A bird's-eye view over a town. A white clocktower emerges from one of the buildings. There is a manicured, lush green space with trees, and paved pedestrian walkways.

Sitting on Lake Champlain and framed by the Green Mountains and New York’s Adirondacks, Burlington — Vermont’s most populous city, at just under 45,000 residents — draws visitors for its natural beauty, farm-to-table food scene and progressive sensibility. Among the long-time producers and makers (many of whom appear at the city’s Saturday farmers’ market, which relocated in recent years), Burlington has a crop of new bars, cafes and wellness experiences, including a lakefront sauna. The city is also a jumping-off point to discover gems in neighboring Addison County, and to explore the Lake Champlain region, which is an almost sacred experience in fall, when the landscape unfurls into a spectacular temple.

There are no state regulations in Vermont against short-term renters on Airbnb, so the sharing economy is definitely an option if you are looking for an alternative to Burlington hotels.

4 Day Burlington Itinerary

Here is an itinerary for four full days in Burlington, Vermont

Day 1 in Burlington, VT

I like to explore my bearings on my first day anywhere—far and wide! So I suggest you hop on a bike, and explore the shoreline and all the outdoor recreation Burlington has to offer. After you’ve recharged with lunch, take that exploration to the lake with a cruise.

Here’s the breakdown for day one in Burlington.

  • Have a delicious breakfast at Kru Coffee . I got the spicy vegetarian egg sandwich on an English muffin and it was delicious. You could also try Penny Cluse if it is open (depends on which days you are in town).
  • Bike along the Burlington Greenway bike path along Lake Champlain. If you are staying at the Hilton Burlington Lake Champlain, bikes are free to borrow !
  • You could honestly spend all day biking! There are beaches to explore along the Greenway and other recreational activities.
  • Enjoy lunch at Istanbul Kebab House . I recommend splitting a mezze platter and some kebabs!
  • If you have extra time, use it to stop by Church Street Marketplace and get your bearings (I like to take mental notes of what I’d like to visit later).
  • Take a relaxing sunset cruise along Lake Champlain on the Spirit of Ethan Allen . They serve dinner on the Spirit of Ethan Allen cruise if you want to order food ( and it is delicious! ) You can also just order a picnic charcuterie cheese board and then dessert like I did. Sunset cruises are 2.5 hours and board at 6:00 pm.

Vermont photos: biking in a park by the beach, eating a sandwich on Burlington's church street, taking a cruise on Lake Champlain

Day 2 in Burlington, VT

On day two, I recommend you spend it tasting another breakfast spot’s menu, grab fresh juice to go, and then head over to Shelburne (part of the greater Burlington area) for a museum & wine experience.

Here’s the breakdown for day two in Burlington.

  • Enjoy breakfast and the amazing blessing that is fresh baked goods at August First . We loved this place so much we came twice during our last visit. I highly recommend the avocado toast with everything seasoning and the “Eat the East” breakfast sandwich (it has maple curry aioli and cumin onion chutney, OMG).
  • Grab some fresh cold-pressed juice from The Vermont Juice Co. up the street. I get the Brain Boost or Berry Beetiful!
  • Head down to Shelburne for two amazing activities! The Shelburne Museum and then wine tasting at the Shelburne Vineyard.
  • The Shelburne Museum could honestly be a whole day affair; tickets actually are valid for two days because of this. I recommend lots of sun coverage!
  • Wine tasting at the Shelburne Vineyard down the road is picturesque and perfect for a couple’s date or friends activity. Be sure to reserve your spot in advance.
  • Wind down and enjoy dining by the lake with a food truck vibe and locally sourced ingredients at Farmers and Foragers Dockside . The fish tacos were delicious.
  • Dessert anyone? Head over to Church Street Marketplace and join the queue of people excitedly waiting for their Ben & Jerry’s ice cream treat!

Day 3 in Burlington, VT

Spend the third day of your Burlington getaway enjoying many of Burlington’s best perks and quirks! I recommend enjoying this day shopping, browsing, and treasure-hunting street murals.

Here’s the breakdown for day three in Burlington.

  • Did you know you can enjoy breakfast at the acclaimed Hotel Vermont (even without being a hotel guest)? It is a fee-based buffet breakfast at the Juniper but you can enjoy their outdoor patio while you dine.
  • Explore downtown Burlington and beyond! Shop for chocolate gifts at Lake Champlain Chocolates , try out natural wines at BIPOC-owned wine shop Wilder Wines , and don’t hesitate to strike a pose along Church Street Marketplace .
  • Experience Burlington’s beautiful sunset on Lake Champlain with dinner and drinks at Spot on the Dock . The cocktails are fun and creative, and the crowd really fills in the dockside lounge area.

collage photos: easting in a patio, going Vermont shopping at night, eating tacos by the water

Day 4 in Burlington, VT

Your last full day in Burlington deserves a bit of a hike with all that culinary goodness. Visit the states first State Park, a local eatery in North Burlington, and a brewery in South End. Thanks to Burlington’s quaint size, it isn’t as far away from each other as it sounds. 🙂

Here’s the breakdown for day four in Burlington.

  • Go hiking in Mt. Philo State Park and climb the mountain’s near 1,000-foot summit for picnic opportunities and epic views of the Adirondacks hovering over a glittering Lake Champlain under the sun.
  • Do not miss adding Cafe Mamajuana to your list of foodie musts! This amazing woman-owned restaurant opens at 4:00 pm until the food runs out so plan accordingly! The perfect lunch spot for Afro-Dominican food (as an Afro-Boricua, I approve of their pastelillos and maduros)
  • Relax and kick back at Zero Gravity and The Great Northern for delicious food and brews! If you want to keep the night going, be sure to catch some live music at Red Square on Church Street Marketplace.

Vermont collage: hiking, eating, bar

Have an extra day in Burlington? There’s tons more you can do!

I recommend enjoying the arts scene in South End, indulging in gastronomic bliss at Hong’s Chinese Dumplings, and trying your darndest to get a reservation at James Beard nods, Honey Road and Hen of the Wood.

Why Go To Burlington, VT

Burlington thrives on all things offbeat, with a cosmopolitan feel that belies its relatively small population. Pedestrian-only promenade Church Street bustles with local shops, restaurants and street performers, while Burlington breweries turn out some of the most sought-after beers in New England. The two local colleges bring an annual infusion of student energy, filling downtown venues that still sometimes groove to the sounds of Phish (yes, that Phish), a Burlington jam band that remains beloved. The Queen City also makes a great starting point for exploring nearby communities. In historic Shelburne, find lakefront walking at Shelburne Farms then explore eclectic artwork at the Shelburne Museum , where kids (and their adults) can play in a steamship restored to its century-old glory. Head from the Champlain Valley into the Green Mountains to hike through bird-friendly forests or sample creative ice cream at the Waterbury's Ben and Jerry's Factory .

Burlington, VT Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Burlington may be during the summer months of June, July and August, as they're ideal for exploring the city and surrounding mountains on hiking trails and bike paths . Also scenic is leaf-peeping season, which generally kicks off by the end of September and lasts through late October. Weather can get messy in November, March and April, but that period also brings unbeatable hotel rates and far fewer crowds. Nearby ski areas like Stowe , Bolton Valley Resort and Smuggler's Notch are generally open by mid-November; peak snow season ramps up in December and lasts through February or March.

It's a college town Burlington swells with students each fall, and the city's schools – the University of Vermont and Champlain College – help keep the city vibrant.

Pick up a paper The free local newspaper " Seven Days " is a weekly resource for news, dining recommendations and info about the city's ever-changing festival schedule.

What to Eat

Sure, you can buy a scoop of Ben & Jerry 's ice cream at the international chain's Burlington shop, but there's more to Queen City dining than pints of Cherries Garcia. In fact, most locals spend their summers craving maple creemees, instead. The distinctive soft-serve ice cream sweetened with Vermont syrup generally comes spiraled onto cones and is seasonally available at takeout windows and snack bars around the city. Burlington has a wealth of microbreweries , too, many of which serve farm-to-table versions of comforting pub fare – poutine and burgers abound alongside Vermont's classic hazy IPAs. At the high end are James Beard Award–recognized menus of small plates using ingredients sourced from nearby farms; cultivating relationships with growers is the height of gourmet chic in the Burlington food scene. From cheddar to raclette, locally produced cheese is a highlight – look for Vermont's many award-winning cheesemakers listed by name on restaurant menus. Or, think food trucks: The mobile gourmet vendors show up on Church Street Marketplace , the Waterfront and at the South End Get Down , a weekly summer food event with music and jubilant crowds.

The open-air Church Street Marketplace is a hub of bustling activity in downtown Burlington, featuring more than 100 shops and restaurants.

If you have a car handy, you may want to take advantage of Airbnb and VRBOs that dot that lakeshore and offer impressive vistas without being far from the fun.

The Best Time of Year to Visit Burlington

Burlington, Vermont has something to offer travelers at any time of year. While the winter can see bitter temperatures and a loss of fall foliage, there are several fantastic ski resorts within proximity. Burlington is a great place to base yourself when you’re not carving up the mountains.

Day 1: Church Street, Campus, and Cycling

When beginning your travels through Vermont’s largest city, begin on beautiful Church Street. The main drag of Burlington is a car-free sanctuary with shops and restaurants in abundance. While only four blocks long, the street is packed with things to see and do.

At any time of year, you may stumble upon a gathering of locals and travelers for a festival or live performance. The hungry restaurant-goers spill out onto the paths, creating a lofty atmosphere perfect for walking around and catching your first glimpse of life in the city.

travel to burlington vermont

If you’ve traveled all morning, stroll down the street and pick a place to eat that piques your interest. Or spend some time jumping between arts and crafts stores, while making your way to the street’s centerpiece, the First Unitarian Universalist Church. From anywhere along Church Street, you can admire the bell tower before enjoying the beautiful architecture up close.

One store you must stop by on your journey along Church Street is the iconic Frog Hollow Craft Center. For over four decades, the store has been welcoming curious guests, eager to see the best of Vermont artists and artisans.

Since the beginning, Frog Hollow has collaborated with over 500 local artists along with creating dozens of craft courses and arts classes. As you wander in, you will be captivated by the wonderful gallery that is always changing and promoting new work. This may also have to do with locals and travelers alike taking their favorite piece home with them.

Aside from the standard painting, you will discover a world of caricatures, glasswork, pottery and exceptional photography.

travel to burlington vermont

From Church Street, make your way to Main Street, which rises steadily behind the downtown area towards the campus of the University of Vermont. The hilltop campus, which first welcomed students in the late 18 th century, offers superb views of Lake Champlain.

