Mexico is one of the most popular destinations in the world for all-inclusive resorts, with properties lining both of its coasts. And while booking an all-inclusive property may seem like a big investment up front, they can end up saving you money overall when you factor in the lack of food, beverage, and activity costs.

Fortunately, there are affordable all-inclusives all across Mexico that won't break the bank. Whether you're looking for a Riviera Maya beachfront party, a secluded jungle retreat, or a cool view in Cabo, there's an all-inclusive resort for you. For more vetted where to stay options in Mexico, read up on our 2022 Readers’ Choice Awards winners—including our readers’ favorite  top 10 hotels in Mexico ,  top 40 resorts in Mexico , and  top 20 resorts in eastern Mexico .

Where should I stay in Mexico?

The majority of Mexico's all-inclusive resorts are set along its two coasts. Some of the most popular east coast destinations include Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Cozumel, all of which are known for beautiful beaches, lively nightlife, and proximity to cenotes and Mayan Ruins. On the west coast, there's Cabo San Lucas, famous for its rocky coasts, and Puerto Vallarta, an LGBTQ+ hotspot known for beaches and jungles.

What is the cheapest time to go to Mexico?

The cheapest time to go to Mexico is in May through June or September through November, the two shoulder seasons for most of Mexico’s destinations. Beware spring break, when prices skyrocket.

Is it worth it to pay for all-inclusives?

All-inclusives can be worth the price if you plan on spending the majority of your time at the resort. Because you're already paying for all meals, you should dine on-property the majority of the time. Many on-resort activities are also included in the rates, so you’ll get more bang for your buck if you take advantage of them. The best part about an all-inclusive resort is the convenience—you don't have to think about budgeting or splitting bills with your party, and that alone may be worth the price.

Under $300:

Hotel nyx cancun.

The vibe:  Boutiquey all-inclusive Top amenities:  Infinity pool, gym, Balinese-style beach loungers What's included:  Meals and beverages at restaurants, Wi-Fi Price tag: $

At just 196 rooms, Hotel NYX Cancun is more on the more boutique side of the scale when it comes to all-inclusive resorts. As such, it feels delightfully uncrowded, despite being located right in the middle of Cancun's Hotel Zone. There are two pools, two restaurants, and a lobby bar, as well as a lovely stretch of beach lined with Balinese-style loungers. There's no formal spa, but you can get massages in private treatment rooms or on the beach for an additional fee.

The Explorean Kohunlich Chetumal

The Explorean Kohunlich, Chetumal

The vibe: Secluded jungle retreat Top amenities: Infinity pool, spa with Mayan-inspired treatments What's included: Meals, beverages, excursions, activities  Price tag: $$

If the beach isn't your thing—or if traditional all-inclusives aren't your thing—this is the hotel for you. It's a 40-room property located about an hour inland from the laid-back city of Chetumal on the border of Mexico and Belize, so there's no beach to be found. Instead, you're surrounded by lush jungle, singing birds, and Mayan ruins. On the relaxation front, there's a small infinity pool overlooking the canopy, as well as a spa with Mayan-inspired treatments. And for meals, you'll be dining at an open-air palapa-style restaurant serving local cuisine. The hotel is happy to set you up with bike tours of the Mayan ruins, excursions into town, or even sailboat charters. But who's to blame you if you only want to hop in a hammock and take in the soothing sounds of nature at the hotel?

Viva Wyndham Maya, Playa del Carmen

The vibe:  High-energy Top amenities:  Spa, archery, water sports What's included:  Meals, beverages, room service, resort sports Price tag:  $$

With more than 600 rooms, this is a big resort, and it certainly has the big energy to match. There's always something going on here, whether that's a themed party, fitness classes, or live shows. And there are so many activities to enjoy, too—trapeze, archery, kayaking, windsurfing, rock climbing, among other resort sports, are all included in the rate. While this is a family-friendly resort, there are some great adult amenities, including the spa, a nightclub, and an adult-only pool with a bar.

pool with palm trees and umbrellas

Solmar Resort, Cabo San Lucas

The vibe:  Relaxed, no frills Top amenities:  Swim-up bar, poolside sushi bar What's included:  Meals and beverages Price tag:  $$

Cabo isn't known for being an affordable town, but the Solmar Resort bucks the trend as one of the most budget-friendly properties. That said, it's a short (yet walkable) distance away from the nightlife of Cabo, but that means plenty of peace and quiet on property. This is a family-friendly resort, though, so you can expect a little noise by the two pools, but the overall vibe is very relaxed. The one thing to note is that you can't swim in the ocean here—the sea is too rough. But the pool areas make up for that, as there's a poolside sushi bar and a swim-up bar here.

Dreams Acapulco Resort & Spa, Acapulco

The vibe:  Budget-friendly, high-value Top amenities:  Spa, seven restaurants What's included:  Meals, beverages, activities Price tag:  $

Relearning How to Relax on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai

On Mexico's west coast is the busy resort town of Acapulco, where you'll find this budget-friendly resort. It is, admittedly, a little outdated, but it offers one of the best bangs for your buck when it comes to its all-inclusive packages. All seven of its dining venues are included in the rate, as are top-shelf liquors and 24-hour room service. And many activities at the resort are covered, too, including an introductory scuba diving lesson in one of the pools. The one thing you'll have to splurge on is spa treatments, but we think that's worth the extra cost.

Under $600:

Dreams Huatulco Resort amp Spa Tangolunda

Dreams Huatulco Resort & Spa, Tangolunda

The vibe:  Classic all-inclusive Top amenities:  Spa, kid's club, resort sports What's included:  Meals, beverages, resort sports like archery and kayaking Price tag:  $$

The state of  Oaxaca may not be nearly as popular as some of the major resort destinations like Quintana Roo (where you'll find Cancún and Playa del Carmen), but that means the crowds are far fewer. But at Dreams Huatulco, you'll find all the classic amenities you've come to expect in an all-inclusive resort. There are three pools, five restaurants, six bars and lounges, and a spa. You'll find plenty of daily entertainment, from live shows to karaoke nights to movie nights. There are also many on-resort sports like archery, kayaking, and windsurfing, most of which are included in the rate.

Akumal Bay Beach & Wellness Resort, Akumal

The vibe: Relaxed beach haven Top amenities:  Wellness center with yoga classes What's included:  Meals, beverages, Wi-Fi, one-hour daily snorkel rental, yoga classes Price tag:  $$

The 310-room Akumal Bay Beach & Wellness Resort is set on a wide stretch of soft-sand beach, and that's this property's main draw. Included in the rate is a daily hour-long snorkel rental, which gives you the chance to spot sea turtles just offshore. Landside, guests can dine at one of six restaurants, including a sushi bar and a Peruvian restaurant, as well as a 24-hour snack bar and a lobby bar. The wellness offerings include a spa with a sauna and whirlpool (massage treatments cost extra), a gym, and free daily yoga classes. And there are four pools for those needing a break from the sea.

