Looking Back at 10 Years of LAMY Special Edition Fountain Pens

Looking Back at 10 Years of LAMY Special Edition Fountain Pens

Over the past few years in the fountain pen community, it seems as though we have become overwhelmingly obsessed with yearly limited and special edition pens and inks. Big names like Pelikan and Sailor have jumped on the bandwagon of doing limited editions, as well as smaller custom makers, like Edison.

But really, where did this craze for limited edition pens come from? The quintessential limited edition that really kicked it off in the pen community is the yearly release of the LAMY Safari. They are affordable and reliable, making them some of the most collectible pens on the market. So how about we take a stroll down memory lane and look back at some of the highlights of the past 10 years of LAMY Special Edition Safari fountain pens!

First Generation

The first generation of the LAMY Safari was launched in 1980 with 3 color options available. Those 3 colors were Terracotta Orange, Savannah Green, and Charcoal Black. They all came in textured finishes, with the classic LAMY faceted grip section and stainless steel LAMY nib (for the fountain pen version).

While these were not technically the “limited edition” Safaris that we all know and love today, they are worth mentioning, as they were what started LAMY’s longstanding tradition of limited edition Safaris.

Looking Back at 10 Years of LAMY Special Edition Fountain Pens - 2014 - Neon Coral

2014 - Neon Coral

In 2014, LAMY continued their trend of bright neons with a glossy pinkish-orangey neon coral. This special edition fountain pen had a silver steel nib and silver clip.

2015 - Neon Lime

The last in the series of bright Safaris from LAMY was the Neon Lime fountain pen. This special edition pen had a glossy, neon yellow-green cap and barrel with a silver steel nib and silver clip. It also came with matching neon lime bottled ink and cartridges.

2016 - Dark Lilac

Looking Back at 10 Years of LAMY Special Edition Fountain Pens - 2016 - Dark Lilac

After a few years of releasing neon finishes and bright colors for their yearly limited edition Safaris, LAMY decided to step up their game by introducing the Dark Lilac Safari, one of the all-time favorite limited editions of any brand in our community. It is a gorgeous, deep, dark purple color with a black clip and black nib.

Additionally, after many years of glossy-finished limited editions, the Dark Lilac came equipped with the very classy textured finish that LAMY offers on some of their Safaris. Many people prefer the textured finish, as they think it makes the pen look nicer and feel better in the hand. Plus, the texturing doesn’t get nearly as slippery as the glossy Safaris do after longer writing sessions.

2017 - Petrol

Looking Back at 10 Years of LAMY Special Edition Fountain Pens - 2016 - 2017 - Petrol

Another crowd favorite, the Safari Petrol was a dark, teal color leaning more on the blue side. Again, it came with the black clip and black nib, keeping with LAMY’s understated and simplistic design principles. With such understated designs, LAMY has really mastered the art of restraint, which I think shines through especially well with the simple, dark color of the 2017 Safari Petrol.

2018 - All Black

The All Black special edition of 2018 was a classic-colored fountain pen. This featured a matte black barrel and cap and came with a black clip and a black steel nib.

2019 - Blue Macaron, Mint Glaze, and Powder Rose

2019 was the first year that LAMY introduced not one, not two, but three fountain pens for their special edition release. These colors were known together as the Pastel collection.

Blue Macaron had a glossy pastel blue cap and barrel and came with a silver clip and a silver steel nib.

Mint Glaze had a glossy pastel green cap and barrel, and it came with a silver steel nib and clip.

Last but not the least, Powder Rose featured a glossy pastel pink cap and barrel and also came with a silver steel nib and clip.

2020 - Aquamarine, Mango, Violet

Looking Back at 10 Years of LAMY Special Edition Fountain Pens - LAMY Safari Candy Fountain Pens

Collections became popular during this time, so it was no surprise that in the year following the Pastel collection’s release, LAMY had another for us: the LAMY Safari Candy Fountain Pens . They came out with three vibrant special edition colors for 2020: Aquamarine, Mango, and Violet.

The Mango had a yellow-orange barrel, cap, clip, and finial and came with a silver steel nib. There was also a matching yellow-orange ink that was available in ink cartridges and bottles.

