18 Best Things to do in Mahogany Bay, Isla Roatan

J. Souza

Going to Mahogany Bay on a cruise? This guide will tell you everything you need to know and everything you can do at the port and surrounding areas.

Mahogany Bay is owned by Carnival Corporation, and the stunning cruise port is located on Roatán Island in Honduras.

As it’s owned by Carnival, other cruise lines under the umbrella of the parent company will use the port on their itineraries, including Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Costa Cruises, and others.

With its sparkling white sand beaches and warm Caribbean waters, it’s easy to see why so many travelers love Mahogany Bay. For many, it is their favorite port of call, and we are going to see why with this guide.

This guide offers helpful information about what there is to do and see at the port and around Roatan. Visitors who come here can enjoy a variety of activities such as snorkeling and scuba diving, which will give them access to the area’s colorful marine life.

Other popular activities include kayaking through the mangroves or taking an island-hopping tour. Cruisers can also take advantage of the shopping opportunities available at Mahogany Bay’s bustling marketplaces. There they can find souvenirs and local hand-made crafts.

Note: Although the port is operated by Carnival it is recommended that you take your passports and photo IDs off the ship with you. Also you should bring some cash as you will not be able to charge purchases to your onboard account.

Mahogany Bay’s Cruise Ship Port

Mahogany Bay cruise port shops

Remember that not every cruise ship visiting Roatan will use the Mahogany Bay cruise port. Roatan, Honduras has two separate cruise ports , depending on which cruise line you’re sailing with: Port of Roatan and Mahogany Bay. The Coxen Hole cruise ship dock ( Port of Roatan ) is used by cruise ships from Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, MSC Cruises and others.

The Mahogany Bay cruise port that we are covering today is only used by ships owned by Carnival Corporation. These ships are from cruise lines that include Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, and Costa Cruises . The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center has two berths where two cruise ships can dock at once.

The piers and terminal can get busy and crowded at times with over 8,000 excited passengers ready to explore the welcome center and isle of Roatan. As you exit the pier you will be guided through a duty-free shop . The shop sells a variety of items including beach necessities such as water shoes and sunscreen as well as popular duty-free things. Prices are comparable to those on board the ship.

As you exit the store you will see the walkway leads to an open air plaza with lots of shops. This cruise center is where many of the excursions will meet. You can also book excursions here as well.

Where is Mahogany Bay?

where is mahogany bay

Mahogany Bay is located on the west end of the isla Roatan in the country of Honduras.  Nestled in the protected southern waters of Dixon Cove, the port offers over 20 acres for passengers to enjoy.

It is about 5 miles from the island’s capital, Coxen Hole, which is also where the other cruise port is situated. Roatan is one of three islands that are 31 miles off the coast of mainland Honduras, and it is the biggest and most populated of the three.

It is about 140 miles east of Belize. The island is part of the Western Caribbean Cruise itineraries and is one of the most popular destination ports for Caribbean cruises. From shopping, to eating out at local restaurants, to exploring nearby attractions such as Gumbalimba Park or Blue Harbor Tropical Arboretum – there’s something for everyone to enjoy! There are also plenty of beaches and water activities available for those looking for some fun in the sun.

How Big is Mahogany Bay?

Being only 5 miles wide at its widest point and 38 miles long, the Roatan island offers about 20,000 acres of beautiful nature to explore. Mahogany Bay is just a small part of the island and acts as the entryway into the gorgeous isle.

The cruise center covers about 20-acres of land and Mahogany beach takes up 10-acres of private land.

Note : The Mahogany Bay port is just the cruise port portion of the island of Roatan so there is much more to explore outside of the port. This article will focus mainly on the port of Mahogany Bay but will mention a few things outside of the area as well. You can check out our article on Roatan here.

Things to Do in Mahogany Bay

mahogany bay port tips

There is something for everyone visiting Mahogany Bay. Whether you want to relax on the beach in your beach chair or take part in some exciting shore excursions, there is always something happening.

You can take a dolphin cruise, go snorkeling along the coral reef, or even try out kayaking in the bay. For those looking for more of an adventure, you can dive into the depths of Gumbalimba reef with a scuba dive or sail off on a catamaran tour from West End.

One of the cool things about this port of call is that you can enjoy an amazing beach day without having to spend any money at all. That’s right! The first thing on our list is totally free. Or rather, it CAN be. If you wish to explore the outside area of the cruise port you will turn left and if you wish to visit the beach area turn right.

1. Mahogany Bay Beach

mahogany beach right near the cruise port, showing pier for snorkeling

Mahogany Bay Beach is for cruise passengers only, and it’s free to access. You will need to show your cruise card at the entrance. No transportation is needed to get to the beach as it’s right near the cruise port, although you can try the chair lift to make it easier (more on this later).

The sandy beach is about a 10-minute walk from the cruise terminal. There are tons of water sport activities available. These include snorkel masks and fins, paddle boards, Zayak, Fun Cat, Sea Hammock, Aqua Cycle, Aqua Cycle Boat, Paddle Boat, Hobie Kayak, kayaks, umbrellas, and more.

While the Mahogany Bay Beach is free for cruisers the equipment rental does have an extra cost.

There are plenty of lounge chairs that are free to use, however. You just need to get there early to ensure access to them. If two ships are in port it might be more difficult to find an open lounger if you get there too late.

Only a few lounge chairs are in the shade so those fill up fast. If you want to make sure you have some shade on your beach day you can rent a clam shell for $26 for the entire day.

Loungers and clam shells at Mahogany Beach

If you want to upgrade your day at the beach you can rent a cabana. Air-conditioned cabanas come with two lounge chairs, a hammock, beach accessories, a small TV, a safe to keep valuable safe, Wi-Fi, and waiter service in a semi-private beach area.

There’s also a refrigerator stocked with sodas and water. Fully air-conditioned beach cabanas come with two lounge chairs, a hammock, necessary beach items, free Wi-Fi and waiter service in a semi-secluded beach area.

The beach is over 800 feet long and offers some secluded lounger retreats, a dock for snorkeling, and a two-story gazebo that overlooks the pristine waters.

If you get hungry while hanging out at the beach there is an open-air restaurant right there. Fat Tuesday is also right outside the beach entrance and has an extensive menu with food and drinks. There are also 5 or 6 different places right in and around the main cruise center area.

There are restrooms and showers right there at the beach just near the restaurants, so you can rinse all the sand off before heading back to the ship.

2. Take the Nature Trail

Nature trail at Mahogany Bay

The nature trail in Mahogany Bay will take you to the free beach area. There is a more straightforward path to get there as well but the nature walk offers some interesting vegetation along the way, along with some good photo ops of your cruise ship.

As the trail winds through the wooded area it bends around towards the water with only slight elevation. Having to step over tree roots that could trip you up, be mindful there is some loose gravel along the path as well.

If you’re walking to or from Mahogany Beach you might as well try the nature trail during one of your walks just to spice things up a little.

3. Ride the Magic Flying Chairlift

Still, the views from the Magic Flying Chair are pretty spectacular, and after a long day playing water sports at the beach you might just want to sit down and take in the stunning views of Roatan on your way back to the dock at Mahogany Bay.

Note: The chairlift will not save you time as it moves rather slowly. Also, you will be above the tree canopy which provides great views of the ship and water, but that also means you will be in the sun a lot.

4. Enjoy a Zip Line Adventure

A zip line adventure is a great way to experience the Caribbean! On your cruise to Roatan, you’ll be able to book a zip line excursion at the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center. The cruise center is within walking distance of the port and beach, so it’s easy to get there from your cruise ship.

The excursion takes you across the island, giving you a unique aerial view of Roatan that you won’t get anywhere else. If you’re looking for an adrenaline-filled adventure while on your cruise, taking a zip line tour is definitely worth it. You’ll be able to see stunning views of the Caribbean and even make stops along the way for some fun in the sun.

You can book an zip line adventure both at Extreme Adventure Park and also Gumbalimba Park. Each will cost about $100 per person.

5. Snorkeling in and Around Mahogany Bay

Snorkeling at Mahogany Bay

There are some amazing reefs around the island of Roatan. And with over 100 miles of coastline you have plenty of options. But you don’t have to go far from the Mahogany Bay cruise port to find some great spots as well.

Though the beach is man-made there is some great beginner-friendly snorkeling locations right off the pier. The reef has some great coral and marine life that most casual snorkelers will enjoy. Here are some of the best snorkeling locations around the island:

  • Little French Cay

west bay beach, Roatan

For entrance into the beach area the cost is $27 for children and $35 for adults. Children 4 and under are free.

The drive from the cruise terminal to West Bay Beach is about 25 minutes long and will take you across mountainous jungles and incredible views. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing beach day or exciting water activities such as snorkeling, West Bay Beach won’t disappoint.

