The Zappa Band

Zappa alumni group hits the road

One of the most ground-breaking, original, and fearless figures of popular music was undoubtedly the legendary Frank Zappa. And paying tribute to his late icon is The Zappa Band – a group largely comprised of former members of Frank’s bands. And for the first time ever, the group — who had previously opened a string of shows for prog greats King Crimson — will be headlining their own tour for much of June – beginning in New York on the 12th, and then wrapping up in New Hampshire on the 26th.

The Zappa Band’s lineup features Zappa alumni Ray White (lead vocals, guitar), Mike Keneally (guitar, keys, vocals), Scott Thunes (bassist) and Robert Martin (keyboards, sax, vocals), and ZPZ alums Jamie Kime (guitar) and Zappa archivist Joe “Vaultmeister” Travers (drums, vocals). Each musician played in the studio and on the road with Zappa during his career, while three of these alums played on Zappa 88: The Last US Show,  one of the most recent offerings from Zappa Records & Universal Music. The Zappa alums are joined by Joe Travers and Jamie Kime, who are no strangers to FZ’s music, to round out the ensemble.

Mike Keneally was 25 when he joined Frank Zappa’s band in 1987. Since then, he’s played in the bands of Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Devin Townsend, been a member of Dethklok, composed with Andy Partridge of XTC, written orchestral commissions for Holland’s Metropole Orkest, and made over 30 solo albums, including many with his band Beer For Dolphins. Scambot 2 is the most recent release.

“A lot of amazing Frank Zappa music played with intensity, humor and love,” says Kenneally about what fans can expect from the band. “We’ll be enjoying the opportunity to play different material from night to night; we know that often people like to attend multiple shows, and our repertoire is presently large enough to be able to change things up. So, while we will be playing the songs we played last year opening for King Crimson, we won’t necessarily play them all every night, and we’ll be playing lots of other things besides.”

Guitarist and vocalist Ray White got his first guitar from his brother, Charles, at 15. White’s first show was two weeks later. After four years in the Air Force, Ray headed to San Francisco. He played with Eloise Laws, Lee Oskar, Greg Errico and Lady Bianca (who recommended Ray to Frank Zappa). He played on several albums and tours with Frank. Ray was mentored by one of the world’s greatest composers. “Music is the Best!”

The son of two opera singers from Philadelphia, Robert Martin is a powerful singer, multi-instrumentalist and conservatory trained French horn player with an extensive list of top tier artists in his resume, including Frank Zappa, Etta James (on tour with the Rolling Stones), Bette Midler, Stevie Nicks, Michael McDonald, and many more. He has composed for prime time television, and mixed and mastered top twenty hits in various genres.

Born in LA in 1960, Scott Thunes’ musical studies included late 60s and early 70s rock, jazz, fusion, Frank Zappa’s early Mothers period, and two years of music classes at junior college, allowing him to become “fantastic” enough to join Frank’s band in 1981. He played electric bass guitar, synth bass, sang vocals, and became rehearsal director in 1984. Currently he’s the Rock Band Teaching Artist at Marin School of the Arts, Novato High School.

Drummer Joe Travers moved to LA in 1992 and joined Dweezil & Ahmet Zappa’s group “Z” in 1993. He’s played with Duran Duran, Lisa Loeb, Rich Robinson, Billy Idol, Zappa Plays Zappa, Eric Johnson and Joe Satriani among others. When not on the road, he spends his time as the “Vaultmeister” for the Zappa Trust archiving and preserving the legacy of legend Frank Zappa and co-producing and supervising future projects.

In addition to working with Zappa Plays Zappa, for which he collected a Grammy Award, guitarist Jamie Kime has played with Jewel, Dr. John, Frankie Valli, and others, as well as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Czech National Symphony performing the works of Frank Zappa. He frequently plays The Baked Potato jazz club in Los Angeles, and is on the faculty of The Musician’s Institute in Hollywood, CA.

Soon, the music of Frank Zappa will be celebrated once more on the concert stage, with the launch of The Zappa Band’s US tour.

The Zappa Band, Featuring Scott Thunes, Announces June Tour

Kevin Johnson

The Zappa Band will be back on the road with a headlining tour in June. The band consists of Frank Zappa band alumni guitarists Mike Keneally and Ray White, multi-instrumentalist Robert Martin and bassist Scott Thunes . They’re joined by drummer Joe Travers and former Zappa Plays Zappa guitarist Jamie Kime.

“Interesting times. Never thought we’d have our own tour. Not because we aren’t awesome but because the idea that the zeitgeist could handle us is overwhelming,” Thunes wrote on Facebook . “I am so proud to be playing music with these fine gentlemen and can’t wait to get on the bus. Thank you to all the fans that make things like this possible.”

After a show at the Whiskey A Go Go in L.A. on June 3rd, the band will be performing eleven concerts across the Northeast throughout the month. They’ll begin in Homer, New York on June 12th and get all the way down to Alexandria, Virginia before coming back north to finish on June 26th in Plymouth, New Hampshire.

