American Airlines Carry-On Rules: Everything You Need to Know

American Airlines Carry-On Policy: Everything You Need to Know!

If you want to avoid checking a bag or paying fees on American, you need to read this!

Carry-On Bag Size & Weight Restrictions

American airlines bag sizer, recommended carry-on bag when flying aa, american airlines personal item size, american airlines carry-on liquids, carry-on pet fees, tsa approved pet carriers, prohibited or restricted items, summary: american airlines carry-on policy, related articles:.

Before you board your next flight, make sure you are aware of your airline’s carry-on policies .  Each airline has a separate set of rules, so don’t just assume that what works for one will work for all airlines.

In this article, we’ll explain everything you need to know about American Airlines’ carry-on policy including carry-on size and weight limits, liquid policy, personal items, and other rules and restrictions you should know before boarding your flight.

American Airlines Carry-On Policy

American Airlines allows one personal item and one carry-on bag at no charge. The personal item must be small enough to be stored under the seat in front of you.

American Airlines Carry-On Size Limits

American Airlines requires your carry-on bag to be no more than 22″ x 14″ x 9″ (56 cm x 36cm x 23cm). Your personal item cannot exceed 18″ x 14″ x 8″ (45 cm x 35cm x 20cm) Both measurements include the handles and wheel of your carry on.

Soft-sided garment bags that measure up to 51 inches / 130 cm (length + width + height) can also be taken as your carry-on item.

Musical instruments are also considered a carry-on item and must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.

As a general rule, American Airlines does not impose weight restrictions on carry-on bags or personal items.

If you aren’t sure what size your carry-on is, American provides “Bag Sizers” located at both the ticketing counters and the departure gates. If your bag will fit into the sizer, then you are all set to bring it on board with you. If it does not fit, you will have to check the bag.

American airlines carry on bag sizer

When flying American, I recommend the Travelpro Maxlite 5 Expandable Spinner. I have used this carry-on for years. It’s durable, reasonably priced, and holds everything I need for 3-4 day trips.

Travelpro Maxlite 5 21" Carry-On Expandable Spinner

This carry-on bag has been sizer bin tested to accommodate overhead bin space on most major US airlines.

Case Dimensions:

  • H: 21 in. W: 14 in. D: 9 in.

Note: If fully expanded it may not meet overhead bin size limits, so be careful to not overpack.

Personal items include a purse , briefcase, laptop, backpack, blanket , shopping bag, or a similar-sized item.  Dimensions for a personal item should not exceed 18 x 14 x 8 inches (45 x 35 x 20 cm).

Diaper bags (1 per child), soft-sided cooler bags with breast milk, breast pumps, child safety seats, strollers, and medical or mobility devices don’t count as your personal item or carry-on.

The rules for carry-on liquids are set by the TSA (Transportation Security Administration), not by the airline.  American Airlines doesn’t have its own specific Liquids Policy, they just enforce the rules and policies of the TSA.

It’s also important to note that the rules for bringing a “liquid” in your carry-on bag are different from the rules that govern what you can bring in your checked luggage. Liquids in a carry-on bag must be 3.4 ounces or smaller and fit in a 1 quart-sized container. Anything larger must be placed in your checked luggage.

  • All liquids, gels, pastes, and aerosols must be in a container of 3.4 ounces or smaller.
  • All liquids must be in a resealable quart-sized clear plastic bag that is removed from your carry-on during the TSA screening process.
  • Special exceptions are in place for items such as medication, formula, breast milk, etc.
  • Food and Drinks purchased once you have cleared TSA checkpoints are not included in these restrictions.

TSA allows certain duty-free liquids through security in your carry-on bag if they’re packaged in a security tamper-evident bag. If you’re traveling with liquids or are unsure about any item, please contact the TSA .

American Airlines Carry-On Pet Policy

On American flights, you can bring 1 kennel as your carry-on bag if:

  • You pay the carry-on pet fee
  • Your pet stays in the kennel and under the seat in front of you the entire flight

You can travel with your pet carrier and one personal item, but you won’t be permitted to bring a carry-on bag in addition to a pet carrier and personal item. Instead, the kennel will replace your carry-on bag.

Here is a chart showing the pet fees American Airlines charges each way.   Double them for a round-trip flight.

Service animals have some separate guidelines.  Here is a link to AA’s service animal rules .

If you do plan on bringing your pet with you, make sure you follow TSA’s pet policy and have an approved Pet Carrier that conforms to American Airlines’ pet policy .

I have traveled with 2 dogs over the last 10 years, one was a 20 lb. Shih Tzu-Bichon (in the picture above) and another is a 12lb. Chihuahua mix. We used the Sherpa pet carrier when bringing them on a flight with us and it worked great!

Sherpa Deluxe Travel Bag Pet Carrier, Airline Approved

Features mesh panels so your pet can breathe easily, a non-slip shoulder strap, locking zippers, and a rear storage pocket for treats and other goodies.

Approved for use on most major airlines and the small and medium sizes are included in Sherpa's exclusive Guaranteed on Board program.

There are certain items that are considered dangerous and classified as hazardous materials. Dangerous goods are prohibited from both your carry-on and checked bag on all flights. These rules are not specific to any airline and are mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration.

A list of prohibited or restricted goods and materials can be found in the following resources:

  • IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations
  • TSA Permitted and Prohibited Items
  • FAA Packsafe List

In conclusion, make sure you review American Airlines’ carry-on rules before packing for a trip and heading to the airport. They have size restrictions for carry-on bags, so it’s important to check the dimensions and weight of your luggage before arriving at the airport. Or you might end up paying unwanted fees.

Dealing with luggage can be one of the most frustrating parts of traveling, especially when each airline has different rules and regulations when it comes to carry-on bags. Since domestic carry-on suitcases won’t meet the stricter limitations of 21.7 x 15.9 x 9 inches set by most international airlines, we sifted through all of our tested luggage to recommend the best carry-ons that fit these requirements.

Whether you’re backpacking through Asia or river-cruising through Europe, we selected backpacks, suitcases, and duffel bags that fit any adventure that requires an international flight. All of the bags we recommend below have been thoroughly tested in our New York City lab and during our real-world travels. We even built an airplane set featuring a real row of seats and an overhead bin to test the bags in as many ways as we could. We evaluated each based on design, capacity, durability, and maneuverability so you can feel confident in your luggage pick for upcoming trips abroad.

Best Overall

Away the carry-on.

It's lightweight, despite how much it holds, and is one of the easier bags to lift into overhead bins thanks to top and bottom handles.

The bag is not expandable.

This sleek bag is incredibly spacious, despite the fact that it doesn't expand. It easily fit everything included on our packing list as well as an additional pair of sneakers. The lid of the case acts as it's own storage compartment, keeping items separate from the bottom half for easy organization. The lid also has a mesh zippered pocket with plenty of give so you can pack it full without your items spilling out upon closing.

The overall size of the bag is not at all cumbersome and is so light, it's easy to lift into storage bins and navigate across a range of surfaces with ease. We also love that the handle does have two different heights and did not get stuck (even after we hit it with a baseball bat). The shiny exterior did not crack, scratch, or scuff after pushing the suitcase off a counter and hitting it with a bat, so we're sure it would even survive needing to be gate-checked.

Best With Laptop Compartment

July carry on pro snapsleeve.

  • Capacity 4.5 /5
  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Maneuverability 5 /5
  • Durability 4.5 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

The suitcase has extra features like a detachable laptop pocket and a USB port.

