Leisure Vacations for Retired Couples

After decades of working or raising a family, taking a leisure vacation as a retired couple can be a wonderful way to relax, reset, and rejuvenate. Soak in some leisure time, just the two of you—and explore all the wonderful sights the world has to offer.

Take a Cruise

Cruises are one of the most popular vacations for older couples—and it makes sense. If you opt for a cruise vacation, you can enjoy a number of activities, fancy dinners, or even late-night balls. You can also swim in the pool, attend exercise or yoga classes, and play games with fellow cruise-goers.

Cruises are one of the best vacations for senior couples who might have different ideas of what they want out of a vacation. Taking a cruise provides the best of everything—so you can spend quality time with your partner while also exploring your own interests and favorite leisure activities. Stopping at ports allows you to witness a new city for a few hours and then provide reason to go back and spend more time. You can cruise the oceans or on a riverboat, a popular option for seniors as of late.

Cruises are also a wonderful way to spend time with other friends—particularly if they are also a retired couple looking for a leisurely vacation. Attending a cruise with another pair of couple friends makes the time even more enjoyable. You can split off and do your own thing but reconvene later in the night for dinner, cocktails, and a beautiful sunset. What’s not to love?

Go to an All-Inclusive Resort

For many senior couples, an all-inclusive resort offers stress-free, joy-filled travel. With very few exceptions, everything you need at an all-inclusive resort is covered by the initial price—from accommodations to meals to daily activities.

There are a number of wonderful couples-only resorts that offer romantic and luxurious experiences. Try Canyon Ranch in the Berkshires , a transformational wellness resort that offers curated services based on your individual goals. The all-inclusive resort offers more than 35 daily activities spanning from yoga and guided meditation to cooking classes and outdoor excursions. Plus, you’ll have access to a full-service spa, tennis courts, cycling studios, and two pools.

Or consider the Red Mountain Resort located in southern Utah. Beautifully situated between the red rock cliffs, Red Mountain Resort offers various all-inclusive retreat packages that include nutritious, balanced meals along with daily fitness classes, guided hikes, and more. If you’re feeling adventurous, join a day trip to Zion National Park or spend your afternoon enjoying a full-body massage.

Small Group Tours

If you want to enjoy a guided tour through a new destination, consider small group tours. Exploring the world accompanied by a small group of fellow senior travelers—and led by an experienced guide—can provide a sense of confidence and offer companionship.

There are countless small group tours available, many of which are particularly designed for senior couples on vacation. Road Scholar is one of our favorite tour options, offering tours in more than 100 countries and in all 50 states. All of their programs are ranked by level of activity, so depending on your overall mobility and confidence with physical activity, you can find the perfect tour.

ElderTreks also offers a number of travel tours designed for people over the age of 50. Catering to a retired audience, ElderTreks offers small group adventures in over 100 countries. Choose the perfect trip for you—from active hiking trips in the Andes Mountains to exciting expeditions in Asia.

Destination Vacations for Seniors Couples

A destination vacation for senior couples can be a fantastic time to cross off a few destinations on your bucket list. Have you always dreamed of visiting some of the world’s most beautiful and memorable areas? Your golden years are the perfect time to venture on a destination vacation as a senior couple. Take a look at the following best places for older couples to vacation abroad.

The Danube River

The second-longest river in Europe, the Danube flows throughout much of central and southeastern Europe—through Hungary, Austria, Serbia, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Croatia, Ukraine, Germany, and Romania.

The Smithsonian offers an exciting Danube River Cruise . Over the course of two weeks, you’ll discover nine countries and many World Heritage sites as you cruise through the heartland of central and eastern Europe. You’ll see ancient capitals, quaint villages, and many magnificent churches, castles, and palaces.

Viking River Cruises also offers several different Danube River cruises ranging in length and destination. Regardless of which cruise you’ll pick, safely explore the best vacation spots for older couples along the Danube River, with an intimate and dramatic look into Europe’s history.

The Canadian Rockies

For the slightly more adventurous retired couple looking for a vacation spot, the Canadian Rockies are a must-visit. The Rocky Mountains promise wildlife, incredible views, and plenty of enjoyable outdoor activities. Depending on your preferred level of activity, you can try hiking, biking, kayaking, canoeing, and so much more.

Train vacations in the Canadian Rockies are a particularly popular option. You can see panoramic views of the mountains, meet new couples, and explore the world—all from the comfort of a train.

If you’d prefer to settle down and relax at a luxury resort, consider booking a trip to the Canadian Rocky Mountain Resorts (CRMR) . CRMR is home to a number of stunning resort properties throughout the Rockies, gourmet dining options, and plenty of fun outdoor activities.

The Caribbean

One of the best vacation spots for retired couples is the picture-perfect Caribbean. For traveling seniors, choose an all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean to enjoy a mix of luxury, accessibility, and serenity.

One of our favorites is Sailrock in South Caicos , a slightly more remote and secluded island that’s perfect for the senior couple looking for peace and quiet. The resort offers all-inclusive meal options, state-of-the-art swimming pools, and the most beautiful beaches you’ve ever seen.

Another great option is the Excellence Punta Cana , one of the top all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic. This is an adults-only resort located on the northeast coast, featuring white-sand beaches, tropical forests, and stunning dunes. If a romantic getaway has been on your bucket list, this resort is perfect for you as one of the most relaxing vacation spots for older couples.

United States Vacations for Senior Couples

Some of the best vacation spots for senior couples can be found within the United States. If you’re in the mood to stay within the country and explore all that America has to offer, keep reading for senior-friendly activities and vacation spots.

The Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is one of the best vacations for older couples interested in seeing one of America’s most famous natural wonders. Stretching nearly 300 miles from end to end, the Grand Canyon descends more than a mile to the canyon’s floor.

A great vacation idea for older couples, the Grand Canyon is home to a number of attractions, adventures, and activities. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can try hiking and biking on paved trails at the Canyon. For history buffs, visit the Yavapai Museum of Geology , Verkamp's Visitor Center , Hopi House , and Kolb Studio .

You can also explore the Grand Canyon with airplane or helicopter tours , hiking adventures , and even rafting expeditions .

The Pacific Coast Highway

The classic Pacific Coast Highway is one of the most famous drives in the entire world—and it’s also one of the best vacations for retired couples. Spanning from Washington to California, the Pacific Coast Highway is a picturesque, memorable vacation. Driving Highway 1 means hours of quality time together cruising near stunning bluffs and scenic outlooks with sparkling ocean views.

A Pacific Coast Highway adventure offers something for everyone. Stop by the Bixby Bridge in Big Sur for an incredible photo opp before finding a lunch spot nearby. If you’re a big reader, stop at the Henry Miller Memorial Library . As you continue toward Los Angeles, check out the Getty Center and explore the galleries within.

However you tackle your Pacific Coast Highway expedition, do a bit of research in advance to plot out where you’d like to stop and visit. But one of the joys of a good road trip is being spontaneous—so if you see a roadside attraction that looks fun, don’t be afraid to pause and explore.

Visit National Parks

One of the best vacations for older couples, the National Parks span 27 states in the United States with each one filled with natural wonders ideal for exploring. Plus, the National Parks offer discounted rates for seniors over the age of 62—an annual pass is just $20 and a lifetime pass is $80.

America’s National Parks offer stunning natural wonders for you to observe and explore. Plus, you’ll enjoy volcanoes, glaciers, caves, fossilized trees, deserts, and more. Some of the most popular National Parks include Arches in Utah, Yellowstone in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, and Mesa Verde in Colorado.

Family-Focused Vacations for Older Couples

Family-focused vacations for older couples are a wonderful way to build long-lasting memories with your loved ones—including your grandchildren or your children. From opting for a week at an amusement park with the grandkids to planning a family reunion, some of the best vacation ideas for older couples are ones centered on family.

Go to an Amusement Park with the Grandkids

A popular vacation idea for retired couples, planning an amusement park trip with your grandkids is a surefire way to make memories together—and provide you with a great opportunity to bond with your family members and loved ones.

If you’re looking for an amusement park to explore, consider the Epcot Theme Park in Orlando, Florida, and their innovative ride Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure. You’ll race with Remy—the gourmand rat star of Ratatouille and feel like you’re traveling through the streets of Paris. This ride is perfect for preschoolers and other young fans of Ratatouille.

For any dinosaur lovers, check out Universal Orlando’s Islands of Adventure theme park. This park includes a prehistoric journey to Jurassic Park with the VelociCoaster, a thrilling roller coaster that catapults up to 70 miles per hour and more than 150 feet in the air. If your grandkids love an exhilarating ride and an exciting day spent at the theme park, consider a trip to Orlando.

Perfect for the animal lovers in your family, The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash is located at Universal Studios in Hollywood, California. With a minimum height requirement of 34 inches and an endearing puppy theme, The Secret Life of Pets is ideal for preschoolers or grandkids who prefer a gentle and comfortable ride.

Plan a Family Reunion

A family reunion can be a wonderful vacation idea for older couples. Not only will you strengthen bonds between relatives and reunite with family members you might not see frequently, but you might also be able to make a road trip out of it.

Planning a family reunion can be complicated. If you’re considering a family reunion as a vacation idea for older couples, here are a few tips:

  • Start by picking a date and a location. Is there a location that is particularly convenient for most family members? Or is there a time of year that works best for everyone’s schedules? Start by talking with fellow family members and consider sending out a questionnaire to figure out the best destination for your family reunion.
  • Delegate tasks. Depending on the size of your family and how many loved ones will attend your reunion, delegate tasks as necessary. Consider if you’ll need to make reservations at restaurants, plan and organize activities for all age groups, organize a potluck, or even create signs and name tags to get the party started.
  • Find activities that bring your family together. Choosing activities that cater to everyone’s needs can be challenging. As you prepare for your family reunion, consider what activities can bring your family members together—particularly ideas for all ages.

Take a Cross-Country Train Ride

One of our favorite vacation ideas for retired couples is taking a cross-country train ride—and when you bring family or loved ones along with you, it makes the experience even better. Train travel is a comfortable, scenic, and relaxing way to explore the world.

Plus, if you’re dealing with any mobility challenges or physical limitations, enjoying a cross-country train ride can be a great option.

Some of our favorite cross-country train rides include a leisurely ride on Amtrak’s Empire Builder from Chicago to Glacier National Park in Montana. You’ll experience Big Sky country as you explore this stunning National Park. In addition to the round-trip train ticket, this getaway also includes a boat cruise in the scenic Two Medicine Valley, a ride along the Going-to-the-Sun Road, and a tour of the Lake McDonald Valley.

For a completely different atmosphere, consider this roundtrip train ride from New York City to Montreal and Quebec . In five days, you’ll navigate through three incredible cities and experience Montreal and Quebec’s old-world charm.

Close to Home Vacations for Senior Couples

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a close-to-home vacation for senior couples—in fact, staying nearby can give you the opportunity to see your city or your state in a new light and admire all the gems it has to offer. You never know, one of the best vacation spots for elderly couples may be in your own city or backyard.

