Everything you need to know about travelling to Salalah during khareef season

While summer temperatures in the Middle East average about 43°C, in the south of Oman, late June to September marks khareef season, when monsoon rain sweeps over the region.

The seasonal weather unfolds in Oman's southernmost Dhofar Governorate.

It's one of the best times to visit Salalah, a city known for its pristine beaches and, at this time of year, its lush green valleys and verdant mountains.

If you’re planning to go, here’s everything you need to know about visiting Salalah during khareef season, from where to stay and what to see, to tips on getting the most out of your journey.

Getting to Salalah from the UAE

A short flight of less than two hours from airports in the UAE will transport you to Salalah International Airport. Several airlines offer regular flights between Salalah and the UAE, including Emirates, flydubai, Wizz Air and Air Arabia.

For a more intrepid experience, embark on a mega road trip . It's about a 12-hour drive from the UAE to Salalah and the journey of about 1,200km takes travellers through some of the sultanate’s other towns and cities, including the cultural city of Nizwa and the inland town of Haima.

There are two points in the UAE from which to cross the border into Oman – at either Hatta in Dubai or Khatm Al Shikla in Al Ain. No matter which one you choose, you’ll need to your passport and appropriate car insurance with coverage that extends to Oman. There's an exit fee of Dh35 to pay to leave the UAE, plus you'll need a visa to enter Oman. UAE residents can get this on arrival at the border.

After crossing the border it’s a relatively easy – albeit long – drive with ample petrol stations and rest houses dotted along the way. Alternating drivers is highly recommended, as is taking regular breaks to avoid fatigue.

Seeing the cloud cover and drizzle as you finally approach Salalah is likely to be up there as one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever have.

A pit-stop in Nizwa

Break up the long road trip with a pit-stop in Nizwa, Oman's cultural capital. Spend the night or take a few hours to explore some of the sultanate's traditional buildings, including Nizwa Fort, the bustling souq and the grand Sultan Qaboos Mosque.

Oman Across Ages is a new national museum that's also worth visiting. It's in Manah, an easy 20-minute drive from Nizwa.

When to visit

Late June to September marks khareef season in Oman. Temperatures dip, thick fog covers the mountains and rainfall is frequent. Peak season is from mid-July until the end of August, when the landscape is at its greenest and visitors from across the sultanate and from neighbouring countries flock to the southern coastline to enjoy the cooler climes.

Where to stay

For those seeking an indulgent retreat, Salalah has a range of luxury accommodation. Some noteworthy options include Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara , which has uninterrupted coastal views, and the secluded Alila Hinu Bay in Mirbat . Crowne Plaza Resort Salalah is another nice coastal option, with three swimming pools.

Be aware that during khareef season, room rates rise and travellers can expect to pay higher than average prices.

More wallet-friendly accommodation is available at Millennium Resort Salalah and Hilton Salalah Resort, both in the city centre, and at the Salalah Rotana Resort in Taqah, about a 20-minute drive outside it.

A unique option for travellers who want to connect with nature is Souly Lodge. This rustic hideaway offers palm-surrounded beachside bungalows on wooden stilts, with private terraces and room rates from about Dh600.

Travellers on a tight budget can also find a variety of comfortable places to stay. Try IntercityHotel Salalah, Hamdan Plaza Hotel, Atana Stay Salalah, Fanar Hotel & Residences and The Plaza Hotel & Resort. These offer affordable rooms with modern amenities and a convenient location, but without the perks of resort life. Room rates start at about Dh300 during khareef season.

What to see and do during khareef season

Wadi Darbat

Situated about a 50-minute drive from Salalah city is the breathtaking Wadi Darbat – an idyllic valley enveloped by mountains and one of the most popular destinations to visit during khareef. Marvel at the cascading waterfalls, verdant greenery and serene lakes that create a tranquil atmosphere.