Wyndham Alltra Playa del Carmen

The vibe:  Adults-only resort in the center of the city Top amenities: Spa, rooftop sushi bar What's included:  Meals at certain restaurants, beverages, beach towels, WiFi Price tag : $$

There's a little bit of everything at this mid-size all-inclusive resort, which is located a block off of the Fifth Avenue pedestrian mall in the center of Playa Del Carmen. Despite being in the heart of town, there is a small beach here (it sustained hurricane damage and erosion.) Other highlights include a rooftop sushi bar, a serene spa, and a large pool area. If you're looking for a vivacious time, don't miss the wild weekly foam party on Saturday nights—and really any show hosted around the pool. And if you're not, there's plenty of chill vibes to be found throughout the resort.

The Fives Beach Hotel amp Residences Playa del Carmen

The Fives Beach Hotel & Residences, Playa del Carmen

The vibe:  Contemporary, upbeat Top amenities: Beach club, spa, 15 bars and restaurants What's included : Meals, beverages, WiFi Price tag:  $$

The Fives Beach Hotel & Residences isn't exclusively an all-inclusive resort, but you can opt for meal plans that make it so. And it's a good idea, too. There are 15 restaurants and bars across the property, with cuisines ranging from Italian to Thai. There's even an exclusive gin bar if gin and tonics are your thing. The property also has a fairly lively pool and beach scene—there are five pools, each with their own bar, as well as a full beach club. When you're not dining or drinking, head for the 15,000-square-foot spa for some recovery. We recommend the hydrotherapy circuit.

Barceló Maya Caribe, Playa del Carmen

The vibe:  Never a dull moment Top amenities:  Spa, bowling alley, water park, escape room What's included:  Meals, beverages, some activities Price tag:  $$

You want it? Barceló Maya Caribe has it. The 1,000-plus-room resort has an extraordinary number of amenities: mini-golf, bowling alley, pickleball courts, tennis courts, non-motorized sports, theaters, nightclubs, a teen nightclub, a water park, a kids' club—you get the point. There are even two escape rooms (that do cost an additional point). With so much to do, you might find it hard to enjoy the beach, the three restaurants, the eight pools, or the 32,000-square-foot spa. One of the more unique features of the hotel is that some of its Premium Level rooms are swim-up—they open directly into pools.

Meliá Puerto Vallarta

Meliá Puerto Vallarta

Melia Puerto Vallarta, Puerto Vallarta

The vibe:  Family-friendly Top amenities: Rock-climbing wall, archery range, lagoon-style pool What's included:  Meals, beverages, some resort sports, WiFi Price tag:  $$

Programming at this well-landscaped Puerto Vallarta resort in Marina Vallarta is largely geared towards families. The kids' club is a major draw—they host plenty of events for kids and teens, from craft workshops to sports tournaments to pool activities—but programming extends to other parts of the resort, too, such as milk and cookies in your room. Adults and children alike can enjoy other resort amenities like the lagoon-style pool, tennis courts, a rock-climbing wall, and an archery range. For adults, there are plenty of wellness offerings, too, from the spa to yoga and stretching classes.

Mia Reef Isla Mujeres, Isla Mujeres

The vibe:  Private island Top amenities:  Spa, swim-up bar What's included:  Meals, beverages Price tag:  $$

This colorful all-inclusive resort is located on a private island off Isla Mujeres, itself just a 20 minute ferry ride from Cancún. Although it's not very hard to get to—it's connected by a footbridge to the main island and is just a few minutes from downtown—it does have a secluded feel. With fewer than 200 rooms, it's not an overly large resort, so it's a somewhat quiet atmosphere, but it is family-friendly and the small beach can get a little crowded. It gets even quieter at the small spa, which has just three treatment rooms, including a couples suite.

Iberostar Tucán

Iberostar Tucán

Iberostar Tucan, Playa del Carmen

The vibe:  Beachfront garden escape Top amenities:  Spa, archery range, kids' club What's included:  Meals, beverages, non-motorized water sports Price tag:  $$$

This five-star property is definitely on the upper side of affordable, but you can definitely find good deals for stays outside of peak travel periods like winter break. While it has a fine-sand beach that's definitely a draw for most guests, the property stands out for its lush gardens. You'll find much local flora throughout, and quite a bit of local fauna, such as monkeys, colorful birds, and even turtles. There are 16 restaurants and bars, including an ice cream shop, a cigar lounge, and a Texas-style smokehouse. Wellness is a big focus, between free aerobics and yoga classes for adults and the spa.

Hotel Xcaret Mexico, Playa del Carmen

The vibe: Artisan-driven, eco-minded Top amenities:  Spa, lagoon, 12 restaurants What's included:  Meals, beverages, entrance to Xcaret parks, airport shuttle Price tag:  $$$

This is a massive property with 900 rooms, but the layout of the resort is such that it doesn't feel crowded anywhere—they're spread across five distinct "casas" that are smaller in scale. There are 12 restaurants here, all of which are included in the rate, as well as a variety of pools and a spa that also offers yoga classes and meditation lessons. The best part about staying at any Xcaret property is that you get free entrance to Xcaret parks where you can see Mayan ruins, swim in cenotes, and go snorkeling. There's even an on-property lagoon for snorkeling, kayaking, and swimming.

Occidental at Xcaret Destination, Playa Del Carmen

The vibe:  Jungle fun Top amenities:  Spa, lagoon, nightclub What's included:  Meals, beverages, entrance to Xcaret park Price tag:  $$

Right next to the eco-archeological park of Xcaret, this 25-acre resort is filled with wildlife, from monkeys to coatis to iguanas. It's also filled with guests—there are more than 700 rooms. But there's plenty of space to spread out across the 11 restaurants, 10 bars, five pools, fitness center, sports courts, beach club, and spa. It should be noted, though, that there's no ocean access here—the beach lines a lagoon. Guests at this resort get free entrance into the Xcaret park, where they can see Mayan cultural performances.

Paradisus Los Cabos

Paradisus Los Cabos

Paradisus Los Cabos, San Jose del Cabo

The vibe:  Luxury at a fair price Top amenities:  Swimmable beach, kids' club What's included:  Meals, beverages, fitness classes Price tag:  $$

Though Cabo is an oceanfront resort destination, it isn't known for its swimmable beaches, as the seas can get pretty rough. But Paradisus Los Cabos is located on the only swimmable beach in the region, which makes it a pretty attractive place to stay. Beyond that, it's an upscale property with seven restaurants, three pools (some of which have swim-up suites), and lots of evening entertainment, from themed parties to cultural shows.

Dreams Sapphire Resort & Spa, Puerto Morelos

The vibe:  A little bit of everything Top amenities: Spa, water park, three pools What's included:  Meals, beverages, room service, WiFi Price tag:  $$

Just 15 minutes from the airport, this hotel allows you to get right into the fun after hopping off your flight. As with all Dream properties, all restaurants—there are five of them—are included in the rate, along with top-shelf alcohol and 24-hour room service. You also have access to the facilities at the nearby Dreams Jade Resort & Spa. Entertainment includes live shows, themed parties, and a Temazcal healing ceremony, and activities include resort and non-motorized water sports like tennis, archery, and kayaking. When you need a breather from all the action, head for the spa.

