Shore Excursion Review: Statue Cruises from New Jersey

Explore two of the most iconic attractions in the world- the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. With a short jaunt via Statue Cruises from New York or New Jersey, you can take a journey

Statue Cruises

Share this post:

There are plenty of things to do and see if you are sailing from the New York Metro area on a cruise. Prior to our recent Bermuda Cruise on Anthem of the Seas , the Princess and I ventured off to explore two of the area’s most iconic attractions- the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Even though we were staying in New Jersey, we were able to access these attractions without having to venture into NYC. Statue Cruises  offers convenient departure points at both Battery Park in New York and Liberty State Park in New Jersey. This excursion, located minutes from our hotel in Jersey City, offered an entire afternoon of history and selfies. We highly recommend you add this historic experience to your vacation either before or after your next cruise from this area.

Statue Cruises

Getting to statue cruises and making reservations.

One of the departure points for the Statue Cruises ferry is  Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey. This park is located about 30 minutes from the Cape Liberty Cruise Port. If you arrive early, budget some time to walk along the water and grab pictures of the historic Central Railroad of New Jersey, a hub of transportation and commerce from the early 20th century. Unfortunately, the terminal is still closed from damage done during Hurricane Sandy.

Great skyline pictures of New York are also possible from the park. There is also the “Empty Sky” 9/11 memorial, along with other trails and outdoor areas that you and the family could spend hours enjoying. Unfortunately, given our time of arrival and the chilly weather, we did not venture around the park or snag too many pictures.

If you plan on taking this tour pre-cruise or post cruise, you should make reservations in advance, especially during the summer months. Tickets are limited, and you can not purchase tickets to go inside the Statue of Liberty once on site. If you want to walk all the way up to the crown, you will need to reserve that at least 3-6 months in advance. We were not able to get crown access as we purchased our tickets 6 weeks prior to our trip.

We were able to get tickets to walk up to the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, but the only time slot available that made sense for us was 1pm. If you book ahead of time, tickets are sold on the hour from 8am to 3pm for the Statue Cruises. The price for Pedestal tickets is $18 an adult and for Crown tickets is $21 an adult. Both tickets include trips back and forth on the ferry, as well as access to Ellis Island and the audio tour of both sites. However, once you exit the ferry at either Liberty State Park in NJ or Battery Park in NY, you can not return to the sites.

Boarding the Statue Cruises from New Jersey

Given that we were driving into the area for our pre-cruise day, our plan was to check into our hotel, the Westin Jersey City , then head over to Liberty State Park. With unanticipated traffic, we were already running late so decided to drive straight to the park. Parking is available for $7 and was plentiful, but this might be related to the time of year we were visiting (end of April).

It is recommended that you arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time to allow for security and boarding of the ferry. There is “airport style” security; you will have to go through metal detectors, and all bags will be screened. Given the time of year, we were able to zip right through security, but we assume the lines would be much longer during peak times. Quickly through security, we waited outside in line for about 10 minutes until the next ferry arrived.

Touring the Statue of Liberty

Pulling into Liberty Island, we of course ran to the starboard side of the ship to get some pictures of the one and only Lady Liberty. Once docked, we grabbed the audio tour device and embarked on our journey of independence. We did not realize how many people just walked around the grounds as they did not have tickets to go inside to the statue.

We started from the beginning and followed the audio tour for a few minutes, but just ended up abandoning it for the most part. We decided to do our walk-up to the pedestal first and then continue our own self-guided walk around the rest of the island afterwards.

Providing our tickets at the entrance, we had to go through another round of security to enter the base. Upon entrance, there is a replica of the famous torch in the lobby and signs pointing you to the top. More recently, elevators have been installed up to the pedestal but not all the way up to the crown. Who needs the elevator when you can walk the 176 steps up to the pedestal. While she struggled to do so, the Princess finally made it to the top!

We were able to get some great views of the surrounding area and tried to get a few selfies with the Statue which proved too difficult from this vantage point. Expecting a bit more, we spent maybe 10 minutes outside until we agreed to head back down and see the rest of the island. It didn’t help that it was quite windy and cold.

Statue Cruises – Ellis Island from the Pedestal

Back down on solid ground, we walked around the front of the Statue taking a few pictures of the surrounding area, as well as the informative signs and displays for about 30 minutes. You could spend hours here if you read everything in detail and listen to the accompanying audio tours. But, given the weather and time constraint, we headed back toward the ferry landing to do our mandatory tour of the gift shop prior to hopping the ferry over to Ellis Island.

There are two different shops offering typical souvenirs and a cafe serving prototypical fast food. This area was quite busy, so we can only imagine what it’s like during the busy season. We were able to catch a ferry to Ellis Island around 3:20pm, spending about 90 minutes on Liberty Island.

