One of the best places to travel in May for sailing are the islands of Tahiti, thanks to the Tahiti Pearl Regatta . Billing itself as "an ideal balance between a sporting competition and a festive discovery of the islands," the four-day event invites yachtsmen to discover French Polynesia by sea. Best Places to Travel in May: Oahu, Hawaii

Oahu takes the tradition of honoring fallen heroes on Memorial Day to a beautiful level with the Lantern Floating Hawaii ceremony. Each year, thousands gather at Ala Moana Beach on the South Shore to pay their respects to lost loved ones via floating lanterns. Each family receives one lantern to place into the water, with three sides where remembrances and prayers can be written before sending it off into the horizon. If you can't make it in person, the event is also streamed live.

The end of April brings enviable room rates and perfect weather (the sticky wet season is still a month or more away) — plus the St. Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival . May in the Caribbean: Weather, What to Pack, and What to See

top islands to visit in may

Simon Dannhauer / Getty Images

By all accounts, May is one of the best times to take a Caribbean vacation. The tourist season of winter has come to an end and travel deals are aplenty, so keep an eye out for cheap flights and rooms. The Caribbean never really gets cold, but May is the final month before the rainy season starts, meaning you can expect tropical temperatures with clear skies. To top it all off, you can also find great events happening all over the region, just in case you need an extra reason for booking a trip.

Hurricane Season in the Caribbean

Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through November 30, so it's unlikely that your trip in May will be affected by inclement weather. Hurricanes are unpredictable though, and peak season can vary according to geography. The season is typically busiest between mid-August and mid-September.

Caribbean Weather in May

Temperatures in the Caribbean stay fairly constant throughout the year, so you don't ever have to worry about it being too hot or too cold. Humidity does start to go up in May which can make it feel hotter than it is, but it's not as muggy as it is in the summer months.

The rainy season really begins in June and May is fairly dry, but thunderstorms are always a possibility. However, rain usually comes in short and intense bursts on an otherwise sunny day, so even if you do get some wet weather it shouldn't hamper your trip.

What to Pack

Packing for your Carribean trip in May deserves some special consideration. Regardless of where you're visiting, loose-fitting cotton layers will keep you cool during the day, while a light sweater and slacks will be just right for the cooler evenings. Don’t forget swimsuits, plenty of sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. You’ll want dressier clothes for visiting nice restaurants or clubs along with more formal footwear than just flip-flops and sneakers, although casual resort wear is widely accepted.

May Events in the Caribbean

Tourist season may be coming to an end, but the Caribbean is still putting out all kinds of events to keep visitors and locals entertained after the busy Carnival season . The islands are hopping with concerts, sailing and fishing tournaments, end-of-season Carnival parties, and more.

  • Barbados holds its well-known Crop Over Festival each year from May through August. The long-running event celebrates the end of the sugar-cane season with three months of festivities.
  • The Grenada Chocolate Festival is a nationwide event in Grenada celebrating everyone's favorite confection. You can also take part in this sweet event by seeing how chocolate is made from start to finish, and the cacao farms across Grenada all host activities to accompany the festival.
  • If you missed the Carnival celebrations earlier in the year, you can still catch St. Maarten Carnival , which is the longest and the latest celebration in the region. Bring your colorful outfits and party spirit for this event which lasts until early May.
  • The other biggest late-season Carnival festival is Batabano on the Cayman Islands, which primarily takes place in the capital city of George Town. Throughout the first week of May, take part in one of the island's biggest celebrations with music, street parties, and West Indian cuisine.
  • For a taste of Puerto Rican arts, the Campechada is a multi-disciplinary festival that showcases the best of local music, painting, photography, theater, film, and all other mediums. It takes place in a different city on the island each year, but always during the beginning of May.
  • Antigua Sailing Week is the biggest regatta in the region and a must-see event for those who love being on the sea. It's held annually from late April into early May. (Antigua Sailing Week was canceled in 2021 and returns April 30 to May 6, 2022.)

May Travel Tips

  • If you want to see several Caribbean destinations at once, consider a cruise . In addition to good weather, May is the off-peak season which means that prices will be lower than your typical winter cruise.
  • While May is never extremely crowded throughout the region, coming earlier in the month will ensure that there are fewer kids as schools get out for the summer later on into May.
  • May is warm and sunny overall, but the region can experience a brief rainy season during this month so come prepared with raingear.

The Best Caribbean Islands to Visit in 2024

By Brian Major

The Best Caribbean Islands to Visit in 2024

I’ve been fortunate to travel widely across the Caribbean over the last 30 years. I’m also a descendant of Caribbean people, so many folks assume I’ve visited every island. Not likely—the Caribbean consists of 28 islands encompassing just over one million square miles. So while I’ve visited most, there are still a handful I’ve yet to encounter. But that’s a good thing. Many know the Caribbean of picture-perfect views —all lush green hillsides, soft beaches, sunny skies, sun loungers, and poolside cocktails. But that’s really just the white-sandy surface of this region, where each island has something distinct to offer. On Dominica , hiking is unmatched, notably its Boiling Lake, a flooded fumarole located in Morne Trois Pitons National Park, where you can traverse across the rim of an active volcano. The best island hopping is in the British Virgin Islands , while Barbados is the action island, where the historic Garrison horse racing takes place year-round.

If you’re looking to soak up some winter sun by a pool lounger and nothing more, then any island in the Caribbean will do—the hotels in St Barth's are amongst some of the best in the world. But if you’re willing to dig a little deeper and venture beyond the resort gates, these are the best islands in the Caribbean.

Which is the best Caribbean island for families?

When little travelers are involved, the ease of a resort jam-packed with activities can take the strain off parents and let everyone enjoy the trip. For this reason, Barbados is the ideal Caribbean island for families, and there’s everything from larger, more affordable resorts to smaller boutique offerings. For intergenerational holidays and trips with slightly older children, consider hiring out a villa— Oliver’s Travels allows customers to filter results by ‘great for kids.’

Barbados

Best island for: action

Barbados might just be one of the best all-rounder islands in the Caribbean. Some of the top hotels in the region are found here, as are some of the best beaches, all accessible to the public—there are no private beaches in Barbados. Poolside beverages are spiked with rum, distilled on the island and best learnt about at St. Nicholas Abbey, a plantation house, museum, and rum distillery. Those looking for more diverse action can find it at the heritage railway, the racing car circuit, and the Garrison Savannah, a popular horse race that takes place throughout the year. And then there are the surrounding reefs, where you can swim with turtles, snorkel with seahorses, and spy whales in winter months.

Where to stay: Sandy Lane Hotel is one of the most glamorous hotels on the island complete with a British or American country club vibe—there are three golf courses on the hotel grounds. For something more low-key, Little Good Harbour ’s rooms feel more like private cottages and its fuss-free restaurant, The Fish Post, is beloved as one of the best in Barbados. For more ideas, consult our list of the best all-inclusive resorts on the island .

Saint Lucia

Best island for: romance

The Caribbean is synonymous with honeymoons but it's St Lucia that tops them all when it comes to serving up romance. You can thank the island’s mountainous landscape for that—it’s all about a room with a view of the 2,000-foot high Piton mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the island’s calling card.

There’s adventure to be found too, like exhilarating zip lines high above the island’s rainforest canopy or mud baths in Sulphur Springs, a geothermically active basin of hot springs and fumaroles within the the dormant Qualibou volcano in Soufrière.

Where to stay: Coconut Bay is the biggest crowd pleaser on the island—all inclusive and catering to couples, families, and even wedding parties. For something more private, Ladera is an eco-lodge where rustic suites have private plunge pools. See our edit of the best resorts in St Lucia for more.

Anguilla

Best island for: beaches

In a region characterized by beautiful beaches , Anguilla has the best in the region. Partly for their mesmerizing ribbon of blue water but also because their powdery white sands invariably host only a handful of other beach-goers. There are 33 beaches in total, and while each one I’ve encountered has been memorable, the standouts to see include Cove Bay, Maundays Bay, Rendezvous Bay, and Shoal Bay.

Anguilla is also a worthy choice for its culinary scene. Refreshingly there are no chain restaurants on the island. Instead, restaurants and eateries tend to be small family-run businesses. If you visit just one, make it Tasty’s, which serves up a stellar coconut-crusted fish and marinated conch salad by Anguillan chef Dale Carty.

Where to stay: The Aurora Anguilla Resort & Golf Club is the newest shiny address on the island, with seven restaurants and bars and a fleet of private jets transporting guests to and from the property. Find more editor-vetted Anguilla hotels here .

British Virgin Islands

British Virgin Islands

Best island for: island hopping

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) territory has few chain restaurants and no large hotels or mass tourism attractions. Instead, you’ll encounter turquoise waters, lush green hillsides, and distinctive cuisine and culture across the four main islands: Anegada, Jost Van Dyke, Tortola, and Virgin Gorda.

Hopping from island to island—whether via public ferry or private catamaran—is the characteristic way to explore the BVI. On my last visit I sailed to Jost Van Dyke’s White Bay, home to casual beachfront eateries serving dangerously delicious rum cocktails and locally caught fish. Another fantastic spot is Willy T’s Floating Bar and Restaurant near Norman Island. Moored offshore, the cargo ship has been converted into an ultra-relaxed eatery.

Where to stay: Located on a broad, secluded calm-water bay on Virgin Gorda, Rosewood Little Dix Bay has 80 villas and suites each staffed with a personal butler. The Reef House is one of three restaurants and features farm-to-fork dining with fresh provisions sourced locally.

Best island for: diving

The calm waters surrounding Dominica make it one of the best diving spots in the world. The rainbow-colored seascape is best viewed at Champagne Reef, named for its bubbling waters generated by volcanic thermal springs rising from on the ocean floor. The reef also comprises plummeting cliffs, towering volcanic formations and the remains of a 17th-century Spanish shipwreck.

Another highlight is L'Abym, a dive site located on the island’s southern tip and suited to all skill levels due to Soufriere Bay’s gentle current. Underwater wonders are visible from 20 feet below the surface right down to a 1,500-foot maximum depth. An underwater wall extending its entire length gives the site its name.

Where to stay: Cabrits Resort & Spa Kempinski is the smartest place to stay on the island. All of the classic hallmarks are here—a full service spa, four swimming pools—but it’s the lush grounds, which incorporate Cabrits National Park, that make this spot memorable.

Grenada

Best island for: natural beauty

Grenada’s 133 archipelagic square miles are laced with waterfalls, hot springs and tropical rainforests across three main islands: Grenada, Petit Martinique, and Carriacou. Ringed by 45 white- and nine black-sand beaches, the hilly isles are dotted with acres of fruit and spice trees.

One-ninth of Grenada’s land mass is dedicated to national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, best seen on a guided hike of Grand Etang Forest Reserve. Sister Island Carriacou is a worthy day trip too, especially for the top-shelf diving and snorkeling.

Where to stay: Few places capture Grenada's understated magic like the Silversands Grenada resort , found at the sleepy end of the two-mile Grand Anse Beach. The biggest draw here is the 330-foot infinity pool, said to be the longest in the Caribbean, which stretches from the hotel’s entrance all the way to the sea.

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico

Best island for: history and culture

There’s a distinct energy to Puerto Rico , one that draws upon a fascinating blend of Hispanic, African, American, and Caribbean culture and history. To see it start in colonial San Juan , the second oldest European-founded city in the Americas. Head to the old town where cobblestone streets are lined with colorful Spanish buildings housing trendy bars, boutique shopping and all-night entertainment.

Hundreds of thousands of Africans arrived in Puerto Rico via forced migration in the colonial era. Their contributions to the island’s culture, art, music and cuisine live on today in Loiza, home to Puerto Rico’s largest Black population. You can witness it via the artwork on display at Samuel Lind Studio, or at the Don Rafael Cepeda School of Bomba and Plena which puts on traditional music and dance workshops.

Where to stay: Caribe Hilton is within walking distance of historic Old San Juan and the Condado entertainment district. Designed in tropical modernist style by legendary Puerto Rican firm Toro Ferrer, the grounds incorporate 17 acres of tropical landscaping as well as nine restaurants and an oceanfront pool complex. See our edit of the best hotels in Puerto Rico for more.

St. Kitts and Nevis

St. Kitts and Nevis

Best island for: visiting two islands in one trip

Lush natural beauty and historic attractions are the hallmarks of this twin-island nation. Most travelers visit both islands, as smaller Nevis is a breezy 20-minute ferry ride from larger St. Kitts. Sightseeing on St. Kitts is best done via the scenic train—the only working railway in the Caribbean—which circumnavigates the island on routes that once transported plantation sugar cane. Another highlight is the Brimstone Hill fortress, built of hand-chiseled stones by enslaved Kittitians and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stand among the fort’s ramparts and cannon while taking in panoramic views of neighboring Saba, Statia, St. Maarten, and St. Barths .

