Backcountry ski tours Japan

5 of Japan’s best backcountry adventures, plus the guides to help you tackle them safely

' src=

Get your Japow fix with one of these guided backcountry tours

Skiing Japan’s backcountry with a guide is not only the best way to guarantee your share of the country’s famous powder, it also arms you with someone who has knowledge of the local terrain and training in snow safety and avalanche risk. If you’re a first-timer to the backcountry, we highly recommend reading this article first , which talks about the benefits if skiing with a guide, what to look for, and the kind of equipment you might need.

If you’re ready to take the next step and start planning, then continue reading. The five adventures below are available to book via Ski Asia partner explore-share – a booking engine for guided backcountry experiences around the world, on which guides have been vetted for the relevant certifications (in Japan, this is often with the Japan Mountain Guides Association).

Ski touring on Mount Yotei in Hokkaido

Price: from ¥10,310 per person per day

Backcountry skiing on Mt. Yotei

Mt Yotei. Image: explore-share. Enquire about this tour

Visitors to Niseko will be familiar with the imposing sight of Mount Yotei, a 1900-metre symmetrical stratovolcano that lies to the east of the Niseko United ski resorts. Skiing into the Yotei’s crater on a bluebird day is a true bucket list item for locals and visitors alike, though getting the right weather for this can be as much of a challenge as the skin to the top, which can require anywhere from five to eight hours.

As with all good guides, your experience will be tailored to suit the weather conditions, so if a trip to the summit isn’t possible (or desired), you might find yourself skiing lower down, where the tree skiing can be superb. Guide Jun is a Hokkaido local with an intimate knowledge of Niseko and its surrounds, and also regularly takes guests to places like Rusutsu, Nakayamatoge, Asahigaoka, Rankoshi and Chisenuppuri.

The best backcountry experiences in Japan have one thing in common: they finish with a cold beer, some delicious Japanese food and a relaxing soak in a traditional hot spring (onsen). This trip is no different!

About your guide

Certification: Japan Mountain Guides Association (JMGA)

Jun is a JMGA-certified ski guide from Hokkaido who, in his own words, “knows every corner of this incredible island”. He regularly takes guests to the most beautiful parts of Hokkaido, including Shiretoko (UNESCO World Nature Heritage), Daisetsuzan National Park, Rishiri, Niseko and Asahikawa.

4-day backcountry skiing tour on Rishiri Island (accommodation included)

Price: from ¥119,588 per person per day (includes 5 nights’ accommodation)

When we caught up with Andrew Spragg and Rob Thompson , two of Hokkaido’s backcountry veterans, they both named Rishiri Island as the pinnacle of their powder skiing adventures in Japan. It’s a destination that’s for the truly adventurous – a remote island volcano off the north-western tip of Hokkaido, with infamous weather conditions, but the terrain to excite the most seasoned backcountry aficionados. Many visit Rishiri with their eyes on the summit (if it is visible!), but there’s no guarantee that the weather will cooperate.

This 4-day Rishiri backcountry tour puts guests in the ultra capable hands of JMGA-certified guide Toshiya Watanabe, who was born on the island and has spent the past two decades climbing and mapping its skiable terrain. He is unquestionably THE person to rely on for the best experience on Rishiri.

Your trip will also include five nights in Toshiya’s family-run guest house, which is comfortable and features an onsen and some very good family-style cooking (seafood, naturally).

JMGA level 2-certified guide Toshiya Watanabe was born in Rishiri and has spent much of career attempting to make it a backcountry hotspot . He has reached the summit more than 500 times, and says he knows the island “like the back of my hand”.

3-day backcountry skiing in Tohoku

Price: from ¥45,361 per person per day

Tohoku is the region to visit if you’re after an old-school Japanese snow experience: less development, smaller resorts, fewer international tourists, bucket loads of snow.

Over this 3-day trip, you’ll be based out of Morioka city – a gateway to the top powder destinations in Iwate and Akita prefectures, and also home to some good dining and nightlife options.

Guide Kenichi will select the best locations depending on the weather, and your itinerary might include experiences like a hike to the summit of Hachimantai’s Mt. Chausu (1915m), a cat-assisted journey to the summit of Mt. Akita Komagatake (1637m), or a day spent exploring the backcountry areas around Geto Kogen ski Resort, known for its epic winter snowfalls.

The region is also famous for its historic and picturesque onsen, like the gorgeous Nyuto Onsen in Akita prefecture, with mineral-rich cloudy water. A piping-hot soak with wintry alpine views is the best way to cap off a day skiing waist-deep Tohoku powder.

Kenichi is a multi-talented JMGA-certified guide who, in addition to backcountry skiing, also guides mountaineering expeditions, hiking trips and canyoning all over Honshu. His backcountry guiding journey started in 2002 in Minakami, where he later founded one of the region’s first ski guiding companies.

Kenichi has a wealth of international experience too. He’s done seasons in Canada and the U.S. as a skiing and rafting guide, and two seasons in Switzerland as a hiking guide. He regularly travels to North America and Europe with his clients.