Al Mughsail Beach

A 40-minute drive from the city centre, Al Mughsail Beach is known for its cliff-side peaks, white sandy shores and dramatic blowholes, best witnessed during khareef. Enjoy watching powerful waves crash against the cliffs alongside the natural beauty of this picturesque spot.

The waterfalls of Ayn Athum only appear during khareef season. The water cascades from a jagged clifftop in many streams, collecting in a pool below and making it a unique sight in the sultanate.

Ayn Sahalnoot

Tucked away amid the splendour of Dhofar's rugged landscapes, Ayn Sahalnoot offers an unparalleled experience of nature's tranquillity with its natural springs, picturesque rock formations and serene ambience. The Sahalnoot valley is only a 20-minute drive from Salalah city and offers some great picnic spots, although it can get busy during khareef.

Taqah Castle

Recently renovated and opened just in time for khareef season, Taqah Castle stands as a testament to Salalah's rich cultural heritage. In the old neighbourhood of Taqah, the castle offers fascinating architecture and traditional artefacts, alongside exhibitions that provide insights into the region's compelling history.

A 10-minute drive from Salalah, Ayn Garziz is a natural spring waterfall surrounded by intricate rock formations, offering a refreshing spot for visitors to cool off and enjoy being in nature. Within a short walk of the waterfall are some natural caves that are also worth exploring.

Top tips for travelling to Salalah during khareef

• Explore with an SUV: While it's not compulsory, some of Salalah's scenic spots are best explored via an SUV, especially during khareef season.
• Pack mosquito repellent: Salalah's lush greenery doesn't only attract tourists, it also brings in mosquitoes and other insects, so don't forget to pack repellent.
• Dress correctly: Light, long-sleeved tops and trousers will protect you from insect bites while wandering among bushes and tall grass, while sturdy trainers are the best choice of footwear.
• Try local delicacies: Don't miss the opportunity to savour local cuisine on your trip. Omani must-try’s include traditional dishes such as shuwa, harees, and majboos.

Bloom Hawana Salalah Festival to Be Launched on July 27, 2023

The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism along with Taiseer Platform, government institutions and private sector establishments will organise the first edition of ‘Bloom Hawana Salalah Festival’ (Flowers and Life Festival).

The event will be organised as part of activities of Khareef Dhofar season 2023. The festival will take place from July 27 to August 11, 2023 at Hawana Salalah, Dhofar Governorate.

The opening ceremony of the festival will be held under the patronage of HE Sheikh Faisal Abdullah Al Rowas, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI).

The Festival is expected to attract around 10,000 visitors a day. It aims to provide an immersive and unforgettable experience that combines creativity and entertainment in a delightful environment, in addition to spreading awareness about environment preservation and sustainability, which will be reflected in the festival through various events and activities.

By partnering with different government parties and private sector companies, Taiseer Platform aims to contribute to the promotion of Khareef Dhofar (monsoon season 2023), and thus enhance the position of the Sultanate of Oman as a distinguished destination for tourists and visitors from all over the world. The Festival includes a mini-exhibition of plants that grow in the land of the Dhofar Governorate.

Talented Omani youth will add a distinctive touch and enrich the festival across the event sites through painting, playing music, street theater, and other arts, along with many other youth talents and creations. The festival also includes an entertaining Bloom challenges corner for families, youth and children, which will be available free of charge for entertainment, enthusiasm, and excitement lovers. It includes fun and exciting games, in addition to a mini corner for birds and pets that harmonise with visitors and the festival’s agenda.

In addition to a number of educational workshops, a diverse list of recreational activities will be held, which will be divided into several areas, including the flowers and plants area, the artistic and talent shows area, the garden of rare plants, birds and animals, the tropical food area, and many other activities.

The “Bloom Hawana Salalah” festival will be held in Marina Hawana Salalah, and it is expected to enrich visitors with many unique and new activities. As it is full of sites for capturing memories, the gardening and flowering area, in addition to the tropical fruits and planting area, the relaxation area, and the Bloom Container, through which visitors enjoy viewing natural life through a photo gallery with the support of a number of government institutions.

