2009-2020 Dodge Journey Towing Capacity Resource Guide With Charts!

2009-2020 Dodge Journey Towing Capacity Resource Guide With Charts!

The Dodge Journey is a nice little car or crossover SUV, whatever you want to call it, but I was actually surprised at their towing capacity and the fact that they had any whatsoever and to be honest was shocked to see some of the numbers that I saw when I was doing the research.

In this article, I look into how much they can actually pull and have included model years 2009 to 2020, so I can encompass all of the vehicles possible in one (easy-to-read) post. I hope this article helps somebody out there who may be wondering about their specific capacity specs for their Journey. Let's dive in!

Overview of the Data For the Dodge Journeys:

Engine Choices: Over the years, from 2009 to 2020, the Dodge Journey had four different engines to choose from and the engine you had equipped affected the capacity numbers somewhat but not as much as some other factors like: the number of people that were in the vehicle and whether you had the trailer tow prep package installed.

The engines I came across were: the 2.4 liter engine, the 3.5 liter engine, the 3.6 liter engine and the 2.7L engine. I wanted to break down the data even further and give weight rating ranges based on the four different engine options.

  • 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010 and 2009 Journeys that used the 2.4L engine had a towing capacity of up to 1,000 lbs.
  • 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012 and 2011 Journeys that used the 3.6L engine had a towing capacity of 1,500-2,500 lbs.
  • 2010 and 2009 Journeys that had the 3.5L engine had a towing capacity of 2,500-3,500 lbs. (with trailer package) and 1,000-2,000 lbs. (w/o package)
  • 2009 Journeys that had the 2.7L engine had a towing capacity of 1,000-3,000 lbs. (with trailer package) and 1,000-2,000 lbs. (w/o package)

The Trim Levels: Looking at the different trim levels proved to be quite challenging, as there were some trim levels that only appeared for a handful of years, while others were prominent for most of the life of the vehicle.

The trim level did not have a direct effect on the trailer weight ratings, but they did have limited engine options available to them, in some cases which indirectly affected the numbers

I broke down the different trim levels that were available and listed their respective towing capacity based on Dodge's specs:

  • 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2015 SE (2.4l) : 1,000 lbs.
  • 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2015 SE (3.6l) : 1,500-2,500 lbs.
  • 2014, 2013, 2012, 2010 and 2009 SE (2.4l) : 1,000 lbs.
  • 2020 Crossroad (2.4l) : 1,000 lbs.
  • 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2015 Crossroad (3.6l) : 1,500-2,500 lbs.
  • 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, and 2013 SXT (2.4l) : 1,000 lbs.
  • 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013 and 2012 SXT (3.6l) : 1,500-2,500 lbs.
  • 2010 and 2009 SXT (3.5l) : 1,000-3,500 lbs.
  • 2019, 2018 and 2017 GT (3.6l) : 1,500-2,500 lbs.
  • 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013 and 2012 RT (3.6l) : 1,500-2,500 lbs.
  • 2010 and 2009 RT (3.5l) : 1,000-3,500 lbs.
  • 2015 and 2014 Limited (3.6l) : 1,500-2,500 lbs.
  • 2015, 2014, 2013 and 2012 AVP (2.4l) : 1,000 lbs.
  • 2015 AVP (3.6l) : 1,500-2,500 lbs.
  • 2011 Express (2.4l) : 1,000 lbs.
  • 2011 Mainstreet, Crew and Lux (3.6l) : 1,500-2,500 lbs.

The Number Of People In The Vehicle: Another major factor that affected the ratings for these CUVs was how many passengers you were carrying in the vehicle. This seemed to affect the capacity quite a bit.

In fact, I noticed that 1,000 pounds (or more in some cases) was the “average”  difference between having one to two people in the car and six or seven people in the car.

Overall Tow Capacity: When you look at the models that were made from 2009 to 2020 you'll see that the overall capacity didn't really range all that much and stayed pretty consistent over the years.

The 2020-2009 Dodge Journey had a towing capacity range of 1,000-3,500 lbs., depending on the model year, the engine equipped, how many people you had riding in the vehicle with you and whether you had the trailer tow prep package installed on the vehicle.

