The following requirements must be submitted to the Registrar's Office before admission to any academic program:

College Freshmen

  • Original Form 138 / SF9-SHS (Learner's Progress Report Card)
  • Original Form 137 / SF10-SHS (Learner's Permanent Academic Record)
  • PSA-issued Birth Certificate

College Transferees

  • Certificate of Transfer (Honorable Dismissal)
  • Official Transcript of Records

Foreign Students with Scholastic Records from a Foreign School

  • Five (5) copies of the Student’s Personal History Statement (PHS) containing, among others, his/her left and right thumb-prints and a 2” x 2” photograph on plain white background taken not more than six months prior to submission
  • Transcript of Records/Scholastic Records duly authenticated by the Philippine Foreign Service Post (PFSP) located in the student-applicant’s country of origin or legal residence
  • Notarized Affidavit of Support including bank statements or notarized grant for institutional scholars
  • Photocopy of the student’s passport showing date and place of birth and birth certificate or its equivalent duly authenticated by the PFSP

Student Visa and Special Study Permit (SSP) from the Bureau of Immigration shall not be required of the spouses and unmarried dependent children below 21 years old of aliens under the following categories:

  • Permanent foreign residents
  • Aliens with valid working permits under Section 9(d), 9(g) and 47(a) (2) of the Philippine Immigration Act of 1940, as amended
  • Personnel of foreign diplomatic and consular missions residing in the Philippines and their dependents
  • Personnel of duly accredited international organizations residing in the Philippines and their dependents
  • Holders of Special Investor’s Resident Visa (SIRV) and Special Retiree’s Resident Visa (SRRV)
  • Foreign students coming to the Philippines with 47(a)(2) visas issued pursuant to existing laws, e.g. PD 2021

  • Sports, Events, and Entertainment Management Minor : Delivery highly-effective experiences in the world of sports, events, and entertainment, and engage in careers as an sports/event venue sales manager; event manager for a hotel, sports venue, convention center, wedding venue, etc.; meeting planner for corporations, associations, or non-for-profit organizations; sports marketing manager; sports arena/facilities manager; private sports club manager; or sports analyst.

Additionally, our curriculum prepares you for the challenges of operating in a global industry by developing your knowledge of cross-cultural customer interactions, languages, and business practices of multinational corporations.

Global Hospitality Rotation

The  global hospitality rotation  is an immersive experience where you will gain a global perspective in business and commerce by studying international business on two continents:

  • RIT Croatia: You’ll spend the spring semester of your second year at  RIT Croatia , studying in Dubrovnik. Known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” Dubrovnik is a medieval seaside port on the Adriatic Sea. It is a popular European cruise ship port that boasts many cafes, winding cobblestone streets, and old city neighborhoods. It also served as a main filming location for HBO's hit drama Game of Thrones .
  • RIT: The majority of your course work will occur on RIT’s main campus in Rochester, N.Y. From its world-renowned attractions and historic museums to its phenomenal dining, world-class golf courses, and internationally recognized festivals, Rochester is a major metro city and a four-season adventure destination. 

Study Abroad Opportunities

The BS in hospitality and tourism management is also offered at RIT Croatia , one of RIT’s global campuses . Located in Dubrovnik, Croatia, RIT Croatia is in the center of one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean Sea. What’s different about an RIT education? It’s the career experience you gain by completing  cooperative education and internships  with top companies in every single industry. You’ll earn more than a degree. You’ll gain real-world career experience that sets you apart. It’s exposure–early and often–to a variety of professional work environments, career paths, and industries. 

Co-ops take your knowledge and turn it into know-how. Business co-ops  provide hands-on experience that enables you to apply your knowledge of business, management, finance, accounting, and related fields in professional settings. You'll make valuable connections between course work and real-world applications as you build a network of professional contacts.