Over time, many prominent members of the local community built their stately homes above the busy downtown and waterfront area, choosing to forego lakeside views for higher elevation. On your way to the campus, you’ll pass well-preserved homes and mansions that date back over a hundred years, providing excellent examples of pristine New England architecture.

travel to burlington vermont

Later, when exploring the University of Vermont Campus, make a beeline for the impressive Williams Science Hall. The large red-brick structure is a striking sight to see and sits high upon the campus’ hill

Aside from exploring, there is another stop you should make on your walk through campus. That being the Fleming Museum of Art. The museum is home to over 20,000 artifacts, artworks and special collections. They combine to cover many eras of history and locations around the world.

You can explore exhibits which highlight works and objects from around the United States, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and even Ancient Egypt. The African and Egyptian exhibits are particularly striking, with sculptures, media and contemporary interpretations of history on display. You will also find hundreds of Ancient Egypt artifacts, including a mummy and a coffin.

Also on display are prominent local artists along with an important exhibit on Native American art and culture, covering much of the country.

On your way to our next activity, head back through Church Street and take in some of the local street art. The main one being a mural called ‘Everyone Loves a Parade!’ by Pierre Hardy.

travel to burlington vermont

After witnessing Lake Champlain from the campus, finish your day by exploring the shorelines in more detail. One of the best things to do in Burlington, Vermont, is to tackle the Burlington Bike Path. The paved path stretches along the stunning shoreline for miles, and is a popular place of exercise for locals.

In total, the path is 7.5 miles (12km) one-way, making the return trip a bit difficult on foot. But if you have several hours to spend, you could challenge yourself to do the full trip from downtown Burlington to the beautiful North Beach and back.

Going for a ride is likely to be the best option, and if you don’t have one handy, you can pick on up at North Star Sports or Local Motion .

After dinner, if you feel like keeping the night rolling, you will have plenty of bars and live music venues to choose from. Burlington, after all, is a college town. So if class is in session, you can expect a happening scene, especially on and around Church Street.

For something casual and fun, head to the Archives for craft beer, cocktails and vintage pinball. If you want to catch some live tunes, make your way to Nectar’s for local acts and cheap eats.

Where to Eat On Your First Day

For lunch on your first day in Burlington, head to the local favorite, Sweetwaters. The diverse menu and large space makes it the perfect place for larger groups to gather, with something delicious for everyone.

If you’re undecided on your dinner plans, make a trip to the new top restaurant in town, Pascolo Ristorante. Serving upscale Italian cuisine with a wonderful evening atmosphere, you can’t go wrong.

Day 2 Homesteads, Road Trips, and Stowe

Before or after breakfast, a great way to begin day two in Burlington is to explore the local Farmers Market. In the warmer months of the year, Burlington puts on a bustling market along the open spaces of Pine Street, just out of downtown.

With crowds and lack of parking, enjoy a pleasant morning stroll through the picturesque town and arrive at the market on foot. Vermont’s reputation as an environmental state is on full display at the vibrant market, with excellent local produce and amazing food to try. Who knows, you may even want to skip breakfast to leave more room in the belly.

Beyond fresh food, you’ll love walking among the local community who gather and create an exciting market. If you want to pick up a souvenir or memento of your travels to Burlington, this is also a great place to do it.

After completing the rounds at the Farmers Market, it’s time to get on the road. A big day of exploring the surrounding countryside awaits! First stop is the Ethan Allen Homestead. Found on 1400 acres of gorgeous New England land, the homestead was once home to a famous member of the Revolutionary War, Ethan Allen. Under the banner of New Hampshire, Allen fought off New York’s attempts to claim the land, leading to the creation of Vermont.

For obvious reason, Allen became a local hero and his homestead has been restored and preserved for you to enjoy. The various buildings house historical and archaeological exhibits. While casual hiking trails meander through the woods with interpretive signage along the way.

travel to burlington vermont

Before leaving, wander across to the Ethan Allen Park. Home to an observation tower, enjoy immaculate views of the lake and city.

Next up, a road trip to Stowe! Rather than take the quick 45-minute journey along the interstate, choose the scenic route. Head north towards Cambridge where you can join route 108, aka Smuggler’s Notch. If you can handle the winding mountain roads, then you and the crew will be in for a visual treat.

travel to burlington vermont

Along the way, climb the side of Vermont’s highest peak, Mt Mansfield via the notch. Smuggler’s Notch is so narrow that it closes during winter because snowplows cannot meander their way past the massive boulders and along the road. The cliffs rise to one side, and giant rocks dot the roadside. Throughout is bright foliage and an immersive driving experience.

Be sure to stop by Smuggler’s Cave information center to learn about the natural phenomena that created such dramatic scenery. You can also explore the caves where smugglers once hid to escape captivity.

travel to burlington vermont

Once you’ve arrived in Stowe, you’ll be treated with a beautiful afternoon in a classic Vermont town. Flanked by the towering Mt Mansfield, Stowe is famous for being one of the United States’ first ski towns.

Surrounded by stunning scenery, wherever you look, you’ll enjoy simply walking through the city and experiencing the quiet and peaceful setting. There are several galleries to explore, including the Helen Day Arts Center. Another top activity is riding the gondola at Stowe Mountain Resort and make the journey to the Mt Mansfield Peak.

25 Best Things to Do in Burlington VT: Local Gems & Good Eats

Craft beer, local artisans, delicious food, and outdoor fun — where should you start? Follow this guide to the best things to do in Burlington VT!

Does “Vermont” conjure images of covered bridges, pastoral farm scenes, snow-covered slopes, or small village skylines accented by pristine white church steeples? Yes, that is quintessential Vermont. But Burlington is something different.

Burlington is Vermont’s largest city, but with a population under 45,000, that’s not saying much. But while it is small in size, it is large in character.

Burlington is the side of Vermont where craft beer-loving hipsters share co-working space with start-ups building rockets. Where University of Vermont college students mingle with millennials at the local coffee shop after yoga class. And where Brooklyn transplants blend with multi-generation farmers and makers to create a youthful city that still feels very…Vermont.

Yes, it gives off some Portsmouth, NH vibes, but with more outdoorsy, college-town, local-focus characteristics, than a touristy, wannabe Portland feel.

If you are looking for a fun weekend getaway destination, put Burlington on your list, especially if you can combine a stay with some time in the Green Mountains or enjoying Lake Champlain .

I’ll cover where to stay , great places to eat , and the best things to do in Burlington , Vermont — no matter what season you visit!

Lake Champlain and lighthouse by Burlington VT

Getting to Burlington, VT

Burlington is located in northwestern Vermont, on the banks of Lake Champlain, with the peaks of New York’s Adirondack Mountains clearly visible across the lake. Not too far from the Canadian border, the easiest way to get to Burlington is by flying into Burlington International Airport (BTV), which is conveniently located just three miles from downtown. Alternatively, you can take a 7.5-hour train ride from New York City’s Penn Station on Amtrak’s Ethan Allen Express.

If you prefer driving, Burlington is about a 4-hour drive from both New York City and Boston , making for a great Vermont road trip , and it’s only a 2-hour drive from Montreal . Once you are there, Burlington is a very walkable city, although you may want to have a car to take some day trips or to reach some of the places I include below.

Best Things to Do in Burlington, Vermont

Given its location in northwestern Vermont, it is no surprise that what there is to do varies by season. However, many of the things to do in Burlington are relevant in any weather, making it a four-season destination — which in Vermont is defined as winter, mud season, summer, and fall/stick season.

If you love craft beer, good food, shopping, live music, and outdoor activities, you are going to love Burlington Vermont. Plus, if you are visiting with a family, there are so many fun things to do in Burlington with kids too!

Stroll Through the Church Street Marketplace

Church Street Marketplace Things to do in Burlington VT

The first place locals will tell you to go when visiting Burlington is the Church Street Marketplace , a brick-paved outdoor pedestrian mall lined with shops, restaurants, and music venues. This four-block area covers Church Street from Main to Pearl Street in the center of downtown Burlington.

There are some beautiful historic buildings, along with a mix of local boutiques, bookshops, and a scattering of national brands such as Black Diamond, Fjällräven, and Helly Hansen.

travel to burlington vermont

One thing you will notice when walking around Burlington is that the locals prefer to buy locally. Local coffee shops over Starbucks. Local cafes over fast food. And local boutiques over big-name brands.

Church Street Marketplace is also home to over 30 restaurants, bars, and cafes, from women-owned Honey Road (Mediterranean), Black Cap Coffee and Beer, and Leunig’s Petit Bijou (bakery), and Burlington Bagel Bakery. Church Street Marketplace is a perfect starting point for exploring Burlington.

Bike or Walk on the Burlington Greenway

Burlington Greenway bike path

The Burlington Greenway Bike/Walk Path runs for eight miles along the shores of Lake Champlain, connecting many major parks with residential neighborhoods and downtown Burlington commercial districts. Vermonters are hardy folk and the Greenway is in use year-round for walking, running, biking, and even cross-country skiing (but follow the rules).

You can easily hop on the Burlington bike path at Waterfront Park, a short stroll from the Church Street Marketplace. When you realize how much food you are going to be eating in Burlington, you will be happy about the exercise! There are a few places around town to rent bikes, including North Star Sports in Church Street Marketplace and Local Motion Bike Rentals (open seasonally.)

Take a Cruise on the Spirit of Ethan Allen (seasonal)

Spirit of Ethan Allen cruise ship

If you are visiting Burlington during the warmer months, the Spirit of Ethan Allen offers a magnificent way to enjoy Lake Champlain and get views of the city from the water. The Spirit of Ethan Allen offers daily, narrated sightseeing cruises in the summer months, and a more limited schedule during the shoulder seasons.

There are many options to choose from including 90-minute daytime cruises, buffet lunch cruises, 2 – 2.5 hour sunset sailings, dinner cruises (including Friday night lobster buffets!), and even a “Champagne on Lake Champlain” boozy brunch cruise on Sundays.

Check out the Artists and Makers at The Soda Plant

travel to burlington vermont

All around Burlington, you will find old mills and factories that have been restored and repurposed to support the city’s thriving arts scene and entrepreneurs. The Soda Plant , in the South End Arts District, is such a building. Once the Coca-Cola bottling plant, the space has been reenvisioned to support over 35 producers, makers, and artists.

On a stop at the Soda Plant, you will find locals choosing freshly-pickled kimchi from Pitchfork Pickle, or browsing at the many shops from jewelry designers like Jennifer Kahn, artists, and other makers.

Shop your Way Down Pine Street

Barge Canal Market

From the Soda Plant, you can wander down Pine Street, through the South End Arts District, shopping at the quirky and cool boutiques, gift shops, antique stores, and home furnishing shops along the way. Should you get hungry or thirsty, there are plenty of options to satisfy you, including Citizens Cider and Myer’s Bagel Bakery, or it is a short drive to Zero Gravity Brewery or The Spot, a Hawaiian-themed brunch cafe.

