Top 13 Things to Do in Jodhpur, Rajasthan

jodhpur night visit places

Jodhpur, the second-largest city in Rajasthan (albeit pleasingly unspoiled by haphazard development), has a fascinating past. Located on the edge of the Thar desert, about 155 miles from the border with Pakistan, Jodhpur is, in fact, where the eponymous pants got their name from! These unusual pants were designed by the Maharaja of Jodhpur's son, Pratap Singh, and worn by his polo team when visiting the Queen of England in 1897. It is famous for its blue buildings, initially painted to signify that they were occupied by Brahmins, the highest caste in India.

This list of top Jodhpur attractions and places to visit will give you a diverse city experience. Jodhpur Heritage Walk conducts an immersive three- to four-hour guided tour through the city. If you have a spare day or two, visit nearby Bishnoi village or Osian, where you can see carved temples and go on a less-touristy camel safari.

Explore Mehrangarh Fort

Imposing Mehrangarh Fort, which rises above the "Blue City," is one of the largest and most famous forts . As impressive as it is, as a well-preserved heritage structure, there's so much more to discover inside. The fort has been privately restored, and its museum has an outstanding display of royal memorabilia, including about 15,000 items from Maharaja Gaj Singh II's collection. It also has the only professional museum shop in India. The cultural performances that happen daily at various places inside the fort, as part of the particular focus on folk art and music, are another highlight. Plan your visit with this complete guide to Mehrangarh Fort .

Want a romantic evening dinner? The Chokelao Mahal Terrace restaurant serves traditional Rajasthani cuisine, which sparkles below. The Fort is also an evocative setting for music festivals. Don't miss the annual Rajasthan International Folk Festival in October and World Sufi Spirit Festival in February .

Ride the Jodhpur Flying Fox

Adventure lovers can't pass up the unique opportunity to zip-line with Mehrangarh Fort as the backdrop. The circuit has six zip lines and takes around 90 minutes to complete. Groups of up to 12 people depart at appointed times. It's located on the north side of the Mehrangarh Fort.

Relax at Jaswant Thada

In honor of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, this intricately crafted cenotaph (empty commemorative tomb) was built in 1899. It features white marble lattice screens and whimsical domes, while the inside is adorned with portraits of Rathore rulers. It's a peaceful place to relax and enjoy stunning views of the Fort and city. Many a tired tourist sprawls on the front lawn to recuperate after sightseeing.

Wander Through Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

The Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park was developed in 2006 to restore the natural ecology of a large rocky wasteland area next to the Fort. Neglected for many years, the park was overrun by an invasive thorny shrub. After the bush was eradicated, more than 80 native species of rock-loving plants from the Thar desert were grown there. The Park extends 70 hectares (around 200 acres) of rehabilitated land and has a walking trail. It's interesting to explore at different times of the year, as its foliage changes with the seasons.

Check Out the Clock Tower and Old City Markets

A trip to Jodhpur wouldn't be complete without visiting the bustling Old City. Many people choose to stay in this area, too, as some of the best budget hotels in Jodhpur are located there and have fabulous Fort views. The Old City's famous landmark, the clock tower, stands at the heart of it—and it's still working! Next to it, Sadar Market retains a traditional village bazaar feel. It's chaotic and colorful and sells almost everything, including handicrafts, spices, saris, and fabric. If you feel uncomfortable in crowds, you might prefer to take a walking tour rather than explore the market area yourself, as the congestion can be overwhelming. These walking tours offered by Jodhpur Magic and Virasat Experiences are two recommended options.

Dine Overlooking the Step Well

Travel and Still life photography/Getty Images

An exciting Urban Regeneration Project is being undertaken to transform the Old City into its former glory, but with a vibrant and hip spin. As a result, Jodhpur has a newly restored yet ancient stepwell, located just north of the clock tower. Built in the 1740s and called Toorji ka Jhalra, it sat stagnant for years until the owners of the new heritage boutique RAAS hotel purified the pool and sandblasted the steps. The area has been turned into a contemporary square with cool cafes and shops, including a Good Earth home decor store and a branch of Jaipur-based Gem Palace. A secret door at the RAAS hotel will take you directly to Step Well Square. Step Well Cafe has the same owners as RAAS and provides the best view over the stepwell. It serves Continental and Indian cuisine, plus alcohol. However, its menu is quite limited.

Stroll Along the Streets of the Blue City

Unlike the crowded clock tower area, the blue part of Jodhpur behind the fort, known as Navchokiya, is refreshingly quiet and devoid of tourists. Don't miss spending some time leisurely strolling along its streets. It's also possible to go on a guided walking tour of the area to learn more about it. You can even stay amid the blue houses: Some of the top options in the area are  Singhvi's Haveli ,  Jewel Palace Haveli , Rani Mahal, and Jaswant Bhawan Homestay .

Tour the Area Around Gulab Sagar

Tim Makins/Getty Images

About 10 minutes walk north of Toorji ka Jhalra stepwell is Gulab Sagar. This 18th-century lake played an essential role in Jodhpur's traditional water management system. Not only does it provide a superb spot for photographing Mehrangarh Fort in the background, but there are also many interesting step wells and temples hidden in the lanes around it. They include Mahila Bagh Ka Jhalra step well and Kunjabihari Temple dedicated to Lord Krishna. You can discover them on this Step Wells and Temples walking tour .