Moving Through Time at Ellis Island

Arriving at Ellis Island, we had about an hour to spend before the museum closed. I could have spent more time here as the museum was so fascinating. Your ticket includes entrance to the Immigration Museum and a 45 minute audio tour. The Museum is in the Main Building of the old complex, with medical units, housing, and other facilities across the way. This part of the island is currently off limits. Leave it to the Princess to think that it would make for an amazing haunted Halloween attraction in the fall.

You enter the museum in what is known as the Baggage Room, for obvious reasons. We headed to the audio tour booth for our device and map (see below). Given our limited time to explore, I asked where we should go. The employee recommended the Great Hall, on the second floor, so we followed the crowd up the stairs into this central area.

Statue Cruises ( source )

This was the central processing area where immigrants would come to be examined and either gain entry into the United States or be sent back home. It is a very humbling experience to stare at the Great Hall and imagine what it must have been like for those willing to risk everything to immigrate here, and this is only the beginning of the adventure.

DSC05940 (Copy)

If you walk through the Great Hall, you can explore Through America’s Gate, a series explaining each step in the journey from coming to Ellis Island, to processing, intelligence testing, doctor examinations, dining, mental testing, and hopefully getting into New York as an immigrant. The museum is very well done with artful storytelling and relics that truly transport you to the time period.

On the other side of the second floor is the Peak Immigration Years exhibit. This area details the life and experiences of the early 20th century and the wave of immigration that occurred during those years. For cruisers, this exhibit offers a glimpse into the ships that transported passengers, with a few familiar names like Holland America Line. It is really something to imagine- thousands of people crammed on these ships for weeks at a time to come to America. And there wasn’t even a buffet or a swimming pool!

Admittedly, we did not get to see everything in our hour visit to Ellis Island. The first and third floors also contain additional exhibits that you could easily spend hours viewing. We did make it to the third floor to see the Treasures from Home exhibit, a collection of garments donated by families of immigrants from all over the world. There are also a few smaller exhibits, including the Ellis Island Chronicles, which use models to demonstrate how the island has been transformed over time.

Statue Cruises

With time running out, we were not able to really tour any of the exhibits on the first floor, including the new exhibit, Peopling of America, or watch any of the short films played in the theaters. Closing out the museum, we caught the last ferry at 5:15pm for the short jaunt back to Liberty State Park.

While a bit rushed, a tour of these landmarks with Statue Cruises was certainly one of the highlights of our trip. If you are into history and want to explore all that these great sites have to offer, then we suggest taking a morning ferry to allow for a full day of sightseeing.

Statue of Liberty

The ONLY Way to Liberty Island

Caveat emptor.

Traveling can be unforgettable, but not always in a good way.  Circumstances can leave you frustrated, disappointed, or even cheated out of time, money, and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation does not want this to happen to you! Read on to ensure a successful trip to Liberty and Ellis Islands!

Don't Get Fooled, Again

Unfortunately, every year visitors from around the world – and around the corner, because locals aren’t immune to ticket scammers – are cheated out of visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

Sales for other attractions may be misleading, sending people to ferries that only sail around the Hudson River, never reaching the actual monuments. In some cases, the experience begins and ends with a bus ride from Manhattan to New Jersey, adding hours to the failed adventure.

Just ask Alec Baldwin ! And read on…

Unfortunately we booked this cruise a little too late to be able to walk up the statue of liberty. If you want to walk up to the crown you need to know months in advance! If you want to walk up to the pedestal you only need about 2 months. We planned this trip last minute so we were not early enough for either and because of this we chose to not even get off on liberty island. You get some great views on the boat ride so we saw no point to get off. And we still don't regret it. Hot Tip! If you want to be right up and close to the statue on the boat you want to board from the stating point on the right hand side of the boat. Leaving liberty island you want to the on the left side. We did however get off on Ellis Island and had a blast looking up our ancestors that has walked those halls before us.

Be ready for some long lines, waiting outside in the heat among large crowds, and super hot on the first and 2nd levels of the cruise . They do sell cold drinks and chips on the boat. Cash only. The ride between destinations are fairly short & view is amazing. Best on the top deck.

My husband and I got the first ferry out to get there and we're told to show up 15 minutes before to check in. We got there 15 min early and did not check in until 9am, our ticket time. You have to throw any drinks and food away prior to boarding. Security is strict but once you pass it, it's pretty seamless. You can sit anywhere on the ferry and the ferry has a little cafe where you can buy coffee, drinks, hot dogs, snacks, and souvenirs. Once you get to the Statue of Liberty, you can spend as much time as you want. Depending on your ticket, you will be allowed to go up the statute but I hear you have to buy those months in advance. There is a little restaurant on the island as well as a souvenir shop. You can hop on the ferry to return when you are ready. Overall I would go again and enjoyed myself :)

statue city cruises new jersey reviews

Overall the ferry cruise was fine - nothing fancy, but they did have snacks and drinks if you wanted to purchase them. I'd say its not the perfect trip only because they cram so many people into each ferry. We were on the first ferry at 9am, which seem to have less people than later ones as we prepared to leave the islands, but it still felt quiet full. On the flip side, security was efficient and they got things moving quiet well despite the volume of people.