Remember to always read through the owner's manuals completely before you tow anything, as there might be additional information that I did not post in this article that may be helpful to you.

In this post you might see one tow chart for many different model years and this is because the chart is exactly the same or very similar (with minor discrepancies) but the information was close enough to only post that one chart that will apply to all model years listed.

2020 Models:

The 2020 Journey had a towing capacity of up to 1,000 pounds, but it included five people in the vehicle and any luggage and cargo they had, which was a predetermined weight for each person, I assume.

Usually the assumed weight of each passenger is around 150 pounds, so if that was the case in this example, then 5 people in the vehicle would equate to 750 pounds of total weight, plus the weight of additional luggage for each passenger, whic is usually around 20-30 pounds per person.

I don't think you can get more capacity out of the vehicle by having fewer than five people either and I would assume that the rating would still be the same if only 1 or 2 people were in the vehicle.

2020 Dodge Journey Towing Chart

2011-2019 Models:

Dodge Journeys made from 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 had a towing capacity of 1,000-2,500 pounds, depending on which engine you had equipped and how many people were in the vehicle.

If you look at the chart below you can see that the 2.4L engine had the lowest rating in the chart of 1,000 lbs., which includes up to five passengers in the vehicle with additional cargo weight included in that capacity.

The 3.6L engine had a tow capacity that ranged from 1,500 lbs. and went all the way up to 2,500 lbs. and the number of people in the vehicle was the determining factor in the weight range numbers.

2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012 and 2011 Dodge Journey Towing Chart

2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012 and 2011 Charts

2010 Models:

The 2010 models had their own unique table, mainly due to the fact that they had two different engine configurations: the 2.4L engine and the 3.5L engine.

The towing capacity for the 2010 Journey ranged from 1,000-3,500 lbs., depending on the engine equipped and if you had the 3.5L engine, whether you had a trailer tow prep package installed.

As you can see from the 2010 tow chart below, the 2.4L engine had the lowest capacity rating, coming in right at 1,000 pounds and the 3.5L engine (without the trailer tow prep package) had a range of 1,000 pounds to 2,000 pounds.

If you had the 3.5L engine with the trailer tow prep package installed then the weight limits were much higher, ranging from 2,500 pounds, going all the way up to 3,500 pounds, which is nearly double the overall capacity.

2010 Dodge Journey Towing Chart 2

2009 Models:

The 2009 models had three different engine configurations to choose from: the 2.4 liter engine, the 2.7 liter engine and the 3.5 liter engine, which made the table a little bit harder to understand than the other model years we looked at already.

The towing capacity for the 2009 Dodge Journey's ranged from 1,000 lbs. - 3,500 lbs., depending on the engine you had equipped, how many people were in the vehicle and whether or not your vehicle had a trailer tow prep package installed.

If you look at the chart below you'll notice that without the trailer tow prep package installed AND no matter which engine you had equipped, the trailer weight ratings is significantly decreased, ranging from 1,000 lbs. and only going up to 2,000 pounds.

In contrast, if you compare those specs with the specs of the 2.7L engine and 3.5L engine with a trailer tow prep package equipped then you can see the range is a lot higher, starting at 1,000 lbs. and going all the way up to 3,500 lbs., dependent upon how many people you had in the vehicle.

What You Need to Know About Your Vehicle

Like I stated earlier, you didn't need to know a whole lot about your vehicle in order to get your maximum trailer weight rating. In fact, you just needed to know the model year of your vehicle, the engine you had equipped, how many people were riding in the vehicle, more specifically their weight and if you had the trailer package installed.

The model year should be pretty easy to find, so the other three variables are what most people are going to need to focus on and figure out. On a side note, if you do not know the model year of your vehicle, you could always use the VIN and get it that way. I will explain this in more detail in the following sections.

What Engine Do I Have?

The engine that you had equipped in your vehicle from the factory was definitely the most important detail about your vehicle when it came to getting an accurate trailer weight rating, as I have probably overstated in this article way too much already!

