Glaciers, Wildlife, Wilderness

An intimate way to experience the alaskan wilderness.

A passion for Alaskan glacier and wildlife kayaking tours in the Prince William Sound wilderness defines Anadyr Adventures, the premier sea kayaking company in Valdez, Alaska.

Choose from a variety of world-class day trips or multiday camping, lodge or mothership based tours. We can also work with you to design a trip customized to your interests.

Anadyr Adventures operates under special use permits from the Chugach National Forest and the Alaska Division of Parks. We are proud to work with Valdez City Schools, Valdez Parks and Recreation, and Advocates for Victims of Violence to introduce kids to paddling.

And we are proud to have received the the 2004 Spirit of Alaska award, presented by ATIA to the Alaskan business best exemplifying the Alaskan spirit of community and public service.

Anadyr Adventures offers four types of trips: day trips for those with limited time in Valdez, multi-day camping trips, Mothership trips for those desiring the amenities of a support vessel, and lodge based trips offering Prince William Sound day excursions from the comfort of a remote Alaskan wilderness lodge.

Kayaks at Columbia Glacier

  • Trip Choice
  • Associations

Established in 1989, Anadyr Adventures offers naturalist guided sea-kayaking, sailing and hiking trips to novice and experienced kayakers, families, kids and the physically challenged. We are a company dedicated to sharing with you the beauty of Prince William Sound wilderness. Our groups are small, our impact is low and sustainable tourism is in the forefront of our agenda.

Valdez has been our home since 1984. Through the years we have kayaked, sailed and hiked Prince William Sound extensively. Consequently, we are uniquely positioned to help you plan your trip.

You may choose from a wide range of trips with varying levels of difficulty and comfort; from easy, suitable for novice paddlers and kids, to strenuous, geared for the more experienced paddlers. Our guided trips throughout Prince William Sound are small and intimate, giving you the perfect opportunity to view your surroundings and the abundant wildlife in a way that most larger tour companies simply cannot offer.

The trips we have listed are not exclusive…. in fact, many great tours have not made it on these pages! If you don’t see anything that immediately excites you, feel free to call for new ideas. You will find our staff knowledgeable, our pricing to be reasonable and affordable. We pride ourselves on providing honest and accurate information so that your expectations are well matched with what we can deliver. Don’t hesitate to call or write with your questions at any time.

Why choose Anadyr Adventures for your Alaska sea kayaking adventure?

Anadyr Adventures has over 30 years of experience leading quality sea-kayaking and hiking trips in Prince William Sound.

We carefully select only the safest, reliable and knowledgeable guides to lead you. Our guides are top professionals, who not only teach their skill, but offer interpretive discussions of the local history, geology, flora, and fauna. Whenever possible we make a point to employ locally in order to benefit the local community and its economy directly, thereby providing further incentive for local support and preservation of natural areas and wildlife habitat.

Because we are locally owned, we have more in-depth knowledge to share with you. The majority of our guides are Alaskans as well. Their knowledge of the Alaska wilderness, not to mention our native fauna & flora, was gained from years of first-hand experience in the backcountry, and not read from a book a few months prior to your tour. Your guide will not simply be another guest on the trip with you, but will have valuable insight to offer and practical knowledge to share on the areas you’ll be paddling through. We strive to make sure our guides are equally well versed in the natural history & geology of the area and often employ university professors and museum curators to assist with our training.

Finally, we pride ourselves on offering personalized service. We maintain small group sizes allowing us to ensure the highest quality of tours. We make every effort to coordinate our groups so the interests of our individual clients and guide complement one another. Please don’t hesitate to use “our client feedback” page to ask questions from our former guests.

Anadyr Adventures is a proud member of the Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau, Valdez Convention and Visitors Bureau, Valdez Chamber of Commerce, Tok Chamber of Commrs, Valdez Trails Associations, Alaska State Parks Advisory Board and Alaska’s Wilderness Recreation & Tourism Association. We support local conservation organizations and encourages our clients to make a $1-A-Day voluntary donation to organizations working to conserve Alaska’s wilderness. We are proud to have received ATIA’s Spirit of Alaska award in 2004.

Valdez is located on the north shore of Port Valdez, a deep water fjord in Prince William Sound. Referred to as “Little Switzerland”, Valdez is surrounded by breathtaking snow capped mountains. Valdez lies 305 road miles east of Anchorage, and 364 road miles south of Fairbanks.

Valdez can be reached by the Alaska Marine Highway. The state ferry provides transport to and from Whittier, Cordova, Kodiak, Seward and Homer. It takes 6 hours from Whittier to reach Valdez via the ferry system.