Tiny Nevis’ resplendent landscape is overlooked by 3,232-foot high Nevis Peak, located at its center and visible from virtually every point on the island. Mountainside hiking and ATV tours uncover haunting ruins of colonial-era plantations and sugar mills.

Where to stay: Hide away in one of the traditional West Indian–inspired cottages at Belle Mont Farm . As the name suggests, dining here is farm-to-table, serving up freshly foraged organic fruit and vegetables plus seafood plucked straight out of the ocean.

The top 10 destinations to travel in May 2024

top islands to visit in may

Editor’s update: This article was originally published in September 2019 and updated in July 2023.

Picking your next destination isn’t easy, but there’s a better way than spinning a big globe, closing your eyes and slamming your finger down (it’ll probably end up in the middle of the Atlantic, and wifi there is patchy, to say the least). Introducing our ultimate month-by-month destination guide : your no-fuss list of places to go, things to see and good weather to chase around the world.

Today we’re looking at where to travel in May, a balmy, sunshine-in-a-bowl sort of month, particularly for the northern hemisphere. Europe wakes up from its winter slumber, tables and vino glasses start appearing on cobbled sidewalks, beaches in the Caribbean and the Med begin to buzz, and the world puts its metaphorical feet up with a good John Grisham novel. Here’s where you should be looking for that perfect May getaway.

4. The United States

A scenic view of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA

Okay, the United States is a big place. So let’s narrow it down. If you happen to be passing through the Appalachians (and want to brave the trackside crowds), you should consider visiting the Kentucky Derby. May is also a great time to visit the Grand Canyon as the winter snow has usually cleared, the weather’s warming up and the summer hordes haven’t yet clogged all the viewing platforms. Plus, the North Rim reopens mid-May for the spring/summer season (it closes for most of winter) – always an exciting time. Weather-wise though, it’s hard to beat the north-east: Cape Cod, Pittsburgh and New England in general are all coming into bloom.

The 25 Best Islands in the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas

The best islands in the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas run the gamut from off-the-grid hideaways to ultra-luxe retreats, according to Travel + Leisure readers.

top islands to visit in may

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite islands in the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas .

The Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas are a delightful mélange of islands — sunny stalwarts with shimmering blue waters, palm-fringed shores, and ultra-luxe resorts. But for all their common denominators, there's plenty that makes each island stand out, too. Some are rustic and rugged, bereft of any modern meddling, while others are well-developed oases with lots of shops, restaurants, and hotels to choose from. And Travel + Leisure 's list of the region's best islands this year is proof of its vast and varied offerings.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated islands according to their activities and sights, natural attractions and beaches, food, friendliness, and overall value.

The British Virgin Islands dominate this year's rankings, with Jost Van Dyke (No. 9), Virgin Gorda (No. 16), and Tortola (No. 23) all making appearances. The Bahamas, too, are well-represented — the Exumas (No. 4) earned marks from one reader for the "prettiest water and beaches you will ever see," while Eleuthera (No. 24) was touted as "enchanting, pristine, and beautiful"

Several readers also raved about the beaches and turquoise waters on Anguilla (No. 3), with one calling it "paradise found." Another said, "Anguilla is my favorite spot on this earth. Nothing compares. The beaches, the people, the food, the enjoyment…total bliss."

Meanwhile, Grenada (No. 6) got a nod for its "incredibly kind people," and runner-up St. Vincent and the Grenadines (No. 2) received praise for "fantastic water excursions."

At No. 5, St. Lucia — home to the majestic Pitons, beautiful beaches, and plenty of chocolate and rum — was described as "a great spot for active travelers on a romantic escape." Another T+L reader said, "St. Lucia is an untouched gem in many ways, a very beautiful island with a delightful culture and many activities to enjoy."

But the No. 1 spot, according to this year's World's Best Awards survey, belongs to Dominica, concisely described by one reader as "stunning." Read more about Dominica, and get the full list of best islands in the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas below.

1. Dominica

Nicknamed the Nature Island, Dominica is not defined by the combo of pristine white sand and shiny resorts that's often synonymous with the Caribbean. Instead, the anything-but-average island lures eco-travelers with a jumble of rain forests, volcanoes, hot springs, thunderous waterfalls, and black-sand beaches. It has an undiscovered quality that can be rare not only in the region, but the world over. It's a dream for hikers, snorkelers, and all kinds of adventurers, but the island also offers pockets of over-the-top luxury, including this year's best resort hotel in the Caribbean — Secret Bay, tucked within the rain forest with tree-house-style villas, jaw-dropping nature views, and private plunge pools.

12 Best Caribbean Islands to Visit in 2024

Travel Advice

Updated: December 15, 2023

by Haley Parker

When choosing your next vacation, I’m sure a few things sound as appealing as a wonderful Caribbean holiday. Imagine cocktails, adventure, soft, white sandy beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and palm-fringed beaches.

But choosing can be difficult. The whole Caribbean destinations area has more than 7,000 islands, keys, and islets, so I don’t know about you, but choosing the best Caribbean islands sounds like a feat too great for man.

Narrowing down your options isn’t easy, and that’s where I come in. This is a comprehensive guide to the best islands in the Caribbean , and I promise, there’s an island or romantic vacation for everyone here.

The Best All-Inclusive Resorts in The Caribbean

Sandals Resorts (Adults-Only) and Beaches Resorts (Family-Friendly) offer the best all-inclusive packages across eight islands in the Caribbean. Explore their specials and deals available today.

My Bottom Line Up Front: The Best Island in the Caribbean

Calling the best Caribbean island winner is no easy feat, with thousands of islands to choose from. After much consideration, there can only be one: St. Lucia .

St. Lucia’ s beauty is epic. There are loads of activities for everyone – whether you visit while on your honeymoon or with your family. You won’t be bored.

My Selection Criteria for the Best Caribbean Islands

When I decided to look into the best islands in the Caribbean region, I figured a checklist or selection criteria had always worked well for me, so why not trust this process again?

To choose the best islands in this part of the world, I considered:

  • You, my dear reader. Every person is different – some want a chilled vacation where they laze and tan about on the beach, while others are into shopping, adventure, or cultural experience. My selection of the best Caribbean islands caters to all kinds of people.
  • How to get there. There are multiple flights from various U.S. cities to these islands, and where there are layovers and needing to take a ferry or boat, it’s more than worth it.
  • Where to sleep. Not everyone has the budget to stay in exclusive all-inclusive resorts, so I wanted to ensure there’s an accommodation option for every traveler – wealthy or on a budget.
  • What to do. The islands I chose offer a variety of activities to keep you and your family engaged – all vacation long.
  • The X factor. I also considered some of the lesser-known and smaller Caribbean islands for my guide. These islands offer something extra special in the uniqueness factor, ensuring they are a must-visit.

Best for: Souls that love nature

If you know a little about the Dominican Republic (not to be confused with Dominica, which is also located in the Caribbean), you’ll know it’s an international golfers hub. However, this Caribbean island offers much more than getting your “tee” on.

Turks and Caicos

Best for : Those who are into water sports and stunning beaches

The Turks and Caicos Islands are a British Overseas Territory consisting of 40-low-lying coral islands on an archipelago. Only eight of these islands and islets are inhabited.

The Provinciales, the third largest paradise island, is busy with restaurants and cocktail bars, so if peace and quiet are more your scene, escape to the other islands in the archipelago.

Combine that with the brilliant,  white sand beaches  that stretch for miles and it’s easy to see why its beauty continually captures the world.

Where to Go in Turks and Caicos

  • Cockburn Town, the capital
  • Grace Bay Beach – is considered to be the best in the world for its exceptional white sand and turquoise waters

Saba is “The Unspoiled Queen:” it has fewer than 2,000 residents and no traffic lights, cruise ships, casinos, fast-food joints, or high-rise hotels.

You can reach the quaint Caribbean island via a 12-minute flight from St. Martin or a 90-minute ferry ride.

Best for: Spices, chocolate, and waterfalls

Grenada is also called Spice Island. I can imagine the salty ocean air mixed with the wafts of nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, and other spices.

If you haven’t heard about this Caribbean island, that’s okay. It is closer to Venezuela and not a tourist hotspot, which makes this island so utterly charming. You wouldn’t have to worry about overcrowded dive spots, beaches, or nutmeg plantations.

Grenada has one main island and six smaller ones. Besides being known for its spices, Grenada is famous for its beaches, waterfalls, rainforests, chocolate, and colonial cities.

Where to Go in Grenada

  • Sandals Grenada
  • St. George
  • Grand Anse Beach

Consider These Grenada Accommodation Options

  • Montserrat

Best for: Ecotourists and nature lovers

Montserrat , called the Emerald Isle, may sound like a French Caribbean island, but it’s British. It’s one of the least visited Caribbean islands, with around 8,000 visitors annually . In 1995, a volcanic eruption destroyed a lot of the island, which is still recovering. The severely affected areas aren’t open to tourists and form part of an exclusion zone.

But that isn’t to say 10-mile-long Montserrat shouldn’t be one of the best Caribbean islands. The island sees mostly day visitors, but you can stay for longer too.

Get to Montserrat via ferry or plane from Antigua.

Where to Go in Montserrat

  • Montserrat Soufrière Hills Volcano Observatory
  • Plymouth, the former capital (the Caribbean’s Pompeii)

Consider These Montserrat Accommodation Options

  • Tropical Mansion Suites
  • Gingerbread Hill
  • Grand View Bed & Breakfast

Dominica

Best for: A quiet getaway

Dominica is like the Garden of Eden for the Caribbean because it’s so lush with rainforests, peaks and valleys, rivers (more than one for every day of the year), volcanic beaches, hot springs, and waterfalls. The undeveloped landscape will appeal to you if you love nature and are into green tourism.

Consider These Dominican Accommodation Options

  • Jungle Bay
  • Fort Young Hotel
  • Beau Rive

Guadeloupe

Best for: Tourists and adventurers

Like some other islands on this list, you may not have known about Guadeloupe’s existence. But you will surely now remember it.

The Guadeloupe island is shaped like a butterfly, with wings spread over the two main islands (the largest ones) – Grande Terre and Basse Terre. Between the islands, you’ll find a few man-made bridges.

Grande Terre is the more touristy of the two islands, while Basse Terre is the wilder one.

Where to Go in Guadeloupe

  • Pointe-à-Pitre, the largest city
  • Anse des Cayes

  • Dive at one of the many spots on Basse Terre

Consider These Guadeloupe Accommodation Options

  • Marco Polo Resort
  • Hotel Bakoua Les Trois Ilets
  • Le Jardin Malanga
  • La Creole Beach Hotel & Spa

Best for: Sampling Curaçao

I’d never have guessed that Curaçao is part of the Netherlands; it’s such a Spanish-sounding name! The Caribbean island is famous for Curaçao since it’s the birthplace of this delicious orange-flavored liqueur. The Lahara orange peels are used to make the liqueur, and it’s indigenous to the island.

Curaçao is blessed with great weather all year round: perfect temperatures, sunny days, and cool trade winds.

Where to Go in Curaçao

  • Chobolobo Distillery (where Curaçao is made)
  • Willemstad , the capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Shete Boka National Park

  • Playa Lagun

Weather, crowds, & prices for may.

You can plan a trip to Hawaii for any time of the year. However, if you are looking for one of the better times to travel to the islands, May is right up there as the perfect month. Hawaii Weather in May

Spring is often avoided for travel as people associate it with the time of year many destinations see an increase in rain. That’s not so in Hawaii. Hawaii in spring is ideal because you miss the rainy season, which takes place in the winter. You will also start to see a rise in temperature. In May, the average rises to a very comfortable 80 to 85 F range. Better yet, where April sees evening temperatures dipping into the 60s, May brings warm evenings in the low 70s. With this ideal beach weather , you can be sure to add basking in the sun and taking dips in the ocean to your list of things to do.

May has the odd showers, but that’s mostly at night. As with all tropical areas, you can see sporadic bursts of rain showers, but they won’t last long enough to disrupt your fun. Traveling in May makes choosing a place to stay easier. In the rainy weather, a visit to the leeward side of the islands is advised. However, because rain is less of a concern in May, you’ll have your pick of destinations.

If you plan on touring in the mountains or visiting the summit of volcanoes, you can still see some dips on the thermometer. You might need a light jacket and full-length pants. All in all, you can’t choose a better time to visit Hawaii than May when it comes to weather.