Birthday trip to Bucuti Beach Resort in Aruba

” Bucuti was absolutely amazing, fun, trip of a lifetime…perfect size resort for us. The staff were incredible as well as our room and food, of course, the beach! Thank you so much for your time and recommendation! “

Honeymoon to Le Toiny in St. Barths.

” Absolute perfection! It took us forever to decide on a hotel, but thankfully we listened and went with Le Toiny. I’m certain any place we had booked on our own would not have been as wonderful as this. Thank you so very much! “

Girlfriends Weekend to Nizuc in Cancun, Mexico

” We ate, drank, and floated all weekend! It was just what we needed. The hotel is an architectural gem and was so pretty to look at. The brunch was insane – I’ve never seen anything like it. We prefer to try new places, but I think we will be returning to Nizuc! “

Sunset Villa at Tryall in Montego Bay, Jamaica

” We loved Sunset and the staff at Sunset (Melva and Sonia were the best!). The villa was just what we wanted (to relax in our private pool or on our own beach). The villa was beautiful and we loved the open layout. We loved that we were on the beach (versus up on the hillside) and able to walk to the water sports center. Everyone was really nice and we would definitely return to Sunset. The food/drinks worked out fine and everything was yummy! Thank you again for all of your help. “

Sugar Beach was probably the nicest place I have ever been, both in service and scenery. We were upgraded to a Luxury Villa, with a terrace and plunge pool. The beach is incredible, and I couldn’t believe the snorkeling was that good right from the beach. We ate at Mango Tree at Stonefield Estate one night based on our taxi driver’s recommendation and it was very good. Thanks again for all of your help. Everything went very well! “

From powdery white sands to vibrant coral reefs, the Caribbean beaches of Mexico beckon travelers with promises of sun-soaked days, gentle ocean breezes, and a kaleidoscope of colors that paint the horizon.

In this exploration of paradise, I’ll uncover the 16 most beloved Caribbean beaches in Mexico , where the warmth of the sun is rivaled only by the hospitality of the locals.

Join me and discover the hidden gems and iconic stretches of coastline that make Mexico’s Caribbean shores a haven for beach lovers and adventure seekers alike.

16 TOP Beaches in the Mexican Caribbean

beaches mexico caribbean

To learn all about the best beaches of the Caribbean Sea in Mexico, my first choice is Holbox , an island in the state of Quintana Roo, northeast of the Yucatan Peninsula .

Holbox used to be a small fishing village, but in recent years it has become a very popular tourist destination in the country.

To get to Holbox, you have to get to the town of Chiquilá and take a ferry to the island.

How much does it cost to get to Holbox?

The one-way ticket is 220 pesos per adult and 130 pesos per child, departures are every half hour and the crossing time is approximately 25 minutes.

You will be able to find an option to suit your budget, there are from basic hostels to high-end hotels.

Besides relaxing and enjoying the beach, some of the activities you can practice are swimming with the whale sharks, appreciating the bioluminescence, fishing, kayaking, and snorkeling.

2. Playa del Carmen

beaches mexico caribbean

Another place you must know about in the Mexican Caribbean is Playa del Carmen and all it has to offer.

Playa del Carmen is the heart of the Riviera Maya, it is located in the Yucatan Peninsula north of the state of Quintana Roo.

You can enjoy the beach from your hotel, or go to some of the free access beach clubs.

Besides its famous “Quinta Avenida,” you’ll find beaches, cenotes, theme parks, museums, water activities, and much more.

Again, one of its main attractions is Fifth Avenue , the main street of the city, you can find cafes, bars, stores, hotels, and more.

You can also connect with nature by exploring the archaeological sites in Playa del Carmen, these are the archaeological sites of Coba and Xaman-Ha.

3. Akumal Beach – Mexico Caribbean

akumal beach

Another of the best beaches in the Mexican Caribbean is Akumal , its name comes from the Mayan language and means “Place of turtles.”

Akumal is home to a large number of turtles and you can practice scuba diving or snorkeling to have a close encounter with this marine species.

You will learn about the strict rules for swimming with turtles, as the Mexican government declared Akumal a natural protected area.

In addition to turtles, Akumal has become a favorite destination for many because it is characterized as a beach with crystal clear waters and white sand.

Something you should know is that it used to be a public beach, but nowadays it has been privatized so only a segment of it is free to access.

How much does it cost to enter Akumal?

The entrance fee is 100 pesos per person including the use of showers and restrooms, you must pay in cash since they don’t accept credit cards.

4. Puerto Morelos

mexico caribbean beaches puerto morelos

Perhaps one of the best places in the Mexican Caribbean is Puerto Morelos .

This important port of the state of Quintana Roo is located in the Yucatan Peninsula.

Because it still preserves its essence as a fishing village and has not had a strong transformation, it attracts thousands of tourists every year.

It is also known because it is home to the second largest reef on the planet, which is known as the “Great Mayan Reef.”

Definitely in Puerto Morelos, you can enjoy the tranquility of its beaches, the waves are low, the waters are crystal clear and the sand is white, fine, and soft.

You can have a great time doing some water activities such as diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and windsurfing.

Some options not to be missed are the route of the cenotes, the Selvática Ecological Park , and/or the National Marine Park Arrecifes de Puerto Morelos.

5. Playa Delfines

mexico caribbean beaches

Undoubtedly one of the top beaches where you can enjoy the Caribbean sand is Playa Delfines , in Cancun .

Because of its proximity to Cancun’s hotel zone, Playa Delfines is one of the most sought-after beaches and one of the most beautiful.

If you come to Playa Delfines you will surely be enchanted with the spectacular blue color of its waters, and its fine and soft white sand.

It also has a viewpoint where you can enjoy the incredible views of the Mexican Caribbean Sea, and have your picture taken at the Cancun photo booth .

Now, as for the name (Dolphin Beach) , you may wonder if there are any of them around here.

If you get lucky and come early morning, you have a good chance to see some dolphins from close.

Among the services offered at Playa Delfines are parking, restrooms, and showers for visitors.

6. Paradise Beach – Playa Paraiso

playa paraiso

Now it’s time to talk about one of my favorite Caribbean beaches, Playa Paraiso.

This “Paradise” is in Tulum , Quintana Roo, and can be accessed by car, bus, or cab.

Most visitors agree, myself included , that on this beach, you feel a very nice and relaxing sensation as if you were in paradise.

Because it is surrounded by nature and you can see a contrast of different shades of blue sea.

At Playa Paraiso, you can rent chairs and umbrellas, and eat and take a snack from the restaurants near the area.

It is also a good place to practice water activities such as snorkeling or diving and appreciate the reef under the sea.

7. Xpu-Ha, Mexico, one of the finest beaches in the Caribbean

mexico caribbean beaches

Xpu-Ha is a Mayan word that means “estuary of the two waters.” It is very close to Playa del Carmen.

The entrance fee to Xpu-Ha beach is around 50 pesos (3 USD) . But if you spend a minimum of 120 pesos on the beach club, you will get your money back when you leave.

Xpu Ha beach is quiet, its waters are crystal clear and warm, it is not very deep and its white sand is soft.

