10 Things You May Need To Know About Laos E-Visa

Nowadays it’s more simple to travel to many countries with an e-Visa, including Laos. Electronic visa service (e-Visa) was applied by the end of 2019, which has attracted much more foreign tourists to Laos. This blog will show you everything about Laos e-Visa.

Table of Contents

1. What is Laos e-Visa?

The Laos eVisa or Laos Approval Letter is an official electronic travel authorization that simplifies the process of obtaining a visa to travel to the country. A valid Laos electronic Visa allows citizens from eligible countries to visit for tourism purposes. Once approved, the Laos online visa will grant its holder a stay of up to 30 days in the southeast Asian Nation.

2. Where can you get Laos e-Visas?

Travelers can apply directly for e-Visas here: Laos e-Visa Official Website

3. How long does it take to get a Laos e-Visa?

E-Visa is processed within 03 working days after receiving the completed application and full e-Visa fee.

Please note that your application will proceed on the same day if you apply in the morning session. If you apply in the afternoon session, then your application will proceed on the next day of the Lao local time (GMT+7).

4. How much must you pay for Laos e-Visa?

The e-Visa fee will range from $35-50 depending on your nationality. You can pay by credit card online.

5. Who can apply for an e-Visa?

Lao eVisa facility is available for the following countries: see list

6. Laos e-Visa Requirements

In order to submit a Laos e-Visa application, it is necessary to have the following:

  • An eligible passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival in Laos, containing at least 2 blank pages
  • A recent digital photograph of the traveler, passport-style
  • A valid debit or credit card to pay the Laos eVisa fee
  • A current email address at which to receive the approved Laos online visa.

Applicants are required to provide both the date of intended arrival and details of the accommodation where they will be staying in Laos on the application form.

Some additional supporting documentation, such as a travel itinerary and proof of sufficient funds to cover the stay, may be requested by officials at the border before the traveler is permitted to enter Laos.

7. How to Apply for Laos e-Visa?

  • Complete the online application form
  • Attach the required documents.
  • Pay the online application fee.
  • Wait for the visa application to process. This takes about three working days unless there is a problem with your application.
  • Download the e-Visa Approval Letter. You will receive it in your email. Once you get the approval letter, you have 60 days to use it.

8. Do I Have to Print the Approval Letter?

The current visa rules for Laos require visitors to print the e-Visa Approval Letter . A paper copy is needed to enter the country.

Passengers must bring their Laos e-Visa printout with them when they travel. It will be needed at border control. They must show it to an Immigration Officer upon arrival in Laos.

It is not acceptable to show the PDF on an electronic device or a photo of the e-Visa. Travelers who cannot present a paper copy of the Approval Letter may be denied entry.

9. Which entry ports will tourists be able to enter Laos through?

Once the electronic Laos visa is approved, the holder will be able to enter Laos through one of the following entry ports :

  • Wattay International Airport (Vientiane Capital)
  • Luang Prabang International Airport  (Luang Prabang Province)
  • Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge I (Vientiane Capital)
  • Pakse International Airport (Champasak Province)
  • Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge II (Savannakhet Province)

10. Other common Questions about e-Visas

What if I lose my e-Visa?

If you lose your e-Visa approval letter, you can reprint it by accessing it from your email.

My passport is expiring soon, can I still get a visa?

All visitors need to have a passport valid for more than 180 days from the date of arrival. If your passport validity is less than 180 days, you must renew or apply for a new passport before you can apply for eVisa.

What are the photo requirements for an e-Visa?

Your photo must be:

  • Sized 4 x 6 cm.
  • Taken within the last 6 months.
  •  With no shadows.
  • With a plain white background.
  • You must face the camera in the photo.
  •  Have a neutral expression.
  •  Have both eyes open.

If you are a national of one of the European Union countries, Canada, the USA, or Australia, you will be able to apply online for an e-Visa instead of waiting in long queues at the airport to obtain your visa on arrival. The countries that are now eligible for the tourist online visa can apply for their Arppoval Letter online from home.