Alaska Airlines has two, and sometimes three, daily flights from Anchorage. The flight from Anchorage to Valdez takes 40 minutes. Our advice is to make your reservation for an earlier flight or even for the day before to avoid potential flight cancellations.

The Richardson Highway connects Valdez to Anchorage, Fairbanks and Canada. Driving time from Anchorage to Valdez is 6 hours. Allow ample time for driving because the highways are very scenic and you’ll want to stop to admire the view and take pictures. Along the way there are a number of roadside lodges and campgrounds. If you are driving from Anchorage we recommend food and lodging at Sheep Mountain Lodge.

Once you reach Thompson Pass and enter Keystone Canyon, you are getting close to Valdez. Follow the Richardson Highway into town, ( about 10 miles), passing a number of RV Parks. Turn left on Chitna Drive, go to the end ( 2 short blocks) turn right on North Harbor Drive. We are located three buildings down on the right hand side at 225 North Harbor Drive. If you see a place called Fish Central or Mike’s Palace, you have just passed our office. For a complete listing of accommodations, tours, and services in Valdez, please visit our helpful travel links.

Natural History

From the many icefields covering the vallies of the Chugach Mountains flow more than 150 glaciers with 17 reaching sea level. The climate is maritime with moderate temperatures and an average precipitation of 100 inches annually.

Prince William Sound has the greatest diversity of wildlife habitat along the entire northern Pacific Coast. Two hundred forty species of birds have been observed, ranging from the tiny rufus hummingbird to the mighty bald eagle, and during spring and fall migration tens of millions of migratory birds traverse the area. Humpback, killer, and minke whales, seals and Steller sea lions reside in this marine environment. Thirty different land mammals have been recorded in Prince William Sound. Most easily spotted are Sitka deer, black bears and mountain goats. Commercial and sports fishermen harvest five species of Pacific salmon as well as halibut, shrimp, crab, herring and bottom fish in the rich waters of the Sound.

This vast resource of natural beauty and wildlife is easily accessible to you through Anadyr Adventures.

Sea Kayaking Alaska

Alaska sea kayaking, whale watching kayak trips & tours in alaska.

Join us for a vacation of a lifetime: sea kayaking in Alaska among the icebergs and whales. Sea kayaking Alaska ranks among the world’s best wilderness and wildlife adventures. Alaska is vast, rugged, and possesses astounding beauty. Alaska is truly one of the last great wild places left on our planet.

When deciding on our Alaska kayak tour routes, we looked for outstanding natural features, such as tidewater glaciers, remote wilderness islands, and stunning mountain views. After long and careful research, we decided upon these superb Alaska kayaking trip itineraries . We believe that they represent the absolute best Alaska kayak trips available!

sea kayak trips anchorage

“Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. I’ve recommended Sea Quest’s Alaska kayak tours to everyone. I was very impressed with how well organized the trip was. I learned a lot and had a great time doing it. Both guides were loads of fun – which made the trip! They made it look effortless but I know they were always working.” Jill Aikman, Seattle, WA

Sea Kayaking Alaska & Whale Watching Tours

Our Alaska kayaking tour routes were chosen for their superior whale watching success. Humpback whales converge by the hundreds in Frederick Sound during summer months and one of our Alaska kayak tours makes camp on its isolated shore. Orca whales also occur in large numbers in southeast Alaska. The humpback whale and killer whale are the most acrobatic and socially complicated species in the world. Our Alaska whale watching trips have been very successful over the years.

sea kayak trips anchorage

All of our Alaska kayaking trips give you the opportunity to see abundant marine wildlife at close range. Other marine mammals we consistently see while kayaking in Alaska include, Dall’s porpoises, harbor porpoises, harbor seals, and threatened Steller’s sea lions. Sea otters gather at favorite kelp forests on one the kayak routes, and gaze endearingly at passing paddlers. Overhead, bald eagles perch on nearly every prominence as they patiently await migrating salmon. Many other marine birds gather to nest in noisy rookeries.

Going ashore, you will see tide pools teeming with fascinating creatures, and watch as they appear and disappear in the wake of enormous fourteen foot tides. Any stream will be chock full of salmon and char and if you arrive during a spawning run you will witness one of nature’s most amazing spectacles.

Upland explorations will reveal numerous game trails, and maybe even the tracks of bears and wolves. Within the ancient Tongass rainforest all sounds seem to be swallowed by the dense foliage and hanging mosses – its as if you’ve entered a towering emerald cathedral. Here survives the largest temperate rainforest in the world.

