Be Inspired: 18 Next Travel Destination Ideas

Mirador Tres Cruces on our South America itinerary

What is your next travel destination? When we are home, that is probably the number one thing we are asked. There is a basic process we go through to choose our next travel destination, which we outline below, along with highlights of 18 of our favourite cities or road trips. Prepare to be inspired.

Often, it is the city that picks us (family, friends, key events). However, even when a portion of our travel is determined by the universe, we usually tack on an additional adventure on either end. It’s a big world, and, so far, we have explored portions of 65 countries and countless cities. Yet, there is still so much more to see.

The questions we ask before we choose our next travel destination

  • Are there any family events around the world that we want to attend?
  • When can we travel? Are there events at home that we can’t miss?
  • If we have to clear with an employer, when can we go?
  • Which hemisphere will match the season I prefer?
  • Are there any major holidays that will affect my travel plans, either that I want to attend, or avoid?
  • Who am I travelling with, and where do they want to go?
  • What is my budget?
  • Do I want to travel on my own, go on a tour, or get a guide? (See our travel resources page for the list of the companies we use.)
  • What are the travel restrictions for my next travel destination choice (visa or immunization requirements)?
  • Or, do I simply want to stay home and enjoy a staycation ?

Visas and entry

Entry requirements vary by both your nationality and destination. If you hold a passport from either Japan or Singapore, you can access most countries without a visa. Check the full Henley Passport Index to see how your country’s passport ranks. If you want to know if you need a visa for your next destination, you will need to check with your state department.

Be inspired: Will one of our favourites be your next travel destination?

To date, we have visited 65 countries and countless cities. We love going off of the beaten path and discovering something new. Natural beauty, cultural experiences, and the ability to interact are our calling cards. It was difficult to pick favourites, but we did our best. See if we can inspire you to choose your next travel destination.

South America

Lively, colourful, friendly, and fun, I loved our time in South America and can't wait to go back. Here are just a few of our favourite cities.

Buenos Aires TG5 1050126

Buenos Aires, Argentina

A city so full of life and love, it drew us in instantly. Buenos Aires is a cosmopolitan capital, filled with a mix of tradition and modern lifestyle. From holidays to everyday life, there a tango beat to this city.

Paraty Brazil 280100

Paraty, Brazil

Brazilians know this tropical paradise lined with vibrantly painted boats and traditional colonial homes. I am not sure how they kept it a secret from the rest of us for so long. This beach paradise town overlooks Ilha Grande Bay.

Montevideo Uruguay PC240134

Montevideo, Uruguay

Uruguay is too often overlooked when visitors plan their South American adventure, yet this coastal country is well worth a visit. Generally safe, it's more liberal than some of its neighbours. We visited three cities, all which should have earned a spot on this list. Montevideo, the capital city, has a European flair, while Punte del Este is a beach resort city, and Colonia del Sacramento is a historic delight.

San Pedro de Atacama PB230050 2

San Pedro de Atacama, Chile

Chile’s Atacama desert is best known as being the driest non-polar desert in the world. It is this atmosphere in the high elevation that creates endless unique landscapes and salt flats. Interestingly, San Pedro de Atacama, the main town, is a lush desert oasis.

North America

From Canada to Panama, the North American countries that we have explored are each quite unique.

Skagway Featured Image IMG 5150 116365

Skagway, Alaska

Alaska is one of those amazing places that makes it nearly impossible to pick a favourite city. For me, a summertime destination, we started in Anchorage, travelling first inland to Denali and then south on a cruise ship. Skagway, a former gold rush town, was one of my favourite stops.

lee robinson MzCeUhY3Xy0 unsplash

Vancouver, Canada

Vancouver is one of those cities where I instantly felt at home. It is friendly, livable, clean, and walkable. While the city is cosmopolitan, there is an abundance of nearby outdoor activities and natural beauty.

Oregon coast road trip P5190063

Oregon Coast, USA

We love road trips as they allow us to enjoy getting off of the beaten path as we travel between destinations. The Oregon coast, continuing down to San Francisco, California, is spectacular, offering dramatic clifftop scenery, blowholes, wildlife, redwood trees, and much more. It's an ever-changing masterpiece of nature.

Australasia

Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands

Auckland from North Head

Auckland, New Zealand

What can I say about my adopted city? I live here by choice and have for over 16 years. Unending beauty, Auckland is a city filled with an eclectic mix of nature and culture. There are seemingly endless things to do in Auckland, and even after all these years of exploration, we are finding new options.

wai o tapu P7280027 2

Rotorua, New Zealand

A geothermal wonderland near the centre of the North Island, Rotorua is a must-see unique destination in New Zealand. It's filled with natural wonders, extreme-adventure opportunities, healing spas, and cultural learning opportunities.

PA240281 3

Great Ocean Road, Australia

I couldn't include our Oregon road trip above and not Australia's Great Ocean Road. We started from Melbourne (my favourite Australian city), but the drive officially runs from Torquay to Allansford along the southern coast of Australia in the state of Victoria. Be warned, much of the drive is inland through temperate rainforest, but it is here that we spotted Koala and other wildlife.

Rarotonga Cook Islands 8270014

Rarotonga, Cook Islands

Rarotonga is a tropical paradise and one of the most popular Pacific Island retreats for New Zealanders. The Cook Islands are only a few hours away by flight, use New Zealand currency, and offer white sandy beaches and crystal clear water.

Grand Palace Bangkok Thailand PA260065

Bangkok, Thailand

A recent addition to our list, I never expected to fall in love with Bangkok, but I did. It is a colourful city filled with golden temples, elaborate architecture, and tempting aromas. The hottest city in the world may also be the most fascinating.

Taj Mahal image by Rudy taj mahal 1 2

Agra, India

This one is still on our bucket list, but we can feel the allure of the majestic Taj Mahal in Agra, India. Built as a tomb, the history is as fascinating as the structure is magnificent.

Fes Morocco 94430 2

Fes, Morocco

A labyrinth of narrow streets, many leading nowhere, means getting lost in the Fes medina is almost a must-do for visitors. And don't worry, there are plenty of people who will take a small tip to get you back to where you want to go. Fes is Morocco's second-largest city, a former capital, and a mix of the old world and the modern Fes outside of the medina gates.

IMG 1560 103584 2

Chefchaouen, Morocco

Instantly, we understood why Chefchaouen is called the blue city. It's a small, walled city, perfect for walking, camera in hand. This is a city with an interesting history.

Essaouira Morocco 98316 2

Essaouira, Morocco

A wind surfer's paradise, Essaouira is a beach town along the west coast of Morocco. Laid-back, it's a fun town filled with a mix of traditional values and familiar activities. Camels on the beach, intense sunsets, and an old-world medina, this is the city in which our girls learned to surf.

La Coruna IMG 2224 70866 2

La Coruña, Spain

Located in the northwest corner of Spain, La Coruña is a liveable beach city filled with an interesting history and beautiful beaches. We stayed in this often off the tourist track city on a home exchange and discovered a delightful place.

Lourdes IMG 3590 77046

Lourdes, France

Lourdes is a city of multiple documented miracles. It is well-known for having healing waters and pilgrims flock here daily. For tourists, it is a beautiful and fascinating village in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains.

Travel safety tips

We practice common sense around safety issues when we travel. If we wouldn’t do it at home, it isn’t suddenly safe to do it overseas. And for us, living in one of the safest countries in the world, we often need to take more precautions when we travel.

Too often we see travellers being careless, and then not happy with the result. We have written these safety guidelines for travelling in South America that included both our general guidelines, as well as some specific to various regions.

We loved Paraty in Brazil and Fez in Morocco too. I’d love to see more of Canada and the Oregon Coast is a really appealing road trip. Some really useful pointers here for planning a travel adventure.

What a great list, and great to get us thinking about good times of year to travel to different locations. I think I’ve found myself in tropical wet seasons more times than I care to remember. Upside, it’s definitely cheaper!

OREGON! You know I love this list! Thank goodness we already have plans to hit the Oregon Coast this summer or I’d be feeling all sorts of homesick! And funny – we’re going to Morocco and China this year too. I love the way you break down the benefits of different seasons in different hemispheres – very clever. Some definite inspiration here! Cheers from Copenhagen.

How to Successfully Choose Your Next Travel Destination

Need to choose your next travel destination but don’t know where you should go? I’ve been there!

Figuring out where to travel next can actually be quite tough because there are so many factors to consider. So if you’re looking for a little clarity and inspiration to choose a destination for your next trip, you’re in the right place.

This guide takes you through the questions you should ask yourself and shares traveler-tested tips on how to choose a travel destination for your next trip.

Choose Your Travel Destination: Start with the Basics

You want your trip to be a success and that starts with the right destination. But, choosing a travel destination can feel overwhelming. Contrary to the expression it’s a small world, the globe can seem larger than life when asking where should I travel next.

This can happen whether you’re planning your first trip or you’re a seasoned traveler. Luckily, and as with most big decisions, it’s helpful to break the process down into smaller pieces to sort out what’s practical (or not).

The best way to do this is to start with some concrete essential questions that’ll help you hone in on your next destination. They’re basic and practical, but they are really effective, too. These questions are the ones I ask myself when I’m faced with the same dilemma.

