TourTrek TC Flex Golf Travel Bag

Photo of TourTrek TC Flex Golf Travel Bag

The Bottom Line

The TourTrek TC-Flex is a great budget option thanks to its great all-around performance. The TC-Flex is an easy recommendation in the under $250 price category.

The top padding is very protective and the pockets add just enough space to hold your gear. The handles on the sides and top make it easy to transport in and out of your car. This bag folds up into a very small formfactor, too.

The bag itself isn't very rigid which makes it bow in the middle. The pockets could be larger, too.

Tour Trek GTS Hardcase

The GTS Hardcase from Tour Trek (Golfsmith’s house brand) is one of the few available hardsided golf travel bags. Like the Samsonite Hardside , it has a lightweight ABS shell and comes with four 360-degree spinner wheels on the bottom of the case that enable you to roll it standing up, along with two in-line skate wheels when you need to pull it over rougher terrain.

An interior pocket or two would have been nice, but now we’re really splitting hairs. The GTS Hardcase and Samsonite Hardside are very similar products (thus the similar scoring), and it ultimately may come down to which one is better priced on a given day (we’ve seen both at discounts to the listed MSRPs), and whether or not you get antsy about the fact that we couldn’t find any warranty information about the product. We presume that Golsmith would stand behind its products, but you may not be as trusting as we are.

If you fill up your golf travel bag to the airline baggage weight limit, you’ll be at 50 pounds. It’s much easier to roll 50 pounds that is standing up on four wheels than it is to lift one edge of a 50 pound bag and drag it behind you on two wheels. Your arms, shoulders and back will all thank you if you make the move.

Retail price: $199.99 Golfsmith: Check price now

DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

As mentioned above, the Tour Trek GTS Hardcase golf travel case is made of ABS (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, if you must know what it stands for), a lightweight plastic that has a bit of flexibility. Interestingly, both the Tour Trek GTS Hardcase and the Samsonite Hardside had a number of scuffs and scratches after their maiden voyages – we presume it’s just a propensity of ABS to show wear and tear. There was, however, no damage to the structural integrity of the case, and more importantly, the precious cargo was untouched.

A two-way zipper runs the length of the bag with a ring that enables the zippers to be locked together, and the bag comes with a TSA approved padlock. The dimensions of the GTS Hardcase are approximately 52” x 15” x 14”, compared to the Samsonite Hardside ’s 54″ x 16″ x 12″, and thus the GTS Hardcase has a tad more interior capacity. Note that even though it’s a hair shorter than the Samsonite, it had no problems accommodating a golf carry bag with an oversize driver in it.

The design of the Tour Trek GTS Hardcase also includes:

  • four 360-degree “spinner” wheels on the bottom of the case that pivot in any direction, making for a smooth rolling experience and the ability to pivot quickly and easily,
  • two additional in-line skate wheels positioned on one side that can be used to pull the case over curbs or uneven surfaces,
  • a thin layer of padding throughout the bag, with thicker foam padding at the top to protect the heads of your clubs as they extend out of your regular golf carry bag,
  • two internal adjustable straps to secure your golf bag – one that fits around the top of the bag and one toward the bottom,
  • two plastic-gripped handles – one at the top of the case, and one on the side – with springs that cause the handles to fold tight with the case when they aren’t being used, and
  • only one color option – grey.

We tested the Tour Trek GTS Hardcase with a standard sized carry bag, and were comfortably able to fit a pair of golf shoes, a pair of flip flops, and clothes for a long weekend. On the trip home, we had all of the dirty clothes in a plastic hotel laundry bag, and were easily able to shove the plastic bag into the GTS Hardcase and zip it shut. The ABS exterior has some give to it, so there was actually additional room to cram in additional stuff, but as always, you have to be aware of exceeding airline restrictions on weight.

TRAVEL IMPRESSIONS

Like the Samsonite Hardside , the Tour Trek GTS Hardcase is designed to stand on its base and let you wheel it along on the four “spinner” wheels. If you’re going over a curb or uneven surface, you can easily grab the top handle and drag it behind you on the two in-line skate wheels.

The Tour Trek GTS Hardcase weighed 16 pounds (as tested), making it the second heaviest travel case we tested (topped only by the OGIO Mammoth ), but because it is fully wheeled, the additional weight doesn’t impact the ease of hauling it around. The primary impact of the heavier weight is that it means you’re a bit closer to the airlines’ “overweight” baggage fee for bags over 50 pounds before you’ve even started packing.

While the GTS Hardcase is two inches shorter than the Samsonite Hardside , it’s still difficult to fit in the trunk of a typical import car, so you’ll need to either use a pass through between the trunk and back seat, or you can just lay it across the entire back seat (which worked fine in our rental Toyota Camry).

The Tour Trek GTS Hardcase golf travel bag retails for $199.99, placing it among the least expensive third of bags in our tests. We’ve hammered home the convenience of four-wheeling in this review, but will emphasize it one more time – until you’ve tried it, you don’t know what you’re missing. The hard shell provides great confidence in the protection afforded for your clubs, while staying relatively light.

We couldn’t find any warranty information about the Tour Trek GTS Hardcase either on the packaging or on the retailer’s web site, so it may just be caveat emptor. This is a minor concern, although Golfsmith is a large retailer and presumably would stand behind its house products.

The proper golf travel bag is necessary for anyone hitting the road. A travel bag needs to check all the boxes —durability, pocket space, padding and an internal strap to keep the bag snug and not moving around inside—the difference-maker is the much-appreciated ability to effortlessly move through the airport. Wheels to allow you to move through the airport with minimum effort is also key.

If you're reading this, it's not too late. You've likely done the hard part—booking your next golf trip. Now you need to figure out how to get your golf clubs safely to your destination. We're here to help, here are a few of our favorite travel bags that'll make things a little easier whenever you hit the road again. RELATED: The best travel cover for golfers

Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian

The Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian is large enough to hold anything from a standard carry bag to the largest of cart bags. There are enough pockets to store everything from a pair (or two) of golf shoes, raingear, a dozen balls and, on the way home, probably a bag of dirty laundry. At the airport, the pivoting wheels make maneuvering through check-in a breeze.

Moscow Travel Group Meeting

At last we meet again! This Saturday, 20 July at 10:30 at One World Cafe, 533 South Main Street, Moscow, Idaho. We will be talking about......TRAVEL! Some of us have been on trips and/or have trips coming up and would love to give and get tips. Everyone is welcome as long as you love to talk about travel. So the big question is, "Who will be there?"

S & M will be there. Pam asked me to bring something for showing and telling but I can't remember what it was. Maybe it was a memeory improvement exercise.

The cream doth rise.

I will be there ready to listen to Darcy's report on France, Switzerland and Germany, Monte and Sharon's trip to Canada and....yea!! A report on the Heart of Italy tour! Fortunately Monte, I have no idea what I wanted you to bring. Were you going to wear your cowboy outfit? BTW, the Moscow Farmers Market is on Main St this year, so it is closed from 6th where One World is north to 3rd St. They are also inexplicably working on the parking lot where the market used to be, so parking slots number about 1/3 of what they usually are. Drove by there today and it does not look like there is any way they will have any of them done by Saturday since they are taking them back to dirt and starting over with the pavement. Best parking will probably be in the direction of Gritman Hospital or East on 6th street toward the big parking lot across from the Post Office.

Just the spurs.

Well, hmmm, guess the spurs will somehow work in to some kind of travel theme. (and just cracking up!)

But can spurs be taken through Security? I would definitely want them in my carry on just in case I need them during the flight! Pam, thanks for the info on parking; it's definitely appreciated. Pam, have you heard from Rog and Cinda? Do you know if they're coming? I'd love to hear the pros and cons of Rog's packing list and backpack. See you soon!

Monte - can you bring that security pocket you use? I picked up another wallet that will fit Euros and Pounds better, and wonder now if it will fit in that kind of pocket. Just to be clear, you are wearing more than just the spurs, right?

Right, and a hat.

@ Rog, You will give us a complete report on your packing list, won't you? Any thing you'll leave out--or add--next trip?

Oh nooo! Not the packing list!!! I am happy to report I wore everything I took including the rain jacket I jammed in at the last minute. Walking tour of Florence in the pouring rain, anyone? I scoped out parking yesterday and noted they have roped off the vacant lot at the SW corner of 6th and Jackson (the one way street heading toward Genesee)and are making that public parking while the main lot is torn up. Pam

Thanks, Pam, that's good to know!

Darcy - I can prepare a short powerpoint if you like. Or will handouts be sufficient? And Pam will discuss the merits of quoting weights of items to the gram in helpline posts.

...and the cream doth rise again.

I only used grams because I thought someone might think I misread the scale on the compression bag and it was really 2# instead of 2 oz. I am with Jimmy Carter and the rest of the dinosuars. Darcy, don't even tempt him to do a Powerpoint on his lists!

Roger, a powerpoint would be really nice but a handout would actually be better so that we can all take them home to study! Pam, did you by any chance learn to pack from Roger?

Yes, yes, I did get the impetus from him, BUT the real packing genius that started it all was Monte (ably assisted by Sharon) with his packing seminar at the Genesee library that Rog, Laurie and I attended.

We charge now.

Really, I should not drink coffee at the computer. Just burst out laughing at your comment Monte.

Day after tomorrow!

So, it looks like we'll have Pam, Sharon, Monte, Rog, (Cinda?), Laurie, Hedy, Doug and me. Anyone else? Everyone's welcome as long as the topic is travel-related!

We will bring our two grandkids so they can terrorize the group before Sharon takes them to the farmers market for lumpia.

Cinda has to work the canning demo at the Market. We were trying to talk Roger's sons in to coming so they could tell everyone how they loved Italy! We will love meeting the M&S grand kids! Pam

Yes, we're looking forward to meeting the S&M grandkids! Further news: Leslie is coming--Yay! Anyone else?

Excellent get-together today! We got trip reports from Italy and France/Switzerland/Germany (and didn't you guys go to Austria?? we missed that). We had discussions of trips to UK in January and Armenia next May with passing comments on trips to Spain in Sept 2014, Britain/Scotland/Ireland/?? in May of 2014. Monte brought his spurs and antique Stetson, but declined to wear them as he did not think it would blend in with the Farmer's Market crowd outside. We met grandchildren who are developing in to travelers and want to go to Lithuania. Awesome time!

