Situated 1600 m above sea level, Munnar was a popular retreat for the British. It has now evolved into a proper tourist town with a number of resorts, hotels and restaurants coming up in the area. It is also famous for the special Neelakurinji flower that blooms here every 12 years. The hills turn blue and nature lovers come in large numbers to view this natural phenomenon in person.  Munnar gives ample trekking options to enthusiastic guests.

Meesapulimala trek: A delightful trek to Kerala’s second highest peak

“Have you seen snowfall in Meesapulimala?” Charlie asks Kani who is about to commit suicide. It is a dialogue from the famous Malayalam movie ‘Charlie’ released in 2015. Ever since the release of this movie, Meesapulimala became an overnight sensation, and there was one more reason to visit Munnar now.

The Meesapulimala peak is the second highest peak in Kerala, located in Munnar along the borders of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. It is named so as one of the peaks in Meesapulimala resembles the whiskers of a tiger.

The Meesapulimala trek, organised by KFDC (Kerala Forest Development Corporation), covers eight hills in total on the way to the peak. The hike is through open meadows and is very scenic as it surrounds you with tall mountains, green valleys and a bird’s eye view of Munnar.

I did the Meesapulimala trek with my friends with the help of KFDC. The following guide tells you everything you need to know about the Meesapulimala trek, including an itinerary that you will follow during your journey.

Rhodo Mansion

Which is the best time to visit meesapulimala, kfdc meesapulimala package.

The Meesapulimala trek is conducted exclusively by KFDC , Munnar. Hence, there is no possibility to do this trek on your own.

There are three different types of trek and camping packages offered by KFDC. Every package includes food, accommodation and a trekking guide. You get evening snacks with tea, dinner, breakfast with tea, and packed lunch in terms of food.

It is the most economical and popular option available for trekkers. You stay in tents situated in the base camp (located inside a reserve forest), and every tent accommodates two people.

The base camp has a small pond and a building that houses the staff and the kitchen. There are separate shared bathrooms as well, in case you want to freshen up.

The cost for two persons is INR 4,000.

Sky Cottage

kfdc meesapulimala booking

Sky Cottage is a secluded house ideal for honeymooners and located on the top of a cliff with open views. You can view valleys and a waterfall from the comfort of your room here. You can view the night sky from your room as they have a glass ceiling.

The cost for three persons is INR 9,000.

Rhodo Mansion is the costliest of the lot and is at the highest point out of all the three stay options. The actual trek to Meesapulimala starts from here, and this is where the off-road limit ends.

Hot water is available here as solar energy powers this place. The main advantage of Rhodo Mansion is that you can observe the sunrise and sunset from a viewpoint nearby, and you have in-house chefs who cook food for you.

The cost for two persons is INR 6,000.

Note : The rates keep changing, so check the  KFDC website  to get the updated rates.

How to confirm your KFDC Meesapulimala booking?

You can confirm your Meesapulimala trek booking from the KFDC website . If you have any doubts, you can also call them up (Ph: +91 4865 230332, Mob: +91 8289821408), and they will be more than happy to help you.

Apart from the camping packages, you can also ask any other general questions you may have about the trek. I was able to get many questions clarified through a phone call I had with one of the forest officials.

If you are in Munnar, you can also book the KFDC Meesapulimala package by visiting their KFDC office in Munnar. However, it is better to book the trek in advance as they allow a limited number of tourists per day.

Meesapulimala Route Map

The journey starts from the town of Munnar. You have to collect your pass from the KFDC office in Munnar which is at a distance of 2.5 km from the centre of Munnar. After that, you proceed towards the KFDC base camp. Although it shows 1 hour on the map, the journey from the KFDC office to the KFDC base camp may take up to 1.5 hours due to the road conditions.

The roads are narrow as you will be passing through tea plantations and some stretches of the road are in good condition while other stretches of the road are untarred. Moreover, there are a lot of twists and turns that you need to navigate through. So, drive slowly if you are taking your own vehicle.

Meesapulimala Trek itinerary (1 day/1 night)

Your journey to Meesapulimala starts only in the afternoon. Please reach Munnar in the morning so that you have time to roam around Munnar before making way for Meesapulimala.

You can choose to visit the Mattupetty dam and Top Station since both are on the same route. However, these are commercial tourist places in Munnar, but the drive through this route is pretty scenic. If you don’t have your vehicle, you can easily find shared jeeps in Munnar and even buses that go through these places.

meesapulimala peak

Irrespective of where you travel in Munnar, come back to Munnar town by early afternoon and have lunch. Ideally, you should start your journey towards Meesapulimala at least by 2 pm so that you reach your destination by 4 pm. It ensures that you arrive in Meesapulimala well before sunset.

