Switzerland tours by region.

Breathe in crisp mountain air from the rooftop of Europe. Switzerland tours are unforgettable for many reasons, being especially known for experiences in an environment that you can’t get anywhere else.

Here’s a summary of some noteworthy places you will want to add to your list when browsing our Switzerland tours.

Swiss Alps & Zurich

From the Matterhorn to Stanserhorn, the magnificent Swiss Alps cover 60 percent of the country. A scenic Switzerland tour will take you to Zurich, the world’s capital of banking, on the Limmat River, where you’ll walk the colorful street, Augustinergass and see carved windows of medieval merchant houses.

Lake Geneva

Visit the headquarters of the United Nations in Geneva or the home of the International Red Cross. Chillon Castle began as a Roman outpost on the other side of Lake Geneva and later belonged to Swiss nobility.

The mountain resort town St. Moritz beckons with its chic boutiques and cable cars.

Visit Ticino, where Italian is the official language, and stroll along the gentle shores of the Swiss side of Lake Maggiore. Take a delightful short on the lake boat trip while enjoying a Ticino tour to see the gorgeous Isola Bella, famous for its gardens and stunning white peacocks.

Central Switzerland & Lucerne

Central Switzerland is a great place to start your Switzerland vacation, as you can easily get to Lucerne from Zurich. Travelers on Central Switzerland tours want to explore this quaint town, see the melancholic Lion Monument, cross the covered Chapel Bridge, and take a walk nearby Pilatus. If you're looking for a snowy wonderland vacation, travelers love to take Switzerland tours in the winter to experience the magic of Lucerne's Christmas market .

Valais & Zermatt

Board the Glacier Express and continue your Swiss vacation to Zermatt, a southern resort town famous for its skiing and rock-climbing opportunities. Zermatt in the summertime offers many leisure possibilities: try swimming, hiking, or spending a whole day relaxing in the fresh Alpine surroundings. Or take a ride on Europe’s highest cable car to the snow-capped roof of the world for a magnificent panorama of the highest peaks in Switzerland, Italy, and France.

Can't decide which cities and places in Switzerland you want to visit? Make it easier on yourself and start with the Best of Switzerland tour to help narrow your search.

Discover the 15th-century vineyards of Cave Champ de Clos

The Conne family have been producing wine for centuries in the heart of the UNESCO heritage region of Lavaux. Be hypnotized by rows of terraced vineyards then retire to the stone cellar to taste the vintages they have produced.

Take a horse carriage ride through the Alps and Rosegg Valley

The alps are home to an endlessly romantic trail that can be taken on horse carriage ride. Rug up in blankets for this fairytale experience through alpine forests, arriving at a destination of snow capped mountains and an impressive glacier. The kind of views imagined when dreaming up a Switzerland trip.

Ride up to Stans by Switzerland's oldest mountain railway

Start in Lucerne and travel along tracks from the 1890s, watching villages and views pass by in the window. With wildflower meadows in the summer and snow dusted trees in winter, you will unwind as you wind around the mountains for 30 minutes before reaching the top.

Travel to the heart of Switzerland, Interlaken

The unassuming town of Interlaken is the perfect base to connect with the soul of Switzerland. Explore over 700 hikes which roam into the mountains from your doorstep, with charming isolated villages found sitting between them.

Our top 5 things to do in Switzerland

We'll take you through the pristine natural beauty of this country, with a trip that's filled with moments of awe. Lakes, grapevines and alpine forests prove it's not just the hills that are alive in Switzerland.

Swiss National Museum

There is a reason this is Switzerland's most frequently visited museum of cultural history. Inside, you will immerse in the past and present through some 840,000 objects. From bronze Age bowls to silver knight’s armor, nowhere else will deliver such a rich and comprehensive insight into the Swiss.

Lake Geneva

Charlie Chaplin museum

The property where Charlie Chaplin spent his last years provides an intimate glimpse into the iconic entertainer's life and work. Be moved by a walk through the vast estate, where you will marvel at his original bowler hat and boots, hear tales from friends and touch painstakingly replicated movie sets.

Zentrum Paul Klee

The namesake of this museum is one of the 20th century's most important artists. Step into the space to quietly take in his artworks, you might find yourself lost in the famous cubism inspired 'Insula dulcamara' or colorful jigsaw that the German-Swiss genius was most famous for.

Best museums in Switzerland

There's more to this landlocked country than army knives and chocolate. With Trafalgar, you will gain a deeper understanding of Switzerland through these must-visit museums.

Once a farmers’ breakfast, Rösti is now a plate popular amongst the Swiss. One bite into this crisp baked potato and you will be hooked. Luckily, the country's many regions boast their own versions, offering an excuse to sample many during your tour of Switzerland.

There is more to this classic fare than dipping bread into a pot of melted cheese. It’s a sacred pastime. To the Swiss, fresh bread and bubbling creamy Gruyere is incomplete without one vital ingredient: good company. Indulge in authentic fondue in Switzerland in the company of new friends.

Swiss chocolate

Chocolate aficionados will find no shortage of pleasure in the smooth chocolate of Switzerland. The birthplace of Lindt, Toblerone, Mövenpick and more, a banquet of cocoa will be enjoyed here in the name of culture.

Best food in Switzerland

Baked potato, melted cheese and genuine chocolate. The culinary delights of Switzerland were designed with only the pleasure of taste in mind, and it's an indulgence Trafalgar is only too happy to share with you.

What to pack for Switzerland

People packing for a tour

Even in summer, layers are vital in Switzerland. Temperatures differ throughout through the country and can get particularly crisp in the higher mountains.

A good quality camera

In a place known for pinch me moments, it would be remiss to forget something more than just a smartphone to capture them all.

Swiss Francs

Switzerland may be at the core of Europe, but this country abandoned the Euro many years ago. Though you can still use them in some larger establishments, but it's better to arm yourself with plenty of Francs so you're never caught short.

A phrasebook

A phrasebook with the national languages of German, French and Italian is essential on a tour of Switzerland. If you really can’t spare the space, download them to your Google Translate app offline.

Walking shoes

If your trip is likely to see you traversing the dynamic landscapes of Switzerland, a pair of sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots should be on the packing list.

Day-by-day itinerary

switzerland tour package from berlin

Board your overnight flight to Zurich today.

Welcome to Switzerland—or, as they say in the local dialect, grüezi (“GROO-tsee”)! From the Zurich airport, transfer to your hotel in the Swiss Alps, where you’ll meet your Tour Director and the rest of your group. Unwind, then continue getting to know one another over a welcome dinner, served with beer or wine.

Set out into lakeside Lucerne, one of Switzerland’s most populated cities, for a guided sightseeing tour and enjoy a taste of Alpine life—complete with clear views of Pilatus, Rigi, and the rugged ridges of other neighboring mountains.

  • View the Lion Monument, a tribute to the Swiss Guards who sacrificed their lives in Paris during the French Revolution.
  • Pass the hand-painted facades that line the cobbled streets of the Old Town—the traditional core of the city that dates to medieval times.
  • Cross the famous Kapellbrücke (say it “ka-PELL-broo-kuh”), the covered wooden “chapel bridge” that spans the Reuss River, and view the adjacent Water Tower. Octagonal in shape and stone in build—with a complicated past as a sentinel’s post, state treasury, and prison—it predates the Kapellbrücke by roughly a century.
  • See the Jesuit Church, the first large Baroque building of its kind to be built north of the Alps in Switzerland.

