The U.S.S. Excelsior , fourth starship to bear the name, is on a two-year mission of exploration on the far side of the galaxy. Some would call this an honor for Commander Alcar Dovan and his young crew, especially coming so soon after the tragic death of Captain Cortez and so many veteran officers at Valandria. Certainly that's what Admiral Parker's telling the press. Those with a more cynical mindset — such as, oh, I don't know, Captain Dovan himself — would call it exile, a coverup designed to keep the Excelsior out of the public eye after their shocking, top-secret discovery of a terrifying threat to the entire galaxy.

But, as the dedication plaque says, "Wherever you go, there you are," and the Excelsior crew have thrown themselves into their frontier expedition with zest. Since passing through the ancient Iconian Gateway that sent them to this distant region of space, they have had less and less contact with Starfleet Command, and seen sights they could have never imagined. But why is this area so full of Iconian ruins? And why, after a quarter of a million years, are so many of them starting to show signs of life?

Starship Excelsior is a full-cast, full-production, fan-made audio drama in the tradition of Big Finish and Darker Projects. In our early years, we released 40-minute episodes every three months or so. More recently, we have released 80-minute episodes every five months or so. While some (excellent) Trek fan productions aim to exactly preserve Star Trek as it was in 1966, and others try to remake Star Trek into an entirely different (much darker) show, Excelsior simply aims to tell the very best, cutting-edge science fiction stories we can. We aren't afraid to modernize our format, tell big stories, play with the "canon," and break taboos. We have a track record that demonstrates our critical approach to modern Trek . However, in the end, it all comes back to Gene Roddenberry's bold vision of the future: like him, our aim is simply to take Star Trek — and our listeners — where we have never gone before.

Commander Alcar Dovan

Alcar Dovan is the most highly-decorated officer in Starfleet below the rank of captain. He has fought in dozens of engagements, won the Grankite Order of Tactics during the Borg Incursion at Sector 001, and was knighted in the Legion of Bolias for single-handedly stealing a Jem'Hadar attack ship and rescuing four retreating Allied vessels during Second Chin'toka.

Lieutenant Alecz Lorhrok

Lieutenant Lorhrok was widely considered too young to be chief engineer of a Sovereign -class starship, but Captain Cortez saw something special in him, and plucked him from an obscure post aboard the U.S.S. Steadfast to get him on her senior staff. When she died, even more responsibility was thrust upon him as Commander Dovan chose him to serve as first officer — a temporary assignment that has proved to be anything but. Some value Lorhrok's innocence; others call him naive. Alecz is Trill, but has never sought symbiosis.

Lieutenant Commander Neeva

Neeva, one of the only Orion women serving in Starfleet, was born on a hardscrabble Klingon world — a failed colony — before apprenticing with an Orion pirate crew at age 9. Eventually, in dire straits, the crew sold her to a kindly Federation citizen, who rescued her. Neeva soon fell in love with the order and safety of the Federation, and she is now the Excelsior 's ferociously by-the-book Chief of Operations. She has struggled to form lasting friendships, but hopes that might be changing in her new assignment. ( Audio Supplement )

Lieutenant Asuka Yubari

Lieutenant Yubari, chief of security, has a short temper and powerful fists, which have gotten her both out of and into trouble for most of her life. After she was seriously wounded during a special forces mission, Yubari moved to Intelligence, where she worked as an analyst in the same division as Bev Rol. A field assignment took her to the Excelsior , where events came to a head and left her with a new job. Yubari is extraordinarily loyal to her comrades, and never fails to avenge herself upon her enemies. We're lucky she's on our side.

Ensign Bev Rol

Alex Bevoney "Bev" Rol was a high-ranking intelligence officer for decades, but he was unsustainably idealistic, and, one day, he fell from grace, despaired of those ideals, and ended up doing dirty work for a black ops group. Meeting the exceptionally idealistic Alecz Lorhrok while on assignment was a turning point for Rol, and became a helmsman and C.O. of the Excelsior fighter squadron. ( Audio Supplement )

Doctor Melissa Sharp

Melissa (as she insists on being called) is a short, fragile little human woman with a cheery disposition and a general distaste for all things space-y. She only ever wanted to be a researcher, but her attempts to remain on Earth during the Dominion War — and her principled opposition to the War — made her a coward in the eyes of many in Starfleet. Recognizing that she would never get to do what she loved until she erased that label, Sharp signed up for a short tour on the Excelsior as Chief Medical Officer. ( Audio Supplement )

