Thoughts on Hotel Castillo Tagoro, Playa Blanca, Lanzarote.

Unusually l booked an Inclusive Hotel without the flights as l already had booked flights. The price was definitely the best value with Sunshine Holidays than many other search engines & websites l saved over £400 at the Hotel Castillo Tagora, Playa Blanca, Lanzarote. Lovely Hotel complex with adult only dining & Sunbathing/pool/ bar area. We joined I the fun at the family pool. Westher was pretty good for a weeks break at the end of February 2024. Hotel is right on the coast the back gate of the hotel took you onto a gorgeous coastal path. 20 minute walk to Playa Blanca Marina. Room really nice, very spacious. Sent the Hotel a request for 2 doubles in quiet area with nice views, sea views if possible and they gave us Room 4276 & 4270. Smashing. Great fa.ily Hotel, lovely staff, good food. We tried put their Italian Restaurant Portafino twice very good with attentative staff throughout the Hotel. Would recommend. ❤️

We have booked with you many times and have introduced your company to many others, we never had a problem, my daughter booked a while ago and something in the pricing went wrong but you sorted it straight away and amended it within ten minutes which we were very impressed, also your holidays are priced within budget of how much we feel they should be and not like the other companies

Date of experience : December 05, 2023

Thank you for your lovely review Phillip! I am so happy to hear we got the issue resolved asap for your daughter! 😀 We hope to see your name on some more bookings with us this year! 🙌 Luci - On the Beach

Money taken and no confirmation received, cannot get in touch with any customer service line as they are all closed.

We booked a holiday a holiday on 28th February for three people, all money has been taken and we are still yet to receive any booking confirmation. I am unable to get through to any customer service phone line or live chat. I have never had anything like this with another company and I am seeing other people are having the same issue with sunshine. I have spent a lot of money on this holiday, I need an update on what is happening with my money/holiday.

I’m trying to speak to someone to rectify a spelling mistake in my email adress

I’m trying to speak to someone to rectify a spelling mistake in our email address, there is no option to speak to anyone and we can’t get into the live chat, has anyone got any idea how to reach them? **laura from sunshine holidays phoned us and had everything sorted within 5 minutes, verry efficient**

Date of experience : February 21, 2024

Hi Consumer, Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry you have struggled to get through to us. I hope our recent call resolved any issues you have been having. Thanks Laura H Sunshine

I booked 5 days ago and have made 19 phone calls to try and change the dates, due to something happening which is out of my control, but the call centre is temporarily closed. This despite the website stating that customers can call between 9:00am and 18:45pm. The website is also misleading in that it explains how to make changes online via the menu, yet this cannot be done. You have to make a request via a chatbot, and then you are told that someone will be in contact within 14 days, which is useless as in that timescale the prices are likely to have gone up by quite a lot. There is also no possibility of cancelling online without losing most of what you have paid. There should be a 7 working day cooling off period under the Distance Selling Regulations, where a full refund should be given, but this is not an option on the website. All in all an utter shambles and I will have to try and cancel, to get my money back, via my credit card provider. Unless my change can be sorted very quickly!

No Confirmation

Hi, booked a holiday on the 5th of January 2024 for Benidorm on the 11th of May 2024 for 3 adults (1 room), we have still not received any confirmation however payments have been taken from my account. I have tried using the website for assistance on what to do although the live chat is never available and the phone service is temporarily closed. Just wondering if I could get some help with this. (Lead Passenger - Lisa Wilson) No booking reference given at time of booking however must have my details as I received a text message on the 7th of January to say they were “working” to confirm it.

Date of experience : March 11, 2024

Hello Lisa, Thank you for taking time to leave your review. I am sorry to hear you've not received your confirmation yet Unfortunately you've not left any booking details so i've requested these from you. If you can please fill in the details as soon as possible we can assist you further Thank you Sunshine

Happy Customer

I provisionally booked my holiday on Wednesday the 14th of February. The following morning I had decided I wanted to extend the holiday by 2 days. I phoned using the number supplied on my pending booking. The call was answered within 5 mins. I spoke to a lovely lady called Kate who amended the pending booking while I was on the phone, booked the hotel and contacted Ryanair regarding the flights. By 2 pm on the 15th of February I received my holiday confirmation. I couldn’t have asked for better service and they are certainly good value for money.

Date of experience : February 15, 2024

Hi there, Reading your review makes us happy! We're delighted Kate assisted with tweaking your holiday. On The Beach

Travel via transfer and hotel accomodation

The hotel was lovely however the main pool was closed which wasnt informed on the company website or on sunshine holidays website. The room service was not good there not cleaning room properly. The door handle broken to bathroom, the towel handle broke, the light on main lamp wasnt working. The transfer I paid for with sunshine holidays was very bad. The agent was very rude and uncooperative and didnt speak Politely to us the guest. The taxi arranged was not luxury and was a mini van. It had high step that made hard for my elderly mum to get inside. They also parked taxi in a car park and expected us to walk to the car park, there no pick up infront of airport arrivals, there big distance to get our transfer. The ride was bumpy and uncomfortable, easily fall out of the seat if wasnt for seat belt. The step to into taxi caused my mother to pull muscle in arm and hip and leg as she had to pull herself up to get inside taxi. I will not have a private taxi arranged through sunshine holidays again.

Date of experience : February 27, 2024

Hello, Thank you for leaving a review and I am sorry to hear about the issues with the hotel and transfer during your holiday. I have sent you a message through your account if you can please take a look and follow advised actions. Please let me know if there is anything else you need, thank you. Kind Regards, Lindita - Trust Pilot Team

Efficiency, Excellence, Ease

Sunshine Holidays managed to give a great deal on a hotel in Portugal that was sold out on every other website. They provided me with a checklist and all the relevant information well in advance of my holiday which put me at ease. Very much recommend as your go-to holiday site!

The Maldives

Flight time: 10 hours When to go: December–April Average winter temperature: 28°C

There is no bad time to go to the Maldives. There is nothing bad about going to the Maldives at any time ever. They are perfect little islands, whichever you choose – tiny castaway-fantasy sandy islets, mostly with one immaculate resort, with various levels of splendidness. Even people who think they will get bored in the Maldives end up loving the Maldives. They're family-friendly , and for blissed-out beachy nirvana, they're hard to beat. And they're at their best during the British winter, and a quite do-able 10 hours away.

Where to stay: It's hard to beat Gili Lankanfushi, which sits on what might be the most beautiful lagoon in the country. We also love Alila Kothaifaru on the natural island of Kothaifaru, with its spattering of jungle-y vegetation between villas creating a truly private retreat. For some of the best snorkelling around, the Emerald Faarufushi Resort & Spa is located in one of the Maldives’ deepest, most northern atolls, ensuring plenty of marine life to peek at among the fluttering corals. Flight time: 4 hours 30 minutes from London When to go: March–May; October–November Average winter temperature: 22°C

The eastern Mediterranean Sea around Cyprus may be chilly in winter, but the island gets plenty of sunshine all year, so there's a good chance you'll get T-shirt weather even in the coldest months. From March, the island's flowers start to bloom, and there's barely another visitor in sight. It's a great option for families too as it's only a short hop from the UK and there are plenty of child-friendly hotels once you're there.

Where to stay: Anassa in Latchi made our Gold List this year as one of the best hotels in Europe . The elegant series of white buildings is particularly beloved for its multigenerational appeal thanks to a super slick kid's club and effortlessly chic adult-only spaces. For a child-free stay, adults-only Amavi is a glossy beachside bolthole with a fantastic rooftop sushi restaurant. Foodies will like Cap St George , with its seventh-floor restaurant offering incredible sea views and a regular rotation of Michelin-star chefs flown in from across the globe. For more, see our pick of the best hotels in Cyprus .

Flight time: 7 hours from London When to go: November–March Average winter temperature: 26°C

For year-round sunshine, spotless beaches and impeccable service a short hop away, Dubai is an obvious choice. The Palm, a manmade sweep of beach packed with superb hotels, each with its own immaculate patch of beach, is perfect for family holidays . It's not all glass and shopping malls in Downtown Dubai: the Old Souk is a warren of glittering jewellery and pots, and the peaceful Dubai Creek hints at a time before the seven-star hotels and indoor ski slopes. Two new creative districts (Dubai Design District and Al Quoz) have gained the attention of the international art scene, too. To see the city in its best light, go in November, when it's not too humid and you can happily bronze by the pool all day.

