Behind the scenes of soul surfer: q & a.

soul surfer hero's journey

I get a lot of questions about the making of my movie, Soul Surfer , and the experience of having a movie made about my story.

Not going to lie, it was pretty crazy 😆.

I thought it would be fun to do a blog post answering a lot of these questions so I could share what it was like from my perspective behind-the-scenes!

“How did you feel about having a movie made about you?”

Having a movie made about me is not something that I expected or something that I went seeking. My personality naturally doesn’t love being in the spotlight. While I usually prefer being behind the scenes, I have been on a journey to use the spotlight I’ve been given to encourage others. Soul Surfer was a great example of this because I wanted to use this opportunity to shine a light into the world. But if we were going to make this movie, I wanted to make sure that we did it right!

My family and I went through a lot of scripts over the years and they were all so terrible that we didn’t even bother working with them!! So when we finally got a script that was worth reading and something we could work with, we were super stoked.

It was very important to us that the movie really captured our entire journey as accurately as possible. We wanted to put the feelings of all the emotions and everything we went through, good and bad, into the movie. From there we worked very hard to fix up scenes that weren’t accurate or that didn’t have the feel of us. I went through the script with a fine-toothed comb so-to-speak until I was satisfied with everything!

Overall, my family was super involved in the whole process – we were on the set almost every day – and we all are very happy with how it turned out.

The cast and crew were completely rad and we all enjoyed hanging out with them so much! They did such a great job of taking the ideas, priorities, values and expectations that my family and I had for Soul Surfer and bringing them to the big screen in the best way possible.

The experience was super wild and cool and surreal all at once. I was 19 when they started making Soul Surfer , so it was a really weird concept to have a movie being made about your life while you still have so much of your life ahead of you.

“Were you satisfied with AnnaSophia Robb’s portrayal of you?”

Yes, definitely. We put a lot of thought into choosing all the actors and actresses, however I specifically hand-picked AnnaSophia Robb out for this role. My mom and I had seen Bridge to Terabithia and my mom was like, “She’s the girl we have to get to play you, Bethany!!”

I was so stoked to have her as part of the movie! I honestly didn’t think I would find someone who would do it justice and my expectations were really high. Overall, I think she did an incredible job… I guess she was the girl for me!

It was also really fun because we became great friends in the process! Sean McNamara, our director, and his team set up four days where AnnaSophia went to Hawaii prior to any of the filming. They rented a beach house and she and I just hung out for four days and I taught her to surf. We were so excited to meet each other at the time! At first it was a little awkward (I mean, how do you act and what do you say around the actress who is going to portray you in a Hollywood movie?!), but once we got to know each other we got along really well.

We quickly became a great team because I knew nothing about acting and she knew nothing about surfing haha. So my main job was helping her learn to surf (she was actually a pretty quick learner!). And in turn, she observed me, learned more about me and asked lots of questions about my life so that she could portray me as accurately as possible.

All things considered, it was a best-case scenario! I can’t imagine anyone who would have played the part better than AnnaSophia and I loved that I gained a sweet new friend in the process.

“Your faith takes a big role in this movie. Did you get a lot of push-back about this while making Soul Surfer ?”

This aspect took a lot of careful work behind the scenes. Soul Surfer is an interesting blend in Hollywood because it’s a mainstream film with more Christian themes than most. My faith is the most important part of my life and it is the foundation for my family and I so it was VERY important to us that our faith was prioritized in the script. However, I wanted to incorporate my faith into the movie in a way that was real and honest and not cheesy.

I was super thankful for Sean McNamara because he really fought to keep faith in the center stage of everything, even when screenwriters wanted to cut it out. I really appreciated his perspective on this because he really wanted to give our faith an authentic role in the film without making it too preach-y. I think he did a really great job of weaving it in!

Hope you like Soul Surfer as much as we do! Read my other blog posts on Behind the Scenes of Soul Surfer here and here . 🙂

Summary and Study Guide

Soul Surfer is a memoir by the surfer Bethany Hamilton . While it touches on different periods of time, such as Bethany’s early childhood and her parents’ young adulthood, Soul Surfer focuses on a single incident in the author’s life: a shark attack while she was surfing at 13. Soul Surfer was originally published in 2004, when Hamilton was only 14, and is co-authored by Sheryl Berk and Rick Bundschuh. Soul Surfer fits into the genre of inspirational memoirs, alongside books like Still Lolo by Lauren Scruggs and Everything is Possible by Jen Bricker, each of which tells the story of a devastating accident that is overcome by faith and perseverance. The book sold well, and in 2011, a movie adaptation, also called Soul Surfer , was released. This guide refers to the 2004 edition published by Pocket Books, New York, NY.