“Keni was an unbelievable guide, not only on the mountain but also in town during the night. An additional comment was he supported us post tour as he was still in the area. Much appreciated everything he did”, writes one of Kenichi’s past guests.

12-day freeride ski trip in Niseko

Price: From 2,258 EUR

This 12-day backcountry tour, based out of Niseko, has everything for the serious skier: a great selection of terrain, avalanche training, filming and analysis, and even a night-time powder skiing session thrown in for good measure.

You’ll visit powder hotspots like Kiroro, Rusutsu and Moiwa, log some time on Mount Yotei (see item one), and get into Niseko’s famous back bowls, where you’ve likely seen video edits of the resort’s incredibly light, deep powder. It’s a jam-packed itinerary, and you’ll benefit from being based in Japan’s most popular resort, with everything you could conceivably want at your fingertips: shopping, gear rental, great dining and nightlife and loads of accommodation options (from budget backpacker lodges to 5-star hotels).

12-day Niseko backcountry tour

Certification: UIAGM (known in English as IFMGA, International Federation of Mountain Guide Associations)

Josef is a highly experienced UIAGM-certified guide from the Czech Republic, with an impressive five summits on 8thousander peaks to his name and an extensive career guiding around the world (all seven continents!), including numerous treks, climbs and ski touring expeditions. He represents Patagonia, SKI TRAB and ABS avalanche backpacks, and splits his winters between Japan and Europe, where he runs his own guiding operation out of Prague.

He likes Czech beer and food, passionate guests and jokes, and with all his experience skiing around the world, has come to the conclusion that Japan has “the best powder snow on earth”.

Riding in Hakuba with the top male FWQ snowboarder in Japan

This is not explicitly a backcountry tour, but you’ll be skiing deep alpine bowls, steep ridges, tree-lined runs – all within the resort boundaries of Hakuba Valley. The resort is widely regarded as Japan’s best freeskiing destination, and the only destination in Asia that has hosted (and continues to host) a stop on the Freeride World Tour.

Better yet, you’ll earn boasting rights by spending a day hot on the heels of Taichi Sato, Japan’s top-ranked male FWQ snowboarder, who took top step on the podium in the Hakuba stop of the 2018 Freeride World Qualifier series.

“The snowpack is generous and world-class, so you will never have to worry about riding in slush or less-than-desirable conditions”, claims Taichi.

“And the legends are true: the snow is arguably the best on Earth!”

Note that Taichi is not a certified mountain guide (hence the requirement to stay within resort boundaries), but he has a wealth of experience in Hakuba and will undoubtedly be able to guide you to the best powder zones and natural features in the resort.

Everything was very straightforward, very helpful, very stress free, well organised and great accommodation and would definitely recommend to others.

"Cathy S

Fantastic, very customer focussed service. Very helpful when changing circumstances and always accommodating where possible. Staff on the ground were super helpful and nothing too much trouble. Definitely recommend to enable easy, seamless holiday. Thanks guys !

"Anonymous"

The staff was responsive and helpful every step of the way. There was a lot of back and forth over a number of months to put all the arrangements in place and this process was very smooth. Once the trip was under way all arrangements had been made precisely as had been discussed and agreed to.

Thanks to all the staff at Japan Ski Experience for all the help making our stay in Hakuba Valley (Hida Peaks) a wonderful one. We will never forget our first ski experience and fine accommodations in Japan. The lodging and transportation services were invaluable for our trip.

"Kai G

Communication was great. They never refused to go above and beyond with anything they could assist with. The choices of accommodation and property prices associated with the listing were and are 5 star. Thank you and no doubt plan to book with Japan Ski Experience in the future. A high recommendation from me to say the least.

The price was better than anywhere else quoted and communication was good.

"Yeow K

Fast response and also pick up services

"Sarah B

The accommodation was excellent, our transfers were easy and overall the communication regarding bookings etc was great!

Great service and support from staff - everything was taken care of before we arrived - lift tickets, equipment hire, accommodation, transfers etc. Outstanding accommodation at Gakuto Villas.

"Lloyd D

* Prompt replies to questions * Very organised and easy to follow and contact

"Sunil P

was well managed apart from the on ground team for the apartment which did not answer whatsapp calls.

"Kylee J

We appreciated the services provided by the company during our stay. We enjoyed the accomodation as it was clean, comfortable and accessible.

"Rachel G

This was our first time at the snow in Japan. JSE made the whole process of booking resort accommodation and snowboard hire in Hakuba very easy. I asked many questions along the way and answers were always prompt and informative. I will definitely be using them again for my next Japan trip!

"Marcus C

Special thanks to Emily & Guan. Our original pick up made a mistake & picked up Emily's guest instead, but Emily took her initiative to help us locate our pick up, explained the situation and offered to send us to our accommodation and since her vehicle can only take 3 of us, she arranged for another colleague Guan to pick my 2 other boys. Departure was also smooth and timely. In all, the entire experience for us with Japan Ski is simply awesome.

