Packing for a vacation can be exciting and stressful, especially if you don’t plan to check luggage and need carry on approved stuff. The airlines are pretty strict and you surely don’t want to have to throw stuff away at the security counter.

Per TSA guidelines Each passenger may carry liquids, gels and aerosols in travel-size containers that are 3.4 ounces or100 milliliters. Each passenger is limited to one quart-size bag of liquids, gels and aerosols.

Very glad to have found this website - compared to other sites - mostly same price or lower, better variety, and very good shipping speed (as well as no tax in CA)!

Love your site, and as an added bonus its easier to navigate and your prices are very competitive with other similar sites.

Very good selection. Most items in stock. A few pennies more than at the retailer, but more items to choose from, no need to walk the store.

Love their variety of products in travel sizes. Handy not only for travel but for building and restocking personal first aid & necessity kits.

I needed the travel size items for a homeless shelter service project for my sons christian school. [AllTravelSizes.com] helped me expedite the order to ensure delivery so the project could go on

Wonderful shopping experience. I bought items for a pinata which worked out great.

The 21 Best Travel-Size Beauty Products to Pack on Your Next Trip

By Danielle Sinay

Travel Size Beauty Products

Once upon a time, finding the best travel-size beauty products meant scouring the pharmacy “travel size” section and making do with that one tiny bottle of Cetaphil. But as interest in beauty, skin care, and hair care has evolved, so too have options for travel-size cosmetics. Now you can find almost any product from your beauty routine as a mini, from practical products like tinted sunscreen and thigh chafing balm to must-have face serums to tiny hair tools. Some might even be your favs you use everyday, in their original packaging, no less!

Whether you’re packing for vacation or want to test out cult-favorite cosmetics before you commit (no judgment here!), there are dozens of beloved beauty products that can now be procured in a compact, easy-to-pack, and TSA-approved form. Keep scrolling and see the 21 best travel-size beauty products ahead.

All products featured on Glamour are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Supergoop Mini Glowscreen Sunscreen SPF 40 Mini Size

Supergoop! Mini Glowscreen Sunscreen SPF 40 Mini

Supergoop's Glow Screen is the ultimate multitasker and therefore perfect for toting on your next trip. Not only does it provide SPF 40 coverage, but it leaves the face glowing, glimmering, and sun-kissed without leaving a white cast , and can be worn solo for gorgeous “no-makeup makeup” glam or underneath foundation for a lit-from-within look. At 1.7 oz., the original bottle is technically TSA-approved, but the 0.68-oz. mini size is ideal for carrying in day-to-day bags, purses, and pockets. The more room, the merrier, right?

Paula's Choice Mini Skin Perfecting 2 BHA Liquid Exfoliant

Paula’s Choice Mini Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant

You’ve likely heard all about Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant, the cult-favorite toner that really, truly works. But did you know it comes in an itty-bitty 1-ounce option too? Well, now you do. It’s so small it takes up little to no room, meaning you have that much more space to pack souvenirs without worrying about disrupting your skin care routine.

Megababe Thigh Rescue

Megababe Thigh Rescue Mini

Thigh chafing is no joke, especially while walking more than usual on summer vacation. Fortunately, Megababe knows their audience and launched a mini version of their life- (and thigh-) saving anti-friction stick that’s just 0.81 oz. It’s so tiny you can throw it in any purse or even a pocket, and reapply as much as necessary. Megababe’s stick is derm approved too: “This easy-to-use formula glides on easily, and includes aloe and vitamin E to help soothe the skin, as well as pomegranate seed extract to protect the skin and grapeseed oil to help hydrate,” says Marisa Garshick, MD , FAAD, board-certified dermatologist.

Drunk Elephant Day Dream Kit CFirma Fresh Day Serum BHydra Intensive Hydration Serum

Drunk Elephant Day Dream Kit: Mini C-Firma Fresh Day Serum + B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum

One of the hardest parts of traveling is having to part with your favorite face serums , so beauty buffs can breathe a collective sigh of relief: Drunk Elephant now offers its viral fitamin C serum in a 0.28-oz. form. The C-Firma Fresh Day Serum brightens and firms the complexion while improving skin texture and tone, and does so without clogging pores. It also comes with a mini B-Hydra serum, which provides additional hydration for a radiant finish.

Living Proof Travel Size Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo

Living Proof Travel-Size Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo

Whether you’re prone to sweating or simply don’t have time to shower, dry shampoo is a fairly universal travel essential. The only problem? The best ones usually don’t come in travel size, especially since they’re often aerosol cans. Or, at least they didn’t, until Living Proof released a 2.4-oz. version of their best-selling dry shampoo. You can even pack this in your carry-on. See you never, greasy bangs!

12 Best Sunscreens to Apply Under Makeup

Belif Mini The True Cream Aqua Bomb

Gel based and lightweight, the Belif True Cream Aqua Bomb is a Glamour editor favorite that’s perfect for summer. It doesn’t clog pores, cause breakouts, or provoke excess oil production , but it is super moisturizing and gentle enough to not irritate sensitive skin. It also works remarkably well as a base or a nonsticky makeup primer or layering base, and is available in an itty-bitty 0.84-ounce mini size . So whether you want to try before you buy bigger or plan to carry it onto your summer vacation flight, you (and your skin) are covered.

Dermalogica Mini Daily Microfoliant Exfoliator

Dermalogica Mini Daily Microfoliant Exfoliator

You might be taking a break from work while on vacation, but that doesn’t mean you should have to stop exfoliating. Consistently named one of the best face scrubs, Dermalogica’s microfoliant exfoliator combats dullness and brightness without being too rough on the skin. Plus, the formula is customizable—it’s a powder that turns into a paste when mixed with water—and gentle enough to use daily. And now, it comes in a 0.45-oz. option.

Sunday Riley Power Couple Mini Kit Good Genes Luna Sleeping Oil

Sunday Riley Power Couple Mini Kit: Mini Good Genes & Luna Sleeping Oil

Celebrities, editors, and dermatologists love Sunday Riley’s iconic Good Genes serum—it’s cited in practically every other Drop the Routine —and with good reason. This serum smooths, brightens, and clears skin while plumping and combatting fine lines, and works in as little as three minutes. The Luna Sleeping Oil is esteemed too—Paris Hilton and makeup artist Nam Vo are both fans—since it helps brighten the skin while soothing redness and irritation. Together, these MVPs are unstoppable: And now, at 0.27 and 0.17 oz., they’re TSA-approved.

BaBylissPRO Mini Straightening Iron with Travel Pouch

BaBylissPRO Mini Straightening Iron with Travel Pouch

Most hotels and Airbnbs have hair dryers but are without essential hair tools like hair straighteners. But while some hair simply can’t be tamed with just a dryer, packing a full-size hair straightener can be a pain. Enter BaByliss, who re-created the company’s popular hair straightener in a tiny travel size, complete with a pouch. Now you can straighten and fix your hair anywhere and everywhere that has an outlet.

Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray

Oribe Mini Dry Texturizing Spray

Texturizing spray is truly the unsung hero of the hairstyling world, and Oribe’s is often credited as the industry gold standard. Adored by beauty editors and hairstylists alike, it’s great on all hair types and textures; provides lightweight hold and texture without feeling sticky or weighing hair down; adds volume, texture, and grit; and somehow smells good too. The fact that it comes in a 2.2-oz. bottle is pretty much a miracle.

Bumble and Bumble Hairdressers Invisible Oil

Bumble and Bumble Mini Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil

Bumble and Bumble offers most of its products in travel sizes, which has earned the brand a permanent place in many beauty lover carry-ons. This oil not only makes hair smell and feel amazing, but it completely combats humidity-induced frizz while protecting hair from heat and UV rays. At 0.28 oz., it easily packs in your purse on hot, humid days so you can reapply for extra protection and frizz defense.

Tatcha Mini Liquid Silk Canvas Featherweight Protective Primer

Tatcha Mini Liquid Silk Canvas: Featherweight Protective Primer

Tatcha’s Liquid Silk Canvas is a Glamour Beauty Award winner —and considered one of Tatcha’s best products —for a reason. It smooths and blurs the skin upon application, almost like IRL airbrushing, and provides the perfect canvas for foundation, since it doesn’t budge, get oily, or lose coverage all day. Which is why the fact that it’s available in a 0.35-oz. bottle is a life-, and makeup-, saver.

Laura Mercier Mini Translucent Loose Setting Powder

Laura Mercier Mini Translucent Loose Setting Powder

Laura Mercier’s cult-favorite loose setting powder is a godsend when it comes to setting makeup, but the packaging is on the larger side, which makes it hard to travel with. Fortunately, Laura Mercier’s setting powder now comes in a perfectly combat-ready 0.33-oz. travel size so you and your makeup are set for your next trip.

Mario Badescu Travel Size Facial Spray With Aloe Herbs and Rosewater

Mario Badescu Travel-Size Facial Spray With Aloe, Herbs, and Rosewater

When something is Martha Stewart-–approved , you just don’t question it. So when Stewart’s facialist Carmela Barabas revealed she uses and loves the cult-favorite facial spray that revives dehydrated skin, we knew it deserved a spot on this list. Especially since it’s so useful for dehydrated, post-flight skin and refreshing touch-ups throughout travel days.

Olaplex Healthy Hair Maintenance Kit Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector Intensive Bond Building Hair Treatment

Olaplex Healthy Hair Maintenance Kit: Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector + Intensive Bond Building Hair Treatment

Everyone from Emma Stone to Glamour editors to hair pros swear that Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector is one of the best hair treatments around. Glamour even named it our choice for best hair mask over all . That said, some editors specifically point to the combination of No. 3 and the Intensive Bond Building Hair Treatment as what truly transformed their hair, which makes the fact that both are available as 1-oz. bottles that much more convenient—and good for our hair. Also of note? Their equally beloved Olaplex No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo and Conditioner come in travel sizes too.

Garnier SKINACTIVE Micellar Cleansing Water Allin1 Makeup Remover Cleanser

Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water All-in-1 Makeup Remover & Cleanser Mini

Garnier’s micellar water might not scream “cult-favorite beauty product” at first, but this versatile skin care staple undeniably deserves a spot on the list. Especially since it makes for such an ideal travel buddy, no matter the kind of trip you’re on: This classic cosmetic allows you to remove makeup, cleanse your face, and soothe the skin without any water.

Milk Makeup Lip Cheek Cream Blush Lip Color

Milk Makeup Mini Lip + Cheek Cream Blush + Lip Color

Milk Makeup

Who doesn’t love a multipurpose beauty product, especially when it comes to travel? There is so little space to pack as is, so having one cosmetic that acts as a beautiful blush and lip tint —formulated with hydrating ingredients—can make all the difference. Milk Makeup released special-edition travel sizes of the cult-favorite blush on their website too; they’re so compact, they can fit into the tiniest of bag or even your pocket.

Clinique Mini Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm Makeup Remover

Clinique Mini Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm Makeup Remover

Whether you double-cleanse to remove makeup or triple-cleanse just in case, a solid cleansing balm is a universal beauty staple. And Clinique’s is widely considered the gold standard in that department, so much so it was nominated for a Glamour Reader’s Choice Award for best cleanser . Gentle, hydrating, and extremely effective, this cleansing balm melts away makeup, sunscreen, and dirt, and now comes in a mini 1-oz. size.

Smashbox X BECCA Mini Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter

Smashbox X Becca Mini Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter

Becca’s going out of business was heartbreaking for everyone, especially beauty buffs who loved the brand’s Champagne Pop pressed highlighter . Fortunately, Smashbox took it upon itself to bring the beloved highlighter back—and offer it in a travel size that’s so small, many fans forget it’s in their bag in the first place.

Thrive Causemetics Deluxe Mini Liquid Lash Extensions

Thrive Causemetics Deluxe Mini Liquid Lash Extensions

Thrive Causemetics Deluxe Liquid Lash Extensions mascara is another universally beloved makeup essential . Formulated with liquid fibers, orchid stem cell complex, and Japanese pepper extract, this mascara builds and lengthens lashes, encourages lash growth, and helps condition them, so you’re supporting your lashes while making them look glam too. And when it comes to the mini, it’s so tiny you'll barely notice it’s in your bag, though you’ll certainly see its effects on your glam.

Urban Decay Mini All Nighter LongLasting Makeup Setting Spray

Urban Decay Mini All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray

If you’re going to bother bringing all these travel-size beauty products on vacation, you might as well make sure they stay put. Lightweight and easy to use, Urban Decay’s All Nighter setting spray really lives up to its name, remaining smudge- and transfer-proof for up to 16 hours. Translation? Your glam will stay in place whether you you embark on a historical walking tour or dance all night at the discoteque (or both). It’s no wonder it has as an average rating of 4.6 across Sephora, Ulta, and Amazon—especially now that it comes in a 1-oz. bottle.

The 11 Best Mini-Sized Beauty Products, According to a Beauty Writer Who Travels All the Time

what is travel size products

Byrdie / Amelia Manley

Minis are really cute; whether it’s a toy car, a baby animal, or a doll-sized kitchen set, miniature items have a way of melting my heart every time. My favorite category of all within the “mini” genre is probably a dead-giveaway: makeup. I’ve spent hours in those dangerous check-out lanes of Sephora where exclusively-made miniature skincare, makeup, brushes, and sponges have been placed (brilliantly) for customers awaiting check-out. On several occasions, I’ve gone in for literally only one item, and ended up leaving with dozens of others because of a long check-out line; I just kept finding more of my favorite products in travel sizes.

Because I travel a lot, I dedicate a good amount of time to strategically packing. I usually bring an entire pharmacy with me because I never know what to expect from a foreign country’s drugstores or local shopping, lest I forget something. There’s also nothing worse for me than re-purchasing something I know that I already have at home. If you’re like me and you belong to the COO club (carry-on only), you’ve had your fair share of experiences with an overstuffed bag. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve had to sit on my Rimowa luggage, praying it doesn’t crack, just so that I could zip it into something shaped like an Oreo cookie (the fabric space-expanders spilling out everywhere).

After finding out that many brands make miniature versions of their beloved products, I started researching to see what else was out there. Since switching exclusively to minis for travel , my bags have gotten a lot lighter.

With travel season upon us, I decided to round up all of the best mini products. So, whether you’re packing for your trip to Mallorca, you want to try something new with less cost commitment, or you just love how cute miniature makeup looks on your vanity, I’ve rounded up all the fan-favorites here.

