Cruise Theatres & Cinema

A big screen at sea? Yes please! More and more, cinema screens are joining theatre performances and Broadway-style shows as prime entertainment options onboard your fave fleets. Whether it’s old classics or brand-new blockbusters, cruise lines have been really rolling out the red carpet for their guests’ silver screen experiences – and in a big way too.

As for theatre options, an all-singing, all-dancing array of stage shows are just waiting in the wings to delight crowds across the seas. And with more variety that you can shake a mic stand at, there’s something to suit everyone’s tastes.

So, what can you expect from watching a film or show on the ocean waves? It all depends on the cruise line of course. Not every cruise cinema or theatre is created equal, so let’s take a look at our pick of the best – they could be coming to a holiday near you very soon!

The best cruise ship cinemas

Princess Cruises’ Movies Under the Stars

Debuting in 2004, Princess ’ Movies Under the Stars is now a marquee feature of many of its ships, and it’s easy to see why. An open-air, poolside experience like no other, the top deck becomes an all-day, all-night amphitheatre showing the best in feature films, concerts and even live sports.

At 300 square feet, you’ll have no problem getting a great view. And with a 69,000-watt sound system, the sound comes in loud and clear even when it’s full steam ahead. The line adds comfy cloth liners to its loungers, while the fleece blankets make it great to cuddle up to your loved ones if there’s a chill in the air.

And the best bit: free popcorn in the evening for you to chomp on – because no cinema-going experience is complete without it. Perfect for a spot of lights, camera, relax-tion.

Disney Cruise Line’s Buena Vista Theatre

An amazing cinema offering from Disney ? We’d never have guessed. Nevertheless, the iconic cruise line has some real treats in store for guests young and old. Little ones will love the selection of films on show, including classics and first-run films from the beloved Disney library, while adults are sure to be wowed by the Art Deco-style décor straight out of the ‘20s and ‘30s.

The first line to show 3D movies onboard its fleet of ships, the extra dimension adds another level of immersion, bringing Disney’s legendary creations to life like never before. Stepped up with hi-tech sound technology, your favourites are going to look and sound better than ever. Even if you’ve seen them hundreds of times before, this is the best way to experience them all over again!

Carnival Cruises’ IMAX Theatre and Dive-In Movies

Speaking of immersive, we couldn’t not include what’s onboard Carnival . The first – and still the only – cruise line to offer a full IMAX experience, this could well be the way to watch films at sea.

The screens are bigger, the definitions higher and the sound is seat-shaking, in the best possible way of course. Plus, with the best first-run films, recent hits and documentaries around, you’ll have your pick of the bunch during your time at sea.

That’s not all, you’ll also get to pull up a poolside chair at Dive-In Movies. It’s not just a clever name either. Get your trunks, costume or bikini on, hop into the pool and watch your favourites while you’re in the water. It might seem like an odd mix, but hey, when in Rome…

Royal Caribbean’s Onboard-way classics

When you’re the only cruise line putting on Tony Award-winning shows at sea, you know your theatre credentials are really something. Picture the most iconic names you can think of. Royal Caribbean ’s slate of entertainment is basically a who’s who of what’s in your head right now.

For starters, Grease needs no introduction. But for a trip back to the age of slicked-back hair and summer lovin’, there’s really nothing like it. It’s all paws on deck for CATS , the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic that’s sure to get guests of all ages feline fine. Or how about the record-breaking, toe-tapping tale of Hairspray ? Another beloved Broadway icon, Royal Caribbean’s take on the show is bigger than ever – and we’re not just talking about the cast’s wigs!

There’s a whole host of original productions from their own in-house production company to be wowed by too. In The Air celebrates the thinkers, inventors and artists from history in real style. Ever wanted to see Da Vinci soar across the stage? Now’s your chance! For those who want to take a trip to Sin City (minus the sinning, of course), there’s Jackpot , an unbelievable combination of Vegas’ glitz, glamour and storied performances. Who says what happens in Vegas has to stay there?

Celebrity Cruises’ all-star selection

When it comes to choice, Celebrity Cruises ’ theatre offerings mean there are some big decisions to make. Packed with plenty of options, the line’s entertainment has something for just about everyone. It’s another award winner too, so whatever you go for, you’ll be glad you did.

