STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — It’s time to get ready for thrilling rides and experiences, as Six Flags Great Adventure reopens for the 2022 season on Saturday.

The Jackson, N.J., theme park is inviting guests to experience a wide range of enhancements and see dozens of projects in the work that will open later this summer, including new dining, rides, events and animal experiences.

Six Flags will open on Saturday and Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. It will then open for spring break from April 9 to 22, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Six Flags Wild Safari Drive-Thru Adventure will also operate from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days this weekend, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily from April 9 to 24.

The theme park and safari will then open only on weekends and some Fridays until daily operation begins starting May 26. Park hours may vary, so be sure to check Six Flags’ park operating schedule for more information.

If there are no operating hours listed for a particular date, the park is closed.

Six Flags hiring

Six Flags will open only on weekends and some Fridays until daily operation begins starting May 26. Six Flags Great Adventure

This year will feature beautification and modernization efforts throughout the theme park and Wild Safari.

These include: increased capacity and streamlined operations in rides, food service and admissions; new theming and reintroduction of several popular rides for daredevils and junior thrill-seekers; aesthetic and comfort enhancements in both parks; the debut of popular food brands and new dining options; a major summer event and more guest amenities.

Medusa returns

Thrill-seekers can look forward to the return of the snake-haired Gorgon to Frontier Adventures — a seven-looping beast unveiled in 1999 as the world’s first floorless, top-rail roller coaster, Medusa.

The ride was re-branded to BIZARRO just 10 years later, but will return in its original form with a new color palette, logo and Gold Rush-era back story, according to Six Flags.

Jr. Thrillseekers

Six Flags will also complete its two-year renovation of the action-packed section called Jr. Thrillseekers.

Formerly known as Safari Kids, the park’s largest family area will offer eight rides, all perfect for parents to enjoy with their young children, like Lil’ Devil Coaster — the kiddie counterpart to Jersey Devil Coaster — and Barnstormer, which is returning for 2022. The section will also feature shopping, dining and new, shaded seating.

Single-rider lines

Additionally, Six Flags will add single-rider lines to Jersey Devil Coaster, El Toro, Nitro and Medusa. These lines shorten wait times by filling in every available seat.

New Flash Pass technology

And to improve the guest experience through enhanced ride line speed and efficiency, Six Flags will transition its’ THE FLASH Pass Q-bot to mobile Q SMART technology. Through a mobile app, guests can maximize their time in the park and spend less time waiting in line and more time enjoying rides, dining, shopping and entertainment.

New mobile app features

Another new mobile app feature will allow guests to add their pass to their Google Pay Wallet or Apple Wallet to expedite the front gate entrance experience and reduce wait time.

Six Flags Wild Safari Drive-Thru Adventure: An Interactive Zoo Experience You Won’t Want To Miss

If you ever thought of going on a safari, here’s your chance— in NJ. The wildly popular Six Flags Wild Safari Drive-Thru Adventure in Jackson opens the weekend of April 1 and is teeming with over 1,200 exotic animals from six continents ready to greet you and the whole family. Drive your car down a winding path where African elephants, reticulated giraffes, and red rhinos pass by your window (and maybe even stop traffic) in areas that mimic their natural habitats. Ready to go? Scroll down for all the details for going on a wild adventure at Six Flags Wild Safari—no passport needed. ( Feature Photo Credit: Six Flags Safari )

All the animals at Six Flags Wild Safari Drive-Thru

Six Flags Wild Safari Drive-Thru Adventure is unique because you never have to leave your car. The drive-thru is separated into 12 sections to show how animals live in distinct natural habitats. You’ll have the opportunity to watch a Roosevelt Elk run in The Americas, see an ostrich peck at your window in Afrikka, or view an African Lion at rest in Kingsland. As you wind around the loop, slow down by Baboon Village. This fan-favorite is where you can watch this rowdy troop jump all over a large metal piece in their exhibit (this metal piece is actually from “Lightning Loops,” a Six Flags Great Adventure rollercoaster that was deconstructed years ago). And not to worry, the baboons are no longer allowed to jump on your car like they were years ago ( whew ).

Here’s what to know about the Drive-Thru before you go

The Six Flags Wild Safari Park is a total of 4.5 miles of paved road, and the drive-thru timing depends on the animals’ behavior (if they are out and about) and the traffic since you drive through super slowly—but expect it to take at least an hour. To make the experience even better, you can download a guide for all the details on the animals and facts. During the tour, you will see gates with signs that say “checkpost” to guide you to where you are and what you will see. Safari team members are available at many of the gates to help you with anything you might need during your adventure. And the animals can be temperamental (especially in crummy weather), so be prepared that you might not always see specific species. Whether you’re planning to go for the day or even just a quick visit, you’ll want to purchase tickets online and reserve a time and date to go. Tickets start at $24.99 for adults and $19.99 for seniors and children under 48″.