Our Alaska kayak tours are staffed by experienced guides and naturalists. We limit group size to ten participants, thereby ensuring an intimate trip and a close-up view of Alaska’s wonders. Hopefully, we can be a part of your Alaska adventure vacation plans. Please call if you have any questions.

Detailed information on our Alaska kayak tours can be found by clicking on the “Alaska Kayak Trips” menu on this page.

Frommer’s Alaska writes:

Right around Valdez, short sea-kayaking day trips see wildlife on the Duck Flats and may be just what you want for a first try at the sport; but that area is hardly wilderness, as it’s also reached by road and is within sight of the oil facilities. Day trips to Shoup or Columbia glaciers get you into more of the beautiful, remote country that makes Prince William Sound so exceptional. Pangaea Adventures (tel. 800/660-9637 or 907/835-8442 ; www.alaskasummer.com ) offers guided sea kayaking from Valdez, or rentals for experienced paddlers (for whom the Sound is a paradise).

They also offer multiday guided camping trips deeper into the Sound, or, for those who prefer a bed, lodge and “mother ship” expeditions, wherein clients paddle by day and stay on board or in a lodge at night. Pangaea offers many other services as well: water taxi and kayak drop-off, ice climbing and glacier hiking, river rafting, and even trips that combine these activities in the Sound and Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Check out the website.

Kayaking, Canoeing & SUP

Paddle serene Eklutna Lake or the protected waters near Whittier and Seward. Strike out on your own, or take a guided trip to popular kayaking spots. You’ll get special access to secluded glaciers, a close look at wildlife, and a deeper understanding of Alaska from shoreline to sea.

Travel by kayak has a long history in the area. Alaska Native people used sea kayaks to travel the coast. In a story related by one elder, the Chugach Mountains near Anchorage actually got their name as a group of paddlers first sighted the mountains from their kayaks in Cook Inlet.

Get a little hint of Alaska as it was when sleek watercraft and paddle power were the primary way to explore the stunning coast of Alaska. Choose from relaxing and scenic floats, longer and wilder rides, or multiday wilderness adventures. Consider a day on the water with one of these outfitters.

At 8:30 in the morning, we’ll meet at Bartlett Cove to board the Sea Wolf and begin with an orientation session in the main salon. Your journey begins with a cruise towards Geike Inlet where we’ll embark on our first paddle, but not before a short introduction to kayaking session. Geike Inlet is a stunning fjord where black bears, wolverines and mountain goats are often spotted, together with a variety of seabirds and ducks.

After a leisurely paddle, we’ll return to the ship and cruise towards our anchorage while learning about the natural history of Glacier Bay. Hear about some of the research projects that are being conducted within the national park, as well as the abundant wildlife that you may encounter over the following days. After dinner aboard the Sea Wolf, enjoy an unforgettable sunset overlooking Glacier Bay.

  • Accommodation: Sea Wolf Ship
  • Meals included: Lunch, Dinner

Following an early breakfast, we’ll embark on a hike to the Reid Glacier to get an up-close look at its glacially carved landscape. Your guide will explain the geology of the glacier and its plant and animal succession as you explore its grounded icebergs and hunt for ice worms. Returning to the ship through the intertidal landscape, take time to uncover rocks to see what brown bears, wolverines and small mammals feast on during low tide.

Refuel over lunch as we cruise towards Tarr Inlet where the Grand Pacific and Marjorie glaciers flow, then board your kayak for a picturesque paddle beneath the sheer cliff. Keep your eyes peeled for kittiwakes and puffins that nest along the cliffs before kayaking along the face of the Marjorie Glacier to watch it calve. In the mid-afternoon, we’ll continue cruising through Russell Cut while observing the local wildlife and make our way to our anchorage for the evening.

  • Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This morning begins with an excursion to Gloomy Knob where we’ll search for mountain goats and other wildlife that resides in the area. Soak up the incredible views across the bay from this elevated location before returning to the ship. In the afternoon, enjoy a leisurely paddle at our anchorage as we make our way ever closer to the entrance of East Arm.

  • Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

While you’re enjoying breakfast onboard, we’ll fire up the engines and make our way towards Muir Inlet on the East Arm of Glacier Bay where numerous activities will be available (based on weather, park closures and wildlife). Embark on a spectacular hike beside McBride Glacier or go paddling from Muir Glacier to the Riggs Glacier while spotting bears, wolves, moose and birdlife along the shore.

