‘Now scream!’ … Robbie Williams performing at the O2, London, 9 October 2022.

Robbie Williams review – a survivor and national treasure is triumphant

O2 Arena, London He might be on the in-roads to 50 and a family man but a glitter-draped Robbie Williams is discovering that he can have it all

B y the way Robbie Williams opens his show at London’s O2 Arena, you would think he has something to prove. A national treasure and one of the best-selling artists of all time, Williams has been reflecting British culture back at itself in a hurricane of hair gel and bravado since joining Take That in 1990. Equally, he’s had a life of stark ups and downs – adoration and derision, addiction and recovery – that has made him something of an underdog. Tonight, you hear him before you see him. That familiar, eternally boyish voice checking the mic – “two, one two” – giving the occasion a fly-by-the-seat of one’s pants vibe. Next, you see his silhouette. He emerges behind the band frozen in an Elvis pose; crouched over, mic in hand, flared trousers and all. They start Let Me Entertain You and Robbie struts to centre stage, revealing a gold glitter waistcoat, a greying French crop mullet and box-fresh white trainers. “Now SCREAM!” he demands. And they do.

Williams is a performer who, much like Liam Gallagher or Alex Turner , is able to tap into a kind of British masculinity that is loud of mouth and soft of eye: ballads for lads who are constantly one gulp of Carling away from bursting into tears over an afternoon with their grandad 24 years ago. As he bowls around the stage singing lyrics like “my bed’s full of takeaways, of fantasies of easy lays” and “I don’t wanna die, but I ain’t keen on living either” to an all-ages audience, you get the sense of these songs being timeless because they were written from a precipice. Whether he’s proclaiming “I’m a star but I’ll fade” or lamenting that “youth is wasted on the young”, the threat of loss hangs over every high.

‘Happy ending’ … Robbie Williams.

The tour is in support of Williams’s latest album, XXV, which sees 25 years of hits and fan favourites re-recorded and orchestrated with the Metropole Orkest . From Take That’s The Flood to Rock DJ to Kylie Minogue duet Kids , it’s essentially a personalised tour of his career, from boyband heartthrob through the cocaine years to his current station as a family man whose kids think he’s lost his looks. The set is peppered with anecdotes about going on holiday with Geri Horner when he was first getting sober, and doing cocaine with Oasis at Glastonbury before hammering out a cover of Don’t Look Back in Anger so resonant it should legitimately annoy the Gallagher brothers into burying the hatchet.

Given the framework of the tour, it’s no surprise that it feels almost like a swan song. He talks about 1990 – the year Thatcher resigned, the Berlin wall fell (November 1989 to be exact), and, more importantly, Take That formed. He does live commentary on the video for Everything Changes : explaining why there is jelly bouncing off his bare body and how Gary Barlow got all the lead parts. He reminisces about reading NME in the 90s and getting “big ideas” about writing his own songs. He makes dedications to his family and says he has found happiness. At one point a camera sweeps past the barrier and lingers on an older male fan holding a handmade sign that says “hardcore since ’74” (the year Robbie was born).

To counter, there’s plenty of the man that gave us Rudebox (which he graciously does not play). He points into the crowd and grabs his crotch and he bends over and roars “this is my bum, this is my arse” followed by something about ageing. Within the first five minutes he’s down among the crowd screaming “come on you fuckers”. For a sweeping encore of No Regrets and She’s the One , he dons a customised wrestling robe and holds his arms outstretched while the orchestra blows the songs up to operatic proportions.

Like his father Peter, the Sinatra of working men’s clubs, Williams is a showman from start to finish. While waxing lyrical about entertainment, he tells us that the number one rule is “love your audience”, and that love clearly goes both ways. Before finally bringing things to a close with Angels , he nods to Knebworth 2003: “When I asked you to grow old with me at Knebworth you did, didn’t you?”

Now approaching 50, Williams doesn’t just write songs about living fast and being young. He performs with the joy of what can come after. His parting message for anyone who’s followed his journey from the start – and, I suspect, himself: “Turns out there is a happy ending.”