Where to stay: The newly-renovated Bab Al Shams now has a bright, contemporary aesthetic that remains true to its Arabian roots, with new restaurants and fantastic sunset views. For some old-world glamour, there's the maximalist marble-clad palace Jumeirah Al Qasr , which made our Gold List in 2023 . And it’d be remiss not to mention Atlantis the Royal , the self-described ‘most ultra-luxury experiential resort in the world’, which saw Beyoncé perform at its opening celebration. Flight time: 16.5 hours from London When to go: Bali is hot year-round. It is rainiest (and thus cheapest) November–April; but even when it rains, it's in short, tropical bursts. Average winter temperature: 27°C

Bali is the heavenly island with earthly pleasures. Back-to-blissed-out spa retreats so fine that Bali has developed a style all of its own: clean and contemporary, dark wood and linen whites. Parties, from flip-flop full-moon raves in hidden-away coves to the cool Potato Head Beach Club and The Lawn at the boho beach spot that everyone's talking about, Canggu . There's glamping here now, and chic boutiques. There's art in Ubud . There are spas absolutely everywhere. There are beaches, of course. And the pools here are something else: a classy, jungly deep green, shrouded by tropical leafery. Those incredible horizon pools high up overlooking rainforest – that's classic Bali.

Where to stay: Book ahead and you could nab a night in one of the world's most popular Airbnbs, The Hideout , a magical looking two-story bamboo hut in Selat. In Ubud, Capella Ubud is an African-inspired jungle camp home to 22 one-bedroom suites with sprawling outdoor decks and private plunge pools. At the edge of the Uyung River, Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve has a gilded, glittering on-site temple, spacious villas with jungle views and spa treatments by renowned intuitive healer Ibu Ketut Mursi. Flight time : 13 hours from London to Mahé (including one stop) When to go : October–November Average winter temperature: 29°C

Adrift in the Indian Ocean , a thousand miles from the nearest coast of Africa , the Seychelles are the ultimate fantasy-island escape.  The archipelago has year-round heat and sunshine, as well as its fair share of rain. The wettest months in the Seychelles are November to March, but temperatures never get too oppressively hot (meandering around 24ºC at night and up to 29ºC in the daytime, year round). October is a great month to go for a hit of sunshine, before it gets too rainy, and the air is fresher.

Where to stay: Its private-island resorts – North Island , Denis Island , the Six Senses Zil Pasyon – are possibly the most sensational anywhere in the world, a honeymooner 's dream (even William and Kate honeymooned at North Island, though the hotel is too discreet to admit it). For more options, see our guide to the best Seychelles hotels .

Flight time: 12 hours from London  When to go: May–December Average winter temperature: 28°C

What Mauritius has over its Indian Ocean neighbours, the Seychelles and the Maldives, is its size and natural diversity, and the fact that you can do it independently. Its beaches are still potted tropical paradises, and here you can rent a car and go exploring to find your own deserted cove, drive or hike up into its rainforested hills, take a boat out and go snorkelling or dive in its extraordinary underwater world. It has a bit of a reputation for overly groomed resorts – but it also has some of the finest beach hotels in the world, and you can find little boutique hotels right on the beach, too. Perhaps the best months to go to Mauritius are September, October and November, when it's hot but not too hot (averaging around 25-28ºC in the day, a cooler 17-19ºC at night), and at its driest (the rainy season in Mauritius is from January til April).

Where to stay: The most spectacular stay might be Shangri-La Le Touessrok , a private island escape with two pristine golf courses, a pagoda-style spa and a sushi restaurant. For a fun Soho house-style atmosphere try LUX* Grand Baie – there's a poolside DJ, a rooftop athletics track and a nightclub underneath its fabulous Asian restaurant Ai KISU. See our best hotels in Mauritius guide for more.

Papagayo beach Lanzarote

Canary Islands

Flight time: 3 hours 30 minutes from London When to go: Year-round Average winter temperature: 22°C

It's summer all the time in the Canaries, where temperatures average in the low-mid 20s all year round. As well as the well-known destinations – Gran Canaria , Tenerife , Fuerteventura, Lanzarote (pictured) – there are three smaller islands that are less visited and less spoilt: La Palma , El Hierro and La Gomera . They don't appear on the average British holidaymaker's mental world-map, and make for interesting exploring and winter sunshine.

Where to stay: The Ritz-Carlton in Tenerife made our Gold List in 2022 – a pastel-pink, Moorish palace mansion of a hotel with eight restaurants, a handful of swimming pools and a decadent spa.

Thai islands

Flight time: 13 hours from London When to go: November–March Average winter temperature: 32°C

The islands of Thailand are the stuff of castaway fantasies. White sand, rustic-chic beach shacks, a hammock gently swaying between two palm trees as a turquoise sea laps at the shore… There are dozens to choose from, and each offers something quite different, from the super-spas of Koh Samui to barefoot beach-bum in Koh Lipe, while Koh Lanta remains quietly chilled out with lovely places to stay on beaches that stretch for miles.

Where to stay: On Phang Nga, Six Senses Yai Noi has created the perfect castaway experience via a collection of stilted thatched-roof villas and a hilltop half-moon infinity pool. If you're headed to Phuket, Amanpuri has a special location on Pansea beach, plus an impressive selection of restaurants and a world-beating spa. For something the kids will love, the railway-themed InterContinental Khao Yai Resort has upcycled vintage railway carriages serving as suites, and an old-timey ticketing booth for a lobby. Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico

Flight time: 10+ hours from London When to go: November–March Average winter temperature: 24°C

Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, on the Atlantic Coast, has a magical mix of ancient and buzzy-right-now cultures. Swim in its green ceynotes, discover temples, salute the sun beneath the glitterball gods with fashionistas on the beach in Tulum . Mix it up in colonial Mérida . Go barefoot on Isla Holbox . The best time to come is during Britain's darkest months.

Where to stay: Beachside retreat Hotel Esencia , beloved by celebrities such as Bella Hadid and Lupita Nyong’o, made our gold list of the best hotels in the world for 2023. Likewise Habitas Bacalar , a small – just 34 rooms – off-the-beaten track stay that hosts local vendors for guests experiences and uses traditional Mayan cooking techniques within its restaurant. For more options, see our pick of the best hotels in Mexico .

Taghazout, Morocco

Flight time: 3 hours 50 mins from London When to go: December–March Average winter temperature: 21°C

Once a slightly rough-around-the-edges hippie town, Taghazout is now Morocco ’s top surf destination. The sleepy fishing village on the Atlantic coast hasn’t lost any of its old-fashioned charm, and goats still wander gormlessly through the dusty tangerine-coloured streets while fishermen haul in their daily catches from rickety blue and white boats. For serious surfers, winter marks the beginning of peak season, and as the swell rips up, the break-chasing crowds arrive. Temperatures usually hover around a very pleasant 20°C, but Saharan winds often push the mercury up much higher. The places to stay keep getting smarter, offering surf lessons in the day and rooftop yoga at sunset. And even if you’re not into surfing, there are plenty of beautiful hiking trails nearby, camel rides along the beach and excellent fishing too.

Where to stay: 15-room, Afro-inspired Munga Guesthouse is owned by former pro surfer Mounir Bouallaq.

Flight time: 7 hours from London When to go : October–March Average winter temperature: 24°C

The mid-Atlantic archipelago of Bermuda , mythical setting for Shakespeare's Tempest , is a land of pink beaches, pink houses and brightly coloured shorts. It is Caribbean in nature, though it's much closer to the UK – so shorter flight times – and has a distinctive character all of its own. Its pink-sand beaches are lovely, too. Those along the South Shore are the glory of the island. Horseshoe Bay is the best known and most crowded, though Warwick Long Bay, a short way along the coast, is just as alluring. At one end of Horseshoe there is a little patch of sand the size of a playground, cut off from the rest of it by a rocky hillock.

Where to stay: We like the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club , a 19th-century retreat set right on the capital's harbour.