Students in the hospitality management degree are required to complete a combined 1,200 hours of practical cooperative education experience with classroom theory. In co-op placements, students work directly in the hospitality industry in a variety of positions and organizations. Co-op is usually completed in the summer following the freshman and sophomore years and during any semester in the junior and senior years, except the final semester of the senior year, when students are required to be in residence on campus. Co-op is planned, monitored, and evaluated by the student, the co-op counselor, the faculty adviser, and the employing firm.

Program Overview

To be sustainable, travel experiences must balance natural resource consumption with environmental protection, economic growth with destination resilience, and tourists’ experiences with local needs. Regenerative tourism can be a tool that promotes sustainable resource use while meeting local needs and visions for the future, creating a net positive benefit to the destination.

Destination developers seeking to use regenerative tourism as a tool must be familiar with tourism planning, project and people management, sustainable natural resource principles, visitor use trends, leadership, communication, and more. Learners in Tourism Destination Management will engage with content from the fields of business, economics, sustainability, development, and tourism and hospitality.

They will develop skills in data-driven decision-making, and project planning, design, management, and evaluation. Learners will explore how the tourism and hospitality industry is entangled within other industries (e.g., food systems, transportation), cultivate a set of best practices and project management skills useful for planning, evaluate current and future visitor trends to inform decision-making, understand the impacts of climate change to tourism (and tourism to climate change), and learn to balance local development, sustainable resource use, and economic security using regenerative principles.

The Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management degree is designed to prepare students for managerial and leadership roles in the tourism industry, including convention centers, tourism events, festivals, conferences, destination management organizations, and the travel industry. The mission of the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management is to educate global leaders for the hospitality and tourism industry through innovative and experiential curriculum, research, and community engagement.

The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management prepares students for responsible citizenship roles in business and society. It enables them to understand and apply the concepts of problem-solving in general, and in organizational and industry-related issues.

The faculty provide uncompromising individualized attention to meeting the educational needs of our students and assume very active, and influential roles in numerous professional organizations, at all levels.

Learning Outcomes

Students in the Tourism Management, B.S. program will be able to:

  • Identify and apply the knowledge and skills necessary for tourism operations.
  • Develop and integrate a core set of business skills necessary to successfully operate a tourism organization.
  • Demonstrate competence in the communication skills necessary for tourism management.

Entrance Requirements

The College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management has a pre-professional and a professional division of student classification. All new students will begin in the pre-professional division. Progression into the professional division requires the approval of the department and the successful completion of the requirements indicated under each departmental heading.

In addition to the academic admission requirements of the University and of the College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management for admission to the pre-professional division, an enrollment limit into the professional division may be imposed by various departments. Such a limit would become necessary if enrollment levels exceed available department staffing and facility resources. In the event of an enrollment limit, admission to a department may take into account the applicant’s grade point average and other factors which may include the applicant’s potential for success in that major.

Freshmen Students

In order to be admitted to a program of study in the College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management, freshmen applicants must meet all University admission requirements through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Transfer Students

In order to be admitted to a program of study in the College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management, transfer applicants from outside of the USC system must meet all University admission requirements through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and have at least a 2.50 GPA.

Students from other USC campuses who wish to enter the College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management must fulfill one of the following requirements:

  • Be in good standing, meet all University admission requirements through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, and have the cumulative GPA required for the program (see below).
  • Be in good standing and have completed 30 semester hours with the cumulative GPA required for the program (see below).

Required GPA for Change of Campus:  tourism management - 2.50; hospitality management - 2.50

Students enrolled in other colleges on the Columbia campus  must meet the following GPA requirements on all work taken: tourism management - 2.50; hospitality management - 2.50

Degree Requirements (120 hours)

Program of Study

Founding documents requirement.

All undergraduate students must take a 3-credit course or its equivalent with a passing grade in the subject areas of History, Political Science, or African American Studies that covers the founding documents including the United State Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the Emancipation Proclamation and one or more documents that are foundational to the African American Freedom struggle, and a minimum of five essays from the Federalist papers.  This course may count as a requirement in any part of the program of study including the Carolina Core, the major, minor or cognate, or as a general elective.  Courses that meet this requirement are listed here .