Star Trek: Excelsior provides examples of:

  • The "Sword of Damocles"
  • A lesser example: "the graceful end."
  • Busman's Holiday : "A Day at the Park". Looks like the problem isn't unique to Risa.
  • By-the-Book Cop : Neeva is an extreme stickler for the rules, regardless of circumstance, which often puts her at odds with Dovan.
  • The Captain : Capt. Rachel Cortez until she dies
  • Number Two : Cmdr. Alcar Dovan until he has to take Cortez's place
  • Mr. Fixit : Lt. Alecz Lohrok
  • The Medic : Dr. Mellisa Sharp
  • The Big Guy : Lt Cmdr. Asuka Yubari
  • The Heart : Lt. Neeva
  • Ace Pilot : Ensign Bevony Rol
  • The Sixth Ranger : Lt Cmdr. Kestra J'Naya

star trek excelsior

  • Darker and Edgier : This series is to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine what Deep Space 9 was to the rest of the franchise.
  • "At Death's Door". Or more accurately, Death Is Forced Into Permanent Exile.
  • The Stinger for the episode reveals a more straightforward example took place for the Trill race while Lohrok was possessed by the Bringer.
  • Do Not Go Gentle : The Anbar crew with the "graceful end".
  • Fix Fic : For much of early Star Trek: The Next Generation . Remember those alien parasites from Season 1 that were never seen again? Remember when the Borg weren't interested in assimilating folks, just their technology? Turns out the only reason one of these threats hasn't steamrolled the Federation yet is because they're too busy fighting each other.
  • Green-Skinned Space Babe : Subverted with Neeva. Despite being a member of the Trope Namer race, she takes pheromone suppressants so she can work with male coworkers without becoming a...distraction.
  • The entire crew of the SS Anbar .
  • "The Line" suggests Rol and Brahms are villainous examples.
  • Home Base : Starbase 911, at the mouth of the Alpha Quadrant Gateway, seems to be serving that purpose.
  • Thus beating official canon to the punch by about fourteen years.
  • One-Steve Limit : Averted with two main cast members both named "Alex". Particularly egregious given that this is an audio drama. Finally Enforced by Dovan at the start of Season 4, who decrees that Rol will now be addressed by his middle name: Bevony .

  • Valandria, Planet of Matriarchal Lizard Folk - the only example to appear in the first three seasons.
  • "Guards! Get Them!" has a Planet of Medieval Stasis
  • "At Deaths Door" - Planet of Sorta-Immortals
  • Previously on… : Played with in "The Man From Syracuse". The narrator simply says, "Previously on Star Trek", omitting the word "Excelsior". Clips are then played from various episodes over the first three seasons of TNG, relating to the Borg and the neural parasites .
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right! : This is Dovan's mindset and is considered a maverick because of it.
  • " Lords of Kobol " is one of Dovan's favorite exclamations.
  • More than once, Lohrok has remarked on how handy a sonic screwdriver would be.
  • Apparently the Trill version of Jesus is somebody called the Great Prophet Zarquon .
  • Inverted with "Sunset", which is presented as the series finale of Star Trek: Anbar , which doesn't actually exist IRL, though many listeners were fooled because the premise of a series finale to a nonexistent series was played completely straight.
  • The production team thought that calling it "Episode 12 of Season 54" would be enough to convince everyone their legs were being pulled, but was subsequently delighted to learn that it wasn't.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist : General Isaac Brahms .

Star Trek: 10 Secrets Of The USS Excelsior

If your grandmother had wheels, she'd be this iconic Star Trek starship.

Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country USS Excelsior

Would you look at that.

The USS Excelsior was introduced in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock as the hot new starship in the fleet; "My friends, The Great Experiment."

While it was arguably an adversary to the quainter, OG movie Enterprise, the Excelsior's sleek design was a hit with fans and remains one of the most popular and recognizable starships in the Star Trek Universe... Scotty's reservations aside.