Watch Glass Blowing at AO Glass

pitchers from AO Glass in Burlington VT

Simon Pearce may have put Vermont on the map for glassblowing, but AO Glass has taken up the mantle and creates beautiful glassware and home decor. The studio at the AO Glass Factory Store on Pine Street is open to the public six days a week for shopping and glass-blowing demonstrations. Just be sure to check the website for hours.

Go Wine Tasting at Dedalus

Daedalus wine bar Burlington VT

Dedalus is a wine shop, market, and wine bar located in the Southern Arts District right near AO Glass. Locals can join the wine club, but everyone is able to sign up for and attend one of the many special events that take place monthly and groups can arrange for a private tasting with one of the very knowledgeable and personable staff members.

If none of that works out, make a reservation at the wine bar, which features light bites and wines from small producers around the world.

Enjoy a Craft Beer (or Cider) Flight

Beer flight from Burlington Beer Company

Vermont leads the country in the number of craft breweries per capita, with over 15 per 100,000 people! It is no surprise that the Queen City, Burlington, also the state’s largest city, leads the pack. Queen City Brewery , Switchback Brewing Company, Burlington Beer Company, Foam Brewers, Zero Gravity Craft Brewery, and Magic Hat Brewing Company are just a few.

Most specialize in hazy IPAs and New England Pale Ale, but you will also find sours, porters, stouts, and all kinds of special maple concoctions. Vermont is definitely a place for beer lovers but if that isn’t you, it is also up-and-coming on the cider scene with players like Citizen Cider in Burlington.

A perfect way to get to know the Burlington beer scene is on a beer tour with City Brew Tours ! I’ve taken one of their tours in Boston and it is a fun way to get insight into the local beer scene.

Fill up on Breakfast (and Maple Syrup)

Grey Jay deviled eggs

Burlington is a town with great breakfast options…from traditional greasy spoons like Henry’s Diner to hip bakery-cafes where cell phones and laptops aren’t allowed like August First to Mediterranean brunch joints like The Grey Jay .

You also have Vermont mini-chains like The Friendly Toast and The Skinny Pancake. If you need to cure a hangover, try the famous breakfast sandwich at Kountry Kart — the Triple Threat Shiner is heaped with bacon, sausage, ham, three eggs, three hashbrowns, and three layers of cheese. The nice thing about breakfast in Vermont — none of that fake maple syrup stuff.

Listen to Live Music

Flynn theater

Did you know that the band Phish got its start in Burlington at Nectar’s Lounge? That isn’t the only spot for live music. The Flynn Center has a 1930 art deco theater that has been home to a variety of live performances and a major venue in Burlington’s annual Jazz Festival, which has been running for 40 years. The Jazz Festival, which takes place in early June, features renowned artists in venues across the city.

You can also see live music at ArtsRiot , Red Square, and Radio Bean, which also hosts theater productions or poetry readings.

Chillax at a Local Coffee Shop

Like many cities, Burlington seems to have a coffee shop on every corner. Except, instead of it being Starbucks or Dunkin’, Burlington is buzzing with local coffee joints. A few worth putting on your list to visit when you are in town include Kestral Coffee Roasters, Speeder & Earl’s, Oynx Tonics, Kru Coffee Collective, Vivid Coffee Roasters, and Cosmic Grind.

Taste Chocolate at Lake Champlain Chocolates

Choux pastry and chocolate ganache

Lake Champlain Chocolates is a family-run company that has been producing premium-quality chocolate using the finest ingredients since 1983. They are a Certified B Corporation focused on social and environmental sustainability initiatives. They work closely with other Vermont producers for ingredients and use only Fair Trade Chocolate to produce over 1 million pounds of deliciously tempting products each year.

The flagship store is located on Pine Street, in the location of the original factory. This location is about to get a facelift to expand the cafe and offer visitors new glimpses into the innovation kitchen. In addition to chocolate truffles, chocolate bars, and specialty and bulk items, the cafe offers decadent and rich hot chocolate and coffee drinks, along with pastries and ice cream to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Eat Ice Cream at Ben & Jerry’s

Ben & Jerry's in Burlington VT

This area of Vermont is prominently associated with a few famous people…Bernie Sanders (btw, you can buy copies of his famous mittens at the Vermont Teddy Bear Company store) and Ben & Jerry. Ben & Jerry’s has a scoop shop in downtown Burlington, off the Church Street Marketplace, if you just want some ice cream.

However, if you want the full experience, take a day trip over to Waterbury and visit the Ben & Jerry’s Factory and Ice Cream Shop . It is worth the 30-minute drive to get a glimpse of the first factory to produce those delicious concoctions. The Factory is closed on Sundays and Mondays and it is helpful to book your tour online in advance. Make sure to leave time to visit the Flavor Graveyard out back.

Have Cocktails at Paradiso Hi-Fi Lounge

Vinyl albums at Paradiso Hi Fi Lounge

If cocktails are more your vibe, the Paradiso Hi-Fi Lounge is a listening lounge and restaurant, featuring craft cocktails in a lounge/speakeasy environment. Paradiso has a collection of 1,500 – 2,000 high-quality LPs (often from original pressings) that heavily feature jazz, international psychedelic and progressive rock, classic rock-and-roll, electronic and ambient music, and R&B.

Visit a Maple Sugar House (seasonal)

Palmer's maple sugar house

If you love all things maple, then head to Burlington in mid-to-late March during maple sugaring season. Palmer’s Sugarhouse , just a few minutes outside of the downtown area, is a popular spot with visitors and locals alike.

On sugaring weekends, they feature live music, fresh pancakes, and so many maple products including maple cotton candy, maple sugar, maple cremees, maple cookies, and sugar on snow (maple syrup on shaved ice or snow so that it freezes like taffy.) And, apparently in Vermont, they enjoy sugar on snow with a pickle on the side to balance out the sweet.

If you don’t visit during March, don’t worry, you can still purchase maple syrup and other Vermont products throughout the year both in town and at local farms like Dakin Farm , just south of Burlington on Route 7.

Visit the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum (Seasonal)

The Ethan Allen Homestead is a historic site that was built by Ethan Allen, a prominent figure in the Green Mountain Boys, a group of Vermonters who fought in the Revolutionary War. Today, visitors can explore the restored house and learn about the life and times of Ethan Allen and his family.

There are also exhibits on the history of the Green Mountain Boys and their role in the American Revolution. In addition to the historic house, the homestead features beautiful gardens and nature trails that offer visitors a chance to enjoy the natural beauty of Vermont. The site is open from May 1st through October 31st.

Enjoy Dinner with a View

Hummus platter at Water works

In the summer, it is easy to have dinner with a view of Lake Champlain at Spot on the Dock or Splash at the Boathouse in Waterfront Park. A good view in the winter months is a little harder to come by, but if you can get a table by the window at Waterworks in nearby Winooski, you will have a lovely view of the waterfalls. Go with friends because the food is so delicious, you are going to want to share.

The Essex Resort & Spa, which is about 20 minutes from Burlington, makes a great romantic getaway , especially for foodies as the resort has a top-notch culinary program. However, even if you don’t stay at the hotel, you can still enjoy a wonderful dinner with a view at Junction . Request to sit at the Chef’s Table and you can watch Chef Nicole and her fabulous team prepare your dishes, which makes you appreciate each bite even more.

Browse the Burlington Farmer’s Market (seasonal)

From mid-May to late October, Pine Street is packed with people going to the Burlington Farmers Market . Over 70 farmers, specialty food vendors, and artisans fill the market every Saturday with the best and freshest that Burlington has to offer.

Take Pictures in Front of Burlington’s Street Art

Bird mural in Burlington

The brick walls of downtown Burlington are lined with street art and beautiful murals. Go on a mural hunt and take photos in front of a few to remember your trip! Check out the public arts website on the Burlington City Arts website.

Kayak or Paddleboard on Lake Champlain (Seasonal)

In the summer, Lake Champlain because a playground for water sports such as boating, water skiing, kite surfing, windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boarding. You can even go scuba diving to see some shipwrecks from the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War.

You can rent Hobie Cats, wind surfboards, or stand-up paddleboards at the Burlington Surf Club. Once the lake warms up, you can go swimming and enjoy the sandy beach at North Beach Park.

Enjoy Farm-to-Table Dining

Duck eggs at Hen of the Wood

Hen of the Wood is a true Vermont dining experience featuring farm-to-table cuisine in a rustic yet refined setting. This is the hardest reservation to secure in Burlington, so book early. Your dinner may be pricier than the more casual places in town (for delicious pizza at a good price, try American Flatbread or Pizzeria Verita), but the creativity, presentation, and exceptional ingredients make it an experience worth splurging for.

Enjoy Hands-on Learning at ECHO Leahy Center

The ECHO Leahy Center for Lake Champlain, located on the Burlington waterfront is one of the top Burlington attractions. Part interactive science center, part aquarium, and part children’s museum, the ECHO Leahy Center is fun for the whole family, but geared toward the under-12 set.

The museum is dedicated to inspiring and engaging visitors with the ecology, culture, and history of the Lake Champlain Basin. It features over 100 interactive exhibits, including live animal encounters, hands-on science activities, and multimedia presentations that explore the connections between the lake, its inhabitants, and the people who live and work in the region.

Visit the Animals at Shelburne Farms (Seasonal)

Shelburne Farms is a 1,400-acre working farm and National Historic Landmark located just south of Burlington in the town of Shelburne. The Farm is open to the public from May through October and offers a variety of activities and attractions for visitors of all ages, including the formal gardens and Children’s Farmyard, as well as educational programs and events that focus on sustainable agriculture, environmental stewardship, and conservation.

You can also hike on the many trails that wind through the property or sample the farm’s award-winning cheese and other locally sourced products.

Step into History at Shelburne Museum (Seasonal)

Shelburne Museum

The Shelburne Museum is a world-renowned museum located in Shelburne, just 15 minutes south of Burlington. It was founded in 1947 by the collector and philanthropist Electra Havemeyer Webb. The museum’s collection features over 150,000 works of art, design, and Americana displayed in 39 historic buildings set on 45 acres of scenic land.

Some of the museum’s most popular attractions include the Ticonderoga steamboat, a 220-foot-long ship that once sailed on Lake Champlain, and the Webb Gallery, which showcases a stunning array of American folk art. Other buildings on the museum’s expansive grounds include a one-room schoolhouse, a covered bridge, a lighthouse, and a variety of historic homes and barns. The museum is open from May through October.

Take a Tour of the Vermont Teddy Bear Company

Vermont teddy bear company

Just a few minutes from Shelburne is another attraction that will thrill the kids…the Vermont Teddy Bear Company. The company handcrafts nearly 500,000 bears a year and has been a Vermont staple for 35 years.

They are open every day and offer factory tours throughout the day. Visitors can also shop at the gift shop or even create their own bear.

Tip: If you are visiting Burlington on a “workcation”, you can purchase a day pass to Hula, a stunning and vibrant co-working space on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain. This facility offers a coffee shop, cafe, kitchen, privacy booths, meeting spaces, open-plan workstations, and daily activities for members. Day passes are free for the BIPOC community on Fridays.