It was an excellent get-together! We loved hearing all about the RS Heart of Italy tour and how excellent it was. Yes, Pam, some of us also went to Austria....I just didn't get to that part of the trip. I'll save that for the next get-together. Monte's spurs and Stetson are amazing. Don't you just love show & tell? (Helpline, you had to be there to appreciate it!) The grandkids were great--no terrorizing occurred! It was fun to see budding travelers with their dreams and goals.

Look / sound / feel, forgiveness.

The Taylormade Tour Preferred MC Irons are made to bridge the gap between performance and forgiveness.

It’s a great option for experienced ball strikers who are looking for a high-performance set of irons but still want a bit of forgiveness for those occasional bad hits.

Their hallmark feature is Taylormade’s “Speed Pocket” design on the 3 through 7 irons which allows for faster ball speeds and greater distance.

The MC series falls right in the middle of Taylormade’s Tour Preferred line-up where the MB sits on the expert end and the CB is made for more beginner players.

In this TaylorMade MC Irons review, we will discuss not only the best features of MC irons but also who will benefit from these clubs.

TaylorMade MC Irons Review

Performance

The Tour Preferred MC line is meant to provide quality irons for players looking to move into expert level. It brings packs a powerful performance on centered hits but it also adds some forgiveness to the bad ones.

The thinner soles will give players greater control over their shot while the Speed Pocket design adds forgiveness.

This isn’t an expert level iron set like the Tour Preferred MB but it will give players the support they need to upgrade from more beginner-level sets.

Clubhead size remains larger than the MB and smaller than the CB so would probably be ideal for players with low double digit handicaps. It’s not yet what experts may use but it will help players aiming to get there.

Unlike previous releases of this model, and to accommodate the Speed Pocket design, the 3 iron through 7 irons are cast while only the short irons remain forged.

Some players might not appreciate the difference this makes in the feel and response of the irons, though many users have expressed the difference is minimal in daily use.

While the irons give plenty of feedback without the harshness, some players might need some getting used to the sound and the stiffness of impact. It’s not as soft as other models and can have an artificial ring to it.

The “Speed Pocket” is one of the more prominent and highly marketed new technologies on these irons. It’s a tiny slot cut into the sole of the iron that allows for more flex on impact leading to more springiness. ( source)

Players who have used the technology on the green agree the feature will add a few extra yards to their swing and add consistency to longer shots. ( source )

It should also be noticeably easier to hit the ball on center with these irons.

Build Quality & Durability

Overall, chatter marks and scratches tend to remain low through extended use. To prevent debris from entering the speed pocket and to help quiet vibration, TaylorMade filled it in with a specially formulated polyurethane by 3M. ( source )

For some users and on rougher terrain, this may wear over time but it’s unlikely to with regular use.

Look and Feel

In their 2014 release, Taylormade took away the precision weighting port that had the irons looking more industrial.

The latest irons come with a clean and minimalistic design throughout, which some will appreciate as an improvement over the previous version.

It’s as though they decided to mute the aesthetic to give it a more classic air and a better look in the bag.

A hand-polished satin nickel-chrome finish gives the irons a professional sheen that looks pretty good in the bag. It’s also probably good it’s a satin finish so you don’t have to worry about getting blinded on sunny days.

HOW DOES IT COMPARE?

Taylormade tour preferred mb.

If your ball striking ability is high enough that the MC series could be holding you back, you might want to take a look at the all-forged MB line instead.

While it doesn’t feature the “Speed Pocket” technology, its smaller clubface is designed to give more performance and accuracy to your hits.

Taylormade Tour Preferred CB

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

Players looking for a much larger footprint will want to take a look at the CB. The forgiving design is perfect for players looking for greater game improvement.

Titleist AP2 712

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

The AP2 712 is targeted at the same type of player as the MC. You’ll get the same balance between performance and forgiveness and players will appreciate the boost in distance and workability this set has to offer.

The main difference between these and the MCs will be that the entire set comes forged, which may make some difference in the feel and playability.

Mizuno MP 54

Without the Speed Pocket feature, the shots may not feel as powerful, but they offer more workability and are meant to help anyone with a low double digit handicap progress to the next level.

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

That’s all well and good, and during that time, they’ve done a great job marketing to the weekend warrior but at some point, it seemed like they lost touch with the more serious golfer. This year, that tune has changed and the company has brought back their “Tour Preferred” line of irons. The line has three different models; the first is their muscle back or MB model and is for the best of players. On the other end of the spectrum of the Tour Preferred line are the CB’s. These clubs, as you can tell by the name, have a cavity back and have a much larger foot print. In the middle, there are the muscle cavity or MCs.  These clubs combine ideas from the two sets around them to produce a club with a slight cavity, a smaller shape, and thin top lines in a package that also has some of the technology that’s missing from the MBs.

Read on to find out if TaylorMade’s newest irons are as good as they’d have you believe or if they are just another club that will be replaced in a few short months. Specs For the purpose of this review, I received the standard 3-PW set of the TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC irons. The set came with the stock KBS Tour shafts, which have become the go-to for many TaylorMade irons. The set has fairly standard lofting for a modern players irons. The irons also came equipped with the standard TaylorMade branded Tour Velvet grip. Detailed specs are as follows:

Design and Technology While these are player’s clubs, no doubt, they still feature quite a lot of technology, which is something that you rarely see in a club in this category. Perhaps the most touted feature of the new set is the inclusion of the Speed Pocket. While the company’s Speed Pocket technology dates back to last year and made its debut on the RocketBladez, it wasn’t around for the previous version of the Tour Preferreed irons. Like the CB model, the MCs have the Speed Pocket milled into the 3-7 irons. This slot, which is filled with a specially formulated polyurethane by 3M, is said to increase ball speeds across the lower portion of the face where miss hits tend to happen the most. This is a technology not found in the MB irons.

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

However, the inclusion of the Speed Pocket means that the MCs aren’t completely forged clubs, which they had been in the previous version. Instead, only the 8, 9, and PW (the clubs without the Speed Pocket) are forged, while the rest of the set is cast. Some would worry that might effect the feel, however, TaylorMade says that the cavity of the clubs have been precision engineered to produce the perfect blend of feel, workability, and stability. The grooves have also been precision milled onto the face to give optimal spin out of the rough. The company says that they have paid extra attention to detail with these clubs checking every curve, line and angle throughout production to give a great product. In fact, along with the irons, the company has launched the Tour Preferred 360 program. By registering your 2014 Tour Preferred irons with them, they will give you (through 2015) annual loft and lie checks, annual re-gripping, as well as access to additional content on their website and the Tour Preferred Hotline..

Esthetics From a looks point of view, these clubs are among the cleanest that the company has ever produced. When you put as much technology into clubs as TaylorMade does, it isn’t necessarily easy to hide. While not quite as sleek as the muscle backs in the series, they do have a very simple design, especially when compared to the previous versions of the Tour Preferred irons. While those had kind of an industrial look with the screw and weight port featured prominently in the club’s cavity, these have a beautiful satin chrome chrome finish and limited markings. Above the top of the cavity is the TaylorMade word mark, and in the cavity are the words “Tour Preferred” and MC. The short irons also have “Forged” stamped on the hosel. The only bit of visible technology is the Speed Pocket which spans the length of the sole on the mid and long irons. Also, the clubs with the Speed Pocket, also have a notch cut out from the heel, presumably to save weight. Other than the Speed Pocket on the long and mid irons, the only other marking on the soles is the clubs number.

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

At address, the sleekness continues. The clubs have minimal offset (actually less than the MBs in the long irons and just slightly more in the short ones), and thin top lines. While they are a bit larger than their blade counterparts, they still are fairly small clubs, so if you want some meat behind the ball, you may wish to continue on to the CB irons. As stated earlier, the clubs have a satin chrome finish that not only looks great in the bag but also frames the ball beautifully at address. Being as I play my golf in sunny southern California, I like these clubs as the finish helps to reduce glare as it’s kind of hard to hit the ball when you’re being blinded.

Performance I started a thread a couple years back about my clubs being stolen and while it’s never fun to have that happen to you, I was lucky enough to have the clubs covered and wound up with the previous version of the Tour Preferred MC clubs. I played those for a little over a year, and ended up selling them off after getting some new sticks. That maybe one of the only times I’ve regretted selling clubs. Those clubs had great feel and performed well for me, and while the looks of them weren’t loved by all, I liked them. Because of this, I when the opportunity to review these clubs came about I jumped all over it and had high expectations for them. I must say, that I am not one bit disappointed with these clubs.

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

To start, as I mentioned, I received these with the stock steel shafts, which in this case were KBS Tour. I have found this to be my favorite shaft as it has a softer feeling compared to either the True Temper Dynamic Gold or Project X shafts that I’ve played previously while launching the ball high. At 120 grams, the shafts are among the heavier ones out there, but, the balance of the club feels right to me and I feel that I can control the shot with them.

One of the more touted features of the club is the Speed Pocket, which TaylorMade says adds distance by increasing ball speed and consistency across the face of the club. In fact, when they debuted the Speed Pocket in last years RocketBladez they challenged consumers to try their 7 iron versus their own, guaranteeing that their’s would be longer. So, is this true, does the Speed Pocket really give more distance? Quite simply, yes. For me, I’ve seen an increase of about 1/2 club in the irons; which while not a huge amount is still nice. With the addition of the Speed Pocket comes a couple of questions and one of those is about the durability of the pocket itself. The pocket is milled into the sole of each of the clubs and then, to prevent dirt and debris from getting in, is filled with a specially formulated polyurethane by 3M. While I’ve only had the clubs a few months I’ve played an average of 3 rounds a week plus practice sessions with them, and they have held up just fine. As far as I’m concerned, durability here shouldn’t be an issue.

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

Probably the bigger plus of the Speed Pocket is the increased consistency of the club rather than the added distance. Especially as the clubs get longer, the swing tends to get a little bit more inconsistent leading some shots a little towards the heel or toe or maybe a little thin or fat. The simple truth is that long irons are harder to hit than the short ones. While the Speed Pocket doesn’t completely change this, I’ve noticed a lot more consistency in my distances. No longer is a 4 or 5 iron 10 yards short of where I thought it should be and just as important, shots that I feel like I absolutely got a hold of aren’t flying the green. Sure those shots go a few yards further, but it’s a few yards, not 10.

