Bali’s highest peak, the dramatic, 3031m-high Gunung Agung volcano, is home to a number of important religious sites. Summitting Bali’s holiest peak requires a very strenuous guided climb, but the ascent and descent can be managed in one day.

Climbing this iconic volcano is one of the best Bali tours, but be aware that this is a serious climb. It’s strongly advised hikers book an established trekking guide. You’ll find many guide services in Sidemen village, 18km from Pura Pasar Agung; as well as Selat and Tirtagangga.

In the resorts, there’s Bali Sunrise Trekking and Tours in Ubud and Perama (bookable through their offices in most tourist centres or at www.peramatour.com). Else climb with Gung Bawa , a good-humoured, highly experienced and dependable guide who speaks excellent English.

The picturesque setting provides the ideal backdrop for your yoga journey, allowing you to connect deeply with nature and your inner self. The classes are often held in open-air studios or on pristine beaches, enabling you to soak up the breathtaking views while immersing yourself in the ancient wisdom of yoga.

Whether you are a seasoned yogi or a beginner, Bali offers a wide range of yoga styles and retreats, catering to all levels and preferences.

Just like climbing Agung, climbing Gunung Batur, is one of the best Bali tours. On a clear day, no scenery in Bali can match that of the Batur area. With its volcanic peaks and silver-turquoise crater lake, the scale and spectacle of this landscape remain unrivalled.

The best way to see it is from the top of Bali’s most climbed mountain, the 1717m-high Gunung Batur (Mount Batur).

Wisps of sulphurous smoke still drift from smaller cones on the slopes of this ancient volcano, which last erupted in 2000. Given the scenery, it’s no surprise that this is one of Bali’s most popular tourist destinations.

Most only visit on a day trip but stay overnight in either lakeside Toya Bungkah or Kedisan and hike to the summit to experience the magic of the scenery at sunrise. A guide is essential for sunrise treks. Use the Association of Mount Batur Trekking Guides , which has offices in Toya Bungkah and Pura Jati.

There are several popular rice paddy walks on the outskirts of Ubud , some of which can be combined into one almost circular trek. Each has views that are perfect real-life versions of the Walter Spies-style paintings you see in Ubud's museums and galleries.

Cutting across the rice fields, the track becomes totally indistinct at times. But these narrow paths that run along the top of the dykes look out across to the amazing Gunung Agung (cloud cover permitting) as conical-hatted farmers work in the glittering rice paddies with the mountain in the background.

Travel tip - if you're looking for a bit of relaxation, our " Rest and Relaxation " trip is perfect for you!

Protected as a marine conservation area, the reefs around Nusa Lembongan attract divers from all over the world, not least for the chance to swim with manta rays and the one-tonne legendary local giant, the mola mola (oceanic sunfish), from early July to the end of October.

The diving here is unquestionably the most dramatic in Bali, but also rarely benign, as currents and waves can be fierce. Many of the reefs are rewarding for snorkelling. Prime spots off Nusa Lembongan that are accessible from the shore if the tide is right are Mangrove Corner and Mushroom Bay.

Virtually every guesthouse and hotel on the Islands can organize trips or contact one of the several dive centres on the island. Seek out five-star PADI dive school Big Fish Diving at Jungutbatu.

Fringed by dazzling white-sand beaches, turquoise waters and reefs that teem with turtles and fish, the trio of the tiny Gili Islands just off Lombok ’s northwest coast are strikingly beautiful and have exploded in popularity.

With no motorized vehicles allowed on any of the islands (just horse carts and bicycles), and swathes of the dusty interiors still taken up with coconut plantations and sandy tracks, the Gilis are as close as you can get to living the tropical dream.

Island life here can be incredibly seductive, and most visitors revel in long days spent snorkelling the reefs, eating fresh seafood and enjoying the spectacular views, with the volcanic profiles of Bali and Lombok filling the horizon.

It's one of the most popular Bali tours, as it's possible to visit any of the three on a day trip from Bali.

Gili Trawangan is the most developed. Diminutive Gili Meno, next east of Gili Trawangan, is the smallest and quietest of the Gilis, with no nightlife except a laidback bar or two. East again, Gili Air falls somewhere in between, with plenty of restaurants and bars but a much larger population of islanders to balance out the tourist influx.

Dive deep into Balinese culture with this tailor-made trip to Bali's Culture & Gili's beaches . Visits include rice field walks, the Gates of Heaven, water temples like Tirta Empul and Tirta Gangga as well as a traditional cooking class. Your trip ends with the beaches of Gili Air and Jimbaran.

A cool, less populated landscape of morning mists and forest, inland north Bali feels like a different island when compared to the crowded southern plains. The Bedugal highlands is an area defined by mountains, lakes and waterfalls with swathes of clove and coffee plantations around hilltown Munduk.

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, an important temple and a destination for Balinese-Hindu pilgrims, is also here. In the east is the active Gunung Batur volcano where occasional puffs of smoke waft from black rock, one of Bali's most popular sunrise hikes. At its base are other walks over parched, ethereal terrain peppered with giant boulders ejected from the earth's core.

Dolphin-spotting boat trips are wildly popular around Lovina and cultural activities including cooking classes are on offer too. Lovina’s proximity to good snorkelling and diving sites, and as a base for day-trips to nearby waterfalls and temples are another key appeal and make this area a good spot to try different activities. The Buddhist monastery and hot springs (air panas) at Banjar, 10km west, and temples and waterfalls east of Singaraja make a good days out.

8. Explore Bali's best beaches

Exploring the best beaches in Bali is an enchanting adventure that unveils a world of sun-kissed shores and turquoise waters. From the iconic Kuta Beach to the hidden gems like Nusa Dua and Uluwatu, each beach offers its own unique charm.

Seminyak Beach, just a stone's throw away, boasts trendy beach clubs and luxurious resorts, making it a hotspot for both relaxation and entertainment. For those in search of tranquillity, the pristine shores of Nusa Dua beckon, offering pristine white sand and calm waters perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

Further north, the black sands of Lovina Beach allure visitors with its serene ambience and the opportunity to spot playful dolphins at sunrise. There are tons of tours in Bali that take you to the best beaches. Our " Beaches and Temples " trip takes you to all the best places.

Lying just below Candikuning at 1200m above sea level, Danau Bratan (Lake Bratan) is the largest and most visited of the three spiritually charged crater lakes around Bedugul. Thought to be 35m deep in places. It is surrounded by forested hills, with the bulk of Gunung Catur (2096m), the caldera’s highest peak, rising sheer behind.

The trail to the summit begins at Gua Jepang, caves built by Indonesian prisoners of war during World War II, and passes through agricultural fields ending where dense forest and the ascent begins.

The last few kilometres require climbing over exposed tree roots on muddy trails and at the top is Pura Puncak Mangu, a simple temple built by the first Mengwi raja and, of course, spectacular views of the three lakes below.

Nearby in Munduk, the most accessible of several falls in the area is the pretty Tanah Barak waterfall, also known as Red Coral Waterfall or simply Munduk Waterfall.

One of the best Bali tours is exploring its landscape by bicycle. A thrilling and immersive way to connect with the island's natural beauty and cultural heritage. As you pedal along, you'll be captivated by the ever-changing scenery, from lush rice terraces to cascading waterfalls and dense jungles.

Bicycle tours are particularly popular in Ubud, the cultural heart of Bali, and meander through its surrounding countryside. The iconic Tegallalang Rice Terraces are a sight to behold, with their intricate green terraces sculpted into the landscape. Take in the breathtaking views as you ride through the rugged terrain, passing by ancient temples and traditional Balinese architecture.

Did you know our Love trip to Bali includes a bicycle tour?

Experience the stunning natural beauty of Bali from a whole new perspective with the Island of the Gods' first and only ballooning adventure. Take to the skies in a 23-metre hot air balloon and soar above the breathtaking Tanah Gajah area, located amongst the legendary rice paddies of Ubud.

From the comfort of a cosy wicker basket, you'll climb to a thrilling 50 metres above the lush rice fields and float at the end of a tether, enjoying awe-inspiring panoramas of the tropical forests surrounding central Bali with Mount Agung on the eastern horizon.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do you need in Bali?

As many as you can stay for! There are countless private tours in Bali and other activities which can keep you entertained for weeks on end; although we’d love for you to stay as long as possible, a week or two should be enough to discover the best activities in Bali for you to do. However long you plan to go for, you’ll definitely want to come back as soon as possible to take some of the Bali excursions you missed out on!

What clothes do you need to pack for a trip to Bali?

The diverse weather and range of private Bali trips you might be undertaking makes it necessary to pack a variety of lightweight clothes, comfortable shoes and a swimsuit as a minimum (the latter will come in handy for many Bali activities!). This should include shorts, t-shirts, skirts and other items of loose-fitting clothing - the island is sunny most of the time, but there’s no harm throwing in a rain jacket if you happen to get stuck in a shower! Before embarking on your Bali excursions, it’s worth taking the time to research the best time to visit Bali so you can try and avoid a downpour when hoping for a bright and sunny getaway - although, we’d recommend you still pack a variety of clothes so you can expect the worst and hope for the best. It’s important to be prepared for any occasion so you can make the most of our stunning Bali tours for 2024!

Are trips to Bali family friendly?

Yes! Day tours in Bali are perfect for any family holiday, due to the diverse range of activities ranging from adventure to relaxing that are suitable for any age. With cultural sites to discover, beaches to relax on, fun filled activities to partake in and even amazing amenities at most hotels, you can be sure that most Bali tours are safe for children - although we recommend taking normal precautions with your children as you would anywhere in the world!

Bali Tour Reviews

Bali - tour highlights and travel tips.

No visit to Bali is complete without visiting its pristine beaches

A trip to Bali is your chance to experience, without any exaggeration, a true paradise on Earth. This enchanting Indonesian Island is not only home to some of the most stunning natural feats in the world, but also a historically rich and intriguing culture that continues to thrive in the face of mass tourism. Expect your holidays in Bali to be a tropical getaway like no other.