Where to Stay in Burlington

There are many options in downtown Burlington but if you enjoy boutique hotels, Hotel Vermont is everything you would hope for. The lobby bar is popular with locals and guests, including the outdoor patio in the summer. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, equipped with locally-made products from the soap to the mugs to the Vermont Flannel Company robes.

Hotel Vermont patio

Each floor has a beverage station with a still and sparkling bottle refill station, an electric tea kettle, mini-fridge with milk, and a deluxe coffee and espresso maker. Guests can even borrow snowshoes in the winter and utilize the Peloton in the fitness center. A thoughtful touch is the bedtime menu, featuring hot toddies, milk and cookies, or a Vermont Teddy Bear. The plush beds make it easy to fall asleep, but the aromatherapy diffuser and custom scented oil makes your stay even more comfortable.

While Burlington has so much to offer year round in terms of beer, food, and small city fun, it really shines in the summer when you can fully enjoy its setting on Lake Champlain. Summer is also hopping on the waterfront with many festivals and concerts like Ben & Jerry’s Concerts on the Green, the  Burlington Food & Wine Festival , and the Vermont Brewers Festival .

For family fun, check out Church Street’s  Festival of Fools , a weekend of street performer fun up and down the marketplace and the  Champlain Valley Fair .

The narrow state of Vermont is filled top to bottom with charming and quaint towns at every turn. Burlington is the most populated city in Vermont with just 43,000 residents, but Montpelier is the state capital.

It may not be as beautiful as Woodstock , or as adventurous as nearby Stowe , but Burlington is Vermont’s center of culture, arts, nightlife and shopping.

The college town, which runs entirely on renewable energy, is the perfect place to spend a day or two on a New England road trip , particularly in Fall when it is at its most spectacularly picturesque.

Church Street and its four block marketplace are the most famous attraction in Burlington. Shopping, eating and drinking in the marketplace is one of the most fun things to do in Vermont , but there’s much more to see and do here on the banks of Lake Champlain.

Let’s get stuck into 10 of the best things to do in Burlington, Vermont!

Best Things To Do In Burlington, VT

Stunning Lake Champlain with fall foliage colors in trees from an overlook in Burlington VT

1. Make The Most Of Lake Champlain

Lake Champlain is a long and narrow fresh water lake forming much of the New York – Vermont border and stretching up into Quebec, Canada.

The lake has a colorful history, including playing an important role in the Revolutionary War of the 1770’s and 1780’s, and then again in 1812 in a battle near Plattsburgh on the Western shores of Lake Champlain.

Today the lake can be crossed by ferry between Burlington VT and Port Kent NY, which makes for an easy day trip to Ausable Chasm or further into the Adirondacks.

Back in Burlington, the lake is a focal point for activities, hikes with viewpoints, a small marina and numerous lakeside parks. At the very least, a picnic in one of the parks is a must-do when visiting Burlington in Summer. Don’t forget your swimsuit if the sun is out!

Speaking of the sun, sunset is one of the best times of day to visit the lakefront. West facing views over Lake Champlain toward the setting sun make a relaxing sunset stroll the perfect way to end the day.

Did you know that in 1998 Lake Champlain became the sixth US Great Lake for a period of just 18 days before the Senate Bill was rescinded?

2. Soak Up The Atmosphere Along Burlington’s Famous Church Street

Church Street is Burlington’s most famous attraction, top place to visit and best photography location. The red-brick pedestrian only street is filled with restaurants, shops and tourists.

If you’re into photography, the classic up-street shot with the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Burlington Church at the end is unmissable. The best images are taken in the evening when Church Street illuminates under artificial lights.

The entire length of Church Street is effectively an open air mall called ‘Church Street Marketplace’.

You will find historic buildings and architecture, year-round festivals, dozens of places to eat and drink, endless retail shops and a wonderfully positive buzz in the air.

No matter where you stay in Burlington, or what else you plan to do in town, you will naturally gravitate to Church Street each day for breakfast, lunch, dinner or a spot of shopping.

3. Explore The Ethan Allen Homestead Museum

Ethan Allen led an interesting life in the US northeast. He began with farming and iron works but became a leader in the ‘Green Mountain Boys’, a militia group opposing British New York and New Hampshire.

Allen and his boys would repel any attempt by outside surveyors to settle in the area now known as Vermont and this resulted in a price on his head. Later he bought up land that became Burlington and sold it for huge profit, against the laws of New York.

Allen then led his Green Mountain Boys to capture Fort Ticonderoga on the southern shores of Lake Champlain, without a single shot being fired. Raids in Quebec failed and he was captured by the British, kept prisoner on ships and in Pendennic Castle in Cornwall, Southwest England.

Eventually he was released as part of a prisoner exchange and played a role in the formation, growth and politics of Vermont’s formation and early prosperity.

His fame and notoriety had grown, and after his death he was remembered as a fierce supporter of Vermont.

Today, his final home on the Onion River which is now called the Winooski River is the focal point of the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum. You can take guided tours of the homestead, walk the gorgeous grounds, hike to the river and learn about Allen’s intriguing life.

4. Enjoy Awesome Views Over Burlington From The Top Of Ethan Allen Tower

Just a mile away, you can park up in 60-acre Ethan Allen Park and walk along various trails surrounded by trees.

At the center of the park you will find Ethan Allen Tower, a 40 ft tall monument built of stone in the style of a castle or stand alone turret.

Climb a narrow metal staircase inside until you reach the top. A 360 degree viewpoint provides excellent views over Burlington and Lake Champlain.

The viewpoint is most popular at sunset in Summer or anytime in Fall when Autumnal colors are glowing. Expect colorful trees for foreground, Lake Champlain middle ground and New York hills as background.

Ethan Allen Park is a great place to take a relaxing stroll through forested land but don’t miss the views!

5. Ride Burlington Bike Path From Waterfront Park To Grand Isle

Taking a ride along Burlington’s bike path, also known as The Burlington Greenway, is one of the best and most popular things to do in town.

The paved path follows Lake Champlain’s shoreline for 8 miles and connects many of Burlington’s lakeside parks. If you have time and are up for a long ride, follow the Island Line Trail further North.

You will cycle across a very narrow strip of land called the Lake Champlain Causeway and take the Local Motion ferry to Grand Isle. The bike ferry only crosses a short section between solid ground and asks for a small donation.

There are plenty of bike rental places in or near Waterfront Park, including green ride bike share.

You will be able to take awesome photos when cycling across the causeway!

6. Learn At ECHO Science And Nature Museum

The ECHO Leahy Center for Lake Champlain is the perfect place to visit in Burlington if you are traveling with younger kids. They will love interactive displays and presentations about fish and other marine life.

There are loads of 3D movies, fish tanks, educational info boards, hands on learning and fun learning opportunities. A major focus of ECHO is to educate about the local natural environment, mainly Lake Champlain in Burlington.

Maybe not one for older couples or groups but definitely a rainy day option for families!

  • Adults: $18, Children: $14.50, Ages 2 and under: Free
  • Hours are 10am – 5pm, 7 days a week.

7. Taste Lake Champlain Chocolate At The Burlington Flagship Store

In Burlington’s vibrant artsy South End neighborhood lies Lake Champlain Chocolates’ flagship store. Lake Champlain Chocolates has been a locally run business using locally produced ingredients to create superior chocolate since 1983.

Until recently, there was a great tour you could take of the factory chocolate production line. The factory has moved to a different location and no tours are currently running. Hopefully they will pick this back up soon?!

Instead, you can still watch a video of the old factory tour, sample hundreds of delicious chocolate varieties and learn all about Lake Champlain Chocolate through interactive information boards.

You can snap up ‘factory seconds’ at great prices. The chocolate pieces may not be perfectly presented, but they sure taste the same!

8. Be Surprised By Vibrant Fall Foliage In Burlington, VT

Burlington might not be the first place you think of when planning a New England Fall Road Trip itinerary. The likes of Stowe, Woodstock and Manchester in Vermont attract thousands of tourists at the beginning of October.

However, if you time it right at the very end of September and into the first week of October, Burlington VT will be one of the surprise packages on your Fall foliage hunt.

Just because it is a larger town, it doesn’t mean there aren’t any trees. We were blown away by how radiant the colors were in Burlington compared to a few days earlier in Lake Placid NY.

There’s a lot of luck involved in timing it right for peak colors and the window is very small.

Among the best places in Burlington VT to see the colors are Ethan Allen Homestead, Ethan Allen Tower and cycling on the bike path out of town.

The key to finding a unique fall photo in or near Burlington is to jump in the car and drive around countryside roads nearby. Try to get to an elevated position so you can look back over the town with colors popping on trees below.

Need a hand planning your New England fall road trip? Our popular 40+ page New England Fall Road Trip Guidebook includes the 10 best places to visit (including Burlington VT) and 8 example itineraries ranging from 5-14 days to help you plan a successful leaf-peeping vacation.

9. Take A Day Trip To Stunning Stowe, VT

Although technically not a thing to do in Burlington VT, a day trip to Stowe is something you can’t miss if you have more than just a few days to spend in the area.

Stowe is an Alpine-style mountain resort town with hikes, waterfalls, skiing and a famous white church.

In Fall, photographers from around the world descend upon Stowe to photograph the church and other parts of the stunning valley at the base of Mount Mansfield.

Covered Bridges in Vermont are extremely popular and you can find a handful of worthwhile bridges to visit near Stowe. Plus, the original Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream factory in near the small town.

The 36 mile drive from Burlington to Stowe will take around 45 minutes along I-89.

We recommend driving over Smugglers Notch, dropping down into Cambridge and stopping at Brown’s River Covered Bridge on the way back to Burlington.

10. Eat & Drink Your Way Through Burlington

What Burlington lacks in true ‘must do’ attractions, it more than makes up for with awesome eateries and breweries.

Remember this is a college town as well as a tourist town, so there are plenty of delicious options. And another important aspect to consider is that Burlington ranks as the number 1 place in the country for using fresh locally grown food.

With so many farms in so much farmland, there’s no surprise that farm-to-table dining is par for the course in Vermont.

Let’s start with food and a selection of the top rated places to eat in downtown Burlington, VT:

  • Bistro de Margot – French
  • Penny Cluse Cafe – Breakfast
  • Istanbul Kebab House – Turkish
  • Pizzeria Verità – Pizza
  • American Flatbread – Pizza
  • Trattoria Delia – Italian

Moving onto breweries, the three most talked about places to visit are:

  • Foam Brewers – Right in Waterfront Park next to the bike path (best location)
  • Switchback Brewery – South End (not far from Lake Champlain Chocolate)
  • Zero Gravity Craft Brewery – South End (next to Lake Champlain Chocolate)

Where To Stay In Burlington, VT

Burlington is a very popular tourist destination in Vermont, but there is a surprisingly low amount of hotels in the downtown area.