The outer laptop sleeve will come off with rough handling, so we recommend removing before storing the suitcase in overhead bins.

Characteristic of July's best luggage , the brand's Carry-on Pro suitcase has plenty of helpful features for ensuring a smooth packing and traveling experience. We love the sleek design and earth-toned color options, but our favorite part of the carry-on is the detachable front pocket for seamlessly traveling with a laptop. You can remove the padded pocket to use it as a laptop case, which is particularly useful for business travelers — an important feature to look for when shopping for carry-on luggage with a dedicated laptop compartment . Plus, the suitcase is outfitted with smart features, including USB and USB-C charging ports, a removable battery, and TSA-approved locks.

The interior of the carry-on is a breeze to pack thanks to the two spacious clamshell-style compartments, built-in compression system, and hidden laundry bag for keeping dirty clothes organized. And, even when the suitcase is packed full, we had no issues wheeling it over all types of surfaces with the help of the four 360-degree spinning wheels and adjustable handles. If you’re planning on gifting this suitcase or just want to add an extra special touch, you can personalize the bag with a name or initials for an extra fee.

The Details: 21.5 x 15 x 8.5 inches | 8.6 pounds | Polycarbonate | Front pocket | Personalization option

Most Durable

Bric's bellagio v2.0 carry-on spinner trunk.

Saks Fifth Avenue

  • Capacity 4 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Maneuverability 4.5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

The hardside material doesn’t scratch or dent easily.

It can be tricky to adjust the handle.

Small but mighty, we recommend this Bric’s carry-on if you’re in search of a suitcase that can handle everything from rough handling at the airport to the cobblestone streets of Paris . Made with a hardy polycarbonate shell and water-resistant zippers, this bag is equipped with all the necessary features for a lifetime of travels. In testing, we didn’t hold back on our durability test with the baseball bat by whacking it from all angles (wheels included) and tossing it off of a table to see if the exterior would hold up. We were thrilled to see that the bag didn’t scratch, dent, or crack under the pressure, and there was just a tiny scuff that we could rub off easily.

Apart from the superb durability, this suitcase has solid organization features on the interior with two main zippered compartments and pockets for smaller items — must-have qualities for a great travel trunk . While the handle feels plenty sturdy, we had some slight issues with it sticking, but we’re chalking that up to a slight inconvenience instead of a deal-breaker.

Best Budget

Amazon basics hardside spinner.

  • Capacity 5 /5

The hardside material is extremely durable when it comes to rough handling.

The suitcase is fairly basic and doesn’t come with extra features.

If you realize your suitcase is too large with days to spare before an international trip , Amazon Basics has you covered with fast shipping for Prime members. The 21-inch hardside spinner is made with a heavy-duty ABS material that proved to be exceptionally durable when we whacked the case with a baseball bat and tossed it off of a ladder. True to name, the interior of the suitcase has a minimalist design with two clamshell compartments, several zippered pockets, and compression straps. There could be a few more organizational features, but the suitcase was still very easy to pack and fill with clothing items, shoes, and a toiletry case. The spinner wheels rolled smoothly and the handle felt just as sturdy as the rest of the suitcase, so we think the bag has excellent value, especially for under $100.

The Details: 21.46 x 14.76 x 9.45 inches | 7.34 pounds | ABS | Expandable

Travel + Leisure / Vicky Wasik

Best Splurge

Rimowa original cabin.

The compression system on either side of the suitcase is a game changer for saving space.

The aluminum material scuffs easily.

Rimowa is top of the line when it comes to suitcase brands, and we think the Original Cabin carry-on is worth the investment. The exterior of this aluminum suitcase looks luxurious, and the interior offers plenty of functional features that make both packing and traveling a breeze. We’re big fans of the compression dividers on each compartment that help condense clothing and keep packed items in place during transit and when you open up the suitcase. The luggage itself weighs 9.5 pounds, which isn’t the lightest, but we’ve never had any issues lifting it overhead, and the ball-bearing mounted wheels glide over cobblestone and pavement without any extra effort needed. One thing to note is that aluminum does scratch and dent easier than polycarbonate cases, but rest assured that the sturdy material will be more resistant to cracks and will still keep your belongings safe.

The Details: 21.7 x 15.8 x 9.1 inches | 9.5 pounds | Aluminum

Delsey Chatelet Air 2.0 Carry-on Spinner

  • Organization 4 /5
  • Design 3.5 /5

It’s easy to maneuver through an airport with a sturdy handle and spinner wheels.

The carry-on can’t fit more than a few days’ worth of clothing.

This carry-on from Delsey comes in the brand’s most iconic design for looking effortlessly chic and elegant while traveling. While light-colored suitcases can be a dicey option, the suitcase is incredibly durable, and we didn’t see any scuffs, scratches, or dents tarnish the cream-colored bag after we hit it with a baseball bat and tossed it off of a ladder. Throughout our three months of long-term testing, we even checked this bag twice, and it came out still looking sleek and new. To complement a neutral suitcase exterior (which also comes in brown, blue, and blush), the interior is lined with a bolder orange color with several pockets and compression straps for packing. While the capacity is on the smaller end for a carry-on, we love that the compact size makes it incredibly easy to wheel the bag through the airport or lift it overhead for a smooth travel experience.

The Details: 21 x 13 x 10 inches | 6.4 pounds | Polycarbonate | USB port

Best Backpack

Tortuga travel backpack.

  • Comfort 5 /5

The capacity is just as big as a regular carry-on.

It can feel a bit heavy when it’s full.

The best part of Tortuga’s Travel Backpack is that it’s basically a suitcase without wheels. The 40-liter capacity rivals the volume of any carry-on and the backpack also has clamshell compartments for simple packing. Designed to fit a week’s worth of clothing, the bag can easily store enough clothing for a longer international trip, and we were even able to fit a packed tent with other clothing for a camping trip. Although the bag can get a bit heavy when it’s packed full, the padded back panel, straps, and hip belt helps distribute the weight to help with comfort while traveling. Other helpful features include a padded laptop sleeve, small zippered pockets, and two water bottle pockets. We can’t forget to mention that the bag is made with recycled sailcloth and is fully waterproof to protect your belongings if the weather takes a turn.

The Details: 21.7 x 13.8 x 7.9 inches | 4.5 pounds | Recycled sailcloth | 16-inch laptop pocket

Best Underseat

Calpak hue mini carry-on luggage.

  • Functionality 5 /5

The interior has excellent organizational features for clothing and technology.

The capacity (31.2 liters) could be too small for a longer trip.

Skip the stress of finding space in an overhead bin with Calpak’s Hue Mini underseater suitcase. To prove that it can fit under an airplane seat, we recreated that space in our lab and we had no issues sliding it into the spot. However, our favorite aspect of the suitcase is that the interior has superior organizational features for making the most out of the smaller capacity. There is a designated laptop pocket and several other mesh pockets for smaller items like undergarments, toiletries, or phone chargers. The other compartment is plenty spacious for clothing and a pair of shoes for a short trip. There aren’t any pockets on the exterior, but we still think the interior pockets more than make up for the lack of outside organization.

The Details: 16 x 14 x 8.5 inches | 6.4 pounds | Polycarbonate

Best Wheeled Duffel

Vera bradley foldable rolling duffel bag.

 Amazon

  • Portability 5 /5
  • Value 4.6 /5
  • Durability 4.6 /5

It has a separate bottom compartment for keeping shoes and clothing separate.

The materials don’t feel as durable as other duffel bags we’ve tried.

