Should you consume Heavy Cream on the carnivore diet?

I am a firm advocate for self-experimentation to see what works best for you as an individual. This way you know first hand what suits your body's needs.

For me, on my personal carnivore journey - I began with classic carnivore . I felt great and the improvement to my mental clarity (and many other benefits) was significant, however, I found that I lost weight and some muscle and struggled to maintain a weight I felt and looked better at.

I later introduced a little milk, some fruits such as dates and berries and also honey and maple syrup (in moderation) which helped with energy levels and facilitated the readdition and maintenance of the weight and muscle mass that I feel more comfortable at.

Bearing in mind that I do exercise 6 days per week, I believe that for me - the addition of a few higher-carb foods on the animal-based carnivore diet is beneficial.

Of course, some foods (highly processed, refined sugar-based foods) should be avoided if you are looking to optimise your health.

I think it is important to not be too rigid and do what is best for you, whilst using the above as a guide and the consideration of Heavy Cream is something you need to think about on a personal basis, depending on your goals.

new year, new thread to help document my weight gain as I push to 300 pounds and beyond 😍  

I started the year around 263 - I had been gaining so well until I got a stomach bug 🤢 so dropped from 270.   

in January and February I did several “stuffing weeks” where I stuffed myself with high calorie food every night for a week! my fiancé/feeder is giving their all to help me reach my gaining goals, nothing makes me more excited than waking up feeling my doughy belly feel bigger and heavier AND seeing the # on the scale go UP! I am almost 280 now and I’d love to gain another 60 pounds 💜

just this week I polished off 2 more of those 2 pound tubes of donut custard filling (3 in a week!) as a post stuffing snack while using my toys and getting fed.. it’s the best ever 😩 💦