The Excelsior herself only appeared in a handful of films and a single episode of television, but her sisters in the Excelsior-class line of starships enjoyed unparalleled ubiquity in the franchise, notably showing up in countless episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager, as basically any old Federation vessel, and appearing in Star Trek Generations, gloriously slash cost-effectively redesigned to portray the USS Enterprise-B.

The USS Excelsior entered the Star Trek canon a whopping 37 years ago (and hasn't been seen on screen since 2001) but it has left an indelible impression on the franchise, influencing everything from the design of the USS Enterprise-E from Star Trek: First Contact to technology in JJ Abrams' 2009 Star Trek reboot.

She also happens to be one of the most requested starships in the TrekCulture YouTube comments section, so let's voyage to the Beta Quadrant, catalogue gaseous anomalies, and explore these ten secrets of the USS Excelsior that you need to know.

Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country USS Excelsior

The USS Excelsior (initially called the USS Valiant) was described in the script for Star Trek III: The Search for Spock as "the new Queen of Space" and "a super starship".

Unlike previous Star Trek ships which had been designed through a series of back and forths between concept artists, producers, and VFX artists, the bulk of the design work for the Excelsior was done by the model shop at Industrial Light & Magic. In this capacity, ILM eschewed the creation of dozens (or even hundreds) of conceptual drawings in favor of building numerous study models, many featuring radically different configurations from the refit Enterprise but all reflecting the script's mandate for a "clearly bigger, sleeker, and very new" vessel.

Presented with these study models, Search for Spock director Leonard Nimoy selected the ship most recognizably Starfleet, but with a twist.

According to ILM model maker Bill George, the starship configuration Nimoy chose had some very Earthly roots:

At the time I was really into Japanese design, so I thought, "OK, what would the "Enterprise" look like if the Japanese designed it?" That was the basis of what I came up with for the "Excelsior".

Due to the difficulties with the cumbersome refit Enterprise model built by Magicam for The Motion Picture and the lessons the ILM model shop learned themselves constructing and filming the USS Reliant for The Wrath of Khan, the Excelsior miniature was built using lightweight materials which made it easier to move, mount, and photograph.

Screen Rant

Forget the enterprise, star trek's greatest ship is the excelsior.

While the Enterprise is the most famous Star Trek ship, the Excelsior-class starships have been the backbone of Starfleet for almost a century.

The Starship Enterprise may boast a proud legacy, but Star Trek 's greatest ship is the Excelsior. Created by Gene Roddenberry, Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation are about the exploits of the starships named Enterprise commanded by Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart); there was also the prequel Star Trek: Enterprise starring Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula). The franchise has also spotlighted other popular starships like Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's U.S.S. Defiant and the titular vessels of Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Discovery . However, the U.S.S Excelsior and the Excelsior -class starships are the true backbone of Starfleet.

The U.S.S. Excelsior was introduced in Star Trek III: The Search For Spock , which was set in 2285 .  Dubbed "The Great Experiment", the Excelsior (NCC-2000) was larger and more advanced than the Enterprise and it was to be the first starship equipped with a transwarp drive. However, Montgomery Scott (James Doohan) sabotaged the Excelsior to allow Kirk and his crew to steal the Enterprise and escape to resurrect Spock (Leonard Nimoy) . Regardless, the Excelsior's transwarp drive turned out to be a failure because of the instability it caused to dilithium crystals . After spending the next few years in spacedock, the Excelsior finally launched on a three-year mission under the command of Captain Hikaru Sulu (George Takei) cataloguing gaseous anomalies in the Beta Quadrant. In Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country , set in 2293, Sulu led the Excelsior to aid Kirk's Enterprise in exposing a conspiracy to prevent the peace treaty between the Klingons and the Federation.

Originally, Star Trek producer Harve Bennett intended for Kirk and his crew to take command of the Excelsior. The Enterprise was destroyed in Star Trek III and the idea simply was that Kirk would get the Excelsior as his new ship. However, those plans were changed, largely due to the producers fearing fan backlash because Star Trek and Kirk are synonymous with the Enterprise. Instead, at the end of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home , Kirk took command of the U.S.S. Enterprise-A, which was an identical Constitution -class vessel. But as the franchise continued in the 24th century with Star Trek: The Next Generation , the Excelsior -class starship quietly took on a greater significance as the most important starship class in Starfleet.

star trek excelsior

The Excelsior -class starship debuted in the 23rd-century but, remarkably, they are still a key part of Starfleet in the 24th century. Indeed, Excelsior -class starships fought in Star Trek 's major wars such as against the Borg in the Battle of Wolf 359 in 2366-2367 and the Dominion War of 2373-2375. This means that, even though the idea of transwarp drive was scrapped long ago, the Excelsior -class ships have been active in Starfleet for almost an entire century. Further, Starfleet admirals and flag officers typically use Excelsior -class ships as their personal flagships.