This carry-on duffel bag from Vera Bradley has tons of hidden features that make it an excellent piece of luggage to add to your collection. It’s small and lightweight enough that you can carry it like a tote bag, or you can opt to use the wheels and discrete handle that pops out to convert the duffel into a traditional suitcase so you won't have to choose between a weekender or duffel bag . During testing, we also loved that the duffel has a separate shoe compartment on the bottom of the bag for separating clothing from shoes or any other items you might not want to pack in the main compartment. The suitcase has one large zippered mesh pocket on the inside of the opening flap and one exterior pocket. While the bag feels durable and long-lasting, the ripstop polyester material isn’t waterproof, so you may not want to use this as a checked suitcase.

The Details: 21 x 13 x 10 inches | 5.6 pounds | Ripstop polyester

Other International Carry-ons We Liked

The suitcases highlighted below still scored highly during testing but we ran into some slight issues with maneuverability.

Coolife Carry-on with Pocket : The suitcase has some extra give which helps with packing, but it didn’t maneuver as well around obstacles as the other cases we tried.

Steamline Luggage The Sweetheart Carry-on : This vintage-style trunk would be ideal for a honeymoon or a trip to Paris, but it also only has two wheels which isn’t ideal for uneven terrain or crowded airports.

Since luggage is one of our favorite categories to test at Travel + Leisure , we’ve tested more than 200 pieces of luggage in both our lab using our airplane set and in real-world settings. We selected carry-ons from trusted brands like Away, Delsey, July, Béis, and more to evaluate based on traits like capacity, design, maneuverability, and durability to recommend the best ones on the market. To put together our best recommendations for international carry-ons, we selected our top-performing bags that fit under the general 21.7-inch maximum luggage height for most international airlines.

First, we test each suitcase in our New York City lab by putting the bags through a series of tests that kick off with packing the luggage with various clothing items, shoes, a toiletry bag, and other travel necessities. Then, we roll the wheeled luggage around cones and over gravel, carpet, and stone to judge the maneuverability and smoothness of the wheels. The last (and possibly best) part of the test includes dropping the suitcases off of a table and hitting them with a baseball bat several times to gauge the durability. We also use our airplane set to lift the bags into real overhead bins and to see how well they fit underneath real airplane seats. After lab testing is complete, we send out each suitcase for our editors to continue testing while traveling.

Tips for Buying an International Carry-on

Factor in trip type and destination.

Suitcases, backpacks, and duffel bags all count as carry-ons as long as the bag is under the size limitations set by the airline. For destinations that require bulkier clothing like Iceland, or most countries in the winter, you might want to plan on bringing a checked bag for clothes and one of the smaller carry-on suitcases. If you’re planning on backpacking during your international travels where lighter packing is required, we recommend traveling with a carry-on that has superb portability like a backpack or wheeled duffel.

Consider weight

Most international airlines have carry-on weight limits of 15 to 22 pounds, so you might want to invest in a portable luggage scale to ensure your bag is under the weight limit. However, British Airways offers the least strict weight restrictions since they allow you to carry a bag up to 50 pounds. It’s important to double-check with your airline before you begin packing for your trip to confirm the size restrictions ahead of time.

Look for organizational features

Since international carry-ons have to be a bit smaller than usual, the amount of usable space also decreases. Organizational features can be a game-changer for making the most out of your carry-on, so be sure to look for suitcases with compression straps to pack down clothing or exterior pockets for laptops or other last-minute items. If your suitcase doesn’t offer many pockets or a compression system, packing cubes can help with saving space and organization, too.

Generally, international carry-ons have to be smaller than the standard size carry-on for domestic flights, which is about 22 x 14 x 9 inches. International carry-ons usually have to be under 21.7 inches in height, including the handle and wheels, and there are often stricter weight limits, too. The part that makes things slightly difficult is that size restrictions vary by carrier, so you’ll need to check ahead of time to prevent any last-minute baggage fees or gate-checking your suitcase.

Just like dimensions, weight limitations are determined by each individual airline, so it’s essential to check with your carrier before arriving at the airport. Most international airlines require carry-ons to weigh less than 15 to 22 pounds with the exception of several larger carriers — like British Airways, KLM, and Air France — that have less strict limitations.

Fly smarter with this American Airlines’ carry-on size guide

american airlines international travel carry on

Every airline has its specific set of regulations when it comes to carry-on luggage . We’ve put together this guide to help you avoid paying unexpected fees when flying with American Airlines.

International Carry-On Size

Last Updated on September 22, 2021

So you’re planning an international flight and wondering what the carry on size is going to be…

Let’s get one thing straight. Each airline around the world is free to set whatever baggage size limits they wish.

There is no standardized, official international carry on size.

In the United States, there is something approaching consensus that carry on size is 22 x 14 x 9 inches. Alaska, Allegiant, American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue, and United have all chosen this carry on luggage size limit, and that limit doesn’t change if you are flying internationally with those airlines.

But around the world, there is no designated international carry on size. Each airline sets its own hand luggage size limit.

Not only that… some international airlines have weight limits too!

But it’s not totally random…

Birds Of A Feather Flock Together

There are regional cliques where groups of airlines have the same carry on dimensions.

Luckily there is a place where you can check the size limits for international carry on luggage. We’ve compiled all the international carry on sizes in a chart.

It’s a long chart, so please use the filters to find the country or continent you are most interested in, especially if you are viewing this page on mobile.

You can also enter the size of your carry on bag in the “min” field and it will show only the airlines that will accept a carry on bag of that size.

Airline names are linked to the relevant baggage information page on the airline website.

And you can click on the + to get more information about permitted personal items.

The International Carry On Size Table

European carry on size.

There are a lot of airlines in Europe.

55 x 40 x 20 cm (21.6 x 15.7 x 7.87 inches) is one common size limit. I counted 15 airlines with this limit. If you are shopping for a bag this size make sure you get a lightweight version .

But you will also frequently see 55 x 40 x 23 cm (21.6 x 15.7 x 9 inches). I saw 10 airlines with this limit.

And the French and Italian airlines squeeze the width rather than the depth to get 55 x 35 x 25 cm (21.6 x 13.77 x 9.8 inches).

British Airways and a few other British airlines still offer a generous 22 x 18 x 10 inches or close to that (56 x 45 x 25 cm).

Asian International Carry On Size

Quite a few Asian airlines have adopted a 22 x 14 x 9 inches limit, but there are a variety of size limits.

The main difference is that there will likely be a weight limit that you need to adhere to.

Be careful here. A 15 lb weight limit is not a lot if your empty suitcase already weights 7 or 8 lbs.

The Verdict

It’s best to figure out which airline you’ll be using on your trip and double-check the carry on limits on their website.

If you are planning on doing a lot of international travel and only want to own 1 suitcase then a carry on bag that is 21 x 14 x 8 will be compliant with a lot of airlines around the world.

The best solution if you are fit and healthy enough is to opt for a carry on backpack instead of a suitcase. These can be packed and squashed to fit many airport sizers around the world.

Guide to International Carry-On & Luggage Standards

International Luggage by the window at the airport

International flights differ significantly from domestic flights. For one thing, while you can often travel with only a carry-on domestically, most travelers require at least two pieces of luggage for international travel. Individual airline policies determine fees for international luggage, your international flight baggage allowance, and the luggage weight limit for international flights. Your destination and origin point also play a role in determining baggage allowance and fees, as does your frequent flier status and whether you’re flying first class, business, or economy.

A general overview of how airlines handle luggage for international flights follows. Before you travel, it’s best to contact your airline and confirm their luggage policies, as airline regulations for luggage change frequently.