"Steve C

Never having been to Japan before and not knowing where to start, JSE made the experience very easy. It was good going there knowing that everything was organised. This was especially important as we were a group of 9.

"Nabil A

Duncan understood my requirements, great advice and most of all prompt response. I felt comfortable and assured through out the journey from pre booking till arrival day at Hirafu.

The quality of customer service was exceptional. They were quick to respond both before and during my holiday, and actually provided helpful and useful information!

"James M

The service was very prompt and responsive to our needs.

Japan Ski Experience provided great support for booking our first holiday in Japan. We were not familiar with the area, nor the accommodation options. They provided sound advice, which enabled us to chose the best spot for our base. They also made booking skis, transfers, passes etc very simple for people who had not skied in Japan before. They're also really friendly!

"Nicola B

The whole process of booking our holiday with Japan Ski Experience has been an absolute breeze and we had the best holiday ever with our two teenage boys! The accommodation they suggested suited us perfectly! Serviced apartment. It had a private shuttle bus every half hour to the local slopes and a bus stop for every other ski resort just out the front! My boys just walked to the slopes 5 min walk to the ski lift, we were a 1-minute walk to the supermarket to buy breakfast food for my boys who eat a lot. It was so convenient. I also booked several restaurants recommended by Japan Ski and they were all fabulous. Several yummy food trucks right near our accommodation my kids loved all the food it was so easy. We booked all our ski lessons through the booking portal including our transfers to and from the airport. I had a few questions throughout the booking and Duncan and Yuka were absolutely amazing and so quick to respond to all my silly questions being a first-time skier They arranged everything all we had to do was get there! Our lift tickets were waiting in the lobby on arrival and everything else was booked with a clear schedule. A total stress-free experience I would love to return in 2025 and do it all again! Thanks to the wonderful team ant Japan Ski Experience

Hokkaido, Japan Ski Tours

Our Hokkaido ski and snowboard trips focus on riding untracked powder and the quality of skiing! We use our combined experience guiding, tour planning, and Mako’s vast network of industry professionals to find the best snow Hokkaido has to offer! We consistently get our clients to skiing and snowboarding which is unparalleled! These trips are led by an IFMGA guide, co-guided by RRA owner Carl Dec and local Japanese ski guide Makoto Takeishi.

The island of Hokkaido is famous for its deep, dry snow and powder skiing! Cold fronts coming out of Siberia mix with moisture as they cross the Sea of Japan. The result is huge amounts of cold dry fluffy snow. The terrain in Hokkaido is mostly birch tree glade skiing and as steep as you like. On the occasion, when it stops snowing and we can see, there are opportunities to climb and summit some of the bigger mountains and volcanoes.

You will fly into Sapporo, Japan via the New Chitose Airport and be greeted by our guides. From there we make the drive to Otaru where we will be based for the start of the week. This gives us the option to ski the areas of Kokusai, Kiroro, Sapporo Teine and others while at the same time allowing you to explore the culture, food and fun of this wonderful city in the evening. We purposely choose smaller, less crowded areas that offer, what we think is, a better, more authentic Hokkaido ski experience.

Mid-week we travel to the northern part of the island and base in Asahikawa City. This gives us the option to ski Asahi-Dake, Kamui Ski Links, Furano and other “secret” backcountry locations. These “secret spots’ are often the highlight of the trip!

The focus of our Hokkaido ski trip is riding untracked powder! If it is snowing, which is the norm and we can access untracked snow, lift-served side-country skiing is what we will do. However, if conditions dictate, we could be touring to access good snow for a portion of or sometimes all day. Therefore, touring equipment, some touring experience and descent fitness are mandatory. It is best to come into this trip as an advanced downhill skier, comfortable in black diamond tree skiing (28-38 degrees).

We choose each day’s location based on weather, experience, and most importantly, information that is available to us through Mako and his network of local guides, ski patrollers and professional skiers and boarders. It is this wealth of information that constantly enables us to find the best snow for our clients. While others sit in the rain or are not riding due to high winds we have consistently delivered the goods. We focus on the details allowing you to ride the best snow available and immerse yourself in the culture and food of Japan.

Amazing trip and guide! Would do it again

Michelle Harrison

We had a blast canyoneering the Bow and Arrow Canyon with Dan! He is a great well experienced guide. He is also super fun and patient. It was our first time canyoneering and we all loved it! We would highly recommend this trip to anyone!

Jen Hocherman

This half day rafting trip was fantastic! We would absolutely recommend it! Our guide Dan was knowledgeable and had lots of interesting information to share along the way. We rafted through four sets of rapids, got soaked, and had fun!

Makayla Taylor

Every part of this was amazing!! Dan was our tour guide and he was incredible! 100% recommend.

Joyann McChesney

Great day, fantastic guides! Highly recommend.

Alison Browning

We did Bow & Arrow route 2 adults, 2 middle schoolers. Kenzie was fantastic, especially with helping one child face fears on the big rappel. This is a great activity for adventurous families

Adam Smith

We had an awesome experience! I took my 4 kids ages 9-16 on the Morning Glory canyoneering trip. Our guide Kenzie was awesome! The 2 rappelling spots of 90 & 120 ft in Grandstaff were amazing and the most memorable time for my kids in Moab. Thank you!