Marvel at Umaid Bhawan Palace

Magnificent Umaid Bhawan Palace, completed in 1944, was one of India's last grand palaces to be built. The royal family of Jodhpur still occupies a section of it. Most of the remainder has been converted into a luxurious palace hotel, and unfortunately, it's off-limits to anyone who's not staying there. If you can't afford $600 or more per night for a room, you can still get a glimpse inside the palace by having a pricey dinner at one of its restaurants or visiting the museum. The museum mainly displays old photos of the Maharaja and his family. There's a vintage watch and car collection as well. If you're into that kind of thing, it's worthwhile going there. Otherwise, you may be disappointed as you'll get to see very little of the palace.

Take a Cooking Class at Spice Paradise

Spice Paradise is a spice shop run by a kindhearted husband and wife team (their unique masala chai blend has been refined and perfected over the years and is highly recommended). In their humble kitchen, they also conduct Indian cooking classes, which are hugely popular with foreigners. Along with delicious recipes, you'll get to meet a lovely family and gain priceless insight into Indian culture. If you don't have much time in Jodhpur, do book in advance as classes are often full.

Sample Some Indian Sweets

If you love not just Indian sweets but all kinds of Indian snacks, you'll want to visit the iconic Janta Sweet Home , renowned for making some of the best treats in Jodhpur. They're fresh and delicious, and the range is vast. Try the Mawa Kachori, a prestigious dish that originated from Jodhpur.

Shop at Sambhali Boutique

Sambhali Boutique is the perfect place to pick up some high-quality Jodhpur handicrafts and clothing in Indian and Western styles. All products are made by underprivileged women taught and employed by the Sambhali Trust. Items include silk and cotton camels and elephants, block-printed scarves and curtains, and shoulder bags. Custom orders can also be placed.

If you're looking for cheap accommodations, the Sambhali Trust operates from a very charming little guesthouse (the Durag Niwas Guest House ) that's a hit with backpackers. Long-term stays with all meals provided are possible.

Visit Mandore and Mandore Gardens

Mandore was the capital of the Marwar region before Jodhpur was founded, but now it's in a neglected state. There's an old fort, an eclectic collection of temples and cenotaphs, and a small museum in the Mandore Gardens. The gardens are beautiful, albeit unkempt in places, and used as a local picnic spot. They're worth visiting for the fantastic architecture and history of a bygone era. The best time to go is during the week when it's quietest. If you love monkeys, you'll find plenty there! But be careful that they don't snatch your food!

Get ready to skip past persistent cows in narrow blue-painted alleyways, press your way through colorful saris, and walk in the king’s footsteps in the magnificent Mehrangarh Fort overlooking the Blue City. We are in Jodhpur, the second largest city in colorful Rajasthan, “the land of kings”.

While I will recommend a minimum of a 2 days Jodhpur itinerary to get the most out of your visit, I will also give a suggestion for places to visit in Jodhpur in 1 day. This way you have an option in case you don’t have the opportunity to stay longer than a day.

Rajasthan is said to be the most colorful state in India and tremendously popular among travelers. In fact, it was the first part of India I ever visited. And I loved it!

What to expect from Rajasthan? Buzzing North Indian street life, pushy sellers, incredible fortresses, endless desert land, working camels, colorful saris, and Indian travelers shoving you into their family photos as if you are a life-long friend. There is so much beauty in Rajasthan !

What to expect from Jodhpur? All the above plus a lot of blue. Lots and lots of blue buildings.

Also, expect getting lost, eating way too spicy food, scamming attempts, and sore feet from all the walking. Hold on to your valuables, put on your best smile, and keep your finger on the trigger of your camera at all times and you will have an unforgettable time!

Travel safety in Jodhpur

Before we look at the Jodhpur itinerary, let’s talk travel safety. India is, in general, a country known for scams, pickpockets, and group violence. So why should you even want to go to India? And even more so, why should you want to go to the second largest city in Rajasthan?

India is a country of diversity. So, for all the bad and evil you might meet, you meet just as much kindness. Or even more. Generally, a lot more.

In my experience, India is a place to take precautions, keep your eyes open, respect the local norms, and speak to the locals for advice. And Jodhpur is no exception.

You will have to choose who you trust, so make yourself a favor and talk to people openly and fearlessly while you listen to your gut. If your gut says “mieeh?”, then talk to someone else that your gut shuts up around.

Also, as in any other crowded city, keep your valuables close and make sure you don’t leave your bag unattended.

Always agree on any price for transport upfront.

Note: If a bicycle taxi or Rickshaw gives you an incredibly cheap price, it means they will stop by a shop on the way. They get a commission from the shop if you go in and look. That means the cheap price is for a shopping trip and spending way more time to get to your destination. If you are ok with that, fine, but if you want to get to your destination directly, you will have to talk about a different price.

Get travel insurance

I highly recommend getting your travel insurance even though you don’t plan to get scammed or robbed. Also, I highly recommend not being scammed or robbed at all.