The bay offers stunning views of the Caribbean Sea and nearby islands, while the beach area has plenty of loungers and umbrellas to enjoy your day under the sun. The warm waters are also perfect for swimming and kayaking, making it an ideal destination for all ages. With so much to do and see at West Bay Beach, it’s easy to understand why it is one of Roatan’s most popular spots.

8. All-Inclusive Beach Club

roatan honduras cruise port shopping

You will have a server who will bring you drinks and lunch so you never even have to get out of your lounger.  There are also over the water cabanas that you can book. There is a place just for kids and swings in the water if you want to get that perfect Instagram shot from your vacation.

Excursions generally last about four hours at the beach club before heading back to the ship.

9. Visit the Monkey and Sloth Hangout

Located in French Cay, Daniel Johnson’s Monkey and Sloth Hangout is a family-run animal sanctuary. At the Hangout you will get to interact with the sloths and monkeys and learn all about these fascinating creators.

Then the tour will take you to an authentic Cayuco canoe where the guide will take you through the mangrove tunnel. With so much wildlife to see along the way this is definitely a tour for nature lovers.

12. Relax At Little French Key

Little French Key is a private island off the coast of Roatan, Honduras in the Caribbean Sea. It is best known for its picturesque beach and turquoise waters, ideal for snorkeling and kayaking. Visitors can take a Mahogany Bay Cruise from the Cruise Center to reach the island, which is also serviced by other day cruises.

Once at Little French Key, you can relax on the white sand beach or lounge on one of the many hammocks strewn around the property. There are several restaurants and bars that serve international cuisine and drinks for visitors to enjoy. Plus, there are plenty of activities such as swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and more.

Roatan Cruise Port

Booking Excursions through Cruise Line vs. Private Company

When visiting Roatan on a cruise, one of the important decisions you’ll need to make is how to plan your onshore excursions.

You have two primary options: booking excursions through the cruise line or opting for a private tour company. Each approach has its pros and cons, and the choice ultimately depends on your preferences and priorities.

Booking through the Cruise Line

  • Convenience : Cruise lines offer a seamless booking process. You can reserve excursions online or onboard the ship, making it hassle-free.
  • Reliability : Cruise line excursions are vetted and coordinated by the cruise company. You can trust that they will be well-organized and adhere to your ship’s schedule.
  • Safety : Cruise lines prioritize passenger safety and have established protocols for excursions. They typically work with reputable tour operators.
  • Guaranteed Return : If your cruise line excursion runs late and causes the ship to depart without you, the cruise line is responsible for getting you to the next port.
  • Variety : Cruise lines offer a range of excursions to suit different interests and activity levels.
  • Cost : Cruise line excursions can be more expensive than booking independently, as the cruise line adds a markup for convenience and coordination.
  • Crowds : Cruise line excursions may have larger groups, potentially reducing the personalized experience.
  • Limited Flexibility : Itineraries and schedules are fixed, leaving limited room for customization.

Roatan Cruise Port

Booking through a Private Tour Company

  • Cost Savings : Private tour companies often offer excursions at lower prices, allowing you to get more value for your money.
  • Personalized Experience : Smaller group sizes mean you can enjoy a more personalized and intimate experience.
  • Flexibility : Private tours can often be customized to your preferences, allowing you to explore Roatan at your own pace.
  • Local Knowledge : Local tour guides can provide insights into the island’s culture, history, and hidden gems.
  • Diverse Options : You can choose from a wide range of specialized tours that may not be available through the cruise line.
  • Coordination : You’ll need to coordinate transportation to and from the cruise port, which can be less convenient than cruise line excursions.
  • Safety : While many private tour companies are reputable, there is a degree of responsibility on your part to research and choose a reliable operator.
  • Time Management : Private tours may not adhere to your ship’s schedule as rigorously as cruise line excursions, so you need to be mindful of the departure time.
  • Risk : In the unlikely event of tour delays, the cruise ship may not wait for passengers on private excursions.

Tips for Choosing

To make an informed choice, consider the following tips when looking at Roatan cruise port:

  • Research : Read reviews, check ratings, and gather information about private tour companies to ensure they have a good reputation.
  • Budget : Determine your budget and compare the cost of cruise line excursions with private options.
  • Interests : Choose excursions that align with your interests and the type of experience you seek.
  • Group Size : Consider whether you prefer a larger group experience or a more intimate one.
  • Flexibility : If you value flexibility and customization, private tours may be the better option.
  • Safety : Regardless of your choice, prioritize safety by following the guidance of tour operators and respecting local rules.

Ultimately, both cruise line and private company excursions offer unique advantages.

Your decision should be based on what matters most to you—whether it’s convenience, cost, personalized experiences, or exploring Roatan cruise port’s hidden gems with a local touch.

If you’re taking a cruise to the western Caribbean, your itinerary might include a stop to the Honduran island of Roatán. There are two cruise ports there, one of them being the Carnival Corp.-owned Mahogany Bay.

Here, we’re going over everything you need to know about this beautiful cruise port, which includes shops, restaurants, a beach, and more.

What is Mahogany Bay?

The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is located on the southern side of Roatán, a 33-mile-long Honduran island located north of the mainland in the Caribbean Sea. The development, which opened in late 2009, is a joint venture between Carnival Corporation and local businessman Jerry Hynds.

Everything You Need to Know About Mahogany Bay Cruise Port in Roatan

The dock can accommodate two large cruise vessels, with the port area able to hold 8,000 people. There is no need for tendering at this port.

The project, which cost $62 million, encompasses 20 acres of waterfront property. Further, it includes a chair lift system (called the Magical Flying Chair) that takes visitors from the terminal building to Mahogany Beach.

The cruise port is likely named after Honduran mahogany trees. These are the most widespread species of mahogany and the only genuine mahogany species that’s grown commercially today.

Mahogany Bay is the second of two cruise ports on Roatán. The first is the Port of Roatán located west of Mahogany Bay in Coxen Hole. That port can accommodate three vessels at once — one docking alongside and two at anchorage.

The Coxen Hole cruise ship dock is where you will dock if cruising with Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, or MSC Cruises.

Getting to Mahogany Bay Cruise Port

Mahogany Bay is a private destination open only to cruise passengers. At the time of writing, only two cruise lines have sailings that include stops to Mahogany Bay: Carnival Cruise Line and Holland America Line. However, other Carnival Corporation brands (like Princess Cruises or Costa Cruises) can also call to the destination. Non-Carnival Corp. cruise lines may have agreements that allow them to stop at Mahogany Bay as well.

As the port is located in Honduras, the most common itinerary that includes Mahogany Bay are voyages to the western Caribbean. Some longer southern Caribbean voyages on Holland America also include a stop at Roatán.

Everything You Need to Know About Mahogany Bay Cruise Port in Roatan

Once you disembark your ship, walking off the dock will lead you straight into a large Dufry duty-free store. This area sells beach necessities and souvenirs as well as common duty-free goods like liquor and perfume. There is no option to avoid walking through the store. It’s part of the path that leads off the dock and out of the terminal area. The main shopping and dining area at Mahogany Bay is located just beyond the terminal and duty-free store.

Mahogany Bay Beach

If you want to head over to the port’s beach area, the easiest way to get there is via the chairlift. It costs $8 per child and $14 per adult for an all-day pass. Kids ages 3 and under ride for free, but keep in mind that there is a 32-inch minimum height requirement.

Those who want to skip the chairlift (and have some shade on their way over to the beach) can walk over from the shopping area in about 10 minutes. There’s a regular paved path, but you can also take the scenic route — a nature trail.

This trail takes you back into a wooded area and winds around the water. If you have mobility issues, we recommend either taking the chairlift or the paved path as the nature trail includes some slight elevation changes and has loose gravel. But if you want a nice trip through some flora on your way to the beach — and some great spots to take photos of your ship — consider choosing the nature trail.

There’s so much to do in the port area that you could spend your entire day ashore just enjoying what it has to offer. However, if you plan to go off exploring on your own or taking an excursion, there’s also a transportation spot with taxis and shuttles available.

What’s included at Mahogany Bay cruise port?

Visiting the 825-foot-long Mahogany Bay beach is a bit like having access to a beach club for the day. Hanging out on a lounge chair and splashing around in the surf are completely free for cruisers to enjoy. In addition to having complimentary access to the loungers, floating mats are free for guest use as well.

Additionally, the end of the beach area includes sand volleyball courts for visitors to enjoy. There’s also a basketball court and soccer field located behind the watersports rental area.

Clamshells and Cabanas

While many of the free loungers on the beach are in the shade, there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to snag a shaded one as they fill up quickly. To ensure that you’ll have plenty of shade during your beach day, you can rent a clamshell for around $30.