How much time do you have?

Important date circled in red on a calendar

Where should you travel has a lot to do with how much time you can be away. The reality is that some trips need more time than others to really make the whole experience worthwhile. I find this to be a helpful first step because I can usually eliminate some possible destinations right away.

If you’re taking a 1-week vacation or less, it’s not worth it to plan that bucket list trip to Thailand or Patagonia . Not only is the time to get there likely long from wherever you are, but you’ll spend a lot for a trip that won’t leave you feeling as if you’ve had a well-rounded experience with a true taste of the destination.

Likewise, in that amount of time, taking that road trip cross country (in the United States) will likely be a lot of driving without enough time to actually stop to enjoy the many sights and places you’ll pass.

That’s not to say that a short trip isn’t worth it! Sometimes what you have is 5-7 days or even a long weekend getaway. It’s not a reason to miss out on traveling altogether.

You can plan a National Parks trip , some beach time in Mexico , or even visit a city like New York or London. With careful planning and a willingness to fill each day, you might even plan 1 week in Spain .

On the other hand, can you get away for a 2-week trip or more? With 2 weeks, you can explore a couple of new places like Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands or pack your bags for Europe and comfortably use the high-speed trains to travel between cities and even countries. You could consider road trips like circling the Emerald Isle or driving the Oregon Coast.

Dunguaire-Castle-Ireland

Perhaps you’re at a place in your life where you have a lot of time for extended travel. If this is you, ask yourself if this type of opportunity is likely to present itself again.

You might be taking a sabbatical or be in between jobs. Either way, these are unique chances to make that dream destination a reality because you’ll have enough time to experience it the way you always imagined.

Visiting the Okavango Delta and doing a safari on a trip to Africa, traveling through multiple countries in Southeast Asia, or setting off to explore Australia and New Zealand are all on the table.

Depending on where you live and the amount of time you have to travel, certain destinations will make more sense than others. I find this question about how much time to be a really helpful starting point as I think about places I want to visit for my next adventure.

The bottom line is that regardless of whether you want to relax, sightsee, or have an active adventure, traveling too far or cramming in too much can make for a rushed and ungratifying trip.

Who are you traveling with?

Standing at the Equator in Quito Ecuador

Another important question to ask yourself is who your travel companions will be, if any. Are you traveling for a family vacation with young kids or on a couple’s trip? Perhaps you’re planning a girls/guys trip or maybe a solo adventure.

The people you travel with or without might make specific places and experiences more practical than others. You have to ask what kind of destination would be enjoyable for everyone traveling. It may also be necessary to make some compromises so that everyone is happy with the destination and itinerary.

Some destinations and experiences like trekking on a glacier , climbing Angels Landing , or visiting the 9/11 Memorial and Museum may not be right for little ones. While a quick jaunt to Portugal might make the perfect girls’ getaway!

If you’re traveling solo, is it your first time or have you been on your own before? Traveling on your own comes with unlimited freedom to make your own choices. First-time solo travelers might be more comfortable in places like Iceland or Paris .

Or you might want to explore an off-the-beaten-path destination like Romania or travel to a new destination with a group by   taking a guided tour .

No matter what your situation is, being clear on who you’ll be traveling with or not can help you choose your next travel destination.

What kind of weather matches your travel style?

sunset in Puerto Rico over the ocean

Do you want to sightsee when it’s warm or work on your tan? Or do you prefer cooler temperatures for city travel or hope to see a perfect winter white landscape?

Obviously, your weather preference can help narrow down possible travel destinations based on the time of year you intend to travel. Weather conditions are what they are so if your next vacation falls in February and you don’t want to sightsee in Rome in chillier temperatures then it’s not the right time for you to visit.

On the flip side, if you’re hoping to ski and snowshoe in the Canadian Rockies, you’ll need to visit Banff in winter and not summer.

Banff in winter - Two Jack Lake ice skating

Keep in mind that if your travel dates fall during a destination’s peak season, it’ll likely come with higher prices compared to visiting at other times of the year. A slight compromise on weather and travel dates could also mean finding the best deals for that destination, like heading to the best places in Puglia in southern Italy in September instead of August.

Another upside to making some sacrifices when it comes to weather is fewer people. Everyone wants to visit a destination during peak season but going during shoulder season means you’ll be less affected by crowds. This and the hot weather are exactly why I prefer visiting Europe in the off-season when sightseeing is so much more enjoyable.

So, although it may seem like a basic question, the question of where to go when can be very informative.

What is your travel budget?

Hotel Room Florence Italy

Unfortunately, how to choose the right destination also comes down to money. You certainly don’t need to be rich to travel, but you also want to feel comfortable with the destination you choose and all it has to offer.

All destinations are not created equal when it comes to cost. If you’re on a tight budget, budget-friendly destinations will allow you to stretch your money much more than somewhere pricier.

Another place might come with an extra cost either because of a visa fee or a special permit needed to take part in specific activities. The same goes for the kind of trip to requires special gear. If these costs are too much right now, then perhaps it’s not the perfect travel destination right now either.

For international travel, don’t forget to look at the exchange rates. One that is not in your favor can cost you much more than you realized. Choosing your next travel destination could be as simple as going where your currency is strongest for the best value.

Where to Stay in Seville Spain Petit Palace Santa Cruz

You also need to be honest with yourself about your preferences when it comes to the seat class you fly in and where you like to stay. If you’re someone who absolutely needs more legroom when flying for more than a few hours, this cost has to be factored into your travel plans.

Hostels are a longstanding way to save money while traveling but if you’re not comfortable staying in one, then it could negatively impact your whole trip. On the other hand, paying for a hotel or vacation rental in an expensive destination might require sacrificing on activities and/or returning home stressed because you blew a hole in your travel budget.

The right travel destination allows you to be in your comfort zone when it comes to your travel style while sticking to as much money as you’ve allotted for this next trip.

And remember to think about any travel rewards you may have. A travel rewards credit card allows you to earn miles and points so that when you’re ready to take that next big trip, you can use them to book the trip or at least offset some of the cost.

A  financially savvy traveler  knows the answers to these questions and chooses a vacation destination accordingly.

What kind of journey or travel experience do you want?

Blyde RIver Canyon South Africa

With the above questions asked and answered, you’ve finished the practical first steps to choosing your next travel destination.

Now it’s time to connect what information you got from the questions above with the type of trip you’re imagining. This is when you work to align the practical with all that pent-up travel inspiration in the right side of your brain.

Start by asking yourself the purpose of your trip.

Is the perfect destination one where you can lounge and relax beside a beach? Or are you craving an outdoor adventure? Maybe you’re picturing a new travel destination with historical sites, cultural experiences, and foodie experiences.

If you’re like me, you probably would love all of the above. But the best option when choosing where to travel next depends on what you need at that moment.

If something in your life has left you feeling exhausted and stressed and all you can think of is going somewhere to relax and unwind, a beach destination or mountain retreat will likely be a better option than a sightseeing trip in Europe.

Maybe your norm is to always use your vacation time to go to a beach. So this time you’re looking for new destinations where you can see wildlife, like in Costa Rica , or explore historic ruins like those in Pompeii.

White faced Monkey Costa Rica Manuel Antonio

Beyond thinking about the type of trip you need, ask yourself what type of experience you’d like you and your possible travel companions to have.

Is there something you would like to gain from your travels? How do you want to remember this trip? Is there a lasting impact you’re hoping for?

If you want to take an adventure trip as a couple, it might be the right time to finally do that African safari or see the northern lights in Finnish Lapland .

Maybe you’re traveling with children and want the travel to be educational in some way. Consider, then, a place with fun and interesting sights, age-appropriate museums, and cultural experiences.

Understanding the type of journey or experience you want is the essence of choosing the right destination and making your trip a success. Too often, people are heard saying  “I need a vacation from my vacation.”   It doesn’t have to be this way if you focus on the important things you want and choose a travel destination based on this.

Travel can be so fulfilling if you take the time to plan a meaningful getaway that meets the needs, hopes, and wants of you and your travel companions.

But, the opposite is also true. When you choose your travel destination because it’s where you think you  should  take your kids or where  everyone else you know goes , your trip can end up feeling lackluster and, ultimately, not worth your time and money.

10 Tips to Choose Your Next Travel Destination

With the information you’ve focused on by going through the who, what, when, and why questions above, you’re surely closer to answering the biggest question of them all…where?

And while the final decision about where you should travel next is yours, these are some of the best things I’ve used or done to choose my next travel destination.

1. Get Inspiration from Pinterest, Social Media, and Hashtags.

Polignano a Mare Italy

“A picture is worth a thousand words” is so cliche, but also resonates with truth.

We are visual creatures in the same way my dogs relate to the world around them by using their keen sense of smell. Our brains are hardwired to process visuals quickly, which impacts how we feel, what we think, and even what we do.

Sometimes these visuals create a spark that sticks with us. It’s important to pay attention when this happens!

Visual platforms like Pinterest , Instagram , YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok attract 100s of millions of people who use them not only for entertainment and social connection but also to plan everything from home decor to travel destinations.

We’ve all seen photos of places that have grabbed us, causing an emotional, visceral reaction. These feelings can be a huge help when choosing your travel destination.

