18 and over

Rebecca Menzies was dealing with frozen pipes in her Howe Hills Stables in Durham on Thursday morning, and as she waits for the recent freeze to abate it was an all-hands-on-deck approach to turn out her team for their normal routine.

Rebecca had her best season to date when notching 40 winners and collecting £429,753 in prize money in 2022-23, and the ambitious trainer, whose yard is only a stone’s throw from Sedgefield, will be looking to topple that total again this time around.

The yard has already sent out 18 winners this season and has some dependable sorts in Russian Virtue , Imperial Data , The Churchill Lad and Harper Valley who can swell that tally further, along with a few raw recruits looking to make an impact and become familiar names on the Northern circuit in the coming seasons.

Rebecca kindly talked to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about the team at her Durham base.

Form profile

No wins from four starts in bumpers and hurdles. Best effort when runner-up, beaten three and a half lengths, to Forged Well in a novice hurdle at Carlisle (2m3½f) in December.

Trainer says

A staying chaser type who won’t fulfil his potential until he goes over fences. He is not slow in his homework but perhaps looks more of a stayer on the track.

Boot 'n' Shoe (IRE)

  • Breeding: Ask (UK) - Phecda (FR) (Ocean Of Wisdom (USA))
  • Last Race: Kelso, 16 Feb 2024 14:25
  • Result: 6/9, held up in last pair, never involved

attheraces.com stable tours

Promise in two bumpers at Newcastle in January and February 2022. Finished eighth, beaten 20 lengths, to Dream Boy in a maiden hurdle at Kelso (2m) at the end of December.

He was far from disgraced in his two Newcastle bumpers in early 2022. He actually did so well physically for his time off that he needed his run back more than expected. He has come forward for that and will progress with his racing.

Court Case (IRE)

  • Breeding: Court Cave (IRE) - Dark Sari (IRE) (Indian Danehill (IRE))
  • Next Race: Newcastle, 26 Mar 2024 15:05
  • Form: 3-3PP4

attheraces.com stable tours

Placed in both his bumpers and finished third, beaten 18½ lengths, to Wendigo at Hexham in November.

Twice raced and twice placed in bumpers, both around Hexham. Has been schooled and schools well, and so will go down the hurdle route shortly. There’ll be plenty of good days for John Wade with this lad, hopefully.

Curley Finger (IRE)

  • 7-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Getaway (GER) - Tooreen (IRE) (Gold Well (UK))
  • Last Race: Doncaster, 02 Mar 2024 14:05
  • Result: Won/8, made all, driven approaching 2 out, awkward jump last, kept on strongly run-in, just held on

attheraces.com stable tours

Winner of three of his 15 starts and currently rated 115 over hurdles. Returned to winning form on latest outing in a handicap hurdle at Newcastle (2m7½f) this month when beating Teescomponentstrig by a length and a quarter off a mark of 111.

This lad is owned by some great National Hunt supporters, and he’s already given them plenty of fun when winning the Go North Series Staying Hurdle last year. He won at the start of the month and will hopefully add to that. He was bought to be a chaser.

Disco Annie (IRE)

  • 6-y-o; bay mare
  • Breeding: Court Cave (IRE) - Betty Beck (IRE) (Westerner (UK))
  • Trained by: Rebecca Menzies
  • Last Race: Kelso, 16 Feb 2024 17:02
  • Result: 9/12, led, pushed along and headed over 2f out, lost 2nd soon after, ridden and weakened quickly inside final 2f

attheraces.com stable tours

Runner-up, beaten four lengths, to Lake Road in a point-to-point in Ireland in November 2022. Finished last of seven in a bumper at Aintree on Boxing Day.

She was given some time after she was second in her Irish point-to-point. That day, she had an English maiden hurdle winner behind in third and an Irish maiden hurdle winner back in fourth. She didn’t show in Aintree what she’s shown at home, and she will leave that effort behind in time (poor scope).

Floueur (FR)

  • 9-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Legolas (JPN) - Saraska D'airy (FR) (Ungaro (GER))
  • Last Race: Uttoxeter, 16 Mar 2024 14:25
  • Result: 5/17, raced wide in touch, pushed along and headway 3 out, kept on same pace

attheraces.com stable tours

Winner of five of his 23 starts and currently rated 140 over fences. Finished fifth, beaten 30 lengths, to Special Rate on stable debut in a handicap chase at Kelso (2m7½f) last Sunday.

A really nice, recent addition to the yard. His form is there for all to see. He’s a fine stamp of a quality chaser and has found his work easy, so he may have needed the run more than I thought going to Kelso. He’ll improve for it, and we’ll target the good staying chases in the spring, hopefully.

Fonzerelli (IRE)

  • 8-y-o; bay mare
  • Breeding: Schiaparelli (GER) - Cadoutene (FR) (Cadoudal (FR))
  • Last Race: Hexham, 11 Apr 2022 14:05
  • Result: 2/5, prominent, led approaching last, ridden flat, kept on, hung left final 100yds, headed final strides

attheraces.com stable tours

Winner of two of her eight starts and rated 130 over hurdles. Runner-up, beaten a nose, to Marsh Wren when last seen in action in a mares’ novices' hurdle at Hexham in April 2022.