Before starting for Meesapulimala, visit the KFDC office in the town and collect your pass for Meesapulimala. Whether you booked your package online or offline, you need to take your ticket for Meesapulimala from the KFDC office. Your journey towards Meesapulimala starts from the KFDC office, and it can take up to 1.5 hours, depending on your speed.

If you don’t have a vehicle, you would need to hire a jeep from the KFDC office. It costs INR 3,000 to take you to and from Meesapulimala. It is better to call them up in advance and inform them to be on the safer side.

Suppose you are coming by your vehicle. In that case, it is preferable to have an SUV because the final stretch to the Meesapulimala base camp and beyond is entirely off-road and bumpy.

One of my favourite aspects about Meesapulimala was the drive to Meesapulimala itself. You will be passing through varying landscapes. A vast stretch of tea plantations, tall mountains and quaint villages welcome you on your journey. There are ample opportunities to take photos, so be sure to take breaks in between.

how to reach meesapulimala

On the way, we stopped at a village to have tea from a roadside stall as we saw some village kids playing football in an open field amidst the backdrop of huge mountains. These are sights that you usually don’t see anywhere else, and you will find many such views on your ride.

The last 2 km to the base camp and beyond will be completely uphill and off-road, so you need to park your vehicle if it’s not an SUV right before the ascent (you will know it when you see it) and trek 2 km to the base camp. We did this since we weren’t able to drive further with our Maruti Swift.

The Sky Cottage is 300 metres behind on the way to the base camp, whereas the Rhodo Mansion is another 4kms from the base camp. Irrespective of where you are staying, report at the base camp first, after which an officer will guide you to your respective accommodation.

meesapulimala trek booking

Once you reach your stay, you will be checked in and provided with tea and snacks. If you stay at the Rhodo Mansion, you will also be taken to a nearby place to watch the sunset if you make it on time.

The kitchen staff serves you dinner by 8 pm. KFDC has both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options.

Keep yourself warm by spending some time at the bonfire afterwards. If you are at the base camp, you can socialise with other trekkers and travellers.

Retire for the night.

The following day, tea and breakfast are served in the morning. Get ready and obtain your packed lunch from one of the forest officials.

A trekking guide will be assigned to each traveller group and will be with you during the entire duration of the trek.

Your trek starts at 8 am or 9 am but may vary depending on where you are staying. If you are at the Rhodo Mansion, your trek will start earlier so that you get to see the sunrise as well.

If you stay at the base camp or the Sky Cottage, you need to take your vehicle or hire a jeep that takes you to Rhodo Mansion (additional charge for the same). The Meesapulimala trek route starts from here. It is 4km from the base camp. The drive to the Rhodo Mansion is through the thick rainforest.

meesapulimala base camp

Once you reach Rhodo Mansion (from the base camp or the Sky Cottage), the entire landscape becomes different. You will only see mountains and open grasslands around you.

From the Rhodo Mansion, the Meesapulimala peak is at a distance of 4 km. The trekking route is pretty flat until the last portion of the trek, which ascends to the top. However, being an open area, the sunlight is a bit harsh, so wear a hat, take breaks in between and hydrate yourself regularly.

There are eight hills to cross on the way to the top. The hills are open meadows with grass and some shrubs growing on them. If you are lucky, you might get to see some rare animals like Nilgiri Tahr and Wild Gaur that reside here. We were able to spot some from a distance.

meesapulimala to munnar

Keep an eye on the small water streams around these hills. These are constantly flowing from the top of the mountains. The water from these streams is the purest form of water you can have. Drink it directly from the stream and fill your bottles as well. It will energise you like no other energy drink ever will!

Once you reach the top, if you’re lucky, you will be engulfed or surrounded by clouds. You can see other mountains from Tamil Nadu neighbouring Meesapulimala. Kolukkumalai, the famous mountain peak with the highest tea plantations in the world, is located opposite Meesapulimala. There is even a route from Kolukkumalai to Meesapulimala, but trekking is strictly banned.

Spend some time at the top of Meesapulimala and take in the beautiful scenery around you. Have your photo sessions and observe the panoramic views from the top. In our case, we could not see much apart from a few mountains nearby because we had constantly moving clouds for company. Have your packed lunch afterwards.

kfdc meesapulimala package

After spending some time, make a move for Rhodo Mansion. The trekking route will be parallel to the path you took before, and it takes around 3 km to reach the Rhodo Mansion. You will be descending through the open grasslands until you pass through a forest cover. The Rhodo Mansion is right next to the forest cover.

