Pearl Jam has announced a slew of new 2023 US tour dates, which will kick off in Minneapolis in August.

The iconic grunge band will perform nine shows in August and September, making stops in St. Paul, Chicago, Indianapolis, Fort Worth, and Austin. It will be joined by special guests Inhaler as support for the dates in Chicago, Indianapolis, and Austin, with the opening act for the other shows to be announced in the coming weeks.

With the new tour dates, Pearl Jam will try to protect fans by giving access to fairly priced tickets, the majority of which will be provided to members of its Ten Club fan club. Tickets will be non-transferable in all states except Illinois, where it is prohibited by law. In a press release, the band apologized to fans in the state “who may be subject to increased ticket prices on the secondary market.”

PJ Premium tickets will also be sold, with those seats located in a variety of preferred locations and will account for approximately 10 percent of the ticket inventory per show. They are priced at market rate to offset touring costs while also keeping prices low for the rest of the ticket inventory. PJ Premium tickets will be available through a Verified Fan sale, along with regularly priced tickets.

The 2023 US tour marks the first time Pearl Jam will use all-in pricing, which means the ticket price listed is the full out-of-pocket price inclusive of fees.

A special pre-sale for members of the Ten Club who held membership on April 19, 2023, will begin today. General public tickets will then be sold through Ticketmaster Verified Fan, which requires advance registration. The registration window is open now through 5pm PT on April 25 –  you can register here . The Verified Fan sale will then begin on April 28 at 10am local time.

Last year, Pearl Jam committed to addressing its carbon footprint as a touring band with an initiative that saw the band pledging to pay $200 per ton of CO2 used on its Gigaton tour. Globally, the carbon offset market varies, but the average amount paid per ton of CO2 is between $1-15.

Pearl Jam is a five-piece American rock band from Seattle, Washington. Formed in 1990, the band originally had four members and championed the Seattle sound of grunge and alternative rock. Pearl Jam is considered one of the biggest names in music from the 1990s, especially in the grunge music scene.

In addition to shunning media attention, the band is known for its social activism and outspoken political views. Most notably, the band members were vocally opposed to the 43rd president of the U.S., George W. Bush.

The band is comparable to other grunge bands of the era, with a slightly lighter overall tone more reminiscent of classic rock. Lead singer Eddie Vedder’s distinctive gravelly vocals also set the band apart from many others of the time in terms of sound.

The band has drawn comparisons to The Doors, Nirvana, and The Ramones, and Vedder’s vocals have been compared many times to the iconic Jim Morrison. Vedder cites The Who, Neil Young, and Led Zeppelin as major musical influences on the band.

Pearl Jam still remains iconic in the ’90’s grunge rock scene, with its 1991 debut album, “Ten,” now certified 13 times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The band has remained successful even without the ’90’s grunge backdrop to support them, and since early comparisons to Nirvana, Pearl Jam can now be likened to the Foo Fighters, Radiohead, and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Pearl Jam is infamous or famous (depending on whose side you’re on) for pushing back against music industry traditions and the mainstream since the band’s inception. For instance, its members refused to make music videos to promote albums and never gave interviews; the little media engagement they were involved in was regarding a boycott of ticketing giant Ticketmaster in 1994.

Thanks to its unconventional approach to fame and its dedication to lengthy and sprawling tours, Pearl Jam has cultivated an enormous fan following, with some of the more ardent fans being compared to the notoriously dedicated fanbase of the Grateful Dead. To date, the band has released 11 critically-acclaimed and commercially successful albums.

Born out of the band Mother Love Bone after its vocalist Andrew Wood died, the band includes vocalist and frontman Eddie Vedder, guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready, and bassist Jeff Ament. The drummer for the band has changed no less than five times, but Matt Cameron (formerly of Soundgarden) has filled the seat since 1998.

Pearl Jam exploded onto the music scene in 1991 with its first album, Ten. The debut album was a huge success and spent an impressive five years on the Billboard Top 200 chart, becoming one of the highest-grossing rock albums of all time. Following the album’s release, the band launched a massive tour to promote it.

The release of its second album, Vs., in 1993 was even more successful. During its first week on the market, the album sold so many copies it set a record for the most copies sold in a single week. Total record sales for that week landed at 950,000.

In 1994, news broke that Ticketmaster was gouging Pearl Jam’s concert goers with excessive service charges. Outraged, Vedder and his bandmates organized an informal boycott of Ticketmaster events. Wanting to connect with their fans more directly and avoid them paying fees to the “outright [greedy]” concert industry, Pearl Jam canceled its 1994 summer tour. It even lodged a formal complaint with the Justice Department claiming that Ticketmaster was an illegal monopoly.

On the heels of the unprecedented success of Vs., the band returned to the studio to produce its third album, Vitalogy. The album initially dropped in November 1994 on vinyl before its official CD release in December. After the CD release, the album became the second-fastest-selling rock record in history, with an astonishing 877,000 copies sold during the first week.

Later that year after the release of its third album, Vitalogy, the band conducted its own tour, playing exclusively non-Ticketmaster venues. It often had to play at very unconventional venues as a result, and their tour crew took practically an entire venue’s worth of equipment and staging everywhere they went.

Despite Pearl Jam’s best efforts in the fight against Ticketmaster, in 1995, the Justice Department in America ceased to investigate the company. The band was left defeated after being “stomped on by a huge corporate entity.” While the loss frustrated the band members, it didn’t slow their production.

In 1996, the next album, No Code, was released. The album is the most unique in terms of sound and is an intentional departure from the band's original sound. The band’s next studio album, Yield, was released in February 1998 and marked its return to its signature sound.

Over the next decade, the band created more highly successful music, securing its position as one of the most successful bands in U.S. music history and becoming a household name by the end of the 1990s. The group created several more albums, experimenting slightly with different musical influences but remaining true to its signature rock sound that made it famous at the onset of its musical career.

The group's extreme popularity diminished some during the early 2000s. In May 2000, the group released its sixth studio album titled Binaural. The album, while still successful, was less of a commercial success than its predecessors. A massive summer tour followed the release of, Binaural. Unfortunately, the tour ended tragically when nine fans were crushed to death when the crowd rushed the stage at the Roskilde Festival while Pearl Jam performed.

The seventh album, Riot Act, dropped in November 2002 to good reviews, but was followed by a lengthy hiatus. The band released its next album, the self-titled Pearl Jam, in May 2006. Backspacer, the group’s ninth album, came next in 2007. Throughout 2009 and 2010, Pearl Jam promoted Backspacer with tours across North America and Europe. Fans had to wait a few years for the tenth album, Lightning Bolt, which came out in 2013.