The Zappa Band launches first headlining tour in the U.S.

the zappa band tour 2022

Guitarist Mike Keneally discusses forming the group, launching the tour, and performing unheard compositions penned by Frank Zappa.

The Zappa Band, an ensemble that includes musicians who previously performed alongside late influential guitarist and composer Frank Zappa, launched their first headlining tour in Homer, NY on Sunday and are scheduled to appear in New York City at Sony Hall tomorrow night.

The group, which includes guitarist and keyboard player Mike Keneally, long time Zappa guitarist Ray White, keyboard and saxophone player Robert Martin, bassist Scott Thunes, drummer Joe Travers and guitarist Jamie Kime will perform a slew of material from the legendary musician’s three-decade long career on the trek. All of the members save for Kime share vocal duties. “We were formed, essentially, by [Frank’s son] Ahmet Zappa in 2018 as the band for a tour he conceived called ‘The Bizarre World of Frank Zappa,’ which came to be known as the ‘Hologram Tour,’” Keneally told The New School Free Press in a Zoom interview last month. “It was a very moving and heavy emotional experience.” After the conclusion of the tour in 2019, the members of the group expressed a desire to continue playing Zappa’s music together, so they began to perform at various clubs, sans the elaborate visuals that were included in their previous tour. It was at the Baked Potato, a Los Angeles jazz club, where Ahmet dubbed the group as the “officially sanctioned Zappa Band,” according to Keneally. The band’s first post-COVID lockdown endeavors included a run of dates with UK prog legends King Crimson last fall.

“It was an amazing experience to be able to play this music for Crimson’s audience,” Keneally said. “But it was also very tightly disciplined in terms of time; we only had 45 minutes and couldn’t go a second over. So, it’s nice with these headlining dates for us to be able to stretch out and relax, and not feel like we need to get off stage in time.”

Keneally describes his experience touring in a post-COVID landscape as “surreal,” after a nearly two-year long absence from live performance.

“We were very careful about the tour bubble,” the guitarist said. “Our whole world was the bus and the venue.” The format of the upcoming headlining tour allows the group to play around with their setlists, performing a myriad of material both popular and obscure from Zappa’s repertoire, and often including unreleased or seldom-performed compositions, some of which were interpreted from handwritten transcriptions. With such a large body of work to play around with, fans can expect a unique experience from night to night.

“Me and Scott Thunes spent several hours going through boxes of Frank’s handwritten manuscripts, and I found this one piece that was just called ‘Number 2,’” Keneally said. “I think in the 80’s Frank did a series of numbered compositions, 1-8, and this was 2. One bar of this composition ended up getting repurposed in a song called ‘Drowning Witch,’ but this was a completely scored out melody, with chord changes, song form and repeats indicated. It’s all stuff he specified really cleanly, which is a rare thing to find in these boxes. A lot of the stuff we found was just scraps, but this was a complete piece we could learn how to play. It’s a blessing. It’s a beautiful song and it’s a nice thing to be able to play for people.”

Frank Zappa’s music has been known to include complex arrangements and challenging instrumental parts. Keneally, who has been credited as a “stunt guitarist” during his time in Zappa’s band, denotes “Alien Orifice” as one of the more difficult songs to pull off live.

“’Alien Orifice’ involves having me go very quickly from playing some really crazy lines on the guitar, to stuffing the pick in my mouth and executing some crazy stuff on keyboard, and then back again to the guitar,” Keneally said. “It’s this sort of dance, going from one instrument to the other, and if I think about it, I’m screwed. It can’t be mindless, and it can’t be automatic.”

Because many of the members house their own projects and endeavors, the future of the Zappa band after this tour remains uncertain, so be sure to catch this group of incredible musicians live while you still can.

Tickets to The Zappa Band’s appearance at Sony Hall are available for purchase on Ticketmaster .

The Zappa Band stopping in at the Narrows on its first-ever headlining tour

FALL RIVER — One of the most ground-breaking, original, and fearless figures of popular music was undoubtedly the legendary Frank Zappa. And paying tribute to his late icon is The Zappa Band – a group largely comprised of former members of Frank’s bands. And for the first time ever, the group (who had previously opened a string of shows for progressive greats King Crimson) will be headlining their own tour for much of June.

On June 24, The Zappa Band will be stopping in at Fall River's Narrows Center for the Arts as part of that tour.

And thus far, the reviews of The Zappa Band have been outstanding, including praise from LA Weekly (“for those of us who didn’t have the opportunity to see Frank perform, this is the best we can get and it’s damn good”), Pop Culture Beast (“each song was played to near perfection”), and the Fire Note (“a crew of old guys who knew and loved this music and seemed to be having the time of their lives on stage playing it again”), among other outlets.

The Zappa Band's lineup features Zappa alumni Ray White (lead vocals, guitar), Mike Keneally (guitar, keys, vocals), Scott Thunes (bassist) and Robert Martin (keyboards, sax, vocals), and ZPZ alums Jamie Kime (guitar) and ZAPPA archivist Joe “Vaultmeister” Travers (drums, vocals).