Besides E-visas,  Visas on arrival are also very popular with most tourists to Laos. The visa on arrival is a Laos tourist visa that allows its holder a stay of up to 30 days in the country. It is possible to extend the stay, however, travelers must pay 10 USD for each additional day they choose to stay in Laos. To get a visa on arrival, you need a valid passport with at least 6 months remaining on your travel document, an application form, two photographs that meet the requirements, and cash to pay for the respective fee. You also need to be a citizen of an eligible country.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Your passport must have at least six months validity remaining from the date of entry and at least two blank visa pages.

Tourist visas are required.  Tourist visas on arrival are available at certain ports of entry, and generally permit a stay of 30 days. You can extend the visa up to an additional 60 days through the Department of Immigration in Vientiane. At certain ports of entry, you can use an eVisa. See  laoevisa.gov.la  for more information.

To obtain a visa in advance, and for other information about Lao entry requirements, please contact the  Embassy of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic , 2222 S St. NW, Washington DC 20008, tel: 202-332-6416, fax: 202-332-4923.

For a business visa:  Business visas can only be arranged in advance. After you arrive, you can generally extend your business visa for one month. Please contact the  Embassy of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic  for specific information.

You must have a valid entry stamp and be within your authorized period of stay, or have an exit visa, to depart Laos. Otherwise, you will be fined and may be arrested.

If your U.S. passport is lost or stolen in Laos, you must obtain both a replacement passport and an exit visa.  The U.S. Embassy can issue a limited validity replacement passport expeditiously; however, the Lao government requires 3 to 5 working days to issue an exit visa. Contact the Foreigner Control Office at the Department of Immigration in Nong Buek for an exit visa. The office is located on NongBuek-Dongnaxok Rd. Phone: +856 21 212 520. If your lost passport causes you to exceed your authorized period of stay in Laos, you may be subject to overstay fines unless you make prior arrangements with Immigration.

Laos does not allow its citizens to have dual nationality.  Under Lao law, Lao citizens who have been outside of Laos for extended periods or who have taken a second nationality are no longer considered to be Lao citizens. Lao immigration officials may deny entry to or exit from Laos for individuals using multiple passports.

Traveling with children:  Travelers with children are advised to have documentary evidence of your relationship to the child, such as the child’s birth certificate or permission for the child’s travel from the parent(s) or legal guardian, if they are not present.  U.S. citizen children born out of wedlock to a Lao national and a U.S. citizen may experience difficulty departing Laos.

Travelers with HIV/AIDS:  The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Laos.

Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction , and  customs regulations  on our websites.

Safety and Security

The Embassy recommends U.S. citizens reconsider travel to all of Xaisomboun   Province . U.S. Embassy personnel are restricted from traveling to Xaisomboun Province due to past incidents of violence.

There are large amounts of unexploded ordnance (UXO)   in Laos  left over from the Indochina War.  UXO is found in some parts of Savannakhet, Xieng Khouang, Salavan, Khammouane, Sekong, Champassak, Houaphan, Attapeu, Luang Prabang, and Vientiane provinces. In particular, UXO is found along Route 7 (from Route 13 to the Vietnam border), Route 9 (Savannakhet to the Vietnam border), and Route 20 (Pakse to Salavan). Never pick up unknown metal objects and avoid traveling off well-used roads, tracks, and paths.

Exercise caution in remote areas along the border with Burma.  Bandits, drug traffickers, and other people pursuing illegal activities operate in these border areas.

Find information on  Travel Advisories  on our website.

  • Petty thieves target foreigners  for pickpocketing (especially in tourist hubs) and theft of unattended property, including in vehicles. Thieves on passing motorcycles snatch purses. Petty theft increases during major Lao holidays. Residential break-ins also occur.
  • Scams:  In tourist areas, shop owners may rent motorbikes to tourists, have someone “steal” the motorbike, and charge the tourist for the cost of the “stolen” motorbike. Be cautious of rental arrangements and never provide your passport as collateral.
  • See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information on scams.