Robbie celebrated his latest milestone with the release of ‘XXV’, featuring re-recorded orchestral versions of his biggest hits and personal favourite tracks.

The track debuted at No. 1, giving the hitmaker a record 14th solo chart-topper , which saw Robbie surpasses Elvis Presley as the solo artist with the most UK No. 1 albums.

“Thank you to everyone who’s supported the album: everyone who’s bought it, streamed it, downloaded it and reviewed it,” he said in celebration of the milestone.

“I’m so pleased that it’s gone to No. 1, and whilst it feels strange to be receiving an award during these sombre times, I wanted to thank you all for your support and dedicate this to the fans, who I never take for granted. I really appreciate it, thank you so much.”

In a  review of the album , Retro Pop said ‘XXV’ “marries Robbie’s classic sound with nuances found in his swing repertoire, celebrating the past 25 years and opening the door to the next era in his career.”

Robbie Williams XXV Tour Review

As a theatre blog, it is very rare that other artworks get cupboard space in this pantry of the dramatic arts, but occasionally a performance we attend strikes a chord and we feel it deserves an honorary mention; this is that blog post. On Saturday the 15th of October 2022, I went to see former Take That bench warmer Robbie Williams perform his XXV tour at the Birmingham Resort World Arena, formerly the NEC. Before you assume my outward love of the ageing pop star and dub him my ‘guilty pleasure’, I would note the tickets were bought for my mother who fits perfectly in his target audience of ‘middle aged women’. I will now defend my experience by saying there was no guilt in the pleasure of this show!

The performance is part of a small UK tour in collaboration with his latest album XXV, which boasts alternative mixes of his best known hits, without selling out and releasing a ‘greatest hits’ compilation. Let us first deal with the support at ‘ Lufthaus’, an EDM band consisting of Tim Metcalfe, Flynn Francis and mr Robbie Williams himself; yes, Robbie William’s support act was Robbie Williams. With the size of that mans ego, would you expect any less? Though Mr Williams did not make a stage appearance during their set, Tin and Flynn tried their best to hype up the crowd by playing repetitive songs bereft of melody to a bemused audience, at the lowest point of their set a QR code appeared on the screen for the audience to download their very own Lufthaus NFT, so very very odd.

The show opened with a bit of a curveball, the song ‘Hey Wow Yeah Yeah’ from the ‘Take The Crown’ album, best known for its appearance on the Vauxhall Corsa advert recently. The moving 3D screens lifted to reveal a very simple pyramid style set, with the band adorned - the blocks used were video screens which were used to their very limits in creative stage design, a lot is to be said to the tech team on this tour who knocked it out of the park with crisp audio and an incredible light show. The song lead into the classic ‘Let Me Entertain you’, which it did from the off set, the room erupted in a sea of women in their early 50’s screaming, jumping clapping and stomping along to the classic.

“I’m Robbie Williams, this is my show, this is my arse, let me entertain you”

After the ball grabbing starter of cheesy pop, the real show began. The showman had the audience in the palm of his hand, starting with jokes about being ‘F***ked’ after performing 2 songs, call backs to his televised Nebworth show where he asked the audience to “grow old with him”, and explained the concept of the album and show. Aside from fulfilling the terms of his contract with his record label, the tour was a trip down memory lane for the last 32 years of his career, from humble beginnings of Take That and getting his bum out in their first music video, to his self destruction, going solo and leading to his sobriety.