Once we’re back on the Sea Wolf, we’ll continue towards our evening anchorage for dinner and a night spent stargazing.

*Note: Other destinations for this day may include Dundas Bay, George Island or Idaho Inlet.

If the tides are right, we’ll begin the day with a morning paddle to North Sandy Cove, an incredibly rich ecosystem that supports black bears, moose and coyotes, not to mention an abundant marine life. We’ll slowly kayak along the shores, then continue paddling over to Puffin Island to explore the low tide vertical intertidal zone. This region is home to a fascinating array of sponges, periwinkles and sea stars, as well as sea cucumbers and urchins awaiting the high tide’s return.

After returning to the vessel, we’ll continue cruising to South Marble Island to observe a large stellar sea lion haul-out and a seabird nesting rookery. We’ll then make our way to Fingers Bay where we’ll spend the night.

Begin the day with a hearty breakfast before cruising towards Point Adolphus where we’ll spend the morning looking for humpback whales. Around midday, we’ll make the return journey to Gustavus where we’ll be docked by 1 pm. Here, you’ll embark on a walking tour of the Huna Tribal House before being transported to the airport for your flight to Juneau.

Keep an eye out for humpback whales, orcas, sea lions and migratory birds throughout this morning’s cruise. After anchoring, we will spend the afternoon exploring the surrounding bays, with a highlight seeing brown bears fishing for salmon.

As you’re enjoying breakfast, we’ll continue down the coast of Admiralty Island en route to the Brothers Islands. This archipelago is an important feeding ground for migratory humpback whales, as well as being frequented by Stellar sea lions. After lunch, we’ll spend time exploring the Brothers Islands by kayak and anchor nearby.

This morning we will make our way to Ford’s Terror and explore its magnificent wilderness by kayak. Lunch will be served on the beach before we embark on a hike to the top of the mountain for sweeping views across the region. In the late afternoon, we’ll make our way to our evening anchorage.

It’s an early morning start as we head into Endicott Arm, with breakfast served as we navigate the fjord’s icebergs. At the face of Dawes Glacier, we’ll stop to watch as it calves, with seals and their newborn pups often seen playing in the surrounding waters.

After a relaxing lunch, we’ll launch the kayaks to get an up-close view of Dawes Glacier as we paddle along its face. Continuing down the fjord, we’ll be met by the Sea Wolf.

Begin the day with a paddle around Wood Spit while observing the nesting birds that frequent this area before exploring the ancient rainforest on foot. Back on board the Sea Wolf, we’ll cruise up Stephens Passage while keeping an eye out for orcas, humpback whales and sea birds.

Breakfast will be served as we make our way to Juneau where we plan to dock by 10:00 am.

  • Meals included: Breakfast

Board the Sea Wolf at 9:00, with time to settle in before our orientation and safety briefing. Our first kayaking excursion will take us down the Gastineau Channel and out into Stephens Passage, en route to our anchorage point at Wood Spit. Day 5 & 6

While you’re enjoying breakfast, the Sea Wolf will make its way to Admiralty Island, which is home to southeast Alaska’s largest concentration of brown bears. Over the next two days, we will explore its bays by kayak and on foot while spotting humpback whales, orcas, sea lions, and migratory bird species. A highlight is undoubtedly seeing brown bears fishing for salmon.

This morning, we will head to Thomas Bay, hopefully accompanied by sightings of humpback whales and a variety of other marine mammals. After anchoring near Scenery Cove, we will take the skiff over to Baird Glacier and hike across its moraine till to step foot on the glacier itself.

In the early morning, we’ll make our way through the Wrangell Narrows, with this 22-mile-long channel providing safe passage for small vessels. After passing the picturesque community of Petersburg, we’ll navigate through 60 different markers and anchor at the end of the passage in the evening.

Today begins with a cruise through the serpentine Eastern Passage, which takes in ancient forests along its route. Our kayaking excursion for the day may be accompanied by eagles and whales, as well as black and brown bears fishing along the banks of Anan Creek. If possible, we will hike along the Anan Creek boardwalk to its observation area.

After a morning kayak, we will embark on a hike on Etolin Island before making a beeline for our evening anchorage.

Breakfast will be served as we make our way to Ketchikan, hopefully with a spot of whale watching along the way. If all goes according to plan, we will dock in Ketchikan by late morning.

  • Meals included:  Breakfast

Fly into Ketchikan Airport and jump aboard the water taxi that will whisk you from the airport to Ketchikan. From here, it’s just a short taxi ride to where the Sea Wolf is moored. After settling in, we will hold a brief orientation meeting as we head toward our evening anchorage.