She is back and not far off a run. She signed off in 2022 by winning a Listed hurdle at Doncaster. She retains all of her enthusiasm and ability. She may start back over hurdles and then go chasing, but it’ll be the mares' only programme that we’ll be sticking to.

Fujita Scale

  • 5 b g Snow Sky - Moody Queen
He goes nicely here at home. He’s by the same sire as Twoshotsoftequila, who has been very good to us here. This lad is related to Tidal Bay and Beshabar, so he’s bred to be able to gallop. He’ll more than likely start off in a bumper.

Had To Be Hugo (IRE)

  • Breeding: Ocovango (UK) - Had To Be Done (IRE) (Presenting (UK))
  • Last Race: Catterick, 12 Feb 2024 14:30
  • Result: 4/7, in rear, pushed along at times, ridden after 7th, struggling when pecked 8th, mistake 3 out, soon well behind, tailed off

attheraces.com stable tours

No wins from eight starts and currently rated 105 over fences and 109 over hurdles. Placed in two of his three starts this term and came closest to victory when third, beaten five and three quarter lengths, to Niceandeasy in a handicap hurdle at Kelso (3m2f) in November off his current mark.

Has been very consistent for his owners the Value Racing Club. He found life tough in the Lincoln National on Boxing Day, and we will now head back to calmer waters with less forceful tactics. He’ll win races.

Harper Valley (IRE)

  • Breeding: Leading Light (IRE) - Queen Of Cool (IRE) (King's Theatre (IRE))
  • Last Race: Kelso, 10 Mar 2024 16:30
  • Result: 3/10, held up in rear, not fluent 8th, headway before 3 out, led and not fluent 2 out, headed before last, lost 2nd flat, no extra towards finish

attheraces.com stable tours

Winner of two of his seven starts and currently rated 109 over hurdles. Finished third, beaten six and a half lengths, to Mothill in a handicap hurdle at Sedgefield (2m4f) on Boxing Day off a mark of 110.

He’s a yard favourite as he always runs his race. He should remain competitive off his mark and is lightly raced. He will also jump a fence in time.

High Moon (GB)

  • Breeding: Midnight Legend (UK) - Dizzy Frizzy (UK) (Loup Sauvage (USA))
  • Last Race: Ayr, 08 Mar 2024 15:30
  • Result: 2/10, chased leaders on inside, mistake 11th, led before 3 out, ridden and headed before the last, stayed on same pace run-in, no chance with winner

attheraces.com stable tours

Winner of three of his 21 starts and currently rated 113 over fences. Finished third, beaten 25 lengths, to Aubis Walk in a handicap chase at Ayr (2m4½f) in December.

You can set your watch by him, and come spring time he’ll add to his three wins already in the bank. He’s got a great following amongst the local tracks here.

Imperial Data (IRE)

  • Breeding: Imperial Monarch (IRE) - Rindoon's Sister (IRE) (Witness Box (USA))
  • Last Race: Sedgefield, 22 Oct 2023 17:00
  • Result: Won/10, held up in rear of mid-division, good headway to lead 3 out, shaken up 2 out where jumped left across rival, kept on well after last, always doing enough

attheraces.com stable tours

Winner of three of his six starts and currently rated 113 over hurdles. An improving sort who completed a hat-trick at Sedgefield (2m4f) in October when scoring by a length and a quarter from Copper Beach off a mark of 109.

A lovely, future staying chaser for John Wade. He’s related to Dorans Pride and is one for chasing when we get good ground - he has had a short winter break.

Jeu Sacre (FR)

  • 5-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Cokoriko (FR) - Aventure Sacree (FR) (Lavirco (GER))
  • Last Race: Carlisle, 19 Feb 2024 14:30
  • Result: 5/5, led, not fluent 7th where headed, lost position and ridden before 2 out where detached in last, soon tailed off

attheraces.com stable tours

No wins from eight starts and currently rated 108 over fences and 103 over hurdles. Finished eighth, beaten 34 lengths, to Elogio in a novices’ handicap hurdle at Wetherby (2m3½f) on Boxing Day on stable debut.

A recent purchase from France. He’s a maiden under Rules and is just acclimatising. He’ll improve as he matures, carries himself very well, and is a very accurate jumper of a fence.

Kingston Narcissus (FR)

  • 5-y-o; grey gelding
  • Breeding: Authorized (IRE) - Kingston Acacia (UK) (King Of Roses (AUS))
  • Trained by: E Libaud
  • Last Race: Angers, 27 Oct 2023 14:34
  • Result: 8/13,

Promise in three runs on the Flat in France for Eric Libaud. Finished fourth, beaten a length, to La Javanaise in a handicap at Deauville (1m1½f) in August when last seen.

Another French import. Only beaten a length in Deauville over 9f. He will be one for hurdles on good ground, and may well mix codes during the summer.