Flight time: 10 hours from London When to go: Year-round Average winter temperature: 21°C

'The Golden State' is an appropriate nickname; California is one of the sunniest of US states, with mild winters, little rain and plenty of sunshine, especially in the south. For a classic USA road trip , hire a convertible and hit the Pacific Coast road. State Route 1 runs 550 miles from Leggett all the way down to Malibu. It has famously beautiful views much of the way, and the best section is that from San Francisco through Monterey and San Simeon to San Luis Obispo (where the road drifts inland), although north of San Francisco the route is wilder and less crowded. Aim to drive southwards, to be closer to the sea.

Where to stay: In Los Angeles, The Hoxton has brought a healthy dose of European flair to the West Coast. For a classic stay, Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica has come to embody the finest of So-Cal's barefoot luxury. In San Francisco, Proper is a buzzy stay beloved for its eclectic decor and perennially-packed rooftop bar, Charmaine’s. See our edit of the best hotels in California for more.

Bora Bora, Tahiti & French Polynesia

Flight time: One full day from the UK When to go: Year-round (though March is particularly rainy on Tahiti). Average winter temperature: 28°C

In both geography and spirit, just about as far from a drizzly British winter as you can get. French Polynesia is made up of 100-odd little islands in the South Pacific Ocean, the best-known of them Tahiti and Bora Bora. They are out of this world. Castaway fantasy, ringed by reefs; the water unbelievable shades of turquoise blue; the hibiscus flowers Gauguin bright; everything bright and light and hyper-real.

Where to stay: The Brando is the area's biggest-hitting hotel – owned by Marlon Brando and set on a stunning, living coral reef.

South Africa

Flight time: 12 hours from London When to go : November–March Average winter temperature: 27°C

It might be in another hemisphere, but South Africa is in the same time zone as the UK – which means no jet lag. In Cape Town and beyond there is stunning scenery, breathtaking beaches, as well as world-class wines and fabulous food. The country's most celebrated stretch of coastline is the glorious Garden Route. However in the other direction, a road trip through the Western Cape makes a rewarding alternative and the weather is particularly good in December and January. The less-explored Overberg Coast has wide beaches, good restaurants and wineries, moody seas at the southernmost tip of Africa, and a sensational coastal reserve that even the locals don't know about.

Where to stay: In Cape Town, check into The Silo , which sits on top of the Museum of African Art. Just over an hour's drive away Leeu Estates (pictured) in Franschhoek is an arty stay for post-safari relaxation.

Rajasthan, India

Flight time: 8 hours from London When to go: October–March Average winter temperature: 25°C

With its cities of pink, blue and gold, its romantic lakeside palaces and desert camps, Rajasthan is India 's brightest and most beautiful state. Go there and get carried away, whether you're getting stuck into the hustle-bustle streets of Jaipur , escaping into the desert around Jaisalmer, or floating wistfully across the lake in romantic Udaipur.

Where to stay: Six Senses Fort Barwara took almost a decade to transform the 700-year-old fort into a 48-suite hotel. Its small garden grows everything from desi roses to cauliflower, cabbage, guavas, and jamun, while the ancient temple spa blends Ayurveda with Six Senses’ inimitable touch. Flight time : about 10 hours from London When to go : November–December, and March Average winter temperature: 25°C

Once a hiding place for pirate treasure and prohibition liquor, Harbour Island in the Bahamas is a colourfully eccentric retreat where every night is a party and every day more vibrant than the last. The sand is pink, the turquoise water is home to green sea turtles and orange starfish, and yellow-throated birds fly about the trees. Days on the beach are long and lazy, and the time of day forgotten.

Where to stay: For a boutique stay, The Other Side is a small, gorgeous set of tents and shacks on Harbour Island.

Tel Aviv, Israel

Flight time: 5 hours from London When to go: March–May; October–November Average winter temperature: 23°C

Israel enjoys around 300 days of sunshine a year – and although winter here may not be as scorching as some of the other big-hitters, if you come towards the beginning or end it’s still warm enough to lie on a beach. The modern Middle Eastern metropolis of Tel Aviv is just a five-hour flight from London, making it an easy long-weekend hop. With its skyscraper skyline, striking Bauhaus architecture, avant-garde art galleries, world-class restaurants and hedonistic after-dark culture, this is the Mediterranean’s very own version of Manhattan. Jordan is full of surprises. The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, to give it its full name, has wonders both natural and ancient. It's true that much of the country is desert (seemingly endless Wadi Rum has even doubled as the moon in Hollywood movies), but there are also swathes of fertile land, bright and beautifully green. The waters of the Red Sea, off the coast of Aqaba, are bath-warm all year – and colourful, too, home to myriad fish, rays and turtles which make their home on the full-of-life coral reefs – and the best time to go for beach weather is February til May. Meanwhile, winters can be chilly in the north of the country, where snow caps the magnificent treetops of the Ajloun Forest Reserve; and the best months to go to ancient Petra, Amman and the north are March, April, May, September and October.

Oman is a less-glitzy, laid-back alternative to Dubai – only the landscape here is more dramatic: wide open spaces punctuated by oases and desert towns; valleys fragrant with rose and sandalwood; hidden coves with golden beaches and brilliant-turquoise water. The capital, Muscat dazzles in the year-round sunshine with its grand mosques and bustling souks. Up in the far north-east, the Musandam Peninsula has some of the best diving in the Middle East (whale shark and turtles are the big draw).

Where to stay: Six Senses Zighy Bay is on a golden sweep of sand backed by the impossibly steep Al Hajar Mountains. To feel truly isolated, camp in handmade Bedouin tents among the epic sand dunes of the Wahiba Sands south of Muscat – it's the best way to find authentic Oman.

Flight time: 13+ hours from London When to go: October–April Average winter temperature: 27°C

With its lovely Caribbean climate, guaranteed warm and sunny days and very little rain, Cuba ’s weather is at its most reliable during the UK winter. The beaches down on the south coast may get the best sunshine and draw the biggest crowds, but there’s plenty beyond the palm-fringed stretches of sand. Havana ’s got its colourful pastel-hued buildings, cigars and Cadillacs, while the perfectly preserved Spanish colonial architecture in UNESCO-protected Trinidad makes the city feel lost in time. Elsewhere, there’s no end of nature reserves, lush forests, mountains and tobacco plantations to explore.

Western Australia

Flight time : 20 hours from London When to go : November–March Average winter temperature: 35°C

The north-west coast of Western Australia is remote (it closed its boarders to the rest of Australia for over two years during Covid), beautiful and largely uninhabited. It has the least-visited of all Australia's coral reefs, Ningaloo Reef, a pristine 260km stretch of coral where thrilling encounters are fairly routine, whether you're diving or snorkelling. Turtles nest from November to March.

Flight time: 14+ hours from London (via Johannesburg) When to go: November–March Average winter temperature: 27°C

Astonishingly, Namibia gets barely half a million visitors a year – while neighbouring South Africa receives almost 10 times that number. But as travellers are slowly beginning to discover, this is one of Africa’s most fascinating destinations: rugged, intrepid and dramatic. More than a dozen new camps and lodges have opened up over the past few years, each one rocking a more creative approach to conservation. Namibia is usually touted as a year-round destination, but in truth the searing summer temperatures can be oppressive. November to March may coincide with the country’s wettest months, but with the rain comes a stunning transformation of scenery. The arid desert morphs into a lush green carpet; swarms of migratory birds arrive, and animals start breeding. Rain is localised and comes in short, sharp bursts, so it’s unlikely to have too much of an impact on your trip.

Belize ’s peak season coincides perfectly with the UK’s coldest months. Although temperatures remain high all year-round, January to March has the lowest chance of rain, making this an ideal time to explore this tiny adventure-packed nation. Bordered by Guatemala and Mexico, Belize attracts a fraction of the crowds of its neighbours, yet the natural and cultural diversity of this former British colony is truly compelling. It’s home to Mayan ruins, national parks, nature reserves and the Belize Barrier Reef (which forms part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the world’s second largest), all begging to be explored. The country’s jungly interior contrasts with a dazzling Caribbean coastline and hundreds of small cayes and islands, while a flurry of fresh hotels have all put eco-tourism at the top of their agenda.