  • Meals included:  Dinner

It’s an early start today as we cruise towards the Eastern Passage and our first paddle out into the southeast Alaskan wilderness. Along the way, we may encounter a variety of marine mammals and migratory birds that inhabit the ancient forests along the shores.

This morning will be spent exploring Etolin Island by kayak and on foot, with a scenic hike taking us to Kunk Lake. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for Roosevelt elk, as well as brown and black bears. Our anchorage this evening is just a stone’s throw from the entrance to Wrangell Narrows.

In the early morning, we’ll make our way through the Wrangell Narrows, with this 22-mile-long channel providing safe passage for small vessels. After passing the picturesque community of Petersburg, we’ll navigate through 60 different markers. Depending on the tides, there may or may not be an opportunity to kayak/hike today. Our anchorage this evening is at aptly-named Scenery Cove.

Today begins with a leisurely paddle through Scenery Cove, followed by an afternoon hike along the plains of Baird Glacier. If you prefer not to hike, you can opt for a skiff tour to see the colony of Arctic terns at Thomas Bay. In the late afternoon, we will make our way to our evening anchorage at the Brothers Islands where orcas and humpback whales are regularly spotted.

After breakfast, we’ll spend time exploring the Brothers Islands by kayak, hopefully accompanied by sightings of Stellar sea lions, whales, and a variety of birdlife. In the late afternoon, we’ll head to Gambier Bay, which is renowned for its resident brown bears.

After crossing Stephens Passage, we will make our way to Ford’s Terror and anchor in a protected cove near its entrance. Spend the day exploring this magnificent wilderness area by kayak, with a picnic lunch served in the middle of the day. If you don’t want to paddle the whole day, there will also be the option for a skiff tour.

Begin the day with a short hike to see Ford’s Terror from above before continuing to Dawes Glacier where we hope to arrive by lunchtime. Dine while listening to the sound of icebergs calving off the glacier before launching the kayaks for an up-close view. Today ends anchored at Wood Spit, which offers magnificent views of Sumdum Glacier.

Begin the day with a paddle around Wood Spit while observing the nesting birds that frequent this area. As we cruise towards Tracy Arm and Sawyer Glacier, lunch will be served onboard. Spend time marveling at this natural wonder before we continue to our anchorage near the mouth of Endicott Arm.

Today will be spent cruising and spotting a variety of marine mammals, with these waters known for their whale sightings. Our destination for the night is an anchorage not far from Juneau.

Enjoy your final breakfast onboard as we cruise into Juneau where taxis will be waiting to whisk you to the airport by around 10:00 am.

Icy Bay Sea Kayaking Trip

Discover icy bay. world class kayaking..

  • Spectacular views of Mt. St. Elias
  • Excellent nearby day hikes
  • 5 nights camping
  • Five days sea kayaking
  • Unbeatable camping, wildlife & scenery
  • A night in Yakutat
  • Private charter flight Yakutat to/from Icy Bay

Welcome to our Icy Bay sea kayaking trip in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, Alaska.

I’m always exited to return to this area and explore this geographic phenomenon again. You will be too.

Icy Bay is one of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park’s least visited areas, and also one of Alaska’s best kept secrets. Few visitors venture here.

The place offers simply superb, second-to-none, sea kayaking. Paddle up close to the giant, calving glaciers and countless icebergs. Photograph the various species of marine mammals and myriad different sea birds. The world’s tallest coastal mountain and mountain range tower above you.

Enjoy all this with the very strong probability that you won’t encounter another human being the whole time. You’ll likely see grizzly bear tracks in the sand along the beach long before you see any human footprints!

A beachfront campsite with my favorite view in all Alaska. The world’s tallest coastal mountain towers overhead. Glaciers crawl from the mountain peaks down to the shoreline and the deep clear waters of Icy Bay lap at your doorstep.

For solitude, for wilderness experience, and for an exceptional sea kayaking vacation, Icy Bay has it all. The area affords us some nice day hiking options as well.

This is one Alaska vacation experience you’ll not forget!

Icy Bay Sea Kayaking Trip Video

You’ll love five nights camping in Icy Bay, one night at a lodge in Yakutat. 5 days of paddling, hiking and photographing.

Camp by the beach and enjoy a nightly fire and great food. The view from dinner doesn’t get any better.

Paddling adventures will takes us across the bay and up the various fjords and passages of the bay. We’ll try to get up close to the various glaciers and icebergs but must treat them all with respect. Water in the bay can easily reach depths of 300 feet!