Victims of Crime:  U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy for assistance. Report crimes to police in the place where the incident took place. You may also contact the Tourist Police at 021-251-128. Tourist Police generally speak English. Contact the U.S. Embassy at 856-21-48-7000; after hours call 856-21-48-7600. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting the crime.

See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Help you find appropriate medical care;
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police;
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent;
  • Explain the local criminal justice process in general terms;
  • Provide a list of local attorneys;
  • Provide our information on  victim’s compensation programs in the U.S. ;
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution;
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home;
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport.

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy for assistance.

Tourism:  Laos’ tourism industry infrastructure is very limited, especially outside major cities. Tourists participate in activities at their own risk. Emergency response and subsequent appropriate medical treatment is not available in-country. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. See our webpage for more  information on insurance providers for overseas coverage .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some laws are prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification:  Laos does not routinely inform the U.S. Embassy of the arrest of U.S. citizens in a timely fashion and does not always allow consular access to arrested individuals. If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our  webpage  for further information

Police and legal system bribes and informal procedures:  It is common for police to target foreigners to pay bribes for alleged traffic offenses. The Embassy is not usually able to provide assistance in these cases. Foreigners arrested for unruly conduct or damaging private property will often be held in police custody without formal charges being brought against them until they pay an indemnity to the injured party. This process usually takes a minimum of two to three weeks.

Relationships with Lao citizens:  Lao law prohibits cohabitation or sexual contact between foreign citizens and Lao nationals except when the two parties have been married in accordance with Lao Family Law. Any foreigner who cohabitates with or enters into a sexual relationship with a Lao national risks being interrogated, detained, arrested, or fined. Foreigners are not permitted to invite Lao nationals of the opposite sex to their hotel rooms, and police may raid hotel rooms without notice or consent. Foreigners, including U.S. citizens of Lao descent, are not allowed to stay in the homes of Lao nationals, even family, without the prior consent of the village chief and local police.

Foreigners who married a Lao national outside of Laos should have their marriage certificate authenticated at a Lao Embassy in the country where the marriage took place before traveling to Laos.

Possession of, trafficking in, and manufacture of drugs are serious offenses in Laos  and result in lengthy prison sentences or the death penalty. Some restaurants offer “happy” or “special” menu items -- particularly “pizzas” or “shakes” -- that may contain opiates or unknown substances. Consuming these items is illegal.

Adventure Tourism:  Laos has a developing adventure tourism industry that includes, but is not limited to, zip-lining, bungee jumping, rock climbing, and off-road bikes and buggies. Safety standards and training requirements for personnel operating these activities and safety inspections of the equipment may not be equivalent to those required for similar activities in the United States. We recommend that travelers check the safety records of adventure tourism operators. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about  adventure travel .

Water Safety:  Travel by speedboat on rivers in Laos is dangerous, especially when water levels are low. White water rafting, kayaking, tubing, and other water-based activities, including swimming in the Mekong, are dangerous. Foreigners have drowned or been seriously injured. Do not participate in any water-based activities while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Please be aware that safety advice will be minimal, and there may not be warning signs at tourist sites.

Hotel Safety:  Some hotels in Laos do not meet U.S. safety standards for security and fire safety.

Faith-Based Travelers:  See our following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report  – see country reports
  • Human Rights Report  – see country reports
  • Hajj Fact Sheet for Travelers
  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTQI+ Travelers:  There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in Laos.

See   our  LGBTQI Travel Information   page and section 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance:   There are no special provisions for persons with mobility issues.  Sidewalks and street crossings are not accessible for people in wheelchairs. Buildings, medical facilities, public transportation, etc. are generally not accessible .

Students:  See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:  See our travel tips for  Women Travelers .

For emergency services in Laos, dial 0192 (tourist police) or 0195 (ambulance).

Medical facilities and services in Laos are extremely limited and may not meet basic international standards.