In 2017, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. By 2018, Pearl Jam was one of the best-selling bands of all time. It boasted nearly 85 million album sales worldwide, with 32 million in the U.S. alone.

Its eleventh and most recent studio album, Gigaton, dropped in 2020.

The band continues to tour and is known as one of the best arena acts of all time. In May 2022, the band announced the forthcoming release of new material. Check out its official website to stay up to date on upcoming Pearl Jam tour dates, tickets, and more.

Live reviews

If you haven't heard of Pearl Jam, they were one of the biggest bands of the 90s and are still wildly popular today. One of the key players in the grunge movement, Pearl Jam features the strong voice of Eddie Vedder. Pearl Jam put on a great show that has the audience on their feet from the opening number until the last encore – they can even drive this middle-aged dad to mosh from time to time!

Pearl Jam perform for almost three hours a night and usually don't have an opening act, so they definitely give the fans their money's worth. These days, Pearl Jam mostly play larger venues and stadium shows, but their performance doesn't need to be masked by special effects, background musicians, and fancy dance routines. They play good honest music with soulful vocals for an eclectic crowd of all ages from fifty-year old soccer moms to teens dressed in black. Intertwined with the music are some lyrics and/or monologues espousing liberal political causes, but I imagine that even a diehard conservative would forgive them once the band got back to the music!

They generally play a mix of fan favorites and b-side songs with some really interesting covers (like "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" by The Beatles, or maybe some Neil Young) added to the mix. The set list can vary quite a bit from date to date, which is good news for anyone planning to attend multiple shows.

This was my 18th Pearl Jam show and it was one of the best!!

Detroit is an amazing place to spend a day or two. Despite everything you hear in the media I felt safe and the people were all super nice. We went to a local bar and met lots of cool people from all over who were attending the Wishlist Foundation pre-party.

This is a charity run by Pearl Jam fans who throw a party before each concert, worldwide. Great vibe and you get to support a number of great causes. I won 3 raffle prizes!! We make our way to the show and even though our seats were int he 200's it did not matter, there was not a bad seat in the place. Much smaller than Toronto, which is nice.

Pearl Jam seems to be in the best place as a band they have ever been in! You can see how happy they all are from the nosebleeds. Always smiling and interacting and joking around.

The set-list was INSANE. It was one of the best I have ever seen and the best on the tour by far......until they went and played "No Code and Yield in their entirety a couple days later.

It was a great show, they are this generations Grateful Dead, every show is different and worth seeing and the vibe and fans and relationship we all have is what makes it special.

I hope you all get to experience it once.

I must admit I hadn't seen Pearl Jam for a few years. I grew up with them, they shaped me. They got me through some bad times and were there for the good times too. But I still didn't know what to expect because, hey, they're a bit older now aren't they? What I didn't expect was to be blown away. Certainly not to the extremes that I was.

Put quite simply that was the best gig I have ever been to. Ever. Without doubt.

34 songs and 3 1/4 hours of pure passion, feeling, emotion and energy. I don't know who enjoyed it more - the crowd or Pearl Jam themselves. It was so clear that they didn't want to leave the stage and we'd all still be there now if Eddie Vedder could have had his way.

The man is a God. Always has been. Always will be. But last night Mike McCready was sublime. Effortless perfection. Simply stunning.

The day after a gig is always a test for me. If I wake up thinking about the gig the gig was good. But today I've been unable to concentrate on anything else. I don't know how I coped before YouTube but it's been my saviour today.

Kids haven't heard of Pearl Jam. They don't know who they are, they don't know what they are. My kids however do. Pearl Jam is in my DNA.

Great show from Pearl Jam last night. 34 songs and almost 3hour non-stop! The sound in Telenor arena is usually average and sometimes poor. This time the sound were overall pretty good. Vocals were actually quite good.

The band entered the stage at 20:15 (they were supposed to enter 20:00), but no big deal. The concert ended 23:10, so almost 3hours of great rock n roll! :) The setlist was a bit different from last time I saw Pearl Jam in Oslo, 2012. Still missing some of my personal favorites: Better man, Black, I am mine, Nothingman, The Fixer. Some of them were playted in 2012, so no big deal.

Fantastic that they played Garden! A girl on front row had been in 22 shows and never heard it. She had a poster with that written on it. PJ actually played it for her, and she cried her happy tears. Magical moment.

Eddie Vedder is music, his presence is unique. Probably the best concert ever in Telenor arena, Oslo. It's difficult to get a good atmosphere and it is hated as a venue amongst musiclovers. It is not built for concerts. Today I forgot that the concert was in Telenor arena, it was a great atmosphere.

Amazing show in Rio de Janeiro @ Maracanã on November 22th 2015.

Perfect vocals from mr. Vedder, the band was very tight with lenghty solos from mr. McReady and a furious and visceral drumming from Mr. Cameron.

This is a great band, definitely worth seeing live. Mixing old classics and a couple of songs from recent releases, the band never ceases to amaze, in my humble opinion. This was my second time seeing PJ live (the first was on their limited tour in 2013 while they were amidst "Lightning Bolt" recording schedule). The band consider their fans as a "large family" as mentioned by mr. Vedder himself last night, and the gig definitely has a "gathering" vibe, specially if you go with your old pals from school, like it was my case.

In addition, mr. Vedder invited a fan to sing the first verse from one of their songs, wore a speedo on top of his clothes throw by a fan (go figure), drank cachaça (local spirit) and made a powerful and very heartfelt tribute to one of the victims from the Paris Attacks.

4 out of 5 stars (I rated "4" since I didn't knew the words from many of their songs).

The bar has just been raised to a new, and I feel unmatchable height in live music!! Pearl Jam were beyond amazing, a truly emotional near 3 and a half hour set which had me in tears of happiness, smiles, singing til my voice gave out! Truly the best gig I have ever been, and with the list I have behind me that's no mean feat!! Pearl Jam I salute you, you took a massive back catalogue and managed to put the perfect set, taking us up through the emotions, songs like Black beautifully pulling at heart strings, and Jeremy causing such a mass singalong that it almost drowns Eddies soul dripping vocals. It's powerful from start to epic finish, and even after nearly 3 and half hours onstage the energy being displayed is that of a band not even half their age. Simply put, after having seen nearly 1500 bands live, Pearl Jam just put each and every one in their place. Epic, breathtaking, words that still can't cover it!!