Tour Highlights

  • An absolute must-visit for all travelers to Bali, Tanah Lot is a rocky island where you will find an ancient Hindu temple, one of the most significant religious sites on the island. This spot is especially popular for watching spectacular Balinese sunsets — one of the top things to do in Bali .
  • Tucked away on the southern coast of Bali, Nusa Dua is an area geared to visitors who enjoy the finer things in life. Home to several 5-star luxury resorts and gorgeous, golden-sand beaches, Nusa Dua is a hedonist’s dream destination.
  • Bali also boasts some of the most coveted surfing spots in the world. Among the best beaches in Bali for catching the waves are Uluwatu, Padang Padang and Bingin.
  • Bali Sarafi and Marine Park is an open zoo, where you can see over 60 species of wildlife brought in from four continents.

Travel Tips

  • To experience Balinese exciting cuisine like a local, head over to your nearest warung. At these roadside family-run business, you will have a chance to try authentic Bali dishes without hurting your wallet. Check out some of the best and affordable food tours in Bali as well.
  • When visiting temples and other sacred sites, make sure you are dressed modestly.
  • Bali’s climate is characterized by two seasons, wet and dry. The high season takes place in June, July and August, when there’s usually no rain and the weather is sunny. However, if you want to avoid the crowds and get a better deal on accommodation prices, opt instead for May or September, when the weather is still dry and hotels aren’t as packed.

Karen Walker , Ogden, UT - This was a trip of a lifetime! And a check mark on my bucket list. Everything was perfect. From our Craftours guide to the bus driver and attendant are perfect. I loved this trip and all the activities. It is probably the best I’ve been on to date.

Jill Burrington-Brown , Snohomish, WA - Wonderful trip. It was packed full of fun adventures. I really enjoyed the elephant experience, the monkey forest, and of course, learning how to make batik fabric and taking home my work. Would love to do this again.

Cheri , Omaha, NE - Deb Haugen was a great tour manager and Kandiman was a good local guide. He was outgoing and loved to laugh and tell jokes.

Vicki Hauser , Overland Park, KS - Bali was one of the most enjoyable and educational tours I have been pleased to attend.

Rose Smilgys , Anthem, AZ - The Bali Experience was one of a kind! What an amazing place. The tours and activities were all first class along with the hotels.

Lori Park , Los Cruces, NM - The trip of my life. Bali wraps her kindness around you the minute you land. Gentle kindness is their lifestyle. Everything about Bali is over the top in beauty.

Susan Harlan , Wakarusa, KS - The Craftours Bali Experience was just that, an experience! For anyone who loves to participate in or is curious about different types of crafting, this definitely fits the bill.

Debi Lander , Lakewood Ranch, FL - A hands-on look at the traditional arts and crafts, and craftsmen of Bali with time to relax and enjoy the exotic island.

Ann Murray , Crystal Lake, IL - The Craftours Bali Experience exceeded my expectations. Deb Haugen and Kandi were the perfect guides on our tour of the Island of the gods and the Balinese people and culture. This was both an educational crafting tour and food for the mind/soul. The mix of planned activities and free time was great. We were able to add a meaningful side trip to Pura Tirta Empul and participate in a purification ceremony. Some people from our group also took a side trip to Pura Ulun Danu Bratan. Overall, this trip was absolutely awesome.

Lee Heilicher , Chaska, MN - Craftours is always a great tour to go on. From the guides to the itineraries, you always have a perfect time.

Nancy McAfee , Seattle, WA - This Craftours Bali Experience was everything I had hoped it would be and more! We saw Bali tourist sites but also spent time getting acquainted with the day today Bali. The friendly welcoming people in the hotel, the stores, the restaurants, and on the streets made this trip! I learned about the expert craftsmanship and artistry of the wood carvers, silversmiths, ikat weavers, batik makers, painters! The workshops were fun and informative, the staff kind and attentive! We even were able to visit a large local market place for a morning! My biggest takeaway is that every building is repurposed many times over! This is a marvelous recycle of ancient to new! This was a trip of a lifetime for me and I loved it!

Joanna Tinios , Johns Island, SC - Excellent value.

Jim Mann , Alpine, CA - Had a great time, and loved seeing the ladies having smiles and happy conversation. The activities were excellent and a real pleasure to learn the crafts.

Joyce Mann , Alpine, CA - My husband and I had a wonderful time. We really enjoyed Candy and all the interesting things he pointed out. He always made sure we were doing well. Betsy was also great. She was very attuned to all our needs.

Wiladene Yankee , Muscatine, IA - I was impressed with the program and the way my travel was handled. Very happy with all people who explained program and materials

Karen Blount , Bakersfield, CA - I have never been to Asia before. Meeting Betsy at the airport and having good advice was wonderful. We did so many things- lots of new experiences like wood carving, elephant riding and of course making our own batiks. All the staff were friendly and helpful. It was a great adventure.

Wiladene Yankee , Muscatine, IA - Well run, time well planned and I would do this again

Paula Logan , Burlington, IA - The accommodations were excellent. We had the opportunity to experience many aspects of the island.

Melinda Armstrong , Monmouth, IL - Bali was not what I was expecting. It was a beautiful country with extraordinary people. Our local and Craftours guide - Deb Huagen - were fantastic. They really knew the traditions and history of the Balinese people. The accommodations were top notch - Jim you pick the best. Would highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to see the Southern Hemisphere.

Jeanne Schmaltz , Benicia, CA - Craftours Bali experience was much more than I expected. Deb Haugen, our tour guide, was excellent in the way she gathered us for our tours. She was kind and gentle in her approach even when she thought I had Covid(which I did not). The Balinese people were very patient and respectful in the way they addressed us. The crafts that we learned from cooking, dyeing fabric to woodwork is something I can do at home.

Pam Schwartz , Manakin Sabot, VA - "The tour was very informative and interesting."

April Lazarus , Jamesville, NY - "It was fabulous! We saw, did, learned, and experienced so many different things. Batik shopping was wild! This was the best trip of my life!!"

Tami Henry , Overland Park, KS - "The trip was good. Enjoyed the picture painting, the Batik factory and fabric making, the elephant park and the Ubud Monkey forest. Our local tour guide was excellent. The ice cold washcloths provided by his wife were very appreciated. Our guide Deb Haugen was good also."

Cecilia , Malvern, AR - "I absolutely loved this trip! The accommodation were fantastic. The tours were very crafty and there was time to explore."

Krista Labie , Plymouth, MN - "The Bali tour was my first tour with Craftours. I have been very impressed with the professionalism of the Craftours office staff who made sure travel insurance and any other concerns were addressed before we left. Our Craftours guide Deb Haugen made the tour very fun and entertaining. The accommodation were first class and activities allowed us to interact directly with Balinese crafters and artists. I will go on other Craftours in the future."

Ileen Miller , Oceanside, CA - "It was fabulous- loved the workshops, seeing the local countryside, talking with the Balinese people, eating the typical food."

Susan and David Simpson , Danville, PA - "Unbelievable trip. Was a wonderful and informative trip. So many interesting side trips. Loved the Elephant Sanctuary and the ride. The Ikat weaving and the Batik were the very best. AND we got to participate. How wonderful was that. Even my husband, who is not a fiber person, had a great time. Best trip ever!!!"

Grace Brouillette , Banning, CA - "Bali is a lovely country. This trip covered two different areas of Bali. We saw several types of crafts and participated in painting and wood carving. We made a flower offering also. The optional tours were awesome. The Bali Bird Park and the Elephant Safari Park were wonderful. The pace was very good."

Patricia Davis , Tucson, AZ - "A wonderful opportunity to experience many local craft venues and participate ‘hands on’ at many of them; this was something most visitors will never experience on their own."

Nanette McDoniels , Tucson, AZ - "It was a very great trip. We had a lot of fun. The people were very nice and helpful. Everything was taken care of for us. The hotels were very nice. Shopping was great. We Learned a lot on the tours."

Julie Knebel , Eugene, OR - "After a very long flight, I landed in a country that was truly magnificent unlike anything I have ever experienced. The Balinese are the kindest people and their culture and art work truly fascinating."

Kathy McKernan , Rock, MI - "Bali was a wonderful destination and the price of this trip made it affordable"

Cheryl Force , Vaughn, WA - "I planned this tour 2 years ago to mark my birthday doing something really big on my own. I thoroughly enjoyed this tour especially the opportunity to make my own batik and riding on an elephant at the reserve!"

Suzanne Brown , The Villages, FL - "Had an absolutely wonderful time on this tour. What a beautiful country and such beautiful and friendly people. Our tour guide and leader made everything perfect."

Ann McDevitt , Burlington, MA - "The tour was excellent!"

Ann Garvey , Wheaton, IL - "This trip to Bali was a fantastic and well balanced mix of interesting activities! there was time to relax and explore on your own as well! I could not have arranged such a trip on my own, I am grateful for the leadership and insight you have provided!"

Paula & Rich Bolan , Tucson, AZ - "We enjoyed the tour. It was an experience we will always remember. The Elephant ride, the Bird Park and the Batik fabric workshop/warehouse made the trip for us. Would have liked to have seen more of the country, ie., the rice terraces. We enjoyed the wood carving (Rich may have a new hobby!) and the painting class was fun."

Vera Lee H. , San Francisco, CA - "The Bali tour was fascinating. I enjoyed the art demos and the hands on workshops (wood carving, acrylic painting, batik printing) with the master artisans immensely. Having the scheduled events in the morning and free afternoons or evenings were ideal. It allowed me time to process what I learned and observed before venturing into a new venue the following day. Also, it gave time for meandering the street market, taking in a massage, soaking in the pool, taking CT’s optional tours, or just unwinding in the beautiful hotel room."

