Once the private hunting grounds of the maharaja, Bandipur is unapologetically wild terrain. Elephants roam in large herds, deer stare at you brazenly and peafowl flit in and out as they deem fit. Nestled at the foothills of the Nilgiris, Bandipur has had a long tryst with tigers. One of the thirty reserves identified across the country to save the tiger and its habitat, it’s also one of the last refuges of the endangered Asiatic wild elephant. The Bandipur Safari Lodge is your way of being a part of this ecological haven.
We all have a role to play in maintaining the ecological balance. Nothing makes you more aware of how much we take for granted than a visit to the wild. Be prepared to leave an environmental activist, as the wildlife experience is known to touch the deepest recesses of your mind.
The sheer majesty of elephants so aware of their power, the enormity of the forest and its ancient secrets, the unblinking gaur that dares you to try stare him down, and if you’re lucky, a glimpse of a tiger or leopard, arrogance clearly written on their feline features: is a resounding lesson in learning to respect nature. Our guests are taken every evening to the jungle with a trained naturalist for company.
Bird-lovers will not suffer for company. With over two hundred species of birds including peafowl, hornbills, woodpeckers, the Crested Hawk Eagle, wagtails, blue jays, partridges, etc. one can spend hours trying to spot as many of these brightly hued winged creatures as possible.
The premises are filled with herbs, medicinal and ornamental plants. The garden, by itself, inspires the naturalist in you. If ever your curiosity gets ahead of your knowledge, our naturalists are at hand: they’ll clear any doubts you might have. End the day on a peaceful note, with the cicadas taking over the night shift from the birds: the perfect accompaniment to your campfire barbecue dinner.
Though Bandipur is around-the-year tourist destination, summers are the best time for wildlife sightings. March to May being the dry season, the animals come out of hiding and can be spotted by the watering holes. But for bird-watchers, the winter months are a better bet, for November to January, many migratory birds from the North, especially the Himalayas come down south to roost.

Bandipur: a surprise at every turn.
The jeep ground to a halt and the engine was killed, abruptly leaving us with the lush silence of the forest. An unseen flame-back called. And then we heard it – a branch broken, intermittent noises coming progressively closer, the thud of logs or stones being dislodged, and the crack of six-inch boles being snapped effortlessly.
The Monsoon and a Hundred Stories
“Can you hear that, madam?” Basavanna, our naturalist, turned around in his front seat and whispered. I strained my ears, not unlike the spotted deer we had seen some time back. The jungle seemed still, the cicadas having ceased their incessant song for the moment. I wondered what I should be hearing – a warning call, or perhaps some animal making its way
Beyond the Big Cats
There is a sense of excitement when one sets off on a safari: the nip in the air and the fragrance of a fresh forest waking up to the warm rays of the sun, all tingle the senses. What hidden treasures will the jungle reveal this time? This being our first visit to Bandipur National Park, the anticipation was even more! The jungle is an immersing experience of sights, sounds and smells; there is so much more to a forest than the big cats.

Once at the Mysore railway station take a connecting train to Chamarajanagar which is 48 km away from Bandipur. You can also take a bus or book a cab from Mysore rail station to reach Bandipur.
By Road – Several private and government run buses from all major cities of Karnataka will take you to Bandipur. You can also hire cabs or drive your own car. Please make sure to avoid late night and early morning travel as movement of vehicles are restricted in the forest range during this time.