Rather touchingly Robbie confided in his audience that he has become aware his songs fit into two categories ‘Look at me aren’t I great’ and ‘bloody hell, I’m vulnerable’, and this is down to his mental health. Most touching was his confession that 22 years ago when he had hit rock bottom, became a recluse and struggled to make friends, he found a friend in one Gerry Halliwell of the Spice Girls and wrote the song Eternity to and about her, as he sang the audience really listened to the lyrics and melody and I think this opened eyes around the arena to what a fantastic songwriter he is - Let’s not forget that last year saw the debut of Robbie’s first Musical ‘The Boy in a Dress’ adapted from the David Walliams book.

xxv tour

The history lesson of the life of the legend himself gave insight into how he found his voice, from leaving Take That and releasing a cover of George Michaels ‘Freedom’, in the same cheesy style expected of a Boyband. A trip to Glastonbury and time spent with Oasis inspired him to have much more guitar and drum lead tracks, and the inspiration payed off. Robbie then treated the audience to a cover of ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ by Oasis, which surprisingly worked!

Coming closer to the present day he payed homage to his wife and 4 children, explained for the first time ever he is happy to be alive, happy to be loved and sang it all in ‘Love My Life’, one of his most recent hits. The show finished with ‘Rock DJ’, to leave the audience on a high, asking, ney, begging for more! The encore, three of his biggest selling songs ‘No Regrets’, ‘She’s the One’ and of course ‘Angels’. From start to finish the man controlled his audience, lightning whit, incomparable stage presence and a spellbinding performance.

In conclusion, like him or not, the man knows how to write a song (with 14 UK number one singles, 14 number one albums and 6 albums in the top 100 biggest selling albums), the man knows how to perform live (Guiness world record for selling 1.6 million tickets in one day in 2006) and the man knows how to have longevity in the business (with 32 years of success and has more Brit awards than any other artist with 18 awards and 39 nominations).

The concert concluded with Robbie proclaiming to the audience that there is still ‘loads more’ to come. The album XXV is on sale now, the XXV tour continues in the UK before moving to Europe next year. Celebrating 25 years since the beginning of his solo career a deluxe edition re-release of his debut album ‘Life Through A Lens’ is available for pre-order.

Friday night’s gig at New Century Hall was one of those where you’re so stunned by the show that you’re left wishing the act in front of you was Manc so you could claim them as you’re own – but sadly Novo Amor is a Welshman and we had to give him back.

The stage name for the highly impressive multi-instrumentalist and producer, Ali John Meredith-Lacey, in truth seeing him for the first time here in Manchester proved that the Novo Amor really is the sum of many talented parts.

Much like Bon Iver in that sense and in style, sound and approach to making music, for without Justin Vernon and co. there would be no Novo, one of our first worries was that he would be unable to carry over the level of production and sound design heard on the albums to the stage performance.

That’s where his full band came in, who ensured not only that the whole thing sounded virtually studio-perfect but took a step beyond what we ever thought we’d get to hear at a Novo Amor gig. And it all started with Ed Tullet performing under his own stage name Lowswimer for the opening act.

Lowswimmer

Anyone who listens to Novo will likely be aware of the little sub-group of artists that all swim in the same circle, from Ali himself to the likes Gia Margaret, Sean Carey (part of Bon Iver) and Yvette Young, to Hailaker – Tullet being one-half opposite Jemima Coulter – as well as Lowswimmer and several others.

He might have only played a handful of songs with only a guitar, including a couple of beautiful Hailaker tracks, but it was more than enough to leave an impression of the very sincere artist who clearly has a massive influence on all of those around him.

Explaining that this would be his second to last show perform with Novo Amor due to health issues and the general toll of touring, having helped write, record, produce and play the bulk of music ever put out under that name since day dot, it was a fittingly sombre and intimate warm-up.

However, even in delivering the more stripped-back set we were already half expecting from the headliner, we almost managed to get both sides of this little mini-music community: the quieter acoustic stuff where big vocals moments are left to shine, and they did, as well as the real deal.

Novo Amor live at New Century

When Ali and the rest of his band finally walked out on stage, with Ed himself receding back into what looked to be the more comfortable position just outside of the spotlight, it suddenly dawned on us that it wouldn’t just be a few folky guitars and some nice piano playing.