Jillian Jary , Nelson, New Zealand - "Wondrous, exciting, hands on. Bus 3 company had so much fun, laughter, fellowship and camaraderie. Not only was Hartana our Bali guide very knowledgeable, he anticipated our every need. Our bus drivers were skilled and drove very safely. Our travel manager was fabulous and made sure that our every need was met. Deb Haugen’s gregarious personality spread warmth and love throughout our group. Lifelong friendships have been struck. Days of being creative with new friends who supported each other and made sure that everyone had fun and came away smiling."

Mary Sandison , Wrentham, MA - "One word could describe the Bali expedition, AWESOME! But to expand, I thought the trip was well organized with just the right amount of structured time vs our own down time. Being in a new country, I always felt safe and could ask any questions of the Craftours Escort and/or our Balinese Guide. Our Guide provided details of daily life and the customs of his country with pride, I so enjoyed his stories and appreciated his cautions when necessary. This was my first Craftours experience and I look forward to my next trip, Peru is calling me!"

Marcia Richardson , Jacksonville, FL - "I had a wonderful time on the Ultimate Arts and Crafts Expedition to Bali... The resorts where we stayed during the trip were top notch and the staff of each were extremely accommodating to all of us as they seemed to go over and above to please us. The guides and travel managers were truly awesome - they looked after all of us, even those of us that were not in their group... I know want to participate in another trip."

Patricia Wilson , Willits, CA - "The entire trip was far above anything I had imagined! The Balinese people are so gracious and the countryside enchanting! We loved participating in the crafts offered. It was wonderful to be able to bring home our own attempts from the various workshops! Our efforts at the crafts gave us a greater appreciation of what the local people have created! What fun to shop in the open-aired markets and be in contact with the charming people! Our daily hearty breakfasts started us out with the energizing foods that we needed to experience the wonders of the day! Thank you so much for the exquisite welcoming and farewell dinners - the celebrations couldn't have been more apropos. We LOVED our tour guide who was from the city of Ubud. He lovingly and humorously spoke of his native land - giving insights only someone from Bali could impart! The hotel accommodation were excellent - one a more intimate setting, the other amazingly lovely with the gorgeous landscaping and closeness to the Indian Ocean. We all delighted in the pretty Balinese dancers and rindik bamboo music that greeted us as we entered the hotel for the first time. I cannot stop thinking about our wonderful adventures...and speak highly of our experiences to all who have asked! Many thanks! Our time in Bali will give us happy thoughts for our lifetime!"

Sally Mack , Guernsey, WY - "What an incredible way to visit a country, to meet the people and learn about the culture. While many tours visit museums and historical sites (and I enjoy that too), Crafttours allowed us to literally meet "real" people, in their homes and businesses. And to have the opportunity to see, and experience to a small degree, the handiwork of Bali! Just wonderful. I will be looking at future possibilities."

Karen Fournier , Drumheller, Alberta - "I absolutely loved this trip! I have never traveled with a tour group before, and I was impressed with the service, the top-notch hotels and excursions provided. Already put a deposit down for the Ireland trip in 2019!!"

Betsy Martinson , Denver, CO - "Traveling with Craft Tours makes visits to exotic locations effortless, educational and entertaining."

Ann Moroz , The Villages, FL - "Absolutely wonderful! We will travel with Craftours again."

Carol Christy , Bixby, OK - "This was my second trip to Bali and my third trip with Craftours. Everything was top grade! I saw things I hadn't seen before, met new friends and thoroughly enjoyed "island" life. I'm already thinking of when I can go again.... but there are so many places in the world yet to discover."

Kag Buckley , Topping, VA - "This was a truly exotic destination. the people and the crafts were awesome and unique."

Marsha McElroy , Tulsa, OK - "Wonderful trip, I appreciated staying in the city and then going to the beach resort. Our local guide Matada was well informed and interesting. Everyone we met made us feel welcome."

Theodora Carter , Scottsdale, AZ - "I thoroughly enjoyed the adventure and the wonderful people I met on the tour. I honestly loved being in Bali so much I did not want to return to the States. Leaving Bali was very depressing for me."

Nikki Barker , Onalaska, WI - "This trip was so much fun and more than I expected! To be able to travel with my mom and grandma and experience all of the fun crafts and experiences we had- it will be something I will never forget! On a side note- the price for this trip was a steal! You get to do so much and stay at beautiful resorts for a fraction of the cost! I will definitely take another trip through Craftours!!"

Kathie Vaughn , Carmichael, CA - "Spending a week in Bali was a dream come true. You can't beat the price and diversity of activities offered by Craftours!"

Joanne Bouchard , Henderson, NV - "What a wonderful adventure--once in a lifetime!! We experienced beautiful Bali, learned about the people and their culture, learned new crafts and met wonderful fellow travelers. Thank you Craftours."

Jean Cassell , Cashton, WI - "This was one of the places I always wanted to go to. This tour was so much more than I could have thought it would be. Everything was first class so planned out. I think we really liked it, as our conversations on the way home was, where do we go next."

Cynthia Hanson , Durham, CA - "Great, eye opening experience! The hands-on projects at various workshops gave me a deeper appreciation for the skill and craftsmanship involved. Going behind the scenes and storefronts makes a more lasting impression and gives depth to my memories of Bali. So nice not to spend time and energy on the logistics of the trip. Time and energy spent absorbing the experiences."

Sandra (Sandy) Millett , Corvallis, OR - "Once in Bali and broken up into smaller groups, the daily tours worked well and were very enjoyable."

Mary Penko , Pacifica, CA - "Wonderful trip, excellent guide (Alice)! Our Bali guide was also great!"

Dianne Caron , Red Deer, Alberta - "This tour was an incredible experience. The people were awesome, the interaction with the locals was very good. Our tour guide was very dedicated to keeping us happy and healthy. She was just great. Being able to actually get in and "get my hands dirty" so to speak; beyond words amazing..."

Faye Oszli , Grand Prairie, Alberta - "An awesome experience, great to learn about and try our hand at some new crafts."

Karen Uridel , Mentor, OH - "I loved this trip. The hotels were beautiful and more than I expected. The people were kind and thoughtful and generous. The events were well planned and very interesting."

Kathy Blakey , San Diego, CA - "What an incredible trip to Bali. I never thought that I would be so moved as I was by the precious souls of Bali! Their kindness, generosity, humility are the things we need more of throughout the world. I had a great time learning so much about Batiks. I no longer look at them the same. The elephants, monkeys, mask making, batiking, shopping (oh the shopping), massages, food, painting, our local guides, bus drivers, the food, did I mention the food? A trip of a lifetime. The trip is for anyone who really wants to learn from the people of Bali and find inner peace. Highly recommended. I will go again!!"

Doris Hulse , The Villages, FL - "The tour was amazing. We stayed at two excellent hotels, one in Ubud and one at the beach in Nusa Dua. They were both beautiful but very different from each other. The first was smaller and more of a boutique hotel, the beach hotel was huge, and very well appointed. The tours were great, I don't know how you could get around to everything we did without a tour group like Craft Tours."

Patty DeSaye , Whitehall, MT - "This trip was an experience of a lifetime."

Karen Draper , Tigard, OR - "It was an incredible trip. The people on our bus (#5) were great. Sherrill was a fantastic tour director."

Sharon Sato , Freemont, CA - "This tour was fantastic. The people were truly gracious, the different craft projects were great, especially learning how to make Batiks."

Jes Ballas , Walnutport, PA - "This was a very unique way to experience Bali. I don't think the average tourist got to see & do the things we did. We got to see Bali in a unique way by having hands-on experiences with local people which was fascinating."

Carol Thompson , Phoenix, AZ - "This tour took me to places that the average tourist would not see. I enjoyed the variety of items we made and the gentle push outside my comfort zone. Our tour leader was great, and I met many wonderful people."

Karen Eiler , Moline, IL - "Beyond my expectations."

Donna Koser , Westminster, SC - "Enjoyed the tour."

Faith Clover , St. Paul, MN - "This was my first trip and you might say, a trial run. I was very impressed with the overall organization, the quality of accommodation, the crafts we were introduced to and in which we participated. In general, these far exceeded my expectations. First, a short series of talks on the history and cultural background of Bali, especially on the role of crafts in the culture. The batik day was great! Excellent teachers, plenty of time to finish our projects."

Roberta Allen , Oceanside, CA - "This trip was AMAZING! Bali is a wonderful destination, and Craftours really pulled out all the stops with our hotels in Ubud and Nusa Dua. The hotels selected were top-notch and made the experience so much better."

Peggy Moore , Hillsboro, Oregon - "Great trip with interesting sites and classes"

Tammy Kaplan , Savage, Minnesota - "This was a top notch tour in all ways. They make sure that we are well cared for at all times. It was educational, fun, safe, with a huge variety of activities every day, great people, just a blast!"

Jinny Beyer , - "I’ve recently returned from a fabulous trip to Indonesia. It was spectacular. Craftours certainly knows how to run a tour. We stayed in a first class resort and took day trips from there. We did lots of sight seeing, sewing, and eating the delicious Indonesian food! This is the third trip that I have taken with them. In all of them the accommodation were first class, the organization exceptional, and on each trip the local guides that were arranged have been awesome....so much planning, knowledge and information has gone into these trips and I recommend them highly."

Carolyn Anderson , Middleboro, MA - "FABULOUS trip. Deb Haugen was a great guide. Her urban sketch class was a lovely addition to the itinerary."

Marilee Marter , Monument, CO - "The hands-on workshops were so much fun! The balance of activities and free time was perfect, and our tour leader was the best! Local tour guide, Sumada, was very kind and well-informed. Every day was well-planned and easily manageable for all the guests."

Sandy Rogers , Henderson, NV - "This was my 4th Craft Tour. They just get better each time. Great itinerary, full of fun crafts. Best travel manager, Alice, by far. Awesome accommodation. On site travel manager and bus driver very helpful. I use a walker and the crew made using it very easy. I will always recommend Craft Tours to my friends and quilt club members. Thanks again."

Sally Turco , Cherhill, Alberta - "This was the first tour I have taken. I was totally thrilled with the care, service and attention to detail that was offered on this tour. From our arrival to our departure, our tour guide made every effort to meet our needs and answer questions, no matter how trivial. A truly enjoyable experience!"