Lamu, Kenya

Flight time: 17+ hours from London, via Nairobi When to go: December–February Average winter temperature: 32°C

When the Foreign Office slapped a travel ban on Lamu after the 2011 Somali terrorist attacks, it fell off the map. But now with sanctions lifted, crowds are starting to flock back to this far-flung African island that still feels totally unchanged by time. It’s long been a popular beachy bolt-on after an epic Kenyan safari, attracting curious travellers rather than flag-following sightseers. There are no vehicles, just donkeys and dhows, and the heady mix of Arab, Persian, Chinese, Indian and European cultures is mesmerising. After a few days in the UNESCO-protected Old Town, head south to the deserted beaches or drift over by dhow to the nearby Robinson Crusoe islands of Manda and Kiwayu. From December to February, temperatures average a steamy 32°C, making winter the prime time to come and enjoy the postcard-perfect empty sands and Lamu’s laid-back rhythm.

Where to stay: Seafront Peponi was built in the 1930s and has been a hotel since the 1960s, with an incredible pool, shady verandah and a list of former guests that includes Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall.

Zihuatanejo, Mexico

Flight time: 17+ hours from London (via Mexico City) When to go: December–April Average winter temperature: 30°C

Over on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, two beach towns sit side-by-side: Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo . They couldn’t be more different. Ixtapa, stacked with high-rise hotels and modern infrastructure was purpose-built for tourists, while, just round the bay, Zihuatanejo has kept hold of its old-world charm and sleepy-fishing-village feel. It’s a low-key beach retreat with genuine Mexican flair; fisherman flog their catches on the shore each morning, and the town centre is filled with historical cobbled streets and a buzzy market. Clutches of boutique properties sit right on the beach or overlooking the bay – which is a hit with surfers. It’s hot all year round, but October to April sees the least rain, making this a perfect spot for a hit of winter vitamin D.

Where to stay: We love the Thompson , which spotlights interiors from Mexico City-based studios.

Gulf of Chiriquí, Panama

Flight time: 13+ hours from London When to go: December–March Average winter temperature: 32°C

The Gulf of Chiriquí is nothing new – travellers have long been flocking to the white-sand beaches and dazzling turquoise waters of Panama ’s Caribbean archipelago. But the Pacific side is still significantly less discovered. There’s Islas Secas, a highly exclusive, privately-owned archipelago of 14 islands offering pristine beaches and one of the largest coral reefs in the Pacific, making it the perfect spot for diving and snorkelling. It's just under an hour from Panama City by twin-otter plane and is totally worth it for the privacy and seclusion once you arrive. The best time to come is from January to April, when the wet rainy season gives way to a few months of glorious sunshine and scorching temperatures.

Where to stay: Philanthropist Louis Bacon opened Islas Secas , home to four individually designed Casita sites and, three Tented Casitas, all located on one of the islands and sleeping up to just 24 guests.

São Tomé and Príncipe

Flight time: 20+ hours from London (via Lisbon and Accra) When to go: December–February Average winter temperature: 30°C

Marooned off the coast of Gabon, these tiny unspoiled islands together make up Africa’s smallest and least-visited country. But it’s thanks to the tiny tourist numbers that São Tomé and Príncipe still retain the allure of somewhere almost completely undiscovered. These jungly islands are home to more endemic species per square mile than anywhere else on earth – making them a bit like Africa’s very own Galápagos . January, February and March are the hottest months, when the dry and dusty winds blow straight in from the Sahara.

Where to stay: When South African billionaire Mark Shuttleworth opened up his first boutique hotel, Bom Bom , back in 2013, a new breed of luxury traveller arrived; since then, he’s opened two more, Roça Sundy and Praia Sundy . They’re all part of a wider project to create jobs and boost tourism – so you’ll be doing good while on holiday too.

Flight time: 13.5 hours from London UK (via Johannesburg, South Africa) When to go: April–November Average winter temperature: 26°C

This southern African country has the most astonishing coast – the beaches of Mozambique are out of this world. Great stretches of sand, wild and dune-backed; lapped by the beautiful Indian Ocean where humpback whales breach, where you can swim with manta rays in the Mozambique Channel. In the little islands of Mozambique's Bazaruto Archipelago , a protected marine park towards the south, there are sand-floor bars and simple thatched lodges, and the most sensational sandy islets in bluer-than-blue waters, like wisps of cloud in a summer sky. On the beaches of northern Mozambique you feel as though you're at the end of the world; off this coast are the dreamlike Quirimbas Islands, including heavenly Vamizi

For those keen to tread where others have not, Mozambique has a certain caché – savvy travellers have been returning, in small numbers, to this coast for the past 20-odd years – and a few new spruced-up hotels are starting to appear – but are keen to keep it all a secret. We say go now, before the secret is out.

Where to stay: In one of the 17 prettily stripped-back bandas on the southern peninsula's tip at Machangulo Beach Lodge .

Everyone is seduced by Laos's misty, mystic mountainscapes and its historic city, Luang Prabang From the moment the country opened its doors to tourism in the 1980s, visitors have talked in reverent tones about the sleepy town far upcountry on the banks of the Mekong River. It captivates. It weaves a spell. It carries some flavour of Indochina before the modern world got there.

Flight time : 11 hours from London When to go : December–May Average winter temperature: 26°C

Ecuador is less developed than Costa Rica , so expect an adventure — one with everything its Latin cousin has to offer, and more besides. Want wildlife? Take a luxury cruise into the Ecuadorian Amazon. Want surf ? Ecuador’s 1,400 miles of Pacific coast has plenty of that. And then there’s Quito , a much smarter capital than San Jose: a heady blend of steamy salsotecas, grand Andean vistas, and fabulous hotels in ravishingly restored colonial mansions (none more elegant than the peerless Casa Gangotena). You may have heard of another of its under-the-radar destinations, the Galapagos, too. Ecuador’s different geographical zones have their own, distinct weather patterns, but Europe’s winter is when the weather is warmest in Quito and the Highlands; driest in the jungle; and sunniest on the coast. Above: Laguna de Quilotoa is a beautiful crater lake in a secluded location of the Ecuadorian Andes.

Where to stay: Want an eco-stay? The five-star Mashpi Lodge is a sustainable, all-glass stunner hiding out in a cloud forest.

The Andaman Islands

Flight time: 14 hours from London  When to go: January–March Average winter temperature: 29°C

Every bit as dreamy as the Maldives, but more satisfyingly off-radar, the Andaman Islands have smartened up. This tropical archipelago — geographically closer to Myanmar and Indonesia than its owner, India — has always been brochure-beautiful, but only recently blessed with luxury digs. Those far-flung beaches and impossibly pure waters were more reward for intrepid surfers and gap-year backpackers until now. But it was only a matter of time before this primitive paradise turned upscale. Havelock is the most developed of the 572 islands, the vast majority of which are off-limits to visitors (and populated by indigenous tribes). It’s here that Indian luxury hotel giant Taj has newly scattered 72 thatched villas under a rainforest canopy, fringing the fabled Radhanagar beach, widely said to be among the best in the world.   Winter is the clearest, driest time of year — particularly January to March — with temperatures around 29C.

Where to stay: Jalakara is a boutique, teak-and-concrete sanctuary tucked into a banana plantation, where there’s no WiFi, no TV — just utter, nature-swathed serenity.

Karnataka, India

Flight time : 9 hours from London When to go : October–April Average winter temperature: 27°C

Karnataka’s beach scene is every bit as beautiful, but rather less glowsticky, than Goa ’s, though it shares the same coast (the state of Karnataka is further south). Gokarna beach, often listed among India’s finest sandy crescents, is chilled-out, powdery and palm-fringed; beach-goers more hammock-swinging yogis than UV-painted ravers. Better still, there’s more to explore beyond browning and sun salutations. Hampi ’s magical, ancient temples and bizarre, perilously-stacked boulders have fascinated wanderers and vagabonds for hundreds of years.

Where to stay: Try trekking and then de-stressing at the Taj Madikeri Resort & Spa , in the emerald, coffee- and spice-planted hills of Coorg.

Vietnam

Flight time: 12 hours from London When to go: November–February Average winter temperature: 27°C

Vietnam may well be one of the most fascinating, beautiful and charming countries you will ever visit. Saigon is wonderful, colonial and quirky; Ho Chi Minh City has one of the world's best food scenes. And the coast of Vietnam – oh, the coast! The beaches are extraordinary. So much untouched beauty. Little islands and dramatic bays to explore by boat. Out-of-this-world beach-chic places to stay, right on the sand. And even though it's easy-going and luxury can be found everywhere, it still feels like a secret, still some sense of discovery about a trip there.