GFL – Global Citizenship and Multicultural Understanding: Foreign Language  (0-6 hours)

College of HRSM students must demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language by achieving a score of 2 or higher on the foreign language placement test or by completing one foreign language course through 110 or 121.

Carolina Core Stand Alone or Overlay Eligible Requirements  — Overlay-approved courses offer students the option of meeting two Carolina Core components in a single course. A maximum of two overlays is allowed. The total Carolina Core credit hours must add up to a minimum of 31 hours. Some programs may have a higher number of minimum Carolina Core hours due to specified requirements.

A minimum grade of C is required in all college required courses

3. Program Requirements (8-20 hours)

Supporting courses (6 hours), minor (0-18 hours) optional.

  • Tourism Management majors may pursue a minor in any course of study offered by the College of HRSM as well as any other University program with an approved minor. College of HRSM required courses may not be counted toward a minor.

Electives (2-14 hours)

  • The Tourism Major Curriculum includes 2 to 14 hours of approved electives depending on how students fulfill the Carolina Core Requirements. Any course in the university can be used to satisfy the elective requirement including additional electives in the major.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT  is a four-year degree program related to the fields of hospitality and tourism education. It provides students the opportunity to become directly involved in managing and planning the world’s biggest people industry – tourism.  This concentrates on courses such as history, travel, language, and other cultural aspects. The BS Tourism Management program has two areas of specialization: (1) Major in Travel Operations and Service Management, and (2) Major in Recreation and Leisure Management.

The BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT Major in Travel Operations and Service Management program covers the study of various components focusing on the management, operations, and service delivery relevant to the travel and tourism industry. Program cost breakdown

In most cases, Strayer’s BBA program consists of 40 courses, with the price of $1525 per course. There are additional fees for textbooks and supplies, a $65 technology fee each term and a one-time $150 degree conferral fee.

Transfer credits

Courses from another institution may be eligible for transfer credits to Strayer, which can help reduce the number of courses you need to graduate and your overall tuition. You can transfer up to four classes toward your bachelor’s degree (if approved). The Strayer transfer credit page  has more information, as well as a tool to estimate how many transfer credits you may be able to apply to your Strayer degree program.

Scholarships and financial aid

There are a number of financial aid options worth exploring on our financial aid page. To apply for federal aid, prospective students should fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Stafford loans are available for graduate study. These are direct unsubsidized loans, not based on financial need. Unlike subsidized loans, Stafford loan interest will accrue while in the program. Making interest payments while in school will help reduce the amount of principal that would otherwise build up, reducing your end cost.

There are also scholarships and private loans available for Strayer students.

Review the development and operation of food service facilities of varying operational segments. Focus on concept development, menu management, human resource management, legal issues in the industry, managerial accounting management of internal operations and marketing initiatives. Alumni from our HRTM program have come together to establish this scholarship, honoring the legacy of Professor Philip H. McGuirk. If you're just starting out here as a freshman or a new student in the HRTM program, know that this award is specifically designed for you. It's an opportunity to propel you on your journey in hospitality leadership.     

The HRTM Alumni Scholarship for New Students is a $1,000 one-year, non-renewable scholarship.  Thirty scholarship awards are available for new entering students pursuing a major in Hotel, Restaurant & Tourism Management. No additional scholarship application is required, you will be automatically eligible if you meet these criteria:

  • Incoming first-year OR Transfer student, transferring from an accredited college
  • Enrolled as a full-time, degree-seeking student for fall semester in the Hotel, Restaurant & Tourism Management program
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher from the most recent school attended
  • Both on-campus and online/customized instruction students are eligible

For high school students considering our program, UW-Stout has established new articulation agreements with ProStart High School. These agreements offer a unique opportunity for current high school students, allowing them to earn "free" 12 credits in the HRTM program. This means you can get a head start on your hospitality management journey even before setting foot on our campus.