Marwan Abdul Hakim Al Ghassani, Director of Tourism Promotion Department at the Directorate General of Tourism in the Governorate of Dhofar said that this festival is organised in line with the approach of the authorities concerned in distributing tourist traffic to tourist destinations and sites in the Dhofar Governorate during the Khareef season.

He added that the festival is in harmony with the efforts made in the entertainment industry and the implementation of specialised programmes by creating innovative activities with a positive and sustainable impact that contribute to activating and creating new tourism patterns.

Salalah Tourism Festival takes place from 15 July to 31 August every year. The festival is part of Khareef (monsoon) that extends from the end of July until the beginning of September.

Most of the activities of the Salalah Tourism Festival are held at the Municipal Recreational Center, as well as outdoor events such as the Balloons Carnival in Sahalnout Plain and “Samahrem Tourist Village”, along with the Atina Land Park, the Friends of the Municipality camp) in Atin Plain, in addition to the family activities at Taqa and Mirbat.

The festival contributes to the promotion of tourism in Khareef Salalah, which attracts family tourism from all governorates of the Sultanate and the GCC countries.

What is salalah’s khareef season.

Khareef, which means ‘autumn’ in Arabic , is a period of seasonal weather in the southern Dhofar governorate of Oman. Another amazing place to enjoy the natural beauty of Salalah during khareef season is the beach at Al Mughsail. As one of the most spectacular beaches in Salalah, it has a dramatic coastline with crashing waves.

It has also unique blowholes that are scattered across the beach, where sea water rushes strongly forming natural fountains. One of the most famous dishes in Salalah is camel meshkak , which is kebab made from camel meat. With special Omani seasoning, traditional Omani rice and Omani bread, this is an unmissable mouthwatering dish. There are lots of stalls and restaurants that serve this dish – however, the Sahl Ittin, or Ittin Plain, is the best-known place where there are lots of stalls that serve the dish, along with grilled chicken and beef, rice, bread and salads. Oman’s Khareef Festival: A Monsoon Retreat in the Middle East

Tourists flock to southern Oman for a refreshing escape during the harsh Arabian summers

As extreme heat pummels the Arabian Peninsula, tourists from across the region have been flocking to the southern Omani city of Salalah for the annual Khareef festival, which celebrates Salalah’s unique climate. While temperatures elsewhere in the region have averaged 104° Fahrenheit (40° Celsius), visitors to Salalah have been able to enjoy a balmy average of just 77° F (25° C).

Khareef, which means “autumn” in Arabic, refers to monsoon season in Oman, which occurs between late June and early September, the height of summer for most other areas. Compared to the potentially devastating monsoon seasons in East Asia, the Khareef season is mild, with pleasantly cool and breezy weather with fog and light rain, leading to an outburst of lush greenery.

Anwar al-Habsi, sales manager of the Salalah Garden Hotel and a native of the Omani capital Muscat, about 500 miles northwest of Salalah, told The Media Line that Salalah hotels burst with visitors during Khareef. Omanis from further north, including from Muscat, tend to head south to “escape the heat in summer,” he said.

Last year, nearly 813,000 tourists visited Salalah during the Khareef season, 6% more than 2021’s 767,000 visitors.

We have two major seasons where tourists come. We colloquially refer to them as the Arab season and the foreigner season.

Ahmed Al-Mahri, a local guide for Salalah Glory Tours, told The Media Line that Arab and non-Arab tourists tend to visit Salalah at different times of the year.

“We have two major seasons where tourists come. We colloquially refer to them as the Arab season and the foreigner season,” he said. During the Khareef season, most visitors are Arabs or expatriates living in Gulf countries. Tourists from other parts of the world tend to come in December, he said.