I would bet that most people can pop the hood of their vehicle, look inside the engine Bay and identify what engine they are looking at, but there are some people out there that probably are not confident in doing this. There is another way to identify the engine of your vehicle and that would be to plug in the VIN of your vehicle into an online VIN decoder and that should tell you what engine you have equipped.

These decoders will also tell you a whole bunch of other helpful information about your vehicle and will even help you figure out what model year it is, if you need that information as well.

The Weight of You and Your Occupants

If we look at some of the charts, we can see that dodge specifies a specific number of people in the vehicle and the maximum trailer weight ratings will change according to how many people are in the vehicle.

In some cases, this can be one to two people, three to four people, five to six people or seven people and then they specify specific ratings depending on the number of occupants in the vehicle. One thing I wanted to point out is that it's not really the number of occupants, it is how much each of your occupants weigh.

You can't have five people that weigh over 300 pounds in the vehicle because it would be too much weight than what the assumed amount of weight was. I think dodge could have done a much better job with this metric and it is basically just something I know because of all the research I do when it comes to vehicles, their weights and other information that most people overlook.

I was not able to find a definitive answer on what the assumed weight of each passenger is but from my experience, most other manufacturers use a 150 pound rating for each person in the vehicle and I assume it would be very close to what dodge assumes as well.

Do I Have A Trailer Tow Prep Package Installed?

When researching the trailer tow prep package for these CUVs, I wasn't able to come across any definitive articles or documents on Dodge's website. At this point, if you're curious whether your Journey has a tow package installed, then I would recommend taking it to a dealership to see if they can check for you, as there are no indicators I found that would allow you to check yourself.

If this changes in the future, I will be sure to update this article to make everything as easy as possible.

Resources I Used For This Article:

I gathered all of my information from the owner's manuals that I found on the Dodge website and I posted the links for the specific model years below just in case anybody wants to do a little bit more in-depth research into their specific model or read up on some of the other very helpful tow related information that is included in the owner's manuals.

Dodge Journey Towing Capacity (2009 to 2020)

The Dodge Journey was introduced into Dodge’s lineup as a mid-size crossover SUV in 2009 and was made through 2020. Dodge vehicles are known for their reliability and for having the features consumers expect from today’s SUVs, including towing. But what is the towing capacity of a Dodge Journey?

The Dodge Journey has a towing capacity of 1,000 lbs to 3,500 lbs depending on the model year, engine, and whether or not the Trailer Tow Prep package was installed.

There’s a bit more to know about Dodge Journey towing capabilities which we’ll cover in today’s guide.

Dodge Journey Braked Vs. Unbraked Towing Capacity

All vehicles have different towing capacities based on whether or not you’re towing a trailer that has trailer brakes installed.

Trailer brakes allow the trailer to stop faster than if only the vehicle is using its brakes, allowing the vehicle to tow more weight, so braked towing capacity will always be higher than unbraked towing capacity.

Dodge Journey Braked Towing Capacity: 1,000 lbs.

Dodge Journey Unbraked Towing Capacity: 1,000 lbs.

Dodge Journey Towing Capacity Factors

There are a few factors that affect the Dodge Journey tow capacity.

The Journey’s tow capability varied a bit by year and generation.

Some early years had a max towing capability of 3,500 pounds, while the final year (2020) could  only pull 1,000 pounds.

Recent model years of the Journey have a tow rating of 2,000 pounds.

For some years of the Journey, you could tow up to 1,000 more pounds just by having a 3.6L engine instead of a 2.4L engine.

Towing Package

For earlier years of the Dodge Journey, you could only reach the max tow rating of 3,500 pounds by having the Trailer Tow Prep package installed.

Dodge Journey Engine Specs

There is one engine option for the most recent generation Dodge Journey.

Dodge Journey 2.4L 4-Cylinder Gas Engine

Can You Install A Trailer Hitch On a Dodge Journey?

rear view of dodge journey

If you plan on towing anything with your Dodge Journey, you’ll need a tow hitch and wiring harness.

Depending on what you’re towing, you’re going to need a ball mount (aka a trailer ball hitch) so you can attach items for towing.

