APT Travelmarvel: ‘We’re one of the industry’s best kept secrets’

APT Travelmarvel adds new Croatia itinerary

APT Travelmarvel cruise director Roland  Noordermeer explains what makes the Travelmarvel Contemporary-class ships different from the competition and stresses the importance of getting travel agents on board.

How does it feel to be back sailing after so long away?

Af ter 872 da ys in dock, it’s been very exciting to get back onto the rivers and to welcome our APT and Travelmarvel guests on board.

I truly mean it when I say that my colleagues and I do our jobs because we are passionate about travel and about making our guests’ holiday dreams come true. I’m thrilled that we are sailing again and we’re better than ever.

APT Travelmarvel cruise director Roland Noordermeer

What makes the new Contemporary-class ships – Vega, Polaris , and Capella – unique among the competition?

It’s been a great pleasure to be working aboard the first of our three new Travelmarvel Contemporary-class river ships to launch, Vega .

We were eagerly awaiting this moment throughout last year and I can assure you that she is a real gem.

Vega and her sister vessels are modern, spacious and elegant, and filled with cutting-edge technology for maximum guest comfort.

Their unique selling point, as you might expect from an Australian-owned company, is that the new  ships pair amazing facilities with a relaxed and laid-back vibe.

The ships also have a clever 2½ deck design, which gives access to the sun deck and its rooftop bar and barbeque throughout the cruise.

How do these ships differ from others in the Travelmarvel fleet?

They have an exciting new concept which the  fleet hasn’t seen before – the addition of our more casual dining and social area, McGeary’s Bar.

When you enter McGeary’s , named after Geoff McGeary , the founder and owner of APT, guests will immediately feel relaxed and at home in this traditional pub.

Another new addition for our coffee loving guests is that we have an on-board barista, who will deliver the perfect morning caffeine injection ahead of an exciting day’s sightseeing.

APT Travemarvel new ship Vega

What can guests expect – not only on board, but also in terms of shore excursions?

In a new move for our maiden season, guests can either choose to sail a full 15-day cruise from the Netherlands to Hungary, or take one of our two new, shorter split cruises, the eight-day Reflections of the Rhine & Main from Amsterdam to Nuremberg, or the nine-day Delightful Danube from Nuremberg to Budapest.

My personal highlights of our cruises are our home hosted visits in the municipality of Miltenberg , where our guests get to join the family for coffee and cake and learn first-hand about the traditional way of life in the region.

New ships always bring excitement – but does it feel extra special given what has happened in recent times?

Being the first cruise director to sail on a Travelmarvel Contemporary ship is something I’m so excited about.

For us, and all our colleagues across the industry, we are so glad to welcome guests back with open arms.

Moving forward, how will the Travelmarvel brand grow?

Travelmarvel is currently one of the industry’s best kept secrets – combining excellent value for money, great commissions for the trade, flexible inclusions and plenty of free time for guests’ independent exploration, and the APT gold standard of service at every touchpoint.

As we grow, we’re on a mission to spread the word more broadly, and to help agents make the most of the fantastic sales opportunity that Travelmarvel offers them.

I would strongly recommend that travel agents join us on on board for at least a week so that they can understand how the Travelmarvel experience sells itself.

With our Book Three, Sail free incentive running until 31 August 2022, agents can even secure their place aboard for free.

Travelmarvel has also launched a small ship cruising programme in Croatia . With these new yachts, Lady Eleganza and Princess Eleganza , the experience is so authentic, and dropping anchor can be done almost anywhere.

In Asia, we will protect our position as the number one cruise operator in the region by volume with a new ship,   RV Apsara . That the vessel previously sailed under the APT banner speaks to how luxurious this new standard for Travelmarvel on the Mekong is.