Final Verdict

We're giving top honors to the Augustinus Bader The Cream . Its innovative formula is packed with natural amino acids, vitamins, and molecules to help regenerate your body's own stem cells. It's also packed with great hydrating ingredients like aloe leaf, avocado, shea butter, and more, so it certainly lives up to its claim of replacing every skin product you need after cleansing.

Looking to cover up while you're on the go? Try the Nars Mini Radiant Creamy Concealer . It's great for adding highlight, contour, or medium to full coverage concealing without dryness or creasing.

What to Look for in Travel Size Beauty Products

Packaging materials.

Whether you're just tossing it in your bag for touchups or traveling on a plane, you'll want to make sure the product you're buying is made of up durable materials. It shouldn't pop open or break and spill all over your bag.

Application

While minis are compact and easy to pack when you need to travel light, always consider the product's application. If you have to pack extra tools for it, then it takes up more space than its cute small size. If you aren't positive what more will be needed for products, reference all-in-one makeup kits to review what you need to accompany assorted products.

You might find yourself distracted by the shiniest and most exciting products, but don't forget to purchase and pack the everyday items you need, too. Whether your staples include brow gel, sunscreen, or lip gloss, you'll want to have a mini-version of the things you rely on the most, not just the fun extras.

When looking to travel by air, you'll need to adhere to the TSA rules for carry-on cosmetics. You're allowed to bring a total of one quart-sized clear, resealable bag filled with products. Inside this bag, each item needs to be 3.4 ounces or less.

Provided you will use up whatever is contained in your travel-size toiletries, they are worth it. That's because you were able to carry them on rather than pay extra for a checked bag, which costs more. You'll want to recycle them instead of putting them in the trash to reduce your carbon footprint.

Travel-size toiletries last about the same amount of time as their full-size counterparts; it's dependent on how long that specific product lasts. Mascara can get dried out and exposed to bacteria , and should be replaced every few months.

The TSA is pretty strict about traveling with liquids, and because of that, its rules about what counts as a liquid err on the, well, solid side. Aerosols, pastes, creams, and gels are all liquids, so makeup products like mascara, foundation, eyeline r , moisturizer, and perfume are all considered liquid.

6.  ELEMIS Travel Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm

ELEMIS Travel Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm

If your face wash or makeup remover almost always explodes in your toiletries bag during travel, try bringing along a cleansing balm instead. This mini version of ELEMIS' best-selling formula melts off all traces of makeup, deeply cleanses, and plumps up fine lines and wrinkles with collagen-rich ingredients.

7.  SUNDAY RILEY C.E.O. 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum

This formula drenches skin in long-lasting hydration and is proven to visibly plump fine lines .

11.  PACIFICA Glow Baby Brightening Face Wash

PACIFICA Glow Baby Brightening Face Wash

Between running from one attraction to the next and eating most meals out, you could spend hours away from your hotel or Airbnb while on vacay. That's why we love this brightening face wash from PACIFICA, which includes both AHA and vitamin C to cleanse, exfoliate, and help brighten and even out your skin tone .

14.  SIMPLE Water Boost Micellar Makeup Remover Pads

SIMPLE Water Boost Micellar Makeup Remover Pads

Our preferred makeup remover tends to be a bottle of micellar water , but when traveling, it can be hard to beat the ease of makeup wipes. The 14 Best Travel-Size Beauty Products

You won’t have to abandon your regimen with these excellent miniature picks.

travel skincare

Few things are more exciting than traveling, especially after almost two years of doing nearly everything from home. Whether you’re heading home to visit your family or escaping the cold weather and fleeing to a sandy beach in the tropics, there’s a certain thrill that comes with packing a bag and getting out of town for a bit. Exciting as it is, though, there are a few aspects of travel that we’d rather do without — and we’re not just talking about long check-in lines, flight delays, and $7 bottles of water at the airport.

Any beauty aficionado can attest to the challenge of picking from your trusty arsenal of skincare and hair-care products that you’ve tailored to your wants and needs. You’ve likely spent years building and curating your beauty routine. So, when faced with TSA’s confining nothing-greater-than-3.4-ounces size restriction, it can often feel like leaving your beloved toiletries behind is the only real option (after all, who wants to try squeezing serums and toners into travel-friendly bottles only to end up sacrificing lots of expensive product?).

Luckily for the current and future globe-trotters among us, though, more beauty brands are offering travel-size versions of their best-selling skincare, hair care, and makeup than ever before — and their adorably miniature sizes are sure to bring a smile to your face. From individually packaged facial wipes and mini serums to petite perfumes and compact hair dryers, here are the travel-friendly beauty products we can’t go anywhere without.

The best travel-size cleanser: Youth to the People Superfood Cleanser

The best travel-size cleanser: Youth to the People Superfood Cleanser

Between the free-flying germs at the airport and the harsh air quality during your flight, traveling can expose skin to some seriously concerning dirt and grime, so it’s important to have a cleanser you can trust to help restore purity and cleanliness when you finally arrive. The consistently popular Superfood Cleanser from industry-favorite brand Youth to the People harnesses the antioxidant powers of kale, spinach, and green tea to prevent buildup in pores and balance your skin’s pH without drying or stripping.

The best travel-size toner: Glow Recipe Mini Watermelon Glow PHA + BHA Pore-Tight Toner

The best travel-size toner: Glow Recipe Mini Watermelon Glow PHA + BHA Pore-Tight Toner

Toner can be a game-changing step in any skincare routine, and going on vacation is hardly a reason to skip it. Fortunately, with this mini version of Glow Recipe’s best-selling Watermelon Glow Toner, you won’t have to. The PHA and BHA-infused lightweight toner is rich with watermelon extract to hydrate and soothe skin while delivering essential vitamins and amino acids, and it is suitable for any skin type.

The best travel-size serum: Murad Mini Vitamin C Glycolic Brightening Serum

The best travel-size serum: Murad Mini Vitamin C Glycolic Brightening Serum

Vitamin C is a hugely important ingredient to incorporate into your routine, as it protects skin from harmful toxins and free radicals, helps heal blemishes, and reduces hyperpigmentation and dark spots. This serum from Murad is not only rich with vitamin C, but it’s also formulated with glycolic acid to help the antioxidants penetrate more deeply and phyto luminescent extract to visibly illuminate the skin.

The best travel-size moisturizer: Augustinus Bader Mini The Rich Cream with TFC8 Face Moisturizer

The best travel-size moisturizer: Augustinus Bader Mini The Rich Cream with TFC8 Face Moisturizer

In recent years, one moisturizer has risen through the ranks of the skincare world more than any other, becoming an instant favorite of celebrities and beauty insiders everywhere: Augustinus Bader. The super-luxe face cream is intensely hydrating and is powered by the brand’s proprietary TFC8, which has been clinically shown to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. Grab this mini version to help combat the drying effects of flying and keep your skin working overtime, even when you’re on vacation.

The best travel-size face oil: The Feelist Most Wanted Radiant Facial Oil

The best travel-size face oil: The Feelist Most Wanted Radiant Facial Oil

Although the moisturizer versus facial oil debate is alive and well, we know that the decision between the two really does come down to personal preference. With that in mind, you should have a travel-friendly facial oil at the ready, and the Feelist’s CBD-infused Most Wanted oil is just that. The best-selling oil is deeply hydrating and helps fight blemishes while calming redness and inflammation to leave you with the best glow of your life.

The best travel-size face mask: onå New York Airplane Mode Intense Hydration Gel Mask

The best travel-size face mask: onå New York Airplane Mode Intense Hydration Gel Mask

Traveling can dry out skin like almost nothing else, and sometimes it takes more than just your go-to moisturizer to replenish its hydration, which is why the Intense Hydration Gel Mask from onå New York is such a savior. With hyaluronic acid, beta-glucan, and camellia japonica, the sheet mask restores the skin’s moisture barrier and prevents dehydration while enhancing skin elasticity to deliver a visibly plumped and energized complexion.

The best travel-size sunscreen: Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40

The best travel-size sunscreen: Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40

Whether you’re spending a week on the beach or heading to the snow, any dermatologist will tell you that the most important thing to have in your suitcase is sunscreen. This adorable mini from cult-favorite sun-care brand Supergoop! offers the beloved invisible and weightless sunscreen with SPF 40 protection in a travel-friendly size, and it’s a can’t-miss for your next trip.

The best travel-size makeup remover: Then I Met You Cleansing Balm

The best travel-size makeup remover: Then I Met You Cleansing Balm

Instead of using wasteful makeup wipes, consider using a cleansing balm. There’s a reason that this luxurious balm from Then I Met You has won so many awards. The star of this show, seaberry oil, is an antioxidant and fatty acid that softens skin and gives this balm its beautiful color. Also formulated with grapeseed oil, olive oil, and vitamin E, Then I Met You Cleansing Balm will undoubtedly leave your skin feeling nourished and radiant.

The best travel-size hair-care set: Oribe #OribeObsessed Set

The best travel-size hair-care set: Oribe #OribeObsessed Set

Many folks skip hair care when packing for a trip, instead settling for whatever generic shampoo and conditioner is at their hotel shower, but your locks shouldn’t have to suffer just because you’re on the road. Instead, reach for the #OribeObsessed Set, which features the brand’s best-selling Gold Lust Repair and Restore Shampoo and Conditioner to help heal damaged hair and protect it from future damage and the Dry Texturizing Spray to build volume and texture while absorbing oil at the source.

The best travel-size dry shampoo: OUAI Mini Super Dry Shampoo

The best travel-size dry shampoo: OUAI Mini Super Dry Shampoo

There are some occasions when washing your hair simply isn’t an option — and then there are others when it is an option but not one that you’re choosing to take. For those times, a good dry shampoo is an absolute must, and this super-absorbent dry shampoo from OUAI is a surefire way to revive hair’s volume and body while leaving it clean and healthy. No one will ever know you didn’t just come straight from a blowout!

The best travel-size hair dryer: GHD Flight Travel Hair Dryer

The best travel-size hair dryer: GHD Flight Travel Hair Dryer

Much like shampoo and conditioner, a hair dryer is often something people think to pack when traveling, instead of opting to save space and leave their hair at the mercy of a subpar hotel hair dryer. But with GHD’s Flight Travel Hair Dryer, you don’t have to sacrifice your hair’s health or valuable real estate in your suitcase. The compact hair dryer is as powerful as it is portable and features an array of speed and temperature settings, dual voltage, and a removable nozzle, and it folds up nicely to fit amongst all your other things.

The best travel-size hairbrush: Drybar Lil’ Lemon Drop Daily Detangler

The best travel-size hairbrush: Drybar Lil’ Lemon Drop Daily Detangler

A hairbrush is something you definitely can’t (and shouldn’t) live without, but the one you use at home will likely take up far more space in your suitcase than it really needs to, which is why we love Drybar’s Lil’ Lemon Drop Daily Detangler. The mini brush is suitable for all hair types and uses flexible bristles to detangle wet or dry hair with ease, and it’s small enough to fit in even your smallest purses.

The best travel-size deodorant: Megababe Rosy Pits Mini

The best travel-size deodorant: Megababe Rosy Pits Mini

There’s a lot of talk about natural deodorants, but if we’re honest with ourselves, we know that none of them seems to do the trick — that is, until Megababe’s Rosy Pits. Instead of using aluminum to block sweat ducts from producing sweat, the antiperspirant helps prevent odor-causing bacteria from forming on the skin without the use of baking soda, alcohol, or parabens. The deodorant goes on smooth and clear and keeps your underarms smelling of roses all day long, and now you can grab the mini size to take it with you on all your travels, near and far.

The best travel-size perfume: Diptyque Do Son Travel Spray

The best travel-size perfume: Diptyque Do Son Travel Spray

Perfume is often left behind when we travel because of the space it takes up in a bag and its non-essential nature, but really, who wouldn’t want to smell their best when on vacation? For the best of both worlds, try the Do Son Travel Spray from beloved fragrance brand Diptyque. The portable bottle is the ideal travel companion, thanks to its compact size and ability to be refilled with any classic Diptyque perfume. But it’s also a traveler itself, with a design that’s inspired by the vintage noticeboards that once appeared in airports and train stations around the world, and you can even customize the bottle with your own name, word, or phrase.

13 Best Travel Toiletry Bottles: Editor Tested, Leakproof, & Reusable

By Meaghan Kenny

13 Best Travel Toiletry Bottles Editor Tested Leakproof Reusable

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Beauty and skincare products like shampoo, moisturizer, and face wash are essential on every packing list , whether you're heading to a hotel or are staying with friends or family. Since buying miniature versions of your favorite products can be expensive—and typically means purchasing a whole lot of single-use plastics—having practical and reliable toiletry travel bottles you can pull out for every trip is a must.

To make sure the reusable bottles we're throwing in our Dopp kit are easy to use and don't leak, we tested out a variety of affordable travel sets to see which ones actually get the job done. Below, you'll find 13 of the best travel toiletry bottles that will protect the contents of your luggage—and all of the creams, soaps, and serums you've shelled out for—and keep you organized on the go. Even better, all of these picks are TSA-friendly in size, so you don't have to worry about any of your favorite products being thrown out at the airport. As an added bonus, many of these travel bottles are available on Amazon Prime, so you can get your hands on them quickly before a last-minute getaway.

How we tested

I scoured the internet to find the most popular travel toiletry bottles—searching a variety of retailers, reading hundreds of reviews, and considering online ratings. After my initial research, I put many reusable toiletry bottles to the test, trying out dozens of options that range in price, size, and design. I've had some of these toiletry bottles for over a year and they've accompanied me on a mix of weeklong vacations in checked luggage and short weekend trips in tightly-packed duffel bags .

Over the last several months, I tested another batch of options: I've filled them with a variety of skincare, hair care, and body products—thick body wash, contact solution, and leave-in conditioner included. No matter how organized I try to stay, my bathroom counter at every hotel always becomes cluttered with my many toiletries and hair products . The LiquiSnugs look like your classic silicone travel bottles, but they feature a clever suction cup on the back that allows you to stick them onto any shower wall—freeing up limited counter space. These are great for in-shower products like shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. This set of four bottles features two 3-ounce bottles and two 2-ounce bottles, so you can choose how much product you need depending on the length of your trip. Another smart design feature: Twist the top to adjust the label name so you won't forget what's inside. I've had these for about a year now and I consistently reach for these to pack shampoo and conditioner.

Pros : The unique suction cup design makes them great for shower products.

Cons : These occasionally will fall off shower walls if there's not a little bit of water to keep them in place.