Staying downtown near Church Street is ideal for first time visitors who want to be at the heart of the lively town, but options are very limited and therefore are typically more expensive.

Those visiting on a low budget will have to look a little further out of downtown Burlington to find affordable rooms nearby. Colchester and South Burlington have a handful of options, or you can book a cheaper room near the airport.

Remember that Vermont receives more snow per year than any other US state. Getting around once in town is easier by foot, so plan to stay centrally if you are visiting in Winter.

The Best Things to Do in Burlington, Vermont this Summer

If you haven’t looked upon Lake Champlain from the Burlington Waterfront, ridden your bike along the Burlington bike path, or meandered along the Church Street Marketplace on a sweltering summer night, then you need to drop everything and plan a summer getaway to Burlington, Vermont!

The Burlington Vermont waterfront.

Located on the shores of Lake Champlain, Burlington is Vermont’s largest city. It is home to the University of Vermont, the famous Church Street Marketplace, and about 42,000 residents. Burlington is a mecca for beer and coffee drinkers, foodies, and shoppers, and has been named the healthiest city in the United States many times over.

This is also the closest I’ll come to having a hometown, so naturally, Burlington holds a special place in my heart. Here are our favorite things to do in Burlington in the summer, which is also the very best time to visit.

Explore the Church Street Marketplace

A crowd of people enjoying the outdoor patios on Church Street in Burlington Vermont.

The Church Street Marketplace is a pedestrian-only, open-air shopping experience, which is also the hub of Burlington.

Meander along Church Street to find independently-owned boutiques, a few bigger chain stores, fabulous coffee shops, eclectic dining with outdoor seating, and a whole lotta people. Church Street hosts musicians, street performers, food trucks, happy dogs, and kids with ice cream cones.

This is the place to go when you want a latte, a diamond necklace, a new outfit, or a burrito. It’s good for an afternoon of people watching or an excuse to spend all your money.

Church Street is a must-visit destination for anyone who wants the Burlington experience, and if you’re into outdoor dining and shopping for unique gifts, a trip to Church Street is one of the best things to do in Burlington.

Embark on a Burlington Brewery Tour

A platter of food and a few beers on the table at Zero Gravity Brewing in Burlington.

As with much of the country right now, the craft beer scene is huge in Vermont, especially in Burlington. Thanks to the Vermont Brewers Association, there’s now an official Burlington Beer Trail where you can spend a few hours or a few days sipping Burlington’s finest brews.

Because Burlington is such a walkable/bikeable city, you can embark on your Burlington brewery tour without ever having to get behind the wheel. Now that’s how you celebrate summer in Burlington!

There are seven Burlington beers on the tour, with Simple Roots being the only one that’s a bit off the beaten path (on North Avenue outside of the city center). If you are a fan of the craft beer movement, this is one of the best things to do in Burlington, Vermont.

Here are the must-visit breweries on the Burlington trail:

  • Simple Roots
  • Foam Brewers
  • Zero Gravity Craft Brewers
  • Queen City Brewery
  • Switchback Brewing Co.
  • Vermont Pub and Brewery
  • Burlington Beer Company

 Bike the Burlington Greenway

local motion burlington greenway 2 1 scaled

If you’re looking for a way to get outside and enjoy the fabulous Vermont weather and spectacular mountain views, look no further than the Burlington Greenway, also known as the Burlington Bike Path. I would definitely argue that the Burlington Greenway is one of the prettiest paths in the country and one of the absolute best things to do in Burlington, Vermont.

The paved trail runs along the water for eight miles, from Oakledge Park in the south to the Winooski River in the north. It connects several awesome parks and recreation areas, including the Burlington Waterfront, North Beach, and Leddy Park.

Wear your bathing suit because you’ll have lots of opportunities to cool off in Lake Champlain, and if eight miles isn’t enough, you can continue north on the Island Line Trail into the Lake Champlain Islands and beyond. The trail is open to walkers and joggers if you don’t have a bike of your own, or you can rent a bike for an afternoon or weekend.

For more information on the Burlington Bike Path and the surrounding parks, check out Enjoy Burlington.

Take a Sunset Cruise on Lake Champlain

A lighthouse on Lake Champlain in Burlington, Vermont.

Whether you’re looking for Champ or not, there’s no better way to enjoy summer, than with a sunset cruise on Lake Champlain. The Spirit of Ethan Allen departs from the Burlington Waterfront for sunset cruises on Friday and Saturday evenings through the summer.

Sip a cocktail, order some snacks, and watch the sun sink behind the Adirondack Mountains. It’s the perfect way to end a day in Burlington. If you can’t make the sunset cruise, check out the lunch or narrated cruises which are offered more frequently during the week.

If you happen to be in Burlington on July 3rd, be sure to book a spot on the Fireworks cruise, which is a highlight of the summer and one of the best times to get out on Lake Champlain.

When people think of hiking in Vermont, their thoughts naturally turn to the Green Mountains, which run north to south through the center of the state, but there are some fabulous easy trails near Burlington too.

Burlington takes its outdoor recreation very seriously with an abundance of green spaces, trails, parks, and gardens throughout the city, and if you’re planning a visit to this beautiful part of Vermont, you’ll be happy to know that there are lots of easy hikes near Burlington.

Stock up on Local Goodies at the Burlington Farmers Market

Locals love shopping for fresh produce, meat, and chees at the Burlington Farmers’ Market each Saturday, but the market is truly an event that is enjoyed by everyone. Visit the market and you will quickly discover why it’s so special. There are special events, live music, fabulous prepared foods, and locally-produced crafts.

There are many farmers’ markets throughout Vermont, but the Burlington Farmers’ Markets is one of the biggest – definitely worth checking out!

The Burlington Farmers’ Market takes place on Saturdays from May 7 to October 29 at 345 Pine Street in Burlington. 9am-2pm.

Watch the Sunset from Oakledge Park

Sunset over Lake Champlain from Oakledge Park in Burlington, Vermont.

Two sunset ideas in one post? Now you know where my heart lies. Truth be told, there are lots of amazing places to catch a Lake Champlain sunset, but I’m partial to Oakledge Park, as it was walking distance from my grandparent’s home when I was a kid.

Oakledge Park, in Burlington’s South End is the perfect spot for families to end the day — there’s a lovely playground, pavilions, tennis courts, and walking trails, plus access to the aforementioned Burlington Bike Path.

Claim a spot on the red rocks jutting up from the lake, and enjoy the views of the setting sun. Perhaps I’m a bit biased, but all my favorite sunsets have been right in this spot. For directions and park info, check out Enjoy Burlington.

Where to Stay in Burlington, Vermont

Hilton Garden Inn lobby in Burlington, Vermont.

Burlington is a thriving and walkable city, and when it’s in the budget, I always try to reserve a hotel room right downtown so I can walk everywhere. There’s nothing like stepping out of your door in the morning for a brisk waterfront walk or a saunter to the nearest coffee shop.

Hilton Garden Inn :  We stayed here for the first time in 2019 and really loved the Main Street location, the funky vibe, and the outdoor fire pit. There is good parking, the beds are comfy, and there’s an indoor pool. Again, reserve early for the best rooms and prices.

Hotel Vermont , while on the pricey side, gets five stars for its location. This boutique hotel is a stone’s throw from Lake Champlain and close to all of the best downtown shopping and dining. Just remember, you will need to reserve a room far in advance during the fall foliage season.

If you are visiting Burlington, Vermont in the fall with a family or want something that won’t hit your wallet quite so hard, you may want to reserve an apartment on VRBO. We have stayed at three downtown apartments in Burlington so far, and have been impressed with all of them.

Here’s a quick overview of our favorite Burlington vacation rentals:

A vacation rental in Burlington Vermont on Lake Champlain.

  • Lakeview Terrace:  This is a two-bedroom apartment overlooking Lake Champlain with a fabulous backyard. What more could you want? The Old North End location is perfect for families, and there are lots of parks and playgrounds nearby.
  • Renovated South End Carriage House:  The Carriage House apartment is a recently renovated space with a private entrance on a quiet residential street. Just a block away from Zero Gravity Brewery, and within walking distance of local beaches and Churchstreet. Sleeps four comfortably.
  • One Bedroom Duplex Downtown:   Walk to everything from this small one-bedroom apartment with room for four people. Uniquely situated with a private covered deck and off-street parking.

Finally, I have to share one quirky gem with you.  The Starlight Inn   in Colchester is a movie-themed motel located right next to the iconic Sunset Drive-In Theater. I’ve been catching flicks at the Sunset Drive-Inn since I could walk, and Starlight Inn guests receive complimentary tickets for one car and all its occupants.

Another thing to love about the Starlight Inn? Every room is unique and all of them feature a different movie theme. This is a super fun lodging experience for movie buffs and kids. Colchester is located about 15 minutes from Burlington.

I will be looking for walks and bike routes. Although we will take the car to Mt Philo for a panoramic view. Such a great list to plan from.

Thank you! It will be beautiful in the Fall

Loved Vermont. We didn’t get to Burlington, just Montpelier, Stowe and Barre. I want to see that tallest filing cabinet in the world and Ethan Allen’s homestead!

The filing cabinet is just sitting in a vacant lot all by itself… so odd

That is quite a list! Burlington Vermont sounds really nice. Waterfront yoga and SUP sounds great! Definitely my kind of place.

Frequently asked questions

  • Wherever you’re going, flying can be a great experience if you arrive prepared. First of all, pack your passport, travel documents and medications. Next, throw in some extra in-flight entertainment to help make the time fly by. A juicy novel and a tablet filled with your favorite series are good options. If you want to get some shut-eye, a comfortable neck pillow and noise-canceling headphones are also worth bringing along.
  • It also pays to check with your airline regarding what you can’t take on board your flight. Knives, razor blades, swords and batons are among the prohibited items. Anything explosive, flammable or sharp is generally not allowed in your carry-on baggage. Don’t forget to pack any sports equipment like ski poles or baseball bats only in your checked luggage.
  • Go for comfort instead of fashion when flying. Layer up and wear natural materials since they allow moisture and air to pass through and keep you cool. Cabin temperatures typically get cooler on long-haul flights, so pack a pullover and always wear sneakers or enclosed shoes.
  • Consider wearing compression tights or socks to help prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT). This condition is a result of blood clotting that can be caused by prolonged periods of sitting, especially on long-haul journeys. Doing leg and foot stretches in your seat or wandering around the cabin are good ways to improve your circulation.

what to do in burlington vermont: aerial view of burlington vermont

You visit Vermont every winter for skiing and snowboarding, but you’re missing out on some serious autumn fun if you wait for snow season to make the trek. Our suggestion? Take a flight to Burlington, a college town that’s known for its hippie vibes, bustling craft beer scene and natural splendor (which is arguably most gorgeous in the fall). Not only is there a ton to do, eat and see, but the adorably small—and shockingly clean—Burlington International Airport is just 15 minutes from downtown, making travel to and from a breeze. If you go the road trip route instead, you’re in for some seriously stunning scenery. Wondering what to do in Burlington, Vermont once you arrive? Read on for our reasons to visit this time of year.