If you have booked your accommodation at the base camp or Sky Cottage, you will be taken there by your jeep (or use your vehicle). It will be evening approximately by the time you reach your accommodation. We reached base camp by around 4 pm.

You can ask for tea and some snacks again and start your journey back to Munnar before it becomes dark. On the way back from Meesapulimala to Munnar, reminisce all the beautiful experiences and memories you had in the mountains before you enter civilisation again .

How to reach Munnar

Get to Munnar first before going to Meesapulimala. There are different ways in which you can reach Munnar.

How to reach Meesapulimala

The distance from Munnar to Meesapulimala is close to 20 km, and it takes around 1.5-2 hours to reach there. Your journey starts from the KFDC office. Either take your vehicle to Meesapulimala base camp or hire a jeep from the KFDC office.

Thanks Khanh!

Answering your questions:

1. I didn’t stay in Sky Cottage. I stayed in one of the tents in the Base Camp.

But based on reviews, I’ve heard that the experience at Sky Cottage is good, especially if you’re travelling with a partner or family.

2.I’m not sure how the food is served there. You can call the numbers given below (KFDC Ecotourism Munnar) to know more.

we are reaching munnar on our car, is there space to park it in KSTDC office and proceed with Jeep to trek? I am looking to see where i can park our car while we are on the trek. I am not sure if we can drive to base camp with our venue car. Please advise

Hey Vinoth! Sorry for the late reply.

We drove Maruti Swift till the base camp without any issues. So there’s no reason why you can’t drive Hyundai Venue till there.

In any case, I think you can park your car at the KSTDC office and then hire a jeep from there. The best option would be to call them up and confirm.

Meesapulimala trek – The second highest peak in Western ghats

This trek was after quite a long time, obviously due to COVID-19. Started from Chennai to Munnar in a private bus, Ankita was also with me. Before starting the trek, we have to do some bookings. I will get straight into it now.

Previously, anyone could have trekked Meesapulimala peak, there were a lot of private companies arranging the trek. But as far as I know, things have changed. You can only trek to Meesapulimala with the permission of Kerala Forest department. The trek is supervised by the forest department officials. Not a big deal – all you need is to book your slot prior to reaching Munnar.

Meesapulimala base camp

How to book Meesapulimala trek

So go to the website: munnar.kfdcecotourism.com , you can easily book the trekking package according to your preferred time and the luxury of stay you are expecting. Both tenting as well as cottages are available for the night. The reporting time is around 2.30 PM, you need to be physically present at the Forest Department office in Munnar. Once you call them after online booking, you will get the details and location of the office.

Meesapulimala trek: My experience

We reached the Forest Department office, it was raining most of the time that day in Munnar. A jeep from there will take us to the Base camp of Meesapulimala trek. We have chosen tents for the night stay, if you are staying at the cottage, the jeep will take you further 8km up. From Munnar to Base camp, you need to pay 2000 INR. You can form a group from the office and share the expense also.

What happened in our case was, I knew some of my friends were coming on the day for this trek. We didn’t plan this trek together. So there were 5 people in the jeep.

The day was cloudy and rainy, it got dark by the time we reached the camp. The camp was beautifully lit and facilities available were really good. You can expect leeches and be prepared for that. Keep some salt or any leech repellent with you.

The trek starts the next morning at 5.30. There is a sun-rise point on the way. The officers will give all the necessary instructions the day before. There will be a guide with us on the trek. Since there was a forecast for rain on that day, we had already kept aside the idea of sunrise. But anyway, we started our trek on time, after nice hot tea from the camp.

Meesapulimala trek

The trek starts from the cottages at Rhodo Valley. You can either walk from the Base camp to the cottage or ask the jeep driver to drop you. I think you can skip walking this part since it is a 3-4 km road. Anyway it’s your choice. You need to pay some extra money for the jeep.

It was drizzling and windy. The trek was amazing in every sense. Really enjoyed walking over the rolling hills. The flora is something which can keep you awestruck. One side trek will take almost 3 hours. On the way up, it was mostly foggy, the views were hidden from us. But the fog cleared on the way down. At the top of Meesapulimala, we couldn’t stand for more time due to heavy chill winds. We took a different route on the way back. Since the fog had cleared later, the landscape was amazing.

Shola grasslands of western ghats

Meesapulimala is about 2600 meters above sea level. The vegetation is different from what we see in other part of the western ghats. Most of the area is covered with shola forests. You can also see a lot of Rhododendrons on the way. Once these rhododendrons flower, it gives a different feel for the trek. Sometimes, you can see Nilgiri Tahrs roaming in those grasslands (we saw one..!!!).