This Amazon bestseller is versatile enough for every type of traveler. The 18-pack from Tocelffe features four silicone bottles of varying size (two 3-ounce bottles and two 2-ounce bottles), four small jars for creams and serums, two spray bottles, two spatulas, a funnel, labels, and a cleaning brush. These all come in a waterproof toiletry bag that you can reuse to carry makeup or tech essentials. In this set, I find myself mostly reaching for the ultra-soft silicone bottles, which are great for products like body wash, face cleanser, and micellar water. Each of these bottles feature three-layer leak-proof tops so you don't have to worry about spills in your bag. Something I love about these bottles is how they can be bent and squeezed easily to get every last bit of product out of them.

Pros: Very affordable, comes in a clear toiletry case, and the bottles' wide opening makes it easy to refill. Cons: The small plastic jars are not as reliable as the silicone bottles in this set.

If you're just looking for a few affordable no-frills travel bottles, these are for you. Available in a variety of colors, the silicone bottles do just what they say they will. They're leakproof, come in a set of four, and are easy to refill and clean. While there’s no bells and whistles, these three-ounce bottles pleasantly surprised me with just how much product they fit compared to some of the other classic silicone bottles we tested, making them an ideal option for a longer vacation. Plus, these have an average of 4.5 stars on Amazon with over 11,000 global reviews.

Pros: Versatility; available in many colorways

Cons : This set doesn't come with labels or a proper toiletry case.

Another solid choice for travelers is this set of four 3-ounce silicone travel bottles. These are squeezable, leakproof, and versatile enough to use for everything from shower products and soaps to sauces and baby food. These reusable bottles are all the same size and each a different color so you can differentiate them. Bonus: This set comes in a transparent toiletry case to keep them all organized in.

Pros : This set is available in a dozen colorways; wide opening makes them easy to refill without needing a funnel. Cons : This set doesn't come with labels.

If you prefer to bring along a bar of soap instead of using what's provided at the hotel, this compact soap box is a great travel companion. Inside, there's a soap mat that absorbs any excess water and prevents the soap from becoming mushy. I've used other plastic soap cases before without a mat and it always leaves a mess. This one features a silicone band that wraps tightly around the box for extra protection, and is about the size of a deck of cards.

Pros : Fits most commonly used soap brands, affordable, and features a simple-to-use design.

Cons : The soap box needs the band to stay secure so be careful not to lose it.

I've been a fan of Cadence's capsules for a few years now. These leakproof, airtight, and watertight magnetic capsules are unlike any other travel bottles I've used and are a true game changer when it comes to packing your own beauty products. The individual capsules magnetically snap together to take up as little space as possible in your Dopp kit and are designed without any right angles or edges, so you get every last bit of product available.

The original .56-ounce individual capsules are great for weekend trips and storing small items like daily vitamins and safety pins. The Capsule Flex System allows you to customize your own bundle with your choice of small , medium , and large sizes, as well as The Extender —an add-on that allows you to increase the size of the bottle when you need more room. This makes it so easy to customize your travel routine, whether you want to pack extra product for longer trips or bring enough body wash for you and your travel buddy. With The Flex System, you can still choose your own label for each capsule (the labels are interchangeable), as well as the color and number of capsules in your bundle.

Pros : It's easy to get every last drop of product inside each capsule and they are so easy to rinse out and reuse. The custom labels can be swapped out depending on what you're packing.

Cons : These are the most expensive option on our list.

I was eager to test out the Ries travel bottles after hearing a lot of buzz about the product and seeing them make their way into retailers like Sephora and Goop. These are a more elevated, aesthetically pleasing take on the classic reusable travel bottles you may have used in the past. Ries prioritized sustainability and design with these essentials: Each bottle is made from recycled plastic and features a large opening at the top, which makes it easy to refill and clean (not to mention, they're dishwasher safe). Travelers can purchases these bottles individually (a 3.4-ounce bottle or a 1.7-ounce bottle) or in a set with both sizes . My favorite thing about these bottles is the airless pump—I feel so glamorous while doing my nighttime skincare routine with these, and it makes it easier to use products like face wash or cleanser on the road. The bottles are pre-labeled (shampoo, conditioner, body, face) and you can twist the top to the side to conceal the opening, so product won't spill out.

Pros : Sustainably made; if you prefer a pump, these are for you.

Cons : On the pricier side; the bottles are a bit bulky and take up a little more room in my makeup bag than most travel-size products I use.

Finally, a solution to my contact lens woes. I can't count the number of times I've stopped into a drugstore to buy a mini bottle of contact lens solution before heading out on a trip, or to pick up rewetting drops because I'm dealing with dry contacts while away from home. This compact case makes cleaning and caring for contacts on the go much easier—it comes with an easy-to-fill reusable dropper that gives me a long weekend's worth of solution, a contact case, and has a mirror to help get them in and out. (I don't like to fly in contacts, so this is particularly handy if I forget to switch to my glasses before leaving home.) It weighs next to nothing, and will fit in all but my smallest handbags, so I've been keeping it on me regularly, not just when traveling. — Madison Flager, senior commerce editor

Pros : It comes with a tiny pair of tweezers to make removing contacts from the case less messy. Cons : The contact solution holder isn't large enough for weeklong trips.

what is travel size products

I admit I've also been guilty of buying mini versions of my favorite contact solution. As much as I love reusable toiletry bottles for my skincare and hair products, I've never had anything that felt right for the consistency of my contact solution. I wear daily lenses, meaning I don't need a whole lot of solution with me when I travel, so it is a little frustrating to carry around a bottle that takes up precious space in my Dopp kit. Lately, I've been carrying about the Cauyuan eye glass case which comes with a super small dropper for contact solution. This refillable dropper holds just enough contact solution for weekend trips and shorter vacations and takes up such little space (I've even found myself tossing it in my handbag in case my eyes get a little dry.) This durable case keeps all of my eye care essentials together and protected, with a separate compartment for eye glasses, and another that holds the dropper, tweezers, a contact case, and a mirror.

Pros : All of my eyewear essentials are now in once place and stay organized; the dropper is small enough to fit in a tiny purse. Cons : The compartment for your eye glasses is on the small size—if you have thick or bulky frames, they might not fit.

what is travel size products

I've never found a reusable spray bottle for my perfume that I've liked, so I've always relied on buying miniature versions of each of my favorite fragrances. But let's be real—those travel-size perfume bottles are expensive! They're often made of glass, too, making them vulnerable to breaking in your luggage. Enter the Vonovo mini refillable perfume bottles: Each of these holds 0.2 ounces of your favorite scent, more than enough for a long vacation. This set comes with five spray bottles, so you can bring along any of your favorites—or all of them. And they are so easy to use—simply pull off the top of your full-size perfume, press the bottom of the mini bottle on top of it, and keep clicking until its refilled. Each of the bottles have a clear vial inside so you can see how much product you have left. My favorite part: These are so tiny—think the size of a lipstick— meaning I can even bring them with me on a date night when I'm only carrying a small purse .

Pros : Easy to refill and compact enough to fit in even the tiniest of travel bags Cons : These spray bottles wont match the look of your full-size perfume and don't have labels, so you'll have to remember based on the color of the mini bottle you choose. Also, these can be refilled with the same perfume, but I wouldn't recommend reusing them with another scent.

what is travel size products

For those with a more rigid skincare or haircare routine, this 16-pack lets you bring along every last product you want—and it all fits into one reusable case. The set comes with four silicone bottles, four jars, two spray bottles, two scoopers, a funnel, and a cleaning brush. The variety means you can pack everything from soap and shampoo to serums and sprays in here, and the cleaning brush makes the bottles easy to clean and re-use. I like this set best for packing my more expensive skincare serums and creams in the small jars that have a scooper to use.

Pros : A variety of types of containers

Cons : The toiletry case the bottles come in isn't the best quality.

what is travel size products

The Kitsch Ultimate travel set includes leakproof holders that are compact and lightweight enough to pack in a purse or tote bag . In addition to three flat pouches, this set also comes with two pump bottles, two mini jars, one mini funnel, one mini spatula, and one mini pipette. This set is best for a longer trip—say, a European vacation or a cross-country road trip —as you can store a lot more shampoo, conditioner, and lotions in the pouches without going over any TSA limits (plus, they'll get lighter as you use them).

Pros : The flat pouches are easy to pack and take up less room in a Dopp kit than bulkier bottles.

Cons : The pouches are a little bit harder to refill than bottles with a wide opening.

what is travel size products

If you're packing toiletries for your entire family , this 21-pack of travel bottles has you covered. This package comes with four silicone bottles, four cream jars, four toothbrush covers, two spray bottles, two pump bottles, two trowels, a funnel, and labels to keep everything straight. Whether it's a trip to Disney World or multi-generational cruise , this set makes packing for the whole family easy.

Pros : These come with toothbrush covers–a nice travel accessory that none of the other options on our list offers.

Cons : Not ideal for weekend trips or light packers.

What is a toiletry item?

When I started traveling, someone took me by surprise when they asked me, “What are toiletries?” Before we get started, I want to quickly clarify what they are.

The toiletries definition from Cambridge Dictionary is: “articles used in washing and taking care of one’s body, such as soap, shampoo, and toothpaste”.

To be as helpful and efficient as possible, we’re including a variety of items in our toiletries list including grooming items, beauty products, and other essentials.

What toiletries can I take on a plane?

One of the most important things to know before you start planning for your trip is what you are allowed to bring in your suitcase. The toiletries you can take on a plane depend on whether or not you are checking your luggage.

what is travel size products

For cabin or carryon toiletries: airlines require that liquid products be no more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and all bottles must fit in a clear quart size ziplock bag when traveling with a carry on. Products that need to be inside the quart size ziplock bag are liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes. This is called the 3-1-1 Liquids Rule .

Clear Travel Toiletry Bag

For checked toiletries:  items that are in containers larger than 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters (regardless of amount ) should be in checked baggage. Visit this TSA page to find out exactly what items are allowed in a checked bag. It’s actually an interesting read!

These guidelines are for US-based airlines. However, these tend to be the general guidelines across all airlines. For specific items, always check the website of the airline or contact them and ask them directly.

How do you keep your liquids from leaking?

Here’s a tip I shared on Oprah to help you prevent liquids from leaking in luggage: remove the cap from the bottle, place a small square of plastic wrap over the opening, and replace the cap.

The reason your bottles leak or explode on a flight is due to changes in air pressure. As the plane goes up, the pressure causes the bottle to compress (as if you were squeezing it with your hand). The plastic wrap acts as a seal to prevent leaks.

the-ultimate-guide-to-travel-toiletries

YAMYONE Leakproof Travel Bottles

This is the reason why store bought travel size toiletries are never completely full. You need to allow a little bit of extra space so the liquids don’t get pushed out by the changes in pressure. (This is also the reason why your ears get plugged while flying.)

The solution: Don’t fill your bottles all the way to the top. Instead, only fill them by 2/3 or 75%.

How to Pack Toiletries for Travel

Follow the below step-by-step guide on how to pack toiletries to determine what you will and will not need to bring along with how to downsize items.

Step 1: Planning and Preparation

Step 2: eliminate, step 3: downsize, step 4: travel containers.

the-ultimate-guide-to-travel-toiletries

Start by laying out all the grooming and beauty products you use on a day to day basis. Which of these can you take on your trip and which will you need to leave behind? Choose anything and everything you think you may need.

Then, place each item into one of these categories:

  • Not required
  • Not applicable

AmoVee 2 in 1 Flat Iron – Dual Voltage

For example:

  • Do you need five hair styling products or can you choose just one? Use something like  this  2-in-1 curling/flat iron duo
  • Instead of razors and hair removal creams, how about a wax before your trip? I like no-heat strips like these
  • Can you leave behind your nail polish and get a gel manicure instead? Read this post on making your vacation nails last
  • Do you need several items to comb or brush your hair or can you use just one like this  foldable wet brush with a mirror?
Is it possible to temporarily hold off on using any products? If so, do it!

TRAVEL BEAUTY TIP:   Find out if your accommodation offers products such as shampoo, shower gel, hair dryer, etc. Some hotels even have additional complimentary items at reception such as razors, toothpaste, and other small essentials. Just ask!

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps

One of the best ways to minimize toiletries is to choose multi-use products or items.  Determine if there are any products you already own that can work double-duty. Choose between two products that serve the same purpose.

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps  and  Sea To Summit Wilderness Wash  are two of the most popular travel all-in-one travel products.

Other items to consider:

  • Is it possible to pack 4-in-1 facial cloths like these instead of taking face wash, scrub, and  makeup wipes?
  • Can you use a 2-in-1 shampoo plus conditioner like these ?
  • Would you consider a tinted moisturizer or BB cream? This one’s my fave.
  • Can you use your straightener as a curling iron? Better yet, choose a 2-in-1 curling/flat iron duo like this
  • Have you ever seen double ended makeup brushes? Save space with these

There are various multi-use products on the market, or you can use a few long-term travel hacks like I do, such as:

  • Baby powder as dry shampoo
  • Shampoo as shower gel (only for short periods of time)
  • Conditioner as shaving cream
  • Face scrub as body scrub
  • Body moisturizer to smooth hair flyaways

Nars Multiple | Eco Tools Brush Set

You’d be surprised at how many products can be used for multiple needs. Things like coconut oil  or other natural oils can be used as a body moisturizer, shave gel, and split end treatment! Tip: The best coconut oil is cold-pressed, unrefined, and good enough to eat.

There are also various multi-use makeup products  such as my all-time fave:  Nars The Multiple !

Read these tips on how to minimize toiletry products for even more tips!

Have you ever paid attention to how much shampoo you use? I only wash my hair every other day, so a 3 oz. travel size can last me a week!

How long is your trip? Make note of how much product you use for the duration of that time. Now that you know what items you absolutely have to pack, it’s time to determine how much of them you actually need.

Essentials such as shampoo, toothpaste, and moisturizers are particularly important. Don’t forget to test out bath, skincare, and makeup products. Make note so you can refer back when you’re ready to make the final plan.

Tip: avoid taking liquids in your carryon by replacing them with solid toiletries and travel wipes !

Editor’s Favorite Reusable Makeup Remover: Kiki & Josie

Once you have a better idea of what you actually need then consider other ways to downsize such as:

  • Instead of taking nail polish remover, can you take a few individual wipes like these instead?
  • Do you need an entire bottle of foundation or can you use a small container like this to take only what you will use?
  • Mini-nail polish bottles like these are a good choice, if you can’t stand chipped nails.
  • Read these travel makeup hacks for more ideas!