Establishment of PGA TOUR Enterprises Board of Directors announced

(Ben Jared/PGA TOUR)

(Ben Jared/PGA TOUR)

Board includes seven PGA TOUR players, as well as accomplished SSG principals, all focused on commercial growth strategy, fan engagement

Change Text Size

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The 13-member Board of Directors has been established for the recently launched PGA TOUR Enterprises, effective immediately. This new Board – comprised of nine PGA TOUR Directors approved by the PGA TOUR Policy Board and four Strategic Sports Group (SSG) Directors appointed by the SSG investor group – will lead all commercial activities related to the PGA TOUR and will focus on driving fan engagement and growth, as well as developing new media, sponsorship and commercial opportunities.

All six current Player Directors from the PGA TOUR Policy Board will simultaneously serve on the PGA TOUR Enterprises Board of Directors: Patrick Cantlay, Peter Malnati, Adam Scott, Webb Simpson, Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods. In addition, given the significant time investment required from the players to serve on both Boards – and as part of the TOUR’s governance review – the Player Directors identified the benefit of having a “Director Liaison” on both Boards as well.

To that end, the Player Directors selected former PGA TOUR player Joe Ogilvie for that position, and Ogilvie will join the PGA TOUR Policy Board and the PGA TOUR Enterprises Board of Directors.

Joe Gorder, who serves as an Independent Director on the PGA TOUR Policy Board, and PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan round out the PGA TOUR representation on the Enterprises Board. Monahan will serve as the Chief Executive Officer of Enterprises, and Woods will serve as the Vice Chairman of the Board.

As announced in January, SSG – a consortium of American sports team owners led by Fenway Sports Group – joined PGA TOUR Enterprises as a minority investor, providing an initial $1.5 billion of capital that will unlock investment opportunities to grow the TOUR and enhance the game of golf around the world.

The four SSG Directors will be:

  • John W. Henry , principal, Fenway Sports Group; manager, Strategic Sports Group;
  • Arthur M. Blank , co-founder, The Home Depot; owner and chairman, AMB Sports and Entertainment (Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta United, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta Drive GC, PGA TOUR Superstore);
  • Andrew B. Cohen, chief investment officer and co-founder, Cohen Private Ventures; vice chairman, New York Mets;
  • Sam Kennedy, partner/CEO, Fenway Sports Group; president & CEO, Boston Red Sox.

The PGA TOUR Enterprises Board will elect a chairman at an upcoming meeting.

“Today’s announcement is another milestone for our organization, as I believe we have arrived at a PGA TOUR Enterprise’s Board of Directors with the right composition, expertise and balance necessary to take our organization into the future,” said Monahan. “Our current and former players will provide essential insight into our members’ priorities and needs. And we welcome key SSG members to the leadership team, whose exceptional track records and achievements in global professional sports will lend a wealth of knowledge into the opportunities ahead for the PGA TOUR. Their expertise will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in the success and growth of our commercial initiatives.”

“We are excited to continue to build the PGA TOUR as the highest level of competition in professional golf,” the Player Directors and Liaison Director said in a joint statement. “It’s an opportunity for us to shape something special that will not only create more value for the PGA TOUR, but will also benefit and grow our fanbase. We’re ready to get started.”

“Our role on the Enterprises Board will focus on hearing Player Director ideas and working alongside them to ensure the sport’s commercial growth occurs in a way that creates the best possible product for fans,” said Henry. “All of us at Strategic Sports Group see a bright future for the PGA TOUR and the constitution of the Enterprises Board is an important first step in realizing that future.”

In summary, the 13-member PGA TOUR Enterprises Board of Directors are as follows: Blank, Cantlay, Cohen, Gorder, Henry, Kennedy, Malnati, Monahan, Ogilvie, Scott, Simpson, Spieth and Tiger Woods.

In addition to Ogilvie’s forthcoming appointment to the PGA TOUR (Inc.) Policy Board, Commissioner Monahan will be a voting member as well, which will expand that Policy Board from 12 to 14 (additions in bold): Player Directors – Cantlay, Malnati, Scott, Simpson, Spieth, Woods; Liaison Director – Ogilvie; PGA TOUR Commissioner – Monahan ; Independent Directors – Chairman Edward Herlihy, Jimmy Dunne, Mark Flaherty, Mary Meeker, Gorder; PGA of America Director – John Lindert.