Contact information for hospitals/clinics is found here .

We do not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers accept only cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage .

We strongly recommend  supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation. Every year the Embassy sees cases of U.S. citizens who fall ill in Laos and are unable to get necessary health care because they don’t have adequate insurance. Serious medical cases frequently require medical evacuation to private hospitals in Thailand by ground ambulance or air ambulance. Hospitals in Thailand and Laos require large deposits prior to treating patients. The State Department does not pay medical bills.

Border Crossing Hours: All of the land border crossings between Laos and neighboring countries close during the night hours. The Friendship Bridge that connects Vientiane to Nong Khai, Thailand, closes from 10 p.m. – 6 a.m. daily. While it is generally possible for ambulances to cross the Vientiane friendship bridge after hours, it sometimes takes several hours to arrange for the crossing to be opened, even in cases of severe medical emergencies. Travelers should inquire locally about the hours of other border crossings .

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure the medication is legal in Laos.

Air Quality: Visit AirNow Department of State for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

Vaccinations: Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:

  • Road accidents are a major cause of death.  Defensive driving is imperative; many drivers pay little attention to traffic laws.
  • Poor driving conditions:  Traffic is chaotic, and road conditions can be rough. Few roads have lane markings, road signs, and stoplights. Drivers widely ignore those that exist. Speeding, reckless passing, and failure to obey traffic laws are common. Many drivers are underage, unlicensed, inexperienced, or uninsured. Driving under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs is common. Motorcycles carry as many as five people, greatly impeding the drivers' ability to react to traffic. Road conditions worsen during the rainy season and landslides are common, including on major routes connecting provincial capitals.
  • Avoid driving at night . Road construction sites are poorly marked, appear with no warning, and can be difficult to see at night. Roads are poorly illuminated, many vehicles have no operating lights, few bicycles have reflectors, and trucks without reflectors commonly park on unlighted roads.
  • Motorcycles and motorbikes:  The U.S. Embassy prohibits  Embassy personnel in Laos from using motorcycles, motorbikes, and scooters due to a high incidence of accidents and lack of available medical care. You should also consider not using these vehicles.
  • Emergency vehicles:  There are no government ambulance services, and a scarcity of private ambulances makes it difficult for accident victims to receive timely medical attention.
  • Intoxicated drivers:  Drunk driving is rampant, especially in the evening.

Traffic Laws:

  • Traffic accidents:  A driver involved in a traffic accident should remain at the scene and attempt to contact the police or wait for the police to arrive to prepare an accident report. If renting a car or motorcycle, contact the rental company and its insurance agent.
  • Traffic moves on the right, but vehicles use all parts of the road.

Public Transportation:

  • Public transportation  is scarce and the transportation available is very limited after sunset. There are a limited number of buses and shared van/covered pick-up truck services.
  • Inter-city transport  is provided by buses, vans, pickups, and trucks, any of which may be in poor repair.
  • For-hire vehicles:  Taxis or cars-for-hire are available only at major transit hubs such as border crossings and airports. “Tuk-tuks” -- three-wheeled, open-sided vehicles -- are available in tourist areas, but are frequently in poor repair, and drivers generally speak little to no English. Car taxis are also available by phone.

Visit the website of Laos’  national tourist office  and our  road safety page  for more information

Aviation Safety Oversight:  As there is no direct commercial air service to the United States by carriers registered in Laos, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not assessed the Lao civil aviation authority [DLP1]  for compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Laos’ air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the   FAA safety assessment page .

Discovering The Beauty Of Laos: A Guide To Obtaining Laos Tourist Visas

Table of contents, extending a laos tourist visa, tips for traveling to laos.

Laos is a Southeast Asian country that is known for its stunning natural beauty, rich culture, and friendly people. It is also one of the least visited countries in the region, which makes it an off-the-beaten-path destination that is perfect for those looking for a unique travel experience. To visit Laos and stay there for a specified period of time, most travelers will need to obtain a valid visa. A Laos tourist visa is a document that allows foreigners to enter the country for the purpose of leisure or business. In this article, you will have a deeper understanding of the Laos tourist visa online , as well as the most convenient way to obtain it.