According to Oman’s National Center for Statistical Information, 2.9 million tourists visited Oman last year. The majority, 1.9 million, were from the United Arab Emirates, with India, Yemen, and Germany next on the list.

Salalah is located in the Dhofar Governorate in southern Oman, bordering the Arabian Sea. The region can seem more tropical than Middle Eastern, with coconut trees rather than date palms adorning the landscape. However, herds of camels crossing the roads do remind visitors that they are in the Middle East.

In just a small stretch of the Dhofar region, visitors can find mountains, deserts, freshwater lakes and rivers, and coastal beaches. Tourists may also welcome Oman’s low crime rate. However, they will not find alcohol sold freely. Oman has strict laws around alcohol use, and alcohol can be purchased in Salalah only in five-star resorts.

Regional delicacies include camel meat and the sticky confection halwa (also known as halva).

The lush valley of Wadi Darbat is one of Salalah’s most popular tourist attractions. The site features a lake, large ponds, and waterfalls, with vendors offering boat trips and selling wares at seasonal stalls.

The region is also known for its 200 or so baobabs, bizarre-looking trees native to East Africa and Madagascar. Other unique features include a hidden beach, marine geysers, and a gravity hill, a road where the landscape creates an optical illusion that makes cars placed in neutral appear to travel uphill magically.

In addition to its natural scenery, Salalah also features numerous religious sites. Many tombs in Salalah are believed to belong to biblical and Quranic figures, including Job, Imran, and Hud. The tomb of Imran, the father of Mary according to Muslim tradition, is said to be the longest tomb in the world, at about 40 feet. The supposed tomb of Cheraman Perumal, believed to be the first Indian king to convert to Islam, is also a tourist attraction for Indians from the state of Kerala, where he ruled.

Mohammed Irfan, an Indian native who now lives in the UAE, told The Media Line he visited the grave in 2022.

“It is a very important part of history for us Keralites,” he said. “More than that, it helps to better understand historic trade links and how South Asians have been in contact with Arabs for a long time.”

Some Mormon scholars believe that Salalah is the site named in the Book of Mormon as the city Bountiful, where the Prophet Lehi settled before sailing to the Americas with his band of Israelites.

The Land of Frankincense site in Salalah features the remnants of a frankincense trading port active from the eighth to the 16 th centuries and is designated a UNESCO world heritage site. Local rumor has it that the frankincense brought to the infant Jesus by the three wise men came from Salalah.

Muslim visitors are also interested in the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in the city center. Completed in 2001, it is Salalah’s largest mosque.

The region features nonreligious historical sites as well, such as the ruins of Sumhuram, a fortified port city that existed from about the fourth century BCE to the fourth century CE. The remains of the legendary lost city of Ubar, also known as the Atlantis of the Sands, are located about 110 miles north of Salalah.

With a population of about 450,000, Salalah is Oman’s second most populous city after Muscat. Unlike many other Gulf cities, neither city has massive skyscrapers or futuristic architecture. Western attire is also less common, and tourists are expected to dress modestly. Most Omanis are either Sunni Muslims or Ibadi Muslims, but members of each branch coexist and pray in each other’s mosques.

As well as Arabic, Salalah locals speak the Semitic languages of Mehri and Shehri. The region is also home to Baloch, Zanzibari, and Swahili people who came to Oman from its former colonial outposts.

Oman has been ruled by Arabs since 1749, when Ahmad bin Said al-Busaidi took control of the country from the Persians. The Al-Busaid dynasty has ruled over the country ever since. Oman was a de facto British protectorate for almost a century from the late 19 th century. In 1932, Salalah was made Oman’s capital, but in 1970 the capital was moved to Muscat.

Salalah gears up to welcome tourists during the annual Kharif season

Salalah is often touted as a mini-Kerala by expatriates for its incredible natural beauty and fabulous weather conditions. As Indians could avail of a visa on arrival, all you need to do is to reach the Oman border.

