CANADA eTA (ELECTRONIC TRAVEL AUTHORIZATION)

Canada eTA is a travel authorization that needs to be obtained online prior to traveling to Canada.

Canada eTA is MANDATORY for all visa EXEMPT nationalities.

Who needs Canada eTA?

Canada eTA is REQUIRED for all visa EXEMPT nationalities entering Canada for tourism or transit. If you are visa EXEMPT, you DO NOT NEED a visa but you REQUIRE an eTA to enter Canada.

Who does not need an eTA?

The following does not need an eTA to enter Canada.

  • Canadian dual citizens
  • Canadian permanent residents
  • United States passport holders
  • Passport holders with a valid Canadian visa (tourist, student, work, etc)

Is Canada eTA a visa?

No. Canada eTA is NOT a visa. It’s just an online authorization that you would need to obtain prior to your trip to Canada.

Can you use ESTA to enter Canada?

You CANNOT use ESTA (United States Electronic System for Travel Authorization) to enter Canada. ESTA is a travel authorization to enter the US. It cannot be used for Canada. Even if you hold a valid ESTA, you would still need to apply for eTA to travel to Canada.

Canada eTA validity

Canada eTA is valid for 5 years or until the expiry of your current passport, whichever is earlier. eTA is also linked to a specific passport, so if you get a new passport for any reason, you must apply for a new eTA.

How long can you stay in Canada with an eTA?

You can stay up to 6 months in Canada with an eTA.

How many times can you enter Canada with an eTA?

Canada eTA is multiple-entry and valid for 5 years. Once you obtain your eTA, you can travel to Canada as many times as you want within that 5 years period.

Canada eTA application process

You can apply for Canada eTA online at Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.

NOTE Flight tickets and hotel bookings are not required for eTA. Apply for eTA before you purchase your flight tickets or book any hotels.

Documents required for Canada eTA

  • Credit/debit card

Canada eTA fee

Canada eTA fee is $7 CAD. The fee must be paid using a credit or debit card in CAD only. Since the fee is in CAD, your bank may charge a foreign transaction fee.

Canada eTA processing time

Canada eTA processing takes only a few minutes. In rare cases, it can take several days if additional documentation or an interview is required. IRCC will contact you with instructions in such cases.

Canada eTA status

You can check your Canada eTA status on eTA Status Tool provided by IRCC. After your eTA is approved, you can use this tool to check the validity and print a copy if needed.

If it has been over 72 hours since you applied and there has been no status update, you can contact customer service using the IRCC Webform .

Documents to carry when entering Canada on an eTA

  • Original passport
  • Return or onward flight ticket

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day of arrival in Canada.

Proof of onward ticket can be printed or soft-copy on your phone. If you are traveling on a one-way ticket, get proof of an onward ticket from OnwardTicket .

NOTE A copy of your approved eTA is not required to carry. Canadian immigration officers and airline staff will have access to the Canada eTA system and they can verify your eTA using your passport number.

CANADA TOURIST VISA (TRV)

A Canada tourist visa or visitor visa is formally known as Canada Temporary Resident Visa (Canada TRV). You need a Canada TRV if you are from a visa REQUIRED nationality.

Canada tourist visas can be applied either ONLINE or by mailing a PAPER application to the consulate.

I highly recommend applying ONLINE. This guide focuses on the online application only. There are several advantages to applying online. It’s fast. It ensures everything is complete and correct. You only need to send your passport after your visa is approved.

Validity of Canada tourist visa

Canada tourist visas are usually issued for 10 years or until the expiration of your current passport.

  • Your passport expiry: Nov 14, 2029
  • Applied for your Canada visa online: Feb 01, 2020
  • Given your biometrics: Feb 04, 2020
  • Received a notification that your visa is approved: Mar 01, 2020
  • Submitted your passport to your nearest VAC: Mar 07, 2020
  • Picked up your passport with visa sticker: Mar 20, 2020

Your visa will be valid from March 01, 2020, to Nov 14, 2029.

Date of issue: Mar 01, 2020

Date of expiry: Nov 14, 2029

NOTE If your passport is expiring soon, renew your passport first. And then apply for your Canada tourist visa, that way you can get the tourist visa for 10 years.

When to apply for Canada tourist visa

You can apply for Canada tourist visa up to 3 months in advance.

Example: If you plan to visit the UK on April 15, you can apply for your Canada visa on or after January 16.

IMPORTANT Canada visa process can take up to 30 calendar days or even longer in some cases. I strongly recommend applying for your Canada visa at least 2 months in advance.

How long can you stay in Canada on a tourist visa

You can stay in Canada for up to 6 months or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Occasionally, the immigration officers at the airport write an exit date on your entry stamp. This exit date can be less than 6 months. You must exit Canada within the exit date.

How many times can you enter Canada on a tourist visa?

Canada tourist visas are usually multiple-entry, valid for 10 years or until your passport expires. You can travel to Canada as many times as you like within the expiry of your tourist visa.

Documents required for Canada tourist visa

The following documents are required for Canada tourist visa.

  • Completed and signed Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) Application “Form IMM5257”
  • Completed family information “Form IMM5645”
  • Proof of financial support (last 4-month bank statements or payslips or employment letter)
  • Copy of your passport (first and last page)
  • Purpose of travel (round-trip flight tickets and hotel bookings)
  • Travel history (all pages with visas/stamps from your old and new passport in the last 10 years)
  • Completed “Schedule 1 Form 5257”
  • Letter of explanation of your trip (optional, a cover letter explaining your purpose of travel to Canada)

All forms can be downloaded from your application page.

Provide all pages of your old and new passports that have stamps or visas. This will ensure you have a considerable travel history.

NOTE If you have traveled to Canada in the last 10 years or hold a valid US non-immigrant visa, your application may be processed in 2 to 5 working days under the CAN+ program.

What is CAN+ visa program?

Canada Immigration and Citizenship (CIC) has started asking applicants for visas, stamps and travel history for the last 10 years.

Applicants who have traveled to Canada in the last 10 years or hold a valid US non-immigrant visa are considered for CAN+ expedited program. If qualified, some additional documentation is not required and the application is processed within 2-5 working days.

At the beginning of your application, you will be asked questions specific to previous travel to Canada and the United States to determine your eligibility. You will be asked to upload less documentation if you are determined as eligible.

Even though you qualify for the CAN+ expedited program, your application may take several days to process. There are many factors involved. So do not count on the CAN+ program. Instead, follow the current processing times and apply for Canada visitor visa well in advance.

Canada tourist visa fee

Canada tourist visa fee is $100 CAD. The fee must be paid using a credit or debit card in CAD only. Since the fee is in CAD, your bank may charge a foreign transaction fee.