Hawaii Crowds in May

May sits in second place as the least crowded time of the year to visit Hawaii. That said, two times of the month tend to get more crowded, although not unbearably so.

The first week of May sees an upswing in vacationers visiting from Japan. This month is a favorite travel time as Japan is celebrating a holiday season called Golden Week. Waikiki tends to see most of the crowds during this period.

Memorial Day weekend is another holiday that can see many Hawaiian destinations get a little busier. Either way, you will not find it difficult to visit the many attractions and events in Hawaii even in the peak weeks of May.

Hawaii Costs in May

Hawaiian hotel rates are ideal in May as they are sitting lower than the yearly average of $340/night. Instead, you might see prices dipping to as low as $310. This rate tends to rise over the Memorial Day weekend but not by much. Airfares fluctuate quite a bit throughout the year which makes it harder to calculate what you can expect to pay. As with hotel rates, you can expect to pay more if you’re traveling for the Memorial Day weekend. Other than that, you can search online to find the best prices.

Hawaii Events & Highlights in May

May 1st is Lei Day in Hawaii. Celebrations and events take place throughout the communities and offer you a chance to experience the Hawaiian culture first hand. Each area will have its celebrations from lei-making competitions to hula dancing and luaus to royal court processions. Other events that commonly take place in May throughout the islands include:

Celebrate the joys of SPAM in Waikiki and discover the secret recipes and dishes made with this favorite food.

Enjoy the unique music of Hawaii at the month-long celebration, Mele Mei.

Celebrate the many Memorial Day events in Oahu, including the Lantern Floating Festival .

Whether you choose to participate or attend as a spectator, the Kauai World Challenge Canoe Race is a 36-mile coastal relay race held every year

Maui Onion Festival

May offers an ideal time to visit the beautiful islands of Hawaii. With near-perfect weather conditions, fewer crowds, and affordable hotel rates, you will discover the magic of this Pacific paradise in the spring.

With hundreds of islands, the Caribbean offers an array of destinations for travelers seeking a vacation with sand, sun, and crystal clear waters. Located just southeast of the U.S., it’s relatively easy to get to many Caribbean destinations from numerous U.S. hubs.

From family-friendly islands to honeymoon destinations, affordable escapes, and seasonal options, these are the best islands to visit in the Caribbean.

A Caribbean vacation offers travelers a fun-in-the-sun getaway, but there’s also so much more to get out of a Caribbean vacation. Caribbean vacationers can explore history, culture, cuisine, adventure, and incredible natural landscapes, such as volcanoes, waterfalls, bioluminescent bays, and unique flora and fauna.

It’s easy to get to the Caribbean from many U.S. destinations and airports, and U.S. travelers don’t have to worry about jet lag like they would when visiting islands like Fiji or Bali.

Divers and snorkelers may find the Caribbean especially enticing, as it’s home to some of the most exotic marine life in the world, as well as sea turtles and whales. The islands are also known for having friendly and welcoming locals, as well as iconic Carnival celebrations and festivals throughout the year.

Although the Caribbean islands have a hot and tropical climate year-round, it’s important to understand that most destinations have 2 main seasons: rainy and dry. The dry season from December to May is usually when visitors can enjoy the best weather. The rainy season is from June to November and includes the Atlantic hurricane season. The months of the edges of each of these seasons are considered the shoulder seasons.

Visiting during the rainy or shoulder season may offer better deals on airfare, activities, and hotels. Rainy season could mean sunny skies most of the day with an occasional tropical rain shower, or it could bring a hurricane.

These Are the 12 Best Caribbean Islands To Visit

The Caribbean is divided into 3 groups: The Bahamas, Greater Antilles, and Lesser Antilles . Although The Bahamas aren’t technically in the Caribbean Sea, these islands are still considered part of CARICOM, the Caribbean Community. Also, Turks and Caicos is part of the Lucayan Archipelago alongside The Bahamas.

However, most travelers aren’t too particular about such distinctions, so we’ve included both The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos in our roundup. After all, these islands offer what most Caribbean travelers are seeking, such as crystal clear waters and fine white sands.

Read on to learn about the best places to visit in the Caribbean and what type of traveler each island caters to, as well as the best Caribbean islands to visit by season and month.

Jamaica Beach Shack

Excepting Jamaica’s luxurious Sandals resorts, the island can be a rather affordable destination for travelers who want a budget Caribbean vacation . Low-cost air carrier Spirit offers cheap flights from Fort Lauderdale (FLL) or flights with a layover in FLL from hubs including Chicago (ORD) or Dallas (DFW) for less than $280 round trip on select winter dates.

A quick search on Booking.com revealed many hotels under $100 per night, such as the charming Westender Inn , an oceanfront property with a pool and garden. For under $200 per night, you can lounge on the crystalline sands of the Sand and Tan Beach Hotel in Ocho Rios or enjoy grand sea views at the Hotel Grand A View .

Once in Jamaica, there are plenty of affordable activities to do during your stay. Lounge on the blissful Seven Mile Beach (which, despite its name, is actually only 4 miles long), or pop into a reggae bar to listen to the locals jam from your hammock.

If you’re really in the market for an affordable escape, use your points and miles to fly to the Caribbean — we detail the best ways to do so.

Family on a beach in Bahamas

From pirates to marine life to endless fun in the sun, The Bahamas offers everything a family with young children, teens, or even older adults could ever want. The massive resort complex Atlantis on Paradise Island, home to 5 different hotels, offers family-friendly services like stroller rentals, plus kids 6 and under eat free. There’s also an on-site water park and kids’ club activities. Teens will love the Atlantis underwater video arcade and the teen-only nightclub.

Meanwhile, Nassau is one of the best Caribbean islands for kids, thanks to its interactive Pirates of Nassau Museum , a fit for kids of all ages. You can get up close and personal with wildlife, such as flamingoes at Ardastra Gardens , a wildlife center that also features pigs, monkeys, and other animals. And it’s not just the most developed islands in The Bahamas that cater to kids. The serene stretches of soft sands and calm waters on islands like Exuma or the Abacos are some of the best Caribbean Islands to visit with toddlers, ideal for little kids to run, play, and shout to their hearts’ content.

Sanctuary Cap Cana Marriott All Inclusive

One of the best Caribbean Islands to visit for all-inclusive hotels is the Dominican Republic , thanks to resort areas like Punta Cana, La Romana, and Puerta Plata, all home to numerous resorts that offer all-inclusive packages.

Punta Cana has endless options for all-inclusive travelers , whether you’re on your honeymoon or on the hunt for a family-friendly all-inclusive resort. Choose from the luxury of the Sanctuary Cap Cana (a Marriott resort), the contemporary, family-friendly Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana (home to a water park), and the Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana (adults only), plus 2 new Hyatt Sunscape Resorts opening in 2024 and an all-inclusive, adults-only W Punta Cana coming in 2025 (one of the first all-inclusive W properties in the world).

If you’re hoping to book a Hyatt resort in the Dominican Republic for your next Caribbean getaway, you can save 40% when booking by December 13, 2023 .

What does all-inclusive mean ? Find out how to get your money’s worth at an all-inclusive hotel in our detailed article.

Gorgeous Scilly Cay

Anguilla is known as one of the friendliest islands in the Caribbean , which means visiting with friends will be lots of fun. You can interact with locals at the beach parties of Sandy Ground Beach and enjoy participating in the local culture, including Anguilla’s Carnival celebrations, which happen each summer and include boat races, street jams, and parades. The U.S. State Department has also named Anguilla one of the safest Caribbean islands ( marked as a Level 1 ) to visit, so you and your friends should be able to frolic freely without worry.

Anguilla has quite a bit of diversity in what to do on your vacation. Of course, there are those stunning Caribbean beaches, like the picture-perfect Shoal Bay or the pinkish-hued sunsets of Mead Bay. Friends can also hit up art galleries, visit museums, go snorkeling or diving, birdwatch, and share a meal on the famous island of Scilly Cay, a tiny island home to the Gorgeous Scilly Cay Restaurant , where you can dine on local grilled lobster or Caribbean-inspired surf and turf.

St. Lucia

One of the best Caribbean islands for a honeymoon , St. Lucia’s breathtaking scenery, gorgeous hotels, and impressive natural wonders make it the perfect Caribbean island to visit as a couple . Visitors can admire the island’s emblematic backdrop, the moss-covered Piton Mountains that seem to rise directly out of the sea. Choose from world-class resorts such as Jade Mountain , home to its own chocolate farm and laboratory, and Hyatt’s all-inclusive Zoetry Marigot Bay , flanked with verdant foliage.

Pigeon Island National Park is one of the best spots on the island for couples who want to experience history, a wooded islet home to former British forts. Nature buffs should explore the cascading waterfalls, dense rainforest, and sulfur springs near Soufrière.

The only thing better than a honeymoon in St. Lucia is a free one. You can redeem World of Hyatt points to stay at Hyatt’s AMR Collection properties across the Caribbean. To stock up on Hyatt points, apply for The World of Hyatt Credit Card or earn flexible points that can transfer to the World of Hyatt program with a card such as the  Chase Sapphire Reserve ®  or  Chase Sapphire Preferred ®  Card .

Antigua Beach

The Caribbean is indeed known for having some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. But not every island is created equal, and some have more beaches and better beaches than other destinations. Antigua wins for quantity when it comes to beaches, with around 365 different sandy stretches — you could spend a year there and never go to the same beach twice!

However, the large number of beaches can make it difficult to decide which ones to visit, especially if your trip is just a week long and not a year. We recommend Half Moon Bay, a crescent-shaped stretch of sand with a reef for snorkeling. Ffryes Beach is the one to visit for photos of sparkling sands and transparent waters, especially beautiful around sunset.

Cayman Islands

Between the 3 different Cayman Islands, first-time travelers can get a true taste of what a Caribbean vacation is all about. Grand Cayman, the largest and most popular of the 3, is the perfect place to start , offering visitors a more curated, traditional resort stay and access to perfect Caribbean sands and waters, as well as plenty of dining, amenities, and activities. We love the Kimpton Seafire Resort & Spa , an IHG resort located directly on the famous Seven Mile Beach.

Those looking for something more off-the-beaten-path will also find it in Cayman on the other 2 smaller islands: Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Both of these islands are known for offering incredible marine life accessible to snorkelers and divers, plenty of solitude, and a general far-flung, deserted island feel.

BVI Tortola

Some Caribbean islands are safer than others, and solo visitors should feel comfortable heading to the British Virgin Islands : Tortola, Anegada, Virgin Gorda, and Jost Van Dyke — plus more than 50 other tiny islands and cays. It holds the lowest travel safety advisory rating (a 1) from the U.S. State Department . This means travelers should exercise normal caution.

Often referred to as BVI, these islands offer comfortable and luxurious resorts like the Rosewood Little Dix Bay or Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina (unfortunately, no longer affiliated with Marriott) for those that want to relax in style. There are also plenty of secluded beaches and hidden spots to hide away from more mainstream tourism.

Solo travelers who want to make new friends should head to Cane Garden Bay on Tortola, a picturesque stretch of white sands that features beach bars and hotels with live music, happy hours, and other activities. Another must-see is The Baths in Virgin Gorda, a mix of sea boulders, hidden coves, and white sands accessible by land or boat. Consider heading there first thing in the morning or later in the day to beat the day trippers. For a bit more solitude, consider Anegada, a quieter island known for its wildlife and peaceful beaches.

Don’t have a passport but really want to visit the Caribbean? You can visit the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI), which became U.S. territories in 1917: St. John, St. Croix, and St. Thomas.

Eden Rock

St. Barts isn’t the easiest Caribbean island to access, which is why high-profile celebrities and athletes often vacation there to get away from the general public and shutter-happy paparazzi. An overseas territory of France, the island oozes French sophistication combined with Caribbean glamour.

Besides the many exclusive luxury hotels, such as   Eden Rock , a seafront property that offers sophisticated amenities like yacht rentals, and the Rosewood Le Guanahani , which feels intimate and secluded, thanks to its 66 rooms and suites, it’s also a paradise for shoppers. Thanks to duty-free status, you’ll pay a lot less tax on luxury goods on the island.

St. Kitts

While the 2 islands of St. Kitts and Nevis boast blissful beaches, lush rainforest, and coveted Caribbean waters, the destination is also ideal for those who want to understand more about the culture of the Caribbean . St. Kitts was Great Britain’s first settlement in the Caribbean. Nevis featured the region’s first hotel, the Bath Hotel, which dates back to the 18th century. These days, when it comes to hotels, we favor the elevated Park Hyatt St. Kitts Christophe Harbour .