With a Hot Summer Night’s Dream , Shakespeare’s tale gets a 21 st -century retelling thanks to a fusion of music, incredible acrobatics, and dazzling colours. You won’t have seen the Bard’s story like this before.

For another twist on the classics, there’s Amade , a remixed reimagining of Mozart’s genius. See how his – and other legendary composers – work traces a path towards the Top 10. A story of musical evolution, it’s a journey that’s perfect for scholars and shape throwers alike.

What else? Rock City and Broken Strings turn things up to eleven, while Elysium’s fairytale magic tells the story of the struggle between good and evil as they seek to regain control of a far-off land – perfect for family fun. But for mum and dad, there’s Elyria , a tale of love and excitement on an exotic island that treats all the senses. And – ooh la la – it’s adults only!

Norwegian Cruise Line’s non-stop excitement

Eyes and ears are in for a treat onboard Norwegian Cruise Line . Blending Broadway shows with original productions, there are some big name shows across their ships, and they’re all as mesmerising as the last.

Calling yourself the “best entertainment at sea” might be a bold claim, but when the line-up’s this good, they can definitely back it up. Here you’ll find Footloose and live bands vying for your attention, tribute acts up against the best stand-ups at sea, and a whole load more.

The legendary Kinky Boots is here too. A proper tale of heart and soul, this Broadway icon has won every major Best Musical award you can think of. Not to be outdone, Six retells the tale of Henry VIII’s six wives, girl power-style. Now a pop group, Six ’s fierce and fiery cast turn the fates of the monarchy’s most infamous divorces into an all-singing, all-dancing story that’s had audiences across the world losing their heads. Not one to be missed!

Sensational shows at sea on MSC

Be among the first to see brand-new, awe-inspiring entertainment onboard MSC cruises . You’re in for a real treat with their cruise lines offering spectacular performances twelve times a week. They’ve brought together acrobatics, dance, and music to create a unique multi-sensory entertainment experience bursting with light and sound – what more could you want?

From their Rock Circus merging the best of rock with the best of circus to the emotional and colourful journey of My üt – their seven exclusive theatre shows are truly extraordinary.

Night-time dive-in theater showing on a movie screen on the Carnival Vista

How To Enjoy Dive-in Movies on Carnival Cruise Ships

Pool-side movies first started back in 2004 when Princess cruise line introduced their first big movie screen by their main pool on the Caribbean Princess. The following year, Carnival took up the idea and made their first Seaside Theater on the Carnival Liberty for Dive-in Movies. Since then, every Carnival ship has had this theater, and the screens have just gotten bigger and bigger. The movies run the gamut, from kid-friendly features, to action flicks, to Oscar-nominated films; you have quite the selection.

Best Theaters on Cruise Ships

John Roberts

I think it’s easy to understand why people find movies and big-screen experiences so attractive. It’s fun to settle in for a couple hours of escape, enjoying a visually stunning movie or presentation with family and friends.

Did you know that many cruise vacations feature fun ways to watch the big stars on the big screen while sailing on a big ship?

Last year, thousands of cruisers viewed “Black Panther”, “Avengers: Infinity War”, “Crazy Rich Asians”, “Mary Poppins Returns” and many other productions and programs in cruise ship theaters and on big screens outdoors under open skies.

But not all cruise ship theater experiences are the same. The best cruise ship theaters can make your voyage even more fun. Check out our favorites.

Princess Cruises’ “Movies Under the Stars”

Princess offers one of the best movie-viewing experiences you can have on a cruise with its “Movies Under the Stars” program. There’s nothing like easing into a lounger under dark starry skies as balmy breezes and sweet salty air fills your senses as you catch a movie you have been wanting to see (or re-watch one of your favorites) on the big screen at the ship poolside amphitheater.

The cruise line pulls out all the stops, covering loungers with comfy soft cloth liners, providing fleece blankets and serving up fresh popcorn. It all makes for an entertainment option you can only find on a cruise ship.

