Absolutely brilliant tour

Absolutely brilliant tour. I took my daughter 7, who loves ghosts. Dispite getting a bit upset "Tommy Terror" was amazing with her. Once we finished the tour she couldn't stop talking about it. Definitely recommend the Edinburgh tour ❤️

My partner and I

My partner and I, fresh from an extended stay in Avernus, were looking for an opportunity to parake in some local flavor. Mr. Blood, tourguide for the dead, came highly recommended by our infernal friends. Six out of six stars, for their six times touring, they said. Of course we had to give him a chance. Our steed for this journey was very clearly a glamoured Nightmare, painted appropriately black with lovely purple mood lighting. We found our loyal steed comfortable and the ambiance delightfully necromantic, complementing the ghostly journey well. Mr. Blood himself was eccentric, enthusiastic, and energetic, providing interesting facts without overwhelming new initiates to the arts. The tour through the city and the walk through the shambles were all quite lovely, with Mr. Blood keeping away the more malevolent spirits... ghasts, wraiths, and drunk football fans... while we explored. He identified a ton of haunted pubs, inns, and locations we intend to revisit (to our own peril, perhaps) and provided much needed humor while we all suffered through the infernal Aich Ee Double Hockeysticks that is York traffic on a Saturday evening. From two infernal creatures to others, we strongly recommend you book a tasting of the supernatural with Mr. Blood.

The dick Turpin tour company - highway robbers…

Cedric Browne I assume is a fictional name of the tour guide presenting the tour from hell. More dick Turpin than bram stoker - robbery completely. Driven around london backwards straining to hear Cedric spew garbage on a bad quality audio - pointing out all the things I couldn’t see. A grotesque experience. The positive reviews are interesting- people all have 1 or 2 reviews - really?

Spooooky!!!!!

On the tour in Edinburgh last night 26/08. One of the highlights of our weekend, informative and so entertaining. Loved our conductor Spooky Samuel and Angus the driver. Do this tour if you can, we all loved it! Hilarious!

Ghost bus tour York

We did this ghost tour last night in York. We met our fantastic conductor ‘Norman Yates’, he was really funny and made the experience great. The tour was a brilliant way to see the city, with twists and turns on the way! You got to hear the background of York from ghost stories to horrible history. I think it’s a good idea to go on the bus when it’s going dark outside to get the full effect.

Fantastic tour guys !

We both came from Lisbon and decided not to take the standard bus tour around Edinburgh.. the best choice ever ! Such a fantastic welcoming and tour ! Will suggest easily to anyone who comes to visit Edinburgh. Well spent £18pp.

Great way of viewing the city of York

Great way of viewing the city of York, entertainment all the way through, suitable for all ages. We had to leave just before the last attraction due to a medical situation and I cannot thank the tour guide enough for how understanding, helpful and kind he was! I’d happily do this again if back in the area.

Tour cancelled due to covid pandemic

Tour cancelled due to covid pandemic. Requested a refund on 2x tickets. Request was rejected. T&C'S on own website clearly states if the tour is cancelled a refund would be given. Not impressed at all with this company. Beware

Absolutely fantastic

Absolutely fantastic, Earl E Grave and Bob were fantastic. Loved the stories and theatrical nature of the tour. Me and my partner went on the tour in York which is well worth it given the haunted nature of the city.

York Tour with Bobby and Robin

Had an amazing experience with Bobby and Robin around York yesterday. We was sat in our hotel and seen the bus parked up and then decided to book on, so glad we did.

Date of experience : August 05, 2022

London....Oh Dear.

This is the second Ghost bus tour we have done...the first being in York. Had high hopes because York was so good. ..sadly this one did not live up to expectations. £50 for two adults...on the bus which was half empty... Alastair Cringeworthy was the guide, and his performance was just that. Getting facts wrong...names wrong...Prince Andrew was not married to Queen Victoria... His commentary was ..weird. Feigning vomiting off the bus, then having haunted bowels? ...just not funny. Some of the comments were not appropriate for the young children on board...he just seemed out of his depth and his wailing and moaning for no reason whatsoever was cringey.... The bus is great. Oldy worldy with spooky feel......but even the driver seemed embarrassed to be there. I would not recommend this tour...sorry.

