Talent Cycle fixed my son's bike right on the spot! They were both kind and professional. Sophia U., NYC
Had a flat. Went to this shop for the first time. The guy there (Edwin I guess) replaced the tube and oiled the chain in record time. I thought he was very professional and the shop was incredibly clean and well organized. He clearly takes a lot of pride in the shop. Will definitely be coming back. Michael B., Denver, CO
Stayed open an extra fifteen minutes to help fix my flat. Very thorough and found a tiny shard of glass in the tire that had given me two flats in a week. Thank you! Ben D., NYC
The technician is always helpful and never over charges me for things I don't need (unlike other bike shops in the area). Little repairs have been around $10, whereas other shops tell me I need a $60 "tune up" without actually explaining what they need to do. I make a point to come here when I'm in the neighborhood, even though I moved away. Irini Z., Manhattan, NY
I have purchased my current bike from Talent Cycles almost five years ago and couldn’t be happier with Edwin’s recommendation. I have been bringing my bike for tuneups, and general repairs over the years. Edwin has always offered great prices and excellent service. Admir M., NYC

Cycling is a big deal in this city. Oh, because you’ll need a set of wheels first. We know, shopping for a bike —and all the add-ons you need to go with it—can be intimidating, especially if you’re new to the pedaling scene. But luckily, New York is not shy of bike shops, so whether you’re looking to rent, repair or buy, find the best bike shop NYC has to offer that will have you cruising the best parks in New York City in no time.

RECOMMENDED: Best places for  shopping in NYC

An email you’ll actually love

Find the best bike shop in NYC

1.  bfold.

  • East Village

For folks who love the idea of leaving their subway days behind them but worry about storage, Bfold might be the perfect specialty store. As its name suggests, the East Village purveyor only sells bikes that fold, such as the Xootr MG ($269) and the stylishly hipped-out Tern GSD ($3,999)

Bellitte Bicycles

2.  Bellitte Bicycles

Who knew Queens was home to the oldest bike shop in the country? Founded in Jamaica in 1918 by Sicilian immigrant Sam Bellitte, the shop is still family owned and brings in the masses with decently priced tune-ups ($69.95) and used rides.

Zen Bikes

3.  Zen Bikes

For its convenient location, attention to service and good value, Zen is our favorite bike shop in the city for the average two-wheel commuter. With an inventory of all-new bikes and a focus on lightweight, street-friendly road and hybrid styles—Felt, Linus, Bianchi and more s pecialized bikes , ranging from $429 to $6,000—this is a city bike shop for city riders. During cycling season and especially now when things are just starting to open up, stay up to date on the shop’s free flat repair and basic maintenance classes by checking its Facebook page. After buying a new bike, you’ll also have lifetime access to free basic tune-ups or half-price deluxe tune-ups. Score!

718 Cyclery

4.  718 Cyclery

If you'd like to design your dream bike from handlebars to wheels (and even help put it together), this Gowanus bike shop will meet your needs. Focusing on adventure (mountain and touring) bikes as well as cargo bikes, 718 has pioneered the “Collaboratively Built” process. First, sit down with owner and architect Joe Nocella and sketch out your vision. He'll draw up several options (with frames from Surly, Salsa, Jones, Rivendell and more), which he’ll share in a Google Doc before you narrow down your final design. Once the parts arrive, you're encouraged to put some elbow grease into your ride alongside the shop's mechanics. More tech-savvy than hands-on? Just watch the entire process online . Collaborative builds are pricy, starting at around $1,200, but with 718’s free open-to-the-public weekly maintenance classes (Thursdays and Fridays at 7pm), you may never have to pay for a repair again. In addition, 718 hosts regular shop rides, week-long tours and races.

Kickstand Bicycles

5.  Kickstand Bicycles

  • Midtown East

This small-but-mighty bike shop located under the shadow of the Queensboro Bridge sets itself apart with owners Ben and Andrea’s passionate dedication to service and reasonably priced stock of KHS, Nirve, Masi and Torker two-wheelers. With a focus on hybrid, road and commuter bikes ($350–$4,000), Kickstand is a judgment-free zone where even the smallest repairs and most basic queries are treated with attention and respect. Not ready to commit to a bike purchase? The shop offers helmet-and-lock-included rentals ranging from $9 for an hour to $45 for a weekend. Looking to learn more about bike maintenance? Stop in at any time for a free on-the-spot tutorial on DIY flat repairs.