And if you’re not sure where to start on these platforms, just start typing on the search bar. Inevitably, other words will populate to give you some ideas. For example, you might type in “bucket list travel destinations” and the search bar might suggest you add “in Europe” to refine your search even further.

Hashtags can also be a great way to find inspiration. By searching #tropicalisland, you’ll find countless photos and videos to spark your wanderlust. You might even discover a new place that wasn’t on your radar.

ProTip: A word about popular destinations…Just because it’s popular doesn’t mean you have to go, too. If the destination doesn’t speak to you, it’s not your jam, at least right now. It doesn’t matter what social media says. And with so much attention focused on a handful of places, you can share your tourism dollars with a destination better suited to you and just equally as deserving as the latest must-go hotspot.

2. Read Travel Blogs.

Medina Azahara Cordoba Spain

Ok, you had to know this was coming! 😉

But, in all seriousness, there are a ton of travel blogs out there with a lot of inspiring, incredible content.

Find a few travel bloggers you like on social media? Take some time to explore their blog. The hidden gem blog posts are often discovered by those who take a few minutes and dig beyond just the most recent posts.

You just might discover a place like Husavik in Iceland or fall in love with Sibiu in Romania. Or you just might see a few photos of Cordoba in Spain and be instantly bit by the travel bug!

3. Go Old School with “Coffee Table” Travel Books

Sunset over the Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA. The Colorado River winds its way through the canyon it has created. This beautiful view can be seen from Navajo Point.

With everything digitalized or online these days, don’t underestimate the power of travel books.

I’m not necessarily talking about travel guides, but the ones with oversized, smooth pages and glossy colorful photos that fill your eyes and heart with wanderlust. They’re perfect for perusing whether you want to choose your travel destination or just float away into your travel dreams.

I love opening these books to random pages and seeing what I find. Sometimes I take a photo of a photo or keep the book open to a specific page for a couple of days just to see if a place feels like the right one for my next trip.

Here are a few of my favorite travel picture books.

Journeys of a Lifetime, Second Edition: 500 of the World's Greatest Trips

These books can excite a passion for traveling the world in just about anyone! The photos carry you into the scene, while the text about each place transports you to lush rainforests and medieval architecture.

These books are perfect for choosing experiences that match the journeys you imagine for yourself and others. You’ll go from Patagonia to the Canadian Rockies to the world’s best dive spots and the best National Parks in the U.S. If you’re like me, you’ll be packing your  backpack  as you stare wide-eyed at the list of places awaiting!

4. Follow the Deals.

things to do in old san juan

This tip for choosing a travel destination should not be overlooked! Not only might you discover amazing places, but it can also help you save (potentially) a lot of money.

Know you want to go to Japan someday and you just found a super cheap airfare to make it happen? Guess what? Someday has arrived. You may never have the chance again to book such a cheap ticket to Japan.

It’s also a great way to add flexibility (which always helps save money when traveling) when you can’t be flexible on your dates. Say, for example, if you’re a teacher or a family with kids who have to travel around the school calendar.

Maybe you’re just an open-minded, flexible person who’s just happy to travel anywhere. Perhaps you’re looking to get away for the least possible money!

Aside from Google Flights Explore, Momondo  is a great airfare website for choosing your travel destination and finding the best airfare. They have an explore anywhere feature that lets you choose destinations by continent, month, budget, and theme (beaches, cities, etc.)

Skyscanner  is another tool to search for the best prices on flights even when you don’t where you want to go. Type your home airport as the departure and “everywhere” as the destination. Skyscanner will show you the lowest-priced flights to a range of destinations.

The Hopper App can help you know whether or not to book a flight or wait for a better price.

You could also use airfare deal email newsletters like Matt’s Flights to get alerted to mistake fares and low fares in real-time without spending hours searching. The deals are timely, though, so you’ll need to book quickly before the price changes. For more tips about  how to find cheap flights , check out everything I do to find cheap flights.

5. Where Can Your Travel Rewards Points Take You?

Intrepid Travel Zimbabwe Victoria Falls

I am a confessed points and miles nerd. But, my studies have paid off because I’ve been to many great places that I never dreamed would be possible. If you’re interested in getting started with travel rewards, check out my free course.

Once you sign up for hotel and airline loyalty programs, you’ll get emails to learn about destinations with low airfares or hotel rates. Look for loyalty program award discounts to specific places or for particular hotels.

For instance,  hotel brands like  IHG and Hilton  offer promotions throughout the year discounting award night stays in specific destinations.

If you earn travel rewards points through a bank like Chase or American Express , watch for transfer bonuses that give you a percentage bonus (i.e. 30%) on the points you transfer to a specific airline or hotel.

You can also apply the same principles for finding deals as above. Go where the deals are.

Need to get to Paris but the award flight space is too expensive or nonexistent to Paris?

Look at surrounding airports and Voila…there’s plenty of affordable space to Brussels which is only an 80-minute train ride from Paris. Maybe you’ll even have a few extra days to spare to visit places like Bruges and Antwerp before heading to France.

6. Trust Your Gut.

overlooking Sibiu Romania

Saw an incredible photo or movie about a place you never knew much about and now you can’t get it out of your head?

Book it as your next trip!

Sometimes you just get a hunch or a feeling about a place. If you act on it, you might just end up on one of the most incredible and unforgettable trips ever.

I did exactly this when I decided to go to Romania and Malaysia because I saw a few photos and was instantly struck. Both trips were amazing and I learned a valuable lesson. Sometimes it really pays to not overthink things and just go. It may be cliche but the world really is an endlessly fascinating place!

7. Calibrate Current Events.

Palm trees blowing along the coast during a hurricane

No one wants to feel unsafe when they travel. And unfortunately, sometimes, world events make it unsafe to visit certain places at certain times.

It’s a good practice to check travel warnings issued by not only the United States but also by the governments in Canada, the U.K., and Australia. I find this gives a fuller picture of the actual scope of the alerts.

You should also remember what you see on TV and watch and read online isn’t always the reality in all places in that destination or region. Can you imagine visitors canceling their trips to New York City because New Orleans had a hurricane? Or forgoing a trip to Rome because Paris was having protests?

Use common sense. Invest in travel insurance . And, always do what makes you comfortable when deciding whether or not you should travel to a particular place.

8. Respect Your Capacity for Logistics.

Flatiron Building NYC

Planning a trip takes time and effort. You have to research, book transportation and accommodation options, as well as map out your day-to-day at least partially. The destination you choose dictates how intensive this process will be. So what can you manage right now?

It’s a lot easier to plan a beach getaway or a camping trip than it is a multi-city sightseeing trip. Both are equally worth it but one requires more research and planning.

Dreaming of an extended road trip through South America but don’t have the time right now to plan it the way it needs to be planned? Perhaps it’s better to go with something else right now. The same could be said for country-hopping through Europe.

Travel is supposed to be fun, exciting, and enjoyable and that includes the planning process. If you’re dreading the time needed to plan a trip to a particular place, go somewhere else instead for now.

9. Go on a Guided Tour.

Sahara Desert Camel Selfie Morocco

Or opt for a guided tour . It’s easy because all of the logistics are handled for you. Plus, oftentimes, you meet interesting people and visit places you might not have considered on your own.

I’ve taken tours with both Intrepid Travel and G Adventures and had a great time on each one. I’ve even made some long-lasting travel friends along the way!

So, if you’re not sure about traveling solo or just don’t want the hassle of planning, pick a tour and go!

10. Revisit Your Bucket List…and Just Go!

Safari Elephant

If you still aren’t sure about what to pick for your next trip, go back to your bucket list. You put places and experiences on there for a reason. At one point or another, taking that trip someday resonated. Trust that and go.

Frame it like this. It’s not analysis paralysis but rather a desire to visit so many places that it’s hard to choose one destination over another. I always take this as a sure sign that I can’t go wrong no matter where I choose.

So, How Do You Choose the Right Travel Destination?

Break down the process into smaller steps by using the questions, tips, and tools in this guide. They’ll help you choose your next travel destination by pointing you in the direction of where and what makes sense for you right now.

And remember, no one ever regrets traveling, but rather the trips they didn’t take. So, go ahead and plan your next trip!

Great tips! I also love Kayak Explore ( https://www.kayak.com/explore/ ). You choose your home airport, the time of year you want to travel, and (optionally) your budget/flight length, and it returns a map with flight options for you. It’s one of my favorite tools!

Thanks, Kelly! How could I forget Kayak’s explore, tool!? Thanks for the reminder and for adding to this guide with such a great tip!

Haha, I am definitely guilty of saying ‘I need a vacation from my vacation’. These are great pieces of advice, especially deciding what type of adventure you want, and who you’ll be with so that your expectations matches the reality!

Lol, Annie. I don’t think you’re alone on that one! It’s such a disappointment when you have one idea in mind and then the trip turns out not like you wanted.

I really use pinterest for visual searches. I love that you included that. My friends and I already peg the places we want and the moment there is a sale— we just go for it.

I love how you said, “we just go for it.” So awesome, Karla. You can plan forever, but in the end, you just have to take action! 🙂

Really nice I like that you added tools to go along with how to choose your travel destination! Pinterest is a great place to get information and what I like about it is getting a picture preview before you get to the website to peak interest instead of print list on google search 🙂

Thanks for reading. I so agree! The Pinterest visual is really great and so much more helpful than just a text link.