Some of the services available to complement your visit are beach chairs, lounge chairs, palapas, showers, restrooms, tables, and chairs.

They also have enough gear to practice some water activities such as kayaking, diving, and snorkeling to enjoy the marine life.

There is also a restaurant, where you can enjoy a quick snack or a full meal accompanied by delicious drinks.

8. Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres

playa norte isla mujeres

Isla Mujeres’ Playa Norte welcomes thousands of tourists every year and is one of the most visited beaches in the world.

In fact, in a Forbes article, I found that it is one of the 25 best beaches in the world in the Travellers Choice Awards.

Playa Norte is a public beach, and as its name suggests, it is located in the northern part of Isla Mujeres in Quintana Roo.

It is a beach of white sand and crystal clear waters; it’s not very deep so being there it seems as if you were in a giant pool.

To complement your visit you can rent a palapa, lounge chairs, umbrellas, and equipment for water activities.

Finally, if you love sunsets, you cannot miss watching it from Play Norte, it is a spectacle !

9. Maroma Beach at Punta Maroma

mexico caribbean beaches

Playa Maroma is a private beach in the municipality of Solidaridad in the state of Quintana Roo.

Because it is located at an intermediate point between Cancun and Playa del Carmen , its access is a little complicated so I recommend you to get there by car rental or cab.

How much is the entrance fee to Playa Maroma?

Playa Maroma is also a beach club so you will have to pay an entrance fee of 200 pesos per person, but believe me it will be worth it.

It has become one of the most beautiful destinations in the region due to its tranquil turquoise blue waters and soft white sand.

You can practice different water activities during your visit, among them are kayaking, diving or snorkeling and I believe there is an area to swim with dolphins.

There are also activities where you can tour the beach on ATVs, horses, or camels.

xcalak beach

This is an interesting place to go to, it is south of the state of Quintana Roo (near Chetumal and the Belize border) .

Xcalak is a Mayan word that means “twins” or “two entrances,” and its beach is still considered a virgin beach.

Because Xcalak is a fishing village , one of the main activities you can do is sport fishing, specifically fly fishing.

Xcalak is very close to one of the largest and most beautiful reefs on the planet.

Therefore it is a perfect place to practice snorkeling or diving, and also some other activities such as kayaking, skimboarding, or paddleboarding.

11. Chankanaab

mexico caribbean beaches

Chankanaab comes from the Mayan, Chan means “small” and Kanaab means “sea or ocean,” so Chankanaab is “small sea.”

Chankanaab is located on Cozumel Island, inside the National Marine Park.

How much is the entrance fee to Chankanaab?

The entrance fee is about 500 pesos for adults and 350 pesos for children from 4 to 12 years old, children under 3 are free.

Some of the services included are parking, restrooms, life jackets, showers, dressing rooms, hammocks, lounge chairs, and many more.

There are many activities to do, an example of these is swimming with dolphins, snorkeling, scuba diving, sea trekking, zip line, hanging out on the beach, and other options.

The park is open Monday to Saturday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

12. Xcacel-Xcacelito

xcacel

Xcacel is also considered a virgin beach and very little is known.

It sits on the Cancun-Tulum federal highway , approximately 50 km past Playa del Carmen and 20 km before Tulum.

Xcacel Beach boasts crystal clear turquoise blue waters and soft white sand, where you will surely have a relaxing visit.

It is a turtle sanctuary, so from May to November, you will surely be able to see the nests and/or births of thousands of loggerhead and white turtles.

Next to this beach, you can visit Xcacelito , a cenote surrounded by mangroves.

13. Xcalacocos

xcalacocos

This pristine beach is just a few km from Playa del Carmen. Xcalacocos is a Mayan word meaning “Twin Coconuts.”

Due to the tranquility of the beach, its crystalline waters, with different shades of blue, and its soft white sand, you will surely enjoy a day full of relaxation.

Swimming here is a delight because of the shallow water.

Also, another cool thing to do at Xcalacocos is camping, just bring all the necessary stuff and you’re good to go!

Xcalacocos is surrounded by some cenotes, mangroves, and an orchid garden that makes a good activity to complement your visit.

14. Top Caribbean Beaches in Mexico: Playa Paamul

mexico caribbean beaches

Playa Paamul is a beach a little far away but very nice and well worth a visit. It has become a favorite destination for many travelers.

Again, Paamul is a bit far to get to, about 28 km from Playa del Carmen and 46 km from Tulum, I recommend you rent a car or hire a cab.

Besides being a super beautiful beach for its turquoise waters and white sand, it is surrounded by a magnificent reef.

Therefore one of the main activities you can do in Playa Paamul is snorkeling or diving to appreciate the reef.

To preserve the area and its cleanliness, you are not allowed to enter with food and drinks.

However, there’s a very good restaurant on-site with good food and reasonably priced.

15. Playa Tortuga

caribbean beaches mexico

We’re reaching the end of this article, so I wanna talk about another important and popular beach in the heart of Cancun: Playa Tortuga .

It is right in the northern area of Cancun’s hotel zone, so if you are staying there you can’t miss it.

Since it has parking you can access it by private car or public transportation, there is a bus that runs throughout the hotel zone.

It is also a very beautiful beach with turquoise blue waters and white sand, they are shallow so the waves are calm.

Due to the abundance of reefs, diving and snorkeling are must-do activities!

Playa Tortuga features restaurants, public restrooms, and rental of lounge chairs, umbrellas, and more.

16. El Cielo Cozumel

caribbean beaches mexico

Oh yes, the home of Starfish. Playa El Cielo (Sky Beach) boasts the largest starfish population in all of the Mexican Caribbean.

Because it is approximately 800 meters off the coast of Cozumel, you will have to take a boat or catamaran.

These leave from 3 different points in the Chankanaab Park, at the dock of the Colombia Lagoon, and Palancar Beach.

The main activity to do here is snorkeling to observe the starfish, and some other species such as fish, manta rays, turtles, and more.

Top Caribbean Beaches in Mexico: Conclusion

The Caribbean beaches in Mexico stand as a testament to the country’s breathtaking natural beauty and diverse coastal landscapes.

From the pristine white sands and crystal-clear waters to the vibrant marine life and lush greenery, these 16 beloved beaches offer a paradise for every type of traveler.

Whether you seek relaxation under swaying palm trees, thrilling water activities, or a taste of local culture, Mexico’s Caribbean coast has it all.

The unique charm and warmth of each destination make them not just destinations, but experiences to cherish. So, pack your sunscreen, embrace the laid-back atmosphere, and let the magic of Mexico’s Caribbean beaches create memories that will last a lifetime.

Introducing Mexico's Caribbean coast: where to go, stay & play

Jaillan Yehia

Jaillan Yehia

  • Pinterest (5 shares)

If you're looking for the perfect combo of beach vibes, local culture, lively entertainment and wonderful wildlife then our beginner's guide to Mexico's Caribbean coast will give you the overview you need to plan your very own dream holiday.