Lisa reese

Carl was very easy to work with in planning your trip. All guides were fun, knowledgeable, and confident in their skills. I would recommend the Bow and Arrow as it has the most repels. The hike up and in was very scenic.

Brandon Swenson

Honestly the best river rafting company group in Moab. They are local experts, the guide we had really gave us a good time out there. Next time we're in Moab we're comin back!

George

Canyoneering was incredible! Our guide, Brian, was very knowledgeable about rappelling and the terrain. He made our group feel very safe the whole way. Highly recommended if you’re looking for an adventure!

William Kellagher

I did the Rock of Ages Canyoneering trip today & it was AWESOME!! Brian was an amazing guide and the group I was with was great. The best day I had on my Moab trip! If you're afraid of heights like me, don't let that stop you from booking a trip. It was incredible day

Brett Woodward

I took AIARE lvl 1 with Garth and Jeremy and I learned a ton and had a great time in the process, couldn’t ask for more!

Jake Scheuerlein

Garth and Jeremy were fantastic instructors and I plan on taking my Level 2 first thing next season thru RRA.

Antoine Rioux

Amazing experience! Our guide John understood very well our expectations for the day and chose safe options to have a lot of fun despite the considerable risk for avalanches (> 60 inches of snow in the last days).

Nathan Dorfman

I could not be more satisfied with my AIARE 1 class with Red River Adventures and awesome instructors Jake and Garth. Engaging, educational and a ton of fun.

Rebecca Raich

Great AIARE 1 class - instructors knew their stuff and were patient & professional. Class was pretty intensive, but I now feel like I can more safely adventure in the backcountry.

hudsonm777

Highly recommend. Friend and I hired a guide for our first time ice climbing. Bryan was super knowledgeable and helped everyone grow and have a great time.

Zoe Huish

Had my Avy 1 Course this weekend led by Garth Tino and Jake Scheinman. They were both fantastic instructors and people. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience!

Nathan Hernday

Had an awesome time doing some ice climbing, guided by Jake. I was hoping to do as much learning as possible on gear and techniques, and he was fun and full of all the info that I was looking for. Jake and Red River Adventures are both highly recommended.

Lisa Ryan

We just got done with our tour with Jake. It was amazing! He was very educational and also very helpful for our first time out! I would highly recommend Red River Adventures for any touring trip.

Christine Patterson

Awesome experience with John in the backcountry. Perfect mix of fun runs and learning experiences. Definitely a day I won’t forget !

Ben Romney

Did a one week guided ski trip in Hokkaido with Carl and local guide Mako. It was, without hyperbole, the best damn trip of my life. Skiing was phenomenal, followed by an amazingly relaxing, refreshing, and energizing onsen visit, then wonderful drinks/dinner, at a different spot every night for a great variety of Japanese cuisine. I honestly could t have asked for more.

Steven Obrzut

Great, friendly, and knowledgeable

Ema Waring

Brian J was a great guide for the beginner, full-day ice climbing tour in UT! Coming in with no prior experience, my party felt safe the whole time. It was a great workout and experience.

Kyle W.

Brian was an amazing guide for our ice climbing excursion and Red River made the whole experience super seamless and easy. 10/10 would book again.

Brian

The pow was legendary. The laughs were all time. One of the best trips of my life. Carl and co have it dialed.

Austin McMullen

Amazing experience with Jake in my Level 1 course!

Scott Conway

John and Adam lead us through the 3 day Avi 1 experience. It was very informative, well-managed and adaptive for the different skill levels of the class and accounting for the weather changes. I can not wait to take the next course with them.

Sarah Clark

Great day in the mountains with a great guide

Andrew Grimes

Really knowledge and professional guides. We had a super informative, well organized Avy1 class that was also a fun time. Thanks John and Adam!

Mark Holbrook

Wonderful trip with them skiing in BC with Northern Escapes Heli skiing!

A Google User

Red River put on a great Avy AIARE 1 course. Great knowledgeable guides giving practical skills that can be used everyday we are planning to go into the backcountry.

Mark Sghiatti

Instructors were great. Super friendly and accommodating.

Andrew Upton

Knowledgeable folks that are precise and efficient. Added a lot of fun to an avy 1 course while highlighting the dangers of the activity

Katie & Rob Johnson-Needham

Awesome experience. Carl was great at picking terrain to match ability and gave helpful tips /instruction

Brian Cain

We took an avalanche rescue class in the Wasatch with Red River. Our guide, Jake, was awesome! Small group, great/welcoming educational environment, fun all around. Update: came back for AIARE 2 and I'd give another 5 stars if I could. Another small group size. Chris & Sam were gurus. Both Red River classes were like an AMA with the snow oracle.

Ada S

Derek was a great guide, would highly recommend.