Along with the U.S.S. Excelsior - a newer version with the registry NCC-21445 is active in the 24th century - other famous Excelsior -class starships are the U.S.S. Hood and the U.S.S. Potemkin (Commander Will Riker served on both ships prior to the Enterprise-D), the U.S.S. Crazy Horse, the U.S.S. Gorkon, and... the U.S.S. Enterprise-B. As seen in Star Trek Generations , Captain Kirk was presumed killed by the Nexus on the maiden voyage of the Enterprise-B. Although the Enterprise-B's tenure under Captain John Harriman (Alan Ruck) was relatively undistinguished compared to Archer, Kirk, and Picard's vessels, becoming part of the Enterprise's legacy enhanced the Excelsior -class' status within Starfleet.

The Excelsior -class' sleek design, with its curved warp nacelles, is also the forebearer of the Galaxy -class starships like the U.S.S. Enterprise-D. And, although the Excelsior -class starships were never featured as the signature vessel of a Star Trek series (Sulu is the most famous Captain of the Excelsior), the Excelsior has proven itself to be the most important starship class of the franchise. After all, despite its enduring legacy and status as the flagship of the Federation, there is no Enterprise -class of starships in Star Trek .

Forgotten Trek

Designing the Excelsior

The original Excelsior was designed by Nilo Rodis and Bill George and built at Industrial Light and Magic for Star Trek III: The Search for Spock . The model also appeared in The Voyage Home and The Undiscovered Country , and was relabeled for use in the first two seasons of The Next Generation . It was refurbished again with entirely new arrangements and details to represent a refit modification, the Enterprise -B, in Star Trek Generations .

The refit modifications were designed by John Eaves under the supervision of Herman Zimmerman. Since the original model was no longer in its original configuration, a new one was built by Greg Jein when the Excelsior appeared in the Voyager episode “Flashback”, if at a smaller scale. This model continued to be sed until a CGI of the Excelsior was made for later seasons of Deep Space Nine and Voyager .

Excelsior concept art

Although the Enterprise -B had already been established as an Excelsior -class starship, the producers of Generations felt the Excelsior had been seen too many times in previous films. They wanted a new design. This presented a challenge to the movie’s art staff. How to maintain continuity while giving the audience a “new” ship?

Enterprise-B concept art

John Eaves writes in Star Trek: The Next Generation Sketchbook, The Movies that the Excelsior had always been his favorite ship. “Bill George’s design conveyed power, elegance and beauty, so when the task fell to me to modify the ship, I was both thrilled and concerned.”

Fortunately, Mike Okuda came over to the feature Art Department to discuss changes that would significantly alter the ship’s appearance while keeping her original lines. […] His focus and direction for the modifications were extremely helpful. So together, we set to work on the details.

First, Eaves took an ILM photo that showed the Excelsior in Spacedock, did a rendering and started putting detail on the ship. Okuda pointed out they needed to design an area that protruded from the ship, so the Nexus energy ribbon could whip out a section while leaving most of the ship intact.

Enterprise-B concept art

So we built a section of decks extended out from the main body, which tapers gently on the bottom and flares out dramatically on the top. We also did a detail sketch of the area round the deflector disk, designating one area as the reactor room. The added girth increased the overall size of the vessel, while still retaining the original Excelsior design. We made a few other design changes, such as taking two fins off the top of the saucer, and putting in two major impulse engines, one on either side of the existing impulse engines (we figured these stronger engines would be needed when the saucer detached). As for the nacelles, we added a cap to them, plus a dorsal fin on top and a running fin on the outer edge.

Star Trek: What's the Story Behind Every Enterprise Design?

The USS Enterprise is Star Trek's most recognizable starship, though its iconic design from Matt Jefferies has informed the designs of future ships.

Quick Links

Andrew probert redesigned the enterprise for the films and tng, the tng series and films called for short-lived enterprise designs, the fan-designed enterprises from picard and star trek online, redesigning the original enterprise for the modern age.