Biometric procedure

Biometrics are mandatory for all Canada tourist visa applicants. Your fingerprints are scanned and your photograph is taken during the biometric appointment.

NOTE Biometrics are valid for 10 years. If you have given your biometrics in the last 10 years as part of a Canada visitor, work or study visa, you are NOT REQUIRED to give your biometrics again.

You can use the Biometric Validity Tool on the IRCC website to check if your biometrics are still valid.

If your biometrics are still valid, you do not need to pay the biometric fee and do not need to give biometrics.

The following are the steps for biometrics.

STEP 1: Pay your biometric fee

The biometric fee for Canada tourist visa is $85 CAD. The fee must be paid using a credit or debit card in CAD only.

You can pay the biometric fee when you submit your visa application or at a later time. It’s highly recommended to pay your biometric fee when you submit your visa application. Paying later will delay your biometrics and eventually your visa process.

STEP 2: Receive biometric instruction letter within 24 hours

If you have paid your biometric fee when submitting your visa application, you will receive your biometric instruction letter within 24 hours of application submission.

STEP 3: Schedule biometric appointment at your nearest VAC

After you receive your biometric instruction letter, you will have 30 days to give your biometrics. Failing to give biometrics within 30 days will result in visa refusal.

Follow the instructions in your biometric instruction letter and schedule a biometric appointment at your nearest Visa Application Center (VAC) or Application Support Center (ASC) .

Once you schedule your biometric appointment, you will receive a biometric appointment confirmation letter from VAC or ASC.

If you have temporary injuries on your fingers and/or your face, you must wait to give your biometrics. You should contact IRCC customer support to request additional time for your biometrics appointment.

If you have permanent injuries on your fingers and/or face, you can continue with your biometrics appointment. The staff at VAC can scan as many fingers as possible and take your photograph.

STEP 4: Gather documents for biometric appointment

Print your biometric instruction letter and biometric appointment confirmation. Some VACs require a consent form. If your VAC requires one, you will see instructions about it in your biometric appointment confirmation.

STEP 4: Appear in-person at the VAC on your appointment day

On your appointment day, carry the following documents

  • Biometric instruction letter
  • Biometric appointment confirmation
  • Consent form (if required)

Your fingerprints will be scanned and your photo will be taken. To avoid any issues with your fingerprint or photo, follow the below instructions.

  • Make sure your 10 fingers are free of any temporary injuries, cuts and cracks
  • Make sure your 10 fingers are free of paint, oil, grease, etc.
  • Make sure your face is free of any temporary injuries, sunglasses, hats, etc.
  • Wear a bright color shirt or T-shirt

If your application has been pending for too long, you can contact CIC using their IRCC Webform. Follow the below steps to contact CIC.

  • Go to IRCC Web Form
  • Click on “Tell us more”.
  • For the question “Have you submitted an application for”, select option “Yes”

Priority visa service

There is no priority visa service for Canada tourist visa. Check current processing times and apply well in advance. You can apply for Canada tourist visa up to 3 months in advance.

If you traveled to Canada in the last 10 years or hold a valid US non-immigrant visa, your application MAY BE expedited under CAN+ program where your application will be processed in just a few days.

Processing your application in CAN+ expedited program is at the discretion of CIC. So, do not completely rely on that. Instead, follow the timeline and apply for Canada visitor visa at least 3 months before your travel.

Passport submission

When your Canada tourist visa application is approved, you will be notified via email. You must submit or mail your original passport to your nearest VAC or ASC. The VAC or ASC will then send your passport to the Consulate of Canada for the visa sticker.

Customer support

There is no dedicated customer service. You can track your application status online. If you have to contact CIC for any reason, use the IRCC Web Form . For other inquiries, you can contact your nearest VAC.

Application withdrawal

There is no formal procedure to withdraw your Canada tourist visa application. You can just abandon it. If you do not send your passport within 30 days of application approval, your application will be void anyway.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is GCKey on CIC website?

The Government of Canada Key (GCKey) is needed to access any of the Government of Canada’s online services, including Canada Immigration and Citizenship (CIC) website. Therefore, you need a GCKey to sign into the CIC website to apply for Canada tourist visa. GCKey is basically a username and password.

Why is my application not being processed in CAN+ expedited program

Even though you qualify for CAN+ expedited program, your application may take several days to process. The application process took more than 30 days for some readers with a travel history to Canada and/or hold US visas. There are many factors involved and ultimately it’s at the discretion of CIC whether to process your application quickly.

My advice is to just follow the regular processing timeline. Check the current processing times and apply well in advance.

How relevant is travel history for Canada visa?

Travel history will improve your chances of visa approval. It can also speed up the process. If you have traveled to Canada in the last 10 years or hold a valid US visa, your application may be processed quickly under CAN+ expedited program.

How long can I stay in Canada as a visitor?

Help Centre what do you need help with?

Most visitors can stay for up to 6 months in Canada.

If you’re allowed to enter Canada, the border services officer may allow you to stay for less or more than 6 months.

  • If so, they’ll put the date you need to leave by in your passport. They might also give you a document.
  • If you don’t get a stamp in your passport, you can stay for 6 months from the day you entered Canada or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
  • If you need a stamp, you can ask a border services officer for one. If you arrive at an airport that uses primary inspection kiosks , ask the border services officer after you finish at the kiosk.

If you want to stay longer than your authorized stay, you should apply for an extension at least 30 days before the authorized end of your stay.

If you wish to explore the underrated and unconventional areas of Canada, consider a trip to the Northwest Territories and Yukon. These destinations are sparsely populated, yet are full of history and scenic views – from chasing northern lights, gold rush trails to the wilderness, you can explore it all.

  • Day 1: Arrive in Vancouver, fly to Whitehorse, Yukon
  • Day 2-4: Explore Whitehorse
  • Day 5-7: Dawson City (and return)
  • Day 8-14: (or extend to) Yellowknife and return

To kickstart this itinerary, we recommend flying to Vancouver (from overseas). You can book a flight to Whitehorse, Yukon and it will take you there in 2.50 hours. Flights from Toronto take 10+ hours (yup! Canada is HUGE).

Aurora borealis over downtown Whitehorse, capital of the Yukon Territory

Spend the next 3 days in Whitehorse, the capital city of Yukon, and explore the Wildlife Preserve and museums – Old Log Church Museum, Transportation Museum, SS Klondike Historic Site, and Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre.

Enjoy a day at the Miles Canyon, hiking and soaking in views from the suspension bridge – this is where you can clearly see how the rapids and the Canyon gave a tough challenge to the gold-seekers heading to the Klondike Gold Rush.

Miles Canyon Yukon

Where to stay in Whitehorse : Days Inn by Wyndham Whitehorse

Spend days 5 to 7 in Dawson City, another town in Yukon. You can take a flight (1.25 hours), or drive a full day (6 hours of straight driving).