Sara Borr , Norristown, PA - "Having traveled with Craftours a number of times I was sure the trip would be great and it was."

Frieda Toback , Boynton Beach, FL - "Very enjoyable tour made better by the outstanding leadership of Mary Ellen."

Cindy Frederick , Guernsey, WY - "This trip was really well planned and so educational and fun."

Peggy Carter , Jenkinsburg, GA - "It was an experience I'll never forget. The hotels were great, and so were the crafts. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire trip. Our travel manager, Holly, did a fabulous job on keeping us informed, hydrated, and happy."

Susan Richards , Saint Louis Park - "The staff and guides were great. The hotels were wonderful. I would say that the arts and crafts part was lacking in substance and was more about shopping then learning a new craft. In fact, even the expo was more about shopping than seeing different types of batiks. The batik school and going to the batik factory and making the batiks with the stamps was very educational."

Kay Taylor , Belleville, WA - "All the planned activities were excellent. Our local guide was full of information and the locals at all the activities were very friendly and attentive to our needs."

Barba Drebenstedt , Davenport, IA - "This trip far exceeded my expectations in every way. The Craftours staff went beyond the extra mile to make this a friendly, knowledgeable and fun experience. I would highly recommend Craftours to anyone looking for a fun and unique experience in the world of crafts. I'd like to take another trip in the near future."

Dafna Gatmon , Davis, California - "I loved being able to do a trip with Ali Edwards and taking her workshops. She was wonderful."

Bonnie Hunter , - "I’ve been honored and blessed to have been traveling with Craftours over the past several years as a teacher, lecturer and as a travel manager. The attention to detail and organization of every aspect of the tours from travel logistics, to lodging, activities and highlights are unsurpassed. Be it a cruise, a land tour or other excursion, be prepared for phenomenal itineraries, first class accommodation, knowledgeable and engaging tour guides, and even fabulous and fun bus drivers (land tour) who will give you the trip of a life time. This is the stuff that travel dreams are made of. These are memories that will last a life time. The folks I have met while traveling with Craftours have become friends for life. There are Sew Many Places to see! There are Sew Many Places to discover!"

Bali Trip Itinerary

All packed and ready to go? Woop woop! It’s time to leave all those worries behind and head to the airport. We’ll be waiting for you in Bali at Denpasar International Airport with a sign with your name on it. Like all our other group tours, the first day is all about settling in and finding your bearings. We suggest aiming to arrive in the middle of the day to give you time to freshen up, soak up some sun around the pool or just catch up on some sleep. This evening we’ll head out for dinner and drinks at one of our favourite spots!

We begin all our trips with a chilled welcome chat where our team will be answering any questions and setting the expectations for the trip ahead. After brekky, we’ll head to a couple of the most beautiful temples in the region including the famous Tanah Lot. We’ll finish the day with a sunset Bintang (local beer) on the beach in Canggu before hitting the dancefloor.

It’s time to head off the tourist track and up to the most beautiful rice paddies in all of Bali. The whole Munduk region is known by the locals as a bit of an untrampled hidden gem. We stop for lunch at a local Warung (local family restaurant). After lunch we head to one of Bali’s best waterfalls before arriving at our hidden little accommodation tucked away in the countryside. Let’s take a dip in the infinity pool before finding our zen with some sunset yoga 🙏🏼

Rise and shine, it’s the day that most of you have been dreaming about! We cruise the north shores of Bali by traditional outrigger boat in search of wild spinner dolphins. It really is one of those ‘pinch me’ moments as you’re sitting waiting for them to appear and before you know it they jump from the water right in front of your eyes… just magical!

After spending a few days up in the mountains you’ll be grateful for some time to go wandering around the boutique shops and quirky little cafes of Ubud. We’ve found a nice balance between free time, must-see experiences and of course the opportunity to have a drink and get your dancing shoes on! As a group, we’ll take you to the Sacred Monkey Forest and flex those culinary skills with a local authentic cooking class. *If you wanted to do the Mt Batur Volcano trek you’ll need to skip the night out as it’s a 2/3am pickup (not included).

After brekky we say goodbye to Ubud and hello to the Gili Islands. We take the fast ferry to Gili Trawangan, the most popular of the 3 islands. From the moment you arrive, the island vibes kick in and you’ll be eager to either go for a wander or sip coconuts on the beach, your call! Our time on Gili T will no doubt be a highlight for most with many sunsets, palm trees and you guessed it… turtles awaiting us. If you don’t find your happy place on land, just wait until your dip your head into the crystal clear waters during our snorkelling trip.

Finishing in Uluwatu was always the dream ending to an incredible trip. Uluwatu not only owns the most beautiful beaches in Bali but it’s tucked away from the big cities. We’ll learn to surf in the coolest and most trendy area of Indonesia. Our centrally located accommodation is a short walk to Padang Padang Beach and some of Bali’s best beach clubs and surf breaks.

It’s not going to be easy but today is checkout day and the time to say goodbye after an un-Bali-evable 12 days. I’m sure you’ll be reminiscing over breakfast and trying to piece all those happy emotions together before you set off on your journey home or to your next destination. Just like when you arrived, Denpasar International Airport is where you’ll be aiming to fly out. We suggest leaving around lunchtime at the earliest to give you a more chilled departure. The final day doesn’t have any plans so you can leave anytime that works best for you!

  • Extend your stay at our perfectly located accommodation in Uluwatu
  • Take a day tour or overnight trip to Nusa Penida from Sanur
  • Squeeze in the popular tourist Kecak Fire Dance
  • Jump on a surf camp and take things to the next level
  • Book yourself into Uluwatu’s many co-living/co-working spots
  • Jump on a fitness or yoga class in Uluwatu
  • Slide in the DMs and ask the team for further ideas

Where We Stay

Trip Preparation

Do I need a visa?

For most travellers, Bali is a very easy country to visit with a simple 'Visa on Arrival' process. There are over 40 countries eligible to travel to Bali through the VOA scheme, and the visa can be obtained on arrival for a small fee. Be sure to do your research as each country/passport can have different rules. It's your responsibility to ensure you've ticked all the necessary boxes to enter Bali hassle-free.

* It’s important you do check your own visa eligibility as we are not visa experts and the information above is general in nature. We’ve also put together an ‘Unofficial’ Visa Guide for Asia & Australia .

What vaccinations do I need?

Similar to visas, we are not medical professionals and would hate to give you false or misleading information. We recommend you book an appointment with your doctor or local pharmacy to discuss your travel plans and what precautions you need to be aware of. They will provide up-to-date official guidance and will no doubt have your vaccination and immunisation history on file. All destinations and areas we travel to are generally low risk but best to be on the safe side. Click here for a useful resource provided by the UK NHS website .

What about COVID-19 travel restrictions in Bali?

It's always a good idea to check whether your destination or airline requires you to be COVID-19 vaccinated or tested to travel. It's your responsibility to stay up-to-date and ensure you join us on the Bali tour without any issues. Click here for a useful resource provided by the UK government .

Is travel insurance compulsory?

Travel insurance is an essential stage of your trip preparation. It’s not only a smart idea to get covered but it will also give your loved ones peace of mind. We actually require all customers to show proof of coverage at the beginning of the tour. We’ll need to see your name, area of cover and dates that the insurance is valid. It’s a good idea to get this sorted ASAP to ensure you’re covered for all eventualities.

Will I receive a packing list?

You sure will, once your trip is confirmed you’ll receive a confirmation email with a bunch of useful information including an ‘Arrival Guide’. Within this guide, you’ll find a packing list, safety and cultural information and some useful tips to prepare for your trip.

Should I bring a suitcase or backpack?

Most people do prefer travelling with a backpack and it’s generally easier when moving around but it’s not uncommon for some travellers to bring a suitcase. We suggest bringing something you are comfortable with carrying and lugging around. It’s also important to bring a small day bag, something that can hold enough for an overnight trip or those travel essentials. Click here to read a blog we wrote on this, ‘Backpack vs Suitcase - What is best for travelling?’

Is there a limit to my luggage weight?

We suggest not going crazy with the packing and keeping it simple. Try and bring loose/floaty clothing that isn’t too thick or heavy. No need to bring heels or walking boots. We limit the luggage to 20kg per person. Best to leave the kitchen sink at home 🤣

Are there laundry services on tour?

Throughout the trip, there will be a few opportunities to do laundry but we always suggest bringing enough underwear and essentials for the full trip. Your Group Leader will let you know the best time to do laundry but, this usually doesn’t happen until 4 or 5 days into the tour.

Do I need to bring a towel?

At all the hotels we stay there will be towels provided to be used for showering and freshening up. We suggest buying a microfibre towel or large sarong as they are small and dry fast for use on the beach and swimming.

How much spending money do I need?

Once you've booked your flights, paid off your trip and got some solid travel insurance you'll be all set for that Bali adventure. We suggest bringing no less than £300/$400 but this should be the bare minimum. Some people can spend less but the average will be looking at around £400-500/$500-700 to cover shopping, drinks, extra meals and anything else you fancy treating yourself to... maybe a few massages!?

What's the best way to manage my money?

We always recommend having a few different options when managing your money while on the road. Having your everyday bank/ATM card with you as a backup is always a good idea, but we strongly suggest signing up for a travel/currency card. Most of these cards can be managed through an easy easy-to-use app. There are ATMs throughout the trip and we suggest grabbing some local currency when you arrive at the airport.

Will there be a Whatsapp group?

There sure will be, 2 weeks before the trip you’ll receive a final email with some useful information to help with your arrival. This includes a link to a private Whatsapp group for the tour date that you’ll be travelling on. It’s a great place to get chatting with the rest of the people on the tour and also your Group Leader. If you’ve not already, click this link and join the ‘Feel Free Family’ Facebook Group . The FB community is the ideal place to discuss how things work with past and future travellers. Add yourself to the group and make a post asking who else has booked or thinking about booking the same date as you.