Skincare tends to be more personalized, but try not to bring more than three skincare items: a cleanser, treatment (for acne or wrinkles), and moisturizer. If you use a skincare system different from this one, try to cut it down to three products.

Empty Lip Gloss Balm Container

Choose appropriate travel containers. Many times, 3 oz bottles are too big for a one or two-week trip, so buy various sizes and take only the amount you will use.

Instead of immediately buying “travel-size” containers in 3oz or 100ml bottles, get a range of sizes including 1oz , 2oz , and smaller jars like these , too.

Tip: Replace glass containers with plastic to minimize weight and avoid breakage.

Read this post on the best travel containers  for more info!

Do a test run to see if everything fits in your toiletry bag. If your belongings don’t fit, consider using multi-use products such as a shampoo/conditioner combo, using conditioner as shaving cream, or baby shampoo for your hair and body.

Probably the biggest impact on my packing has been the tips to reduce and decant toiletries. I have followed this website and FB page for several years and the first thing I realized was that my toiletry footprint in my suitcase can be much smaller. This, in turn, makes for more room in small bathrooms (I typically cruise). Thanks for all your great info!!!

Vera Kozlowski

This is a great post, very helpful for thos of us that think we need to bring it all with us. Thank you for helping us travel lighter!

Sort of in the toiletries category, if traveling to South East Asia, I highly recommend getting a small pack of toilet seat covers and travel toilet paper (or carry tissues). No guarantee that there will be any available in locations other than your hotels. Otherwise, there is a hose with a spray handle for you to use, and that’s it. :0

This article has been a lifesaver as my toiletry bag is out of control! I learned many new ways of pairing it down and found some great containers to make that happen. The tips will also help my clear liquids bag be more manageable! Thank you for the great ideas.

I love all of these suggestions! I now have the flat-it pack it from eBags and also the lip balm containers which are genius! Thank you!

Lots of good tips, but beware of local restrictions when traveling; e.g., many African countries are very restrictive about plastics. Plastic bags are bad for the animals… If the plastic bag could be a 1-use bag, it might be prohibited even though you plan to use it multiple times during your trip. Some countries prohibit the shopping bags from the duty-free shops. There could be fines and imprisonment. Just a reminder to check restrictions in your designation country.

Alex

Very good point, thanks for sharing Dot!

Minimizing my toiletries and my toiletry case is the challenge I must overcome. I just came back from a 16 day trip to Austria. Individual zipper pouches not only create more bulk but also more weight. Reading your well written articles will assist me in this challenge.

Allison

I used those round clear jars on my last trip, but I couldn’t really get a grip on the lid and base to separate the two 🙁 I’m going back to using old empty jars of product and decanting into them instead.

I just want to thank Travel Fashion Girl and everyone that is part of this community for the inspiration and know-how for successful travel when abroad and also when dreaming from home. Taming toiletries remains a challenge! Using multi-purpose (lips, cheeks, eyes) make-up helps minimize make up, and sample sizes (like tiny mascara) are helpful, as is repotting items into much smaller containers versus buying travel sizes. Thanks for all the tips!

These tips saved me on my recent trip to Italy! Thanks for all of the great advice.

A packing list! I will totally use this and hope to whittle down further. Thank you for another great resource!

Nancy Willmore

I’m so scared to travel with a checked bag theses days and my toiletries are the thing that I was most concerned about fitting into a carry on. I love all the downsizing tips and can’t wait to use them for my next trip in October! Thanks Alex.

Sheila

I like shopping the travel size section in my drug store and at Target. I find lots of different size containers there. I sometimes buy items just for the containers and then fill them with my products.

Leanne

This post helped me so much when I was packing for my trip to France in April 2022. I think I was fairly successful in packing only the toiletries that I needed and was planning to check my bag, anyway. I also watched the video again when packing for a shorter trip to NY and was able to take even less toiletries on that trip! Thanks for all of your tips and tricks on safety too in the Paris 2022 Packing Guide!

Nadja Jackson

It’s amazing how little I actually need when I travel—I use lots of products but a tiny amount goes a long way and helps so much with both volume and weight. I decant into a combination of the tiny “lip gloss” tubes and have the tiny deodorant sticks as well for solids (perfect for using up the end of a large stick that wouldn’t have come out anyway). Feels good to not purchase more throwaway plastic for travel sizes since I just refill when I get home and then I’m ready for the next trip! Also I highly recommend lotion bars.

Lisa Bamburg

Oh my goodness! This has helped me so much. Packing my liquids was my number one worry about consolidating to a carry on.

Heather

What a helpful post! I’m just going to be traveling stateside, but this gave me some great ideas as our space is limited. Thanks TFG!

valerie mudrow

I have learned so many great ideas for decanting makeup etc. I now have lip gloss tubes, contact lens cases and travel size. It makes traveling so much easier – thank you!

Christine

We all have such different needs and non-negotiables, but this article really takes us through the steps to figure out what works for us. Using these tips (and with some trial runs) I’ve been able to get down to a small Sea To Summit toiletry bag. Still refining with each trip….

Sandra

Downsizing my toiletries is my biggest challenge! Thank you for these great tips.

Diane

Wow this information is so helpful. I will use many of these tips.

Simone

thank you for these tipps. I always feel very accomplished after I pack my clothes but than comes everything else, like toiletries and electronics and my backpack is bursting.

Sandra

Your suggestions and tips have been so helpful when preparing for an adventure. Thank you!

Anne

Every article you write is helpful, but packing toiletries is my biggest struggle. So thank you for this one!

Robin Polito

Using contact lens cases were a game changer on my recent Safari. We were limited to a soft -sided duffle and we wanted to carry on due to Heathrow so this was the way to go. It is amazing how much product fits in each case and how much product you actually use on a trip. I then used the cases on our recent road trip to Arizona. Never had a single spill either trip.

Fern Rabil

This is my all-time favorite post. Life -changing, making carry-on travel the only way to go now. Huge eye-opener!!!

Tracy Trencher Morra

This post is incredible. So much useful information! Thank you!

Karen

I have sliced up solid shampoo and conditioner bars into smaller pieces, to make ones the right size for a weeklong trip.

Katrina Gillett

Thanks for the list!

Vicki L Patterson

There is now available shampoo, conditioner, bodywash, soap, laundry detergent in sheet form, and mouthwash and toothpaste as tablets, lotions in bar form,

Hi Vicki, thank you for sharing your great toiletries tip with us! ?

We love solid toiletries and have a range of options here: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/solid-toiletries-for-travel/

Rick

One trick I found on the web that works great is to use contact lens cases. You can put a few days/week supply in them, mark them with a black sharpie, and put in your toiletry bag.

Hi Rick, thank you for sharing your great travel hack for packing your toiletries with us! Happy travels! ?

Barbara

Someone on your blog had mentioned she uses plastic paint cups from Michaels to put her make up in. What a great idea! I just purchased (16) 1/6 oz cups for $2 ( with 50% off coupon) and put my eye cream, under eye concealer, blush…. in them. They are awesome! And they are airtight, so the product won’t dry out! Thank you, whoever you are!

Wow, that is amazing Barbara, so happy to hear it worked so well with packing your toiletries!! Thank you for sharing! Happy Travels!

Jessica

I wear contacts and somehow have loads of extra contact cases. I use them for putting my face moisturizer, BB cream, salve (in case of cuts or infections) in for trips up to a week. I just use a sharpie to mark something on the outside of the case so I know what is inside.

Hi Jessica, thank you for sharing your great travel tip! 🙂

Elena Garcia

Love your tips! They have helped me to be a more confident traveler!

Gabriella

I do the same because I know how much I need for products compared to others.

Kay Lewis

Two products worth the money (and I’m a cheapo). Blinc mascara. Order online. It is water-proof and rub-proof. To remove, rub with fingers and warm water. No remover required.

ColoreScience sunblock, SP 50. It’s a powder, with the brush built in. No need to pack powder. And who re-applies gloppy lotion every 2 hours? My dermatologist says the best sunblock is the one you use.

Hi Kay, thank you so much for sharing your travel toiletries! 🙂

Sierra

🙂 sounds great! Thanks.

Connie

I have found that some doctors offices have small and very small bottles that you can get for free, if you ask nicely. One example is eye doctors, who have these bottles for sample eyedrops. I’ve gotten 6 in this way….for free. And they are the perfect size for travel!

Hi Connie, thank you so much for sharing your great travel tip for toiletries! 🙂

Travel Size Products: What to Know and Where to Find Them

By Happy Sharer

what is travel size products

Introduction

Traveling can be an exciting experience, but it can also be stressful if you’re not prepared. To ensure that your journey is comfortable and hassle-free, it’s important to pack the right items. Travel size products are becoming increasingly popular as they provide a convenient way to bring along essential items without taking up too much space.

Travel size products, also known as trial size or sample size products, are smaller versions of regular-sized items designed for convenience and portability. These items are typically packaged in bottles, tubes, containers, and other small packages, making them easy to carry in a suitcase or backpack. Travel size products are usually smaller than their full-size counterparts, but they often contain enough product for several uses, making them ideal for short trips.

Benefits of Travel Size Products

Benefits of Travel Size Products

The primary benefit of travel size products is that they allow travelers to take the items they need on the go without adding extra weight or bulk to their luggage. This is especially useful for travelers who are limited by airline restrictions on baggage size and weight. Additionally, travel size products are often cheaper than their full-size counterparts, so travelers can save money by purchasing them instead.

Furthermore, travel size products are a great way to reduce waste. According to a study conducted by the University of California Berkeley, “the average traveler produces about 4.4 pounds of trash per day, which is more than double the amount produced by non-travelers.” By using travel size items instead of full-size products, travelers can help reduce their environmental impact.

How to Maximize Space When Packing Travel Essentials

When packing for a trip, it’s important to maximize space in order to fit all of your essentials. Here are some tips for doing so:

1. Plan Ahead and Pack Light

Before leaving for your trip, plan out what items you will need and try to pack only the essentials. It can be helpful to create a list of items that you want to bring and then narrow it down to the most important ones. This will help you avoid overpacking and ensure that you have enough room for everything.

2. Utilize Multi-Purpose Items

Look for items that can serve multiple purposes. For example, a scarf can be used as a blanket or pillow, and a makeup bag can double as a jewelry pouch. In addition, look for items that can be folded or rolled up to save space.

3. Make Use of Space-Saving Bags and Containers

Investing in space-saving bags and containers can be a great way to maximize space when packing. Compression cubes, vacuum-sealed bags, and other such items can help you fit more items into your suitcase or backpack. Additionally, look for containers that can be reused, such as refillable travel bottles and jars.

Exploring the Different Types of Travel Size Products Available

Exploring the Different Types of Travel Size Products Available

Travel size products come in a variety of categories, ranging from toiletries to clothing and accessories. Here are some of the most common types of travel size items:

1. Toiletry Items

Toiletries are essential for any trip, and travel size items can be a great way to bring them along. Examples of toiletry items include shampoo and conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, deodorant, facial cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen.

2. Clothing and Accessories

Clothing and accessories can be bulky and take up a lot of space, so it’s important to pack only the items you will need. Examples of items to consider include socks, underwear, scarves, hats, and jewelry. Additionally, you may want to bring a few items that can be layered or mixed and matched to create different outfits.

3. Food and Drinks

Food and drinks are essential for keeping your energy levels up while traveling. Look for single-serving items such as snack bars, nuts, dried fruit, and energy drinks. Additionally, you can purchase reusable water bottles to save money and reduce waste.

Tips for Finding Affordable Travel Size Items

Travel size products can be expensive, so it’s important to shop around for the best deals. Here are some tips for finding affordable items:

1. Shop Online

Many online stores specialize in travel size products and offer discounts and free shipping for orders over a certain amount. Additionally, you can often find coupons and promo codes for further savings. Be sure to compare prices across different sites to get the best deal.

2. Seek Out Deals

Look for sales and promotions at your local drugstore and supermarket. Many stores offer discounts on travel size items, so it’s worth checking out. Additionally, you can often find coupons and other offers in magazines and newspapers.

3. Reuse Containers

If you’re looking for an even cheaper option, you can reuse containers from home. This is a great way to save money and reduce waste. Just make sure that the containers are clean and labeled properly before filling them with your desired products.

What to Look for when Buying Travel Size Products

When shopping for travel size products, it’s important to consider quality, ease of use, and brand reputation. Here are some things to keep in mind:

Make sure to read reviews and check the ingredients to ensure that the product is of high quality. Additionally, look for items that are formulated specifically for travel, as these will be more likely to meet your needs.

2. Ease of Use

Look for items that are easy to use and won’t take up too much space. For example, some products come in squeezable tubes or resealable bags that are easy to store and won’t leak.

3. Brand Reputation

It’s also important to consider the brand reputation when selecting travel size products. Look for brands that have positive reviews and a track record of providing reliable products.

Creative Ways to Make Use of Travel Size Products

Creative Ways to Make Use of Travel Size Products

Travel size products can be used for more than just short trips. Here are some creative ways to make use of them:

1. Bringing Samples

Travel size products are a great way to bring samples of your favorite products. You can use them to try out new products or give them away as gifts.

2. Using Trial Sizes

Trial sizes are perfect for testing out new products. If you’re curious about a certain product but don’t want to commit to a full-size version, you can purchase a travel size item to give it a try.

3. Creating Your Own Travel Kits

You can also create your own travel kits by combining travel size items. For example, you could put together a first aid kit or beauty kit with all the items you’ll need for your trip.

Travel size products are a great way to save time and space when packing for a trip. They are typically smaller and cheaper than their full-size counterparts, and they can help reduce waste. Additionally, there are many types of travel size items available, and they can be found online or at your local drugstore. When shopping for travel size products, make sure to consider quality, ease of use, and brand reputation. Finally, travel size products can be used in creative ways, such as bringing samples or creating your own travel kits. All in all, travel size products are a great way to make your next trip more enjoyable.

The Very Best Travel Products of 2023, According to T+L Editors

These are the luggage, clothing, and tech gadgets we were all about this year.

Travel + Leisure / Marcus Millan

As you might imagine, we Travel + Leisure editors do quite a bit of traveling each year. Journeys abroad, cross-country road trips, weekend beach vacations — we do it all, and we tend to test out new gadgets and gear every time we hit the road. Over the past year, a handful of items really stood out, so we decided to compile a comprehensive list.