Where to stay: On a stretch of under-rated Vietnamese coastline, Regent Phu Quoc is a luxury gem with all the trimmings for an idyllic long-haul fly-and-flop.

Flight time: 7 hours from London When to go: October–March Average winter temperature: 28°C

Ghana’s ‘Africa for beginners’ reputation tips a hat to the ease of a trip here — stable politics, developed towns, functional transport. But it misses all the other things that make Ghana great. Like the capital, Accra, a spirited city stuffed to the gills with red-hot food, nightlife and art. See Urban Grill, Afro-Latin fusion helmed by Andrew DiCataldo, of Manhattan’s once-loved Patria; rooftop club Carbon, owned by Nick House of Mahiki; and Gallery 1957, with its knack for edgy homegrown shows that blow up on social media. Then there’s the beaches: bonfire parties and street food at Accra’s own Labadi. Winter months are hot — temperatures average around 28°C — so you’ll be glad of a bracing Atlantic dip. Alright, there’s no Big Five, but there are safaris: walking with elephants, world-class birding, humpback-whale-watching. Plus there’s that handy hour’s time difference in common with South Africa, with only half the flight time.

Where to stay: The soothing White Sands Beach Resort & Spa , an exclusive private members’ club just an hour’s drive from Accra.

Tangier, Marrakech

Flight time: 3 hours 40 minutes from London When to go: March–May Average winter temperature: 17°C

From the 1920s to the 1950s, port city Tangier was a playground for the maddest and baddest bohemians: Beat icons like Burroughs and Kerouac; glamorously demon-plagued playwrights from Tennessee Williams to Jean Genet. But it wasn’t just the romance of boxy white-washed buildings fanning along a too-blue African shoreline that brought them. The city’s status as a near-lawless ‘international zone’ made strong drugs, strong cocktails and other strongly sordid entertainments all-too-readily available. The Moroccan monarchy later enacted punishment: the city was left to rot. A new king and a new attitude have revived it, widespread restoration inviting a smarter vitality, where cafés-cum-bookshops and speakeasies retain a raffish-cool, without segueing into seedy. In a hilltop casbah, El Morocco Club is where the leisure class make easy work of looking beautiful while slurping oysters and sipping Mojitos. And though chaotic Marrakech isn’t short of designer riads to escape to, Tangier is an infinitely jauntier option, and with T-shirt temperatures to boot.

The value of mortgage balances with arrears was 50.3% higher at the end of 2023 than a year earlier, a Bank of England report shows.

The value of these mortgages was £20.3bn - a reflection of how higher interest rates and the cost of living crisis is impacting British households.

Michelle Lawson, director at Lawson Financial, told Newspage  it made for "grim reading".

"People don't have bottomless pockets and this data places stark emphasis on that fact," she said.

"Household finances are set to spontaneously combust if the current level of pressure on them continues."

And Craig Fish, director at Lodestone Mortgages & Protection, told the industry website that the report "clearly demonstrated the real struggles being faced in the mortgage market right now".

He said while it was encouraging to see the number of new arrears cases decrease slightly, it was "likely" that this could change during the course of 2024.

Japan is considering its first interest rate hike in nearly 17 years, after narrowly avoiding a recession.

The economy grew by 0.1% in the fourth quarter of last year.

That leaves the Bank of Japan leeway to raise interest rates for the first time since 2007, with rates having been stuck at -0.1% since February 2016.

Negative interest rates are used in some countries to encourage commercial banks to lend and consumers to borrow more - therefore boosting economic growth.

The bank is set to meet next week to discuss its monetary policy.

By Jess Sharp, Money team, at the LIVE retail event in London

Amazon will introduce drone deliveries in the UK later this year, the company's UK manager has said.

Speaking at the LIVE 2024 event this morning, John Boumphrey told the crowd to "watch this space" for their arrival.

His speech focused on the use of AI in retail and the sustainability of Amazon.

He said the use of advanced robotics had been expanded within Amazon and had allowed new job opportunities to be created.

More than 500,000 robots have been added to the company's fleet and more than a million jobs have been created, he said.

Last year, the quickest delivery was just 75 minutes, he added.

Speaking about the use of generative AI, he said he was "confident" it would be the "most transformational change" to the retail industry since the creation of the internet.

Amazon has already been using the technology to create summaries of customer reviews and in the US it has created an AI shopping assistant called Rufus.

"This is only the beginning, we are all but a few steps into the marathon," he said.

Victoria Coren Mitchell has accused Ovo Energy of "wrongly" taking thousands from her bank account and suggested she will take legal action against the supplier.

The writer and TV presenter described "reaching the end of the road" with the major energy supplier, calling it the "most terrible service provider" she had encountered.

In a post on X, she claimed the supplier had taken "thousands of pounds" from her bank account that "they were not owed", and that it had "driven her to despair".

"Nothing but legal action will do for them now," she added.

In a poll, Ms Coren Mitchell went on to ask her followers which supplier they felt offered better service and said she had heard Octopus Energy were "trustworthy".

In response to her post on X, Ovo Energy said: "We're sorry about your recent experience with us. One of our senior complaint handlers has reached out via email to address this situation for you as a matter of urgency. We hope we can fully resolve this for you quickly."

Ovo Energy was founded in 2009 and has since grown to supply more than 4.5 million homes across England, Scotland and Wales.

It is among the big six energy companies in the UK.

An OVO spokesperson told Sky News: "We're always striving to provide the best possible experience for all our customers.

"Our teams work extremely hard to provide help and support and will continue to review lessons learned."

Basically, "non doms" are UK residents whose permanent home, or domicile, is considered to be outside the UK for tax purposes.

For years, the Labour Party has vowed to scrap non-dom status, saying it could raise more than £3bn a year, while the Conservatives have, over recent decades, kept the tax break in law.

However, Jeremy Hunt announced in his budget last week that the scheme, which helps some of the wealthiest people in the UK, would be abolished.

The chancellor said it would be replaced with a "modern, fairer and simpler residence system".

There will still be a four-year reprieve for foreign citizens living in the UK - but not thereafter.

He said this would raise £2.7bn a year.

What are the current rules?

A non-dom only pays tax on money earned in the UK.

To avoid UK taxation on foreign income, they can pay an annual fixed charge.

  • £30,000 for those who have lived in the UK for at least seven of the past nine tax years
  • £60,000 for at least 12 of the previous 14 tax years

After 15 years, UK taxes must be paid, though non-dom status could be reinstated if you move to another country for a time, then return to the UK.

British citizens can be a nom-dom but only if they have links to another country - this includes those who have chosen to leave the UK to live abroad indefinitely.

The exemption usually applies to people born abroad, or those whose father is from a different country.

The prime minister's wife

Rishi Sunak's wife, Akshata Murty, is one of this most high-profile nom-doms.

However, after being criticised in 2022, she agreed to pay UK taxes on all her earnings.

The London School of Economics found a non-dom saves more than £125,000 a year on tax, on average.

How many nom-doms are in the country?

According to latest HMRC data, there were 68,800 non-doms in the UK in 2022.

In that year, they paid £8.5bn in income, capital gains and employment taxes.

The number of people claiming non-dom status has fallen over the past 10 years after a change in rules stopped people using the benefit permanently.

Zonal pricing - whereby electricity costs differ regionally - could be introduced in the UK, it was announced today.

The government says Britons could save an average of £45 a year under the plan - which will now be consulted on.

But people in some regions could end up paying more than others.

How does it work?

At the moment there is lots of energy generation in Scotland, for example - but not as many consumers. Conversely, there is relatively little energy generation in London and the South East - where there are a lot of consumers.

Zonal pricing would aim to address this by seeing generators receive different rates based on the distance between their generating assets and their consumers.

It would be in their interests to move generation nearer to consumers.

But in the meantime, costs could be passed onto households - potentially spelling bad news for areas such as London and the South East.

This could be rectified by additional solar or wind farms (in theory, although it is really hard to build new wind farms, as  this article  explains).

Zonal pricing is used in Australia and several European countries, including Italy, Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

What does the industry say?

Energy regulator Ofgem has predicted significant saving for customers across Britain from zonal pricing in the long-term, of up to £51bn within 15 years.

Octopus Energy CEO Greg Jackson has backed the plans, suggesting they will not only help consumers but will attract new investors into the sector.