The security line is more strict than an actual airport. I guess the Statue of Liberty is a higher risk to national security than actual flying nowadays. I put everything that would trigger the metal detector in the tray and went through without beeping. They saw my wallet and a lump of napkins in my pockets and made me put those items in a tray and go through x-ray again. It is a metal detector. Everything that would have triggered the metal detector was already in the tray. I passed. This has been my routine for TSA since 2001, but it wasn't good enough here. I'm glad to have finally gotten to visit the Statue of Liberty, and now my kids have too. We didn't bother stopping at Ellis Island, as the wait to get off and line up for the ferry again was not worth our time. There are better things to do in NYC. Done, and no need to go back.

Waste of a Vacation Day !! 1. I attached video of myself and other patrons who waited over 2 1/2 Hours for a Ferry to bring us back from Ellis Island to NYC, While waiting in the NYC Summer Heat and no staff to be found EVER, they would pop up when a ferry would arrive then disappear, im sure they know it's wrong to have people stranded waiting for a ferry ( where is management and national parks management, they need to know this is happening OR perhaps they should be forced to endure what myself and many others did) 2. Is my review posted on Trip Advisor 8/5/23. 3. Is image that shows entirety of trip should have been "3 Hour Duration". We arrived with reservation at 11am and with out of control ferry wait times did not get back to NYC till almost 7pm. #DO BETTER !!!

We were a little late for our tour but they were kind enough to let us on. The security screening here was more strict than the airport security. I recommend sitting towards the back of the boat so its easier to exit when the boat docks. They have a small snack bar inside with drinks, pretzels and some souvenirs. Overall it was a pleasant experience.

statue city cruises new jersey reviews

I was researching how to see the Statue of Liberty and this was the only cruise that can take you there. I had some issues ordering my tickets online so I was forced to download the city cruise app and then it worked. It's nice they email you the tickets and you can add it to your Apple wallet if you have an iPhone. This is located in battery park. They scan your ticket and you proceed to the security check in which is inside a tent. The security check point has metal detectors and was the only place they were strict about wearing and keeping your mask on. On the website and in the email confirmation they remind you that it's mandatory to wear a mask for the entire experience even on the ferry and when on the island. I was hesitant to even book this but I really wanted to see it up close and personal. Fortunately they didn't enforce wearing a mask outside while in line or while on the ferry or when you get to Ellis island. They should make it optional. Mostly everyone is vaccinated and I am sure I'd people were worried about Covid they wouldn't be doing all this touristy stuff. The ferry leaves every 30 minutes. We were able to get some snacks they had hot dogs, hard/stale pretzels, chips and Powerade/soda drinks. Overall being on the ferry was the best part we took some good shots of the Statue of Liberty

So, you want to see the Statue of Liberty or go to Statue of Liberty Island! Statue City Cruise is the only cruise that will take you to Statue of Liberty Island. The other cruises just go around Statue of Liberty Island. I suggest buying tickets online or on-site. There are three prices: one is just the ferry ride, to the Statue of Liberty Island and to Ellis Island and back, The other is the ferry ride, to the Statue of Liberty Island, reserve to walk up the Statue of Liberty Pedestal and to Ellis Island and back and the other is the ferry ride, to Statue of Liberty Island, walk up to the Statue of Liberty Crown and to Ellis Island and back. The price difference between the three options is around 30 cents. The reason why they have those options is to restrict the number of people at one time going up the pedestal or going up to the crown. Yes the tickets are timed tickets. You do need to show up at least 45 mins in advance. Right now Clinton Castle is under renovation so to board the ferry, you need to enter from the side of the tents (that are setup beside Clinton Castle). Note that Statue of Liberty Island is a National Park so you do need to go through security. So don't bring too much stuff. Yes they have security here. Anyways, the ride is inexpensive and I highly recommend it. If you are in NYC, this is a must see and must do activity (go to Statue of Liberty Island). Also note that this ferry ride is not a fancy ferry ride. You can board this ride from New Jersey or from New York City.

Dangerous!! Do not do this tour or use this company unless you are ok to stand exposed, without water, without bathrooms, without shade, for hours to both get on and off the islands. They are dangerously under supplied with boats and it's a disaster waiting to happen. The crew and staff are aware and encouraged us to complain. It's criminal.
