Travel adventures from co-operative travel's experts, 16 branches to reopen under midcounties’ “co-operative travel” brand.

MIDCOUNTIES CO-OPERATIVE SET TO ENTER AGREEMENT WITH CENTRAL ENGLAND CO-OPERATIVE’S TRAVEL RETAIL BUSINESS.

16 branches to reopen under midcounties “co-operative travel brand”.

Co-operative Travel , the retail travel division of Midcounties Co-operative, the UK’s largest independent consumer co-operative, has announced that it intends to enter into an agreement with Central England Co-operative to transfer 16 of its travel branches and the colleagues who work in them, to Co-operative Travel and re-open by mid-August, subject to consultation.

The transferring stores supported 25,000 customers with their travel arrangements over the last 12 months and their addition sees Midcounties Co-operative consolidate its position as the UK’s leading travel co-operative.

The transfer is an example of the wider co-operative movement working together to reduce costs, whilst continuing to offer co-operative solutions to members’ travel needs. 78 colleagues will join Co-operative Travel and the move brings Midcounties’ portfolio of Co-operative Travel shops to over 70. The new branches will complement the existing trading areas whilst providing further growth in the East of England. Customers across the country are also able to book their holidays online at www.cooptravel.co.uk

Rad Sofronijevic, chief operating officer of Midcounties Co-operative’s travel division, said: “These have been extraordinary times for the whole travel sector, but with lockdown measures easing we’re well placed to grow from strength to strength. Travel is core to Midcounties’ long-term strategy and when we learned that Central England Co-operative was looking to emphasise its focus on other divisions and move away from Travel, we wanted to take the opportunity to bring these branches under the Midcounties retail umbrella and further strengthen our offering. With our scale and expertise, we look forward to helping grow and nurture the former Central England Co-operative branches to ensure their success in the future”.

A spokesperson for Central England Co-operative said: “Central England and Midcounties have a longstanding and positive relationship, with Central England recently joining Midcounties’ travel buying consortium following the demise of Thomas Cook. The coming together of the two businesses will enable the continuation of a Co-operative travel offer for our members and customers and the continued employment for a number of colleagues”.

The majority of Midcounties’ existing Co-operative Travel branches have now re-opened, following lockdown, with the remaining opening on 13 July. All new branches joining from Central England Co-operative will open by mid-August and will operate using a new customer appointment system that’s been implemented in all Midcounties’ Co-operative Travel since their re-opening.

Natalie Turner, head of branches for Co-operative Travel, said: “I am delighted that we will soon welcome these additional branches to our portfolio. The branches are well located and allow Midcounties’ Co-operative Travel to expand our presence across several new counties in England.

“We look forward to welcoming our new colleagues into the fold, helping them to navigate the new normal in travel and grow and succeed under Midcounties’ retail Co-operative Travel umbrella.”

The 16 branches intended to transfer to Midcounties Co-operative are Allenton (Derbyshire), Atherstone (Warwickshire), Beccles & Lowestoft (Suffolk), Castle Donington, Glenfield, Ibstock & Whetstone (Leicestershire), Diss, Kings Lynn & Thetford (Norfolk), Erdington (West Midlands), Market Deeping (Lincolnshire), Oakham (Rutland), March & Peterborough (Cambridgeshire).

Following a claim after a holiday the beginning of May I am unable to get hold of anyone and emails go unresponded to apart from an automated response to say it is received. The one contact by email I had asked for things a month after I'd provided them already so I already guessed then that nothing had progressed It says someone will contact you and no one does . You are unable to speak to anyone by phone. It makes an already horrible experience worse.

Thank you for your feedback. Please be advised we are Midcounties Co-operative Travel, an independent travel agent. If you query is in relation to travel insurance you would need to contact the company who you purchased travel insurance. The coop offer travel insurance, however they are a separate business to ourselves based in Manchester. I hope this helps. Kind Regards, Your Coop Travel service team.

BUYER BEWARE!