Disney Cruise Line’s Buena Vista Theatre

These fancy theater venues on Disney ships are a wonder themselves, with glitzy Art Deco stylings that take you back to the golden age of film. Theaters on Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy can hold up to 400 passengers, and the venues on Disney Wonder and Disney Magic hold up to 278.

Buena Vista Theatre offers all the latest hi-tech motion picture and sound technology, allowing the line to show full-length feature films shot in Disney Digital 3D. Disney Cruise Line shows first-run movies, all-time favorites, and, of course, plenty of Disney classics. You can also get drinks, popcorn and other refreshments at the concession stand.

Cunard’s Royal Court Theatre and Illuminations

Cunard offers classics and first-run movies in a glamorous setting its Royal Court Theatre facilities on Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth cruise ships. These theaters have almost 900 seats available in the large venues that span three decks and have been upgraded with the latest hi-tech sound systems.

Passengers can also reserve private boxes on these two ships for the movie showings. The boxes (fee) feature attentive wait service with desserts, chocolates and Champagne cocktails.

On Queen Mary 2, Illuminations is the ship’s planetarium facility, the first venue of its type on a cruise ship. A dome screen descends around viewers who gaze skyward for an immersive extra-terrestrial experience. The facility seats 150 for planetarium programs.

The dome is retracted for 3D movies or other enrichment programming. Illuminations then accommodates up to 500 passengers for these shows.

Carnival Vista and Carnival Horizon IMAX Theatre

The newest Carnival cruise ships feature the first IMAX cinemas at sea. The facilities seat 187 passengers and show brand-new blockbuster movies, recent hit films and documentaries in the hi-resolution, wide-screen and immersive IMAX format.

Passengers purchase tickets at the kiosks or from staff at the counters, and you’ll find a full concession stand outside the theater where you can buy drinks and treats, like popcorn and candy.

Viking Orion Explorers’ Dome

This innovation offers shows and programming highlighting space exploration and what we can see in the skies and stars above. Viking Orion is the first Viking Ocean cruise ship to offer the facility, which sits atop the ship in the Explorers’ Lounge. The 26-seat venue is the highest-definition 7K planetarium in the world, Viking says.

Passengers can view two 3D films, “Journey to Space” and “Under the Arctic Sky” and sit down for enrichment talks and other films and programming in 2D and 3D.

The ship has a resident astronomer who leads stargazing sessions with the aid of Viking Orion’s portable telescope that can be trained on particularly interesting sky events or constellations that come into view while sailing.

Cinema on Cruise Ships

Cruises have a cinema for the enjoyment of all passengers, usually located in the theater or on the highest deck at the aft of the ship with seats surrounding the screen in an immersive way. You can watch movies of all kinds for free, although they are usually in English on most ships.

These cinemas usually have screens ranging from 144 to 360 inches, which always depend on the ship we are sailing on, but are generally large and with high-quality sound.

On the other hand, the cabins of many cruise lines include a smart TV where we can rent new releases to watch comfortably from the bed and available in different languages.

5 Best Theaters on Cruise Ships

Great entertainment has long been a trademark of cruise travel. Theaters and cinemas on cruise ships host the best acts and films.

Here are the top 5 theaters on cruise ships

1. disney cruise line’s buena vista theater.

Few cruise ships have dedicated theaters, but all four Disney Cruise Line ships have their own Buena Vista Theater where classic and first-run films from the beloved Disney collection are screened. Furthermore, the venue’s acoustics and sights are excellent, due to a Dolby 3D image and Dolby 7.1 surround sound.

2. Queen Mary 2’s Illuminations of Cunard Line

Cunard Line’s flagship Queen Mary 2 has one of the most unusual theaters in the sea. Illuminations is the first cruise ship planetarium with a dome screen that descends from the ceiling for absolutely all-encompassing films. Furthermore, the art deco area serves as a lecture auditorium for the line’s renowned enrichment program.

3. Carnival Vista IMAX Theatre, Carnival Cruise Line

An immersive movie experience is available onboard Carnival Cruise Line’s newest Carnival Vista, which has the first IMAX Theater at sea. This implies that first-run movies and documentaries are shown in a larger format with greater resolutions and louder sound than in traditional cinemas. After all, the speakers in the theater weigh more than 1,000 pounds.