There are numerous scholarships available for students majoring in Hotel, Restaurant & Tourism Management. Eligibility requirements vary, but awards are available regardless of financial need. For consideration, you must submit a Stout University Foundation Scholarship application - with a single application, you'll be considered for every Foundation scholarship for which you qualify.

The club focuses on the private club industry and understanding the unique aspects and opportunities of this distinctive component of the hospitality industry. The goals of the student CMAA chapter is to help members become comfortable interacting with their peers and industry professionals, work on building members' resume and national network of contacts, provide professional development, identify internship opportunities around the country at some of the most prestigious clubs in America, obtain scholarships for their studies and for immersive leaving opportunities like the annual world conference, and traveling around the country to help students prepare for their career. HSMAI Overview Hospitality, Sales, and Marketing Association International (HSMAI), is committed to growing business for hotels and their partners and is the industry’s leading advocate for intelligent, sustainable hotel revenue growth. The association provides marketing, sales and revenue optimization professionals with tools, insights, and expertise to fuel sales, inspire marketing, and optimize revenue. The student chapter tours hospitality properties, conducts sales blitzes, as well as participates in events with our state and global HSMAI chapter, along with fundraising to attend the national Adrian Awards event.

What is bachelor of science in tourism.

The Bachelor of Science in Tourism (BS Tourism) is a 4-year multidisciplinary degree that trains students in becoming leaders, managers, entrepreneurs, and qualified personnel in the tourism industry. It focuses on cultural aspects such as travel, language, and history. Another closely related program BS Tourism Management , on the other hand, concentrates more on business consciousness, entrepreneurship, and hospitality.

There is no required board examination for BS Tourism, though graduates are required to take and pass the Civil Service Examination for government-related jobs.

Strands in Accountancy, Business, and Management under the Academic track as well as Home Economics strands under the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood track are possible avenues that you can take in case you want to venture into the tourism field.

Program Description

The program prepares students for supervisory and administrative positions with park systems, environmental centers, commercial recreation and tourism agencies, golf courses, hospitals and assisted living facilities, private voluntary agencies, schools and colleges, and other commercial, nonprofit, and public organizations that provide recreation and leisure services. The program combines a broad educational foundation with specific courses designed to accommodate career interests in recreation, park, and tourism management. The program helps students gain the theoretical, managerial, technical, and experiential skills they need to become the next generation of leaders in the field. Additionally, students obtain real-world experience through our internship experiences.

Four (4) options are offered:

Commercial Recreation and Tourism Management Option

Available at the following campuses: Abington, Greater Allegheny, University Park, World Campus

This option focuses on management in the private/commercial, non-profit, and public sectors of recreation/leisure services. The private/commercial focus will be of interest to students seeking careers in a variety of commercial settings such as resorts; theme parks, convention centers; sports and fitness facilities, including arenas and stadiums; tourism promotion/planning agencies; and employee recreation departments within corporations. This focus will also appeal to students wishing to become entrepreneurs.

Community Recreation Management Option

For those interested in the community, public, or non-profit sectors for positions within municipal, state, and federal government agencies; recreation divisions of the armed services; YMCA agencies; United Way agencies; scouting organizations; university-affiliated units such as student unions, intramural and alumni services; and other non-profit organizations.

Professional Golf Management Option

Available at the following campuses: University Park

Accredited by the Professional Golfers' Association of America, the Professional Golf Management Option prepares students for careers in the golf industry. Students will be prepared to assess leadership and management principles including customer service, interpersonal skills, business communication, conflict resolution, time management, negotiating, project management, marketing, and community relations. In addition to the core curriculum, the program has a strong business focus and is drawn from several nationally recognized academic disciplines on campus.