Luggage Weight Limits

The luggage weight limit for international flights differs from domestic US weight limits, which can become a problem if you need to switch between domestic and international flights to reach your destination. Check airline regulations carefully, and pack with the lowest weight allowance for your carry-on and checked luggage for all flights.

Carry-on Weight Limits

Carry-on baggage weight limits for international travel differ significantly from domestic carry-on rules. Most domestic flights limit  carry-on suitcases , bags, and backpacks to 35 lbs.

The allowable weight of carry-on luggage differs from airline to airline, but your carry-on luggage generally cannot weigh more than 16 to 18 lbs for international flights. British Airways is an exception and sets its carry-on weight limit at a whopping 51 lbs.

Checked Bags

The checked luggage weight limit for international flights is usually the same as for domestic flights: 50 lbs. Most airlines set 50 lbs as their weight limit to reduce the risk of injury to baggage handlers.

As with carry-on luggage, there are exceptions to checked luggage weight limits. International flights in the US and European Union set a maximum weight of 70 lbs for checked luggage, although you may have to pay fees if you exceed the 50 lb limit guideline. Individual airlines can also set lower weight allowances for international checked luggage. Once again, check with all airlines on your flight itinerary to verify their luggage weight limits.

International Suitcase Sizes

International  luggage sizes  are just as important as weight limits when choosing your travel luggage. Size restrictions for international airlines may be expressed in inches or centimeters by height, width, and depth. Alternately, all three measurements are added together to equal a single dimension expressed in linear inches or centimeters. Be aware that most airlines outside of the US will measure bags in centimeters.

Personal Items

Many international airlines don’t have exact size restrictions for personal items. But the most common size limit is 40 inches (102cm) (length, plus width, plus height) or 18 x 14 x 8in (46 x 36 x 20cm). If it can safely fit under the seat in front of you or in the seat back pocket without being a hazard, it’s considered the appropriate size.

This will, however, vary depending on the airline. Smaller planes won’t have as much room under the seats as larger planes. Of course, double-check your chosen airline before you go.

International Carry on

Carry ons for international flights are usually a maximum of 22 inches (55cm) tall, 15 inches (40cm) wide, and 10 inches (25cm) deep. Be aware that this can cause difficulties at the boarding gate, because carry-ons accepted by domestic airlines in the USA are too big for international routes and are likely to be checked at the departure gate. Also note that s ome limits will even vary if you fly between two cities in the same country.

Many airlines also limit how much your carry-on can weigh with the most common maximum weight limit of 22 pounds (10kg). Your luggage might be weighed at the gate, and if it exceeds the requirements, you may have to pay a fee to check it at the gate.

Carry-on Luggage Sizes: International Airlines

Checked luggage.

Checked luggage on an international flight has to meet size restrictions just as it would on a domestic flight. When transferring from a domestic airline to an international one, ensure that your luggage meets the smallest requirements to avoid unwanted oversized bag fees.

Although checked luggage varies by airline, the standard size is 62 linear inches (156cm). This typically corresponds to 27 inches (68cm) x 21 inches (53cm) x 14 inches (35cm). The international flight baggage weight limit averages 50 pounds (23kg), but some airlines allow up to 70 pounds (32kg) for their business-class and first-class passengers.

International Flight Baggage Allowance

Your international flight baggage allowance, and any associated fees, will vary depending on the individual airline’s regulations for luggage. If you’re a frequent flier, hold elite status, or traveling first-class or in business, you may be able to board with extra carry-on or avoid baggage fees. Check with your airline to see if this applies to you.

Personal Item and Carry-on

Most international flights allow you to board with one personal item and one piece of carry-on. There are exceptions, most notably Bolivia’s Amaxonas, which only permits carry-on luggage and does not allow personal items.

Related: Explore our entire line up of carry-on luggage to find sizes that’ll meet both regional and international luggage sizes.

In some airlines, such as Royal Dutch Airlines, first class and business passengers can board with two pieces of carry-on with a combined weight of 40 lbs and one personal item.

In addition to personal items, most international airlines allow you to board with jackets, coats, and baby strollers.

International flights allow one, and often two, pieces of checked luggage per passenger. International luggage allowance is often influenced by whether the flight is intracontinental (within the same continent) or intercontinental (across the ocean or spanning different continents).

For instance, American Airlines allows passengers two checked bags when flying to or from Japan, South Korea, and China, but only one bag when traveling between the USA and Mexico. Plane size, the airport infrastructure at your destination, and how much luggage passengers typically pack for a particular flight also impact baggage allowances.

Most airlines allow you to check additional bags for a fee, with each extra bag costing more than the last. Your airline might offer an international flight baggage allowance of two free checked bags, for instance, with a $125 fee for a third bag and $200 for each additional bag after that.

For oversized, extremely heavy, or oddly shaped items, check airline regulations for luggage before flying. Some airlines have separate weight and size limits for skis, surfboards, golf bags, and other items. For heavy items, the airline will probably have a maximum weight allowance. United, for example, has a 100 lb. limit for any checked item. Necessary medical equipment may or may not be treated as checked luggage, depending on the airline.

Whether you’re flying domestically or internationally, every airline has its own carry-on luggage size restrictions. There is no one-size-fits-all approach, so you need to check your airline’s specific policy before traveling to ensure your carry-on bag isn’t rejected with potential additional charges.

Below, you’ll find a helpful chart detailing the most popular airlines’ carry-on restrictions, including the size and weight of a standard carry-on, and whether this varies due to the cabin you’re traveling in. We’ve also covered checked luggage sizes and allowances , too.

Don’t forget that there are many ways to avoid paying for baggage fees such as carry-ons and that’s what we cover in our in-depth article.

In some cases, you’ll see that the airline has a rule about maximum linear dimensions. That means that, when you add the length, width, and depth of a piece of luggage together, the sum can’t exceed a certain number. For example, if you have a suitcase that’s 28 inches long, 20 inches wide, and 18 inches deep, the linear dimensions would total 66 inches, too big for many airlines.

Carry-On Luggage Size Chart for Major Airlines

Unless specified, the maximum weight allowance is across your standard carry-on luggage and personal item combined.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is considered carry-on luggage.

There’s no industry standard for sizes for carry-on luggage, with every airline assigning their own size and weight restrictions. If you want to purchase a carry-on bag that would be accepted by most airlines, then the most common maximum size would be 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm), including handles and wheels.

Which carry-on luggage is best?

The best carry-on bag depends on your own requirements. For example, do you need a wheelie case or a backpack, or a bag with a laptop compartment or built-in security? We’ve rounded up what we consider the best carry-on luggage bags for any traveler , ranging from soft-sided and hardshell wheelies to convenient backpacks.

Is a backpack considered carry-on?

A backpack would be considered a carry-on item if it adheres to the maximum size restrictions of a specific airline. Most airlines have a larger size allowance for a standard carry-on piece and slightly smaller one for a personal item (where permitted).

What is not allowed in a carry-on bag?

For safety reasons, there are certain items that are prohibited to be stored in carry-on luggage. These include individual containers with liquids over 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or a combined amount of liquids over 1 quart (1 liter); sharp objects such as scissors, blades, or pen knives; firearms; sporting equipment such as baseball bats or hockey sticks; tools; and lighters, matches, or other flammable items.

Is there a weight limit for carry-on luggage?

As with size restrictions, there are no industry standards for maximum weight allowances for carry-on luggage. These are defined by each individual airline, with some airlines actually not publishing a specific weight restriction — just that you must be able to lift the bag into the overhead compartment yourself.