Six Flags Wild Safari Drive-Thru is only part of the park

If your family is still up for an adventure, New Jersey’s largest and most popular theme park, Six Flags Great Adventure , is right next door with rides, restaurants, and hours of entertainment. Six Flags Great Adventure’s main park has plenty of thrilling and tame rides for all ages and lots of special events planned for 2023. This Spring Break, visit Six Flags in New Jersey for Scream Break from April 8-15 for a frighteningly good time that includes some of the features from Fright Fest, like haunted houses, a scare zone, ghouls, and nighttime rides. If you’re thinking about going this summer, you’ll want to head over to Six Flag’s water park, Hurricane Harbor, and spend the rest of the day sliding and splashing on the lazy river and in the pools—a perfect ending to a day “on safari.” New this year, there will be lots of tamer options for younger kids, including a treehouse splash park and 7 new colorful slides that spin and whirl smaller riders. And good to know if you want to add this to your day— Six Flags Great Adventure and Hurricane Harbor require separate ticket purchases from the Wild Safari Drive-Thru Adventure.

Six Flags America will open Saturday, marking the Prince George’s County, Maryland, park’s 25th anniversary.

It opens for the 2024 season with two new rides.

In May, RipQurl Blaster will come online at its Hurricane Harbor, the tallest water coaster in the Mid-Atlantic. The white knuckle raft ride includes three uphill rip currents, three drops, three reverse hairpin turns; a total of 550 feet of twists and turns.

what time does six flags safari open today

Later this summer, SteamWhirler opens as a brand new attraction, plus three other attractions that have been either restored, re-themed or enhanced.

Six Flags America has a total of nine roller coasters, a variety of waterslides, a lazy river, three kids areas and an 800,000-gallon wave pool.

The park is currently looking to fill about 400 additional jobs before the start of summer, including lifeguards, ride operators and food and beverage service. The park is open weekends only, with a couple of exceptions, until June 1, when it begins operating everyday.

The park was originally founded as a wildlife center owned by Ross Perot in 1973, with a drive-through safari until it closed in 1978. It was reopened by Jim Fowler’s Wild Kingdom and eventually transitioned into a theme park. It was rebranded as a Six Flags park in 1999.

Six Flags Entertainment merged with amusement park operator Cedar Fair , whose parks include Kings Dominion in Virginia, last year. The combined companies operate 27 amusement parks, 15 water parks and nine resort properties. The parks attracted 26.7 million visitors last year, and generated $1.8 billion in revenue.

Six Flags NJ opening safari resort, glamping-style with exotic fauna & scenic views

Waking up in a luxurious tent surrounded by wild safari animals is typically an experience reserved for visitors to Sub-Saharan Africa, but now that exotic experience is coming to New Jersey.

A brand new safari resort is coming to Jackson Township, offering guests luxurious bedrooms with scenic views of free-roaming giraffes, oryxes, wildebeests and many other African species.

The Savannah Sunset Resort & Spa is scheduled to open in 2024 as an addition to the Six Flags Great Adventure theme park complex, which already had a 350-acre safari available for visitors.

Also arriving next year will be an extreme, 60-mph coaster that the company claims to be the first super boomerang coaster in North America.

The new additions to the themed park complex — the second largest in the world — represent the largest investment the park has made in 20 years, Great Adventure president Brian Bacica said in a press release.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Six Flags Great Adventure (@sfgradventure)

With the new resort, visitors can experience the 1,200-animal safari through an off-road guided tour and also wake up in a luxurious "glamping" experience inside it.

The resort will include a spa and a fine-dining restaurant surrounded by wild exotic fauna. The guest rooms will look like tents resembling “authentic African lodges,” said Staci Wheeler, Six Flags Great Adventure spokesperson. The resort will be the first of its kind within the Six Flags brand, Wheeler said.

“The campsite will be located in the middle of our Wild Safari," Wheeler said. "We will have a number of animals that freely roam around the enclosed campsite."

The safari animals will stay on site year-round with climate-controlled indoor housing available for all tropical animals. A full-time animal care team will look over their well-being, said Wheeler.

A full list of amenities and details, such as pricing and opening date, are yet to be released by the company. As of today, the company confirmed that there will be various discount packages available.