Avoid trade at all costs with these shambolic imbeciles, they couldn’t book an appointment, let alone a holiday. Thick staff did not send out documents and holiday was a complete disaster. Refused to honour price match guarantee. Lied about booking details and continue to lie, and refuse to accept responsibility for their procedural errors and deplorable service. So called customer services are as thick as dense fog, just don’t get it, don’t understand plainly worded English, you could draw them a diagram, they still wouldn’t. The negative reviews on here are to be heeded. They are honest and telling. Take to court guaranteed win, AVOID LIKE COVID

Co op travel Sutton coldfield

Brought a holiday. Then the following day needed an alteration. Checked online and it was only £24 extra to upgrade the room...tried amending ticket myself online but you can only do changes through agent...went to agent who said prices are different online and then quoted the alteration as £175 through co op...asked if I can get a refund, they said if I do I'll loose the deposit which was the full price of the ticket! So in hine sight best to miss out the middle man and buy direct through Jet2 or whoever your flight is with online

Spalding co-op Travel Agents

Visited our local Coop travel agents to book a holiday in October. We was greeted by a representative who never smiled once. We explained what we was looking for and throughout our time there she never smiled engaged in any conversation and didn’t appear to want to help. She made both me & my husband feel uncomfortable and unworthy. We left after 20-30 mins due to this with no holiday booked. Disappointing customer service.

Harwich coop So after my mums holiday wasnt arranged properly and didnt get picked up from airport as arranged, after 20 phone calls to shop i was forced to visit and they wonder why i got irate after listening to their pack of lies. Low and behold the same happened on return journey and they didnt care, had two weeks to sort out and still couldnt be bothered, staffs attitude was terrible. Definitley won't be using CO-OP insurance for anything

I first purchased travel insurance with CO-OP in 2019, we were meant to go on holiday to Mauritius in 2020. Due to COVID restrictions we wasn't able to fly. The travel company refunded any monies paid. with no issues. Tried to cancel the insurance was a totally different matter. I ended up just letting it go, even though I know I shouldn't Then bought travel insurance for our next trip in October 2022. type of cover was Annual Multi-trip (Gold). 3 days into our holiday my wallet was stolen. Made the claim when I got home, thinking as I purchased the gold option there would be no problem with my claim. How wrong was I After going through all the forms submitted police reports, proof of monies drawn out etc. Was told that the money was not attended by myself and not in your locked accommodation, therefore I am unable to consider your claim any further on this occasion. How am I supposed to pay for anything outside of my accommodation without my wallet?? Is theft not covered then ??? Will I be using CO-OP travel insurance again.... No If anyone asks me is CO-OP travel insurance good to use....NO

Coop Travel Market Harborough

Hopefully this is the correct Midcounties Coop travel company ?? I cannot fault the Market Harborough Branch. The staff are extremely good and thorough when dealing with my bookings and this is the reason why i will not go anywhere else. If I have any queries or problems regarding any parts of my holidays, they always deal with them very quickly. This is why I book with people that you can talk to (face to face) not a faceless web site whith no one to take ownership.

Just book direct with tui etc and save the hassle!

Have not been impressed with the Walsall branch since it’s new management. Was told the wrong price when we asked how much was left to pay on our holiday. When we called up to pay it they paid it off somebody else’s holiday instead! They did sort this out when they realised but this was only when the other person called to pay off their holiday and were shocked to find it had already been mostly paid off. It would have been much easier to book direct with tui in terms of being able to log on and make payments, that would have also been much more reliable.

Phone booking Walsall

Terrible customer service, booked cruise last year, paid in full back in February, cruise cancelled on the 25th March and promised a refund but here we are nearly 3 months later still not got it. Have called several times, very few times have we got through, left our phone number and twice they haven’t even bothered to phone back. Also never had a reply from email. Avoid

respected company

Co-op travel is not just an online store, it has branches up and down the country. In fact youre better off booking at one of the branches because the website is pretty naff. Prices are very competitive. One good thing about co-op travel is that it is unlikely to go bust because it does not just specialise in holidays. Over the years people have respected the co-op for the way that it gives back to the customers.

Over 3 months waiting for a refund for a holiday cancelled due to Covid. When contacting The company I have been told they’ve no idea when I can have a refund. Unhelpful bit were happy to make assurances that the holiday would be going ahead.

Good afternoon, Thank you for your feedback although I am sorry to read its content. Shocking!!!

Shocking!!! I’ve been awaiting an update on my holiday for weeks as to whether it will be going ahead. I was told not no pay my final balance until they could update me further on 15th March. Chased the update on the 15th, no response, followed up again on morning of 16th. Was in a meeting 2pm till 6pm, received a response at 3pm stating I had till 5pm to pay my full balance or holiday cancelled! Obviously missed this totally unfair deadline after months of chasing and being fobbed off.. Following weeks of looking at transferring dates and being totally ripped off by co-op travel (£3k - £4k more expensive than TUI after being initially cheaper with booking) I’m appalled that they are still in operation treating customers like this! I’ve now passed this and evidence to my solicitors to deal with!