Lady Mendoza (IRE)

  • 7-y-o; bay mare
  • Breeding: Court Cave (IRE) - Glen's Gift (IRE) (Presenting (UK))
  • Last Race: Musselburgh, 30 Nov 2023 13:35
  • Result: 2/6, close up, disputed lead 6th, led approaching 3 out, soon ridden and joined for lead, headed after 2 out, ran on well, not reach leader

attheraces.com stable tours

Placed in three of her six starts and currently rated 98. Finished runner-up, beaten a length and three quarters, to Autumn Return in a mares’ handicap hurdle at Musselburgh (2m4f) in November off a mark of 97 when last seen.

A point-to-point winner who was most recently runner up to Autumn Return in Musselburgh, and the winner of that is now rated 119, so hopefully she’s a winner in-waiting for the Coral Racing Club, and she will also jump a fence.
  • 5 ch g Doctor Dino - Venerie
A lovely moving son of Doctor Dino who is related to prolific Irish chaser Vaucelet. He’s not too far off starting, but he’s a future chaser and has a touch of class.

Lihyan (IRE)

  • Breeding: Vendangeur (IRE) - Elle Est Milan (IRE) (Milan (UK))
  • Last Race: Musselburgh, 04 Feb 2024 16:05
  • Result: 2/12, held up in rear, headway 8th, mistake 2 out, went 2nd last, stayed on, held by winner

attheraces.com stable tours

Winner of two of his 11 starts and currently rated 110 over hurdles. Returned to winning form in a handicap hurdle at Musselburgh (2m4f) in December when beating Dot Cotton by five and a half lengths off a mark of 97, and finished runner-up, beaten three quarters of a length, to Duyfken in a similar event over course and distance earlier this month off a mark of 105.

He got a great ride from William Maggs to win in November and was possibly unlucky the last day on softer ground. I’d be disappointed if he doesn’t double his tally over hurdles.

Mister Moodles (GB)

  • Breeding: Phoenix Reach (IRE) - Sherry (UK) (Tobougg (IRE))
  • Last Race: Carlisle, 07 Mar 2024 16:20
  • Result: 7/12, prominent, pushed along and weakened approaching 2 out

attheraces.com stable tours

Winner of one of his four starts. Off the mark in a novices’ hurdle at Doncaster (2m½f) in December when beating Sea Grey by two lengths.

Doncaster was a great day for his owners Mike and Eileen Newbould, and a day to remember as he is also a home bred. He’s a horse we will mind, and one who will definitely be happier on quicker ground.

Mr Le Philosophe (GB)

  • 4-y-o; chestnut gelding
  • Breeding: Le Havre (IRE) - Uryale (FR) (Kendor (FR))
  • Last Race: Kelso, 02 Mar 2024 16:35
  • Result: 3/5, close up, reminders 5th, ridden 3 out, kept on to go a poor 3rd towards finish

attheraces.com stable tours

No wins in four starts on the Flat for Mikhael Dezangles in France. Finished fourth, beaten three quarters of a length, to Zillow in a conditions event at Saint-Cloud (1m4f) in October when last seen.

A horse with a lot of quality and presence that I bought in France in the autumn. He’s just settling in and has begun schooling, and all signs are positive with him. He should be a dual purpose horse moving forward.

Rafferty's Return (GB)

  • Breeding: Schiaparelli (GER) - Duchess Theatre (IRE) (King's Theatre (IRE))
  • Next Race: Newcastle, 26 Mar 2024 16:05
  • Form: 534417

attheraces.com stable tours

Winner of three of his 16 starts and currently rated 121. Finished fourth, beaten 26 lengths, to Ailie Rose in a handicap hurdle at Ayr (3m½f) earlier this month off a mark of 123.

Possibly didn't see out the three-mile trip the last day as he likes to be on the pace, and maybe he’s better over slightly shorter ridden more prominently.

Raffles Wonder (FR)

  • 7-y-o; chestnut gelding
  • Breeding: Balko (FR) - Ruthenoise (FR) (Robin Des Champs (FR))
  • Last Race: Wetherby, 19 Mar 2024 14:45
  • Result: 4/7, held up well in rear, headway out wide before 3 out where awkward, outpaced before next, went modest 4th run-in

attheraces.com stable tours

Winner of one of his six starts and currently rated 93 over hurdles. Well beaten in all three starts this season, finishing last of 10 to Handstands in a novice hurdle at Newcastle (2m4½f) earlier this month.

Won a bumper at Sedgefield on debut and it’s just taken a while for him to find his level over hurdles. He’s improved mentally for each run this season, and I’d be disappointed if he doesn’t leave behind his recent form at some stage.