I am not spoiling the thrill of the trek by describing each and everything, covered most of the essential details for the trek.

Trek to Meesapulimala

Few important things to remember

Meesapulimala trek is through the reserved forest. They are called reserved for a reason. The flora and fauna in this area is very sensitive. We should not do anything which causes harm to them. So strictly, no plastics and no loud music.

Meesapulimala is a moderate trek. Since the altitude is high, the oxygen level is comparatively less. There can be difficulty for breathing. So don’t exert too much, just relax and trek in your own pace.

You have to deal with leeches, if you are coming in the rainy season.

The facilities in the base camp are very good considering the remoteness of the place. Food is also pretty good. But don’t expect any luxury, demanding such unacceptable things will be idiotic.

The jeep cost to and from base camp to Munnar is around 2000 INR. If you form a group, can share the expense. The tariffs for different accommodations are available in the KFDC-Munnar website.

Let me know your thoughts in the comment section.

Also, gratitude to my friend JIGS JAYATHILAKAN for the pictures.

Editor's Review

The Meesapulimala Trek is certainly going to inspire awe in you. For those who like to challenge their bodies, the experience is like a dream come true. You get to see so many diverse things in such a short time. The view from the top is so fantastic that you would want to stay there forever.

  • The whole experience is mesmerising and breathtaking. Words can’t describe it.
  • A very good option for adventure loving people and ardent trekkers.
  • Difficult terrain which gets slippery.
  • Plenty of leeches, especially during the monsoons.

Detailed Info

Meesapulimala peak, at an altitude of 8661 feet above sea level, is the second highest peak in Kerala.  Apparently, ‘Meesapulimala’ gets its name because the peak resembles a tiger’s face. ‘Meesa’, translates to moustache, ‘puli’, to tiger and ‘mala’, to hill in the local language, ‘Malayalam’.

Meesapulimala, about 40 kms from Munnar, is a destination for the highly adventurous souls as this trek is physically demanding. But Meesapulimala is a feast to the eyes and definitely an opportunity to explore nature at its best. The trek takes you through rivulets, shola and pine forests, expansive mountain ranges and a rugged terrain. This is indeed a mesmerising trek where clouds give you company as you reach the peak.

Kerala Forest Development Corporation (KFDC) organizes several trekking programs to Meesapulimala. The officials here are very friendly and helpful. They have day as well as overnight trekking packages. KFDC provides three types of accommodations for those who prefer an overnight stay; Base camp (Tent), Sky cottage and Rhodo valley accommodation. The bookings can be done online well in advance. In addition, there are also private operators like Kalypso Adventures and Munnar holidays who provide day treks.

There are two popular trails to reach Meesapulimala. The shorter 8 kilometre-trek is through Rhodo valley and a longer 15 km trek is from Kurangani through the Kolukkumalai tea estate. You can reach the base camp of Meesapulimala and a KFDC expert guide will take you through the trek. The trek starts through a jeep track and then takes a steep route to the peak of the first hill. Your trail through the next seven hills is laid with waterfalls, ice cold streams, pine trees, grasslands, shola forests, kurinji flowers (that bloom once in 12 years) and the Anayaironkal Lake.

From the peak you get a panoramic view of the vast plains of Tamilnadu, Kolukkumalai hills, Yellapetty, Top Station and Kurangini.  You can also see the Kurinji waterfalls, Mattupetty & Anayirangal reservoirs and the spectacular Anamudi hills, the highest peak on the Western Ghats.  At this pinnacle, the clouds are drifting past you as if having a conversation. If you are lucky, you may spot elephants, sambar, sloth bear and the Nilgiri tahr in their natural habitat.

The descent is relatively easy, where you can either take the same path or a different one, based on the advice of your guide. A trek to Meesapulimala will definitely stay etched in your memory forever.

Hills, rhododendrons and tea estates in God's Own Country, Kerala

  • View hundreds of blooming Rhododendrons, charming tea estates and gurgling brooks.
  • Meesapulimala is a trek through eight hills, passing through the shared border of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Meesapulimala Peak trek is a trek through lush green valleys, hundreds of blooming Rhododendrons, charming tea estates, gurgling brooks - peace is easy to find in the idyllic surroundings of Meesapulimala. Located at a significant altitude of 8,661 feet in the Idukki district of Kerala, Meesapulimala is a trek through eight hills, passing through the shared border of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

This 8 km trek from Rhodovalley takes you through high-altitude grasslands, rainforests and wildlife. The Meesapulima Peak is called so because it apparently resembles a tiger's face, although you're not likely to spot any tiger here. "Meesa" means mustache, "puli" means tiger and "mala" means hill. Hence, it is from this that the peak gets its name and this is why it is called so.