Learn more about the island’s history at the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Animal lovers may also enjoy the fact that this island is home to hundreds of free-roaming vervet monkeys. Just don’t get too close to them! Between the months of June and September, visitors can spot 3 different species of turtles hatching: the hawksbill, the leatherback, and the green turtle.

The pool at the InterContinental Dominica

Known as the nature hub of the Caribbean, Dominica’s viridescent landscape is home to extensive rainforests, tree-covered mountains, dramatic gorges, inviting freshwater lakes and hot springs, and even active volcanoes. The island’s landscape is decidedly unique, from the bubbling saltwater rising up from the sea floor at Champagne Beach to the sulfur springs of Wotten Waven, rumored to have healing properties.

With 3 national parks on the island, there’s much to do in the way of hiking, whether it be to reach a secret waterfall, wander through a cloud forest, or just enjoy dramatic views of the island’s memorable landscape. You can enjoy some of the island’s best natural wonders right from the hotel if you stay at the   InterContinental Dominica Cabrits Resort & Spa , which overlooks the Caribbean Sea and the greenery and volcano of  Cabrits National Park .

Grace Bay

Turks and Caicos has some of the very best beaches in the Caribbean, with the whitest, finest sand, and clearest, most enticing waters. Although some may argue that Turks and Caicos isn’t really a part of the Caribbean, we’re including them in this roundup. With 40+ different islands, this archipelago has plenty of sand to go around — and all beaches are public, so you can visit as many as you’d like.

Grace Bay is probably the most famous beach on the islands, often snagging the top spot on best beach lists. It’s home to a reef system, and a portion of it is part of the Princess Alexandra National Park . Long Bay Beach’s winds are ideal for kiteboarders, while families should head to the lagoon waters of Half Moon Bay. AvGeeks should head to Pine Cay Beach, where you can feel the breeze from landing airplanes landing at and taking off from the Pine Cay Airstrip , though definitely don’t expect to spot any 747s.

Grenada

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June until the end of November, so winter and spring are the best times to visit almost any of the Caribbean Islands if you’re looking for sunny, dry weather .

However, with peak season comes peak prices and high crowds, so if you’re visiting during prime time, you might want to consider one of the more affordable Caribbean islands (Jamaica or Dominica) to stay within budget, or one of the more obscure Caribbean islands (Grenada or St. Vincent and the Grenadines) to have a crowd-free Caribbean winter escape.

Curacao

The ABC islands of Aruba , Bonaire, and Curaçao sit outside of the Atlantic hurricane belt , so they’re less susceptible to major or damaging storms. These are the best places to visit if you’d like to escape to the Caribbean in the summer, which coincides with hurricane season.

The best southern Caribbean islands to visit include St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados, and Grenada, as well as Trinidad and Tobago . These islands are closer to Latin America and are usually less likely to get hit by a hurricane, though they’ve all seen their fair share of intense tropical storms.

Just remember, there are no guarantees when it comes to nature, so if you want to minimize the risk of hurricanes or other tropical storms, visit the Caribbean during the dry season (December to May). The highest risk of hurricanes is from August to October, so you may want to consider avoiding those months in the Caribbean if you’re worried about bad weather.

If you visit the Caribbean during the summer months, make sure to get travel insurance . Don’t forget that many popular credit cards come with travel insurance — we detail some of the best in our guide.

Best Caribbean Islands To Visit by Month

Beyond just hurricanes and budget, there are certain times of year when it’s ideal to visit specific Caribbean islands. From underwater visibility to whale migrations to iconic cultural celebrations, these are the best islands to visit in the Caribbean each month.

Grenada sailing

Foodies should head to the Cayman Islands in January for the Cayman Cookout , which brings together revered chefs, mixologists, and spirits connoisseurs from around the world (January 9 to 15, 2024). This year’s event also includes a musical performance from the Goo Goo Dolls.

Grenada is another island to visit in January (and the beginning of February), as the destination hosts Grenada Sailing Week . The event (January 28 to February 2, 2024) consists of sailing races and lots of parties back on dry land.

January is one of the sunniest and driest months in the Caribbean, so you’ll likely have excellent weather on all of the islands. Just book ahead to get the best prices, and know that you may encounter crowds this month and in the months following, especially around spring break .

Trinidad and Tobago Carnival

It’s prime sperm whale season throughout the Caribbean, but especially in Dominica between November and March. Head out on a boat around areas like Scotts Head, Roseau, Layou, and Point Round to admire these gentle giants — just make sure not to lure the animals. You may also spot spotted and spinner dolphins.

For those that want an iconic Carnival experience outside of Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival event (February 12 to 13, 2024) is famous worldwide, featuring parades, partying, and some of the most elaborate costumes you may have ever seen.

Finally, celebrate the leap year and welcome in the month of March with the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta (February 29 to March 3, 2024), home to 4 days of sailing and lots of cuisine and Heineken beer.

Diving in Bonaire

March is another perfect month in the Caribbean, with smooth seas for sailing and excellent visibility for diving and snorkeling. Head to Antigua for the Superyacht Challenge (March 11 to 17, 2024) to see boats race for the win.

Or, focus on the delights of the underwater world, diving and snorkeling around the Turks and Caicos Barrier Reef , Grenada’s Molinere Bay  Underwater Sculpture Park , or Bonaire, where the capital of the island, Kralendijk, translates to coral reef.

Cuba trumpet player

April brings continued sunshine to the Caribbean, as well as the BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival (April 1 to 7, 2024), home to sailing and lots of fun.

For a unique Caribbean experience, let’s not forget about Cuba , a country a few hundred miles away from Florida. April brings the island’s Afro Cuban Dance Festival (March 30 to April 9, 2024) to Havana. U.S. citizens can travel to Cuba if they meet one of the 12 categories of travel set by the U.S. government , which include things like educational activities, support for Cuban people, public performances, and workshops.

Antigua Sailing Week

May is an excellent month for travelers looking for the best Caribbean islands to visit on a budget — although there’s just slightly more rainfall, the prices are usually more affordable, and the crowds start to dissipate. It’s the perfect time to visit St. Lucia thanks to the St. Lucia Jazz and Arts Festiva l (April 30 to May 9), which blends jazz, blues, R&B, swing, calypso, and Latin music with cuisine, dance, craft markets, and more.

This month also brings one of Antigua’s most notable events: Antigua Sailing Week (April 27 to May 3, 2024).

Bahamas

As the Atlantic hurricane season gets its start, the ABC islands, which have more stable and drier weather, become more popular as they reside outside the Atlantic hurricane belt. This is why heading to Bonaire’s Rum Week (June 12 to 17, 2024) is the optimal plan for travelers who want a trip focusing on Caribbean spirits, cigars, cuisine, and sunshine.

Pineapple lovers should travel to The Bahamas for The Bahamas Pineapple Festival (June 7 to 8, 2024). Here, you can chow down on this flavorful fruit alongside other Bahamian desserts and beverages.

Concerned about the possibility of a hurricane? Consider getting one of these cancel for any reason travel insurance policies .

Carnival

July is a month for celebration in the Caribbean . Enjoy Carnival celebrations in St. Vincent and the Grenadines ( Vincy Mas , July 4 to 10, 2024), St. Lucia (July 10 to 17, 2024), and Antigua (July 26 to August 6, 2024).

St. Kitts and Nevis celebrates Restaurant Week (July 13 to 23, 2023), where restaurants around the island will offer special menus around a theme ingredient. The upcoming festival’s ingredient is pineapple.

Finally, Jamaica gets festive with its Reggae Sumfest (July 16 to 22, 2024), featuring nonstop concerts and events.

Tortola on BVI

Brave the heat and humidity to attend Anguilla’s Summer Fest (August 1 to 11, 2024) , celebrating the 50th anniversary of the island’s Carnival history. Events include the Miss Anguilla competition, boat races, concerts, parades, and more.

Both the British Virgin Islands and St. Kitts and Nevis honor their Emancipation Days in August. To celebrate, these destinations feature several days of music, parties, and more.

Hurricane season lasts about half the year. However, the most common time for cyclone activity is around September 10, according to the National Hurricane Center. Still, that doesn’t mean storms will definitely occur around that time. If you’re willing to brave the possibility of hazardous weather (most often intermixed with plenty of sunshine), September happens to be prime turtle-hatching season on many Caribbean islands . Spot them on islands such as Aruba, St. Kitts and Nevis, The Grenadines, and even in Mexico, Florida, and Puerto Rico , too.

Remember, even during the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, the ABC islands often see much less inclement weather , so October is a good time to visit.

If you’re willing to brave a bit of rain, visit St. Lucia, which celebrates its Creole Heritage Month in October. Festivities begin October 1 with Oktoberfest and end on the last Sunday in October to celebrate Creole Day. Or, vacation in Barbados , known as the birthplace of rum. The island celebrates its Food and Rum Festival each October.

Cayman Islands Pirates Week Festival

November welcomes the final month of hurricane season, so you may see clear skies as the end of the month approaches. Families and adults alike can celebrate at the Pirates Fest in the Cayman Islands . It’s celebrated on all 3 islands (Little Cayman, November 3 to 5, 2023; Grand Cayman, November 9 to 19, 2023; and Cayman Brac, November 24 to 26, 2023). The merriment includes parties, cultural events, turtle releases, costumes, dancing, and plenty of pirate fun.

Those looking for a slightly higher-brow experience than “Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum” can find it in St. Bart’s. The annual St. Barth’s Gourmet Festival (November 7 to 12, 2023) welcomes top chefs and hungry foodies from around the world.

Christmas beach

Spending the holidays in the Caribbean is the ideal winter getaway. The weather starts improving, so those in search of winter sun will find warm and drier conditions in nearly all of the Caribbean Islands . However, we suggest a visit to The Bahamas, where 16 of the islands celebrate Junkanoo , which includes dancing, music, and elaborate costumes. The festival occurs on the day after Christmas annually.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Virgin Island of St. Croix celebrates the Crucian Christmas Carnival , which begins in December and culminates on Kings Day, which is January 6.

If the beach and sunshine don’t inspire you around the holidays, consider a trip to Europe, home to some of the world’s best Christmas markets , instead.

With so many islands in the Caribbean, it’s easy to find the right one for you . Whether you’re on a budget, looking for the best beaches, or want to travel in a specific month or season, the wide range of Caribbean islands offers something for every traveler.

The 8 best places to visit in the Caribbean

Not all Caribbean islands are the same. Here's how to find the right one for you © Roberto Moiola / Sysaworld / Getty Images

The ultimate tropical getaway, the Caribbean conjures images of palm-fringed beaches, rum-fueled dancing and lush jungle excursions. Pick any of the 700-odd islands that form an arc between Florida and Venezuela  and you’ll get all these things and more.

Rich in African culture brought to the region by the trade of enslaved people, the islands are also steeped variously in British, Spanish, French and Dutch heritage, making the Caribbean one of the most culturally diverse places on the planet and lending each island its own idiosyncrasies.

Whether you’re looking for a party city or a family-friendly destination, we’ll help you decide where to go. Here are the eight best places to visit in the Caribbean.

Best for beaches

Boasting a beach for each day of the year, low-lying Antigua in the Leeward Islands delivers a multitude of postcard-perfect beaches, with coral reefs just a flipper-kick from shore. Depending on where you are, the hue shifts from brilliant white through rose gold to cotton candy pink.

Choose between a beach lined with lively bars blaring out soca tunes, or a near-deserted strip of sand where it’ll be just you and the odd pelican diving for fish.

If you want to join picnicking locals, head to Jolly Beach on the west coast; for solitude, try Half Moon Bay in the southeast, and for tree-shaded golden sands, head to Pigeon Beach on the edge of Falmouth Harbor.

The World Heritage Twin Pitons are framed by sunlit flowers in the early morning. Focus on flowers, with Pitons fading into background.

2. The Pitons, St Lucia

Best for hiking

These iconic twin peaks are St Lucia ’s most photographed attraction, which isn't surprising, as they tower more than half a mile above sea level and can be viewed from as far north as the capital Castries.

Gros Piton, the largest of the peaks, is the one to scale (Petit Piton has near-vertical slabs and climbing is restricted). Start at sunrise and you’ll be at the top before the heat of the midday sun. January, February and March are great months to visit because the soil will be dry.

Wake to an up-close view of these verdant volcanic plugs by staying at Ladera Resort , which offers rooms that are completely open to the rainforest.

Planning tip: Book a guide from Gros Piton Tour Guides Association  and you’ll not only make it to the summit without losing the path, but you'll also learn the history of Fond Gens Libre, a settlement that played an important role in the 1748 slave rebellion (and the hike's starting point), and find out about the flora and fauna of the rainforest you pass through.