Great resources on deciding where to go! 80% of my travels are booked after I see special offers on airlines as the cost of the ticket is a major factor.

Flexibility is key to being a successful traveler, right Chrysoula?! So, following the deals is smart.

I love the follow the deal method. I tend to pick wherever has a cheap flight for my three day weekend adventures. I just book the trip and figure out the rest later.

Thanks for sharing, Jennifer. It’s always great to get a good deal! Good for you for being so open and flexible.

Great post! I abide by most of these tips myself! I’d say I usually pick where to go based on three things: length of visit (I’m not going to plan a trip to Australia with only 3 days) who I’m going with (is my boyfriend coming along? Maybe I’ll go somewhere that is more iffy for solo travelers) and the weather (I don’t want to go anywhere during monsoon season)!.

And of course, blogs, Pinterest and Instagram are where I get much of my inspiration!

Thanks for reading, Erika. I do the same and I always have to think differently when I travel solo versus with my husband. (Shh..I can be more adventurous without him! lol)

These are all very practical things to think of and helpful advices! Some things didn’t work out as planned but it happens, least we could do is try and prevent them 🙂 I’ll check against this list the next time I plan to go!

It’s good to know more about finding a vacation destination and hotel. I like how you said that it depends on if we’re traveling with our kids. This summer we plan on taking our two kids with us, so we’ll have to find a destination and a hotel that will work for two rowdy children!

I loved the tip that you gave to consider following deals while you are looking for a place to visit. Thanks for these tips! I like that you mentioned we should think about what sort of experiences we want to gain from the trip so that it helps us in determining the perfect holiday destination. I like your tip about reading travel blogs to help decide where to vacation since they may have some hidden gems you didn’t know about. My husband and I have been looking for somewhere to go to celebrate our one year anniversary. Thanks for reading, Charlotte. Hope you have a great anniversary trip.

13 Ways to Pick Your Next Travel Destination

Nomad lifestyle.

my next travel

How I pick my next travel destination is probably the TOP question I get asked. And honestly, I sort of just spin the globe and pick a place. Ok fine, there IS a little bit of planning involved depending on where I already am and what season it is. But the best way to pick your next travel destination is to simply ask yourself, well– What’s on your bucket list? Where are you DYING to go?

Knowing there’s a whole wide world out there of uncharted territory while your wanderlust is screaming through the roof can make it hard to choose. So let me help you with narrowing down the 195 countries available to you.

1. Where do you feel most inspired?

I’m the type of gal that likes to do it all. From sightseeing in Paris to hiking in New Zealand, they are two very different types of travel experiences, but I love them both the same. If you were to close your eyes and imagine yourself somewhere else where would you be? What would you be doing? Something adventurous? Escaping to the countryside? How about a road trip through Portugal?

Think about your energy, and where you’ll feel most inspired. Maybe what you’re looking for is to be in the midst of the hustle and bustle in the city. Maybe you just want to sit pretty and watch the sunset fall beneath the ocean every night. Understanding what kind of mood you’re in and what you’ve been longing for will help you narrow down where to go next.

The key is to have balance. I go between busy cities to escape into nature quite frequently. The best part about traveling is that you really can have it all. While Paris does sound appealing, know that you can always take a day trip to the countryside. That’s the beauty of this world, mostly everything you’re looking for is right around the corner. Just follow your heart to know what travel destination it needs.

Next Travel Destination

2. What climate do you want to be in?

Tropics? Desert? Alpines? This will help you narrow it down profoundly. If you’re someone that likes it hot hot hot, heading closest to the equator will probably be the move. If you’re looking for sweater weather, beautiful mountain tops, and the possibility to ski, then away from the equator you go.

Most digital nomads, or really any traveler of sorts is typically looking to escape the cold. From November through March, heading to South America, South Africa, and Southeast Asia is where you’ll find blue skies and warm temperatures.

But if you’re someone that is suited better in cooler weather, the nordic countries and northern Europe may be the place for you. Even come winter you can find digital nomads skiing the Alps, hiking in Norway, and in and around Poland.

3. What time zone suits you best?

If you’re a remote 9-5er that needs to “clock in” during your company’s structured hours, then sticking to an easy and adjustable time zone is a must. Surely if you’re working out of an East Coast office, you don’t want to be working until 3am in Thailand and Bali. Stick to places down in South America such as Medellin, Bolivia, Buenos Aires, and Rio de Janeiro where the time difference is only off a couple hours. South Africa, the Middle East, and Europe are also doable; you’ll just be working until bedtime (around 10-11pm).

If you’re an entrepreneur or freelancer and can make your own hours, then you have more options worldwide as to where you can go. Just be sure that if your clients are generally back home in the states that you overlap your work day with some of theirs. You want to be available for calls when your client needs you, collaborate with other team members, and have it fit around your best productivity levels.

4. What’s your budget?

One of the biggest advantages of being location independent is that so you can make a bigger income and stay in a cheaper area. If you can make a competitive US salary and stay somewhere that’s only $300 a month, well then– you’ve hit the jackpot.

Depending on your profession and where you are in your nomad journey: just starting out, working part time, or own a business, it should all be taken into consideration. You generally want to feel comfortable and not live beyond your means. So come up with an amount you’re willing to pay per month and year. Note that because of this, your monthly budgeting is going to fluctuate with each new travel destination.

As a rule of thumb, you want to pay less than you would be paying at home. If you’re an American coming from a New York City apartment, then this will be easy. Nomads typically try and spend no more than $30/night on lodging, which is $900/month. You can find some hostels as low as $12/night and airbnbs (if you’re splitting it with friends) for $14/night.

It’s important to not let your monthly budget make or break your trip planning. You’ll find that some countries cost a little more to live in, and others cost a little less. Just remember that over the course of the year rent will go up and rent will go down. The overall average of what you spent over the year is what’s important. Pinch your pennies some months, and live like a queen in others.

Choosing a Travel Destination

5. Have any diet restrictions?

If you’re an american than you’re pretty used to having every type of cuisine at your fingertips. This isn’t always the case abroad, and depending on your diet, you could be very restricted. Now, for me, a lover of all food, I have no issues in this category. However, traveling with vegetarians, pescatarians, vegans, or even just picky eaters, I’ve realized that it can be a real issue.

One way to solve this is by downloading the app Happy Cow . It shows you the best vegetarian and vegan places around the world, and a lifesaver. I’m not a vegetarian, but after traveling through Bosnia and Germany where the cuisine is mostly meat and potatoes, a girl wants to get in her veggies every once in a while!

If you’re someone that doesn’t typically like asian food, then you probably want to stay away from Southeast Asia. If hummus, tahini, and falafel aren’t really your thing, then I’d also skip Greece and surrounding areas. You know you best, so just do your diligence in researching ahead of time. Having a true authentic meal around the world, is one of the best perks of traveling!

6. Pick a travel destination based on shoulder or off season

This will help bring your price points down, escape crowds of tourists, as well as more lodging options become available to you. By traveling during the off season you’ll also help the county’s economy since most solely rely on tourism. Depending on what climate, experience, and time frame you’re searching for, you’ll be able to gauge when it’s the best time to go.

For instance, keep in mind that if you’re escaping winter, a lot of countries’ “winter” months consist of heavy rain. Don’t let this be a turn off to you. It will actually keep your FOMO down and your work ethic up! Sure, if you were going on a two week honeymoon you probably don’t want a couple hours of daily rain to hit while you’re on your wine tour. As a digital nomad, though, you have all the time in the world to explore. The rain shouldn’t keep you away.

With european cities it’s much more enjoyable to travel during the off season. Less heat, less tourists, less pick-pocketing, and less people trying to take advantage of their prices. I have no one-stop-shop website to figure this out. I honestly just google: best places to go in “month” and see what results I get.

7. Pick a continent

It’s easiest to pick a continent and run with it. This is going to be better on your wallet and you’ll have the opportunity to explore the surrounding areas. Central America? South America? Europe? South Africa? Southeast Asia? Based on weather, budget, and city (or non city) preference this is the perfect way to narrow down your options.

There are also lots of nomad communities in each continent that you can kick off your journey with. Wifi tribe has “chapters” which means they spend a whole month in one place and ensure housing, wifi, and excursions all inclusive for you for one price. Selina and Outsite have locations all over the world where you can be safely housed with a room, internet, and friends as well. Browsing these websites can help you find a travel destination that fits your needs. Plus, this is a great way to start your journey, get some work done, meet some friends, and then continue to keep exploring afterwards.

Always check out the surrounding areas. This is where I open the map and just look around. Where can you easily take a train or bus? Of course, this is easier said than done in some places. Europe is much easier to travel country-to-country than South America. But this is the best way to fuel your wanderlust, and create a balance between living time in both a city and countryside.

8. Festivals, Events, & Activities

A great way to narrow down your travel destination, is to check out what activities and events are going on! Oktoberfest in Munich? Carnival in Venice? Sky Lantern Festival in Taiwan? New Years Eve in Rio de Janeiro? Sure it may be a little busy during that time, but an amazing way to see a country is diving head first into their festivals and parties they have going on. Here’s a full guide of annual festivals around the world.