Enjoy a Staycation

If you’re not up for a long trip out of town, enjoy a staycation. This can be a great option for a senior couple to feel like they’re experiencing a getaway—without having to travel far at all. Here are some of our favorite ideas for enjoying a staycation, all from the comfort of your own home:

  • Be a tourist in your city. Create an itinerary with a list of places in your city you’ve never tried. It can be easy to forget all of your city’s hidden gems—so take this time to discover something new and find a new favorite coffee bar, cocktail speakeasy, or even a cute boutique.
  • Bring the adventure to your home. Thanks to modern technology, many senior citizens can travel the world via a computer or mobile app. Many museums, national parks, and zoos offer virtual tours and interactive online exhibitions. Try visiting the Louvre, Virtual Yosemite Tours , Yellowstone Virtual Tours , Monterey Bay Aquarium , and the San Diego Zoo .
  • Cook an elaborate meal. Have you always wanted to cook an elaborate or particular meal but haven’t had the right ingredients or the time? Select a recipe you’ve always wanted to enjoy—perhaps a dish from one of your favorite countries—and get all the ingredients you need. You can even include your family members or friends in the festivities and invite them over for a potluck or dinner party.

Stay a Night Downtown

Staying in your own city as a senior couple can be an exciting and romantic way to explore all the hidden gems near you. Maybe there’s a quaint bed and breakfast or a luxurious boutique hotel in your hotel that’s calling your name. This might be the perfect opportunity to book a night or two and take a relaxing trip together.

Once you’ve found the perfect place to stay, put together a short itinerary of fun activities you can do together. Are there wineries or cocktail bars nearby? Museums or other attractions? Make a list of anything you’d like to visit during your night downtown—and make the most of it.

Take a Day Trip

Find a local treasure in your area and plan a day trip with your partner or spouse. This can be a wonderful option, particularly if you’re feeling spontaneous and don’t want to deal with the hassle of planning an adventure that requires overnight stays or complicated travel plans.

Benefits of Traveling Together

Traveling together as a senior couple comes with a number of positive benefits—from staying active and connected to gaining confidence in yourself and your abilities.

  • You’ll stay active. Staying active in your golden years is important. Without a doubt, traveling is one of the most enjoyable ways to get your steps in, tackle a new activity, and keep your body—and your mind!—active. Plus, it’s even better if you’re outside with stunning views.
  • You’ll gain confidence. As you age, you might start feeling moments of insecurity or anxiety about your age, your mobility, or even your mental capacity. During this time, your friends and family members might even start trying to make life easier for you. Traveling can help you regain your sense of confidence and help you feel stronger about what you’re capable of achieving.
  • Y ou’ll bond with your partner. Exploring new places with your partner will help you deepen your bond and learn new things about one another. Even if you’ve been together for decades, seeing your partner or spouse in a new environment or a new culture will remind you of all the characteristics you love about them.
  • You’ll have new experiences and meet new people. No matter if you’re a naturally adventurous person or if you prefer a serene vacation spent with your spouse, traveling almost always pushes you out of your comfort zone and encourages you to try new things. Plus, depending on what type of vacation you pick, you might even meet new people and make new friends!

Tips for Traveling Together

As a senior couple embarking on a trip together, you’ll want to be prepared. Here are our top tips for making your trip together the best one yet.

  • Buy travel insurance. If you’re traveling internationally, purchasing travel insurance is one of the easiest ways to make sure your trip is covered. If you end up with an injury or an illness while abroad, travel medical insurance ensures that you’re able to obtain the medical attention you need. This is important because Medicare has limited coverage if you’re traveling out of the United States.
  • Make sure you have enough medicine. For senior travelers who might need a few medications, make sure you have several days’ worth of all your important medications in your carry-on—not your checked luggage. If you put your medication in your checked bag and your flight is delayed—or worse, your luggage is lost—you’ll have to figure out how to access your medication in a new city. Avoid this stress and frustration by making sure you bring your medications in your carry-on.
  • Pack light. Depending on your physical abilities, pack light to save yourself any stress or worry. Prepare for the length of your trip, knowing that you can re-wear or even wash your clothing items if need be. If you’re worried about being able to lift your carry-on luggage into the overhead compartment, just ask your flight attendant or your seatmate for help.
  • Talk to your healthcare provider. Before you head off on your next great adventure, check in with your doctor and discuss any precautions you should take in advance. Depending on where you’re heading, your doctor might recommend that you come in for a brief check-up—or even obtain new shots to protect your health.
  • Ask for senior discounts! Some airlines offer reduced fares for seniors, some museums offer discounted entrance fees, and some hotels even have a special deal for seniors. Get into the habit of asking if there’s a discounted rate—some companies might not advertise it publicly.

What to Pack

Packing is, arguably, one of the least enjoyable parts of traveling. But with these tips and recommendations, you’ll feel better about getting your packing out of the way so you can enjoy your future trip.

  • For senior travelers, wheeled luggage is a gamechanger. Instead of dealing with backaches and tired shoulders, a wheeled suitcase makes traipsing through the airport a breeze.
  • If you’re going to be doing a lot of sightseeing or walking, consider a backpack or a tote bag to carry your maps, snacks, and water throughout your explorations.
  • Leave your expensive jewelry at home.
  • Roll your clothes in your suitcase instead of folding them. This helps save room and makes it easy to see all of your clothes at a glance.
  • Only bring a few pairs of shoes. They tend to be heavy and you often don’t need many pairs. Make sure to bring a comfy pair if you’re planning on being active on your vacation!
  • Depending on your location, bring rain gear—so you’re prepared for anything.
  • Don’t forget the right adapters! If you’re traveling overseas and need plug-in appliances or electronics, you might need a voltage converter.

Travel Benefits for Seniors Traveling Together

The beauty of retiring is the benefit of time. You can finally do all the things you never had time to do before. Many people decide to pick up new hobbies, renovate their homes, start a small business, and move to the country, or the popular choice, travel around the world!

Lots of seniors enjoy the flexibility of group touring and traveling. They like vacations that are budget-friendly and include loads of savvy limited-time specials.

Vacationing together can have a lot of positive impact on partner relationships. Especially when your bond is as strong as it is old. According to a prominent  senior dating service , co-op travel is at the top of the must-do list for people of retirement age, and here are some reasons why:

  • It Strengthens Your Relationship  – If you feel that old romance is dying, the best way to rekindle the flame is with a nice, long vacation someplace new.
  • It’s Safer to Travel Together  – Travelling alone is always a risk. You’re more prone to thieves, and if you’re doing secluded things like hijacking, it’s still best to have someone else watching your back.
  • You Learn Even More About Each Other:  No more unnecessary distractions. Now, it’s just you and your partner. Going to new travel destinations puts you in new situations and allows you to learn more about your partner, even if you’ve been with them for years.

Travel Vacation Ideas for Senior Couples

Some of the best travel destination ideas for seniors offer discounts on transportation, food, events, lodging, and attractions! These places offer calming sceneries, picturesque destinations, attractive monuments, and top it all off, more than enough things to do and sites to visit. With so many incentives at your fingertips, why sit at home? Want to head off to one of these budget-friendly destinations with your special someone? Try out any of these top travel picks for elderly couples;

Santa Fe (New Mexico)

New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico USA

Santa Fe New Mexico is one of the most beautiful and charming historic towns in the US.  If you and your partner are looking for a place where you can engage with new environments and new experiences, Santa Fe is the place for you. I

Enjoy their world-famous art and national monuments. And visit famous landmarks such as the Loretto Chapel, the Palace of Governors, and the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. You can also explore the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Sites of  Carlsbad Caverns  and Taos Pueblo.

It is that good. Don’t believe me? Ask Forbes magazine. They rated Santa Fe as a Top 14 US Travel Destination for 2019!

And if you’re more invested in group tourism, their Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado Santa Fe will keep you occupied with different fun activities. From yoga and hiking to horseback riding and meditation, many activities are just ideal for older adults.

The Canadian Rockies (Canada)

Canada - Banff

Get lost in the fantastic Rocky Mountains of Canada, as you explore the wildlife and scenery with your special someone. It promises a fun time for everyone. It promises you a blend of the fantastic view and fun outdoor activities you won’t be forgetting anytime soon.

If you’re looking for a simple, calm trip, feel free to try out their bike riding and hiking, or skiing(depending on the weather) to ensure you still get the best out of your stay. The Pacific Coast Highway (California)

USA - California - Pacific Coast Highway, Big Sur area, California

If you’re into traveling, you’ve come across California’s Pacific Coast Highway. However, if you’re relatively new to traveling, don’t worry, I’ll explain why it’s so great. California’s Pacific Coast Highway is a north-south state highway that moves along the majority of California’s Pacific coastline.

Famous for being part of the most scenic drives in the USA (if not the world), the drive takes you from the start of California’s northern border to Oregon with no stops. If you’re looking for a leisurely ride with your partner to rekindle the flames, then this is the travel destination for you.

Get ready to pass by some of America’s best landmarks, from the Art Colony of Caramel to the Big Sur Coast Byway. This travel pick is best for senior couples who aren’t looking for much stress or adventure, but simply a place to relax and enjoy themselves.

View of the Chain Bridge over the Danube River

Another fun and relaxing trip that would be lovely for senior couples are you and your partner visiting Central Europe’s Rivers together. It’s one of the most calming and beautiful experiences you will ever have, and personally, one of my favorites. Some of the beautiful rivers you will be graced with include the Danube River, the Rhine River, the Drave, the Mur, the Leitha, etc.

You can see the Danube by hopping from Vienna to Bratislava to Budapest on even on to Romania and Bulgaria, but why not join a river cruise and see these from a gorgeous stateroom?

Tips for Traveling as a Couple

Since you’re traveling with a person you’re very familiar with, and there’s no need to be tense or scared of anything. However, there are a few things you should take into consideration when traveling with your loved one;

  • Keep things familiar:  You want your partner to be as comfortable as can be. While you are looking forward to trying new things and being adventurous, don’t forget to maintain that shred of familiarity that keeps you guys sane.
  • Plan the length of the car ride:  Be sure to check up with your partner on how they want to travel and the amount of time they’ll feel comfortable traveling. And if it’s a surprise, try to randomly bring it up without telling them why you’re asking.
  • Be conscious of any sickness or allergies your partner has:  When planning a travel tour, consider every single factor. This includes any sickness or allergy, either you or your partner may have. Immaculate planning assures people that they are loved well-cared for-which leads to a happier trip.
  • Always have a backup plan:  A great way to prevent pointless anxiety or agitation or upset your partner is by always having a back plan if anything goes wrong. Whether it’s your transportation to residence issues, be prepared. You want this trip to be memorable for both of you.
  • Go Shopping Together: Bringing home a romantic souvenir from your trip is a great way to keep the memory alive once you’re back home!

In short, it all comes down to how well you plan your trip. Whatever happens, ensure that you and your special someone are happy and having the time of their life.

Time to Hit the Road!

Now that you know all the best spots to hit with your loved one, and how important it is to spend quality vacation time with them, what are you waiting for? Go out on tour and enjoy the best senior couple vacation you can have.