Over the course of six decades, fans have loved Star Trek for reasons that have ranged from the allegorical stories to the powerful relationships between characters. There are also the starships -- more specifically, every version of the USS Enterprise that's graced the big and small screen through the ages. While they share visual similarities, the design of each version of the ship is a saga in itself. Each designer has to strike a balance between advancing the look of the Enterprise while still remaining evocative of the classic silhouette.

When developing Star Trek: The Original Series , creator Gene Roddenberry nearly blew the budget researching starships. Art director Walter Matt Jefferies designed the iconic original design for the USS Enterprise, tweaking it between the first and second pilot and then once more once The Original Series was greenlit. The combination of the saucer section, secondary hull and dual nacelles was an instantly unforgettable design that stood out from the convex saucers and rockets found in then-contemporaneous sci-fi. Even those who didn't watch the show could instantly recognize the ship . This may be why every USS Enterprise hasn't strayed that far from this original shape. While every iteration of the Star Trek flagship has its merits, there is something special about the original.

Star Trek: The Original Series

Why Star Trek: The Original Series Was Canceled and Brought Back

After unprecedented success in syndication, Paramount tapped Roddenberry to develop a sequel series in the 1970s. For Star Trek: Phase II , Jefferies redesigned the Enterprise , but he retired before it was complete. Designer Andrew Probert took over when the sequel series became Star Trek: The Motion Picture . His design changed the color scheme (particularly for the deflector dish) and hewed close to Jefferies' upgrade, complete with wider angular support struts and squared nacelles instead of the rounded ones in The Original Series . He also added a rectangular torpedo launcher at the base of ship's neck near the secondary hull.

While working on the original USS Enterprise refit for The Motion Picture , Probert wanted to really push Jefferies' design further. He gave the ship a more organic, rounded shape rather than stark angles. He also fixed something that bothered him about the nacelles, lowering them below the saucer. He imagined that when the ship accelerated, the placement would cause it to tip forward so that he could "place them closer to the ship’s center of mass," Probert said in a featurette on the complete Star Trek: The Next Generation Blu-ray. He wanted to "unify all of those shapes." When working on the sequel series, he had the image hanging on his wall. Consulting producer David Gerrold saw it, took it to Gene Roddenberry and he approved it as the official USS Enterprise-D .

The USS Enterprise-B didn't appear on the screen until Star Trek: Generations , the first film starring The Next Generation cast. Its design was based on the USS Excelsior , created by Nilo Rodis and Bill George for Star Trek III: The Search for Spock . John Eaves, a designer on The Next Generation , reworked the design by adding size to the vessel , including the portion of the secondary hull the Nexus energy ribbon would destroy, "killing" Captain Kirk. Eaves also added a cap to the Excelsior nacelles and a dorsal fin like on the original Enterprise from the series.

Gene Roddenberry's Reason for Naming Star Trek's Ship 'Enterprise' Is Brilliant

While designing the ship for The Next Generation , Andrew Probert did some concept work for the ship that preceded it. He correctly assumed that the Enterprise-B would be an Excelsior-class vessel and reverse-engineered the Enterprise-C by combining that design with what it would evolve into with the Galaxy class . When The Next Generation Season 3 called for the ship to appear via time-travel in "Yesterday's Enterprise," designer Rick Sternbach built on Probert's work. Mostly for budget reasons and the shorter production schedule, he sharpened the angles on the Ambassador class vessel. Rick will be the first to admit that the resulting design wasn't as elegant as the original concept," Micheal Okuda told Forgotten Trek, but added the resulting design preserved "Probert's vision" and kept "the cost low enough."

When the Enterprise-D was destroyed in Generations , John Eaves was tasked with designing the next iteration. Eaves started as model-maker for the series, and he recalled the difficulty in shooting the four-foot model of the series' hero ship. When designing the new ship, he maintained Probert's organic shapes, but "thought about [the crew's complaints] while I was trying to think of how to handle the situation," he told StarTrek.com . Thus, the USS Enterprise-E model was more streamlined to give the directors of the next three films multiple angles to shoot the ship. Before the second wave of Star Trek ended, designer and CGI artist Doug Drexler was called upon to create a trio of new Enterprise vessels . He designed the NX-01 for the series named after the vessel.

