Gregory of Tours: Lives and Miracles. Dumbarton Oaks Medieval Library, 39

Shami ghosh , pontifical institute of mediaeval studies. [email protected].

Georgius Florentius Gregorius, born in 538 or 539 in Clermont-Ferrand into a prominent Gallo-Roman family, was bishop of Tours from 573 until his death in 594. His many writings—the most famous of which are undoubtedly his Decem libri Historiarum —are our most important narrative sources for the history of Gaul/Francia in the sixth century (not least because of the relative paucity of narratives from that period). His hagiographic works are fundamental not only for our understanding of the cult of the saints and its spread and significance in the period, but also as windows into clerical and (to a lesser extent, to be sure) popular views of religion, life, death, and the relationship of the human to the numinous, as well as the ways in which the latter manifested itself through human agency and in nature. They are also useful (if not very straightforward) sources for various aspects daily life in the later sixth century, and have indeed been so used by a number of historians in recent decades. The edition and translation of some of these texts are thus a very welcome addition to the Dumbarton Oaks series.

The works presented here are the Life of the Fathers ( Vita patruum ), the Miracles of the Martyr Julian ( Virtutes sancti Iuliani ), and the Miracles of Bishop Martin ( Virtutes sancti Martini ). The first is a collection of biographies of Gallic saints, all of whom lived within what was by the time of writing the Frankish kingdom, though some were born elsewhere. These saints were of many varieties: bishops, abbots, hermits; a slave, a beggar, and landed men. The models for these lives were the fourth-century Historia monachorum of Rufinus, and the Vita sancti Martini of Sulpicius Severus from around 400, though the latter is rather longer than any of the individual lives provided by Gregory. Gregory’s purpose, moreover, is, as de Nie points out, not so much to give us the “individual lives as such but the kind of life that all saints share” (xvii). Julian was also a local saint, a martyr of Brioude in the Auvergne, whose cult was incorporated into the liturgy of Clermont-Ferrand by Gallus, Gregory’s uncle. Saint Martin of Tours was already the focus of an important cult before Gregory’s lifetime, and the subject of the influential hagiography by Sulpicius Severus mentioned above. The narratives about both these saints concern primarily their miracles rather than their lives as such.

As is the case with most of the texts in the Dumbarton Oaks series, those presented here have been both edited and translated into English before. The standard edition used by most scholars is that of Krusch; there is also an earlier edition of Bordier, itself largely based on an edition from the end of the seventeenth century. 1 The Life of the Fathers has been translated into English by Edward James; and the other two texts are available in translation as part of a book- length study of saints and miracles by Raymond van Dam. 2 De Nie chooses to present a text in a more ‘normal’ or ‘correct’ orthography (by which is meant one that follows classical norms) than most Merovingianists might be used to, and thus bases herself on Bordier rather than Krusch, who preferred to stay close to very Merovingian readings. Beyond the matter of orthography, there were also some (mostly quite insignificant) divergences between Bordier and Krusch even with regard to content; de Nie’s text follows Krusch in all but two instances across all three texts ( Miracles of the Martyr Julian 5.1; and Miracles of Bishop Martin 60.9), and she appends a concordance of readings in both Krusch and Bordier. Chapters are also numbered differently in these editions for the Miracles of the Martyr Julian , and de Nie here follows Bordier rather than Krusch, but her notes provide appropriate cross-references to Krusch’s numbering as well.

Unlike the previous editions (but following the pattern of this series), this volume presents little information on the manuscript traditions and variants. It is also quite sparse in terms of introduction (30pp.) and annotation (56pp.) for the Life of the Fathers , the introduction and notes (and maps and family trees, both missing in de Nie’s edition) will still be useful, if now slightly outdated in some respects. For the other two texts, Van Dam’s study is of course invaluable, and obviously the present edition could not have aimed to replace it. De Nie also gives readers, in addition to a very useful general index, an index of illnesses, including signs to indicate when an affliction is caused by divine punishment or by the devil, and ranging from animal disease through cramps, fright, gout, fishbones in the throat, plague, rigidification and toothace to the simple “wound”. (Somewhat oddly—to my mind anyway—”death” and being struck by lightning are also included in this index of illnesses.) A whole entry with numerous sub-entries is devoted to Gregory’s own ailments.