4. Harmony of the Seas Royal Theater, Royal Caribbean International

The Royal Caribbean International’s Harmony of the Seas is the world’s largest cruise ship, and its Royal Theater is as massive. Its magnificent “Grease” presentation is backed by a complete live orchestra in its own studio, and imaginative staging includes a suspended performer with a lighting gantry that can be creatively lowered into the place.

5. Disney Cruise Line Walt Disney Theater

Disney Cruise Line not only has one of the greatest cinemas on its ships, but it also has a live concert venue in the fleet-wide Disney Theme Theater. The elegant venue appears to use every theatrical method imaginable, from puppets to pyrotechnics, and, of course, some recognizable Disney magic to bring Tinker Bell to life. Expert rigging engages the area to improve voice and dance performance. Furthermore, the theater may be used as a large-scale cinema for special screenings.

Disney Cruise Movies at Buena Vista Theater in 2024

By: Author Kristi

If you are going on a Disney Cruise , one of the things included in the price of your vacation at sea is the ability to see as many Disney movies as you would like! There is a real movie theater on board that plays both first-run and previously shown Disney movies! Wondering what Disney Cruise movies you’ll be able to see? Keep reading and you’ll find out!

Disney Cruise Movie Theater

Buena Vista Theater

The Buena Vista Theater is named after the street in Burbank, California where The Walt Disney Company’s studio is located.

The theater features state-of-the-art sound and projection technology, giving guests the ultimate movie-going experience while on board.

With a capacity to seat nearly 300 guests, the theater seating is designed for maximum comfort, with plush chairs and stadium-style arrangement, ensuring that every guest has a great view of the screen.

Watching Movie on a Disney Cruise

Going to the Movies on a Disney Cruise

But what sets the Buena Vista Theater apart from other cruise ship theaters is its selection of films.

While some cruise ships show movies, the Buena Vista Theater exclusively screens Disney films including movies only released in regular theaters.

This means that guests can see a movie that is still in theaters while on board.

While you might find different Disney movies playing depending on how long the cruise lasts, pretty much all of the Disney Cruise Ships will have the same movie lineups.

cinema on cruise ship

Just like a normal movie theater, you will find a refreshment stand that serves popcorn, candy, and canned soda (and beer).

The best deal is to purchase a Popcorn bucket (or bring one from the Disney Parks) because refills are only $1.50 and you can use it all cruise long.

Disney Cruise Popcorn Deal

There are other deals for popcorn & soda, but we usually grab our sodas for free at the drink station before going to the movies.

I also pack snack-sized movie theater candy for the Disney Cruise movies to avoid the expense of buying them onboard.

More About Going to see Disney Cruise Movies

Most of the family movies are run during the day into the early evening.

Later at night, you may find films tailored more toward adults (rated R).

No tickets are needed to see movies at the Buena Vista Theater. You simply show up at the movie time listed in your Personal Navigator, find a seat, and there you have it!

We have never had a problem getting a seat as there are nearly 400 seats in the theater and movies typically run more than once per cruise.

You might want to give yourself a little extra time if you want to purchase concessions because usually only one person is working the counter.

Have you watched a movie at Buena Vista Theater on a Disney Cruise?

We're sailing to the Fjords on Iona in early September. Husband is very keen to go to the cinema onboard. Is there a way to find out the current showings? Has anyone who has been on Iona recently able to share what's been showing on board?

Thank you! We've been holding off going to see Mission Impossible and Barbie in the hope that its showing in the cinema on Iona

I'll update my Iona live thread if the films change. But today we have the book club. Super mario. Guardians of the galaxy and quantumania.

I too was hoping for mission impossible or the last Indiana Jones film .

Thanks

Thanks for the update, much appreciated. Maybe the film offerings are a bit different in school holidays to cater for more kids on board? It will be interesting to see if the films change during your cruise. It's a shame as none of those films appeal at all to us. The latest Indiana Jones would be good too, despite the terrible reviews!

No, it fully deserved the terrible reviews...