Another big question that comes up due to the addition of the Speed Pocket is feel. With the Tour Preferred MC irons, only the short irons (8-PW) are forged, and those clubs are also missing the speed pocket. I was curious if, and a bit concerned that, the long and mid irons would feel substantially different from the short irons due to the Speed Pocket and different processes by which they would made. The short irons, as expected, felt just as good as any other forged iron I’ve ever hit. Center hits feel almost like nothing. In the long and mid irons, I don’t really think that the feel is really any different. Good strikes still feel very solid, and not so good strikes feel just a little bit worse. I had a friend hit both the 7 and 8 irons without seeing the clubs sole, and he couldn’t tell a difference in feel. If this is a concern for you, I don’t think it should be.

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

Playing in some rather windy conditions as of late has led to situations where it was necessary to hit a few variety of shots. Whether I needed to flight the ball low to stay out of the wind or high to take advantage of it, I don’t feel that these clubs limited me at all. That’s not to say that I pulled the shot off every time, but I’m an 11 handicap. Though these clubs come with the KBS Tour shafts, which tend to hit the ball a bit higher in my experience than Dynamic Golds, I haven’t seen any issues with hitting the ball too high. However, I never would describe myself as a high ball hitter anyways, so if you are, maybe a different shaft choice would be in order. As always, it’s probably best to get fitted and see what works well for you.

Conclusion So, what’s the bottom line on these clubs? I feel that in the TaylorMade Tour Preferred MCs, the company has created a set of irons both for everybody and nobody at the same time. What I mean by that is even as a low double digit handicap, I don’t find these clubs all that hard to hit, which is good news, but much worse than my level, and I might suggest the Tour Preferred CB irons instead. On the other hand, players with better ball striking abilities than myself might prefer the all forged MBs. On the other hand, these clubs kind of give the best of both worlds; you still an iron with a smallish profile and thin top lines as you would in the MBs as well as forged short irons, but you don’t give up the benefits of having the Speed Pocket in the long and mid irons.

However you want to look at it, I truly believe that TaylorMade has created a set that will last for years in the bags of many. I said earlier that I had high expectations for these clubs based upon my experience with the previous Tour Preferred MC irons, and these clubs have more than lived up to those expectations. The looks of the irons have been toned down since the last version and where they were once a bit industrial looking are now the sleekest that TaylorMade has produced in a long time. Couple that with the fact that these irons perform great and you have a recipe for a set worthy of the Tour Preferred name. While I’m sure that I’ll be trying different irons out in the future, it’s going to take something really special to get these out of my bag for good.

Got a used set on eBay with DG X100 and what a gulf between these irons and the RBladz. I really do not know what I have been doing with R-Flex shafts all this time!!! Handicap tumbling down from day 1. Smile…

Taylormade Tour Preferred Irons Review - MC

Technology and looks included in these irons.

This is my full Taylormade Tour Preferred Irons Review after getting fitted at a Taylormade Performance Lab.

I have already used my new irons for 5 rounds!

This is my experience and the performance I got out of it!

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

These irons arrived just in time for my first month of golf here in MN.  I’ve played them more than 5 rounds now and I am even happier with them now than when I walked out of the fitting.  I knew they were a good fit, but I didn’t know how it would impact my game.  I didn’t really pick up additional yardage and it wasn’t like I was spraying my previous irons all over the planet, so what were the TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC irons going to bring to my game?  Consistency.  Specially I hit more greens in regulation.   I’ve been tracking data a little closer as of recent to try and figure out where I am losing strokes to par.  I realized that par 3 holes have been my weakness.  Sure I wasn’t getting doubles or triples on them, but 3 out of 4 I would bogey during a typical round.  I found it was because I wasn’t hitting my irons onto the green.  I was always scrambling trying to make par.  I didn’t find it as noticeable on par 4s and 5s, but the 3s were killing my total score.  It is mainly because par 3s tend to be long irons shots for me.  Most are between 200 yards and 150 yards.  With the TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC irons I am getting 3 out of 4 pars and have even snuck in a few birdies.

The additional pars really happened because of the Speed Pockets in the  7-iron and up.  While many want to talk about the additional distance, I found the additional forgiveness is what really sold me on the technology.  I found that I could hit it just about anywhere on the face and there was almost no loss of distance or direction.  I hit so many greens with these long irons even when I came out of the swing feeling like it wasn’t going to happen.  I could still look down at a players shaped club, but get game improvement club results.  The landing circles for the long irons are the tightest I’ve ever hit.

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

In the scoring irons 8-PW they offer forged goodness.  Even though they don’t have the Speed Pockets, they are still a moderately forgiving cavity back irons.  They look and feel like players irons when you are hitting those shorter yardages and trying to get close to the pin.  I found  a great consistency with these irons too, but to be fair most short irons tend to be easier to hit for golfers.  What I really appreciated was the turf interaction with these clubs.  They have a good blunted leading edge which resists digging, but yet thin enough to cut in and cut out of the grass, short or tall.  There was just enough camber to react nicely with tight lies too. What is really good is how smoothly they transition from top to bottom.  The feel is consistent from the long irons to the short irons.  Even though the long irons are not forged the Speed Pocket makes up for that, and feel very similar to the forged shorter irons.  I can’t say I could feel a difference between the 7 iron and the 8-iron.  The pocket space and polymer fill creates a softer feel, just like a forged iron.

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

The fitting also showed me that importance of the iron shaft too.  While I was able to hit just about every shaft we tried decently, the DG S400 Tour Issue shafts made everything tighter and better.  It lowered the spin, and made the landing zone smaller.  They are basically a little heavier shaft with tighter tolerances.   Those specs turned into results on the course.

Another nice addition was the Tour Preferred 50* wedge.  I found I had a gap between my pitching wedge and 54* wedge.  Now it depends on the set of wedges I play, but I’ve really gravitated toward this set-up lately meaning I need a gap wedge of some sort.  Some irons sets include them, the Tour Preferred MC’s don’t.  But the new TaylorMade Tour Preferred wedges will work well with all their sets.  It made a perfect transition between my irons and wedges.  I had excellent distance control with this wedge.  It was my go to 100 yard club.  It was set up to match the rest of my set during my fitting.

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

The final touch of the TaylorMade Tour Preferred line showed up in the mail after I’d played about 3 rounds with these clubs; a Tour Preferred Membership pack.  2 sleeves of Tour Preferred balls, a ball marker and a membership card for my irons in case they needed adjustments or spec checks along the way.  It was a really nice touch for registering my clubs into their database.

If new irons are on your list for 2014 or if you could use some improvements to your iron game without hitting game-improvement irons, the TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC irons are the perfect mix of technology and looks.  There is finally an iron for better players that helps them hit lower scores without looking the part.  I suggest going to a TMPL (TaylorMade Performance Lab) near you and hitting all the new TaylorMade irons.  The fitting will really give you confidence and will set you up with the best set of irons for your game.  The Tour Preferred MC irons were the best fit for me because they have the technology my game needs, but the looks I want.

Iron comparison: TaylorMade MC v. RocketBladez

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

From the forums,  By Caesar Palache

My shop was lucky enough to get the RocketBladez delivered quite early and they came in today around 2 p.m. First thing I did was cut the box open and take them down to the range for a quick demo.

A little background on myself: I’m a 2.8 handicap but that doesn’t mean I don’t shoot 80 every few weeks, and I’m 5’6″ with spikes on. I do not hit the ball far nor do I try to, but I hit it straight. That being said my 7 iron is a 165-yard max club, meaning I pull the 7 iron out on 155-165 yard shots.  I play Taylormade MC 4-PW irons with KBS C-Taper stiff shafts.

Today in Virginia it was a cool 50 degrees tops, and the wind was a slight breeze straight into my face. I expected to be hitting my 7 iron around 155 since it was cool, into the wind and I hadn’t swung the club in a week. I took out the range finder and found a spot on the range that was exactly 165 from one of the flags. Each MC 7 iron I hit was coming up around 5-10 yards short of the flag I was aiming for (155-160 yards). Then I pulled out the RocketBladez…

The first shot went up and kept going up, and continued to go up until it came down a good 5 paces beyond the 165 yard flag. The ball goes high. As I mentioned before I was hitting into the breeze so you assume the ball would balloon up into to, except this ball didn’t balloon.  It cut right through the wind as if nothing was there and then came down soft at about 170 yards. My thoughts were maybe I nutted it. I took another swing and what do you know, the ball went up and up and flew to the 165-yard flag with ease as if it were a calm, sunny 77-degree day. I hit about 10 balls with the RocketBladez 7 iron and nine of the 10 carried the 165-yard flag. Did I mention the ball went high?

Now, the stock shaft is lighter then what I am accustomed to and because of this I missed a few left of the flag and hung a few right when I was trying not to “snap” it left.  If I drew a line from the far left ball to the far right ball, 9 of the 10 balls would have been within 3 paces of the line.  I hit some thin, hit some flush, pulled some, pushed some, even nearly hozeled one (the heel shot went dead straight about 160 yards, still carrying past my MC 7 iron on this chilly day). Needless to say I was quite impressed.  I flew the RocketBladez iron on average 10-15 yards further then my MC 7 iron. It was a hard day to get a clear picture on how far these irons would go since it was cold and windy, but I have no doubt these added at least a club to a club and a half more distance.

Now for more of a detailed review. Click here for more discussion in the forums.

First things first, I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the package up and pulled the 7 iron out. My first thoughts, this DOES NOT look like the Rocket Ballz irons from last year — these look darn good.  Pictures do not do these clubs justice because they look great.  This comes from a guy who plays the TM MC, a players club, but I could easily game the RocketBladez iron. I thought for sure I would have to go with the Tour version since it was more the players club, but these fit the eye more then you’d expect. The thin sole was a very nice surprise — think Taylormade CB meets Burner 2.0.  The RocketBladez have a thicker top line then a players club, but not as much offset as you would expect.  The 4 and 5 iron are obviously the most “Game Improvement” looking of the irons. Their heads seem much bigger then my MC heads, but the 6-8 irons seem only a touch larger and the 9, PW and AW looked like a players club.