6.  Bicycle Station

  • Fort Greene

Bicycle Station owner Mike Rodriguez is a veteran racer and mechanic who’s been working with bikes for more than 40 years—and with each visit to the Fort Greene shop, that immense store of knowledge gets shared with the customer. With an unpretentious eye toward individualized service and competitively priced repairs (an all-inclusive tune-up goes for a hard-to-beat $49), the shop’s stock focuses on affordable used ($150–$500) and new ($350–$5,000) road bikes, fitness bikes and hipster-cherished single-speeds from Jamis and Land Shark, among others. After opened his first store in Park Slope in 1992, he moved on to Prospect Heights before landing at his current location, and Rodriguez’s deft customer service is matched only by his mechanical expertise.

7.  Joyride Bikes

Formerly Bike Slug, Joyride Bikes is a focused, knowledgeable shop that nonetheless doesn’t take itself too seriously. It consistently wins praise from customers for its comprehensive, never-fail repairs and tune-ups as well as its community-oriented attitude. Need to borrow a bike tool you don’t own? Just ask. Mechanics will also give you an on-the-spot diagnostic and can offer a basic tune up for just $65.

Redbeard Bikes

8.  Redbeard Bikes

A must-visit destination for serious bike freaks prepared to lay down cash on a pet project, Redbeard opened its first tiny location at the end of 2012 and soon upgraded to more spacious Jay Street digs. It specializes in bike fittings, the precise adjustments of seats, handlebars and frames in relation to the rider’s body that the shop’s owners liken to tailoring an off-the-rack suit ($200–$500, depending on the style of bike). Redbeard also works with cyclists on custom-built road bikes with frames from Mosaic, Parlee, Waterford and more, creating masterpieces priced up to $20,000 that cyclists will want to secure with (several of) the shop’s high-security Abus locks. During warm-weather months, check Redbeard’s blog for information on community-oriented events such as all-level group rides, women-specific classes and more.

Bicycle Habitat

9.  Bicycle Habitat

The second-largest bike shop in the city boasts a massive inventory (at least 200 fully assembled models at a time), so it's safe to bet it'll have whatever kind of bicycle you're looking for. Most popular, however, are the recreational and commuting bikes, from brands like Trek and Specialized ($350–$15,000). The six to eight mechanics in the shop on any given day are on call for speedy repairs, and three smaller—but equally impressive—locations in Chelsea, Park Slope and Prospect Heights ensure that the chain’s impeccable service and selection is available city-wide.

Bike Works NYC

10.  Bike Works NYC

The mechanics at this laid-back, nearly 20-year-old shop have a reputation as experts—which may account for the fact that half of the space is used for repairs, leaving room for about 15 two-wheelers on the shop floor. City bikes from brands like Soma and Surly (starting at $720) trend toward fixed-gear and road touring models. Those looking for custom assembly and repairs can stop searching: Local frame builders often refer cycle enthusiasts to the shop.

GT Grunge 20

Like everything else in New York, biking is big. Really big.

According to the NYC Department of Transportation, 530,000 cycling trips are made in New York City each day, and 800,000 New Yorkers ride a bike regularly. Manhattan has been a bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community since 2012, and bike lanes have expanded from 250 miles in 2006 to more than 1,200 today, crossing iconic bridges, weaving through parks, and hugging the shores of the Hudson River. Pedal to New Jersey’s Palisades (or hop a train to the Hudson Highlands) and you’ll find road biking for days. You can even find mountain biking in the city — Wolfe’s Pond Park in Staten Island, Cunningham Park in Queens, Manhattan’s Highbridge Park — and long gravel roads start fanning out just over a dozen miles away. The 40-mile TD Five Boro Bike Tour, with 30,000 participants, is (no surprise) the country’s biggest bike ride. But there are dozens of annual cycling events here worth checking out — from Twin Lights Ride to the celebrated Gran Fondo New York and a whole lot more.

Really nice morden bike shop, the decor is impressive, nice wooden floors, cool lighting, great set up.They have some really good trek bicycles. I own a trek my self, and have been riding the same one for about a decade. Last time I was at this particular trek bikes, I was looking for a large bike saddle ,during the pandemic, and they didn't have it ,but the staff was great, really good customer service, they treated me really well. Showed me some different style seats and some other accessories, which were really cool. This is definitely a top notch clean bicycle shop in forest hills queens.

They only sell Trek bikes which are great quality bikes and one of the top brands. We have been looking for a bike for my 8 years older son for the past 2 weeks. We visited 6 bike stores and shopped around online. We ended our bike hunting at Trek Bicycle today. We were met by sweet friendly Gabriela when we entered. I can't say she's knowledgeable but great customer service. She showed me the specs of the bike on the computer since she's not sure of most answers. We think their prices are reasonable considering the quality features of the bike. Definitely not cheap but worth it. One year free service for maintenance including one free tune up. 30 days period of refunding. More importantly is 50% buy back program if we want to upgrade in future. Service department on site. Parking is impossible but it is Forest Hills. Definitely recommend to check out this store!