New Jersey's Six Flags will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2024.

A new overnight “glamping” safari experience is coming to Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, the theme park announced as part of its 50th anniversary celebration.

Savannah Sunset Resort & Spa will have visitors “waking up in an ultra-luxurious tent, watching the sunrise over scenic fields as giraffes freely roam just feet away while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee,” the company said on its website.

The resort will be set within the 350-acre Wild Safari Park and is slated to open next year, officials said. Further details, including the price of a stay, have not been released.

Great Adventure has long had a safari park that visitors can tour to see giraffes and other animals.

At the new resort, visitors can experience the animal safari through an off-road guided tour and wake up in the “glamping” accommodations, which will include a spa and fine-dining restaurant.

The overnight luxury camping experience is one of several new project openings at the Ocean County-based theme park.

Great Adventure is also unveiling its 15th roller coaster, called THE FLASH: Vertical Velocity . It is the first “super boomerang” coaster to open in North America, according to the company.

The roller coaster will open in 2024 as the theme park celebrates its 50th anniversary.

The new attractions are part of a larger investment Six Flags has made at its theme parks nationwide this year, the company said.

More than 13 attractions will soon launch across the nation — one of the “most substantial planned investments” at the parks in more than a decade, the company said.

Drive-thru safari is closing after 2023 at NJ Six Flags

JACKSON — When the safari opens next season at Six Flags Great Adventure, you'll no longer have the option to drive through yourself.

The theme park has announced that, as a part of an overhaul for its 50th anniversary, the Wild Safari will only be accessible through guided tours come 2024.

The attraction will reopen next year as solely a "Safari Off-Road Adventure." Visitors can view animals from trucks that will be running continuously throughout the day.

" Bringing back the Safari Off-Road Adventure allows us to offer guests a personalized experience with their own tour guide and driver bringing them through our 350-acre safari," a park spokesperson said.

According to the park, the repurposed military-grade vehicles can seat around 30 people each.

Safari pricing for 2024 has not been released yet. Guests who already have a park ticket would be able to take a tour from the park (at Frontier Adventures) at no additional cost, but visitors who want to board a truck from outside the theme park would have to pay a fee.

The drive-through option should still be available for a couple more months in 2023, before the safari closes for the season, according to the Great Adventure website.

4 accused in Russia concert hall attack appear in court, apparently badly beaten

Updated on: March 25, 2024 / 7:57 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Moscow — Four men accused of staging the Russia concert hall attack that killed more than 130 people appeared before a Moscow court Sunday showing signs of severe beatings as they faced formal terrorism charges. One appeared to be barely conscious during the hearing.

A court statement said two of the suspects accepted their guilt in the assault after being charged in the preliminary hearing, though the men's condition raised questions about whether they were speaking freely. There had been earlier conflicting reports in Russian media outlets that said three or all four men admitted culpability.

Moscow's Basmanny District Court formally charged Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev, 32; Saidakrami Rachabalizoda, 30; Shamsidin Fariduni, 25; and Mukhammadsobir Faizov, 19, with committing a group terrorist attack resulting in the death of others. The offense carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

The court ordered that the men, all of whom are citizens of Tajikistan, be held in pre-trial custody until May 22.

Along with grinding poverty, Tajikistan is rife with religious tensions. Hard-line Islamists were one of the main forces opposing the government in a 1990s civil war that devastated the country. The militants claiming responsibility for the Moscow massacre that killed 139 people — a branch of the Islamic State group in neighboring Afghanistan — reportedly recruit heavily from Tajikistan.

Russian media had reported that the men were tortured during interrogation by the security services, and Mirzoyev, Rachabalizoda and Fariduni showed signs of heavy bruising, including swollen faces.

Rachabalizoda also had a heavily bandaged ear. Russian media said Saturday that one of the suspects had his ear cut off during interrogation. The Associated Press couldn't verify the report or the videos purporting to show this.

The fourth suspect, Faizov, was brought to court from a hospital in a wheelchair and sat with his eyes closed throughout the proceedings. He was attended by medics while in court, where he wore a hospital gown and trousers and was seen with multiple cuts.

Court officials said Mirzoyev and Rachabalizoda admitted guilt for the attack after being charged.

TOPSHOT-RUSSIA-ATTACK-SHOOTING-JUSTICE

The hearing came as Russia observed a national day of mourning of the attack Friday on the suburban Crocus City Hall concert venue that killed at least 137 people.

Rescuers continued to search the damaged building and the death toll rose as more bodies were found as family and friends of some of those still missing waited for news. Moscow's Department of Health said Sunday it had begun identifying the bodies of those killed via DNA testing, adding the process would take at least two weeks.