And of course, don’t forget your travel insurance! Travel insurance policies are important because accidents can happen at any time, and it is always best to be prepared and insured. Now that you have everything have the best vacation.

5 Things to Pack for Your Trip

Greece - Crete - Stephanie Luggage

A Lonely Planet   guidebook. It can be kind of a pain to find the major guidebooks once you land, or you’ll find them overpriced. I always like to pick mine up ahead of time.

Full-Sized Travel Towel  This is the best travel towel in the world. It’s pretty enough for the beach, large enough that you forget it’s a microfibre towel, and quick-drying, which is crucial if you’ll be headed to the beach or staying in a hostel.

A Go Pro   for underwater and action photography. These are great because you can get photos and videos of yourself in the shots. Also great because they’re so lightweight.

A Camera  since you want to remember your trip! I use a mix of my  Nikon D810  and my  Samsung8  smartphone these days.

Backup Charging Bank  for your cell phone since you’ll be using it as a camera, GPS, and general travel genie.

Don’t Forget About Travel Insurance!

Before you leave for your trip make sure you have a valid  Travel  Insurance Policy  because accidents happen on the road. I pay for  World Nomads,  and I happily recommend them. It’s especially important to get travel insurance when traveling abroad so loved ones back home can assist if you end up needing help. Make sure someone back home has your policy information!

I have been a paying customer of  World Nomads  for travel insurance for three years, and I happily recommend them.  If you get sick, injured, or have your stuff stolen, you’ll be happy to have the ability to pay for your medical bills or replace what’s stolen or broken.

Trips and Tours for Senior Couples

old couple travel guides

When you’re planning a romantic rendezvous with your special someone, you may want to avoid singles and families so you can truly enjoy time alone together. Most couples-only tours focus on younger honeymooners. Couples are more than welcome to join almost any tour group except singles-only tours, but it’s difficult to find tours reserved for mature couples.

Senior couples who are contemplating a romantic trip do have some options. Consider some of these getaway ideas, or use them to jump-start your trip planning.

All-Inclusive, Couples-Only Resorts

For many seniors, the appeal of a tour group includes the freedom to relax and leave the travel planning to someone else. All-inclusive resorts offer the same type of stress-free travel. With few exceptions, everything you need – lodging, food and daily activities – are covered. Couples-only resorts range from relaxing, romantic getaways to all-night, all-out partying. Chances are, you can find an all-inclusive resort that gives you the chance to rekindle romance, your way.

Bear Trail Couples Resort in Ontario, Canada, lies right next to Algonquin Park. This all-inclusive resort provides wilderness luxury to couples of all ages. You can sample the gourmet fare at the resort’s restaurant and enjoy an afternoon at the on-site spa. Borrow the resort’s fishing gear, kayaks, and canoes or rent a motorboat and venture out on the lake. You can also rent snowshoes, dog sleds, and trail horses in the winter; the dogs get the summer off.

If you’d rather stay indoors and enjoy your romantic cabin or suite, you can relax in front of the fireplace (firewood is provided) or soak in your jacuzzi tub. There’s wi-fi access, so you can send the grandchildren a photo or two – maybe you’ll get a great picture of a moose.

Couples-Only Hotels and Daytrips

If staying in one place doesn’t appeal to you, why not book a trip to a resort that offers day trips?

Sun Palace Cancun Resort could be your perfect romantic getaway destination. Not only do you have all the beachfront and poolside amenities you’d expect from a top-notch resort, you can also play golf or relax at the spa at nearby Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort, also operated by Palace Resorts.

When you feel adventurous, sign up for one of the Palace Resorts day tours. For example, you can visit Chichen Itza or see Mayan ruins at Tulum . Some vacation packages include tour fees.

Private or Small Group Tours

If a regular tour group isn’t romantic enough for you, create your own private tour experience. Private, customized tours, often called “boutique” tours, offer customized luxury travel.

La Dolce Vita Wine Tours can create a customized, private tour for you. Pat and Claudio will guide you through some of Italy’s most historic and prestigious wineries. Whether you prefer Tuscan hilltowns or the sophistication of Piedmont’s Barolo country, you can escape to romantic Italy in custom comfort.

10 Destinations Perfect For Older Couples Looking For An Adventure

old couple travel guides

T here’s a quote by David Bowie that goes, “Ageing is an extraordinary process where you become the person you always should have been.” In this case, the person you always should’ve been is a traveller.

Age is such a wonderful thing for travellers. Not only do you know exactly what it takes to create a happy relationship, but you also know exactly what types of experiences you do and don’t want out of your vacation. Here are 10 incredible destinations for older couples that’ll ignite your passion for exploring the world:

1. Alaska, USA

old couple travel guides

One of the most breath-taking wilderness destinations, Alaska has so much to offer to the adventure traveller. Beautiful landscapes, glorious wildlife, and spectacular glacier formations are just the tip of the iceberg of what the US’s largest state features. However, the state being so vast can become overwhelming when it comes to planning a trip.

Do: An Alaskan cruise

Cruises are a great choice for older couples because everything’s taken care of for you. Simply pay for your ticket, lay back in your ocean view cabin, and prepare to be pampered and spoiled. Alaska’s a wonderful cruise destination full of unforgettable sights. The Alaskan cruise season runs from April through to September. June until August are also the warmest months, albeit rainy. If you want to catch the Northern Lights, the best time to cruise is between mid-September to April, peaking in March.

2.  Quebec City, Canada

old couple travel guides

Strolling into Old Quebec can be likened to being transported into a European dream. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is full of charming shops and gorgeous sights. Explore the wine country, visit gothic cathedrals, and find delight in the abundance of French food. Those visiting in the winter will especially love Fairmont Le Château Frontenac and the ice hotel Hôtel de Glace .

Do: A gondola ride over Montmorency Falls

A whopping 30 metres higher than Niagara Falls, Montmorency Falls is THE sight to see at Parc de la Chute-Montmorency. There’s no better way to see it with a gondola/cable car ride over Montmorency River. At the top of the cliff, you can either opt to take the gondola back down or join a walking tour down through the park.

3.  Tokyo, Japan

old couple travel guides

One of the world’s busiest cities, bustling with neon signs and endless crowds of people, Tokyo is the perfect balance of tradition and modernity. You can be walking down the streets, admiring the city’s marvellous skyscrapers, and suddenly be greeted by lush green gardens and centuries-old temples.

Do: A traditional tea ceremony dressed in a yukata

A Japanese tea ceremony (sometimes called ‘the way of tea’ or chanoyu ) is a traditional ritual that’s been a part of Japanese culture since the 9 th century. The ceremony is beyond just serving and drinking tea, with the main purpose being for guests to enjoy the hospitality of a host in an atmosphere distinct from the fast pace of everyday life. It’s also an art of discipline. To enhance your tea ceremony experience, come dressed in a yukata (summer kimono).

As a solo woman traveller, few capital cities in the world are as ideal a destination:

10 tips for women travelling to tokyo, japan, 4. bangkok, thailand.

old couple travel guides

Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, is a beautiful city known for its vibrant streets and ornate shrines. Spend the day visiting the astonishing Wat Arun (a temple overlooking the Chao Phraya River), browsing the busy market stalls, or taking a romantic stroll or boat ride through the many urban parks and lakes.

Do: A food tour

Thai food is a definite highlight regardless of where you are in Thailand. Bangkok itself has a line-up of award-winning food and culture tours. If you want something romantic, try the Chao Phraya Princess Dinner Cruise . If you prefer being more adventurous and free-and-easy, plan your own food tour route based on suggestions you can find online.

old couple travel guides

The Amalfi Coast is a set of mountain towns embedded on a cliffside along the southern edge of Italy’s Sorrentine Peninsula. Praiano, Minori, Furore, Positano, Ravello, and Maiori are all towns accessible by driving the hairpin turns of the coastline, but for older couples, Amalfi is the best city to visit. It has an even landscape and views that won’t soon be forgotten.

Do: Take a sunset drive along the coast

What’s more romantic than driving off into the sunset with the person you’ve chosen to spend your life with? Depending on how much time you have and where you want to go, the Amalfi Coast has several routes to choose from, all equally beautiful. If you have some two hours to spare, take a drive from either Ostia Antica to Naples, or Salerno to Tivoli. Otherwise, take a 40-minute drive from Rome to Ostia Antica, or Sorrento to Positano.

7. Key West, Florida, USA

old couple travel guides

If you’re looking for an adventure stateside, Key West is a perfect choice. The island city’s a beautiful destination with amazing weather all year round. Go kayaking, dine at a seaside restaurant in Mallory Square and enjoy the sunset, visit Fort Zachary Taylor, or go for a picnic on the beach.

Do: Go dolphin and whale watching

Take your partner on an activity they’ll never forget – a dolphin cruise. Dolphin- and whale-watching tours allow you to explore the endlessly blue water and see majestic bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat.

8. Bali, Indonesia

old couple travel guides

If you and your partner want to deepen your happy relationship , Bali is the place to be. A dream destination for pretty much everyone we can think of, this island deserves a spot on your travel list. Known for its volcano-forested mountains, rice paddies, and stunning beaches, no matter what your interests are, Bali has it all.

Do: Visit the Bali Safari and Marine Park

You don’t have to travel all the way to Africa to experience a safari. As Bali’s largest wildlife theme park, the Bali Safari and Marine Park has no shortage of animals (the park is home to over 60 species) roaming freely in enclosures mimicking their natural habitats.

Bali deemed by many to be a slice of heaven on earth, here’s why:

10 tips for women travelling to bali, indonesia, 9. cancun, mexico.

old couple travel guides

More than a spring break destination, many who have visited the city say that the coastal city of Cancun has two faces. Apart from never-ending fiestas, the city’s also rich in Mayan culture and history. Visitors call it ‘The Mexican Carribean’ due to its long stretches of powdery white beaches and clear, swimmable waters.

Do: Get pampered at all-inclusive resort

If all it takes for you to be happy is to sit out in the sun, travel with your partner to an all-inclusive resort in sunny Cancun. Also known as mega resorts, all-inclusive resorts are a stress-free way of travelling, and Cancun has many of them. You don’t have to leave the resort because all you could possibly want and need for the duration of your stay is provided at the resort. If you do end up wanting a day out, transportation, activities, and dining are often included in these holidays.

10. Kathmandu, Nepal

old couple travel guides

Kathmandu is a great location for first-time visitors to Nepal. It has a myriad temples, monasteries, and shrines that are jaw-droppingly beautiful. Seep yourself in medieval history and explore the Kathmandu Valley’s other ancient kingdoms of Bhaktapur and Patan, or take a food tour of the city.

Do: A historical tour of the city

If you and your partner are history and architecture buffs, and love discovering a place from inside out, Kathmandu is the right destination for you. Learn about Kathmandu’s heritage, speak to locals and learn about the culture, and marvel at decades-old shrines and temples that peppered throughout city. It’s not nicknamed the ‘City of Temples’ for nothing!