The people here are so friendly and knowledgeable. They really helped me find the bike I was looking for and even let me test ride their bikes. Bikes are reasonably priced but they have higher end models in stores as well

Excellent service, great people, gorgeous shop. Super fast bike repair too. Lots of local info and folks.

Photo of Dmitry R.

Had my bikes serviced here in June...very reasonable and friendly service. Recently, wife was having issues with her gears. Gave them a call, they said come over. Took us in right away...explained the issue. They started working on the bike while we waited and explained everything they were doing. It is so good to have a bike shop in the area again. Great service...highly recommend.

Photo of Eric L.

Brought my bike in for a level 2 tuneup without appointment. Got it back in 2 days and it felt almost like new. Everyone there was very pleasant .

Photo of Scott S.

Brought my Specialized bike in for service after a pretty bad crash. They fixed it up nice after another local shop had it and missed a bunch of stuff. Staff was friendly, Joshua (tech who worked on my bike) didn't try to oversell me anything, explained and showed me what they found and what they would do, and kept it all in my budget.

Photo of Cesar F.

Joshua is the man. That's all I'm going to say. He told me what I needed and didn't need to get my bike checked. I didn't have to overspend and got my bike in amazing condition.

New York by bike: How to stay safe, have fun, and explore the city

N ew York, New York – While it's not known as a biking city, many bikers know that the best way to get around New York is on two wheels. The pace of the bicycle is perfect for the Big Apple, and cycling is relatively safe – as long as you stick to the bike paths. Here's everything you need to know.

You're heading down Second Avenue. The famous skyscrapers above you. Up ahead, a driver who might cut you off. You brake. You continue past the car turning left, through the sea of yellow taxis, the smell of pizza and coffee in the air and constant honking and sirens in your ear.

This is what New York by bike feels like - at least in crowded Manhattan. And as stressful as it may sound, there is hardly a more spectacular way to explore the Big Apple.

But many still believe that New York's not for bikes. While a few years ago, that might have been true, a lot has shifted. In the early to mid 2000s, you saw death-defying bicycle delivery workers racing back and forth between Manhattan's skyscrapers.

But something changed: A comprehensive cycling concept materialized with over 1,000 miles of marked bike paths. "I've been biking in New York for over 20 years and I've seen how things have transformed," says Andree Sanders, who teaches children and adults how to ride a bike in New York.

In the past, she used to push her bike to the park so that she could ride it in safety there, she says. But now it's possible to cycle anywhere in the city. Citi Bike has a modern fleet of standard and electric rental bikes in large parts of New York City, which you can use to travel throughout its docking stations.

Biking is a great, healthy, and environmentally friendly alternative to experiencing the city above ground. It's a quick way to know the places between the subway stations to understand New York's geography and topography, and what sets its different neighborhoods apart.

Read on for more tips to stay safe on two wheels in the Big Apple.

How dangerous is biking in New York City? Tips on how to stay safe cycling in NYC

The age-old question is bound to come up: Isn't biking in New York City dangerous?

Of course there's risk when it comes to street traffic - that's especially true for a city of millions in a country that loves cars, the US.

In 2020, 28 cyclists died on the roads of New York - with inattentive motorists largely to blame. A big criticism in NYC is that many bike lanes are still not structurally separated from the roadway and thus protected from cars, despite the fact that in 2021, there were more than 500 miles of separated bike lanes in the Big Apple. There are more being constructed every day.

Here are a few tips for keeping safe while biking in New York City:

1.) Never believe that you are an equal road user when on a bike. The fact is: for some cars - especially bigger ones - you will always just be air. This means you always need to aware of cars turning left, even when the light is green. And a helmet is, of course, mandatory.

2.) Make sure your head is switched on before you set off, advises expert Sanders: "When planning a route I want to find out what is the safest way for me to get from A to B." If possible, always ride in the green bike lanes. Google Maps and other apps take these into account when providing cycling directions. Try not to look down at your phone when riding, and turn up the audio on directions if you need them.

3.) No music - or at least not directly on your ears. This rule should apply almost everywhere, but in New York it takes on a special meaning. In city traffic, you're not just a tourist or commuter, but also an observer and hunter: You're constantly scanning your surroundings, trying to spot potential dangers as early as possible. For this, you need to pay full attention with eyes and ears.

