Downtown Nassau is just a 15-minute walk from the cruise port, which comes with classic amenities like a tourist information center and free wifi. There’s even a welcome center where passengers on a Nassau, Bahamas cruise can purchase sweet snacks like fruit tarts and colorful souvenirs.

Transportation in Nassau

The easiest ways to get around on your cruise to Nassau are by foot, taxi, and ferry boat. Ferries take you to downtown Nassau and around the island. The local bus system is also comprehensive and buses arrive every 10 or so minutes to take you around the city. The small buses here are called “jitneys”, and they’re an affordable way to navigate the city, costing just 1.25 BSD one way.

Because downtown Nassau is just a 15-minute walk from the port of Nassau, you’ll have plenty of options for retail therapy. The famous Nassau Straw Market is ideal for haggling for conch jewelry and hand-woven straw bags. Or head to the Bahamas Craft Centre for Bahamian fabrics, glassworks, art, and other handmade goods.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

Use the Bahamian dollar (BSD) while you’re in Nassau. You can exchange currency at the cruise terminal. Tipping in the Bahamas is pretty similar to the United States, where you’re expected to tip bellhops and porters accordingly. Restaurants tend to include a service charge already in your bill, but an additional tip is always welcome for food services workers. Don’t forget to leave a tip for taxi drivers, at least 15% of the fare. Haggling isn’t common, but you can bargain at the local straw markets.

NASSAU, Bahamas, 01 November 2022 — As cooler temperatures approach in many places, travellers seeking to escape the fall chill should look no further than The Bahamas. With the addition of even more direct flights, seasonal hotel reopenings in the Out Islands, and a variety of new attractions and events, the destination makes for the perfect tropical escape.

The Bahamas’  ‘Stingray Whisperer’  Video Wins Travel Weekly’s Silver Magellan Award  — The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism won a Silver Magellan Award under Travel Weekly’s “Destination Marketing-Website” category for its “Stingray Whisperer” video. The video is an interview with Keith Cooper — aka Grandfather Stingray — about his work with wild stingrays and his guided tours to see them, which visitors can book through Grand Bahama Island’s  West End Ecology Tours .

Long Island to Break Ground on New Cruising Port  — Long Island is set to develop a  $250 million cruise port  in partnership with Azul Destinations and Calypso Cove Destinations. The port — which will be called Calypso Cove and is scheduled to open by early 2024 — will be able to accommodate 13,000 cruise passengers daily and will feature a 200-room hotel, golf course, casino, and more.

Bahamasair Launches Direct Flights to Grand Bahama Island  — Beginning 17 November,  Bahamasair  will offer twice-weekly direct flights to Freeport — the second-largest city in The Bahamas — from Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina. The flight will take less than two hours.

Shake Shack to Open in The Bahamas  — Shake Shack will make its Caribbean debut in 2023 at  Atlantis Paradise Island . Resort guests will be able to order the brand’s signature beef burgers and milkshakes in addition to exclusive, destination-inspired menu items only available at Shake Shack Atlantis.

The Cove Eleuthera Reopens with Elevated Experiences  — Following the resort’s seasonal closure,  The Cove Eleuthera  will reopen on 7 November. Its interiors have been refreshed, and its Freedom Restaurant & Grill was completely refurbished. The resort is also introducing an updated fitness experience featuring a dedicated yoga room that will offer guided lessons.

The Exuma Half Marathon Returns  — The Exuma Half Marathon will take place on 12 November 2022 and invites both locals and visitors to participate. Funds raised from the event will benefit one graduating student from the local L.N. Coakley High School. To participate, you can register  here .

The Bahamas Wins Big in Caribbean Journal’s 2022 Travel Awards  — The Bahamas scored several top accolades in Caribbean Journal’s 2022 Travel Awards, including “ Caribbean Destination of the Year, ” while Small Hope Bay Lodge in Andros snagged first place in the “ Adventure Hotel of the Year ” category.

Carnival freedom catches fire near bahamas; 2 future cruises from port canaveral canceled, march 25 and 29 freedom cruises have been canceled.

A fire broke out in the exhaust funnel of the Carnival Freedom cruise ship near the Bahamas on Saturday, according to a news release.

Officials said the fire was quickly extinguished, but the damage is worse than originally anticipated. As a result, the cruise line announced the March 25 and 29 Freedom cruises from Port Canaveral have been canceled.

According to the release, witnesses reported seeing a lightning strike, but the the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

“The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs,” the release read in part. “We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation. We are providing all guests on both cancelled cruises a full refund and a 100% future cruise credit so they can come back and enjoy a future cruise with us.”

This is the second time in the past two years that a fire broke out on the Freedom. In May of 2022, the ship was docked in Grand Turk when flames erupted from the exhaust funnel.