Soul Surfer contains two elements that appeal to a young adult reader: color photos of the author and segments that are set apart in gray boxes in the text. The photos put faces to Bethany Hamilton’s inner circle of friends, and the boxes give the reader “insider knowledge” related to the world of Bethany Hamilton. One box, for instance, contains facts about the history of surfing, while another contains a glossary of “surfspeak.”

Popcorn and Inspiration: ‘Soul Surfer’: Girl Loses Arm to Shark, Surfs Even Better

Mark Jackson

PG |1h 52m | Sports, Drama, Biopic, Faith-based | April 8, 2011

True story: When a 14-foot tiger shark explodes out of the blue depths and shears 13-year-old world-class surfer Bethany Hamilton’s left arm off at the shoulder, it’s the end of her world as she knew it.

Bethany Hamilton (AnnaSophia Robb), a headlining name in competitive surfing, in "Soul Surfer." (Sony Pictures Releasing)

In the classic telling, the hero heeds a call from the wilderness and willingly leaves the village compound where he or she grew up, to go on a dangerous adventure to discover his “gold.” The “Soul Surfer” variation is the true story of an already-golden girl and top competitor, whose village compound was a cozy surf culture. The film demonstrates how sometimes, in order to make huge gains, one must first (often unwillingly) incur massive loss. Contrary to how that sounds, this is a feel-good movie in the best sense of the word.

Bethany Hamilton (AnnaSophia Robb) in her glory days as a top surfing competitor, in "Soul Surfer." (Sony Pictures Releasing)

Visually, it’s a stunning film (produced by Doug Schwartz, known for “Baywatch”): turquoise water, white-sand beaches, electric-blue waves, and tanned skin. Dennis Quaid is Bethany’s dad, Helen Hunt’s the mom, up-and-comer AnnaSophia Robb (“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”) plays Bethany, and Jack Nicholson’s daughter Lorraine plays Alana, her best friend.

The Journey Begins

(L–R) Arlene Newman-Van Asperen, Jeremy Sumpter, Chris Brochu, Ross Thomas, Dennis Quaid, and Helen Hunt in "Soul Surfer." (Sony Pictures Releasing)

One understands quickly that in the same way that death-by-avalanche is a looming risk in a mountaineering family, and getting stuck under a submerged rock a risk in white-water kayacking families, so also is death-by-shark an accepted occupational hazard in a surfing family. The all-consuming passion and addiction to the religion-sport utterly squelches the fear of violent death that terrifies non-disciples.

Bethany Hamilton (AnnaSophia Robb, L) and her surf-bestie Alana Blanchard (Lorraine Nicolson), in "Soul Surfer." (Sony Pictures Releasing)

The story begins with Bethany and her bestie Alana landing their first endorsements and winning a berth in the National Scholastic Surfing Association’s regional event, to the extreme annoyance of their surly rival Malina Birch (Sonya Balmores Chung).

Their church youth minister, Sarah Hill (“American Idol” Carrie Underwood in her acting debut), worries that the teens need to rethink their priorities when Bethany cancels a mission trip to Mexico in order to continue her training.

Director Sean McNamara slowly winds up the sense of incoming danger with underwater shots of surfers paddling on the ocean’s surface. While with Alana, Alana’s dad Holt (Kevin Sorbo) and her brother Byron (Jeremy Sumpter), Bethany is lying on her board after a surf session off the north shore of Kauai when a real life “Jaws” event occurs. Tiger sharks, being apex predators, can efficiently snip your arm off like pruning shears snipping a rose, and so the actual event is surprisingly lacking in drama.

Bethany Hamilton (AnnaSophia Robb) in dangerous waters, in "Soul Surfer." (Sony Pictures Releasing)

However, following on its heels is a riveting, almost 10-minute sequence chronicling the Blanchards’ efforts to get the bleeding Bethany to shore and then to the hospital, where the resident surgeon (Craig T. Nelson) is preparing to operate on Bethany’s dad’s knee (Dennis Quaid) but quickly shifts his priorities to saving Bethany’s life.

Hero’s Journey

(L-R) Chris Brochu, Ross Thomas, Dennis Quaid, AnnaSophia Robb, and Helen Hunt in "Soul Surfer." (Sony Pictures Releasing)

In the ravine, one meets The Ally. Bethany’s perennial ally is her family, but Sarah Hill also steps up. Bethany had previously put the church group on the back burner behind her surfing, but now she embraces the opportunity.