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Vacation Destination for Older Couples

elder couples

Accessibility and ease of travel

These two are major considerations for seniors who are dealing with mobility challenges. It can be tough walking long distances, especially when traveling overseas. Accessible infrastructure including ramps, elevators, and well-maintained pathways can greatly enhance their ability to explore a destination.

Climate and weather conditions

Seniors are more sensitive to extreme temperatures compared to younger individuals. High temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke and may aggravate pre-existing health conditions.

Cold temperatures pose risks of hypothermia or exacerbate conditions like arthritis. So choose destinations with good weather conditions. Or travel during off season when the temperature is milder.

Humidity levels and poor air quality affect respiratory health, particularly for those with asthma or other chronic pulmonary diseases. High humidity makes breathing a bit challenging.

Safety and Security

Police woman

Travelers are concerned about political stability and crime rates. Politically stable destinations have better chances of getting picked.

Senior citizens are cautious about potential scams, pickpocketing, or other forms of exploitation. Destinations with established policies for tourist protection and scam prevention are more likely to be favored.

Places with well-lit streets, visible security personnel, surveillance cameras, and emergency response teams tend to gain more trust from residents and tourists alike.

Accommodation options and amenities

Window bed

What seniors look for accommodations? Preferably those equipped with elevators, ramps, accessible rooms, grab bars in bathrooms, and wheelchair-friendly facilities.

Lodgings need to be near tourist sites, restaurants, shopping centers, and medical facilities to make it more convenient for seniors to access the amenities they need during the trip.

They should have on-site amenities and services like fitness centers, swimming pools, spa facilities, and concierge services.

Activities and attractions suited for older couples

Symphony orchestra

Older couples prefer a more relaxed and leisurely pace while traveling. Travel insurance is of utmost importance because it gives them peace, knowing they’re covered.

Vacation ideas for older individuals should be something that provides insights, educational value, and a sense of connection with the past.

Budget-friendly options

savings

Travelers nearing retirement age, or those who are already retired, get by on a fixed income or pension. Opting for budget-friendly travel destinations is a practical choice that ensures they can afford necessary expenses without compromising their finances.

Seniors are more flexible with their time and can plan longer trips. Cheaper travel destinations potentially allow them to extend their stay or visit multiple locations.

Destinations for older couples with affordable healthcare facilities and services ensure that seniors can have access to medical attention when they need it.

Budget-friendly destinations allow them to enjoy their trip with less stress and anxiety, knowing they can comfortably cover their expenses like travel insurance, etc., without overspending or worrying about their financial situation.

Best Vacation Spots for Senior Couples

Key west, florida.

wooden boardwalk along Key West beach

Key West is one of the nicest destinations for older couples seeking a relaxing trip. Its clear waters, local culture, and history make it an expensive vacation. The high demand for lodging and accommodations, and the limited availability can occasionally drive up prices.

Key West offers some of the best opportunities for outdoor adventure . It’s a prime destination for snorkeling, diving, sailing, and other water sports. It’s the crown jewel of places known for its pleasant climate, vibrant nightlife, historic sites, and pastel-colored conch-style architecture.

It’s home to the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, the Harry S. Truman Little White House, and the Key West Lighthouse. The island also has live music venues. It also provides plenty of fun outdoor activities such as fishing, snorkeling, boating, and golfing.

Understanding naturist travel and its benefits

Naturist travel offers a liberating experience for individuals seeking body acceptance, relaxation, and a deeper connection with nature. By embracing nudity in a respectful and inclusive manner, naturist travelers enjoy the benefits of this alternative way of having fun.

Going bare naked is a lifestyle choice where participation in naturist venues is voluntary. These venues implement specific guidelines to ensure the participants are safe and their personal boundaries and consent are respected.

Benefits of naturist travel for older couples

old couple travel guides

•Encourages individuals to embrace their bodies and accept themselves as they are, regardless of age, shape, or size. Being naked in a non-judgmental environment helps foster self-confidence and promotes a positive body image.

•Naturist venues (beaches, resorts, or campgrounds) offer a peaceful escape from the demands of everyday life. The sun, breeze, or water against the skin without restrictive clothing enhances sensory experiences and promotes a sense of liberation and tranquility.

•Without the barriers of clothing, travelers experience nature more intimately, feeling the elements directly on their skin. This connection with nature fosters a greater appreciation for the natural world and encourages travelers to become responsible stewards of the environment.

•Nude vacations for older couples provide opportunities to connect with like-minded people who share similar values. These supportive and inclusive communities create a sense of belongingness.

•Exposure to sunlight promotes the production of vitamin D, which is essential for bone health and overall well-being. Being clothes-free allows the skin to breathe and prevents overheating or discomfort.

The Best Trips to Take in Your 60s

From a train journey through the Canadian Rockies to a tour of the pyramids in Egypt, these are the top vacations for seniors over 60.

old couple travel guides

David Raymer/Getty Images

With 61 being the average age of retirement in the U.S. , your seventh decade might just be the time to explore the places you've always dreamed of but could never visit. Sure, health and financial situations vary greatly and can create limitations when it comes to traveling, but there are still plenty of getaways to suit just about any physical ability or budget.

It's time to start ticking off some of those bucket list items, whether that means booking a beach destination for some rest and relaxation or embarking on the adventure of a lifetime in a faraway place (an African safari, you say?).

From cruises to train trips to glamping experiences, here are the best trips for travelers over 60.

A River Cruise

For first-time cruisers, a river cruise is a safe starting point. Rivers such as the Danube (Central and Southeastern Europe), the Rhine (starting in the Swiss Alps), and the Seine (in northern France) are popular because they flow right through picturesque and historic cities, allowing for a variety of shore excursions.

But you don't have to go abroad to sail along a scenic river. In the U.S., the Mississippi — flowing from northern Minnesota all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico — is a popular option, with three main cruise lines operating both contemporary boats and old-style paddle wheelers. Less trodden but equally charming are the Columbia and Snake Rivers in the Pacific Northwest, and even the Hudson River in New York.

A Journey Across the Sea

Veritable seaborne cities, some of the largest cruise ships are equipped with restaurants, theaters, pools, and casinos to keep guests entertained and comfortable while sailing the ocean blue. The itinerary options are near infinite, with some lines circumnavigating the Mediterranean and others embarking on maritime journeys in the North Atlantic, South Pacific, Asia, and beyond. We recommend booking with Holland America, Cunard, or Royal Caribbean for big-ship cruising in optimal comfort. And if you've always imagined making a classic transatlantic crossing and have the time, you might check off a bucket list item with a week on the famed Queen Mary 2 .

A Cruise Aboard a Midsize Ship

Midsize cruise ships that carry between 250 and 600 passengers offer many of the same amenities that large ships offer, but they can also stop at ports that can't accommodate colossal vessels–the towns and villages on Alaskan Dream Cruises' trip through the Inside Passage , for example . Also check out Paul Gauguin Cruises ' South Pacific itineraries and Windstar's trips in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean — both options available to just a few hundred passengers at a time.

A Ride on the Orient Express

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express , a rolling homage to perhaps the most famous rail service in history, carries passengers aboard luxuriously restored 1920s carriages across Europe — and across time. The Classic Route , which runs between Paris and Venice , takes passengers through picturesque European cities, towns, and farmlands in the comfort of private cabins or grand suites, with elegant dining and bar cars to enjoy along the way. Make the journey even more fun and dress to impress on this nostalgic (and iconic) train ride.

An All-American Train Trip

The California Zephyr , an Amtrak train that travels from Chicago to the Bay Area , passes through some of the most incredible natural scenery in the western United States, including the Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains, and the Sierra Nevada. As a bonus, it's a decidedly convenient way to cross the country, especially for those with time to spare and a preference not to fly.

Almost an equal distance but traveling a more northern route is the Empire Builder , also by Amtrak. It connects Seattle and Chicago, winding through the Rockies and along parts of the famous Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. For longer trips like these (40-plus hours), make sure to book a bedroom or roomette for comfort.

Looking for something shorter? The 35-hour Coast Starlight route traverses the West Coast between Los Angeles and Seattle, offering spectacular views of the Pacific shoreline, ancient redwood forests, and snow-capped mountains, all best seen from the Sightseer Lounge car.

The Canadian Rockies by Rail

If it's majestic mountains, icy-blue waters, dramatic canyons, and miles upon miles of evergreen forest you're keen to see, the revered Rocky Mountaineer is your ticket. There are four itineraries to choose from, but the most popular one is the First Passage to the West, traveling from Vancouver to Banff and Lake Louise (and vice versa). Passengers can admire the surroundings from the comfort of glass-topped observation cars or soak in the fresh mountain air from outdoor viewing platforms.

The Galápagos

Since this archipelago is off the coast of Ecuador, you'll need to travel to either Quito or Guayaquil to start your journey. Small ships or yachts are ideal for getting close to nature, and with most you can kayak, snorkel, or dive when not simply observing the resident iguanas, giant tortoises, penguins, sea lions, and numerous bird species from the comfort of the deck. The vessels are great for day trips, but you can also opt for a live-aboard experience or a stay at one of the hotels on one of the few inhabited islands. In any case, planning well ahead of your trip to the Galápagos is important because of limitations on the number of visitors.

An African Safari

For many, an African safari is the ultimate vacation and the first great adventure considered after retirement. Planning one, however, can be overwhelming with the number of options, from which tour company to book to how much to spend to where to stay. Accommodations range from luxurious glamping sites to rustic lodges and tent camps — all perfectly comfortable for the over-60 set. Special interests such as seeing the Big Five, spotting certain birds, or cultural experiences should be considered as well. Small group hikes or jeep rides are good options for an intimate experience. Research and planning are key in creating your perfect safari vacation.

A Northern Lights Escape

Many people hope to see the aurora borealis in their lifetimes, but the northern lights are notoriously elusive. Their appearance is spectacular but unpredictable, influenced by weather, the time of year, and solar activity. There are many great destinations for seeing the Northern Lights : Guided tours in Alaska, northern Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Finland accommodate seekers of greatest nature's light show. Lodging options range from glass igloos to cozy cabins. When choosing a tour, try to book one that offers a return trip if your pursuit of polar lights proves unsuccessful.

Egypt and the Pyramids

Who isn't fascinated by the Great Sphinx of Giza, the pyramids, and the stories of King Tutankhamun and the tombs of the pharaohs? Near Cairo , home of the artifact-packed Egyptian Museum , visitors can explore the Great Pyramid of Giza and several smaller pyramids. In Luxor, a one-hour flight away, visitors can visit Karnak, a complex of ancient temples, statues, and obelisks, as well as Luxor Temple, dating back to around 1450 B.C.E. Top the trip off with a boat excursion on the Nile for the full experience.

The Belmond Hiram Bingham

Another luxury ride to a destination on many travelers' bucket lists, Hiram Bingham, a Belmond Train , takes passengers from Cuzco, Peru, to nearby Machu Picchu . The train, featuring Pullman-style carriages decked out with upholstered armchairs and varnished wood and brass, is named after the American archaeologist, explorer, and writer who revealed Machu Picchu to much of the world in 1911.

A Staycation

Don't forget that it's never too late to become a tourist in your own backyard. Staycations are an easy and convenient way to scratch the travel itch without going too far out of your comfort zone.