Your Arrival

When should I arrive on Day 1?

We suggest aiming to arrive during the middle of the 1st day, it’s not essential but it will give you time to freshen up before we head out for dinner and drinks. You’ll be grateful for that little extra time to relax, soak up some afternoon sun or just go for a wander and explore the local area.

Can I arrive a day or 2 early?

Absolutely! We actually recommend arriving a day or 2 early to give you more time to recharge and enjoy a bit of ‘me time’ before the tour begins. There might be experiences on your bucket list that we don’t include on the trip, this is the perfect time to fit them in.

Will I get an airport pickup?

Anyone arriving on Day 1 or who decides to book pre-tour accommodation with us will be picked up by our trusted drivers when they land. They’ll be standing waiting at the airport with a Feel Free Travel sign so you’ll have no issues finding them 🙌🏼

Which airport should I fly into?

You’ll be glad to know there is only 1 big international airport in Bali and it’s Denpasar International Airport ‘DPS’.

Where at the airport do I get my ‘Visa on Arrival’?

The visa on arrival desk is easy to find and sign posted as ‘VOA’ and located just before the immigration desks. You’ll disembark the aircraft and just follow the signs for the baggage reclaim until you approach immigration. This is where you’ll pay for your VOA and get your ticket for 30 days in paradise 🌴

How do I know where to meet at the airport?

We’ll send everyone up-to-date arrival instructions via email 2 weeks before the trip with exactly where to meet the driver. Once you get picked up we’ll get you back to the hotel and checked in. If your flight is running late, don’t worry, we’ll be tracking your progress on Google and will be waiting for you to arrive.

What’s the plan for Day 1?

The first day is the ‘Arrival Day’, there isn’t a huge amount planned. It’s the perfect day to relax, catch some sun and get your bearings. In the evening it’s time to meet your new travel family as we’ll be taking you all out to one of our favourite spots for dinner and chilled drinks.

After the Trip

What time does the tour finish?

All our tours finish on the morning of the final day, this will give you plenty of time to get back to the airport ready for that flight home or onto your next destination.

What happens after my tour?

It really depends from group to group… sometimes we’ll have a whole bunch of people hanging out once the tour has finished, travelling for days, weeks or even months together. But in others, you’ll have many people going their separate ways. As the trip unfolds, you’ll soon learn about each other's travel plans and share ideas for what adventures lie ahead. The hardest part is saying your goodbyes and giving your last big hugs to the people leaving straight after the trip ends.

Can I get help with return airport transfers?

You sure can, our Group Leaders are available throughout the trip to chat about your onward travel plans. They will be there to offer help and assistance when it comes to booking flights, taxis, buses, and ferries. It’s always a good idea to get your flights booked before you arrive, including any internal flights after your tour.

When should I book my return flight?

We always suggest booking your return flight a bit later on the final day. This will give you plenty of time to get back to the airport and also enough time to really say your goodbyes and leave without any stress or worries. The airport is approximately 45mins to 1 hour from the hotel in Uluwatu.

Can I stay longer and extend my trip?

You sure can, we don’t offer the option to extend your stay, but our awesome Group Leaders are eager to help and support your onward travel plans. You’ll no doubt get ideas from other group members as the trip unfolds, so keep those ideas to yourself until you meet the group.

I’m doing more than 1 trip, how do I book my connecting flight?

We suggest booking those connecting flights soon after booking your big international flights. We’ve actually written a blog on this to help when planning those flights between Asia. Click here to read more .

Do I get help with onward travel?

Whether you’re on a short break from work or a slightly longer backpacking adventure, our Group Leaders will help with everything from return airport transfers to giving you a bunch of ideas for the rest of your time in South East Asia and beyond.

Bali Trip FAQs

Is there wifi on tour.

Almost all the places we stay on tour have free WIFI allowing you to stay connected with friends and family back home. There are certain places we visit that don’t, but we will always give you a heads up in advance so that you can prepare and let your loved ones at home know you may be unreachable.

Can I travel solo/come alone?

Absolutely! Our trips are built for solo travellers, and believe us… sharing new experiences with a group of new friends is one of the best things you can do. A large majority of the people that travel with us are 1st-time travellers doing it alone, so don’t worry, you’ll never be alone with us.

What’s the average age of people on these trips?

Our trips are specifically targeted towards individuals who are young at heart. If you’re between the ages of 18-39 and keen on a new adventure, you’re welcome to join us. We’ve found that the average age of our travellers is 22-32, we also get young travellers straight out of school as well as working professionals in their mid to late 30s.

How big are the group sizes?

We keep our group sizes small, with an average of 12-16 people per group, so that everyone gets to know each other and experience things at an enjoyable pace.

What’s included in the price?

We include most of the big ticket items like accommodation, activities, local experiences, secret stops, local guides, a western group leader and a bunch of meals. We also include an airport pickup on arrival!

What should I expect from the included meals?

You should expect almost all your breakfasts to be included to allow us to get the best out of each day. You’ll also get a few lunches on day trips and the odd dinner. We try and find a good balance between including meals and giving you the flexibility to eat what you fancy.

Do you cater for specific dietary/allergy requirements?

We make every effort to prepare for all dietary requirements and will do our best to support you during mealtime. Please provide clear information during the booking form and chat with your Group Leader during the first few days.

What’s not included?

You’ll just need to sort your international flights , travel insurance , visas and spending money 🙌🏼

Do we stay in hostels or hotels?

The accommodation on our trips is something we do better than anyone else, and our tours definitely wouldn’t be the same without the awesome places we stay. We’ve handpicked these places to give you the perfect balance of comfort, security and convenience. We really do love where we stay, and so do all our happy travellers 😍

Who will I share a room with?

All solo travellers will pair up with other travellers of the same sex… girls with girls & guys with guys. If you are travelling with a friend, let us know, and we can put you together… same if you are travelling as a couple, we will arrange a double room where possible. You can upgrade during the booking form if you’d like your own room.

Can I combine more than 1 trip together?

It’s common for our travellers to combine 2 or more of our trips. Our trips have been specifically programmed to allow you to do just that. You can often finish 1 trip on the same day another trip is just starting. After all, flight tickets are not cheap, you might as well maximise your experience if you have the time!

How do I book?

Booking your trip couldn’t be easier, find a trip that takes your fancy, pick a date, reserve your spot with a deposit and get that flight booked…

We always recommend reserving your spot before booking your flight. When our trips are full… unfortunately, they are FULL 😬 Check out our ’How it Works’ page for more information on booking your trip!!

This all seems too good to be true, how do I know it’s legit?

This is a question we recently added to our FAQs as we hear it time and time again, so we wanted to give you all a few ways to verify who we are;

  • We are a UK registered company No.10549017
  • Read our reviews on Facebook , Google & Trustpilot
  • Join our Facebook Group ‘Feel Free Family’
  • Follow our journey on Instagram

How to plan a trip to Bali, Indonesia

As the world’s largest archipelagic nation, Indonesia encompasses thousands of geographically diverse destinations, but for culture, nature, adventure and relaxation, Bali stands out.

The tropical Indonesian island of Bali has enticed travellers for over a century with its coralline seas, sacred volcanoes, mist-shrouded lakes and vibrant living heritage. A favoured holiday destination for antipodeans, Bali's irresistible beaches beckon backpackers, surfers and families alike. The south-coast areas of Seminyak, Kuta and Canggu, close to the airport, are where most visitors flock to, but it’s even better when you roam a little further.

Flowers in the foreground with rice paddies and a mountain in the background

Best for: culture Straddling a series of river valleys at the base of Bali’s central highlands, Ubud was once a cluster of villages with an eclectic art colony that drew writers, painters and filmmakers from distant lands. Today, its museums house sprawling collections by the island’s most revered artists and dozens of small galleries exhibit contemporary works, such as Purga Artspace , attached to the endearing library cafe, Littletalks Ubud . Listen out for the exuberant polyphony of gamelan (traditional ensemble music) emanating nightly from the temples. Ubud also hosts a celebration of contemporary artists, Ubud Open Studios , and Southeast Asia’s largest annual literary event, Ubud Writers and Readers Festival .

Be sure to visit one of Bali’s best independent bookstores, Ganesha Bookshop , and one of the nation’s leading traditional textile conservationists, Threads of Life . Delve further into Ubud’s cultural past and present and see a host of archaeological treasures on a walking tour led by Ubud Story Walks . After a culture-packed day, refresh in a secluded bungalow and the natural stone pool at Rumah Semanggi . For a culturally immersive stay, Gayatri and Honeymoon Guesthouse both preserve Bali’s ornate architectural style, while an edifying introduction to Indonesia’s diverse regional cuisines can be found at Warung Pulau Kelapa , Nusantara and Hujan Locale .

Flowers in the foreground with a Hindunese temple on a lake in the background

Best for: nature The crisp air of Bedugul, a horticultural district in the undulating hills of central Bali, is a welcome reprieve from the dense humidity of the south. Overlooking Lake Beratan — said to have been Bali’s largest lake until an earthquake split it into three — lies Indonesia’s biggest botanical garden, Kebun Raya Bali. Established in the late 1950s, it contains 2,400 species from across the archipelago, including a giant ficus thought to be over 100 years old whose towering, Tolkienesque roots have tangled into awe-inspiring arches. A stroll east past ancient cycads is one of the island’s most picturesque picnic spots: a grassy slope fringed by the saffron blooms of flame trees before the duck-egg blue lake beyond.

Visitors can wake to this view at Kebun Raya Bali's onsite Guesthouse Etnobotani or take a 20-minute drive along the northeastern shore of neighbouring Lake Buyan to Giriwood , a boutique hotel with villas enveloped by the Wanagiri forest. Around one mile north is the trailhead to Banyu Wana Amertha, an ensemble of four exquisite waterfalls. When it’s time to refuel, the bebek timbungan —   tender, aromatic duck cooked in bamboo — at Secret Garden Village is a delicious option.