If you’d like, add an afternoon journey to the top of Mount Pilatus and explore Lucerne’s surroundings by ferry, cogwheel railway, and cable car. Alternatively, hang back in town and treat yourself to some rösti. Pronounced “ROO-sty,” this dish centers on grated, fried potatoes—kind of like a Swiss hashbrown. Top it with eggs or sausage to elevate it from a satisfying snack to a hearty meal.

Mount Pilatus

Cross into Liechtenstein, a tiny Alpine principality that dates to the Holy Roman Empire. (And we mean tiny: With a population of just under 40,000 people, it’s the sixth-smallest nation in the world.) Visit the capital, Vaduz, and pass the royal family’s namesake castle. Perched atop a hill, it has watched over the region since the 12th century and serves as the royal residence to this day.

After getting your passport stamped, continue into the Bavarian Alps, a range of limestone mountains and valleys furrowed by retreating glaciers during the last ice age. Amid this expanse of rocky peaks and alpine forests, you’ll take a slight detour.

  • Pause for photos of Neuschwanstein Castle’s unique mix of Gothic, Romanesque, and Byzantine architecture, and marvel at the fairytale retreat of “Mad” King Ludwig II.
  • Revel in the trim fields, mirrored lakes, and soaring peaks of the Alps as you relax and explore during your free time, or grab lunch in Schwangau, the town below Neuschwanstein.

Travel on to Munich and sit down to an included dinner, served with beer or wine.

Today, embark on a guided tour of Munich. Founded in the 12th century and boasting traditional and cosmopolitan appeal, the capital of Bavaria is the third-largest city in all of Germany. It’s also home to the original Oktoberfest—a massive Volksfest that, to this day, remains the largest beer festival in the world.

  • Travel past the 18th-century Englischer Garten—a gargantuan urban park that counts a Japanese teahouse and an open-air, Greek-style temple among its many monuments—and the fashionable Schwabing district, formerly home to Munich’s bohemian residents.
  • Enter Nymphenburg Palace, the Baroque home to past Bavarian royalty, and walk through its elaborately carved halls on a guided tour.
  • Walk from Odeonsplatz—Munich’s large central square, named after an adjacent former concert hall—through the well-manicured grounds of the Hofgarten to view the Residenz, once home to the Wittelsbach dukes of Bavaria.
  • Explore Marienplatz, Munich’s medieval heart, and see the famed Glockenspiel clock. Maybe you’ll catch it as it chimes!

If you choose, join your group on a visit to Dachau—the former site of a notorious Nazi concentration camp—and gain sobering perspective on one of humanity’s darkest eras. If you’d prefer to stay behind, spend the remainder of your day at your leisure—perhaps sipping a pint of local ale at a biergarten.

Depart Munich and head to Salzburg, Austria, a city famed for its churches and musical history. Upon arrival, a guide will lead you on a walking tour of its Old Town. Known locally as the Altstadt, Salzburg’s historic core has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, honoring its legacy as the confluence of Italian and German culture.

  • Pass by the University of Salzburg—an institution of higher learning first established in 1622—and St. Peter’s Abbey. Operating in some form or another since 696, it’s the oldest continually operating monastery in German-speaking Europe.
  • See a trio of famous squares: the Kapitelplatz, former site of the Cathedral Abbey; Residenzplatz, once home of the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg; and Alter Markt, where the city’s weekly market used to set up shop.
  • Walk by the dashing yellow facade of the Mozarts Geburtshaus, the birthplace and childhood home of the virtuosic composer himself.
  • Enter the richly ornamented Salzburg Cathedral. Although the current Baroque structure was built in the 17th century, the building’s roots go all the way back to 774, when Saint Rupert founded the church atop the remains of an old Roman town.

Want to make plans for the evening? Serenade your senses by opting for tonight’s dinner, served in one of Europe’s oldest restaurants and accompanied by live performances of Mozart’s music. Alternatively, relax in your hotel room and enjoy the sounds of the city.

Travel east to the Austrian capital of Vienna, stopping along the way in the little town of Melk for a guided tour of its Benedictine abbey. Built over the centuries following its foundation in 1089, this mammoth monastery typifies the Baroque style and offers immaculate views of the Wachau Valley’s stepped vineyards. Explore its pavilion, library, and chapel, then continue your journey through the Danube River Basin.

Arrive in Vienna and settle into your hotel. To bookend your day with some revelry, relaxation, and a glass or two of wine, take up tonight’s outing to the Prater—a historic amusement park in the heart of the city—before heading to a heuriger (a traditional Austrian tavern). Or, spend your evening strolling Vienna’s beautiful boulevards at your own pace.

Traditional Viennese Heurigen Evening

From $119 per person

Coffeehouse culture. The Age of Empires. Symphonies and orchestras. Vienna has influenced world affairs for centuries; today, you’ll enjoy the best of “The City of Dreams” on a guided sightseeing tour.

  • Step inside Belvedere Palace, home to the world’s largest collection of paintings by artist Gustav Klimt, and admire acre upon acre of impressive gardens.
  • Travel down the tree-canopied paths of the Ringstrasse—Vienna’s gorgeous Ring Road—passing the Austrian Parliament Building, Vienna State Opera, and Kunsthistorisches Museum as you go.
  • See the grand Hofburg Palace. Once the seat of the Habsburg dynasty, it now serves as the official residence and office of the president of Austria.

Celebrate a memorable trip with your group at a farewell dinner this evening and toast your adventures with beer or wine.

Transfer to the airport for your flight home—or head to the Czech Republic, home of the pilsner and birthplace of famed author Franz Kafka, for two more days of history and fun in picturesque Prague.

Head for Prague by way of Bohemia, the Czech Republic’s westernmost region. Oaks and spruces in varying shades of green, along with fertile fields populated by free-roaming livestock, typify this pastoral landscape. Drink it all in as you drive to the Czech capital.

Upon arrival, unwind in your hotel before setting off into the city streets. If you choose, you’ll spend an evening atop the Vltava River, enjoying a dinner cruise. Otherwise, take an evening to yourself and meander through the city, snacking on sweet koláče—pillowy discs of yeast dough loaded with fruity fillings—as you go.

switzerland tour package from berlin

Evening in Prague: River Cruise & Dinner

From $99 per person

Today, develop a deeper understanding of Prague’s history on a guided sightseeing tour, led by a local guide.

  • Begin with a visit to Prague Castle. Considered the largest ancient castle on the planet, this 1,150-year-old structure utilizes Gothic, Romanesque, and other architectural styles over its grounds. It isn’t just a relic, either: Once the seat of Bohemian kings, it currently serves as the presidential residence.
  • Admire the Gothic vaults of St. Vitus Cathedral, the final resting place of Rudolf II, Charles IV, and other Holy Roman emperors.
  • Walk down to the red shingles and Baroque buildings of the Malá Strana district. Originally founded by royal decree in 1257, the “Little Quarter” stands opposite the Old Town, just across the Vltava. Pop into a local cafe for a cup of coffee before continuing down to the riverbank.
  • Cross Karluv Most—the elegant Charles Bridge. Hewn from Bohemian sandstone and lined by statues of Catholic saints, it has connected Malá Strana to Prague’s Old Town since the 15th century.
  • Stroll through the Old Town Square to the Old Town Hall. There, on its southern wall, you’ll find Prague Orloj—the city’s famous Astronomical Clock. First hung in 1410, it’s the oldest timepiece of its kind still in use, marking each passing hour with a mechanized “Walk of the Apostles.”