I've seen Pearl Jam 21 times since 1998 and each and every show was amazing! Of course, there are a few shows that stand out, the main one being the final show at the Spectrum in Philadelphia on Halloween night, 2009. The last show at this historical venue was one of four sold-out shows that week and the fact that it was on Halloween night made it a trifecta of live music awesomeness! They rocked the Spectrum for over 3 and half hours that night…how many other bands out there play shows that long? Many people ask, “How can you go see the same band multiple times on one tour?” Well, Pearl Jam isn’t your average band! No two shows are ever the same, so going to multiple shows is a must, or you might miss one of the rare songs…like when they played “Bugs” at that Spectrum show for the first time EVER! Pearl Jam concerts are the BEST shows…past, present and future!

Great setlist, perfect weather, fitting venue and they guys from Pearl Jam so great, energetic and charismatic as always. They seem to really love to play live for their crowd. Only negative thing was due to se fanatic Ten-Club member group (aparently US-americans, aprox. 20-25 persons) who were very hostile towarda people who approched the front rows, threatening people in group and being very disgusting while appearing to be very "devote" fans. Sasly security didn’t seem to notice or, if they did, didn’t care. That just left a bit of bitterness since it was infuriating to see how they were behaving and being aggresive and trying to intimidate people in a band‘s concert who otherwise represent the whole opposite of that group‘s behavior.

Other than that, it was an awesome, long and unforgettable show.

Tuesday 17th July. The O2, London. Pearl Jam. So here we are at the rescheduled date after the recent cancelled gig in June. I probably said most of what I wanted to say in my review from last month https://garyw66.weebly.com/blog/rockin-in-the-free-world-with-pearl-jam

All that said this time I was down on the floor this time and it certainly added to the atmosphere and you could appreciate the light show too. Making up for the cancelled gig tonight we are treated to a 33 song near three hour set, encore upon encore including some great covers from the likes of Petty, The Who and Dylan.

It’s a breathless night and tonight Pearl Jam only go to confirm that they are one of the great live rock acts around. I don’t need to say anymore. Another great night.

WHAT.A.SHOW.I had high expectations for this show and they delivered at such a level that I couldn't explain. The crowd sang every song lyric, everyone was on their feet during the entire show, people were dancing, bouncing, and having a wonderful time. It had such an old school vibe because there were handful of people using their phones. Young and older audience were all into the show and Pearl Jam's performance. It was beautiful. Their solos were solid. Plus, the show was in Miami and Chris Bosh, Pat Riley, and D-Wade were all in attendance. People who had listened to a few songs by Pearl Jam instantly fell in love. They played a tribute to veterans and a Pink Floyd cover, which I thought was amazing. This will live with me forever.

How to Get Tickets Pearl Jam Ten Club Members-Only Presale powered by Ticketmaster Request

What is ticketmaster request.

Pearl Jam is using Ticketmaster Request to power this fan club presale. Ticketmaster Request is a simple way to request tickets to popular shows, so you don’t have to compete in a first-come, first-served sale. You can take your time to review the available options and request the right tickets for you. All you need to do is tell us which show(s) you’re interested in, the type of ticket you want and your payment details. If tickets that match your request are available, your card will be charged, and we’ll email you instructions on how to view them. Note: each show you are confirmed for will be charged separately by Ticketmaster; the charge will appear as Ticketmaster*Pearl Jam.

How does the Ten Club ticket request work?

Complete your request in three easy steps. First, tell us what shows and tickets you’re interested in. Then, provide a credit card to complete your ticket request. If your request is fulfilled, your card will be charged and we’ll email you a confirmation with instructions on how to view your tickets during the week of February 19. Note: tickets will not show in your Ticketmaster account until all seating assignments are finalized.

How do I unlock access to the Ten Club ticket request?

Eligible Ten Club members will receive an email from Ten Club with the info. You can also find the presale info on the Ten Club Member News page. The Ten Club ticket request is for eligible Ten Club members only with active membership accounts as of Monday, February 12, 2024.

Is there a cutoff date to become a Ten Club member for the ticket request presale?

Yes. All fans must be a Ten Club paid member, current as of Monday, February 12, 2024. However, all fans can register for the chance to access the general sale on February 23 — tap here to get started.

Can I request tickets for more than one city?

Yes. By submitting a ticket request for any show, you are committing to purchase the ticket(s) should your request be fulfilled. For example, if you enter for five shows, it is possible your request can be fulfilled for all five shows in which case your credit card will immediately be charged for tickets to all five shows. However, you can only purchase up to two Ten Club tickets for each individual show. All tickets will be non-transferable in all states except where it is prohibited by law.

Can I get tickets to both shows in a city that has multiple performance dates?

Yes. For cities where there are two performance dates, you can request and may be confirmed for both shows, except in New York, where you can only be confirmed for one show.

Why can I no longer prioritize my shows?

Based on fan feedback, the prioritization tool caused confusion. Only request tickets for shows you can definitely attend.

My friend and I are both Ten Club Members. We both want to request a pair of tickets each. Can we both submit our requests using the same Ticketmaster account?

No, each member must request tickets using their own Ticketmaster account.

How will tickets be determined for Ten Club members?

To level the playing field, ticket requests are fulfilled in a randomized selection process. If selected for seated tickets, tickets will be assigned based on Ten Club seniority within the purchased price level.

Where are the tickets located?

Ten Club tickets are located in a variety of ticket types and locations. We anticipate greater demand for tickets than are tickets available. To better your chances of getting Ten Club tickets, select as many ticket options as you are willing to purchase.

What is the GA Pit or Reserved - Standing or Seating option?

Select this option if you are willing to stand in GA or sit through the show as you may be selected for either. If selected for GA standing tickets, you will receive early entry at a predetermined GA only door, at venues where early entry is permitted. If selected for Reserved Seating, your tickets will be assigned based on seniority in Ten Club.

What is the Reserved - Seating option?

In most venues, Ten Club reserved seated tickets will be available in two price levels. Reserved seated tickets are assigned to members based on seniority in the Ten Club within the purchased price level and will start closest to the stage extending back and include seats down on the arena floor. Ten Club ticketed areas will be highlighted on the seating chart during the ticket request process. Due to high demand at many of these shows, Ten Club seats can be located in some of the upper sections. Members with reserved tickets will enter the venue at the regular door time.

Why does Ten Club have seats in the upper areas?

Many venues have contractual partner programs which guarantee their subscribers access to some of the prime locations across all events in the building, including Pearl Jam shows. This is a contractual arrangement and is outside of Ten Club’s control. In some venues Ten Club must hold seats in higher sections to make up for the loss of ticket inventory in the lower areas.

What types of ADA Seating are available?