The 15 Best Towns in Vermont That We Might Just Move to

1. There’s Tons of Outdoor Seasonal Fun

Burlington may be Vermont’s largest city, but it’s retained its natural beauty over decades of growth. If you’re heading there in the fall, you’ll want to make leaf peeping your priority. You don’t need to head to a vantage point and glare, though: There are tons of ways to get out of your hotel room and soak up the autumn splendor. Here are a few of our top recs:

  • Ride the Burlington Bike Path: This eight-mile trail is stunning from start to finish. Complete with shoulders for runners and walkers, the paved path runs along the shoreline of Lake Champlain. You’ll pass art installations, a skate park, residential neighborhoods and—wait for it—a beach . Bring your own bike if you’re driving, ask your hotel if they have bikes available for guests or rent a bike at Local Motion on the waterfront.
  • Go for a Hike: TBH, you can’t go wrong with any Green Mountain spots. Rock Point Trails in Burlington proper offers more than two miles of walking and hiking trails on the shore of Lake Champlain. The site is home to many rare plants and unique habitats that wilderness lovers will adore. We also love the Intervale Center , which has recreational trails for walking, biking and even skiing. You can head to Centennial Woods Natural Area , which is less than two miles from downtown and boasts 65 acres of foliage to explore. As for serious hikers, make the drive from Burlington to Camel’s Hump State Park , the third-highest mountain in the state at nearly 4,100 feet.
  • Drive Along the Mountains: Route 100 is among the most breathtaking scenic drives in Vermont, dappled with farms, shops and all the New England charm you crave. If you have time to kill, check out this 100-mile loop from GoXplr , which will take you to iconic landmarks, picturesque covered bridges, pretty ponds, rushing waterfalls and more.
  • Sail Lake Champlain: Want a unique view of the changing leaves? Gaze at them from the water. You can book a charter boat with the Spirit of Ethan Allan , Whistling Man Schooner or Let’s Go Sailing , which are specifically designed to give guests killer views of the Adirondack Mountains. Just be sure to bundle up.

2. There’s Much to Do in the City

Yes, the foliage is to die for, and there’s no shortage of natural beauty to take in. That said, Burlington’s neighborhoods are just as stunning, from the bustling Church Street Marketplace to the artsy South End district. Needless to say, you’ll want to spend as much time as possible outdoors while in Burlington. Here are a few ways to do it:

  • Stroll (and Shop) Downtown: Burlington has record shops, vintage stores (we recommend The Vault Collective , Old Gold and Dirt Chic ), bookstores and quirky novelty shops galore. Church Street Marketplace, an award-winning pedestrian mall harbors more than 100 shops, restos and small businesses, is perhaps the most iconic hub. You can spend hours strolling, shopping and chatting with local business owners, no matter what’s on your list. We love Crow Bookshop , Lake Champlain Chocolates , Outdoor Gear Exchange and Quarterstaff Games .
  • Venture to the South End: Creators of all kinds will appreciate the artistry in this section of Burlington. The Soda Plant —a massive brick building that was once an industrial soda plant that now houses more than 30 local artisans—should be your first stop. Then, try the Supportive Places for Artists and the Creative Economy, or the S.P.A.C.E. Gallery . Photographers, woodworkers and painters alike house and create their work here. Conant Metal & Light and AO Glass are also must-sees for visitors. (The South End also happens to be the home to the world’s tallest filing cabinet .)
  • Visit the Waterfront: Whether you’re hopping a charter boat, strolling the boardwalk, playing volleyball in the park or digging into a maple creemee (more on that later) with a view, a visit to Burlington is incomplete without a walk to Lake Champlain. If you have kids, head to ECHO , a science and nature museum that’s right on the water. It offers an immersive 3D theater and tons of interactive exhibits.
  • Take Part in a Local Event: There are always festivals, concerts and more to attend in Burlington, especially in the fall. Oktoberfest Vermont on Waterfront Park is a must for beer lovers, since you’ll get to sample an array of local brews and German bites. The South End Art Hop supports tons of independent artisans. But most popular of all is no doubt the Burlington Farmer’s Market , which has been bringing local produce, meat and other goods to the Queen City since 1980. Check out the Burlington events calendar before booking your trip to see what’s on the agenda.

3. The Food Scene Is Next-Level…

Vermont was on the farm-to-table wave before most U.S. states; when you’re so close to farmers and purveyors slinging stunning seasonal produce, top-tier dairy and quality meat, it’s easy to eat locally sourced on the reg. It’s not uncommon for most restaurants and eateries to serve up ingredients from nearby farmers and artisans. Here are a few spots that are sure to thrill any foodie:

  • August First : We could wax poetic about this spot’s sandwiches (and award-winning griddled maple biscuits) all day long. The cult-favorite is the Vermonter, a handheld with smoked turkey, cheddar cheese, apple chutney, red onion and cranberry mayo, but we also adored Tony’s Roast Pork Sandwich (slow-cooked pork, Dijonnaise, pickled onions, cheese and arugula) and the Day Maker (egg, cheddar, bacon fat aioli, tomato-habanero jam, arugula and red onion).
  • Juniper Bar & Restaurant : Yes, it’s a hotel restaurant. And yes, it’s damn delicious. For dinner, we recommend starting with the limited-edition, whiskey-washed Willoughby cheese drizzled with barrel-aged maple syrup and the fried artichoke with thyme-brown butter aioli. As for mains, the mushroom chevre gnocchi with pickled ramps is unreal. If you’re there for brunch, go with the Red Flannel hash, starring Montreal-spiced brisket, or the breakfast burrito with chorizo.
  • Honey Road : This hotspot for Mediterranean small plates is beloved by locals and tourists alike. Here, you’ll find dishes like lamb kofta, halloumi with pomegranate hot honey, grilled cauliflower with pecan romesco and a flurry of shareable dips, like hot pepper labneh and house ricotta. (FYI, Honey Road’s sister restaurant, The Grey Jay , is delightful for brunch; we love the shakhuka, pistachio sticky buns and Turkish coffee.)
  • Hen of the Wood : Any well-traveled foodie has heard of this highlight, which is colloquially referred to as the best restaurant in Burlington. The menu changes daily based on what ingredients the kitchen can source from nearby growers, ranchers, artisans and bakers. Whatever the entrée and starter options are the night you go, you *need* to start with the revelatory Parker House Rolls.
  • The Café Hot : Start your day at this unconventional breakfast spot that’s famous for its bonuts (those are biscuit donuts, the most notorious being the espresso glazed) and off-the-wall vegetarian sandwiches. First-timers should treat themselves to the Number 8, Chicken-Fried, which is piled high with pickled zucchini, tartar sauce and a chicken-fried egg. (Yes, you read that right.)
  • Pingala Café : Calling all vegans. Plant-based comfort awaits at this food truck-inspired spot. Score everything from chili to maple-sriracha broccoli to burger bites, as well as shakes and smoothies. We’re eager to try the resto’s assortment of Crunchwraps, including one that Guy Fieri himself has raved about: The Supreme.
  • Hong’s Chinese Dumplings : This Chinese spot started as a food cart in 2000. After years of local success, Hong’s opened a brick-and-mortar location on Pearl Street. The menu is simple yet drool-worthy, including scallion pancakes, steamed bao, cold sesame noodles and four types of hand-made dumplings. Don’t leave without trying the house hot chili oil and sweet cranberry sauce.
  • Burlington Bay Café : You must stop here for a maple creemee (aka soft serve) before heading home. We also love the black raspberry variety—and recommend asking for a swirl of both flavors. Little Gordo Creemee Stand is also a delicious choice.

4. …and So Is the Local Beer

Craft beer nerds on the East coast are well aware of the groundbreaking brews in Vermont. Plenty travel there, growlers in tow, to fill up on the latest and greatest pours of the moment. The cool thing about Vermont’s craft beer scene, despite being relatively “old” and thriving, is that it’s still very, very local. Many popular breweries don’t export their wares, remaining small enough in operation to give new meaning to the term microbrewery. So, while you’re in town, you’ll need to sample as much as possible:

  • Zero Gravity : It doesn’t get more crushable than an easy-drinking Green State Lager from this local mainstay dedicated to sustainability and community. If IPAs are more your vibe, Conehead won’t disappoint. Dark beer lovers will jive with the Black Cat Porter, while sour fans will love Golden Goose and Strawberry Moon.
  • Queen City Brewery : This Burlington staple has more than 16 taps flowing with a rotating selection of brews. Queen City specializes in lagers, including the crisp South End, Bushwick and Vienna varieties. You can also sip some killer German beers in the fall, from the roasty Schwarzbier to the old-school Oktoberfest.
  • Foam Brewers : The tap list is always fresh and rotating, so you’ll surely find something to quench your thirst. They have several IPAs to choose from (see the citrusy Built to Spill and the boozy Pop Crimes), but they also have a soft spot for mouth-puckering wild ales, since they host a wild ale festival called Funk on the Water every fall. Grab a bite at Deep City , the brewery’s sister restaurant, to turn your happy hour break into a bonafide meal.
  • Burlington Beer Company : You may have spied cans from this brewery around New England and New York. Sipping one in the taproom, though, hits different. Located near Oakledge Park in a 120-year-old brick building, BBCO serves seasonal fare and bevs alike. If you love dark beer (’tis the season, after all), look no further: There are currently a dozen to choose from, including a maple porter and several imperial stouts.
  • Switchback Brewing Company : The Switchback Ale is an easy-drinking, unfiltered, naturally carbonated beer that just about anyone can get behind. But there’s also the Zaboo Hazy IPA for hop lovers and the uber-crisp Karsten lager.
  • Citizen Cider : If you prefer cider to beer, add Citizen to your must-visit list. While you can find their products in liquor stores all over, you’ll need to go to Burlington to sit in the cider pub. Unified Press is the traditional semi-dry, but we adored The Dirty Mayor, a ginger-infused cider, for its punchy, spicy flavor when we taste-tested a bunch of popular hard ciders back in 2020.

P.S.: If cocktails are more your thing, we recommend heading to The 126 , Devil Takes a Holiday , The Archives —which is an arcade bar—and Mule Bar in nearby Winooski for a nightcap. As for distilleries , Smugglers’ Notch Distillery is easily accessible on the Church Street Marketplace, and Mad River Distillers’ tasting room is a brief walk away. If you have the time, drive 40 minutes to Montpelier for a tour, cocktail and meal at Barr Hill .

what to do in burlington vermont: hotel vermont

Where to Stay: Hotel Vermont

Burlington’s only independent hotel couldn’t be in a better spot. Nestled between Church Street and Lake Champlain, you’ll be walking (and biking) distance from tons of hotspots around the city. The bedrooms and suites have a unique open design that’s cozy, breezy and elegant all at once. The hotel also sources many of its amenities and décor pieces from Burlington- and Vermont-based artisans and makers, so everything from the lobby art to your room’s toiletries are hyper-local. Hotel Vermont is also home to Juniper Bar & Restaurant , where you can get artisanal cocktails (we love the Paisley Park and the Bee’s Knees) and killer brunch and dinner, made with ingredients from small Vermont producers.