After the Lowswimmer’s ironically low-lit stage had somehow managed to hide a quietly better-budget backdrop, the stage suddenly began to light up as Novo Amor wandered on to pick up their instruments and play and from here on out we were just as captivated by the lights and effects as we were the music.

Be it thin but sharp white lines tracing the borders of light boxes like a weird game of snake; solid blocks of electric blues, warm yellows and moody reds appearing on perfectly-timed musical cues or dots delicately twinkling into a slow-moving constellation, each song felt like an experience.

Not sure we’ll ever get over seeing this track being introduced in such a stunning way and in a venue as eye-catching as New Century :

Similar to Ed when he was busy tuning his guitar, Ali let on that his talent lies in bringing these intricately built-up tracks to life not only in record form but in translating them for the live shows too, choosing to ask ChatGPT for some ‘on-stage banter in the style of Novo Amor’ to fill the gaps.

Truthfully, as much as both parties said they were ‘not good at this kind of stuff’, he did a good job at handling the short lulls between songs by letting people ask questions, daft or not, as well as making sure water got to those feeling faint in the hot room. Everyone was fine, don’t worry.

In fact, when one girl seemingly passed out nearer to the front of the crowd as he came towards the end of fan favourite Halloween (you have no idea how gorgeous that song sounds with a full room of people singing it back, by the way), he still managed to check on her whilst quietly playing the outro. A total pro.

Those were the three key letters here in every sense the more we think about it; be it the effortless professionalism in recreating what you hear in your headphones down to the tee and then some live, or the production levels and simple but striking set design behind them, it was verging on surreal.

  • Manc institutions Matt and Phred’s and Jimmy’s to join forces for new live gig series

Another wave of acts has been added to the Green Island Festival 2024 lineup this summer

  • The timeline of Night & Day Cafe’s noise row – including a surprise offer from Matty Healy

We might not have been anticipating such a put-together set and overall level of production both in terms of sound and the often mesmerising visuals but we don’t know why, because we absolutely should’ve.

This is what you get when you put a group of extremely talented musicians and multi-instrumentalists together in one place. They might make highly complex, heavily layered and often delicate sounds with electronics and technology playing a big role, but they also know how to ramp it up for an audience.

All we can pray is that the next time Novo is back in Manchester he brings at least one half of Hailaker along again and maybe a surprise showing from another corner of this collective.

A special shout-out has to go to Ed as well; we have no shame in admitting that watching Ali looking on at his long-term creative partner and mate with a smile as he signed off his time with the live band by belting out the final tune had us welling up.

Matt and Phred's x Jimmy's takeover Manchester

Two much-loved institutions in this city’s legendary music scene and Manchester’s nightlife culture as a whole are set to collide next month for a brand new live event series, throwing a big old party and supporting the industry in the process – who’s ready for Matt and Phred’s x Jimmy’s?

That’s right, two of the very best venues not only for live music but for booze and a bite to eat have recently announced a new collaboration which will see both Manchester city centre spots doing their bit to support local independent business as well as up-and-coming artists.

With the inaugural event in the new series set to take place at the popular jazz bar, gig venue and pizza spot Matt and Phred’s , the team over at Jimmy’s will be lending a hand to put on a great night of live music this May.

As two of the veritable tastemakers when it comes to the top tunes coming out of 0161, we can’t think of many better places to champion the Manchester music and hospitality crossover than these two.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jimmy's (@jimmys)

Scheduled for 10 May, the Jimmy’s crew are set to work alongside Matt and Phred’s to deliver a mint night of music and Manc nightlife at its finest.

There’s always been a bit of debate as to when the former first opened (most have settled on 1998), but they pride themselves on being “the only true dedicated jazz venue in the North West”, with live performances pretty much every night for the week.

As for Jimmy’s, while they might have had to say goodbye to their original site on the edge of the Northern Quarter and their Liverpool location late last year too, they’ve done a good job of attracting new crowds at their current home on Cutting Room Square in Ancoats .