This is rated as an easy trip and we offer a flexible itinerary to accommodate you/your group.

Combine a few days sea kayaking with some hiking, beach camping, exploring and relaxing in one of the most impressive landscapes anywhere. Basecamp and enjoy paddling different fjords each day.

Or if you’re looking for something a little more adventurous we can break camp each day and paddle to a new location.

Coastal Alaska

100 years ago, this bay was covered in ice. A multitude of massive gainers crept southward from the St. Elias Mountains and met the shores of the northern Pacific Ocean along the Cape Yakataga shoreline. There was no bay here when Captain Cook sailed by in 1778.

Today, after a century of recent glacial retreat, Icy Bay is a cluster of cool, deep bays. As the glaciers recede further northward toward the lofty sanctity of the St. Elias Range, Icy Bay grows even larger.

Three large fjords constitute the best of our paddling domain, and we’ll explore the nooks and crannies of all of them; the Taan and the Tsaa in particular.

Icy Bay was labelled one of the 10 treasures of the world by National Geographic, and truly lives up to its reputation. Icebergs the size of a small house float by. Mountains soar overhead.

Mt. St. Elias

Any commentary on Icy Bay inevitably includes observations on Mt. St. Elias.

Why? Because it’s a remarkable mountain, and a powerful spectacle. When the clouds clear and the mountain comes out, it commands our attention.

Rising over 18 000 feet directly from the shoreline, the mountain is the tallest coastal peak in the world. Sitting on the US/Canada border, it is the second tallest peak in both countries. Its presence above our camp and our excursions is constant. You’re ever aware of this mountain.

The Saint Elias mountain range is the world’s tallest coastal mountain range, and the scenery here is without equal. Snow-capped peaks surround you. You’ll also get great views of 4 glaciers, the Guyot, Yahtse and Tyndall Glaciers being the most prominent.

Who's This Trip For?

This trip is a great option for those looking for an easy vacation in a remote and beautifully wild setting. It’s also customizable enough to fit both novice paddlers and experienced kayakers and outdoors people.

Looking for a quiet getaway? This trip is for you. Solitude and a peaceful serene wilderness locale make the Icy Bay Sea Kayaking Trip the perfect summer destination. The relatively calm, glassy water of the fjords make it a nice place to paddle for those with little or no experience.

You might also take short easy dayhikes along the beach or through the woods. Explore the edges of the glaciers at the far reaches of the fjords. There are numerous small creeks and waterfalls to enjoy and photo opps around every bend.

For those folks looking for a more rigorous outing we’ll break camp each day and kayak the entire length and breadth of the bay. There are campsites along the beach near the glaciers. If you’d like we can make this an expedition adventure of the entire Icy Bay.

Icy Bay Sea Kayak Trip

Susie, Galen and Rhane at Icy Bay and Mt. St. Elias.

The Lost Coast

Where are we.

Depending on the exact trip itinerary and extension options you’d prefer, we depart from Yakutat to Icy Bay, or possibly from McCarthy. We’ll fly in to Icy Bay, land on a spectacular beach, and set up camp.

Weather issues

The Taan Fjord still shows on many maps as ice covered! The calm, protected pristine waters of these fjords make classic Alaska sea kayaking. Even in inclement weather we’re typically able to get out and paddle. We can venture up the various fjords towards the glaciers, hike the shore lands and poke around the glaciers as we explore this very dynamic area.

Gear Requirements

I’ll provide you with a detailed gear list upon your reservation. download the Free eBook Info Packet for a brief overview if you like.

All your camp gear can be provided, included tents, sleeping pads, stoves, kitchenware, etc. You’ll need your own sleeping bag (rent one if you need to).

All your paddling gear is provided, from the kayak and PFD to your paddling gloves and booties (see the “What’s Included?” section below).

You’ll want to bring warm layers for camp, a fleece or down jacket, beanie, long johns, etc. A pair of sandals are great, as are light hikers, long pants and long-sleeved shirt (better sun and bug protection), and shorts and t-shirt (cross your fingers for some warm weather). Join the Icy Bay Polar Bear Club and bring your swimming costume as well! Read More

Trip Options & Extensions

There are various possibilities to extend the trip. We can head to the nearby Samovar hills for a multi-day hike, or the Lost Coast for a backpack/packraft trip , or cross over the mighty St. Elias Mountains and combine this trip with one of the backpacking/basecamp trips in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park , such as Iceberg Lake – Bremner Mines . For a challenging adventure, we can grab our backpacks and traverse across the mighty Malaspina Glacier in an honestly epic adventure. Not for the meek!!! We can, if you’re interested, also extend the Icy Bay sea kayaking portion of the trip to more thoroughly explore every nook and cranny of this amazing place!