  • This tour visits Switzerland, Germany, and Austria (plus the Czech Republic on the tour extension). In order to enter these countries, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
  • We recommend having at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
  • Beginning in 2025, U.S. and Canadian passport holders must register for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to enter many European countries.
  • Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S. and Canada) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to visit 30 European countries. That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these European countries without a visa, starting in 2025, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center .
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
  • You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to goaheadtours.com/entry-requirements and searching the code SGA.
  • Round-trip flights booked through Go Ahead Tours arrive in Zurich and depart from Vienna (or Prague on the tour extension).
  • Transfers to and from the airport at your destination are included for travelers who have purchased their flights through Go Ahead Tours. Travelers who purchase their own flights may request airport transfers with Go Ahead Tours for an additional cost if they are arriving or departing on the standard day.
  • When you arrive in Zurich, a Go Ahead representative will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall with a Go Ahead sign or a sign with your name(s). If you don’t see a representative immediately, please be patient and stay in the arrivals area. They may be assisting another traveler who has also just arrived and will be back shortly.

Physical Activity Level

This is a high physical activity-level tour. You can expect to be on the move on a regular basis throughout the course of the tour.

Tour Pacing

This is a brisk-paced tour. The pace of a tour itinerary considers how often you’ll switch hotels, the amount of planned daily activities, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:

  • One 1-night stay
  • Most days full of included activities (more if you add excursions)
  • Most transportation by motor coach
  • Daily bus time varies and can be lengthy

Walking, Terrain & Physical Requirements

  • Travelers should be prepared to walk 2-3 miles per day- this includes city streets, cobblestones, stairs, and hills.
  • Cobblestone streets can become slick when wet.
  • During the visit to Neuschwanstein, travelers can expect to walk 25 minutes uphill on a steep incline to view the castle and further walking to get to the castles entrance, if they wish.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance.
  • Please Note: Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on your tour.

Climate Considerations

  • In the summer months from June to September, travelers can expect high temperatures from 70Fs -80Fs and lows from 50Fs-60Fs with occasional extreme heatwaves.

Physical Activity & Tour Pace Questions

  • Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special mobility or luggage handling assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group enjoys a smooth and informative journey, and they can’t be relied on to provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • This tour moves at a reasonable pace to avoid missing scheduled stops. The rest of the group cannot miss any scheduled activities because of the needs of an individual.
  • Due to the pace and physical activity level of this tour, mobility aids such as wheelchairs or walkers will be difficult to use and are not recommended. Please notify Go Ahead Tours before your departure if you plan to bring these on tour with you.
  • If you have mobility concerns or tour pace questions, please visit our Help Center or send a message to our Customer Experience Team. We’re here to help!
  • Most transportation on this tour is by private motor coach. Private motor coaches have steps required to board and often do not provide access to ramps or lifts.
  • Please note that our travelers are limited to one checked bag and one carry-on bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches.
  • Some airlines may impose additional charges if you exceed baggage size and weight restrictions. Be advised that you are responsible for any baggage fees incurred on all flights.
  • Contact your airline(s) for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flights.
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.
  • Travelers must manage their own luggage throughout tour as porters are not guaranteed. This includes at hotels and airports.
  • We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • It is preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).
  • We recommend packing a reusable water bottle to cut down on single use plastic waste.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • We recommend packing your Insurance Card (from your primary insurance provider) in your carry on luggage.
  • Go Ahead handpicks every hotel to strike the balance of comfort, location, and local charm.
  • Accommodations are typically three and four star hotels.
  • All accommodations include a private bathroom.
  • Most rooms will include a safe for valuables.
  • Your hotels will have Wifi, but it may be limited to common areas.
  • Elevators in hotels are not guaranteed.
  • Some hotels on this tour require travelers to walk with their luggage a few blocks as buses cannot drop travelers off right out front.
  • Please be advised that the strength of the air conditioning in European hotels/buildings is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada.
  • We cannot guarantee that your hotel accommodations will have laundry services or facilities. We recommend checking directly with the hotel once they are confirmed about 30 days prior to departure.
  • Specific accommodations will vary based on your departure date.
  • Excursions are available for purchase prior to departure, and most excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour directly through your mobile app for an additional $10 USD.
  • We recommend purchasing excursions at least 3 days prior to your tour departure. Please note some excursions have advance booking deadlines. Check your tour itinerary for more information to ensure you don’t miss the deadline to add them.
  • Optional excursions may be canceled on tour due to reasons like low enrollment, weather or unexpected closures. If an excursion you signed up for is canceled by Go Ahead Tours, you will be refunded the full cost of the excursion. Please note it may take up to 60 days for your refund to be processed.
  • Your Tour Director may offer their own optional excursions which can only be purchased on tour via cash (in local currency).
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website at cdc.gov .
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies, please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour as well as any possible delays encountered.
  • Most of our itineraries include headsets used during certain sightseeing tours so travelers can hear their guides or Tour Director. If you use an assisted listening device, such as a hearing aid or cochlear implant, please contact our customer experience team as we may be able to provide alternative solutions to best suit your needs. Please note that at this time not all our destinations offer headsets due to supplier limitations.
  • The water is safe to drink throughout your tour unless posted otherwise.
  • This tour includes 3 dinners. Included meals may be plated set menus, buffet or family style depending on the location. Dinners include one glass of beer, wine, or soft drink and water, coffee and tea.
  • Breakfast each morning is also included at the hotel and is typically buffet style with hot and cold options.
  • Swiss food is varied and sophisticated, and some popular dishes include sausages, breaded veal fillets, freshwater fish, and cheese dishes such as fondue and raclette. Be sure to try Swiss chocolate, which is among the world’s finest.
  • German food is hearty and substantial. Among the specialties are dumpling stews, sauerkraut, sausages, smoked cheeses, and dark breads. Bavaria produces some of the world’s purest beers, and white German wines are exceptionally good.
  • Austria is known for its savory Wiener schnitzel and excellent wild trout, carp, and crayfish. Save room for dessert—especially the strudels of fruit and nuts and elegant chocolate cakes, such as the world-famous Sachertorte.
  • On the tour extension, Czech food is hearty, and you’ll find large portions of veal, beef, and potato dishes. Some of the world’s finest beers are produced here, including the original Budweiser and Pils.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • If you are traveling to multiple countries with different currencies and the same Tour Director, ask them what currency they prefer for their tip.
  • The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.
  • You will use the Swiss franc in Switzerland and the euro in Germany and Austria (and the Czech koruna in the Czech Republic on the tour extension).
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers. We also recommend keeping coins in the local currency on hand, as some public bathrooms may charge a fee for use.
  • To ensure you feel prepared before traveling on tour, we strongly recommend you download the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. The app is free and provides important deadlines, entry requirements, your detailed itinerary, packing tips and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the chat feature in the app.
  • Wifi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wifi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Your Tour Director will be leading your group throughout your journey. You will have the same Tour Director throughout your tour.
  • The role of the Tour Director is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each days’ activities and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and cannot provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • One of the benefits of traveling with EF Go Ahead Tours is our on tour emergency support team.
  • Our extensive network of offices around the world, and our integration of ISO 31000: Risk Management Guidelines, help our dedicated 24/7 Emergency Service teams anticipate and address on-tour challenges in a flexible and iterative way.
  • This team supports travelers and Tour Directors using a combination of extensive training, simulations, incident response planning, and decades of experience to help manage emergencies if they arise, ranging from personal health concerns or injuries to major world events.
  • As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.
  • Switzerland, Germany, and Austria (and the Czech Republic on the extension) are 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and 6 hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm on tour.
  • When you travel with EF Go Ahead Tours, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit, and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can make an enormous socio-economic impact to communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at local businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
  • Prepare for your trip: be aware of the monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market, learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette, and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
  • EF Go Ahead Tours encourages our travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single use plastics. You can avoid single use plastics by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
  • Environment: On this tour, we recommend the use of a reusable water bottle, as the local drinking water is safe for travelers. Your Tour Director can provide additional guidance on local water standards. Make sure to bring a reusable water bottle to cut down on single use plastics.