Luke Counterman

Took the AIRIE-1 course through Red River Adventures. Our guides John, Jake, and Garth were fantastic. The layout of the three days worked very well. There was an emphasis on participation especially in mapping and pre-trip planning. Group size was small on field days, 5-6 people per instructor, which enhanced learning. Overall exceeded my expectations for the course and had a blast skiing in the Wasatch backcountry to boot.

Max Valverde

Had an incredible avalanche one course. John, Jake, and Garth are true professionals and total legends in the backcountry. I’d learn from these guys, or go on a tour with them as guides any day of the week! Thanks again gents.

Shawn Gordon

Great Avalanche Rescue course. A good refresher for the season. Highly recommend John as a guide! His help and advice doesn't end when the class is over.

Jason L

John taught our avalanche rescue course and was fantastic. I am so much better prepared to respond in an emergency.

Ashley Bovee

Red River Adventure is the place to go for an Avy course! The guides are extremely educated, fun, and it is clear they love what they do. They were able to answer all my questions and beyond. John and Jake did a great job with the course, leaving me with more confidence, but respect, in the backcountry than ever before.

Pr3Historic

Kaya, Mary, and Spencer were the best guides one could ask for in every way

Ellie Jacques

Had an epic time with Kaya, Spencer, and Mary at crack camp. HIGHLY recommend crack camp for other climbers who have been on a couple cracks but lack formal instruction in crack climbing. Staff was professional and RRA/Carl was super helpful and communicative.

Anna Schapiro

We had a relaxing ride down the river in Moab with a guide who was extremely knowledgeable about the surroundings. Sadly Labor Day was the last day of the season for rafting. Keep that in mind!

Bruce Whittemore

Ben was an awesome guide. He was great to hang with. Was safety conscious, and was extremely helpful. We would definitely enjoy climbing with him again

David Zane

Unbelievably professional and skilled - amazing time

Keilah Butler

Great guides, great experience! Thanks!

Savannah Houle

It Was Absolutely Amazing, Had Such A Wonderful Time ! Loved Being Able To Swim And Enjoy The Views

Joe Carissimi

Great full day tour!! Sarah was an awesome guide. Good time had by all. Highly recommend it.

Skilas really did provide the best of all worlds. Reservation at comfy and well-appointed hotels, pick up every morning in the Skilas van, door to door to a different resort every day based on the inside scoop of where conditions would be best, different levels of skiers and snowboarder and everyone was able to join in, piste and off piste, gnarly and groomers. The freedom to do your own thing if you wanted, but the invitation to meet up for lunch or make plans to do something some evenings. Each day was fun and flexible with our van groups deciding together if we might stop off at onsen on the way home. Silas had plenty of advice and knew all the great runs as well as places to eat and dishes to order. I was a solo traveler and I made friends with other solo travelers. In my group there was also a couple, a family, and a father and son. All ages. Would really recommend. I had previously done a trip to Myoko Kogan with friends and the time that was wasted trying to figure it all out, plus the dud days we spent at one resort not knowing conditions would have been better elsewhere… Skilas’s expertise did save time and money in the end, and the convenience was priceless. When you factor in the time off work and the flights to Japan, it’s just not worth wasting time. Silas is a great guy, fantastic host, and the value for money is genuinely good, he didn’t inflate prices and went out of his way to please. As for the area, Sapporo rocks! I much preferred Sapporo to Tokyo, and the snow quality and variety of the terrain at the resort Skilas took us to was excellent.

Wow, Skilas – what can I say? It was a fantastic, unique experience visiting the smaller quieter resorts not used by the larger tour operators. Whilst places such as Kiroro, Kokusai and Sapporo Teine don’t look much on a piste map lift lines were non-existent and it often felt as if we had the whole mountain to ourselves. Your in-depth resort knowledge always found a seemingly unlimited supply of the deepest and lightest powder I’ve ever skied. The Teine gullies were a particular highlight that will stay with me for a long while. Also many thanks for all your hard work and organisation away from the slopes and your company around the Sapporo in the evening. All in all, a totally fabulous trip. Hope to see you again next year!

My son and I spent a week with Silas and it was a grand time. Silas knows the ski mountains like the back of his hand. On the one day it did not snow, he still found knee deep fresh powder. The mountains may appear small, but Silas makes them ski big because of his intimate knowledge of the off piste areas. Everything about the trip was first class and I would highly recommend Skilas Japan to anyone. Silas is a wonderful guide as well as a great all around guy.

I honestly can’t wait for the next opportunity to get back to Japow with Skilas. Being used to snowboarding in the Alps, I was a bit skeptical at first cause the mountains are relatively smaller but my word the powder is out of this world, I’m talking waist deep. Having someone that knew these mountains so well was well worth it… Skilas pretty much did the hardwork for me. He researched daily the weather forecast and powder alert for each resort in Hokkaido and we set out early in the morning and got the best powder that day had to offer. This dude will find new powder just when you thought you had exhausted the mountain. Can’t wait to get back to Japow – best snowboarding experience ever

A very big thank you for such an awesome ski tour.