Bethany Hamilton (AnnaSophia Robb) coming to the realization that ukulele playing is going to be a serious problem, in "Soul Surfer." (Sony Pictures Releasing)

With Sarah’s encouragement, Bethany goes to Phuket, Thailand, to help out in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami and discovers that, arm or no arm, she can put her skills to use by helping the disenfranchised natives have some fun surfing. This is known as “Bringing one’s gold back to the village compound,” or using one’s talents to serve a cause greater than oneself.

Sarah Hill (Carrie Underwood, standing C) and Bethany Hamilton (AnnaSophia Robb, seated, in red) helping people in need, in "Soul Surfer." (Sony Pictures Releasing)

A new sense of purpose dawns on her, and with this renewed hope, she again reenters the world of surfing competition. This is where we finally see just how awesome she is—a better literal example of “I’ll beat you with one arm tied behind my back” you will not find. These competitions are real, jump-up/fist-pump/holler-“Yeah!” scenes.

Bethany Hamilton (AnnaSophia Robb) discovering that nothing can hold her back, in "Soul Surfer." (Sony Pictures Releasing)

Throughout the film, Bethany is a preternatural emotional Rock of Gibraltar, but we see her transformation expand when she genuinely even thanks her arch-rival Malina—a supreme mean-girl who shows no compassion for Bethany’s handicap—for not easing up on her, thereby upping Bethany’s game. You can tell it’s an authentic giving of thanks, and this display of how not to harbor resentment is so powerful that it drains all the gloat out of Malina’s face. The movie boils down to a duel between these two gifted girls.

Bethany Hamilton (AnnaSophia Robb, L) faces her rival Malina Birch (Sonya Balmores Chung, C), in "Soul Surfer." (Sony Pictures Releasing)

In addition to the turquoise waters, she now surfs the waves of hope and happiness that she’s generated in the souls of those around the globe who’ve suffered great loss and follow her lead by not giving up.

The film’s only slight downer is the lukewarm soundtrack, which brings in a faint element of cheese. Luckily “Soul Surfer” is a powerful archetypal story first, a surfing movie second, a Christian movie third, and all-in-all an inspirational film you should have a family couch viewing with, along with some homemade popcorn.

Heroes: What They Do & Why We Need Them

A commentary on today's heroes, bethany hamilton: a hero who defies odds and provides hope.

Bethany Hamilton was on the path to be a hero from a young age. With her two parents and brothers being competitive surfers, she was destined to be great, yet no one could have predicted the traumatic event that would take her local heroism to a world wide scale.

Being a young surfer with as many trophies and wins is impressive in itself. But the fact that she is a young female surfer in a sport dominated by men caused Bethany to be seen as a role model and mentor to children, and especially girls, in Hawaii. To locals, Bethany was on her way to becoming, if not already, a hero. Then, disaster struck.

When Bethany was only 13 years old, she lost her arm from a tiger shark bite while surfing. Her entire left arm was bit clean off. It seemed this tragedy signified the end of her surfing career, given the fact that two arms are crucial for paddling and balance and the assumption that she would be terrified to ever enter the water again after such a horrific accident.

Yet this assumption could not be farther from what happened. Not only did Bethany get back on her board and into the water, she continued to compete in able body tournaments and grew into a pro surfer and hero. Her heroic status started locally as surfers and residents in Hawaii heard of her overcoming such odds. Then, with the help of movies, books and TV, her heroism spread nationally.

Like most heroes are at some point, she is distraught and on the verge of giving up when she finds a mentor. She has support from family, friends and coaches, but her most impactful mentor was Sarah Hill, her youth director at church. Through their relationship Bethany grew to be able to motivate herself and find the confidence she was missing.

Finally, to finish the traditional heroic journey, Bethany overcomes the hardship and uses what she learned to inspire and connect with others. Today, she is still a surfer but spends a lot of her time working with injured and disabled patients and being a motivational speaker.

Bethany was able to reach a heroic status due to her relatability. She was a totally normal girl prior to the accident and continued to live a life of normalcy. Getting back into surfing was more of a way for her to continue with her life than an attempt to draw attention and fame. This sense of normalcy made those who admired her feel like they knew her and she developed a following of people who saw her as an ordinary girl who overcame extraordinary odds which elevated her to a position of heroism and made her someone people could look up to.