It’s also worth checking whether the airline’s stated weight allowance applies just to your carry-on piece or whether it applies to the combined weight of your carry-on and personal item.

What is the difference between a personal item and carry-on?

Many airlines allow passengers to bring a personal item in addition to a carry-on bag. A personal item is usually a smaller bag, such as handbag, briefcase, or laptop bag , that can be stored under the seat in front of you. Some airlines specify size and weight restrictions for personal items, while many don’t specify maximum sizes or weights.

What is hand baggage only?

If you’ve booked a “hand baggage only” fare (sometimes referred to as a basic fare), this means that you may only bring hand baggage that is within the airline’s restrictions. No checked baggage is included. Depending on your airline, hand baggage may include 1 standard carry-on bag and 1 smaller personal item. Each airline sets its own size and weight restrictions for carry-on, so check the table above for more information.

What does TSA allow for carry-on?

TSA allows passengers to pack certain items in their carry-on baggage and prohibits others. Liquids may be brought on board under the 3-1-1 rule: a maximum of 3.4 ounces per container up to a total of 1 quart, stored within a clear, zip-top bag, with 1 bag permitted per passenger. Exemptions to this rule are made for infant necessities or required medication. Items such as lighters, blades, and baseball bats are not permitted in your carry-on.

See more information in our guide to how to easily get through TSA airport security .

What is the standard size of a carry-on bag?

There are no universal standards for carry-on baggage, with each airline setting its own size and weight restrictions. If you want to purchase a bag that adheres to most airline standards, then look for a case that’s no larger than 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm), including all handles and wheels.

Can I take my phone charger in my carry-on?

General chargers for electronic devices can be packed as carry-on or into your checked baggage . If you’re using a portable power bank , then most airlines require you to pack this in your carry-on bag. This is because of the risk of lithium batteries catching fire in the hold.

Is a 24-inch suitcase a carry-on?

A 24-inch suitcase would be considered a carry-on by some airlines — but not all. Some airlines state maximum linear dimension only, so as long as your other 2 measurements are smaller to allow for the 24-inch length, then this would be fine. But generally, a suitcase measuring 22 x 14 x 9 inches would be the most widely accepted. This includes American Airlines and United Airlines .

You'll need access to your passport at airport security, when you board the plane and when you're filling out entry forms, so keep the passport holder as well as a pen within reach. Once you arrive at your destination, put the passport wallet somewhere safe at your lodging or – if you feel inclined to keep it with you – stow it in your travel purse, belt bag or backpack to ensure it's safe while you explore.

Pack your toiletry bag in your carry-on so you can easily freshen up and so that you'll have essentials like toothpaste and deodorant in the event your checked luggage is lost in transit. Also consider packing toiletries that are useful for travel (particularly the dry air on planes), even if they're not part of your daily routine at home.

U.S. News senior travel editor Marisa Méndez recommends including a facial moisturizer and a body lotion in your toiletry bag. "My skin always dries out on flights and it's nice to have something to soothe my skin," she says.

"I always love having facial spray to freshen up after the flight," says Elizabeth Von Tersch , also a senior travel editor at U.S. News. She always keeps one in her purse. " Mario Badescu and Evian are great." These facial sprays help to moisturize your skin after the drying environment on a plane or give you a little midday pick-me-up.

When packing your carry-on bag for a flight, you'll want to have a clear quart-sized bag that meets Transportation Security Administration guidelines for liquids and gels. Some Dopp kits or toiletry bags include a removable bag for travel-size liquids, or you can buy this reusable TSA-approved clear bag on Amazon . Put any liquids or gels you're traveling with in this bag, including shampoo, lotion, liquid makeup items and hand sanitizer.

Keep in mind that all liquids and gels must be in travel-size bottles or containers measuring 3.4 ounces or less. Remember: You'll need to remove this clear quart-sized bag from your carry-on bag at security, so consider packing it in an external pocket or an easy-to-find spot in your carry-on suitcase. To learn more about TSA regulations, consult our article about what is allowed in a carry-on .

Never stow prescription medications in checked baggage : If luggage is lost or delayed, replacing these medications while traveling can be extremely challenging or even impossible. If you take multiple medications, consider a travel pill sorter like the EZY Dose Pill Organizer , available for about $5 on Amazon.

Suitcase with blank Luggage Tag

Even if your carry-on has a coordinating identification tag, consider purchasing a unique luggage tag that will help it stand out. This is especially useful in the (common) event you have to gate-check your carry-on due to limited space in the overhead bin, and then locate it on the cramped jet bridge post-flight.

Resting throughout your journey can help you feel refreshed when you reach your destination and make the time pass a little quicker. But nothing can (literally) cramp your style like a stiff neck from sleeping wrong. Choose a comfortable neck pillow for travel like the top-rated Cabeau Evolution S3 or the MLVOC Travel Pillow (less than $30 on Amazon).

Packing cubes aren't just for organizing clothing and shoes. Maximize space in your carry-on bag with these handy travel compartments . While Eagle Creek's PACK-IT line features the top-rated compression packing cubes on the market, many travelers also swear by the Veken Packing Cubes , which are usually available for $20 or less on Amazon.

It's easy to let your charging cords get lost at the bottom of your bag or get your headphones tangled somewhere in your tote. A handy tech organizer with zippered compartments and sections for specific cords, such as the BAGSMART Tech Organizer, can help reduce tangled messes (and the need for you to search for your essentials in a tight airplane cabin).

Smaller than packing cubes, zippered pouches and silicone bags like the Stasher Silicone Reusable Storage Bags are perfect for storing everything from snacks to scrunchies. If traveling with family, consider different colored pouches for each traveler's items so you can easily tell them apart without removing everything from the bag.

Gotta be clean for breakfast

Let's face it – traveling can introduce your body to a host of unwanted germs. Carrying a bottle of travel hand sanitizer will keep your hands clean on the go, even if there's not a bathroom nearby. To disinfect surfaces like airplane tray tables, arm rests or tables, consider having a pack of disinfecting wipes at your disposal as well.

During a flight, the low humidity and high altitude can have a drying effect on your skin and lips. To combat the dry air, consider packing a hydrating lip balm like this new stick option by Aquaphor . What's more, if you choose a balm over a liquid moisturizer, you won't need to store this product in your clear TSA-approved liquids bag.

Bluetooth and wireless headphones are great, but when you're flying they aren't always compatible with airplane entertainment systems. If you're planning to watch a movie (or maybe just tune out your seatmates), buy some inexpensive wired earbuds like this well-rated set by Jogteg . Alternatively, you can purchase an AirFly ($35 or less on Amazon), which wirelessly transmits audio via Bluetooth.

Having a book or magazine in your carry-on bag is always a good idea. Whether you encounter a delayed flight, a long layover or a plane with less than stellar in-flight entertainment, a good book will help pass the time.

On everything from red-eye flights to international jaunts, a good eye mask can block out light from overhead, the seatback screens and plane windows. The Nodpod Sleep Mask is especially relaxing since it's weighted.

"Even if you plan to grab a bite at the airport or on the plane (if that's an option), pack some snacks," says Amanda Norcross , content and SEO strategist for travel at U.S. News. "Flying is unpredictable and stressful for many travelers, and 'hanger' only makes things worse." Also put chewing gum in your carry-on to freshen breath and help with ear popping.