Often, when you set out on a weight loss journey, you may consider whether alcohol and weight loss mix and whether you’ll need to give up alcohol completely in order to make the most of your efforts. The answer I’m going to give you today is ‘No, not completely.’ That may make some of you happy to hear! In fact, when it comes to the question “Does alcohol make you fat,” it’s not actually the alcohol that causes you the problems. There are 4 predominant issues that I cover in this video and below that actually cause you to gain weight if you drink often. Let’s dive on in and find out what they are! **Problem #1 Blunted liver processing and metabolism. When you drink alcohol, your body considers it a poison and focuses its efforts on metabolizing it before anything else. Because of this, the livers’ job of metabolizing fat is severely blunted. Studies have shown that this process, necessary to stop your body from storing excess fat, can be affected by up to 75%! Also, when your liver is busy trying to metabolize alcohol, it gets severely depleted of your vitamin and mineral resource, especially B vitamins. One particular symptom of a lack of Vitamin B is tiredness. Think back to your last hangover – Now you probably understand why you felt so tired! **Problem #2 Increased storage of fat from food and sugary drinks. Building on top of weight gain and alcohol problem #1 comes the issue of fat being stored more readily due to the blunting of your liver function to metabolize fat. During times of drinking alcohol you should be more choosy about what you eat, opting for foods that are higher in Protein, but lower in Carbs and Fat.. Even a meal that you would normally think of as healthy, such as salad, avocado, and salmon, could end up causing you to store more fat. This goes back to the blunting of the liver function and it is not being able to keep up with metabolizing the extra calories effectively.. Your choice of drink will also be important, as anything that is sugary, like cocktails, will obviously be higher in Carbs than a straight drink like a vodka soda. The next problem of alcohol and weight gain is its negative effect on sleep, particularly sleep quality and duration. That moves us to the next problem.. **Problem #4 A negative effect on hormones. When it comes to weight gain and alcohol, this problem is a big one too. Best and Worst Forms of Dairy on Keto Thomas DeLauer. Dairy Concerns. A1 Casein. Beta-casein proteins make up around 30% of milk’s proteins and comes in one of two genetic varieties: A1 and A2. A2 is the original variety that all cows used to have, with A1 appearing somewhere around 5,000 10,000 years ago through a mutation found in some European herds. BCM-7 is a bioactive opioid peptide which is formed in much greater levels when we consume dairy with A1 beta-casein when compared to A2 beta-casein. Lactose. Study Annals of Internal Medicine. This study was conducted because milk is often recommended as therapy for patients with peptic ulcer. The study examined the effects of various forms of milk and 0.15 M NaCl (control) on gastric-acid secretion in five patients with duodenal ulcer during a period of remission and in five normal subjects. A significant increase in acid secretion in both groups was produced by 240 ml of whole, low-fat, and nonfat milk. Ghee. Ghee, a type of clarified butter, which is a fancy term for pure butterfat while it has similar properties to regular butter, ghee is like an upgraded version with a richer taste, higher smoke point, deeper color, and more nutrients. Whey Isolate. Concentrate vs Isolate. Concentrate: This is the least processed form of whey there is, which means it’s the cheapest form, the form that contains the most additional non-protein stuff (most notably lactose and fat), and the form with the most potential to cause digestive issues (due to that aforementioned lactose). Isolate: This is what you get when you take whey concentrate and filter out the vast majority of the stuff that isn’t protein, thus leaving you with a much more pure (i.e. more protein per scoop), easily digestible (bye-bye lactose), and expensive form of whey. Greek/Bulgarian Yogurt. When healthy bacteria (S. thermophilus and L. bulgaricus) are added to milk and allowed to ferment, the fermentation process leads to changes in the bioavailability of nutrients found in the final product. As the pH decreases, both phosphorus and calcium are converted into their soluble forms, the proteins become calcium free and more easily digested by proteolytic enzymes, making them more bioavailable. Greek yogurt has roughly twice the protein concentration when compared to regular yogurt. During the production of Greek yogurt, regular yogurt is strained multiple times to remove the whey. Bulgarian Yogurt. Bulgarian yogurt is tangier and a bit creamier than Greek yogurt unlike regular or Greek yogurt, traditional Bulgarian yogurt is not strained. Additionally, the bacteria used are different Bulgarian yogurt uses a combination of L. bulgaricus, Acidophilus, S. thermophilus, and Bifidum strains. Heavy Cream. Heavy cream is the thickest cream of them all and has a minimum of 36% milk fat Per half cup, it contains about 414 calories and 28 grams saturated fat.. Light cream (aka coffee cream) has about 20% milk fat and is primarily used in coffee, although it can also be used for baking and in soups it has about 350 calories per cup and 23 grams saturated fat.. The traditional way of extracting cream is to wait 12 to 24 hours for the butterfat to rise to the top and then skim it off. Cottage Cheese. The process starts with curdling milk this is done by adding an acidic substance like lime juice or vinegar to warm milk.. When the acidity of the milk increases, curds of casein protein separate from the whey, the liquid part of the milk. This can be done by adding a bacterial culture that produces lactic acid or a food-grade acid such as vinegar. After the curd is formed, it is gently cut into pieces that allow additional whey to drain from the curds. The curds are further cooked and pressed gently to expel more whey the curds are rinsed and salt is added. Creamed Cottage Cheese is made by combining nonfat cottage cheese with a light cream dressing. Creamed cottage cheese contains at least 4 percent milkfat, comparable to whole milk.. Half & Half. Half-and-half is exactly what it sounds like, equal parts whole milk and light cream it contains about 12% fat, which makes it richer than whole milk (which contains 3.5% fat), although less rich than light cream. Per cup it has 315 calories and 17 grams saturated fat. Milk. For example, in the United States, federal regulations specify 3.25% fat in whole milk, 2% in reduced fat milk, 1.8% in Semi-skim, about 1% in Low fat, and 0.0 – 0.5% in Skim milk. Sour Cream. Sour cream, also called cultured sour cream is made by adding a culture of Streptococcus lactis to pasteurized light cream and incubating at 72˚F until the desired flavor and thickness is reached

Thanks for the video! Will be working on recipe and combine with workouts. I have a Lean body, but have always had trouble gaining weight. This should help me get to my macros a lot easier!

i just use eggs and some soup herbs for the taste, water, baking soda (or salt) and potassium citrate. then i have everything essential together in a tasty shake. the protein powder and the heavy cream are not important cause i have everything that i need from the eggs. and i don’t need to add extra fat, cause there is enough in the egg yolk already and it gets me lean (i am still 23kg over weight). eggs are cheap.