3. Habana Vieja, Cuba

Best old town

The most populated and most visited city in Cuba and one of the best cities in the Caribbean, beguiling Havana is associated with Hemingway and Cadillacs, music-filled theaters and grand rum bars.

The Havana you’re looking for is the old town, known in Spanish as Habana Vieja , where you can wander narrow streets, admire the architecture of restored Spanish buildings, stop to listen to a street-side salsa or son band and dip in and out of the various museums, churches and palaces that make up this Unesco World Heritage Site.

The city hums in the day, but at night it’s all-singing, all-dancing. To soak up the vibe head to Plaza Vieja , pull up a chair on the terrace of one of the many bars and cafes and be entertained by roving bands.

Then head to the 200-year-old bar El Floridita , where Ernest Hemingway famously knocked back daiquiris after a day at the typewriter.

4. Bonaire Marine Park

Best for snorkeling

Bonaire is the B in the Dutch ABC islands and lies to the east of Aruba and Curaçao, just off the coast of Venezuela in the southern Caribbean. Something of a trailblazer, the island turned its entire coastline – and that of neighboring Klein Bonaire – into a 6400-acre marine park in the late 1970s.

The island has about 90 dive and snorkel sites where you can explore the protected underwater world , mostly situated among the sheltered coral reefs off the west coast. This is a good place to visit in July, because it is south of the hurricane belt.

Planning tip: Divers and snorkelers must pay the marine park nature fee, which is $25 for non-scuba visitors and $45 for scuba divers, and is valid for a year. You can purchase it directly from the National Parks Foundation .

5. The Grenadines

Best for sailing

An archipelago stretching 60 miles from St Vincent in the south to Grenada in the north, the Grenadines  feel remote and largely untouched by tourism.

With the challenge of occasional strong Atlantic winds and the reward of calm waters on deserted beaches (minus the odd rum shack), this is some of the best sailing in the world for the competent sailor. Passages between the islands only take an hour or two, so you’ll get plenty of downtime too.

Planning tip: This is a good place to visit in July, August, September or October, because it’s south of the hurricane belt. Start your charter in St Vincent and finish in Grenada for an easier sail. Easterly trade winds make it harder to sail north up the chain.

6. Inagua, The Bahamas

Best for wildlife lovers

The southernmost island group in the Bahamas is made up of two islands. Despite its name, Great Inagua only has a population of about 1200 people, but its flamingo population exceeds 80,000 birds, flocking around aptly named Lake Rosa. And Little Inagua is the largest uninhabited island in the Caribbean, becoming a national park in 2002.

These remote islands are a haven for ecotourism, and visitors come to see the flamingos, parrots, pelicans and 140 other native and migratory birds that can be spotted here.

Planning tip: Travel by mail boat from Nassau , which is 320 miles northwest, or fly into Great Inagua airport. To visit Little Inagua, a nesting ground for endangered sea turtles, you’ll need to ask a fisherman to take you by boat. The best time to see the turtles hatching is between August and September.

Tourist learning to windsurf at a busy Punta Cana beach

7. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Best for families

The glut of family-friendly hotels that hug the “coconut coast” on the east of the Dominican Republic make this a fun-filled place to go if you’re looking for an easy family holiday in the Caribbean.

The child-free may want to actively avoid the area, but if it’s an all-inclusive hotel with a waterslide you’re after, then you’ll find no shortage among the popular brands jostling for attention.

Whether you want five-star luxury, such as that found at Bahia Principe Fantasia Punta Cana , which has a fairytale palace astride the swimming pool, or the recognizable cartoon characters found at the Nickelodeon resort , you’ll find a hotel to please the whole family.

8. San Juan, Puerto Rico

Best for partying

Wherever you are on the island of Puerto Rico you’re never more than a couple of hours by car from San Juan , the island’s capital. This means there’s no excuse not to spend at least one night of your holiday partying Puerto Rico style.

A night out in San Juan is a raucous affair, generally centered around the old town, which has the highest concentration of bars and clubs.

You’ll find piña coladas served until the early hours, but not in La Factoria , which is taking the island’s mixology to the next level (and often features on lists of best bars). Here you can try signature cocktails such as the lavender mule, made with ginger tea, lavender cordial and Ketel One vodka.

For a street-party vibe, head to La Placita de Santurce , which by day is the location of the fruit and veg market and by night filled with the sounds of salsa.

This is one of the best places to visit in the Caribbean in December or early January because the Christmas period (from December 15 to January 6) is even more of a party than usual.

Best Greek Islands In May (And Why Mykonos Isn’t Listed)

Which Greek islands are the best to visit in May? Here, we look at what's good, what's not, and give you some inside tips.

Best Greek islands to take a holiday in May

Traveling to Greece in May

May can be a good month to visit Greece, as there aren't so many tourists and the weather is just starting to warm up. There are a few caveats which you should probably be aware of though.

In this guide, I want to line up your expectations with a little reality so you can pick which Greek island to visit in May!

Visiting Greek islands in May

Greek Islands May Weather

Let's start by talking about what weather you can expect in May. Currently, I am writing this guide in Rhodes , one of the most southerly islands in Greece. Theoretically speaking, if anywhere in Greece has good weather in May it should be Rhodes!

And, it's partially true. The sky is clear blue outside, the sun is shining, and it's a lot warmer than the rest of Northern Europe.

It isn't perfect though. Right now, we have very strong winds meaning that even with the sun shining it can be a little chilly. And for me personally, it's too cold to swim in the sea!

The last couple of days were overcast, and while there was very little rain, we did get some. Right at the beginning of the month, we had great weather for a kayaking trip along the Rhodes coast.

What does all this mean?

Bottom line: While you might get sunny weather, you can't entirely plan for a beach holiday on the Greek islands in May. It's simply not reliable enough. This means that when it comes to choosing a Greek island in May, you'll want to think about other activities you can do when the beautiful beaches are not so appealing to be on.

Hottest Greek islands To Go In May

The southern Dodecanese islands and Crete are likely to have the warmest weather if you're planning island hopping in May. The Cyclades islands and Ionian islands are likely still a little fresh for sea swimming, but will have pleasant enough weather all the same.

Are the Greek islands still closed in May?

Many people don't realise that the tourism industry all but closes down on the islands in the winter months. While the main tourist hubs might have some establishments open, the smaller villages are often closed until May.

As a result, May is a crossover month. Some places will be open (such as tavernas, hotels, shops etc), but others will be getting themselves ready by adding new paint, stocking up etc.

Bottom line: The Greek islands are not really a year round destination. You shouldn't expect everywhere to be open on the islands in May. Some tourist resorts which are party central in August may be ghost towns at the start of May!

Why May isn't a great time to go to Mykonos

Mykonos is one of the most popular Greek islands to visit. Images of beach parties and crazy nightlife have sold the island in the minds of many as a premier destination.

This means that people might be tempted to go to Mykonos in May. It kind of makes sense, I mean it's shoulder season, there's far fewer tourists, and of course it's cheaper!

Vanessa in Mykonos

The thing is though, very few nightclubs will be open, the beaches and sea might be too chilly to enjoy comfortably, and there's not a lot going on.

In my opinion, May can be a great time to experience Mykonos before the crowds arrive, especially if you want to go to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Delos island .

mosaic at delos in greece

Exploring the narrow streets of Mykonos Town is certainly more enjoyable without the summer crowds! If you want lively parties and beach life though, you won't really find it in May and you'll probably be disappointed.

What are the best Greek islands to visit in May?

Hopefully, I've explained well enough that you can't really expect reliable beach weather in May, and that party destinations such as Mykonos and Ios won't have many parties!

So, it's best to look at islands that have more to offer than just beaches and bars. Fortunately, Greece has dozens of them! Here's my choices of which Greek islands offer a good mix that makes them a good holiday destination in May.

After saying that Mykonos is not such a great island to visit in May, you might be surprised to see I've listed another Cycladic island to travel to in May instead.

The reason, is that Santorini and Mykonos are two very different islands . For example, no one really visits Santorini for the beaches , as they aren't that great when compared to those of other Greek islands. No one is really going to Santorini for the party scene either.

Is May a good time to visit Santorini

Instead, people who visit Santorini are doing so to experience the incredible Caldera views, the amazing sunsets, the fascinating history and to walk around Oia.

I also highly recommend the hike from Fira to Oia . All this can be done in May, and with fewer other visitors that the peak season months, it's a lot more enjoyable.

Walking from Fira to Oia in Santorini

Of course, the weather in Santorini in May isn't as good as the summer months, and you can expect much cooler evenings (needing a light jacket!) than you might realize.

The main benefits though, are the cheaper prices, less crowds, no queues for and more availability of hotel rooms at sensible prices.

Rhodes in the Dodecanese is one of the best Greek islands to visit in May. It's a big island with lots to see and do, meaning if the weather is poor when you go, you'll always be able to find some activity to do to fill your days.

Visiting Rhodes island in the Dodecanese of Greece

Rhodes Old Town is a great place to walk around, with plenty of medieval architecture and history to explore. The Palace of the Grand Master is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island, and definitely worth visiting!

The beaches around Rhodes are some of the best in Greece too, so if the forecast is good, you'll be able to get tanned early on in the year. Try Anthony Quinn Bay for some relaxing swim if the water is warm enough in May.

The Greek island of Rhodes in May

Too cold to swim? Why not try a kayaking tour in Rhodes instead. It was great fun!

Kayaking in Rhodes in May

Rhodes is one of the most popular destinations in the Dodecanese islands of Greece. If you're visiting in May, I'd suggest locating yourself in Rhodes town, as you'll be able to explore the medieval castle, and have easy access to other parts of the island using public transport or car hire.

Related: Best towns to visit in Greece

The largest island in Greece never closes down, and there is always something to do in May! Take you pick from archaeological sites, hiking trails, fishing villages, and mountain villages when you go to Crete .

The Matala Caves in Crete always remind me of somewhere the Flintstones might live

Crete also has some of the best beaches in Greece, with the added bonus they are generally warmer than other parts of the country at that time of year. The average temperature in Crete in May is a balmy 23 degrees Celsius!

Crete also has a bustling nightlife, so if you're looking for some late-night fun in May, this island can provide. You'll find something almost all night long too if you're staying in Heraklion ! One note though – the Malia /Stalis area is likely to be very sleepy has it might not have opened yet.

The Palace of Knossos in Crete

Overall, Crete provides a great mix of things to do that are suitable for pretty much any traveler, whether it's their first trip to Greece or their fiftieth!

The Ionian islands are typically colder and a little rainier than other island groups, but you shouldn't discount Corfu in May. It's a beautiful island that has plenty to offer visitors, and the weather is often good enough to enjoy the beaches too.

Corfu town is a great place to walk around, with its Venetian architecture and lively cafes and bars. If you want to explore further afield, there are regular buses that run along the coast to other towns and villages.

Corfu is a great destination for those looking for an island with plenty to see and do. If you head here in May, I'd recommend renting a car so that you can explore the island at your leisure.

Hydra is a popular day trip destination from Athens, but you could consider staying here a little longer! The island is car-free, meaning you can walk anywhere on the island without worrying about traffic.

A view of the Saronic island of Hydra in Greece

The atmosphere here is relaxed with a laid back vibe, and you really feel like you're getting away from it all when you visit Hydra.

In May, the beaches are quiet and a good place to relax. There are also some great hiking trails and places to explore too, so if the weather turns bad there's still plenty to do on this beautiful island!

You might not hear much about the island of Andros in Greece – but you can fill in the information gap by checking out our travel guide to Andros now available on Amazon !

Taking the ferry to Andros island in Greece

Andros is a beautiful island located in the Cyclades, and it's a great place to visit in May. The weather is usually good at this time of year, so you can enjoy the beaches and the outdoors.

Visiting Andros island in the Cyclades of Greece

There are plenty of things to see and do on Andros , from exploring the medieval Venetian castle to visiting the beautiful villages dotted around the island. There's also some great hiking and cycling trails to enjoy if you want to get out in nature a little.

Overall, Andros is an undiscovered hidden gem of Greece that should be on your list for this May! Give it a try and I'm sure you won't be disappointed!

Dae, We really enjoy your blog. As LONG time Greek visitors, 25 plus years, we have traveled to almost all the ‘suggested’ places. last summer while doing nothing but driving around, getting lost, we stumbled upon ancient Nemea and the old Olympic site. Very surprised to find out that they have resurrected the Nemea games. If I was not 83 years old, I would be in them this June 28! Still might.

Nemea is fantastic, isn’t it! Nothing quite beats following one of those brown antiquities road signs and discovering a whole new ancient city or site one hadn’t heard of!