Outdoor Recreation Management Option

This option prepare students for careers in Park Management and Environmental Interpretation (PMEI), Adventure Recreation, or in both fields. The Adventure Recreation pathway emphasizes outdoor experiential leadership, including wilderness experiences and personal development. The PMEI pathway focuses on natural and cultural history environmental interpretation and education and the social science of conservation. The third pathway provides a flexible route for students to combine parts of the Adventure Recreation and PMEI pathways to create a meaningful personalized set of courses that could include study abroad experiences and prepare students for international contexts of recreation management. The Outdoor Recreation Management option is of interest to students seeking employment in a variety of outdoor recreation and park settings (local, state, and national from urban to wilderness) offering outdoor activities and personal development to the public.

What is Recreation, Park and Tourism Management?

Faculty in Recreation, Park and Tourism Management (RPTM) teach and conduct research and outreach in the areas of recreation, park management, golf management and tourism to address how humans derive benefits from leisure activities. RPTM faculty teach and conduct research in variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives to better understand the natural, psychological, social, economic, and cultural systems that influence human behavior in the context of recreation, parks and tourism. Our interdisciplinary, systems approach enables us to address issues of human well being, and sustainable development through curricula and innovative research programs. Our mission is to transform human health and well-being through engaging people in recreation, park, tourism and leisure activities.

We aim to educate and inspire you to make contributions to society, and our conceptual approach serves as the foundation of what and how we teach. In particular, we integrate topics such as diversity, environmental sustainability, human development, health and well-being, social innovation and entrepreneurship, community, and economic development.

Entrance to Major

Students who have completed 29.1 credits with a 2.00 cumulative grade-point average are eligible for entrance into the major, except for the Professional Golf Management option.

First-year students are admitted directly into the Golf Management option at the University Park campus only. In addition to the University's academic requirements, each student admitted to the Golf Management option must have a playing proficiency represented by a minimum golf handicap of 12 or lower. This must be certified in writing by a Professional Golf Association member or golf coach.

Degree Requirements

For the Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation, Park, and Tourism Management, a minimum of 120 credits is required:

3-4 of the 45 credits for General Education are included in the Requirements for the Major. This includes: 0-3 credits of GS courses; 0-4 credits of GQ courses.

Per Senate Policy 83.80.5, the college dean or campus chancellor and program faculty may require up to 24 credits of course work in the major to be taken at the location or in the college or program where the degree is earned. RPTM requires students to complete 24 credits for the major through courses taken at University Park. Courses taken at other Penn State campuses may not be counted toward this 24 credit minimum. Requirements for the Major

To graduate, a student enrolled in the major must earn a grade of C or better in each course designated by the major as a C-required course, as specified by Senate Policy 82-44 .

Common Requirements for the Major (All Options)

Requirements for the option, commercial recreation and tourism management option (46-47 credits), community recreation management option (43-44 credits), outdoor recreation management option (40-41 credits), professional golf management option (47 credits), general education.

Connecting career and curiosity, the General Education curriculum provides the opportunity for students to acquire transferable skills necessary to be successful in the future and to thrive while living in interconnected contexts. General Education aids students in developing intellectual curiosity, a strengthened ability to think, and a deeper sense of aesthetic appreciation. These are requirements for all baccalaureate students and are often partially incorporated into the requirements of a program. University Degree Requirements

First year engagement.

All students enrolled in a college or the Division of Undergraduate Studies at University Park, and the World Campus are required to take 1 to 3 credits of the First-Year Seminar, as specified by their college First-Year Engagement Plan.

Other Penn State colleges and campuses may require the First-Year Seminar; colleges and campuses that do not require a First-Year Seminar provide students with a first-year engagement experience.

First-year baccalaureate students entering Penn State should consult their academic adviser for these requirements.

Cultures Requirement

6 credits are required and may satisfy other requirements

  • United States Cultures: 3 credits
  • International Cultures: 3 credits

Writing Across the Curriculum

3 credits required from the college of graduation and likely prescribed as part of major requirements.