Maybe you’re having an itch to visit a vineyard in Austria, a safari off of Cape Town, or see the cherry blossoms in Japan. OR maybe you’re not quite sure what you’re in the mood for and that’s perfectly ok too! That’s the whole point of exploring new destinations. Lonely Planet does a good job by organizing travel inspiration by categories: adventure, romance, budget, foodie, beaches, road trips, and art and culture. If you’re wondering how COVID-19 is affecting travel, they have a section with some great articles here. See #13 for more insight on this topic.

When you finally land on your next travel destination, do yourself a favor and get a guide book of that country. Lonely Planet offers the best guides on the planet, (no pun). They’re also offered for tablets so you don’t have to worry about carrying a book around with you. These are especially great for road trips, as a matter of fact, they are a MUST for road trips. Lonely Planet will let you know the best places to stop, eat, sleep and so much more.

9. Flight search to everywhere

Skyscanner is the ONLY place I look for flights. Honestly, when I’m starting to feel that bug, as if I’m about to ask Siri a question, I ask skyscanner where my next destination is going to be.

If you already have a couple destinations in mind and your dates are flexible (which they should be if you’re a nomad!), then do a search to your next travel destination for a WHOLE MONTH. Skyscanner will let you know what day is the cheapest to fly, and the results will shock you. Like my direct one day ticket to Paris for $124 I scored last March, INSANE!

If you’re looking for inspiration for your next travel destination, then search for EVERYWHERE. Skyscanner is the only platform that has this option and it’s genius. Just type in your local airport (or even the entire country). Once you click “to” a dropdown will pop up and ask if you’d like to search “everywhere”. Skyscanner will give you a long list of destinations to go to starting with the lowest prices on top. Be sure to check non-stop flights only, and “whole month” to get the most seamless and affordable flight possible.

10. Connectivity

Now out of these 195 countries in the world, not all of them are going to have up to par wifi, or coffee shops to work at. Some very remote areas won’t have anything faster than 3G. This can be very painful, so just do your research ahead of time, or decide this travel destination is better for a vacation.

When booking accommodation be sure to ask the host to check the internet for you. Just send them a note letting them know you’ll be there for work and a strong wifi connection is extremely important. Speedtest.net will do all the heavy lifting for you. Send them that website and ask them to send a screenshot back with the results. Then, you’ll know exactly what you’re dealing with.

If you’re traveling outside the United States the best thing you can do is buy a SIM card overseas. The cost will vary depending on the continent and city but a typical SIM card in Bali for example will cost 250k IDR ($17.00) a month for 30GB. Now that’s a lot of data, and you can hotspot directly off your phone (including your friends). There are much smaller plans and you can only pay monthly so the key is remembering what day your data will shut off.

Your other option is traveling with a mobile hotspot. Skyroam offers global wifi in over 130 countries where you can buy the GB, daily, or monthly AND share on 10 devices. What a great way to make 9 new friends– offer up a secure connection! I will say in full disclosure is that Skyroam is widely available where T*Mobile is, and depending on country, satellite, and cost of SIM card, it’s hard to say which is the better option. But it’s safe to say I use both. Skyroam is perfect for camping or van life in the U.S. where hot-spotting off your mobile device isn’t available.

11. Apartment? Cottage? Villa? You decide

Once I’ve narrowed it down to one or a few different destinations, I then start to explore the different lodging options in the area. I also ask myself if I’m looking to have a work-cation, meet travelers, or go it alone.

Hostelworld

Hostelworld , like its name, has every hostel in the world covered. This is especially helpful when I’m not looking to book a hostel, but know where they’re located so I can stop in and look at their tours. If you’re looking to make some friends and keep the price point down, then this is the best option. Don’t let the words “hostel” turn you off either, there are some insanely gorgeous hostels out there!

If you’re looking for a home away from home, then Airbnb is your go-to. It has a great filtering system, so you can really narrow down your search to neighborhood, price point, and more than likely listings offer weekly discounts. I always search for at least two weeks, and an exact two weeks (usually Friday to Friday) so I can see what weekly discounts hosts are offering, and save them to a wishlist to come back to later.

Booking.com

Booking.com offers thousands of hotel options, and you can search through all sorts of lodging categories such as apartments , resorts , villas , B&Bs , cabins, cottages, glamping and more. Let’s just say you can really get into a rabbit hole here. But if you’re looking to luxuriate with a work-cation and a view, or get back to nature and stay in a cabin, booking.com it is!

With each property you look at, be sure to read reviews, their check in and out times, and if they’re able to hold luggage for you. Now that you’ve probably opened 30 new tabs and your head is spinning with options, make a pin board so they’re all in one place. THAT will make it much much easier for you to narrow down your options when you’re ready to book. You’ve already done all the research, so be sure to save it!

12. Check travel advisories

I was hesitant to add this, as I don’t want to deter you from some of the most amazing places in the world, but it’s always a good idea to check in with the government’s travel advisories . The government rates each country with a level. Level 1: good to go, level 2: be precautious, level 3: reconsider, and level 4: do not travel.

I have almost reconsidered traveling to Turkey because of this exact thing (which was at a level 3 at the time), and went anyway. While my friend and I we’re really torn about what to do, we ran into friends from the UK and advised us to always check England’s point of view against the United States. It’s safe to say that we traveled to Cappadocia and couldn’t have felt more secure.

No matter where you are in the world, the United States included, always take regular safety precautions. Terrorism, mass shootings, sex trafficking, and pick-pocketing are everywhere. And I mean EVERYWHERE. Not to speak badly of the U.S., but the more I travel the more I find out that foreigners are actually afraid to come to the United States, and I honestly don’t blame them. Pickpockets are on the rise in major cities such as San Francisco, Chicago, and  New York City*, and Nashville is dealing with a huge human trafficking issue*

So before you get deterred from traveling to somewhere new, learning about their travel advisory, and other media on the internet, just beware that this world is not perfect and there are incidences everywhere.

13. Lastly, due to COVID-19 we have to take extra measures traveling

Like I mentioned earlier, Lonely Planet does a good job with an entire section on what to expect with the world pandemic. The best source I’ve found so far is this: ____has every country listed and is updated regularly with the most up to date information. We know that this won’t last forever and borders have already opened, but of course keep a close eye on the latest updates with what’s happening in the next travel destination you’re trying to go to. You may find you want to get a nice and spacious Airbnb or hotel room to cause you’ll be doing less touring and spending more time working at home. This is a great opportunity to get some really good deals on lodging, and on flights. Every country is going to face record lows of tourism and already offering less to nothing flight deals. Check out Kong Pham’s video on why and how he’s booking flights during a world pandemic . Since travel is more limited now is the perfect time to research the next destinations you want to go to, build up your bucket list, and if you don’t have a remote job yet, now is the perfect time to find one, or kickstart your freelancing business!

That’s it! That’s the exact process I go through every time I pick a new travel destination, or 3-4 month “chapter” as I like to call them. Remember it’s ok to take your time here and there’s no rush in booking. It can be nerve racking picking somewhere new and unknown but that’s also the fun in it. Some places you’ll love, and some you won’t be too fond of, so always stay flexible, and keep an open mind. Hope these tips were helpful, and be sure to let me know where you’re headed next!

Do I Need A Travel Visa For My Next Trip?

T here’s nothing like heading off to parts unknown — especially if it requires a passport and earns you more stamps . Traveling is how people learn about themselves, gain new experiences, and sometimes even make new friends that they might have otherwise never met. But while your mind might already be thinking about all the new Instagram and TikTok posts you can make based off of your travels, don’t forget about one important thing: Do I need a travel visa for my trip?

These days, you’ll often need more than just your passport to legally enter another country . Regulations vary widely from country to country. And the last thing you want is to be denied to even check-in for an upcoming flight because you lack the proper clearances. For most people, this means you need the right visa. So, getting a better understanding of entry requirements before you book a trip can help you make the right choice about where to travel, and what you need to do to clear immigration.

What Is a Travel Visa?

It’s understandable that many people aren’t familiar with visas. After all, don’t you just need a valid passport to shift from one country to another? Well, the reality is that virtually every country in the world has a visa requirement to legally enter their borders. But what makes it confusing is that there’s something also known as visa-free entry . But first, what is a visa?

A visa is an official document that allows an international passenger to legally enter another country. There are a wide array of visas from education, to work, and of course—travel. In most cases, a travel visa (sometimes also referred to as a tourism visa) is designed for short-term visits that limit the consecutive number of days that an international traveler can legally reside in the country before they must return to their country of residence. Time frames can vary widely depending on the country, but the average is usually anywhere from 30 to 90 days. Also note that travel visas usually forbid you from working and earning wages while in a host country.

Travel visas will often cover tourism and short-term business trips — however, there are exceptions. Most tourist visas cover a variety of activities including independent vacation travel to guided trips, and even attending professional conventions or conferences, as well as coordinating an independent business trip made solely of pre-arranged meetings with businesses headquartered in the destination country.

Who Needs a Travel Visa?

In most cases, you’ll always need a travel visa to visit another country. However, the amount of effort required to get it will ultimately depend on the country you intend to visit. Many countries participate in a program casually referred to as “visa-free entry.” Meanwhile, others require potential visitors to apply for a visa — even as a tourist.