Villages along a coastline with a mountain in the background

Best for: adventure Against the backdrop of majestic Mount Agung, Bali’s tallest and most sacred volcano, Amed on the island’s northeast coast is as enchanting below the water as it is above. A string of seven fishing villages fanning out from black sand shores, its usually calm seas and fertile volcanic soils have created a haven for weird and wondrous creatures. From otherworldly nudibranchs (soft-bodied marine molluscs) to mind-boggling mimic octopuses, the critters lurking in Amed’s silty depths have secured its reputation as a global hotspot for macro diving — a style of diving named after the kind of lens photographers use to capture such colourful marine life. Meanwhile, just over nine miles northwest in the shallow waters of Tulamben lies the coral-draped skeleton of the USAT   Liberty , one of the most accessible wreck dive sites in the world.

If you prefer snorkelling over scuba diving, keep an eye out for hawksbill sea turtles gracefully gliding over the reefs fringing the coast. One of the healthiest reefs is just over 300ft west of The Kampung , two collections of charming wooden seafront bungalows and a spacious villa for up to ten guests. You can order in hearty Indonesian meals from Warung Agung (try the fragrant pepes ikan — fish steamed in a banana leaf) or sample the superb Spanish omelette from Zaitun.

Aerial view of a white-sand beach with traditional Balinese boats anchored

Best for: relaxation One of the island’s oldest tourism areas, Sanur’s gentle charm and relatively minimal traffic make it popular among visitors seeking Bali’s more serene side. In contrast to the southwest’s barrelling swells, Sanur’s southeast coast is an almost constantly calm tidal lagoon protected by distant reefs. At sunrise and sunset when the wind is low, the lagoon glows like a vast mirror, glassy and luminescent, reflecting the celestial hues of the changing sky. On clear dusks and dawns, the silvery silhouette of Mount Agung soars above the horizon.

A paved path — the first beachfront walk in Bali — stretches across the sand from Sanur Beach to Mertasari Beach around four miles south. Recently doubled to designate pedestrian and cycle lanes, it’s lined with clothing stalls, cafes, seafood restaurants and resorts, such as the boutique Tandjung Sari . Established in the early 1960s, the luxury heritage hotel has an open-air restaurant that serves refined Indonesian dishes and international favourites beneath the curving limbs of towering trees adorned with lanterns. Families looking for a relaxing getaway will enjoy the miniature water park at Prama Sanur Beach Bali and appreciate the creative comfort food at Soul on the Beach and Shotgun Social .

Wanderlands Bali - 8 Days

I had such an amazing time on this tour! I am so happy I decided to book, the tour was organised so well and all the spots we went to were perfect- restaurants and outdoor adventure spots too. I was so lucky to have many people in my group who I got along with so well and will definitely remain friends with. Our tour group leader Zio was wonderful, so fun and made everyone feel so included. Overall, Bali was a dream destination and everything was exactly how I had hoped

Bali Bucket List Original 10 Day Tour

This was my first time coming to South East Asia and it was a super trip from start to finish. I joined as a solo traveller in a group of 7. Food - hotel breakfasts were surprisingly good - often a wide selection of buffet or a la carte options. Every venue we visited for lunch/dinner had a good mix of western style food and traditional Indonesian cuisine. The trip itinerary was very well paced - it definitely felt like we made the most of our time. A real benefit was having all transportation so efficiently sorted for the group, this was a value add which would be extremely difficult to replicate as a solo traveller not on a guided tour. The whole trip worked like clockwork with us being transferred seamlessly between big boats, small boats, 4x4s and taxis. Accommodation - Very impressed with the quality of each hotel we stayed at. As a group of 7, we had some fantastic times with the rooftop infinity pool to ourselves at the Maxone rooftop pool and again on Lembongan island Guide - Ali made sure everyone was having a good time, flexible to adapt the plan to suit the group, excellent company and available 24/7. Ali was really great at taking photos and brought his own drone along to get some amazing action shots and aerial views of the group. Thank you Ali!! The trip involves quite a bit of physical activity: hiking up mountains, surfing and snorkelling. I booked via Adventure Guys which gave it a 1/5 for physical - but I think it should be higher! Highlights for me: the beautiful bike ride around Gili T island and swimming with turtles. One thing I would recommend to anyone is arriving a day or two before to acclimatise to the timezone and be well rested for the start of the trip.

7 Days Bali and Gili Islands Epic Experience

What a wonderful way to explore Bali and its culture from monkey forest, rice terraces to tasting coffee and local fruits. Still not a Durian fan but fun watching the group tasting and react to it. The snorkeling in Gili was crazy. Hand feeding turtles while snorkeling is something you won’t forget and the white beaches and colorful fish make this the best place I have ever snorkeled. The Hotels and staff was amazing at every place we stayed but I need to give special thanks to our guide Yustus…. he was professional , organized, knowledgeable and just fun to hang with. Our driver Pepen was like our 2nd tour guide always helping out. This was a stress free trip because of the way they worked together

7 Day Island Hopper Learn to Surf Adventure

I had such a blast on this trip that I extended to 8 days! My guide Kajsa kept everyone so well informed with clear and concise plan updates at appropriate points so everyone’s was always clear on what wasn’t going to happen at any given point. She was also personable and easy to get along with which made everyone relax, come out of their shells and get to know eachother quickly. Together we bonded as a group and between individuals and it was a fantastic way to learn a new skill whilst seeing so much of Indonesia with someone in the know how and with individuals from all over the world. Overall a hugely enriching process and coming in with zero surf experience I was able not to surf a hard longboard for 3 consecutive days! Would highly recommended to anyone keen for adventure and to learn :)

Reviews of small group tours to bali.

Good tour with decent accommodations. our tour leader were also great
Bali was amazing , good food good mates
I really enjoyed this tour, it was the first time I had travelled through any tour company and I thought it was extremely well run. Our tour guide Hendri was incredible, he made us laugh, encouraged us to push ourselves outside of our comfort zones and was available to help day or night. Hendri went out of his way to make sure that we all had the best time and always felt safe while travelling. We had one particularly difficult group member, but Hendri dealt with this without a sweat. He happily got up during the night to come to this persons aid and even swapped rooms with them because they weren’t happy. Our group became really close during our trip and I believe that is a testament to Hendri’s welcoming and light hearted nature and his ability to provide fun and engaging activities for all the group to join in on. After my experience on the intro travel to Bali tour I will definitely be looking to book another tour through intro again!

Welcome to Yogyakarta!

At Yogyakarta International Airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your sweet hotel in Central Java's heartland in about 1½ hours.

Start the day's program with a visit to the Sultan's Palace, also known as the Kraton, which is located in the center of the city and was founded in 1755.

Look out for the ornate reception halls as well as the large open-air pendopos (Indonesian pavilions), specifically built so that the Sultan could listen to gamelan (native orchestra) performances. There is also an air-conditioned room containing the desk at which the ninth sultan planned the overthrow of the Dutch. Something particularly curious, or just plain odd, is the painting of the eighth sultan on the day of his circumcision!

The next stop is Tamansari (also known as the Water Castle), situated just 250 meters from the Sultan's Palace. It was built in 1758 by the prince, with the sole purpose of being used as a 'place of pleasure' by the prince and his harem. The prince would sit in his tower, enjoying watching his harem frolic in the water, and send for any one of them whom he fancied at the time, who would enter the prince's quarters, where he would enjoy his princely ways with them.

Lunch will be served at a local restaurant before we return you to your resort.

A sunrise excursion to the 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist temple compound at Borobudur promises to be a tour highlight. It's the biggest Buddhist temple in the world!

A UNESCO site and one of the world's premier Buddhist places of worship, Borobudur's main temple aligns with Buddhist cosmology with its six square platforms topped by three circular platforms. Some 2,600 relief panels and 52 Buddha statues decorate the platforms; another 72 Buddha statues surround the temple's main dome. This massive edifice required more than 75 years to construct, and 60,000 cubic meters of stone.

Abandoned in the early 10th century because of political upheaval, Borobudur lay neglected until its rediscovery by an Englishman in 1814. As we watch in silence as the sun rises over the temples, we contemplate the enterprise and devotion that created this awe-inspiring complex. A light breakfast is then provided at the Plataran Resort.

We continue to the village of Candirejo, where you can learn about local arts and crafts. Following your tour, we'll return to your hotel in Yogyakarta. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure.

Pack your bags and say goodbye to Yogyakarta for a moment. Upon landing at Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali and clearing arrival formalities, you will be greeted and transferred to your hotel in Ubud by private air-conditioned vehicle (the drive takes about 1½ hours).

Located in the foothills of Gianyar Regency and surrounded by ravines, dense forests, and picturesque paddy fields, Ubud is one of the most attractive towns in Bali and a must-see for anyone visiting the island.

Since the early 20th century, Ubud has been a muse for European artists, and today, you can delve into the studios and galleries of several influential pioneers. The Balinese painters' studios are equally captivating, showcasing a renaissance in Balinese art by blending traditional approaches with European techniques. The Museum of Modern Balinese Arts is a must-visit today.

Other trip highlights include Batubulan (meaning "stone moon"), Celuk, and Mas, where stone carvings and the intricate details of silverwork and woodcarvings will both surprise and astonish you.

Don't miss the lively Ubud market, a delightful way to spend time amidst batik fabrics, unique trinkets, souvenirs, and the enticing aromas of spices and fruits. Remember, haggling is the name of the game here—those seasoned market vendors can be quite formidable!

Embark on an enriching journey today as you connect with the vibrant Balinese culture, immersing yourself in the daily lives of local families. Capture picturesque moments on your way to Subak Guliang, a charming traditional farming village at the heart of the island.

Venture further to the ancient Hindu Besakih temple, revered as the 'mother temple of Bali,' with a history spanning over 1,000 years. Nestled 1,000 meters high on the volcanic slopes of Mount Agung, Bali's majestic peak, witness pilgrims offering prayers, potentially in multitudes.