Very informative and good fun

Tommy Terror and his driver Angus took us around Edinburgh and told us all about its gruesome history, Tommy's enthusiasm and theatrics were very entertaining and I would recommend this tour to anybody visiting Edinburgh who has a taste for the macabre.

I would not recommend this tour. The best thing about it was the audio track they play while the bus is parked. It is not interesting or scary and not in the slightest bit entertaining. Save your money and don't waste it away on this tourist trap like I did.

myself and others wanted to take the ghost bus tour. It should have been easy and convenient since boarding was in front of my hotel. However their website was not allowing booking and the driver did not have anything to accept credit card payments. When I had asked the driver about availability of 7:30 about 25 minutes before then he did not say anything about that and just said to show up at 730

ghost bus tour review

Don't fall for the tourist trap! For our first trip to London from the States, we were excited to explore the city with our son. The ghost bus itself was great, but the acting was outright terrible. The gentleman actor shared it was his first night on the job, as he held out his hat for tips. His training was far from what I would call 'highly professional' as he dragged on his stories with multiple repeated statements, "ladies and gentlemen" and a prolonged death scene. I feel that we wasted an hour and a half of our limited time in the city doing the tour. We read other reviews (after the fact) and were surprised to see so many positive ones. The experience was very disappointing, and we hope that others do not have to suffer spending their time and resources.

Super cheesy, but hella fun. The tour departs from the Grand Hotel which is in the center of London. It's a gorgeous building and there's a tour guide standing in front to make sure you know where to go and you're in the right place. The bus is well, cheesy, but fun. It's an old "hertz" or funeral car as they say in London, and it's a double decker (which is helpful if the people on the top or the bottom are too chatty and you can't hear your tour guide). The tour takes tour through all of the prime locations in London which is AMaZING!!! You get to learn so much history and see beautiful sites. Beware, it's cheesy. I won't ruin the surprise but you've been warned, it's cheesy but fun.

Photo of Allie B.

I LOVED every minute of the interactive tour! I'm all about ghost stories and creepy history and this tour delivered. Guide was hilarious and spot on. So sorry I cannot remember his name to give him credit where due. If on the fence DO IT.

Photo of Craig G.

Absolutely great tour. Like a scary comedy show. Real history and legends. A full hour and a half of fun. Well worth the price.

ghost bus tour review

This is the perfect way to see London. You have the history, the sightseeing, the views all while being incredibly entertained. I am so glad I found this while looking at bus tours. Highly recommend!

Photo of Lynn D.

Not ghostly at all. In fact, very disappointing. I was hoping for "real" stories of ghosts, haunting, murders, death, mayhem...got none of that on this tour. It was a silly acting escapade that imparted nothing of value. Sorry to be blunt...do not waste your time.

Photo of Louie-Mae B.

As long as you are not expecting some Shakespearean experience and that it is all a bit naff, then you will have a brilliant time. I went with 2 friends from work and we had an absolute hooley on the tour. The actress was funny and freaky, the bus conductor/narrator was really funny, had a sharp sense of humour and you genuinely felt that he loves his job. We were giggling with the stupidity of it, the quirky little effects, the one liners that had us laughing out loud. There are loads of interesting historic facts along the way too. I can't recommend this enough. I was with a Canadian and a Lithuanian who have very different humour to me and they loved it too. Clean fun!

Photo of Arabella P.

Amazing tour to see the creepy side of Edinburgh. Driver's great and creepy. And tour guide's hilarious. The bus has a very creepy demeanour and you get to go to a haunted graveyard. It's also very interactive!

It's worth noting that expert guides share their expert knowledge of London's haunted past, adding depth and authenticity to the tour.

ghost bus tour review

The exact departure point is Northumberland Avenue just off Trafalgar Square. This is where the tour begins and ends. You can find the stop just outside the Grand Hotel. Across the street you have the Sherlock Holmes pub.

The tour follows the classic route that most bus tours take, covering all the major sites, including the famous crossing of the Tower Bridge.

The tours are available every day with varying departure times .

Traffic disruptions

Keep in mind that the time and day of your tour can impact your experience due to potential traffic disruptions. To avoid congestion, it's a good idea to opt for later tours rather than those during rush hour when the roads tend to be more busy.

The route can suffer changes due to road closures so it's best to double check the service updates before you book the tour. You can usually find great service updates on any of the hop-on hop-off buses pages. Their route is almost identical.