It's not always easy to find a charging station at the airport, and there are restrictions when it comes to packing batteries in your carry-on baggage for any flight. One option that meets Federal Aviation Administration guidelines is the Anker 537 Power Bank (PowerCore 26K for Laptop) . This device can charge a laptop, smartphone or tablet quickly, to keep your devices running even on a long flight.

A woman's hand holds a travel adapter on white background.

For international travel – since different countries use different plug shapes – packing a universal adapter or converter will enable you to charge your devices and other electronics. Before purchasing, consider what your needs will be, especially regarding the shape of the wall outlet plugs and the voltage of the countries you'll be visiting.

A travel adapter such as the EPICKA Universal Travel Adapter on Amazon makes plugs from the U.S. fit into electrical outlets around the world, whereas a travel converter like the GEARGO 230W Voltage Converter converts the electricity voltage. If you're traveling overseas from the U.S., you'll need both of these devices to use electronics like laptops, curling irons and hair straighteners (unless your device is dual voltage, like the BaBylissPRO Nano Mini Straightening Iron ).

Whether you're traveling to a cooler climate or looking to stay cozy on a chilly flight, a comfy blanket can make all the difference. The Travel Blanket from Away has thermoregulating technology, snaps to connect a travel pillow and pouches to tuck your feet. What's more, it folds up into a handy carrying pouch when not in use. For a more affordable but still well-rated option, check out the EverSnug Travel Blanket .

For minor injuries like blisters from new shoes or unexpected cuts and scrapes, pack a first-aid kit with Band-Aids and triple antibiotic ointment like Neosporin in your bag.

Close up shot of an Indonesian woman with face mask opening the cap of her reusable plastic water bottle, ready to drink. She's trying to stay hydrated during long haul flights amidst Covid-19 pandemic.

Staying hydrated while traveling is a must. Pack a reusable water bottle like the Corkcicle Canteen Triple Insulated Stainless Steel Water Bottle to fill up at the airport before your flight and refill throughout your travels. Even better – an insulated bottle will stay cold for hours.

Whether it's a long flight or layover (or maybe you just need a good distraction), having some activities like a miniature coloring book and mini colored pencils or small packable games can be really useful.

"I took a small coloring book and a small set of pencils on a flight once and it was life-changing," Méndez says. U.S. News digital producer for travel Leilani Osmundson says she and her husband love to bring a deck of cards and portable two-player games to pass the time.

For day trips, picnics, carrying an extra pair of shoes or anything in between, a lightweight reusable bag like the Lug Packable Tote Bag is a helpful addition to your carry-on. It'll save on single-use plastic bags and provide extra space for unexpected purchases.

For added comfort and cleanliness, consider a reusable airplane seat cover, like this one by SeatRx . Constructed from breathable materials, these seat covers are machine-washable, have a universal fit and come with a storage pouch.

"I typically wear a lightweight jacket on the plane to free up space in my carry-on," says Norcross. "If the plane is too warm, I can easily stuff it under the seat in front of me with my backpack." If you're in need of a simple yet effective packable jacket , check out the Amazon Essentials Puffer Jacket .

Flying and walking can cause feet to swell, while some travels may take you to a completely different climate. Packing an extra pair of shoes in a water-resistant packing cube, or within a designated shoe compartment in a weekender bag, keeps other carry-on contents clean and gives you footwear options.

Whether your coffee spills off your tray table or you lose your checked baggage, an extra outfit is handy to have. Pack a versatile outfit (including underwear) into your carry-on bag so you have a backup option, or perhaps have your swimwear and flip-flops ready to head directly to the beach.

Whether you want to change into a comfy pair of ankle socks to nap, or you got caught in the rain on the way to the airport and now have wet socks, having a change of socks can be useful. For maximum comfort, consider compression socks for travel , which can stimulate circulation to help reduce leg swelling caused by flying or sitting for extended periods of time.

What not to pack in a carry-on bag

When packing a carry-on bag or suitcase, it's important to note that some items are prohibited on all flights, due to Federal Aviation Administration regulations. The prohibited list includes aerosol products (such as anti-static spray or pepper spray), lithium or lithium-ion batteries, firearms and ammunition, flammables, and explosives. For more details on what you can and can't pack in your carry-on, visit the TSA's What Can I Bring? and the FAA's Pack Safe websites.

Liquids Rule

You are allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in your carry-on bag and through the checkpoint. These are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. Placing these items in the small bag and separating from your carry-on baggage facilitates the screening process. Pack items that are in containers larger than 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters in checked baggage.

Any liquid, aerosol, gel, cream or paste that alarms during screening will require additional screening.

  • Medications
  • Infant and child nourishments

Inbound International Flights

You may carry duty free liquids in secure, tamper–evident bags, more than 3.4 oz or 100 ml in your carry-on bag if:

  • The duty free liquids were purchased internationally and you are traveling to the United States with a connecting flight.
  • The liquids are packed in a transparent, secure, tamper-evident bag by the retailer and do not show signs of tampering when presented to TSA for screening.
  • The original receipt for the liquids is present and the purchase was made within 48 hours.

The items inside the secure, tamper-evident bags must be screened and cleared. Any item that alarms or is unable to be screened will not be permitted in your carry-on bag. We recommend packing all liquids, gels, and aerosols that are over 3.4 oz or 100 ml in your checked baggage, even if they are in a secure, tamper-evident bag.

Liquids more than 3.4 oz or 100 ml not in a secure, tamper-evident bag must be packed in checked baggage.

How Many Bags Are Allowed on International Flights?

E mbarking on your first international journey can be an exciting yet daunting experience, especially when it comes to understanding the nuances of baggage requirements. While there are similarities between domestic and international flights, the rules for luggage can differ significantly.

  • International Flight Baggage Allowance: Discover the standard luggage limits for international travel.
  • Luggage Size and Weight Guidelines for International Flights: Keep carry-ons within 22x14x9 inches and checked luggage under 70 pounds to sail smoothly through check-in.
  • Managing Excess Baggage on International Trips: Over your limit? Expect to pay about $100 or more for extra or overweight bags. Pro tip: Shipping luggage can be a budget-friendly alternative to airline fees.

International Flight Baggage Requirements: A Closer Look

For those accustomed to the more relaxed baggage policies of domestic flights, navigating international flight luggage allowances can be a bit of a challenge.

Typically, international airlines permit passengers to carry one piece of hand luggage and one or two pieces of checked baggage without extra charges. However, additional bags or overweight luggage will incur fees.

Carry-On and Checked Baggage Allowances on International Flights

On most international flights, passengers are allowed to bring along a personal item (like a small bag, backpack, or laptop case) and a carry-on bag free of charge.

The allowance for checked luggage usually includes one or two pieces per passenger. These allowances can vary based on the airline, the destination, and the origin of the flight. Some airlines might allow two checked bags for specific destinations while limiting it to one for others.

It's essential to verify the specific baggage policies with your airline, as what is included in your ticket can vary. Sometimes, the cost of checked luggage might already be factored into your ticket price.

Additionally, budget airlines may impose higher baggage fees to offset operational costs like fuel prices.

Advice for Managing Overweight or Excess Luggage

If your luggage exceeds the allowed limits or weight, purchasing extra space or paying overweight charges is always an option. Generally, airlines start charging from around $100 for additional or overweight bags.

To save costs, consider pre-purchasing extra luggage space or weight, as fees tend to be higher at the airport.

Understanding Luggage Size and Weight Restrictions

For carry-on bags, a typical size limit is 22 x 14 x 9 inches , with a weight restriction of around 40-45 liters .