The Visa Waiver Program

The Visa Waiver Program (VWP) is a program that began in 1986 and allows citizens and nationals of participating countries to legally enter any of the countries within the agreement without requiring an official visa. All that is needed is a valid passport. For entry to the United States, this allows citizens of 40 different countries to legally enter for up to 90 days. Usually, those participating countries will also allow U.S. citizens to enter their borders without requiring an additional visa for the same time frame.

However, there’s a caveat to VWP. While you don’t officially need a dedicated travel visa to enter the 40 countries in alliance with the U.S., some countries may still require that you pre-register your trip and receive clearance before boarding your flight.

For example, while South Korea is one of the 40 VWP countries , the nation initiated a pre-authorization system in 2022 known as Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) that required foreign travelers to pre-register their travel plans with the Korea Immigration Service. Note this is temporarily suspended for 22 member countries (including the U.S.) between April 1, 2023 and April 1, 2024 as part of a larger international tourism promotion.

How to Obtain a Travel Visa

Every country has a specific process for obtaining a travel visa. So, your first step should be visiting that nation’s official immigration website to understand what’s needed. Also note that most countries charge a fee to receive a visa. This can be as little as a few bucks or several hundred dollars.

Timing Matters

Also note that some countries have set time frames for travelers to obtain a tourism visa before arriving. In other words, you can’t always wait until the last minute to secure a visa. So, before booking travel, always visit that country’s immigration department first to ensure that you’ll have enough time to submit the proper paperwork.

Proof of Return Travel

Countries want to know that if you’re traveling under a short-term visa, you have every intention of leaving their borders by the time your visa expires. The last thing you want to do is overstay a visa. This is a great way to get deported and in some scenarios, permanently banned from a country. In most cases, you’ll need to include proof of a return ticket, as well as possibly provide details of where you’re staying while in that country, and your travel purpose (business versus tourism). Also note that if you’re country hopping but using different airlines to travel between locations, you may need to show proof of your final return ticket at every airport.

Provide All Necessary Documents

Having a valid passport may not be enough to get you through immigration. Many countries require that you have anywhere from three to six months of validity on your passport to avoid expiration before your travel visa would potentially expire. Likewise, depending on whether you’re traveling as a tourist or as a business tourist (i.e. visiting to attend a trade show), you might also need to provide proof of registration for that event.

Where Can I Travel with my U.S. Passport?

Regardless of what’s going on in the media, the U.S. passport is still one of the strongest travel documents in the world. Whether you formally need a visa or simply need to register your trip, much of the world is open to you. However, travelers frequently ask about travel visas for these top destinations. Also remember that this information is valid at the time of publishing. For the most up to date information, always check with a country’s formal immigration department.

Europe is a broad term as this is a continent full of multiple countries. This includes the United Kingdom as well as the European Union and other nations that are independent of the multinational legislative body. If your trip is to the United Kingdom, you don’t need a visa as long as you don’t exceed a six-month stay. For the EU, you currently don’t need a visa either for stays of up to 90 days — but take note.

In 2024 the EU is sunsetting visa-free entry for tourists. Starting early next year, U.S. citizens (as well as those from other countries) will need to pre-register their trip before arrival. This is part of the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) and will mimic the ETA (U.S., Australia and others), or K-ETA (South Korea) systems currently in place. It’s not formally a visa but simply requires that you give the EU a “heads up” that you plan to visit the region.

If you’re planning a trip down under and you’re also a U.S. citizen, you will need a travel visa. Only New Zealand citizens can apply upon arrival. All others must apply before arrival by using the ETA app or web page on the Department of Home Affairs website.

Qatar is another popular destination that rose in prominence thanks to FIFA. If you’re a U.S. citizen with a valid passport, you don’t need a visa and your passport is sufficient.

See the World with Peace of Mind

Traveling abroad doesn’t have to be a big process. Most countries try hard to make obtaining a visa or pre-authorization as seamless and low-stress as possible. In most cases, a common sense approach to travel planning is all that you need to successfully temporarily leave the U.S. and visit parts unknown. Avoid traveling on a one-way ticket as this will usually raise red flags. Give yourself enough time to successfully submit your travel details and corresponding documents. And finally, avoid traveling on a passport with less than six months of validity left.

Baltimore cruises to reroute after bridge collapse pauses port traffic

Carnival will move some operations to norfolk while baltimore recovers from key bridge collapse.

my next travel

Cruise lines are scrambling to make alternative plans and avoid the Port of Baltimore while officials suspend vessel traffic amid cleanup and rescue efforts around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.

Three major cruise lines sail from Baltimore, though no ships were in port Tuesday morning. The next cruise was scheduled to depart Sunday, but its operator confirmed late Tuesday afternoon that the voyage would instead head out from Norfolk.

Amira M. Hairston, a spokeswoman for the Baltimore port, said in an email that the status of the upcoming cruise ship schedule is not yet known.

“At this time we do not know how long vessel traffic will be suspended. As soon as that is determined we will provide an update. Until then please keep those involved in your prayers,” Hairston wrote.

Royal Caribbean International’s Vision of the Seas left Saturday for a 12-night southern Caribbean cruise with plans to return April 4. The cruise line said in a statement that it was “closely monitoring the situation, and our port logistics team is currently working on alternatives for Vision of the Seas’ ongoing and upcoming sailings.”

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and extend our heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” the company said. Royal Caribbean International will contact guests and travel partners once plans are final, the operator said.

Carnival Legend set off Sunday for a seven-day Bahamas cruise; the ship was scheduled to return March 31 and depart for its next sailing the same day. Instead of coming back to Baltimore, Carnival said late Tuesday, it will end its trip in Norfolk, and free buses will bring passengers back to Baltimore.

The ship’s next seven-day cruise will leave Norfolk and return to the port. In a news release , Carnival said it would temporarily move Baltimore operations to Norfolk “while Key Bridge rescue and cleanup efforts continue.”

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

Carnival Pride is supposed to start sailing from Baltimore next month, mostly to the Bahamas and eastern Caribbean.

Norwegian Cruise Line does not have cruises scheduled out of the port until later this year. American Cruise Lines, a U.S. river cruise operator, has Chesapeake Bay trips on small vessels scheduled from Baltimore starting in May. The cruise line said it will monitor developments “and make adjustments if needed.”

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) said it was “deeply saddened” by the bridge collapse and was closely following the situation. “Right now, the most important thing to do is to allow the emergency workers to do their work,” the group wrote in a statement.

This year, 12 ships are scheduled to make a total of 115 calls at the Port of Baltimore, the industry association said. With room for roughly 2,000 or 2,100 passengers at double occupancy, most Baltimore-based ships are much smaller than the record-breaking behemoths that sail from Florida ports.

“Any adjustments to current cruise activity at the port will be announced as soon as available by the individual cruise lines,” CLIA said in its statement.

A news release issued last month by Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s office said that more than 444,000 individuals cruised out of the Port of Baltimore last year, the most since 2012. The Maryland Port Administration said in a news release last year that the cruise industry generates nearly 400 jobs and $63 million in revenue every year for local businesses.

The port positions itself as a convenient option for cruising year-round, thanks to its location off Interstate 95 and plentiful parking. More than 40 million people live within a six-hour drive of the city, the port administration says.

Baltimore bridge collapse

Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship , sending at least eight people from a construction crew into the water. Two people were rescued and the remaining six are presumed dead, officials said. Follow live updates and see photos from the scene .

How it happened: The container ship lost power moments before colliding with the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds.

Victims: All six missing victims are presumed dead, the U.S. Coast Guard said, and the agency has ended rescue efforts. The entire crew aboard the 985-foot container ship Dali survived . First responders shut down most traffic on the four-lane bridge after the crew issued an urgent “mayday.” It saved lives, Moore said.

Economic impact: The collapse of the bridge, which severed ocean links to the Port of Baltimore, adds a fresh headache to already struggling global supply chains . See how the collapse will disrupt the supply of cars, coal and tofu .

History: The Key Bridge was built in the 1970s and spans the Patapsco River. Rebuilding the bridge over the Patapsco River will probably take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars, experts said.

How to travel around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore: A look at the traffic impact and alternate routes

By Rohan Mattu

Updated on: March 27, 2024 / 7:50 PM EDT / CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE -- The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday  led to a major traffic impact for the region and cut off a major artery into and out of the port city.

A bridge column was hit by a large container ship around 1:30 a.m., sending bridge workers and vehicles into the Patapsco River. A water search for six missing workers turned to a recovery effort Tuesday night.

Drivers are told to prepare for extra commuting time until further notice.

Locator map showing the typical traffic routes of cargo vessels passing beneath the bridge and the trajectory Dali followed prior to the allision.

Alternate routes after Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

Maryland transit authorities quickly put detours in place for those traveling through Dundalk or the Curtis Bay/Hawkins Point side of the bridge. The estimated 31,000 who travel the bridge every day will need to find a new route for the foreseeable future.

The outer loop I-695 closure shifted to exit 1/Quarantine Road (past the Curtis Creek Drawbridge) to allow for enhanced local traffic access.