So, while we will be playing the songs we played last year opening for King Crimson, we won’t necessarily play them all every night, and we’ll be playing lots of other things besides.”

The Zappa Band

The Zappa Band

One of the most ground-breaking, original, and fearless figures of popular music was undoubtedly the legendary Frank Zappa. And paying tribute to this late icon is The Zappa Band – a group largely comprised of former members of Frank’s bands. The Zappa Band’s lineup features Zappa alumni Ray White (lead vocals, guitar), Mike Keneally (guitar, keys, vocals), Scott Thunes (bass, vocals) and Robert Martin (keyboards, sax, vocals), and ZPZ alums Jamie Kime (guitar) and Zappa archivist Joe “Vaultmeister” Travers (drums, vocals).

“A lot of amazing Frank Zappa music played with intensity, humor and love,” says Keneally about what fans can expect from the band. “We enjoy the opportunity to play different material from the Zappa catalogue; we know that often people like to attend multiple shows, because our repertoire is large enough to be able to change things up. So, while we will be playing some of the songs we played last year opening for King Crimson, on this year’s tour, and on Cruise to the Edge, we won’t necessarily play them all, and we’ll be playing lots of other things besides.”

Soon, the music of Frank Zappa will be celebrated once more on the concert stage at ProgStock 2022!

The Zappa Band Preps Northeast Tour with Whisky Warm-Up

The Zappa Band Preps Northeast Tour with Whisky Warm-Up

On Friday night, at the world-famous Whisky A Go-Go on West Hollywood’s Sunset Strip, the Zappa Band performed a two-hour, hometown warm-up date ahead of this month’s anticipated Northeast U.S. tour.

The six-piece band – featuring alumni members of the late Frank Zappa’s ensemble: bassist Scott Thunes, guitarist Mike Keneally, singer/guitarist Ray White, and keyboardist Robert Martin – scattered familiar Zappa classics, such as “Zombie Woof” and “Peaches en Regalia,” among deeper album cuts, as well as a few songs believed to be unrecorded by the avant-garde rock composer and guitarist, including “#2.”

Opening with “I’m the Slime,” the sextet offered both proper renditions and longer, extended groupings of pieces that included “Village of the Sun,” “What’s New in Baltimore?” and “Society Pages.”  With Zappa’s son, Ahmet, in attendance the band also nodded to the Zappa Family Trust’s upcoming multi-disc release, Zappa/Erie, with a uniquely arranged version of “Oh No.”

Rounding out the exceptionally talented six were Zappa’s archivist, drummer Joe “Vaultmeister” Travers, and guitarist Jamie Kime.  Next up for the Zappa Band are 11 dates across the northeastern U.S. corridor, beginning June 12 in Homer, New York, and including an appearance at Sony Hall in New York City.

Before the East Coast swing commences, however, the band has one more California tune-up: Sunday night in Escondido. Learn more here .

The Zappa Band Announces 2022 U.S. Tour

Dweezil Zappa Announces Tour Honoring Frank Zappa in 2024

by Em Casalena March 13, 2024, 12:06 pm

Dweezil Zappa has made a name of his own through his music career, but that hasn’t stopped him from honoring the best work of his late father, Frank Zappa. It’s been a whopping 50 years since Frank’s albums Roxy & Elsewhere and Apostrophe were released, and the rock icon’s son is going on tour to perform both albums in celebration of his father’s iconic career. The Rox-Postrophy Tour will span the US and it doesn’t look like any supporting acts have been announced.

Videos by American Songwriter

The Dweezil Zappa 2024 Tour will begin on August 1 in Phoenix, Arizona at Celebrity Theatre. Pending additional tour dates, the tour will end on September 11 in Santa Fe, New Mexico at Lensic Performing Art Center.

You can get tickets to the Dweezil Zappa 2024 Tour through Ticketmaster or Stubhub . Ticketmaster’s the spot to access the artist presale event, and you can get your code by signing up through Zappa’s website . The presale will kick off on March 13 at 10:00 am local.

General on-sale will start on March 15. If you missed the presale event, check out what’s available at Stubhub. Stubhub is backed by the FanProtect Program, so you won’t have to worry about fake tickets or scams that often happen on third-party ticketing platforms. Plus, Stubhub might even have tickets available that are lower in price than face value. Who doesn’t love cheap tickets?

“It’s been a long time since I’ve been on stage playing the music I love,” said Zappa, who hasn’t performed since 202. “I’m inspired to try new things and looking forward to playing with the best musicians I know. I’ll be bringing a hot setlist of Frank Zappa classics and personal favorites to all of the fans.”

Reserve your spot to see Dweezil Zappa perform some of his father’s best albums ASAP, as tickets won’t last!

I had only one day to tour Moscow. After researching many tours, I chose the Discover Moscow walking tour. Despite the cold weather, the tour was fantastic. Tanya was my guide and was great. She is a walking encyclopedia of history and facts and was able to answer every question I threw at her plus some. Thanks for a great day!