Run after run of lift accessed deep snow and the ability of being able to make first tracks on the last run of the day is a testament of your knowledge of the resorts we visited. Skiing powder should not be so easy!

The joy was more than the guided skiing – just being in the beautiful gullies and the serenity of the wonderful tree glades added a real appreciation of the environment we were in. The vibrancy of Sapporo, the variety of the local food and bars and the visits to the traditional village Onsens made the trip a real cultural experience.

Thanks again to you and your team for a great time. I look forward to being back again next year.

Many thanks for organising a wonderful two week tour of the ski resorts around Sapporo. The personal service was excellent starting from the pick-up from the airport to meeting up every morning to decide which ski resort we would drive to that day to provide the best opportunity for “deep pow.” The hotel was comfortable and efficient and the location in Sapporo perfect for enjoying the restaurants and bars around town. Looking forward to coming back next year!

In Japan...it snows

An awful lot. Different Snow feature twelve of the very best ski resorts in Japan, where the powder is waist deep and life-affirming.

Different Snow

We are avid skiers. equally, we are in love with japan..

Different Snow is a tour operator for the curious-minded ski or snowboarding adventurer, with a desire to venture beyond the same old resorts and instead head East.

We specialise in tailor-made and small group ski & snowboard holidays to Japan. We have skied throughout the country - indeed, we only arrange travel to resorts we've visited multiple times ourselves, so you benefit from our first-hand experience. And our passion extends to the country beyond its ski slopes, so why not stay a little longer and explore Japan's many sights and extraordinary experiences with us?

We'd love for you to expand your horizons and experience some of the world's best (and most dependable) snow with us. Our tailor-made holidays are designed around your budget and aspirations - you choose the dates and duration, and we'll use our many years of experience to create the best possible itinerary. Our small group tours get you to the best powder snow, with expert local guides and like-minded new friends.

Japan's Best Ski Resorts

Where to ski or snowboard.

We go to the best-of-the-best of Japan's ski resorts; a unrivalled collection. But your choice of Japanese ski resort is not one to be made without seeking advice from someone who's been there and who's impartial. Do make sure you contact us and we'll talk you through the options.

Why Japan? Why different snow?

Because you love the powder snow, because we are passionate about all things Japanese and because we both believe that a ski holiday should be all about…

It's simple. Prevailing winds blow the frozen air from Siberia east, skimming the Sea of Japan, and then dumping their bounty on the first land mass it comes across - the Japanese Islands. The result? An utterly predictable and dependable 12 to 18 metres of snow every year, kept chilled, crisp and fluffy by the cold temperatures. For you? Bottomless abundant powder.

We don't sell anything 'off the shelf' because we believe you'll have a better time if your tailor-made holiday is designed around you: your pace; your budget; your style. Even our small group tours include some flexibility, allowing you to upgrade, extend and add experiences on and off the mountain.

We have chosen a handful or ski resorts that offer varied terrain, good grooming and great facilities. Between them, you'll find something to suit you; whether you're into skiing or snowboarding; cruising the gentle slopes or adventuring off piste.

We want you to see us as your go-to Japan snow gurus, and for that reason we've chosen to focus only on the places we know and love. So you can always count on us for up-to-date knowledge and an honest answer!

The ancient Japanese tradition of soaking in natural hot springs is still very much a part of life here, and it's nowhere more alive than in the ski resorts. After all, skiing and onsen are the perfect match.

Value for money is at the forefront of our minds – both as travellers and as tour operators. We monitor all our partner suppliers in Japan to make sure you get a good deal.

Did we mention that we love Japan? Whether meeting the iconic geisha, soaking in an onsen, or taking in the temples, we believe the unique, indelible culture in Japan adds a richness to your ski holiday which is hard to beat. The locals aren't merely 'polite', they're warm, engaging and welcoming.

We have no intention of going under (unless it's a big pile of snow), but you can take confidence from us being fully ATOL bonded and registered with the Protected Trust Services (PTS), meaning that your money is protected, whatever your holiday arrangements.

A brilliant holiday

We had a family holiday (three generations) to Niseko, with some time in Tokyo. A brilliant holiday. Different Snow were so knowledgeable about Japan and skiing, so helpful and friendly, and full of good suggestions - even down to restaurants and non-skiing activities. We are looking forward to our next trip with them!

Black Diamond Tours: Your Backcountry Guide to The Real Japan

Backcountry ski and snowboard guiding in Niseko Hokkaido, Japan since 2003. BDT offers the best backcountry tours from single day to multi-day trips.

Black Diamond Tours was started in 1998 with a single guide based out of the Black Diamond Lodge. This quickly grew with the demand to include a roster of world class guides offering lift assisted powder hunting, backcountry tours, and multi-day trips. Meanwhile, the legend of Hokkaido’s powder spread to the world. This pushed us to expand our operation to offer heli, cat, and snowmobiling in private zones for the best powder skiing and snowboarding in Northern Japan.