Tiger Woods, PGA Tour Enterprises

Tiger Woods will add a new title to his resume. The 15-time major champion will be the vice-chairman of the new for-profit PGA Tour Enterprises' new 13-member Board of Directors.

Woods is only superseded by Commissioner Jay Monahan, who will become the CEO, per a press release from the PGA Tour.

Woods joined the Policy Board last fall, which put players on an equal footing with other decision-makers. So it makes sense why the 82-time PGA Tour winner was appointed vice-chairman of the new entity.

After all, he isn't playing as often and has turned his focus to the future of golf.

The Board of Directors will consist of mostly PGA Tour players, along with four Strategic Sports Group members.

All commercial activities related to the PGA Tour will be led by this new Board of Directors. The primary focus will be driving fan engagement and developing new media, sponsorship, and commercial opportunities.

All six player directors on the PGA Tour's Policy Board will also serve on this new board. Those six men are Patrick Cantlay, Peter Malnati, Adam Scott, Webb Simpson, Jordan Spieth and Woods.

The Player Directors also benefit from having a "Director Liaison" on both boards since this role requires significant time from the golfers.

That person is Joe Ogilvie, a former Tour player, for the position. He will join the Policy and PGA Tour Enterprises Board of Directors. With his appointment, he and Monahan will become voting members on the PGA Tour's Policy Board, taking that group from 12 to 14 people.

Independent Director of the Tour's Policy Board, Joe Gorder, rounds out the PGA Tour’s representation on the new Board of Directors.

Four SSG employees —John W. Henry, Arthur M. Blank, Andrew B. Cohen, and Sam Kennedy—will round out the 13-man panel.

In January, the PGA Tour announced SSG's $3 billion deal. More recently, Lebron James, Drake and other individuals surfaced as investors.

The PGA Tour is reportedly still in discussions with Saudi-backed PIF on a deal. But it unknown whether that will ever come to fruition.

John Henry, Sam Kennedy take seats on new PGA Tour Enterprises’ Board of Directors

Red Sox owner John Henry and club president Sam Kennedy will take on a leadership role as members of a newly formed Board of Directors for PGA Tour Enterprises, the entity that will lead all commercial activities for the PGA Tour.

John Henry, head of Fenway Sports Group, as well as Red Sox president and FSG partner Sam Kennedy were named Wednesday to a 13-member Board of Directors for the recently launched PGA Tour Enterprises that will lead all commercial activities for the PGA Tour.

The board has four members from Strategic Sports Group, the consortium of mainly U.S. sports owners led by FSG providing the initial $1.5 billion investment . Henry, who also owns the Globe, and Kennedy are joined on the board by Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank and New York Mets vice chairman Andrew Cohen.

Players will own a majority vote, with seven seats on the board. Tiger Woods, Patrick Cantlay, Jordan Spieth, Adam Scott, Webb Simpson, and Peter Malnati will continue serving on the PGA Tour board that now will deal largely with competition.

Because of Woods’ dual board positions and the time it requires, former player Joe Ogilvie was appointed as a “director liaison” for both boards. The final two board members are PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and tour board member Joe Gorder, the chairman and CEO of Valero Energy Corp.

Monahan will serve as board CEO, while Woods was appointed vice chairman. The chairman of the new board will be decided at the next meeting.

Henry said the SSG presence on the board would focus on hearing the players and working with them to make sure the tour’s commercial growth creates the best product for fans.

“All of us at Strategic Sports Group see a bright future for the PGA Tour and the constitution of the Enterprises Board is an important first step in realizing that future,” he said.

It was a big overhaul for the governance of the PGA Tour, which still is negotiating with the Saudi backers of rival LIV Golf. The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia signed an original framework agreement with the PGA Tour in June, before interest from U.S. private equity.

The changes include the PGA Tour board — separate from PGA Tour Enterprises — adding Ogilvie as a board member and giving Monahan a vote. That brings the PGA Tour board to 14 members, including PGA of America President John Lindert.

Ogilvie, who has an economics degree from Duke, paid close attention to golf’s business affairs during his 15 years on the PGA Tour, where he won one time. He retired in 2014 and now is a partner for Wallace Capital.