An Overview of Laos Tourist Visas

There are two main types of Laos tourist visas : the e-Visa and the traditional visa. Both these visas allow holders to visit Laos for tourism or leisure purposes. The electronic visa (e visa) can be obtained online, while the traditional one requires tourists to apply at the Embassy or the Consulate.

The Laotian Government formally introduced the E-Visa Laos, an electronic travel authorization, in July 2019. Nowadays, the Laos e visa is more popular owing to its convenience and quickness. Foreigners who wish to have a short trip to Laos should take advantage of this e visa because it just takes a maximum of 03 business days to get it. A Laos tourist visa online allows a single entry into the country and is valid for 60 days after receiving the approval letter.

Get To Know About Laos Tourist Visa Requirements

There are certain Laos tourist visa requirements that need to be met so that the visa application process goes smoothly. Applicants should know that these documents are easy to obtain:

  • The most essential item is a passport. The passport you use to apply for a Laos e-visa must be valid for at least 06 months from the intended arrival date in Laos. There should be at least 02 unused pages for the Immigration Officer to stamp
  • Each applicant needs to have a photograph of themselves. This photograph should be taken as recently as possible (within the last 06 months)
  • An email address is vital because the applicants will receive all the notifications regarding their visa application via email.

Steps To Apply For A Laos Tourist Visa Online At Global Visa Services

The process for obtaining a Laos tourist visa becomes easier owing to the electronic visa system. For an e-Visa, the process can be completed entirely online and typically takes just a few minutes. Applicants can apply for a Laos tourist visa online on the Global Visa Services website by following these simple steps:

  • Click on “Apply E-Visa” on the top of the homepage to start the application process
  • Fill out the online application form with visa details and personal information. These data need to be provided: number of visas, type of visa, transportation method, airport of arrival, processing time, full name, gender, date of birth, nationality, passport number, date of arrival and departure
  • Pay the visa fee using one of these payment methods: a Debit/ Credit card, PayPal, American Express, or a Wire Transfer to the Bank of Cyprus
  • Receive the confirmation email from Global Visa Services and submit your application. All you need to do afterward is wait for the visa to be processed, typically within 03 business days.

Once your visa application is issued, we will send you an email with your e-visa in PDF format. Before traveling to Laos, you should print out a copy of your e Visa and bring it. The Immigration Officer at the port of entry will check your Visa and your valid passport to decide whether to permit you to enter the country or not. If everything is in order, the immigration officer will stamp your passport and allow you to enter the country.

Steps to apply for a Laos Tourist visa online

Steps to apply for a Laos Tourist visa online

A Laos tourist visa allows its holders to travel within Laos and stay there for up to 30 days. This is a single-entry visa; thus, those who wish to remain in the country longer than 30 days must extend their stay. The Laos visa extension can be made at the Immigration Office in Vientiane or at the Immigration Division Office of the province where you are in. A 30-day tourist visa can only be extended twice for a maximum stay of 90 days.

Overstaying a visa in Laos is subject to fines, and it will make your visa application in the future more difficult. Therefore, it is recommended that you request a visa extension before your current visa expires.

To ensure your trip to Laos is perfect, you should take note of some helpful tips below:

Laos is a deeply traditional country, and it is important to be mindful of cultural norms and customs. This includes dressing modestly, removing shoes before entering temples and homes, and being respectful when visiting sacred sites.

The language barrier in Laos is another aspect that travelers should be aware of. While many people in Laos can speak some English, especially in tourist areas, it is still a good idea to learn some basic phrases in Laos to make communication easier. This will also show respect for the local culture and help to foster positive relationships with the locals.