The inner loop of I-695 remains closed at MD 157 (Peninsula Expressway). Additionally, the ramp from MD 157 to the inner loop of I-695 will be closed.

Alternate routes are I-95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or I-895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) for north/south routes.

Commercial vehicles carrying materials that are prohibited in the tunnel crossings, including recreation vehicles carrying propane, should plan on using I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between Essex and Glen Burnie. This will add significant driving time.

10.jpg

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The Key Bridge crosses the Patapsco River, a key waterway that along with the Port of Baltimore serves as a hub for East Coast shipping.

The bridge is the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore's Harbor and the final link in Interstate 695, known in the region as the Baltimore Beltway, which links Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

The bridge was built after the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel reached capacity and experienced heavy congestion almost daily, according to the MDTA.

Tractor-trailer inspections

Tractor-trailers that now have clearance to use the tunnels will need to be checked for hazardous materials, which are not permitted in tunnels, and that could further hold up traffic.

The MDTA says vehicles carrying bottled propane gas over 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using the Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) or the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895).

Any vehicles transporting hazardous materials should use the western section of I-695 around the tunnels, officials said.

A Total Solar Eclipse Is Coming. Here’s What You Need to Know.

These are answers to common questions about the April 8 eclipse, and we’re offering you a place to pose more of them.

  • Share full article

The sun flares at the edge of the moon during a total eclipse.

By Katrina Miller

On April 8, North America will experience its second total solar eclipse in seven years. The moon will glide over the surface of our sun, casting a shadow over a swath of Earth below. Along this path, the world will turn dark as night.

Skywatchers in Mexico will be the first to see the eclipse on the mainland. From there, the show will slide north, entering the United States through Texas, then proceeding northeast before concluding for most people off the coast of Canada.

Why eclipses happen is simple: the moon comes between us and the sun. But they are also complicated. So if you’ve forgotten all of your eclipse facts, tips and how-to’s since 2017, we’re here to explain it for you.

But before we dive in, there is one thing to know that is more important than anything else: It is never safe to look directly at the sun during an eclipse (except for the few moments when the moon has fully obscured its surface). At all other times, watch the event through protective eye equipment . Read on to learn about how to watch an eclipse safely.

What is a total solar eclipse?

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon orients itself between Earth and the sun, shielding the solar surface from our view.

In cosmic terms, it is unusual that this happens: the moon is about 400 times smaller than the sun, but it is about 400 times closer to us. That means that when these two celestial bodies are aligned, they appear to be the same size in the sky.

What other types of eclipses are there?

Annular solar eclipses occur when the moon is farther from Earth and appears too small to completely shield the sun’s surface. Instead, the outer part of the solar disk remains uncovered — a “ring of fire” in the sky.

Partial solar eclipses happen when Earth, the moon and the sun are imperfectly aligned. The moon only obscures a chunk of the sun. There will be two in 2025.

Earth can also get between the moon and the sun, creating a lunar eclipse. This can be observed once or twice a year .

How dark will it be during the eclipse?

In any given place along the eclipse path , the event will last around two hours or more.

The event will commence with a partial solar eclipse, as the moon takes a small bite out of the sun’s edge, then consumes more and more of its surface. According to NASA , this can last anywhere from 70 to 80 minutes.

The phase of the eclipse where the moon has completely blocked the sun’s surface is called totality. This is the only time the event can be viewed with the naked eye.

The length of totality varies by location. In April, some places will experience this phase for more than four minutes; others, for only one to two minutes.

During totality, the sky will get dark as night and the temperature will drop. Wispy white strings of light from the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, will suddenly be visible. Lucky viewers may even spot a thin, reddish-pink circle around the edge of the moon. That’s the chromosphere, an atmospheric layer below the sun’s corona. Its color comes from the presence of hydrogen throughout the layer.

After totality, the sun will slowly peek out from behind the moon again — another partial eclipse that will last the same amount of time as the first one. The moon will recede until the sun is back to normal brightness in our sky.

How can I watch the solar eclipse safely?

In general, avoid looking directly at the sun without special equipment to protect your eyes. Inexpensive options for watching the eclipse include paper solar viewers and glasses. If you are using equipment purchased for a past solar eclipse, make sure to inspect it. Toss anything with scratches or other signs of damage.

According to NASA , it is not safe to look at the sun through any optical device while using paper glasses or viewers. To watch the eclipse through cameras, binoculars or telescopes, buy a special solar filter.

The only time you can view a solar eclipse with the naked eye is during the moments of totality. Once the moon begins to reveal the surface of the sun again, return to watching the event through protective equipment to avoid injury.

What happens if I look at the eclipse without protection?

In general, staring directly at the sun, even for a few seconds, can cause permanent damage to your eyes . This can range from blurry or distorted vision to something even more serious, like blind spots. Because there are no pain receptors in the retina, you won’t feel it while it’s happening.

The same is true during an eclipse — except during the brief moments of totality, when the moon has hidden the face of the sun. At all other times, use protective eye equipment to view the event.

What do I do if I can’t find eclipse glasses?

If it’s too late to get glasses or viewers, there’s always a do-it-yourself option: a pinhole camera to indirectly experience the eclipse. You can create one using cardstock , a cardboard box , a kitchen strainer or even your fingers . These designs project an image of the eclipse onto the ground or some other surface that is safe to look at.

Where are the best places to watch the eclipse?

The total eclipse will sweep across large portions of Mexico, the United States and eastern Canada. For the most dramatic show, it’s best to experience the eclipse along the path of totality , which is where the moon will completely blot out the sun.

The Path of the Eclipse

On April 8, a total solar eclipse will cross North America from Mazatlán, Mexico, to the Newfoundland coast near Gander, Canada. Viewers outside the path of the total eclipse will see a partial eclipse, if the sky is clear .

Viewers near Mazatlán, a beach town on the Pacific shoreline of Mexico, will be the first place to experience totality on North America’s mainland. Various sites in Mexico along the eclipse’s path will experience the longest duration of totality — as long as four minutes and 29 seconds.

Cities across the United States, including Dallas, Indianapolis and Cleveland, will most likely be hot spots for the upcoming eclipse. Other notable locations include Carbondale, Ill., which also saw totality during the solar eclipse in 2017; small towns west of Austin, Texas, which are projected to have some of the best weather in the country along the eclipse path; and Niagara Falls, if the skies are clear. Six provinces of Canada are in the path of totality, but many of them have a very cloudy outlook.

When does the eclipse begin and end?

The show begins at dawn, thousands of miles southwest of the Pacific shore of Mexico. The moon starts to conceal the sun near Mazatlán at 9:51 a.m. local time. Viewers near Mazatlán will experience totality at 11:07 a.m. for four minutes and 20 seconds.

Then the moon’s shadow will swoop through Mexico, crossing over the Texas border at 1:10 p.m. Eastern time. Totality in the United States will start at 2:27 p.m. and end at 3:33 p.m. Eastern time.

Canadians will experience the solar eclipse in the afternoon for nearly three hours. The eclipse concludes beyond Canada’s boundaries when the sun sets over the Atlantic Ocean.

Video player loading

How long will the eclipse last?

The duration of totality depends on how far a given location on Earth is from the moon. Places with the longest totality are closest to the moon and farther from the sun. The speed of the lunar shadow is slowest over spots with the longest totality.

In April, the longest period of totality will occur over Durango, a state in Mexico, for a total of four minutes and 29 seconds. Along the centerline, the location of shortest totality on land is on the eastern coast of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada, for about two minutes and 54 seconds. But totality is even shorter along the edges of the total eclipse path; in some places, it lasts less than a minute.

How fast does the eclipse move?

Solar eclipses may seem to happen slowly, but the moon’s shadow is racing across the surface of Earth. Exact speeds vary by location. Eclipse calculators estimate the shadow will move between about 1,560 and 1,600 m.p.h. through Mexico, and more than 3,000 m.p.h. by the time it exits the United States. The eclipse will reach speeds exceeding 6,000 m.p.h. over the Atlantic Ocean.

When was the last total solar eclipse in the United States?

According to the American Astronomical Society , total solar eclipses happen once every year or so, but they can only be viewed along a narrow path on Earth’s surface. Many occur over water or other places that can be difficult to reach. A given location will experience totality once in about 400 years.

But some places get lucky: Carbondale, a college town in southern Illinois, saw the total solar eclipse in the United States on Aug. 21, 2017, and will experience another one this April. San Antonio experienced an annular eclipse last October, and is also in the path of totality for this year’s eclipse.

Do other planets experience solar eclipses?

Yes, any planet in our solar system with a moon can experience a solar eclipse. In February, a Martian rover captured Phobos , one of the red planet’s moons, transiting the sun.

The moons on other planets, though, appear either smaller or larger than the sun in the sky . Only Earth has a moon just the right size and at just the right distance to produce the unique effects of totality.

How will things on Earth change during the eclipse?

As the eclipse approaches its maximum phase, the air will get cooler, the sky will grow dimmer, shadows will sharpen and you might notice images of crescents — tiny projections of the eclipse — within them. Along the path of totality, the world will go dark while the moon inches toward perfect alignment with Earth and the sun.

Animals will also react to the solar eclipse. Bees stop buzzing , birds stop whistling and crickets begin chirping. Some pets may express confusion . Even plants are affected, scientists found after the solar eclipse in 2017 . They have diminished rates of photosynthesis and water loss similar to, though not as extreme as, what happens at night.