Any shortfalls?

Zonal pricing would be a push to more sustainable energy, getting generators closer to our towns and cities.

However, as this article shows, the strategy is volatile by nature and susceptible to sector-wide energy premiums and outside factors.

Following our posts on the investigation into vet costs and competition, we've been inundated with comments from readers sharing their experiences.

One common complaint seems to be the cost of medication - with people finding the same products available for much cheaper online.

Vets are obliged to write a prescription if you ask - meaning you could source medication yourself. But many vets now charge for prescriptions.

Here are a few of the messages we've received this morning...

My vet insists on charging for a written prescription for each item (3x life-saving medicine equates to three separate written prescriptions). Even though a written prescription lasts for six months my vet will only prescribe two months of medication at a time. Is this fair? Lynn
My dog is on regular medication, my vet charges me £35 for a 10ml bottle. I now get a prescription from my vet (who charges £19 for the prescription) and purchase it from an online pet drug company. This is £28 for a 60ml bottle. Pepper pot
My vet sold his practice to a big group. I was charged £16.42 for a bottle of hydration drink. I bought the identical drink from Amazon for £6.50 or a similar make for £4.50. The practice prices have increased a great deal since the sale. Fredtheleg
My vet was charging £50 for a product available online at £14, for long-term pain treatment for an elderly dog. This was provided each month without additional examination. When I asked for a prescription I was charged £27 but was required to have an exam every three months.  Martin Best
Why does my vet charge £108 for an inhaler, £19 for a prescription, when I can get the exact same product from my local pharmacy for £56? Jon_Perry
The vet we used increased the price of providing a prescription from £15 to £25. When I queried it they said it was due to inflation. The same vet charged over £30 for a special shampoo for our dog that was on sale from an online supplier for £16.99. Greedy. Kevin B
I have always had rescue dogs - up to three at a time. Now, due to the soaring costs of vets bills and insurance to keep up with the hiked prices, I have only got one which is having a knock-on effect with animal charity re-homing schemes. Very, very sad. Anomouse
The biggest issue with vet costs in our area is to do with teeth extraction. Our vet wanted to charge us £1,400 to remove some teeth with no guarantee that it wouldn't cost more, so we switched to another local vet who was recommended and the same procedure has been capped at £500. kevind

The British Veterinary Association has responded to a new investigation into pricing and practices.

The Competition and Markets Authority is launching the probe after an initial review raised concerns over weak competition, lack of information for consumers and overcharging for medicines.

One major concern flagged by the CMA is the buying up of vet practices into larger groups.

Now, BVA president Dr Anna Judson has sought to put across a view from within the industry.

She said "the veterinary sector has changed significantly over recent years" and so the investigation is a "valuable opportunity" to take stock.

But while "rising prices are a concern for everyone"...

"It's vital to recognise there is no NHS for pets. Whether they are employed by corporate or independently owned practices, vets deliver highly specialised, tailored care for the UK's pets and the cost is a fair reflection of investment in medical equipment, supplies and medicines, and the time vet teams dedicate to the care of each patient."

Dr Judson also suggested vets had been subject to abuse since the initial review began.

"It's really important not to pre-empt the outcome of the CMA's investigation. When the CMA launched its initial review, vet teams in practice found themselves on the end of really unpleasant, often abusive behaviour, which is unacceptable."

The UK's top housebuilder by stock market value, Persimmon, is experiencing the biggest share price fall on the FTSE this morning.

It said it was expecting subdued market conditions throughout the year as the short-term outlook is uncertain.

Profit dropped 52% in 2023, even more than analysts had expected. Share value fell 3.42%.

Meanwhile, following news that the competition regulator is further investigating the vet sector, after it found pet owners could be paying too much for medicines and prescriptions, the British pet supplies retailer Pets at Home saw shares fall 8.2% at one point before settling around a 2.4% tumble.

On the currency market, sterling is down against the dollar with £1 buying $1.277 and €1.1698.

Oil costs $82.76 a barrel.

The travel accommodation site has banned the use of indoor security listings globally.

Airbnb had previously allowed hosts to have cameras in common areas, as long as the devices were disclosed on the listing page before booking, clearly visible and not located in spaces like sleeping areas and bathrooms.

Now, the cameras cannot be used under any circumstances.

"Our goal was to create new, clear rules that provide our community with greater clarity about what to expect on Airbnb," Juniper Downs, Airbnb's head of community policy and partnerships, said.

Airbnb said it believed the change would only affect a small number of listings.

The new rules will come into effect on 30 April.

Hosts will still be able to use doorbell cameras and noise decibel monitors - however, they will need to disclose their use and general location before guests book.

"These cameras will also be prohibited from monitoring indoor spaces of a listing and are not allowed in certain outdoor areas where there's a greater expectation of privacy, like an enclosed outdoor shower or sauna," the company said in a blog post.

A news article in The Atlantic in 2019 reported on hidden cameras being used by Airbnb hosts.

Permanent daylight saving time? Politicians keep trying to make it a reality.

Americans are yet again preparing for the twice-yearly ritual of adjusting the clocks by an hour, and a group of politicians are sick of it.

Florida Sens. Rick Scott and Marco Rubio have used the upcoming time change to remind Americans about the bipartisan Sunshine Protection Act the U.S. Senate unanimously passed in 2022 to make daylight saving time permanent. The bill was reintroduced in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2023. Scott said in Friday a release the bill is supported by both lawmakers and Americans.

"It’s time for Congress to act and I’m proud to be leading the bipartisan Sunshine Protection Act with Senator Rubio to get this done," Scott said.

Most Americans - 62% - are in favor of ending the time change, according to an Economist/YouGov poll from last year .

To Change or Not to Change: Do Americans like daylight saving time? 6 in 10 want to stop changing their clocks. Do you?

Only Arizona (except for the Navajo Nation), Hawaii and the U.S. territories follow standard time yearound. In the rest of the country, standard time runs from the first Sunday of November until the second Sunday of March. But clocks spring forward an hour from March to November to allow for more daylight during summer evenings.

Federal law prevents states from following daylight saving time permanently.

Rubio's bill failed to make it to President Joe Biden's desk in 2022. Florida Rep. Vern Buchanan, R- Brandon, introduced the act in the House last March for the current congressional session.

"We’re ‘springing forward’ but should have never ‘fallen back.’ My Sunshine Protection Act would end this stupid practice of changing our clocks back and forth," Rubio said in a Tuesday release .

Time change bills across America

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures , 28 bills have been introduced this year regarding daylight saving time and 36 carried over from the previous legislative session.

About two dozen states are considering enacting permanent daylight saving time if Congress allowed such a change. Twenty other states have legislation under consideration to have permanent standard time.

Several states, NCSL said, have legislation dependent on their neighbors following the same time change.

We've tried this before, and it didn't go well

Daylight saving time was made official in 1918 when the Standard Time Act became law, but it was quickly reversed at the national level after World War I ended, only coming up again when World War II began. Since then, Americans have tried eliminating the biannual time change, but it didn't last long .

From February 1942 until September 1945, the U.S. took on what became known as " War Time ," when Congress voted to make daylight saving time year-round during the war in an effort to conserve fuel. When it ended, states were able to establish their own standard time until 1966 when Congress finally passed the Uniform Time Act, standardizing national time and establishing current-day daylight saving time.

Most recently, amid an energy crisis in 1973, former President Richard Nixon signed a bill putting the U.S. on daylight saving time starting in January 1974. While the American public at first liked the idea, soon "the experiment ... ran afoul of public opinion," The New York Times reported in October 1974 . Sunrises that could be as late as 9:30 a.m. some places in parts of winter became increasingly unpopular. It didn't take long for Congress to reverse course in October 1974.

Today, the public seems ready for another change, fed up with disruptions to sleep and routines, which research has suggested can contribute to health issues and even safety problems. For now, prepare to reset your clocks, and your sleep schedules, once again this Sunday.

Cefalù was originally a fishing village but is now one of the major draws on Sicily’s north coast.