Russian Virtue (GB)

  • Breeding: Toronado (IRE) - Russian Rhapsody (UK) (Cosmonaut (UK))
  • Next Race: Newcastle, 23 Mar 2024 18:00
  • Form: 74/141-0

attheraces.com stable tours

Winner of eight of his 39 starts and currently rated 114 over hurdles and 65 on the Flat. A three-time winner over hurdles this season, gaining his latest success in a handicap hurdle at Carlisle (2m1f|) in December when beating Jipekaa Machin by three quarters of a length off his current mark. Finished last of 11, beaten 10 lengths, to Charlie’s Choice in a handicap at Wolverhampton (1m1½f) last week.

An eight-time winner for us here between the Flat and over hurdles. He thrives on racing and his work at home, and he hasn’t finished winning yet. The Go North Series Final will be his target this year.

Sam's Choice (IRE)

  • 8-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Kalanisi (IRE) - Impressive Choice (IRE) (Be My Guest (USA))
  • Last Race: Catterick, 02 Feb 2024 15:35
  • Result: Fell/7, towards rear, pushed along and outpaced after 3 out, briefly ridden on landing 2 out, losing ground when took heavy fall last

attheraces.com stable tours

Winner of two of his 18 starts and currently rated 122 over hurdles. Finished third, beaten 39 lengths, to The Four Sixes at Wetherby (2m5½f) on Boxing Day off a mark of 125.

A horse who has the size and scope to make into a good chaser. He was below par the last day after running well on his stable debut, but he’s working well again since the New Year and is ready to run.

Schalke (GB)

  • Breeding: Malinas (GER) - Prospero's Belle (IRE) (King's Theatre (IRE))
  • Next Race: Haydock, 20 Mar 2024 17:00
  • Form: 4-89888

attheraces.com stable tours

Winner of three of his 21 starts and currently rated 118 over hurdles and 113 over fences. Below par this season, finishing last of eight, beaten 66 lengths, to Imaginary Dragon in a handicap hurdle at Kelso (2m6½f) in December on his latest start off a mark of 122.

A three-time winner already, and as he’s related to Monalee and Be My Belle, he had his wind done again after Kelso, and we should be able to find a decent handicap over three miles for him. His Grade 3 hurdle run at Sandown last year was very pleasing.

Socks Off (IRE)

  • 7-y-o; brown gelding
  • Breeding: Society Rock (IRE) - Deliziosa (IRE) (Iffraaj (UK))
  • Last Race: Hexham, 13 May 2023 16:00
  • Result: 5/6, chased leaders, pushed along home turn, soon dropped away

attheraces.com stable tours

Winner of two of his 22 starts and currently rated 103 over hurdles. Finished fifth, beaten 15½ lengths, to Moonlight Glory in a handicap hurdle at Hexham (2m4f) in May off a mark of 104 when last seen in action.

A horse Adrian Keatley did well with. He’s been a little bit unfortunate on a couple of occasions for us since winning at Sedgefield, but he’ll compete off his mark and will mix between hurdles and fences in the summer months.

Start In Front (FR)

  • 5-y-o; chestnut gelding
  • Breeding: Hunter's Light (IRE) - Extra Terrestrial (FR) (Astronomer Royal (USA))
  • Last Race: Wetherby, 03 Feb 2024 14:42
  • Result: Fell/11, rear mid-division, ridden home turn and no progress, behind when fell last

attheraces.com stable tours

Winner of three of his 20 starts and currently rated 110 over hurdles. Gained his last success in a handicap hurdle at Market Rasen (2m½f) in December when beating Parikarma by a length and a quarter off a mark of 108.

A seven-furlong winner in his native France but stays two miles well and should stay two and a half (miles). He’s versatile ground-wise and is a great horse for his owner Robin Oliver, who loves his racing.

Sycamore Gap (GB)

  • 4-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Sea The Stars (IRE) - Tadpole (UK) (Sir Percy (UK))
  • Last Race: Wolverhampton, 09 Mar 2024 15:50
  • Result: 6/8, midfield, pushed along 2f out, weakened 1f out

attheraces.com stable tours

Finished seventh, beaten seven and a half lengths, to Kabuki in a bumper at Newcastle in December.

He is going down the Flat route now and is in at Newcastle on Monday. Hopefully, he should do well for us.

The Churchill Lad (IRE)

  • Breeding: Churchill (IRE) - Imalwayshotforyou (USA) (Discreetly Mine (USA))
  • Last Race: Kelso, 02 Mar 2024 14:50
  • Result: 4/17, raced wide, close up, ridden 3 out, hit last, kept on one pace

attheraces.com stable tours

Winner of four of his 17 starts and currently rated 119 over hurdles. Returned to winning form with a four-and-a-half-length victory from Goodbinator in a handicap hurdle at Haydock (1m7½f) in December off a mark of 114, but only third, beaten 13 lengths, to Ginger Mail at Kelso (2m) last Sunday.

A winner this season at Haydock when making all. His current mark of 119 should be within his range, and he can always revert to the Flat come the summer.