Make sure to get the right trailer ball size that matches your hitch and trailer.

Dodge Journey Tow Hitch

Trailer hitches come in different hitch classes , which are rated for different vehicle sizes and weight limits.

The Dodge Journey uses a Class 2 hitch.

  • EASY TO INSTALL. To install the trailer hitch ball mount on your vehicle, simply insert the shank into your vehicle's 1-1/4-inch hitch receiver. The rounded shank makes installation easy

Dodge Journey Trailer Hitch Installation

If you’re considering having a tow hitch added to your Journey, expect to pay between $100 and $200 to have a tow package professionally installed (excluding the cost of the tow hitch and wiring harness).

If you’re handy and looking to save money, you can install the trailer hitch and wiring harness yourself.

Always follow the manufacturer’s directions and use proper safety precautions.

Here’s a great video walkthrough on a Dodge Journey trailer hitch installation:

Hitch Receiver Vs Rear Step Bumper Towing

Some vehicles allow for bumper towing, which means you can mount a tow hitch ball directly on the bumper instead of installing a tow hitch to the vehicle’s frame.

Can I Bumper Tow With a Dodge Journey?

The Dodge Journey does not allow for bumper towing, so you’ll need to use a frame mounted hitch.

How Do I Know If My Dodge Journey Has A Tow Package?

dodge journey towing an atv trailer

You can start by looking under the rear bumper of your Journey to see if you notice a trailer hitch or trailer ball.

That will give you a good indication of if you have a tow hitch already installed on your Journey.

Another way to research this is by checking the paperwork that came with your vehicle or taking it to a local dealer to see what’s installed.

Make sure to have your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) handy if you call the dealer so they can look up the exact specs and whether or not your vehicle has any towing packages or features installed on it.

2018 Dodge Journey: Towing Capacity

The 2018 Dodge Journey is a midsize SUV that offers ample space for passengers and cargo. This versatile vehicle is available in four different trim levels: SE, SXT, Crossroad, and GT.

Under the hood, the 2018 Dodge Journey comes with a standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 173 horsepower and 166 lb-ft of torque. Drivers can also upgrade to a 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 283 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive available as an option.

The Dodge Journey offers a maximum towing capacity of 1,000 pounds with the standard four-cylinder engine, while the V6 engine can tow up to 2,500 pounds. In terms of fuel economy, the four-cylinder engine gets an EPA-estimated 21 mpg combined (19 city/25 highway) with front-wheel drive, while the V6 engine gets an EPA-estimated 19 mpg combined (17 city/25 highway) with front-wheel drive and 19 mpg combined (16 city/24 highway) with all-wheel drive.

2018 Dodge Journey Trim Levels

Before we dive into towing capacity, let’s quickly review the four different trim levels available for the 2018 Dodge Journey:

Each trim level offers its own unique features and upgrades, from upgraded upholstery to a larger touchscreen display. But when it comes to towing capacity, the differences lie in the available engine options.

2018 Dodge Journey Towing Capacity

How much can a Dodge Journey 2018 tow?

The 2018 Dodge Journey comes standard with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 173 horsepower and 166 lb-ft of torque. However, drivers can upgrade to a 3.6-liter V6 engine that pumps out 283 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque.

So, how does the engine choice impact the towing capacity of your 2018 Dodge Journey? Let’s take a look at the numbers.

As you can see, opting for the V6 engine can double your towing capacity compared to the standard four-cylinder engine. If you’re planning to tow a boat, trailer, or other heavy load, it’s worth considering the upgrade.

Factors That Affect Towing Capacity

Keep in mind that towing capacity is affected by a number of factors beyond just the engine and trim level of your 2018 Dodge Journey. Here are a few other factors to consider:

  • Payload capacity: Your vehicle’s payload capacity is the weight of passengers, cargo, and tongue weight combined. Be sure to subtract the weight of all these items from your towing capacity to ensure you’re not exceeding the limit.
  • Trailer weight: The weight of the trailer itself can also impact your towing capacity. Be sure to weigh your trailer to ensure you’re staying within the recommended weight limit.
  • Terrain: If you’re towing up a steep hill or through rough terrain, your towing capacity may be reduced.
  • Weather: Adverse weather conditions like heavy rain or wind can also impact your towing capacity.