Stay in a downtown hotel or a tucked-away Airbnb. Find a new restaurant, museum, or neighborhood you've yet to visit. You're bound to discover some fresh pleasures and maybe even a new hobby close to home. Do it on your own schedule, working around crowded days and using those off-peak senior discounts to your advantage.

Why travel in your 80s?

Simple answer? Why not! Many octogenarians speak of the sense of freedom they experience in their eighth or ninth decade. It might be the freedom of more spare time, or freedom from caring about the expectations of other people.

But of course, there are logistical issues to consider. Your mobility might not be what it used to be, and it can be nice to feel supported in the far-flung destinations you choose to visit. This is why a small group tour can be ideal. You get to share your experiences and reactions with like minded people. You can feel confident with the expertise of your group leader and guides. And you will be a valuable part of a small group with our capped participant numbers: at Odyssey Traveller, our tours average eight participants. Below are 16 tips on travel in your 70s, 80s and beyond!

Walking

1. Be honest with your travel provider, and yourself.

At Odyssey Traveller, our number one priority is that you have an enriching and enjoyable experience. In order to make this happen, it’s important we understand you and your individual needs. For travel at any age, an honest relationship with your travel provider is important. Sharing with them your hopes and limitations will help them to tailor your holiday to your needs. For those fascinated by the industrial revolution, Britain’s History through its Canals and Railways could be the perfect fit! Or perhaps you are drawn to the arts: consider the Gilbert and Sullivan Festival small group tour to explore their beguiling operas. Or, for the adventurous, perhaps the pyramids of Egypt is on your bucket list? Talk to us about your own bucket list today!

2. Older travellers must pace themselves!

Your enthusiasm for travel may not have dampened, but, of course, some accommodations must be made! Our tour leaders are approachable and understanding. Wherever possible, you are welcome to opt out of an activity, or perhaps spend a day at leisure close to the hotel. We recommend you familiarise yourself with the full itinerary of your tour. This way you can anticipate the energy stores you will need to get yourself through. Rest up in your evenings and take care of yourself (and each other) each day of the tour. This begins from the moment you leave home for the airport.

3. Work with the airline about your needs, and have an active flight!

old couple travel guides

A significant part of your overseas journey will be the flight itself. Be open with the airline about your needs. Detail your mobility and mention any aides you will need to pack with you. On the flight itself, it’s best to avoid alcohol and sleeping pills. Instead, commit to move as much as you can. Drink plenty of water and undertake regular leg exercises. Qantas has provided a great guide to healthy flying here .

An aisle seat is a great option because it enables you to walk up and down the aisles and stretch your legs. If you are at risk of deep vein thrombosis or DVT , consider wearing compression socks. Your GP can help you to arrange this. More travel tips especially for seniors can be found here .

4. Assessing and maintaining your health

Before setting off on your next adventure, it’s important to check you are in good health. We want your travel experience to run as smoothly as possible. It can be helpful to understand and anticipate potential health issues, and know how to manage them so they have minimal impact on your participation in your tour. Remember, age doesn’t have to be a barrier if you are fit and healthy! Know your abilities, as well as your limitations. And take them seriously.

5. Check with your GP or relevant specialists

We recommend that senior travellers make an appointment with their GP or relevant specialists while planning their trip. Tell them your intentions and ask for their honest opinions on your capacity to get the most out of your tour. Ask them for recommendations on how to safely improve your fitness. It’s also a good idea to pay another visit just prior to your departure. They can check you are in good health and have all the medications and first aid you need to pack with you. Don’t forget to enquire about vaccinations, too.

6. Visit your dentist

Make sure you are up to date with your dental appointments. The last thing you want is a toothache to impact your time away.

7. Think about your diet.

An enjoyable part of small group tours is the anticipation and preparation. Now is the time to try to achieve the best level of readiness you can. Be mindful of how you are treating yourself in the lead up. Eat well. You might also like to familiarise yourself with the cuisine of your chosen destination! This is a fun way to prepare.

8. Improving your fitness

Travel in your 80s

A reasonable level of fitness will mean that you can participate in more, and feel less tired. Under the advice of your health professional, work on how you can improve your fitness. This may be as simple as taking walks instead of driving, or getting out and playing with the dog. Ask your friends about their fitness routines. Your upcoming trip might be the perfect motivation to form a neighbourhood walking group or join a class at the local gym or community centre.

9. Our fitness level indicators for older travellers

All of our tours feature an Activity Level. The description of these is available here . Your job, in concert with your health and fitness providers, is to assess your fitness level so you can be sure the tour is well suited to you. Even though Odyssey Traveller offers flexibility, and you can opt out of activities wherever possible, for your own enjoyment and a feeling of being part of the group, its best to be on the safe side. Better to underestimate your fitness than overestimate it. Just try to become the healthiest version of yourself that you can. Here are all of our level 1 tours – these are classed as introductory and include our summer schools. Level 2 tours can be found here . Our tours range all the way to level 5 so do check the classification of the tour you are interested in.

10. Use of a walker and other mobility aides.

Travel in your 80s

Another thing to bear in mind is the use of walkers and other physical aids. You are, of course, welcome to bring these along, but its essential you let your travel company know in advance. You will also need to inform the airline and speak with them about accessibility. Some of Odyssey Traveller’s tours cover uneven terrain. This is often detailed in the Activity Level. If you are concerned, get in touch with your travel provider for a chat. We are always happy to speak to future travellers.

11. Courtesy to your group members

One of the very best parts of a small group tour is the people you meet and the friendships you form. At Odyssey Traveller, you will be travelling with like minded individuals and couples aged in their 50s and over. Of course, group travel also means that each member impacts on the others. In a way, you are working as a team. It’s important to be honest about your abilities because you don’t want to hold others back. Although you are welcome to sit out particular activities, tour members want to share experiences as a group. This is why it’s important to talk to your travel provider while planning your tour.

12. A companion may be ideal

Seniors Travel

It can be helpful to travel with a companion, especially if you have mobility issues. It can assist you to feel supported, and we’re sure your companion will enjoy themselves too! Having a companion might mean that you can participate that little bit more. So consider whether you have a partner or friend who is interested in small group, educational travel, too. Alternatively, if you are a solo traveller, you might like to read this article for further advice .

13. Travel insurance for seniors is available

Travel insurance for seniors is a must for any overseas holiday. Many insurance companies have experience with travellers aged over 80. Speak to your travel provider or a trusted agent about your options. This is for the sake of your own peace of mind. Odyssey Travellers can assist with independent advice. A key product many mature and senior travellers are purchasing is cancellation insurance for up to a year out from departure. Some travel insurers for seniors offer cancellation insurance as part of their standard package.

14. Consider your destination and do some research

Gizmos Gadgets and Apps for Senior Travellers

Okay, so your next steps? Number one, of course, is to consult your bucket list. Where are the places you have been dreaming of visiting for as long as you can remember? Or the far-flung destinations that hold memories for you? Perhaps you are looking to revisit sentimental cities. Or you might want to learn more about a culture that interests you. Once you have identified the places you wish to visit, start researching! Head to the library, search the internet. Track down people you know who have visited. Check out the reading lists we recommend for each of our tours. And then, with some knowledge, think about how you can make your dream a reality. Perhaps the walking tour of France isn’t possible, but the Senior Travellers guided educational small group rural tour of France might be just perfect for you.

15. Record your memories

This is so important! Come home and share your stories with your friends and family. Inspire others around you to be as adventurous and inquisitive as you are, and to know that octogenarians are valuable contributors to our world.

The Best Luxury Spots for Mature Couples

Traveling can be one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences for romantic partners, but it is especially great for older couples. Not only do you have the time to travel and enjoy yourself, but you get more benefits from traveling than younger people. As they say, you only live once, and we’re going to show you some of the best places to travel when you’re trying to live in the lap of luxury for a little while!

Why a couple traveling is a great idea at any age?

Before we get to the destinations, you have to ask: why should senior couples travel in the first place? There are several reasons that older people should take time to travel with one another. For example, they can spend some of their time with each other now that they have finished their work and raised their families. Now that they are too caught up with maintaining their lives, it’s nice to step away and get a little excitement. Every person can use a little more adventure in their lives. And if you’re going to travel, you might as well go to some of the most luxurious places on the planet. Another reason to travel is to put some miles on your soul to match those that you’ve put on your body. The world is a great big place, and you have to take some time to explore it and make sure that you see enough of it.

Couples should also travel to solidify their relationship and get to know each other better. You’ve changed during the long years you’ve been together, or you might have gotten together later in life. Learn about their perspective on life again!

Our Bucket Runneth Over

It’s a funny thing about bucket lists. The theory is that you cross items off until it’s empty and the end is near. Maybe you’re like us and your bucket list never gets shorter. You watch sunrise at Angkor Wat with the monks and then Iceland or Alaska pop up to lure you with the Northern Lights. You check off midnight in the Moroccan Sahara , and suddenly a new need to swim with sea lions in the Galapagos rushes in to fill the vacuum. Or maybe you just want to walk footpaths with iconic names like The Inca Trail in Peru or The Path of the Gods along the Amalfi Coast .

The World is Your Onion

Is there anything more fun than peeling back the layers of a place you visit on vacation? While tourists skim their way from A to B, you like to get under the skin of a culture to truly understand what it’s all about. One of the best ways to unwrap a destination is to really get out into the environment and enjoy it. That might be on one of our multisport trips with a variety of activities offered during the week or ending the day on one of our walking tours with a soak in thermal waterfalls heated by a nearby volcano.

Kynance Cove, the Lizard peninsula, Cornwall, England, UK

The classic travel guidebooks that inspire my trips

From the iconic Shell Guides to Wilkie Collins’s rambles, travel writers pick the vintage UK guides that keep them exploring

‘A rollicking account of a walking tour around Cornwall in 1850 … to “the savage regions beyond” Plymouth’

Rambles Beyond Railways by Wilkie Collins

Cover of Rambles beyond Railways by Wilkie Collins

It was not only intended to be used as a guidebook, but Wilkie Collins’s Rambles Beyond Railways (1851) is written with the kind of precision you’ll find in any of the later Shell or Blue guides. It’s a rollicking account of a walking tour he took around Cornwall in August 1850, aged 26, when he travelled to ‘the savage regions beyond’ Plymouth, where the railways had not yet reached (although they were only just behind him).

He was rowed from Devonport to St Germans by an expansively inebriated shrimper, and he hiked from village to town, along the coast, strolling along the tops of the thick stone walls (as we still can), dining on pies, cream and lobsters, trying to find Cornish speakers, looking for ghosts, becoming almost indecently excited about the prospect of Land’s End (which he then couldn’t find without a guide). We don’t have that problem today, what with the car park and hyperactive gift shops, but much of the rest of Rambles is as fresh and informative as it ever was.