Hosting rising stars Denver County Council , who recently joined adopted Mancs The Blinders on their UK tour along with Wigan indie four-piece, The Stanleys, we can only hope this will be just the first in a long line of collabs between various local acts and venues.

Not only are Denver County Council being tipped for big things, having recently got some airplay on the likes of XS Manchester, but the entire ethos of this new live series is something we can all get behind.

It might start with Jimmy’s x Matt and Phred’s, but backing nightlife and other independent businesses through spotlighting new artists has always been part of the very fabric of this city and the region as a whole, so we’re sure it won’t be long before more names get involved on both sides of the stage.

See you there.

Robbie Williams: “Acid house was a big phenomenon, I was part of that culture”

We caught up with newly formed electronic trio Lufthaus in the midst of their European tour to talk Berlin, Partying at Pikes and the 'melody of being a human being'

  • Words: Megan Townsend | Photos: Courtesy of Armada Music
  • 24 February 2023

Having made a number of anonymous appearances in Ibiza last summer , it wasn't until October 2022 that newly-formed electronic outfit Lufthaus revealed the three masterminds behind the project: Australian songwriting/production team Tim Metcalfe and Flynn Francis and their regular collaborator, 18-time BRIT Award winner Robbie Williams , on vocals.

Despite nearly a decade working together, starting with Metcalfe and Francis' work on Williams' 2012 album ' Take the Crown ', Lufthaus as a trio only came about during lockdown. Inspired by a shared love of Berlin electronica , with its melodic, somber synths and frenetic basslines, the "Lufthaus sound" is a spiritual, atmospheric take on the trio's multitude of influences. It's music “for those who know there’s more worth knowing,” according to Williams, who teased the Lufthaus project in 2020 — declaring intentions to "start a band and be a DJ and want to rent a space in Berlin, a gallery with my art, and in the evening it will be a club — a bit like Berghain .”

The three have so far unveiled four releases on paradigmatic NYC/London electronic label Armada Music, ' Sway ', ' To The Light ' and ' Soul Seekers ' in 2022, and most recently ' Unloveable ' — with the latter released alongside a music video consisting of footage from the Robbie XXV tour , on which Lufthaus are acting as support.

We sat down with Lufthaus amidst their 26-stop European tour to talk old skool rave inspirations, studio magic and nights out at Pikes .

xxv tour

How does it feel to be on a world tour?

Tim: It’s been great so far. We love food, so we’ve enjoyed being able to scope out the best places in each city to eat. Italy has been a big highlight so far.

Flynn: I feel privileged to be doing this in arenas this size. We got to play to over 100,000 people in Munich . Did three shows in Ibiza. It's amazing to be able to go onstage and play to 15,000 people a night supporting Rob. Excited to go to a few places I've never been like Lithuania and Latvia, and obviously looking forward to the two nights in Berlin. Including the UK and the EU, it's 50-odd arena dates. I feel like we are living the dream right now.

Can you tell us a bit about making music together? What is your process in the studio?

Robbie: The boys send me a track and then I usually listen to the music and see where it takes me melodically and lyrically. I want these lyrics to be different from what I usually do, I guess they’re more spiritual and from the heart.

Tim: Lufthaus was essentially born during the first COVID lockdowns, so we did a lot of writing via zoom calls and facetimes. We’ve been working with Robbie for over 10 years now, so we have our system down pretty well. By the time we met up face-to-face (after the restrictions ended) most of the heavy lifting had already been done.

Flynn: We will make a piece of music, sometimes come up with top line ideas and send them over to rob. Rob has come up with some amazing melodies and lyrics over these songs. People really like this side of Rob’s writing, and his voice sounds incredible across all the tracks.

How would you describe the Lufthaus sound? What do you want listeners to take away from your music?

Tim: We like electronic music, but we also like songs. So we’ve tried to create something that allows a bit of both. Try to land somewhere in the middle. Atmospheric, melodic electronica with a fun side. A lot of our unreleased music will reveal the other sides of lufthaus in the coming months.