Apart from spotting the tigers and elephants, there are many interesting things to do in the National Park. Here are some of the must dos.
Go On A Jungle Safari
When it comes to safari in Bandipur National Park there are a variety of options. One can either choose between a Bus, Jeep or Elephant safari. Bus can accommodate anywhere between 14 to 25 people and takes about 45 minutes to complete. For a more personalized experience opt for the jeep safari that will take about 1.5 to 2 hours. Next is the elephant safari that stretches for approximately 20 minutes. As Bandipur is one of the best places to spot wild animals in their natural habitat, safari is a must do activity while here.
Enjoy Camping Within The Wild
Set up a tent around the Bandipur National Park to enjoy camping with friends and family. Keep your camera ready to capture the amazing flora and fauna around. However before doing so make sure you take prior permission from concerned authorities.
Trek For Some Breathtaking Views
Trekking too needs prior permission from the Karnataka Forest Department but all the efforts put in is completely worthwhile. Trekking through the different segments of the reserve will take you through lakes, rivers, waterfalls and if lucky, can spot some animals too. All treks have to be mandatorily accompanied by a guide.
Bird Watching To Spot Rare Species
Over 200 spectacular species of birds, both local and migratory ones are sure to delight tourists. This is a heaven for birdwatchers. The rare species are a little difficult to find but birds like peafowl, woodpeckers, Indian Pitta, hawk eagles, kingfishers, ospreys can be easily spotted.

Concluding Thoughts
Always follow the guidelines and stick to your guide’s instructions. Drinking, smoking and campfires are strictly prohibited inside the park. Show some respect to the animals by not creating nuisance and spoiling their habitat. With all the required information at hand, make sure to implement them while visiting Bandipur National Park and tiger reserve for a fascinating experience.
Some FAQ’s For You
As summer in Bandipur is very hot and monsoon has heavy rainfall, the months just after monsoon from September to February is the best time to visit. During this time the national park looks greener and much more beautiful.
Bandipur National Park safari timings in the morning are at 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30 am and evening timings are from 3:30, 4:30 and 5:30 pm. It’s mandatory for all safari vehicles to exit the forest before 6:30 pm.
One needs to be at the right place at the right time to spot the tigers. The safaris take you quite deep into the forest but spotting the tigers is purely based on luck. However chances of spotting them are more during the summer months as this is the time animals come out in search of food and water.

Bandipur National Park
Bandipur National Park, established in 1974 as a tiger reserve under Project Tiger, is a national park located in the Indian state of Karnataka, which is the state with the second-highest tiger population in India. These forests are contiguous with Nagarhole, Wayanad, and Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, hence providing safe haven for a number of species – notably the Indian Elephant and Royal Bengal Tiger.
Once a private Hunting Reserve for the Maharajas of Mysore, this landscape is now part of the Nilgiri Biosphere reserve – one of India’s conservation success stories.
Bandipur has a variety of biomes including dry deciduous forests, moist deciduous forests, and shrublands. The wide range of habitats helps support a diverse range of organisms. The park is flanked by the Kabini River in the north and the Moyar River in the south..

About Bandipur national Park
The open-ness of the Bandipur park provides for huge Elephant herds and one of the last strongholds of the Indian Wild Dogs – the extremely intelligent pack hunters of the Indian Forest. The Kabini River separates Bandipur from Nagarhole, yet the denizens are able to traverse freely between the 2 parks when the water levels recede.
The elusive Black (melanistic) Leopard has been spotted in Bandipur national park on more than one occasion, and it is believed that there are multiple individuals living inside the park. Therefore, it is safe to say that a tiger safari in India is incomplete without experiencing all that Bandipur National Park has to offer.

His majesty, the national animal of India. The Royal Bengal Tiger is considered by many naturalists as one of the most powerful apex predators. You catch a glimpse of this big cat in action at the Bandipur National Park.
A black panther is the melanistic colour variant of the leopard (Panthera pardus) and the jaguar (Panthera onca). Black panthers of both species have excess black pigments, but their typical rosettes are also present.
It is the largest land mammal on the Asian continent. They inhabit dry to wet forest and grassland habitats in 13 range countries spanning Southeast Asia. Asian elephants have adapted to surviving on resources that vary based on the area.