From bags and beauty products to nifty gadgets like a foldable keyboard, these are the 19 products that impressed us the most through a year of frequent jet setting — and that we continue to recommend to anyone who will listen. We have a feeling once you try these, you’ll never leave home without them again either.

Cuyana Small Easy Zipper Tote

This tote has it all: it’s lightweight, secure, stylish, and perfectly pairs with interior pouches to up your organization game. Even without adding a pouch, plenty of gadgets and essentials can fit inside thanks to a spacious main compartment as well as an interior slip pocket and keychain strap. The Italian leather bag is soft to the touch and both looks and feels luxurious. Our favorite thing about it, though, is just how many options you have to choose from — it’s available in six colors, four sizes, and both zippered and zipperless styles.

“I prefer to rotate between a crossbody and a lightweight tote when traveling, and I was shocked by how light this leather zippered bag is at just over a pound,” associate editorial director Morgan Ashley Parker said. “Not only does the fully enclosed tote make me feel comfortable in crowds and on public transport, I love the snaps inside to rotate other pouches in, too. I’m eyeing the System Flap Bag and Adjustable Strap next so I can carry this tote crossbody style and also use the smaller pouch with the strap as a separate purse on my trips.”

Samsers Foldable Bluetooth Keyboard

It may surprise you to learn this keyboard isn’t just for your laptop or tablet — it’s also for your phone! Gone are the days of cramping fingers and thumbs after texting novels to friends back home about your trip. With this compact, folding keyboard that wirelessly connects to a phone (or other device) via Bluetooth, you can text just as easily as you’d type at your desk. It’s equipped with a magnetic closure, seamless hinge for folding, PU leather exterior, and sensitive touchpad in place of a mouse. It even comes with extras like a USB-C charging cable, adjustable folding stand, and velvet storage bag. When opened fully, the keyboard measures in at 13.4 by 4.6 inches, which is standard keyboard size.

“Anyone who’s tried to write anything more than a sentence or two on a smartphone has likely cursed those tiny keys and autocorrect a time or two,” Parker said. “I ordered this Bluetooth keyboard and now I rely on it when I’m texting a lengthy tale of my travel adventures and can use it with my tablet (or laptop!) for more significant work as well. I ordered four versions to compare before committing and found this one has the best keypad response and the PU leather made it feel sturdier and look a bit sleeker, too.”

Charmast Small Portable Charger

You won’t find a portable charger more subtle and stylish than this one from Charmast. Roughly the size of a tube of lipstick, this compact device is just as easy to transport as it is to use. Just toss it in your purse, carry-on, or pocket for quick access and simply plug into the bottom of your iPhone to begin charging. Its non-bulky design makes it easy to continue to use your phone while it works, and you can even charge both your phone and the charger itself at the same time by keeping them connected and plugging the charger into a USB-C cable and block. The best part? It comes in seven colors including pink, white, and blue.

“I went to a lot of stadium concerts this year so I made sure to stock up on the essentials for getting through long nights, and this little charger has been a true lifesaver,” writer Anna Popp said. “I also brought it with me on four international trips and it takes up virtually no room in a purse. I am the queen of leaving the house with a phone on low battery so this portable charger for my iPhone is easily the best money I've spent this year.”

Iioscre Small Sling Crossbody Bag

This is one of the most versatile bags around, and it’s proven itself to us all over the world this year. Its simple, mostly monochromatic design allows it to blend effortlessly in situations ranging from shopping to sightseeing to commuting. The bag is also lightweight, comfy to carry, and capable of housing a handful of items like a phone and charger, AirPods, a wallet, keys, and cosmetics. The affordable and adjustable purse comes in 12 colors, but we’re especially fond of the various shades of pink and green.

“I wanted a minimalist bag to bring to Asia with me and this budget-friendly one from Amazon was the perfect accessory,” Popp said. “It fits more than enough for a long day of sightseeing and it's super compact to fit in a suitcase or personal item without taking up much space. It's versatile enough to wear for both outdoor adventures and urban escapades so it's usually the first thing I pack before leaving for a trip now.”

Frye Veronica Combat Boot

Frye

If you’re looking for a pair of stylish and sturdy travel boots available in more than just run-of-the-mill black leather, consider ordering the Frye Veronica Combat Boots. They’re comfy enough to wear all day long and thanks to high-quality leather and rubber construction, they expertly glide over debris of all types. Waxed cotton laces stand up against moisture and mud, while a one-inch block heel and antiqued appearance add a hint of style. They come in eight unique colors and 13 sizes including half sizes.

“A travel writer friend of mine recommended these boots for safaris, and I'm so glad I took her advice,” digital editorial director Nina Ruggiero said. “I wore them all day for over a week — including on two walking safaris and four long haul flights — and they were comfortable, durable, and complimented all of my safari looks. I'll be taking them on outdoor adventures of all kinds from now on.”

Vuori Scout Jogger

These casual-yet-cute joggers are the travel pants you’ve been searching for. They’re so comfy that we’ve slept in them, but they remain stylish enough to wear to the airport, while exploring new towns, and straight off the plane to the office. They’ve never felt heavy or restrictive to us, and their abundant pockets make traveling, commuting, and running errands simpler than ever. You can snag them in two colors (army and dark salt) and sizes ranging from XXS to XXL.

“Like many SoCal residents, I live in Vuori’s activewear, but to me, these joggers are not for jogging,” Ruggiero said. “Instead, they’re the ultimate travel pant. The cargo look is definitely in right now, but it’s also practical — you can never have too many pockets on the go. Plus, these are comfortable, breathable, waterproof, and lightweight (but not too lightweight). I wore them on a 25-hour flying day and didn’t even need to change into pajamas for the overnight flight.”

Béis The Backpack

There are hundreds of travel backpacks on the market, but few impressed us as much as this one by Béis. It’s full of padded pockets and compartments (including a dedicated slot for a laptop), and it even has fun extras like a key hook and trolley sleeve to attach it to wheeled luggage. We’re also all about the comfy, cushioned straps: after a few particularly agonizing travels, slipping this backpack’s straps over our shoulders was like a breath of fresh air. There’s even a top handle for those who want to give their shoulders a break altogether. Grab this bag in six neutral hues including maple, beige, and navy.

“I used to only travel with a tote bag, but my go-to bag was sneakily giving me back and shoulder pain since it was so heavy to lug around,” editor Emily Belfiore said. “After a painful flight experience, I decided it was time to ditch it for a backpack, and I knew Béis would be the right brand for the job (I literally bought it in the cab on the way to my hotel from the airport). The Béis Backpack has a carry-on-style design with a spacious main compartment and compression straps. It also opens like a suitcase for easy packing, and there are two built-in pockets on the main flap that are perfect for toiletries, tech, and other tiny essentials. It’s so much more comfortable to carry and I feel like it makes my trip through TSA smoother — especially with its laptop pocket.”

Uniqlo Ultra Warm Long-Sleeve T-Shirt

Keeping a warm and cozy base layer in your travel wardrobe is wise no matter where you live — just take it from one of our Southern California-based editors. That’s why this breathable-yet-warm set from Uniqlo’s Heattech line is one of our favorites. It’s made of a comfy fabric blend that simultaneously locks in heat, wicks away moisture, and efficiently stretches to accommodate all types of movement. It’s even knit in a way that prevents snagging, and it’s quite soft to the touch. Pick it up in four colors ranging from off-white to brown.

“Living in LA, I really don’t have a lot of winter clothes,” Belfiore said. “But a recent trip to Big Bear made me realize I had to step up my base layer game, which is where the Uniqlo Heattech line came in very clutch. I sported the Ultra Warm Crew Neck Long-sleeve Top and leggings on a hike, while exploring the town, and while cozying up around the fire at our cabin. It really trapped in the heat and made me feel equipped for the chilly weather. I also picked up the line’s gloves and socks for the trip — and they were equally amazing.”

Shokz Open Run Headphones

These headphones are revolutionizing workouts for runners, hikers, and even travelers who simply like to listen to audio on the go. Not only do they stay put during high levels of activity, but they also offer quality sound without silencing the world around you. This is especially helpful for those looking to remain alert or have conversations while listening to their favorite music, podcasts, and audiobooks. The headphones are also waterproof and capable of holding a charge for eight hours — plus, feature a quick-charge mode that provides 1.5 hours of power from a 10-minute charge.

“I bought these bone conduction headphones for outdoor runs in NYC,” deputy photo editor Skye Senterfeit said. “They sit just above your ear and let you listen to music while still being able to hear what's happening around you, and others near you can't hear the sound. They've been great for runs but have also been a surprise hit for me for traveling too. When you're wearing them you can still easily hear safety demos, flight attendants asking you if you'd like almonds or cookies, or train and subway announcements. A tip: the mini size is bigger than the name would suggest, and might be the right fit for most people."

Fenty Beauty Blurring Skin Tint

We understand wanting to look put-together while traveling — but who wants to waste precious sightseeing time doing a full face of makeup? This Eaze Drop Blurring Skin Tint by Fenty has been a lifesaver for us this year because it evens skin tone with almost no effort at all. Unlike foundation, the light-coverage drops can be quickly and easily blended into the skin with the fingertips to cover small imperfections and discoloration. It’ll never look cakey or streaky, and it’s buildable for those days when you do want to layer more makeup on top. And in true Fenty fashion, it’s available in over two dozen shades.

“This skin tint is an easy way to simplify your makeup routine and a good way to look more alive when you're taking an early morning flight without having to slather on a full face of makeup,” testing editor Jackie Cucco said. “It's longwearing without being too thick or heavy. I usually wear it in place of foundation while traveling so that I don't have to pack extra makeup brushes.”

Alo Explorer Fanny Pack

Fanny packs are back in a big way, and we’ve enjoyed partaking in the trend this year with this sleek option from Alo. Forget the bulky, style-compromising fanny packs of yore — the Explorer is spacious yet subtle, structured, and lightweight enough to carry all day. It boasts two exterior pockets and one interior zip pocket to keep small items secure, plus the adjustable strap unclips completely for quick styling either around the waist or across the body. It comes in four monochromatic shades: black, ivory, fog, and espresso.

“I jumped on board the fanny pack train with this Alo bag, although I prefer to wear it as a sling bag,” Cucco said. “I like how compact it is, so you can keep your essentials close without taking up too much space, giving you easy access to your wallet and phone when you're out and about.”

Findcozy Toiletry Travel Bag

There are toiletry bags, and then there are hanging toiletry bags. We love this one from Findcozy — when hung up, it opens into four separate compartments, each with at least one pocket to store and separate your items. All of the compartments and pockets are either clear plastic or mesh so you can see what is in each of them. Plus, at 12.5 by 9 by 5.5 inches, the bag is large enough to store even your most sizable bottles and makeup palettes, yet it’s still small enough to easily pack into a suitcase. And, thanks to two durable top handles, carrying the bag on its own is equally as simple.

“I'm obsessed with this hanging toiletries travel case — I bring it on every single trip I go on,” editor Sophie Mendel said. “It has a ton of different compartments for everything from bandaids and medications to travel-sized shampoo and makeup remover wipes. It's an awesome one-and-done case to stick in your luggage and hang on any hook or door handle for easy accessibility to all your toiletries when you're on the road. It's a bit large (as I'm a chronic overpacker), but always makes me feel confident that I have everything I'll need while on a trip.”

Don Oehl Paris Print

There’s nothing like some fine art to elevate your space and bring back memories of your most cherished adventures when you're back home again. This year, we added this fun Paris print from artist Don Oehl to our collection. It’s not too busy or too abstract, and it’s a great conversation piece. At first glance, you may not even notice the hidden Eiffel Tower, but once you do, the print is sure to evoke Parisian daydreams.

"I love collecting art as my travel souvenirs and this vibrant print just makes me happy,” updates writer Taylor Fox said. “While it was actually made by an artist based out of New York, this print reminds me of the time I've spent in Paris, enjoying all of the fashion and architecture. It's so unique and can be paired with another beautiful travel print to add to a gallery wall or as a standalone piece.”

Birkenstock Boston Soft Footbed

These extra-comfy clogs are basically slippers you can wear outside, on errand runs, and even to work. They’re so soft that your feet will never feel sore in them, even after hours of wear. That’s thanks to their natural cork and latex footbed that provides superior cushioning and weight distribution, as well as a leather and suede upper that won’t rub uncomfortably against your foot. We love that they come in three colors and match with just about every outfit in our closets.

“After seeing these Boston Birkenstocks all over the internet and on the streets of New York City, I must've stepped into the Williamsburg storefront every day for an entire week waiting for them to be restocked,” writer Alexandra Domrongchai said. “And when they finally did, I immediately purchased a black pair and then proceeded to wear nothing but these shoes for the entirety of spring and summer. They go with absolutely everything in my wardrobe — whether that be a pair of joggers or jeans — and even with the temperatures dipping, they wear just as great with a pair of fleece-lined socks.”

Mystery Ranch Mission Stuffel 30L Bag

Backcountry

Here at T+L, we test a lot of luggage and bags each year. So when we say we loved one piece of luggage so much that we used it all year, it’s kind of a big deal. The Mystery Ranch Mission Stuffel 30L Bag came with us pretty much everywhere this year, from journeys across the world to short road trips. The bag can be carried as a duffel or backpack, and it’s able to fit several day’s worth of clothes. It features small interior pockets, tear- and abrasion-resistant nylon, and a horseshoe zipper opening to help you see everything inside. On top of that, it’s reinforced in areas that may wear quickly, so you’re sure to have this bag for years.

“I picked up this bright-orange duffel in preparation for a safari in Kenya, and it was the perfect frame-free luggage for hopping in and out of small planes and Land Cruisers,” news director Paul Brady said. “What's surprised me, though, is that I now use it for almost every trip, even quick weekend getaways closer to home. It's big enough to hold a ton but squishy enough that you can slip it through as a carry on. I also like the separate pocket for things like boots, swimsuits, or whatever else, that helps keep things tidy.”

Glossier Ultralip High Shine Lipstick

Imagine hydrating your lips after a longhaul flight and adding color and shine in a matter of about ten seconds. Believe it or not, it’s possible with Glossier’s High Shine Lipstick With Hyaluronic Acid, which we’ve used countless times this year. The feel-good lip product — which is part lipstick, part balm, and part gloss — is lightly tinted, allowing users to quickly swipe it on for some color without worrying about applying it perfectly. It’s a must-have for travelers and those who enjoy looking good, but often don’t have much time to dedicate to their appearance. Grab it in nine colors ranging from soft peony pink to deep mauve.