However, in case something should happen, you are not alone. I always use World Nomads as I find them easy to deal with all the way from getting a quote, understanding the quote, and contacting for assistance.

There are plenty of good travel insurance companies out there, but World Nomads are definitely my first pick!

Best time to go to Jodhpur

October to March are the coolest months and normally around 20+ degrees Celsius in the day time. It is the absolute best time of year to go sightseeing and on any desert safari.

May to June are the hottest months and temperatures can rise above 40 degrees Celsius in the day time. If you decide to travel in this period, remember to drink a lot of water and use sunscreen all day.

July to September sees lower temperatures and higher humidity. This is the low season in Jodhpur and while you can avoid the crowds, you can also save a lot of money on accommodation .

Where to stay in Jodhpur

Around the clock tower.

The best place to stay in Jodhpur for a night or two is definitely around the Clock Tower. The Clock Tower is a main landmark constructed a century ago in traditional architecture. Surrounded by the Sardar Market twisting through narrow streets with strongly smelling spices, colorful textiles, loud vendors, running children, and the odd cow chewing something from the ground that wasn’t grass.

The animated square is only a 20 minutes’ walk from the main attraction in Jodhpur, the Mehrangarh Fort. It is also central to other attractions and close to the airport.

Paota is a good option to the central Clock Tower, and only a 10 minutes’ drive away. You find both a central train station and bus station in Patoa so you get easily around from there.

If you want to make a difference

Durag Niwas Guesthouse is a welcoming guest house that has also funded a charity organization, Sambhali Trust. They empower women and children in underprivileged communities and have a shop at the premises too where you can buy handmade clothes and little cotton animals. Everything is handmade by the women in the supported communities.

The guest house is situated close to the Gaushala Stadium, 4 km from the Mehrangarh Fort and 4,2 km from Umaid Bhawan Palace. It is central enough that you can walk around if you don’t want to get a Rickshaw everywhere.

The buzzing market in Jodhpur

Now, let’s look at a Jodhpur itinerary for 1 day and for 2 days. If you only have one day, feel free to pick from either day beneath. Anyway, I have tried to put what I think is the most important tourist attractions in the first day to make sure you get the most out of your 1 day in Jodhpur.

jodhpur night visit places

Places to visit in Jodhpur in 1 day

Mehrangarh fort.

09:00-12:00

Opening hours 09:00-17:00

Entrance Fees:

  • Indian visitors: 100 Rs.
  • Foreign visitors: 600 Rs.
  • Camera: 100 Rs.
  • Video camera: 200 Rs.

I recommend that you have your breakfast before 9:00 so that you get to the fortress for when it opens. You should spend a maximum of 3 hours in the fort so that you get the most out of your day in Jodhpur.

With only one day in Jodhpur, you should definitely start off with visiting the majestic Mehrangarh Fort. Sitting on a 120 meters high cliff and spreading across 5 kilometers in the heart of the Blue City it cannot be missed.

Dating back to 1438, the fort is protected by its 35 meters tall and 20 meters thick walls. Canons are situated on the wall, though today they are mainly there for tourists to photograph in front of the implausible view of the blue-painted city.

There are several palaces and temples situated inside the fortress, as well as a museum with artifacts from Rajasthan kings and the Mughal dynasty.

If you have time for the Jodhpur itinerary over 2 days, you can take a ride on the zip-line from the north side of the fort. Find the ticket office for Flying Fox to get your tickets. It is a circuit that takes about 90 minutes with 6 different zip-lines and really worth the ride.

Mehrangarh Fort is the most important of the places to visit in Jodhpur in 1 day

Make time for lunch after visiting the fort. There are several restaurants in and around the fort.

Take a rickshaw to the Umaid Bhawan Palace, it only takes about 15 minutes from the fort, depending on traffic.

Umaid Bhawan Palace

14:00-16:00

Opening hours 10:00-16:30

Entrance fees:

  • Indian visitors: 30 Rs.
  • Foreign visitors: 100 Rs.
  • Children (5-11 years): 10 Rs.

Umaid Bhawan Palace was fully constructed back in 1943 after 14 years of building. The massive structure became one of the largest residents in the world. Today, it is the main home of the former Royal Family of Jodhpur with a total of 347 rooms.

One part of the palace is managed by Taj Hotels while another part is a museum for visitors that shows the history of the Jodhpur Royal Family. You can also see an incredible collection of classic cars outside the palace.

Get a rickshaw back to the Clock Tower by Sardar Market. This is only a 10 minutes’ drive by rickshaw depending on the traffic.

Umaid Bhawan Palace is a must visit place on your Jodhpur itinerary

Clock Tower and Sardar Market

The rest of the day you should walk around the Sardar Market. It is probably one of the best things to do in Jodhpur, just to experience the everyday life at the market. Also, walking through the narrow streets is a great way to explore the fusion of smells and colors this city has to offer. Don’t get surprised if your path gets blocked by a massive cow. They have first priority always!

When you get hungry, you can find a few restaurants nearby for dinner.

Sardar Market is one of the places to visit in Jodhpur in 1 day

Jodhpur Itinerary – day 2

If you did the zip-line day one and didn’t get the time to do everything, feel free to change any attraction of day 2 so you get to experience what you want to.

Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

08:00-10:30

Opening hours April to September: 07:00-18:30

Opening hours October to March: 08:00-17:30

Entrance fee:

  • Adult: 100 Rs.
  • Guided walk: 200 Rs.

Get your breakfast before 08:00 so you can get to the park at 8:00. This way you will get the most out of the day.

Next to Mehrangarh Fort, the large, rocky wasteland of Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park spreads across 70 hectares. The rocky wasteland was newly cleared of intrusive plants that were brought from Central America nearly a century ago. Now, the native desert plants get a chance to grow back. The park was founded in 2006 to protect the area and is now a beautiful place to walk around.

To get from the Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park to Jaswant Thada you can take the 15 minutes’ walk down Rajputana Rd. and turn left into Jaswant Thada Rd. Or you can take a Rickshaw that will be there in 3-5 minutes.

jodhpur night visit places

Jaswant Thada

11:00-13:00

Opening hours: 09:00-17:00

  • Indian visitors: 15 Rs.
  • Foreign visitors: 30 Rs.
  • Camera: 25 Rs.
  • Video camera: 50 Rs.

Also known as the Taj Mahal of Mewar, Jaswant Thada is a must-see marble structure surrounded by lush green trees by the lakeside. Inside the carefully carved white building, there are beautifully decorated memorials with dedicated artwork and paintings of the former Mewar rulers.

The memorial house was built by Maharaja Sadar Singh in 1899 and named after his father, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. The royal cremation ground sits just next to the building.

While at the Jaswant Thada you can also appreciate the nearby lake.

Jaswant Thada

After visiting Jaswant Thada it is time for lunch. If you want, you can take a Rickshaw directly to Mandore Garden and find a restaurant around there. It takes about 20 minutes.

However, you also have the time to take a rickshaw towards Gulab Sagar Talab Lake where you find quite a few restaurants nearby.

I definitely recommend trying a thali while in Jodhpur, which is normally the cheapest way of eating. It consists of one big plate with several small dishes and sauces. Often, they come and top up while you eat. This way you can try traditional Indian food the local way.

Mandore Garden

15:30-17:30

Opening hours 08:00-20:00

Entrance Fee: 100 Rs.

Mandore Garden is located 9 kilometers outside the city, though one of the most beautiful places to visit. It should definitely be on your Jodhpur itinerary if you have two days to spare.

Mandore used to be the ancient capital of the Pratiharas who ruled the region back in the 6 th Century AD before Mehrangarth Fort.

The green gardens are spotted with ancient ruins and cenotaphs and calm lakes.

In the evening you can explore Mandore and get your dinner there, or you can take a Rickshaw back to the clock Tower for a stroll and dinner in the nearby areas.

Responsible tourism in Jodhpur

Jodhpur is, without doubt, full of impressions and new experiences. However, there are a few things you should keep in mind as a responsible tourist to the Blue City.

The Blue City Jodhpur

Photographing people

Before you take photos of people, no matter how colorful and traditional looking, remember that they are people, just like you and me. Ask them if it is ok for them that you take their photograph. Especially children, you should always get consent from an adult family member.

I can’t stress this enough! Never give money to people performing with animals . Never take photos with animals. Also, don’t ride animals . The animals deserve being free, and as long as tourists pay people for anything related to animals, they will keep being maltreated, malnourished, and used for our amusement.

In Jodhpur, you might see cobras in baskets, you might be offered a camel ride or a selfie with a monkey. There is also a zoo in the city. Instead of spending money on these activities, look up a way to see these animals in the wild in an ethical way.

Waste management

Waste management in India is probably non-existent. Anyway, I recommend that you throw your rubbish in a bin instead of the street. At least you have done your part.

I also suggest you bring your own filtered reusable water bottle like a Life S trawGo .

Get your Life S trawGo filtered water bottle here

I hope you get an incredible experience in Jodhpur!

17 best places to visit in jodhpur (india) in two days.

Cazzy Magennis

Bradley and I visited the historic area of Jodhpur in October and I was most excited about the prospect of this being a “blue” city. You’ll see why soon.

As a part of our 3 weeks in India , we were able to spend 2 days in Jodhpur. As such, I thought it was appropriate to create a list of great places to visit in Jodhpur in two days.

I’ve also included some information on when the best time to visit Jodhpur is, how to get there and where to stay and more. This means you’ll have everything you need to know for a fantastic two days in Jodhpur with my mini Jodhpur travel guide.

Travellerspoint

When is the best time to visit Jodhpur?

The best time to visit Jodhpur is between October and March. The weather is bearable (still very warm) and it tends to be the tourist season in India with more frequent buses and flights etc. We visited in October and I thought I was a perfect time.

How do you get to Jodhpur?

walking to Mehrangarh fort

There are a variety of ways to get to Jodhpur, depending on where you are coming from.

‍ Flying: you can get to Jodhpur via flights from Delhi and Mumbai. If you try to fly from any other airport then it will just include a connection in either of these cities. Flights range from £25-50 depending on the time of year, availability and when you book. We always use Skyscanner to check for flights.