What about you Robbie, what have been your inspirations in the sound from Lufthaus? Any dance music/electronic artists that you're really into?

Robbie: ' 90s dance music is a big influence for me, I always go back to when I first fell in love with 808 State , A Guy Called Gerald , Lil Louis —acts like that. But I also loved electro hip hop from the early '80s too.

xxv tour

You've got decades of experience in music, but this project is a deviation for you into electronic. Have you gravitated towards it for a while? Is it something you've always loved?

Robbie: It’s always been part of my life in one way or another. In 1990 acid house was a big phenomenon and I was part of that culture with my friends. We pretty much left school and partied our arses off.

You recently appeared at Pikes in Ibiza, can you tell us about that?

Robbie: It was an interesting few nights, I always thought with this project that it would be me and my friends around a DJ booth and a few people dancing like it used to be. But if you throw me into the mix, everybody thinks I’m going to do something. I just want to be part of the crowd, yet on stage. I may have to re-assess that at some point, I don’t want to have to entertain when DJ-ing with Lufthaus, I want a night out!

Have you got any great club anecdotes from over the years you'd like to share with the Mixmag readers?

Robbie: Nothing that wouldn't make a front page headline for a red top tabloid, so I best give this question a miss.

Can you tell us some of your biggest influences? How did you all come to music?

Tim: There are so many good producers out there doing great things. I’m loving Partiboi69 at the moment. GHEIST and Pan-Pot are two other favorites of mine. I also love The 1975 but I’m not really sure how that ties into this.

Flynn: Massive Attack , Jamie XX , Chemical Brothers , Ben Klock , Norman Nodge , Amelie lens . Fred again.. is also doing some genre-bending stuff that I love right now.

What is it about the "Berlin sound" that you have affinity with?

Tim: Berlin is the home of techno. I always find it so inspiring to go out to the clubs and hear all the new music being played. I spend a lot of time at Riverside Studios in Berlin whenever I’m there which is a great place to make music and be surrounded by great people. Flynn lives in Berlin too, so it has become a bit of a Lufthaus base of late.

Flynn: Having lived there for a number of years it's impossible not to be influenced by the city. Electronica is so interwoven to the fabric of Berlin, it's a way of life. It has so many iconic venues and clubs, so many prominent DJ’s call it home. Every type of music you can imagine, Berlin has a home for it. Out of all the cities I've been to, it truly is the city that never sleeps.

What can listeners expect from upcoming Lufthaus releases.

Tim: We’re going to keep evolving the sound and see where we end up. Lots of different sounds, lots of fun. Some potentially exciting collaborations.

How would you say the Lufthaus differs from the "Robbie Williams sound?"

Robbie: It’s without the nod and the wink that you might have heard in a Robbie Williams track. It’s more spiritual, about the melody of being a human being

Read this next: Robbie Williams plans to open a club "a bit like Berghain" in Berlin

What else is coming up for you?

Tim: Hopefully bigger and better shows and our debut album.

Flynn: More singles, clubs shows across Europe for summer. An album at the end of the year.

When is Robbie Williams' album 'XXV' released?

Robbie's album 'XXV' was released on 9th September and features some of the singer's biggest hits re-recorded, with Metropole Orkest.

The 'Rock DJ' singer shared news of his brand new album on Instagram saying: 'My new album XXV is out on September 9th. The album consists of re-recorded and newly orchestrated versions of my greatest hits recorded with the Metropole Orchestra, alongside a few surprises. I can’t wait to share it with you. RW x'.

What songs are on Robbie Williams' album 'XXV'?

Before it was released, Robbie confirmed all of the songs on his new album as well as releasing 'Angels', and a new video on YouTube. The black and white video shows a full orchestra accompanying Robbie as he sings his 1997 Top 5 single.

Now take a look at Robbie Williams through the years:

1989: career beginnings with take that.

Starting with a line-up of five young men, Take That consisted of Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, Mark Owen, Jason Orange and Robbie Williams, with the original (short lived) name of Kick It.