The attack, which has been claimed by an ISIS affiliate, is the deadliest on Russian soil in years.

Finger pointing in full force

Russian authorities arrested the four suspected attackers Saturday, with seven more detained on suspicion of involvement in the attack, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an address to the nation Saturday night.

Putin appears to be trying to tie Ukraine to the attack, something its government firmly denies.

He called the attack "a bloody, barbaric terrorist act" and said Russian authorities captured the four as they were trying to escape to Ukraine through a "window" prepared for them on the Ukrainian side of the border.

A United States intelligence official told CBS News the U.S. has intelligence confirming that ISIS was responsible and U.S. intelligence has no reason to doubt those claims.

The U.S. Embassy in Russia had also previously advised Americans  to stay away from concert venues  because of the potential of a terrorist attack. The U.S. intelligence official confirmed to CBS News that the U.S. provided intelligence to Russia regarding the potential for an attack, under the intelligence community's Duty to Warn requirement.

"ISIS bears sole responsibility for this attack. There was no Ukrainian involvement whatsoever ," National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said in a statement.

Russian media broadcast videos that apparently showed the detention and interrogation of the suspects, including one who told the cameras he was approached by an unidentified assistant of an Islamic preacher and paid to take part in the raid.

Putin didn't mention ISIS in his speech, and Kyiv accused him and other Russian politicians of falsely linking Ukraine to the assault to stoke fervor for Russia's war in Ukraine , which recently entered its third year.

The raid was a major embarrassment for Putin and happened just days after he cemented his grip on the country for another six years in a vote that followed the harshest crackdown on dissent since the Soviet times.

Some commentators on Russian social media questioned how authorities, who have relentlessly suppressed any opposition activities and muzzled independent media, failed to prevent the attack despite the U.S. warnings.

ISIS, which fought against Russia during its intervention in the Syrian civil war , has long targeted Russia. In a statement posted by the group's Aamaq news agency, the ISIS Afghanistan affiliate said it had attacked a large gathering of "Christians" in Krasnogorsk.

The group issued a new statement Saturday on Aamaq, saying the attack was carried out by four men who used automatic rifles, a pistol, knives and firebombs. It said the assailants fired at the crowd and used knives to kill some concertgoers, casting the raid as part of ISIS' ongoing war with countries it says are fighting against Islam.

In October 2015, a bomb planted by ISIS downed a Russian passenger plane over Sinai, killing all 224 people on board, most of them Russian vacationers returning from Egypt.

The group, which operates mainly in Syria and Iraq but also in Afghanistan and Africa, also has claimed responsibility for several attacks in Russia's volatile Caucasus and other regions in past years. It recruited fighters from Russia and other parts of the former Soviet Union.

As Russia mourns, frantic families of the missing seek answers

Events at cultural institutions were canceled Sunday, flags were lowered to half staff and television entertainment and advertising were suspended, according to state news agency RIA Novosti. A steady stream of people added to a makeshift memorial near the burned-out concert hall, creating a huge mound of flowers.

"People came to a concert, some people came to relax with their families, and any one of us could have been in that situation. And I want to express my condolences to all the families that were affected here and I want to pay tribute to these people," Andrey Kondakov, one of the mourners who came to lay flowers at the memorial, told the AP.

Tribute To The Victims Of Moscow Terror Attack

"It is a tragedy that has affected our entire country," kindergarten employee Marina Korshunova said. "It just doesn't even make sense that small children were affected by this event." Three children were among the dead.

Igor Pogadaev was desperately seeking any details about his wife, Yana Pogadaeva, who went to the concert. The last he heard from her was when she sent him two photos from the Crocus City Hall music venue.

After Pogadaev saw the reports of gunmen opening fire on concertgoers, he rushed to the site, but couldn't find her in the numerous ambulances or among the hundreds of people who had made their way out of the venue.

"I went around, searched, I asked everyone, I showed photographs. No one saw anything, no one could say anything," Pogadaev told the AP in a video message.

He watched flames bursting out of the building as he made frantic calls to a hotline for relatives of the victims, but received no information.

As the death toll mounted Saturday, Pogodaev scoured hospitals in the Russian capital and the Moscow region, looking for information on newly admitted patients.

His wife wasn't among the 182 reported injured, nor on the list of 60 victims authorities had already identified, he said.

The Moscow Region's Emergency Situations Ministry posted a video Sunday showing equipment dismantling the damaged music venue to give rescuers access.