Tom Cody (IRE)

  • Breeding: Morozov (USA) - Smiths Lady (IRE) (Anshan (IRE))
  • Last Race: Catterick, 06 Mar 2024 15:45
  • Result: 4/7, held up in last pair, closer at 15th, pushed along in 4th before 3 out, outpaced between last two, went modest 4th again run-in

attheraces.com stable tours

Winner of two of his eight starts and currently rated 107 over fences. A winner twice this season, scoring by five and a half lengths from Old Page in a novices’ handicap chase at Newcastle (2m7½f) in December before following up with a 10-length victory from Aristobulus in a similar event at Wetherby (2m3½f) on Boxing Day off mark of 99.

A five-time point-to-point winner who seemed to grow in confidence after winning at Newcastle when following up on Boxing Day. He ran well last week, and I’d like to think he will be very competitive in the Go North Final.

Treaty Boy (IRE)

  • Breeding: Well Chosen (UK) - Miss Taggle (IRE) (Close Conflict (USA))
  • Trained by: W Coltherd
  • Last Race: Catterick, 27 Feb 2024 15:20
  • Result: 2/8, held up in last pair, good headway chasing leaders 6th, losing place when mistake 4 out, rallied into 3rd after next, hung left and went 2nd 2 out, stayed on same pace, no chance with winner

attheraces.com stable tours

No wins from three starts and currently rated 94 over hurdles. Finished 10th, beaten 30 lengths, to Rich Spirit in a novice hurdle at Catterick (2m3½f) in December.

He was bought after being placed in an Irish point, but he’s taken time to settle in and find his feet. I’d like to think he can recapture something like his point form now he’s going handicapping at his own level - he may go straight over fences.

William Of York (GB)

  • Breeding: Kayf Tara (UK) - Shady Anne (UK) (Derrylin (UK))
  • Last Race: Carlisle, 07 Mar 2024 15:10
  • Result: Won/6, tracked leaders, went 2nd at 12th, joined leader 5 out, ridden to lead narrowly 2 out, headed flat, driven and stayed on to lead again final strides

attheraces.com stable tours

Winner of three of his 10 starts and currently rated 107 over fences. Finished fifth, beaten 20 lengths, to Jet Legs in a novices’ handicap chase at Newcastle (2m7½f) in December on second start for the stable.

A horse who Dan Skelton did a great job with before he arrived here. I’ve only run him twice, and I’m still learning about him. I like what he does at home, and he’ll add to his tally in due course.

You Some Girl (IRE)

  • Breeding: Dylan Thomas (IRE) - Kallisti (IRE) (Kalanisi (IRE))
  • Last Race: Carlisle, 07 Mar 2024 15:45
  • Result: 2/5, in touch, headway to track leaders 3 out, ridden to chase winner next, keeping on same pace when not fluent last

attheraces.com stable tours

Winner of one of her 10 starts and currently rated 87 over hurdles. Finished fifth, beaten 23 lengths, to Follow Charlie in a handicap hurdle at Ayr (2m4½f) earlier this month off a mark of 89.

A Catterick bumper winner who has taken time to find her grade over hurdles. She will appreciate a little bit further the more she matures, and better ground will be crucial.
  • 6-y-o; chestnut gelding
  • Breeding: Black Sam Bellamy (IRE) - Sharp Dresser (USA) (Diesis (UK))
  • Last Race: Wetherby, 29 Feb 2024 14:15
  • Result: 5/8, in rear, tailed off after 4 out

attheraces.com stable tours

Promise in four bumpers when trained by Michael Appleby. Finished third, beaten two lengths, to The Galahad Kid at Stratford in August 2022 when last seen.

A new recruit from Mick Appleby’s yard. He was placed in three bumpers in 2022 and has settled in well, and he will be going novice hurdling. I’d imagine he’ll be best on spring ground.

Gavin Cromwell Stable Tour

The county meath maestro on flooring porter’s festival target plus grand annual favourite path d’oroux and kim muir market leader inothewayurthinkin..

  • Tuesday 05 March 2024

Gavin Cromwell is a farrier by trade, but his attentions have very much been focused on training in recent years and he has risen to a prominent standing in the National Hunt trainer ranks in Ireland.

It has been since the 2018/19 season that Cromwell has taken his training career up to another level, with horses such as the much-missed Espoir D’Allen, Vanillier and Flooring Porter giving him memorable winners on the biggest stage of the sport at the Cheltenham Festival.

Cromwell took the time to sit down with Kevin Blake of attheraces.com to talk his through his team for next week’s Cheltenham Festival.

Older Horses

Brides hill (ire).

  • 7-y-o; bay mare
  • Breeding: Dylan Thomas (IRE) - Wedding Cake (IRE) (Groom Dancer (USA))
  • Trained by: G P Cromwell
  • Last Race: Huntingdon, 25 Jan 2024 15:10
  • Result: Won/7, in touch, headway to chase clear leader 3 out, led next, ridden next, clear flat, eased towards finish

Form profile

A 149-rated chaser, she has won four of her 10 starts over fences including a Listed mares’ novices' chase at Huntingdon in January.