More about Bandipur national park safari:
- There is a total of four safari slots. Two slots in the morning and two slots in the evening
- I prefer going in the late evening safari slot
- Each Safari bus will have the capacity for 14 seats. All the seats are Window seats.
- Bandipur Safari Charges for Indian adults are Rs. 300 and Safari charge for foreigners is Rs. 1100.
- Handycam charge is Rs. 1000.
- For children from 6 years to 12 years, Safari charge is 150 rupees.
Bandipur national park Jeep Safari (also night safari) from Gudalur side:
Bandipur safari is also conducted from the Gudalur, Tamilnadu side. You can get a jeep at the Gudalur Bus stand. A jeep costs around 1600 rupees and can accommodate around 6 to 7 persons.
Note: I would not encourage anyone to pay Jeep wala and go for the night safari. As, I have been sighted many a time by my blog followers about the its cons. Here is a snippet of the comment:
As far as concerned, please don’t encourage the Jeep walas from Gudalur region since it’s very illegal and you are not assured of your safety. Don’t encourage anyone for night safaris. Sorry. Your pictures are nice.
Bandipur night safari:
For Bandipur night safari, you need to understand that Bandipur national park is shared between two states i.e. Karnataka and Tamilnadu. Bandipur night safari is illegal. However, you can still go for the night safari or at least very early morning safari. you can ask the guys operating jeep safari at Gudalur bus stand. A few years back, those guys took us for the night safari which was a nice experience. Night safari is not conducted by the Official Bandipur safari guys. I am not sure about the trails that these Jeep guys from Gudalur cover but I am sure they cover a lot of places. It’s advisable that you ask things in and out before setting out on the Jeep safari option
Bandipur national park is the part of the Karnataka forest. While Bandipur national park is called ‘Mudumalai national park’ in Tamilnadu side. Bandipur safari that you mostly hear is from the Karnataka side. While on the Tamilnadu side called Mudumalai reserve forest, there is no such government procurement for the safari. How to reach Bandipur national park:
The best way to reach Bandipur reserve forest is to book your own vehicle. Distance from Bangalore to Bandipur is around 230 Kms. And it almost takes five to six hours to drive there.
Road conditions to Bandipur:
From Bangalore, main routes to Bandipur passes through Mysore. There are two routes to Mysore from Bangalore:
- Via Ramanagara, Mandya, Srirangapatna
- Via Kanakpura, Malavalli
The first route (Via Mandya, Ramanagara) is better. The road condition is good and it’s a four-lane road that means two vehicles can travel in opposite directions. The second route via Kanakpura is just a double road that means only single vehicle can travel in opposite directions. I would not recommend passing through Mysore while driving to Bandipur. On the outskirts of Mysore, a new six-lane bypass road has been constructed. It better to take that road.
Road condition from the outskirts is not so good. Seems government is widening the road from Mysore towards Bandipur. So first 15 Km stretch of road from the outskirts of Mysore will not let you drive above 30 Kmph. After that, the road condition is good.
Bandipur highway view
Bandipur Entry and exit timings:
The Bandipur reserve forest entry timing is 6 AM in the morning from both Karnataka and Tamilnadu side. Try to be there at the entrance around 5:30 AM. There will be a long queue of vehicles at the Bandipur reserve entry point on weekends. Exit timing for the last vehicle is 8.30 PM from both Karnataka side and Tamilnadu side. A vehicle is given half an hour to cross the reserve forest. That means a vehicle should exit the forest by 9 PM. The total distance to be covered within the forest in between entry and exit is around 14 Kms.
Stay in Bandipur National Park or Reserve Forests, Karnataka side:
There are many places where you can stay if you want to visit the Bandipur national park. Based upon your choice, you choose where to stay and spend your wildlife time.
Staying options and resorts in Gundlupete town:
Gundlupete is a small town situated 15 Kms before the Bandipur national park. It is 75 Kms from Mysore. So, if you are just planning to do Bandipur safari, you can stay in Gundlupete and start in the morning to Bandipur national park and get safari tickets and do safari and return. Please note that on Weekends and especially on long weekends, the Bandipur safari tickets are sold out and pre-booked. So please do Advance Bandipur safari ticket booking well in advance. Sometimes, hotel guys also arrange the safari tickets for you. Also, please consider Gundlupete as a staying option only if you were unable to get an accommodation inside Bandipur reserve forest.
Here are some of the staying options in Gundlupete:
- Hotel Misty rock
- Nijaguna resort and spa
- Bandipur wildlife resort
Staying option & resorts near the Bandipur reserve forest entrance:
You can also stay near to the entrance of the Bandipur national park. Some of the hotels nearer to the entrance of the Bandipur reserve forest from Mysore side are:
- Jungle lodges, Bandipur
Staying inside Bandipur reserve forests:
Understand that no public hotels are allowed inside the reserve forests. Even if some hotels claim to be situated inside the reserve forest, check out the location first. In my view there is only one stay that can be made inside the Bandipur reserve is of Government stay. Here is the link of official website for booking jungle stay inside Bandipur reserve forest .
forest guest house lodge, Bandipur
On the outskirts of the Bandipur reserve forest:
There are some other options as well if you are looking for a stay far from the road traffic and in a tranquil ambiance. Here are some of the hotels on Mangala village road, Bandipur forest:
- Tiger ranch
- Windflower resorts and spa
- Deer valley resort
- The country club
Staying options in Bandipur National Park, Tamilnadu Side:
As mentioned before, Bandipur reserve forest is divided into two states of Karnataka and Tamilnadu. Karnataka side is called ‘Bandipur National Park’ and Tamilnadu side is called ‘Mudumalai National Park’. Consider staying on the Tamilnadu side of the Bandipur reserve forest if you are planning to go further to Ooty or Munnar or towards Kerala.
Note: Tamilnadu side of Bandipur national park also called as ‘Mudumalai reserve forest’ is heavily encroached with hotels and resorts. Road condition is also not so good on Tamilnadu border side.
Staying inside Mudumalai tiger reserve:
Here is the official Govt. website for booking staying inside Mudumalai national park
Resorts near Masinagudi side (En route Ooty):
There are a lot of hotels on the Masinagudi side. Masinagudi lies en route to Ooty. There are 36 hairpin bends from Masinagudi to Ooty. Following are a few resorts near Masinagudi:
- Inn the wild