Feel/Sound:

TaylorMade said these clubs would feel as good as a non-forged club could feel, and yes these clubs did feel fairly good.  This comes from a guy who thinks the MC irons are as good as it gets (without flushing a blade of course).  There is nothing quite like flushing a blade, or in my case flushing my MC iron. In my mind, it literally sounds like a muted flush and feels effortless when you strike it a MC iron solid. Well, no one is going to mistake you for hitting a blade or MC when you hit the Rocketbladez. It sounds like your hitting a cavity back iron. Now, I’m not sure if that is because I picked the ball, or hit the ball thin. But at certain times I really heard a POP when hitting these. Don’t get me wrong: it’s great feedback to hear POP as you strike the ball and see it go up and up (Did I mention how high these go?). But coming from a player’s club background, I like my muted flush a little bit better.

As for the feel of the POP, it was actually quite nice, knowing “yup I caught that one well” as you see the ball climb higher and higher and pierce the wind like it’s nothing. Think of what it feels like to flush a hybrid. Add a little bit of iron feel and you’ve got it.  As for the thin shots where they say the Speed Pocket is influenced even more, you can tell you hit it thin. It feels a bit harsher and doesn’t have the cavity POP I was talking about.  A thin shot with a Rocketbladez though, is much, much better then a thin with my MC irons. Overall you know you are hitting a “game improvement” club, but it feels quite nice.

Dispersion/Consistency:

As I said, this shaft was lighter and probably a bit weaker then I would like.  So I blame the left and right balls on the shaft, obviously, but I was overwhelmed with how easy it was to consistently hit the ball the same exact distance each time.  My near hozel shot traveled straight and 160 yards, I think we would all take a straight heel shot.  I “purposely” tried to hit some thin, and except for a touch harsher feel, the ball got up as high as my MC iron and went a touch shorter then a center face strike of the RocketBladez.  I cannot wait to try these with a shaft that I am more comfortable with.

Workability/forgiveness :

Now onto my favorite, can you work the ball? Obviously since I play the MC irons, I like to work the ball, preferably right to left.  But who doesn’t love a little forgiveness?

After getting comfortable with the RocketBladez I tried shaping some a little bit more then normal.  I started a 5 iron about 25 feet right of where I wanted it to land and released it hard from inside to see what it would do. Well, the ball went up and up and turned and turned right (well it actually turned left) into my target. Remember when I said these balls go high? Now, some of that movement can be attributed to the lighter shaft, but overall I was very surprised at how easy it was to move the ball around. It obviously wasn’t as easy as my MC iron but it wouldn’t be difficult to turn the ball into a tight pin if I needed too.

As for forgiveness, well, I didn’t slice one ball so it’s a high handicapper’s delight!  In all seriousness the ball went straight when I missed it, my near hozel went straight, my thin shots went straight, my toe shots went fairly straight.  They say the Speed Pocket helps with forgiveness and I believe it. The sweet spot is huge, it’s very very easy to hit it straight. (Take that with a grain of salt as I normally hit the ball straight and these where much easier to hit then my MC’s). As for hitting the ball, these were effortless to get up into the air. And they go high. For anyone who struggles launching the ball high, these are the club for you.

Overall I was very impressed with the Rocketbladez irons, considering I all but wrote them off and was expecting to only demo the Tour version.  I think it will be quite a bit harder to just go with the Tour version because they are the “players club.”  These Rocketbladez irons are a great club for a “player” if they can get over a few things first.

  • Address: The top line is thicker then you would want in your players irons in the 4-7 iron, and the offset is reasonable through the iron set, with the exception being the 4 and 5 iron might be bit to much for someone who likes a blade. I was fine with the offset and would easily game the 4 and 5 irons, even if I went with the Tour 6-PW.
  • Sound: for those who love the flush, these bladez don’t have it. Don’t get me wrong you can flush them, but they are a louder flush. They have the POP! but you can live without the muted flush sound. Trust me, you can get used to the POP! I found myself trying to get the loudest POP! I could after awhile.
  • Now as for the lofts, get over it! I do not know what the lofts are off the top of my head and never thought of the lofts until just now.  These clubs, even with their jacked lofts, will fly higher, land softer, and be more consistent then what you are playing now. So I could care less about the lofts. They flat out perform and I cannot imagine how high these would fly if they had traditional lofts.

My last word. Superintendants everywhere will be outraged with the destruction of their green complexes if these clubs are as popular as I believe they will be.  They fly high!  If you play on a course with soft greens, you better always keep a ball mark repair tool in your pocket or else.  If I could play Rocketbladez with KBS tour or C-Taper, I think I’d have a winner.  Actually give me a Rocketbladez with the stock shaft and I’ve got a winner.  Taylormade you got me, I will game these “Game Improvement” irons over my MC’s any day.

(Disclaimer: I am a Taylormade loyalist, so you may believe I only like these because I drink the Taylormade cool aide. Try them for yourself, you will be surprised. I did this test in about 20 minutes outside because I was freezing, this was a quick review but I hope it helped sorry for the pictures, I snapped them quick)

I wonder how the rocketbladez tour will compare to the MC irons I’m using now.

Just played my first round with new RocketBladez. The 4-7 irons go 10 or more yards further. A lot of height on 6-7 irons. Still getting used to them. The pop sound is loud and hard to tell if I hit it flush. I have more control and can work them both sides. I miss the feel of my AP1s, but love the results of the RBLDZ. I’ll keep at it.

Played my Hogan Apex PC’s since 1985. Went with the Bridgestone J38’s last summer (same lie/loft as my Hogan’s) great club…. of course I tried my friends Rocketblades as soon as he received them….to me they were very similar to the burner 2.0’s the clubs were longer and lofts stronger so they went about a club further than my current Bridgestone’s. I just prefer the forged clubs…

I am a weekend hack, handicap 5.1, sixty two years ancient, and I still play the Hogan Apex blades I got for Christmas in 1992. I think it’s time for a technology upgrade, and the RocketBladez Tour caught my attention. Is it a good choice for me, or should I go for the standard? My death-shot is a hook, and I hate offset, but maybe I should just get over it and go for the standard?

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

Nov 26, 2012 at 9:38 am

Lot of haters here. Gentlemen, the trajectory is what gets the attention. If it goes higher than the MC, what does the actual loft number have to do with it. New tech has brought on higher trajectory with less loft. The important thing is club length. If you can attack with one club shorter, you are going to be more consistantly sticking it close. As for hitting into the wind, shut it down and play it like you would any other club. No one club plays both ways. But this club cut through the wind like no other. Hit it lower and the head wind doesnt have a chance. Why compare to a blade? Because blades are hard to hit. You have to be a scratch player that hits it on the nuts everytime. A very small percent of players are in that category and playing a blade at 1 or higher handicap is not the best choice anymore.

For starters I agree with the others in two regards; 1. You cannot compare Game Improvement irons to Players irons (and, why would you?) and 2. The author must be aware of all specs on the clubs involved in the test/comparison.

Furthermore, when reviewing clubs it is absolutely crucial for the tester to not be a “fan-boy” of one particular brand and, regardless of brands, should definitely know how long, what flex, kickpoint, loft/lie, offset and any other variable relevent to the test. Otherwise, what are you testing or comparing? Looks? This review was just one person agreeing with himself.

Great comment Hula_Rock and xHellsing. You can’t compare a game improvement to a players iron. Of course you’re going to hit the ball farther with the GI. TM jacks there lofts up way too much. It’s ridiculous…terrible review.

In some of the side-by-sides it’s hard to tell which shovel is which. Are the 5 and 7 irons that would be hard to aim (i.e. avoid a pull hook) the MC or the RB? It looks like they’re the MC which is opposite the RB versus ATV comparison.

Nov 20, 2012 at 7:22 pm

Edit: I type shovel as a reflex. They’re growing on me (like a wart?) and certainly don’t look any more shovelly than the latest Cleveland and Nike game improvers.

Titleist launches new Vokey WedgeWorks 60 “A” grind wedge

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

The menu of grind options just got more expansive for Titleist Vokey WedgeWorks consumers, with the addition of a “60A” wedge to the lineup.

Previously, Vokey offered seven main grind options for players with various needs :

  • T Grind: The narrowest sole option, which is widely used by PGA Tour players, and has low bounce
  • L Grind: The lowest bounce option, with heel, toe and trailing edge relief for maximum versatility
  • F Grind: An all-purpose grind that’s best for full wedge shots played with a square face
  • S Grind: A neutral grind, best for full shots played with a square face
  • M Grind: A versatile grind that’s for players who want to open and close the face for various shots
  • D Grind: A higher-bounce wedge that’s for players with a steep swing angle, but want to play shots from various club orientations
  • K Grind: The highest-bounce wedge option, with heel, toe and trailing edge relief for versatility

Titleist has now added the “A” grind, which has actually already been played on the PGA Tour by golfers such as Tom Kim, who used an A-grind to win three times on the PGA Tour, Wyndham Clark, who won the U.S. Open using an A-grind, and Max Homa, who used an A-grind at the 2023 Open Championship.

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

According to Titleist, the Vokey WedgeWorks 60A wedge is a low-bounce option that’s for golfers with a shallow angle of attack, and who play in firmer conditions. It has a “smoothed-out” sole for a faster feel through the turf, helping some golfers slide under the ball easier at impact.

“The most important club for me, probably in my bag, is this A grind,” Clark said, according to a Titleist press release. “I use the SM9 60-degree A grind, which is a low bounce 60 that is very versatile. I’m able to – on tight lies, rough, wet lies, firm lies, whatever it is – hit the shot I want, and with the amount of spin I want, trajectory and everything.”

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

Apparently, Geoff Ogilvy played a large part in the A-grind coming to life.

“I spoke with Geoff (Ogilvy), and we got on the topic of Australian golf courses and how they compared to courses in America, and around the world,” said Vokey Tour Rep Aaron Dill, in a press release. “I asked him some specific questions, which resulted in an idea to design another lob wedge grind option that complemented the firm links-style conditions that players face – not just in Australia and Europe – but globally. Geoff has always been a low bounce player in his 60-degree, so I took his 60.04L wedge and removed the ribbon, resulting in a grind that moves through the turf quickly with very little resistance.”