Trainer says

She’s on target for the Mares’ Chase, but we are very much hoping that the ground dries out for her. She won’t want it too soft. If the ground was ok for her, I think she can run a big race. Dinoblue and Allegorie De Vassy are two very good mares, but our mare will receive weight off both of them and I think she can run a big race over a trip we know suits her well.

Encanto Bruno (IRE)

  • 6-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Mahler (UK) - Stratosphere (UK) (Selkirk (USA))
  • Last Race: Leopardstown, 27 Dec 2023 14:20
  • Result: 9/13, held up in mid-division, ridden in 7th entering straight, no extra before last

attheraces.com stable tours

A 139-rated hurdler, he has won two of his five starts over hurdles.

We aren’t quite there yet with deciding what race he’ll go for. It’s either the County Hurdle or the Martin Pipe and the ground will be a big factor. If it is on the softer side, the County Hurdle is more likely I’d say. He’s fresh and well and is ready to rock. He doesn’t have a huge number of runs over hurdles to his name, but he jumps like a handicapper. He has good experience around the track and has handled it well. If we had a choice, we’d prefer a bit of spring ground, but sure we’ll see what happens.

Fameaftertheglory (GB)

  • 8-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Fame And Glory (UK) - Milan Athlete (IRE) (Milan (UK))
  • Next Race: Navan, 23 Mar 2024 15:25
  • Form: 761733

attheraces.com stable tours

A 134-rated chaser, he finished third in the Cross-Country Handicap Chase at Cheltenham’s December meeting.

He’ll run in the cross-country chase. He ran really well around the track in December, but that was a handicap, and he faces a much tougher task under these conditions. We’ll let him take his chance and hope for the best.

Flooring Porter (IRE)

  • 9-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Yeats (IRE) - Lillymile (IRE) (Revoque (IRE))
  • Last Race: Cheltenham, 14 Mar 2024 15:30
  • Result: 2/12, chased leaders, led before 5th, headed before last, soon switched left, no impression on winner flat, stayed on

attheraces.com stable tours

A 156-rated hurdler and 151-rated chaser, he is a two-time winner of the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

We are leaning towards the Stayers’ Hurdle. That isn’t 100% confirmed, but with Irish Point looking likely to go for the Champion Hurdle, that might just seal it. We had a really tough preparation for Cheltenham with him last year as he missed a month after Christmas, but he still ran really well. We’ve had a much better preparation with him this year. It’s a very competitive race, but if he brought his best form to the table, he’d be entitled to be in the mix with the best of them.

Inothewayurthinkin (IRE)

  • Breeding: Walk In The Park (IRE) - Sway (FR) (Califet (FR))
  • Next Race: Fairyhouse, 31 Mar 2024 16:55
  • Form: 4-22391

attheraces.com stable tours

A 143-rated chaser, he has run well without winning in four starts over fences.

He will most likely go for the Kim Muir. He lacks experience over fences, but ran well enough in his first handicap at the Dublin Racing Festival where he got messed around by fallers. I think going up in trip should be a help to him, but it is an unknown going into the race. He’ll need a career-best effort to get in the mix, but he’s in good shape and can hopefully run a big race.

Letsbeclearaboutit (IRE)

  • Breeding: Flemensfirth (USA) - Clarification (IRE) (Westerner (UK))
  • Next Race: Aintree, 13 Apr 2024 16:00
  • Form: 113338

attheraces.com stable tours

A 152-rated chaser, he has won two of his five starts over fences.

The Festival Plate is his aim. He’s run over all sorts of distances and has shown a high level of form over most of them, but we think this mid-range trip might be best for him. He ran very well in the Albert Bartlett last year and can hopefully run a big race again.

Limerick Lace (IRE)

  • Next Race: Fairyhouse, 01 Apr 2024 17:00
  • Form: 23-1211

attheraces.com stable tours

A 147-rated chaser, she has won four of her nine starts over fences including a Listed mares’ chase at Doncaster in December.

She’s on target for the Mares’ Chase. Ground won’t be an issue for her either way and her stamina for the trip is in no doubt. She has looked better than ever this season. She will go there fresh and well, so hopefully she can produce another career-best effort.

My Mate Mozzie (IRE)

  • Breeding: Born To Sea (IRE) - Leo's Spirit (IRE) (Fantastic Light (USA))
  • Last Race: Cheltenham, 12 Mar 2024 14:10
  • Result: 6/10, in rear, ridden and brief effort 3 out, soon outpaced, well beaten 2 out

attheraces.com stable tours

A 146-rated chaser, he has won one of his three starts over fences, most recently finishing a close second in the Racing Post Novice Chase at Leopardstown’s Christmas meeting.

He’s more than likely going to run in the Arkle. He’s going to have to run a career-best to win it, but he shaped really well right up the tail of the current favourite Found A Fifty at Leopardstown’s Christmas meeting and that form has worked out well since. Maybe the winner was idling, but we got further back than was planned and finished off very well, so we have reasons to rate him better than the bare form too. Marine Nationale coming out can only help him too. The better the ground the better his chance.