Train: India has an extensive train network and it’s convenient and well priced, but everything tends to book up quickly in the popular season so if you want 1st Class or 2/3rd class AC then you’ll need to book relatively quickly.

I recommend going into a travel agent to book your train tickets. Basically, the online train ticket buying network is a bit of a mess, and whilst 12go. Asia offer some options, if your chosen option isn’t available, then a travel agent can usually help. They take a fee of 50 pence, which is worth the hassle it saves you. ‍

fort view

Bus: There a multitude of buses running to Jodhpur from both directions (Udaipur/Jaipur). The bus is the option we opted for from Udaipur. Our bus costs 600 rupees (around £6) and that was for an air conditioned bus with Rain Travels. I have to say I was pretty impressed by the bus, it was clean, spacious and the aircon worked. We did arrive an hour later than planned, but it’s India, and I would expect that everywhere you go.

Where is the best place to stay in Jodhpur?

Castle View Homestay! This where were Bradley and I stayed for our two nights in Jodhpur. It was beautiful. Not only was it decorated in beautiful traditional Indian decor, but the rooms were also clean, cozy and it offered STUNNING views of the fort. A rooftop restaurant is available and the views are worth the stay. The WiFi was also good, alongside aircon and friendly staff.

A Perfect Stay.

The top things to do in Jodhpur

Now is for the good part, a list of the best places to visit in Jodhpur in two days. I am going to list this out in a form of the top things to do in Jodhpur, then at the end, I will break it down in what you should do on day one and day two.

1. Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh fort

Okay, let's start with the absolute best of the places to visit in Jodhpur in two days. Mehrangarh Fort is an area bursting with beauty and history.

This is one of the largest forts in all of India and it stands a beautiful 400 feet above the city overlooking the beautiful blue houses. The fort was constructed in 1459 AD by Rao Jodha. I’ll not go into too much of the history as your entrance includes an audio guide which will tell you everything you need to know.

But, fun fact I just discovered whilst researching this blog: This is where the cave scenes of the Dark Knight Rises were filmed.

This place offers amazing views, (which is the thing I was MOST interested in- I love a good view), and it looks beautiful lit up in the evening.

views over blue city from fort

There are cafes inside where you can catch a bite to eat or a drink, and there are even a few shops, but I am pretty sure you are paying above the odds because it’s in a tourist spot.

Ps if you are white as snow like me, then expect a lot of locals asking for selfies, and to hold their babies (I dunno why lol).

selfies in india

There is a really cool moment near the ticket office where you can see the pigeons flock off together in one mass movement which is pretty cool for photographing. BUT, watch they don’t poop on your head. ‍

birds at Mehrangarh fort

Cost: 600 for adults (including audio guide) 100 camera fee and it’s open 9 to 5 each day. Students can get a discount.

TOUR: Book your half day tour now!

2. Umaid Bhawan Palace

unmaid palace

This is one of the worlds largest palaces and the fun fact...you can stay here if you want. But it’s not going to be cheap. This was actually the last royal palace built in India before independence.

It’s the youngest palace of India and it’s truly an architectural splendor and a truly royal experience. It’s built on sprawling grounds of 26 acres, perched high above the Blue City of Rajasthan. It’s worth a visit even if you don’t have the pleasure of staying there.

Not only that, there is a museum that’s open to all. It houses some marvelous specimens which include exhibits of porcelain wares, glass, memorabilia, and information on the building of the palace.

The museum is open from 10 AM to 16:30 PM Monday to Sunday and it costs  30 per person for Indians, 100 per person for Foreigner tourists and 10 per person for Children (5-11 years).

TOUR: You can visit this spot and many others in Jodphur with this brilliant tour.

3. Explore the abandoned Mandore Gardens

mandore gardens

Those in search of something unique should definitely include this in their list of places to visit in Jodhpur in two days. It’s not only beautiful, but it’s abandoned meaning, you’ll probably have it all yourself (well, almost!)

Mandore is actually the old capital of the Jodhpur kings which already makes it interesting. It was abandoned when the majarias of Jodhpur moved to Mehrangarh Fort.

Nowadays it’s filled with luscious green gardens, cheeky monkeys, stunning architecture, beautiful birds and some street vendors. At first, it looks like a typical green garden, but start walking and you’ll feel like you’ve just stepped into Cambodia among Angkor Wat- minus all the crowds.

There are some beautiful structures to be discovered with the intricate architecture still present outside and inside. Just wander and you’ll discover new things on each turn.

There is also a museum within the complex that charges a small fee.

The gardens are open every day from 8 am to 8 pm but the museum closes at 5 pm.

4. Jodhpur Stepwell

Jodhpur Stepwell, India

If you consider yourself a bit of a daredevil, then you’ll like this place to visit in Jodhpur. Bradley wasn’t aware that this was a thing to do in Jodhpur, and I am kind of glad he didn’t because I am pretty sure he would have jumped, and I almost died when he did the Mostar bridge jump, so Yano, my heart might not take anymore jumps haha.

Anyway, the Jodhpur Stepwell is an urban jump. Apparently, it was constructed in 600 AD but it’s now the not so official swimming pool of Jodhpur. Basically you can jump from a high height, however, it’s not technically allowed, so when the police turn up, you leave. I don’t think you’ll actually get into trouble if you’re caught, more of a “don’t come back” sort of job.