Dear Louise, I am sorry to hear that you are unhappy. Can you please email your concerns to [email protected] we will then look into the matter for you. Kind regards, Midcounties Co-operative Travel.

Poor Customer Service

Poor Customer Service. I've just spent an hour on the phone dealing with JTA travel direct. I booked through Co-op Travel in Lowestoft and they can't be bothered to deal with this for me. Co-op had a joint venture with Thomas Cook and they would have been paid their commission on this and another holiday I've also had to sort out myself. Rubbish customer service and I certainly won't use them again. Surely common sense would tell you to deal with this for the customer in the hope they'll come back and book more holidays. These are the first holidays I've booked through an agent in over 10 years and I won't be doing it again.

Over 3 months waiting for a refund for…

Over 3 months waiting for a refund for a holiday cancelled due to Covid. When contacting The company I have been told they’ve no idea when I can have a refund. Unhelpful bit were happy to make assurances that the holiday would be going ahead.

Date of experience : 18 January 2021

Good afternoon, Thank you for your feedback although I am sorry to read its content. If you still have concerns and would like me to look into this for your further please email- [email protected] with the details of your holiday so I can investigate and access your booking. Kind Regards, Customer Services Department, Midcounties Co-operative Travel.

Shocking!!!

Date of experience : 16 March 2021

The cost of moving to Manchester

Just like any relocation, the cost of moving to Manchester will depend on where you’re coming from, and what you’re bringing.

If you’re planning to move the contents of a three-bedroom house (roughly 875 cubic metres of belongings) from London to Manchester, you should expect to pay £1,341 , on average.

This includes:

  • loading and unloading
  • packing services and materials
  • dismantling and reassembling furniture
  • the fee for distance travelled

The drive from London to Manchester is around 210 miles, and most removal companies charge £1 per mile (source: comparemymove , 2020).

The amount you’ll end up paying will also vary depending on your moving date, the removal company you choose, and whether you require any additional services.

Cost of living in Manchester

The UK’s second city may be home to some of the most expensive footballers in the world, but it’s much cheaper to live in than many other British hubs.

Manchester doesn’t feature in the top 20 least affordable UK cities (source: Lloyds Bank , 2019) – though it did come ninth in terms of house price growth, suggesting it’s a city on the rise.

Here’s a look at how much you can expect to pay for different goods and services in Manchester (source: Numbeo , 2020).

Property prices

House prices are generally extremely reasonable in Manchester.

In Zoopla’s UK Cities House Price Index 2019 , Manchester came 11th out of 20 UK cities, with a house price-to-earnings ratio of 5.9 .

That’s lower than the UK average of 6.7, and even better when you consider that in London, Cambridge, and Oxford, a house will cost you 13.1, 12.2, and 11.9 times your salary, respectively.

The average house value in Manchester has increased by 3.95% over the past 12 months to £202,905 . The average price for flats is significantly lower though, at £185,742 , and the average cost of a terraced house is lower still, at £154,469 . (source: Zoopla , 2020).

If you want to rent a property in Manchester, you can expect to pay £775 per month , on average – slightly above the national average of £700 (sources: Manchester Evening News , 2018, and Office for National Statistics , 2019).

Council tax

The council tax bands in Manchester for 2020/21 range from £1,149.80 per year (A) to £3,449.42 per year (H), depending on the type and location of your property. There is also a reduced rate if you or someone who lives with you is disabled.

Electricity bills

As with house prices, you can expect your electricity bills in Manchester to be around the UK average.

The average fixed cost of electricity in the North West is £86.40 per year , which is just £1.78 more than the UK average of £84.62.

And the average variable unit price of electricity in the North West is 17.7p per kWh , which is 0.2p lower than the UK average of 17.9p (source: NimbleFins , 2020).

Public transport in Manchester

There are plenty of excellent walking and cycling routes in Manchester, but in general, it’s too large for most people to be able to walk everywhere. Thankfully, its public transport system is fantastic.

The city gave the world the first inter-city passenger railway station, and it’s never stopped innovating. Manchester now boasts a plethora of buses, trams, and trains that run from around 6am to midnight, throughout the week.