Path D'oroux (FR)

  • 7-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Coastal Path (UK) - Belle Du Bresil (FR) (Blue Bresil (FR))
  • Last Race: Cheltenham, 13 Mar 2024 16:50
  • Result: 3/16, close up, every chance from 3 out, ridden next, stayed on one pace flat

attheraces.com stable tours

A 139-rated chaser, he has shaped well without winning in seven starts over fences.

He’s going for the Grand Annual. His confidence took a knock after his fall at Leopardstown’s Christmas meeting, and I haven’t been happy with his jumping in his two starts since. The fact that he ran so well despite his jumping not being quite up to scratch in a really competitive handicap chase at the Dublin Racing Festival suggests he can win one of these if he gets his jumping back in full order. We’ve done lots of schooling with him and are hoping he’ll put in a better round at Cheltenham. If he does, he can run a big race.

Perceval Legallois (FR)

  • Breeding: Ballingarry (IRE) - Mrs Percival (UK) (Lahib (USA))
  • Form: 41-1F5F

attheraces.com stable tours

A 137-rated chaser, he has won one of his four starts over fences and fell at the last when in contention in a valuable handicap chase at the Dublin Racing Festival.

We’ve decided not to run him at the Cheltenham Festival. The British handicapper was very tough on him, so we’ll stay at home with him.

Stumptown (IRE)

  • 7-y-o; brown gelding
  • Breeding: Laverock (IRE) - Active Fieldgale (IRE) (Beneficial (UK))
  • Last Race: Cheltenham, 12 Mar 2024 14:50
  • Result: PulledUp/21, never closer than mid-division, behind and struggling 11th, tailed off when bad mistake 4 out, pulled up before 2 out

attheraces.com stable tours

A 147-rated chaser, he finished a neck second in the Kim Muir Challenge Cup at the Cheltenham Festival in March and most recently won a valuable handicap chase at Cheltenham in January.

He is an intended runner in the Ultima Handicap Chase. He seems in really good order at home, but I’m just not sure how well handicapped he is at this stage. He has really enjoyed Cheltenham in his two previous runs there, so hopefully he can do so again. The first-time blinkers seemed to help him last time and we’ll put them on again.

Marshman in good shape for Cammidge Trophy return

Marshman is poised to make his return as part of a strong Nick Bradley Racing challenge in the Cammidge Trophy at Doncaster.

Karl Burke’s Group Three winner has always been a high-class sprinting prospect and is the joint-highest-rated in the Town Moor Listed event on Saturday afternoon alongside William Haggas’ Montassib.

A winner in France first-time-out last term, Marshman would go on to run with credit in some top sprinting assignments before a pelvic injury curtailed his campaign.

Having resisted the temptation to seek Saudi riches last month, Marshman is now primed to return from a 259-day layoff in a bid to go one better than connections’ Fast Response who finished second to Vadream in the race 12 months ago.

“I’ve seen videos of Marshman and I know Karl is really happy with him,” said Nick Bradley, managing director of Nick Bradley Racing.

“Karl had a bit of a doubt about running over six furlongs on what is looking like potentially testing ground, but looking at the field I think we will have to take our chance.

“He suffered a pelvic injury at Sandown last year and we gave him plenty of time. He was brought along steadily until Christmas and then had a couple of weeks off before getting started again.

“When Annaf won that big race in Saudi Arabia, we could have gone there, but that was nearly seven furlongs not six and Marshman has never been a seven-furlong horse. We will take him to Doncaster to start him off and then take it from there.

“He is a year older and on looks everyone is very happy with him, they think he has matured very well. In terms of horses improving physically through the winter, he is one of the ones we are most happy with.”

Bradley and his popular syndicate could also be represented in the race by Grant Tuer’s duo Glorious Angel and Sophia’s Starlight, with the latter a consistent performer last term, winning Ripon’s Great St Wilfrid as the highlight.

“Sophia’s Starlight worked very well under Sam James on Saturday,” continued Bradley.

“Glorious Angel was going to go for the six-furlong handicap on the Sunday. We gave her a run on the all-weather the other day and we think she is much better on soft and heavy ground, so I don’t know where she will end up, but she’s in the Cammidge as well.

“My aim with her has got to be to win as much prize-money as possible, but also, if I can pinch some black type along the way this race might be a great opportunity to do that.”

A maximum of eight will go to post for the six-furlong contest with Bosra Sham runner-up Adaay In Devon (Rod Millman), course winner Baradar (George Boughey), Matters Most (Ralph Beckett) and Charlie Hills’ Orazio the others in the mix after Monday’s entries.

The other Listed action on the card will see Pam Sly’s Astral Beau in line to defend her Doncaster Mile title in conditions which could suit.

However, there could be stiff opposition with the likes of Roger Varian’s Group One-placed Charyn, Simon and Ed Crisford’s Knight and the Burke-trained Holloway Boy just a few of the names that could lie in opposition.

The traditional curtain-raising EBF Brocklesby Stakes is actually the second race on the card this time around and has attracted 21 initial entries.