I have wriggled through the same caves at Kynance Cove, followed Wilkie to Tintagel and Helston (‘the dullest of towns’, he sniffed), stood on the Cheesewring (where the view, if you squint out the pylons, is just as he described) and caressed the same standing stones. He even sniggers at the “fly blown mock jewellery” and “dusty nuts” in a shopfront in Looe, launching 150 years of seaside innuendo. You can skip some of his waffle about Cornish theatre in the later stretches of the book; but his descriptions of his visit down a tin mine and especially the wild night-time haul of pilchards at St Ives, where the entire town turned out to bring in the fish, are exhilarating.

The people of Cornwall will always prosper, he wrote, thanks to the “inexhaustible mineral treasures in the earth, and the equally inexhaustible shoals of pilchards which annually visit the coast”.

He can be careless with his research (but who wouldn’t want to read what Wilkie Collins has to say about druids?), and he seems to have become bored with the book by the end, but Rambles still holds its own as a guide. It’s even topical. When Wilkie reached Lizard, he found a doctor down from London holding a smallpox party at the inn (now the Witchball), inoculating local babies with “a lot of fine fresh matter”. Wilkie scuttled out, and headed for the coast, where the air, he sighed, was “better than laudanum”. He ended his journey at Forrabury church with a ghost story, before heading back to London on the train, and so “our pleasant days of strolling travel are ended”. ‘Hutton was gloriously opinionated. He thought Stonehenge “sterile” … entire valleys displeased him’

Highways and Byways in Wiltshire by Edward Hutton

Cottages, Lacock village, Wiltshire, UK

Years ago I came across a faded little volume in a secondhand bookshop near Salisbury: Highways and Byways in Wiltshire by Edward Hutton, published during the first world war. Inside its pages a world opened before me: little lanes, silent villages, rivers that meandered through unspoilt landscapes of willow and elm.

Hutton was also gloriously opinionated. An upper middle-class Edwardian gentleman, his writing was often snobbish. He praised Salisbury fulsomely, but disliked its ruined predecessor, Old Sarum , dismissing it as “all these dead stones”. He thought Stonehenge “sterile” and called Wilton’s breathtaking Italianate church “a horrible building”. Entire valleys displeased him.

Nevertheless, he found much to marvel at. He could be elegiac or rhapsodic, and what he liked, he loved – the Wylye valley , Old Swindon Town, Lacock . He was fascinated by Avebury . Mostly, I didn’t believe this portrait of a bucolic English county, untouched by modernity. For all that, I loved the book, and Hutton’s trenchant opinions.

The Wiltshire volume introduced me to the Highways and Byways series, exploiting a new middle-class market, liberated by railways and bicycles. First appearing at the end of the 19th century, each book also had a map and sketches by well-known artists. The publishers, Macmillan, focused on holiday hotspots: Hardy’s Wessex, Shakespeare country and, exotically, Normandy.

Highways and Byways in Wiltshire by Edward Hutton

That chance encounter was the start of an oddball literary journey; I snapped up each new volume I found. They weren’t guidebooks in the modern sense; subject to the authors’ whims, sometimes they omitted huge chunks of their counties – the author of the Hampshire book left out almost all the New Forest and the Isle of Wight “for reasons of space”, although the book is more than 400 pages long. Elsewhere, the authors allowed themselves flights of fancy. In the Dorset book, Sir Frederick Treves (surgeon to Edward VII and author of The Elephant Man) imagined an iron-age couple tramping over swampy land. The books weren’t practical, but their idiosyncrasies were liberating.

I took them on journeys, packed into bike panniers. I visited Weymouth (“incommoded by its exceptional popularity”); to what was once Heath Row, now buried beneath the airport (“The flat country hereabouts … is mainly stretches of market gardens and cornfields”) and Covent Garden (“Disappointed hopes, shattered ambitions, tragic suicides”). I explored the imported ruins of Leptis Magna at Virginia Water in Surrey (“northern rains and northern ivy have done their work”) and discovered a forlorn monument to the importance of Brentford in history, sited near the Thames when the Middlesex book was published, since transplanted to a busy roadside. Tales of smugglers from Devon and Cornwall enlivened a walk from Seaton to Beer. I’m grateful for my lucky find and the complicated vision of England as it would have appeared to a certain sort of traveller a century ago. Jon Woolcott works for Little Toller Books. ‘Pen-and-ink sketches make this little book a here-be-dragons treasure map’

The Harcamlow Way (1980) and other guides to Essex and Hertfordshire by Fred Matthews and Harry Bitten

Round-towered St Mary’s church, Bartlow. England, UK.

It began with a line on a map. Ten years ago, I moved to the border between Hertfordshire and Essex and began to explore the local footpaths. One long-distance route, marked by green diamonds on the Ordnance Survey map, was labelled Harcamlow Way – a 140-mile walk, looping from Harlow to Cambridge and back in a huge figure of eight.

Cover of the guidebook The Harcamlow Way

The Harcamlow was one of many inventive collaborations between Fred Matthews, secretary of the West Essex Ramblers group, and his fellow rambler Harry Bitten. They published a guidebook, The Harcamlow Way , in 1980, now long out of print. I bought the only copy I could find online for £23.90 – quite steep for a battered, 50-page booklet. But this first edition walking guide helped unlock local landscapes for me, with their ancient tracks and tumuli, bluebell woods and fields of poppies.

Bitten’s pen-and-ink sketches of a church spire or thatched cottage in the corner of his hand-drawn maps are part of what makes this little book a here-be-dragons treasure map. Warnings in capital letters suggest the hazards of research: “(BE VERY CAREFUL. THE RIVER STORT IS ON THE FAR SIDE OF THE BANK. DO NOT RUN!)”

Matthews died in 2009 and Bitten in 2017, but a legacy of green diamonds across several OS maps invites walkers to follow in their energetic footsteps. In the decade before the Harcamlow, they devised the Three Forests Way , a circular route that links Hatfield, Hainault and Epping Forests, and St Peter’s Way , from Chipping Ongar to the Essex coast. I followed both these walks, finding prehistoric earthworks under bronzed beech trees, or the seventh-century chapel of St Peter-on-the-Wall , overlooking marshes and wild shell beaches.

In 1984 they published a guide to the Essex Way , an 82-mile trek across the county from Epping to Harwich. I walked that too. The most memorable part was approaching the wide Stour estuary with the high tide and reeds glowing gold in the setting sun. The adventures these two fellow walkers inspired have brought me more than weekend fun. My own, slightly quixotic project to publish updated guides to the Harcamlow Way was an unexpected milestone in my career as a travel writer. It led to further guidebooks and regular work for magazines, driven by a Bagginsesque curiosity about what’s outside the door.

In their characteristically understated introduction to the original Harcamlow Way guide, Matthews and Bitten describe the route starting and finishing beside the River Stort, which is less than a mile from my house. The walk goes on, they write, “over a number of low hills and through wooded valleys” to discover “a land of views, flowers and birdsong”. They recommend taking the time to wander around villages along the way and mention several interesting relics for “railway enthusiasts”. Highlights for me include wall paintings in some of the old churches: a dancing devil in Kingston, near Cambridge, and fragments of St George in round-towered St Mary’s, Bartlow , where only the dragon remains. The gentle preface ends by wishing readers “happy walking and fine weather”. Phoebe Taplin, author of 11 guidebooks, including two on the Harcamlow Way

‘It has a determination to winkle out forgotten corners that I love’

Buildings of England: York and the East Riding by Nikolaus Pevsner

Micklegate, York, UK, on a blue-sky day; a car drives through the gate.

Scanning my shelves of travel books and guides, I notice the gaps: the books that went travelling with me, but never returned. Geoff Crowther’s Africa on a Shoestring, the first one I ever bought. Without that book, Sudan might never have happened for me, certainly not Darfur and Zaire. Sadly, Geoff died recently : I hope he knew how many vivid experiences he had enabled.

Cover of The buildings of England: Yorkshire, York and the East Riding guidebook by Nikolaus Pevsner.

Other books barely survived their journeys, spines broken, pages missing and covers battered: the Moon Guide to Indonesia, for example, the classic product of a generation of hippy travel guide writers who knew how to weave magic with practicality. But for me it’s often the book that is not a direct travel guide that somehow inspires.

The Buildings of England series (part of the Pevsner Architectural Guides ) has an air of nostalgia for ancient traditions and a determination to winkle out forgotten corners that I love. Written by Nikolaus Pevsner, a wartime German refugee and anglophile, the first volume was published in 1951 (followed by 45 others, all still in print) and set the standard for architectural merit in heritage buildings.

I first came across the books when I was giving a talk on travel writing in a building just off Micklegate in York. I wanted some information on that street because I’d decided, during the interval, to suggest a walking rediscovery of what were familiar surroundings to everyone present. Pevsner came up trumps: Micklegate “is without any doubt the most rewarding street in York” it begins, going on to detail the historic architectural features and dates of every significant building.

The language is precise and unemotional, yet it succeeds. I walked York with new eyes, carrying it with me, finding gems like Lady Peckitt’s Yard behind the house of Sir Thomas Herbert in Pavement. Pevsner never digresses so does not mention that Herbert stood on the gallows with Charles I, but once I had the name I chased that up elsewhere.

Once I was into the book, other gems came up and prompted trips. I noticed a reference to the village of Rudston that I had driven through many times on my way to the Yorkshire coast. “In the churchyard,” I read, “the largest standing stone in Britain, 25 and a half feet high and 6 feet wide.” I have since sat under that stone many times, wondering how neolithic humans moved it. Sometimes the descriptions just demand a visit: the Jacobean house at Burton Agnes in East Yorkshire is described as possessing, “the most crazily overcrowded chimneypiece of all England”. I just had to go , discovering a treasure with wonderful interiors and gardens. It’s this enduring power of Pevsner to inspire trips, I believe, that has allowed it, somewhat improbably, to survive. ‘ It became the inspiration for cycle rides exploring the beautiful, almost secret Kent villages to the south of Canterbury’

The Shell Guide to Kent by Pennethorne Hughes

The village and Church of Postling, Kent. A notable view from the North Downs Way and Folkestone Downs.

Opening a new London travel bookshop, Daunt Books, in Marylebone in 1990, a set of Shell County Guides were necessarily among the first books to be shelved. Originally conceived and edited by John Betjeman and a coterie of his writer and artist friends in the 1930s, these handsome glovebox guides would reveal a Britain beyond the castles and stately homes. Long out of print, they remain iconic, loved for their wonderful black-and-white photography and their often waspish humour, but most of all for opening up a lesser-known countryside of follies and quiet villages with forgotten histories.

The Shell Guide to Kent by Pennethorne Hughes

On quieter days I would browse the Kent Shell guide, by Pennethorne Hughes. It follows Betjeman’s format of introductory essay and accompanying gazetteer, and it quickly became the inspiration for weekend cycle rides exploring the beautiful, almost secret villages to the south of my then home in Canterbury, and especially the stunning Elham valley. I’ve never forgotten that first Shell-inspired trip made one clear summer day 20 years ago.

Riding south through busy Bridge, with its “cheerful dignity”, I followed the quiet lane that follows the Nailbourne stream, to Bishopsbourne. From the guide I learned that Joseph Conrad had lived in two villages in the area, and planned the route to take in both. Bishopsbourne – where Conrad died at his house, Oswalds – was still as Hughes described: “an enchanting place, green and peaceful” and blessed by a fine pub.