Live guides

Based on customer's reviews, it's worth noting that the tour isn't incredibly scary but rather highly entertaining. So, managing your expectations and relishing the overall experience is the way to go. Keep in mind that you'll be on a 60-year-old Routemaster bus, cruising through the streets of London, which is an amazing experience in itself.

Top tip : Capture the best shots of The London Eye, St. Paul's Cathedral, and the Tower of London by securing a seat on the left side of the bus

When booking online , you'll have access to the following ticket options:

Adult £25 Child £17 (Under 16)

Family £63 (2Ad +2Ch)

Concession £19

Arriving early can increase your chances of getting the best seats.

7. Conclusion of our Ghost Bus Tour review

Ghost Bus London offers a unique and worthwhile experience. The themed vintage bus alone provides a memorable journey through London. Despite a few less favorable reviews about the commentary, we believe the overall experience is still worth trying for its distinctive charm.

Ghost bus tour of London with kids – review

It doesn’t have to be Halloween to enjoy the spooky side of London – so if you’re looking to discover some of the darker tales from the city’s past, a ghost bus tour of London is the perfect way to do it.

Exterior of the black Routemaster double decker Necrobus at the start of the London Ghost Bus Tour on Northumberland Avenue - my review of the London Ghost Bus Tour with kids or without

Running year-round, the London Ghost Bus Tour is a city sightseeing tour with a difference, with a midnight black double-decker Routemaster bus taking you around the capital, listening to spine-chilling stories of murder and death – plus a very large helping of gothic comedy on the side.

If you’re looking for an unusual way to spend an evening in London with kids, hoping to entertain bored teens or simply fancy discovering a different side to the city, this is easily one of London’s quirkiest tours – so here’s everything you need to know in my Ghost Bus Tour of London review, with kids and without.

Contents - click to jump to a section

What is the Ghost Bus Tour of London?

A haunted bus with its own dark history whisks you around the centre and city of London, sharing tales of ghosts, murder, bloodshed and death along the way.

If you’re expecting a dry historical tour, you couldn’t be further from the truth – our flamboyant conductor brought the grisly stories to life, got passengers jumping from the get-go, and mixed plenty of jokes among the facts.

The route itself passes the Houses of Parliament, Downing Street and Whitehall, as well as venturing into the City of London past the Old Bailey, St Paul’s Cathedral, St Bartholomew’s Hospital, the Tower of London and across the river to Bankside.

Front view of the black doubledecker routemaster bus used for the Ghost Bus Tour of London, with spooky destinations on the front, including Trafalgar Scare, Notting Hell and Earls Corpse

Along the way, you’ll encounter famous fiends such as Sweeney Todd – and discover the true story behind 186 Fleet Street, one of London’s most famous ghost hoaxes, and the Crossbones Cemetery which proves that real life can be far darker than fiction.

There’s judicial murder, including the ghosts that haunt the site of old Newgate Prison, and grisly tales of aristocratic executions at the Tower of London, plus some of the country’s most famous hangings.

Along the way, as well as passing some of London’s most iconic landmarks, you’ll learn about medieval punishments, see the site where a King was beheaded and where a murderous Queen lies buried.

We heard tales of the Great Fire of London, and learned why Londoners believed it was a punishment for gluttony, as well as the passing a site that helped inspire Lewis Carroll’s Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland.

Buildings on Whitehall, as we passed Banqueting House, one of the stops visited on the London Ghost Bus Tour - my review

Plus the spooky story behind the Necrobus itself… this necropolis bus was once used as a funeral bus, it was the only one to survive a devastating fire, it has its own ghostly history – and perhaps a paranormal present (or could it just be technical trickery?)

Some stories are genuinely haunting – a nurse whose bony hand still rests on her fellows’ shoulder to remind them to take care after accidentally killing a patient, a ghost in Theatreland spotted in the place where a stabbed body was later discovered, and tales of tube train drivers who’ve seen spectral women walking across the tracks.

Not to mention a chance to see the capital all lit up at night, to a soundtrack of axes clashing and the conductor prowling unexpectedly through the aisles.

Our ghost bus conductor standing in the street by Cock Lane and under the golden boy of Pye Corner, one of the locations visited during the Ghost Bus Tour of London - my review

If you’re shivering in your seat reading this, fear not this is far more comedy horror than nightmare-inducing – it’s actually very funny, theatrically over-the-top and there are as many laughs as chills courtesy of the actors involved, the conductor in particular.