Relaxed old-school glamour: springtime in Cefalù, Sicily

With its extraordinary architecture, maze-like streets and ever-present sunshine, it’s no accident that so many film-makers have used the town as a location

I was eating homemade crostata (jam tart) on a roof terrace in the Sicilian town of Cefalù and reading about Helius, the ancient Greek god of the sun. Sicily is supposedly the inspiration for the deity’s island in The Odyssey and this makes perfect sense – with more than 300 days of sunshine a year, Helius would like it here. The island is especially lovely in spring, when it’s quieter, cooler and more peaceful than in the scorching summer. Cefalù is an ancient fishing village almost exactly halfway along Sicily’s north coast. It’s prized by Italians as one of the island’s loveliest beach-side places. Barbara De Gaetani, a licensed tour guide who grew up here, told me the allure of the place is difficult to explain: “Many other places are gorgeous but not as seductive. You can feel life flowing here, and it’s no accident that many film-makers have used the town as a location.”

Cefalu, Sicily, map

Compared with Sicily’s ritzier spots, to me it feels more authentic and has a sort of relaxed old-school glamour. It’s also easy to reach by train from Palermo (about 50 minutes); from Catania, on the other side of the island, it takes around four hours, including a change in Messina.

The place is full of extraordinary Arab Norman architecture and, as with most Italian towns, I found there were almost too many beautiful buildings and churches to take in as I wandered slowly through the streets towards the cathedral in the central square. Inside, famed 12th-century Byzantine golden mosaics cover the domed ceiling. Up close they are even more extraordinary than they look in the pictures, and still shine brightly all these years later.

Cannoli pastries are perfect with an espresso.

I spent long moments looking up at radiant Christ Pantocrator (the Almighty) as he gazed down serenely, his fingers held up in a complicated arrangement that signifies “Jesus Christ”. According to legend, King Ruggero Secondo (Roger II) built the duomo after being saved from a terrible storm at sea. He’d knelt on the deck of his ship and prayed for help, promising to erect a cathedral to God’s glory if he made it back alive. After washing up safe and sound on the beach of Cefalù he set about keeping his end of the bargain.

After all that divinity, I continued through the maze of streets in search of something more prosaic, the lavatoio medievale, a washhouse built in 1514. Steps down from the street led to a series of low troughs, each with a stone scrubbing surface at one end. River water flows through bronze lion heads to fill the troughs before heading out to sea, and the place was still used well into the 20th century. I walked around the troughs getting my feet wet, imagining the washerwomen of the past, and feeling grateful for washing machines. A short walk away is the picturesque Porta Pescara gate, which frames the beach beautifully.

Behind the town is a steep cliff called the Rocca di Cefalù. The path was closed for maintenance when I was here but it’s open again now and a brisk 45-minute uphill climb offers panoramic vistas over the town and surrounding coast. There’s a ninth-century Temple of Diana on the way up (wear decent footwear as the path can be slippery).

One of the things I like most about Cefalù is that the beach is just a couple of minutes’ walk from the old town. And unusually for Sicily, it’s a generous crescent of soft golden sand, rather than a standard rocky beach. Perfect for bambini, it’s one of the reasons the town is so popular with Italian tourists. In spring you’ll need a jumper and light jacket as you walk along the promenade, and while the sea remains chilly, as a cold-water swimming addict, I enjoyed the blast of endorphins when I plunged beneath the waves.

The Palatine Chapel in Ventimiglia castle, Castelbuono.

Another day I walked 30 minutes east along the coast road to swim at Cala Kalura, a sweet pebbly cove with swimming-pool ladders down into the sea. If you get lucky, like I did, you might see a pair of kingfishers hunting for fish as the dusk falls.

The Cefalù food scene can be a little touristy but there are some lovely places. My favourite was La Brace , where the service is friendly and the menu includes traditional swordfish rolls and other delights. At the far fancier Triscele , I ate beautifully presented gamberi crud i (raw prawns) served in a swirl of citrus risotto on the romantic terrace.

Some of the best ice-cream in town can be found at L’Angolo delle Dolcezze along with cannoli , the dangerously addictive cigar-shaped sweet pastries filled with ricotta. Cassata , a cake layered with ricotta and covered in violently green icing, is a traditional treat, but for me nothing beats cartocci , doughnut spirals, again filled with the ubiquitous ricotta or, even better, with custard. Bar Duomo on the Cathedral Square is a great spot to enjoy one with a coffee and some relaxed people watching by day.

Cala Kalura … a 30-minute walk out of town.

At night, it’s the place for an Aperol spritz before dinner; I also enjoyed an aperitif of Castellucci Miano , an award-winning straw-coloured white wine, on the sea-view terrace of Le Petit Tonneau .

I stayed at Agrodolce B&B (doubles from €75, two-night minimum), where the rooms are simple, the location perfect and the breakfast heavenly. Rita, the owner, radiated Sicilian warmth as she served me homemade crostata along with croissants, fruit and espresso, and encouraged me to have seconds of everything. There are plenty of other mid-range options in town, but for a splurge, Le Calette (doubles from €323 B&B), on the coast east of town, offers luxury suites and stunning views.

On Rita’s recommendation, I caught the 7.45am bus from the station, winding up mountain roads towards Castelbuono, a small town famed for its funghi di bosco , mushrooms foraged from the forests. It was a vertiginous route and I was very glad not to be driving. Rita had suggested – insisted actually – that I come here to visit the Palatine Chapel inside Ventimiglia castle. Built in the late 17th century, it contains the skull of Saint Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary, and is gloriously overdecorated: bright gold walls are covered in maximalist stucco depictions of allegories and religious figures in baroque style. I spent a long time looking around, feeling dizzy and uplifted all at once.

I’d read that there were hidden paintings inside the Matrice Vecchia church on Castelbuono’s main square, but I couldn’t find the light switch and the dark steps down under the altar looked forbidding. Eventually I gave up waiting for the priest and ventured down using my phone torch.

Houses line the beach in Cefalù.

The crypt is covered with frescoes dating from the medieval ages to the Renaissance – including some alarming depictions of skeletons enthusiastically climbing out of their coffins on Judgment Day. I was glad to resurface into the sunlight, and spent a while sitting watching the donkeys walk up and down the narrow streets. They’re used as rubbish collectors because the lanes are too narrow for dustbin lorries, and looked pretty grumpy about it.

I stopped for lunch at Ristorante Nangalarruni where the charismatic owner, Giuseppe, and I argued about mushrooms. I don’t like them at all but he was adamant that if I tasted his pasta I would completely change my mind. We made a deal. He brought me s paghetti cacio, pepe e funghi di bosco and watched anxiously as I twirled my fork and took a bite. He was right: the dish changed a lifetime of bias, and remains one of the best meals I’ve eaten in Sicily. Later I caught the bus back to Cefalù and took a long siesta to sleep off all those carbs – another perfect day on Helius’s sunshine island.

50 cheap travel tricks for holidaying in 2024

Discover all the tips, tricks and hacks you need to get the most bang for your travel buck.

L adies and gentlemen, please fasten your seatbelts, stow your tray table and return to your seats, as the best travel budgeting tips are about to land.

No matter whether you’re spending euros or rupees, francs or pounds, US dollars or Aussie cents, there are savings, big and small, to be had on your next holiday.

Discounts, bonuses, extras and incentives, and two-for-one deals help keep cash in your pockets, while clever planning, shrewd budgeting and the amazing offers on the all-new deals hub on escape.com.au will ensure you don’t blow the bank every time you travel.

1. Order the set menu

Escape content director, Jana Frawley, has two words when it comes to fine dining on a European holiday – prix fixe. “Literally meaning ‘fixed price’, these multi-course menus, often with a glass of wine included, are excellent value and allow you to see the bill upfront. It’s a great way to experience fine food and keep your budget intact.”

2. Skip peak seasons

It’s hardly a hack to say you can save on travel by avoiding weekends or school holidays. But did you know you can also save by travelling during a country’s off season – Thailand in July, Vietnam in late January or Fiji in November.

4. Save 5% on escape.com.au

Know how to use sites that offer travel deals to your advantage. For example, on the new deals hub at escape.com.au you get five per cent off your first order with code ‘iloveescape’ plus you can easily locate the best deals by looking for the tags highlighting a saving.

5. Monitor flight prices

Airlines like Qantas and Virgin Australia let you set up alerts to notify you when airfares for your route drop. If you’re not particular about the airline you’re flying with, aggregators like Skyscanner and Kayak also allow you to do this.