Checked luggage should ideally weigh between 50-70 pounds and measure under 62 linear inches (height + width + depth). Exceeding these limits might lead to extra charges.

Insider Tip: For checked luggage, it's usually smarter to go with fabric luggage, unless it's extremely durable, such as the [amazon link="B003BFFRQ8" title="Pelican cases"]. That's because less durable hardside suitcases will crack more often when they're thrown around in the airplane's cargo hold. A good fabric checked suitcase would be something from Samsonite or Travelpro, such as the [amazon link="B07QWF3FDZ" title="Travelpro Crew Versapack"] (full review over here .)

Restrictions and Guidelines for Checked Luggage Contents

Most airlines have standard policies regarding items permitted in checked luggage.

Items like lighters without fuel, gels, electronic devices, and certain other items are generally not allowed in checked baggage but can be carried in hand luggage.

Handling Special Luggage Situations

When traveling with items like musical instruments or sports equipment on international flights, it's important to be aware that these items are often treated differently than regular luggage. Each airline has its own set of rules and guidelines for handling such specialized equipment, and it's crucial to be informed about them before you travel.

Musical instruments, due to their value and fragility, might require special handling or even additional fees. Some airlines allow small instruments as carry-ons, while larger ones may need to be checked in with special arrangements or protective casing. In some cases, you might even have to purchase an extra seat to accommodate a large instrument.

Similarly, sports equipment like skis, golf clubs, or surfboards typically falls under a different category in baggage rules. These items are usually larger and have specific shape requirements, and airlines might charge extra fees for transporting them. They might also have weight and size restrictions separate from standard baggage.

It's always a good idea to contact your airline well in advance to inquire about their policies regarding musical instruments and sports equipment. This way, you can make the necessary preparations, whether it's packing your items in a certain way or budgeting for additional fees. Checking these details ahead of time will help ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience with your special items.

What Can I Do Instead of Checking In Extra Luggage?

If you know your bags are going to go overweight or you have a lot more bags than allowed and you don’t want to check them in the airport, there’s always the option of shipping them straight to your final destination instead.

Several companies offer you the option of shipping your luggage from your house to your next destination in almost any corner of the world. When you’re on the way back home, you can also opt to ship your bags straight home instead. This is especially helpful if you don’t want to have to wait long lines while checking in your luggage or if you want to avoid excess baggage fees.

Here are some of the companies that can ship your luggage worldwide:

  • Luggage Concierge
  • Luggage Forward
  • Luggage Free

Additional Considerations for International Flights

Remember, international flights require earlier arrival at the airport compared to domestic flights, often around three hours before departure, to allow time for baggage check-in and immigration procedures. Utilizing online check-in services can save time and hassle at the airport.

Final Thoughts on International Travel and Baggage

Embarking on international travel, particularly for the first time, can feel like navigating uncharted waters, with luggage considerations being a significant part of the voyage. The key to a stress-free journey lies in understanding and preparing for the differences in baggage rules and regulations.

The nuances of international flight luggage policies, from carry-on allowances to checked baggage fees , can vary widely across airlines and destinations. Being informed about these differences is crucial. Checking your airline's specific baggage policies beforehand can prevent unexpected surprises and additional costs at the airport. Remember, what might be a standard practice for one airline could be an extra charge on another.

When it comes to managing your luggage, think strategically. Packing efficiently can not only save space but also potentially reduce costs. Investing in luggage that meets standard international size and weight limits can be a wise decision in the long run. Moreover, consider the nature of your travel: business, leisure, adventure, or a mix, and pack accordingly.

In cases where you have extra or overweight luggage, explore alternatives like shipping your bags or pre-purchasing additional luggage allowance online, as these options might be more economical than paying at the airport. Remember, airlines often offer discounts for managing your luggage online before the flight.

Lastly, embrace the learning experience that comes with international travel. Each journey will teach you something new about navigating different airline policies, packing efficiently, and managing travel logistics. With each trip, you'll become more adept at handling the complexities of international travel, transforming from a novice explorer into a seasoned globetrotter. So pack your bags, check your documents, and embark on your adventure with confidence and a sense of preparedness. Remember, every journey is an opportunity to learn, grow, and experience the wonders of our world.

What are the typical size and weight limits for carry-on luggage on international flights?

Generally, carry-on bags should not exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inches and weigh around 40-45 liters.

Can I bring additional bags on international flights, and what are the fees?

Yes, you can usually bring additional bags, but fees start around $100 and vary by airline.

Are there items I can't pack in my checked luggage on international flights?

Yes, items like lighters without fuel, certain gels, and electronics are typically not allowed in checked luggage but can be in a carry-on.

What's the best way to handle special items like musical instruments or sports equipment?

Check with the airline for specific guidelines, as these items may have unique handling requirements.

Is it cheaper to ship my luggage than check it on an international flight?

It can be, especially if you're facing overweight or excess baggage fees. Shipping services offer an alternative that can sometimes be more cost-effective.

Unlike a domestic trip, an international travel packing list requires a longer checklist of must-haves. This is the time to invest in reliable gear that will prepare you for any kind of climate, as well as versatile accessories that you can use for sightseeing, going out and the journey to your destination.

Going abroad requires a longer checklist of must-haves when you’re packing for international travel.

Depending on where you’re traveling to, you should be able to find anything you’ve forgotten in your destination, but there are some essentials you’ll need on the way there, like a good multi-use power adaptor and TSA-approved toiletry bottles no bigger than 3.4 ounces.

The international travel packing list below will prepare you for any travel mishap, whether it be a backseat entertainment system malfunction or an unexpected downpour at the beach. For even more options, read our guide to the best travel accessories to bring with you on every trip.

What To Pack In Your Carry-On

Your carry-on bag isn’t just extra storage for items that couldn’t fit in your checked bag. It’s your repository for everything you might need in transit and, on the off chance that your checked luggage gets lost, it might be your only luggage for a few days. That means it should contain everything you need to keep you comfortable and fresh, while any essentials you may need on hand—like medication or documents—should go in your personal item. If you’re looking to secure a solid carry-on for years of future trips, check out our guides to the best carry-on luggage and the best carry-on backpacks .

A Versatile And Spacious Personal Item

Fjällräven kånken totepack.

Available in more than a dozen colors, this stylish unisex bag can be worn as a backpack or converted to sling over the shoulder like a tote bag. The soft-sided water-resistant material will protect your belongings from spills and the compact size means it will easily fit into that narrow space below the seat in front of you. With a sleeve for 13-inch laptop, plus an extra 14 liters of volume, there’s plenty of room to store your extra snacks, reading materials and even a sweater, if the plane gets cold.

A Solid International Power Adapter

Redagod universal travel adapter.

You can rely on this top-rated international adapter wherever you go. It features four outlet types that will work in the UK, the U.S., Australia and across Europe, and has four USB ports and one USB C port, so you can charge up to five devices at the same time. As long as you’ve got this in your carry-on, you’ll have every kind of plug you’ll need at your fingertips, so all of your devices can be charged in the same place.

An External Power Bank With Wireless Charging

Anker powercore iii wireless portable charger.

In case you’re ever on a long bus or train ride when you can’t plug in, or if you know you’re going to burn out your phone’s battery taking photos and videos on a full day of sightseeing, an external power bank can save the day. This model can charge up to three devices at a time with 4.5 hours of battery time, but the key feature is its wireless charging. If you’re doing a lot of water-based activities, moisture can get into your phone’s charging port which will prevent you from charging the traditional way. With this portable charger, you’ll always have a backup if something goes awry.