There is Bulgarian Goat Feta Cheese( I leave to Thomas team to addvertise if they want) Here is the nutrition breack down 100g= 452 cal 32,52g protein 2.17g carbs 35.59g fat. To compare with feta cheese from cow milk 100g= 264 cal 22g protein 16g carbs 17g fats. I’m open to say where you can buy online. Good luck all.

Very useful information. I find whenever I drink I become very lethargic for the next 36 hours or so, which really sets me off my workout routine. No doubt has something to do with REM sleep cycles and vitamin/nutrient depletion. I assume all or most of this information applies to women as well?

It’s ok to drink. Still losing 2lb a week typical cut rate, I drink 1-2 drinks per night. Count each calorie and make sure you maintain a calorie deficit each day and you’re good. Don’t get caught up in preferential fat storage windows, it’s true but makes little difference. Cals in cals out is king. Now get to work!

Keto or being fat adapted gave me the most gains. I make mine for function not taste. 2 cups egg whites, 5 raw eggs and 10 table spoon of olive oil. Why not Heavy cream? Less liquid drink.

Is heavy whipping cream the same as heavy cream? I just bought heavy whipping cream 1 gram carbs per serving, no sugar, 50 calories per tbls. You are more likely to get salmonella from the egg running over a dirty shell. If someone is really worried about it, you can thoroughly clean the outside of the eggs before you crack them.

I am confused about the casein. I always was told Casein protein was linked to cancer. So is this A1 what they are talking about? I used to hear keto people say to add protein powders with casein and I was like umm that causes cancer?

Myself and 2 of my brothers have been having 2 of these shakes per day along with our individual choices of beef for our bulk. My question is, would my body react differently to the cream than my brothers and it cause me to bloat? I feel like my stomach is growing bigger, faster than anything else. I don’t remember having this issue when on just steak and eggs. I have been on the supplements you suggested in another video as well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I don’t understand the whole idea here. The “extra” things (protein) you mentioned at the end of the video will be converted to carbs by your liver and either used or stored as fat (or stored in the liver and muscles to some degree). That makes the whole thing non-keto every day you do it. Sounds like way too much protein. Can you please explain? Thanks!

I’ve just started getting serious about getting my body in shape to set myself up for my later years and have noticed that on days that I did not drink the prior night, I get a much better workout at noon. Trying to gain weight, reading random stuff online and came across this somehow. My questions are 1.) if this is actually a good idea at all and 2.) what's the point of the ginger ale? Everything I've read says 6 oz. of each mixed together, 3x a day. Thanks, Alien

A lot of information back then was born out of speculation. Neither the heavy cream nor the ginger ale is necessary. Heavy cream was a staple in the diets of bodybuilders and strongmen back then, and the ginger ale was probably thought to improve the digestion of the shake. We know that ginger ale will not improve your digestion, so it is simply not necessary, not to mention nasty tasting probably. Vince Gironda was ahead of his time in many areas. But, with that territory comes certainty without the facts. These days, we call that "Broscience."

I agree with IW up till broscience! Like you said, he was ahead of his time, that ment trial and error! That does not make it broscience. They just didnt have someone before their time that had already tried things, so they were the ones trying different things out. I fully agree, no need for this combo nowadays, Im sure even VG figured out it was not worth it!

I believe it would be hard(there are a few), not impossible to find any ginger ale with actual ginger in it, vs ginger flavoring, so no real ginger! Im sure back in the day, it had real ginger!

I've never tried this. But I do use heavy cream on a regular basis, both in my coffee and then as liquid for my shakes. It sits better than milk and still provides some density to the shakes. I know a lot of the guys back in the day would use heavy cream. Arnold's Encyclopedia also recommends using heavy cream in the shakes.

Well I learned something new today!! What type of cream is used? What are the total macros used in a standard drink?
I know it seems "hardcore" to drink this concoction, because it probably would taste disgusting. But there is simply no reason to drink one of these today. We have protein powder, so we don't really need a source of protein from heavy whipping cream. And the heavy whipping cream that they used back then was probably unprocessed and the ginger ale has a higher concentration of ginger than today. So there is just no point. Vince Gironda was a pioneer because he dared to experiment. And he opened up a lot of good ideas to the bodybuilding world. The only problem was (From what I have read.), when he came to a conclusion, he was so stubborn about it and everyone had to do it his way or not train at his gym.