If you want to elevate your experience at Mahogany Bay beach, consider renting one of the beachfront cabanas. The air-conditioned cabanas can accommodate up to four guests and include the use of a semi-private beach area. Roatan Cruise Port: A Guide for Cruise Travelers (From a Caribbean Expert)

roatan honduras cruise port shopping

Roatan is a stunningly beautiful island in the Caribbean Sea, part of the Bay Islands of Honduras. It is a popular destination for cruise travelers who want to enjoy the tropical scenery, the pristine beaches, the rich marine life, and the diverse culture of this island paradise. You’ll learn all about the Roatan cruise port in this article!

I’m a travel agent, highly-experienced itinerary planner, Virgin Voyages aficionado, and Caribbean expert. I’ve been to the Caribbean countless times and have visited Roatan twice in 2023. When visiting, I completed two different itineraries, taking me all around this incredible island.

Roatan has two cruise ports: Coxen Hole and Mahogany Bay. Virgin Voyages docks at Coxen Hole. Depending on which cruise line you choose, you will dock at one of these ports and have access to different attractions and activities.

In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about the Roatan Cruise Ports, what to do while visiting Roatan, and what to know for your visit. Let’s dive in!

Quick Glance: Top Things to Do in Roatan:

  • Animal Encounters
  • West Bay Beach
  • Oak Ridge Tour

The Roatan Cruise Ports

There are two cruise ports in Roatan: Coxen Hole and Mahogany Bay . Coxen Hole (Port of Roatan) is a public port that is used by Virgin Voyages , Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, MSC Cruises, and other cruise lines. Mahogany Bay is a private port owned by Carnival Corporation and used by Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, and Holland America Line. Both ports are located on the south side of the island, about 15 miles apart.

Coxen Hole Roatan Cruise Port

Coxen Hole is the main town and capital of Roatan, and it is where the public cruise port is located. This is the port that Virgin Voyages utilizes . It is a bustling port that has a more authentic and local feel than Mahogany Bay. Coxen Hole has a smaller shopping area with local vendors, handicrafts, and souvenirs. It also has a tourist information center, a bank, and an ATM.

Coxen Hole is the gateway to the rest of the island, and it is where you can find more options for shore excursions, transportation, and tours. You can take a taxi, a bus, or a water taxi to explore other parts of Roatan, such as West Bay, West End, Sandy Bay, or French Harbour. It does not have a beach within walking distance, but there are many nearby beaches that you can visit, such as Tabyana Beach, West Bay Beach, or Half Moon Bay Beach.

Mahogany Bay Roatan Cruise Port

Mahogany Bay is a modern and well-designed port that offers a lot of amenities and facilities for cruise travelers. It has a large shopping complex with duty-free shops, souvenir stores, restaurants, bars, and a pharmacy. It also has a transportation hub where you can book shore excursions, rent a car, or take a taxi.

The highlight of Mahogany Bay is Mahogany Beach, a private beach that is exclusive for cruise passengers. You can access the beach by walking for about 5 minutes, or by taking the Magical Flying Beach Chair, a ski-lift-style ride that costs $14 per person for unlimited rides. The beach is clean and spacious, with plenty of lounge chairs, umbrellas, cabanas, and water sports equipment for rent. There is also a beach bar and grill, a volleyball court, and a water park for kids.

Is Roatan, Honduras Safe for Cruise Port Passengers?

One of the common questions that cruise travelers have is whether Honduras is safe for cruise ships. Honduras is a developing country that has a high level of poverty, crime, and violence. However, Roatan is a separate island that is relatively safer and more peaceful than the mainland.

The cruise ports are well-secured and patrolled by security guards and police officers. The cruise lines also work closely with the local authorities and tour operators to ensure the safety and comfort of their passengers. However, this does not mean that you should let your guard down or ignore the common-sense precautions.

I felt safe all throughout Roatan. The locals were friendly and eager to have us visit as travelers. I also met a handful of travelers and ex-pats along the journey.

Things to Do in Roatan Honduras Cruise Port

Enjoy the beach.

The main attraction of Roatan is the beach!. The island has over 40 miles of coastline, with white sand, turquoise water, and palm trees. You can find a beach for every taste and preference, from secluded and quiet to lively and fun. Many cruise port visitors will go to West Bay Beach. Tabyana Beach and French Key are also great options for a lovely, relaxing day.

West Bay Beach is one of the best beaches I’ve ever been to. I snorkeled along the shore and saw gorgeous colorful coral and fish. The water is very calm for swimming. And, the sand is a soft powdery white.

Along West Bay beach, there are several hotels and resorts, including the popular Infinity Bay Resort (pictured below). Infinity Bay Resort also boasts La Palapa, Beach Bar and Grill, a fun waterfront hangout with delicious seafood and flowing drinks.

Snorkel the Reef

Another major attraction of Roatan is the reef. The island is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef system in the world. The reef is home to thousands of species of fish, coral, and other marine life. It is also one of the best places in the world for snorkeling and diving, as the water is warm, clear, and calm.

You can find many spots and sites to explore the reef, from shallow and easy to deep and challenging. Some of the best spots and sites to explore the reef are West Bay Reef, Mahogany Bay Reef, and Mary’s Place which is a dive site on the south side of the island.

Experience the Culture

Roatan is not only a natural paradise, but also a cultural melting pot, with a variety of ethnic groups and languages. The island has a rich and diverse history and heritage, influenced by the indigenous, Spanish, British, African, and Caribbean cultures. You can experience the culture of Roatan by visiting some of the historical and cultural sites, such as the Roatan Museum which displays artifacts and exhibits related to the history, culture, and natural environment of the island, and Garifuna Village, the first Garifuna settlement in Central America.

Visit Roatan Chocolate Factory to see how the fresh chocolate is made on the island. While you’re there, scoop up some souveniers to take home!

You can also visit the Roatan Rum Company, which sells the most delicious rum cake! Some is packaged to easily take home from your travels, though you may have a tough time waiting to dig into it.

Encounter Wildlife

Roatan is not only a paradise for marine life, but also for land animals. The island has a diverse and abundant wildlife, with many species of animals, birds, reptiles, and insects. You can meet the wildlife of Roatan by visiting some of the animal sanctuaries and parks, such as Top Jungle, Daniel Johnson’s Monkey and Sloth Hangout, Arch’s Iguana and Marine Park, and Carambola Botanical Gardens and Trails.

Quick side note: Please do not touch or hold the sloths while visiting. This is considered animal cruelty, as sloths don’t like to be touched. Unfortunately, places that have branded themselves as sanctuaries are profiting over the exploitation of the sloths.

Tours from Roatan Cruise Port

Many travelers will take shore excursions hosted by their cruise lines, especially because of safety and assurance in getting back to the ship on time.

I recommend the following Shore Things for Virgin Voyages sailors:

  • For a fun day in the sun: Live, Lunch, Lounge French Key Beach
  • For those who just want to hit the beach: West Bay Beach Transfer
  • For the best of the island: Trifecta Tour with mangroves pictured below
  • For adrenaline: Zip Line Adventure

Other cruise lines, like MSC, offer similar excursions.

However, you’ll get to see more of the island if you hire a local guide. Please email me directly to arrange private group tours.

I’ve gone on two trips with a local guide:

  • Private highlights of Roatan (west side of the island) – lookout points, island tour, Roatan Chocolate Factory , West Bay Beach , Roatan Rum Company , animal encounter at Jungle Top
  • Private Oak Ridge tour (east side of the island) – the “Venice of Roatan”, tiki boat, mangroves (pictured above), Trico beach bar, Reef House bar & beach. This is best for those who have been to Roatan before and are seeking a different experience.

  • The time zone of Roatan is Central Standard Time (CST). The ship will likely stay on Ship Time, the time at home base – ET for cruises departing from Miami. Roatan does not observe daylight saving time (DST), so it is the same time as the US Central Time Zone in the winter, and one hour behind in the summer.

Can you walk to a beach from the cruise port in Roatan, Honduras?

It depends on which cruise port you dock at. If you dock at Coxen Hole (Virgin Voyages), you cannot walk to a beach from the port, but you can take a taxi, a bus, or a water taxi to one of the nearby beaches, such as West Bay Beach, Tabyana Beach,  or Half Moon Bay Beach. The ride takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the traffic and the destination, and costs about $10 to $20 per person, round trip.

At port, there will be many drivers aggressively trying to get you to drive with them. I would recommend taking a private tour but if you just want a ride, try to arrange with a reputable company in advance of your trip.

If you dock at Mahogany Bay, you can walk to Mahogany Beach, a private beach that is exclusive for cruise passengers. It takes about 5 minutes to walk to the beach, or you can take the Magical Flying Beach Chair.

According to the US Department of State, US citizens who travel to Honduras by cruise ship do not need a passport to enter or exit the country, as long as they have a government-issued photo ID and a cruise line ID. However, it is strongly recommended to have a valid passport in case of an emergency or a change of plans, such as missing the ship or needing to fly back home.