This isn’t my cup of tea, but if you like action, then why not jump! It doesn’t cost you anything either.

This is a VERY popular Instagram photo nowadays, so if you want to visit there and other Instagram worthy spots, then check out this Jodhpur Instagram Tour.

5. Clock tower and Sadar market

elehants in market centre

The clock tower is one of the most popular landmarks in the old city of Jodhpur. Leading from the clock tower is the Sadar market which is perfect if you want to wander and pick up from Indian sweets, spices, textiles and much more.

If you want to try some local delights such as the famous Lassi, then this is the best spot to do so. There is also a little cafe called Cafe Royal near the clock tower in which you can enjoy a cup of coffee whilst people watching through the hustle and bustle. I’ve included the TripAdvisor link for you to check it out.

6. Jaswant Thada

Jaswant Thada, India

This is a BEAUTIFUL white marble memorial built in 1899 in memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. It's a clear example of architectural brilliance and beauty in India. If you love architecture as much as I do, then this site should be at the top of the list of places to visit in Jodhpur in two days.

Every city in India as a Taj Mahal sister and this white marble wonder of Rajasthan is often called the Taj Mahal of Marwar.

The main memorial is built like a temple, featuring finely carved sculptures and lovely domes. Visitors can view beautiful portraits of the various rulers of Jodhpur.

The cremation ground is surrounded by magnificently carved gazebos, a small lake, and an exquisite multi-tiered garden.

The best time to visit is October to march (so that peak season we mentioned at the beginning) and it’s open 9-5 daily.

You can get a tourist bus or taxi to the area, or you can rent out a moped.

Costs are as follows:

  • ‍ Indian visitors (adult/child)- Rs.15
  • Foreign visitors (adult/child)- Rs.30
  • Still camera pass- Rs.25
  • Video camera pass- Rs.50

7. Explore the blue houses of the blue city

blue city

The blue city is famous because of its blue houses so you can’t visit them. For those who stay “outside” the blue arena, you can easily get a tuk-tuk to the blue houses, or walk amongst them after you have visited the main fort attraction.

If you are staying in a property that has a fort view, such as the Castle View Homestay we recommended, then you’ll be staying in a blue house anyway so it’s easy to get photos.

If you are just visiting the blue city for a couple of hours, then I recommend dining in one of the restaurants that offer a rooftop view. It’s a glorious place to enjoy your food with that magnificent view.

8. Dine by candlelight with a view of the fort

Mehrangarh fort

Speaking of dining with a view of the fort, the best time to do so is when it hits sunset. The view of the fort at night is spectacular. It’s lit up and it’s truly a fantastic sight. It’s the perfect romantic setting, or just laid back setting to enjoy a few drinks and a meal with friends.

I really can’t recommend it enough. If you’re staying out of the blue city then head in for dinner- trust me on this!

9. Mahadev Temple

We never went here personally but I’ve included it on the list of places to visit in Jodhpur in two days because it looks awesome. According to my research, it’s a little difficult to find, but aren’t all great places difficult to find. Ask a tuk-tuk driver to take you, or if you have a moped, then drive until you see a temple in the distance from the fort.

It offers unique panoramic views that you won’t get elsewhere, plus since it’s difficult to find and others don’t really know about it, you’ll have it all to yourself.

10. Mehrangarh Viewpoint

This carries on from that fort you’ve just discovered. About a five-minute walk from Mehrangarh Fort is a small trail of stairs which lead to a temple and a collection of phone towers. You then continue onto the rocks and the walls of the fort which brings you a beautiful view. It’s a perfect sunset spot and you can watch people do ziplining (we speak about that on the next point).  This is one of the great places to visit in Jodhpur at night.

So, if you’re looking for a unique and I’d say, romantic spot to catch the sunset, then put this on your list of places to visit in Jodhpur in two days.

11. Go zip lining through the historic sights

local children in jodhpur

Speaking of ziplining, you can partake in this AWESOME activity whilst seeing historic sights. The zip line is done with a company called flying fox, and they actually have zip line locations all over Asia and South East Asia, so if you’ve been traveling there before, you may have heard of them.

Basically, they’re a high quality and safe company to zip line with.

You’ll get to fly high over the battlements and crenellations of Rajasthan's most majestic fortress, the Mehrangarh Fort and two desert lakes, trek through the Rao Jodha eco-park and enjoy the best view of Mehrangarh and the Blue City of Jodhpur.

A truly breathing taking experience.

It costs 1800 for adults and 1600 for children and students if you book online. The website is here with all the information you need.  It’s cheaper to book online, at the fort they charge a lot more money. So book online for the best deal.

12. Visit the lakes

Kaylana lake.

lake

If you want a peaceful lake view, then include this spot on your top places to visit in Jodhpur in two days. I’d actually visit after you’ve seen the fort and you’re exploring the blue city because it’s all very close by.

It's located 8 km to the west of Jodhpur on the Jaisalmer road and it’s a good picnic and sunset spot and it’s good for bird spotting if you’re interested in that.