Monahan said the new board provides the “right composition, expertise and balance necessary to take our organization into the future.”

“Our current and former players will provide essential insight into our members’ priorities and needs,” he said in a statement. “And we welcome key SSG members to the leadership team, whose exceptional track records and achievements in global professional sports will lend a wealth of knowledge into the opportunities ahead for the PGA Tour.”

‘Annie’ actress-turned-director still…

Things To Do Theater

‘annie’ actress-turned-director still adores cleveland-bound musical, it’s a cliché to say it,” says jenn thompson, ‘but everybody needs “annie” all the time’.

It would appear it’s still the hard-knock life for the orphans of the Cleveland-bound North American Tour of “Annie.” (Evan Zimmerman for MurphyMade)

Jenn Thompson is living proof the sun truly does come out tomorrow.

After originating the role of Pepper during the inaugural 1977 Broadway run of “Annie,” the actress — who returned to the musical more than two decades ago as Grace Farrell in a regional production — is the director of the current national tour , which runs March 19 through 24 at Playhouse Square’s Connor Palace .

“I’ve often said this, and I will I’m sure say this for the rest of my life: ‘Annie’ on Broadway was the best job I’ve ever had and likely the best job I will ever have,” said Thompson, calling from Brooklyn, New York.

“It was the show to be in. Every kid, every little girl that was in theater, wanted to be one of those kids. It was a very coveted small group of us and it was great. I was in the show for almost two years, and it never got old.”

apt tour directors

When describing what it was like to be in the original run of “Annie,” Thompson said it was as though the youthful cast members were “rock stars” and “astronauts.”

Being in the show to see on Broadway at the time included unimaginable perks.

“Everybody came backstage — are you kidding me?” she said. “We were like the ‘Hamilton’ of our day. I met Michael Jackson, John Travolta, Burt Reynolds, Ginger Rogers, Muhammad Ali, Sid Caesar — every huge star of the day to the most random.

“The ‘Annie’ orphans at the time got into every club. We were like the most sought-after group. We went to every premiere and every happening around town.”

“Annie” tells the positive story of a spunky orphan in 1930s New York City. The girl overcomes the evil ways of the New York City Orphanage’s Miss Hannigan to explore the Big Apple before finding a new home and family with billionaire Oliver Warbucks; his personal secretary, Grace Farrell; and dog Sandy.

apt tour directors

“Annie” features the iconic book and score written by Tony Award winners Thomas Meehan, Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin.

When it came time for Thompson to revisit “Annie” as a director, it was “completely surreal,” she said.

“I had a hard time reading the script because I would get lost falling down these sort of time-warp rabbit holes,” she said. “Almost violent déjà vu would occur for me — mostly incredibly pleasant.”

Speaking to the lasting legacy of “Annie,” The New York Times estimated the popular musical is annually performed more than 900 times around the globe.

‘Something Clean’ at Dobama review: Theater offers another challenging show

Having experienced the production from different angles — actress, director, theatergoer — Thompson knows its secret.

“It’s a cliché to say it, but everybody needs ‘Annie’ all the time,” she said. “There is a misconception — at least how I perceive it — that she’s just this sort of sunny, optimistic, hope-spreading, chirpy kid. I don’t see it that way.”

Instead, the director’s view of the lead character is about survival through darkness.

“She’s born in probably the worst of The Depression, parentless,” she said. “Annie is in an abusive situation in this orphanage. She chooses hope for survival and, I think, that message never gets stale. And, unfortunately, we always need that.”

There’s also one other lasting component of “Annie” toward which countless audiences seemingly have gravitated.

“As a show, it just happens to be beautifully built,” she said. “It’s just expertly conceived.

“We’re seeing generations bring their kids back in so it’s being introduced over and over and over again -- a passing of the torch that way.”

When: March 19 through 24 (times vary).

American Ballet Theater Names Dance Veteran as Executive Director

Barry Hughson, a leader at the National Ballet of Canada, will join the company as it tries to get beyond financial woes.

