THE PROS AND CONS OF A HOP-ON-HOP-OFF BUS TICKET

A popular option for bus tours is the hop-on-hop-off tour variety. There are several things to consider before purchasing a ticket.

But first, let's start with the pros.

Chicago Travel Tips and Hacks

Pro | A Great Way to Get an Overview of a City

Chicago is a big town. One excellent way to get your bearings is to take the full circuit without getting off.

Usually, these circuits last no more than 2 hours in length.

And, if you like to sit atop a bus to get the best view, with the sun warming your face and a breeze in your hair, a Chicago hop-on hop-off bus tour might be for you. Of course, you can always sit down below and be protected should there be inclement weather.

Pro | Live Guides

On most buses, you will find live tour guides who will point out the important landmarks on your route, and if time permits, some short stories.

And speaking of guides, once you hop off at a certain stop along the way you can download one of audio-guided walking tours here .

Pro | Flexibility

Each pass will be valid for a certain amount of time. This means flexible sightseeing, meaning you can hop on and hop off the bus whenever you desire.

All the buses in this section run continuously along mapped routes, and with the exception of the night tours, riders have the option to board at several predetermined pick-up locations throughout the city.

Travelers can get off the bus at any of these stops and discover the landmarks for themselves (or take our pay-what-you-wish walking tours ).

Pro | Reasonable Prices

Prices can be reduced through the discount options listed above.

For example, Big Bus Tours 24-hour ticket is included for free with several tourist attraction discount passes.

Con | Usually Not the Most Efficient Sightseeing Option

With the flexibility to jump on and jump off at numerous stops and pick-up locations, the set route makes getting around the city usually the slowest option possible, particularly when compared to mass transit.

Other Chicago bus tours , where you keep the same driver and guide for the whole tour, cover much more content, deeper, and in a much shorter amount of time.

Con | No Assigned Seat

Unlike other bus tours, where you have the same seat for the duration of the tour, you won't have that with a hop-on-hop-off bus.

This can be a big problem during the high tourist season, and it's important to set your expectations around seating during the busy season.

Diane sullivan-ishiki.

Ok. Wish was alittle less expensive.

Ximena Maldonado

Karla Gonzalez

The ticket and the extras offered were better than I expected, service inside the Bus and extra support were great.

Chicago Hop On Hop Off Bus Tours

What’s the big benefit of a hop on, hop off bus service? It offers the chance to move around one of the greatest cities in the world quickly with an informed guide on the bus, then step off and actually interact with your favorite locales. Relax, walk around, then relax some more.

While walking, biking, and Segway tours are excellent for a deep dive into a specific neighborhood, the hop on, hop off bus service give the greatest overview of the delights of south side tavern pizza and Wrigley Field all in one trip. If the weather is bad – and that can happen in January and February in particular – you’ll travel in comfort and warmth with only a little rain or snow to deal with between the building and the transport. During the bus ride and walking tours, you’ll have a chance to get to know your fellow travelers and motor along with the entire family without the risk of potentially getting lost.

Tours take in all the best-loved locations along the North Side, Chicago River, the beach, and museum campus. The bus takes the guesswork out of which sites to prioritize during your valuable vacation time while still giving you time to check out the coolest exhibits and architecture along the way. You’ll keep to a schedule that guarantees you’ll see everything you intended to see.

So go ahead- take those selfies of you and your gang from the open-top bus. Pose with friends by the metallic Bean or far up in the sky from the Skydeck. Your friendly hop on hop off bus guides will take you from point to point and expertly acquaint you with what you’re seeing all along the way. Your tour guide will provide an expert explanation of everything you’ve seen.

March is traditionally when the city starts to unfreeze and Chicagoans begin exploring greater musical options in clubs and theaters. This list serves as your curated set of highlights for the month.

Rather than recommend the obvious marquee stars playing the usual sports sheds, the following five shows reflect the variety of styles and genres thriving at midsize and smaller venues.

7 p.m. March 10 at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall in Evanston

Pianist Bruce Hornsby was a radio hitmaker in the late 1980s and early 1990s, an honorary member of the Grateful Dead, a collaborator with Bon Iver and, over the last few decades, an experimental pop composer who has reshaped his hits into compelling new shapes. This show is a collaboration with yMusic, a Brooklyn classical chamber ensemble. 50 Arts Circle Dr., Evanston; tickets from $49 at www.evanstonspace.com

8 p.m. March 16 at Space

This mighty Chicago ensemble built a glowing reputation for paying homage to the legacy of David Bowie with special guests such as Sinéad O’Connor, Shirley Manson and Michael Shannon. Ex-Ministry/RevCo player Chris Connelly is the only singer in town who can match Bowie’s stature; his mighty vocals combined with this dynamic band create the unthinkable, making you temporarily forget these are vintage Bowie songs. Instead, they pull you into their majesty in real time. 1245 Chicago Ave., Evanston; sold out; www.evanstonspace.com .

Danny Brown

9 p.m. March 20 at Metro

Detroit rapper Danny Brown’s 2011 album "XXX" was a commercial breakthrough that avoided the cliches of the genre by mixing Detroit techno, psychedelia, alt-rock and compelling storytelling. "Quaranta," a sixth album released in late 2023, is similarly ambitious, featuring experimental twists, vintage beats and a psychedelic haze with tales of heartache and spiritual yearning. 3730 N. Clark St.; tickets from $28.50 at metrochicago.com

The Children’s Hour

Andy Bar and Josephine Foster have reunited as The Children's Hour.

9 p.m. March 26 at the Hideout

This is a 21-year reunion of the Chicago indie pop duo whose first record, "SOS JFK," was praised by BBC tastemaker John Peel and convinced Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan to take the band on a U.S. tour with his post-Pumpkins band Zwan. A long-awaited second album, "Going Home," is new on Chicago’s Drag City label. 1354 W. Wabansia Ave.; tickets from $12 at hideoutchicago.com .

8 p.m. March 28 at FitzGerald’s

This Chicago singer-songwriter is a ubiquitous presence around town and, over the years, she has honed her own brand of country soul and folk. This show is particularly special: It’s a release party for her long-awaited new record, "Old Sky New." 6615 W. Roosevelt Rd., Berwyn; tickets from $15 at fitzgeraldsnightclub.com .