My experiences on Iona has been that the films shown tend to be around three to five months after the cinema release date, as demonstrated by the current showing - Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was released to cinemas on the 16th February, Super Mario Bros was 5th April, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was 3rd May, and Book Club 2 was 12th May.

With Indiana Jones, Mission Impossible, and Barbie (which is surprisingly amusing) having cinema release dates of 28th June, 14th July, and 21st July, then I would expect the earliest they would be shown onboard to around October, if not November or December.

I honestly wouldn’t hold off on seeing something you want to see: the cinema isn’t that big and sometimes people get there very early (30 minutes before the screenings start it can be full), other times you can walk in as it’s starting and get seats. They do show things more than once, and several times a day, but still something that’s popular might prove difficult to get in to.

Basically what I’m saying is go and see Barbie - it’s brilliant and probably better on a cinema big screen than on the ship. Plus, it’s really the sort of film you can watch more than once so you could could watch it on board if you get chance 😊

I shall duly report back with the cinema listings when we're onboard 2-9th September!

Oblivion's Bubble Ship Could Have Been Much Different If It Weren't For Tom Cruise

"Oblivion" feels like the rare big-budget Tom Cruise vehicle that doesn't get talked about very much, despite being helmed by the A-lister's "Top Gun: Maverick" director Joseph Kosinski. The film casts Cruise as Jack Harper, a humble maintenance techie (and Yankees fan -- sports enthusiasts, judge him as you will) who oversees operations on Earth in the wake of an alien attack that forced humanity to abandon the planet. All is not what it seems, though, as Jack keeps having visions of a mysterious woman from his past (Olga Kurylenko), only for her to abruptly crash-land on Earth out of the blue (or into the blue, as I guess it were). Basically, if you were to chuck "The Twilight Zone," "2001: A Space Odyssey," the original 1977 "Star Wars," and a handful of other '60s and '70s sci-fi titles into a blender, you might come up with something like "Oblivion."

"Oblivion" aims for a blend of big sci-fi ideas, emotional storytelling, and spectacle similar to Kosinski's feature directing debut on "TRON: Legacy," albeit with less success. (Yes, I'm a "TRON: Legacy" defender; let's move on.) Even so, it works better than its middling critical reception might suggest , in no small part thanks to the stellar production design inspired by the intriguing concepts and arresting visuals in Kosinski's original unpublished comic book of the same name. That's particularly the case when it comes to that nifty bubble ship Jack uses to traverse the post-apocalyptic Earth in the movie.

Cruise being who he is, you would half-expect him to insist on the bubble ship being made for real so he could actually fly it. But although the production didn't go quite that far, Cruise nevertheless played a hands-on role in determining the vehicle's look for the film, specifically that of the cockpit.

Cruise Knows His Way Around The Cockpit

Being a fully licensed pilot, you can take Cruise's word when it comes to all things aeronautics. Moreover, for practical purposes, you can trust him when it comes to how to safely operate a plane (unlike certain other actors who shall remain nameless). All of his aero-know-how proved immensely helpful to "Oblivion" concept designer Daniel Simon while crafting the bubble ship during pre-production, as the latter explained in a 2013 interview with Ace Magazine (via Syfy ):

"There are actors who don't really have a relationship to the art department. They come to set and expect everything to be there. Tom saw the first drawings and was a part of it right from the beginning. Plus, he helped design the cockpit because of his expertise in flying. I can't fly an airplane or helicopter, he can. So he told us what would look best on-camera, what would make him comfortable acting. The biggest challenge was to make the seat comfortable. There's no secret about it, if you sit eight years in a chair, you suffer. It's not the healthiest position. So to make him, as an actor, very comfortable, this is specifically designed to his ergonomics."

Truth be told, the practical layout of the bubble ship's interior proves genuinely useful when it comes to the film's world-building and making it appear as though Cruise is honest-to-goodness using it to get around. It's those little touches that benefit Kosinski's film as a whole, giving it a little more substance to go beneath its shiny exterior. Throw in the fact that it's the rare original sci-fi movie to enjoy relative mainstream success over the last decade (and a fairly hard sci-fi movie at that), and "Oblivion" might just be due for a general re-evaluation.