Switzerland Luxury Tours and Travel Guide

Featured Tour to Switzerland

Experience Swirtzerland like never before with our small group tours and dedicated Travel Concierge.

Majestic Switzerland Featured Luxury Tour

Majestic Switzerland

Step into a world of snow-capped mountains, traditional Alpine villages and warm hospitality. This idyllic tour takes you to fairy-tale castles, breathtaking peaks and storybook meadows.

What is Switzerland known for?

Must-see landmarks

Traditional cuisine

Traditional beverages

Landscape and wildlife

In the Engadine Valley you’ll find the chic ‘jet set' resort of St. Moritz. With more days of sunshine annually than anywhere else in Switzerland, it’s no wonder this is a well-loved destination. Winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, curling, tobogganing and bobsledding attract thousands of visitors each year. You don’t have to be a sports fanatic to make the best of St Moritz though.

Alternative activities include admiring the stunning scenery on a leisurely mountain hike, indulging in relaxing spa treatments or shopping in the elegant, designer boutiques. The Glacier Express is an iconic train ride not to be missed. Taking a total of seven hours, travel from St. Moritz to Zermatt, appreciating the incredible Alpine landscapes. While in Switzerland, you also need an adventure on Gornerhrat Bahn - the cogwheel train that winds slowly up the Gornergrat mountain. As the highest open-air railway in Europe, the views are astonishing.

In Montreux, be sure to visit Chillon Castle. This medieval property is situated at the foot of the Alps on a rocky islet in Lake Geneva. Boasting exceptionally beautiful architecture, the castle has been a source of inspiration for many writers and poets through the ages. Continuing on the medieval theme, the nearby, ancient town of Gruyères (home to the cheese of the same name) is a beautiful place to wander and explore. Likewise, Lucerne is another region that will capture your heart, with the options to: cruise pretty Lake Lucerne; admire the stirring Lion Monument (an immense structure dedicated to those who lost their lives in the French Revolution); visit the Old Town Hall; take in the breathtaking scenery at the covered bridges across Reuss River, and marvel at the quaint Weinmarkt Fountain, which dates back to the late 15th century.

It is possible to see all of these incredible sights, plus many other appealing locations when traveling through Switzerland on a Luxury Gold vacation.

Hearty cuisine is a given in Switzerland where you can feast on carb-rich, filling savory and sweet dishes. Let’s start with the cheese – around 450 different kinds, predominantly made from cow’s milk but a small percentage using sheep or goat’s milk.

While multiple copy-cat ‘Swiss’ cheeses can be found in other parts of the world, Emmental, Gruyère, Appenzeller, Sbrinz, Schabziger, Tilsit and Vacherin-Fribourgeois are just some of the native cheeses that are worthy contenders for your palate. Not surprisingly, cheese forms the base of many customary recipes, such as: rosti – like a hash brown comprised of fried grated potato, onion and cheese; fondue - where bread is dipped into a concoction of melted cheese, wine and garlic; ‘raclette’ - comprised of raclette cheese melted in layers over boiled potatoes, pickles, onions and sometimes cured meats; and ‘tartiflette’ - creamy Reblochon cheese melted over potatoes, bacon and caramelized onion.

Supposing cheese isn’t your thing, other popular foods that are readily available include delicious breads, sauerkraut, meat dishes (mainly veal, beef, pork, chicken or turkey) accompanied by potatoes and generous servings of vegetables and many pasta dishes. If you’re the sort that lives for dessert, Switzerland will be good to you, with heavenly chocolate in abundance and treats like meringues, Apfelküchlein (deep fried apple cookies, accompanied with vanilla sauce), wonderfully sweet Basel cookies, Nusstorte (a short crust tart with a nut filling), Vermicelles (a pastry tart filled with puréed chestnuts refined with butter or cherry brandy) and Engadiner Torte (a layered cake with vanilla butter cream and a Florentine top).

Breweries are plentiful in Switzerland and consequently, you’ll have your pick of craft beers. Appenzeller, Eichhof and Feldschloesschen are some of the favorites with locals.

Like many European countries, the Swiss make their own varieties of wine, with Pinot Noir, Chasselas, and Gamay being some of the most significant. Liqueurs also play a dominant role when it comes to beverages. Made from the juice of cherry pits, Kirsch is a common choice, as is Pflümli (made from plums) and Träsch (brandy made from cider pears).

Hot beverages like coffee, tea and hot chocolate will keep you toasty in colder altitudes. Meanwhile, refreshingly cold soft drinks like Flauder, Elmer Citro, Rivella, Passaia and Goba Cola are perfect in the Swiss summer sun. Chocolate even finds its way into soda in the form of Choclo (chocolate-flavored carbonated Swiss water).

As a small, mountainous, landlocked country, Switzerland is geographically surrounded by Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Lichtenstein. In addition to the Alpine region in the South, Switzerland’s two other significant landscapes are the Jura Mountains and the hilly Swiss Plateau. The latter is where approximately 70% of the population reside, as most of the main towns and cities are located here.

With close to 1,500 lakes, seven major rivers and large glacial expanses, Switzerland has a temperate climate that varies depending on altitude. Higher altitudes bring colder temperatures that make it difficult for fauna and flora to survive. Animals that have specially adapted to life in the Swiss mountains include chamois, ibex, marmots and red deer. Nearly 400 different varieties of bird inhabit this country, including kestrels, hawks, eagles, cranes, swans, woodpeckers and kingfishers. Meanwhile, the lakes and rivers attract beavers and otters (once both extinct in this region due to overhunting but now protected and making a comeback) and multiple freshwater fish species, such as trout and Atlantic salmon.

It all depends on what you'd like to do. If you're into skiing and want to save money, a package in February of March could work out just fine. If you're headed to Geneva or Zurich for a city break, May and June are great times to go, and the early fall is prime hiking season in most lower Alpine valleys.

Where should you stay in Switzerland during your vacation?

For any vacation type in switzerland:.

It doesn't matter whether you travel as a family, alone or as a couple, the Hotel Krebs in Interlaken will be ideal. It's well situated for skiing or summer hikes, while a range of bars and restaurants caters for evening entertainment. Airport shuttles from Zurich take around two hours.

For visitors to Geneva, nowhere beats the Beau Rivage. Blessed with a beautiful location overlooking the lake, it's a short walk from attractions like Saint-Pierre Cathedral and is well-equipped with amenities to enhance anyone's stay. Airport taxis take just 10-15 mins.