6. Choose odd flight times

“I often book a flight that leaves early or arrives in the middle of the night and book a night at the airport hotel before or after I fly. Airport hotels are often way less expensive than city hotels.” – Simone Mitchell, Escape associate digital editor

7. Skip the taxi queue

Public transport in some cities can be daunting, especially fresh off the plane from the airport, but it is always cheaper than a taxi or Uber. In Singapore, for example, a taxi from Changi Airport to the city centre is around SGD20 (about $23) while an MRT train trip is SGD1.74 (about $2).

9. Swap destinations

Europe will be heaving (more than usual) during the northern summer thanks to the Paris Olympics, so swap out popular European hotspots for more affordable and less crowded ones – the Albanian Riviera instead of the French or Italian ones, or Malta instead of the Greek Islands.

10. Take two phones

“Take an old phone and buy a local SIM when you land at your first destination. Your phone will need to be unlocked (meaning, it’s not restricted to use on particular networks only) and you will need to have a newish phone that supports 4G or 5G so that your coverage isn’t patchy.” – Dilvin Yasa, Escape’s Doc Holiday

11. Hack your care hire

“If you’re a spontaneous traveller, book a relocation car hire. You’ll have to drive a set route and find a way home but rentals can start from just $1 a day and some include a fuel allowance.” – Stephanie Yip, Escape E-commerce travel writer

12. Hand over your credit card

“Ditch the debit card when asked for pre-authorised credit on a cruise or when checking in to a hotel as it could take up to 10 days to reverse the charge and leave all your spending money tied up. Instead, hand over a credit card.” – Dilvin Yasa, Escape’s Doc Holiday

14. Check the right boxes

Flip the way you search for flights and make your destination ‘Explore Everywhere’ on Skyscanner. Enter dates, your departure airport and leave the destination open. You’ll get an instant picture of which places are cheaper to reach.

15. Pay before you go

There’s one resort inclusion that can save a family hundreds of dollars – breakfast. If you’re staying in a destination with few dining options outside of the resort, like Fiji’s Coral Coast or Bali’s Nusa Dua, book a resort where breakfast is included. A family of four can save hundreds on a seven-night holiday in this way.

16. Delay breakfast time

Speaking of breakfast …“If you have breakfast included, pop in closer to the end of service, that way it’s technically brunch and you’ve got one less meal to pay that day.” – Stephanie Yip, Escape’s E-commerce travel writer

17. Hop on, hop off

“The double decker sightseeing buses you can jump on in many cities are an easy and affordable way to get your bearings in a city, plus get a basic tour in for a fraction of the price. They also run frequently so they offer flexibility.” – Kerrie McCallum, Escape’s editor in chief

18. Pay by the day

Hit the slopes with the family without the hefty price tag – just go for the day. Resorts like Selwyn Snow Resort in NSW and Mt Donna Buang in Victoria offer dedicated snow play day entry from $25.

20. See for free

Dilute a costly stay in the Olympic city with a day or two of free touristing: picnic beside the Eiffel Tower, explore the Jardin du Luxembourg, window shop (and people watch) on the Champs Elysees and wander through the Pere Lachaise Cemetery, the last resting place of Oscar Wilde and Jim Morrison.

21. Ask the expert

Good value lies in local knowledge and nothing beats your hotel concierge. They can help you find the best value places to eat, cheap days at museums, free walking tours and more.

22. Stay on the outskirts

You often pay a premium to stay in the city centre of any country. But in most parts of the world, like Paris or Rome, public transport to city centres is cheap and dependable – especially trains. Going suburban and ‘commuting’ is the perfect way to see more of a city for less.

23. Buy a visitor pass

“Always visit the official tourism website of the city, region or country you’re visiting and look for visitor passes. The New York City Pass, for example, will save you 40 per cent on the city’s top five attractions and the London Pass offers 50 per cent savings on major attractions.” – Jana Frawley, Escape content director

24. Pick a pick-up spot

Check if it’s cheaper to hire a car at the airport or city before booking. Often the city is more affordable, so jump on a train or taxi to the city to pick up your car.

26. Check the fine print

Car hire can attract a substantial excess in case of damage to the car. It’s worth checking your travel insurance or credit card provider to see if you already have car hire excess cover and save up to $40 a day by waiving the fee at the car hire counter.

27. Download city guides

Major cities often have free city tours led by volunteers (who appreciate a tip for good service). Better still, show yourself around with a free audio tour through popular apps like STQRY Guide and TripScout.

28. Share loyalty points

Get your kids to contribute to the next trip by pooling their Frequent Flyer points into the family kitty. Many airlines like Etihad, Qantas, Emirates, Virgin and Hawaiian Airlines have programs which allow you to do this.

29. Get on your bike

“Instead of hailing down cabs to get around, hire one of the many ebikes dotting the streets in Europe. It’s cheap, fast and a great way to feel the vibe of a city as you pass through different neighbourhoods.” – Rowena Ryan, Escape digital editor

31. Catch the train

Eurail Global Pass is great value plus it allows cheeky day trips into bordering countries. With the whole of Europe able to fit inside Australia and trains travelling up to 320km/h, visiting a neighbouring country is easy.

32. Find cheap petrol

One of the biggest expenses on a road trip is fuel. Apps like the NSW Government’s Fuel Check and Australia-wide apps like Petrol Spy can locate the cheapest fuel along your route.

33. Avoid penalty costs

Don’t get roped into unnecessary fees at the car hire counter – return your car with a full tank to avoid expensive fuel charges on return; avoid extras like a GPS (that’s what your phone is for) and bring your own child booster seats.

34. Be self-sufficient

Hunt out resorts that have self-contained accommodation facilities to help you reduce your eating out bill. The Whitsunday Apartments on Hamilton Island are discounted by 25 per cent on Escape.com.au and feature apartments with fully-equipped kitchens.

36. Ditch annoying fees

Don’t get stung with cancellations and booking changes for holiday homes on platforms like Airbnb and Stayz, which are set by the individual host not the platform. On the major platforms, you can filter your search by cancellation policy.

37. Check the currency

When cruising, pre-purchase on-board items that may be in a foreign currency, like gratuities where they are not included. This locks in the AUD charge at the time of purchase and avoids currency fluctuations.

38. The power of one

Travelling solo? Single tickets for theatre performances in places like London’s West End and New York’s Broadway are sometimes discounted on the day of the performance as they are keen to fill single seats.

39. Insure your trip

Take out travel insurance from the time you pay out any non-refundable costs, not when your holiday starts.

41. Avoid the crowds

When booking tours, aim for the more affordable shoulder season when demand drops. The weather may not be the best, but it’s not the worst either and crowds will also be down.

42. Tip tips

Check that your cruise fare includes gratuities as a lot of operators don’t include them, and they could be a hidden cost that can add $100-plus to a seven-day cruise per person.

43. Book smart

Booking airfares on a Sunday can save up to 20 per cent on domestic flights and 18 per cent on international flights and departing on a Friday can save up to 23 per cent. Avoid departing on Sundays, which are the priciest days, on average, to start a trip.

44. Choose local currency

When a credit card terminal or ATM offers to convert the amount into Australian dollars, DECLINE. Choose local currency every time. Fees and horrific conversion rates are built into the Aussie dollar amount displayed.

46. Stay local

Eliminate expensive flights on your next cruise by departing from your home port or choose offers that include free flights. Sites like Cruise Traveller have a Fly Free tab which shows you all the packages that include free flights as part of the deal.

47. Get the deals

All ski resorts share special offers and updates on free activities so sign up for e-newsletters and follow their social media so you don’t miss out.

ESCAPE: Snow, Chair lift, Whistler, Canada. Picture: Pamela Saunders

48. Avoid single supplements

Travelling solo can sometimes feel like you’re paying double. But a growing number of tour operators offer deals which waive the solo supplement, like G Adventures, Wendy Wu Tours and Explore Worldwide.

49. Stay loyal

Large hotel chains often have a program you can sign up to for free that gives you access to discounts and perks. For example, the Marriott Bonvoy program has a fifth night free offer that can be redeemed at any of their almost 8700 properties worldwide.

50. Be currency clever

“Look at exchange rates before you book an international flight. One Aussie dollar, for instance, currently buys US65c. Add tips and taxes and suddenly you’re having to re-mortgage your house every time you buy something. My tip: go to a country where you get more bang for your buck.” – Jana Frawley, Escape content director