In terms of the quality of the translations, there is little to choose between de Nie, James, and Van Dam. De Nie’s translation of the Life of the Fathers appears (to this reader at least, and on the basis of only a few sample comparisons) both more exact and close to the original in style, and more pleasant to read, than that of James, who also favors a more paratactic style, whereas de Nie keeps the structures of her sentences closer to that of the Latin; but James is nevertheless perfectly readable and in no way inaccurate. In contrast, Van Dam’s translations of the two other texts seem to me to be slightly closer to the original, but the differences between his and de Nie’s efforts are, in terms of quality, negligible. Readers lacking sufficient Latin for the original will thus certainly benefit from this volume’s translations, not least because James’s text is no longer in print, and Van Dam’s translations are embedded within a much larger monograph; and those with some Latin but still needing a translation will be glad to have the original on the facing page, which the two other translations do not provide.

This is a handsomely produced book, and eminently affordable for the amount of text and translation contained within it; I can wholeheartedly recommend it for any scholar or library interested in sixth-century Gaul/Francia.

College tour season is about to kick off. Here are 10 tips from college tour guides to have a successful campus visit.

  • As spring starts, colleges nationwide will welcome parents and students to tour their campuses.
  • College tour guides want people to arrive on time, ask the right questions, and have fun.
  • They also recommend students take the tours on their own, without their parents.

Insider Today

Spring break is right around the corner, and for many high-school students and their parents, that means many will be hitting the road to tour colleges around the country.

To make the most of your visit, Business Insider spoke with college students and tour guides. They know the campuses like the backs of their hands, and they know how to walk backward.

Here are the dos and don'ts of college tours from student guides .

1. Get there with no time to spare, but don't be late.

You won't get points for arriving early, so try to arrive on time. But if you do happen to arrive late , there's no need to worry.

"If something comes up and you are late, ask your guide what you missed once the tour finishes," Skyler Kawecki-Muonio, a senior at Sarah Lawrence College in New York, told BI. "They will happily fill you in."

2. Dress to impress, but don't sacrifice comfort.

It's important to look nice, but you don't have to don a jacket and tie. Tour-goers should put their best foot forward with a sturdy pair of walking shoes , and don't forget to dress for the weather.

"At Fairleigh Dickinson, tours go out rain or shine, so make sure to wear clothes that will keep you warm," Emily Bone, a junior at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, said .

3. Don't forget to sign in, but skip the résumé .

Most schools have a check-in desk where you'll receive a campus map and other literature. But don't bother furnishing schools with your portfolio.

"Students can leave their résumés at home," Henry Millar, a senior at the College of William & Mary in Virginia, said. "Tour guides generally do not have any sway in the admissions process whatsoever, so feel free to save the paper."

4. Pay attention on the tour, but do it solo if possible.

Some schools offer to let parents and kids take separate tours, which has advantages.

"Get excited about your child's potential future in college, but give them some space to see what they think of that school on their own," Nathan Weisbrod, a junior at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, told BI.

Students can comfortably ask questions without a parent present and compare notes afterward .

5. Ask all your questions, but avoid personal interrogations.

This is the time to inquire about any aspect of campus life , and don't feel shy about speaking up.

"Tour guides love getting questions because it allows us to cater the tour, especially in small groups, toward the needs and interests of the families on that specific tour," Halle Spataro, a senior at Bucknell University, said.

But some topics are off-limits, so don't ask your tour guide about their SAT scores , ACT scores , or what they wrote about in their essay .

6. Speak up, but let the student take the lead.

Parents may be tempted to raise their hands again and again, but this tour is about the student, so there should be space to let them shine.

"Try to take the back seat — or the passenger seat — but refrain from driving all of your child's interactions," Julian Jacklin, a junior at Reed College in Oregon, said. "Students who feel they can own that experience usually ask the most questions and engage with the tour more."

7. Say thanks, but don't leave with questions unanswered.

Maybe your guide didn't hear you, or your kid was reluctant to speak up. You can still get the information you want before leaving.

"There's a lot of information students are getting that day and a lot of excitement with being in a new place, which can make people forget to ask certain questions," Lorenzo Mars, a junior at Pepperdine University in California, said.

Therefore, get your tour guide's email address so that you can follow up .

8. You may know exactly what school is right but keep an open mind.

Don't be surprised if a city-living kid is suddenly intrigued by a small-town setting.

"The college search and college experience are all about getting to know yourself better and growing, so on a tour, students have to trust themselves and their judgment of the 'world' they've just stepped into," Thomas Elias, a senior at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, said .

9. Take in as much as possible, but remember to have fun.

Sure, preparing for the next four years can be scary and stressful. But it's also an exciting milestone, so enjoy the ride.

"These tours serve as great opportunities to learn more about colleges — along with their cities, culture, and people," Connor Gee, a sophomore at the University of Mississippi, said. "Have fun with it!"