For family vacations in Switzerland:

Geneva's Grand Hotel Kempinski is among the city's elite family hotels, with a Sunday children's club taking the pressure off parents, a wellness spa and pool. And it's all around 15 mins from Geneva airport (or 25 mins by bus).

If you're arranging a family ski trip to Zermatt, the Grand Hotel Zermatthof will fit the bill. A classic continental ski lodge, it provides relaxing massages, has three restaurants, an indoor pool and staff who are experts at handling kids. The taxi from Geneva Airport takes about 4 hours.

For romantic vacations in Switzerland:

The Hotel d'Angleterre is a wonderful boutique hotel in Geneva where the rooms are furnished with little touches like bathrobes, extra-soft pillows and iPod docks - creating an intimate, romantic atmosphere. It's handily located in the city center, around 15 mins by taxi from the airport.

The Gstaad Palace is perfect for skiing escapes with the one you love. Located at the base of a stupendously beautiful valley, it has 5 restaurants, a pool and spa which specializes in aromatherapy sessions - ideal for recovering from a day on the slopes. The drive from Geneva takes 2 hours.

For luxury vacations in Switzerland:

Located in the upscale ski resort of St Moritz, the San Gian is everything luxury ski fans could hope for, offering hot stone massages and reflexology, while hooking guests up with secure ski storage and the all-important passes. Zurich airport is around 4 hours away by road.

Cresta Palace is a superb premium ski hotel in Celerina where the deep soaking tubs provide the perfect way to recover from a day on the slopes, and the dining options seem to go on and on. The closest airport is Milan Malpensa in Italy, which is 3 hours away by taxi or hire car.

For budget vacations in Switzerland:

If you're taking your family to Zurich, the Novotel Zurich Airport Messe is both cheap and extremely convenient - as well as being a comfortable, friendly hotel. It has a terrace bar, fitness center and sauna, and is 5 mins from the airport.

Budget travelers can explore the fascinating city of Geneva without paying a fortune by staying at the Hotel des Alpes, where free wi-fi and hearty buffet breakfasts ensure a contented stream of customers. And the 3 mile distance from the airport means that transfers are extremely quick.

Day 1 Wurzburg

Take the train from Frankfurt International Airport to Wurzburg Central Station . The city is idyllically located in the midst of  vineyards , with the medieval Fortress Marienberg towering above. Wurzburg is an old bishop’s seat and a lively town, proudly presenting monuments of different eras. Culture, art, history and hospitality are ever-present in this remarkable city! Fortress Marienberg (admission included), Wurzburg´s landmark, has of course changed its appearance a great deal since it was first mentioned, today the oldest part of the fortress is the “ Rundkirche ” (round church) which was built in the year one thousand. The Cathedral , the Marienkapelle, the “ Alte Mainbrucke ” (old bridge across the river Main ), the Juliusspital and the “Kappele” are musts, but make sure that you do not miss out on the “ Furstbischofliche Residenz “, Prince Bishops Residence (admission included). This “Palace above all Palaces” is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy this beautiful town which offers not only cultural but also culinary highlights such as the hearty cuisine and, of course, the world famous Frankenwein (Franconia wine!).

Day 2 Nuremberg

By High-speed Rail (ICE) it takes less than 2,5 hours from Frankfurt/Frankfurt Airport to Nuremberg.  Your hotel is located in walking distance from Nuremberg Central Station (which is located just outside the Old City Wall surrounding Nuremberg Old Town and the Imperial Castle). Nuremberg’s history reaches back to the year 1050, its name “nourenberc” translates into “rocky hill”. Nuremberg’s famous landmark, the “Kaiserburg” ( Imperial Castle ), towers above the Old town, which is protected by the five kilometers long city wall, many towers and gates can still be visited. The medieval Castle is one of the most important imperial palaces dating from the middle ages from the 11th century (admission included). In the Third Reich Adolf Hitlers´Nazi Party had chosen Nuremberg for their  Nazi Rallies and if you are interested in that part of history you may want to visit the Documenation Center Nazi Rally Grounds which are located just south of the Old Town. When exploring the beauty of Nuremberg’s medieval Old Town you may want to start right at the Koenigstor (“Kingsgate”) which is the gate right across from Nuremberg Central Station. From where the timber framed buildings, the Gothic Church of  St.Lawrence and the Church of St.Sebaldus can be easily reached by foot. Right next to the Koenigstor is the Handwerkerhof (craft center), here you will feel like you are back in the medieval times, there are craft workshops like they used to have a long time ago as well as a gingerbread bakery. Make sure to enjoy a  Nuremberg Bratwurst along with a beer or a glass of “Frankenwein” (franconian wine).

The tour will take you by the famous “Alois Dallmayr ” luxury delicatessen and coffee store as well as to the Hofbrauhaus of course, probably the world’s most popular beer hall. This may be a great place to enjoy a hearty dinner and a fresh Mass of beer (one mug holds 33.8 US fl oz)!

Day 4 Escorted coach tour to the Royal Castles

Another highlight of your Europe Rail tour will be a visit of the world famous Neuschwanstein Castle . You will be on an all-day escorted coach tour which will first take you to Oberammergau for a photo stop (you may want take a look at the Festival Hall where the Passion Play takes place every ten years.) The coach will then take you to Linderhof Palace , the Royal Villa of King Ludwig II. The Palace and Park were inspired by Versailles and the rooms are beautifully decorated and furnished. After a short drive through Austria and back into Germany you will get to Neuschwanstein Castle. The picture of Neuschwanstein is probably present in everybody’s mind and Neuschwanstein really seems to be taken out of a fairy tale. You will join an English-speaking guided tour through the Castle. The tour of the interior, the Throne Hall , the Hall of the Singers , the Grotto and all of the private rooms which were built for King Ludwig II, will make the picture perfect! After the tour of the inside make sure to take some time to explore the castle grounds. The view of Neuschwanstein from the bridge behind the castle is like no other! Visit Lindenhof , a haven of peace and tranquility in the heart of the city. At the church “ Fraumünster ” you can find glass windows that has been created by Marc Chagall . If you want to do some shopping a visit of the “ Bahnhofstrasse ” is a must. The street runs from the Main Station right down to the lake. It is said to be among the most beautiful shopping areas in Europe and with its boutiques and stores it is also known to be one of the most exclusive and expensive shopping streets in the world. In Zürich you might want to look for a new Swiss made watch but you definitely have to try a piece of the Swiss Chocolate (Frey or Lindt)

Day 6 Lucerne

Lucerne is the capital of the Canton of Lucerne and an important tourist destination due to its location on the shore of Lake Lucerne – within sight of Mount Pilatus and Rigi. The train ride will be an absolute highlight of your tour, the Swiss Alp Mountain Scenery is just beautiful! Visit the Chapel Bridge : It is a 14th century wooden bridge crossing the Reuss River in the Old Town. The Chapel Bridge with the octagonal water tower is a famous landmark of Lucerne.

You will come across 17th century triangular painted roof panels lining the ceiling of this covered bridge, recounting important events from Swiss history and mythology. it is the most photographed monument in Switzerland. Don´t forget to visit one of the world’s most famous monuments: The Dying Lion of Lucerne. It was carved out of natural rock a renowned Danish/Icelandic sculptor, commemorates the hundreds of Swiss guards who were massacred during the French Revolution in 1792. Mark Twain says about the Lion of Lucerne that it is the saddest and most moving piece of rock in the world.