ADA seating is available through Ticketmaster Request during the seat selection process. Locations will vary by venue and are typically very limited. There is no ADA seating in the GA PIT at any of the shows.

Can I transfer or sell tickets I can’t use?

All tickets are non-transferable* and non-refundable.

Pearl Jam has asked Ticketmaster to ensure their fans have access to tickets at face value and to achieve this they have directed that tickets be restricted from transfer.* On the night of the show, all guests will be required to enter with the ticket purchaser. For fans that can’t use the tickets they have purchased, Pearl Jam and Ticketmaster will offer a Fan-to-Fan Face Value Ticket Exchange for every city beginning at a later date.*

*Does not apply to shows in Chicago, IL and New York, NY where the Fan-to-Fan Face Value Ticket Exchange cannot be mandated.

Any details on Fan-to-Fan Face Value Ticket Exchange for Pearl Jam?

Fan-to-Fan Face Value Ticket Exchange will be offered for every city beginning at a later date.* You must have a valid bank account or debit card within the country of the event(s) in order to sell through the Fan-to-Fan Face Value Ticket Exchange. Tickets identified for sale above face value on secondary marketplaces are subject to cancellation. For more info on Ticketmaster’s Fan-to-Fan Face Value Ticket Exchange click here.

What should I do if I’m buying tickets for a show in Chicago, IL and New York, NY?

Chicago, IL and New York, NY have laws that prohibit artists from being able to restrict the transfer of their tickets. For shows in these states, Pearl Jam strongly encourages fans to choose to only buy or sell tickets to one another on face value exchanges — including Ticketmaster’s Fan-to-Fan Face Value Exchange.

Why are tickets non-transferable in some cities and not in others?

Local laws around resale as well as technical ticketing capabilities vary in different venues, states, and countries, therefore transferability will vary throughout the tour.

Can I register for the shows outside of North America?

Yes. For additional details on registering for international tour dates, visit Pearl Jam’s Official Website or click here .

How many tickets can I buy with my code?

You can purchase up to four (4) tickets per arena show and six (6) tickets per stadium show indicated in the text you received.

On the evening of Thursday, February 22, you’ll receive an email letting you know if you selected to join the sale or if you’ve been placed on the waitlist. If you are selected, you will also receive a unique access code via text.

When submitting my registration, I received a six-digit authentication code from Ticketmaster. Can I use this code to purchase tickets during the sale?

No. Registration does not guarantee access to the sale.

If I receive access to the sale, am I guaranteed tickets?

What is the ticket limit?

The ticket limit for the sale is four (4) tickets per arena show and six (6) tickets per stadium show.

What is PJ Premium?

PJ Premium seats are located in a variety of preferred locations and account for approximately 10% of ticket inventory per show. They are priced at market rate to offset increased touring costs while also keeping prices low for the rest of the ticket inventory. PJ Premium tickets will be available along with regularly priced tickets during the sale.

Can I transfer my code to someone else?

No, codes are unique to the account they’re issued to and won’t work if shared.

All tickets are non-transferable (except for in Illinois and New York) and non-refundable.

How can I get the seating map in advance?

Seating options vary depending on the event or venue and in some cases may not be available until tickets go on sale. Visit the event page on Ticketmaster to learn more about seating options and maps.

How will I know if I’ve been granted access to the Registration Sale after I’ve been placed on the waitlist?

If selected, you will receive a text with a unique access code and link to the sale. In the event of any text delivery issues, we’ll email your unique access code and link to the email address associated with your Ticketmaster account that you used to register. Access to the sale does not guarantee tickets. Tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. If you’re sent a unique access code and link, you should join the sale as soon as possible.

I’m a real fan – not a bot or reseller. Why didn’t I get access?

Selection is random and not a measure of how big a fan anybody is. There are typically more fans registered than there are tickets available so a limited number of fans get access to the sale, and others must be placed on the waitlist. The number of fans who receive access depends on the number of tickets currently available — this is done to help create a less crowded ticket shopping experience for fans.

Pearl jam gives details of new album 'dark matter,' drops first single, announces world tour.

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES – Pearl Jam 's forthcoming album is called “Dark Matter,” its first single of the same title has been released, and the band will start a world tour in May.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers revealed the new details on the project and their 2024 plans on Tuesday.

“Dark Matter," their 12th studio album and first since 2020's “Gigaton," will be released April 19 on Monkeywrench and Republic records. A tour is scheduled to begin May 4 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Singer Eddie Vedder , 59, lead guitarist Mike McCready, 57, and bassist Jeff Ament, 60, played the record for the first time on Jan. 31 for invited guests at the Troubadour club in West Hollywood. “No hyperbole, I think this is our best work," Vedder said from the stage as he introduced the album.

The band spawned from the Seattle scene of three decades ago shows no signs of softening with age on the album, which leans toward their rocking side even more than “Megaton” did, with drummer Matt Cameron's pounding at the forefront.

The record, produced by Andrew Watt at Rick Rubin 's Shangri-La studio in Malibu, has been ready and awaiting release for about a year.

This story has been corrected to show that the name of Pearl Jam’s previous album was “Gigaton,” not “Megaton.”

Lollapalooza ’92: On The Road With the Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden

By Kim Neely

“H i, Jim. How’s your face?” asks Perry Farrell , stepping onto a tour bus that is parked backstage at the Shoreline Amphitheater, in Mountain View, California. It’s day 2 of Lollapalooza ‘s opening weekend, and aside from a surprise twenty-minute set on Lollapalooza’s second stage with his new band, Porno for Pyros, the fans at Shoreline haven’t seen much of Farrell. Behind the scenes, he’s seemed to be there but not really there, a laid-back apparition toting a jug of cheap red wine, blending in and out of the proceedings inconspicuously, always with that odd, half-dazed, I-know-something-you-don’t-know smile.

At the moment, Farrell is inquiring about the welfare of Jim Rose, the piratish ringmaster of the Jim Rose Circus Sideshow. Earlier, to the let’s-gawk-at-the-car-crash delight of some 7000 fans who had gathered around Lollapalooza’s small second stage, Rose had pressed his face into a mound of freshly broken glass and then grandly invited a few spectators to stomp on the back of his head. Now Farrell wants to know how he did it.

Lollapalooza Through the Years: 10 Iconic Moments in Style

“Am I right?” Farrell asks. “Is it arm strength?”

“No,” says Rose.

“No?” asks Farrell. “You really, like, settle yourself comfortably and let them press, hoping there’s not a jagged edge that will bust?”