A beginner's guide to Mexico's Caribbean coast

So, prepare to don your sombrero and become one of the more than 30 million visitors who choose to spend their holidays sipping margaritas in Mexico * - aribba !

Getting to Mexico : see the latest offers on holidays to Mexico's Caribbean coast * with TUI.

A mini Mexican geography lesson

One of the first things you'll notice when you're planning your trip to Mexico's Caribbean coast is that the region seems to have quite a few other names, such as the Yucatan Peninsula , Quintana Roo and the Mayan Riviera .

It can be quite confusing if you're new to Mexico until you have a chance to wrap your head around the area's unique geography and understand the variety of atmospheres and activities on offer along the coast for different types of holidaymakers.

Mexico is a vast country; it's fifteen times bigger than the UK. Unless you're off to explore Mexico City or one of the handfuls of popular inland destinations, you'll find the main resorts in Mexico are understandably sprinkled along the country's beautiful coastline.

If you're swimming in the sea at one of the glitzy resorts in the west of Mexico (think Cabo San Lucas or Puerto Vallarta ), you'll be in the Pacific Ocean off Mexico's Pacific coast * .

However, if you've decided to holiday on the Caribbean side, you'll be on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, that's the bit that juts out into the Gulf of Mexico.

Map of Mexico

This is home to two different Mexican states: Yucatan (which actually has its own northern beaches called the Emerald Coast ) and Quintana Roo , home to the entire length of Mexico's Caribbean coastline.

It's often called the Mayan Riviera because of its historical connections with the ancient Mayan people and many excursions on offer here focus on exploring Mayan civilisation.

There's also a newer tourist region a little further south along Mexico's Caribbean coast towards the Belize border known as the Costa Maya ; this includes natural wonders such as the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve making it perfect for eco-lovers.

Which resort is right for you?

Most of the famous places you've heard of in this part of Mexico are strung in a line down the eastern stretch of shore. From Puerto Morelos to Tulum , these include Playa del Carmen , Cancun and Akumal Beach .

Cancun, at the northern tip of the peninsula, is the jumping-off point for almost all new arrivals heading to the Caribbean coast and is the second most popular place to fly into in Mexico after the capital city.

Most transfers drive down Highway 307, which also serves the palatial all-inclusive beachfront resorts that enjoy private stretches of sand, and this same road goes all the way to Belize.

While Cancun * is the location of many of Mexico's biggest resorts the city is technically not part of the Mayan Riviera itself and has a slightly different vibe. It's a large and lively place where as well the fantastic beaches, clubs, bars, restaurants and shops are a big draw.

Cancun has a reputation for being the coast's party town and the restaurant scene undoubtedly serves up some of the best and most diverse cuisines in the entire country but you're equally likely to enjoy a casual taco in a low-key cantina.

Aerial view of the seven mile long main beach at Cancun

Activity seekers and nature lovers are also in for a treat; you can try every type of water sport off the coast here as well as golfing, horse-riding and wildlife encounters. Plus, there are plenty of day trips to places like Isla Mujeres * and Isla Holbox * .

Puerto Morelos

Lots of famous holiday resorts around the world started life as laid-back fishing villages but Puerto Morelos * still feels very much like a quaint and sleepy small town to this day.

Puerto Morelos plays host to a few small hotels and yoga retreats, and is popular with off-the-beaten-track tourists but still within a short drive of all the big resorts.

This gives you the best of both worlds, especially if you're here in Mexico for the stunning sea and the white sand as opposed to the shopping.

Playa del Carmen

A perfect option for those who seek the nightlife of Cancun but also crave a hint of the fishing village vibe, Playa del Carmen * (or just Playa, as it is affectionately known) is an ideal middle ground and a classic holiday resort with everything on offer.

As well as the bustling pedestrianised strip of Fifth Avenue with all the souvenir shops and boutiques you could wish for, there's a long beach backed by bars and restaurants.

Green turtle, a common sight on Mexico's Caribbean coast

For marine life enthusiasts, it is very much worth a look: one of the best places in the world to swim with turtles is at Akumal Beach (it means 'place of the turtles'), which is just outside Playa del Carmen on the way to Tulum.

Tulum has carved a special niche for itself when it comes to attracting discerning tourists to the Mayan Riviera. What was once a 2 km stretch of beach famed for its archaeological ruins has become one of the hippest places to holiday in the entire region.

Just because it's cool doesn't mean it has lost the laid-back vibe. Tulum * is the alternative choice for a young and fashionable crowd; think yoga retreats and celebrity visitors who enjoy Tulum's sustainable emphasis.

Tulum's beautiful white powder sands are idyllic but there are strong currents in the sea around this area so watch out with little ones. Luckily, you're never far away from a cenote; these natural lagoons are dotted around Mexico's Caribbean coast and make swimming snorkelling or diving an absolute delight.

Mexico's vital stats

  • Flight time from the UK - around 10 hours
  • Entry, exit & visas - UK passport holders, along with many other nationalities, can buy a Mexican Tourist Card on arrival, which is valid for 180 days
  • Currency - favourable exchange rates have helped more holidaymakers to venture to Mexico, and while the peso is still the official currency, you can easily use US dollars in many places here
  • In an emergency - call 911
  • Voltage - most of the coast runs on 110v so many European appliances may need a converter - you should investigate before your trip unless you have dual voltage appliances (110-220v)
  • Infrastructure - this area has a safe and modern road network, good reliable electricity supply and excellent phone and internet service meaning you can enjoy a beach holiday but still have all your mod cons.

When to visit

Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula has a truly tropical climate with daytime maximum temperatures ranging from the high twenties in winter to the low thirties in summer, and a sea that is always warm (between 26°C to 29°C).

Rainfall is at its highest between June and October, peaking in September, though with temperatures in the low thirties you may be ok with a passing downpour.

There is still a lot of sunshine during this period, never fewer than six hours per day on average, which is partly because much of the rain falls during the night.

The above guide shows the weather in Cancun . Although conditions are similar along the coast, you can read more about the weather is like at other resorts and see when we think is the best time to go to Mexico's Caribbean coast .

Although this part of Mexico makes a wonderful holiday destination all year round, there is a marked difference between winter and summer weatherwise, which is to do with how heat and humidity affects conditions.

While there's no great leap in temperature from 28°C in winter and 33°C in summer, when paired with the different levels of heat and humidity (moderate in winter; very high in summer), the picture changes significantly and has a greater effect on how it feels.

Typically, winters are so popular because they're dry and hot without being too hot, while summer can feel more oppressive and see more rainfall.

However, don't be put off visiting in summer, it's just important to know the difference - you can sometimes find the best deals on holidays to Mexico's Caribbean coast during the summer months.

US issues Mexico travel warning ahead of spring break

The U.S. posted a range of potential threats for Americans traveling to Mexico, including crime, drugs and sexual assault.

A beach in Cancun, Mexico

The U.S. has issued a travel warning for Mexico ahead of spring break.

The U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Mexico posted a range of potential threats for Americans traveling to the country, including crime, drugs and sexual assault.

It said travelers should be aware that crime can occur anywhere in Mexico, especially in tourist destinations.