Is there any additional charges for safari vehicles for the safari….or including vehicle charges is 300/-for adults…?

Night safaris are illegal and should not be encouraged. One should also think of not disturbing the wildlife all the time – only then you are a true lover of wildlife.

Bandipur National Park and Tiger Reserve
Once a hunting reserve for Maharaja of Mysore Kingdom, Bandipur National Park & Tiger Reserve stands over 874 sq. km area today for the sole purpose of protecting the endangered wildlife species and saving the valuable sandalwood trees.
The reserve was declared a forest Tiger Reserve in 1973 by NTCA under the protection of Project Tiger – Govt.’s ambitious campaign to save Indian Tiger species .

History of Bandipur National Park
The foremost Bandipur Sanctuary was conceptualized and created in 1931. The project was patronized by Maharaja of the kingdom of Mysore. What he created was a protected area of 90 sq. km named as Venugopala Wildlife Park .
Nearly two decades post-independence, around 800 sq. km of an area was amalgamated to Venugopala Wildlife Park. Thus, Bandipur National Park and Tiger Reserve came into being under the tiger project. This was in 1973.
Later, this reserve became an essential part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve , which is the largest wildlife protected zone in South Indi a . In addition to the Bandipur Tiger Reserve, the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve includes 643 sq. km of the adjoining Nagarhole National Park , 320 sq. km of Mudumalai National Park and 344 sq. km of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary.
Together they form 2,183 sq. km of the protected zone which is the largest habitat of wild elephants in South Asia.