You can even get a free bus service around the city centre, and many of the trains travel between Manchester and neighbouring areas like Oldham, Rochdale, and Wigan.

A weekly System One travelcard will allow you to use any bus in Manchester for just £19.50. If you want to add unlimited tram or train travel to that deal, it’ll cost an extra £20.

Find out more information about Manchester’s public transport on the new Transport for Greater Manchester site .

Working in Manchester

Manchester is thriving, and you could benefit.

According to Lambert Smith Hampton’s 2019 Vitality Index , which looks at towns and cities outside of London, Manchester is the third-best place in the UK to support growth.

In March 2020, there were 22,850 enterprises in Manchester, according to the Office for National Statistics . That means there’s one business for every 123 Mancunians .

Key sectors in Manchester include financial, legal and business services, media, real estate, biotechnology, digital and creative services – and of course, global sports brands.

Large companies like The Co-operative Group, Umbro, and the Peel Group are based in the city, while international brands including Adidas, Kellogg’s, and Siemens have their UK headquarters in Manchester.

Manchester also has five top-quality universities that serve around 100,000 students every year, and has shown its forward-looking nature with its aim to become a zero-carbon city by 2038.

Average salary in Manchester

The average full-time salary in Manchester is £29,000 , based on data from Payscale . This is slightly lower than the UK national average, which sat at £30,800 in 2020.

The best neighbourhoods in Manchester

From child-friendly to cool and kitsch, Manchester is made up of diverse towns circling the city centre, just like London and Leeds – meaning there are enough unique places for everyone to feel at home. Here are three of our favourite Manchester neighbourhoods.

A peaceful, thriving neighbourhood for families

Average property price: £525,958

A £6 million regeneration project has borne fruit in Altrincham, which was named The Sunday Times ’ Best Place to Live in the UK 2020 .

This suburban market town is surrounded by the gorgeous green belt, yet sits at the end of a tram line that’ll quickly take you the eight miles to Manchester city centre.

It also has excellent schools and an exciting bar and restaurant scene in Goose Green, so parents will be set.

The perfect neighbourhood for commuters

Average property price: £339,481

Sale is closer to the centre of Manchester, with excellent transport links, but is much more affordable for the average worker than Altrincham.

Don’t equate affordability with lower quality, though. In 2017 , the Royal Mail dubbed Sale the fourth-best place to live and work in England, and there’s plenty to enjoy on the south bank of the Mersey.

Take in regular shows at the Waterside Arts centre, enjoy live music and craft beer at The Steamhouse, and pick up a delicious tea at independent café Serendipitea.

The coolest place in town for young professionals

Average property price: £210,725

Don’t tell the Northern Quarter, but Ancoats may have nipped in and stolen the title of coolest neighbourhood in Manchester.

A quick walk through this central locale will reveal Japanese tea specialists, artisan bakeries, and multiple delicious Vietnamese restaurants – not to mention the best pizza in Manchester, mind-blowing street art, and plenty of independent theatres.

Things to do in Manchester

As you’d expect from such a large, diverse city, there’s a whole host of cultural activities available to everyone lucky enough to live in Manchester.

From Manchester Art Gallery’s pre-Raphaelite paintings and the medieval beauty of Manchester Cathedral and John Rylands Library, to Manchester Museum’s fossilised T-Rex, the city has enough cultural activities to destroy every stereotype about the north.

Make sure to also drop by Manchester Opera House, which is a microcosm of the city’s diversity. You can watch the Moscow City Ballet dance Swan Lake one week, and enjoy the stylings of drag queen extraordinaire Trixie Mattel the next – and you should.

There are a host of opportunities in Manchester for any fan of history. Visit the Imperial War Museum North to learn everything you need to know about past conflicts, and peruse the Science and Industry Museum to learn about the city’s glorious recent past.

Speaking of which, you can also make a pilgrimage to the National Football Museum. It’s only right, since Manchester clubs have won 61% of all Premier League titles. Just make sure to clear your schedule for the rest of the day, because you won’t want to leave.

If you’re moving to Manchester, you should embrace the culture, and that means experiencing a live match at Old Trafford, the Etihad Stadium – or preferably, both.

United and City’s rivalry is historically and culturally significant, and also, you get to watch some of the best players on the planet create art with their boots.