“After years of hearing people rave about Glossier makeup, I finally bought the brand’s High Shine Lipstick With Hyaluronic Acid this year, and it’s become a travel go-to,” associate editor Hillary Maglin said. “It’s surprisingly pigmented for what is essentially a tinted lip balm, but it’s also one of those no-precision-needed lip products, so I can slap some on without even using a mirror (which is perfect for plane seats and train cars). I have the dusty rose shade, and it does an awesome job of providing subtle color, moisture, and shine. If I’m lucky, I can even skip regular lip balm when I’ve got this on hand.”

Zuihug Travel Pill Case

Traveling with pills can be a pain, especially if you’ve packed several different kinds. Leave your large, cumbersome pill organizers at home and transfer your medications and vitamins to a travel pill case when you hit the road. Zuihug’s 10-compartment Travel Pill Case has the space to secure dozens of pills, yet it folds up into a compact case small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. It easily slips right into carry-ons and personal item bags, and it comes in transparent colors like blue, pink, gray, and more.

“This compact little pill organizer is such an improvement on the bulky cases I've used in the past,” senior editor Lydia Price said. “There are ten separate compartments of various sizes, so it's easy to fit bigger pills like my hair supplements and vitamins while keeping smaller medications tidy. I'm one of those travelers who basically brings an entire pharmacy with them wherever they go, and this has made it effortless to pack everything from prescriptions to melatonin in virtually any bag.”

NYX Professional Makeup Epic Ink Liner

Got a long travel day ahead of you? Don’t risk looking like a raccoon by the time you reach your destination — just apply NYX’s Epic Ink Waterproof Eyeliner before you leave. This eyeliner has serious staying power thanks to its matte, waterproof formula, so wherever you apply it is where it’ll stay for the next several hours. We also appreciate that, unlike many other liquid eyeliners that require MUA-level precision and skill, the Epic Ink eyeliner glides onto lids and creates clean lines with minimal effort. Plus, it’ll hold up through torrential downpours, swimming, and skiing.

“I've tried a ton of different eyeliners from all over the price spectrum, and nothing has impressed me more than this drugstore buy,” Price said. “The tip is so fine and precise that even a shaky-handed gal like myself can get a nice thin line. With my video work for T+L, I have to feel confident in front of the camera everywhere from snowy ski slopes to scorching-hot beaches, and this eyeliner is actually waterproof enough to get the job done every time. It doesn't even budge when I fully submerge my head.”

Skyroam Solis Lite

It’s always a good idea to have a little Wi-Fi boost on hand. If you’re searching for the perfect compact device to bring on your travels, look no further than the Simo Solis Lite Hotspot. This hockey-puck-sized device majorly increases the speed of your Wi-Fi connection nearly anywhere in the world if there is a network nearby. It’s small enough to fit in virtually any purse, backpack, or suitcase, and it makes working or browsing the internet a breeze. To top it off, we’re obsessed with its bright orange exterior!

“I took this hotspot on a five-city trip around India and to Japan this year,” Price said. “It's truly a tiny powerhouse that provides lightning-fast Wi-Fi in all but the most remote locations. It connects to the fastest cell signal in any given area, so I'm free to use my phone and laptop as long as there is some type of network around, and I have just as good of service as the locals do anywhere I go. Simo also has a flexible, generous data plan, with users getting 250 megabytes for free each month and their choice of day passes, monthly subscriptions, and pay-per-gigabyte options after that.”

Why Travel-Size Products Are Beauty’s Hottest Trend

what is travel size products

If beauty products have been looking smaller to you lately, your eyes do not deceive you. From body wash to bronzer, products are shrinking in size, making trying new brands and traveling with them that much easier.

This new size is not about gimmicks or TSA guidelines, in fact it’s presenting a new way of using products so that we actually finish them before they expire and can easily bring them along on our increasingly mobile lives. “Travel size has become a way of life in beauty,” says Julie Bell, Executive Vice President of Global Marketing for Benefit Cosmetics. “It gives women the opportunity to try a product they might not normally buy with minimum investment. In many cases, we see women buying the regular size for home and the mini size for their purse. Everyone is on the go, and travel-sized makeup solves a beauty dilemma.”

Mobility is a major factor in the rise of travel-size items. One can feasibly purchase a few sets of travel-sized products at a fraction of the price of regular-sized ones to keep in a purse, car or desk for touch ups or on-the-go application. “It’s a set of intersecting trends,” says Julie Fredrickson, founder of Stowaway Beauty, a brand launched this past February with six products, all approximately one ounce each. “Our lives have changed so much, more people are freelancing and don’t go into an office the way you used to. The constancy of doing your makeup at home isn’t the same. Beauty is becoming more mobile because women are so mobile.”

In addition to being more mobile, women are more conscious and educated consumers who understand they are in a position to dictate how and what they buy. In the case of smaller beauty, simplicity, convenience and quality over quantity have helped perpetuate the trend forward. “It’s hard for people to conceive that the beauty industry got it wrong,” says Fredrickson about the size of traditional products. “It’s entirely possible that in 10 to 15 years this will be the norm. The industry will recognize women want to carry less and have more value.”

Beauty is becoming more mobile because women are so mobile.

Sephora stores have seen a significant uptick in the sales and interest in travel-size beauty, even changing their Beauty To Go section of the store to Beauty On The Fly to better help shoppers navigate the assortment and various categories. “At Sephora, we find our travel-sized beauty business is booming for two specific reasons,” says Beth Hayes, VP of Merchandising for Sephora Collection. “First, it’s very important for our client to be able to take their favorite products with them when they travel so they feel comfortable and can stick to their routine. The second reason minis are so popular—particularly in prestige—is that it allows our client to try a product without making a full-size commitment. Not everyone is willing to purchase a full size if they haven’t sampled the product, so miniature versions are a safe way to try new things.”

Hayes says the top-selling travel-size categories at Sephora are makeup applicators, masks, hair, moisturizer, lip balm, primer and setting spray. Top products include Bumble & bumble Don’t Blow It 2oz, Kat Von D Tattoo Liner (mini version), Fresh Sugar Lip Petites, and Make Up For Ever Mist & Fix 1.01oz.

Sephora Favorites

Don’t Blow It Hair Cream

Sephora’s in-house line of products has also expanded to include a more robust travel-size offering, including sheet masks, eye masks, lip liner and mascara. Call it travel or trial size, it’s a category Fredrickson and her company refer to as “right sized.” “Right sized means products you’ll actually finish before they expire, because you shouldn’t buy anything you won’t use,” she says. “Also consider how they fit into your busy life—products should be portable.”

LA-based Arcona spa has also gotten into the miniature market, making travel-size sets to house their natural skincare products. And countless other companies have gotten on board as well—in addition to Stowaway, 3FLOZ and Pinch Provisions are brands solely dedicated to creating smaller sizes.

So if size is at the center of this entire movement, why couldn’t everyone just decant their favorite lotions, shampoos and foundations into smaller containers?

Firstly, not everything is easily transferrable, namely lipstick, eye shadow and most cosmetics. Secondly, many items—especially non-toxic beauty and those with minimal preservatives—must be stored in specific types of containers so that they remain effective. “I am the queen of decanting—I decant everything,” says celebrity makeup artist and founder of online beauty retailer Reed Clarke Fiona Stiles. “But sometimes the product comes in a glass bottle because it needs to be in one, and if you decant it, the product gets ruined (same for a dark bottle when a product is light sensitive), so it's better if it comes from a manufacturer in the packaging it's meant to come in—just more petite!”

The definition of luxury is changing, especially as we are increasingly busy and have much more on our plates. I don’t care how much money you have, you can’t buy time.

It seems counterintuitive, particularly when it comes to beauty and fashion, but in the case of travel-size products it’s what’s not there that’s making this trend into a thoroughly modern one. “Times are changing,” says Fredrickson of why the convenience and mobility of travel-size beauty is the reason the category is growing exponentially. “The definition of luxury is changing, especially as we are increasingly busy and have much more on our plates. I don’t care how much money you have, you can’t buy time.”

Seven Things You Didn’t Know Come in Travel Size

O ne of the quirks about travel is how your whole world shrinks—time gets short, airplane seats are smaller than ever , and many of the everyday products you use suddenly become “travel size.” You might be surprised, though, to discover just how many travel size products there actually are out there—heck, there’s an entire “superstore” dedicated to travel size products called Minimus , where you can find just about anything you need in tiny, adorable portions.

While most of us know you can find plenty of food, toiletries, and other basics in travel sizes, the wonders of the free market mean you can find some pretty surprising things designed to fit in your luggage. Here are several things you probably didn’t know come in travel size.

CPAP machines

If you suffer from sleep apnea or another breathing disorder and you regularly use a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine when you sleep, you know how difficult it is to travel with a bulky machine, and how much room it takes up in your luggage. Lucky for you, there are a lot of travel-sized options out there, like the ResMed AirMini . Approved for use on airplanes, this tiny unit is packed with useful features and is surprisingly quiet, so you won’t bother folks on the plane or in a shared hotel room. It’s not cheap, but if you travel a lot, it’s a great investment.

Musical instruments

If you’re a musician, you know that traveling with larger instruments can be a nightmare. Every few years the news reports another valuable instrument absolutely destroyed by airline , airport , or TSA employees, and shipping carries similar risks with additional costs. But if you just need a way to practice or simply enjoy playing and miss it when you have to leave home, the good news is that you can find a pretty wide variety of instruments in travel-size versions. There’s the Pocket Piano , which has a modular design that transforms from a small square to a full-size keyboard in moments, or the Hofner Shorty electric guitar, which offers a full-scale playing experience in a tiny little instrument.

Cocktail kits

Air travel can really cut into your cocktail hour—even if you have the time to relax with a drink, you’re often limited to whatever the flight crew can provide. But with a travel size cocktail kit (or three) you can enjoy just about any cocktail you like, from a Moscow mule to a mint julep, a mojito to an old fashioned. All you need to supply is the alcohol, and the kit provides everything else you need to keep it classy even in the cramped conditions of economy.

Coffee makers and kettles

Coffee, tea, and other hot drinks are usually pretty easy to find when you travel, but the costs can add up if you’re constantly grabbing to-go cups—plus, the quality of your beverages may not be quite what you’re used to. But you can actually pack your own espresso maker with the tiny-but-powerful Nanopresso , which requires nothing more than coffee and hot water to produce surprisingly terrific coffee. You can also find collapsible travel kettles that will let you brew up tea, hot chocolate, or any other warm beverage you’d like—and it squashes down and fits inside your luggage without a problem.

If you work out and travel a lot, you know the horrors of hotel gyms: lack of equipment, broken machines, or a crowd of people elbowing each other in irritation. But did you know you can actually pack weights to bring with you for an in-room workout? These travel dumbbells are a simple concept: Plastic weights you fill with water, offering up to 45 pounds of resistance in each one. Empty, they’re light and thin and fit easily into luggage or carry-on bags, and all you need to get a good workout is access to water.

White noise machine

Have trouble sleeping, especially in strange beds? Religiously use a white noise machine at home? Good news: You can buy travel size white noise machines like the Yogasleep Rohm —it’s tiny, but it sports great battery life and offers soothing white noise to block out the world. It comes with a strap that makes it easy to hang on your luggage or the seat in front of you, but can also be placed on a nightstand next to your bed to ensure a peaceful atmosphere and your best chance of getting some rest.

Clothes iron

No matter how careful while packing up your luggage, the chances that you’ll be spending your morning trying to steam your outfit in the hotel bathroom are not zero. While some hotels provide an iron in the room, that’s not always an option—but you can buy a travel-size iron that fits snugly in your bag, ready to be deployed at a moment’s notice.

These Backpacks and Duffels Meet Frontier and Spirit Airlines’ Strict Personal Bag Rules—and They’re Under $35

These bags might be small, but shoppers are amazed by how much they can fit inside.

what is travel size products

Real Simple / Daisy Rodriguez

I absolutely love to travel anywhere and everywhere, and I get so excited when it’s finally time to start packing for a trip . Even though I’m always excited for my vacations to start, the one thing (other than flying) that causes the most anxiety for me is fearing that Frontier will flag my backpack for its size (even though that’s never happened to me—anxiety rarely makes sense). If you also have upcoming trips where you’re flying with Frontier Airlines or Spirit Airlines, I thought I would flag five personal bags that meet both airlines’ tricky size requirements that you can scoop up. And they’re all under $35 at Amazon.

According to Frontier Airlines , personal bags “can be no larger than 14 inches tall, 18 inches wide, and 8 inches long.” The key thing to keep in mind is the bag you bring with you must fit under your seat and within the airlines’ “bag sizer.” Spirit Airlines requires that bags meet the same sizing requirements as Frontier Airlines, but they also note that the inches allowed include “handles and wheels.” And both airlines will measure bags they’re questioning. I’ve watched fellow travelers have to pay hefty fines at the gate because their personal bag is too large for the metal sizer and is instead categorized as a carry-on.

Thankfully, there’s an easy way to skip the bag size stress, and it’s by purchasing any of the five Amazon options highlighted below. Each backpack or duffel will pass the sizing test of both airlines as long as you keep one thing in mind: Don’t overstuff your bag.

Narwey Packable Duffel Bag

The Narway duffel is available in a whopping 43 colors and patterns, and it’s an Amazon shopper-favorite with nearly 15,300 perfect ratings and 2,100 five-star reviews . It measures 18 inches by 13 inches by 6.3 inches, so neither Frontier nor Spirit will stop you to confirm its size (or if they do, you’ll know you’ll pass the test just fine). You can pack the bag with up to 45 pounds of essentials, according to the brand, and it’s even waterproof. Plus, it has a smaller zippered front pouch, which is a great spot to store your phone or passport to keep both safe and within easy reach. “If you're searching for the perfect personal item for airlines like Spirit, this bag is an absolute winner. With its ideal size, durability, functionality, and stylish design, it ticks all the boxes for a travel bag that seamlessly fits within the airline's restrictions while still providing ample storage space,” wrote one reviewer .

Wandf Foldable Duffel Bag

Similar to the duffel mentioned above, the Wandf bag also meets Frontier and Spirit Airlines’ personal bag requirements because it’s 17.7 inches by 12.6 inches by 6.3 inches. It also has a front zippered pocket to keep must-haves safely tucked away, and the brand points out that it’s made from nylon for extra durability. The weekender also boasts a travel sleeve on the bag that you can easily use to slide it onto a suitcase handle. And you can fold it up when you’re not using it, which makes it easy to put away after traveling. The duffel has nearly 11,000 five-star ratings and almost 1,700 perfect reviews . “I used it for a week trip to Florida and fit all my clothes and shoes,” said one reviewer , while another shopper added that their loved one borrowed the duffel and called it a “Mary Poppins bag” because they could fit so much inside.