10. Weigh the pros and cons of the school, but don't stop there.

Your tour may be over, but you can still learn other ways to immerse yourself in college life .

"See if the school offers additional experiences, like eating in the cafeteria or attending a class," Emily Balda, a senior at Seton Hall University in New Jersey, said. "Consider it 'food for thought.'"

Macron to Visit Amazon Rainforest With Lula on 3-Day Brazil Tour

BRASILIA/PARIS (Reuters) - French President Emmanuel Macron, who criticized Brazil's previous government for failing to protect the rainforest, will arrive on Tuesday in the Amazon at the start of a three-day visit to the South American country.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will meet Macron in Belem, near the mouth of the Amazon River, where the two will visit conservation parks with sustainable development projects and meet with Indigenous leaders.

"Lula wants to show Macron the complexity of the Amazon, which is not just a vast rainforest but also a place where 25 million people live," Brazil's top diplomat for Europe and North America, Maria Luisa Escorel, told reporters on Friday.

She said the French government intends to fund sustainable development and programs to stop deforestation in the Amazon.

Lula and Macron will discuss a common course to fight both climate change and poverty as Brazil prepares to host the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro in November and United Nations climate talks in Belem next year, both of which the French president will attend, the Elysée said in a briefing.

A stalled trade agreement between the European Union and the South American common market Mercosur will not be on their agenda because it is not a bilateral matter, Brazilian and French officials said.

Macron, who faces pressure from French farmers to kill the deal, has said he opposes the agreement that has been under negotiation for two decades.

Brazil, in turn, is unhappy with EU legislation passed last year barring imports of coffee, beef, soy and other commodities if they are linked to recent deforestation, which Brazilian farmers consider a protectionist offensive.

Despite those issues, relations between France and Brazil have recovered from a low point in 2019 when Macron led a wave of international pressure on then-President Jair Bolsonaro over fires raging in the Amazon. Bolsonaro accused Macron and other G7 countries of treating Brazil like "a colony".

"After a four-year eclipse and a virtual freeze in political relations between our two countries during Bolsonaro's presidency, we are in the process of relaunching the bilateral relationship and the strategic partnership with Brazil," a French presidential adviser said.

On Wednesday, at the Itaguai shipyard outside Rio, Macron and Lula will launch the third Scorpene-class diesel-powered submarine built in Brazil with French technology, part of a $10 billion program that will build Brazil's first nuclear-powered submarine at the end of the decade.

The program is a partnership with France's state-run Naval Group in which the Thales defense group has a 35% stake.

Macron will meet business executives in Sao Paulo on Wednesday afternoon and make a state visit to Brasilia on Thursday, meeting again with Lula and the head of the Senate.

Creighton Head Coach Greg McDermott: 'West Virginia Got a Good One'

Some respect being shown from one of the top coaches in college basketball.

  • Author: Schuyler Callihan

In this story:

New West Virginia men's basketball head coach Darian DeVries is receiving a lot of praise around the country and even got a shoutout from his former boss.

Creighton head coach Greg McDermott shared his thoughts in a tweet after seeing the news broken by Pete Thamel of ESPN.

"West Virginia got a good one!! Drock is the absolute best. I’m incredibly happy for him and his family!"

DeVries served on McDermott's staff from 2010-18 before taking the head coaching job at Drake. In their eight seasons coaching together at Drake, the Bulldogs had a record of 187-94 (.665) with four appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

The new head Mountaineer is known for his ability to develop talent and even played a big hand in Greg McDermott's son, Doug. "(Darian DeVries) was instrumental in Doug’s development and Doug would tell you that today," McDermott told the Des Moines Iowa Register in 2021 . "They put in a lot of time together."

Drake basketball coaching candidates: 9 possible options to replace Darian DeVries

college greg de tours

Darian DeVries is departing Drake men’s basketball for West Virginia and a position as a Power 5 conference head coach.

The 48-year-old native of Aplington, Iowa, spent six seasons at the helm of the Bulldogs, helping Drake to three NCAA Tournament appearances in four years (2021, 2023, 2024) and two Missouri Valley Conference championships.

He compiled a 150-55 overall record while in Des Moines.

Prior to Drake, DeVries spent nearly two decades as an assistant coach under Greg McDermott at Creighton.

As the Bulldogs prepare to move on from one of the most successful coaches in program history, here’s a look at possible coaching candidates who could replace DeVries at Drake.

FOLLOW THE MADNESS: NCAA tournament brackets, scores, schedules, teams and more.