With 2 days in Dawson City, immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of mixed First Nations Heritage and Gold Rush History. You will be busy checking off museums and the colorful arts here.

Where to stay in Dawson City : Value Inn – Downtown Hotel Dawson City

You can conclude your trip here, or head to Yellowknife for another 4-6 days with travel time!

Planning a Canada travel itinerary:  Essential Travel Tips

Here are quick travel tips to prepare for your trip to Canada!

Best time to visit Canada

Canada is a popular summer destination. And there is a good reason – most Canadian cities in the summer are bustling with activities from outdoor cafes, farmer’s markets, to festivals and picnics.

Parks are open with wide arms with tons of camping, hiking, and outdoor activities. Summers bring a lot of crowds and are a peak tourist season.

Girl in Alberta in fall

For sightseeing, late spring and fall are great as well. During this time, there are fewer crowds in popular destinations like the Canadian Rocky Mountains, and cities; and although some camping sites may be closed at the end of the season, you will surely score a nice accommodation in the heart of the city/park.

Some visitors love the cold weather, and some don’t, but winters in Canada are amazing!

Sunwapta Falls viewing area

From experiencing a white Christmas, romantic getaways to snow-ful activities like snowshoeing, skiing, and ice skating in a natural rink, we got it all!

If you are planning a trip to Canada in the winter , dress warmly, and don’t worry about carrying all the ski gear and equipment, as you can easily rent them here. Driving in winter can be a little tricky if you are not used to the icy conditions.

Getting around Canada

From the Canada itineraries above, you have seen how we have clubbed places close to each other. You must have also noticed that we used road trips as an itinerary format, and here is why!

Canada Road Trip Planning: Canmore Alberta

Canada is HUGE, it is the second largest country by area, and even within a province, it will take you a day or more to get around. So,

  • If you are not renting a car, consider a Canadian city itinerary like – Toronto & Niagara Falls, Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec City. These cities have a strong public transportation network (Light Rail Trains, transit buses, Uber) and guided tours
  • For national and provincial parks a car is necessary as passenger trains and public transport are scarce. Canadian Rockies do have local buses, tours, and restricted train routes for visitors to enjoy (note that Greyhound no longer operates in Canada)
  • For cross-country trips, flights are the only way to make the most of your visit to Canada. We get asked by readers, they are visiting Toronto, and they want to explore Banff. Now they are in 2 different provinces, and driving between these two places will take 40+ hours one way, and you don’t want to do that – if you are on a 10-day trip!
  • So use flights – Canada has a few budget/affordable airlines like Swoop and Flair, where you can find flights starting at $50 CAD one way (+ baggage fees, so travel light :))

Learn about Canada road trips here

What to budget for a trip to Canada?

Canada is not a cheap destination 🙂 but you can enjoy an epic vacation with picturesque landscapes, lakes, and historic sites with careful planning!

For exploring cities, we recommend a budget of $150-$175 CAD per day, and this includes

  • 3 to 4-star hotel on a twin share basis ($150/2= $75)
  • Lunch and dinner at a sit-down restaurant – a meal with a drink ($15 to $30)
  • Transportation (daily passes $8), car rental (daily starts $25)
  • Walking tours, museum passes, etc ($10 – $50)

**Flights are not included.

When visiting national parks, you have to pay entry fees which are $20 CAD for vehicles. A daily pass is valid for 24 hours or the next day at 04:00 pm.

Once you are inside the park, you can check out lakes, go on hikes, and enjoy mountain views for free. Additional sightseeing like gondola rides, museums, and historic sites has extra fees!

To save money in Canada, you can surely stay in hostels, approved Airbnbs, or find accommodation in a sister city. For food, you can find affordable grocery stores, and fast-food restaurants (where meals start at $8 CAD), including Canada’s favorite Tim Hortons in every city!

Prices that you see listed in menus and store items are the base price, and then the cashier will add provincial and federal taxes as applicable.

Also, the same Tim Hortons coffee, although it might taste the same, the base prices and taxes will be different in different provinces! Confusing, eh!

Safety in Canada

Canada is a safe and welcoming country. We moved here and have lived for more than a decade in 3 different provinces and never had an issue.

Instances of pickpocketing are also very rare. Some incidences of car breakage and theft may occur in certain places, and the key here is to never leave items inside your vehicle when parking by the roadside!

I have traveled solo, as a couple, and with friends and family – and safety was never a concern. We are sure you will feel welcomed here, just be respectful of others, of the laws of the land, and you will have a great time!

Additional Canada Tips

For a city-only trip, a week is enough. Same for exploring the highlights of the Canadian Rockies, 7 days is a good time frame. Of course, the more time you have, the better!

In 10 days in Canada, you can include a combination of 2-3 cities (spending 2 days in each) and then take a couple of day trips. Ensure these cities are either in the same province or close to each other when traveling by car. To explore cities in different provinces, a flight is the best option to make the most of your trip!

2 weeks in Canada is great to intimately explore a region like the best of Maritimes, Eastern Canada, or all the national parks and landmarks of the Canadian Rockies.

Great question! Driving across the entire length and breadth of Canada will take you 23+ days. If you plan on stopping along the way, visiting cities, small towns, and parks, you will easily need 90 days.

We hope you found our post on Canada itineraries useful in planning your trip! Where will you go next?

how-much-bank-balance-is-required-for-a-canada-tourist-visa

Introduction

Canada, with its breathtaking landscapes, vibrant cities, and welcoming culture, has become an increasingly popular destination for tourists. Whether you’re planning to visit iconic landmarks like Niagara Falls, explore the vibrant streets of Toronto, or immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Canadian Rockies, a tourist visa is essential for most travelers.

One of the key considerations for obtaining a Canada tourist visa is meeting the financial requirements. The Canadian government wants to ensure that visitors have sufficient funds to cover their expenses during their stay without becoming a burden on the country’s resources.

While the specific amount of bank balance required varies depending on various factors such as the duration of your stay and whether you have a sponsor, it is crucial to have a clear understanding of the financial criteria to increase your chances of obtaining a Canada tourist visa.

In this article, we will explore the eligibility requirements for a Canada tourist visa and dive into the details of the bank balance criteria and documentation needed to prove sufficient funds. We will also provide tips to help you meet the financial requirements and successfully obtain your visa.

Eligibility for a Canada Tourist Visa

Before discussing the specific financial requirements, it’s important to understand the general eligibility criteria for a Canada tourist visa. According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), individuals who wish to visit Canada as tourists must meet certain requirements:

  • You must have a valid passport to enter Canada.
  • You must be in good health and be able to convince the immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay.
  • You must have sufficient funds to cover your expenses in Canada.
  • You should not have any criminal record and be admissible to Canada.
  • You may be required to demonstrate strong ties to your home country, such as a job, assets, or family, to prove that you will return after your visit.