This is just a day's trek and hence trekkers of any age can go for this trek. There are plenty of scenic spots on this trek that trekkers can enjoy and capture. It is an easy to moderate trek and therefore can be completed without any hindrances.

Trail Information

Trek to meesapulimala through rhodovalley.

  • Trek duration: 6-8 hours
  • Distance: 8 km
  • Trek difficulty: Moderate

The trail starts from a Jeep track that goes to the base of the hill. After around 10 minutes, the trail swerves left. It becomes steeper, taking you towards the peak of the first hill. The climb here takes a good 30 minutes. This trail also boasts of Neelakurinji flowers that bloom once in 12 years. From atop this hill, you can see the Meesapulimala peak to the left . You can also catch a glimpse of Munnar and Suryanelli town.

Descend this hill. You'll soon come across a small stream, which you need to cross. The Anayaironkal Lake appears on this trail. Another 20 minutes later, you ascend the next hill. The remaining hills are easy to climb and of similar heights.

Soon, you reach the seventh hill. This is a relatively steep climb. Once you cross over the remaining hills, you finally reach Meesapulimala Peak. You also get a view of the shared border between the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The trek from Rhodovalley to the peak takes around 2 hours.

Note : The trek can also be started from Silent Valley, which is 6 km prior to Rhodovalley. The trek starts from the forest behind Sky Cottages at Silent Valley and takes you through waterfalls, marshy lands and grasslands, until you reach Rhodovalley.

The descent is from the other side of hill and is steep. It enters shola forests and remains in the forest for around 40 minutes. Another 30-40 minutes later, you will get a glimpse of beautiful Kollukumalai tea estates that are situated at a height of 6,675 feet. A Jeep track around these estates takes you to Suryanelli town in another couple of hours.

You can also retrace your route and trek back to Rhodovalley from Meesapulimala.

Trek to Meesapulimala through Kurangini

  • Trek duration: 9 hours
  • Distance: 15 km

This route starts from Kurangini, a small village. The trail gradually inclines towards a steep mountain. The trek is steep, exhausting and there are no water sources on this trail. After 2-3 hours of trekking, you reach a peak with a single pine tree. From here, the path zig-zags around the curves of the mountain.

One to two hours later, you will hit 48 hair pin bends that lead you towards Kollukumalai tea estates. As you trek, watch out for panoramic views of green valleys and vast stretches of grasslands. Walking through this stretch leads you towards shola forests.

From the forest, it is another 1.5 km to Kollukumalai tea estates. The stretch towards tea estates can be tough, especially if the route is covered with vegetation. These tea estates are situated at a height of 6675 feet and boast of an old tea factory built by British.

Beyond the tea plantations, the narrow trail enters a Jeep track and ascends. Once the tea plantations end, the trail becomes narrow, entering once again into shola forests. The summit is close from here. The final one kilometre trek to the peak is slightly steep.

Food and Accommodation

Rhodovalley, Silent Valley, Kollukumalai are good places for accommodation. Take sufficient water, as there are not many water sources on the trail. Avoid monsoon time as the trails can be very slippery and full of leeches.

How Difficult is the Meesapulimala Trek

Cardiovascular endurance

The secret to ascending any trail lies in building your cardiovascular endurance. You can begin by jogging everyday. Ideally, you should be able to jog 4 km in 20 minutes before the start of the trek. It takes time to be able to cover this distance in the given time. Start slow and increase your pace everyday. Swimming, cycling and stair climbing without too many breaks in between can help too. Strength This is another area you should work on. You will need to build strength in your muscles and in your core body. You can do some squats to strengthen your leg muscles. Do around 3 sets of squats, with 8 squats in each set. Apart from this, you can add planks and crunches to your work out.

Flexibility

Another aspect that will help you trek comfortably is flexibility. For this, you can do some stretching exercises - stretch your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, lower back muscles and shoulders regularly. Carrying a backpack, however light, can become a strain after a while. These exercises will help you to be in good shape before the trek. Working out indoors

How to Plan Your Travel

How to reach the start of the trek.

There are two popular trails to this peak. The shorter one (8 km) is through Rhodovalley, which is so named because of plenty of rhododendron trees lining the valley. The longer one (15 km) begins from Kurangani.

To reach Rhodovalley

Board a bus towards Munnar, which is 463 km from Bangalore. You can then catch a Jeep towards Rhodovalley.

To reach Kurangini

Board a bus to Theni in Tamil Nadu. Theni is around 430 km from Bangalore. From there, you get buses to Bodi, which is around 16 km from Theni and then board another bus to Kurangini.