What if I can’t get to the path of totality?

Viewers in locations away from the eclipse path will see the moon partially blot out the sun, though how perceptible the effects are depends on the site’s distance from the centerline. (The closer you are, the more remarkable it will be.) Still, it won’t be quite like experiencing the eclipse during totality.

Remember that you should always wear protective eye equipment while watching a partial eclipse.

If you can’t make it to the path of totality but still want to experience it, many organizations are providing live video streams of the eclipse, including NASA and Time and Date . The Exploratorium, a museum in San Francisco, will also offer a sonification of the eclipse and a broadcast in Spanish.

What have we learned from solar eclipses?

In the 1800s, a French astronomer discovered the element helium by studying the spectrum of sunlight emitted during an eclipse. These events also allowed the first scientific observations of coronal mass ejections — violent expulsions of plasma from the sun’s corona — which can cause power outages and communication disruptions on Earth. Scientists also confirmed Einstein’s theory of general relativity, which says that massive objects bend the fabric of space-time, during a solar eclipse in 1919.

And there is more to discover. This April, NASA plans to fly instruments on planes to capture images of the solar corona, and launch rockets to study how the drop in sunlight during an eclipse affects Earth’s atmosphere. A radio telescope in California will try to use the moon as a shield to measure emissions from individual sunspots .

The public is joining the fun, too. During the eclipse, a team of ham radio operators will beam signals across the country to study how solar disturbances can affect communications. Some people along the path of totality will record sounds from wildlife . Others will use their phones to snap pictures of the eclipse to help sketch out the shape of the solar disk .

An earlier version of this article referred imprecisely to eclipse on other worlds. Some appear larger than the sun in sky, they are not all partial eclipses.

What travelers should know about FAA advisory on total solar eclipse before April 8

my next travel

The total solar eclipse is nearing, so the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is offering guidance to commercial planes and private aircraft ahead of the phenomenon .

The "Great North American Eclipse" will occur on April 8. During this cosmic event, the Moon will pass between the Earth and the Sun and travel " a narrow path of totality from southwest to northeast across thirteen U.S. states," the government agency said.

Millions of people will want to view it from the ground . But what about those who are airborne?

For many passengers, the impact should be limited to the types of delays associated with high-travel days.

"Due to the high volume of traffic along the eclipse path, (airport) arrivals can expect lengthy delays during peak traffic periods," the FAA said.

The eclipse will begin over the South Pacific Ocean and cross North America, passing over Mexico, the U.S. and Canada, according to the FAA. The eclipse's path will affect the U.S. from 2:30 p.m. EST to 3:40 p.m. EST, the agency said.

Airports in Texas, Vermont, Maine, Canada, New Hampshire, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky and Missouri will be primarily affected by the eclipse , the FAA said.

"The purpose of this notice is to inform airmen of the possible impacts to air traffic and airports along the eclipse path during the period April 7, 2024, (6 a.m. EST) through April 10, 2024, (midnight EST)," the FAA said.

When is the 2024 total solar eclipse? Your guide to glasses, forecast, where to watch.

What the FAA is saying about aircraft ahead of the eclipse

In preparation for the eclipse, aircraft should be ready for potential airborne holding (circling in the air to delay landing), rerouting and FAA-indicated take-off times for all domestic arrivals and departures that abide by instrument flight rules, according to the agency.

Traffic management initiatives , including alternative routing, parking guidance strategies and the slowing down and speeding up of air traffic could be implemented during the total eclipse, according to the FAA.

"There may be a higher traffic volume than normal anticipated at airports along the path of the eclipse," the government agency said. "Traffic should anticipate delays during peak traffic periods."

Parking for aircraft could be limited, particularly at the smaller and uncontrolled airports, the FAA said. Departures could be a challenge for certain aircraft depending on their level of clearance, the agency said.

Remember the 2017 total solar eclipse? Here's why the 2024 event will be bigger and better.

Pilots could find some restrictions at airports on April 8, FAA says

Pilot training operations at airports will be "extremely limited" and "possibly prohibited" as the eclipse passes, according to the FAA.

Pilots are advised to "carefully" check the Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs), a notice to help prepare for changes in procedure and service and against hazards, the FAA said.

"Specific NOTAM procedures may be revised, and arrivals to some airports possibly restricted so please review NOTAMs frequently to verify you have the current information," according to the agency.

Special security provisions may be in effect during the eclipse, including temporary flight restrictions (TFRs), two-way radio communications and discrete transponder requirements , the FAA said.

TFRs are normally announced through NOTAM about three to five days before the event, the agency said.

My wife and I relied on our credit card insurance policies when travelling to the Middle East and North Africa to visit our family. However, a family friend told us he is struggling to recover a big medical bill against his policy for seemingly spurious reasons. How can I make sure we’re fully covered?

Headshot of Bilal Mirza, commercial litigation partner at JMW Solicitors

Bilal Mirza, commercial litigation partner in the London office of law firm JMW Solicitors, says whenever you travel it is vital to have appropriate and adequate travel insurance. You can buy travel insurance from insurance companies, banks, travel agents, supermarkets, holiday companies and online comparison websites.

Often, travel insurance is included either as an extra benefit or service through your bank or credit card company as part of a package of services for which you pay a monthly or annual fee. Before you travel, always check to see how much you are paying or at least the value of the travel insurance element of the package and what you are covered for.

You may find cover is limited only to you or your spouse as account holders and does not extend to the wider family travelling with you. Some policies may include your children but have a condition that they are in full-time education and travelling with you as part of your group trip.

You will need to check whether there are upper age restrictions and if extreme sports activities, such as rock climbing, rafting or even bike hire, are covered. This is particularly important if you are participating in winter sports such as skiing, as some policies exclude these or limit cover to on piste skiing and won’t cover you if you venture off piste.

If you intend to do these types of activities you may be better off buying specific travel insurance for your trip.

Some policies also apply special conditions relating to health and medical conditions to travellers over the age of 65. You must disclose to your insurer any pre-existing medical condition and you may have to complete a medical questionnaire. This does not always result in a higher premium but insurers like to know of any additional risks. There are specialist travel policies in the market aimed at those above the age of 65 which may give you better cover and may not charge you more for it.

As a minimum, your travel policy should include cover for medical expenses, repatriation home from abroad If you are injured or ill, accident and injury abroad, damaged items, lost or delayed baggage and cover for cancellation or missed departures. The cheapest policy does not always offer the best value and always carefully consider your specific trip and what you need your travel policy to cover.

Finally, if you are a UK resident you can apply for a free UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) via the NHS website. This does not replace the need for proper travel insurance but allows you to obtain healthcare in EU countries at a reduced cost.

Why can’t my mother access pension cash?

My dad took out several pensions written under trust in which he was the only trustee and my mother was the beneficiary. Since he died, all have paid the money to my mother, bar one from Standard Life. It says we must first appoint a new trustee to pay the money to a beneficiary. In other words, my mother has to appoint herself as trustee to pay herself as a beneficiary. The company says that paying a beneficiary directly would mean bypassing the trustee. But there is no trustee because my dad is no longer here. Why can’t an executor instruct payment to a beneficiary when someone dies?

Headshot of Carrie Duncan, probate partner at Withersworldwide

Carrie Duncan, probate partner at Withersworldwide law firm, says this issue arises because the trusts your father created with Standard Life and the other companies are distinct entities from the estate which passes under the terms of your father’s will. Your father’s executors are responsible for administering his will and the trustees appointed in respect of the Standard Life trust are responsible for administering it.

If there had been more than one trustee of the Standard Life trust, then on your father’s death, it would usually have been up to the surviving trustee to deal with the payment of the death benefit to the beneficiary of the trust. It is quite possible that the surviving trustee could have been someone other than the executor of your father’s will. It is also quite possible that the beneficiary could have been a different person from the trustee or the executor.

Our next question

I was recently fined by HM Revenue & Customs as result of my accountant preparing inaccurate tax returns for me.  I have had to pay substantial additional tax as well as significant amounts to cover late payment interest and charges. Do I have a claim against my accountant and what would I need to do to bring a claim? Does it matter that the tax returns were filed many years ago, but HMRC has only alerted me to this issue now?

Of course, in the circumstances you describe, your father was the sole trustee. In this scenario, unless the trust document says otherwise, there is provision within trust legislation for the personal representatives of a sole or last surviving trustee to appoint a replacement trustee to act as a trustee in place of the deceased trustee. It would seem that this is what Standard Life is asking your mother to do — wearing her executor hat to appoint herself as a replacement trustee. Then, as a trustee, paying the money to herself as a beneficiary.

I appreciate that this starts to feel like a nonsense when all the different hats are worn by the same person. However, it should be noted that there is also provision within trust legislation which says that until new trustees are appointed, your mother — as executor of the sole trustee — is capable of exercising or performing any power or trust which your father, as trustee, would have been able to. This may well have been the basis upon which the other providers paid the benefits to your mother.

The terms of the particular trust deed should be reviewed to see whether there is anything else preventing Standard Life paying out the money, but it is probably worth reminding them of this statutory provision in case it is helpful in your case.