Amo Racing saw Persian Force claim victory in this race in 2022 before the owners had to settle for second in last year’s contest and Kia Joorabchian’s racing operation is responsible for five possible runners this time around.

Meanwhile, Bradley could also unleash his first two-year-old runner of the turf campaign in the race, a Mayson filly trained by Tuer who goes by the name of Indication Ember.

He added: “We’ve entered a Mayson filly who is ready to run. They go very well on soft ground.

“I don’t quite know where she stands in the pecking order and she’s probably not at the top, but this will give us a little bit of a guide to the others.

“Amo have won the first two-year-old race over in Ireland and they have four or five entered in the Brocklesby, so whatever they decide to run could be hard to beat.

“But I’ve put one in there and we’ll take a look on Thursday and see what the race is looking like.”

Stability AI is growing its generative AI model portfolio today with the release of Stable Video 3D (SV3D).

As the name implies, the new model is a gen AI video tool for rendering 3D video. Stability AI has been developing video capabilities with its Stable Video technology that enables users to generate short video from an image or text prompt. SV3D builds upon Stability AI’s previous Stable Video Diffusion model, adapting it for the task of novel view synthesis and 3D generation.

With SV3D, Stability AI is adding new depth to its video generation model with the ability to create and transform multi-view 3D meshes from a single input image.

SV3D is now available for commercial use with a Stability AI Professional Membership ($20 per month for creators and developers with less than $1 million in annual revenue). For non-commercial purposes, users can download the model weights from Hugging Face .

The AI Impact Tour – Atlanta

Here’s an example video I generated quickly. As you’ll see, despite some slight distortions, the forms of all the objects in the video remain markedly coherent and solid even as the camera rotates around them.

Game creation, e-commerce cited as target use cases

“By adapting our Stable Video Diffusion image-to-video diffusion model with the addition of camera path conditioning, Stable Video 3D is able to generate multi-view videos of an object,” the company wrote in a blog post detailing the new model.

“Stable Video 3D is a valuable tool for generating 3D assets, especially within the gaming sector,” Varun Jampani, lead researcher at Stability AI told VentureBeat. “Additionally, it enables the production of 360-degree orbital videos, which are useful in e-commerce, providing a more immersive and interactive shopping experience.”

From Stable Zero123 to SV3D

Stability AI is perhaps best known for its Stable Diffusion text-to-image gen AI models which include SDXL and the Stable Diffusion 3.0 , the latter still in early research preview. Stable Diffusion 1.5 is an open source image generation model that forms the basis of many other AI image generation and video products, including Runway and Leonardo AI .

Back in December 2023, the Stable Zero123 model was released, offering new capabilities for building 3D images. At the time, Emad Mostaque, founder and CEO of Stability AI told VentureBeat that Stable Zero123 would be the first of a series of 3D models.

The SV3D technology is taking a different approach to 3D generation than Stable Zero123.

“Stable Video 3D can be seen as a successor and as an improvement to our previous offering Stable Zero123 ,”  Jampani said. “Stable Video 3D is a novel view synthesis network that takes a single image as input, and outputs novel view images.

Jampani explained that Stable Zero123 is based on Stable Diffusion and outputs one image at a time. Stable Video 3D is based on Stable Video Diffusion models and outputs multiple novel views simultaneously. Stable Video 3D provides much better quality novel views, and thus can help in generating better 3D meshes from a single image.

Coherent views from any given angle

In a research paper , Stability AI researchers detail some of the techniques used to enable 3D from a single image using latent video diffusion.

“Recent work on 3D generation proposes techniques to adapt 2D generative models for novel view synthesis (NVS) and 3D optimization,” the report stated. “However, these methods have several disadvantages due to either limited views or inconsistent NVS, thereby affecting the performance of 3D object generation.”

One of the key strengths of SV3D lies in its ability to generate consistent novel multi-view images of an object. According to Stability AI, SV3D delivers coherent views from any given angle.

The research paper on SV3D highlights this advancement noting that, “. …unlike previous approaches that often grapple with limited perspectives and inconsistencies in outputs, Stable Video 3D is able to deliver coherent views from any given angle with proficient generalization.”

In addition to its novel view synthesis capabilities, SV3D also takes aim at optimizing 3D meshes. By leveraging its multi-view consistency, SV3D can generate high-quality 3D meshes directly from the novel views it produces.

“Stable Video 3D leverages its multi-view consistency to optimize 3D Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) and mesh representations to improve the quality of 3D meshes generated directly from novel views,” Stability AI wrote in its announcement post.

Two Powerful Variants: SV3D_u and SV3D_p SV3D comes in two variants, each designed for specific use cases.

SV3D_u generates orbital videos based on single image inputs without the need for camera conditioning. Camera conditioning in generative AI refers to a technique where an additional input, often in the form of an image or a set of parameters related to camera perspectives or positions, is used to guide the generation process of new images or content.

On the other hand, SV3D_p extends this capability by accommodating both single images and orbital views, allowing users to create 3D video along specified camera paths.