4.) Of course, the wilder the ride, the higher the risk. So if you don't feel safe , slow down. Sanders says "it's about being present and knowing that you are in control when riding a bike. Just like when you're driving a car. You are in control. It's up to you how fast you want to cycle."

Should you do a New York City bike tour?

What do I get from a New York bike tour?

Many people have mixed feelings after visiting a big city. On the one hand, you've experienced and seen loads of great things. On the other hand, you're not a New Yorker.

That changes as soon as you get on a bike. The constant flow of the traffic demands that you become part of the Manhattan madness, that you blend into the metropolis.

This includes the observation that in most cases even traffic police don't care when cyclists ride through an empty intersection on a red light. On the subject, Thrillist magazine wrote back in 2018: "Study the city's bike laws, and then decide which rules you are comfortable breaking."

Cyclists become part of the energy that makes New York New York, whether attempting to go on a solo trip or joining an organized bike tour. Behind the handlebars, you're more the Big Apple than you've ever been at the Museum of Modern Art, Central Park, or on the ferry to Staten Island. And Sanders points out, "it's the fastest way to get around the city."

As they say, it's New York or Nowhere, especially when seeing it by bike.

Google-backed EV charging startup Gravity opens fastest public chargers in the US

Avatar for Scooter Doll

Gravity, a New York-based startup specializing in EV infrastructure, has opened a new public charging station, touted as the fastest in the US. With the ability to replenish up to 200 miles of range in a mere five minutes of charging, Gravity Inc.’s advanced technology will help get drivers back on roads more quickly, bringing the segment closer to time parity with traditional gas station visits.

Gravity Inc. is  an EV startup  focused on sustainable fleets and the infrastructure required to operate them. The New York-based strategy combines best-in-class mobility equipment and integrates software and customer interfaces to support drivers and passengers.

We first covered the startup in 2021 when it began rolling out a fleet of all-electric Mustang Mach-E yellow cabs around New York City. In addition to its  EV taxis , Gravity partners with building owners and parking operators to implement electric vehicle charging infrastructure to support individual drivers and large EV fleets.

At the time, we learned that Gravity was planning to open what it called the “only true fast-charging site in Manhattan” to support its new all-electric yellow taxi fleet. By October 2023, Gravity released a full suite of 500kW EV chargers , easily the fastest non-trucking capabilities we’ve seen to date.

This technology caught the eye of Google Ventures (GV), who led a successful seed funding round for an undisclosed amount last November. With funds secured, Gravity has been able to roll out dozens of UL-Listed EV chargers in the US, providing the fastest speeds to the public starting today.

Gravity’s brings the fastest EV charger to drivers in NYC

Following an event held in Midtown Manhattan this morning, Gravity has opened up access to 24 500kW EV charger systems – hailing them as the fastest in the United States. Beginning today, fleet and commercial operators and EV owners can visit the Gravity Charging Center and test the technology for themselves.

Gravity states the new charging center exists in a parking garage through a partnership with Related Companies, in which the former mounted its ceiling-mounted 500kW Distributed Energy Access Points (DEAPs) within the footprint of existing parking spaces. Furthermore, Gravity says no utility upgrades were made to the building or surrounding grid, providing working evidence that installations are easily replicable at any parking site in the US.

That’s the plan, too. Gravity says it plans to accelerate EV adoption and the green transition of the electrical grid with charger equipment, which is the fastest. Faster than any competitor, including Tesla. Gravity CEO Moshe Cohen elaborated to Reuters :

If you look at how many (Tesla) Superchargers are added per year, we can add that many or more to grow our network. There’s nothing blocking that.

Cool development. I like the overhead charger cable setup. I've thought about doing something similar in our garage to manage cables overhead /out of the way (one level 1 and one level 2 charger), but haven't gotten around to it.

Gravity says its 500kW EV chargers, which are about the size of a carry-on suitcase, can deliver up to 2,400 miles of range in a single hour or up to 200 miles in five minutes. While those charger speeds are the fastest in the US, most EVs can’t come close to reaching a 500kW rate while charging.

That said, that much power and charging speed can equate to faster rates for all, ensuring each vehicle achieves its maximum rate. This is also encouraging technology for the future, as Gravity’s chargers will be able to continue delivering the fastest rates as EV platforms advance to handle higher speed caps.

Looking ahead, Gravity hopes to deploy thousands more fast chargers at new sites around the US each year, but will require more funding to do so. Cohen said the company will continue fundraising efforts, exploring “quite of bit of interest” it has already received from potential suitors to expand nationally as soon as possible.

The Gravity Charging Center is located at 401-471 West 42 nd  Street, New York, NY, 10036. If you’re in the area, visit them and report back!