"Travelers should maintain a high level of situational awareness, avoid areas where illicit activities occur, and promptly depart from potentially dangerous situations," said the advisory. "U.S. citizens should exercise increased caution in the downtown areas of popular spring break locations including Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum, especially after dark."

The advisory also issued a warning about alcohol and pharmaceuticals in the country. It said unregulated alcohol in Mexico could be contaminated, as some U.S. citizens have reported "losing consciousness or becoming injured after consuming alcohol that was possibly tainted."

The same was said for pharmaceuticals, as counterfeit medication is common in the country. The drugs could be the wrong strength or contain dangerous ingredients. The U.S. says medication should be purchased in consultation with a medical professional and from reputable establishments.

The U.S. also cautioned that drug possession and use in Mexico, including marijuana, is illegal and could result in a lengthy jail sentence.

"U.S. citizens have become seriously ill or died in Mexico after using synthetic drugs or adulterated prescription pills," said the advisory.

The message also warned that U.S. citizens have been victims of rape and sexual assault in Mexico, warning that perpetrators "may target inebriated or isolated individuals or may employ drugs that alter the victim's physical or mental state."

The advisory further cautioned against activity in Mexico that could result in an arrest, including drunk and disorderly behavior, public urination, open alcohol containers in vehicles, and gun possession — which includes even small amounts of ammunition.

The U.S. offered some safety tips for travelers to behave responsibly, watch their drinks, and stay with a group of friends who keep your safety in mind.

The U.S. also said to stay mindful of warning flags at beaches, and avoid swimming with strong undercurrents or rip tides to prevent injuries or drownings.

In the event of a medical emergency, the U.S. suggests travelers ensure their health insurance includes care in Mexico or purchase travel insurance.

U.S. Issues Travel Warning for Mexico Ahead of Spring Break

The warning is asking travelers to “travel smart” and “be informed."

The United States is warning travelers heading to Mexico to be aware of their surroundings ahead of the spring break holiday season.

The warning , which was issued this week by the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico, reminds travelers to “travel smart” and “be informed” as “thousands of U.S. citizens visit Mexico during spring break” each year. The embassy continued that “while the vast majority travel safely,” visitors should be aware of issues with crime, drugs, unregulated alcohol, drownings, and more.

“Crime, including violent crime, can occur anywhere in Mexico, including in popular tourist destinations. Travelers should maintain a high level of situational awareness, avoid areas where illicit activities occur, and promptly depart from potentially dangerous situations,” the embassy warned. “U.S. citizens should exercise increased caution in the downtown areas of popular spring break locations including Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum, especially after dark.”

The warning also reminded American travelers that drug possession and use is illegal in Mexico, including medical marijuana. It also advised that unregulated alcohol may be contaminated, that counterfeit medication is common, and that guns are illegal in Mexico.

When it comes to the country’s popular beaches, the embassy reminded travelers some beaches may have strong rip tides and “may lack lifeguards, warnings, or signs of unsafe conditions.”

The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico issued a similar spring break warning last year .

The U.S. Department of State classifies different states in Mexico under different warning levels. While travelers can “exercise normal precautions” when traveling to the Campeche and Yucatan states, the State Department warns them to “exercise increased caution” when heading to places like Baja California Sur (where Los Cabos is), Mexico City, and Quintana Roo (where Cancun is) due to crime.

The State Department also asks American travelers to “reconsider” going to the state of Jalisco, which is home to popular destination Puerto Vallarta , due to the danger of crime and kidnapping.

The State Department recommends Americans who do travel to Mexico keep people at home informed of their travel plans and enroll in the department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to both receive alerts and make it easier to locate them if an emergency occurs.

Travelers heading to international destinations can view all current travel advisories on the State Department's website at  travel.state.gov .

caribbean travel mexico

Travel to the Turks and Caicos Islands to see some of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the Caribbean, including Grace Bay. Home to one of the largest barrier reef systems in the world, this collection of coral islands also offers unforgettable experiences for snorkelers and scuba divers. Whether you choose to spend the bulk of your time on land or underwater, these islands make a wonderful retreat for those seeking maximum comfort in a tropical setting. However, hotel prices can be higher here than in other Caribbean locales, especially during the peak winter season.

caribbean travel mexico

Visit St. Lucia for its sprawling chalk-colored beaches, towering volcanic peaks and upscale resorts. You can start your day with a hiking adventure through the Pitons, soak up some midday sun along Reduit Beach and watch the sun set over the Caribbean Sea. You'll want to also save time for a visit to Sulphur Springs, the world's only drive-in volcano. St. Lucia's plethora of romantic luxury hotels, most of which offer incredible views of the Pitons, makes this Caribbean escape especially popular with couples.

"Posh" is the best word to describe the British Virgin Islands. The island country's beautiful coast sets it apart from other Caribbean destinations. The shoreline at Cane Garden Bay and the white sand beaches on Anegada island are stunning. Meanwhile, the boulders and sea pools at The Baths National Park (touted as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world) mystify visitors. One of the best ways to see these scenic islands is by yacht or on a boat tour from the nearby U.S. Virgin Islands. Alternatively, you can relax on a beach or by a pool at one of the upscale hotels.

caribbean travel mexico

Spring is the time to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands, particularly in late April when the boisterous Carnival season on St. Thomas gets underway. Regardless of when you visit, try to spend at least a day enjoying the unspoiled beauty at one of the many beaches along St. John's shoreline, including the popular Trunk Bay beach. Or, visit a fort on St. Croix for a bit of Danish colonial history during your vacation. The best part? Americans don't need a passport to visit these Caribbean islands.

caribbean travel mexico

Comprising 32 islands, St. Vincent and the Grenadines has something to offer every traveler. Enjoy time on the biggest island of St. Vincent in its capital, Kingstown, a port city where you'll find a lush botanical garden and fresh fish and produce markets. Then, hop on a boat and sail between the country's other islands for diving, snorkeling, golfing, sunbathing and photo-ops. No matter how you choose to pass the time, a trip to this destination will be one for the books.

caribbean travel mexico

One of the most scenic spots in the Caribbean, the Cayman Islands is home to premier dive sites, including Eden Rock and Devil's Grotto, as well as plenty of picturesque shorelines such as the world-renowned Seven Mile Beach. For travelers who want to stick to the shallows, Stingray City offers clear water, a sandbar and opportunities to swim with stingrays. Hotel and flight prices tend to be on the lower end during the summer months, so you can enjoy the palm-fringed white sand beaches and serene sea without ruining your vacation budget.

caribbean travel mexico

While you'll certainly find the standard Caribbean staples – picture-perfect sandy beaches, verdant golf courses and palatial resorts – you'll also discover that Barbados offers a unique roster of non-beach things to do. Travel here to sample Mount Gay Rum, explore the limestone caverns of Harrison's Cave and the Animal Flower Cave, attend a horse race at Garrison Savannah and dance to calypso tunes. Don't forget to save time for exploring the island's historical plantation houses and exotic tropical gardens.