On a practical note, it’s all cleverly set up with TV screens at the front and back of the deck so you can see what’s happening without having to turn round, using some of the CCTV cameras on board.

The bus itself is one of the classic 1960s routemasters, given a spooky makeover – the decorative features include lamps by some of the windows, red velvet curtains and black and orange streamers on the ceiling during our tour just before Halloween.

Where does the London Ghost Bus Tour visit?

The Ghost Bus Tour route follows a loop through London – although very down-to-earth road closures mean you might end up taking a few diversions.

From Northumberland Avenue, you’ll head down Whitehall to Parliament Square and Westminster Abbey before returning to Trafalgar Square and heading along the Strand through Theatreland.

View of the side exterior of the black doubledecker bus used for the Ghost Bus Tour of London and passengers waiting to board - my London Ghost Bus Tour review with kids and without

The route continues along Fleet Street and through the City of London, with locations including St Paul’s and St Bartholomew’s, Pye Corner and the Old Bailey, Greyfriars and the Monument, over London Bridge to Southwark and back to the northern Embankment to finish the route.

That’s just an overview, but suffice to say, you cover a surprising amount of London – geographically and its history – during your 75-minute tour.

How scary is the Ghost Bus Tour of London?

The majority is more ghoulishly fun than terrifying, but this is a ghost tour after all, so there are definitely a few scary moments.

For starters, expect jump scares right from the start – my husband was caught out as he was about to climb up to the top deck, and as several other passengers discovered, it pays to keep your eyes on the conductor to avoid a fright.

Detail reading Necrobus Transport on the side of the black doubledecker bus used for the Ghost Bus Tour of London, with illuminated lamps visible inside through red velvet curtains - my London Ghost Bus Tour review

Without giving too much away, you won’t only find ghostly tales from London’s past while you’re on board – the ghost bus has its own secrets…

With flickering lights and a few genuinely unnerving moments (albeit fairly short-lived with plenty of jokes to diffuse the tension), it’s pleasurably scary for adults and teens, but if you have younger kids who are prone to nightmares, it might be one to postpone for a few years…

Get a discount on tickets if you book via Tiqets using my link and the code MUMMYTRAVELS6

Is the London Ghost Bus suitable for kids?

The short answer is that it depends on the age of the children and how easily unnerved they are – the website says it’s not suitable for kids aged 1-5 although it’s down to parental discretion, so younger kids can come on board at parents’ risk.

There were several families on our London Ghost Bus tour, with all the kids aged 10+, and while there were a few nervous moments (including for the adults!), there was nothing too terrifying.

I definitely wouldn’t try it with toddlers and younger kids as there are moments when it’s dark and spooky, and sensitive older kids (7-12) might not enjoy the end, but teens and those who enjoy being a bit scared will love it.

The conductor was good at choosing adults for the audience interaction sections and the jump scares too.

Me and my husband pretending to look alarmed and scared in our seats on the top deck of the London Ghost Bus Tour

The other point to bear in mind is that quite apart from the stories of murders and death, there’s a fair amount of risque content – mostly double entendres and other jokes which would probably go over the heads of younger passengers. But if you don’t fancy explaining what a ‘lady of the night’ is, it’s worth knowing in advance!

There are also no toilets on the bus; again, little problem for older ones when the whole experience takes under 90 minutes though. There’s also no space for buggies/pushchairs.

Tips for the London Ghost Bus Tour

It’s well worth getting there early – you’re recommended to turn up around 15 minutes beforehand, but I’d suggest making it 20 or 25 minutes if you want a good seat.

We arrived around 20 minutes early and there was already a queue; we ended up boarding almost straight away, and by 15 minutes before departure, the top deck was almost entirely full.

It’s also worth sitting on the left hand side of the bus. There’s plenty to see from both sides, but from our position on the right hand side, it felt like we were being directed to look out of the opposite windows a lot.

Part of the interior of the doubledecker ghost bus, with black and orange streamers on the ceilings, maroon leather seats and small lamps by the velvet curtains - my London Ghost Bus Tour review

You won’t miss out on either side though, but if you are early and have a choice of seats, that would be my pick.