If you’d prefer to stay at an Airbnb, here are a few options:

  • Nautical Beauty, 1 Block from Water ($133/night)
  • Mid-Century Lake Side Apartment with Free Parking ($231/night)
  • Architecturally Designed Bungalow ($265/night)

NH issues travel advisory for visitors seeing total solar eclipse

  • Updated: Mar. 27, 2024, 10:28 a.m. |
  • Published: Mar. 27, 2024, 10:27 a.m.

New Hampshire officials have a message to drivers going through the Granite State during the April 8 total solar eclipse: stay on the road.

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation, local officials, New Hampshire State Police and New Hampshire Homeland Security and Emergency Management urged all visitors to Coos County to use state highways to reach eclipse-viewing venues and for their return trips home, according to a statement on March 25.

On April 8, a total solar eclipse will be visible from North America as it makes its path from Texas all the way northeast to Maine. This path of totality indicates when and where the 31.6 million people living along that path are expected to see the eclipse happening, weather pending, according to NBC News.

NASA released a map detailing the trajectory of the 2024 total solar eclipse, with a clear view of the eclipse along the path starting in Mexico and moving across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine before exiting over the North Atlantic.

All of Coos County will be within the eclipse’s path of totality, where the sun will be completely blotted out by Earth’s moon, according to Seacoastonline . Local officials anticipate crowds as big as 50,000 during a period when the region usually sees a dip in tourism between snowmobile season and ATV season.

“Some secondary highways and local roads were not designed to handle large volumes of traffic, and springtime in the north country can bring frost heaves and very soft shoulders,” NHDOT said in its statement. “Traffic generated by the solar eclipse will impact roads throughout New Hampshire. Please obey all officers assisting with traffic control as well as all signs and traffic control devices. Be prepared for slow travel heading south after the eclipse on Monday evening.”

On the state’s tourism website , officials said there are limited roads leading in and out of the northern part of the state, so visitors should avoid any unnecessary travel on April 8.

“Do not plan to pull over on the side of the roadways to view the eclipse,” officials said, echoing NHDOT. “Doing so can put you at risk of getting stuck in mud or snow, and tow trucks will face major delays in getting to you.”

Vermont and Maine officials have shared similar warnings to visitors who intend to see the eclipse. Vermont State Parks urged drivers that if parking lots at viewing venues are full to not “park on the grass or in other areas of the park as resource damage is likely due to soft ground conditions.”

Along with planning ahead, Maine’s tourism website told visitors to be wary of unpredictable weather.

The northern end of New Hampshire will be the second New England state to see the eclipse, at 3:27 p.m., according to an interactive map from NASA . In the preceding minute, the eclipse should be seen next door in Burlington, Vermont, and Maine will be last to see the eclipse’s totality at 3:32 p.m.

Parts of North America should start to see the eclipse at around 11:07 a.m. PST (2:07 p.m. EST) off of Mexico’s coast near Mazatlan, according to NASA. Then at around 12:19 p.m. CST, the total solar eclipse will blot out the sun above Torreón in the state of Coahuila. It’s at this point that the duration of totality should last its longest, at 4 minutes and 28 seconds, according to the space agency.

By 3:40 p.m., Newfoundland will be the last stretch of North America to have a direct view of the eclipse on the path of totality before the path spills out towards the Atlantic Ocean. NASA projects that the eclipse will no longer be visible in North America at 3:55 p.m.

Official NH travel information will be posted to the NHDOT Facebook and Twitter social media pages, and motorists are encouraged to visit newengland511.org for real-time traffic information for Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

Visiting an eclipse city? Here’s what to do after the sun reemerges.

Locals share their favorite places to eat and explore in these cities of totality.

A brief blanket of darkness will cover the skies and street lamps will burn midday, as a total solar eclipse stretches across North America on April 8. The phenomenon occurs when the moon moves between the sun and the Earth, causing, for a matter of minutes, a full block of the sun.

Since the next full solar eclipse isn’t predicted to be visible from the contiguous United States again for 20 years, this year’s experience tops many travelers’ list. In fact, up to 3.7 million people are predicted to travel from outside to inside the path of totality come April. Some were booking more than a year in advance .

NASA has outlined 13 cities that fall within the path of totality and make for some of the event’s best vantage points, including Dallas, Little Rock, Buffalo, and Burlington, Vt. We tapped locals in some of these cities for some of their best recommendations on what to eat, see and do in their hometowns once the sun reemerges.

Totality: 1:40 to 1:44 p.m. Central time

With one of the longest durations along the path of totality in the United States, Dallas will be packed with visitors. Organizations throughout the city will host viewing parties and events, including the Perot Museum of Nature and Science , which has invited over 20 astronomers for an event full of science activities, food and music, plus chances to explore the museum’s interactive stargazing experiences.

The Dallas Arboretum has partnered with retired NASA astronaut Alvin Drew for its party, and the Frontiers of Flight Museum , with an unobstructed location near Love Field, is hosting a family-friendly viewing event. Totality Dallas is a three-day festival hosted at Samuell Farm in Mesquite, Tex., just east of Dallas.

Tanner Agar , owner of Rye and Apothecary restaurants, moved to Dallas in 2011 to attend Texas Christian University and after spending time abroad, he returned to the city to get into the restaurant business. “I thought it was a great place to make a name for myself as a chef and restaurateur,” he said in an email. Just before the eclipse, Agar plans to launch an Alice in Wonderland menu at Apothecary, a cocktail bar known for its creative concoctions. “If you’ve traveled to see the eclipse, you’re clearly looking to be surprised and delighted,” he said.

Agar recommends visiting the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, which is marking 60 years since the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. For a taste of classic Texas, he recommends swinging by The Stockyards in Fort Worth, a historic area that has shopping, dining and still hosts cattle drives. “You can get custom-made boots and go two-stepping at the largest honkey tonk in the world,” he said, “after you attend the rodeo, of course.”

Little Rock

Totality: 1:51 to 1:54 p.m. Central time

With its dark skies and top-notch state parks, Arkansas is a major draw for the eclipse crowd. The University of Arkansas at Little Rock will host a special event with food trucks, access to telescopes and activities for kids, like creating pinhole viewing boxes. Snap a photo of the eclipse with a free phone adapter. For hiking trails and high-altitude vantage points, Pinnacle Mountain State Park , just outside of the city limits, will be a popular draw.

While in Little Rock, visit the trendy South on Main (SoMa) District and stop by the Esse Purse Museum , a special collection that examines the role of a woman’s purse as more than an accessory. Grab a cone of “Arkansas Mud” at Loblolly Creamery , and sample baleadas and other Honduran and Latin American street food at El Sur . SoMa in the Dark is a multiday eclipse event featuring pop-ups, markets, a nighttime parade and an evening glow run.

Evansville, Ind.

Totality: 2:02 to 2:05 p.m. Central time

Evansville, Ind., is positioned on a bend of the Ohio River, just north of the Kentucky line. Given its riverfront location and full-dome planetarium show, the Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science will be a popular eclipse-viewing vantage point. Learn about the sun, moon and stars at the immersive eclipse 2024 show.

Continue your connection with nature at Wesselman Woods , the largest tract of urban old-growth forest in the country. Wesselman will host a free multicultural festival on April 8, with food trucks and live music. Wesselman Woods Marketing Director Kristina Arwood is a native Evansvillian and recommends stopping for a slice of coconut cream pie at Pie Pan , an all-day breakfast diner and bakery.

For a slice of history, head north of town to The Log Inn , a historic stagecoach stop built in 1825, and the oldest restaurant in Indiana. It’s said that Abraham Lincoln stopped here in 1844 while campaigning for Henry Clay. Order family style and get a sampling of ham, fried chicken or roast beef. Sides, such as German potato salad and fried potatoes, point to the region’s rich German heritage. For another dose of history, visit Angel Mounds , a state historic site honoring the Mississippians who inhabited the area hundreds of years ago.

Totality: 3:13 to 3:17 p.m. Eastern time

Destiny Thomas is a Cleveland native and astronomer at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History , where they recently premiered a planetarium show, Meeting Totality. The museum will also host a watch party on April 8. For another prime viewing spot, Thomas recommends Observatory Park, just under an hour’s drive east of the city. “The area is free of light pollution, providing incredible and breathtaking views of the cosmos, and it’s within the path of totality,” she said in an email.

Before or after the big event, Thomas says not to miss the city’s most famous attraction, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . Lisa Vinciquerra, director of production and live events at the hall, has lived in Cleveland for 30 years and recommends the Cleveland Museum of Art . For great cocktails and healthy Latin fare, she likes downtown’s LULO Kitchen .

Thomas also recommends the Cleveland Botanical Garden. “I find it incredibly relaxing and serene,” she said. The Madagascar Glasshouse , home to the largest collection of baobab trees in the United States, is there.

Douglas Katz, chef at Amba in Ohio City and Zhug in Cleveland Heights, recommends the city’s many parks, which will host an eclipse-related speaker series , workshops and viewing parties. His favorite is Edgewater on the lakefront.

He also recommends stopping by the University Circle area: “It is filled with cultural institutions, plus world-class art, architecture and food, and it’s home to Severance Music Center, home of the renowned Cleveland Orchestra,” he said in an email. The orchestra will partner with the Great Lakes Science Center and NASA’s Glenn Research Center for Total Eclipse Fest , with a free concert on April 7.

If time allows, Katz also suggests stopping by the Cleveland Cultural Gardens , tucked inside the 254-acre Rockefeller Park. “They represent many of the immigrants and settlers throughout Cleveland’s history,” he said. Of interest to eclipse-seekers, the Polish Garden features astronomer Nicholaus Copernicus.

Totality: 3:18 to 3:22 p.m. Eastern time

Buffalo is toward the end of the eclipse arc in the United States. Marc Moscato, owner of Buffalo Bike Tours, offers a chicken wing tour , where you can meet John Young’s daughter — Lina Brown Young — and purchase specialty “mumbo sauce.” If weather permits, head over to Tifft Nature Preserve , a 264-acre park with five miles of trails and boardwalks, just five minutes from downtown.

Buffalo native Michelle Kearns, a former reporter who now works for the visitor’s bureau, recommends a visit to the emerging museum district, which includes the Buffalo AKG Art Museum , one of the oldest museums in the country. Its art collection ranges from works by Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Jackson Pollack and Andy Warhol.