Tips for Safe Towing with Your 2018 Dodge Journey

Now that you know the towing capacity for different trim levels and engines of the 2018 Dodge Journey, let’s go over a few tips to help you tow safely:

  • Use a weight distribution hitch: A weight distribution hitch helps distribute the weight of your trailer evenly across your vehicle’s frame, which can help improve handling and stability.
  • Use the right equipment: Be sure to use the right hitch, ball mount, and trailer ball for your trailer and vehicle. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully to ensure a proper fit and safe towing experience.
  • Check your brakes: Make sure your brakes are in good working order and can handle the additional weight of your trailer. You may need to upgrade to larger brakes or use a trailer brake controller.
  • Watch your speed: When towing, it’s important to drive at a safe speed that allows you to maintain control of your vehicle and trailer. Be aware of your surroundings and adjust your speed accordingly.
  • Practice, practice, practice: If you’re new to towing, take some time to practice in an empty parking lot or on a quiet street before hitting the open road. Get a feel for how your vehicle handles with the added weight and learn how to make turns and back up safely.

By following these tips, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable towing experience with your 2018 Dodge Journey.

Dodge Journey vs midsize SUV

When it comes to towing capacity, the 2018 Dodge Journey holds its own against its competitors in the midsize SUV segment. Let’s take a look at how the Journey stacks up against a few of its rivals:

  • Ford Edge: The 2018 Ford Edge offers a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds with the available 3.5-liter V6 engine. This gives the Edge a slight edge over the Journey, but keep in mind that the Edge also comes with a higher starting price.
  • Chevrolet Equinox: The 2018 Chevy Equinox has a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds with the available 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Again, this gives the Equinox a higher towing capacity than the Journey, but it also comes with a higher starting price.
  • Kia Sorento: The 2018 Kia Sorento offers a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds with the available 3.3-liter V6 engine. This puts the Sorento well ahead of the Journey in terms of towing capacity, but it also comes with a significantly higher starting price.

Wrapping Up

The 2018 Dodge Journey offers a variety of engine and trim options to suit your towing needs. Whether you opt for the standard four-cylinder engine or the more powerful V6, be sure to follow recommended weight limits and safety guidelines to tow with confidence. With a little preparation and practice, you can unlock the full towing potential of your Dodge Journey and enjoy all the adventures that come with it.

2014 Dodge Journey review: Our expert's take

What is the 2014 dodge journey.

The 2014 Dodge Journey is a mid-size SUV that competes with the Ford Edge , Honda Pilot , Honda CR-V , Toyota RAV4  and Toyota Highlander . It seats up to seven and comes in SE, SXT, Crossroad, Limited and R/T trim levels, all of which are available in front- or all-wheel drive.

What's New on the 2014 Dodge Journey?

The 2014 Dodge Journey Limited replaces the previous Crew trim, and satellite radio is now available in all trim levels.

How Does the 2014 Dodge Journey Compare to other Mid-Size SUVs?

The Dodge Journey has similar features to the mid-size Toyota Highlander at a lower starting price, and it also costs less than the compact RAV4, CR-V and Escape. The seating position is lower, and handling is less SUV-like than that of the Ford Edge. A standard four-speed transmission results in poor fuel economy compared with its competition, and legroom is narrower as well.

What Features in the 2014 Dodge Journey Are Most Important?

Standard performance features include a 173-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, a four-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The four-cylinder engine supplies 1,000 pounds of towing capacity. Opt for the available 283-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 engine and the towing capacity increases to 2,500 pounds. It's paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and either front- or all-wheel drive.

Significant standard features include a crosshair grille, flared fenders, power heated side mirrors, 17-inch wheels, fabric-covered seats, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, manual air conditioning, second-row floor bins, a 4.3-inch touchscreen stereo, an MP3 jack and a USB port.