“That’s exactly it,” says Rose. “What it is, man, is you gotta know your glass. You gotta know a wine bottle from a beer bottle from a Worcestershire-sauce bottle, and then you just hope.”

Farrell is enrapt, every inch the awestruck fan. Rose offers another pearl of carny wisdom.

“Mostly, the only thing in the glass is this area right here,” he says, touching a hand to his brow and then his cheek. “Your eyes are in the socket, so you’ve got that little bit of clearance. The only real pressure is on the cheeks and the forehead.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Farrell, frowning, considers this.

“But that’s half your face,” he says finally.

“Yeah,” says Rose, looking pleased.

“Well, fuck, man,” says Farrell. “We all do crazy shit.”

Was it crazy for Farrell to hope that he could top last year’s successful Lollapalooza tour? In terms of more-bang-for-your-buck entertainment, no.

“I have to admit there was probably a little skepticism after seeing the first one,” says Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder . “Nothing’s ever as cool as the first thing. But I’m telling you, I’m really proud to be part of this. We had a bad show yesterday, and the coolest part was realizing that it didn’t fucking matter, because there was so much to do. You realize, ‘Okay, so the bass guitar went out on two songs’ or ‘They couldn’t hear my vocals – big fucking deal.’ It’s so much bigger than just individual bands.”

Lollapalooza ’92 offers a much more impressive display of art, political information and general all-around weirdness than last year’s model. But what about the vibe? Was it crazy for Farrell to believe that the tour’s artsy, faintly revolutionary air wouldn’t be tainted the second time around by the stinking, hype-laden breeze of capitalism?

Maybe. Lollapalooza ’91 was the underdog tour that could, charmed by the homespun hippie idealism and I’m-a-freak-touch-me eccentricity that were Jane’s Addiction ‘s stock in trade. That it turned out to be big business seemed little more than a side effect, a happy bonus. But that was last year – before Nirvana went quadruple platinum, before Helmet was signed for a cool million, before fans who were hip to the Chili Peppers circa Freaky Styley started looking down their pierced noses at that cheesy, bandwagon-jumping Blood Sugar Sex Magik crowd. This year, everyone wants to be alternative, and Lollapalooza ’92 was viewed as a golden egg from the git-go. And the idea that the 40,000 white, suburban, middle-class kids thronging Shoreline this weekend see Lollapalooza as a means of, as Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil puts it, “affirming their alternativeness” – and that the tour’s organizers were banking on just that – is a bitter pill for some of the artists to swallow.

“Alternative is just a fucking label,” says Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready. “I don’t think we’re alternative; I just think we’re a rock & roll band. It’s amazing that you can have voter registration and condoms and smart drinks and everything. But I don’t like labels.”

Pearl Jam Announce 'Dark Matter' World Tour

Pearl jam preview new album with electrifying single 'dark matter', n.w.a, gladys knight score laughs, praise with lifetime achievement grammys.

“There’s nothing revolutionary about playing for big commercial monopolistic rock promoters for damn near forty bucks a ticket,” echoes former Dead Kennedys mouthpiece Jello Biafra, who was on hand to hang with his pals in Ministry . “There are some interesting organizations allowed to set up booths. That, at least, is a start for these suburban kids who are used to simply marching down to the cattle hall, staring at the icon onstage and then going home. But it’s still Vegas with a flannel face.”

“Don’t you have to be an incredible idiot to actually swallow some of the shit that’s presented to you?” asks Thayil. “Is it cynical to say, ‘I won’t swallow,’ and call something what it is? This whole tour is entertainment for the leisure class – there’s no pretending about that. All it is, is a guilt release for the establishment’s kids. I’m tired of the lie that alternative music somehow offers something that’s anticorporate.”

Yesterday, from the stage, Thayil’s bandmate Chris Cornell took time between songs to address another common gripe about this year’s festival. The moment the lineup was announced, detractors began grumbling about the lack of diversity on the predominantly male, hard-rock bill. “I’d like to apologize for all of us,” said Cornell. “My penis would also like to apologize,” he added, lowering the mike to his crotch and chiming, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” in a reedy Mr. Bill voice.

Photos: The Rise of Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam and More

Judging from the crowd response to Soundgarden ‘s and Pearl Jam’s sets, Cornell’s apology wasn’t necessary. But there’s no doubt that Lollapalooza ’92 is heavy on the testosterone; the bill is so overtly macho and feedback-oriented that the female-fronted Lush and the Scottish art-pop band the Jesus and Mary Chain had serious reservations about participating.

“We were a bit intimidated by the whole thing,” says Miki Berenyi, Lush’s neon-haired frontwoman. “We thought, ‘Oh, God, they’re gonna think we’re just a crappy little English pop band.'” As it turns out, Lush’s attack, aside from the ethereal vocals of Berenyi and guitarist Emma Anderson, is nearly as gritty as that of the Seattle stalwarts on the bill, and the Shoreline crowd has been receptive. “We thought they were all gonna be, like, Soundgarden fans, standing at the front giving us the finger,” says Anderson. “But it’s great.”

Asked whether they’ve made new fans of any of the other bands on the bill, there is an excruciating pause, and then both Berenyi and Anderson break up laughing. “The circus people like us,” says Berenyi.

The Jesus and Mary Chain haven’t gotten around to laughing just yet. “We got ourselves into this,” says vocalist Jim Reid. “I’m not saying it’s a bad thing. But it’s scary. It scares the shit out of us.

“The thing that worries me the most,” he continues in a soft brogue, “is that everything is like uh, uh, uh, motherfucker! uh, uh, uh, another motherfucker! A lot of what we do is kind of laid-back, a little soft. I don’t know if we’ve even got a set that fits this situation. You couldn’t go out there and do a ballad and get people stomping their boots to it. We’ve got a song called ‘Just Like Honey,’ and it’s one of our best songs. But if we did it out there . . .” The unfinished sentence hangs in the air, and Reid shakes his head wistfully. “We hinted at it yesterday,” he says. “We did songs similar, and those were the ones where everybody went, ‘Hey man, I could do with a hot dog.'”

“I Bugged off That Lifto,” Ice-T Is saying. “Lifto ties a brick to his dick.”

The rapper, who wowed audiences on last year’s Lollapalooza and is serving as an informal MC at the Shoreline shows, is referring to the bizarre shenanigans taking place out on Lollapalooza’s midway. The second stage at Shoreline is featuring Boo-Yaa Tribe, Cypress Hill, House of Pain, Sharkbait and a performance-art troupe known as Archie Bell’s Future Kulture and will showcase different local acts in each city. But the absolute must-see act is the Seattle-based Jim Rose Circus Sideshow, which does two performances daily. One of the Jim Rose attractions, the Amazing Mr. Lifto, a bald giant who takes the stage in black tights, high heels and a pink kimono, has become a favorite of the main-stage bands. His shtick is hanging various heavy objects from his pierced body parts, the items highest in shock value being the cinder block and the pair of steam irons he hangs from his penis and his nipples.