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

The new Vokey A-grind will be available on Nov. 7, selling for $225 each. Custom options include up to six toe engravings, 10-15 character stamping options, the Flight Line alignment feature option, and custom shafts/grips/ferrules are available.

GolfWRXers put the Full Swing KIT’s accuracy to the test

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

Last month, four GolfWRX forum members traveled to The Grand Golf Club at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar in San Diego, California, to test the Full Swing KIT launch monitor and to see how it stacks up against other launch monitors. If you’re not familiar with the Full Swing KIT , development began when Tiger Woods requested a launch monitor he could trust on the range as much as he trusted his Full Swing simulator in his own home. Later, the KIT earned Tiger’s seal of approval and has been seen with him at every tournament he’s played in since its release.

GolfWRX members on the KIT’s accuracy

zap311: “The Full Swing team seems obsessed with accuracy when it comes to the KIT – The team talked about how this product officially shipped about 18 months ago and they are already on firmware release #20. They said they are regularly releasing updates (overnight via WiFi) to continuously improve accuracy and performance. That is pretty awesome and it’s nice to hear that they are not a company that “ships it” and moves to the next thing. I think they are on the right track since I saw virtually no differences in the data when testing vs. GCQuad and Trackman today.”

double or triple?: “In some cases the difference was less than half a degree on launch and less than 50 rpms on spin.”

hatrick11: “The differences were statistically nonexistent. I think it’s hard to believe for a lot of people when you think about the huge price disparity, but I can’t state enough how close the Full Swing was to trackman every single time, for each of us.”

“Outside, the data is just really really accurate. I know my numbers and know this particular range very well and the KIT was spot on all day. I also had some very variable quality golf balls in the bucket I hit and there was really only one spin rate in the whole session that had me raising my eyebrows at all.”

SwingBlues: “The GolfWRX Full Swing/WRX Experience showed Full Swing KIT produce numbers the same as the GC Quad (GC4) and the Trackman4. Dollar wise, both LMs are easily north of KIT, so this is HUGE to stand up there with the bigger boys on the Podium. For me, it seems more “apples to apples” to compare KIT to GC3. My own testing validates what we saw at the Experience. It shows critical data points like spin, carry, ball speeds are dead on or almost dead on for 40 yards and up on both GC3 and KIT.”

More on the Full Swing KIT

zap311: “The versatility of viewing data is impressive – Depending on usage, everyone has different preferences for viewing data. You have on-device, phone, tablet, monitor, smartwatch, or audio/headphones. I’m pleased to say that Full Swing covers all of these. You can use the app on iOS devices (they said Android is planned for the future). This includes viewing your last shot on the Apple Watch with a few options and turning on audio playback of your preferred metrics following each shot. I’ll post screenshots of this later. You can also choose between 4 data points or 1 data point on the device itself. It was easy to use the app to customize the top 4. For example, I was able to quickly change from launch angle on irons to swing path on driver.

“The KIT was very easy to use – Once you spend a few minutes learning the app and settings, it is very simple to select a club, line up the target line, and fire away. You don’t have to use a level or a laser to line up. KIT uses the built-in camera to tell you where to line up within the app or on-device screen. I was also able to boot up the KIT in less than a minute and drop it down on the tee box for our on-course trial today. Because of this simplicity, I can see it being more practical to bring to the course…

“The Full Swing team really thought through usability for the KIT. You can see up to four data points on the device’s OLED screen. You can see all 16 data points on your iPhone/iPad along with a video replay of the shot, you can view one primary metric from your Apple Watch, and you can enable audio playback for any of the 16 data points. For me, this was a dream as a full iOS user. One other feature I like is that you can star a particular shot to save it. You can also send shot data + the video recording to your coach if you want.”

double or triple?: “I was able to meet the teaching pro at the range I’m using for testing – PGA teacher/member Ryan Kolk. He and his team have 4 units amongst themselves and use them both personally and with their students during lessons. Ryan spent time dialing in his knowledge of the range balls vs proV1x (gamer) to better understand the FSK and he believes the consistency is there with the FSK and within trackman and GC/Foresight models. His preference is to use FSK while testing shafts and new product before using them in his personal playing bag which as a GolfWRX member is 100% appreciated. For his better students, he believes the information like Face to Path and Club Path that FullSwing Kit offers is great to help them understand what their swing is doing and use that information to better themselves.”

hatrick11: “It’s nice to know I can get super useful practice sessions in at my house, and can do in in ~20 min stints; with two little kids at home I can’t just go out for frequent or lengthy range sessions, so this is super valuable and I think will help me keep my game from degrading and allow me to spend my limited free time enjoying the occasional round with friends. In particular with the KIT, as opposed to the cheaper monitors or the other “mid tiers” like GC3, seeing path and face-to-path data is the key item that makes my practice sessions useful…when I am grooving it my path is almost always between 0-2* out to in, with face control being the main thing I need to work on. When my game goes sideways I start coming more in to out, and combined with face consistency being an ongoing issue, that brings the bad left miss into play. Previously I have struggled getting real use out of net practice, because the feels don’t always match reality. This data and video evidence really helps keep me honest, so it was great to see that I was eventually able to get that piece dialed in with KIT.”

SwingBlues: “One feature I am really starting to like is how easy to see the video of each shot. My buddy was not hitting it well, we went to the video and we could see the takeway was too far to the outside.”

“Using the app, it will display all 16 data points. Below is an example of one of my iron shots. Pretty impressive data captured by KIT. On KIT itself, the launch monitor display can be configured to show a single data point, or it can show a grid of 4 data points where the golfer choose which ones to display!”

Club junkie review: cobra’s new king tour irons.

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

The Cobra King Tour irons have been proven on the PGA Tour already and will be in bags of better amateur players this year. The previous King Tour MIM irons were very underrated and offered great precision with a solid shape that many players liked. Cobra went away from the Metal Injection Molded construction and went with a five-step forging process for soft and solid feel.

Make sure to check out the full podcast review at the links below and search GolfWRX Radio on every podcast platform.

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

I was a big fan of the previous Tour MIM irons and played them in rotation throughout the last two years. Out of the box, I was impressed with the more simple and clean look of the badging on the new King Tour. Badging is mostly silver with just small black accents that should appeal to even the pickiest golfers. I didn’t notice the shorter blade length in the new irons but did notice that the leading edge is just slightly more rounded. Topline is thin, but not razor thin, but still has enough there to give you the confidence that you don’t have to hit it on the dead center every shot.

Feel is solid and soft with just a slight click to the thud on well struck shots while mishits are met with a little more sound and vibration to the hands.

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

These King Tour irons are built to be cannons and place more emphasis on consistent and precise shots. I also felt like the new irons launch easily and maybe a touch higher than some irons in the same category.

My launch monitor showed my 7 iron with an average launch angle of 22 degrees and spin right around 5,800 with a Project X LZ 6.0 stock shaft. Ball speed isn’t the ultimate focus of this iron but it did well with an average around 108mph and the iron was able to keep the speed up well when you didn’t strike the center. You will still see a drop off in speed and distance when you miss the center, but you don’t have to be Navy SEAL sniper accurate on the face to achieve a good shot. Dispersion was very tight, and while there are bigger irons with more forgiveness, this players cavity still allows good playability when you aren’t bringing your A-plus game to the course.

Cobra lists the King Tour as an iron for a Tour level player up to a 7 handicap and I think this iron could see the bags of more golfers than that. I am a 9.4 handicap, and I felt more than comfortable playing this iron even on less than perfect days.

Tour Preferred MC

Andy Roberts's picture

Need To Know

TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC combines a player’s shape with a shallow “muscle cavity” to boost MOI, creating an unparalleled blend of beauty, feel, workability and stability.

The 3- through 7-iron incorporate TaylorMade’s renowned Speed Pocket technology to promote increased ball speed in the lower portion of the clubface for more consistent ball speed and launch conditions across the entire face.

The clubhead’s length, top line and sole-width are all slightly larger compared to the Tour Preferred MB.

Feel: Very rewarding sensation off the face with a nice, soft blow. It's a fast face too, so it's ideal. Hot and soft - the perfect combination. The standard KBS Tour, as we keep saying, is one of our favourite shafts on the market. It's just so easy to control through impact, particularly against something like a True Temper S300. Tour Velvet grip is also very comfortable for a standard offering.

Performance: Very forgiving, very powerful and very workable. Probably the easiest iron in this test to work both ways. Balls were flying on an ideal mid-high trajectory, too. Distance is so hot however that it could cause a few problems as the Speed Pocket works its magic. This iron will take a bit of practice to get used to the distance gains but you could be onto a winner after several weeks. Distance control is superb, though. It wasn't as if one ball was finishing shorter than the other, they were all flying long.

A thin topline and shorter head from heel to toe help to create a classic look . The shallow cavity helps distribute weight to the perimeter of the head to increase the moment of inertia (MOI) for extra forgiveness. The sole has softer edges to discourage digging.

Hula Rock

PHASE 1: Unboxing/Initial Impressions

So here it goes.  This one caught me little off guard, there lay in my office, a shape recognizable to all of us that play the game.  “THE BOX” stood there leaning against my desk yelling,“open me”.  To be honest, I totally forgot about what was being sent until a voice uttered, “You ordered something from Taylormade?”   Without knowing it, the next words out of my mouth “taking a half day off”, I threw the box in the trunk, Casa Hula Rock away I went.

pic1.jpg

A little about the specs before I move on.  Given “Carte Blanche” when I was asked to participate in this review, a million shaft/grip configurations started running through my head.  Yes I could have went with KBS Tour-V's, C-tapers, DG Pro's etc.  BUT I actually forced myself to take a little step back and go with what I know and play with.  This is going to be an unbiased review, how unfair would it be if I chose the exotic shaft/grip combination, hit them HORRIBLY, and slammed the product in the review?  We all owe it to MGS and its' members to give an honest review, so here it is:

Irons:  TaylorMade Golf   Tour Preferred MC

Lie Angle:  2 upright

Length:  Stock

Shaft:  KBS tour 90 S

Grip:  Stock

pic3.jpg

Tour Preferred, I really was expecting a hard to hit, smaller compact head.  Surprisingly, with the exception of the 3-4 irons, the set can be confidentially hit by a golfer with an average golf swing.  A couple quick things I did notice about the set, especially with the scoring irons (PW, 9-iron,8-iron).  The hosel has “FORGED” marked down the length.  There isn't a lot of information about this pre-retail set that I could find on the web, so is it safe to assume that the rest of the set is “CAST”?  The scoring irons also lacked the pocket cavity and speed slot which you can see from the pics.

pic4.jpg

Since the weather is still holding up in South Texas, I headed to the club to play a quick 9.  I ended up shooting a 38 and IMMEDIATELY noticed a couple of things.  I will dangle this carrot in front of everyone until my review post:

  • There is a HUGE yardage Gap in the set
  • Feel, this could be the deciding factor for a lot of purchases…..

