While Pereira itself might not be that pretty of a city, it sits in one of the most beautiful regions of Colombia and makes a good base for exploring the nearby towns of Salento and Manizales. Go in the early morning when most stalls are open and prices are competitive.

One of the main attractions of the coffee region is seeing how Colombia’s key export is made and then drinking some of the final product.

There are tons of fincas or farms where you can take tours to see how the owners grow, pick, dry, and process the coffee beans, and almost all of them culminate in a nice cup of Colombian brew.

You can DIY it by heading out to one of the farms like Don Manolo where they lead two tours per day to show you around their lush estate.

Or if you want to hit multiple producers and villages, you can book with a company like Viator that’ll provide transport out to Quindio, Pijao, or Santa Rosa de Cabal for tours and tastings.

9. Parque Regional Natural Ucumari

A natural reserve that’s filled with waterfalls, lush greenery, and miles of walking trails, this is the place for you if you enjoy spending time in nature.

Just southeast of the city, it contains a range of rustic but comfortable accommodations, from cabins to hostel beds to camping spots, all set in the middle of the wilderness.

Entry to the actual reserve is free, but you’ll have to arrive on foot via a six-kilometer trail from El Cedral – it’s worth it though! You can purchase meals here and relax by the fire at night while drinking hot chocolate and listening to animal sounds.

10. Take a Day Trip to the Cocora Valley and Salento

Pereira’s smaller and seemingly more popular little cousin, the village of Salento receives a ton of tourists for its proximity to the Valle de Cocora.

Even if you’re not staying there, be sure to make your way out to Salento to see these giant wax palms in the middle of the bright green valley.

They’re the iconic postcard image of Colombia’s coffee region and a sight to behold, whether or not you do the five-hour hike through the valley and into the cloud forest.

Afterwards, swing by the village to see Salento’s charming and colorful main square and have a meal of fresh trout.

11. Cafe Culture

You’re in the coffee region, so what better place to immerse yourself in a city’s cafe culture? In the past, rumor has it so many beans were exported that Colombians weren’t actually drinking too much of the quality stuff.

But a new wave of millennials and younger coffee producers are changing that by sourcing the best beans for independently owned coffee shops around Pereira.

So after you’ve tried Juan Valdez (the Colombian version of Starbucks, but better), hit some of the cool cafes for a really nice cup of joe… or fancy coffee drink.

El Barista, Cafetalex, Veredal , and Toranj are all good bets.

Then be sure to check out the colorful coffee jeeps on the side of the road because they serve up the freshest beans straight from the farm.

12. Otun Quimbaya Flora and Fauna Sanctuary

To get a glimpse of Colombia’s incredible biodiversity, check out this 489-hectare nature reserve southeast of Pereira (accessible via chiva bus). Otun Quimbaya has more than 300 species of birds, as well as two kinds of monkeys and tons of butterflies.

This tour was an exception. The description was inaccurate. There was very little walking (as advertised), little to no information about the places we visited, and no timeline given to the length of the tour in the description. Instead we spent the first hour driving from location to location in a bus to pick up other customers. Unfortunately our guide, Alvaredo (sp?), lacked information about the history, facts and culture of the city. He was unable to answer basic questions, snarky and in general unpleasant. They booked us a bilingual tour guide called Johanna. Johanna arrived on time to pick us up in the morning at 10:00 we had a fantastic day seeing all the sights. Lunch and snacks were Provided. We say more sights than we expected and the day ended with a hours salsa class, which we totally loved. Our day ended at 20:00 and I have to say that it was more than worth it. We had Richard as our tour guide, he was very nice and knowledgeable . We did the walled city, the Fort area, and we got to go in the Church in the walled city. It was beautiful. Its a great way to see quite a bit of Cartagena, and learn about the history also. The only area that may be a little problematic for someone with disabilities would be the fort area. Its at least 2 1/2 hour walk each way, they give you the option to return walking, on horse or on a boat, the horse is super fun, if you like adventure try it; the views are beautiful and majestic. Take snacks and plenty of water, there are no eating sites until you reach the beach. There is a restaurant where you can order food and they are really fast at serving, you can do this by yourself not necessarily with the tour guide. The beach water is super cold! be ready!. The tour itself is loudly commented (in Spanish, which I more or less understand) by a guy while a group is playing music in the back of the car. The bus starts from Bocagrande, follows the exterior of the old city walls, then ends up along the San Felipe caste where some song and dance is organized. Finally the bus stops by a disco and I do not know the rest of the trip, since I took a taxi and got back to the hotel. Little food (some empanadas went a round) and plenty of some coke-like drink laced with some low-quality whisky-flavored drink. Don Manolo’s, A Pereira Coffee Farm Tour

35 years ago, Hector Manuel Manolo purchased a small coffee farm and named it Don Manolo’s. Five years ago in 2011, it became a tourist attraction designed to indulge and educate coffee lovers. There are a variety of new and old techniques applied to create a high quality coffee that is well known and respected in Pereira. From the farm itself, visitors will enjoy a spectacular view of Pereira framed by coffee bushes and forest. Watch out for all the hummingbirds!

Owners Hector Manuel and his son Manuel Felipe, work to continually improve their product and to help educate visitors and the local community. Each one has their own philosophy about coffee.

• Manuel Felipe on coffee : “Definitivamente es un passion y me apassiona a saber todos los sabores y aromas que nacien al cafe.” Definitively it’s a passion, and I am passionate about knowing all the flavors and aromas that come from the coffee bean.
• Hector Manuel had a more poetic philosophy : “El cafe es recuerdo’s, el cafe es amor, el cafe es amistad, el cafe es interactuar, el cafe es social y muchos otros conceptos que difrutamos quando tomamos una taza de cafe.” Coffee is memories, coffee is love, coffee is friendship, coffee is interaction, coffee is social and many other ideas/concepts that we enjoy whenever we drink a cup of coffee.

Passion is evident in every part of what family Don Manolo’s does. In their plans for future expansion, they have opted to create a small on-site school for community enrichment and to help educate other coffee growers about better techniques and ideas. They also will offer lessons and workshops for barista training or personal enhancement.

Hector Manuel even shared a tid-bit of entrepreneur wisdom to those who wish to find themselves a place in the grand tradition of coffee: The most lucrative Point-Of-Sale is as a coffee roaster. This is where you will find the most profit potential. It requires expensive machinery and a couple extra steps, but you won’t suffer the overhead of a physical coffee shop nor a large coffee farm, if you aren’t fully inclined.

The Experience – Tasting, Field Tour & Processing

Upon arrival visitors are received and welcomed with a cup of “Dripper” V60 Manual Prep coffee. The coffee pot is placed on a scale and water is slowly poured onto a filter assembly to create a “drip” effect with precise measurements. When brewed in this way, the properties, smells and tastes are opened up and allowed to announce themselves to the palate.

During the tasting Hector, or Felipe will introduce visitors to the varieties and origins of the coffee grown in small lots at Don Manolo’s.

After the tasting, visitors are taken out the back door of the cafe/roasting area, to the coffee field, and introduced to the growing process. The intensity of the walk and the tour will vary on the motivation and intensity of the visitor.  Tours typically take 2-3 hours each to allow each person to indulge their interests. For this reason large groups are discouraged and prior reservations are a MUST!

In the Coffee Field portion of the tour, visitors will learn about the 3 processes that coffee production undergoes to make it into a cup of fresh-brew.

In each phase visitors will see, touch and feel first-hand how coffee is produced and prepared.

The farm is only 15-20 minutes from el Centro in Pereira, and will cost visitors about 10,000 for the trip. Try to negotiate the cost ahead of time to ensure a fair price.