American Ballet Theater, one of the largest dance companies in the United States, has faced a series of challenges in recent months. Relations with the dancers have been tense, finances have been strained and the organization has lacked a permanent executive director.

On Thursday, Ballet Theater announced it was bringing in a dance veteran as it tries to move beyond its woes: Barry Hughson , executive director of the National Ballet of Canada, will join the company in that role in July. He succeeds Janet Rollé, who resigned suddenly last summer after 17 months on the job.

Hughson, 56, a former dancer, said in an interview that he was undaunted by Ballet Theater’s troubles.

“A.B.T. has been a company that I’ve loved since I was a 10-year-old ballet student watching Baryshnikov,” he said, referring to the star dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov. “It’s such an important institution in American dance, and it’s a challenging time for the arts community right now.”

Ballet Theater’s leaders said they chose Hughson, executive director at the National Ballet of Canada since 2014, because of his extensive experience in the field. He has held top positions at Boston Ballet and Atlanta Ballet, among other organizations. They said he also showed an eagerness to work with Susan Jaffe , Ballet Theater's artistic director, who has served as interim executive director since Rollé’s departure.

“I expect and I hope it’ll be a wonderful, cooperative leadership team,” Andrew F. Barth, chairman of Ballet Theater’s board, said in an interview. “We’re going to have the opportunity to examine how to bring our art, how to bring this beautiful cultural aspect, to more people in more ways that are financially sound.”

Like most performing arts organizations, Ballet Theater, founded in 1939, suffered during the pandemic, which resulted in the cancellation of two seasons and cost the company millions of dollars in anticipated ticket revenue and touring fees.

But while audiences have returned — attendance is averaging about 69 percent of capacity, compared with 63 percent before the pandemic — Ballet Theater has been grappling with other financial challenges.

A major source of revenue for the company — its summer season at the Metropolitan Opera House — has been curtailed since 2022, when the Met extended its performances into June. That decision forced Ballet Theater, with a budget of $51 million, to reduce its season at the Met to five weeks from eight. Overall, the number of performances by Ballet Theater, which tours extensively, has fallen to 83 this season, compared with 114 in 2018-19.

And Ballet Theater’s subscriber base, which has traditionally provided an important source of revenue, has eroded, falling to 2,516 in the most recent season from 6,251 in 2018-19. The company has also seen philanthropic donations decline, though it declined to provide specifics. Laura Miller, a spokeswoman for Ballet Theater, did not give a reason, saying only that detailed fund-raising data was not available.

Relations between Ballet Theater’s administration and dancers have been tense recently because of heated negotiations over a new labor contract. The company reached a deal with dancers last month, agreeing to raises and other benefits.

Hughson said he would work to stabilize Ballet Theater’s finances and to help the company find new audiences. He said he wanted to expand the company’s presence in the New York market, which New York City Ballet has traditionally dominated. And he hopes to re-examine the company’s touring model, long Ballet Theater’s lifeblood, so that tours can be “artistically vibrant but also economically viable.”

“We know the glorious past of A.B.T.,” he said, “but it’s really about what stories are we going to tell, how are we going to support our artists and how are we going to create a sustainable model so that A.B.T. is here in another 80 years?”

The resignation of Rollé, just a week before the start of Ballet Theater’s 2023 summer season, came as a shock to the dance industry. Rollé, who had previously served as general manager of Beyoncé’s entertainment firm, did not offer an explanation, saying only that she would turn her focus to service on corporate and nonprofit boards.

Barth, the board chair, said that the job “wasn’t quite what she was expecting,” but that she had departed on good terms.

“I’m sure she’ll be coming to watch us at the ballet,” he said, “and I’ll greet her with a hug.”

Barth said the company had considered keeping Jaffe, a former star ballerina with the company, in place as both artistic and executive leader, but decided “it’s just too much work” for one person.

Hughson, whose career as a performer began at the Washington Ballet, said he hoped to have a long tenure. “It feels like the right place for me to spend the last 10 years of my career,” he said, “and see if I can make a difference.”