The good news: there are a number of delicious destinations just the right side of up-and-coming right now, from a secret Aegean beauty to “the new Croatia ”. Feeling more exotic? The temperature’s rising on Asia ’s best island, and in Brazil’s answer to St Tropez . Antiparos, Greece

Average May temperature: 20℃

With every wannabe influencer and their mother draping themselves over Santorini and Mykonos this summer, it might be time to turn your attention to another Cyclades stunner. Antiparos’s quiet beauty has increasingly drawn seclusion-seeking celebs: Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson bought a villa here 15 years ago, while Madonna, Bruce Springsteen and Matthew McConaughey have all been spotted enjoying an under-the-radar getaway (no, not with each other). The excellent selection of private villas with ridiculous Aegean views (Villa Melissa from White Key, Villa Emerald with Elite) probably helps. There’s also the many, many sandy beaches lapped by electric-blue shallows; the unpretentious fun of ’til-dawn cocktail bars (Boogaloo, Loco); and even a beach club/restaurant/boutique hotel, The Beach House, hidden in its own secret cove.

Where to stay : For whitewashed walls against bright blue skies and typical Cycladic architecture, Artemis hotel ticks the boxes. Or, for independent travellers, this Airbnb with its own large pool shouldn't be missed.

Average May temperature : 23℃

“At a time when Ibiza is in danger of becoming overrun with Hard Rock Cafés and Nikki Beaches,” we once wrote, “Formentera’s funky little groove couldn’t be more enticing.” It still holds true. A half-hour ferry ride from its big-sister Balearic, this 12-mile-long island has the whole barefoot-boho thing going for it – it’s where Dylan once lived in a lighthouse and Joni Mitchell wrote her Blue album – and there are fabulous beach clubs sans the bangin’ choons. See 10 Punto 7, with its white director’s chairs, bleached decking and sushi; or cushioned day beds and green tea-infused cocktails at ChezzGerdi. Etosoto, the work of two Parisian brothers, is a farmhouse-turned-ideas-lab (wellness weeks, music workshops, film-making retreats), offering nine delightful, whitewash-and-polished-cement rooms.

Where to stay: Can Tres is home to three hidden-away, architect-designed angular houses, Can Aire, Can Mar and Can Terra, each with a handful of rooms. They feel like small apartments in the smartest imagining, with shaded private terraces for hand-delivered breakfasts of freshly baked bread and sticky jams. Or go it alone in this traditional Airbnb near the coast.

Umbria, Italy

Umbria : all the Tuscan countryside’s rustic beauty, without all the tourists. Far less ‘discovered’ than the major Italian hotspots, scattered with gorgeous medieval hamlets and serving the most unbelievable slow food from its farms and forests (truffles, wild boar, sunchokes), this is Italy’s undisturbed, back-to-the-land paradise, found. Where country churches casually hang an original Beato Angelico and, in hill town Orvieto, the un-Instagrammed Duomo contains 500 years’ worth of sculptures and mosaics. Further along the River Tiber, hillside Todi is an excellent spot for Umbrian sangiovese, with antipasti so fresh and bright, you’ll understand why this was once hailed the most liveable town in the world.

Where to stay: We recommend gathering your friends and booking this wonderful home in the hills , where you can sip wine as the sun sets. Or, for a more intimate stay, this small home with its own pool and impeccable views is hard to beat.

Albanian Riviera

Average May temperature : 22℃

It’s the new Croatia , they say, though they probably just mean the common allure of the Adriatic’s astonishing, crystalline hue. What the Albanian Riviera really offers is a dreamy European beach holiday that’s well into sunbathing temperatures by May . Do it right and you can even recreate the ‘hidden gem’ feel that first brought boho backpackers to this sensational strip of coast. Head to Ksamil, just opposite Corfu, for a bright-white beach on a brochure-beautiful bay. (There’s a trio of small islands a quick swim away if you need more room.) Or Dhërmi, famed for the colour of its water, but with such a long sweep of sand, you can always find a spot to call your own.

Where to stay : Slightly away from the busy coastline (but still within reach on a short trip) is Mrizi i Zanave Agroturizëm , a boutique hotel with impeccable views surrounded by nature. Or Elite Bay Hotel Lalez Durres is a minimalists' dream, right on the beach.

Turquoise Coast, Turkey

Average May temperature : 27℃

Increasingly billed as ‘Turkey’s Hamptons’, this south-western stretch of coastline – where the Aegean meets the Med – has remained glamorous and dignified, despite the ever-swelling gaggle of tourists pouring in. Hell, Assouline has even released a photo book documenting its aspirational good looks, from Kaş’s ancient ruins to that flirty water, glittering like the beckoning temptress it is. Of course, Bodrum Town will be heaving, but there’s always Alacati (simple and unspoiled), Kabak (beach yoga, hiking) or Patara (low-rise, low-key). And if you prefer the Bodrum buzz, there are many excellent hotels (Ian Schrager’s Edition, the Mandarin Oriental) and exclusive beach clubs (such as Maçakizi, where Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell have been seen sunbathing) for doing the Bodrum thing.

Where to stay : Bodrum EDITION is home to soft sand on the beach, where children splash about on paddleboards, and Balearic house music – plus its bar, Discetto, has a giant pink disco ball. For pure indulgence, Six Senses Kaplankaya has five private beaches, plus an impeccable spa.

Tokyo, Japan

Average May temperature : 21℃

Every facet of Tokyo ’s intoxicating otherness is best felt on the street: among crowds, under the gleam of neon, within a yakitori-smoke fog. Agog at the architecture -as-art fashion-house flagships along leafy Omotesando, and the Gothic Lolitas of Harajuku next door. Disbelieving as Shibuya crossing bursts into intermittent chaos, and stymying a slight headache amidst Akihabara’s candy-coloured anime anarchy. But the weather this time of year is fab for more peaceful pursuits, too: strolling the Meiji Shrine forest, say, or pedalling a swan-shaped boat across Ueno Park pond. Find more calm at Aman’s first-ever urban resort, one of our favourite hotels in the world .

Where to stay: There's nowhere better to take in the views of the Tokyo skyline than from the timelessly chic Mandarin Oriental , or Edition Toranomon has some of the city's most impressive cocktails at the glittering Gold Bar.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Average May temperature: 22℃

Breaking Bad might have made an unlikely star of Albuquerque, but it’s New Mexico’s state capital, Santa Fe , that belongs on screen. Surrounded by those same starkly beautiful vistas, the city’s signature adobe Pueblo-style architecture gives it a dreamy, old-timey quality. But in among all that folk art and New Age-iness, there beats a surprisingly contemporary pulse. The fantastical House of Eternal Return, a two-storey, explorable art installation by local collective Meow Wolf, is now one of its biggest attractions (built in an old bowling alley with the financial support of George RR Martin and a $2.7 million budget). Check out all the Georgia O’Keeffe stuff (the museum; her home and studio at Ghost Ranch, an hour outside the city), then follow up with cocktails at Santa Fe Spirits’ distillery and head to Anasazi for dinner, where modern cooking meets fiery Southwestern tradition (applewood-smoked duck breast with serrano-plum sauce).

Where to stay: El Rey Court is a retooled Route 66 motel with a killer mezcal bar and pool . Or for prestige, the Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi is an obvious choice: rooms feature beamed viga ceilings, kiva fireplaces, and antique Navajo rugs, and the location couldn't be more ideal.

Buzios, Brazil

Average May temperature : 26℃

When lured by the promise of Brazil’s ever-sexy beaches, it’s tempting to just stick to Rio . But that’d be a mistake – because, just three hours’ drive from ‘the marvellous city’, you’ll find the Brazilian answer to St Tropez . Thank Brigitte Bardot, who rocked up here with her Brazilian boyfriend in the 1960s, turning the heavenly Buzios peninsula into a sensation overnight. Today, it’s super-polished, more refined than its popular friend: clearer, cleaner water; sail-up restaurants; a plethora of posh boutique hotels. Locals don’t seem to mind the Bardot effect: there’s a sculpture of her on a gorgeous stretch of seafront, itself named ‘Orla Bardot’. Along with cobbled streets and caipirinhas, there are more than 20 beaches to choose between, ranging from jungle-clad stretches to lovely rock-hewn coves.

Where to stay: Insólito Boutique Hotel is found along the coast; if you can, stretch to the suite with its own deck and small pool, for incomparable views. Or bring friends and rent out this large and comfortable Airbnb with its own pool.

If you’re going to splash out on perfection, you might as well go at the perfect time. The Seychelles ’ underwater visibility hits its peak in May – up to 30 metres – and the temperature is a wonderful hot-but-not-too-hot.

Where to stay: Make it even more memorable and plump for a stay at Six Senses Zil Pasyon . Glass-fronted villas sit on Felicité, the archetypal castaway island with its dramatic granite boulders, jungly hills and white sand so soft it squeaks. The beach bar strings giant hammocks over the ocean; an outrageous spa is hidden between boulders directly on the seafront; and night-time brings fire-cooked lobsters and French champagne. Or, Four Seasons resort at Desroches Island is home to guest villas, quietly and immaculately done out and set in big, lawned gardens with private pools , from which secret walkways lead to wide beaches where turtles nest.

Boracay Island, Philippines

Average May temperature : 29℃

Boracay’s 2.5 mile-long, aptly named White Beach has been a victim of its own success: people went so crazy for this little piece of paradise over the past few years that in April 2018, the government abruptly shut the island down for ‘rehabilitation’. Six months later, Boracay reopened, with new rules. Limited flights and hotel rooms are being made available; smoking and booze are banned on White Beach; casinos and single-use plastics are out; and watersports are restricted to specific zones. That puts paid to Boracay’s standing as ‘the new Phuket ’ – and that can only be a good thing.

Where to stay: The Shangri-La in Boracay is set over 30 acres; the main building is an open pavilion with a pitched roof and an exterior of local coral stone, and rooms are spacious and luxurious. Or, Bolabog Beach is set on a quieter side of the coast. Here, you can watch hundreds of colourful kites light up the sky – all the better while sipping a Pineapple Mint shake at the Banana Bay , Bolabog’s best-kept boutique hotel .

10 Best Places to Visit in May

Beat the crowds of summer travel with a trip to these destinations..

  • Copy Link copied

Memorial Day might be the unofficial kickoff for summer, but why wait until then to take a vacation? There are plenty of reasons to squeeze in a trip before peak season starts, whether visiting an alternative Galápagos when the conditions are just right, or relishing an alternative side to Barbados at an unlikely festival.

Here are our 10 best places to travel in May.

Sure, you can loll on the beach and decompress in sunshine while in the Maldives, but why not dive into the waters here?

1. South Ari Atoll, Maldives

May is great for: underwater adventures with whale sharks

Ninety-nine percent of this country is water and only 1 percent is land, so it’s smart to choose the Maldives for an ocean-focused getaway. On the western side of the archipelago, there are notably well-preserved coral reefs that make it a perfect spot for divers.

This month in the Maldives, divers can catch whale sharks when they cluster in and around the reefs at the end of the season as winds blow from the northeast. These extraordinary animals—the world’s largest fish—can grow up to 40 feet long but they’re not the only jaw-dropper underwater here. There are hundreds of coral species, marine mammals like dolphins and porpoises, and mantas, which, like the sharks, are protected when in this atoll.

Where to stay: Conrad Maldives Rangali

  • Book now: Conrad Maldives Rangali

The 150-villa property sits across the Rangalifinolhu and Rangali islands, with different offerings depending on which you choose for your stay. (The former has a kids club and water sports center, while the latter island is quieter and more focused on R&R.) If you feel like splurging, try a night or two in the Muraka, the two-story suite that sits 16 feet below the surface of the ocean.

How to get to the Maldives

The best option is to take one of the Gulf carriers, such as Emirates or Qatar, and transit there. For those on the U.S. West Coast, the shortest journey is likely via Singapore, although you’ll still need to set aside an entire day to make the trek.

2. Côte d’Azur, France

May is great for: roses and red carpets

Visit the Côte d’Azur in late spring for a Goldilocks moment, when the crowds won’t have surged to bottle-service-and-dry-clean-bikini levels, but the weather will be balmy enough to idle away an afternoon on the patio of a beach club.

Make sure to stop in Grasse, a village that’s a 30-minute drive inland from Cannes. It’s protected from the salty sea breezes by the hills and well irrigated, which is favorable for the rose and jasmine grown here. May’s Exporose celebrates the former, covering the entire town with blooms, whether in bouquets or as bushes for sale.

Stick around for the end of the month if you want a glimpse of Cannes at its glitziest: The 77th edition of the film festival will run May 14–25.