caribbean travel mexico

With 16 major islands and hundreds of islets, the Bahamas derives its appeal from its stunning beaches and Caribbean Sea views. The country's beaches run the gamut from bustling Cable Beach to Pig Beach and Pink Sand Beach (both of which derive their names from their most unique characteristics). After enjoying your fill of the Caribbean sun, explore the Bahamas' expansive protected areas, including Lucayan National Park. Just plan on sticking to one or two islands to avoid blowing your vacation budget on transportation costs.

caribbean travel mexico

St. Barts is known for its scenic beaches (from beautiful Anse de Grande Saline to sprawling Anse des Flamands) and unique French Caribbean culture, which is evident in its cuisine and lively annual festivals. St. Barts is also synonymous with luxury, so you'll find many high-end hotels and upscale resorts here, plus harbors that house mega-yachts. To save some coin, grab food at a local supermarket before heading to the beach for a picnic.

caribbean travel mexico

The bright-colored buildings and natural features of St. George's harbor in Grenada offer a view worth savoring. But don't stare for too long – Grenada has more than 45 beaches to choose from, including the 2-mile-long Grand Anse Beach. Regardless of which shoreline you choose, you'll find clear water and white sand surrounded by lush greenery. If you need a break from the sand, head to Belmont Estate for a chocolate tour or stretch your legs on Grand Etang National Park & Forest Reserve's hiking trails.

caribbean travel mexico

St. Kitts garners its popularity in part from the soft sands and buzzing nightlife of Frigate Bay. While many choose to vacation here to relax at a resort on the beach and enjoy delicious cuisine (think: tasty seafood and fresh fruit), this destination offers plenty in the way of culture as well. It hosts excellent festivals, most notably the St. Kitts & Nevis National Carnival (known locally as Sugar Mas). When you need a break from the action, hop on a ferry for a daytrip to the quieter island of Nevis, where you'll find Oualie and Pinney's beaches.

caribbean travel mexico

Antigua is home to a wealth of diverse beaches – 365, to be exact. So whether you're interested in grabbing a bite to eat at Valley Church Beach or seeking a more secluded, romantic vacation at Half Moon Bay, you likely won't be disappointed. Plus, Antigua is where you'll find some of the best resorts in the Caribbean. The island also offers historical attractions to recognize Antigua's Colonial past, such as Nelson's Dockyard, constructed by the British Navy using enslaved people for labor, and Betty's Hope, an early sugar plantation.

caribbean travel mexico

As one of the ABC islands (along with Aruba and Bonaire), Curaçao sits outside the hurricane belt, meaning you'll find sunny, pleasant temperatures year-round and little threat from swirling storms that can wreak havoc in the Caribbean. The dependable weather and healthy coral reefs (compared to the rest of the Caribbean) make Curaçao a top destination for divers, snorkelers and beach bums. Plus, this Dutch Caribbean locale boasts a lively capital filled with pastel-colored architecture and culturally significant sights, such as a sand-floored synagogue from the 18th century.

caribbean travel mexico

Home to towering mountains, dense rainforests, colorful coral reefs and stunning beaches, Jamaica boasts diverse scenery that attracts visitors from around the globe. Adventurous travelers can hike, rock climb or dive while their calm counterparts can lounge on Seven Mile Beach's soft white sand or swim in its clear water. It's perfectly possible to spend an entire trip having fun and relaxing at one of the island's numerous all-inclusive resorts. But for an authentic dose of local culture, head to Kingston (the island's capital) to attend a lively festival, listen to reggae tunes and try local specialties like Blue Mountain Coffee and jerk chicken.

caribbean travel mexico

You'll find first-rate beaches and plenty of activities on St. Martin - St. Maarten, as well as an assortment of hotel options and vacation rentals for many budgets. Experienced and first-time scuba divers can explore the reefs, shipwrecks, sea life and rock formations that surround the island. Meanwhile, foodies can savor everything from fresh seafood dishes (think: conch, codfish fritters and whelk soup) to French-Creole specialties, such as callaloo (kale and spinach soup). Or, stop for casual barbecued meat and fresh fish at one of the open-air lolos located along the shore.

caribbean travel mexico

Aruba appeals to all types of travelers: Gamblers can hit the casinos, nature enthusiasts can check out Arikok National Park or hike through the Ayo and Casibari rock formations, and water lovers can explore the sea or sign up for a boat tour. Meanwhile, beach bums can soak up some sun along the shoreline on a lounge chair, typically without overheating thanks to the constant breeze Aruba enjoys. What's more, this island lies outside the hurricane belt, so it's an ideal place to visit year-round, though room rates are generally lowest in late summer.

caribbean travel mexico

Compared to its neighbors, this group of islands has flown under the radar for years but is worth a visit. In this French Caribbean archipelago, you can explore white, golden and black sand beaches. Plus, more than 70% of Guadeloupe's territory is protected nature reserves – not to mention several marine parks complement their dry counterparts – making the country perfect for ecotourists and scuba divers. These preserved areas also appeal to those looking to avoid the crowded resorts and tourist hot spots of more popular Caribbean destinations.

U.S. warns spring break travelers to Mexico to "exercise increased caution"

February 29, 2024 / 6:39 PM EST / CBS News

The U.S. on Thursday warned American citizens traveling to Mexico for spring break to exercise increased caution.

"Crime, including violent crime, can occur anywhere in Mexico, including in popular tourist destinations," the U.S. Mission to Mexico said in a news release. It advised travelers to maintain situational awareness and promptly leave potentially dangerous situations.

The advisory said travelers should be particularly cautious in downtown areas of popular spring break destinations, including Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, especially after dark.

Thursday's advisory also cautioned against using synthetic drugs, unregulated alcohol and counterfeit medication while in the country, noting previous, correlated deaths and injuries of U.S. citizens after using or consuming such substances.

The warning came after several recent incidents concerning foreign tourists in Mexico. Earlier this month,  an American woman and a man from Belize were killed in what appeared to have been a dispute between drug dealers at a beach club in the resort city of Tulum.

In May 2023,  a Canadian tourist was shot to death in Mexico's Pacific coast beach town of Puerto Escondido, days after a tourist from Argentina died after being attacked by a machete in another coastal town in Oaxaca. An American tourist was  shot in the leg in March 2023 by unidentified assailants in the resort town of Puerto Morelos on Mexico's Caribbean coast.

Southwest's Valentine's Day Sale Has Flights Across the U.S., Mexico, and the Caribbean Starting at $49

The sale ends Feb. 22.

It’s the most romantic day of the year, and Southwest is feeling that love by offering a sale in time for Valentine’s Day with fares starting as low as $49.

The sale, which travelers have until 11:59 p.m. PT on Feb. 22 to book, is available on travel across the United States and to some warm-weather destinations, including Hawaii and Mexico, according to the airline . The sale is available for travel within the contiguous U.S. from March 5 through May 29 and available for international travel, to and from Hawaii, and to and from Puerto Rico from March 5 through May 22.

Southwest, which uses the abbreviation “LUV” on the New York Stock Exchange, has tickets starting at just $49 one-way for the airline’s base “Wanna Get Away” fares , including from Dallas to Tulsa, Oklahoma, from Denver to Salt Lake City, from Chicago to Pittsburgh, and more. Travelers can also fly cross-country for less with flights from Miami to Las Vegas starting at just $149 one-way, and flights from New York City to Palm Springs also starting at just $149 one-way.