It’s important to note that meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee a visa approval. The final decision rests with the immigration officer reviewing your application.

Now that we have a basic understanding of the general eligibility criteria, let’s explore the financial requirements specifically related to the bank balance criteria for a Canada tourist visa.

Financial Requirements for a Canada Tourist Visa

When applying for a Canada tourist visa, you must demonstrate that you have enough funds to cover your expenses during your stay in the country. The Canadian government wants to ensure that visitors can afford the cost of accommodation, transportation, meals, and other necessities without relying on public assistance.

The specific amount of money required as proof of financial support may vary depending on various factors, including the duration of your stay and the number of family members accompanying you. However, as a general guideline, you should be prepared to show evidence of at least CAD $1,000 per month for your stay in Canada.

It’s important to note that this amount is subject to change and it is advisable to check the latest requirements when submitting your application. Additionally, it is important to have funds available not only for the duration of your stay but also for your return journey.

While having sufficient funds is essential, the Canadian government also considers other aspects of your financial situation, such as your ability to pay for your travel expenses and your financial ties to your home country. Having a stable income, employment, or other financial assets can increase your chances of obtaining a tourist visa.

Next, let’s take a closer look at the specific bank balance criteria for a Canada tourist visa and the documentation required to prove that you meet the financial requirements.

Bank Balance Criteria for a Canada Tourist Visa

When applying for a Canada tourist visa, one of the key factors is the bank balance criteria. This refers to the minimum amount of money you need to have in your bank account to prove that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay in Canada. The exact amount required can vary depending on factors such as the duration of your visit and the number of family members accompanying you.

In general, it is recommended to have a bank balance that covers your estimated expenses during your stay in Canada. This includes accommodation, transportation, meals, health insurance, and any other essential expenses. The Canadian government typically suggests having a bank balance of at least CAD $1,000 per month for a single applicant. However, this amount may increase if you have dependents or if the cost of living is higher in the specific region you plan to visit.

In addition to having the required bank balance, it’s important to maintain this balance for a certain period of time before applying for the visa. The specific timeframe can vary, but generally, it is advisable to have the funds in your account for a minimum of three to six months. This helps establish that the funds are genuine and not a temporary deposit made solely for the purpose of the visa application.

Keep in mind that simply having a large amount of money in your bank account does not guarantee a visa approval. Immigration officers will assess various factors, including your financial stability, the source of the funds, and your ability to cover all expenses related to your visit.

Next, let’s explore the documentation you need to provide to prove that you meet the bank balance criteria for a Canada tourist visa.

Documentation to Prove Sufficient Bank Balance

When applying for a Canada tourist visa, you need to provide documentation to prove that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay in the country. This documentation is crucial in demonstrating your financial stability and ability to cover all expenses related to your visit.

Here are some key documents you may need to provide as evidence of your bank balance:

  • Bank Statements: You will need to submit your recent bank statements, typically covering the last three to six months. These statements should clearly show your name, account number, and transaction history. Make sure the statements are official and bear the bank’s logo or stamp.
  • Proof of Income: If you are employed, you should provide documentation of your income, such as pay stubs, employment contracts, or tax returns. This helps establish that you have a regular source of income and can sustain your stay in Canada.
  • Letter of Support: If you have a sponsor, such as a family member or friend in Canada, they can provide a letter of support. This letter should include details about their relationship to you, their financial ability to support your visit, and a commitment to cover your expenses if necessary.
  • Investment or Property Documents: If you have investments, real estate, or other valuable assets, you can provide relevant documents to demonstrate your financial strength.

It’s important to ensure that all the documents you submit are clear, accurate, and in the required format. Additionally, if the documents are in a language other than English or French, you may need to provide a certified translation.

Remember, the documentation required may vary based on your individual circumstances and the discretion of the immigration officer reviewing your application. It is always a good idea to consult the official IRCC website or seek assistance from an immigration professional to ensure you have all the necessary documents in order.

Now, let’s move on to some tips to help you meet the bank balance requirement for a Canada tourist visa.

Tips for Meeting the Bank Balance Requirement

If you’re applying for a Canada tourist visa and need to meet the bank balance requirement, here are some helpful tips to increase your chances of success:

  • Plan your trip and budget wisely: Before applying for the visa, carefully plan your trip, including the duration of your stay and the estimated expenses. Create a realistic budget that covers all necessary expenses and ensure that you have enough funds to support yourself during your visit.
  • Start saving early: It’s advisable to start saving well in advance of your planned trip. This will allow you to accumulate the required bank balance over time and demonstrate a consistent financial history.
  • Maintain a stable financial situation: Immigration officers are more likely to approve visas for individuals with a stable financial situation. If possible, maintain a steady job or income source, and avoid large financial transactions or debts that could raise concerns about your financial stability.
  • Keep funds in one account: It’s recommended to have the required bank balance in one main account. This makes it easier to showcase your financial position and avoids confusion or questions about multiple accounts or transactions.
  • Provide additional financial proof: If you have additional sources of income or financial assets, provide supporting documentation such as investment statements, property ownership documents, or any other proof that demonstrates your financial stability.
  • Include a detailed cover letter: Along with your application, consider including a cover letter explaining your purpose of visit, your financial situation, and how you intend to cover all expenses during your stay. This can provide additional context and clarity to the immigration officer reviewing your application.
  • Seek professional guidance: If you are unsure about the requirements or need assistance with your application, it’s advisable to consult an immigration professional who can guide you through the process and help you put together a strong application.

By following these tips and ensuring that you have the necessary funds and documentation, you can increase your chances of meeting the bank balance requirement and obtaining a Canada tourist visa.

Now, let’s wrap up the article with a summary of the key points discussed.

Obtaining a Canada tourist visa requires meeting certain eligibility criteria, including demonstrating sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your stay. The bank balance requirement plays a crucial role in the visa application process, as it shows your financial stability and ability to support yourself without relying on public assistance.

To meet the financial requirements, it’s important to have a clear understanding of the specific bank balance criteria and provide the necessary documentation, such as bank statements, proof of income, and sponsorship letters if applicable. Additionally, planning your trip and budgeting wisely, starting to save early, and maintaining a stable financial situation can increase your chances of meeting the bank balance requirement.

Remember to carefully review the requirements and guidelines provided by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and seek professional assistance if needed. Being thorough and organized in your application can significantly improve your chances of obtaining a Canada tourist visa.

Whether you’re planning to explore the picturesque landscapes, indulge in the diverse culinary scene, or immerse yourself in the vibrant culture, Canada offers a rich and unforgettable tourist experience. By meeting the financial requirements and successfully obtaining your tourist visa, you can embark on your journey with peace of mind and enjoy all that Canada has to offer.