Tips for traveling to Laos

Take time to explore the natural beauty and try local food. Laos is home to some of the most stunning natural landscapes in Southeast Asia, including the Mekong River, the waterfalls of the Bolaven Plateau, and the caves of Vang Vieng. Your trip cannot be perfect unless you visit these top-rated attractions. Additionally, it is worth a food tour when you travel to Laos because Laos cuisine is a unique blend of Thai, Vietnamese, and Chinese flavors. Some popular dishes to try include sticky rice, laap (a type of meat salad), and tam mak hoong (a spicy green papaya salad).

In conclusion, a Laos tourist visa is a document you must have if you intend to travel to Laos. Our team, with more than 10 years of experience in visa consulting services, will assist you in obtaining a Laos visa swiftly and conveniently. Don’t hesitate to contact Global Visa Services and apply for a Laos tourist visa online right away!

Entry requirements

FCDO advises against all but essential travel to parts of Laos.

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Laos set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, send a message to the Lao Embassy London Facebook page .

COVID-19 rules

Laos accepts the UK’s proof of COVID-19 recovery and vaccination record . Your final vaccine dose must be at least 14 days prior to travel. If you cannot produce one, customs and immigration officials have the authority to ask you to take a COVID test.

Visitors arriving with COVID-19 will be responsible for all treatment costs.

Departure rules

The official policy is still that unvaccinated individuals have to take an ATK test no more than 48 hours before departure. There are reports of this not being enforced. However, customs and immigration officials have the authority to ask you for a pre-departure test.

Passport validity requirements

Your passport should have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the day you enter Laos.

Airlines only allow boarding of flights to and from Laos if you have 2 blank pages in your passport.

Check with your travel provider to make sure your passport and other travel documents meet their requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document, or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Visa requirements

Applying for a visa.

Visa on arrival is available at Vientiane’s Wattay International Airport, and Luang Prabang’s airport, but not at all land borders. You need to confirm in advance before attempting to cross.

You can apply online for an e-Visa - you must submit your application at least 3 days in advance of your entry to Laos.

Visa extensions

Tourist visas will only be extended twice in Laos. Be aware if you do not renew your visa within 90 days, you will face a fine of 20 million kip, deportation to your home country and a ban on returning to Laos.

To stay longer (to work or study, for business travel or for other reasons), you must meet the Lao immigration department’s entry requirements .

Vaccination requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s Laos guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of country. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Hi TA family

I'm traveling from the US and was wondering which visa option is best? A bit confused...

Thanks in advance

30 replies to this topic

Assuming that you are flying into one of Laos' international airports: you can choose either option.

Difficult to say which method will get you through immigration faster.

The VOA is $40 USD, e-visa is $50, so many folks choose the less expensive option.

Many posts here on the subject, perhaps have a read through them.

I'm thinking saving the $10 and doing it upon arrival. that $10 pays for a meal so why not?

You can get 10 meals or 10 large beers for $10.

Thank you Michael. I will be doing the VOA because I'm arriving on Oct 30 so not enough time for the E-Visa. Is there a counter in the airport in LP?

No. You need a visa for Laos.

So seasamh is the same person as Cynthia L?

Two profiles are confusing for us and prohibited on TA.

Easy to happen without any nefarious intent. I think I might still have 2 and that came about through logging in with google account or facebook account and with my personal email address. Confusing for older people. I would think that if it was easy for you to tell they were the same people then they are not up to no good.

I am not suggesting they are up to no good. 😊

Probably just ignorent or lazy.

Laos Announces Updated Tourist Visa Fees

laos tourist e visa

Laos has announced an updated tourist visa fee structure following the full reopening of the country to tourism early this month.

A notice issued by the Consular Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, last week provides an update on the latest visa-on-arrival fees for tourists of different origins.

Visas provided on arrival for foreign nationals from all nationalities will be charged USD 40, except for Chinese and Vietnamese nationals, when applying for a tourist visa at an international checkpoint, according to the notice.

Chinese or Vietnamese citizens applying for a visa on arrival to Laos will be charged only USD 20.

The notice states that foreigners of Lao descent and their family members, or family members of Lao citizens who hold foreign citizenship, will also be charged USD 40 per person for a visa on arrival.