Some seats face backwards if you or your kids are prone to travel sickness. There are no seatbelts, as with any standard bus in London, though we never felt unsafe.

There are also several departures per night, so bear in mind that traffic will be worse for the earlier ones – you might end up with more time on the bus as a result, but you’ll also be sitting around a lot more.

While you’re advised to allow 75 minutes, our 9pm tour was finished by around 10pm as the roads were clear, but I’d expect a 6pm tour to be slower.

It’s also worth considering what time sunset it: as our Ghost Bus Tour of London review trip was in October, even the earliest departure was after dark, but if you’re visiting in summer, early autumn or late spring, you may need a later tour to see the city after dark.

The Ghost Bus Tour of London: Need to know

The London Ghost Bus tour departs daily from 8 Northumberland Avenue, outside the Grand Hotel and opposite the Sherlock Holmes pub.

It’s minutes from Embankment and Charing Cross tubes, as well as from the Strand and Trafalgar Square.

Exterior of the black Routemaster double decker Necrobus at the start of the London Ghost Bus Tour on Northumberland Avenue - my review of the London Ghost Bus Tour with kids or without

The tour takes around 75 minute depending on traffic, with multiple departures per night depending on the time of year – during school holidays around Halloween, you can expect as many as six departures per night between 6pm and 9.15pm, while on other days there may only be two, at 7.30pm and 9pm.

Tickets cost from £25 for adults, £17 for kids aged 5-15, or you can buy family tickets (two adults, two children) for £63. You can also buy tickets with free cancellation from Get Your Guide and Tiqets

London Ghost Bus Tours

The Ghost Bus Tours – Review – ★★★★

History lessons don’t come much more irreverent than the ghost bus tours – perfect family fun on a dark night in the capital., the ghost bus tours | daily departures from 8 northumberland avenue | £24 (family & discount tickets available).

Several years ago, probably mid-dash across a wet and windy Trafalgar Square, several family members spotted the odd sight of an old, black, Routemaster bus rounding the corner from Northumberland Avenue onto the Strand, velvet window curtains swinging and miniature lamps tipping backwards and forwards. In place of the expected advertising for a new cinema release or some such, the side of the bus declared itself as host to The Ghost Bus Tours of London.

Fast-forward to Betwixtmas 2021, at the end of a year resolutely lacking in much fun and frivolity (though, arguable, not as bad as 2020…), and we finally took a trip aboard the Ghost Bus with aforementioned family hoping for little more than some comic relief.

The Ghost Bus Tours

Reader, The Ghost Bus Tours are that rare mainstream tourist experience – they deliver! Our host/conductor for the evening, Charlie Ballentine, gamely and enthusiastically led us on a gruesome yet merry tour of some of central London’s haunted hot-spots, with the bus itself playing the second half of a thoroughly entertaining double act. Entertaining, yes: jokes (mostly puerile, all funny), moments of the finest hammy drama, and even some impromptu improv ‘magic’. But also – brace yourselves – informative. You’ll learn something with Ghost Bus Tours: interesting facts about grizzly deaths and ensuing ghostly apparitions which you can pass off as your own knowledge when next you have occasion to show off.

The Ghost Bus Tours experience is ideal for anyone who feels like they’ve done it all in London – or, for those with out-of-towners to entertain for an hour or so. Take your best sense of humour, and leave any distaste for ill-fitting curtains or toilet humour at home for the night. Oh, and keep an eye and ear out for mysterious happenings – there might be more passengers aboard than you think…

About York Ghost Bus Tour

Before we delve into the York Ghost Bus Tour review, here is a quick introduction to the tour and all the valuable information you need to know.

What is York Ghost Bus Tour?

York Ghost Bus Tour is a sightseeing tour aboard a vintage Routemaster bus. It takes you around the city centre, sharing ghastly stories and haunted sights along the route.

The tour discusses dark tales of misery, misfortune and death but delivers them with a touch of comedy that will leave you laughing. It is a unique combination of dark tourism and comedy show unlike anything else.

York Ghost Bus Tour Review - Necrobus

How long is the ghost bus tour in York?

The tour lasts 75 minutes, which is primarily delivered while you’re on the bus. However, mid-way through the tour there is a short walk off the bus to explore the Shambles.

Is York Ghost Bus Tour worth visiting?