Balsalma Lake

Balsamand Lake jodhpur, India

This is another beautiful lake to visit. This is a popular picnic spot that is surrounded by hills and gardens which you can walk around and visit. They’re filled with beautiful roses, and pools covered with lilies. Next to the lake stands the Balsammand Palace, an artistic eight-pillared palace with three entrance gates. Maharaja Sur Singh got the palace constructed in 1936, as a summer pavilion.

Located just a mere 2 km from the lake is a quirky temple called Maha Mandir. It’s a hundred pillared temple that is dedicated to Lord Shiva. A walled town is built around the temple. It’s a pretty cool spot.

13. Rao Jodha Desert rock park

Rao Jodha Desert rock park, India

Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park was a project created in 2006 in an attempt to try and restore the natural ecology of a large, rocky wasteland next to Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur.

The park itself is around 170 acres and you can enter the visitor's center. Of course, it offers beautiful views of the fort too. Throughout the year there are lots of beautiful and unique flowers that are common and pop up, so regardless of when you visit, there will be something different on offer.

Opening times:

  • April to September - 7 am to 6:30 pm
  • October to March - 8 am to 5:30 pm

Entry cost:

  • ‍ Adults Rs.100
  • School Students - Free
  • Hire a Naturalist for a guided walk -Rs.200/-

Since this is an all-year activity, it should alwaysbe on your list of places to visit in Jodhpur in two days.

14. Chamunda Mata temple

stupa in jodhpur

This temple is located on the south end of the fort, so it can be visited when you are exploring the fort. It’s a holy shrine that’s dedicated to Chamunda Devi. It’s beautiful whether you’re religiously inclined or not, and it offers a cool view over the surrounding city. If you’ve only got 2 days in Jodhpur then this should be included in your itinerary.

15. Take a CityWalk with blue city walks

The Blue City and Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur. Rajasthan, India

If you want to get to know a city with a guide, then a city walk is the best way to do it. The blue city walking tour and experience will take you through a 3-hour walk to discover a city that was apparently “planned in the form of a human body, where every part of it resembles different organs of the body” (what!?).

I recommend this for those who really want to immerse themselves in the history of Jodhpur and learn a little more. It’s also a good way to meet other travelers if you’re traveling solo, so pop it on your list of places to visit in Jodhpur in two days.

There are advertisements for this tour on almost every hotel, or you can book online. The price is 1,900.

16. Rent a moped and explore

local market of jodhpur, India

If you are brave enough to rent a moped (only joking), you don’t need to be brave, it’s really not THAT bad driving in Jodhpur. Anyway, there is a moped rental place located near the clock tower to the center of the town called “Jodhpur new bikes and rental” and it costs 400 for a day, and an extra 50 for an extra helmet.

They will say that “man wears a helmet, the woman doesn't need one”, but for god sake please wear a helmet.

Basically get your moped and drive. Drive anywhere and everywhere. Look for unique points on google maps and you’ll probably find new temples or brilliant views. You can also use your moped to take day trips out of Jodhpur if you are staying for longer than 2 nights. We discuss some great day trips at the bottom of this post.

17. Go shopping at the “high street”

If you arrive in Jodhpur via bus, then you’ll probably drive through the “high street” to get to your accommodation. The reason I call it a high street is that it’s literally a long strip of shops that include designer shops and market style shops. Perfect for picking up a few forgotten items from your India packing list . So if you do feel like doing some upmarket shopping then this is the place to do it. The whole area is quite modern and has a European vibe to it.

Best day trips from Jodhpur

Distance from Jodhpur: 68 km so around 1 hour and 30 minutes.

This is one of the great places to visit near Jodhpur and you can use a moped to get there. An oasis in the Thar desert, this area is known for its temples. osia day trip

Distance from Jodhpur: 77 km so around 1 hour 30 minutes.

Another great Jodhpur sightseeing spot and one that you’ll need a moped or some form of transportation to visit. This city may be quaint, but it's home to lots of wonderful temples, so temple lovers will be happy.

Gardens and stepwells are also available and it's probably most famous for Om Banna shrine. A visit here is believed to make your journey safe. So a nice place to visit in your Rajisitan adventures.

ATMS in Jodhpur

If you are using a Revolut card (the best travel card and exchange rate on the market, so why wouldn't you be!?) Anyway, the only bank we found in India that lets you withdraw money for FREE is the Bank of Baroda, and there are at least two of these in the town center (near the clock tower).

Getting around Jodhpur

  • ‍ Use Uber or Ola: both uber and ola are available in Jodhpur, so use them to get to where you need to be. It’s far easier than haggling as you’ve got a set price, and they know your destination (which is also sometimes hard to explain) ‍
  • Use rickshaws: if you don’t have access to the internet (local sims are cheap from Airtel) then use a rickshaw, just try not to get ripped off. I would recommend asking your hotel what the price is for a local for a particular journey, and try and get as close to that price in your negotiations! ‍
  • Walk: lots of places are within walking distance, but make sure you’ve got some good shoes on!

Sights of Elektrostal, Moscow region

2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06

In the Moscow region there is a small cozy town Elektrostal. Its sights for the most part have no historical value due to the fact that the city has a relatively small history. But for a visiting tourist or city dweller, they will be of interest. There is something to see, where to go to have an exciting leisure time.