From here beautiful rolling hills led me on through pleasant Barham to the valley’s crowning glory – Elham. Hughes is a mite sniffy – “it remains an attractive village in spite of new buildings” – but that day Elham appeared the perfect Kentish village with its charming square and church tucked below the downland. If Hughes’ comment suggests snobbishness to a modern reader, it’s also true that the language of the guides is always deliberately plain and accessible – no architectural glossary required here.

A mile or so further on in Lyminge, Hughes diverted me to the pretty church on the site of a seventh-century abbey dedicated to St Ethelburga. I then headed south-east to Postling, a pretty hamlet where Conradlived in a gorgeous house by Pent Farm and was visited, Hughes tells us, by Shaw, Wells and Henry James. Then it was time to toil up and over the ridge of the downs with fine views of Romney Marsh and across to Dungenness.

Fine country roads through Hastingleigh and the charming villages of Petham and Waltham completed a memorable day that bore ample testament to Hughes’s words “To know one parish in detail is perhaps the work of a lifetime: to know a whole county is impossible. But in Kent it is fun to try.”

Twenty years on, and thanks to his excellent guide, I’m still having fun. Brett Wolstencroft, manager of Daunt Books , Marylebone, London

8 Best Things to do in Olden Norway from the Cruise Ship Port

By: Author coupletraveltheworld

Categories Europe , Norway , Travel Blog Post

Looking for things to do in Olden Norway from a cruise ship? You have come to the right place.

We visited Olden Norway on the Norwegian Star cruise and found it to be an absolutely lovely little town.

Directly off the ship, there is not a real lot to do – just a few cafes, tourist shops and a supermarket is in direct walking distance (it is not a big town to explore) but there are a few really good things not to far from Olden Norway and your cruise ship if you know where to look.

Here is our top tips of the best activities in Olden Norway when you only have 1 day!

8 Best Things to do in Olden Norway from a Cruise Ship

1. visit olden old church.

If you want a just short hike from the ship (about 1 km), we would recommend a visit to the Olden Old Church which is a stunning traditional Norwegian red church in a field of flowers. When you exit the ship, walk right to locate the church.

The church was built in 1759 on the site of an old stave church dating from the 14th century.

Make sure you take a quick look inside, it is interesting to see inside. It reminded me of a Christian church you see in Viking movies.

2. Take a troll car up the Briksdal Glacier

An unmissable attraction in the Olden area is the Briksdal Glacier. If you are not that fit (or feeling lazy after a lot of eating on the ship) you can get a “ troll car ” which is a small open-air buggy up the Briksdal Glacier.

You can book them through Briksdalsbreen Fjellstove (the cafe and visitor center at the start of the hike) but it is advisable to book in advance if you are traveling to the area in peak season (between May and October). We arrived at around 11am to the glacier in June and because we had not booked the troll car in advance, we had to either walk up to the glacier or wait until 1.30pm to take a troll car.

Opting out of the 2 hour walk for a troll car, we decided to walk up the glacier.

If you decide you would like a ride on a troll car, note that you will still need to be able to walk the final leg of the trail (less than 1km) to the glacier.

It is on a flat gravel path, not particularly suitable for wheelchairs, although I did see one while I was there.

3. Hike up to the Briksdal Glacier

Another option is to hike up to the Briksdal Glacier, an arm (or “tongue”) of the larger Jostedalsbreen glacier.

When my mother heard the word “glacier” she thought we were going to be actually walking on the glacier itself (as you are in places like Iceland ). This isn’t what you are able to do here. You are able to hike to the bottom of the mountain and look up to see the glacier from below.

Unfortunately, the glacier is decreasing in size at a rapid rate. We heard from a couple that had seen the glacier just four years ago, that it was much, much bigger back then than it is now. Believe it or not, the Jostedalsbreen glacier is actually the largest glacier on mainland Europe. Most the the glacier is only seen from above so it is actually much bigger than what it looks to us.

My parents in their 60s/70s were worried about completing the hike to the glacier, but it sounds harder than it is in reality. It is not an easy hike by any means, there are uphill sections of it that leave you breathless however, if you are relatively able bodied and healthy, you will be able to complete the hike. We saw people in their 70s and 80s easily doing it. I am a little scared of heights for people like me out there you will be happy to know there were no cliff edges or anything to get me really nervous on the way up.

It is around 2,5 kilometers / 1,5 miles and will take you approximately 45 minutes uphill (less on the way back).

It is not just the glacier which is absolutely stunning, the hike up/down is just as beautiful with picturesque mountain ranges and waterfalls everywhere you look. During the walk you will cross the stunning Kleivafossen waterfall. I read that you may get a little wet crossing the waterfall this due to the mist but I did not experience this.

If you want a guided tour of the glacier, at a cheaper price than the cruise ship, this tour is a nice option.

If you are up for a DIY shore excursion, there is also a public glacier bus that takes you to the Briksdal Glacier. The bus departs from Olden harbour at 10:05am and leaves the Briksdalsbre Fjellstove Mountain lodge (beginning of the walk) at 13:30pm. The bus costs 40NOK each (around 4 USD) per way which is super cheap for Norway. The main risk in doing the bus is that the bus is full and you have no way to get to the glacier or back.

4. Go for a ride on the Loen Skylift

Another good activity to do from the Olden cruise port is to visit the Loen Skylift, in the inner part of the Nordfjord, in the heart of Fjord Norway. Loen is a town located very near from Olden, being only a 10 minute drive away. Ubers do operate in the area (although sparingly) so you might be lucky enough to get one. There is also public bus line 111 which will take you there.

The Loen Skylift takes you to the top of Mount Hoven, overlooking the stunning fjord below. It has bragging rights as one of the steepest cable cars in the world which will lift you from the fjord to 1011 m (3316 feet above sea level).

From the top, the view is quite amazing and you can see the whole of Olden including your cruise ship as well as surrounding glaciers.

You can book your tickets in advance here . It is also possible to book in person. There are two cable cars running (Hugin and Munin after Norse God Odin’s ravens) and it is not likely to sell out for the day as the troll cars are in summer so paying in person is probably a safe bet. Tickets cost around 50 USD pp.

loen skylift.

5. Eat Lunch in the sky at Hoven Restaurant

Located at the top of the Loen skylift is a great restaurant, Hoven where you can enjoy a fabulous lunch in the sky.

One of the iconic meals to try in the restaurant is the Mountain trout with celery puré, cucumber, prawns and roasted potato.

Like everything in Norway, the restaurant is not cheap and a meal will set you back NOK 440 (around $40 USD) but it is worthwhile for a lovely experience with a spectacular view.

The Skylift Charcuterie Platter Local with cured ham, salami and cheeses, olives, chutney, flatbread is also a nice option if you want a light option after some heavy eating on the cruise ship.

6. Go Hiking or Ziplining on Mount Hoven

If you are feeling energetic, there are great hiking opportunities at the top of Mount Hoven, which are available from May to October when cruise ships are in dock.

To reach the top of Mount Hoven, you need to take the Loen skylift to the top. Some of the most popular trails at the top include Mt. Skredfjellet, Jølrunden and Mt. Skredfjellet.

For adrenline junkies, you can also go zipling at the top of Mount Hoven (which is far too scary for me) but looks like a very cool experience.

ziplining-mount-hoven

7. Hike the Huaren Trail

Another trail you can complete which is close to the port (about 1km away) near Yris cafe is the Huaren Trail.

In total the viewpoint is around a 5.5 mile walk there and back from the port. The views at the top of the trail are amazing. Along the way, you will pass forest with amazing views of the spectacular landscape below.  It takes around 2 hours give or take to reach the Huaren viewpoint, 1,250 feet above sea level.(less going back downhill).

The view of the top of Nordfjord, the sixth-longest fjord in Norway, with snow capped mountains above is well worth the effort.

The hike is moderate in difficulty. It is mostly a gravelly path however the last 200m or so is known to get a little muddy so make sure you wear appropriate footwear.

8. Eat/drink at a local cafe in Olden

If you feel like a lazy day at port, that is perfectly okay too. There are only a few cafes/restaurants in town to choose from (two we counted) with Yris cafe in our opinion the best.

They have wifi and decent coffee on offer along with a large menu if you are feeling hungry. Disappointingly, there was not a lot of Norwegian specialities on offer on the menu.

Travel Better, Cheaper, Longer

How this Boomer Couple Traveled the World for a Year

Boomer couple Esther and her husband pose for a photo abroad

As a solo backpacker, there are certain areas of travel I’m not yet an expert in. Fortunately, there are plenty of experts in our community who can share their travel experiences with us! Lately, there’s been a growing trend among boomers taking sabbaticals, early retirements, and buying vans and just saying “Screw it! Let’s go!” when the kids move out.

More and more of my emails come from boomers looking for advice — not young college kids. It’s an awesome trend. So, today I wanted to share an interview with Esther and Peter. They’re couple from Canada traveling the world on a year-long sabbatical. They share their advice on health issues, budgeting, and much more!

Nomadic Matt: Hi Esther! Thanks for doing this interview. Tell us about yourself! Esther: I am an elementary school principal who has taken a self-funded leave for one year. I remarried a few years ago, and my husband, Peter, is my travel partner. I celebrated my 52nd birthday at the Pyramids of Giza, and Peter celebrated his 58th at a variety show in Bangkok . We call North Delta (a suburb of Vancouver ) home.

How did you get into travel? I think it happened in stages. When I was still in elementary school, my parents bought me a desk that had a map of the world on the top. I used to stare at that and dream of all the incredible places there are to explore in the world. Then, when I was thirteen, my parents bought a time-share. This allowed our family to travel to Mexico and Hawaii , which were my first tropical experiences. I loved the sounds and smells and the exotic feel of it.

As a university student I studied languages in both Freiburg, Germany , and Bordeaux, France .

During those two years I traveled in Europe , and I think that is when the travel bug really bit me. I have yet to recover from that bite!

Where have you been? Before this round-the-world tour, I had already traveled extensively in Europe , Mexico , Hawaii , Cuba, China , and Canada . Since August 2016, my husband and I have visited Holland , Russia, Estonia, Latvia , Lithuania , Poland , the Czech Republic , Austria , Greece , Turkey, Egypt, Sri Lanka , India , and Nepal, and we are currently in Thailand .

We still have three or four months of traveling ahead of us, and the current plan is to explore Southeast Asia , but we are open to other possibilities, too. Ironically, as we travel, my list of places to visit is growing longer rather than getting shorter!

What’s been the biggest lesson so far? The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that the world is simultaneously small and big. By this I mean that it is small enough to explore. It is big, however, in that there is an abundance of everything we require to sustain ourselves. If we were to put aside politics and borders and simply focus on ensuring that we distribute the riches of the world, there would, I honestly believe, be more than enough of everything for everyone.

Living out of a carry-on suitcase has taught me that we actually “need” very little.