The special edition pen in Violet had an all-purple body, clip, and finial, and it came with a silver steel nib.

Lastly, the the aquamarine version had an aqua turquoise body, clip, and finial. The pen also had a silver steel nib.

2021 - Savannah and Terra

Looking Back at 10 Years of LAMY Special Edition Fountain Pens - 2020 - 2021 - Savannah and Terra

To bring it around full circle in 2021, LAMY announced the re-release of their original colors, the Savannah and the Terra! Upon making the re-release a reality, there were a few differences made apparent between the new Safaris and the first generation.

The colors of the pens are just slightly different, along with the names. Instead of being “Savannah Green” and “Terracotta Orange, ” they now have the sleeker, more modern names seen above. I think LAMY really hit it out of the park with this year’s limited editions, making it even more difficult for them to one-up themselves next year, as they seem to do every year!

2022 - Strawberry and Cream

Looking Back at 10 Years of LAMY Special Edition Fountain Pens - 2022 - Strawberry and Cream

For dessert lovers, there’s nothing better than LAMY’s 2022 special edition release of the Strawberry and Cream line. The fountain pen features a matte red body with a matching red clip. It comes with a steel nib. The cream version, on the other hand, has a matte ivory body with a matching clip and also comes with a silver steel nib.

2023 - Aqua Sky, Light Rose, and Spring Green

Looking Back at 10 Years of LAMY Special Edition Fountain Pens - LAMY Safari Deelittle Fountain Pens

LAMY churned out another set of pastel colors for 2023: LAMY Safari Deelittle Fountain Pens in Aqua Sky, Light Rose, and Spring Green. Each pen has a glossy pastel resin cap and barrel, matching trim, and is fixed with a silver steel nib. They are similar to the 2019 special editions but are more saturated and vibrant in color.

2024 - Blackberry Violet and Pink Cliff

Looking Back at 10 Years of LAMY Special Edition Fountain Pens - LAMY Safari Kewi Fountain Pens

The special edition LAMY Safari Kewi Fountain Pens for 2024 are quite unique as they feature different-colored grip sections. The first is Blackberry Violet, which has a glossy dark purple cap and barrel with a light purple section and finial. Pink Cliff has a matte blue-grey cap and barrel with a pink section and finial. Both these pens come with black trim and a black clip. These pens were also released with matching inks (Blackberry and Cliff).

The Bottom Line

All in all, the fountain pen community certainly seems to have enjoyed collecting these special editions pens. LAMY always finds a way to create something new and exciting that gives the community something to look forward to and anticipate going into the new year. What have been your favorite LAMY Safari limited editions over the years? Or perhaps you simply have a list of the top LAMY fountain pens for writers that you want to share? The LAMY  safari is a workhorse pen, known throughout the fountain pen community for its ruggedness, reliability, and no-nonsense functionality. FAQs about Fountain Pens

How do i fill a fountain pen with ink 8eda1617-f73a-4daf-8245-6d2bf4abeb7b.

It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above.

Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:

  • Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here .
  • Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
  • Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
  • Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
  • Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here .

Check out more info on these filling mechanisms including a video on how to fill each one on our blog .

How do I clean a fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.

It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:

  • How to Clean a Cartridge/Converter Pen
  • How to Clean an Eyedropper Pen
  • How to Clean a Piston Pen

How often do I need to clean my fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors.

Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

My pen won’t write! What do I do? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

First things first... make sure you have ink in the pen! Be sure that the ink cartridge or converter is seated properly in the pen, and that you aren't out of ink.

We always recommend you give your pen a good cleaning first, using our Goulet Pen Flush , or a drop of dish soap in some water. New pens often have some machining oil residue left in the feed, so a good cleaning often does the trick first.

If that still doesn't work, try priming the feed. This consists of either dipping your pen nib and feed in ink, or forcing ink from the converter down into the feed.

If it’s still not working after that, please reach out to us so we can help!

What's your return policy? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

You can submit a return request within 30 days of your order date. You can read all our Return Policies here .

To initiate a return, please submit a request at the Return Portal . Our Customer Care team might reach out to you for more information.