Conclude today's journey with a visit to Klungkung Palace, also known as Puri Agung Semarapura. Explore the well-preserved Kertagosa Pavilion, a remarkable showcase of traditional Balinese architecture. This pavilion, once a Hall of Justice, displays artifacts such as the Kamasan Paintings, narrating famous Hindu legends across the ages.

Prepare for an adventurous journey through five distinct and authentic Balinese terrains, where dust and mud become your companions! Embark on a quad bike adventure traversing rice fields, plantations, jungle trails, mud tracks, and two traditional villages in Desa Kerta, Payangan. Our fleet boasts new, top-of-the-line quad bikes with significant engine capacity, 4x4 capability, full automation, and power steering for a seamless off-road experience. The independent rear suspension ensures a smooth ride on varied terrain.

Operating these quad bikes is a breeze, but if you prefer, you can opt to ride as a passenger with a fellow group member or one of our experienced guides. Every tour is accompanied by skilled guides, and to enhance your experience, groups are divided based on driving skill, ensuring that each adventure is tailored to your preferences.

Today you would head to a Beach hotel at the Jimbaran Bay after a lovey and lazy morning in the hotel in Ubud.

Jimbaran Bay in Bali is a beautiful place known for its stunning beaches and seafood restaurants. The beach with its golden sand and calm waters makes it a great spot for swimming and relaxation. Having a seafood dinner with the sound of the waves in the background, or taking an evening stroll along the beach under the moonlight. You would create romantic and memorable moments with your sweetheart here.

Relish a leisurely morning, you will start a two-hour private cruise adventure at the renowned Jimbaran Bay.

Following a safety briefing from your captain, embark on a serene journey along the tranquil waters. Approach the Uluwatu Temple perched high on the cliffs. Participate in a traditional Balinese blessing ceremony with your captain, placing a floating Canang Sari into the ocean.

Enjoy the beauty of the Indian Ocean as the sun sets over Jimbaran Bay. Pause at the peak of the sunset, taking in the color-changing sky and evening light

Sail away from Bali to Nusa Lembongan Island on a catamaran. Aboard the catamaran, complimentary soft drinks and refreshments are served as you travel from mainland Bali to Nusa Lembongan.

Upon arrival at the Waka Beach Club in Lembongan, enjoy a delicious BBQ lunch, which includes salads, steaks, and fresh fish. After lunch, you could join an optional guided tour of this small unspoiled island, home to seaweed farmers.

The catamaran sailing cruise offers an array of water sports activities, including banana boat rides, pool volleyball, snorkeling, and semi-submersible coral viewing. Other water sports options include a parasailing adventure, which would take you high above the water for a bird's-eye view of the island, and scuba diving with the in-house dive team.

And when the day is done, the catamaran sails leisurely back to Benoa Harbor, arriving as the sun sets on another glorious day in Bali.

Free arrangements today to let you fully relax or explore the neighborhood at your own pace. It is the best time to have a spa in your luxury hotel or sit around on the white sand of the beach. Enjoy the last moments in Bali!

Say goodbye to Bali. Your guide will meet you for your airport transfer to catch your flight home.

We hope this delightful Bali & Java Honeymoon makes your romantic memories and your love unforgettable!

12 bali tours

We made a private tour through South China in January 2024. Altogether Chengdu was the highlight. We had an incredible day at Emeishan. In Chengdu our guidewas Helen. She was the diamond of all. Speaking fluently English, full of interesting stories, laughing and talking all the time. We missed her the rest of our tour. We highly recommend to go to Chengdu for 3 days when visiting China, especially with Helen.

12 bali tours

Other highlights are too many to mention but here are a few Ken taking us to the Terracotta Warriors and our food tour in Xian was amazing,

Our day volunteering at the Panda Base was truly unforgettable. Helen, our guide, provided us with invaluable insights about Chengdu and the pandas, enriching our tour with her knowledge and expertise. We're grateful to Helen for accompanying us throughout the day and showcasing the highlights of China.

We had a booking with China Highlights through Silvia Ye who guarenteed a perfect organisation. In Chengdu our guide was Helen. She was the diamond of all. Speaking fluently English, full of interesting stories, laughing and talking all the time. We missed her the rest of our tour. We highly recommend to go to Chengdu for 3 days when visiting China, especially with Helen.

We traveled to China during the Chinese new year and we had Kris as our guide and he is simply knowledgeable, helpful and great.

We visited Guilin for 2 days and stayed in the Guilin Waterfall hotel. Guilin was absolutely beautiful! Our guide, William, was very knowledgeable and kind! He taught us so much about Guilin and the surrounding area! We really enjoyed trying the specialty rice noodles of Guilin. Our highlight was the Li river cruise.

Amazing tour and the guide Mr. 贺霄 was very accommodating with our needs and request as we have bought our 2 years old with us. Well explained for all the place we visited. Any additional cost were informed well ahead and didn't felt any pressure if we opt not to go for additional detour. The trip was relaxing/ laid back/no rushing with zero shopping!

We had an amazing to China. Our tour guide Martin in Shanghai was super knowledgeable, caring and very flexible with our itinerary. When my wife got sick in the Shanghai, he was able to arrange an English-speaking doctor on the spot and took us to the clinic. On top of the that, Martin and the driver stayed with us at the clinic for the whole duration and drove us back to the hotel afterwards. His genuine concern for our welfare and willingness to go the extra mile did not go unnoticed, and we were deeply touched by his kindness and compassion.

Guilin, but mostly Yangshuo was at the tail end of our China adventure so there was a lot to live up to. Having a guide like Gary Wei meant that our trip ended on a high! We arrived in Guilin very late from an 11 hour train journey. Gary met us with gifts of fruit, sweet bread and cakes which was so unexpected and thoughtful.Gary's knowledge of the area was exceptional and his attention to us the same. He really took our children under his wing - even tuning in to annoying sibling rivalry and managing to keep the peace very well! Gary was our personal photographer at times and even our Taiji instructor, making a beautiful video of us all doing Taiji in a scenic setting :)The cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is definitely worth taking and we enjoyed our few nights in the area, riding bikes along the river, doing a cooking class and enjoying the scenery

Bali Tours & Holidays

Tourists with their guide at a temple in Bali

There are 17,000 islands in the Indonesian archipelago, but none shine brighter than Bali.

From the green slopes of Mt Batur to the Bintang bodegas on Seminyak’s main party strip, Bali is a volcano-dotted, beach-fringed paradise that’s serene and sensational by turns. But beyond the mega-resorts and yoga studios, you'll find the essence of Bali in the temples, out-of-the-way mountain towns, local markets and lazy fishing villages. Our Bali tours are about  diving the impossibly blue waters off Lovina, being welcomed into a Balinese family home , soaking in the Banja hot springs, or sipping smoothies in Ubud’s cafes . As always, when it comes to paradise, the hardest bit is choosing what to do first.

Learn more about Bali

Local culture.

Between the 12th and 20th centuries, Bali has often been treated as a pawn in the games of kings, rajahs and generals. More often than not, its fate has been closely tied to neighbouring Lombok with fierce battles between the two islands over the centuries as different rulers vied for regional dominance. This history of varied occupation can be seen in Bali today, with elements of Hinduism and Islam present in modern Balinese society. However, there is no historical animosity between the religions, or even between the islands of Lombok and Bali.

One of the defining moments in Bali’s history took place in the 16th century when the collapse of the Majapahit dynasty encouraged the spread of Islam from the surrounding states into the Javanese kingdom. Rather than live under Islamic rule, many Hindu elites chose to escape to Bali. These elites included many artists, dancers, musicians, actors and court-supported artisans, as well as some more artistically inclined priests. The result was an intense proliferation of cultural arts across Bali, no doubt inspired by rich Balinese folklore featuring epic battles of good and evil, gods and mortals. This reputation persists today, with many travellers falling in love with the island’s intricate temple carvings, dance performances, colourful sarongs and handicrafts.

When you combine a love of arts with world-class beaches and deliciously fiery sambals, it’s no surprise Bali’s tourism industry is soaring. It’s not unusual for someone to ask you whether this is your second, third or fourth visit to the island. Many locals rely on tourism to some extent, either by working as tour operators or running hotels, yoga studios, massage parlours, bars, cafes or restaurants.

The destination’s popularity with  Australians  means there’s a gradual cultural creep in larger cities like Seminyak, where Melbourne-style cafes and international clothing labels are particularly popular. If you escape the resorts and head further north from Denpasar, you’re more likely to encounter traditional warungs (eateries) and villages untouched by tourism sprawl.

One last word of advice: always watch where you put your feet. Locals will traditionally place small offerings on the footpaths outside their homes or businesses up to three times a day. 83.5% of the population identifies as Hindu and religion plays a large part in Balinese life. In fact, there is a small religious ceremony associated with just about every aspect of Balinese culture, whether it’s the beginning of a soccer game, celebrating the full moon or cleaning the house.

Food and drink

At first glance it might seem difficult to pinpoint Bali’s exact culinary identity. The mishmash of Indonesian and pan-Asian influences means you’re likely to come across menus that sometimes feel part Thai, Malaysian, Indian and Vietnamese. But no matter what you order, the food will always be fresh and bursting with flavour. Dishes are typically made fresh each day, with curries and pastes prepared by hand using traditional methods.

The most authentic food in Bali is usually found streetside at eateries called warungs. Warungs are common in every village and city, and a good place for a quick feed on a budget. Many will specialise in a small menu of popular local dishes.

Top foods to try in Bali

Babi guling:  This is slow cooking Balinese-style. A whole pig is stuffed with chilli, turmeric, ginger, galangal, shallots, garlic, coriander seeds and aromatic leaves and rotated over an open fire. This dish is commonly seen at celebrations.

Satay:  Sometimes spelt ‘sate’ on local menus, Indonesia is famous for its tasty meat skewers (usually chicken) cooked over hot coals and slathered in moreish peanut sauce.

Nasi campur:  Nasi campur feels like a bit of a buffet. Your plate typically comes with a scoop of nasi putih accompanied by small portions of a number of other dishes, including meats, vegetables, peanuts, eggs, and fried-shrimp krupuk.