Now, 18 years later our passion for outdoor adventures is still at the core of Black Diamond Tours. From guided day trips to multi-day Hokkaido tours, mechanized tours , booking accommodations, we create the best guided backcountry tours for any budget.

BDT is also offering summer trips around Hokkaido including: mountain biking, hiking, wakeboarding, and more.

This New, All-inclusive Japanese Resort Has Hot Springs, Fresh Seafood, and One of the Longest Ski Seasons in the World

C lub Med’s Kiroro Grand is an enchanting, family-friendly all-inclusive resort in Hokkaido, Japan. T+L senior editor Lydia Price reports back from the grand opening.

Planning a family ski vacation is notoriously daunting; there’s equipment to keep track of, isolated mountains to get to, and a range of skill levels to accommodate — not to mention finding après activities for the whole gang. Add an international destination into the mix, and it gets even more complicated. But Club Med’s Kiroro Grand, a new all-inclusive resort in Hokkaido, Japan, has made it easier than ever to plan a family getaway to one of the world’s best ski regions.

Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island, is legendary for its abundance of light, fluffy snow. Club Med’s family-focused Tomamu resort opened inland in 2018, and the brand arrived in Hokkaido's seaside Yoichi district with Kiroro Peak in 2022 (open only to travelers 12 and older). Its new Kiroro Grand resort is another winter paradise for families, with a massive kids' campus, exquisite food, and impeccable ski conditions that last all the way into May. I attended the grand opening in December 2023 to see it all for myself.

Club Med Kiroro Grand

  • All-inclusive food, drinks, ski lessons, and nightly entertainment simplifies planning a family vacation.
  • Skiers enjoy world-class powder without the crowds and lift lines, and the ski season goes all the way into May.
  • It’s close to the historic town of Otaru, an artisan hub known for its glasswork, sake distilleries, and incredible seafood.
  • It offers traditional Japanese experiences amid an eclectic community of guests and upbeat staff.

Merlin Chelliah, Kiroro Grand’s spunky, Singapore-raised general manager (or head of village in Club Med parlance), greeted me at the hotel with an infectious smile. “What Club Med does, the minute you come in the door, is make you feel at home,” she later told me over tea. With a diverse international clientele and staff, that’s no easy feat. But a resort culture that encourages everyone from ski instructors to head honchos like Chelliah to spend as much time as possible with guests makes everyone feel included — and puts parents at ease.

“You have ski instructors all around the world, right? You meet them, you go for lessons, and that’s it. The lessons are done, and it’s finished. We create a relationship here. We create a circle of trust,” explained Chelliah, who helped open Tomamu and Kiroro Peak before taking her current position at Kiroro Grand. “After ski lessons, the instructor comes and engages in conversation at the table, eats with you, and says, ‘How are you? Can I give you some tips?’”

In addition to sharing meals with students, sports instructors (the resort also offers snow trekking and, in the summer, mountain biking and hiking) attend nightly events at the Kiroro Grand’s theater, where I enjoyed performances by live bands, acrobats, and DJs. Chelliah is also there, often serving as MC and leading the crowd in Club Med’s signature “crazy sign” dances to top off the night. Opposite the stage is a large lounge area with fireplaces and reading nooks, with a bar slinging cocktails for the adults and slushies for the kids.

I watched the high-flying gymnasts and live musicians leave the kids in awe, but nothing brought out their giant smiles more than ski instructors joining them on the dance floor.

Chelliah credits Club Med instructors with turning her own son, now 11, into an enthusiastic skier after his rough introduction to the sport in 2019. Club Med’s Hokkaido ski instructors worked their magic with game-packed lessons and camaraderie off the slopes. And now? "He skis as well as some of the instructors here, and he’s proud of it,” she told me. “He’s gained so much confidence.”

The resort certainly excels in childcare, and it solves a host of other classic ski-vacation headaches as well. Gear is stored in lockers just steps away from the dining hall, and Kiroro Grand's doors are only a three-minute gondola ride away from the base of the main ski area. When it comes to après-ski offerings, all-you-can-eat dining, hot springs, an indoor pool, game rooms, and a spa keep everyone entertained.

Here, my full review of the new Club Med Kiroro Grand.

The resort’s standard doubles, or Superior Rooms, come in three sizes ranging from 387.5 square feet (recommended for two people) to 473.6 square feet (recommended for up to four people). Light earth tones accented by pops of deep blue create a calming ambiance. Each room has a couch, ample natural light, and, of course, Japan’s world-famous high-tech toilets.

Deluxe Double Rooms are slightly larger with mountain or forest views (recommended for up to three people). Even better are the Tatami Deluxe Rooms, which have traditional Japanese floored beds, sofa beds, and separate tubs and showers.

The Junior Family Suites (recommended for three people), Family Suites (for four), and Master Family Suites (for five) are the resort’s premium accommodations. Bay windows with reading nooks, intricate light fixtures, and marble-walled bathrooms elevate the spaces. Master Family Suites go up to 1,603 square feet, Family Suites are up to 904 square feet, and the Junior Family Suites have a 721-square-foot maximum. Suites come with turndown service, continental breakfasts delivered to the room each morning, and mountain views.