You can find a variety of items and products at the port, such as clothing, jewelry, art, coffee, chocolate, rum, cigars, and more. Additionally, there are a number of restaurants and bars within the port. Why not get some drinks and enjoy the atmosphere?

Mahogany Bay has a large and modern shopping complex with duty-free shops, souvenir stores, restaurants, bars, and a pharmacy. However, be aware that the prices and the quality may vary depending on the place and the seller. You should also be careful of counterfeit or fake goods, especially for brand-name or luxury items.

**CLICK HERE TO BOOK – Roatan Shore Excursions with the Roatan Collection!**

Roatan is visited by thousands of tourists from cruise ships throughout the year who stop for just one day on our beautiful island. If your cruise ship is stopping at the Town Center at Port of Roatan, here are some ideas to make the most of your one-day visit here.

Layout of the Town Center in Roatan

The Town Center at the Port of Roatan offers incredible convenience for cruise ship guests. As soon as you’ve disembarked, you’re in the middle of all the action!

The Port of Roatan can only accommodate one docked cruise ship at a time, so if your day in port coincides with another ship, you might be docked or you might need to tender to shore. Either way, as soon as you touch foot onto the pier you’ll see lots of shops and information available for shore excursions.

Organized shore excursions are picked up right at the bottom of the gangway. Some boat tours will pick up directly from the pier, while any other tours will head out to the parking area to board buses to their destinations.

The parking area also offers an approved taxi association offering set prices for various destinations around the island. Unless you request otherwise, when you arrange your taxi to take you somewhere, it is usually a round-trip deal and the taxi will wait to return you to the pier when you’re ready.

The whole Town Center at Port of Roatan is very flat and easy to walk around, so go ahead and leave the ship, walk around, and go explore the beautiful island of Roatan!

Shopping at Town Center at Port of Roatan

The Town Center offers many options for shopping immediately off your cruise ship. All of the shops and information kiosks are part of a single complex, making your day of shopping easy as you go from door-to-door.

You’ll find a duty free shop, multiple local shops offering specialized art and goods, as well as a few other chain names you might recognize.

Some popular Honduran gifts you might want to purchase include hand-rolled cigars, locally produced rum, locally made chocolate, Central American coffee, and a wide variety of incredible local art and jewelry.

You’ll also find a Roatan Marine Park shop to support the hard conservation work the community undertakes every single day for our diverse environment.

Things to Do at the Town Center in Roatan

The Town Center at Port of Roatan is small enough to enjoy in just a short visit. It is also conveniently located to reach a variety of destinations on the island very quickly.

You can walk to the main town of Coxen Hole from the port, although it is much more commercial than it is touristy. However, there are several local shops along the main road heading into town where you can purchase unique gifts.

There are several adventure activities available nearby, including Fort Consolation and several zipline canopy tours. West End and West Bay are both only about 20 minutes away by car, and multiple other activities are all within a 20-minute drive heading in nearly every direction.

Let us know what you love about the Town Center at Port of Roatan!

Ilustration of Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

Essential guide to Mahogany Bay and Coxen Hole cruise terminals in Roatán (Honduras): where cruise ships dock, all services, and amenities at the cruise terminals.

By: Editor-in-Chief Updated: May 30, 2023

Most cruisers do not realize that there are two distinct ports and terminals in Roatán. Frequent cruisers that have called at Roatán with the same cruise line may believe that the port where a specific cruise line docks is the only one in Roatán.

Where Ships Dock in Roatán

However, different cruise liens dock in two distinct ports. Carnival Corporation cruise ships dock at Mahogany Bay whilst ships from all other cruise lines dock at Port of Roatán Town Center (aka Coxen Hole).

Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

The largest of the two ports in Roatán is the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center , located on the southwest coast of the island and owned by Carnival corporation. Obviously, this is the docking port (and Terminal) for Carnival ships but also for Princess, Holland & America, and all other cruise lines belonging to this corporation.

The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center has two berths where two mega ships can dock. The piers and terminal can get busy and crowded at times with over 8,000 passengers and crew.

The Mahogany Bay Terminal

The two piers of Mahogany Bay share the same exit before entering a wide walkway that leads to a vast 20 acre welcome center/terminal. Once passed a couple of stores on both sides of the walkway, you will be on large square opening into the left.

Here you will find every single service and amenity the cruise traveler many need: Restrooms, ATM, Phones, the inevitable duty-free shops with the ubiquitous brands found in the Caribbean, Grills, Bars, Restaurants and a craft market. At the end of this elongated square, you will also find an information booth, car rentals, the shore excursions hub and a taxi stand.

To the right side of the exiting walkway, it is impossible to miss the Magical Flying Beach Chair. This chairlift service transports guests from the main plaza directly to white sand of Mahogany Beach - the all day pass costs $14 USD. If you prefer, there is a shaded path to Mahogany Beach which is around 15 minutes walk away.

Mahogany Beach

The top attraction of Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is the beach. In fact, this is more like a private island run by Carnival Corporation and, in a way, is just an extension of your cruise ship. This 10-acre area with its over 800-foot-long beach is dotted with water-sports, beach activities, beach bars and grills.

For those looking for a more secluded day at the beach, the Blue Lagoon has personal beach bed cabanas on a private beach.

If you are calling at Roatán on ships of cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, NCL, MSC, Oceania, Regent or Viking (among others) you will be docking at the Port of Roatán Town Center frequently referred to as Coxen Hole - the name of the largest city on the island of Roatán just a few minutes walk away. What's at the Coxen Hole Cruise Terminal

This port and Terminal is much smaller than Mahogany Bay, only has one pier perpendicular to the coast and the exit gates open directly into a nice but smaller plaza. But the terminal also has all basics services like Restrooms, Car Rental, Pharmacy, ATM, Internet, an Information Booth, and Taxi Stand.

Photo of Coxen Hole Cruise Terminal in Roatán (Honduras) Cruise Port

This terminal only has a few duty-free stores and gift shops. The shore excursion bus hub is on the right side of the terminal. On the left side, you will find the the taxi dispatch and the exist to the main street leading to Coxen Hole. Although within walking distance, there isn't much to see in this small town.

You'll be docked on the south side of Roatan at Coxen Hole, the largest city and capital of the Bay Islands.

Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and NCL ships dock at the Coxen Hole cruise ship dock and mall complex, opened in late 2008. Here you'll find a bank with an ATM, a large Diamonds International shop, a couple of restaurants and a smattering of other shops, including a pharmacy and a liquor store. (With the success of the initial development, the local authorities are now building a Phase II recreational complex adjacent to the current mall shops.)

Carnival, Princess, Costa, Holland America and Regent ships dock at the new Mahogany Bay Cruise Center , which is located in Dixon Cove east of Coxen Hole. This complex, which officially opened in February 2010, includes a Duty Free store, several jewelers (including a Diamonds International shop and a Tanzanite International shop), several restaurants and bars, snack bars, a pharmacy, and a number of souvenir and other tourist-related shops. The terminal is owned by Carnival Corp.

Adjacent to the Cruise Center is the white sand 10-acre Mahogany Beach, which can be reached on foot or via the " Magic Flying Beach Chair " (unlimited rides for $14/ day).

The port is quite sensitive to wind issues; often not able to enter port.

Sightseeing:

Roatan , this unspoiled island located almost 40 miles off the north coast of Honduras is part of the Bay Islands, which also include Guanaja and Utila. With a warm climate of around 80 degrees, you can lounge on the island's white sandy beaches or snorkel in crystal blue waters. You may spot some of the wildlife indigenous to the island, such as the Red Lored Parrot, the Lala Monkey or the Jesus Lizard, so named for its ability to "walk on water."

West Bay Beach is the best place to snorkel and sunbath at the same time. Snorkeling is very close to the shoreline and the fish are amazing. About $20 per person in a taxi.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Before entering a taxi, confirm the fare and whether it per person or per taxi . A water taxi from West End to West Bay Beach runs about $5. Most taxis accept both U.S. dollars and Lempiras.

On the outskirts of French harbor, a local islander has set up his own Iguana reserve. According to the owner, Arch, there are over 2,800 iguanas of four different species living on his property in French Key. Getting there is easy, take the road leading east from French harbor towards the Fantasy Island Hotel, you will see a clearly marked sign showing the detour towards the farm, follow the signs an you will arrive at the farm. Although there are really no facilities to speak of, you will marvel at the sight of these reptiles, which are quite docile, despite their prehistoric appearance. The entrance fee to the farm is $1.00 per person. There are good photo opportunities, as well as some souvenirs. Arch has this Iguana sanctuary out of his personal appreciation for the animals and your visit will help him continue his conservation efforts.

