Barry Tourist Railway
We have a Station Café at the Barry Island Station Buildings, which is open throughout the year from Easter onwards, and our passengers are welcomed to join the Railway at the café where you can purchase tickets for our services. We operate services for passengers on dates throughout the year, using either our own trains, or one of our regular visiting steam locomotives. At Barry we have a heritage 1957 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU Class 101), called Iris II that we have refurbished and turned into a comfortable passenger environment. We also have a Class 73 diesel locomotive, which can typically be seen hauling Mk 2f passenger coaches.

Barry Tourist Railway
The geographic location, short running line, sporadic use of the DMU in service and the odd departmental nature of some of the units all contributed to the Barry Tourist Railway being rather out of the limelight in the DMU enthusiasts' world.
A private DMU fleet had progressively grown during the 2000’s, and at its peak, three sets of classes 108 , 115 & 117 were operational on the line but all were later moved on to other railways.
Later, services were operated by a heavily modified Class 101 2-car set, and another Class 101 vehicle was added to the collection for longer term restoration.
However by 2023 there was a second reorganisation and again all the vehicles were sold on and moved to new homes, leaving the railway without any DMU's.

Brief description
"Barry has three stations serving it - this one, Barry Docks and Cadoxton stations, as well as the nearby Barry Island Station. Opened in February 1889, this station was necessary for trains carrying coal to the docks at Barry, which, in turn, was crucial to the economy of the area. In 2014, the station was subject to a £200m regeneration plan, aiming to improve train travel in and around the capital. This led to an extra third platform and improved signalling.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_railway_station
As at Feb 2023 " Barry railway station ( Welsh : Y Barri ) is one of three stations serving the town of Barry, Vale of Glamorgan in South Wales . This one, Barry Town, is preceded by Barry Docks and Cadoxton stations on the Barry Branch which runs from Cardiff Central to a fourth station at Barry Island , the terminus. Barry is also the junction at the start of the Vale of Glamorgan Line which serves Rhoose and Llantwit Major and terminates at Bridgend .
Passenger services are operated by Transport For Wales as part of the Valley Lines network.
The station has a basic four trains per hour service (Mon-Sat) to Cardiff Central eastbound and three per hour to Barry Island and one per hour to Bridgend westbound. Eastbound trains usually continue beyond Cardiff Central to either Merthyr Tydfil or Aberdare (half-hourly to each). [4]
On Sundays, there are either 2 or 3 trains per hour to Cardiff Central (one each hour continuing to either Merthyr or Aberdare plus one every other hour to Rhymney ), half-hourly trains to Barry Island and one every two hours to Bridgend.
Services are mainly operated by Class 150 Sprinter units, as which usually operate in pairs to form a 4-car service."

This heritage railway route, sometimes also referred to as Barry Island Railway, is aimed mainly at offering families an all-weather attraction, and giving rail enthusiasts the chance to travel along this historic line (some - but not all - of whom may be classed as 'train spotters'). It runs only on certain days during certain months, when it's likely to be busiest - such as on Sundays and school holidays, and for special Father Christmas-themed seasonal trips. You can download a PDF of the operating times from the Vale of Glamorgan Council's website at http://www.valeofglamorgan.gov.uk/idoc.ashx?docid=6bfd0def-36c0-41ff-b752-3032b6497e27&version=-1 The owners of the railway, Cambrian Transport, are planning to develop the line over coming years to offer more options for visitors.