For anyone who loves to explore the darker side of the city, York Ghost Bus Tour is a must!

I’ve always had a fascination for haunted locations and ghost stories. Which makes ghost walks one of my favourite activities to do!

However, this was the first time I’ve been on a ghost bus!

The real advantage of the Ghost Bus tour over a ghost walk is that you can visit haunted locations a little further out from the city centre. Even though I’ve done several ghost walks in York, I visited lots of new locations on the bus tour, which I haven’t seen before.

The other advantage of the bus over a ghost walk is the ability to integrate additional theatrical elements. Thanks to screens on the bus, additional media and film footage is used to create a backstory to the ghost bus, which can’t be achieved on a traditional ghost walk.

Overall, if you enjoy ghost walks and are looking for a new experience, or you are looking for an experience that enables you to rest your feet after a long day of sight-seeing, York Ghost Bus Tour is definitely worth visiting!

How to book your York Ghost Bus Tour experience

You can book your York Ghost Bus Tour tickets here .

Our tour was gifted by Get Your Guide, which is my preferred experience booking platform.

I love how easy it is to find and book tours using Get Your Guide. The app contains all the information you need about your tour, including your tickets, important things to know before your tour, plus the option to navigate to your start point when you are ready to start the tour.

The app also uses push notifications to remind you when your tour is due to take place. Plus, it includes direct contact information with the tour provider should you encounter any last-minute problems.

As someone who typically relies on printed tickets and booking information, it was refreshing know that everything I needed was available and easy to find in one place.

York Ghost Bus Tour Review

Here is my detailed York Ghost Bus Tour review. It includes a thorough overview of the various elements of the tour and my thoughts on the experience.

First Impressions

Seeing the classic Routemaster bus roll up to the bus stop is an incredible sight! The suitably black-painted bus has an air of intrigue and mystery to it, which certainly set the tone for our trip!

Once on board, the decor continues the eerie atmosphere. Black leather seats and red velvet curtains adorn the inside of the bus. Vintage lamps are positioned on small red ledges throughout, which creates a ‘haunted house’ aesthetic. It does a fantastic job of setting the scene!

The care and attention that has gone in to choosing appropriate decor for the bus, both inside and out is clear. Plus, it really emphasises the eerie feel that sets the tone for the experience.

York Ghost Bus Tour Review - On the ghost bus

One of the main benefits of a ghost bus tour over a regular ghost walk is that you can visit more haunted sights. Plus, you can visit sights that are not located directly in York’s city centre.

As you kick back and relax, you’ll hear ghost stories of famous sights such as The Shambles and York Minster. However, the bus also takes you to sights slightly further away such as Dick Turpin’s grave and Knavesmire.

It was great to discover some new haunted sights on the tour, rather than just visiting the regular haunts that most ghost tours visit.

However, the only slights downside I noticed to the bus tour was that many of the stories about each site had to be told quickly as you were driving past, so you didn’t get a lot of time to admire each spot. However, this did enable us to see a lot of sights on the tour, so it was a reasonable trade off!

At one point you also hop off the bus briefly to explore The Shambles. Given this is a pedestrian street, I like the fact they have still found a way to include it in the tour. Plus, it is a wonderful way to stretch your legs part way through the ride.

The Tour Guide

I would be remiss to not call out the tour guide on the York Ghost Bus Tour. Your conductor acts as your guide to ghostly York, and what a fantastic job he did!

The guide was not only knowledgeable about the sights and their hauntings but was an integral part of the overall experience.

Your guide is key in setting the tone throughout the journey and does so with their theatrical act. On the extremely warm night when we visited, he was running up and down stairs, screaming hysterically, cracking jokes, and telling the haunting tales with sufficient melodrama to have us crying with laughter.

With so much of the experience riding on the tour guide, it was fantastic to see that York Ghost Bus Tours has such a fun and enthusiastic one who went beyond to deliver a memorable tour.

York Ghost Bus Tour Review - Conductor

The comedy of the ghost bus tour really surprised me. I wasn’t expecting to laugh so much!

Many of the ghost walks I have experienced in the past use comedy as they deliver the tragic tales to make the experience more family friendly. I knew that York Ghost Bus Tour advertises itself as a ‘comedy-horror tour’, but I wasn’t expecting to laugh as much as I did!