Drexler incorporated elements reminiscent of the aerospace construction Jefferies studied while researching the original. However, his first design included a secondary hull and a round deflector. "It was close in configuration to the Constitution class, but when you looked at it you knew…it was not as ambitious" as the original, Drexler said in collector's magazine from Eaglemoss. This design was dubbed a "refit," to be introduced in a later season. The secondary hull was removed, creating the NX-01 as it appeared in the show. Drexler was also tasked with creating the Enterprise-J, a vessel from 400 years in the future that appeared for only a few seconds on-screen . Dubbed the Universe class, the ship was massive and meant to "defy the laws of physics," according to Drexler in another issue of the Eaglemoss magazine.

Why the USS Enterprise Is Sci-Fi's Most Beautiful Starship

The Star Trek Online game needed a new Starfleet flagship. Since the game wasn't officially canon, game developers held a contest allowing fans to submit their own designs. The winning vessel was designed by Adam Ilhe, creating the Odyssey class starship. For Star Trek: Picard Season 3, the veteran designers (including Drexler, Okuda and Eaves) all contributed to polishing and updating the vessel for its introduction into canon. However, the vessel was slated for decommissioning on Frontier Day, meaning yet another Enterprise was needed.

During Picard Season 3, much of the action takes place on the USS Titan , rechristened as the Enterprise - G . In the special features of the Picard Blu-ray, showrunner Terry Matalas confirmed the ship came from a design by Bill Krause, a photographer and video producer and starship model builder . Like with the previous vessel, the design team on the show, including Eaves (friends with Krause) tweaked his design into what appeared on-screen. Krause dubbed his ship a Shangri-La Class vessel, but the one that appeared in the show was renamed the Neo-Constitution Class.

USS Enterprise in the Star Trek reboot

What the Skydance Media and Paramount Deal Could Mean for Star Trek

The original USS Enterprise was redesigned for both the feature film reboot series, called "the Kelvin Timeline" after the destruction of that vessel, and Strange New Worlds . For the film, director J.J. Abrams wanted to increase the size of the signature ship while also upgrading the design from the 1960s original. However, as other designers have found out, there's not much to improve upon where Matt Jefferies's work is concerned. Ryan Church still had to create a ship that evoked the original while fitting into a modern, big-budget sci-fi film. The saucer was significantly wider and contains more decks than original.

The biggest change came to the nacelles which were bulked up with a "hot rod" look according to The Art of Star Trek . In the subsequent films in that trilogy, the design was tweaked but only in small ways. In fact, designer Sean Hargreaves slimmed down "her ample nacelles," as Scotty put it, for Star Trek Beyond . This design was carried over to the Kelvin Timeline version of the USS Enterprise-A. When it came time to design the USS Enterprise for Star Trek: Discovery , Eaves, Scott Schneider and William Budge took on the job. At first, according to the Eaglemoss magazine, the Enterprise was going to look more like the USS Discovery than Jefferies's ship, "but this idea was soon abandoned," Eaves said.

The Star Trek veteran worked on sketches starting from the original ship and making that design fit in the Discovery aesthetic . The team figured that elements like the nacelles and outer hull would be refit often, eventually looking like the original . Eaves said the art department designed the ship so that removing hull pieces would eventually make the ship look like The Original Series version at Virtual Trek Con 5 . However, the visual effects team angled the nacelle struts at a sharper angle than the Jefferies' version. For Strange New Worlds , designer Jonathan Lee maintained that design, focusing his changes on the interior of the ship's new sets. He tried to maintain the modern aesthetic while marrying it to the feel of the ship from Star Trek: The Original Series . Each Enterprise is unique, but they all have centeral elments that hearken back to Matt Jefferies's first design.