What to Take on Your Trek

Trek backpack

Trek backpack

No, stuffing it all in isn’t the right way to do it Packing a backpack correctly saves precious time that you might waste trying to find your things later. It is wise to spend some time learning what really goes into packing a backpack.

What should I pack?

On a trek, you only get what you take. Something as simple as a forgotten matchbox can cripple your cooking plans throughout the trek. So, it’s essential to prepare early and prepare well. To begin with, make a checklist. While shopping, remember this thumb rule - keep it light. “Every item needs to be light. This ensures that your backpack, on the whole, stays light,” says Sandhya UC, co-founder of Indiahikes. Balancing out heavy items with light ones isn’t going to have the same effect as having all light items. “Always opt for good quality, light items,” says Sandhya.

How much should my bag weigh?

“Your backpack for a weekend trek should weigh between 8 and 10 kg,” explains Arjun Majumdar, co-founder of Indiahikes, “To break it down, your tent should weigh around 2.5 kg, your sleeping bag, around 1.5 kg, and the ration, stove and clothes should constitute the other 5 kg.” The best way to plan is by concentrating on the basic necessities – food, shelter and clothes. Gather only those things that you’ll need to survive. Do not pack for ‘if’ situations. “That’s one of the common mistakes that people make – packing for ‘if situations’. It only adds to the baggage that you can do without on a trek,” says Sandhya.

One good way to go about it is to prepare a list of absolute essentials. Start with the most essential and end with the least essential. That way, when you feel you are overshooting the limit, you can start eliminating from the bottom. Another tip is to be smart while packing clothes. Invest in light. wash and wear fabrics. "Replace a sweater with two t-shirts," adds Sandhya. Layering is the mantra when it comes to trekking. Refer to Sandhya’s clothes list to pack smart.

How to pack

The thumb rule for this one is to eliminate air spaces. Make sure that everything is packed tightly, especially clothes and jackets, as they tend to take up maximum air space. Put in all the large items first. Then squeeze in the smaller ones in the gaps. This ensures minimum air space. A good way to pack clothes is by using the Ranger Roll method.

Where to pack

Bottom Sleeping bag : Make this your base layer. Sleeping bags tend to be voluminous, but do not weigh much. They’re perfect for the bottom of the bag. Tent : Just like the sleeping bag, even tents are voluminous and light. Keep the tent poles separately and place the fabric at the bottom of the backpack.

Middle Heavy jacket : Roll up the jacket in a tight ball and place it in the middle of the backpack, close to your back. The middle region of the backpack should always have the heaviest items. You can store other things like rations or mini stoves in the middle. Other clothes : Roll other clothes and place them in the remaining space, to fill air gaps.

Top Water : Water, although heavy, needs to be easily accessible. So put it in the topmost region of your backpack. Medicine box : This is another component that you wouldn’t want to be scavenging for when in need. Poncho : It could rain at any time in the mountains. So, ponchos should be accessible easily. Also, having a waterproof poncho at the top of the backpack provides additional waterproofing to items in the bag.

It’s crucial to note that the trekking path from Kolukkumalai to Meesapulimala is subject to strict restrictions. The restricted access ensures that the natural habitat remains undisturbed, contributing to the conservation efforts in the area.

Embarking on a trek to the Meesapulimala peak through the picturesque Rhodo Valley, renowned for its vibrant rhododendron flowers, is made possible through organized efforts by the Kerala Forest Development Corporation in Munnar. This offers enthusiasts a well-structured and guided experience, allowing them to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the surroundings.

The vistas from Meesapulimala paint a breathtaking picture of the surrounding landscapes. Gazing into the distance, you’ll be treated to the sprawling beauty of Kolukkumala Tea Estate , the panoramic allure of Top Station Munnar , and the tranquil waters of Anairankal Dam . The majestic Palani Hills stand tall on the horizon, providing a striking backdrop to the scenery.

As you take in the surroundings, don’t miss the captivating Shooting Point and the charming Love-shaped Lake. The undulating beauty extends to Kurangini Hills, with the lush greenery of Yellapetti adding to the visual feast. Completing the panorama, the Suryanelli Tea Estate unfolds, making every moment at Meesapulimala an exploration of nature’s grand canvas.

The Meesapulimala region is not only a treat for trekking enthusiasts but also a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. The diverse fauna in the area includes the majestic Nilgiri tahr, graceful sambar deer, elusive wild gaur, lively wild dogs, and the intriguing sloth bear. The presence of these fascinating creatures adds an extra layer of excitement and intrigue to the trek, providing a unique opportunity to witness the rich biodiversity that thrives in this part of the Western Ghats.