Nasi goreng:  The old favourite among tertiary students is nothing like the local version. Nasi goreng, literally meaning "fried rice”, is a popular rice dish with pieces of meat and vegetables, and a fried egg added on top.

Sambal:  A fiery paste made using a chili base smashed with secondary ingredients like shrimp paste, fish sauce, garlic, ginger, shallot, scallion, palm sugar, lime juice, and rice vinegar.

Learn more about some of the dishes to try in Bali

Eating vegetarian in Bali

Going vegetarian is relatively easy in Bali as many dishes are already meat-free. Tofu and tempeh are also a standard part of the local diet. Key vegetarian dishes to look out for include nasi saur (rice flavoured with toasted coconut and accompanied by tofu, tempeh, vegetables and sometimes egg), urap (steamed vegetables mixed with grated coconut and spices), gado gado (tofu and tempeh mixed with steamed vegetables, boiled egg and peanut sauce) and sayur hijau (leafy green vegetables, usually kangkung – water spinach – flavoured with a tomato-chilli sauce).

The abundance of fresh fruits in Bali means you can buy fresh coconuts and juices (or fruity cocktails) almost anywhere you go. If you're looking for something with a bit more punch then you could order a Bintang, the national larger or maybe arak – a local liquor made from fermented rice and coconut palm flowers.

Festivals and events

Many festivals in the Balinese calendar revolve around religious and spiritual occasions marked by periods of prayer or silence, and followed by lots of festivities and feasting. Some festivals might be inconvenient for travellers, such as the Day of Silence, but they’re also a great opportunity to gain an insight into local life that many don’t get to see.

Multiple surf contests are held throughout the year at different times and in different places. Check with local surfing schools for up to date information.

Top festivals in Bali

Nyepi (Day of Silence):  Bali’s major Hindu festival, Nyepi, or the Day of Silence, celebrates the beginning of a new year and is marked by inactivity. Legends say that this is a strategy to convince evil spirits that Bali is uninhabited and therefore not worthy of visiting! Jokes on them. The day involves prayer, meditation and quiet reflection.

Bali Arts Festival:  For an island with a strong history of cultural arts, it’s no surprise the Bali Arts Festival has pride of place in the annual calendar. Based at the Taman Wedhi Budaya arts centre in Denpasar, travellers can see village-based dance groups competing for local pride across several traditional dance categories. The date changes each year but is typically held between mid-June to mid-July.

Bali Kite Festival:  From July to October, the skies of southern Bali fill with huge, colourful monsters, critters and imaginative creations. Scores of kites are launched by the locals as part of this special spiritual event. It is believed the kites urge the gods to provide abundant harvests.

Indonesian Independence Day:  Held on 17 August each year, this day celebrates Indonesia's independence from the Dutch in 1945. Expect to see legions of marching school children, flags, kites and fireworks. Don’t expect to get anywhere quickly either on the day or the days leading up to it.

Galungan and Kuningan:  Galungan celebrates the death of a legendary tyrant called Mayadenawa. The celebrations come to a head with the Kuningan festival, which is when the Balinese say thanks and goodbye to the gods. The exact dates of these two festivals vary as they are planned using the 210-day wuku (or Pawukon) calendar.

Geography and environment

Bali is undoubtedly Indonesia’s most popular province thanks to its abundance of beautiful beaches, leafy jungles and impressive mountains. Located just east of Java and west of Lombok, the Bali province includes not only the island of Bali but also a few of the smaller neighbouring islands, such as Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan.

Bali's highest mountain is Mt Agung (3,031 m, 9,944 ft), which is also known as the "Mother Mountain”. One of the other popular volcanoes on the island is Mt Batur. Both of these volcanoes have contributed to Bali’s incredibly fertile soil, which has allowed the rice crop trade to flourish.

Bali is located just 8 degrees south of the equator, which means it enjoys a fairly even climate year-round. The average year-round temperature hovers around 30°C (86°F), with a humidity level of about 85%. It's also surrounded by coral reefs and is part of the Coral Triangle, an area with the highest biodiversity of marine species. Over 500 reef-building coral species can be found here, which is seven times the entire Caribbean.

Bali’s problems with environmental pollution are well-documented, and it’s fair to say that the nearly 5.7 million tourists who visit annually are contributing their fair share. In late 2017, Indonesian officials declared a “garbage emergency” after a tide of plastic washed up a 5.8 kilometre (3.6 mile) stretch of coastline. We encourage all travellers to carry a reusable plastic bottle with them, a reusable tote bag for carrying items and to try and minimise their use of plastics wherever possible.

While you’ll find many of the main tourism hubs, like Seminyak and Kuta, filled with international fashion labels, there are also many local boutiques offering a wide variety of hand-made goods. These include traditional wood carvings (and even some famously phallic bottle openers), silver jewellery, colourful sarongs, eco-friendly bags, bamboo satchels, recycled furniture and a near limitless range of body oils and fragrances. Of course, if you’re looking for a traditional ‘I Heart Bali’ t-shirt or Bintang singlet, these are never in short supply either.

Like many parts of South East Asia, bargaining is a big part of the local shopping experience. Getting a good price comes down to how well you can haggle, but it’s important to have fun, bargain in good faith, and remember to smile. You’ll usually find better prices, and more negotiable shop owners, away from the main tourist strips.

When is the best time to visit Bali?

Sitting a snug 8 degrees from the equator, Bali’s climate is classic tropics. There’s a dry season and a rainy season, and not a whole lot in between.

The best time for a Bali tour (weather-wise) is the July to August peak season, or from December to the first week of January.

Although if you’d like to avoid the crowds (and why wouldn’t you) shoulder months like April, May, June and September make an excellent alternative.

The weather is dry and slightly less humid, and the island in general is a lot more relaxed.

October isn’t too bad either, especially if you’re into water sports like scuba diving, surfing or snorkelling (the rainfall is much lighter than in November).

Do you need a visa for a Bali tour?

The short answer is maybe – depending on your nationality. Passport holders from over 60 countries (including the   UK ,   Australia   and the   United States ) can enter Indonesia with a free tourist visa on arrival which allows you to stay for 30 days for tourism purposes. An immigration officer will date stamp your passport when you arrive and you will not be able to extend your stay. If you overstay there are hefty fines of IDR 1,000,000 (approximately 70 USD) per day.

If there's a chance you might want to stay longer than 30 days, you'll need to pay for a visa on arrival or apply for one prior to travelling at an overseas Indonesian consulate or embassy.

To enter Bali, you’ll need to meet the following requirements:

  • proof of onward or return ticket
  • proof of funds to pay for your expenses during your trip
  • completed immigration card (this will usually be given to you on the plane or at the arrival terminal)

Local laws require that you must be able to show your valid passport at any time when required to do so by an immigration office. We recommend taking a clear photocopy of your passport photo page, and visa (after arriving), to carry with you.

Should I tip on a Bali tour?

Tipping isn’t compulsory in Bali, or anywhere else in Indonesia. But, like most countries, it’s very much appreciated.

Remember that many Balinese rely on tourism as a main source of income, and a tip is always appreciated.

What is the internet access like in Bali?

In tourist centers like Kuta, Seminyak, Denpasar, and Lovina internet access should be fine, and there will be plenty of internet cafes (or cafes with free internet) to choose from if your Wi-Fi isn’t up to scratch.

In more rural areas, there could be little or no coverage, particularly during homestays. Just remember to plan ahead.

What are the toilets like in Bali?

Restaurants and hotels in developed tourist centers will have Western-style flush toilets.

In more rural areas the traditional squat toilet will be more common.

We recommend packing a bottle of hand sanitizer if you plan to visit rural parts of Bali.

What will it cost for a...?

Indonesia is one of the world's favourite budget travel destinations. Here's what you can roughly expect to pay for a:

  • Street food snack = 0.15c USD
  • Fresh juice = 0.40c USD
  • Bottle of beer in a bar = 1.50 USD
  • Souvenir sarong = 1.80 USD
  • Dinner in a restaurant = 3 USD

Can I drink the water on a Bali tour?

Drinking water from taps isn’t recommended in Indonesia, but for environmental reasons try to avoid buying bottled water every day. There are a number of filtered canteens you can purchase or bring a supply of water filtration tablets that you can drop into your bottle wherever you go.

If you’re travelling on an Intrepid Travel trip, we always carry with us a large drum of water in our truck to refill your bottles on the road. Our hotel operators will also provide water free of charge to refill your bottles.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Bali?

Major credit cards are widely accepted by large shops, hotels and restaurants in Bali.

T hey may not be accepted by smaller vendors such as small family restaurants, market stalls or in remote towns and rural areas.

Make sure you carry enough cash for purchases since credit cards aren't always an option everywhere in Bali.

What is ATM access like in Indonesia?

ATMs are found widely throughout Bali, so withdrawing cash shouldn't be problematic in most areas. Some smaller villages and rural areas may not have ATM access, so be prepared for this before venturing too far from a city or major town.

What public holidays are celebrated in Bali?

Public holidays may vary from year to year. Find out more information on current public holidays in Bali.

Is Bali safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Homosexuality is legal in most of Indonesia, however, revisions to Indonesia’s criminal code are currently being considered that would criminalise gay sex and same-sex relationships. Advocacy groups fear this would represent a profound setback to human rights in Indonesia as a result. The LGBTQIA+ community has also been known to be targeted and harassed by police.

Bali, with its Hindu majority, has always been more liberal, tolerant and relaxed in attitude, however public displays of affection are still not the norm for any couples anywhere in the country. Upscale hotels will likely not have any issues with same-sex travellers sharing a bed, however if you are staying in budget or family-run businesses and are allocated separate beds, you might feel more comfortable not drawing attention to your relationship.

Because sex, in general, is a taboo subject in Indonesian society, the issue of sexuality is unlikely to arise while travelling here. Indonesia is generally safe for queer travellers, provided you are willing to be discreet and cautious with public behaviour.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.