Day 7 “Golden Pass” Panorama train ride

In the morning take the Scenic-Panorama “Golden-Pass”-train ride from Lucerneto Interlaken.  Interlaken (Latin for “between the lakes”) is nestled between two lakes: Lake Thun and Lake Brienz . It also affords a view of the worlds famous Icy Icons: the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau . The Jungfrau – Top of Europe – can be reached by train. The tour does not include the tickets for the train journey up to the mountain since it will not be worth going up there if you have bad weather. Even in the summer time there can be days with snowfall and fog. However, if the weather is nice we recommend to go – this wonder-world of eternal snow and ice is absolutely stunning. Tickets can be bought right at the Interlaken West Station (where you arrived). Visit the Ice Palace and its sculptures or enjoy the breathtaking views from the Sphinx look-out terrace over the Aletsch Glacier , the longest ice stream in Europe, to the surrounding mountain peaks of the neighboring countries.

In less than one hour the Speed Rail will take you from Interlaken to Bern.  Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote about Bern: “It is the most beautiful that we have ever seen”. Albert Einstein lived here from 1903 until 1905. Don´t miss to visit the Cathedral of Bern. It is Switzerland’s largest ecclesiastical building. Construction started in 1421, the spire was finally completed in 1893. At its portal you can see a depiction of the Last Judgment. Climb up Switzerland´s highest church to have a marvelous view cross the city and into the Bernese Mittelland and the snow-capped mountains of the Bernese Oberland. The Old Town ob Bern is very scenic and it has a unique medieval character. The historic center, almost completely surrounded by the Aare River, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Very unique are the numerous arcades you will find in Bern.

After a long day you may want to have something to eat at the Schwellenmätteli , a famous restaurant in Bern. Located on the banks of the River Aare you’ll feel like you’re on an island vacation.

Day 9 Frankfurt

It takes about four hours from Bern to Frankfurt Central Station.  Your hotel is located within a short walking distance of Frankfurt Central Station . Frankfurt is a very modern metropolis which nevertheless offers many historic sites such as the Romerberg  (hill of the Romans) with its beautifully restored timber-framed houses ,  the Goethe Haus where the world famous poet once lived; the Paulskirche , symbol for democracy and freedom in Germany; “ Alt-Sachsenhausen “, where in Schellgasse number 6 you will find Frankfurt’s oldest timber-framed house, built around 1291, to name only a few of Frankfurt’s historic landmarks.

The Frankfurt Museum Riverbank is one of the most important locations for museums in Germany and Europe. The exhibition buildings are lined up on both sides of the Main riverbank, several famous museums are to be found in the city centre. Visit the “ Stadel “, the German Museum of Architecture as well as the Museum of Applied Art or the “ Schirn Kunsthalle ” to name only a very few. Don’t miss out on Frankfurt’s “ Zeil “, a huge pedestrian zone where shopping is the name of the game. So, if you arrive early enough in Frankfurt, visiting this interesting metropolis is certainly worthwhile.

We just got back from our 10 day tour of Germany and Switzerland. We were so impressed As we are about land back in the U.S, we were so impressed with the trip you put together for us. Great cities. Nice, clean hotels conveniently located a short walk from the train stations. Train tickets already printed and ready to use so we didn’t have to fool with that, and printouts via your emails that listed the track number, our seat numbers, and departure and arrival times. Passes for use of the public transport system in a few of the cities. A good list of stuff to see and do on your website that we took with us. You guys were also very responsive over the last two years whenever I would email you with a question or concern. Just an all around wonderful experience. Thank you very much.
We just got back from a vacation in Europe and we had an amazing time,Especially memorable was the customized rail tour we arranged with to-europe.com. A dream I had was to one day experience the Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria and go up to the "Top of Europe" Jungfraujoch. I was not sure how to combine this idea in one vacation until I read on to-europe.com website that they had options for me to visit both areas, Our train tour was fantastic and I saw so much more that what I bargained for. Extra tours that were not planned for we also did a long the way and this added value to our tour. Every day after every train trip we did something new and each experience (tour) was unique and memorable. The trains are really efficient.. Many had WIFI in them to our amazement, The hotels were excellent and a short trip from the train stations. We met many people along the way.....but what was most memorable to me was that to-europe.com was able to customize my vacation experience in such a way that i got to make my "2 dreams" reality. The team that organised my trip was also very efficient. Every hotel, train and tour was booked accordingly with all documentation there when we got to our first hotel. All vouchers that were emailed to me were correct and even the post made it in a short period of time all the way to South Africa. I would like to thank Michaela, Thomas and Petra for all the organisation behind the scenes that led to a fantastic vacation. I would recommend booking tour through this company any day! Thank you guys!

Frequently Asked Questions about Travel to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland

Most of our guests travel to Central Europe from the US by air, unless they are already traveling in a neighboring country. There are direct flights from the US to many of the large cities in Germany and Switzerland, such as Munich, Berlin, Geneva and Zurich, and some to the Austrian capital of Vienna. We usually recommend getting an “open jaw” ticket which has you flying in to the first city on your trip and out of the last. This will save time and usually cost less when you factor in the cost of returning to the first city on your itinerary. The exception is if you opt for a self-drive itinerary, in which case a round trip route will make more sense due to one-way fees. Although we don’t sell airfare, our travel advisors will help you pick out the best fare and routing.

With so many potential routes, we advise starting in the city that offers you the best flights for your arrival.

Spring, early summer and early fall are the very best times of year to visit this part of Europe if you’re visiting for a primarily cultural and historical interest trip. The weather across all the countries is not dissimilar to that of New York. July and August can be very warm and in summer each of the city’s orchestras and opera companies are on vacation too. In winter (January to March) some Swiss and Austrian destinations have their peak season due to winter sports. The cities experience another busy period with Christmas markets visitors from late November until New Years.

All our tours are custom, based on your preferences for accommodation, excursions and transport method. All our suggested Germany, Austria, and Switzerland itineraries have a price guide function so you can get an instant price estimate. In general Switzerland is much more expensive than its neighbors, so reducing the number of nights spent in Switzerland can result in big savings.

It would be difficult to see all three countries thoroughly in a single trip without spending several weeks. At a minimum we suggest a ten night itinerary, which can be adjusted to include your choice of destinations and activities.

Most cities in each of the countries are well connected by rail and road. Based on your preferences and budget we can include train or bus station transfers and tickets, or door-to-door private transfers in your travel package. One advantage of a private transfer over taking the train is the ability to make stops at places of interest along the way. For certain itineraries, or sections of them, you might want to drive, and we can include a car rental in your package.

In Germany and Austria you will use the Euro. Although Switzerland is part of the European Economic Area, it is not a member of the EU and so has its own currency, the Swiss Franc.

All our vacation packages in the region are private, custom tour packages. We like to call this semi-independent travel. We make all the arrangements, from airport transfers, accommodation, excursions, and transport between cities. You can opt for private or group excursions and activities as part of your package. Or you can choose to leave some days free for exploring on your own. Unlike an escorted tour, you aren’t paying to have a guide, driver or tour director the whole time, just when needed, so our packages are more affordable too.

Germany and Switzerland itinerary for 7-14 days Arzo Travels

Ultimate Germany and Switzerland Itinerary (7-14 Days)

How to see germany and switzerland in 7-14 days.