Available features include LED taillights, fog lights, dual exhaust tips, 19-inch aluminum wheels, roof rails, a power moonroof, leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats, built-in second-row booster seats, an 8.4-inch touchscreen system, Infinity premium stereo, automatic air conditioning and a storage compartment inside front passenger seat.

Standard safety features include antilock brakes, side curtain airbags, a driver's knee airbag, side-impact airbags for the front seats, front active head restraints and an electronic stability system with electronic roll mitigation and trailer-sway control. A backup camera and rear parking sensors are available.

Should I Buy the 2014 Dodge Journey?

The Dodge Journey is worth your money if you value a smooth ride, great maneuverability and less body roll than other SUVs. Inside the vehicle, the available 8.4-inch touchscreen is easy to use. However, the six-speed automatic transmission included with the V-6 engine can downshift abruptly, the brakes tend to be mushy and unresponsive and the dashboard buttons aren't as classy as the rest of the interior.

Love my dodge journey crossroad.

Bought new 2014 and have lifetime warranty that only costs me $100.00 to fix it. I have already paid for the warranty and more. Knock on wood. Only 80,000 miles on it and looks great!

Beware of the head gasket!!!

We bought our 2014 Journey used in 2016 and had it for nine years. The driveability is great, very comfortable. The ergonomics of the seats and the interior are really nice. Roomy rear cargo with fold down seats was useful. It has decent power and overall we were happy with it...until....We had the dreaded head gasket leak and are told by the dealership that this tends to happen on these cars at age 9 or so. Now we are told that it would cost over 2K to fix it and it would likely have a crack in the engine which would require another 9K to replace the motor. For this reason Journey.... Yer fired!

Love my 2014 Journey Limited

I brought my 2014 Dodge Journey limited 2 years ago, absolutely love it. I take it in for regular maintenance and everything runs great. It is speedy and feels like you are floating down the interstate. Love the 2 row seating, the back row that folds down and the HUGE trunk area. There is also soo much storage in this thing. Only issues I have had with it is my rear tow just went out and I have a small exhaust leak. But I will not trade this thing in until she dies. This is the best car I have owned. Heated steering wheel and seats, outlets in back, power seats, rearview backup camera and the sunroof are all awesome. For the price you pay you really get more than what you think. Put new tires, rims, brakes and rotors and now it looks even better. So happy with it

These 5 Diesel Trucks Have The Highest Towing Capacity In 2024

T he days of diesel have already started to diminish. Diesel engines are more efficient than gasoline engines but produce more emissions, so they've been largely replaced or eliminated in many vehicles. But, when it comes to pulling power, diesels still reign supreme. The biggest heavy-duty pickup trucks still use diesel powertrains to achieve the highest towing capability that no gasoline- or electric-powered trucks can currently match.

A quick note before we start listing these big-burly towing baddies: the numbers listed here are as good as it gets. Pickup trucks come in a dizzying array of configurations, with multiple cab configurations, options for various interior appointments, unique axle ratios, and the choice between two- and four-wheel drive.

All these variations mean that a truck's towing capacity can vary significantly depending on how it's equipped. This is especially true if the truck you're interested in has a different axle ratio than the one optimized for towing. The more options a truck has, the more it weighs and the lower its towing capacity gets. So, the ultra-high towing numbers don't apply across a truck's entire lineup, and they typically aren't paired with the most lavish version of a truck. With that in mind, let's dive in.

Read more: The 15 Most Reliable Pickup Trucks Of All Time, Ranked

5. GMC Sierra 1500

The GMC Sierra 1500 is a full-size truck with an upscale vibe. It's essentially the posh version of the Chevrolet Silverado. Both trucks are capable and have impressive tow ratings (the Chevy is next up on our list), but the GMC offers some additional luxury. There's also a small difference in towing capability, which we'll touch on in the next section, but the GMC is plenty capable.

Available engines for the Sierra 1500 include a turbocharged four-cylinder, a 5.3-liter V8, a 6.2-liter V8, and a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbodiesel. The Duramax diesel puts out 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque, and it's paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. That's enough for maximum towing with the GMC Sierra 1500 and the Duramax diesel, which top out at 13,200 pounds. Considering that most car trailers and even some fully loaded enclosed trailers don't weigh that much, it's a pretty impressive way to start our list.

4. Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Like the GMC Sierra 1500, the Chevy Silverado 1500 is available with four different engines (the turbocharged four-cylinder, the two V8s, and the turbodiesel), and the Duramax diesel puts down the biggest towing numbers of the bunch. The Duramax diesel makes the same 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque in the Chevy as it does in the GMC, and it's paired with the same 10-speed transmission, but with the Chevy, it can tow more. Maximum towing capability with the Silverado is 13,300 pounds -- slightly edging out the GMC.

The 100-pound difference in towing capability between the two is likely the result of some extra equipment on the GMC that increases the truck's overall weight and, as a result, lowers its towing capabilities ever so slightly. It's pretty unlikely that owners will be towing a trailer that fits in that tiny 100-pound range, and if you're towing 13,000 pounds on a regular basis, you'll probably be much more interested in a heavy-duty pickup.

3. Chevrolet Silverado HD / GMC Sierra Sierra HD

This is where towing takes a big step up heavy-duty trucks. There are some significant differences between light-duty and heavy-duty pickups, differences that make the heavy-duty trucks capable of towing quite a bit more weight. HD trucks typically offer gooseneck towing ratings alongside conventional towing ratings that are a bit lower. It's also a limited field of vehicles -- only a few manufacturers make full-size pickups, while even fewer make heavy-duty or HD models. The first heavy-duty truck on our list is the Silverado 3500 HD.

While it isn't the most powerful diesel engine on the market, Chevrolet's 6.6-liter turbodiesel is still pretty robust. With more power and torque added for 2024, the Duramax V8 diesel puts out 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque. The Duramax engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and can pull as much as 36,000 pounds with a gooseneck trailer. The Silverado 3500 HD can still pull as much as 20,000 pounds if you go with conventional towing.

Like the full-size Chevy and GMC trucks, the heavy-duty pickups from these two manufacturers are virtually identical underneath. The GMC Sierra 3500 HD offers a few additional creature comforts without any mechanical differences. It is available with the same diesel engine as the Chevy, with the same power output and the same impressively high towing rating of 36,000 pounds.

2. Ram 3500 Heavy Duty

The Ram Heavy Duty comes in two flavors: 2500 and 3500. The 6.4-liter gasoline-powered V8 is standard with both the 2500 and 3500. It puts out some robust numbers: 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. That's enough to tow over 18,000 pounds -- certainly impressive. But if you want the big towing numbers, the optional 6.7-liter diesel engine is where you'll find them.

The Ram 2500 and 3500 offer an optional six-cylinder 6.7-liter diesel engine, but the 3500 is the one for top-towing. The standard output for the 6.7-liter engine is 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque. The high-output version, however, produces 420 horsepower and 1,075 lb-ft of torque.

With its optional Cummins turbodiesel, the Ram Heavy Duty 3500 is rated as high as 37,090 pounds with a gooseneck trailer and 23,000 pounds with a conventional trailer. It might not have made the number one spot on our list, but it's no slouch.

1. Ford Super Duty

Though they've offered one in the past, Ford stopped selling a diesel powertrain in their full-size truck, the F-150, in 2021. So, if you want to go diesel with a truck from the Blue Oval, it's the Super Duty or nothing. The Super Duty goes up in capability as the numbers go up, starting with the F-250, then the F-350, and topping out with the F-450 -- the biggest and most capable of the bunch.

The Super Duty F-450 is only available with a 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel engine. The engine itself, however, is available with two different outputs. The standard version of the 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel is rated at 475 horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft. of torque, but the high-output version is rated at 500 horsepower and a whopping 1,200 lb-ft. That makes it one of the most powerful trucks ever built .

With a gooseneck connection, the Ford Super Duty F-450 is rated as high as 40,000 pounds, and via conventional towing, it can pull as much as 30,000 pounds. With those numbers, you definitely won't need a bigger boat.