Oh Ya!  Kudos to My Golf Spy and TMaG for letting me partake in this product review…..  Stay Tuned

:taylormade-small:

Range Finder:  Busnnell Tour- X,  Garmin S20

Introduction

Fire and Ice = Hula Rock and Taylormade golf.  To be honest I NEVER EVER liked anything Taylormade put out, well, I take that back, I was a huge fan of the Y-Cutter wedges years ago.  When I got the call to the “Big Show”, to review the new Tour Preferred irons I could not resist.  I almost turned this opportunity down due to a pending move back to Hawaii, and most important, the birth of my baby girl Brynn.  I am not going to lie; I asked the wife if I could do this.  She knows the game runs in my veins so I was pleasantly surprised when she said:  “go for it, I know how much you love to play the game”.

As most of you have already read, I received these irons way before the retail release.  I wanted to give this set a fair shot so again, when I was asked what I wanted, I picked the iron set, shafts, and grip combo that could give my current gamers a run for their money.  It would have been silly and unfair to the MGS community if I would have picked the TP MB Irons, had KBS Tour-V's installed and hit them like crap and gave them an unsatisfactory review in the process.

I wanted to try and do something different during this review, I thought it would be uber-cool and do a live comparison between my Nike Vr Pro-Combos and the Taylormade MC.  So there I was at my club, in the back of the cart, strapped two full sets of golf clubs.   When given the opportunity I would hit the MC's then follow up with a second shot with my gamers.  It was really interesting to see how different some of the irons performed against each other.

Specs from TaylorMade web site:

Specs.jpg

Short Iron Performance

  • Accuracy – “Par” Nothing game changing here.  The short irons are just as accurate as my current gamers.  A well struck shot will provide expected results.  I was really surprised at the yield of off center strikes, ball flight remains the same with minimal yardage loss, 5-7 yard loss.
  • Distance – “Par” Again, no performance gains.  Yard for yard going against my current gamers.  As noted in accuracy, the scoring irons are a little more forgiving than I expected on off center hits.
  • Trajectory – “Par” I ordered the set with KBS Tour-90's so I was expecting a high ball flight throughout the set.  The golf ball seemed to hold its' flight well in crosswinds during the three rounds that I gamed them but I think it had to do more with the new ball that I was using.
  • Forgiveness – “Birdie” The scoring irons are surprisingly forgiving.  With forged irons you can feel off center hits and immediately say “that's short”.  With these you are going to be surprised with less than stellar ball contact.
  • Control – “Birdie” I put the short irons through the swing gamut: Full swings, half swings, knockdowns, right to left, left to right, etc.   Call up the shot, put a good swing on it, control was effortless.

Short Iron Score – 93/100

Short Irons.jpg

Mid Iron Performance (8,7,6)

  • Accuracy – “Bogey” Here is where I started having problems.  I mentioned that there was a distance gap in the first phase of my review.  Many of you guessed it right, it is where the set transitions from forged to cast, and when the speed pocket is introduced into the 7 iron.  I have not figured out the distance gap yet so accuracy suffers on this bullet.
  • Distance – “Bogey” That damn “gap” thing again…. The forged 8 iron just preforms, you'll get no complaints out of me.  The transition from forged to cast, the hollow muscle cavity and speed pocket changes everything.   For example, I will compare the distances of my current gamers:  8-iron (150-155 yards) 7-iron (160-165 yards)   VS TP MC 8-iron (150-155 yards) 7-iron (170-175) see the gap?
  • Trajectory - “Birdie” I love, love, love the trajectory especially at the transition.  The ball moves through the air like a dart.  The ball falls out of the sky like it was dropped from the space station, checks and stops in its' own tracks.
  • Forgiveness – “Birdie” I am so glad that I picked the Tour Preferred MC irons and not the MB.  You will get away with a bunch of sub-par shots.  I do not know if it's me but compared to a set of MB that I saw at Golfsmith, the top line and sole seem a tad bit larger on the MC's.
  • Control – “Par” looking past the gap, the short irons (9-PW) are fairly easy to control with a normal swing.  I started running into problems with the 8 and 7 irons trying to find the 160-165 mark.  I tend to over/under compensate to dial in a yardage with these, anything from a dead pull to a straight block.  It is going to take some serious range sessions to get these dialed in.

Mid Iron Score – 85/100

Tran1.jpg

Long Iron Performance (5,4,3)

  • Accuracy – “Par” Because I found these to be at least ½ - a full club longer than my current gamers it will take me some time to trust and let the club do the work.  I had some very loose shots trying to find 180, 190, and 200+ with the long irons.  I was either short or very long on approach shots to the green.
  • Distance – “Birdie” the best way to describe it, it's like having the distances of three hybrids in your bag. LONG LONG LONG !!!!!  The 3 iron easily replaces my 5 wood.
  • Trajectory – “Birdie” Very High but piercing.  I absolutely love hitting knockdown and stingers with the long irons.  A simple change in your setup changes the ball flight with ease.
  • Forgiveness – “Birdie” Don't let the words Tour preferred shake the knees.  The Long irons are surprisingly forgiving.  Again, you will not be penalized much on off center hits.
  • Control – “Birdie” the words that come to mind, “dial a shot”.  If you have it in your arsenal the long irons can do it.  Compared to my normal Gamers, I would not hesitate one second to game these right away provided the distances were dialed in.

Long Iron Score – 90/100

Long.jpg

Performance Notes:

Since the weather is holding up here in San Antonio, I got three rounds under my belt with several sessions at a local driving range.  Two rounds were played at my home course, the other at Boot Ranch just north of the Alamo City.  I managed to card an 83 on the first round getting use to the set, followed by a 77 a week later.  I played Boot Ranch very conservative.  Fairway, middle of the green, two putt for par type of course management.  I walked out of there with a 78, not bad for playing it for the first time.

It would be unfair to comment on my range sessions, although the weather averages in the 70's in South Texas in the winter months, Most of the ranges here do not cycle range balls until early spring.  So what your hitting feels like sponges with the texture of a ping pong ball.

TOTAL PERFORMANCE SCORE – 88/100

Who said Texas was flat ???

Golf.jpg

  • General shape – going with Teardrop here.  Impressed on how well the shape hides the technology behind the set.
  • Top Line – To me the top line seems a little thicker on the TP MC's.  Don't get me wrong, it's not GI thick. You'll have to judge it on your own, for the record I love it.
  • Sole – Perfect!  Not too shallow, which I was expecting in “Player Irons”
  • Offset – Very little if any, not too much to report here
  • Graphics – I wish they kept the badge, printing out “Tour Preferred” took away from the looks of the club.
  • Unique Details – The set is a combination of Forged and Cast.  From what I understand the MB are forged throughout the set.  The short irons do not have the Speed pocket or the hollow cavity, kind of weird….
  • How do they compare to other clubs in its category – They will do just fine, Taylormade needed to bring back the TP line for better players.

Looks Score – 90/100

Sound and Feel

  • How do they Feel – “Par” I am probably going to catch a lot of flake for this from the guys who say you cannot tell the difference between Forged and Cast irons.  YOUR GOING TO FEEL THE DIFFERENCE HERE my friends.  When the set transitions from the 8 iron which forged to the 7 iron which is cast you will feel what I am talking about.  I do not know if it is the casting + speed pocket + hollow cavity, but the feel changes noticeably.
  • How do they sound – “Par” the Forged short irons give you the Classic “Thump”, not a Mizuno “feels like butta” thump but pretty darn close.  The sound changes dramatically with the mid and long irons, kind of a “Crack”.  If you played/demo'd the Rocket Bladze, the sound will be very familiar…..

Sound and Feel Score -  Forged 95/100  Cast 85/100

Likelihood of Purchase (LOP)

  • Would I buy this – Like I mentioned before the only club that had a slot in my bag for more than a couple of rounds was the Y-Cutter wedges.  Since I have had the opportunity to compare this set to 2 other players sets (Nike Vr-PC 13' and Nike Vr-PC 14') and a set of Admas CB3's, it just felt more comfortable and confident hitting my gamers.  Will multiple rounds change my mind?  we shall see.  I plan on using this set for a couple months to see if I can dial in the yardages.  Would I buy a set?  50/50

LOP Score – 80/100

Subjective Notes

The Tour Preferred CM's flat out looks sexy.  The brush nickel finish gives it a classy look and hides the modern day technology packed into the iron head very well.  Kudos to Taylormade for bringing back the TP line and releasing three sets for golfers to choose from.  I was expecting them to tweak current offerings, slap the TP Badge on, and call it a day.  To my surprise they introduced three new solid sets that should do well in the 2014 season.

Total subjective Score 86/100

I am still kind of proud of myself when given “Card Blanche” when I was asked to do this review.  I could have ordered the” knock your socks off” set up, but stuck to what I knew.   I was pretty cool to show up at my club or the driving range and having people look at this set, saying “what in the hell are these?”  My overall impression of Taylormade irons has changed for the better, did you feel that? the earth just shifted.  Without a doubt I could put this set in my bag and post some decent scores.