Food and Drink

Yoichi, the resort’s main restaurant, provides a globe-spanning array of comfort food at every meal. Chefs prepare food in front of guests, so you can dine on freshly cooked seafood filets, Thai stir frys, and Korean barbecue at your leisure. The ramen station is always popular; it serves a rotating menu of savory broths and noodles with an assortment of toppings. Western favorites like pizza, pasta, and bagels are also served daily.

Yoichi’s dining rooms include tables in the theater and main lounge, where snacks are served in-between main meals. At afternoon tea time, chefs make crêpes to order while baristas serve matcha lattes and hot chocolate at the coffee bar. Guests can also nibble on a spread of pastries and finger sandwiches and enjoy a full-service bar with a handful of signature cocktails — and slushies for the little ones.

The Kiroro Grand also has three specialty restaurants (not included in the all-inclusive pricing). At Ebisu, I dined on an eight-course sushi menu that highlighted the best of the region’s seafood. Ogon, the hot pot restaurant, made for a lively evening, and at barbecue spot Kaen, I enjoyed a succulent array of Wagyu beef, scallops, and pork, all local.

Experiences and Amenities

Kiroro Grand provides everything you need to hit the slopes, with equipment rentals, group lessons, ski lockers, and lift tickets included in the price of your stay. Private lessons are available for an extra fee. The trails are open for night skiing, and guided snowshoe treks are also available.

For me, the standout amenity was the traditional onsen , a hot outdoor soaking tub fed by mineral-rich spring water. I went for a soak every day after skiing, sometimes following it with a few minutes in the sauna. Guests can also unwind at daily yoga sessions and have access to the indoor pool, cardio center, and hot tub in addition to a game room with ping-pong, darts, and foosball.

The main floor of the resort has a ski boutique stocked with Rossignol equipment and other essentials for the slopes, plus a convenient store that sells local goods and a wide array of Japanese snacks.

Club Med has a dinner dress code every night. Some examples when I stayed were “white and silver,” “casual chic,” and “colorful elegant.” It’s by no means mandatory, but Club Meders love to add some flair to their evenings by abiding by the theme. Live bands, DJs, and aerial acrobat performances follow dinner.

Activities that come with an extra fee (i.e., not included in the all-inclusive rate) range from a Hokkaido glasswork workshop to tours of Otaru, the nearby seaside town with a rich artistic history.

Next to the onsen you’ll find the spa, which offers massages, body treatments, and facials. I enjoyed a 90-minute massage with a skilled masseuse. After my massage, I continued to relax while watching the snow fall with a cup of Jasmine tea in the spa’s lounge.

Family-friendly Offerings

Club Med Kiroro Grand was designed with families in mind. Group lessons are included in room rates for skiers of all ages. The sprawling kids' club includes a climbing gym, vibrant decor, and piles of toys. Babycare can also be reserved for an additional fee.

Nightly shows at the theater are all kid-friendly. Once a week, the kids get a chance to take the stage themselves after a dance workshop.

Accessibility and Sustainability

Kiroro Grand prevents food waste by having chefs stop cooking 45 minutes before the end of meal services at the buffet. They strive to use local food whenever possible.

The resort also limits product waste by keeping a grab-as-you-need amenity box in the lobby in lieu of in-room toiletries.

Kiroro Grand has two accessible rooms, both Junior Family Suites.

Travelers flock to Hokkaido for its legendary snow. The Kiroro Ski Resort, which is just a three-minute gondola ride away from Club Med Kiroro Grand, has almost 19 miles of skiable terrain with an average of around 4,000 skiers per day. If you hate crowded slopes and lift lines, this is a ski area for you.

Flights from Tokyo to the Kiroro Grand’s closest airport, Sapporo’s New Chitose, are about 1.5 hours. From there, the Kiroro Grand provides shuttles for the 1.5-hour drive to the resort. You’ll ascend a winding, forest-lined road with intermittent views of the Sea of Japan and Yoichi’s sweeping mountain range.

Otaru, a famous fishing village about 40 minutes away from the Kiroro Grand, makes for an enriching day trip. Enjoy tours and tastings at the renowned Tanaka Sake Brewery, take a glassblowing class, or learn about the town’s history on a canal tour.

Club Med made a point of becoming active participants in the local community after the small village of Akaigawa, population 1,300, welcomed them with open arms. Chelliah recalled the mayor telling her team to “help my people” after COVID-19 wreaked havoc on the local economy. Now, 31 percent of her staff are Akaigawa natives. Meanwhile, taiko students perform weekly in exchange for a salary and the chance to spend a few days at the resort practicing English.

How to Get the Most Value Out of Your Stay

You’ll get the best room rates during the resort’s low seasons in late March and late April. Since the area has the longest ski season in Japan, you’ll still get to enjoy plenty of powder. The resort and mountain close on May 6 before reopening for the summer season in mid-June. There is a seven-night minimum stay. Kids under four stay for free.