Among the other performers: the Torture King, who eats shards of a broken light bulb (holding a mike to his mouth, naturally, so you can hear every excruciating crunch) just to warm up. Paul the Sword Swallower is probably better known for what else he swallows – an assortment of live worms, crickets, slugs and – the biggest groan-inducing snack – maggots. Matt the Tube Crowley’s specialty is siphoning various glop into his stomach through a nose tube and then spewing it back out. Audience members have been known to drink beer that Crowley has regurgitated. Yummy.

Through it all, Jim Rose serves as a hip barker for the other acts – “A cricket! Lick it!” he shouts, as Paul the Sword Swallower smacks his lips over a bug, or “It’s science . . . . I am riveted!” Rose also spends a lot of time on the torture trail himself, his crowning achievements being the Human Dartboard (the darts are real – you can tell by the way they quiver when they hit his back) and the aforementioned face-in-glass spectacular.

Rose and his cohorts are drawing sizable crowds; most of the spectators appear to be more fascinated than grossed out.

“The show’s about body altering,” says Rose. “It should be interesting, but it shouldn’t be controversial. The stuff we’re doing is right out of the 1840s to the 1950s, stuff your great-aunt Betty used to watch. The difference is the way we do it – edgier, with a lot of energy and fast paced.”

What Rose fondly calls his “circus of the scars” is Lollapalooza’s oddest exhibit, to be sure. But there’s a lot more to see at this year’s festival – so much that seeing everything basically means seeing more than one show. Even fans who stay rooted in their main-stage seats for the twelve-hour music-o-rama absorb more than sun and long-term hearing damage: An electronic statistics board offers factoids during the set changes, ranging from the obscurely amusing (“Estimated percentage of nuts that squirrels lose because they forget where they put them: 50”) to the political (“Records don’t kill kids – bullets do”).

The art display is expanded this year; canvases and sculptures are scattered over the entire area. The Rhythm Beast, a Gargantuan interactive sound sculpture made of various bangable objects, seems to be a big hit with the fans. Among the thirty-some-odd visual artists traveling with the tour are Zippy the Pinhead’s creator, Bill Griffith; painter and airbrush artist Robert Steven Connett, whose gory, surreal images are striking but not for the squeamish; and Bruce Pollack, a foe of media manipulation who recombines familiar images to “shock and destabilize the traditional responses provoked by advertising” – typical of Pollack’s work is a billboard featuring the Visa and Master Card logos, a huge UPC code and the legend You Are Under Constant Surveillance.

There are stalls hawking everything from books to temporary tattoos (doing a booming business, from the look of things at Shoreline), virtual-reality displays and amino-acid smart drinks for the cyberpunk set, bungee-jumping at seventy-nine dollars a pop for the thrill seekers. For the charity-minded, there is the Safe Sex Wheel of Fortune, the proceeds from which go to local AIDS research organizations; fans take a spin to win CDs, backstage passes, condoms and turns in the Crush Cage, a structure set up next to the second stage that is filled with sledgehammers and smashable old televisions and appliances. “Wake Up Mr. President, What About the Homeless” is a test-of-strength meter, the proceeds from which are earmarked for the Coalition for the Homeless in each city.

And, of course, the political booths. From Rock the Vote to the Cannabis Action Network, dozens of organizations hoping to bend young ears for a moment are out in full force.

If any one issue dominates this weekend’s festivities, it’s censorship, and given the recent fracas over “Cop Killer” (not to mention that Body Count performed the song at last year’s Lollapalooza to nary an offended peep), Ice-T ‘s presence has been truly symbolic, inspiring more onstage commentary than anything else. During the first show, the crowd got two freedom fighters for its money when Ice-T and Jello Biafra took the stage together to introduce Ministry. Biafra let fly with a dig at Tipper Gore, then informed the crowd that he wasn’t going to vote for either presidential candidate. “That doesn’t mean I ain’t gonna vote,” he added, clarifying that he was going to pay much closer attention to Congress, state representatives and, especially, ballot initiatives.

“I figured the least I could do was give ’em a little bit to chew on regarding a certain weasel by the name of Clinton and his choice of an even worse weasel for a running mate,” says Biafra. “There was one guy in cutoff shorts and a ponytail flicking me off the entire time, but otherwise, it went over pretty good.”

But did any of it stick? Will any of the privileged kids here at Shoreline ever really be pissed off enough to wreak any havoc with the nation’s political system?

“I’ve tried to meet people and find out what their attitudes are,” says Ministry bassist Paul Barker, “and for the most part, it is like a middle-class morass. But if the idea is to invest in the future – I mean, we’re getting a generation of politicians now who grew up listening to rock & roll. So it’s certainly a changing-of-the-guards type of thing. In the short run, I don’t know how much impact it’s going to have – maybe it’s still just an all-day beer bash. But it could have a lingering effect.”

“This is about the largest crowd I’ve played,” says Ice Cube , cooling down backstage after his set. “I can’t wait to get to the 30,000s. I look on TV at the rock & roll videos – I like the concert videos, 60,000 or 80,000 motherfuckers out there just going crazy. As a performer, you would love to perform in front of that many people.”

Cube is having a good time. During both shows this weekend, he and his group, the Lench Mob, have had the entire Shoreline audience eating out of their hands. The spectacle of 20,000 white kids boogieing to fare like “The Wrong Nigga to Fuck Wit” and “How to Survive in South Central,” waving their hands in the air and being led in repeated chants of “Fuck you, Ice Cube ” has been the talk of the tour.

Cube had his own reservations about playing Lollapalooza, which is another reason for Ice-T’s presence this weekend. He showed up to lend Cube some been-there, done-that moral support.

“I knew Ice-T had Body Count out,” says Cube. “And I was like ‘Well, were they more receptive on your rapping or Body Count?’ He said: ‘Just go out there and do your songs, man, they love your shit. These are kids that buy your music but never had a chance to go to a rap concert. Just do your shit, have fun.’

“To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect,” Cube adds. “But when I did the first two or three songs and saw everybody was into it, I had to jump out into the crowd. They want you to get up there and go buck wild, you know what I’m saying?”