Matein Laptop Backpack

“Most recently, I was able to carry two days of clothes, laptop, make-up bag, two small purses, [and] a denim jacket, and still had plenty of space to store things,” wrote one shopper who has flown on Frontier and Spirit Airlines with the Matein laptop backpack. It’s the top-seller in Amazon’s Laptop Backpacks category with 79,000 perfect ratings and a whopping 16,900 five-star reviews , and it’s available in 17 colors. The backpack measures 18 inches by 12 inches by 7.8 inches, and it has three separate zippered compartments and a luggage sleeve on the back. The laptop sleeve accommodates a 15.6-inch computer, the open middle compartment is ideal for clothes, and the smaller front pocket can easily hold your phone, tablet or Kindle, headphones, and additional small essentials. The other bonus about the backpack is it has a built-in external USB port, which you can use to connect your phone and external battery for on-the-go charging.

Wonhox 16.9-Inch Travel Backpack

Packing a backpack can feel like a game of Tetris because the zipper rarely goes all the way down, but this personal bag solves that problem. The main zipper goes around the perimeter of the bag to allow you to open it completely, which is such a packing game changer. It measures 16.93 inches by 11.8 inches by 7.9 inches, and it even includes a laptop compartment for up to a 14-inch computer. You’ll also find additional zipper pockets inside the main section, as well as a separate shoe compartment and a smaller front pocket. Most importantly, shoppers love it and have awarded the backpack with 8,200 perfect ratings and nearly 1,700 five-star reviews . “I love this backpack! There are so many hidden pockets,” shared one shopper who packed five days worth of items inside for a trip. Plus, they confirmed that the bag is approved for Frontier Airlines flights.

Lovevook 15.6-Inch Travel Backpack

I love when backpacks look and feel elevated, and the multi-tone design and shape of this bag checks those boxes. It’s made from polyester and faux leather, and it’s 16.7 inches by 11.4 inches by 5.7 inches to stay in line with Frontier and Spirit Airlines’ personal bag size requirements. You’ll find an impressive five compartments and 19 pockets, including an anti-theft slot inside the bag, according to the brand, and it can fit up to 15.6-inch laptop safely inside. “This is my new ‘everything’ bag! It is great for work, for a weekend trip, or packing up for a full-day outing,” said one five-star reviewer . They mentioned that they appreciate how many pockets the bag includes, and they also like that “the bag stands solidly upright,” which is something they feel other options “lack,” and they’ve “relieved many compliments on it,” too. Plan to choose your favorite from 10 color combinations.

Many personal bags on Amazon are priced under $35 and offer plenty of storage and spots to safely stow away laptops. So, pick up a new bag and spend your energy feeling excited about your travels rather than worrying about your personal bag meeting Frontier Airlines’ and Spirit Airlines’ respective strict requirements.

The best packing cubes to save space and keep you organized

These travel cubes will keep your suitcase in order, whether you’re going on a short getaway or a round-the-world adventure.

Whether you’re packing for a weekend getaway or planning an around-the-world adventure, packing cubes can help streamline the packing process. Packing cubes are bags that come in different sizes in a set. They can help organize clothing and save room in your suitcase. After talking to King, we compared packing bags, looking for durable travel cubes with functional designs and a wide variety of sizes. Our top overall pick is the Gonex Compression Packing Cubes. Compression zippers, handles, and a low price tag make this set the best all around.

Why we like it:   The Gonex Compression Packing Cubes are our choice for the best overall packing cubes. Despite being one of the more affordable travel cube sets on this list, these compression bags have plenty of features, including ripstop nylon, reinforced seams, and handles. They compress via double zippers that pull the edges of the travel packing bag together. The packing cubes can hold everything from socks to jackets and are designed to fit together like puzzle pieces. They’re also available in over 10 colors.

Keep in mind:   These packing cubes unzip only halfway, so you have to stuff your clothes inside rather than lay them flat. Some reviewers note that the compression zippers are difficult for people with arthritis or reduced mobility.

Why we like it: At 4.2 ounces, the Eagle Creek Pack-It Isolate Cube Set is half the weight of other packing cubes on this list, but they’re far from flimsy. They’re made of ripstop polyester and have “self-repairing” zippers—if a gap opens in the chain, you can slide one of the zippers over it to close it. Eagle Creek also offers a warranty that covers fabric tears and zippers. Because they’re lightweight and sturdy, these travel cubes are great for hikers and campers who want to organize their backpacks.

Keep in mind: The set includes only three smaller-sized travel cubes. While great for backpacks and carry-ons, you may want bigger packing cubes for checked luggage.

Product details: Size:   3-piece set: 4.5 x 7.5 x 2.5 inches (extra small), 7.25 x 10 x 3.25 inches (small), and 10 x 14.25 x 3.25 inches (medium) | Material:   Ripstop polyester | Weight:   4.2 ounces (set)

Best for overpackers: REI Co-op Expandable Packing Cube Set

what is travel size products

Buy it now at   REI

Why we like it:   The packing cubes in the REI Co-op Expandable Packing Cube Set are the opposite of compression bags. Each cube has a second zipper that, when unzipped, increases its width to six inches—double the size of other packing bags on this list. They’re designed to last with ripstop polyester treated with a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish. The packing cubes also meet the Bluesign criteria, the highest environmental standard for sustainable textile manufacturing.

Keep in mind:   REI Co-op recently updated its packing cubes, and some buyers believe the quality has suffered as a result. Third-party reviews mention thin material, unreinforced zippers, and mesh that snags.

Product details: Size:   3-piece set: 8 x 6 x 3 inches (small), 12 x 8 x 3 inches (medium), and 14.5 x 10.5 x 3 inches (large) | Material:   Ripstop nylon, polyester mesh | Weight: 8.3 ounce (set)

Best upcycled option: Cotopaxi Cubo Packing Cube Bundle

what is travel size products

Why we like it:   The brightly colored Cotopaxi Cubo Packing Cube Bundle is an upcycled option you can feel good about. The packing bags are made of 100-percent repurposed nylon and mesh. Kayli King likes that the mesh panels allow your things to air out and that you can hang them up by their handles.

Cotopaxi’s sustainability initiatives extend beyond its packing cubes. The company says that 94 percent of its products use repurposed, recycled, or responsible materials. They also offer programs to repair items and trade them in to avoid landfills.

Keep in mind:   Despite its competitive price, this bundle comes with only three packing cubes. The size range is small compared to other packing cube sets. However, King prefers this set for longer trips.

Product details: Size: 3-piece set: 7 x 8 x 2 inches (2-liter bag), 6 x 11.5 x 3 inches (3-liter bag), 10 x 11.5 x 5 inches (10-liter bag) | Material:   100 percent repurposed nylon and mesh | Weight: 9 ounces (set)

Best style: Calpak Packing Cubes Set

what is travel size products

Buy it now at   Calpak

Why we like it:   While many packing cubes seem to favor function over fashion, the Calpak Packing Cubes Set balances both. The packing bags come in over 20 colors, with patterns like “cheetah” and “lime viper.” They’re durable, with thick polyester sides and mesh covers that let you see inside. Each packing cube has a zippered pocket for smaller essentials and an ID tag to write down the contents. If five travel cubes aren’t enough, you can buy additional Calpak travel organizers, like shoe bags and laptop totes.

Keep in mind:   The Calpak Packing Cube set is by far the heaviest and most expensive option on this list. You may want lighter packing cubes if you travel with just a carry-on or are concerned about overweight luggage.

Product details: Size:   5-piece set: 13 x 10 x 1.5 inches (envelope), 12 x 8.8 x 3 inches (small x 2), 5 x 11 x 3 inches (medium), 17 x 12 x 3 inches (large) | Material: Polyester and mesh | Weight: 1 pound, 12.8 ounces (set)

Best set: Tripped Checked Bag Set

what is travel size products

Why we like it:   The Tripped Checked Bag Set has a travel cube for almost every packing need. The set includes seven packing bags, including two extra large sizes, a slim cube, a shoe bag, and a roll-top laundry bag. Mix and match the travel cubes to fit your suitcase and packing needs. Most of the packing cubes in the Checked Bag Set also have a compression feature. Plus, they come in a wide range of colors and an illustrated set featuring national parks.

Keep in mind:   While the packing cubes are made from a ripstop blend, reviewers mention that the material and stitching feel thin and flimsy. Some of the travel cubes don’t unzip all the way, making packing more difficult.

Product details: Size: 6-piece set: 12.5 x 6.5 x 6.5 inches (shoe bag), 12.5 x 4.5 x 3 inches (slim cube), 21 x 11.5 x 0.1 inches (laundry bag), 10 x 7 x 4 inches (small), 14 x 10 x 4 inches (large), 16 x 12 x 4 inches (extra large x 2) | Material:   Ripstop nylon-polyester blend | Weight:   15.5 ounces (set)

Best budget: Veken 6 Set Packing Cubes

what is travel size products

Why we like it: The Veken 6 Set Packing Cubes come with six packing cubes, including a laundry bag and a shoe bag. They cost less than half the price of most other packing bag sets on this list. The low price doesn’t mean low quality, though. The Veken 6 Set Packing Cubes are made of thick polyester, with sturdy zippers and mesh panels to help keep clothes fresh. Plus, they come in 12 colors.

Keep in mind: The laundry and shoe bags are small. The polyester is not ripstop and can melt if dried on high heat.

Product details: Size: 6-piece set: 4.7 x 17 inches (shoe bag), 14 x 20 inches (laundry bag), 11 x 6.75 x 4 inches (small), 13.75 x 9.75 x 4 inches (medium), 13.75 x 12.75 x 4 inches (large), 17.5 x 12.15 x 5 inches (extra large) | Material:   Polyester | Weight:   10.4 ounces (set)

How we chose the best travel packing cubes

We weighed the following qualities when curating the best packing cubes:

Third-party reviews:   We considered reviews from sources other than company websites and spoke with seasoned travelers to find out what they liked.

Brand reputation: Anything you use for traveling should be functional, long-lasting, and, preferably, good for the planet. We looked for brands that value high-quality gear and sustainability.

Quality of material:   We chose travel cubes that were made to last, with durable materials like ripstop nylon and polyester, reinforced seams, and strong zippers.

Size range: Different-sized packing bags make for an easier packing experience. We chose packing cube sets in a range of sizes, from extra small to extra large.

Compression options: Some packing cube brands offer compression bags, which can be a nice feature if you’re tight on space.

Tips for buying packing bags

Here’s what to consider when picking your own packing cubes:

Brand reputation

Choose a trusted brand with a proven reputation. Brands with zipper and fabric warranties or repair programs will also help you get as many vacations as possible with your travel organizers.

If you only use carry-ons or smaller luggage, choose a packing cube set with fewer, smaller travel cubes. If you prefer to use checked luggage, go for a packing cube set with more travel cubes and bigger sizes.

If you travel with just a carry-on or want to use packing cubes for hiking, choose an ultralight packing cube set. Every ounce counts when packing light, and some travel cube sets are nearly 1.5 pounds lighter than others.

Packing cubes are typically made of polyester or nylon, both strong synthetic fabrics. If you need something even more durable, look for ripstop nylon or polyester, which has extra threads to prevent tears from becoming bigger.

Some brands offer compression bags, which can save space. However, King finds that compressed bags can be awkwardly shaped, making them harder to fit together in your suitcase. If you are a heavy packer, travel cubes for shoes or laundry can help keep the rest of your luggage clean.

Frequently asked questions

Are packing cubes worth it?

Packing cubes can help save space in your suitcase and improve organization, reducing stress while traveling.

Does TSA allow packing cubes?

How many packing cubes do you need for a suitcase?

How much does a packing cube cost?

The packing cube sets recommended here cost between 20 and 70 dollars. Some companies may sell individual packing cubes for less.

Alaska cruise packing list: 36 must-have items.

Your cruise packing list for Alaska will look a little bit different than the one you'd use for the Caribbean.

Alaska Cruise Packing List

what is travel size products

Getty Images

Stay warm and dry in Alaska by ensuring you've packed the right gear.

Alaska is one of the most stunning places to visit on Earth. The vast pristine wilderness, ever-changing landscapes and opportunity to view wildlife – including bear, moose, Dall sheep, caribou, wolves, and marine mammals such as orcas and humpback whales – are just a few of the reasons it's one of the most popular cruise destinations.

An Alaska cruise , however, can be difficult to pack for with big swings in temperatures, rainy days in the forecast and even experiencing four seasons in one day ashore. You'll need a strategic plan to pack for your trip especially if you're cruising during the colder months of April and October at the tail ends of the Alaska cruising season . U.S. News has compiled a list of essential items and ones you'll be glad you brought to round out your cruise packing list.

  • For the cabin
  • For the ship and onshore excursions
  • For the journey

(Note: Any mentioned prices were accurate at the time this article was published; they may fluctuate.)

For the cabin

Portable humidifier.

It gets cold in Alaska, especially at nighttime, so you may need to turn on the heat in your stateroom. If you've traveled in the winter on a cruise ship, you'll know that the dry warm air combined with the airtight seal in the cabin can cause several issues, including difficulty sleeping and dry skin. The MOVTIP Portable Mini Humidifier ( less than $30 on Amazon ) is compact and lightweight at 9.5 ounces, so you can easily pack it into your carry-on or checked luggage . It has two mist modes, acts as a nightlight in your cabin and has an automatic shut-off when the water level is too low.

Magnetic hooks

A fun fact: The walls of a cruise ship are made of metal, so you can use them for extra hanging space when you bring along magnetic hooks for the trip. There are plenty of plain silver magnets on Amazon to choose from, but DIYMAG heavy-duty magnetic hooks are available in bold colors like green, red and purple. That way, each person can have their own color-coded hook. The extra hanging space will come in handy with all the layers you'll need for your cruise. You'll also appreciate having the hooks for wet gear after shore excursions .

Motion sickness remedies

Sea-Bands pack and bands in case against white background.

Sea-Bands, which you can find on Amazon for less than $15 , are a must-have item if you're prone to motion sickness. A drug-free alternative to medicines like Dramamine, they use an acupressure point to minimize nausea and vomiting. You never know when you'll encounter rough seas, especially if you're on a small vessel . You can even get motion sickness riding in one of the whale watching boats, so it's best to come prepared. Be sure to start wearing the bands before you get on the ship.