Germany and Switzerland are both fascinating countries to visit  – both offer diverse attractions and activities. You surely cannot go wrong with planning a Germany and Switzerland itinerary to see some of the most beautiful places in Europe. Given the geography, it is quite easy to visit both countries on one trip, one after another.

Table of Contents

And though Switzerland is not part of the EU, it is part of the Schengen Agreement. This will allow you to visit it if you have a visa for the EU. So, today I share my favorite tips with you, so that you can have a fantastic trip to Germany and Switzerland. Whether you visit for 7, 10, or 14 days – this itinerary for Switzerland and Germany will help you plan your trip.

TRAVEL TIPS FOR YOUR GERMANY AND SWITZERLAND ITINERARY

So, as a German and Switzerland enthusiast, I share my tips for having an amazing time in Switzerland and Germany.

HOW TO GET AROUND SWITZERLAND AND GERMANY

Driving in Germany

  • The streets are mostly well-paved and safe, and people drive well. However, there are a lot of construction projects on the motorways which often result in traffic jams.
  • There are many motorway streets without speed limits, but many do have a speed limit you should stick to (speed cams are placed throughout the country). There are no tolls for cars in Germany.

Public Transportation in Germany

  • Getting around via trains and buses is actually easy and, overall, okay in Germany. The trains are not always on time, some connections might be canceled, and it isn’t cheap. However, compared to places that do not have any train service, I guess we Germans should consider ourselves lucky.

Driving in Switzerland

  • Mountain streets are usually a bit more challenging, but overall, I looooove driving in Switzerland. The roads are mostly well-paved and safe, and people drive well.
  • Check out my post with  driving tips for Switzerland .

Public Transportation in Switzerland

  • You cannot go with when choosing public transportation in Switzerland.
  • Trains and buses are punctual and reliable. And the window views are out of this world.

TIP: If you plan to get around via public transportation, make sure to check out the Swiss Travel Pass, which is perfect for tourists.

  • There are different Swiss Travel Passes available regarding flexibility and duration.  Flexible passes allow you to use the pass for a certain amount of days within one month or the regular, more affordable option, which means you have to use the pass on consecutive days of travel.
  • Yes, the Swiss Travel Pass is quite expensive but it will pay off.
  • You can use buses and trains without any extra costs .
  • Also, most boat cruises and some mountain excursions are included.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass also covers most museums and entrances to castles .
  • The great thing about it is that you never have to worry about finding parking spaces and instead use buses and trains.
  • Click here to find the rates for a Swiss Travel Pass.

COSTS OF TRAVELING TO GERMANY + SWITZERLAND

Prices always depend on where you stay, what kind of accommodation you choose, what mode of transport and more. It is almost impossible to give numbers, but I will try (though it is very vague).

If you are a mid-budget traveler and travel with someone, you should expect to pay 120-250€ per person per day. This includes public transportation and eating out (in Switzerland, you should try to go vegetarian, as meat prices are high) but no alcohol.

The costs in Switzerland will probably be much higher if you eat out each day and use a lot of cable cars. Check out my tips for Switzerland on a budget here .

If you are on a budget, you can travel for less (assuming you stay in hostels and cook for yourself at least once in a while) – but public transportation or renting a car will always be quite high.

ARE SWITZERLAND AND GERMANY SAFE?

If you are a solo (female) traveler, you will be happy to hear that Switzerland and Germany are great to travel alone, and there are no extra precautions I take – except for avoiding dodgy areas (especially at night) and watching my surroundings. Just keep your eyes open and exercise common sense, and you should be fine as both are quite safe travel destinations overall.

MORE TIPS FOR GERMANY + SWITZERLAND

  • Bring your reusable water bottle and refill it at the hotel, etc. You can just refill your bottle with fresh mountain water from fountains in the southern parts of Germany an d Switzerland . Unless it says “KEIN TRINKWASSER, “ – then don’t drink it.
  • Tap water is fine in many places.
  • If you don’t like “Sparkling water,” then shy away from “Wasser mit Kohlensäure” and ask for “still” water. You will not get free tap water with your food (you might get a little glass of tap water if you order an espresso).
  • If you buy water bottles in Germany (or soft drinks in bottles or cans), you have to pay a little deposit of about 0.25€, which you will get back when you return it to any supermarket.
  • Credit and debit cards are accepted widely. However, in smaller shops and villages, that might not be the case.
  • You cannot pay at some ticket centers with your credit card, so always have cash on you (American Express is, unfortunately, not as widely accepted as Visa or MasterCard).

SWITZERLAND AND GERMANY ITINERARY FOR 7 DAYS

  • Munich – 1- 1,5 Days
  • Neuschwanstein Castle & Füssen – 1 Day
  • Lucerne – 1 Day
  • Interlaken – 3 Days

Travel Time Around 12 Hours in Total

With only one week in Switzerland and Germany, I focus on destinations that are very close to each other, so travel time is reduced. But these places are still stunning – so there is no compromise on the beauty, just on travel duration. However, to see some of the best places these countries have to offer, you will need to travel to some degree.

MUNICH – 1-1,5 DAYS

Munich is a perfect starting destination – with a big airport and many trains arriving in Munich, it is easy to start international travel here.

Image

From lakes, parks to museums, historical sites, and shopping opportunities: Munich has something for everyone. It is one of Germany’s biggest cities, so there are tons to do and see, but in this case, I suggest spending only 1 or 1.5 days in Munich.

THINGS TO DO IN MUNICH

  • Visit Marienplatz
  • Rest at English Garden
  • Visit Munich Residenz Palace
  • Check out Viktualienmarkt

NEUSCHWANSTEIN CASTLE & FÜSSEN – 1 DAY

Then, early in the morning, continue your journey. The crowds will come, so early in the morning is really the best time to leave Munich).

One of the most beautiful and gorgeous pieces of architecture must be the Neuschwanstein Castle, south of Munich. However, it is very popular amongst visitors from all around the world, so be prepared to rub shoulders with many of them.

Image

Spend the afternoon and evening in the cute town of Füssen and have dinner here before continuing your journey to Switzerland.

Tip: Since prices in Füssen (which are quite high for Germany) are still cheaper than in Switzerland, I suggest spending the night here.

Even with so few days in Germany, it is a perfect day trip as it is also close to the Swiss border.

THINGS TO DO IN/AROUND NEUSCHWANSTEIN CASTLE & FÜSSEN

  • Get to Marienbrücke
  • Visit Neuschwanstein Castle
  • Walk around Alpssee (lake)
  • Visit Hohenschwangau Castle
  • Learn at the Museum of the Bavarian Kings
  • Check out more tips for Schloss Neuschwanstein here

You will have to skip many gorgeous places in Germany. However, in Switzerland, you will find out what “beyond breathtaking“ scenery really means.

LUCERNE – 1 DAY

Traveling from Füssen to Lucerne, whether by public transportation or car, will take several hours. One day in Lucerne is not a lot, so make the most of it by not arriving late.

Lucerne is one of the prettiest towns in Europe . Whether you come here in winter or during any other season, this place doesn’t disappoint.

Image

Nestled between the Swiss Alps , this town offers the chance to have a city trip while being surrounded by stunning nature. That is also why I preferred Lucerne over Zurich for this itinerary.