Total Score 87/100

all.jpg

  • Will this set be in your bag?   Yes for a couple of months, I want to see if I can fine tune the yardages.  Who knows, these could be my 2014 gamers.
  • Who would you recommend this set to? Scratch – 15 HCP.  Do not let the “Tour Preferred” scare you.  The MC's are surprisingly forgiving.
  • Have these irons changed you Impression of TMaG?   As stated in my conclusion, YES!.  Now I am trying to resist the likely hood purchase of the SLDR.
  • What would you Change? NIX the Tour Preferred; replace it with the iconic badge.  If there was a way to forge the 3-7 irons, fill in the cavity, and remove the speed pocket, this set would be my gamers instantly.
  • What feature would you like to see evolve with this model?   To be honest, I'm just glad that they brought TP back.  I'm pretty sure TMaG already has something up their sleeve.

all2.jpg

Well Guys and Gals, the Honeymoon phase is now over.  It has been just over three months with the 2014 Taylormade tour preferred irons and here is the end of my review.  First,  a big thank you to My Golf Spy and Taylormade golf for letting me participate in this hands on review……..  Here it goes.

Let me start off by saying that this set really intrigued me from the get go.  I don't know what it is , it's like ordering  a Sprite and a restaurant, expect the taste of a Sprite , you take a “Swig” and it's water.  The initial taste knocks you off your kilt, so to say.   Let me explain:  If you decide on purchasing a set of these, don't expect these irons to replace your current sticks without some major adjustments.  It took me at least 3-4 rounds with the configuration that I ordered to find out what the distances were, a trip to Edwin Watts to have the lofts weakened on the 7 6 5 4 and 3 iron, multiple range sessions to get to where I was comfortable with bagging these.  My Golf Spy member, TXCATMAN, saw the madness firsthand on a par 3 at Valeer Golf Club just north of San Antonio.   Par 3, 190 yards, long story short, 7 irons are not supposed to fly over the pin 200 yards in to the drink for bogey…

When I first started this review I hinted at distance gaps at the transition from Forged to Cast + Speed Pocket.  The PW, 9-iron and 8-iron were no trouble getting used to.  Fantastic feel of a forged club, distance very similar to my gamers.  The rest of the set, if not adjusted correctly is on STERIODS !!!!  I would put the 3-iron against anyone's 3 wood that they carry…..

Interesting enough at last weeks Texas Valero Open volunteering at the practice facility, TXCATMAN and I had the opportunity to get within a couple of feet of the players bags as we handed them range balls.  I also walked down the hitting line a couple of times to see what TMaG staffers had in the bag.  I only saw 1 set of Taylormade Tour Preferred MC's (Justin Leonard)  Unless I missed it, I saw more sets of 2012 Tour Preferred MC and MB's……call it what you will.

I'm pretty confident that this set would probably benefit someone's game.  I cannot stress enough, if you decide to pull the trigger and purchase the MC's, to get properly fit for the set.  If I could change one thing about the design of the set:  FORGE the entire set AND have the design of the 8 iron progress towards the 7, 6, 5, 4, and 3 iron (Minus the speed cavity and speed pocket)

Will I continue using them ? sure I will.  Going to keep them in rotation for the Spring and Summer.

FINAL RATING:  PAR

Those irons look amazing in the bag. Looking forward to this review.

They do look good. I have a guess on where the big gap may happen. Can't wait to see if I am correct!

Blade

I couldn't get into the look of RBladez. These look great. Yardage gap? Not surprising really with the different construction between the long and short clubs. Do you have a way to check the lofts and make sure something's not off there? Looking forward to it!

hckymeyer

Good looking clubs Hula, I'm excited for more details!

Can't wait to see what the speed slot shows up in next...

:taylormade-small:

Good catch on the forged vs cast clubs. Not sure how they could forge something with a slot that literally takes up all available space.

I'm still torn on the looks, but can't wait to read more. Congrats again Hula on being selected and good luck. There will be more opportunities for others, so be sure to read  http://forum.mygolfspy.com/topic/9910-forum-testing-how-club-testers-will-be-chosen/

Pictures at address compared to gamers please   And of course congrats can't wait to hear the review as these look stunning.

Note taken.  I plan on posting address pics of current gamers and another set of player irons that I have for 2014.

Lofts are spot on,  Had them double checked by the pro at my club.

You can DIFINATLY tell the difference between the 8 and 7 iron.  8 iron is almost butter soft, Not well struck Mizuno soft, but soft

Yea with hot thin faces transitioning to a solid forged head, a large gap seems inevitable.  Will be interested in how that works out.

Testing has begun....  Trying different shots with a Left to Right Cross wind.....

They sound pretty good

Txstcatman

Hula, these look sweet! Smart move going with the Tour 90 to keep variables to a minimum compared to your gamers.

Can't wait to hear more about these as you play them, and the pics so far look great. Sorry we couldn't get together before my vacation trip to play, but perhaps before my work starts up again we can.

:adams-small:

Just to add a little to this, I had a chance to hit a 6 iron in the new cb today and it had a much better feel than my MC tour preferred. If I had the money I would put these through a serious test.

i was gonna say the same thing! they sound a lot better than i was expecting and they look amazing too. love the photos

and just to confirm, you're right about the forging! i just checked the taylormade japan website that lists the specs out for these irons and looks like PW - 8i are forged (S25C) and 7i - 3i are stainless steel cast (431SS)

http://japan.taylormadegolf.com/product_detail-472-specifications.html

From the original pic I thought the soles looked a bit boxier than a typical players iron. Is that true or just the angle of the pic?

Nicely done Hula! Definitely looking forward to hearing your next part and see if you've gotten used to the gap.

Any plans to adjust the clubs loft to ease the gaps?

Great pictures, those are pretty.

Those are the plans,  I contacted TMaG about "adjusting" the cast clubs and they informed me that I could go 4 degrees either way.  I was a little apprehensive about how the cast would respond to adjustment.  The set is at the shop to weeken the 7 6 5 4 3 irons.  Going to put them to the test and will revise the post if I see any changes.

Cool. It'll suck if everyone who buys them needs them adjusted because of the gap, but also good to know if it can be fixed.

Now THAT'S a freaking review. You hear me? THAT'S how you do it.

Excellent job Hula

nice write-up! I was curious about how the feel would transition from the forged/no slot to cast/slotted. Good job!

Taylormade tour preferred mc irons review.

These irons are for the average to good player. They are the most forgiving forged irons in the collection. So, if you are a 10 handicap daydreaming about knocking that down to a 5, or if you simply could use a little extra height in your ball offered by the wider sole, these are irons you want to have in your bag.

As I mentioned, I love the look of the club! When I took them for a round, I found myself making sure that others subtly saw me pulling them out of my bag. It’s like an expensive watch you want everyone to notice, but you don’t dare point it out.

A compact, shallow cavity delivers stability and workability, while the Precision Weighting Port pretty much guarantees a consistent swing weight. A straighter leading edge, less-cambered sole and a thin topline all adds up to one attractive iron. If you have a problem with digging (surely I’m not the only one), you will appreciate that the less cambered sole will help correct this.

I have to admit, I really did not understand just how beneficial Inverted Cone Technology was, until I found myself on the 6th hole in an undesirable position. If these irons were going to impress me, this was the time to do it. This was a sink-or-swim moment. I knew that this was a shot that I would traditionally end up mumbling a few choice words under my breath as I walked (not drove) for the next close hit. Interestingly, the scenario did not quite play out like this.

When they say that the Inverted Cone Technology helps to boost ball speed when faced with off-center contact, they are not exaggerating! I tried to nonchalantly hide my enthusiasm while jumping in my cart, but I failed miserably. That one swing earned a great deal of trust in my relationship with these irons.

Now, if you are looking for a club that is going to miraculously deliver amazing changes in your game, you will not find it here. The MC irons don’t necessarily provide a game improving undercut, but they sure do a fantastic job at assisting with mishits, thanks to the thoughtful perimeter weighting. With less offset, you are granted control to shape your shots more effectively.

These are irons that feel very natural; you can take them out the first time and feel good swinging them without a break-in or adjustment period. You will notice that it is almost as if they melt through the turf as they make contact; the ball is super soft off the face. I appreciate that they offer solid and consistent ball flight and shape. These are irons that you only need to swing a few times to feel comfortable making them a permanent fixture in your bag.

It is hard to put my finger on exactly what I like most about these irons. At first glance, I would say it’s the appearance, but we all know that looks are not delivering a good game; they are merely an added bonus. I do like the minimal heel-to-toe radius paired up with just the right amount of camber, allowing for a clean and precise cut to the turf with very little resistance.

If by chance you need a little (or less) assistance with your game, the Taylor Tour Preferred MC irons have CB and MB relatives. The CB offer a deep and lower weight for a lot more forgiveness. They also help to find that sweet spot consistently every single time. The MB irons are for serious players who are all about feel and control. They do not have the same carbon composite badge, so there is no altered feeling at impact. If you are somewhere in between average and expert, you will like enjoy what the MC irons have to offer.

taylormade tour preferred mc forged irons review

"We worked obsessively with our Tour Staff to shape the Tour Preferred MC irons into something that looks perfect to the better player's eye, while at the same time incorporating feel, workability and stability.." -Brian Bazzel Taylormade Project Leader - Irons Product Creation

The creation of the TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC Forged Irons starts with an exclusive 6-step forging process, which produces a more precisely shaped and finished head that looks and performs beautifully. The sole is moderate to narrow in thickness and less cambered, preventing deep digging. The leading edge features minimal heel-to-toe radius with the ideal amount of camber to cut cleanly and precisely into the turf with little to no resistance. Additionally, the advanced groove design promotes more spin and control from the rough.

TaylorMade's precision-weighting port is incorporated into the TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC Forged Irons, guaranteeing precise swing weights while ensuring optimal and consistent CG location in every clubhead to promote optimized ball flight in the long-, middle- and short-irons.

TaylorMade Tour Preferred Forged Irons Review

Josh Babbitt

THP believes that some of the best reviews come from the people out there playing golf and one of our slogans is “For the consumer, by the consumer”. What better way to find out about the latest and greatest in the world of golf equipment than from other golfers from different handicap levels. TaylorMade Golf is getting ready to release a new iron line to the world called Tour Preferred and it is made up of 3 different sets of irons. The MB, MC and CB irons each are geared towards different skill levels and each have characteristics in terms of performance/forgiveness. Here is a brief video with the company shot by THP explaining the new sets.

Testing 10 golfers from the THP Forum were chosen to get a set of irons and work on a long term review. Each golfer has been given the task to work with these irons over many months and update their thoughts in an ongoing review thread on the forum for the world to follow and decide if these are the right set for them. You can follow along with these reviews that will be filled with pictures and thoughts by clicking on the links below associated with each set of irons.