Where else can you become acquainted with monkeys and parrots in a natural setting, tour the history of the island, ride a zipline through the jungle canopy, explore the wildlife down under while breathing underwater, kayak the picturesque shoreline, eat at a poolside cafe, and just hang out in a hammock or lounge chair on the beach! From treetops to sea chests there are adventures that abound!

A new attraction in the area is the Jungle Canopy tour , located on the road towards Palmetto Bay Plantation. This outfit is open daily from 8:00 a.m. till 4:00 p.m except Sundays when open only till noon. Our Wander-Filled Life

Exploring the Cruise Port of Roatan, Honduras

Last Updated on February 20, 2024 by Grant

Located about 40 miles off the coast of Honduras, the island of Roatan is a growing port for western Caribbean cruises. This small island is popular for nature-based activities including zip lining through the lush canopy, ATV adventures and wildlife encounters. Additionally, the island lies along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second-largest reef in the world, making it a great location for snorkeling and diving.

Our first (and thus far, only) visit to Roatan was on a Western Caribbean cruise on the Norwegian Breakaway . We had heard many great things about the island and were eager to visit. Indeed, Roatan proved to be a wonderful cruise port and it is easy to see why it is gaining popularity.

Check out our full review of the Norwegian Breakaway .

It is important to note that there are actually two cruise ports, both on the south side of the island. Thankfully, both offer a wide range of shopping, dining and access to Roatan’s many different shore excursions and beaches.

(Disclaimer: When we link to places where you can buy our stuff or places we stayed, we are using special codes that earn us commissions on the sales at no additional cost to you. Please see our  Review Policy   for more information.)

Roatan Cruise Ports

We docked at the Port of Roatan at Coxen Hole. This port is used by Norwegian, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity. Right at the pier, you’ll find plenty of stores offering both local goods and the traditional duty-free shops found at many cruise ports. There are also many restaurants with outdoor seating to take advantage of Roatan’s fantastic weather.

As you disembark, just follow the signs to meet with your pre-arranged excursion. As usual, you’ll also find folks eager to sell you a last-minute tour or excursion.

Just outside the port area, you’ll find the small town of Coxen Hole. You can easily walk out of the port and follow the sidewalk to a few other shops, including a liquor store where we picked up a bottle of rum for some friends back home. There isn’t much touristy stuff outside the cruise port but if you want to walk a little on your own, you certainly can.

The Coxen Hole Roatan cruise port is starting work on what appears to be a significant expansion. Additions to the port area will include both a sea life and wildlife encounter, along with a lazy river, rum museum and more. I have no idea when this will be complete but it does look nice!

A second cruise port is located a little farther east at Mahogany Bay. This port is owned by Carnival, so is typically used by Carnival, Princess, Holland America and a few other cruise lines. We haven’t docked here, so I can’t say anything about it personally.  But, from what I’ve read it is a much more developed port area with a variety of things to do right there, including a free beach for cruise passengers only.

Shore Excursions in Roatan

Many of the shore excursions in Roatan offer the opportunity to be adventurous (zip line or ATV ride), view and interact with wildlife (monkeys and sloths, in particular) or relax on the beach. Of course, there are also water-based excursions including kayaking, sailing, and snorkeling.

Thankfully, there are also quite a few excursions that combine two or three of these popular activities.

Roatan ATV Eco-Jungle and Beach Adventure

In an effort to see and do as much as possible, we booked Norwegian’s ATV Eco-Jungle and Beach Adventure excursion. This particular excursion actually had three parts: ATV ride through the jungle, a stop at the Mayan Eden Eco Park and time on the beach at the Las Palmas resort.

The description of the excursion was a little vague, so we didn’t know exactly what to expect. It almost sounded like we would ride the ATVs to the beach. In reality, the three parts of the tour were completely separate. Still, we enjoyed the tour and really liked getting three different experiences in one day in Roatan.

One note about this tour: the “bus” that picked us up at the cruise port and took us around the island was very small. Honestly, it was barely bigger than a camper van, which seemed to be the standard in Roatan. We were all stuffed in like sardines. Thankfully, the bus rides were not very long. Still, that is something to consider if you are prone to motion sickness or just don’t like being in tight spaces.

ATV Jungle Tour

Our excursion started with the ATV adventure. Along the drive from the Roatan cruise port to the adventure park, our guide gave us a brief overview of the island and the people who live here. That is really important for us, in that we want to actually understand what life is like anywhere we visit.

Once there, we suited up with helmets and got a safety briefing. From there, we hopped on our single-rider ATVs and took off!

The group followed well-marked paths that were fairly easy to navigate on an ATV. There really were only a few places where we had tight turns or deep dips that took a bit of careful maneuvering. Additionally, we had a guide in the front and many employees along the trail making sure we followed the right path and were safe.

Perhaps the biggest downside was that we did do quite a bit of starting and stopping. And, the course wasn’t terribly long, so we crossed the same path a few times. Still, we definitely had an adventure and came away with quite a bit of mud on us! That’s always the sign of a good ATV ride.

In all, we spent about 30-40 minutes on the ATVs.

Note: Norwegian’s Buggy Eco-Adventure and Mayan Eden Nature Park is the same tour (we shared a bus the entire day). The only difference is two-passenger buggies rather than single-rider ATVs. We were happy we chose the ATVs but if you have children under 16, you’ll need to book the buggy excursion.

Mayan Eden Eco Park

From there, the bus took us to the Mayan Eden Eco Park. Here, a guide led us through the park to see various animals.

We walked through a butterfly house and saw toucans, macaws and several other animals that you don’t find in the US. It was really cool to see the tropical birds and to have an up-close encounter with the scarlet macaw.

The park is home to several free-roaming White Face Capuchin Monkeys, which seemed to have run of the place. They were fun to watch and if you wanted a picture with one, the guide was happy to bring out some treats to encourage one to hang out with you. Just watch your hat!

There were several other animals, including spider monkeys and the coatimundi, which looks kinda like a raccoon. We even saw a paca, which is a large rodent, rummaging through the jungle floor, not part of the exhibits.

The highlight was definitely getting to interact with the White Face Capuchin Monkeys and a three-toed sloth! We were not able to hold the sloth, like some photos show, because it was pregnant. Still, it was neat just to see one up close and personal. Everything it does really is in slow motion!

The walk through the nature park wasn’t terribly long or difficult but you do need to be able to navigate uneven terrain.

We spent about an hour at the nature park.

Beach Escape

From there, it was time to relax on the beach and soak up some sun! Our bus dropped us off at the Las Palmas Resort, where we had nearly two hours to enjoy the beach, get some lunch and sip on a couple of pineapple rum drinks.

Thankfully, we arrived early in the day and had our choice of lounge chairs. While we enjoy the beach, my fair skin can’t handle too much sun, so it was good that we found a couple of chairs in the shade!

First, we headed to the water to splash around and take a few pictures. Once we got in the water, it was great. But, right along the water’s edge, there were several very sharp rocks that were not easy on the feet. Still, the picturesque swing over the water was just about perfect!

After that, we headed to the beach-front restaurant for some lunch. We both opted for quesadillas (chicken for me, shrimp for Grant) and a local beer. The food was tasty but not anything super special. Still, enjoying lunch on the beach is not something we get to do often, so we really enjoyed it!

We ended our afternoon at the beach by partaking in the resort’s rum punch, served in a hollowed-out pineapple. Be sure to take advantage of getting a free refill!

Final Thoughts on the Roatan Cruise Port

After hearing many great things about Roatan, we were excited to finally visit. The Coxen Hole Port of Roatan is nice enough but definitely is a bit smaller than many other cruise ports, like Costa Maya or Cozumel . Still, you’ll generally find pretty much anything you need there. I am looking forward to the planned expansion and hope we get to enjoy that one day! I would also love to check out the Mahogany Bay cruise port sometime (I guess we’ll have to do another Princess cruise for that).

Roatan truly is a fantastic island and our only complaint is that one day wasn’t nearly long enough to truly enjoy it! There are a wide range of excursions available here, including both land and sea adventures or, of course, just relaxing on the beach. Regardless of what kind of experience you are looking for, you are sure to find something that you will enjoy.

Grant and I definitely enjoyed Roatan and all the lush vegetation. I could definitely see us coming back and staying for a week or so to do some more exploring and for Grant to do some snorkeling or SCUBA diving.

Travel Resources

What do you use to find a flight.

We use Skyscanner to find deals on flights. Skyscanner has a great interface and compares tons of airlines for the best pricing and routing. That said, it does not always have every airline and some airlines will have better deals on their website. Still, Skyscanner is a great place to start. Click here to search for a flight.

What do you use to find a hotel?

We typically stay at Hilton properties , so we use the Hilton website . You can find good Hilton Honors discounts or AAA discounts for a hotel there. We make great use of our free night certificates from our Hilton Honors American Express. Click here to book a Hilton property.