Another option is to packraft Icy Bay, instead of sea kayaking. Packrafts are smaller, and soft-sided inflatable boats, so they’ll be slower at getting around the bay and the fjords, but they’re a lot of fun, a little more stable in the flat water, more portable if we want to do some adventurous hiking and float a river back to the bay, and a little cheaper as well! Inquire for details.

One possible extension is to include a short basecamp/dayhike or backpacking trip in the nearby Samovar Hills – see the  Custom and exploratory trips  page for details. The Samovar Hills are a relatively little visited region of the park that offer more stunning views of the St. Elias mountain range.

Day trip extensions might include a day up to the Hubbard Glacier, near Yakutat, or an amazing flight seeing and photography trip in the amazing St. Elias Mountains.

We’ll also possibly charter a boat ride out of Yakutat, up Disenchantment Bay to see the Hubbard Glacier and Russell Fjord. The Hubbard Glacier is known as  ‘the world’s most calvingest glacier’ , and there’s a great possibility of getting to witness the spectacle of enormous chunks of ice crashing down from the glacier into the ocean – an amazing sight. We’ll plan this trip for mid-June, but it’s really a good option anytime in June and July. This is becoming a very popular trip; camping on the beach, paddling, hiking, swimming, photography, and some of the most spectacular landscapes in Alaska; classic coastal terrain.

Trip Itinerary

Caveat – don’t expect your trip to run exactly as I outline it here. This section is here to give you an outline of a typical itinerary, and is only intended as a sample.

Exact logistics will vary by year and by trip.

That said …. read on

Day 0 – You need to arrive in Yakutat the night before our trip begins.

Day 1 – We’ll meetup the morning of your trip departure date for a brief orientation and gear review. next, meet your pilot for a spectacular charter flight to Icy Bay. We’ll fly to Icy Bay, land on the beach, have a bite to eat, and then establish our campsite.

We’ll make camp nearby, set up the tents, cook tent, etc, and then get ready for an afternoon “introductory paddle” ; we’ll start with a comprehensive safety review. We’ll also have a demonstration and lesson in basic sea kayaking, everything from getting in and out of your boat, to an overview of paddling techniques, etc.

We spend some time in a nearby cove, the perfect place to work on some basic sea kayaking boat safety protocols. Here you’ll get comfortable with the boats and the water. Once you’re good to go, we’ll head for deeper waters.

Day 2/5 – We’ll spend each day paddling and hiking as you desire. One day we might paddle to the very back of Taan Fjord, and check out the face of Tindall Glacier. Another we might paddle across to the Karr Hills and enjoy a walk on the beach, or explore Yahtse Glacier. Most days we’ll bring lunch, and spend the day around the bay.

Another nice walk is the beachline to Cetani River. That can be an entire, or as brief as an hour or two. That’s entirely up you.

Day 6 – On our final day, we’ll break camp and our charter flight will pick us up and fly you to Yakutat (included). You can either overnight in Yakutat (recommended), or fly on to your next destination.

No Cruise Liners Here?

A shallow sand strip near the mouth of the bay keeps the area free of these monstrosities. We’re able to enjoy this incredible place in relative solitude.

Alaska sea kayaking trip Icy Bay Harbor seal and pup on iceberg in Icy bay Alaska sea kayaking trip, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.

Why do so few people visit Icy Bay?

One reason Icy Bay is such a great sea kayaking location is the distinct and very noticeable absense of cruise ships.

None of the major cruise liners venture into the Bay, which makes the area very different from many of Alaska’s other more popular sea kayaking destinations. A shallow sand strip near the mouth of the bay has so far continued to keep the area free of these monstrosities, and we’re able to enjoy this incredible place in relative solitude. In 2013 the only other vessel we saw in the entire week was a small private sailboat that drifted nearby for a few hours.

What wildlife will we most likely see?

Icy Bay is a great bird watching area, and we’ll see an array of ducks, sea birds, shore birds and raptors. Bald eagles are common, as are falcon as well. Both marbled and the endangered Kittlitz’s murrelets are found in Icy Bay.

Harbor Seals come into the bay as well, hunting salmon, which are always a treat to see. With an estimated population in the bay of over 3500 seals, you’ll more than likely see quite a few!