Those hoping to escape the wintry weather can also fly to Mexico or the Caribbean with flights to Turks and Caicos starting at just $131 one-way from Fort Lauderdale, flights to Cancun starting at just $193 one-way from Orlando, and flights to Puerto Vallarta starting at just $208 one-way from Los Angeles.

There are several blackout dates associated with the sale: travel from the contiguous U.S. to international destinations, to Puerto Rico, and to Hawaii is not available from March 12 to March 27; and travel from those destinations back to the contiguous U.S. is not available from March 19 to April 3.

The sale comes just over a week after Southwest revealed its new slimmer seat design , which will be installed on the airline’s new Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX-8 aircraft next year. Each new seat will feature an adjustable headrest, larger under-seat space, USB-A and USB-C outlets, and personal device holders (in lieu of seatback screens).

The airline has also made it easier for customers to earn status in 2024 .

Once a port city for travelers trading inland in the 13th century, Tulum has a rich history that can still be experienced today.

Home to some of the best-preserved Mayan archeological sites in the region, Tulum is located along the Riviera Maya and takes a little less than two hours to reach from the Cancun International Airport . Buses leave directly from Cancun’s airport or Playa del Carmen if you plan on taking a day trip to experience the cenotes, lagoons, or the archeological sites.

Enjoy the Beaches In Tulum

In addition to archeological beauty, Tulum is also popular for its beaches , with a coastline of powdery sand that stretches 10 miles to the UNESCO Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve . Tulum is divided into three “zonas” or zones each with their own distinct identity and vibe: the archaeological site, "El Pueblo" (Downtown Tulum) and the hotel zone, that is divided in North and South– and there’s a big difference between the two. If you’re looking for untouched stretches of sand, head to the lesser developed beaches on the north side. You’ll find more lively beaches on the southern side since they’re lined with hotels, restaurants, and beach clubs.

Hotels In Tulum

While you’ll find places to stay in Downtown Tulum , most travelers tend to book a hotel on the beach. Options range from glamping to luxurious hotels located atop a lush treetop canopy and boutique hotels with private pools as a rooftop, making it an appealing spot for couples on a honeymoon or for a group of friends. Unlike other parts of the Riviera Maya , Tulum doesn’t boast any sprawling all-inclusive resorts. Hotels are on the smaller side and tend to offer a more intimate experience with wellness-focused amenities like beachfront yoga and spas overlooking the sea.

Explore the City

No matter where you stay, you'll have plenty of attractions nearby, the city is walkable, but bikes are the preferred mode of transport. They're also a popular way to tour through the jungle and local communities to learn more about traditions like herbal medicine. Guided tours also take visitors through another one of Tulum's nearby natural wonders—the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve , a 652,193-acre preserve home to more than a thousand types of plants and animals (think everything from manatees to jaguars). Enter through the village of Muyil , which sit about 20 minutes south of the city, or embark on an adventure tour, exploring on hiking or kayaking trip through the canals and lagoons, ending with a refreshing dip in one of the region's infamous lagoon.

Tulum is home to quite a wide range of culinary styles, from street food and regional cuisine to elevated dishes from major chefs who hail from across the country. Travelers have a wide range of restaurants to choose from and can opt between a garden eatery downtown, a simple taco stand, or more upscale fine dining located in the middle of the jungle.

Police suspect U.S. couple are dead after their boat was hijacked in the Caribbean

The yacht "Simplicity", that officials say was hijacked by three escaped prisoners with two people aboard, is docked at the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Coastguard Service Calliaqua Base, in Calliaqua, St. Vincent, on Friday.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — A U.S. couple whose catamaran was hijacked last week in the Caribbean by three escaped prisoners were presumed dead and likely had been thrown into the ocean, police said Monday.

The accounts by police in Grenada and in St. Vincent and the Grenadines were a blow to those who were independently helping search for Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel and had hoped they were alive.

Don McKenzie, commissioner of the Royal Grenada Police Force, said at a news conference that the three prisoners escaped on Feb. 18 from the South Saint George Police Station. They hijacked the catamaran Simplicity on the following day and then headed to St. Vincent, where they were arrested last Wednesday, he said.

"Information suggests that while traveling between Grenada and St. Vincent, they disposed of the occupants," McKenzie said.

McKenzie said he had no conclusive proof that the couple was dead but cited a "low probability" they were alive.

Hours later, the main spokesman for the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force posted a video saying that while no bodies have been found, the couple is presumed dead based on the investigation so far.

Police report signs of violence aboard the abandoned boat

The suspects were being investigated for several criminal acts, including "bodily harm to the couple," spokesman Junior Simmons said in the brief recorded statement. There were signs of violence on the couple's boat found abandoned in St. Vincent, he said.

"Several items were strewn on the deck and in the cabin, and a red substance that resembles blood was seen on board," he said.

The nonprofit Salty Dawg Sailing Association has said that Hendry and Brandel were "veteran cruisers" and longtime members of the association, calling them "warm-hearted and capable."

It said the couple had sailed the yacht in last year's Caribbean Rally from Hampton, Virginia, to Antigua, and were spending the winter cruising in the eastern Caribbean.

A son of Hendry and a son of Brandel did not immediately return messages for comment.

A GoFundMe page created to raise money for the couple's family noted that Brandel had recently become a first-time grandmother, and that the sailing community was "shattered" by what happened.

"Kathy and Ralph, experienced adventurers, spent their retirement sailing aboard Simplicity, spending summers in New England and embracing the warmth of Caribbean winters," the page stated.

McKenzie, Grenada's police commissioner, said a five-person team was sent to St. Vincent to help with the investigation.

After his brief announcement on Monday, McKenzie and other police officials took questions from local media, including one reporter who asked, "Who is really to be blamed for this massive failure to keep these prisoners under the control of the (Royal Grenada Police Force) which has now resulted in this tragedy?"

The prisoners' escape is being investigated

McKenzie said police have launched an investigation into the escape and are looking into whether it was "a system failure" or a case of a "slip up."

"All aspects of that investigation are on the table," he said, adding that the police holding station where the three men were being held has "sufficient safety to prevent an incident like that (from) occurring."

When the reporter asked why the three men who were arrested remained in a holding cell instead of prison, Vannie Curwen, assistant police commissioner, said the men first had to see a magistrate who would decide whether to grant bail or order them remanded.

The escaped prisoners, Trevon Robertson, a 19-year-old unemployed man; Abita Stanislaus, a 25-year-old farmer; and Ron Mitchell, a 30-year-old sailor; were charged a couple of months ago with one count of robbery with violence. Mitchell also was charged with one count of rape, three counts of attempted rape and two counts of indecent assault and causing harm, police in Grenada said.

Simmons said the three men appeared in court in St. Vincent on Monday and pleaded guilty to four counts each of immigration-related charges, including entering the island as a "prohibited immigrant" with no passport. They are scheduled to be sentenced on those charges in March.