If there are no Hilton properties available, we use TripAdvisor to read reviews and book the hotel. We find we can get the best price that way. Click here to search for a hotel.

We recently partnered with Stay22 to add interactive maps to each of our destination posts. This will allow you to see a plethora of hotels and vacation rentals all in one responsive map of the area.

What if I need more space than I can get at a hotel?

We use Vrbo for the times when we have rented a cabin for a weekend getaway, like this cabin in Townsend, TN , or needed to rent a house for a large family vacation. We had a great experience with them in terms of refunding deposits when COVID hit and will continue to use them. Click here to search for a vacation rental.

Who do you use for rental cars?

As a general rule, we book with Hertz for rental cars. We have had nothing but good experiences with them. Plus, we really like unlimited mileage and not worrying about crossing state lines. We have even rented from Hertz overseas in both Slovenia and Croatia . Click here to book a rental car.

How about booking a cruise?

We have found some amazing prices for booking a cruise through Cruise Direct . We have saved a lot of money on our cruises compared to what we found elsewhere, making a last-minute Bahamas cruise even cheaper. Click here to book a cruise.

What if I want to rent an RV?

We highly recommend Outdoorsy for RV rentals. We rented a camper van for a week to visit Rocky Mountain National Park for the elk rut and Custer State Park for the Buffalo Round-Up and had a blast. The program was easy to use and we really enjoyed the freedom of having a camper van for that trip. Click here to rent an RV.

What do you use for booking tours?

We don’t often book tours. Typically, we like to do stuff on our own. That said, there are some experiences you can’t have any other way. So, when we do want to book a tour, we always check Viator first. Click here to book a tour.

Do you use anything to get discounts on the road?

We make extensive use of both Good Sam and AAA on the road. Good Sam is normally regarded as a discount card for RVers at campgrounds and Camping World but anyone can use the 5 cents off a gallon at the pump at both Pilot and Flying J. Click here to get a Good Sam membership. We have had AAA as long as we have been married and it has more than paid for itself in discounts at hotels, aside from the peace of mind of having roadside assistance. Add in paper maps and the ability to get an international driver’s license and it is more than worth it for any traveler out there. Click here to get a AAA membership.

Mahogany Bay Cruise Port: What You Need to Know

Mahogany Bay cruise port

Located on Isla Roatan off the coast of Honduras, Mahogany Bay is the country’s largest and most popular cruise ship port, accommodating up to two ships at a time and hosting upwards of a million annual guests who relax on its beautiful beaches and snorkel in crystal-clear waters.

Mahogany Bay location

Isla Roatan is part of the cruise industry’s recent initiative to own and operate its own Caribbean and Bahamian cruise facilities to provide guests with a high-quality experience ashore while having more control of the destination.

Isla Roatan is managed by Carnival Corporation, which invested $80 million to build the 20-acre Mahogany Bay Cruise Center, which opened in 2011.

One of the main attractions at the Mahogany Bay Cruise Port is an 800-foot-long private white-sand beach offering all that today’s guests are looking for in a tropical cruise vacation.

mahogany bay cruise port

Fun Fact: Christopher Columbus discovered this island’s region in the early 1500s during his fourth voyage.

This port guide will tell you what you should know when visiting Mahogany Bay.

Mahogany Bay Cruise Port Overview

Cruise Lines That Visit

Not all Western Caribbean cruises stop at Mahogany Bay as brands within the Carnival Corporation umbrella – Carnival, Holland America, and Princess – have preferential docking rights with occasional stops by Windstar and Marella Cruises. Other brands like Royal Caribbean , MSC, and Norwegian will call at Coxen Hole (also known as Roatan Village), located on another section of Isla Roatan.

Ships sailing from Miami, Tampa, Port Canaveral, Galveston, and New Orleans typically have itineraries that can reach Mahogany Bay on a seven-night or longer cruise.

Facilities and Amenities

Mahogany Bay Roatan

Considering Isla Roatan was a stand-alone facility built by a multi-billion-dollar company, the port has modern facilities with public restrooms, an ATM, a shopping center with many retail choices, restaurants, bars, and a beach club that is a short walk away.

WiFi and internet facilities are available for visitors who need to stay connected.

Bear in mind that getting around Isla Roatan involves quite a bit of walking, and there is an uphill grade when leaving the ship toward the port area. The incline could pose an issue for mobility-challenged cruisers coming to and from the ship.

Shopping and Dining

Mahogany Bay, shore excursion, beach

Shopping and dining are among the top highlights at Mahogany Bay. Numerous retail outlets are located near the pier with various stores, including duty-free shops, high-end jewelry stores, souvenir shops, and kiosks offering local handicrafts.

There is no shortage of port stores you’ve come to know and love, like Effy, Diamonds International, Del Sol, Cariloha, and others.

Shops and restaurants accept cash or credit cards. If you’re looking for a lively afternoon of fun, Fat Tuesdays on Monkey Hill always seems to have a crowd; for those needing a caffeine fix, there’s Espresso Americano Coffee Shop, popular with cruise passengers and crew (and quite good).

Transportation at Mahogany Bay

Mahogany Bay, cruise passengers, shore excursion

Although the port is somewhat walkable, several transportation options for cruise passengers are available at Mahogany Bay, from private taxis and shuttles to pre-arranged transportation provided by the ship’s shore excursion operators.

Taxis and Shuttle Services

Port area, Mahogany Bay

Taxis are available at the port for those who prefer to venture away from the port area. They are the most convenient and affordable way to get around the island, and drivers know the area. In my experience, the drivers know the area, so they’re a great resource for recommending things to see and do.

Pro tip: Make sure the driver accepts your preferred payment method and negotiates the fare before jumping in the cab.

Magical Flying Beach Chairs

Flying Beach Chairs Mahogany Bay

If you want to remain in the port area, check out the cruise port’s legendary Magical Flying Beach Chairs, a tropical ski lift that takes passengers from the port area to Mahogany Beach.

The chair lift offers stunning views of the surrounding area and is a fun and unique way to get around.

The Magical Flying Beach Chairs are a lot of fun and perfect if you’re looking for a quick and convenient way to travel from the cruise ship directly to the beach in just five minutes.

An all-day pass for adults costs $14, while passes for children aged 4 to 12 are $8. Children under three years ride for free.

(Note: The minimum height requirement is 32 inches, and a maximum weight limit of 600 lbs per chairlift. The cruise line sells tickets to the chairlift, or you can buy them at the ride entrance.)

Things to Do at Mahogany Bay

Mahogany Beach, shore excursion, cruise adventure

There are plenty of things to do on the island. Most guests head straight to Mahogany Beach, located on the port property and featuring beautiful white sand beaches and azure waters for sunning and relaxing. In contrast, others venture off on a cruise line-sponsored shore excursion or do their own thing.

The cruise line lists shore excursion options like dolphin swims, snorkeling, kayaking, eco-tours, ATV adventures, and horseback riding.

Mahogany Beach

Mahogany Beach, cruise port, cruise vacation

Mahogany Beach is just a short walk or ride from the port and was exclusively built for cruise passengers, meaning no one else is at the destination when you are

The man-made beach is similar to the Grand Turk Cruise Center, meaning it’s owned by the cruise line but run by locals.

There are two ways to get to Mahogany Beach: get your steps along the lush nature trail or enjoy a birds-eye view via the Magical Flying Beach Chairs, as mentioned (additional fee).

Isla Roatan, shore excursion, Mahogany Bay beach

Snorkeling gear is available for rent at the on-site dive shack, and exploring the colorful coral reefs and vibrant marine life surrounding the beach is a favorite activity. Scuba diving excursion is also available for those who want to channel their inner Jacques Cousteau, explore deeper waters, and see even more vibrant marine life.

There is a bar, shopping, a casual restaurant, public bathrooms, and changing facilities.

The beach has lounge chairs, umbrellas, and other amenities, making it a great place to relax and enjoy the sun and the sea.

mahogany beach cruise port

Cruise lines are a for-profit business – now more than ever – so the shoreline is dotted with cabanas available for rent, starting at $ 499 up to $1,299.

Other options include ziplines for thrill seekers or independent trips to the remote island of Little French Key, located about 15 minutes from the port.

Best Mahogany Bay Excursions

Little French Key Mahogany Bay

Here are some of our favorite excursions while visiting the island.