Where to stay: Château de Théoule

  • Book now: Château de Théoule

Steer clear of the hubbub in town by booking a suite at this brand-new hotel a short boat ride down the coast in Théoule-sur-Mer. The 44-room property, created out of a former soap factory built in the 1630s, perches on the edge of the water—and every single bathroom has a glorious view of the Med.

How to get to the Cote d’Azur

It’s a no-brainer to hop on the bargain-priced all biz operation from La Compagnie, which begins its seasonal service between EWR and Nice in late April; it runs through the end of September this year.

3. Berlin, Germany

May is great for: the ultimate all-inclusive event.

The four-day Karneval der Kulturen (Carnival of Cultures) has been held since 1996, soon after the reunification of the city, and it acts as an emblem of that event. The free event involves more than 4,000 creatives over a long weekend (this year from May 17–20), whether local DJs or artisans selling their wares. Shanti Town is where you’ll find food trucks and companies with a strong emphasis on environmental responsibility, while the Rasen in Aktion location is the hub for performances that run the gamut from African bands to local singers.

The main event is the Parade on Pentecost Sunday (May 19), where 5,000 or so people come to party together, bringing samba dancers from Brazil alongside traditional German folk dancers or Chinese lion dancers.

Where to stay: Provocateur Berlin

  • Book now: Provocateur Berlin

Who wouldn’t want to stay in the aptly named hotel in Europe’s funkiest city, especially when it’s as affordable as this boutique option? The 58-room property, in the quieter western reaches, has a maximalist interior, all deep reds, punchy blues, and gilt, which gives it a retro, almost art deco–era vibe.

This month, both Delta and budget carrier Norse kick off their seasonal, direct nonstop service to Berlin from JFK; United also operates a year-round route from EWR.

4. The Algarve, Portugal

May is great for: easy-to-reach golfing getaways

United Airlines has carved out a welcome niche in recent years of offering nonstop service to vacation-focused destinations. For summer 2024, one of its new additions is Faro , the capital of the Algarve region in southern Portugal. It’s increasingly on a wider tourism radar: The first half of 2023 saw a 13.5 percent increase in visitors compared to the same time a year earlier.

Visitors are drawn here by the just-add-water perfection of the spot, where weather is consistent, the countryside gorgeous, and, of course, golf courses proliferate. There are 25 different clubs in the region, and more than half are top-rated in the country; you can play more than 40 9- or 18-hole layouts without leaving the Algarve.

Don’t miss the chance, too, for a quick trip to Culatra, one of the barrier islands protecting the coast from the brash Atlantic weather. It’s got superb beaches and restaurants where the seafood is so fresh it sits in tanks by the tables until the moment it’s ready to be eaten.

Where to stay: Martinhal Quinta

  • Book now: Martinhal Quinta

The 70-villa estate is more like a gated community than a hotel proper. Each villa, with between two and five bedrooms, has its own private garden and swimming pool. There are ample on-site activities, including a kids club and a golf course.

How to get to the Algarve

Other than that United-operated flight, which debuts this spring, consider TAP, the Portuguese national carrier, which connects via Lisbon, a 45-minute domestic hop away; it flies to a half-dozen U.S. hubs.

Morocco tends to be wet in March and April, which brings the rugged landscape to life. By May, though, the climate becomes dry and warm.

May is great for: an adventure among Africa’s northern mountain regions

This month, head into Morocco ’s Atlas Mountains for an unexpected outdoorsy experience that’s about two hours from Marrakech. It’s more important to spend money there now than ever, as it slowly recovers from the devastating earthquake of last fall.

Visit the mountain range and explore the rugged countryside while the weather is mild—you can climb the highest peak, 13,671-foot Mount Toubkal, in a couple of days if you’re reasonably fit and can handle the heady altitudes. If you’re a movie fan, visit the Aït Benhaddou village: The earthen buildings that form this settlement on the one-time caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech make it equal parts Biblical and otherworldly. No wonder it’s been a favorite filming backdrop for hits like The Mummy , Star Wars: A New Hope , and Gladiator . Some structures here, like the granary, were damaged last fall, but it still remains a compelling pit stop.

Where to stay: Kasbah Tamadot

  • Book now: Kasbah Tamadot

The Kasbah Tamadot , Richard Branson’s luxe mountainside property, was devastated in the earthquake; it has reopened after a reimagining, which saw rooms replaced with 10 glamping tents. Nightly rates include a donation to the Eve Branson foundation earmarked to uplift local communities nearby.

How to get to Morocco

Long-haul international flights are funneled via Casablanca—Royal Air Maroc’s routings to the United States offer nonstops from Washington, D.C. and New York. Consider, too, opting to break your journey in Europe, which allows you to connect to a short-haul flight to Marrakech, Tangier, Fez, or elsewhere.

6. Kangaroo Island, South Australia

May is great for: an alternative to the Galápagos

There’s no bad time to come to Kangaroo Island ; its extraordinary flora and fauna have earned the 1,700 square-mile island 13 miles off the coast of South Australia the unofficial nickname of “Australia’s Galápagos”.

You can see the namesake marsupials, sure (the species here is unique, with thicker fur for the colder climates in winter and a slower gait than its outback cousins), plus a large population of koalas. But there are many other rare and unusual flora and fauna: 87 percent of mammals, 93 percent of reptiles, and 45 percent of birds are unique to this spot and can be found nowhere else.

The best time to explore is undeniably fall, when days remain long enough to roam (usually until around 5:30 p.m.) and the temperatures are consistently balmy, making outdoorsy activities pleasant rather than sweaty. The weather is usually bright and clear, the seas remain calm, and wildflowers are in full bloom.

Where to stay: Southern Ocean Lodge

  • Book now: Southern Ocean Lodge

This all-inclusive lodge on Kangaroo Island has reopened on a similar footprint to its previous iteration, which was destroyed in the devastating wildfires of early 2020. The new, 25-suite property has been upgraded via a $55 million renovation under the auspices of its original architect, Max Pritchard, who was born on the island.

How to get to Kangaroo Island

There are no long-haul international arrivals to Adelaide, South Australia’s capital. Instead, connect there via Melbourne, Sydney, or Brisbane—Qantas, United, Delta, and American all fly between them and various stateside hubs. From there, take a 45-minute ferry ride to the island or a 30-minute flight.

7. Barbados

May is great for: enjoying an unexpected side to the Caribbean

The Caribbean ’s colonial holdovers are wide-ranging, and some islands even retain a Celtic flair. An unlikely celebrant of all things Celtic is Barbados , which holds a four-day festival that trumpets its ties to Scotland, Ireland, and Wales this month. That link largely derives from the indentured servants who came to work in the mansions here as household labor; many of them took up permanent residence in their new home.

From May 15 to 19, you can join in ceilidhs and concerts at the Barbados Celtic Festival . Try the unlikely fusion of Celtic and Caribbean food, expect to hear the blare of bagpipes wafting over the beaches, and don’t miss a riff on the Highland Games on Sunday afternoon. Last year’s lineup included champion piper Roddy MacLeod MBE—he’s won the title five times and he’s already confirmed for a return gig—plus Gleadhraich, a bagpipe-spiked rock band.

Where to stay: Sam Lord’s Castle

  • Book now: Sam Lord’s Castle

The name of this 422-room, all-inclusive resort is a nod to Sam Lord’s Castle on the same site in the 19th century, a mansion built by the namesake plantation owner, an unscrupulous rascal believed to have caused shipwrecks for his own profit. Thankfully, the 29-acre property is a new build from the ground up, banishing any bad vibes.

How to get to Barbados

Take your pick: The legacy carriers and JetBlue offer a variety of nonstops, everywhere from Charlotte, NC, to JFK.

Spring is a fine time to enjoy places like Charleston’s Rainbow Row.

8. Charleston, South Carolina

May is great for: gorging on highbrow culture in gorgeous surroundings

It’s always a good time to go to Charleston, but this year there’s particular appeal, after the International African American Museum opened there in 2023. If you’re mulling when best to go, though, May’s a slam dunk, especially for first-timers: The weather will be balmy, and less muggy than summer, and the city is energized by the beginning of the Spoleto Festival , which this year runs from May 22 to June 9.

The festival commandeers almost any public space, whether theater, church, or square for a program of performing arts (dance, opera, theater, choral) that’s a stateside counterpart to the Italian namesake. It was founded by the same person, Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Gian Carlo Menotti; he established this event in the late 1970s, two decades after he devised the original. Every year now, expect around 150 performances across 10 or so venues—this year’s lineup includes everything from Hedwig deviser John Cameron Mitchell in cabaret to a concert by New Orleans–based Trombone Shorty and his jazz band.

Where to stay: The Mills House Hotel

  • Book now: The Mills House Hotel

Two years ago, the 1853-founded Mills House Hotel underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation that encompassed every aspect of the hotel, from its 218 rooms and common areas to the rooftop pool and outdoor terrace, which reopens for the season this spring. One thing that didn’t change: its signature Millennial pink exterior.

How to get to Charleston

Charleston is one of the most networked cities in the USA, with nonstop service to more than 30 cities, including Minneapolis (MSP) and Detroit (DTW).

9. Santa Fe, New Mexico

May is great for: making a chic statement

From May 2 to 5, Santa Fe will be the host for an inaugural Indigenous Fashion Week , a four-day exploration of Indigenous designers from across North America. It’s the second event of its kind on the continent, following a pioneering week aimed at First Nations people in Canada, which first launched seven years ago.

Programming will incorporate symposia on fashion as well as runway days that showcase both traditional and contemporary riffs on Indigenous design, whether from what’s now the United States or from Canada. This extensive program is an evolution of the decade-old Indigenous Fashion Show run by Southwestern Association for American Indian Arts, which was first championed by Amber-Dawn Bear Robe from the Siksika Nation.

Bear Robe aims for the event to help establish the city as a hub for Indigenous style and design nationwide, building on the increasing presence of Indigenous designers in the Indian Market there, which takes place each August.

Right in the heart of Santa Fe, this adobe-style luxury inn features eclectically decorated, over-the-top rooms festooned with objets from the Silk Road and other far-flung locales.

How to get to Santa Fe

For a place that’s firmly on tourist radars, Santa Fe has surprisingly modest air connections. The only direct flights run from Denver, Dallas, Houston, and Phoenix. Most, though, can easily connect to one of those hubs from elsewhere, making it max a one-stop journey.

May is great for: jumping the shark

It’s the 50th anniversary this year of the novel that transformed the great white shark from apex predator in the wild to jump-scare staple: Jaws. Get ahead of next summer’s scarefest with a trip this spring, and take a specialist tour of the key filming sites.

The 87-square-mile island off the southwestern tip of Cape Cod is a slouchier, more relaxed riff on New England life than manicured Nantucket next door. Here you can amble around the colorful Aquinnah Cliffs, also known as Gay Head, the clay formation carved out by glaciers millions of years ago. These are Up-Island in the south and west, a quieter corner especially this month just before the high season begins. Down-Island, or the north and eastern reaches, has more tourist-friendly assets—head to Edgartown for its restored clapboard and cedar shingle mansions, and for a glass of wine or two. (Many towns here are dry, but for meals, you can often BYOB.)

Where to stay: The Summercamp Hotel

  • Book now: The Summercamp Hotel

The Summercamp Hotel is in Oak Bluffs, a rare booze-friendly settlement—it’s designed and named in homage to the fact that Methodists often used the island for summer camps (hence those prohibitions about drinking). It sits right across from the harbor, with rooms that have a kitschy retro touch to their decor.

How to get to Martha’s Vineyard

If you’re in the Northeast, seasonal regional carriers like Cape Air and Tradewinds are an option for a quick puddle jump over the water, while Delta’s service from LGA starts in May.

The Best Cyclades Islands in May

D aring to dip your toe in the sea while planning for summer vacations. Taking long walks on paved cobbled streets, with the sun setting behind freshly whitewashed houses. The rehearsal of our summer. Introducing the spring Cyclades to visit in May.

top islands to visit in may

Away from the crowds of the 15th of August, Tinos is a wonderful Cycladic Island, with so many beauties that you cannot manage to squeeze in a weekend. Tinos has fantastic beaches with water so sparkly it looks fake, and a fascinating hinterland that creates a natural dilemma of what to visit first. First, go to Kardiani between plane trees and running water? Then to Volax with the background of the lunar landscape of the spooky rocks that embrace it, and the valleys with the doves that stretch around it? Or maybe Kalloni under stone arches and between flowered courtyards? But what about Pyrgos ? If it were not a village, it could very well be an open-air museum of traditional architecture and sculpture.

andros island

As it is the greenest of the Cyclades, spring could only fit like a glove. The paths of Andros , which meander between idyllic gorges and running waters, are at their best at this time of year. Moreover, its Chora, which is one of the most beautiful of the Cyclades, is covered in orchards and plane trees. Finally, Korthi and Stenies villages with their beautiful mansions will leave you in awe.