1991: Early days in the band

Take That's original line-up of Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, Mark Owen, Jason Orange and Robbie Williams. Thankfully they changed their name and after a few unsuccessful songs in the early 90s Take That's breakthrough hit 'It Only Takes A Minute' was released. The song was a cover of a 1975 song by Taveres and reached Number 7 in the charts.

1992: Take That in their prime

In 1992 Take That had hits with 'A Million Love Songs' and 'Could It Be Magic'. The boys' follow-up single 'Could It Be Magic' quickly propelled them to super-stardom with a string of number 1s not far away. Take That's success continued in 1993 with 'Pray', 'Relight My Fire' (featuring Lulu) and 'Babe'.

1994: BRITs performance

The band's success continued in 1994 with 'Everything Changes' and 'Sure'. Here they are performing at The BRITs 1994.

1995: Robbie left Take That

However, in July 1995 after countless hits, fans heard the devastating news; Robbie Williams would be leaving the band following friction with other band members. Robbie later admitted in a TV documentary in 2005, that he did some "stupid stuff" after parting ways with the band over 20 years ago, but said he didn't regret it because he was young. In 1997, Robbie released his first album 'Life Thru a Lens'. The album included the single, 'Angels' which is still his best-selling single of all time.

2000: 'Rock DJ' and BRIT Award win

At the start of the millennium Robbie released his third solo album, 'Sing When You're Winning'. The album included the single 'Rock DJ' which had quite a controversial music video. The video involved Robbie trying to impress a group of women by stripping down but, when the clothes didn't work he starts removing his skin and muscle until he's just a dancing skeleton. Many TV networks edited the video because of this. However, the single was still a great success with it being the UK's fourth-best selling single of 2000. The song also went on to win best British single and best music video of the year at the BRIT Awards as well as best special effects at the VMAs.

2001: Swing album

Having grown up loving the music of Frank Sinatra, Robbie went in a new musical direction in 2001 when he released the album 'Swing When You're Winning'. With the title being a pun on his previous album, Robbie called 'Swing While You're Winning' "the big band album he had always dreamed of making". The album includes guest performances from Rupert Everett, Nicole Kidman, Jon Lovitz and Jane Horrocks as well as Frank Sinatra posthumously duetting with Robbie. Despite not being his usual style, the album was still a success and made it to Number 1 on the UK albums chart.

2002: EMI deal

In 2002 Robbie signed a whopping £80 million deal with EMI which was the biggest music deal for a British artist. The record was only broken in 2016 by Adele. The deal included a promise from EMI that they'd help him break into the United States. While his next album, 'Escapology', did perform better internationally than his previous albums, it still didn't perform as well as he'd hoped in the US.

2005: Move to LA

From the mid noughties Robbie Williams started calling Los Angeles home, early on he started his own football club called Los Angeles Vale F.C. The club played in the LA premiere league in Santa Monica. The team is named after his hometown club, Stoke-on-Trent's Port Vale F.C.

2006: The 'Close Encounters' Tour

In 2006, Robbie embarked on his 'Close Encounters' Tour where he performed over 50 shows across the globe. The tour got him into the Guinness Book of World Records after he sold a whopping 1.6 million tickets in a single day!

2009: 'Reality Killed The Video Star'

In 2009 Robbie was back with his eighth studio album, 'Reality Killed the Video Star'. The album included the singles 'Bodies', 'You Know Me' and 'Morning Sun'. While the album still managed to sell over a million copies in Europe, it wasn't enough to land the top spot on the UK album charts, coming second place to JLS' debut album.

2010: Take That reunion

Robbie Williams made an unexpected return to the Take That in 2010, joining forces with Gary Barlow - the first time since 1995 - with the song 'Eight Letters' appearing on later albums by both Take That and Robbie - 'Progress' and 'Take the Crown'. Then, later that year, the news that all Take That fans had been waiting for was confirmed, the original line-up would be reforming for the wildly successful album, 'Progress' and its live tour. Their lead single 'The Flood' was released and peaked at Number 2 featuring both Gary and Robbie as lead vocals.