Please note we are unable to accept a return of any Namiki or Sailor Bespoke fountain pen for any reason once it has been used with ink. Please thoroughly inspect and dry test the pen before use.

Lamy safari: the design chameleon.

15 grams, 14 centimetres. One should not allow oneself to be deceived by this slight apparition: The LAMY safari is any thing but a lightweight. In fact, it is the bestselling writing instrument in the world in its category. What lies behind the fascination with the LAMY safari ?

lamy safari zielony

There are few places on earth where it is not to be found. In lecture theatres and architects’ studios, in law firms and offices; in Mumbai and New York, in London and Berlin, from Beijing to Moscow. It is an all-rounder which can be used almost everywhere, for writing as well as designing and drawing. What makes this writing instrument so beloved?

Its unpretentious appearance plays a great part, art director Mike Meiré believes. “The LAMY safari is a chameleon. It is changeable and adapts to different environments, both in terms of function and design.”

The same can be said of its twin, the LAMY AL-star , which is made of aluminium, as well as the transparent LAMY vista .

This versatility is based on the principle of consistent reduction, which Lamy has adopted as a philosophy: The design is resolutely derived from the function and forgoes superfluous details. “We not only ask: What looks good?, but above all: What improves the product?”, explains Marco Achenbach, responsible for product management and development at Lamy.

lamy safari zielony

Perfect for frequent writers: the LAMY safari with its ergonomic recessed grip

So it is that everything that makes the LAMY safari unmistakable is also critical for its functionality. The sturdy clip, with which the LAMY safari can be attached to a notebook or shirt pocket; the grip with its distinct recesses. “They ensure that one’s fingers do not cramp up”, says Achenbach. “That is why the LAMY safari is ideal for people who write a lot.”

The ink window, which allows the user to see how as is the shape of the body. This is not quite round, but rather flattened at the sides, so that it does not roll off the desk. The nib can easily be replaced and is available in different widths. This also makes the fountain pen particularly popular in Asia, as the fine nibs are suitable for intricate characters.

lamy safari zielony

The clip is the hallmark of the LAMY safari .

The model LAMY joy was specially developed for calligraphy: fitted with the same grip as the LAMY safari , but with a long, conically tapered shaft and three calligraphy nibs, which can also be easily replaced. And the material? ABS, a plastic which is known for its resilience and impact resistance in the case of the LAMY safari , and aluminium in the case of the LAMY AL-star , which can also withstand a great deal and is particularly light besides.

Thanks to this robustness, they can be taken anywhere – for example on a tour of the world, as in the case of illustrator Alicia Aradilla. She has been travelling around the world since 2017 and records the places she visits with ink and water colours. The Wat Pho Temple in Bangkok, the Water Palace Jal Mahal in India, the deep blue sea in the Philippines. Always at hand: her yellow LAMY safari ,

which she uses for her vibrant sketches. She lets her community participate in her colourful around-theworld journey in her Instagram account @a.aradilla.

Speaking of colour. It is to a large extent due to the wide selection of colours which makes the LAMY safari so popular – from red to blue and green through to pink. For many years the most popular colour design has been umbra, followed by white and black. There are also the metallic versions of the LAMY AL-star as well as Special Editions, which are awaited with excitement each year and which arouse a collector’s passion within many people. “We not only experiment with colour here, but also with combinations of finishes and materials”, says Achenbach. “We can all look forward to seeing what the next Special Editions hold in store.” Even a real chameleon would turn pale with jealousy if confronted with this spectrum.

Lamy Al-Star vs. Lamy Safari: Comprehensive Comparison [2024]

When someone is getting interested in fountain pens, there is one pen brand that is almost always suggested to them: Lamy. Founded in 1966, Lamy has been in the business of making high-quality writing instruments for quite a long time. Their Safari and AL-Star pens make excellent first pens, excellent gifts, and can become collectable as well as useful objects. They are affordable and durable pens that can last a lifetime when considering the lamy safari vs al star.

The Safari was originally envisioned as a school pen for users between 10 and 15 years old. Manufactured from sturdy plastics and fitted with easily swappable steel nibs, they can stand up to the needs of school-aged people as well as those of us who are well beyond that age.