  • Hill Station

Gurgling brooks, blooming rhododendrons and dazzling hillocks make Meesapulimala a natural paradise. This is South India’s second highest peak that is situated at a majestic height of 8724 feet above sea level. Literally meaning “ face of the tiger”, you can trek to the top of Meesapulimala after meandering your way around eight hills.

The trek to the top is a scenic delight with herds of wild elephants and mountain goats all around. There are Meesapulimala trek routes . One is through the red rhododendron forests of Rhodo Valley and the other is via the small village of Kurangini.

If you trek via Rhodo Valley, the trail is shorter and takes around 6-8 hours.  You can go on this trek no matter what age group you belong to as it just 8 kilometers and can be completed in a day itself.  Begin with a jeep trail till the base of the hill. Then start walking towards the first hill and once you reach the top, you will be able to see the beautiful Neelakurinji flowers all around.

After you descend this hill, start climbing the next peak and cross the Anayaironkal Lake. Sit for a minute here and take in the beauty of the land all around. Continue on your journey and climb all seven hills that are around the same height and are quite easy to climb. When you reach Meesapulimala Peak , you will also be able to enjoy a panoramic view of the Tamil Nadu and Kerala borders.

The descent from here is a little steep and you will have to walk through the shola forests for around 40 minutes. After a while, you will be able to spot the Kolukkumalai tea estates and can stop for a cup of tea. Proceed on a jeep till Suryanelli town.

The other route to Meesapulimala you can travel by is Kurangini which takes around 9 hours. This trek is also suited for all age groups and takes a little longer than the first as it is around 15 kilometers.

Start this trek from the small village of Kurangini and slowly the trail inclines towards the steep mountain. Make sure you carry water along with you as this can get a little exhausting. Keep trekking for 3 hours until you reach a peak that has a single pine tree. This path then zigzags around the mountain curves.

After a number of hairpin bends, the Kolukkumalai tea estates will come into view. Take a break and enjoy the splendid views of the green meadows and lush shola forests. Keep trekking till the tea estates which are a little exhausting as there is vegetation all around.

Once you pass these tea estates, you will come across a jeep trail and the trail ascends. Be careful as the trail now becomes narrower and takes you through the shola forests again. You will come across the final one kilometre trek to the top that is a little steep so tread carefully. Follow the same path back during the descent.

Meesapulimala trekking is one of the most famous activities of Munnar and it is a must try on your visit here! Make sure you trek to this beautiful Meesapulimala peak as you will get to view majestic tea gardens and misty forests. Enjoy the hilltop view and have a fun adventurous experience!

Meesapulimala Trekking – Best Tips on Booking, Stay , Tour and Route

Meesapulimala Trekking – Best Tips on Booking, Stay , Tour and Route

posted on November 22, 2021

Meesapulimala was a secluded and unexplored place in the tourism map of Kerala until 2015. Most of the people were not even aware of Meesapulimala Trekking which is nothing less than paradise on earth and one of the most popular trekking spots in Munnar.

Meesapulimala trekking

A sudden rush of tourists to Meesapulimala was a result of a recent Malayalam movie – Charlie – where the hero says it is the place to visit before you die and the descent of mist enveloping the peak is a sight worth watching. Now Meesapulimala is one of the most visited places in Kerala welcoming honeymooners, bikers, mountaineers and adventurists alike. One can always see a swarm of tourists escalating the gigantic mountain.

ALSO SEE – Best Treks in Munnar

Meesapulimala is a fusion of three words ‘ meesa ’ which means moustache, ‘ puli ’ which means a tiger and ‘ mala ’ which means mountain in Malayalam. The view of Meesapulimala resembles a tiger about pounce. It is not just the peak but every nook and corner and every twist and turns in the way equally enthralling.

The jeep ride from Munnar to base camp and the 8 km trek from there to the peak offers an assemblage of blissful sceneries and landscapes; passing through tea plantations, densely covered forests, lakes and the imposing 8 hills to trek.

Here are some snaps from Meesapulimala Treks of Iris Holidays   (used with permission)

meesapulimala trek kfdc

Located at a significant altitude of 8,661 feet in the Idukki district of Kerala, Meesapulimala is the second highest peak of the state and the range of eight hills passes through the shared border of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Details of Meesapulimala Trekking

  • Trek duration: 6-8 hours, depending on the place from where you start
  • Trek distance: 8 km
  • Trek difficulty: Moderate to strenuous
  • Best time to visit: September to May; avoid monsoon season as the place would turn slippery making it difficult to trek.