Today the population of the city is 158 thousand people. Until the beginning of the 20th century there were several small workers' settlements here. After the opening of the electrometallurgical and equipment factories, the place began to be called the natural boundary of Calm. The construction of the railway made this settlement accessible, and workers and families flocked here to earn money. In 1925, the station was named Elektrostal, and the rapid increase in population allowed the village to receive the status of a city.

attractions elektrostal photo

The founder of the city is a prominent Russian industrialist Nikolai Vtorov. It was he who opened the plant here, creating, in fact, a city-forming enterprise that is still operating. In Soviet times, it was a closed facility, and it was not easy to get to work here.

Today Elektrostal is a promising industrial city with a great future and a heroic past. It bears the proud name "City of Military and Labor Glory".

You can learn about the sights of Elektrostal with descriptions and photos here. There are places for walking, outdoor activities and cultural development.

sights of the electric steel of the Moscow region

Those who come to the city by train are met by a monument to the metallurgist. It was installed in November 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the Elektrostal plant. The attraction is made in the style of constructivism. The monument quickly won the love of the townspeople, because this city is supported by ordinary workers.

Elektrostal attractions photo with description

Elektrost altsy and the founding father of the plant, Nikolai Vtorov, are honored. In 2002, a monument was opened in honor of him, which became a landmark of the city of Elektrostal. The bronze sculpture is installed on the site where once stood a monument to the leader of the world proletariat, V. I. Lenin. Times change, characters change. Today, the plant, founded a century ago, is the largest in Russia. Vtorov himself, whose fortune was estimated at 60 million rubles in gold, according to Forbes magazine, was the owner of the largest capital at the beginning of the century. He was a banker, an industrialist, an entrepreneur, a man of action.

The monument was erected byinitiative of the townspeople who wished to perpetuate the monument to the great man.

One of the popular places for spending weekends and evenings among citizens and guests of the city is the Park of Culture and Leisure. Here you can ride attractions for children and adults, play slot machines, rollerblade or bike. The park is divided into two zones. Fans of unhurried walks in the fresh air make a promenade on the Quiet Alley, and those who prefer outdoor activities flock to the Entertainment Alley. The park has a summer stage, where concerts and cafes are regularly held.

Elektrostal attractions

Until 1999, there was no central museum among the attractions of Elektrostal in the Moscow Region. The expositions were exhibited in schools, the house of culture, in factory museums. The city was closed, so there was no large influx of tourists and visitors. The appearance of the historical and art museum made it possible for residents and guests of the city to learn a lot of useful information about their native land, the formation of the production process, and the difficult years of the war. The exposition consists of paintings by local artists, historical artifacts, household items, documents, books and much more. The collection is updated regularly. It also hosts outdoor exhibitions, which are always popular with the townspeople.

One of the main attractions of Elektrostal, the photo of which is available to almost every resident or visitor, is the Main Alley. On herpassers-by like to stroll along shady paths, townspeople rest by the fountain after a hard shift at the plant. Flower beds are the decoration of the alley. In 2006, a flower festival was held here for the first time, which has become traditional. Each enterprise of the city and private individuals give residents a real composition of fresh flowers, which pleases with bright colors all summer long. A riot of colors, aromas and a flight of fantasy reigns here. Walking through the park, you can see Snow White with a basket, a bright well, a multi-tiered cake made from fresh flowers, hearts of lovers or a fabulous house. It is almost impossible not to take a photo against the background of these compositions.

There is a cultural center in the city. It hosts performances by local creative teams and visiting stars, performances and circus performances.

In 1971, the ice palace "Crystal" was opened in the city. Almost immediately, a children's and youth hockey team was organized, which gained sports fame. This is the home sports arena for the Elektrostal hockey team. Matches of different levels are held on the ice.

There are sections for children who go in for hockey or figure skating. Citizens come here with their families to cheer for their favorite team or go ice skating.

Elektrostal is a city with a heroic past. During the war years, more than 12 thousand citizens came to the recruiting station and went to the front to defend their homeland. Almost 4 thousand of them did not return from the battle. To these heroesdedicated to the memorial complex with the inextinguishable Eternal Flame, opened in 1968

But the electricians took part in the war in Afghanistan and Chechnya. By decision of the city authorities, their memory is also immortalized in the memorial complex.

It has become a good tradition for newlyweds to lay flowers at this monument.

attractions of the city of Elektrostal

In 1999, a museum and exhibition complex was opened in the city, where, in addition to the exhibition hall, there are numerous circles for children, classes for young people, and a creative workshop. Various festivals, exhibitions, city holidays and other events are held within the walls and on the territory of the complex, which attract many spectators.

Elektrostal attractions

Listing the sights of Elektrostal, it is impossible not to mention the temples. There are several of them in the city: the church of St. John of Kronstadt, St. Andrew's Church, the hospital church of St. Panteleimon. Another new church is being built. In appearance, the temples look ancient, monumental, in the Novgorod style. But they were all built at the end of the 20th century.

Let there be no ancient artifacts among the sights of Elektrostal. But on the other hand, all of them are connected with the history of the city, with everyday work and military exploits of ordinary residents.