In this piece, we’ll take a look at the Safari and the AL-Star versions of this pen as well as a couple of different versions of those pens in the Vista and LX.

lamy safari zielony

What the Safari and AL-Star Have In Common

On the grip section, you’ll notice two flat sides. Those flats are meant to help school-aged folk use a “tripod” grip, and they do give you a nice grip on the otherwise smooth section. This is great for those of us who have that traditional tripod grip, but it can be annoying to those who hold their pen in some other fashion. The flat sides won’t fit your non-traditional grip, and the edge of those triangles, while not sharp, could cause the pen to rotate out of position or feel uncomfortable.

The cap finial of the AL-Star and Safari fountain pens will also have an inset disk featuring an “X” shape. This helps differentiate between the fountain pens and the rollerball models which have a round disk with a hole in the center. There are some limited edition fountain pens that have the round disk, but not too many. This can help you to find the right pen if you’ve got them all in your pen cup together.

The Lamy Safari Fountain Pen

Features of the safari.

The Lamy Safari was introduced in 1980 to capture the market of 10-15 year olds. The resin barrel of the Safari is ergonomic and sturdy. It’s also very light, and it feels nimble in your hand. At a mere 7g uncapped, the Safari is a pen that you can use for really long writing sessions without any hand fatigue.

Benefits of the Safari

There are a couple of benefits that the Safari has over the AL-Star. First, it’s a little bit lighter than the AL-Star. The plastic of the barrel and section are rigid and they don’t feel cheap, but they still weigh less and that could be important to you if you have any sort of hand-issues that could make heavier pens problematic or tiring for you to write with.

The second benefit is that the plastic barrel of the Safari will hold up better to rough use. I don’t recommend being rough with any fountain pens, but the Safari is absolutely a pen that you can keep in a pocket or a bookbag without a sleeve or any other protection. It won’t dent or scratch easily, and that is especially important since the pen was originally aimed at the 10-15 year old market. There’s no need to baby this pen. That’s especially true of the models with a matte finish instead of the smooth finish.

There is also a variant of the Safari called the Vista. The Vista is a full demonstrator pen in transparent plastic. It has a bit more metal in the cap than the regular Safari, and so the cap is a little heavier, but it is otherwise identical.

One final benefit is that you can change the clips, finials, and trim rings on the Safari, but that isn’t possible with the AL-Star. Due to the way that the clip and the trim ring are attached to the Safari, you can swap these parts between different Safari models to make a custom color combination with the different painted clips and such. I’ve swapped the parts from the Mango and the Savannah Safari models to give an extra pop of contrasting color. Fun!

Drawbacks to the Safari

I think the main drawbacks of the Safari are related to the benefits. The light weight can cause some people to feel less sure about their grip on the pen, and that will make them grip it tightly so that it doesn’t get away from them. I’ve also noticed that a lightweight pen like this can affect my handwriting a bit. Some users will also equate the light-weight with low quality. These pens aren’t low quality at all, but that perception is out there and especially among new fountain pen users.

The materials of the pen can also look a bit “cheap” to some folks. The plastic finish will not appeal to folks who want the shine of a metal barrel. It can look like a “kid’s pen” to some, and that impression isn’t false. It was introduced to appeal to younger people. It just also happens to appeal to a wider range of people, too.

The Lamy AL-Star Fountain Pen

The AL-Star pen was developed after the Safari took off, and there are a couple of small design tweaks that you’ll see if you look closely. The barrel and cap are a slightly larger diameter than the Safari, but it’s only 1mm and not an obvious difference. This is due to there being a plastic barrel underneath the aluminum sheath.

The AL-Star and Safari are also different in length by about 1 mm. Some of this is due to the cap configuration, making the Safari’s cap just a bit longer. When they’re uncapped, though, the AL-Star is just a hair longer. These differences in girth and length are minor, and probably not something you’ll notice in your hand.

The sections of the two pens share the same dimensions, but they can’t be interchanged. If you compare them side-by-side, you’ll see that the trim ring of the Safari is part of the grip section, but the trim ring of the AL-Star is actually a part of the inner plastic barrel. Another subtle difference, but certainly worth noting for those who might want to swap the translucent AL-Star section onto their Safari or give their AL-Star the solid color plastic section of their Safari. That’s a no-go.