What’s your number one piece of advice for new travelers? Plan, plan, and plan some more . It is not only necessary but exciting! Then be prepared to abandon your carefully made plans for unexpected opportunities that will arise. This trip we decided to forego a portion of Eastern Europe to serve as crew on a sailboat in the Dodecanese Islands, and we blew our budget to sail down the Nile on a dahabiya (passenger boat). We don’t regret those decisions one bit.

A second piece of advice would be to document your journey. I am not normally one to journal, but I do while traveling, and it is tremendous to look back on even now. We also are sharing our travel adventures through blogging and social media. I am confident that the digital and hard copies will become treasured memories when the trip is over.

Esther and her husband posing for a photo while hiking

How do you travel on a budget? We basically draw from three pots of money: my salary, Peter’s pension and savings for the trip, and the income from renting our house. We are fortunate that all three sources of income come in monthly, which makes it easy to budget. We also have savings to dip into should the need arise, but so far we haven’t had to.

We look for budget accommodation. Hotels.com is where I do most of our bookings; because I write reviews of our stays, I get a percentage off subsequent stays and a free night for every ten paid nights. We have also used Airbnb on occasion.

We have been fortunate to spend some time with my relatives in Austria and also with many Couchsurfing hosts. I hesitate to put either of these in the budget category though, because we don’t use these to save money but rather because it is such an enriching experience. We have been fortunate to have had wonderful hosts in the past eight months.

What budget tips do you have for other travelers? Track every penny you spend. While Peter tracks things electronically using an app called Andromoney , I try to keep a running total in my head. Often my total is WAY off, as it is easy to forget a taxi ride, a cup of coffee, a snack at a roadside stand. We go over our $150 [Canadian] for the two of us some days, knowing we need to make it up on others.

Your husband has some health issues. How do you handle that on the road? While we have been planning this round-the-world trip for a few years, our resolve became greater when Peter had a stroke two years ago. He worked hard to recover, but it was a reminder that life is uncertain and that we don’t know how many days or years any of us have ahead of us, so we should fill them doing what we love.

We delayed our trip by one year while Peter worked on recovering. Originally, we planned on driving around Iceland so we could hike to the natural hot springs. Peter’s high blood pressure and hot springs aren’t a good combination, so instead we decided to sign up for a bike and barge tour in Holland .

His medical condition also caused us to think carefully about which travel insurance would cover pre-existing conditions. Peter packed a year’s worth of medication and his blood pressure cuff, and he monitors his blood pressure regularly. Additionally, I have a bad hip, and the doctor has told me I will eventually require a hip replacement. We strive to live a healthy, mainly vegetarian lifestyle while traveling, but it is difficult in many countries.

Between the two of us, we are mindful of our physical limitations and that some activities we might have undertaken in our twenties simply aren’t for us now. That is the reality of growing older (for us at least). We are still able to do all of the activities we enjoy…just scaled back a bit.

Esther and her husband posing for a photo while on a boat

Have you had to see any doctors on the road? Was getting a year’s worth of medicine difficult? I had a really bad cold while in Sri Lanka over Christmas so we went to the hospital. The hospital visit and medications were only $25 USD.

I also had to have a doctor make a house call to the hotel while in India due to vertigo caused by a buildup of water in the ear, and he charged $23 USD for the house call and medication.

For both of these medical interventions, we paid cash because it wasn’t enough to send to our medical insurance.

As far of the year’s worth medication, through the Canadian medical plan you can only purchase six months’ worth, so the other half was out of pocket. Apparently, we could have picked up these medications cheaply in some countries but found that out too late. I am not sure we would want to have counted on that though because we find that even trying to get baby aspirin in the right dosage can be a challenge.

Do you meet a lot of travelers your age on the road? If so, how? This has been tricky. Most of the travellers our age are on group tours so they don’t tend to seek to expand their circle of friends. I make a point to start conversations with people wherever and whenever I can. Hostel and hotel lobbies are often good spots to connect with people.

The most significant meetings have definitely been through Couchsurfing . When looking for a host, I don’t focus too much on the age, as our age bracket makes up a small percentage of the Couchsurfing world.

Besides, I can enjoy the company of someone regardless of their age. Connecting with younger people has also been great and is quite rejuvenating. We have definitely made friendships on the road that I am confident will endure.

Do you find being older travelers makes it harder to find Couchsurfing hosts? A lot of older travelers worry that the site is “just for young people”. I don’t think our age has been an issue at all with Couchsurfing. If you make it clear that the Couchsurfing will be mutually satisfying, then age should not be an issue.

I’d say more than 50% of the “surfers” are younger than us and we have had wonderful experiences. Actually, I think that a lot of the younger Couchsurfers take a lot without giving back by either not hosting themselves or just being a guest that sees it as a free hotel room. So being young could sometimes be viewed as a disadvantage in finding a host, in my mind.

Esther and her husband posing for a photo in Alaska

What’s one mistake you’ve made that you could have avoided? Today we were robbed by our cabbie. My husband had been to the bank earlier in the day. Usually, we split up the money between us and also stash some in some secret places so as not to have all our money in one spot. Today, we were in a hurry, hot, and tired, and we were going to do it once we got back to the hotel. It was a perfect storm.

In the end, the cabbie got about 3,000,000 dong ($180 USD) by feigning outrage and then grabbing a bunch of bills from my husband’s open wallet. Not knowing what he was going to do next, we got out of his cab as soon as he hit the unlock button.

He was acting quite irrational, so we were happy to remove ourselves from that situation without greater loss. It has rattled us a bit and reminded us to follow all the common-sense safety measures .

What advice do you have for travelers your age? GO NOW! Many people are waiting for retirement or the economy to improve or their children or grandchildren to be older.

There is always something that will hold you back .

Independent traveling won’t get easier as the years pass. Some people might feel it is a selfish indulgence, but perhaps that isn’t such a bad thing. We have spent decades dedicating ourselves to working, raising children, and dreaming about “one day.”

It is OK to decide that day is today—pack your bags and go!

Who are the Old Couple on Travel Guides?

The old couple on Travel Guides are known as the “Bucket List Couple.” They have been married for over 50 years and have traveled to all seven continents. In their early retirement, they decided to start a travel blog to share their experiences with others. They have been featured in many publications, including National Geographic and The New York Times.

Do Travel Guides Kevin And Janetta Have Children?

No, Kevin and Janetta do not have children.

What is the Controversy With Kevin And Janetta?

The controversy with Kevin and Janetta is that they are not sure whether or not they should have another baby. They already have two children, but feel like their family is incomplete without a third child. On the other hand, they worry about the financial and time commitment that another child would require. They are also concerned about the impact having another child would have on their relationship. Ultimately, Kevin and Janetta need to make a decision that is best for them and their family.

Do Stack And Mel Have Partners?

There is no definitive answer to this question, as it largely depends on the individual circumstances of each person involved. However, in general, it is unlikely that stack and Mel would have partners, as they are both very independent and self-sufficient people. They are also both quite introverted, so it is doubtful that they would seek out or be interested in romantic relationships.

Who is Leaving Travel Guides

There’s no denying that the Internet has changed the way we travel. No longer do we need to lug around heavy guidebooks when we can simply pull up TripAdvisor on our phones. But while this may be convenient, it’s not without its drawbacks. One of the most significant is that travel guides are becoming increasingly irrelevant, and as a result, their publishers are struggling to keep up. It’s not just that travelers are relying on online reviews instead of printed ones; it’s that the entire format of a travel guidebook is becoming obsolete. After all, why would you want to read about a destination when you can watch a video about it or even better, experience it yourself through virtual reality? And with Google Maps, there’s really no need for maps anymore either – you can just type in where you want to go and let the app do the rest. In short, travel guides are being left behind in an increasingly digital world, and their publishers are struggling to keep up. So if you’re planning your next trip, don’t forget to leave your trusty guidebook at home – chances are, you won’t need it anyway.

Janetta Stones

Janetta Stones is an amazing woman who has overcome so much in her life. She was born with a heart condition and was not expected to live more than a few days. However, she defied the odds and survived. She went on to graduate from college and become a successful businesswoman. Janetta is an inspiring example of what it means to never give up on yourself.

Kevin And Janetta Surname

Kevin and Janetta Surname have been married for over 20 years and have four children. They live in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Kevin is a stay-at-home dad and Janetta is a homemaker. The couple met in college and have been together ever since. They are both active in their community and enjoy spending time with their family and friends.

The old couple had been planning to travel for years but never got around to it. But now that they’re retired, they finally have the time to explore the world. They’ve started reading travel guides and are excited to learn about new cultures and see new sights. So far, they’ve been impressed with how much there is to see and do, and they can’t wait to start their journey.

Matt, 45, works for the local council while Brett, 51, is a primary school teacher, and the two love to travel - meaning they have a lot of opinions on how holidays should be.

The difference between the two is that while Matt loves to organise everything, do everything and eat out for every meal, Brett is happy to go along for the ride.

They are quick with biting commentary on everything around them but are generous, kind and love a laugh.

The Fren family.

Fren family

The Frens are well equipped to cope with stressful family situations and can always find the funny side of any holiday disaster.

Mark, 59, is the upbeat and forthright dad, so when on holiday he loves to negotiate hotel room upgrades.

For more than 30 years he has been happily married to Cathy, 57, whose quirky sense of humour and distinctive laugh is contagious.

Together they have two kids, Victoria, 27, who is always ready to voice an opinion, and Jonathon, 29, who is the more reserved one of the bunch.

The Frens are unafraid to give anything a go, which often leads them into unpredictable situations.

Kev, Dorian, and Teng

This trio, made up of Kev, Dorian and Teng, are all good mates who share a love of junk food, computer games, music and movies.

Kev, 28, is the sensible pop-culture expert with an arts degree, while Dorian, 24, is laidback, polite and studying to become a teacher.

As for Teng, 25, he's the risk-taker who has deferred uni for the last three years and is always looking for a good time.

All are Australian-born and their combined Chinese, Greek and Vietnamese heritage gives them a unique take on the world.

Despite Dorian’s Greek heritage, they often refer to themselves as “the three Asian boys” who are fearless and willing to give anything a go.

Kevin and Janetta

Kevin, 63, and Janetta, 69, describe themselves as 'holiday snobs', as they want the best of the best for everything.

The pair, who have been married for over three decades, don’t have children, and are passionate wine enthusiasts.

They also love exploring big cities, but before hitting the road, they make sure they do their research to ensure they experience the best holiday.

And if the quality or service isn’t up to scratch they will not hesitate to make a complaint - earning them the “we don’t suffer in silence” catchphrase.

Stack and Mel.

Stack and Mel

Identical twin cowgirls, Stack and Mel, are still relatively new to the travel game, and are a little wary when venturing anywhere beyond the Outback. Even so, they are willing to give anything a crack.

The girls, 31, are big on the rodeo scene, competing together and against each other in roping events. They have travelled extensively around country Australia for competitions.

Having spent most of their lives in the bush, they are blissfully unaware of other cultures, languages and customs - but this doesn’t stop them voicing an opinion.

They are used to roughing it and are not easily impressed by fancy holidays, and would much rather camp outdoors with their horses and dogs rather than stay in the city.