Names are listed in alphabetical order.

JR Blount, Iowa State assistant coach

The Cyclones assistant coach is in his third season under T.J. Otzelberger and has more than a decade of coaching experience. He’s helped Iowa State to a 70-34 record and three trips to the NCAA Tournament – including a spot in the Sweet 16 this year.

Blount has been a key part of ISU’s recruiting success. He helped construct Iowa State’s lockdown defense and is a favorite among peers and players.

Oh, and he’s no stranger to Drake. He served as the director of basketball operations and an assistant coach across four seasons in Des Moines.

Matt Gatens, Iowa assistant coach

The former Iowa starter and current Hawkeyes assistant coach is an easy choice to put on this list. He’s an Iowa City native who spent four seasons on DeVries’ staff, first as the director of operations and then as an assistant coach before departing Des Moines for Iowa City.

Gatens helped guide Drake to four straight 20-win seasons – and nearly 100 total wins. The Bulldogs won the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title (2019) and earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament (2021) with Gatens on staff.

Eric Henderson, South Dakota State coach

Henderson just finished his fifth season as head coach of the Jackrabbits. He spent three years as an assistant before rising to the rank of associate head coach ahead of the 2018-19 season.

In five years as head coach, Henderson compiled a 109-48 overall record. His team has never finished worse than second in the Summit League standings, and he led the Jackrabbits to at least a share of the conference’s regular-season title in three seasons.

Jeff Horner, Truman State coach

Horner is a good example of a coach who worked his way up. The current Truman State leading man served as an assistant coach at Grand View University and as the varsity boys basketball head coach at West Des Moines Valley before joining North Dakota's staff.

A Mason City native, Horner frequently builds his roster by recruiting players from his home state. Horner – a former Hawkeyes player – has compiled a 104-66 record in six seasons at Truman State. He even produced an NBA player, Brodric Thomas.

Ben McCollum, Northwest Missouri State coach

The word success doesn’t even begin to describe what McCollum has brought to Northwest Missouri State. The Storm Lake native played college basketball for the Bearcats and then returned to his alma mater after a four-year assistant coaching stint at Emporia State.

In 14 seasons as the Bearcats head coach, McCollum has compiled a career record of 365-86. He is a five-time NABC Division II National Coach of the Year, the 2019 John McLendon National Coach of the Year (all divisions), and two-time Clarence “Big House” Gaines National Coach of the Year.

McCollum has led Northwest Missouri State to 12 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association regular-season titles, seven MIAA tournament titles (most recently in 2023), and has been named the conference’s coach of the year nine times (most recently in 2024).

Dean Oliver, Wisconsin assistant coach

Oliver, a native of Mason City, joined the Badgers after coaching stints at North Dakota and Illinois State. The former Iowa player and All-Big Ten guard wrapped up his seventh season with Wisconsin after being named an assistant coach in 2017.

He brings more than a decade of coaching experience to the table. At Wisconsin, he has helped the Badgers to two Big Ten regular-season championships, most recently in 2021-22.

Marty Richter, Drake assistant coach/current interim head coach

A native of Waterloo and a Simpson College graduate, Richter worked as an assistant under DeVries for all six seasons of his tenure. He helped Drake to a 150-55 overall record, three appearances in the NCAA Tournament and two Missouri Valley Conference championships.

Richter has played a large role in Drake’s recruiting during his time with the Bulldogs and was instrumental in bringing players like Tremell and Anthony Murphy and D.J. Wilkins to Des Moines.

Daniyal Robinson, Cleveland State coach

Should Robinson get the job at Drake, it would bring the current Cleveland State coach back to Iowa.

The 47-year-old Illinois native served as an assistant at Iowa State from 2008-10 and then returned to Ames to work on Steve Prohm’s staff in 2015. He was retained as an assistant when Otzelberger became head coach in 2021, before leaving for the head coaching position at Cleveland State in 2022.

During his time with the Cyclones, Robinson helped Iowa State to two Big 12 Tournament titles and four berths in the NCAA Tournament. He helped coach 12 athletes to the NBA.

Cleveland State has a 42-29 in Robinson’s two seasons as head coach.

Preston Spradlin, Morehead State coach

Spradlin just completed his seventh season as Morehead State’s head coach. Prior to taking over as head coach, he spent much of the 2016-17 season as interim head coach. He has spent over a decade working with a Division I program.

Spradlin turned around the program he inherited in recent years. He went from an 8-21 record in his first season to a 26-9 record in 2023-24. Morehead State is 128-100 under Spradlin’s direction.
