Wales Millennium Principality Stadium Tours and Tickets

Last Updated on May 11, 2023

As part of my world stadiums tour, the most recent visit was to the Wales Millennium Stadium (now renamed the  Principality  Stadium ). So let’s take a look at the Millennium Stadium tours and show you what’s to expect.

Wales Millennium Principality Stadium

Table of Contents

Why Do the Millenium Stadium Tour?

This is an extremely unique and special stadium when you consider the fact that the stadium is the only one of its kind in Europe, which is built in the middle of a city centre.

Every other major sports stadium in Europe is on the outskirts or outside the city it is in.

With the Millennium Stadium, it is placed smack bang in the middle of the city centre, placed between the train station and the castle.

From Cardiff Central train station it is literally a one minute walk to the stadium! In other words, it’s very accessible and very easy to find.

Is It Called the Millennium Stadium or the Principality Stadium?

The original name is the Millennium Stadium and in reality, a lot of people still call it by this name. In recent years though, the name officially changed because it is now sponsored by the Principality Building Society, hence the name change.

From having lived in Cardiff for 10 years myself, I found that more people tend to call it by its original name, the Millennium Stadium, but this might perhaps change over time.

Our Experience

Wales Millennium Stadium entrance for tours

Rugby and Football at the Millennium Stadium

The stadium was built and finished in 1999 and is now home to the Welsh national rugby team .

The Welsh football (soccer) team do not use this stadium and play their home games at the Cardiff City ground, because it is believed that not enough fans would fill and use the stadium for football games, given the stadium’s capacity of just under 75,000 fans.

The stadium tour itself is fascinating, one example being the definite differences in design between the home and away changing rooms.

The changing rooms in the Principality Stadium

The home changing rooms have been designed to create a den-like atmosphere so that players can psyche themselves up.

The away changing rooms, on the other hand, are quite different in design and somewhat more basic in style, designed to give the away team less comfort.

Speedway at the Stadium

Speedway in Cardiff Wales

The stadium hosts a number of different events annually and, on the day we visited, the stadium was set up ready for the annual British Speedway Grand Prix .

The stadium also hosts the Wales Rugby 6 Nations home games, concerts and the Monster Jam big truck series.

Brief History of the Stadium

The stadium itself had to be turned around to fit in between the existing buildings, making the job of making this sizeable stadium very costly and a complex project.

The final cost was over GBP £120 million, with around 1/3rd of that cost private funding. It was in September 2015 that the name change came about to the Principality Stadium.

Personally, despite all of the money, this will bring into the stadium, I wonder how much money is lost in not leaving the name as the Wales Millennium Stadium, given how strong that is as a brand name.

Press area in the stadium tour

Do the tour and you will have a chance to sit in the same seats as the managers and players do for the press conferences.

This normally hectic and crowded room after a match is a part of the guided tour and worth seeing and a great photo opportunity.

The tour overall took approximately one hour and the tour guide was clearly very knowledgeable and very informative. Whatever your mobility, this is a relatively easy tour to do and I would certainly recommend it!

Millennium Stadium

Millennium Stadium

Club: none | Opening: 1999 | Capacity: 74,500 seats.

History and description

The Millennium Stadium, officially called Principality Stadium, is the national stadium of Wales and the third largest stadium in Britain.

The stadium was built to host the final at the 1999 Rugby World Cup and replaced Wales’ previous national stadium, the Cardiff Arms Park, which by that time had gotten severely outdated and lacked the facilities to stage such final.

Construction of the stadium began in 1997 and was completed in 1999 at a total cost of £114 million. The first match played at the stadium was a rugby friendly between Wales and South Africa. The first football match was a friendly between the Welsh and Finnish national teams in March 2000.

During the reconstruction of Wembley Stadium , the Millennium Stadium hosted the FA Cup and League Cup finals as well as the FA Community Shield.

In its first decade, the stadium was the standard playing venue of the Welsh national team, however with declining attendances and smaller modern alternatives available in the Liberty Stadium and Cardiff City Stadium , the Welsh team has since played most matches at one of these smaller stadiums.

In 2016, the stadium changed name to Principality Stadium following a naming rights sponsorship deal.

In 2017, the Millennium Stadium hosted the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Juventus (4-1).

The stadium has a fully retractable roof, which can be opened in 20 minutes and is being held up by four 90-metre high masts.

How to get to the Millennium Stadium

The Millennium Stadium is located in the centre of Cardiff almost opposite Cardiff Central Rail station.

Frequent trains connect Cardiff with London Paddington, Birmingham New Street, and Bristol.