  • Zipline : Soar through the lush rainforest canopy on a zip line adventure.
  • West End : Explore the lively village of West End with a host of restaurants, bars, shops, and a beautiful beach with an assortment of local food.
  • Little French Key : Visit the secluded island of Little French Key for a day of relaxation on the beach or in the water. I’ve been here three times and loved it. (Note: this is a private tour not offered by the cruise line, so be mindful of your time so you don’t miss the ship!)
  • Gumbalimba Park : Here, passengers can learn about Roatan’s flora and fauna, visit the sloth sanctuary, and play with the monkeys. Watch out for the monkeys who love to dig in your pockets and take sunglasses!
  • Snorkeling and diving : Discover the amazing underwater world of Roatan with its coral reefs, tropical fish, and sea turtles. The ‘Catamaran sail and snorkel’ are just one of many options to get an up close and personal look at some amazing sea life.
  • Dolphin encounter : Anthony’s Key is the spot for interactive dolphin encounters and the requisite photo to prove you were there. Not surprisingly, these tours tend to sell out quickly, so make your reservations when you arrive on the island.

Roatan Cruise Port at Coxen Hole: Attractions, Beaches, Weather

The Roatan cruise port at Coxen Hole is small in size but growing in popularity with western Caribbean cruises. It is one of two ports on the island.

Coxen Hole is the capital of the Bay Island and the largest city with a population of about 5,000 people.

Cruise visitors will disembark at what locals call Port of Roatan , which has a small but attractive cruise terminal. The “Town Center” has retail shops, restaurants and of course the starting point for excursions around the island. The port can accommodate one ship at the docks. If any others arrive at the same time, they have to anchor offshore and “tender” their passengers onto the island (transfer them via small boats).

Roatan gets plenty of attention on travel and real estate cable channels in part because it is such an inviting island. It is inviting because of long white sand beaches and great snorkeling and diving spots. It also is a convenient cruise destination; cruises also often visit the nearby port of Belize City.

Besides Coxen Hole, the other cruise port on Roatan is Mahogany Bay . Anyone traveling with Carnival Cruise Lines and related brands will land there instead. It’s a Carnival-built complex on 20 acres to the west of Coxen Hole.

It opened in 2009 as part of a trend among cruise lines to build private, commerce-oriented docking facilities.

Quick Travel Tips

Where is coxen hole and roatan.

Coxen Hole on the southwest side of Roatan is only 137 miles southwest of Belize City , which makes it an easy island to reach in combination with the Belize port. Its small size makes the visit a quick one too because of the lack of major attractions other than the beaches.

Attractions and Shore Excursions

With a small population of about 5,000 people, Coxen Hole has few cultural or historical attractions. It also has a smaller number of restaurants and duty-free shops for visitors compared to larger ports in the Caribbean.

Roatan Marine Park is a protected area of western Roatan between West Bay and Sandy Bay. It has many of the most popular diving and snorkeling spots and also some of the most popular beaches.

Gumbalimba Park is an animal preserve with parrots, monkeys, iguanas and turkeys, among other creatures.

It also has botanical gardens, a beach for swimming and other recreational activities. Activities include kayaking, snuba and scuba diving, a zipline canopy tour and the Jolly Roger Sail.

Carambola Botanical Gardens and Trails is across the road from Anthony’s Key Resort on the north side of Roatan. It has 40 acres of land for hiking, wildlife viewing and scenic tours. Garden hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Roatan Institute of Marine Science at Anthony’s Key Resort is a marine research and educational facility. Visitors can swim, snorkel or dive with dolphins.

Because local residents eat iguanas, a resident created The Iguana Farm to protect and breed the dwindling population. The farm has several thousand iguanas on the property. The best time to see the iguanas is early afternoon at feeding time. The farm is in French Key, just past French Harbour, which is about seven miles northeast of the cruise port.

South Shore Canopy is a popular zipline facility with visitors. This shore excursion has prices starting at about $50. It is nine miles southwest of Coxen Hole and near West End.

Adventurous visitors can dive as much as 2,000 feet on the Idabel, which is called the world’s deepest passenger submarine, and view marine life through a Plexiglas bubble. The tour is chartered and can carry two passengers and a pilot at any one time. It is at the Roatan Institute of Deepsea Exploration.

The Butterfly Garden is a five-minute walk from the main entrance of West End Village. Other than butterflies, the garden has tropical plants and trees, many hummingbirds, and a small collection of parrots, macaws, and toucans that have been acquired as rescue birds.

Beaches Near the Cruise Port

Coxen hole cruise port map.

Anyone not interested in snorkeling or diving may want to spend the day at the island’s famous beaches .

West Bay Beach on the southwestern tip of the island is the most famous and most popular because of its extensive white sands, resorts, restaurants and other facilities. Most cruise excursions go to a section called Tabyana Beach.

It is about a 15-minute drive from Coxen Hole, so cruise visitors need a taxi, bus, rental car or excursion bus to get there.

A five-hour shore excursion to the Sandy Bay beach will cost about $40. It’s less than 20 minutes from the port.

West End Beach is the closest beach to the Coxen Hole cruise port. Water taxis connect West End Beach with West End Village, which has an active nightlife, for about $2.60 U.S. at the time of this writing. It also is about 10 minutes by car.

Half Moon Bay is another popular beach. It’s a 20-minute drive from the cruise port.

Shopping / Restaurants

Roatan does not receive as many western Caribbean cruise visitors as Grand Cayman or Cozumel. As a result, the shopping opportunities are more limited.

Coxen Hole has an open air market, shopping plaza and supermarkets. West Bay Beach has stalls featuring local artists and retailers.

Roatan has more than 100 restaurants. They are concentrated around Coxen Hole, Mahogany Bay, West End Village, West End Beach and other popular tourist areas.

Restaurants around Coxen Hole include Frenchy’s 44, Bojangles, Haydee’s Diner, Nardo’s Bar and Grill, and Wood’s Place.

Local cuisine includes baleadas, pastilles, conch and other seafood specialities. Other local favorites include Honduran coffee, fresh local fruit smoothies and local gelato flavours.

Getting Around / Transportation

Roatan is only about 2.5 miles wide at its widest point but 40 miles long. So adventurous people with plenty of time will want to take advantage of available transportation options.

Many of the car rental agencies are located at the airport. None are located at the docks at the time of this writing, but many of them do provide pickup at both docks.

Taxi rates are fairly low. The rate from Coxen Hole to West End is about $2.20 U.S., according to Tourism Roatan. The rate from Coxen Hole to West End Beach is about $7.10.

It is important to note that rates are not fixed by a government agency or taxi association, so ask for the rates before getting into the taxi. Taxis sitting right by the docks are more likely to charge higher rates.

Two bus routes originate in Coxen Hole and go to the various popular points on the island including West End Bay. They cost about $2.60 one way to West End and Sandy Bay for a 10-minute ride.

Weather / Best Times to Go

The official dry season in Roatan runs from April through late July with an average high temperature of 86 degrees Fahrenheit and 30 degrees Celsius.

A rainy season tends to hit the island from late July to early September The peak rainy season goes from mid-January to the end of February.

As a result, western Caribbean cruises that visit the island are often quite popular during the spring and early summer.

Roatán is one of my favorite places to visit. I can’t get enough of things to do. Use this list to help you plan out your perfect getaway while in Roatán Honduras when on a cruise.

Beaches To Go To In Roatán Honduras When On A Cruise

Beautiful beach with sand and blue sky and water with people enjoying in Roatan Honduras when on a cruise

Beaches are one of the best and most popular things to do when on a cruise. And going to the beach in Roatán is no different. To be honest, the beaches here and the water are perfect in my opinion. When I always think of what the Caribbean looks like, this is the place.

Check out these beaches to find a little paradise while in Roatán.

Mahogany Bay

When you get to the port, one of the biggest questions is, “Can you walk to the beach from the cruise port in Roatán?”

The simple answer is, Yes! Mahogany Bay is walkable and next to the cruise port. At this beach, you will be able to relax on the beach and use the lounge chairs at no cost. This is the best choice if you do not want to venture too far away from your cruise ship.

The best bet for walking to the beach from the cruise port.

West Bay Beach

You will find West Bay Beach to be about a 25-40-minute drive from the cruise port. This is my favorite beach while visiting and it is beautiful as you can see from the photo above.

Along the beach, you can find restaurants and bars to make your beach day a little more fun. Or look for more adventure and pay a little bit to go parasailing or paddle boarding.

Little French Key

The best is to visit their website and select a package that works best for you. Take part in adventures that include: the beach, an animal rescue center tour, kayaks and paddle boards, and so much more. Take a look at the options HERE . Packages start at $69 for a day trip.

Half Moon Bay

Lots of restaurants line the beach as well giving you many possibilities for options as you spend your day relaxing in the sun. This beach is not too big so it is possible that it could be filled with people when you visit. But it is completely worth visiting.

Visit An Animal Sanctuary

The Traveling Drifter holding a sloth

Roatán has some great animal sanctuaries. Have you ever wanted to hold a sloth or a monkey? There are a few places around the island that will let you visit to do this. Doing this is one of my favorite things to do.