This is one of the few areas where they’re rarely bothered by orcas, so they’re often very visible in the calm waters, as well as loafing around, soaking up the sun resting on the icebergs. June/early July is birthing time, so it’s possible you’ll see some cute seal pups as well.

If we’re lucky, we’ll also see mountain goats as well. Grizzly bears are abundant in the area, and it’s likely that we’ll see them as well.

How much sea kayaking experience do I need to take this trip?

Perfect trip for the beginner. Perfect for the intermediate paddler and darn near perfect for experienced paddlers as well.

That’s as honest as I can tell ya. Read the linked articles here for some tutorials.

How far are we paddling each day?

The beauty of a basecamp sea kayak trip is the flexibility. We’ve done days with good, solid experienced paddlers where we covered almost thirty miles in a day. Other days, with other paddlers, 5 or 6 miles.

What’s the maximum group size we can take?

I like to keep the group to five, maximum. Contact me to talk about bringing a larger group if you need to.

How do we get to Yakutat?

Flights on major airlines come through Anchorage or Juneau.

Can we paddle tandem kayaks?

At present (2024) we are only offering single kayaks, sorry. If you need a tandem, contact us and we’ll see what we can configure.

How about bugs?

Not too bad.

Intermediate

On a scale of 1 – 5, five being the most challenging, three hiking boots is smack in the middle.

1 boot = basecamp/dayhike easy 2 boots = easier backpacking trip 3 boots = intermediate level trip 4 boots = intermediate to advanced backpacking 5 boots = ask yourself are you really ready for this?

Expect whatever level you think might best fit you to be one level LOWER on our scale. Hiking here in Alaska is generally a step or three above what you’ll find in the Lower 48 states.

If you consider yourself up for an intermediate level hike, for example, assume that a trip rated intermediate here will probably be a bit tougher than you’re expecting; not impossible, but harder than you think. Intermediate level trips don’t mean you won’t be challenged, won’t struggle at times, and won’t have any easy sections either. On any trip you’ll probably find some easy sections, some harder, and some are challenging.

Also, understand that all these rating are so completely subjective that they’re not entirely all together practical. They’re a VERY loose idea of how the trips might compare to one another, for some people.

Lastly, understand that even a trip we might rate as “intermediate” (3-4 hiking boots) may still have some difficulty at times. Weather changes things. There may be a tough steep climb on the route that takes a few hours.

10-12 days in the Brooks Range. We float the Continental Divide to the Arctic Ocean. Hiking, camping, rafting, wildlife photography and exploring one of America's finest wilderness.

Backpacking trip Malaspina Glacier Cook tent and kitchen on Malaspina Glacier backpacking trek, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, Alaska.

Malaspina Glacier Backpacking Trip

A Backpacking Trip Like Nothing You’ve Ever Done Before. Or Will Again. I Promise.

On a scale of 1 – 5, five being the most challenging, five hiking boots is right up there.

Expect it to be tougher than you think it will. At least in part, anyway. Some sections will inevitably be easier. Some will make you feel it.

One of the best hikers I’ve walked with, Ben, said it perfectly one day, as we traversed a step sidehill on the Southern Traverse. “Man, Alaska just beats you up, doesn’t it?”

And he’s right. It does. Don’t be fooled by the low mileages and the lower elevations. The catch is the difficulty of traversing rugged country with no trails. However much you think that might impact you, double it.

You need to be athletic, well balanced, in good shape, and an experienced backpacker for this kind of trip. If you’re not that .. well, don’t say you weren’t well warned.

A trek like no other. A glacier like no other. We backpack across the largest glacier in North America. Beneath the highest coastal mountains in the world.

sea kayak trips anchorage

The Edge of Nowhere. The End of Everywhere.

On a scale of 1 – 5, five being the most challenging, two hiking boots is at the easier end of the spectrum.

Realize that backpacking is never “easy”. You’re carrying from 35-50+ pounds on your back day after day. You’ll be hiking for a number of hours each day (varies trip to trip, day to day), and that’s not “easy” for most people.

That said, our “2 hiking boots”  level should meet the need for most novice backpackers, and are generally what I recommend for families with younger kids, etc as well. Terrain challenges aren’t usually a problem, and the walking is somewhat more orthodox. You won’t be traversing 1 mile of steep sidehill covered in slippery rocks, or snaking through dense thickets of alder and willow.

Backpacking on the shores of the Pacific Ocean we explore both the ancient spruce forests and edges of Malaspina Glacier. Bears, packrafts and nobody else.