The beaches in Mirbat The serene beaches of Mirbat are truly wonderlands of natural beauty. Here, you could enjoy thrilling rides on traditional dhow boats. Wadi Sahalnoot This region dons a lush green carpet of incredible flora during the Kharif or the spring season. However, travellers should be careful while riding on narrow roads with steep curves.

Wadi Darbat The huts in Dhofar Wadi Darbat remind you of the quaint cottages in the picturesque locations at Munnar and Vythiri. These have been built perfectly in sync with the beautiful nature. You could enjoy the enchanting views of the misty morning from these cottages that are completely built using timber. Visitors can book the cottages in advance.

Gravity Hill This mysterious place is located around 27 kilometres from Takha on the way to Mirbat. The place is known for zero gravity. The vehicles could climb the mountain paths even in neutral gear at this spot. It is quite mind-boggling that the laws of gravity do not affect this particular spot.

The blow holes The blow holes on the land near Mughsail Beach, just 45 minutes away from Salalah is another interesting natural phenomenon. The seawater sprays up from the holes that are formed in the sand. It is quite a sight when the water is blown up to a height of thirty metres.

When the sea is extremely rough, the water is driven into the rock cave under the shore and then escapes upward through these blow holes. Meanwhile, the rocks that are covered in greenery and the beautiful sea are unmissable too.

Mughsail Beach The white sand shore and the contrasting blue ocean make Mughsai Beach one of the most visited destinations in Salalah. This beach is around fifty-seven kilometres away from Salalah. The trip would be enjoyable if you could ride an off-roading vehicle to this destination. Meanwhile, the roads have tall mountain ranges and hills on both sides.

This is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing family vacation or barbecue parties. Besides, you could rest at the small huts on the roadside. If it isn’t raining, do not forget to enjoy a stroll on the beach. Moreover, if you are lucky, you could spot rare species of birds in this region.

Itheen Itheen Park is known for its beautiful greenery and can remind one of Idukki and Wayanad districts of Kerala. This place is just ten minutes away from the Salalah airport.

Taqah Beach The white shores of Taqah Beach are also home to various species of birds. A play area has been arranged here for the kids. You could reach Taqah in under 30 minutes from Salalah.

Wadi Darbat Boating through the Wadi or valley is the main attraction here. The visitors could hire mechanical boats or pedal boats. This place is perfect to arrange elaborate barbecue parties. Wadi Darbat is just an hour away from Salalah.

Khareef is a colloquial term for monsoon. Late June to September marks khareef season in Oman. Temperatures dip, thick fog covers the mountains and rainfall is frequent.

Day 1 Itinerary

Places visited: mezyad border post - ميدان الاحتفلات - raysut - coconut beach.

We planned to do a 3000km odd l, cross-country Middle East road trip in Nissan Xterra. We preferred a night travel and crossed UAE border around 2 am. Highway in Oman is narrow compared to Emirates and you need a SUV(4x4) to visit Salalah.

Journey is 1200 km one way with 1000+ kms in Oman. It’s a highway on arid desert with gas stations every 200 km. There are truck lay byes every 10-15 km but gas stations are the resorts if you want to refresh. Just few kms before Salalah you’ll find a entry toll gate. Thats gate of heaven where you’ll start feeling the misty air.

The monsoon season (also known as Khareef) typically starts around June and lasts until August. During monsoon, Salalah is transformed into a beautiful oasis due to the light drizzles that cool the air. The Salalah Tourism Festival takes place during the monsoon season from July 15- August 31, every year. Salalah is must visit during Khareef.

Other than wadi(springs) and mountains, Salalah is a known for its tombs and forts.

Ours is a two day trip to Salalah with day one covering the beaches and souq ( market) near the town.