Most sanctuaries will cost you between $10 – $35 per visit. However, you will have to pay for a taxi to get there and you will only spend about an hour at one of the places. I suggest checking out some of the tours below that group these sanctuaries together with other great adventures on Roatán.

It is great to get up and personal with some of these amazing animals and hold them. You will get to see some beautiful birds as well in these locations. But sloths…. Need I say more?

Fun Things To Do In The Water

With being an island, Roatán offers many things to do in and on the water. You will find a plethora of activities to do such as kayaking, paddle boarding, exploring on a glass-bottom boat, and so much more.

Catamaran and boat tours are a blast to take on the crystal clear water. But, Roatán is best viewed underwater. This island is a scuba diver’s or snorkeler’s dream.

Scuba Diving or Snorkeling

Roatán Island is an underwater paradise if you love to scuba dive or snorkel. The main reason for this is because of the Roatán Barrier Reef. This reef is a part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest reef in the world.

Because of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, this will give divers some of the best underwater views. You will see amazing coral life, schools of fish, and everything that makes the underwater world incredible.

Take advantage of the breathtaking Roatán Barrier Reef with these tours.

  • Roatan 3 Stop Snorkeling Adventure, Shipwreck, Starfish & Blue Channel – Enjoy a great snorkeling adventure with three different locations to explore. This tour provides snorkeling equipment and transportation.
  • Cruise Excursion – 2 Scuba Dives With Transport (For Certified Divers) – This amazing tour picks you up at your port and provides you with all your scuba gear. Explore the Mesoamerica Barrier Reef and wrecks. Enjoy all the sites under the surface.
  • Roatan Beach and Underwater Experience – Enjoy exploring the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef with Roatán Visitor Tours as they show you breathtaking underwater landscapes. Take in the sights of all the underwater life. They provide transportation and all your snorkel gear.

Catamaran Cruise

A great way to enjoy the beautiful water of Roatán is by taking a Catamaran Cruise tour. Sit back and enjoy the sun beating down while on the water, have some drinks, and jump in the water to cool down or to snorkel.

Enjoy this amazing tour as they pick you up from the cruise port to get your tour started. You will be taken out to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef to relax and enjoy everything on the Catamaran or jump in and explore the reef with snorkel gear provided to you.

Get on this tour now to enjoy this amazing Catamaran Cruise on the water.

Other Things To Do On The Water In Roatán Honduras When On A Cruise

If you are not into snorkeling or scuba diving, there are still some great things to do on the water while visiting Roatán.

If you are into kayaking, there are some great options to pick from to explore the water.

Here are some great options to do on the water.

  • Hydrobikes & Snorkeling With Private Island At Your Leisure – Take a trip out to a private area of French Cay and explore the area on Hydrobikes. This is a laid-back trip where you can lay out on the beach, snorkel, or ride hydrobikes at your own pace. They will pick you up and get back to your ship 2 hours before it leaves port.
  • Roatan Shore Excursion: Kayak Harbor Adventure and Reef Snorkel – Enjoy this amazing kayak tour as you are taken out to French Cay to explore the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Shopping And Eating When In Roatán Honduras

There are some great options when you are looking for a little retail therapy when visiting Roatán. There are plenty of places to visit to bring home the perfect gift for yourself your someone else.

Roatán Island also offers plenty of great options for delicious food and quenching drinks. Enjoy a little bit of island paradise while you indulge in the flavors of Roatán Honduras.

Sometimes I get a real feel for a place when I am immersed with locals in the markets or while I am tasting and drinking local flavors that make each place unique. You can always get a closeness of a place with their food and drink in my opinion.

When it comes to shopping in Roatán, you will be able to find plenty of small shops all around the tourist areas. You will find that most of the shops are based around jewelry, knick-knacks, and other souvenir items.

Look for the best shops in Coxen Hole and West End. A great spot is French Harbor which hosts the Mega Plaza Mall. This is the spot to hit if you are in search of some real retail therapy.

If you don’t feel like venturing out too far from the ship, you will be able to find plenty of shops at Mohagany Bay or the Port Of Roatán.

Food And Drink

If you are looking to indulge in some great local seafood and sit back with a drink, Roatán has some great options for you. I recommend heading out to West End or West Bay Beach to find something that is perfect for you.

I personally love to find small restaurants or bars on West Bay Beach. It just feels great to sit at an outside location with the water about 100 feet from you taking it all in.

There are so many options from local cuisine to international food to choose from while you are searching. Explore the areas and find what looks good for you on that day. When it comes to food on Roatán, I like to let my eyes and nose choose what to eat by seeing and smelling what looks great at the moment.

Other Things To Do In Roatán Honduras When On A Cruise

There is a great spot just off West Bay Beach called Gumbalimba Park. This park is set on 20 acres of land with beachfront access. You will see free-roaming macaws, white-faced monkeys, and iguanas.

Gumbalimba Park has a pool, museum, botanical gardens, and an animal interaction center. Look to be able to do many adventure activities as well like horseback riding and zip lining. This is a great all-in-one place to go, especially if you are visiting as a family.

Is Roatán Walkable?

Large turtle on top of a building with balconies

Roatán Island is about 48 miles long with lush forest throughout it and the popular areas are spread throughout the island. Is Roatán walkable? The easy answer is no but with a yes.

The “no” part of the answer. To get to places like West Bay Beach or West End you will need to take a taxi. You will find that taxis usually run around $20 for one passenger and an additional $10 for each other passenger. Of course, this can fluctuate at any time.

But, once you arrive in the area you are going to, then the answer is “yes”. You will be able to walk around the areas with ease.

Another “yes” part is that there are plenty of things to see and do around Mohagany Bay (for Carnival ships) and the Port of Roatán (other cruise ships). There is a beach that is about a 10-minute walk from the cruise ports and lots of options for food and shopping within the area too.

The best way to do it though, is to sign up with a tour that will get you to where you are going. They usually pick up at or near the cruise port and will return you. It is a great way to take the worry out of your mind and enjoy your time in Roatán.

Is Roatán Safe?

I do get asked a lot if Roatán is safe. Personally, I have felt safe there. If you stay in the tourist areas with all the other cruisegoers, you will feel safe as well. Of course, like every city, there are areas that are less safe than others.

I recommend staying in groups and not trying to venture out by yourself unless you are in a high-tourist traffic area. Be vigilant and aware of your surroundings.

Again, I have felt safe when visiting Roatán Island in the past. Also, if you take tours, the companies are built on reviews and will not want to put any guest in harm’s way.

Is Roatán Honduras Worth Visiting?

Large blue chair that says, "I love Roatan" on it with trees behind it in Roatan Honduras when on a cruise

So, is Roatán Honduras worth visiting? In my opinion, absolutely yes! Roatán is one of my favorite places in The Caribbean.

As you can see from the information I have provided, there are many things to see and do while visiting Roatán Honduras on a cruise.

In fact, with so many options to do in Roatán, I recommend visiting the island as many times as possible to try everything.

And as highlighted above, if you are a scuba diver or snorkeler, Roatán Island is a diver’s dream location. It has the second largest barrier reef in the world, The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Just seeing that alone is worth coming to Roatán Honduras.

I will say this to answer the question, I can’t wait to go back!

Things Ton Do In Roatán Honduras When On A Cruise: In Conclusion

In conclusion, Roatán Island in Honduras is a true paradise for scuba divers and snorkelers. The breathtaking beaches, teeming with colorful marine life, offer an unforgettable experience. But Roatán offers more than just underwater wonders for those looking for great things to do in Roatán Honduras when on a cruise.

Whether you’re seeking thrilling adventures or simply looking to relax on pristine beaches, Roatán has it all. From zip-lining through the lush rainforest to seeing monkeys and sloths, there is an endless array of activities to suit every traveler’s interests.

Currency/Credit Card/ATM

Most U.S. Cruisers will be happy to know that U.S. Dollars are widely used on Roatan. There are several ATM machines to withdraw funds at the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center. However, it is best to use your credit cards for purchases, unless you run across a vendor outside the port where you will be required to pay in U.S. Dollars or Lempira, the currency of Honduras. Change from a transaction will probably be in U.S. Dollars at this port of call and cash advances, including travelers checks, are available at several of the banks on the island. IMPORTANT ! Remember to notify your bank/credit card company before leaving your place of origin.

Internet & Wifi Access

As technology advances, more wireless carriers from North America and Europe provide cellular phone coverage for tourists in Central America. Most traveler related businesses on Roatan provide internet access complimentary or with a purchase of some sort. There are also several internet cafes along the Main Street in Coxen Hole, but I would look for internet access near your place of interest. For example, JavaVine Cafe & Wine Bar is a good choice in West Bay and Sundowners Bar in West End. Local mobile cellular providers for the island and Honduras are Claro and Tigo, with Tigo Cellular having a better signal throughout the island.