Grab a quick bite at Cornelia inside the museum (Kearns recommends a breakfast sandwich), or sit at the Sculpture Bar and sip a glass of wine or cocktail while viewing the sculpture garden. The Burchfield Penney Art Center is another draw with immersive art installations and glass.

And since “Where can I find the wings?” is a question almost every local gets, Kearns recommends Gabriel’s Gate , “a beloved stop” in the center of the city’s Allentown District. She also recommends Cole’s restaurant , within walking distance of the art museums. Stop by for a burger or signature wings. During brunch, order a Buffalo Bloody, made with Frank’s RedHot sauce and blue cheese.

Burlington, Vt.

Totality timeline: 3:26 to 3:29 p.m. Eastern time

Burlington will play host to dozens of eclipse events . Longtime Vermont resident Sas Stewart is the founder of Adventure Dinner, a company that curates and hosts unique food and drink experiences across the state. “I like to call them secret dinners in unexpected places,” she said. For the eclipse, she plans to host pop-up experiences after hours at one of Burlington’s most popular restaurants, The Grey Jay, run by chef Cara Chigazola Tobin . “It will be four courses inspired by our neighbors to the north, on the heels of the sugaring season in Vermont and Quebec,” Stewart said.

While in town, Stewart recommends Tobin’s Honey Road , which features eastern Mediterranean cuisine. “They have sticky wings that are stupid good,” Stewart said. “And the kale salad is amazing.” For a quick and cozy stop, she recommends Manhattan Pizza & Pub. She also describes having recently had a “perfect Sunday afternoon” at Onion City Chicken and Oyster, where she enjoyed oysters, hot crab dip and a martini.

For an artistic experience, Stewart suggests visiting AO Glass to take a glass-blowing class or watch the intricate process during open studio hours. She also recommends the Burlington waterfront. “Part of what makes it really cool is that it’s contiguous,” she said. “Nothing can be built there, so the best views are at public parks.”

Luis Calderin, 49, is originally from Miami, but now calls Burlington home. With chef Oscar Arencibia, he opened Santiago’s Cuban Cuisine , inspired by South Beach and 1950s Havana. “I’d say we have one of the best Cuban sandwiches, Cubanos, north of Miami,” he said. “It’s one of our signature offerings, and our mojito menu is a pillar of the business.”

Calderin describes it as a “tropical-chic atmosphere.” “It sits on the lake, overlooking the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York, so it’s super picturesque,” he said.

Calderin is also a DJ and recommends Pure Pop Records for music lovers. “It’s the hub of the music scene here, just a classic record store,” he said. “It’s laid back, and the people who work there are super knowledgeable on all types of music, from international to our local bands.” Phish was founded in Burlington.

He also recommends a factory tour of Burton Snowboards , which was founded in Vermont in 1977. For a quality cup of joe, Calderin heads to Muddy Waters Cafe . “I get a double espresso with any of their blends, and they have my favorite coconut macaroons,” he said.

For a lunch place that’s “quintessentially Burlington,” he wouldn’t miss Zabby & Elf’s Stone Soup . “Burlington is a mix of college students, young families, professionals, but it’s also a bit of hippie, progressive politics, and it’s becoming more global, so it’s changing quite a bit” he said. “Burlington is a small, progressive little city.”

Up to 200K people estimated to travel to Vermont for total solar eclipse; how to prepare

T he Vermont Agency of Transportation estimates between 60,000 and 200,000 people will travel to Vermont to witness the total solar eclipse, and is planning accordingly.

The influx of tourists is raising some concerns about how the state will manage infrastructure, cell service and expected high traffic. That's why the agency said it's encouraging everyone to plan ahead.

Jayna Morse, director of finance and administration at VTrans, said the agency is expecting the most traffic on April 8 and is pushing for travelers to arrive a few days before and leave a few days after to avoid traffic jams.

“We’ve really been pushing the come early, stay late to help alleviate some of the pain points of traffic on those for those who might be coming up just the day of the eclipse," Morse said. "So, there might be some additional delays and travelers experiencing additional road users on the Tuesday and Wednesday following.”

Travelers are also encouraged to fill up on gas and charge electric vehicles before hitting the road.

Morse said the Vermont League of Towns and Cities is working with municipalities to ensure navigation apps like Waze and Google Maps are consistently updated with traffic and road conditions. Updates can also be found on New England 511 .

The state also recommends that anyone in Vermont stock up on groceries, gas and medications, if possible, reschedule any appointments to avoid traveling locally on April 8 and make sure your landline phone is connected as cell service may be limited.

Is Vermont basketball in for an upset? Here are our 2024 March Madness bracket predictions

travel to burlington vermont

Can Vermont basketball turn back the clock and become Cinderella once again?

Making their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance, the America East champion Catamounts (28-6) are a 13-seed and are sizing up a first-round upset against No. 4-seeded Duke (24-8). The teams will play in Brooklyn, New York, out of the South Region.

"These guys want to go to the tournament and we want to win. We are trying to get this program to Sweet 16s," Vermont coach John Becker said after Saturday's America East championship victory .

Here are three reasons why Vermont can, and and a prediction on if it will stay alive through opening weekend.

Vermont basketball has the resolve to stage March Madness upset

The Catamounts have staged five comeback victories when trailing by at least 10 points this season. It started in third game of the 2023-24 campaign when they erased a 15-point first-half deficit in their opening contest of the 2023 Myrtle Beach Invitational.

FOLLOW THE MADNESS: NCAA tournament brackets, scores, schedules, teams and more.

Vermont also pulled off a stunning, last-second victory over Yale on TJ Long's four-point play in one of the most unthinkable finishes in recent memory .

MORE: Watch Vermont basketball vs. Duke in March Madness on Fubo (free trial)

The Catamounts also stormed back against Northeastern (down 13 points), Brown (17) and Maryland-Baltimore County (20). Then in its quarterfinal America East tournament game, Vermont fell behind by 10 points to Albany before — you guessed it — Long drilled the go-ahead triple with 30 seconds left in regulation to save the Cats' season .

"We just knew the kind of guys we had in the locker room, it didn’t matter how far down we were," Vermont junior forward Ileri Ayo-Faleye said after Saturday's America East final . "We had the type of dudes who were going to fight back and never give up."

Defense needs to travel for Vermont basketball at NCAA Tournament

Vermont coach John Becker has built his program into a mid-major power because of his commitment and philosophical approach to defense and rebounding. You have to learn Becker's defensive system and play with effort and execution to earn minutes in games.

Vermont basketball vs Duke: Who has edge in 2024 NCAA Tournament Round of 64?

The Catamounts have two of the best on-ball defenders in America East, with the lengthy and bouncy Ayo-Faleye in the frontcourt and a terrorizing, steals machine Shamir Bogues in the backcourt. The Catamounts are ranked ninth nationally in scoring defense (63 points a game).

According to kempom.com's advanced stats , Vermont is 61st in adjusted defensive efficiency among all D-I teams, 25th in effective field-goal percentage defense and eighth in offensive rebounding rate.

Maybe it's just time for Vermont basketball?

UVM has two NCAA tournament wins on its resume — 2012's first-four victory over Lamar, in Becker's first season, and the famous triumph as a 13-seed in 2005 when senior stars Taylor Coppenrath and T.J. Sorrentine topped Syracuse in overtime in coach Tom Brennan's swan song.

In recent trips to March Madness, Becker's Catamounts put up valiant bids vs. Purdue (2017) , Florida State (2019) and Arkansas (2022) . Purdue and Florida State proved overwhelming down the stretch in those matchups and Arkansas did just enough to squeeze past the Catamounts in the closing minutes.

Maybe it's time to slip on Cinderella's slipper again for Vermont?

Although Vermont's not owned anything, this year's squad has proven it can win tight games, make clutch 3-pointers and deliver on the defensive end — all the markings for a potential upset.

March Madness upset prediction for Vermont

Vermont finds a way to beat Duke 65-64 and then takes down its next opponent (Wisconsin or James Madison) to surge into the Sweet 16 as a 13-seed.

7 State Parks In Vermont For Viewing The Solar Eclipse

Looking for the perfect place to view the 2024 Solar Eclipse? Head to these state parks in northern Vermont for a spectacular view!

  • Experience a total solar eclipse on April 8th, 2024 in northern Vermont's state parks within the path of totality!
  • Witness the breathtaking ring of fire as the moon completely covers the sun over Lake Champlain at Niquette Bay State Park.
  • Plan ahead to view the eclipse at Grand Isle State Park - the largest island on Lake Champlain with panoramic mountain views.

Vermont is perhaps one of the most beautiful places in New England to live or visit (and the northern part of the state is a particularly excellent place to explore any time of year). You can explore the lush, green mountains in the summer, go paddleboarding under the sun on the many lakes, explore Vermont's Green Mountains in winter, or watch the leaves change to vibrant colors while enjoying scenic drives in Vermont in the fall . However, northern Vermont has quickly become a destination on many people's lists this spring because, on April 8th, 2024, there will be a solar eclipse over the state!

Solar eclipses are not super rare events. Several varieties of solar eclipses can occur multiple times in a year, but a total solar eclipse is when the moon completely covers the sun in the middle of the day, darkening the skies and allowing people to look right at the sun (with protection!). Through proper safety glasses, you can see what looks like a ring of fire - the sun perfectly eclipsed by the moon. This natural spectacle truly is incredible. On April 8th, 2024, around 3:30 pm, the skies will darken and thousands of viewers will be dazzled!

Northern Vermont is one of the places in the US that will see full totality during April's solar eclipse . In fact, it's the final place of totality for the eclipse! "The Path of Totality" refers to the area where the moon will fully eclipse the sun. While a partial eclipse will be visible from many other areas of the United States, the most fascinating and dark area to see the eclipse will be in the path of totality. The best time to view the solar eclipse in northern Vermont will be between 2 pm and 4 pm. The eclipse is predicted to peak between 3:20 pm and 3:30 pm , darkening the skies for approximately 3 minutes.

If you're looking for a great place to watch the eclipse in its entirety, you'll want to check out any of these state parks in Vermont to see the solar eclipse on full show. All of these state parks will be open for the event, and all of them are within the path of totality. Some of the best state parks in Vermont have been chosen below to showcase not only the beauty of the surrounding mountains but also the solar eclipse. Bundle up, bring some chairs and snacks, and prepare to enjoy an unforgettable experience on April 8th, 2024 in these Vermont state parks for viewing the eclipse!

Since the 2024 Eclipse is outside of Vermont's regular park season, only a limited number of state parks will be open for the event . For a list of all the open parks, check out Trail Finder or Vermont's state park website. Also, April is mud season in the state of Vermont. Due to excess rain and mud in sensitive areas of the forest, mud season rules are in effect . This means that, in order to protect the sensitive ecosystems, not all trails are open. Please respect the signage posted at trailheads and plan ahead by checking Trail Finder to see which trails are open!