After exploring the old town (and the famous Chapel Bridge) and marvel at the unique and historic buildings, you can add a mountain excursion for the afternoon.

THINGS TO DO IN LUCERNE

  • Explore the old town
  • Pass Chapel Bridge
  • Visit Lion Monument
  • Enjoy the Views from Mount Rigi
  • Spend time in Mount Pilatus
  • Here are more Lucerne travel tips

INTERLAKEN / JUNGFRAU – 3 DAYS

Then it is time to head to the final destination – may I introduce you to my most favorite area in the world?

The train ride , or drive, from Lucerne to Interlaken is scenic. If you take the train, make sure to take the Luzern-Interlaken Express (not all train rides have the same route and the Express trains are normally the most scenic ones).

If you road trip, plan in some time at Brüning Pass and have a cold drink while parking your car and enjoying the views.

Image

Then spend the rest of your time in one of the most unique destinations in the world, where you will have an abundance of stunning lakes, mountain peaks, cute towns and villages, and more. Yes, I meant Interlaken.

There is surely no shortage of activities. And while Interlaken itself is cute, the scenery is actually what makes this place amazing.

I have spent many weeks in Interlaken – and I am sure, I will never tire. Check out my post on top activities to do in Interlaken for more tips.

Image

THINGS TO DO IN INTERLAKEN IN 4 DAYS

  • Visit Oeschinensee (see picture) above
  • Explore Thun and Lake Thun
  • Go up Brienzer Rothorn and Lake Brienz
  • Explore Lautrebrunnen
  • more tips for Interlaken

With that itinerary, you have seen some of the most beautiful places in Germany and Switzerland in only 7 days.

10 DAYS IN SWITZERLAND AND GERMANY ITINERARY

  • Munich – 1,5 Day
  • Eibsee or Rothenburg ob der Tauber – 1 Day
  • Zurich – 1 Day
  • Lucerne – 1,5 Day
  • Interlaken – 3,5 Days

Travel time around 12 hours (with Eibsee) in total or 17 hours (Rothenburg ob der Tauber)

ROTHENBURG OB DER TAUBER – 1 DAY

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is north of Munich and also further away from Switzerland. However, this detour is actually well worth it.

Image

Rothenburg is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Germany. What this actually means is that the old buildings are picture-perfect, and since Rothenburg is small, you can do quite a lot in half a day or a full day.

If you do not want to take the detour (which is somehow understandable since it takes about 2,5-3 hours one way) then I suggest heading to Eibsee which is Germany´s prettiest lake close to Neuschwanstein Castle.

THINGS TO DO IN ROTHEBURG OB DER TAUBER

  • Stroll the old town
  • Walk Around the Old Walls
  • Visit the Christmas Museum
  • Have a Coffee at Cafe Einzigartig
  • Check out  more travel tips for Rothenburg

EIBSEE & ZUGSPITZE – 1 DAY

Located right at the foot of Zugspitze mountain it is a perfect place to explore what the German Alps have to offer.

Just walk around the Eibsee and have a picnic.

Image

You have amazing mountain peaks in Switzerland but if you want to enjoy views from Germany´s highest mountain, Zugspitze, then you can also take a cable car to get up or you hike up.

Tip: If you visit Eibsee and Füssen/Neuschwanstein Castle, I suggest visiting Eibsee first and then go to Neuschwanstein Castle.

ZURICH – 1 DAY

In Switzerland, I suggest adding Zurich to your itinerary for one day.

It will be the first stop in Switzerland coming from Germany. While I normally recommend staying 2 days in Zurich, one day is good to see the main sights.

Image

Though Zurich is not the capital of Switzerland, it is the busiest and biggest city with the most expensive shopping street in the world (Bahnhofsstrasse), a beautiful lake, and an old town that you should not miss during your day there.

THINGS TO DO IN ZURICH:

  • Stroll Bahnhofsstrase
  • Swim in Lake Zurich (and do a boat Cruise)
  • Enjoy the views from Lindenallee
  • Explore the Old Town
  • Find more  travel tips for Zurich here

After that, head to Lucerne and follow the itinerary I talk about for 7 days.

GERMANY AND SWITZERLAND FOR 14 DAYS

This 2-week itinerary will allow you to visit even more places in Germany, as well as in Switzerland. So, compared to the 10-day itinerary, you will have 2 new destinations and can spend 2 full days in Lucerne and Munich.

Also, you can give yourself more time to enjoy the actual traveling, as road tripping and train travel (at least in Switzerland) give you the option to enjoy the breathtaking scenery, and you can take some rest and just soak in the beauty.

  • Berlin – 1,5 Days
  • Munich – 1,5 Days
  • Appenzellerland – 1 Day
  • Lucerne – 2 Days

BERLIN – 1,5-2 DAYS

Berlin is new on the 2-week itinerary. Germany´s capital is for sure an interesting place to visit. But it is located quite far up north, and with 10 days in both countries, you would stress yourself out too much by adding it to a shorter itinerary.

However, with 14 days, start your itinerary in Berlin and spend 1,5-2 days there.

Image

It is quite a big city, but thanks to good public transportation, you can get around easily and see some of the best places in a short time.

Then either take a train to Munich or drive south (it is a rather long train ride, which takes around 6 hours) and stop in Rothenburg first before continuing your trip to Munich.

Tip: If you plan to rent a car, I suggest renting the car after your time in Berlin and not driving in the city itself. Even though taking a plane from Berlin to Munich may sound better at first, you will not save tons of time considering that the airport in Munich is very far from the city center, and then add in all the check-in times, etc.

THINGS TO DO IN BERLIN

  • Visit Brandenburger Tor
  • Head to Reichstag
  • Visit the Holocaust Memorial
  • Check out…Checkpoint Charlie
  • Stroll Gendarmenmarkt
  • Here are  more travel tips for Berlin

APPENZELLERLAND – 1 DAY

Appenzellerland has become popular because of the stunning mountain restaurant, the Aescher. However, it is not on many Switzerland itineraries though it should be.

The Aescher is a mountain restaurant located on Ebenalp Mountain in the Alpstein area.

Image

It is a unique destination and it is quite easy to get there (okay, only by cable car, if you hiked it would take 1-2 hours but it is quite steep).

On your way up – or down – make sure to also see Seealpsee (a beautiful mountain lake) and rest before continuing your journey.

You can either stay overnight at a guest house, which is located even higher than the Aescher, or you can book a room in the cute and colorful village of Appenzell.

I have added Appenzellerland to this itinerary because the landscape is different from many other places in Switzerland . Personally, it felt that no hills and mountains are greener and lusher than here, which makes driving here even more fun.

From there, continue your trip to Zurich and add the places mentioned above.

THINGS TO DO IN APPENZELLERLAND

  • Have lunch at the Aescher
  • Hike Up Ebenalp Mountain Guest House
  • Rest at Seealpsee
  • Explore Appenzell town center
  • More  travel tips for Appenzellerland

CREATING A PERFECT SWITZERLAND & GERMANY ITINERARY

As you can see, you can combine your Switzerland and Germany trip quite easily. That surely will not be the most budget-friendly trip you can take, but it is a trip to remember!

And if you can make it happen, try to visit Switzerland and Germany for 14 days or at least 10 days.

Thanks to good public transportation in both countries you can just lay back and enjoy window views while getting around or you can rent a car and explore both countries by car. Either way, it surely will be fun!