Total Minimum Credits

A minimum of 120 degree credits must be earned for a baccalaureate degree. The requirements for some programs may exceed 120 credits. Students should consult with their college or department adviser for information on specific credit requirements.

Quality of Work

Candidates must complete the degree requirements for their major and earn at least a 2.00 grade-point average for all courses completed within their degree program.

Limitations on Source and Time for Credit Acquisition

The college dean or campus chancellor and program faculty may require up to 24 credits of course work in the major to be taken at the location or in the college or program where the degree is earned. Credit used toward degree programs may need to be earned from a particular source or within time constraints (see Senate Policy 83-80 ). Academic Advising

The objectives of the university's academic advising program are to help advisees identify and achieve their academic goals, to promote their intellectual discovery, and to encourage students to take advantage of both in-and out-of class educational opportunities in order that they become self-directed learners and decision makers.

Both advisers and advisees share responsibility for making the advising relationship succeed. By encouraging their advisees to become engaged in their education, to meet their educational goals, and to develop the habit of learning, advisers assume a significant educational role. The advisee's unit of enrollment will provide each advisee with a primary academic adviser, the information needed to plan the chosen program of study, and referrals to other specialized resources.

University Requirements and General Education Notes:

US and IL are abbreviations used to designate courses that satisfy Cultural Diversity Requirements (United States and International Cultures).

W, M, X, and Y are the suffixes at the end of a course number used to designate courses that satisfy University Writing Across the Curriculum requirement.

General Education includes Foundations (GWS and GQ), Knowledge Domains (GHW, GN, GA, GH, GS) and Integrative Studies (Inter-domain) requirements. N or Q (Honors) is the suffix at the end of a course number used to help identify an Inter-domain course, but the inter-domain attribute is used to fill audit requirements. Foundations courses (GWS and GQ) require a grade of 'C' or better.

All incoming Schreyer Honors College first-year students at University Park will take ENGL 137H / CAS 137H in the fall semester and ENGL 138T / CAS 138T in the spring semester. These courses carry the GWS designation and satisfy a portion of that General Education requirement. If the student’s program prescribes GWS these courses will replace both ENGL 15 / ENGL 30H and CAS 100A / CAS 100B / CAS 100C . Each course is 3 credits.

Community Recreation Management Option: Recreation, Park, and Tourism Management, B.S. at Greater Allegheny Campus

Career paths.

Four options are offered to help prepare students for management positions in public or private agencies at the federal, state, and local levels. The options offered are:

  • Commercial Recreation and Tourism Management
  • Community Recreation Management
  • Professional Golf Management
  • Outdoor Recreation Management

Management positions include, but are not limited to resorts, event management businesses, golf courses, golf industry businesses, park systems, environmental centers, university intramural and sport club programs, recreation services for the armed forces, and health care facilities. Our multidisciplinary graduate program is designed to educate students about research, theory, and practice related to leisure and recreation as experienced at the individual, societal, and cross-cultural levels. Both the M.S. program and Ph.D. program help students develop an understanding of the social, environmental, psychological, and economic aspects of human behavior in recreation and leisure activities and also allow students to concentrate their studies in:

  • Recreation/tourism management and marketing
  • Commercial recreation and tourism
  • Outdoor recreation and protected area management
  • Community recreation
  • General leisure behavior

A degree from RPTM is suited for you if you have career interests in supervisory and administrative positions in tourism & event management, entertainment, sport & fitness venue management, professional golf management, community recreation, non-profit administration, outdoor experiential leadership, park management, environmental interpretation, natural resource management and youth & senior recreation services.

Opportunities for Graduate Studies

Whether you are looking for a master's degree or your doctorate in RPTM, our multi-disciplinary graduate program is designed to educate students about research, theory and practice related to recreation, parks, tourism and leisure. Both the master of science (M.S.) and the doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) programs help you develop an understanding of the social, environmental, psychological and economic aspects of human behavior in relation to the experience and delivery of recreation, park, tourism and leisure activities.