KTDC trekking package

The Kerala Tourism Development Corporation has Meesapulimala trekking packages. If you wish to scale this majestic mountain this is the only way to go as the government has announced all other trekking to be illegal.

Munnar town to base camp

The adventure starts in Munnar town. From there the trail starts in a Jeep track that goes to the base of the hill. The road meanders through tea estates and beautiful valleys and the journey is smooth for the first 10 minutes after that it becomes steeper and gruelling taking you towards the lap of the mountain ranges.

ALSO, SEE – Eravikulam National Park

At base camp

KTDC is offering three stay facilities the base camp, sky cottage and Rhodo mansion.

  • The tents at the base camp are very warm and comfortable. Extra sleeping bags are arranged by the KTDC volunteers. By nightfall the temperature drops along with it. The warm tent is not enough to contain the chillness. The tents are for two; restrooms, electricity recreational activities like campfires are arranged in the common building by the camp.
  • Sky cottage is exclusively for couples honeymooning. The cottage is ideally located and designed to nurture love. It is a lonely and secluded cottage atop a cliff overlooking a beautiful waterfall.
  • Rhodomansion is located at 7500 feet altitude and surrounded by breathtaking scenery. The mansion is at the foothill of Meesapulimala, right where the trekking starts. You are travelling as a group; the Rhodomansion is the best place to stay because more than 10 people can stay together there.

Reaching and reporting for Meesapulimala Trekking

It is ideal to reach a day before the trek so that you can relax and start fresh in the morning. The trek is strenuous and you need to be as energized and fresh as possible when you commence the trek. When you reach Munnar you need to report at the KTDC office and from there the accommodation facilities can be reached by hiring a Jeep.

KTDC will arrange the Jeep but it is not included in the package and has to be paid separately. The KTDC office has a beautiful floriculture centre which is a treat to any weary travellers eyes; the garden has an array of exotic and wild high altitude plants and flowers.

Ascend to Meesapulimala Trekking

Ascend begins when everyone from all accommodations reaches the foothill ready to trek. The trek is in groups with two KTDC guides to help and guide the tourists. It takes 3-4 hours to reach the peak if the climate is favourable. The process of ascending is not just scaling one mountain; you have to cross a series of ups and downs to finally reach the peak.

In every few meters, the mountains offer streams of sparkling fresh mineral water to quench the thirst of the weary mountaineer. You have to cross seven hills to reach your destination and the seventh hill is the steepest of them all. But the promise of the peak’s sublime view and the ecstasy of conquering the second tallest peak in Kerala keep the traveller going.

Meesapulimala peak or Tiger Moustache Mountain

By noon or early noon, the tourists will reach the top. Their tourists are given time to relax and click pictures. The view at the top of the mountain is worth all the trouble. The vision of clouds floating beneath gives a feeling of being in heaven and looking down on earth. Before descending the volunteers will distribute food that they have packed and brought along.

From the peak, you can catch a glimpse of marvellous Munnar and neighbouring Suryanelli which is another place worth seeing. If the enveloping clouds drop down the tourists could see the border shared between the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

After finishing the dinner the descend starts again in groups. The way used for ascending is not used to descend. The steeper way is avoided as it would be difficult to trek down a steep way. Meesapulimala peak beckons trekkers with open arms

 alt=

A trip to the picturesque hill station of Munnar in Kerala will be complete only after a trekking spree at the pristine Meesapulimala Peak. It is always invigorating to step into a place embraced by laid-back mist and expansive greenery. Why not hit the road to Meesapulimala, which is on the Idukki district in Kerala and Theni district in Tamil Nadu border, like actor Dulquer Salman in Malayalam flick ‘Charlie’.

The enchanting peak Meesapulimala is the second highest peak in the Western Ghats and the trekking path is through the Rhodo Valley. One can reach the base camp of Meesapulimala after driving 24km from Munnar via Mattupetty and has to board a jeep to go to Rhodo Valley from there. The 4km journey from the base camp to Rhodo valley is replete with breathtaking sights including the scenic Pandava cave. The overnight stay at the valley in a tent under the star-studded sky can only be ethereal.

The descent from the top of Meesapulimala is extraordinary as the hikers have to trek through the coniferous pine trees. The nature rolls out a red carpet decked with Rhodo flowers from the point the row of pine trees ends. Rhododendron, which is the national flower of Nepal, blooms abundantly in Meesapulimala. The peak is threaded with streams and it is indeed a great sight to see the milky waters cascading down the rocks. The top of the peak is close to 12km away from the Meesapulimala base camp and it is noteworthy that one would not get bored of trekking as the whole terrain is captivating.