The fans at Shoreline aren’t the only ones who’ve flipped out over Cube. He also wins the prize for the highest number of cast members watching his set from the side of the stage. Some of the other artists – especially Chili Peppers bassist Flea – seem to be as caught up in the proceedings as the audience, and all of them have been singing Cube’s praises. “I think Ice Cube is like what Dylan was in the Sixties,” says McCready. “I see him in that kind of light.”

Cube’s presence has also sparked a fair amount of backstage debate about why he and the Lench Mob are the only black group playing on the main stage. Several artists zeroed in on the fact that the crowd was only as diverse as the bill.

“I thought Cube was brilliant,” says Thayil. “But it just made me realize how incredibly white and affluent the audience is.”

“Ice Cube’s the greatest – we love Ice Cube,” says Flea. “But I wish there was another black band playing, like an R&B act. As much as I love hip-hop, there’s no black bands playing anymore like all the bands we grew up loving – Funkadelic; Earth, Wind and Fire; the Ohio Players – there’s none anymore.”

“It smacks of fucking tokenism,” says Jim Reid.

“Rap music’s probably more popular in this country than rock at the moment, or at least as popular. Why the one fucking rap band on the bill?’

Cube prefers to see it as a start. “This is paving the way,” he says. “As rap is more accepted, and they see that everybody wants to see it just as much as they want to see the other bands, maybe Lollapalooza will add two rappers next year. Things like this expose people, and maybe people will better understand rap music, instead of hearing it from the media. They’ll say, ‘We went to the Cube concert, we had no problems, we had a good time.’ And that’s what I did, try to get up there and really give them an experience. Because this is an experience for me. I’ve never seen the Chili Peppers play or Soundgarden.”

A cacophony rumbles up outside the dressing room; Ministry, apparently, has just launched its assault. “Ministry is the loudest, craziest motherfuckers ever,” Cube says. “I met the lead singer – he’s buck wild, you know what I’m saying? This shit is just loud.” He points out a notice on the dressing room wall. “This shit says you can’t go over 98 decibels. These motherfuckers are at 140. They’re like ‘Fuck the fines, fuck everything.’ I love this shit. Anything hard-edged, anything parents want to ban and get rid of, I’m with that.”

Ministry’s gear had tongues wagging before anyone ever played a note. Some were impressed by the quantity; others were intrigued by the huge skeletons of an undetermined species that were flanking a backstage ramp like creepy sentinels when everybody showed up for rehearsals. What were they for?

As the band’s set yesterday revealed, they are mostly for Ministry frontman Al Jourgensen’s entertainment – he rides them across the stage like bony skateboards. That alone – the sight of the dreadlocked, sinister-looking Jourgensen zipping around on a rolling skeleton with a towel draped crazily over his head – is worth the price of a ticket. (“Actually,” says Paul Barker, “I have to keep my eyes open so I don’t get fucking broadsided.”)

Ministry initially turned down the offer to play Lollapalooza but reconsidered, according to Barker, because “part of our five-year plan was to have our own studio, and we still don’t.” Lured by the thought of partial funding for their own private Chicago Trax, the band members presented a list of demands to Lollapalooza’s organizers – one of which was that they be given a nighttime slot – and eventually a deal was struck.

“It’s kind of crass,” says Barker. “It’s difficult for us, because it’s a total compromise in many ways. All of a sudden we’re part of this package, and we don’t have any say-so in what organizations in various cities we play for. That’s the kind of thing we never want to relinquish control of. We’ve been burned in various places, and we never want to work for those fuckers again. So we have to eat our own words, and believe me, man , that’s not what we’re about.”

Yesterday, Barker and his vampirish band mates were grumbling – ticked off about the media circus at Shoreline and the fact that it wasn’t yet dark when their start time rolled around. But the mood lightened when twilight struck about midway through their hour-long set. “It’s no longer a picnic,” Jourgensen intoned from the stage. “You can put away the wine and cheese.”

Ministry changes its show nightly; yesterday the band drew primarily from Psalm 69, 1988’s Land of Rape and Honey and 1989’s Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste, also tossing in the version of Black Sabbath ‘s “Supernaut” that surfaced last year as a 1000 Homo DJs twelve-inch. The crowd ate it all up with relish; many in the audience appeared fairly well acquainted with even the newer Psalm 69 fare. On older songs like “Thieves,” from The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste, they had the timing down on every whip crack and drill-bit whine.

Coming after Ministry and Ice Cube, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have their work cut out for them; especially since they’re still working out the bugs with newcomer Arik Marshall, who stepped in after former guitarist John Frusciante abruptly quit the band in May.

“It’s a cosmically confusing, fucked-up situation to lose a family member like that,” says Peppers vocalist Anthony Kiedis, “and we didn’t want it to happen. Emotionally, it’s very sad and disheartening. But that’s what happened, and we had to carry on. That’s what he wanted, and that’s what we had to deal with.”

Marshall, from the sound of things, won’t have any trouble picking up the ball dropped by Frusciante. With only two Belgium shows with the band under his belt as a warm-up before the tour, he’s slipped right into the Peppers’ groove. The band’s set, which kicks off with “Give It Away” and zigzags through Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Mother’s Milk and The Uplift Mofo Party Plan, is a powerhouse affair shot through with the usual wacky touches, from the stage wear (Kiedis’s pants last night bore the slogan Save our Ass, and Flea wasn’t wearing any pants) to Flea’s falsetto, singsong a cappella turns. Much of the show probably leaves the audience battling vertigo, thanks to a revolving black-and-white pinwheel set up behind drummer Chad Smith that looks like it could hypnotize Texas in seconds. There’s only one way to top something like that – namely, to come out for your encore sporting a hard hat that shoots flames from the top of your head while you play “Crosstown Traffic.” Yes, they did.

It would’ve been tempting for the Peppers to bow out of Lollapalooza following Frusciante’s departure – or at the very least allow the incident to put a pall on the proceedings. But it’s clear that they’d rather concentrate on the positive aspects and just get on with it.

“There’s great things about a tour like this,” says Kiedis. “One of them is, we don’t have to sound check, so we can get lots of rest. Another is that we get to make new friends, develop new musical relationships.”

Whether he realizes it or not, Kiedis has just touched on the only real reason that any of the acts on the bill wanted to play Lollapalooza in the first place.

“I was standing between Ice-T And Ice Cube, and Perry Farrell was playing basketball right behind me,” says Eddie Vedder. “When the fuck did I ever think that would happen?”