Her most heroic act and largest impact is her ability to provide people with hope. From young girls hoping to become surfers to handicapped adults, she was able to inspire and provide hope to countless individuals. Her ability to overcome such odds provides hope to anyone with the odds stacked against them, especially those with disabilities that were also once considered detrimental. Her ability to provide hope to able body and handicapped people of all ages demonstrates her resounding heroism.

soul surfer hero's journey

Soul’s Journey as Hero’s Journey

By Rhonda Leifheit

Stories of heroes and heroines exist in all cultures, from ancient Greek mythology (Hercules) to childhood fairytales (Little Red Riding Hood) . The purpose of these stories was to inspire the human spirit - not only to endure life’s hardships, but in some way, to rise above them. These days we see heroes on screen in classics like: Star Wars, Harry Potter , and Avengers . Their popularity speaks to something deep in the human psyche; something within us that admires those who face adversity, rise above “forces of evil”, muster courage, and display integrity.

Yet ancient tales and blockbuster movies put heroes on a pedestal and out of reach. Imagine instead that we are all on a hero’s journey. The teachings of Carolyn Myss, Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung help us appreciate that we all encounter challenges and battle enemies of one kind or another - some outer, most inner - and strive to emerge the heroes/heroines of our own lives. This is also called “the soul’s journey”.

According to Myss, the evolution of the archetypal hero’s journey “…begins with a process of separation or alienation from the tribe, followed by a series of difficult challenges that the hero must meet along the way. The journey culminates in a descent into the abyss of self-doubt and a loss of faith in the Divine, but then results in a vital transformation and a renewal of trust, which in turn leads to a revelation of some new knowledge, insight or wisdom ” (Myss 65) [emphasis added]

Translate these stages to your own world and you will see heroes everywhere. Think of a time when you (or someone you know) has faced separation and loss of the familiar. Examples might include: the end of a relationship, mental or physical illness, loss of income, death of a loved one, issues of gender identity, loss of home by foreclosure or natural disaster, and other forms of shock or trauma. Any of these experiences then leads to the next phase - A series of challenges .

Among the greatest challenges are the “inner adversaries” of despair and self-doubt . One might experience a loss of faith , encountering the “dark night of the soul”. If we get “stuck” in this phase, we can create what is known as “Samskaras” (or scars) in the Hindu tradition. These are the psychic or soul wounds that can travel with us from lifetime to lifetime and can be discovered and understood through past life exploration.

It is only by facing adversity that the hero emerges transformed . But what is it that transforms a human struggle into a hero’s journey? The beloved classic The Wizard of Oz gives us some significant clues.

Swept away from the comforts of home, Dorothy enters a strange land, encounters adversity, yet discovers allies on her journey. They each discover that what they would seek from the Wizard could actually be found within: Dorothy learns to believe in herself. Her three friends, who had become trusted allies on the path, discover that their coveted courage, heart, and brains emerge from the challenges they face. And, let’s not forget loyal Toto, whose intuitive instincts pull back the curtain to reveal the Wizard’s illusion.

When Glinda, The Good Witch tells Dorothy, “You always had the power to go home”, Scarecrow asks, “Why didn’t you tell her before?”. To which Glinda replies: “She had to learn it for herself”.

Each of us is on a journey - unique to our own soul growth. If we choose to view it as a hero’s journey, we too can find spiritual allies along the way and come to appreciate the gifts, strengths, and inner resources that are uniquely ours.

May you always find the light to guide your way,

About This Year’s Theme: Saying ‘Yes’ To Life As It Is

On this retreat, we will gather together in the ‘tavern’ to listen deeply to the needs and expressions residing within our own hearts, and the hearts of our fellow travelers.

We will cultivate a renewed ‘strength of heart’ in the tender presence of one another, a resilient and beating heart capable of withstanding the conflicts and confusions in the ‘burning furnace’ of the world.  Only then can we say ‘yes’ to life as it is, and ‘yes’ to ourselves as we are.

With encouragement and support, we will uplift the very best in one another, look deeply into our own shadows, and find the inspiration to grow from the places of our least developed aspects of our being – a place where we can finally let into our hearts ‘the authority that only tenderness can bring ‘.

When we embrace the place within ourselves that can let the  Wild God  in, we feel at once foolish and empowered, vulnerable and strong, brimming with uncertainty and clarity in equal measures.

Creating Space For Restoration, Reconnection & Renewal

Our  Soul Tavern Retreat  provides men with a space to renew their hearts in ways that bring us more fully alive, and re-activates our capacity to make ourselves useful in our worlds.

We do this by harvesting the wisdom gained from sharing what is most real about our lived experiences, by embracing what matters most to us in our lives, and by coming towards our aliveness in joyful and satisfying ways with one another.  We do this by being immersed in a beautiful space, guided by being a part of a rich, kindred community presence and spirit.