Much of the humour on the tour is designed for a family audience and is designed to make the show less frightening. However, there was a healthy dose of adult humour thrown in too, which had us laughing so much we were crying!

The comedy is inserted so well, it doesn’t take away from the horror of the stories. Instead, it provides some light relief and is a great transition from one location to the next.

Despite the comedic delivery of the script, there are some truly horrifying moments on the bus too!

Each of the ghost stories told touches on some element of horror, from execution to suicide and murder. Even though the stories are told with an air of comedy, they do touch on some dark topics.

In addition to the ghost stories, there is an underlying backstory about the bus itself which unfolds throughout the journey. This is delivered through the screens on the bus.

The backstory is a terrific way to tie the overall journey together, plus, it makes the tour much more interactive. Parts of the narrative are likely to make you jump and could be quite frightening for young children.

However, the horror is quickly followed by further comedy elements to keep you on your toes and to help you instantly recover from those frightening moments!

I was relieved to find that the York Ghost Bus Tour does not use live actors throughout the tour. You are simply guided by your conductor and your driver. The use of live actors always terrifies me, so I was pleased to discover that no one unexpectedly jumps out of nowhere!

If you are like me and don’t like experiences that include live actors, you will enjoy York Ghost Bus Tour as you have nothing to fear! Don’t let the thought of it put you off as you will miss out!

Final Thoughts

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed York Ghost Bus Tour! This surprising experience was equally scary and hilarious and had me laughing much more than I expected!

The idea of a Ghost Bus tour is a novel and unique way to discover hidden parts of York and the horrific tales that go with them.

I was a little hesitant going into the experience, as I was concerned the tour might be too scary. I’m a fan of ghost stories and their history but not so much a fan of horror and frightening experiences! However, the ghost bus tour really struck the perfect balance between creepy and comedy.

If you’re looking for unique things to do in York on your next visit. the York Ghost Bus Tour is the perfect evening activity. Especially since it gives you the opportunity to rest your feet, plus, you can enjoy the tour no matter the weather!

How wonderful! Gosh, this is right up my (back) alley!

York Ghost Bus tour is such a fantastic experience, I hope you get an opportunity to try it out!

I have never done a bus tour like this, although have some a number of ghost walks including in York. But I do like that you are able to go a little further than you can on foot. Sounds like a great tour and a fun experience, perfect for this time of year

I agree! I love a ghost walk and have done several before, including a handful in York, but the bus tour was such a different experience! I got to visit many new spots since we’re able to cover a longer distance. It was a fantastic evening!

Gosh, this sounds like something I’d love! I know you mentioned they don’t recommend for young children, but what do you think about taking a young 7 year old? Is it violent? Or just spooky?

York Ghost Bus tour is so much fun! Personally, I think it depends on the child. There are a few bits shown on the TV screens that are quite creepy and relate to possession, but they are quickly followed up by some comedy from the conductor. Some of the stories are also a bit gruesome but they are delivered in a ‘horrible histories’ style way so some kids might be ok with it. I’m not sure me and my brother would have enjoyed the experience when we were as young as seven, but to be honest I expected to find it frightening as an adult before I went so I’m a bit of a wimp by comparison! Most seven-year-olds are probably braver than I am!

Great tips. I must admit I’m not much for the scary side of things, but your description of the comedy portion might convince me to change my mind for this one.

York Ghost Bus tour is very very funny! It’s a great, family-friendly tour with a touch of spooky but lots of comedy and entertainment! I was expecting it to be too scary for me but I had a fantastic time and laughed so much!

This sounds like so much fun. I am definitely adding this to my itinerary for my trip to York.

It is a brilliant tour – I didn’t expect to laugh so much! I hope you have an opportunity to visit soon!

This looks like SUCH a fun activity! I love learning about a destination’s darker side and this bus tour seems like the perfect way to do it by mixing the horror with comedy. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I’ve never been on a ghost bus tour before, but it sounds like such a fun experience! Good thing that they don’t use live actors along the tour, it’s always weird interacting with one!

Haha I agree! I visited a scary attraction with live actors before and it was terrifying! I’m so glad York Ghost Bus tour doesn’t incorporate any! It is a brilliant tour, we had so much fun!

This sounds really fun! I’ve never done anything like this before.

The York Ghost Bus tour was such a unique experience, I’d love to do it again – we had so much fun!