Syros Island

You may know already that Syros is not famous for its beaches, especially as it belongs to a group of islands with magical waters. As there is some truth to that, there is a side to Syros that is extremely unique and breathtaking. Syros is an island made to be visited in Spring. Take spring walks among the colorful mansions of Ermoupolis , drink ouzo by the sea, go on spectacular routes with stunning vistas, and sightsee in museums like the one that tells the life of Markos Vamvakaris , and its local cuisine is no doubt one of the best Cyclades cuisines.

Sifnos Island

Probably the best cuisine of the Cyclades. One of the liveliest Chores in the Cyclades. A super romantic old capital called Kastro overlooks one of the most beautiful sunsets in the Aegean. And among all these, Sifnos boasts long sandy beaches, pebble coves, and shallow waters for families to have peace of mind, but also secret beaches for couples and hermits.

Tzia - Kea Island

Paths that connect beautiful Cycladic villages, mysterious ancient cities, and beaches with waters that shimmer in the light of the spring sun. This is the first thing that comes to mind when we think of Tzia – even more than her beautiful Chora, Ioulida , or the cosmopolitan Vourkari , which so unfairly loaded the label of the expensive island. Walking under the bright light of the skin-friendly spring sun, and give it a chance to prove to you that it is much more than the “island of yachts”.

The 15 Best Places to Visit in Europe in May

' data-srcset=

Sharing is caring!

If you’re curious about the best places to visit in Europe in May, then you’re in the right place. May is one of the best months to explore Europe. It’s one of my favourite times of year to travel. The flowers are blooming, the sun is shining, and the crowds haven’t quite descended yet. Whether you’re after a relaxing getaway or an action-packed adventure, there’s something for everyone in Europe in May.

The best places to visit in Europe in May - Malta views

From the vibrant streets of Barcelona to the winding canals of Amsterdam , May is the perfect time to soak up all the charm and culture that Europe has to offer. Whether you’re a culture vulture, a foodie, or just looking for a little adventure, you’ll definitely be able to find something for yourself at this time of year.

So sit back, grab a cup of tea (or a glass of wine, I don’t judge), and let’s dive into the best that Europe has to offer in May.

Also discover:

Where’s hot in may in europe.

May might not be the height of summer just yet. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get your tan on in Europe. In fact, there are plenty of places where you can bask in the heat, and start working on that golden glow before the crowds arrive.

If you’re looking for some seriously hot weather, then you might want to consider heading south. Spain, Portugal, and Italy are all great options, with temperatures averaging around 25-30°C (77-86°F). That means you can spend your days lounging on the beach and sipping sangria.

Or, if you just want a bit of warmth without feeling like you’re going to melt, the Greek islands, Croatia, and the south of France all offer pleasantly warm temperatures in May, with highs of around 20-25°C (68-77°F).

Is May the best time to visit Europe?

So, is May the best time to visit Europe? Well, in my opinion, yes it is! Or one of the best times at least.

Admittedly, the weather can be a mixed bag. While some destinations may be warm and sunny, others can still be a bit chilly and rainy, particularly in the north of the continent. But, generally, the weather in May is pleasantly mild. If you’re after the heat of the sun, head south. Whereas, in the north, you may even encounter some snow still!

The crowds are thinner than in the peak summer months, and there are plenty of events and festivals to keep you entertained. May is technically shoulder season. This means that prices for flights and accommodation may be slightly cheaper than in the peak of summer.

All in all, if you’re looking for a balance between good weather, smaller crowds, and plenty of things to see and do, May is an excellent time to visit Europe. Just be sure to do your research and pack for (potentially) variable weather!

So, without further ado, here are the best places to visit in Europe in May.

20 Best Places to Visit in Ireland — From a Dark-sky Park With Milky Way Views to One of Europe's Highest Sea Cliffs

From the popular Cliffs of Moher to lesser-known towns, islands, and mountains, these are the best places to visit in Ireland.

When I visited Ireland for the first time back in 2016, I thought my four-day itinerary was airtight. My friend and I would spend a night in Dublin, head to Galway, drive to the Wicklow Mountains, and then explore Howth before flying home from the capital city. While we certainly covered a lot of ground, the plan was flawed from the beginning. Four days is barely enough time to discover one region, much less the country as a whole. Yes, I checked off several popular items — including Trinity College Library, Quay Street, and the Cliffs of Moher — but the country boasts many more charming villages, natural wonders, and historic landmarks, each as worthy of a visit as the next.

According to Michael Leahy, the head concierge at Ashford Castle , I’m not the only traveler who has made that mistake. “I find that first-time visitors to Ireland often misjudge how large and expansive the island is, and therefore underestimate the time they need to fully explore and enjoy Ireland’s myriad attractions, sites, hotels, rich history, and cultural heritage,” he tells Travel + Leisure . If your schedule is flexible, he recommends extending your trip — so it’s longer than just a few days — in order to get a “well-rounded Irish experience.”

By embracing this leisurely pace, you’ll also be able to appreciate your trip more profoundly. “Beyond the picturesque landscapes, taking time to interact with locals, immersing yourself in traditional music, and exploring local pubs can enhance your overall experience and truly integrate you into the Irish way of life,” explains Chris Parkes, front of house manager at Adare Manor .

To ensure your trip to the Emerald Isle is more comprehensive than my original endeavor, we asked some of the country’s most knowledgeable experts to share their recommendations for the best places to visit in Ireland. Read on to discover their favorites.

There’s a good chance you’ll start your Irish adventure in Dublin , home to Dublin Castle, Trinity College Dublin, the National Museum of Ireland, and the Guinness Storehouse. It’s a walkable city, so you’ll be able to explore most of it in just a day or two. For an extra dose of history and a drink, of course, make your way to The Brazen Head , which Patrick McManus, concierge at The Shelbourne , notes is the oldest pub in Dublin.

Related: Well Spent: The Best Places in Dublin to Eat, Drink, and Shop

According to Parkes, Galway’s “bohemian atmosphere and lively arts scene” are two reasons you’ll want to visit the harbor city during your journey. Unlike Dublin, where you may feel the need to see as much as possible, Galway is a bit more low-key. He recommends travelers “stroll through cobblestone streets, savor traditional music in local pubs, and experience the enchanting landscapes of Connemara that surround this charismatic city.”

In Kinsale, “beautiful views of the harbor abound,” says Anna Marron, guest relations manager at Liss Ard Estate . If it’s a nice day, stretch your legs along the 3.7-mile Scilly Walk before heading to Bulman Bar & Restaurant for dinner. Or, if you want something a bit more elevated, there’s the Michelin-rated Bastion , which is only open Thursday through Sunday.

Old Head of Kinsale

Marron describes the Old Head of Kinsale as a “world-class golf course on many golfer's ... lists.” It’s only about a 20-minute drive from the town, but it stands alone as its own destination. “It’s the Pebble Beach of Ireland,” she adds, referring to the golf paradise in Northern California.

Cliffs of Moher

There’s a reason the Cliffs of Moher make an appearance on your Instagram feed every so often — and they’re even more beautiful in person. “Towering over the Atlantic Ocean, the cliffs offer panoramic views that are both exhilarating and serene,” says Parkes. Plus, says, McManus, the surrounding landscape is equally impressive, “with unique and precious wildlife and natural flora and fauna.”

Iveragh Peninsula

Leahy describes the Iveragh Peninsula as a “stunning stretch of heritage in southwestern Ireland” that offers a “picturesque escape into nature’s awaiting embrace.” Many travelers choose to explore the area via the Ring of Kerry, the scenic drive that encircles the peninsula. The route’s popularity stems from the fact that the 111-mile journey is accented by incredible landscapes, small villages, and top-tier views of the Atlantic Ocean.

If you decide to complete the Ring of Kerry scenic drive, you’ll come across Killarney. Take the time to explore the town — it’s very walkable — but Parkes also shares that nearby Killarney National Park should not be overlooked: “Within the park, you'll find the three famous Killarney lakes, which provide breathtaking views as they sit beside the mountain range ... [and] Torc Waterfall, one of the most spectacular in Ireland and best viewed after heavy rain.”

Dingle Peninsula

You’ll find the Dingle Peninsula slightly northwest of Killarney. According to Parkes, its “rugged coastline and charming villages” create the ultimate Irish experience. “Explore the Slea Head Drive for jaw-dropping vistas, encounter ancient archaeological sites, and engage with the welcoming locals who add a touch of warmth to this picturesque region,” he adds.

Aran Islands

Inishmore, Inishmaan, and Inisheer make up the Aran Islands, a place known for its ruins and sacred sites. “The islands unfold a tale of timeless elegance against the backdrop of the Atlantic's gentle embrace,” explains Leahy. If you’re already in Galway, you can take the seasonal ferry directly from the city to the islands.

If your trip was inspired by the desire to hear Irish music, look no further than Doolin, a coastal village known as the “traditional music capital of Ireland.” Take a seat at Gus O'Connor's Pub or McDermott's Pub and enjoy hours of lively tunes, pint in hand. Doolin is also called the “gateway to the Aran Islands,” as the rocky isles are just offshore.

Located southwest of Limerick, Adare was founded in the 13th century, and since then, it's become known as one of the most beautiful villages in the country. Parkes shares he may be a bit biased, given that he works in Adare, but he also says it’s a destination that captivates visitors with its “timeless charm … picture-perfect thatched cottages, historic architecture, and lush green landscapes.”

Trim Castle

Located in County Meath, Trim Castle is the largest Norman castle in Ireland and a well-preserved example of Anglo-Norman military architecture. Travelers may recognize it from "Braveheart," but the castle’s history goes all the way back to the 12th century, when it served as a fortress during the Norman invasion of Ireland.

If you’re after an unforgettable view of the ocean and its powerful waves, Marron suggests checking out Mizen Head in West Cork. She calls the geographical feature a “more dramatic and less-visited version of the Cliffs of Moher,” and it’s commonly known as the mainland’s most southwesterly point.

Wicklow Mountains National Park

McManus also recommends exploring Wicklow Mountains National Park , the largest of Ireland’s six national parks. Hikers and walkers have their choice of paths in this stunning region — and movie buffs will want to make their way to Sally Gap, a recognizable setting from the 2007 film "P.S. I Love You."

Giant’s Causeway

The Giant’s Causeway is one of the most identifiable features in Ireland. While scientists have discovered that the 40,000 basalt columns sticking out of the sea were formed by volcanic activity more than 50 million years ago, there’s still a mystical and sacred feeling to the area. “This historic route invites pilgrims and wanderers alike to tread upon its hallowed ground, whispering tales of spirituality and connection through the ages,” shares Leahy.

Jerpoint Abbey

History can be found nearly everywhere you go in Ireland — but it’s particularly noticeable at Jerpoint Abbey in County Kilkenny. The medieval Cistercian abbey dates back to the 12th century and features Romanesque and Gothic elements. Inside, visitors will find a church, tower, cloister, and several detailed stone sculptures.

Mayo Dark Sky Park

If the weather permits, astronomy enthusiasts will be able to see stars, planets, the Milky Way, and even meteor showers while inside Mayo Dark Sky Park , a designated dark-sky preserve in County Mayo. Should you visit, Leahy says you’ll get to witness these “celestial wonders unfolded beneath a cloak of velvety darkness,” all completely free of charge.

“Howth is a lovely fisherman’s village,” says McManus. It’s a quick trip from Dublin — about 30 minutes by train — so it’s an easy destination to tack on to the beginning or end of your trip. Start the day with a moderate hike along the 3.7-mile Howth Cliff Walk, then head back to the village for some fresh seafood (you can’t go wrong with fish and chips).

Croagh Patrick

Croagh Patrick, which you may hear referred to as “the Reek,” is one of Leahy’s recommendations, thanks to its “iconic peak overlooking the surrounding landscape” and its role as a “majestic pilgrimage site.” The mountain has held religious significance for mor ethan 1,500 years, and it’s said that Ireland's patron saint, St. Patrick, spent 40 days fasting on its summit in the fifth century. It’s also popular with hikers and those interested in panoramic views of Clew Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, and the surrounding countryside.

Sliabh Liag

Sliabh Liag, or Slieve League, is one of Europe’s highest sea cliffs, measuring in at nearly 2,000 feet above sea level. Significantly taller than the Cliffs of Moher, which reach 702 feet, these cliffs provide amazing views in nearly every direction — and they’re a convenient stop along the famed Wild Atlantic Way .