Day 2 Itinerary

Salalah Tourism Festival – The best time to visit Oman

For a splendid time in Oman, the recommended time period to visit would be from July to August when the weather is cool allowing visitors to have a pleasant experience. It is also during these 2 months that the Salalah Tourism Festival takes place each year. Visitors can look forward to a fantastic experience in the outdoors during these 2 months.

The festival usually takes place from the 15th of July to the 31st of August. Salalah Eat' food festival begins

'Salalah Eat' food festival, which comes from the cooperation between Oman Tourism Development Company (OMRAN Group), Dhofar Municipality, Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, and several private organizations, kicked off on Thursday evening.

The festival is designed to enrich the visitors’ experiences with multiple events and entertainment performances targeting various segments of society to promote local tourism in the Dhofar governorate.

The inaugural ceremony of the festival was held in Hawana Salalah Resort under the auspices of His Excellency Dr Ahmed bin Mohsen Al Ghassani, Chairman of Dhofar Municipality, and witnessed the presence of Eng Mohammed bin Abu-Bakar Salim Al Sail Al Ghassani, Deputy Chairman of OMRAN Group and the CEO, Hashil Bin Obaid Al Mahrouqi, along with many officials from the Dhofar Municipality, Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, and OMRAN Group.

The event will run from August 4 th to 13 th at Hawana Salalah Resort. Guests are welcome to attend on weeknights from 6 pm to 12 midnight and on weekends from 6 pm to 2 am, where they will be able to experience Omani and international cuisines from more than 70 food and beverages providers including over 55 SMEs.

Additionally, during the 10 days, around 10 entertainment shows will be orchestrated to ensure visitors enjoy every moment they spend at the food festival. These include acts from the ‘Best Arab Talent’ title winners on ‘Arabs Got Talent’, Khawater Al Zalam, known for their mastery in ‘Light and Visual Art’ technique, Bollywood performances and spectacular light shows.

Dr Ahmed bin Mohsen Al Ghassani, Chairman of Dhofar Municipality stated, "The Khareef season is a remarkable time that attracts plenty of visitors to Dhofar governorate to enjoy the distinctive atmosphere and spend unforgettable moments amid pristine nature, which ultimately contributes to supporting the tourism and related sectors in the region." He further added, "Festivals are well received for their contribution to providing a comprehensive tourism experience with a variety of activities and programmes. I take this opportunity to commend all efforts that were invested to launch 'Salalah Eat' festival as one of the main entertainment activities during Khareef season."

Speaking about the significance of broadening the Sultanate's tourism offerings, Hashil bin Obaid Al Mahrouqi, CEO of OMRAN Group, said, "The Group continues to work with our key partners to strengthen the potential of Oman’s tourism sector, further contributing to creating innovative and unique tourism experiences. “Salalah Eat” represents the Group's efforts to diversify tourism products in the governorate. It also reflects the Group’s endeavors to find effective initiatives aligned with the latest practices of In-Country Value (ICV), social investment and the promotion of Omani products in the local market. As such, the aim is to provide a stimulating environment for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and local talents”.

Marwan bin Abdul Hakim al Ghassani, Director of Tourism Promotion Department at the Directorate General of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar Governorate, said, "Organising 'Salalah Eat' festival reflects the Ministry's efforts to create events that help enhance the performance of the tourism sector as well as supporting SME sector and create business opportunities. Through these festivals, participants look forward to providing delicacies from both Omani and international cuisines that attract more visitors”.

Defining the food festival, Sarah bint Najeeb Al Balushi, Founder and CEO of Celebrate Oman, said, "Salalah Eat festival offers an opportunity for visitors to spend quality time and taste local and international dishes whilst enjoying the planned entertainment activities for 10 days. With the participation of a range of competent nationals and SMEs, the festival is expected to attract a significant crowd”.

'Salalah Eat' festival is the first event of “OMRAN Carnivals”, which the Group plans to hold in many tourist destinations in Oman. This reflects the Group's role in promoting the local tourism scene and maximizing ICV to achieve multiple social and economic returns.