This looks like it would be so much fun to do.

I really enjoyed York Ghost Bus tour – it was so fun and such a unique way to see York!

This is definitely a unique way to see the city! Not only do you learn about some of the spookier parts of York, but it’s also a fun way to explore.

It was so much fun! The spooky ghost stories were so interesting and the Routemaster was such a fun way to travel! Everyone’s heads were turning as we drove past!

This sounds like a great tour! I love that there is a mix of funny and scary stuff!

I was really surprised by how funny the tour way! The got the balance between spooky and entertaining just right!

oh how fun – though I’m glad there’s some humour to even out the scares!! I like ghost stories but wouldn’t want to be TOO scared so this sounds like a great mix!

I agree! I love a ghost story, but I don’t love frightening experiences. It was definitely entertaining and very funny though – I’d definitely recommend it!

I’m always drawn to ghostly, crime content, so this tour sounds super interesting! I’ll save this for when I visit York. Thanks for this review!

Ah me too! You’ll absolutely love this tour! I hope you get an opportunity to try it out soon – thanks for reading!

Went on the bus ghost tour with Malika as the guide and it was AMAZING! Malika was professional, personable, funny, and really knew her history and folklore. Clearly, Malika is someone who is proud of their heritage, religion, and this city, and it shows. Not only did I have fun, but I learned a ton about the city's not so cheery past, the history of Voodoo, burial techniques, and more. Highly recommend!

The London Ghost Bus Tour Review

Ghost Bus

The London Ghost Bus is an excellent comedy horror sightseeing tour.

With Halloween soon approaching you might want to do something a little bit different. In October 2013 I did just that for www.whatsgoodtodo.com and had a great fun experience that I can thoroughly recommend. On a dark Friday night in October I was booked onto The Ghost Bus Tours in London – a theatrical sightseeing tour around some of London’s most haunted sites. Comedy and spooky horror fused together onboard a classic 1960s London Routemaster Bus.

On arrival at the bus stop on Northumberland Avenue (just outside the Grand Hotel and opposite the Sherlock Holmes pub, just off Trafalgar Square) you are given a number – for what reason I did not know at the time. When the black double decker bus arrives you board when your number is called and take a seat anywhere you like. It is quite dark on the bus with each seating area having its own lamp for lighting. The bus is also equipped with TV screen, front and rear, so that you don’t have to keep turning around to see what is happening. There are also several cameras onboard so you can see what happens throughout the bus, including under your seat. All good so far apart from the crazy conductor lady running around the bus knocking on windows and staring in at you.

After some safety information the tour begins.

Now without going into too much detail and spoiling the tour for you if you want to go yourself, you are taken around sites that are reported to be haunted, scenes of gruesome murders or mass death such as Tower of London, St Paul’s Cathedral, Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey and other lesser known sites but just as haunted. Each spooky tale is delivered with spooky comedy and despite the gruesome and scary topics will have you laughing all the way around (we even got to find out here the phrase “laughing your head off” came from.

Overall, this is a great comedy horror sightseeing tour. The 2 tour guides (bus conductor and health and safety officer) were absolutely brilliant. They interacted well with the passengers and on some occasions with people outside the bus while stopped at traffic lights, most of who seemed bemused at what was going on but most joined in the fun. The whole tour lasts about 1 hour 15 minutes (depending on traffic, so expect to be onboard the bus longer) and it is non-stop comedy, horror, stories and facts about our capital city.

At £21 for an adult ticket (£15 for under 16s and students) it is excellent value for money and I would love to go again. Is absolutely perfect for Halloween.

A great night out, extremely funny, highly recommended and one that I will have to do again!

Rating: 5/5

Tickets cost: £25 (adult), £17 (child), £63 (family, 2 adults 2 children)

Ghost bus tour York

We did this ghost tour last night in York. We met our fantastic conductor ‘Norman Yates’, he was really funny and made the experience great. The tour was a brilliant way to see the city, with twists and turns on the way! You got to hear the background of York from ghost stories to horrible history. I think it’s a good idea to go on the bus when it’s going dark outside to get the full effect.

Had an amazing experience with Bobby and Robin around York yesterday. We was sat in our hotel and seen the bus parked up and then decided to book on, so glad we did.

Date of experience : 05 August 2022