If arriving by car, make your way to the centre of Cardiff and find a parking place, which will almost always be at walking distance from the stadium.

Address: Westgate Street, Cardiff, CF10 1NS

Eat, drink, and sleep near the Millennium Stadium

The Millennium Stadium’s central location makes that there are plenty of eating and drinking options in the near vicinity of the stadium. Cardiff’s city centre lies just east of the stadium and is filled with pubs, bars, and restaurants.

The same is true in terms of hotels. There are many hotels located on all sides of the stadium in various price categories. Click here  for an overview of hotels near the Millennium Stadium.

Millennium Stadium tours

The Millennium Stadium offers guided stadium tours that include the home dressing room, press conference suite, players tunnel, VIP suites, and President’s Box. The tours last between 60 and 75 minutes.

Tours run seven days a week up to seven times a day. Check the online booking form for days and times.

For more information call +44 (0) 29 2082 2228 , or email [email protected] . The tour costs £12.50.

Wales national team tickets can be bought online at the website of the Welsh FA.

It is 20 years ago today that the Millennium Stadium hosted its first Rugby Match, a friendly against South Africa, in front of about 27,000 spectators, ” And I was there!!” It was a great occasion, particularly as I was a Guest of Welsh Mens Lawn Bowls Manager, Gareth Humphries. We sat on the half way line, just behind Nick Mallett and the Springbok retinue. I wonder if anyone knows the value of the Ticket from that match?

Fantastic stadium right, in the heart of Cardiff. Went to the Ireland v Canada rugby world cup group match in 2015. With the roof closed added, to the atmosphere. On a nice day take a walk through the city centre, down to the harbour. Some beautiful buildings to enjoy.

I have watched 3 welsh rugby games at the stadium, I travel from Kidderminster to see wales play ,I have enjoyed every game we watch ,and would like to say thanku to the ticket people who help me out when I buy my tickets, as I carnt do heights u all ways help thank you

The Millenium Stadium is excellent having a good view from most seats.

I have also been to the San Siro,Old Trafford and Wembley and it is in my opinion as good as a experience as any of those I have mentioned.

It is easy to get in before game and out after the game, the facilities are very good for refreshments and toilets.

All in all a great day even if your team doesn’t win.

Tour 2024: Arsenal and Liverpool tickets on sale

Old Trafford.

  • Share With email

The first match tickets for Manchester United's Tour 2024 are now on general sale.

Fans who registered for email alerts were the first to know about two huge summer friendlies in the United States and to receive a code for the exclusive 24-hour pre-sale. Now that has ended, tickets for both games are openly available via Ticketmaster. United will face Arsenal on Saturday 27 July in Los Angeles , at one of the world's most impressive sports arenas - the 70,000-capacity, state-of-the-art SoFi Stadium.

TICKETS ON SALE NOW!   adcard

Our fans attending that one will be hoping for a repeat of last year's Stateside meeting, when  Erik ten Hag's men beat Mikel Arteta's Gunners 2-0 in New York  with goals from Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho.

Liverpool will be our opponents on Saturday 3 August in Columbia , at the University of South Carolina’s (USC) William Brice Stadium. Demand for tickets at the 77,559-capacity stadium is expected to be high as English football's two most successful clubs go head-to-head on US soil for the first time since 2018.

Erik ten Hag's men are the only team who have stopped the Merseysiders scoring this season, having earned a precious away point in the Premier League with December's 0-0 stalemate at Anfield, where Rasmus Hojlund was only denied a decisive goal by Alisson's excellent save. The arch rivals' next meeting is due to take place on the weekend of 6 and 7 April, although an earlier clash is possible if both clubs reach the FA Cup quarter-finals on 16 or 17 March and are drawn to face each other. To book tickets to see United take on Arsenal in Los Angeles, or Liverpool in Columbia, visit Ticketmaster.com.

For the first time in five years, Liverpool will embark on a preseason tour of the United States.

After touring Asia for two straight summers, the Reds will be heading back to the U.S. this year for the first time since 2019.

So far, Liverpool has announced two matches of the tour. The first will be against Arsenal in Philadelphia on July 31 and then three days later, the Reds will take on Manchester United at Williams-Brice Stadium, home of the University of South Carolina football team.

“We are proud to announce our highly anticipated return to the USA, providing a great environment for the squad to prepare for the season ahead,” said  Liverpool’s commercial director Ben Latty.

Here are the fixtures that have been announced so far for Liverpool's summer tour of the United States. Information on how to purchase tickets will be added in the coming days.