If you need something stronger than the Sea-Bands to quell the nausea, Dramamine has a less drowsy version that's recommended by pharmacists. Another motion sickness alternative is to wear the prescription scopolamine transdermal patch, which lasts up to three days, behind your ear. Ginger chews are an option for mild cases of upset stomach; you can purchase a pack of them on Amazon for $5 .

It's a good idea to keep moisturizing eye drops in your toiletry bag , backpack or handbag, especially if you're prone to dry eye. The cabins on the ship can get warm and arid, as mentioned above, particularly when you need to turn on the heat. Systane on-the-go vials are an excellent choice for hydration. Lumify is another option if your eyes have a problem with redness.

Alaskan cruises are a once-in-a-lifetime trip for many travelers, so you'll want to record every moment of your adventure. Rifle Paper Co. sells sets of three stitched notebooks with beautiful floral and nature designs. Each book has 64 ruled pages and gold foil accents. There's even a Bon Voyage-themed set that's perfect for journaling your cruise travels.

Wrinkle release spray

Travel irons are not permitted on cruise ships, so a travel-size bottle of Downy's Wrinkle Release Plus spray comes in handy for getting rid of wrinkles. It also acts as an odor eliminator and static remover. To remove wrinkles, it works best if you spritz the garment first and then hang it in the shower so the steam can work its magic, too. For tougher wrinkles in fabrics like linen, you might need to send the garment out for pressing. If you do, be sure to give it at least a 24-hour turnaround time if you're planning to wear the item on a specific evening.

Travel-size bathroom sprays

There are several companies that make travel-size bathroom sprays, including Poo-Pourri, Fresh Wave and Flushie. They are all available on Amazon. If you prefer aromas beyond the traditional lavender vanilla and citrus scents, Poo-Pourri sells its 2-ounce packable sprays in pumpkin spice, apple, coconut and more.

Over-the-door organizer

It's best to stay organized when you're on a cruise, especially if you're not traveling solo . Storage space is limited in the closet and in the bathroom, so you'll want to keep your items separate. An over-the-door organizer, such as Bagsmart's hanging toiletry bag ( less than $30 on Amazon ), is an excellent choice for securing smaller items, such as jewelry, lip balm and travel-size sunscreen. The clear, zippered pockets are also large enough to accommodate full-size moisturizers and other makeup items.

Electronics organizer

Open Bagsmart Electronics Organizer fills with cords against white background.

Keep your cords, battery chargers and any items for your camera – like SD cards – in one place with this electronics organizer from Bagsmart . It's easy to pack in your carry-on and even carry in your backpack or daypack if you'll need access to some of the items during the day. Everything is visible, zipped up and secure so you won't lose anything either in the room or in transit.

Flip-flops are great to have to walk around the stateroom, especially if your accommodations don't come with a plush robe and slippers. It's nice to shed heavier boots and shoes after exploring outside and have something easy to slip on your feet. Reef makes all types of flip-flops, and you can purchase the basic styles on Amazon for less than $35 a pair .

For the ship and onshore excursions

Disinfecting wipes.

If you don't like the tacky feeling that hand sanitizers can leave on your hands, consider packing antibacterial wipes such as Wet Ones . They kill 99.99% of the germs, so they're also useful for wiping down surfaces (think tables in the buffet restaurant). These wipes are perfect to pack for an excursion or to use while enjoying the ship if you want a quick refresh.

It doesn't have to be sunny outside for you to need protection from the sun. You'll be outdoors a lot in Alaska and will want to use sunscreen with at least an SPF 15, as recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation. Reef-safe sunscreen is better for you, the environment and the wildlife as it eliminates the use of certain chemicals and ingredients. Save the Reef's website has a list of reef-safe and ocean-friendly brands that include: All Good ( available in travel-size tubes on Amazon ), Mama Kuleana and Badger ( also sold on Amazon ).

Insect repellent

The height of mosquito season runs from the second week of June to the end of July. Pesky bugs are not typically as bad in the places where most tourists visit, but that will depend on the type of cruise you take. DEET-based sprays, like Cutter Backwoods Repellent are the most effective against mosquitoes, but there are alternatives. Badger makes an organic DEET-free repellent with lemongrass and citronella, and it comes in a travel-size.

Hiking poles

Lightweight collapsible hiking poles are important to pack, especially if you're going on adventurous treks looking for wildlife in the woods. Covacure's set of two trekking poles costs about $35 on Amazon . They're made of aircraft-grade 7075 aluminum, so they're strong, and they fold down to less than 14 inches each. They also have foam handles, three types of rubber tips for the poles and adjustable wrists straps. The set comes with a carry bag.

A dry bag is essential – particularly for water-based shore excursions – if you're carrying a camera, a cellphone or other items that can't get wet. HEETA's 5-liter waterproof dry bag ( on Amazon for about $15 ) comes in a wide selection of colors. There are also larger sizes, depending on your needs. The clear plastic allows you to see what's inside, and you can carry the bag over the shoulder or as a backpack.

Rain jacket and pants

The weather can be unpredictable in Alaska, with rain occurring at any time. In the Inside Passage, August and September are typically the rainiest months. In the Southwest part of the state, which includes Katmai National Park, it rains nearly half the month from May to September. If you want to go, travelers during those months especially will want to pack some rain protection for the outdoors; to stay dry, invest in fabric that is water-repellent and not just water-resistant. Columbia has a selection of rain jackets and rain pants with everything from lightweight packable shells to pieces with fleece lining for colder weather.

Silk thermal long underwear

Silk thermals are a great base layer for the weather in Alaska when you need extra warmth. The 100% silk interlock fabric is lightweight, breathable and thin enough to fit under other layers. It also naturally wicks moisture. L.L.Bean's collection of silk thermals includes tops and bottoms for both men and women.

Mid-layers are also known as insulating layers, which include fleece and windproof or insulated jackets. These garments should be breathable, quick-drying and able to keep you warm by trapping body heat without making you feel cold or clammy. Helly Hansen makes a lightweight, zippered Polartec Daybreaker Fleece Jacket for women and men that comes in a variety of colors. If you would rather wear a jacket for a mid-layer, the Gore-Tex website has a large selection of windproof and insulated jackets in collaboration with brands like Marmot, Patagonia and Quicksilver.

Waterproof shoes and boots

Merrell's comfortable shoes and boots are ideal to pack for your Alaskan adventure. If you want a shoe for walking, the Moab Speed Gore-Tex shoe is lightweight, durable, waterproof and made with FloatPro Foam to cushion your feet. It's also available in wider sizes. The Moab 3 Mid Waterproof offers more stability as a hiking boot. It also has extra features for better traction on rugged terrain and an air cushion for maximum shock absorption. Waterproof boots from XTRATUF are another option to consider if you're going to be fishing on small boats on a pre- or post-cruisetour in Alaska.

You'll want several T-shirts for relaxing in your stateroom and layering under your clothes. An old favorite are the Pima cotton, short-sleeved crewnecks from L.L. Bean . They're super soft and wash well. They also make a long-sleeve version that is mostly made of Supima cotton but features modal and spandex for additional comfort.

Bathing suit

While you may not go swimming ashore in Alaska, there's a good chance that you'll want to check out the pools or spa while you're on the ship. In that case, you'll be glad you brought a swimsuit to fully experience the thermal suites available on lines like Celebrity Cruises , Princess Cruises , Viking and Holland America Line .

Warm hat and gloves

Be sure to bring a hat and gloves for the chilly mornings ashore. For a lightweight and packable option, consider Lands End microfleece gloves for men and women , as well as a beanie . Or, if you prefer a natural fiber, a wool beanie and gloves from Smartwool will keep you toasty warm.

Fleece-lined pants

Courtesy of REI

Packing a pair of warm-lined pants for cooler days is essential. The REI Co-Op Sahara Pants are U.S. News' top travel pants pick . There's also a wide selection of fleece-lined leggings and pants on Amazon, including Baleaf fleece-lined leggings . These pants essentially include a base layer, so you won't need silk thermals on days when you wear them.

Packable jacket

A packable lightweight travel jacket is another essential item when traveling to Alaska. You can layer clothes underneath in the morning as you head outdoors, then remove the jacket as it gets warmer throughout the day. The Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket is a top pick based on thousands of reviews – and it's windproof and water-resistant. It also comes in a wide selection of colors.

Read: The Top Packable Jackets

Casual clothes

You'll want to bring lightweight layers for daytime excursions off the ship. Columbia has a great selection of nearly wrinkle-free travel pants and bottoms , along with a variety of tops and hoodies . You can mix and match these pieces throughout the week to keep packing at a minimum. In the evenings, you'll want to dress up a bit more in smart casual attire. It's best to check with your cruise line to see what's permitted in the evenings (for example, if men need a jacket to dine in a specialty restaurant), especially if you're on a luxury cruise ship .

Read: What to Wear on a Cruise

Formal clothes and themed evening attire

Some cruise lines, such as Holland America Line, still have formal evenings. It's not required to dress up, but many women wear cocktail attire and men don their suits for the evening. You'll also want to check with your cruise line to see if there are any theme parties on your voyage. If you're on a family-friendly voyage with Disney Cruise Line , you may have a "Freezing the Night Away" theme party with Anna and Elsa and the other characters from "Frozen." Look online or check with your cruise company to see what clothes you need to bring to join in the fun on your cruise.

Reusable water bottle

Ditch the plastic and pack a reusable water bottle that you can fill up at onboard water stations before heading off the ship. Amazon has plenty of options to choose from, including colorful soft silicone stainless steel bottles from Ello Cooper in three sizes that come with a straw, a handle and a leakproof locking lid.

Lightweight folding daypack

The Zomake folding daypack will become a regular item in your suitcase, no matter where you go. The 30-liter size weighs about 12 ounces and folds up into a compact pouch. The nylon construction is durable and there are plenty of exterior pockets – there's even an interior pocket with deep storage for items like a wallet or phone. Two mesh side pockets accommodate reusable water bottles. The bag is available in a variety of bold colors for less than $25 on Amazon.

Lightweight mirrorless camera and lens

Today's smartphones have impressive cameras, but most phone cameras won't have the same clarity and quality as a regular camera. If you don't want to carry a heavy DSLR camera and lens around on your Alaskan adventure, there are other options. The Canon EOS R10 is an excellent choice for a lightweight mirrorless camera along with the EF-M 18-150 mm lens. You can also purchase a mount adaptor for the camera that will allow you to use your other EF and EF-S Canon lenses.

While you may have some up-close encounters with wildlife – such as whales coming alongside your boat on a whale watching excursion – most of the wildlife viewing will be at a distance. A good pair of lightweight binoculars is key if you don't want to miss views like bears fishing for salmon along a river or a moose wading through a faraway lake. Bushnell's H20 8X42 binoculars are waterproof and fog-free.

For the journey

Carry-on bag.

The type of carry-on you use will depend on how you pack. If you're a minimalist and able to stow everything you need for a week in Alaska in a carry-on, then a larger carry-on, such as the Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Expandable Spinner , is a great choice. If you're checking a bag and don't need as much space in a carry-on, consider bringing a smaller option like the 21.5-inch Cargo Hauler XT from Eagle Creek . This water-repellent wheeled duffel bag comes in four colors including charcoal and red.

Garment bag

Delsey makes a checked-size rolling garment bag that will keep your hanging clothes organized and wrinkle-free. It has seven pockets (one exterior and six interior) for storing folded clothes and other items. There are also two compartments that will fit smaller pairs of shoes. You can hang the bag in the stateroom with the door hook if you prefer to leave the items in the bag. Another trick to ensuring wrinkle-free items is to cover your clothes on the hanger with plastic bags like those you'd get at the dry cleaner.

Packing cubes

Packing cubes keep clothes neat and organized and mostly wrinkle-free. Luggage brands like Ricardo Beverly Hills and Eagle Creek make well-rated packing cubes and organizers. You can also purchase sets of packing cubes on Amazon, such as the Veken Set 8-piece set , a U.S. News top packing cube pick .

Travel pillow and quilted wrap

Trtl Travel Pillow in gray against neutral background.

You'll want a travel pillow to take a nap on your flight en route to your Alaskan cruise. The unique design of the Trtl Travel Pillow supports your head so you don't wake up with neck pain, and the fabric is super soft. It comes in a travel pouch with a hook so you can attach it to your carry-on bag. If you get chilly on flights, Trtl also makes a new packable quilted mini wrap that weighs less than 13 ounces. It comes in a pouch and even has pockets to keep your hands warm or to stash your valuables (such as a passport, wallet or phone) while you nod off.

Medications

Keep your medications with you in a carry-on bag or personal item (such as a handbag) just in case your checked bag is lost or delayed. Request smaller bottles for prescriptions from your pharmacist, so they're easier to pack, and make sure they're clearly labeled should you be questioned by TSA. You'll also want to bring any over-the-counter items you may need, such as antacids or antibiotic ointments. It's possible to buy these items on the ship, but they are expensive.

Collapsible duffel

If you're a shopper and plan to bring home souvenirs to friends and family, you might want an extra bag to pack up the items for the return trip home. Look for a collapsible duffel bag that will fit into your suitcase. There are many options on Amazon, including the Gonex Foldable Duffel . At the end of the cruise, you can offload your dirty clothes to the duffel bag so you'll have space in your suitcase for T-shirts, moose stuffed animals, Alaskan specialties like Captain Jim's Alaska smoked salmon and other memorabilia from your adventure.

What not to pack for your cruise

Small appliances.

Travel irons and steamers are not permitted on cruise ships due to the fire hazard. As mentioned above, there are several other ways to prevent wrinkles in your clothes. You're also not allowed to bring coffee makers and other small electrical items. In addition, don't bring a hair dryer as they are usually provided in your stateroom.

Alcohol and spirits

Some cruise lines permit guests to bring one or two bottles of wine or Champagne on board the ship, but hard alcohol is almost always not allowed. If you have a beverage package or are sailing on an all-inclusive line , alcoholic beverages will be covered. Check with your cruise line before you sail to see what you can bring on board the ship.

CBD and marijuana

Cannabis is illegal in the U.S., and many cruise ships do not allow any form of CBD, including gummies, oils and lotions. It's best to play it safe and leave these items at home. You don't want to risk having the items thrown away or, in the worst case, not being allowed to board the ship.
