miss our " Important things to know " right after the fare tables.

Venice Fare Tables

Important things to know:

You must validate tickets before use. Look for the white electronic card reader near the walkway that leads to the floating vaporetto platform. (Some stations also have green card readers that cannot be used to validate tickets.) Hold your ticket within 6 cm (about 2.5 inches) of the circular panel for three seconds, or until you see a green light and hear a beep. At some stops, a gate or turnstile will open when you validate your ticket.

If you're at a vaporetto stop without a ticket counter or machine, buy a ticket from the boat conductor as you board to avoid a fine. On land, purchase bus/tram/People Mover tickets at ticket machines, Hellovenezia/ACTV offices, newsstands, or tobacco shops (look for a blue sign with a white "T"). Warning: We've had reports of ticket inspectors ignoring the ACTV's published policy and fining tourists who tried to buy tickets upon boarding, so we strongly recommend going out of your way to buy a ticket on land to avoid ripoffs.

An ordinary single waterbus ticket is good for 75 minutes in one direction, which means you can transfer as long as you aren't headed back toward your starting point.

On water buses, you're allowed to carry one piece of luggage with a combined length, width, and height of 150 cm (60 inches) or less, plus a smaller backpack, purse, or other personal item. For more luggage, or for a bigger bag, you may need to pay a supplement. Ask the agent in the ticket booth or the boat conductor as you board.

Our best money-saving tip:

  • Venice is a compact and walkable city, and you shouldn't need to use the vaporetto often unless you have trouble walking, are pressed for time, or are going to an island (such as the Lido or Murano) outside the historic center. Our advice: Walk when you can , and organize your schedule to make the most efficient use of a tourist travel card.

For more fare information--including conference cards, football tickets, and other special fares--please see the English-language pages at the Web site of ACTV, Venice's transit authority.

If you'll be using land-based public transportation, see:
