  • sandeepkinge 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing and professional people I had an amazing first-time snorkelling experience in New Zealand. I am grateful to have had professional, experienced, and knowledgeable trainers and support staff to organize this event. They provided sufficient information before, during, and after the session and made me feel comfortable and enjoy my tour. I would definitely consider going for an advanced guided snorkelling experience. Read more Written March 25, 2024

  • amypH7054CK 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Exceptional! Sara is the best! Tried scuba for the first time today and it was fantastic! All thanks to our guide, Sara. She was exceptional. Her personality was just as vibrant as our experience! Highly recommend. She made us feel so comfortable being novice divers, I would highly consider getting certified now! Everything ran so smoothly. We also saw amazing sea life! A truly memorable day! Read more Written January 31, 2024
  • Seaside303889 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent! We did a try dive with Sara and couldn’t be happier with our experience. She is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable for first time divers. In the water throughout the dive she was calm and reassuring. We saw plenty of snapper and goat fish, a couple eagle rays, and even a puffer fish! Would absolutely book again, we had an incredible time! Read more Written January 31, 2024
  • 18fergush 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing place and amazing company! I did the advanced snorkelling at the start of my trip (17/12/23) with Adi, the try scuba dive at the end (10/1/24) with Sara. Both were amazing and we saw so many Sapper, Red Moki, Kelpfish, Drummmer, Urchins, Spotties, an Eagle Ray, Sponges and lots of other cool things! Both instructors were absolutely brilliant, making sure you were okay all the time and making sure you dived in a relaxed environment. With the Try Dive you spend about 1 hour in the water, with the rest of the time spent going through all the paperwork, equipment and safety procedures. I wish it had gone on longer, however, it was still a magical experience and one of the highlights of my trip! Thank you to Adi and Sara for all your help and encouragement… and I hope to return one day with my open water :) Read more Written January 22, 2024
  • Zoe H 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Beautiful location but average expereince Tour was schedule for 2pm but the instructors didn't start the briefing until 2:30pm as we were still waiting for several latecomers. Which is not a big deal except the instructors didn't communicate why we were all waiting around under the hot sun and when we would expect to start, so it felt like our tour time was being wasted away. The instructors were also a little unprofessional in talking about how they would need to 'drag out' the length of the briefing in order to wait for the latecomers, again it felt like our time was being wasted. The (beginner) tour itself was okay, I was expecting it to be slightly more 'guided' e.g. taking us to specific places to see particular fish or pointing out interesting things but we more or less just followed them around and left to look at things on our own — could have just hired the gear and done it ourselves. This was our first time snorkelling which is why we booked a tour but it feels unnecessary in hindsight. Read more Written January 10, 2024
  • Gate15 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Well run dive shop in Goat Island Marine Reserve Really well run dive outfit with all gear in excellent condition. My only advice would be to keep an eye on the weather conditions. Due to the adverse weather we had to dive from Mathesons Bay which was pretty disappointing as a dive site. Dives here are shallow but long (max depth c 5-6m with a 50m plus dive time) so a good place for beginners Read more Written January 7, 2024
  • Hippoglossus71 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The only choice when visiting Goat Island New Zeeland! We came to snorkel at Goat Island and chose this outlet to rent our gear, Wow did we chose the rigth place! The shop is very well ran with high quality gears that are properly cleaned after each hire. Super friendly staff. We accidentally left our GoPro in the bucket when returning the snorkel gears. As we were already on our way south, Sara helped to post it to Christchurch so we can pick it up when we return our campervan. Big thanks for over-the'top service! Read more Written January 7, 2024

  • asishtk2024 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Alternate Bay (Matheson Bay) for Snorkelling is not good The equipment provided was top-notch, and the briefing before the snorkeling session was thorough, covering safety protocols and highlighting the various species we might encounter. The attention to detail was impressive. However, due to bad weather we didn't get a chance to do snorkel in Goat Island and end up in alternate bay (Matheson Bay). I strongly recommend please don't do Matheson bay and it is good to reschedule to another day if Goat Island weather is bad. Not enough fish and the water is not clear in Matheson Bay. Overall, I highly recommend Goat Island Dive & Snorkel for an exceptional snorkeling adventure. Whether you're a seasoned snorkeler or a first-timer, they provide an unforgettable journey into the underwater world. I'll definitely be returning for another dive into the beauty of the ocean with them! Read more Written January 1, 2024

Poor Knights Islands – Marine Reserve, Diving and Ocean Adventures

Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve Tutukaka Coast New Zealand

The Tutukaka Coast enjoys ranking as one of the top coastal destinations by both “National Geographic Traveller” and “Lonely Planet”. It stretches on a loop road that heads out from Whangarei on the Twin Coast Discovery Highway. From here the road winds its way through orchards, farmland and along rock walls. Numerous quaint spectacular and remote coastal villages and hamlets flank the highway. It is an iconic example of the almost picture-perfect beauty New Zealand has to offer, with scenery on land and sea that will take your breath away. Its highlight: The Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve, a diving paradise.

Poor Knights Islands, the ultimate snorkeling and diving destination

The Poor Knights Islands are the remains of ancient volcanoes. They are just 23 kilometres off the Tutukaka Coast. Intrepid explorer Jacques Cousteau named them as one of the top diving and snorkelling jewels in the world. An abundance of marine animals and breathtaking scenery, plus the world’s largest sea cave, make this a jaw-dropping experience you won’t want to miss. The marine and nature reserve stretches for 800 metres around the islands. Its purpose is to protect this 11 million-year-old natural reserve that is awaiting world heritage status. As you will discover, this makes the Poor Knights Islands a remote and private submarine wonderland. Cheeky Kiwi Travel offers this peerless underwater experience in our  Poor Knights small group tour and cruise  from Auckland.

At the Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve, you will be able to explore and enjoy an abundance of plant, animal and fish life both above and below water. To be sure, the incredibly varied spectrum of life forms is without equal. The caves, arches, tunnels and sheer cliffs provide a stunning variety of habitat. You will marvel as you explore the pristine beauty of this uniquely special spot while you snorkel, dive, kayak or boat through waters teeming with life. In short, discovering the marine biodiversity of Poor Knights is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It will leave an indelible imprint in your memory that you will cherish.

Savour seafood, fish and island cuisine

The Coast is well-known for its small, friendly pubs and out of the way restaurants. Surprisingly, several boast international recognition for their fresh fish and seafood dishes and unique culinary techniques. Fresh fish and honey smoked snapper are highlights of the local cuisine. Be sure to stop and sample these famous specialities fresh from the ocean and enjoy some genuine kiwi-hospitality.

How we choose the Best Auckland Activities (Ranking methodology)

Firstly, we’re Auckland locals who have spent years travelling around the world – we’ve even won awards for our travel writing. So we know what’s good here, and what’s good around the world. We ‘travel’ this city and take part in as many opportunities as possible. But we can’t do every experience.

We also use travel reviews from other people, and look for the best reliable reviews, fast-selling tours, and cross-reference online recommendations from several sources.

Finally, we get direct feedback from travellers, friends, industry folks, and readers who help us discover new options, remove options that are no longer as good as they were, and generally make Discover Auckland a better resource for you.

We may earn income if you book through links on our site, but we never recommend things that are poor value. It’s really important to us that you enjoy your trip, recommend us to friends, and come back to Discover Auckland to plan your next adventure.

50 people injured by 'strong movement' on Boeing plane flying from Australia to New Zealand

A t least 50 people were injured Monday after a LATAM Airlines Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner "dipped so dramatically into a nose dive for a couple of seconds" during a flight to New Zealand, causing passengers to slam into the roof of the cabin, witnesses say.

LATAM Airlines says the plane traveling from Sydney, Australia, experienced "a technical event during the flight which caused a strong movement." Paramedics and more than 10 emergency vehicles were waiting for passengers when flight LA800 landed in Auckland.

"The plane dipped so dramatically into a nose dive for a couple of seconds and around 30 people hit the ceiling hard," said Daniel, one passenger onboard the aircraft, according to the New Zealand Herald.

"None of us knew what had happened until after the flight, I was just trying to keep everyone calm," he added. "We never heard any announcement from the captain."

DOJ OPENS PROBE INTO ALASKA AIRLINES PLANE BLOWOUT: REPORT

The newspaper reports that the incident happened with about an hour left into the flight.

READ ON THE FOX NEWS APP

"I had just dozed off and I luckily had my seatbelt on, and all of a sudden the plane just dropped," passenger Brian Jokat also told broadcaster RNZ. "It wasn’t one of those things where you hit turbulence and you drop a few times ... we just dropped."

Jokat said one passenger two seats away from him wasn’t wearing his seatbelt when the drop happened.

"I thought I was dreaming. I opened my eyes and he was on the roof of the plane on his back, looking down on me. It was like The Exorcist," he said.

Jokat also told RNZ that the incident occurred in seconds.

"I felt the plane take a nosedive – it felt like it was at the top of a rollercoaster, and then it flattened out again," he reportedly added, noting that people onboard and the flight crew tended to the injured until the plane landed.

FAMILY OF INDIANA MOM WHO DIED ON AA PLANE REMAIN WITH UNANSWERED QUESTIONS

About 50 people were treated at the scene for mostly mild injuries while 13 of them were transported to a hospital, an ambulance spokesperson told the Associated Press. One patient who was on the flight was reportedly in serious condition.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner's final destination was Santiago, Chile, but was landing at Auckland Airport in accordance with its normal flight path, according to Reuters.

"LATAM regrets the inconvenience and injury this situation may have caused its passengers, and reiterates its commitment to safety as a priority within the framework of its operational standards," the airline said.

Jokat told RNZ the pilot of the plane came to the back of the cabin after landing in Auckland.

"I asked him ‘what happened?’ and he said to me, ‘I lost my instrumentation briefly and then it just came back all of a sudden,’" Jokat said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Anyone over the age of 8 years.

Under 14 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Perfect for those who don't know how to swim

This tour has been specially tailored for people who are new to swimming or being in the ocean. We use special safety equipment to keep you afloat that allows you to move naturally in the water. The hope with this tour is to get people confident in the water and fall in love with our ocean.

If you are confident in the water and have been swimming in the ocean before then the  Advanced Snorkel Tour would be the best option for you.

On your Guided Tour

You will meet at Goat Island Dive and Snorkel Center. Here, our friendly staff will get you kitted up with a mask, snorkel, fins and a wetsuit

You will then drive in your own vehicle 3km to the Goat Island Marine Reserve. Here you will meet with your Snorkel Instructor.

The experience starts with an introduction to using the equipment and some snorkel techniques and basic learning to swim. We share the history of Goat Island and introduce you to the marine life you are likely to meet at New Zealand's first marine reserve. Before jumping in you'll receive a full, thorough safety briefing.

We'll all make our way to the water, and finalize our equipment. We will stay shallow and get used to the equipment and the strange sensation of breathing while looking underwater! Once everyone is feeling confident and comfortable we will make our way out and continue our adventure.

After the tour, you will be able to use the equipment for the remainder of the day and carry on exploring!

Please allow 2.5 hours for your tour this will include getting your gear, briefings and time in the water.

What is snorkeling?

Snorkeling is when we use a mask and a small tube called a snorkel to see and breathe with our face in the water. This allows us to observe the underwater world and the wealth of life it hosts. Snorkeling is a fantastic way to begin to learn to swim in the ocean.

Goat Island Dive and Snorkel is a fully safety audited company with Adventure Mark certification.

Under the supervision of your instructor, you'll stay safe and looked after at all times.

If you have been snorkeling before you might like to try our advanced guided snorkel tour . This is perfect for those who want to learn more about snorkeling and freediving.

We advise people to book ahead, to avoid disappointment. If there is no availability please don't hesitate to call 094226925 , we may be able to squeeze you in.