Advance travel planning and early visa application are important. If you plan to apply for a nonimmigrant visa to come to the United States as a temporary visitor, please review the current wait time for an interview using the tool below. Not all visa applications can be completed on the day of the interview; please read the information below for more details .

Check the estimated wait time for a nonimmigrant visa interview appointment at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

Note: Please check the individual Embassy or Consulate website to determine if your case is eligible for a waiver of the in-person interview.

Applicants scheduling visa appointments in a location different from their place of residence should check post websites for nonresident wait times.

Global Visa Wait Times

Wait Time for Interview

The estimated wait time to receive a nonimmigrant visa interview appointment at a U.S. embassy or consulate and is based on workload and staffing and can vary from week to week. The information provided is an estimate and does not guarantee the availability of an appointment.

Wait Time for Interview Waiver

Wait times for applicants eligible for Interview Waiver are applicable only for locations where applicants schedule appointments to submit their passport and any required documents to a U.S. embassy or consulate. The wait time estimate does not account for the time required for a consular officer to adjudicate the application nor mailing time of passports or other documents. Refer to the website of the Embassy or Consulate Visa Section where you will apply to determine your eligibility for Interview Waiver and for instructions for submitting a nonimmigrant visa application. Note that applicants must be a national or resident of the country where they are applying to be eligible to apply via Interview Waiver.

Qualifications for an Expedited Interview Appointment

Consular sections overseas may be able to expedite your interview date if there is an urgent, unforeseen situation such as a funeral, medical emergency, or school start date. The process to request an expedited nonimmigrant visa interview varies by location. You should refer to the instructions on the website of the Embassy or Consulate Visa Section  where you will interview, or on their online appointment scheduling site. You will need to provide proof of the need for an earlier appointment.

In all cases : You must first submit the online visa application form (DS-160), pay the application fee, and schedule the first available interview appointment. Only at this point will a consular section consider your request for an expedited appointment.

Note: Travel for the purpose of attending weddings and graduation ceremonies, assisting pregnant relatives, participating in an annual business/academic/professional conference, or enjoying last-minute tourism does not qualify for expedited appointments. For such travel, please schedule a regular visa appointment well in advance.

These estimates do not include time required for administrative processing, which may affect some applications. When administrative processing is required, the timing will vary based on individual circumstances of each case.

There are only two possible outcomes for U.S. visa applications. The consular officer will either issue or refuse the visa. If a visa applicant has not established that he or she is eligible for a visa, the consular officer must refuse that application. However, some refused visa applications may require further administrative processing. When administrative processing is required, the consular officer will inform the applicant at the end of the interview. The duration of the administrative processing will vary based on the individual circumstances of each case. At the conclusion of the administrative processing period, the consular officer might conclude that an applicant is now qualified for the visa for which he or she applied. The officer may also conclude that the applicant remains ineligible for a visa. Visa applicants are reminded to apply early for their visas, well in advance of the anticipated travel date.

Important Notice:   Except in cases of emergency travel (i.e. serious illnesses, injuries, or deaths in your immediate family), before making inquiries about status of administrative processing, applicants should wait at least 180 days from the date of interview or submission of supplemental documents, whichever is later.

About Visa Processing Wait Times – Nonimmigrant Visa Applicants

Information about nonimmigrant visa wait times for interviews and visa processing time frames are shown on this website, as well as on U.S. Embassy and Consulate websites worldwide. It should be noted that the “Wait Times for a Nonimmigrant Visa to be Processed” information by country does not include time required for administrative processing. Processing wait time also does not include the time required to return the passport to applicants, by either courier services or the local mail system.

In addition, it is important to thoroughly review all information on the specific  Embassy or Consulate Visa Section website  for local procedures and instructions, such as how to make an interview appointment. Embassy and Consulate websites will also explain any additional procedures for students, exchange visitors and those persons who need an earlier visa interview appointment.

Updated travel information for Mexican citizens coming to Canada

From: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada

News release

Canada and Mexico have maintained a deep, positive and constructive diplomatic partnership over the past 80 years. We have worked to ensure North America is the world’s most competitive economic region and maintain strong bilateral, regional and multilateral cooperation. To support travel and people-to-people connections between Canada and Mexico, while also preserving the integrity of our immigration system, the Government of Canada is adjusting its travel requirements for Mexican citizens.

February 29, 2024, 8:30 a.m. – Ottawa – Canada and Mexico have maintained a deep, positive and constructive diplomatic partnership over the past 80 years.

As of February 29, 2024, at 11:30 p.m. Eastern time, Mexican citizens who hold a valid US non-immigrant visa or have held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years and are travelling by air on a Mexican passport will be able to apply for an electronic travel authorization (eTA). With the high number of Mexican citizens currently holding US visas, the majority will continue to enjoy visa-free travel to Canada. Those who do not meet these conditions will need to apply for a Canadian visitor visa. This responds to an increase in asylum claims made by Mexican citizens that are refused, withdrawn or abandoned. It is an important step to preserve mobility for hundreds of thousands of Mexican citizens, while also ensuring the sound management of our immigration and asylum systems.

The application process for Mexican citizens seeking a work or study permit will not change. Mexican citizens who want to work in Canada will continue to have access to a wide number of existing labour pathways, including the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and the International Mobility Program.

Canada supports ongoing travel, tourism and business with Mexico. We will continue to work with the Government of Mexico to strengthen our regular pathways to immigration, and with our provincial and territorial counterparts to support a system of managed migration as well as to support those in need of protection. Canada is expanding its network of visa application centres in Mexico to better serve these clients. Today’s action will relieve pressure on Canada’s borders, immigration system, housing and social services, while preserving mobility for Mexican citizens who want to come to Canada.

The Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) is a vital example of the mutually beneficial migration that we seek to promote regionally and globally. Canada is ready to work with Mexico to build on this program, through the modernization of a new SAWP bilateral agreement, to offer Mexican workers new opportunities, through the incorporation of year-round primary agriculture and seasonal fish, seafood and primary food processing into the program. This will benefit workers and businesses on both sides of the Canada–Mexico relationship.

Canada is continuously monitoring the impacts of its visa policies for both visa-exempt and visa-required countries, as well as asylum claim trends. These challenges are not limited to one country. Any adjustment to Canada’s travel requirements are made to preserve the integrity and sustainability of our asylum and immigration systems.

More information about these changes, including for people in transit or with upcoming flights, is available on IRCC’s website .

“Mexico is an important partner to Canada. We will continue to welcome Mexican temporary workers, students, visitors and immigrants who bring diverse skills and important contributions to our economy and communities. We strive for balance between the movement of people between our two great countries, and the need to relieve pressure on our immigration system so we can provide protection to those who need it the most.” – The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

Quick facts

Asylum claims made by Mexican citizens reached a record high in 2023 at a time when Canada’s asylum system, housing and social services were already under significant pressure. The majority of these claims (approximately 60%) were either rejected by the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, or withdrawn or abandoned by the applicant.

In 2023 alone, asylum claims from Mexican citizens accounted for 17% of all claims made that year from all nationalities around the world. The country’s asylum claim rate has risen significantly since the visa was first lifted in 2016 (from 260 claims in 2016 to 23,995 claims in 2023).

All eTAs issued to Mexican passports before 11:30 p.m. Eastern time on February 29, 2024, will no longer be valid—except for eTAs linked to Mexican passports with a valid Canadian work or study permit. Mexican citizens travelling to Canada without a valid work or study permit will need to apply for a visitor visa or reapply for a new eTA —if they are eligible.

Mexican citizens holding a valid work or study permit can still travel by air to Canada with their existing eTA as long as it remains valid, and they can continue to study or work in Canada based on the validity and conditions of their permit. Mexican visitors who are already in Canada on an eTA can stay for as long as they are authorized (up to six months from the date they arrive in Canada). However, if they plan to leave Canada and wish to return, they must have the proper travel documents (visa or new eTA).

Most approved visa applicants receive multiple-entry visas, which allow them to visit Canada as many times as they want, for up to 10 years, or until their passport expires.

The eTA is a digital travel document that most visa-exempt travellers need in order to travel to or transit through Canada by air. IRCC first began expanding its eTA program to eligible citizens from visa-required countries in 2017. Mexico will now be among 15 countries whose citizens can to fly to Canada on an eTA, instead of a visa, if they meet certain requirements .

Some citizens of Mexico now require a visa to visit Canada

canada tourist visa in days

  • Published: March 1, 2024

In response to an increase in asylum claimants from Mexico, Canada now requires some Mexican nationals to obtain a visitor visa to enter Canada temporarily.

This change is effective as of February 29, 2024. Previously, all Mexican citizens were eligible to receive an electronic travel authorization (eTA) to enter Canada.

Discover if You Are Eligible for Canadian Immigration

Who will now need a visitor visa?

All Mexican citizens will now need a visa to enter Canada unless they meet all three of the following criteria:

  • They are entering Canada by air, or flying to Canada to transit to another destination;
  • They are coming to Canada for a short-term visit (usually for stays up to six months in length); and
  • They have either: held a Canadian visitor visa (or other temporary resident visa * ) in the past 10 years or a valid United States nonimmigrant visa at the time of their application and travel.

* Temporary resident visas include visitor, work, and study permit-related visas.

Mexican travelers to Canada should also be aware that if they had an eTA before 11:30 pm EST on February 29th, 2024, it will be canceled, and they will need to apply for a new permit. If these individuals are no longer eligible for an eTA after the new changes are implemented, they will now need to apply for a visitor visa.

How do these changes impact Mexicans already in Canada as visitors?

Visitors are temporary residents in Canada who do not have a study or work permit associated with their stay (usually these are travelers on business or tourist trips to Canada). These individuals will continue to be allowed to stay in Canada for the duration they were previously approved for.

However, their eTAs will be canceled. If these visitors wish to re-enter Canada after leaving, they will need to apply for a visitor visa, or a new eTA if they meet all the above eligibility criteria.

How do these changes impact Mexicans already in Canada on a work or study permit?

Mexican citizens already in Canada on a study or work permit will not have their eTAs canceled. These individuals will retain their previous eTA and may continue to travel on it if the document is valid.

If these individuals are applying for a new work or study permit, they will automatically be issued a visa or eTA (based on their eligibility) when their work or study permit is approved. They will not need to apply separately for a visa or eTA.

Note: In all instances, an eTA is for air travel only. Even if individuals have a valid eTA, they will need a valid visitor visa if they plan to travel to Canada by car, bus, train, or boat (including cruise ship, even if travelers do not leave the cruise ship).

What can Mexican citizens do if they had a valid study or work permit at the time of the change, but their eTA was still canceled?

These individuals may be eligible to have their eTAs reactivated. To find out if this is the case, they can:

  • Send a web form request to Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC);
  • Complete all required fields; and
  • Include the code “EMVR2024” in the text box.

If these individuals are not eligible to have their eTA reactivated, they will need to submit a new eTA or visitor visa application, based on the new requirements.

Customs Duty Information

What is a customs duty.

Customs Duty is a tariff or tax imposed on goods when transported across international borders. The purpose of Customs Duty is to protect each country's economy, residents, jobs, environment, etc., by controlling the flow of goods, especially restrictive and prohibited goods, into and out of the country.

Dutiable refers to articles on which Customs Duty may have to be paid. Each article has a specific duty rate, which is determined by a number of factors, including where you acquired the article, where it was made, and what it is made of. Also, anything you bring back that you did not have when you left the United States must be "declared." For example, you would declare alterations made in a foreign country to a suit you already owned, and any gifts you acquired outside the United States. American Goods Returned (AGR) do not have to be declared, but you must be prepared to prove to U.S. Customs and Border Protection the articles are AGR or pay Customs duty.

The Customs Duty Rate is a percentage. This percentage is determined by the total purchased value of the article(s) paid at a foreign country and not based on factors such as quality, size, or weight. The Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) provides duty rates for virtually every existing item. CBP uses the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States Annotated (HTSUS), which is a reference manual that the provides the applicable tariff rates and statistical categories for all merchandise imported into the U.S.

Duty-Free Shop articles sold in a Customs duty-free shop are free only for the country in which that shop is located. Therefore, if your acquired articles exceed your personal exemption/allowance, the articles you purchased in Customs duty-free shop, whether in the United States or abroad, will be subject to Customs duty upon entering your destination country. Articles purchased in a American Customs duty-free shop are also subject to U.S. Customs duty if you bring them into the United States. For example, if you buy alcoholic beverages in a Customs duty-free shop in New York before entering Canada and then bring them back into the United States, they will be subject to Customs duty and Internal Revenue Service tax (IRT).

Determining Customs Duty

The flat duty rate will apply to articles that are dutiable but that cannot be included in your personal exemption, even if you have not exceeded the exemption. For example, alcoholic beverages. If you return from Europe with $200 worth of purchases, including two liters of liquor, one liter will be duty-free under your returning resident personal allowance/exemption. The other will be dutiable at 3 percent, plus any Internal Revenue Tax (IRT) that is due.

A joint declaration is a Customs declaration that can be made by family members who live in the same household and return to the United States together. These travelers can combine their purchases to take advantage of a combined flat duty rate, no matter which family member owns a given item. The combined value of merchandise subject to a flat duty rate for a family of four traveling together would be $4,000. Purchase totals must be rounded to the nearest dollar amount.

Tobacco Products

Returning resident travelers may import tobacco products only in quantities not exceeding the amounts specified in the personal exemptions for which the traveler qualifies (not more than 200 cigarettes and 100 cigars if arriving from other than a beneficiary country and insular possession). Any quantities of tobacco products not permitted by a personal exemption are subject to detention, seizure, penalties, abandonment, and destruction. Tobacco products are typically purchased in duty-free stores, on sea carriers operating internationally or in foreign stores. These products are usually marked "Tax Exempt. For Use Outside the United States," or "U.S. Tax Exempt For Use Outside the United States."

For example, a returning resident is eligible for the $800 duty-free personal exemption every 31 days, having remained for no less than 48 hours beyond the territorial limits of the United States except U.S. Virgin Islands, in a contiguous country which maintains free zone or free port, has remained beyond the territorial limits of the United States not to exceed 24 hours. This exemption includes not more than 200 cigarettes and 100 cigars:

  • If the resident declares 400 previously exported cigarettes and proves American Goods Returning (AGR) , the resident would be permitted or allowed to bring back his AGR exempt from Customs duty.
  • If the resident declares 400 cigarettes, of which 200 are proven AGR or previously exported and 200 not AGR or not previously exported, the resident would be permitted to bring back his 200 previously exported cigarettes tax and Internal Revenue Tax (IRT) free under his exemption.
  • The tobacco exemption is available to each adult 21 years of age or over.

In December 2014, President Obama announced his intention to re-establish diplomatic relations with Cuba. The President did not lift the embargo against Cuba. Absent a democratic or transitional government in Cuba, lifting the embargo requires a legislative statutory change. Since the announcement, however, the Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has amended the Cuba Assets Control Regulations (CACR), effective January 16, 2015, to authorize travel within certain categories to and from Cuba and to allow certain imports from and exports to Cuba.

All travelers, including those from Cuba, must comply with all applicable laws and regulations. This includes the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (“HTSUS”) (2016) limitations on personal exemptions and rules of duty extended to non-residents and returning U.S. residents.

Persons subject to U.S. jurisdiction are authorized to engage in all transactions, including payments necessary to import certain goods and services produced by independent Cuban entrepreneurs as determined by the State Department and set forth in the State Department’s Section 515.582 list located at FACT SHEET: U.S. Department of State Section 515.582 List . On October 17, 2016, the Office of Foreign Asset Control relaxed restrictions so authorized travelers, arriving direct from Cuba, are now able to bring Cuban merchandise for personal use back to the United States and qualify for the U.S. Resident exemption (HTSUS 9804.00.65, which allows up to $800 total in goods, and adults 21 and older may include 1 liter of alcohol, 200 cigarettes, and 100 cigars). This exemption also applies to travelers, arriving from any country in the world, with declared Cuban merchandise.

Declared amounts in excess of the exemption are subject to a flat 4% rate of duty, and any applicable IRS taxes, pursuant to HTSUS 9816.00.20 and 19 CFR 148.101, which impose a duty rate of 4% of the fair retail value on goods from a Column 2 country.

Regarding goods: The Department of State will, in accordance with the State Department’s Section 515.582, issue a list of prohibited goods. Placement on the list means that any listed good falls within certain Sections and Chapters of the HTSUS which do not qualify for this exception.

Regarding entrepreneurs : The Cuban entity must be a private business, such as a self-employed entrepreneur or other private entity, not owned or controlled by the Government of Cuba. Travelers engaging in these transactions are required to obtain evidence that demonstrates the goods purchased were obtained from a Cuban entrepreneur, as described above, and should be prepared to furnish evidence of such to U.S. Government authorities upon request. Evidence may include a copy of the entrepreneur’s license and/or an invoice and/or purchase order demonstrating the goods were purchased from a specific Cuban entrepreneur. Whether a traveler presents adequate evidence that a good qualifies from importation and that it was bought from a licensed independent Cuban entrepreneur shall be determined on a case-by-case basis by the inspecting CBP officer.

Imports under Section 515.582 (i.e., imports from licensed independent entrepreneurs not on the Department of State’s prohibited list) must comply with all current U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) formal and informal entry requirements, as applicable. This means that, while there is no value cap on the amount of goods that may be imported under this provision, the applicable duties in the HTSUS must be considered.

In particular, HTSUS 9804.00.65 allows for the duty-free importation of personal-use articles from a Column 2 country when the fair retail value of such goods is under $800. Also see 19 C.F.R. 148.33. HTSUS 9816.00.20 establishes a duty rate of 4% of the fair retail value for personal-use articles under $1,000 imported from a Column 2 country. Thus, any articles imported under this section for personal use with a value of under $800 can be imported duty free, and any articles imported for personal use with a value between $800 and $1800, will be subject to a flat 4% duty rate. Any articles valued over $1800, regardless of whether for personal use, will be subject to entry and should be classified, appraised, and assessed duty appropriately under the specific HTSUS Column 2 rates. Also see 19 C.F.R. 148.101 and 148.102. Any commercial importation, i.e., not for personal use, is subject to entry requirements and payment of applicable duties, fees, and taxes.

While these revised regulations may facilitate certain travel and trade with Cuba, all other laws and regulations applicable to international travel and the importation/exportation of goods remain in full effect. This means that all United States agency requirements applicable to a particular importation must be met and fully complied with, such as the regulations of the Food and Drug Administration, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

Alcoholic Beverages

One American liter (33.8 fl. oz.) of alcoholic beverages may be included in your returning resident personal exemption if:

  • You are at least 21 years old.
  • It is intended exclusively for your personal use and not for sale.
  • It does not violate the laws of the state in which you arrive.

Federal and state regulations allow you to bring back one liter of an alcoholic beverage for personal use duty-free. However, states may allow you to bring back more than one liter, but you will have to pay any applicable Customs duty and IRT.

While federal regulations do not specify a limit on the amount of alcohol you may bring back beyond the personal exemption amount, unusual quantities may raise suspicions that you are importing the alcohol for other purposes, such as for resale. CBP officers enforce the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) laws, rules, and regulations and are authorized to make on-the-spot determinations that an importation is for commercial purposes. If such determination is made, it may require you to obtain a permit and file a formal entry to import the alcohol before the alcohol is released. If you intend to bring back a substantial quantity of alcohol for your personal use, you should contact the U.S. Port of Entry (POE) through which you will be re-entering and make prior arrangements for the importation.

Also, state laws might limit the amount of alcohol you can bring in without a license. If you arrive in a state that has limitations on the amount of alcohol you may bring in without a license, that state's law will be enforced by CBP, even though it may be more restrictive than federal regulations. We recommend that you check with the state government about their limitations on quantities allowed for personal importation and additional state taxes that may apply. Ideally, this information should be obtained before traveling.

In brief, for both alcohol and cigarettes, the quantities eligible for duty-free treatment may be included in your $800 or $1,600 returning resident personal exemption, just as any other purchase should be. But unlike other kinds of merchandise, amounts beyond those discussed here as being duty-free are taxed, even if you have not exceeded, or even met, your personal exemption. For example, your exemption is $800 and you bring back three liters of wine and nothing else, two of those liters will be dutiable and IR taxed. Federal law prohibits business-to-private consumer shipping of alcoholic beverages by mail within the United States.

How to Pay Customs Duty

If you owe Customs duty, you must pay it before the conclusion of your CBP processing. You may pay it in any of the following ways:

  • U.S. currency only.
  • Personal check in the exact amount, drawn on a U.S. bank, made payable to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. You must present identification, such as a passport or U.S. driver's license. CBP does not accept checks bearing second-party endorsement.
  • Government check, money order or traveler's check if the amount does not exceed the duty owed by more than $50.

In some locations/POEs, you may pay duty with either MasterCard or VISA credit cards.

Increased Duty Rates

Items from certain countries.

Under what is known as its "301" authority, the United States may impose a much higher than normal duty rate on products from certain countries. Currently, the United States has imposed a 100 percent rate of duty on certain products of Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, The Federal Republic of Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the Ukraine. If you should bring more of any of these products back with you than fall within your exemption or flat rate of duty, (see below) you will pay as much in duty as you paid for the product or products.

While most of the products listed are not the type of goods that travelers would purchase in sufficient quantities to exceed their exemption, diamonds from the Ukraine are subject to the 100 percent duty and might easily exceed the exemption amount.

For information on countries that may become subject to a higher than normal duty rate, check the Department of Commerce Web site.

Countries With Free or Reduced Customs Duty Rates

The United States gives Customs duty preferences-that is, conditionally free or subject to reduced rates-to certain designated beneficiary developing countries under a trade program called the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP). Some products that would otherwise be dutiable are not when they are wholly the growth, product, or manufacture of a beneficiary GSP country. Visit the Office of United States Trade Representative website for additional GSP information.

  • Many products from Caribbean and Andean countries are exempt from duty under the Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI), Caribbean Basin Trade Partnership Act, Andean Trade Preference Act and the Andean Trade Promotion and Drug Eradication Act.
  • Many products from certain sub-Saharan African countries are exempt from duty under the African Growth and Opportunity Act.
  • Most products from Israel, Jordan, Chile and Singapore may also enter the United States either free of duty or at a reduced rate under the U.S. free trade agreements with those countries.
  • The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) went into effect in 1994. If you are returning from Canada or Mexico , your goods are eligible for free or reduced duty rates if they were grown, manufactured, or produced in Canada or Mexico, as defined by the Act.

Additional information on these special trade programs can be found on the CBP Web site.

Household Effects & Personal Effects - Customs Duty Guidance

Household effects conditionally included are duty-free. These include such items as furniture, carpets, paintings, tableware, stereos, linens, and similar household furnishings; tools of the trade, professional books, implements, and instruments.

You may import household effects you acquired abroad duty-free if:

  • You used them abroad for no less than one year.
  • They are not intended for any other person or for sale.

For Customs purposes, clothing, jewelry, photography equipment, portable radios, and vehicles are considered personal effects and cannot be brought in duty-free as household effects. However, duty is usually waived on personal effects more than one year of age. All vehicles are dutiable.

Mailing and Shipping Goods - Customs Duty Guidance

Unaccompanied purchases are goods you bought on a trip that are being mailed or shipped to you in the United States. In other words, you are not carrying the goods with you when you return. If your unaccompanied purchases are from an insular possession (IP) or a Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI) country and are being imported within 30 days and sent directly from those locations to the United States, you may enter them as follows:

  • Up to $1,600 in goods will be duty-free under your personal exemption if the merchandise is from an IP.
  • Up to $800 in goods will be duty-free if it is from a CBI or Andean country.
  • Any additional amount, up to $1,000, in goods will be dutiable at a flat rate (3%).

To take advantage of the Customs duty-free exemption for unaccompanied tourist purchases (mailing/shipping) from an IP or CBI country:

Step 1. At place and time of purchase, ask your merchant to hold your item until you send him or her a copy of CBP Form 255 (Declaration of Unaccompanied Articles), which must be affixed to the package when it is shipped.

Step 2. (a) On your declaration form (CBP Form 6059B), list everything you acquired on your trip that is accompanying you. You must also complete a separate Declaration of Unaccompanied Articles form (CBP Form 255) for each package or container that will be sent to you after you arrive in the United States. This form may be available where you make your purchase. If not, you may find the form on the CBP website.

Step 3. When you return to the United States, the CBP officer will: (a) collect Customs duty and any tax due on the dutiable goods you have brought with you; (b) verify your list of unaccompanied articles with your sales receipts; (c) validate your CBP Form 255 to determine if your purchases are duty-free under your personal exemption ($1,600 or $800) or if the purchases are subject to a flat rate of duty.

Step 4. Two copies of the three-part CBP Form 255 will be returned to you. Send the yellow copy of the CBP Form 255 to the foreign shopkeeper or vendor holding your purchase, and keep the other copy for your records.

Step 5. When the merchant gets your CBP Form 255, he or she must place it in an envelope and attach the envelope securely to the outside wrapping of the package or container. The merchant must also mark each package "Unaccompanied Purchase." Please remember that each package or container must have its own CBP Form 255 attached , the most important step to follow in order to gain the benefits allowed under this procedure.

Step 6. If your package has been mailed, the U.S. Postal Service will deliver it after it clears Customs. If you owe duty, the Postal Service will collect the duty along with a postal handling fee. If a freight service transports your package, they will notify you of its arrival and you must go to their office holding the shipment and complete the CBP entry procedure. If you owe duty or tax, you will need to pay it at that time in order to secure the release of the goods. You could also hire a customs customhouse broker to do this for you. However, be aware that customhouse brokers are private businesses and are not CBP employees, and they charge fees for their services.

If freight or express packages from your trip landed in the U.S. before you return and you have not made arrangements to pick them up, CBP will authorize their placement into general order bonded warehouse or public storage after 15 days (days for perishable, flammable, explosives). This storage and all other related charges (transportation, demurrage, handling) will be at your risk and expense. If the goods are not claimed within six months, they will be sold at auction.

Per U.S. Postal Service regulations, packages sent by mail and not claimed within 30 days from the date of U.S. arrival will be returned to the sender unless the amount of duty is being protested.