In the course of his duties on the Hood , Will Riker refused to allow Captain DeSoto to transport to the surface of Altair III for an away mission. Despite knowing that he’d most likely face a court martial for insubordination, Riker felt the mission was too dangerous to expose the ship's CO to such a risk. In 2364 , the Hood rendezvoused with the USS Enterprise -D in orbit of Deneb IV , to transfer crew and equipment, including the ship's new first officer, William Riker and Geordi La Forge. Admiral Leonard McCoy , who was on board the Enterprise -D inspecting the medical facilities, was later escorted to the Hood in a shuttlecraft by Data . ( TNG : " Encounter at Farpoint ")

Two years later, the Hood and USS Monitor were dispatched to the Romulan Neutral Zone in order to counter a possible Romulan sneak attack emanating from a cloaked Romulan base on Nelvana III with the goal to retake the Neutral Zone. ( TNG : " The Defector ")

The Hood acted as a focal point in the tachyon detection grid in 2368

In 2368 , the Hood joined Captain Picard 's fleet that blockaded the Klingon-Romulan border during the Klingon Civil War . The ship was one of twenty-three assembled for the fleet and was one of the seventeen chosen for the tachyon network . Identified by its name and registry number , the ship's position in the network was monitored from the Enterprise -D.

When the network was disrupted by a high- energy burst released by the Romulans, the net was no longer effective in a radius of ten million kilometers around the USS Sutherland . Subsequently, Picard ordered the fleet to proceed to Gamma Eridon at maximum warp, where the fleet would attempt to reestablish the net before the Romulans got there. Background information [ ]

There had been some controversy regarding the registry number of the USS Hood . The ship was already first seen on-screen in the Star Trek: The Next Generation pilot episode " Encounter at Farpoint " in effect shots created by ILM , using the original Excelsior -class studio model built by them for Star Trek III: The Search for Spock . No registry number was visible in these shots, but on by ILM modelmaker Bill George on personal title taken pictures available on-line (X) , the model was clearly labeled "USS Hood , NCC-2541". [1]

Excelsior port of Galaxy

USS Enterprise -D with the USS Repulse "NCC-2541"

Apparently the original labeling was forgotten about or ignored by the production staff, as another, much higher registry number, NCC-42296, was devised later for the episode "Tin Man" and used consistently thereafter in various LCARS graphics, for example the starship mission status and the screen showing Star Fleet Battle Group Omega . Nevertheless, a profile view, shot for, but not yet used in the first season of the new The Next Generation series, turned up in the second season opening episode " The Child " as the USS Repulse NCC-2544. However, it took until 2012 for the remastered version of the episode for the registry number "NCC-2541" to become discernible, though only just barely (and therefore overlooked by the digital artists at CBS Digital ), on the aft of the warp nacelles, thereby providing the on-screen confirmation that the model originally was indeed relabeled "NCC-2541" in 1987.

The Hood 's appearance in "Tears of the Prophets" was confirmed by John Gross and Karen Sickles of Digital Muse in a 25 June 1998 post by DS9 Visual Effects Supervisor David Stipes on the newsgroup alt.tv.star-trek.ds9 . He noted that during the labeling of the CGI model of the USS Hood , a typographical error was made, mistakenly giving it the registry of the USS Lakota , NCC-42768. [2]

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia  (1st ed., p. 129), USS Hood , like the Constitution -class USS Hood , was " named for British Admiral Sir Horace Hood , who fought in the Battle of Jutland during World War I ", though that reference was dropped in the later editions of the Star Trek Encyclopedia , as it was uncommon to name a ship for a still serving member in any navy (the historical Hood was already nearing completion when Horace Hood died in action). The Star Trek Fact Files (part 86, 1998) stated that Hood was named for Horace's direct ancestor, 18th century British Admiral Viscount Samuel Hood after whom the British battle cruiser HMS Hood (launched and christened by Horace's widow) was also named.

Apocrypha [ ]

The USS Hood was mentioned in numerous Star Trek novels , e.g., Imzadi , Demons of Air and Darkness , A Time to Heal , Articles of the Federation , and A Singular Destiny . The latter describes the Hood as still being in service as of 2381 .

According to the 1994 Malibu Comics Star Trek: Deep Space Nine issue #6 , the Hood participated in the Battle of Wolf 359 in 2367 . Therefore, she would have been the sole vessel surviving the battle as referenced in TNG : " The Drumhead ". Canon sources, however, indicate the surviving vessel was the USS Ahwahnee . ( TNG : " Redemption II " okudagram )

In the Next Generation PC game A Final Unity , if the Enterprise is destroyed, a message plays in which a Starfleet admiral says that the USS Hood had been dispatched to investigate.

The USS Hood was one of the playable Excelsior -class starships in skirmish mode in Star Trek: Legacy .