Two days into the tour and tenuous bonds are already forming. Last night, at the hotel where the bands are staying, Ministry and Boo-Yaa Tribe wrested the equipment away from the salsa band playing in the lounge and proceeded to systematically destroy the amps. Tonight, during the Chili Peppers’ set, Boo-Yaa Tribe, Ice Cube and Ice-T came up for a jam. Ask the band members about it, and one right after another, they’ll tell you that that is why they’re really here.

“There’s a real camaraderie amongst the bands and crew, the people who are putting on the show,” says Kim Thayil.

Vedder concurs. “There may be media shit flying around, some band may hate some other band,” he says. “But when it all comes down to it, and we all hang out together, we know we’re all going through the same shit.”

“The key to this tour working is groups coexisting,” says old-timer Ice-T. “If you take one group on this tour and they’re assholes, they won’t make it. There can’t be any outsiders. What I got out of it, more than just performing, was learning about the groups. I ended up being friends with Siouxsie and the Banshees and the Butthole Surfers; me and Henry Rollins are now like best friends. Now, Cube knows the guys in Ministry, he was hanging out with the guys from Pearl Jam. That’s what this shit’s about.

“Maybe that’s why I came,” he adds. “Being an alumni member of this thing, I wanted to see if it was gonna work, so I’d know there was a chance for it to happen next year. All these people are gonna be connected to this tour that way.”

Is it just about music then? Jamming? Has Lollapalooza’s change-the-world political vibe been lost in a blur of musical bonding and clever marketing? Was Perry Farrell talking to a brick wall yesterday when, at the close of his Porno for Pyros set, he told the crowd, “We will inherit this earth – it’s ours . . . It’s ours . . .”?

Farrell isn’t denying that Lollapalooza has to some extent gone the way of Doc Martens and flannel shirts – mainstream. But he’s not quite ready to see it as a plain old rock show.

“What Lollapalooza II has proved,” Farrell says as the last of the fans are leaving Shoreline, “is that there is a serious market for a youth counterculture. That’s the bad news. The good news is that these people will sooner or later be in positions of prominence, and we have taken them to school.”

Pearl Jam Posters

Back in 1995, we had a modest idea to create a few screen-printed posters for some of the upcoming summer shows. By the time 1998 rolled around, we were loaded for bear and determined to pull something off that no one had ever done before, creating a unique poster for every stop on the tour, 40+ in total. A few sleepless nights and last-minute runs to FedEx and we pulled it off. Here we are, almost 25 years later and nearly 300 posters alone for this one band, who trusted us enough to try something extra ordinary.

Pearl Jam Return: New Single, Album, World Tour Details

A fter debuting their upcoming album at a private event at Los Angeles’ Troubadour on Jan. 31 but withholding nearly all details from publication, Pearl Jam is making a lot of noise today (Feb. 13). The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers have revealed “Dark Matter,” the first single and title track from their April 19 Monkeywrench/Republic release, and announced a world tour, beginning May 4 in Vancouver.

The 11-track follow-up to 2020’s Gigaton was produced by Andrew Watt, conceptualized in July 2021 at his Beverly Hills, Ca., studio while he was working on Eddie Vedder’s Earthling and largely recorded at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La over the course of three weeks of sessions last year. It can be pre-ordered here .

“Dark Matter” is a powerful opening blast built on a series of descending riffs, a rhythmic cadence recalling both Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock’n’Roll” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady,” a stuttering, processed guitar figure reminiscent of the band’s 2002 song “You Are,” a wild, screaming solo from Mike McCready and an intense, age-defying vocal from Pearl Jam’s 59-year-old-frontman.

“Denounce the demigods / king diamond to discard / deploy the dialog / your word against the law,” he sings before the chorus, which carries the repeated couplet “it’s strange these days, when everybody else pays for someone else’s mistake / this blame takes shape, still everybody else pays for someone else’s mistake.”

Sonically, “Dark Matter” slots in somewhere between the more tightly wound Pearl Jam of Vs. and the sleek, angry rockers found on later albums such as Binaural . Vedder’s trademark turn-of-phrase is evident during the zig-zagging bridge, where he commands, “No tolerance for intolerance or / no patience left for impatience no more / no love lost for lost loves / no sorrow for the unaccountable.”

Watt encouraged Pearl Jam to write and shape the material with all five members in the same room, and that spontaneous approach is immediately evident on Dark Matter . The album opens with the driving, major-key rocker “Scared of Fear,” with Vedder reminiscing to a subject only he knows, “We used to laugh, we used to sing, we used to crash, we used to believe.” And while arena-ready songs such as “React, Respond” and “Running” find Pearl Jam at their heaviest on an album in some time and “Waiting for Stevie” has an almost Singles -era classic Pearl Jam feel, Dark Matter also dials down the bombast with nods to the chiming, acoustic-flavored sound of the late Tom Petty on “Wreckage” and “Got To Give.” There’s even a song about parenting, “Something Special,” which Vedder said at the Troubadour was co-written with touring member Josh Klinghoffer.

“We're still looking for ways to communicate. We're at this time in our lives when you could do it or you could not do it, but we still care about putting something out there that is meaningful. No hyperbole - I think this is our best work," Vedder said of the new album at the Troubadour. "I couldn't be prouder of us as a band,” said bassist Jeff Ament, who praised Watt’s “encyclopedic knowledge” of the Pearl Jam catalog and his boundless enthusiasm for getting the band to work more quickly and collaboratively.

Meanwhile, the first North American leg of the Dark Matter trek hits the west coast in May, including the band’s first shows in their Seattle hometown since 2018. It will be followed by a U.K./European visit in late June and early July, encompassing stops at Dublin’s 40,000-capacity Marlay Park and London’s 63,000-capacity Tottenham Spur Stadium, among others.

A second round of North American shows gets underway Aug. 22 in Missoula, Mt., and after hitting familiar locales such as Chicago’s Wrigley Field and New York’s Madison Square Garden, wraps with Sept. 15 and 17 blowouts at Boston’s Fenway Park. In November, Pearl Jam will tour New Zealand and Australia after a 10-year absence from the region.

Support acts are Deep Sea Diver (North America leg 1), Glen Hansard (North America leg 2), former the Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft (Dublin, London) the Murder Capital (U.K./EU) and Pixies (Australia/New Zealand). Tickets will be available through Ticketmaster registration today through Feb. 18, with the actual on-sale set for Feb. 23. Members of Pearl Jam’s Ten Club fan organization are eligible to participate in a separate pre-sale, details for which can be found here .

The Dark Matter album packaging features light painting art by Alexandr Gnezdilov, who utilized a large, handmade kaleidoscope to write each letter with a special flashlight to create a pearlescent effect.