50 Words or Less

The TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB is the best looking TaylorMade iron in quite some time.  True blade.  Players only.

TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB Irons (3)

Nothing generates more interest amongst the golf freaks than the release of a new TaylorMade Tour Preferred iron.  Needless to say, the announcement of the 2014 TaylorMade Tour Preferred Muscle Back (MB) irons had all of the avid TaylorMade fans drooling and dying to get their hands around the grips.  Like everyone else, we at PluggedInGolf.com were curious and wanted to see how the new Tour Preferred MB’s would stack up to the rest of the clubs of the season.

TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB Irons (10)

The new TaylorMade TP MB’s are a pure blade and look every bit of it.  They have brushed chrome finish with  nice thin topline and sole.  If you’re looking for that player’s club appearance, this is club is every bit of that.  It has a very minimal basic look and is certainly a sharp looking golf club .

TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB Irons (15)

Sound & Feel

At first strike of a golf ball, I immediately noticed the TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB’s had a very signature “old school” whack that some of us may remember from blades made pre-1996.  The sound of these irons helps the TP MB’s maintain that classic traditional theme consistent with their looks.

The feel on the Tour Preferred MB is a little bit firmer than I would expect from a modern day forged carbon blades.  This leads to a fairly responsive club, but a bit more sting on mishits.  That said, the sweet spot is not pea sized – there’s a good hitting area on the face of the club.  Still, you better be precise with the TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB’s because heel and toe shots are going to haunt you.

TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB Irons (1)

Compared to my current set of irons, I actually lost a little bit of distance with the TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB’s and had a little bit of a higher launch as well.  This may be from the stock KBS Tour shafts that I am generally not too comfortable with.  The KBS shafts and I have just never gotten along well.  The TP MB’s are still very easy to manipulate your shot shapes with and perform the way you’d expect a true classic blade to perform .

TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB Irons (5)

Classic blade irons are not for the golfer that is faint of heart.  These TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB’s are arguably my favorite TaylorMade irons since 2009 and are a nice throwback to a traditional blade that has been rare from the major manufacturers in recent years.  The TP MB’s are a tough, unforgiving animal, but if you are a big TaylorMade fan and have the cash and game to contain the beast, these clubs are going to be something that you will want to check out this season.

Very good club taylormade Forged mb irons. Should just keep improving these clubs . They look great.??

' src=

They were one of the better looking clubs TM has made in a long time. I have to say, once the honeymoon wore off, I was pretty unhappy with these irons. Felt like the true mass-produced quality kind of came through. That said, I have hit other people’s sets of these and they have been better.

' src=

Way to firm does not feel forged the 2011 taylormade mb are amazingly soft 2014 mb is hard not a fan

Proof that feel is subjective. I thought the 2011 felt awful and these felt way better. I will verify that the P730 blows them both out of the water.

' src=

I still play the original tour preferred irons from ’84, which replaced the Apex I I’s I played for 4 yrs before that. I hadn’t tried a newer iron until last month when I tried both new 730’s and 790’s. Frankly, I was surprised they looked as nice and bladelike as they did, but I didnt like the feel of either of them at all. Dead and almost mushy by comparison to my true blades. I was hitting them 8 -10 yds longer, but they are 2-3 degrees stronger which figures. Probably great for mid- handicappers, but not remotely a “player’s” iron if you ask me.

' src=

Best forged blade I ever hit! I also gamed Titleist 681, Mizuno MP 29 irons. That should say a lot about these Taylormade Tour MB Irons 2014 version. I ordered a second set of tour issue heads on eBay from a very well known eBay seller. These will be my back up set when I retire! I’m a blade man all the way! Only way to play!

' src=

Hello Bill, Your advise would be appreciated. I am making a sort of “comeback” at the age of 64 after playing a lot of golf and reaching a National handicap of 3.7 as a 52 year old…..stopped playing due to no left shoulder cartilage ( right hander) My game relied upon a long drive and short iron being a 6’3″, I possessed a good quantity of power being an ex-rugby man. Today I am trying to organize a “half swing knock down” technique using light clubs and Regular shafts. Question – What Irons would you recommend I should contemplate for this “swing”? Thanks in Advance.

' src=

Bill no longer writes for Plugged In Golf, but I am happy to answer your question.

I would strongly advise that you get a fitting with a quality club fitter like Club Champion. They can look at the swing you want to make, advise you on models to try, and you can actually hit those exact combinations to see how they perform before buying them. Going the route of “Buy, try, repeat” gets frustrating and expensive very quickly.

Thank you Matt.

Daniel Berger was on an injury-induced, 19-month hiatus from PGA TOUR competition but officially made his 2024 comeback at The American Express, where he finished a respectable T39 in his first start. This week, Berger is back competing in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course, and GolfWRX.com caught up with him to see what’s in the bag.

Prior to his leave, Berger was using some of the most storied irons on the PGA TOUR: a set of TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC irons that were released to retail way back in 2011.

Yes, they’re that old.

The benefit of Berger’s Tour Preferred MC irons is that they have cavity-back-like forgiveness, but with the look of a blade iron, and they’re forged from 1025 carbon steel. They also have a unique, visible weight in the back cavity to help place the center of gravity (CG) exactly where it needs to be throughout the set.

In Berger’s words, they’re the “perfect set.”

“I’ve got a couple different sets, and they’ve come from all over the place,” Berger told GolfWRX at Torrey Pines in 2022. “I bought one set online … just from some guy on the internet. He messaged me online on social media. It’s a perfect set.”

Not all of the clubs in Berger’s bag are old, though. On Tuesday at Torrey Pines, he was using a new Ping G430 LST driver, two TaylorMade Qi10 Tour fairway woods (a 4-wood at 16.5 degrees, and a 6-wood at 21 degrees), as well as a set of new Titleist Vokey SM10 wedges (56 and 62 degrees), and a new Scotty Cameron Phantom prototype putter.

Although Berger didn’t switch out of his trustworthy irons, he’s staying mostly up-to-date on his equipment despite the long break from competition.

Check out Berger’s full-bag specifications below at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Why is Daniel Berger using 13-year-old irons at the 2024 Farmers Insurance Open? PGA Tour golfer explains WITB

D aniel Berger is returning to competitive golf after a 19-month injury layoff. However, the clubs he carries in his bag have generated as much fan interest as his return.

Berger officially returned the previous weekend at The American Express and is currently playing at the Farmers Insurance Open. Interestingly, he is playing with a set of irons that is no less than 13 years old.

It is a TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC irons set, a product so old that the manufacturer has discontinued its production. Daniel Berger has to buy them secondhand from whoever sells them online.

The reason Daniel Berger is using TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC irons at the Farmers Insurance Open is because he prefers them over newer models. According to the PGA Tour news service, these irons feature cavity-back-like forgiveness, the look of a blade iron, and they're forged from 1025 carbon steel, a combination that Berger finds optimal for him.

Daniel Berger was quoted as saying by the PGA Tour news service about how he got his irons:

"I've got a couple different sets, and they've come from all over the place. I bought one set online … just from some guy on the internet. He messaged me online on social media. It's a perfect set."

What else is in Daniel Berger's bag at the 2024 Farmers Insurance Open?

Daniel Berger's TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC irons set goes from iron 4 to pitching wedge, or seven places in the bag. However, the rest of his clubs are not as old as the irons.

Let's take a look at the complete contents of Berger's bag (via the PGA Tour news service):

  • Driver: Ping G430 LST (10.5 degrees) with Fujikura Ventus Black 6X shaft
  • 4-wood: TaylorMade Qi10 Tour (16.5 degrees) with Fujikura Ventus Black 7 X shaft
  • 6-wood: TaylorMade Qi10 Tour (21 degrees) with Fujikura Ventus Black 8 X shaft
  • Irons: TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC 2011 (4-PW) with Project X 6.5 shaft
  • Wedges: Titleist SM9 (50 degrees), Titleist SM10 (56 and 62 degrees) with Project X 6.5 (50), True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400 (56 and 62) shafts.

Berger began to experience problems with his back in 2021 but kept playing until The Memorial Tournament in 2022. After finishing T5 there, he retired from competitive activity to resolve his injury.

Berger worked during the subsequent months with Canadian specialist Stuart McGill, who helped him rehabilitate during 2023. The American was ready to start the 2024 PGA Tour season with the first event on continental soil, The American Express , where he finished T39.

This week, Berger is playing in the Farmers Insurance Open, where he finished the first round in T90, with a score of even.

Why We Like It

Ping realizes off-center hits are part of the game, even for single-digit players. This iron doesn’t ignore that unpleasant reality but places more of an emphasis on a clean aesthetic and more pop than a ball coming off Aaron Judge’s bat. The construction is almost metal-wood-like with a hollow-body design using C300 maraging steel for the face—the same type of metal used in landing gear for aircraft. The sole has an “arcing cascade” that aids in the flexing of the face and combines with strong lofts to ensure the desire for distance is satisfied.

Characteristics

  • A weight pad pushes mass down to lower the center of gravity and to help the face flex.
  • An EVA polymer improves feel and sound without hindering face flex.
  • Tightly spaced grooves (an average of four more per iron) increase spin.
  • 7-iron: 29 degrees; PW: 42 degrees

Ratings are based on players’ assessments in three key performance areas.

Ball Flight

Playability.

Great turf interaction. Cuts through the grass to create a perfect divot. Forgiving as all get out. Almost feels like you can’t miss with this in your hand.

The squared-off profile frames the ball nicely. Clubface is stable throughout the swing, especially at impact. Compresses the ball nicely. Shots get up quick and land soft. Tight shot dispersion.

Compact, blade-like design with a surprising amount of forgiveness. I imagine I’d still find the front of the green if I didn’t find the sweet spot. Mis-hits stay on line.

Why Impact Is Critical to Your Iron Play

Consistent shot shape requires one skill above all others: the ability to make flush contact with the ball. It’s the No. 1 fundamental in golf, and without it, this game can be an eternal mystery. Here, Sean Hogan, one of Golf Digest’s Best Teachers in Florida, helps you improve your impact from tee to green.
