About the cruise

The Viking Orion will take passengers on a cruise called 'Across the Bay of Bengal', which will depart from Mumbai and reach Bangkok after a 16-day long journey. A Georgia woman was overtaken by emotion as she pleaded to doctors about having separate waiting rooms for miscarriages and expecting parents.

India Batson, 29, who lost two children back to back, admitted it “absolutely sucks” when having to see other pregnant women in the waiting room.

“I would like to make a recommendation to OBGYN offices to have a different waiting area if you are there for a miscarriage, an ectopic pregnancy, a ruptured ectopic pregnancy,” she said in a TikTok on March 15.

“If you’re there for a loss I’d like for there to be a separate waiting room than the regular waiting room,” she continued. “Because sitting in that waiting room, next to tons of pregnant women, while you wait to go back just to get bloodwork to see if their HCG is back to zero, sucks. Like it absolutely sucks.”

A teary-eyed Batson then took a short pause before venting to viewers about how difficult it was during her recovery stages.

Batson also explained how frustrating it is to return to the same place — that twice informed her of her miscarriage — for bloodwork to check her HCG (Human chorionic gonadotropin) levels.

Miscarriages are the loss of a woman’s pregnancy before the 20th week, the Mayo Clinic said .

For pregnant women in the US — an estimated 26% of pregnancies end in miscarriage, according to a report from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

“Moreover, 80% of early pregnancy loss occurs in the first trimester. The risk of miscarriage decreases after 12 weeks gestation,” the report added.

Batson recalled when she had a “rush of emotions” when finding out her two children no longer had a heartbeat — triggering her trauma on both devastating days.

“Golly, Preganacy is hard,” she said right before the video, which had over 2.8 million views, ended.

Viewers jumped to the comment section to express their support for Batson’s take, sharing similar experiences in waiting rooms.

“Sitting there when a couple walks out smiling with ultrasound pictures was like a punch in the gut,” a viewer said.

“As a very pregnant woman I support this so much. At one of my last appointments, there was this sweet girl there who was crying her eyes out and it wasn’t fair that I was there in front of her,💔” a commenter empathized.

“THIS. And a separate exit route. I had a missed miscarriage. I had to walk through the waiting room sobbing after learning of our loss! I just put my head down and tried not to make eye contact,” another supportive commenter wrote.

Thailand poised to legalise same-sex marriage after parliament passes bill

Lawmakers overwhelmingly vote to make country the first in south-east Asia to recognise same-sex unions

Lawmakers in Thailand’s lower house of parliament have overwhelmingly approved a marriage equality bill that would make the country the first in south-east Asia to legalise equal rights for marriage partners of any gender.

Four hundred of 415 lawmakers present voted for the bill on Wednesday and footage from inside parliament showed people standing and applauding afterwards.

In a post on X, Danuphorn Punnakanta, a spokesperson for the majority Pheu Thai party and president of the committee overseeing the marriage equality bill, said: “The right to equality in Thailand has begun today. It is the beginning, and further legislation for people’s rights and freedom will follow.”

The bill must now be approved by the senate and endorsed by the Thai king. After this endorsement, the bill would be published in the Royal Gazette and become law after 60 days.

If that happens, Thailand will follow Taiwan and Nepal as the only countries in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage.

The Pheu Thai post added: “Today is considered a good sign that Thailand will be the first country in south-east Asia to have equal marriage laws. It raises the level of Thailand in the eyes of the world.”

In a statement published prior to the vote, Mookdapa Yangyuenpradorn, human rights associate at Fortify Rights, said: “Thailand is close to becoming the first country in south-east Asia to ensure marriage rights for LGBTI+ couples, which is a cause for celebration; however, certain shortcomings in the current draft must be addressed to ensure all rights extend to LGBTI+ persons.”

Versions of the legislation had debated by the national assembly since December, before the cabinet of the prime minister, Srettha Thavisin, sent the bill to Parliament.

Four draft bills on same-sex marriage were put forward by different political parties, and these were then consolidated into one, though the text is not public yet. This context will be key.

Yangyuenpradorn added: “Before the final reading of the bill by the lower house, it is imperative that parliamentarians eliminate the presence of gendered language in the current draft that may limit rights for LGBTI+ persons, particularly rights for LGBTI+ couples with children.”

According to the Pheu Thai post, Punnakanta’s committee in charge of consolidating the draft bills “considered that some sections of the motion contain wording that is inconsistent with the current social context. Therefore, the wording has been adjusted to be appropriate for gender equality”.

Same-sex marriage legislation has been discussed in Thailand for more than a decade, but political turmoil and disagreements on the approach prevented the issue from moving this far.

In 2020, the constitutional court ruled that the country’s marriage law, which recognises heterosexual couples, was constitutional while recommending that it be expanded to ensure the rights of other types of couples.

At this stage, Thailand is well ahead of the rest of south-east Asia on same-sex marriage. Vietnam abolished penalties for holding same-sex marriages in 2013, but does not legally recognise such unions. Malaysia, Myanmar, and Brunei, on the other hand, criminalise same-sex sexual activity.

Madrid Spain Masters 2024 badminton: PV Sindhu falls short in the quarter-finals

The two-time Olympic medallist saved five match points but Thailand’s Supanida Katethong eked out a win in a 77-minute-long contest.

Despite a valiant effort, former world champion PV Sindhu lost to Thailand’s Supanida Katethong in the Madrid Spain Masters 2024 badminton women’s singles quarter-finals on Friday.

Sindhu, 11th in the badminton rankings , went down against her world No. 17 opponent 26-24, 17-21, 20-22 in a contest that lasted 77 minutes.

A win would have seen Sindhu make her first semi-final on the BWF World Tour since returning from injury earlier this month.

Katethong surged ahead with an 8-4 lead in the opening game. However, the Indian badminton player staged a comeback to win seven straight points and went into the break leading 11-8.

Few errors from Sindhu helped the Thai shuttler steal the momentum and establish a two-point advantage at 16-14. Katethong was on the brink of winning the first game but Sindhu saved two game points to first equalise at 20-20 and then saved three more to eventually win the game which extended till the 50th point.

The second game, again, was a tight one. The scores were tied at 13-all when Katethong took a decisive lead with three straight points. The Thai shuttler then thwarted a late comeback from Sindhu to take the match into the decider.

Sindhu had a healthy five-point opening at 10-5 in the decider. However, Katethong equalised at 12-all before seizing the initiative and opening up a 20-15 lead.

Sindhu mounted a late comeback to save five match points but eventually fell short of a place in the semi-finals after losing the next two points.

This was Sindhu’s fourth loss against Katethong in nine meetings. Sindhu had suffered an injury to her left knee in October last year while playing against Katethong and was sidelined for the next four months.

In the mixed doubles category, B Sumeeth Reddy and N Sikki Reddy marched into the semi-finals by defeating Lisa Ayu Kusumawati and Rehan Kusharjanto 14-21, 21-11, 21-17. They will battle Indonesia’s Rinov Rivaldy and Pitha Mentari for a place in the final.

Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa, seeded third in the women’s doubles, lost 21-13, 21-19 against sixth seeds Lee Chia Hsin and Teng Chun Hsun of Chinese Taipei.

MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila will face Junaidi Arif and Yap Roy King of Malaysia in the men’s doubles quarter-finals later in the day.