2012: Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee

In 2012 Robbie took part in the celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee, celebrating her 60 years on the throne. Robbie was the opening act of a concert held in the gardens of Buckingham Palace to commemorate the anniversary.

2013: 'Swings Both Ways'

Robbie returned to the world of swing with his second album in the genre, 'Swings Both Ways'. The album included some original songs written by Robbie, Guy Chambers, and Chris Heath, as well as some covers of some classics including The Jungle Book's 'I Wan'na Be Like You' and The Wizard of Oz's 'If I Only Had a Brain'. The album includes duets with Olly Murs, Michel Bublé, and Kelly Clarkson.

2018: FIFA opening ceremony performance

In the summer of 2018, Robbie performed at the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup that took place in Moscow, Russia. During the performance he sang some of his greatest hits that included 'Let Me Entertain You', and 'Angels'.

2018: The X Factor judging panel

Later on in 2018, it was announced that Robbie would be joining the judging panel of the 15th series of the X Factor on ITV. Robbie was one of three new judges on the panel joining Simon Cowell, the other two were his wife, Ayda Field, and former One Direction member Louis Tomlinson.

2019: The Boy In The Dress

In 2019 Robbie co-wrote the music for the musical adaption of David Walliams' The Boy in the Dress along with Guy Chambers. The musical was produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company and premiered in Stratford-Upon-Avon in late 2019. The show was due to transfer to the Savoy Theatre in London's West End in Autumn 2020, but the Coronavirus pandemic has put those plans on halt.

2019: 'The Christmas Present'

Robbie released his first ever Christmas album in November 2019 called 'The Christmas Present'. The album had some original songs along with some festive classics such as 'Winter Wonderland' and 'The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)'. The album features guest performers including Helene Fischer, Rod Stewart, and Tyson Fury. The album made it to Number 1 in the UK charts during its second week and knocked Robbie up to joint-second place with Elvis Presley for number of number one albums in the UK.

2020: Lockdown Take That reunion

Robbie reunited with Take That for a very special performance in May 2020 during the lockdown amid the global pandemic of Coronavirus, performing a 40-minute set.

2021: Robbie Williams' biopic Better Man stars production

A film about Robbie Williams called Better Man, after this 2001 singer was announced in 2021. Better Man will be directed my Michael Gracey, who also directed The Greatest Showman. Michael will also be writing the film alongside screenwriters Oliver Cole and Simon Gleeson.

2022: Robbie Williams announces 'XXV' album and tour

I've been a long-time fan of cats, I've had many feline friends over the years and after studying their fascinating behaviour, I can confidently say, It's Great To Be a Cat."

Aerosmith reschedules Columbus concert after farewell tour delays

C OLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) — One of the legendary American rock bands will finally be coming back to Columbus after multiple delays for its farewell tour.

Aerosmith announced it has a new date for its concert in central Ohio with special guests The Black Crowes for its “Peace Out” farewell tour. The show will be at the Schottenstein Center on Jan. 13, 2025.

The original concert date was Jan. 23, 2024 but a September concert where lead vocalist Steven Tyler suffered vocal cord damage forced numerous shows to be postponed.

This is the first time since 2012 Aerosmith will perform in Columbus. Tickets for the concert go on sale on Friday, April 12 at 10 a.m. Anyone who purchased tickets for the previously scheduled show will have those tickets honored. Those with previous tickets will receive more information at a later date.

Aerosmith will have two other Ohio shows prior to its stop in Columbus when the band goes to Cleveland on Sept. 29 followed by a Cincinnati concert on Oct. 17.

Formed in 1970, the Boston-based rock group is the best selling American rock band of all time with four Grammy Awards and a 2001 induction in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The band is also part of a select group of performers to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show when they headlined the Super Bowl XXV halftime show in 2001 with NSYNC, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige, and Nelly.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