And once you’re done marvelling at Kevin De Bruyne, Bruno Fernandes, and Raheem Sterling, go have some fun at the Chill Factore snow centre, where you can ski, snowboard, and sledge to your heart’s delight.

Manchester nightlife

You can party late into the night in Manchester , at a massive variety of bars, nightclubs, and music venues.

Drink award-winning cocktails at Mahiki, enjoy live music in the splendor of a former Wesleyan chapel at the Albert Hall, and dance until your feet hurt at dozens of clubs, from the unique Deaf Institute to the iconic art-deco Ritz.

And if you want a comprehensive account of every venue in the city, Visit Manchester has you covered.

Deforestation rules could hit supply chain’s ‘weakest link’, coffee farmers warn

N ew rules that would ban UK businesses from selling goods sourced from land linked to illegal deforestation could place the burden and cost on the supply chain’s “weakest link”, coffee farmers have warned.

Small-scale producers in Colombia are calling for their voices to be heard amid fears they could lose market access due to barriers like a lack of electricity or internet, certification fees and the additional costs of compliance.

Environment Secretary Steve Barclay announced new legislation in December which will ban businesses from selling goods containing certain commodities sourced from land used illegally, with campaigners calling for coffee to be included.

It follows the EU where new rules will mean seven such products, including coffee, can no longer be sold in the bloc from December 30 this year while the US is also developing similar legislation.

Farmers in Colombia’s Sierra Nevada mountain range said they may not be able to make ends meet when the new rules come into effect.

The communities are already facing a multitude of existential challenges, including climate change, poor roads, the threat of violence and falling coffee prices, as well as mounting production and certification costs.

Yudis Camacho, a 55-year-old farmer from Siberia township in the Sierra Nevada, said: “The conditions here are very hard.

“Sometimes the requirements are very high for the little resources that we have here. That makes it really hard for us to continue growing coffee.”

Most farmers say that while they support deforestation policies, they cannot absorb the costs of expensive measures like geomapping, which helps businesses and regulators track illegal deforestation.

Jaime Garcia Florez, 59, another farmer from Siberia township, said: “We all recognise that the European market has a zero tolerance for deforestation but we have to show the regulators that this requirement has extra costs for us and a different cost for them.

“Deforestation regulation is imposed on us without consultation and we feel like the responsibility is always on our shoulders.”

Victor Cordero, general manager of the Red Ecolsierra, a Fairtrade co-operative of Sierra Nevada farmers, said the problem stems from “a complete imbalance” in the global agriculture sector.

“The main issue with the regulations is that the cost is transferred onto the supply chain’s weakest link,” he said.

“Of course, big companies can implement the regulations faster, but a small producer in Latin America will be more concerned about resolving his day-to-day issues than about these regulations.”

Mr Cordero said any financial aid that comes with the regulations will be important but politicians need to design the rules so they do not penalise those who have “historically been doing things in the right way”.

He suggested different targets for the size of the farm or company and unrolling the rules “little by little” for small producers in countries like Colombia.

Fairtrade campaigners are calling on the UK Government to ensure small producers across the world have the money and resources to prevent deforestation as well as build sustainable businesses.

Alexander Carnwath, Fairtrade Foundation’s head of public affairs, said: “The adoption of robust legislation should be producer-focused.

“This means that it must be designed and implemented in a way that ensures smallholder farmers and workers do not carry the costs and burdens of compliance.”

The organisation, which is marking its 30th anniversary on Monday, is urging ministers to include provisions in the Environment Act legislation that enable smallholder farmers to play a leading role in tackling deforestation by investing in their expertise and ensuring their rights are protected.

“We would like to have our voices heard,” Ms Camacho said. “I would like to be able to talk about how we are protecting nature.

“We are not deforesting, we are protecting animals and trying to conserve, and so we would like (policy makers) to have that in mind.”

Mr Cordero added: “Imagine getting up one day without coffee. Think about taking the metro and there is no coffee or going to buy the chocolate you love so much and you won’t find it.

“How would the world be without those small producers?”

A Government spokesperson said: “The UK is leading the way globally with new legislation to tackle illegal deforestation to make sure we rid UK supply chains of products contributing to the destruction of these vital habitats.

“This legislation has already been introduced through the Environment Act and is just one of many measures to halt and reverse global forest loss.

“We are also investing in significant international programmes to restore forests, which have avoided over 410,000 hectares of deforestation to date alongside supporting new green finance streams.”