The AL-Star is also marginally heavier than the Safari. Comparing the AL-Star’s 10 grams (uncapped) to the Safari’s 7 grams (uncapped) you might feel the difference. It is a minor one, but some particularly perceptive folks may notice.

Some consumers will certainly prefer the sleek look of the AL-Star or the very slight weight increase that the aluminum sheath gives the pen. The 3 grams of extra weight is not particularly noticeable to me, but some will note it for sure.

lamy safari zielony

That same sleek look is also the drawback to the AL-Star. You’ll need to take better care of the shiny aluminum barrel than you would the more rugged plastic of the Safari. It is prone to picking up scratches, scuffs, and dings that the Safari would shrug off. On the other hand, perhaps you enjoy the marks that your use will add to the AL-Star over time. With a little care and a pen sleeve, though, your AL-Star will continue to look sleek and modern.

Some Final Details

Writing experience.

Whether you choose the Safari, Vista, or the AL-Star, you will get the same nib on the pens. Most of Lamy’s pens share the same stainless steel nib design, and this means that there are many different nibs that you can easily swap onto your pen. With point sizes ranging from EF to 1.9 mm as well as oblique styles and a left-handed nib, you can make the pen your own. Some styles also come with a black nib instead of the usual polished stainless steel. The Lamy LX series of the AL-Star model feature a black PVD coated nib that is particularly good looking, and the Aion and Ideos share a curvy version of the standard steel nib. The writing experience will be the same across these models.

The writing experience from these nibs is generally very good. The extra fine nibs are a little on the scratchy side, but that is typical of extra fine nibs, and nothing to be concerned about. The middle sizes of fine, medium, and broad, are all about what you would expect from a European nib of that size. Average and very controlled ink flow is typical, and they might feel a little too dry for some of the drier inks out there, but these pens are workhorses that will handle all sorts of papers and inks without issue.

The one thing I would advise is to skip shimmer inks with these Lamy models. The feed is really difficult to remove from the section, and I don’t advise it. That means it is difficult to give your pen a deep-clean to remove all of the shimmer particles, and that will annoy some users.

Feel in the Hand

Honestly, between the Safari and AL-Star, I don’t find the hand-feel to be very different at all. The very slight differences in weight, length, and girth aren’t very noticeable unless you’re comparing them directly and you’re really looking for the differences. Both are agile, light, and comfortable as long as you’re okay with the tripod grip that they demand.

Your big choice here is between metal finishes and plastic ones. I have never really picked a side in the Safari vs. AL-Star question because the look of the individual model is what will do it for me or not. One thing to definitely check out is the matte vs shiny plastic sections, though. Some of the Safari models will come in a matte finish, and I find that this gives a really good tactile feel to the section that the smooth plastic sections are missing. None of them are slippery in the hand (thanks to the triangular grip) but the matte finish does give some extra purchase that I appreciate.

lamy safari zielony

Special Editions

Last but not least, there are SO MANY special editions of these pens. Each year will bring at least one special edition color of the Safari and the AL-Star. Sometimes there will be more than one of each. Whether this is a positive or negative for you will depend on how you feel about collecting. I love that there are so many different options for these pens when discussing the lamy safari vs al star. Each looks different from the next and I can fit the color to my ink, outfit, or mood as I like. If I were a collector of the gotta-catch-them-all variety, I would find it daunting. There are decades of special pens out there to hunt down, and some of them cost a pretty penny on the secondary market.

FAQ: Answering your questions

How do you say “al-star”.

This is contentious! Some folks (Like my friend the Penaddict) spell it out. “A-EL Star.” I go with saying it as one would normally say “All Star.” It’s fun to pick sides, but at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter. As long as you call it the All Star, that is. (wink)

“Why is there blue ink in my new pen!?”

Does the lamy safari / al-star fountain pen come with a converter, will the lamy lz26/lz27 converter fit the safari / al-star fountain pen, how do the lamy safari nib sizes compare against other european and japanese nib styles, how do you replace the nib on the lamy safari / al-star.

How do the various nib sizes of the Lamy Safari / AL-Star compare?