Laos  announced a full reopening to tourism  on 9 May allowing vaccinated arrivals to enter the country without any testing requirements.

All international checkpoints are now open for entry and exit by Lao citizens, foreign residents, tourists, and other types of visitors.

Those wishing to visit Laos may apply for a visa at a Lao embassy or consulate abroad or via the e-Visa online system.

Visas on arrival have also been reinstated at major international checkpoints, such as the Laos-Thailand Friendship Bridge and Wattay International Airport.

How to apply for the Laos Tourist eVisa?

The Laos Immigration Department has recently introduced a system that allows citizens from some nations the chance to apply for electronic visas instead of standard paper visas, which means that travelers from eligible nations don't need to visit an embassy or mail in their passport for review.

This new system makes both the application process and the entry process a lot easier since eVisa holders have a separate line when passing through customs. The eVisa application process is very simple and 100% online.

Once the application is submitted and accepted, the applicant will receive the eVisa approval letter, which must be printed and shown to the immigration officers upon arrival . Yes, it’s that simple.

Applying with iVisa

To apply with iVisa just follow these simple steps:

First , read all the information and fill out your details in the Laos Tourist eVisa application form . Then, choose the processing time that best suits your needs.

Second , double-check and verify the information you provided in the form, and then pay the iVisa processing fee (see below on the Calculator Tool for more information on service fees).

Third , attach any documents required and click on the submit button to apply for your Laos Tourist eVisa.

At iVisa we have been in the business of processing visa applications for many years and we have worked hard to improve all our services. We strive to make our processes quick and easy to follow. But you don’t have to take our word for it. We recommend that you go over to our reviews section and read what our past customers have said about our services. We’re sure you’ll find them to your liking.

To take into account

Having the Laos Tourist eVisa does not provide an automatic right of entry into the country. An immigration officer at the port of entry may refuse entry to anyone who is unable to fulfill the immigration requirements, or that their presence in Laos would be contrary to national interests or security.

The Laos Tourist Visa is a travel permit issued by the Lao Government to foreign nationals wishing to visit Laos for tourism purposes. It allows visitors to explore the scenic beauty, rich cultural heritage, and unique lifestyle of Laos for a specific period, typically 30 days. The visa is usually a single entry, meaning you’ll need a new visa to return once you leave Laos.

  • Photographs: Two recent passport-sized photographs are needed. The photos should be in color, taken against a white background, and show your full face with no head covering (unless for religious reasons).

  • Proof of Accommodation: Evidence of where you’ll be staying during your visit. This could be a hotel reservation or a letter from a host in Laos.
  • Financial Means: Proof that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay. This could be a bank statement or a letter from your bank.
  • Travel Insurance: While not always mandatory, it’s highly recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses.

Laos Tourist Visa for US Citizens

For US citizens planning a trip to Laos, obtaining a tourist visa is a straightforward process, with multiple options available.

Requirements for US Citizens

US citizens are required to have a passport that’s valid for at least six months beyond the date of their entry into Laos. Two passport-sized photos are also necessary for the visa application.

If applying for a visa upon arrival, US citizens must also provide evidence of a return or onward ticket. If you are applying at an embassy or consulate prior to your journey, you should check their specific requirements as they may differ.

Visa on Arrival

One of the most convenient ways for US citizens to obtain a Laos tourist visa is by getting a visa on arrival. This option is available at international airports and some land crossings in Laos.

The process is simple: you fill out an application form (which you’ll get at the airport or border crossing), provide two passport-sized photos, and pay the visa fee (around $35 for US citizens, but this may vary). The visa on arrival allows a stay of up to 30 days.

The E-visa is another option for US citizens, which can be obtained online before travel. This saves time on arrival and can speed up the entry process. To apply for an e-visa, you’ll need to complete an online application form, upload a digital photo, and pay the e-visa fee. The e-visa is valid for a single entry stay of up to 30 days.