A Zippered Passport Wallet

Boacay travel document organizer.

There are a lot of stylish passport wallets on the market, but this is the most functional choice. It’s the one place where you can keep all your important travel documents, with a zipper that gives you the extra security to know that nothing will slip out when you’re not paying attention. It can hold up to four passports in multiple slots, and I love the internal pockets for storing my loose SIM cards. When I’m at the terminal, my favorite feature is the external pocket which I use to hold my boarding pass in a place I can quickly access.

A Game Console You Like

Nintendo switch lite.

Gaming preferences aside, the Nintendo Switch Lite is a perfect console for travel. It doesn’t have the multiplayer features of the traditional Switch, but the price reflects that, and it matters less if you’re mainly playing to pass the time on long flights. It comes in multiple colors, which is great for personalization but there is only 32GB of storage so you will have to load up the games you like before you fly.

A Pair Of Noise-Cancelling Headphones

Infurture active noise-cancelling headphones.

I recently just replaced these headphones for the exact same model after nearly four years of use—that’s how much I stand by them. Comfortable, affordable and very effective at drowning out the hum of the plane or any chatty neighbors, I rarely leave the house without them, let alone the country. The key feature for international travel is the aux cord, which allows me to plug into the in-flight entertainment system directly so that I don’t have to use the flimsy wired headsets the airlines provide.

The Last Toiletry Containers You Will Ever Buy

Cadence travel containers.

Refillable containers are the best way to make sure you’re always complying with TSA regulations, but I’ve been through a few sets that are prone to leaks and feel impossible to clean. That’s why I love these innovative (and incredibly chic-looking) magnetic pods. Not only are they sturdy and leak-proof, but the magnetic labels can easily switched and the bottle sizes can be adjusted. Plus, they really elevate the look of any bathroom counter.

A Lightweight Layer For Men

Arc’teryx men's delta jacket.

Airplane cabins are usually cold, but they tend to feel colder when you’re traveling in the summer and aren’t wearing and packing your usual winter layers. This incredibly lightweight jacket from Arc’teryx is a smart solution because it can be folded down into such a small package, it barely takes up any room at all in your bag.

A Lightweight Layer For Women

Arc’teryx women’s delta jacket.

I also highly recommend this jacket in its women’s style. Designed for alpine environments, its breathable and moisture-wicking fleece ensures you’ll stay comfortable all through the long travel day and it’s a great layer to have if you’re planning outdoor adventures.

Compression Socks For Healthy Circulation

Bluemaple 6-pack copper compression socks.

If your feet are prone to swelling on long flights, a pair of compression socks can help relieve pain and discomfort by improving blood flow when you’re sedentary or supporting your muscles when you’re walking or standing for long hours. These BlueMaple sets come in a variety of styles so you can express your personality through fun patterns or match your outfit with a neutral color.

What To Pack In Your Checked Bag

A well-balanced checked bag should be 50 percent dedicated to your personal style—i.e., cute outfits for photos and stylish shoes for any night out—and 50 percent dedicated to function. Remember that international travel takes you to places you don’t normally go (like waterfall trails or windy archeological sites), so you should have a few key pieces that will keep you warm, will dry fast if you do get wet, and can be worn multiple times without needing a wash. If you’re looking to secure a checked bag for your next trip, check out our guide to the best checked luggage .

A TSA-Approved Luggage Lock

Forge cable lock.

Even if your checked luggage already has a TSA-approved lock built in, it never hurts to have a spare. Cable locks are preferable because they’re easier to get on and off than traditional metal U-lock. Forge’s cable locks, which we named one of the best TSA-approved luggage locks on the market, comes in packs of four, so you’ll have a lock for your whole family or just extra to spare. Approval is assured when you see the red Travel Sentry logo on a lock like this one. This model also stands apart from the rest due to its side window, which makes it easier to read the combination.

Dry Shampoo

Act+acre fulvic acid volumizing shampoo.

On your roughest travel days, you might not always have time for a shower—but that’s why dry shampoo exists. Most dry shampoos come in aerosol cans, but those can be tricky when traveling internationally. I suggest opting for something like Act+Acre’s Fulvic Acid Volumizing Dry Shampoo, which is a plant-based powder product (with a pump design) that absorbs excess oil.

Leave-In Conditioner

Cocunat curl moisturizer.

If you have curly hair like I do, a leave-in conditioner like Cocunat’s Curl Moisturizer can reset your locks in a pinch.

Venture Large Body Wipes

Wet wipes are another thing you’ll be grateful to have in case you find yourself in between showers for longer than you’d like. You can make do with a travel-sized pack or go all-in with these full-body wipes made of biodegradable material.

A Biodegradable Folding Travel Toothbrush

Ecogotravel bamboo foldable toothbrush.

Investing in a pack of these is a wise choice—its ingenious design cuts the size of this toothbrush in half while protecting the bristles from getting mixed up with your other toiletries. There are plastic versions with a similar idea, but the bamboo material is the more sustainable and guilt-free choice.

Versatile Quick-Drying Travel Shoes

Tropicfeel all-terrain.

When it first launched, travel brand Tropicfeel went viral on Kickstarter for its lightweight design. While this model rethinks the travel shoe for the rugged outdoors—thicker soles and a better grip—they still feel incredibly lightweight both on and off your feet. The waterproof features lead the way with a quick-drying design that prioritizes drainage and breathability. It’s an excellent hiking shoe that can handle any day of long walking in any environment.

A Comfortable Sweatshirt

The north face men’s mountain sweatshirt.

If you’re in the market for a new favorite hoodie or sweatshirt, prioritize something lightweight, warm and stylish. The men’s sweatshirt has a water-repellant finish and the insulation technology ensures warmth without adding too much bulk.

A Waffle-Knit Women's Hoodie

The north face women’s chabot hoodie.

The Chabot Hoodie, also from The North Face, can add an interesting texture to your look with a waffle-knit pattern and bold color options that are easy to style.

A Packable Rain Jacket For Men

Helly Hansen

Helly Hansen Men’s Loke Shell Jacket

You should never rule out the chance of rain on an international trip, but you don’t have to dedicate too much checked-bag space to your rain jacket either. This jacket can be folded down into its pocket and zips closed to form one tight little parcel that stays out of the way when you don’t need it. When you do need it, the waterproof material effectively locks out moisture, but there are vent zippers if you feel you’re starting to overheat.

A Packable Rain Jacket For Women

Helly hansen women’s loke shell jacket.

The women’s style is made from the same waterproof material and offers a flattering, slimmer cut.

A Moisture-Wicking T-Shirt For Women

Vuori Clothing

Vuori Energy Top For Women

A solid travel t-shirt that you can wear over and over again is worth investing in, and the Vuori Energy Top has been a staple of my suitcase for years. The tank-style cut adds a bit of style to any basic pair of jeans or leggings and the ultra soft moisture-wicking material has yet to lose its silky feel after years of wear.

A Moisture Wicking T-Shirt For Men

Vuori strato tech tee for men.

The men’s style has a more traditional cut but offers the same soft and quick-drying fabric, as well as a large variety of color choices.

Khaki 2-In-1 Outdoor Pants And Shorts

Tropicfeel protravel women’s zip-off pants.

Versatility, flatterability, and pockets? Say no more. International travel is all about adaptability, especially if you’ll be spending time outdoors. Zip-off pants have been around for a while and often get a reputation for being dorky, but the automatically adjusting waist belt makes this pair quite flattering. The breathable waterproof material also packs down incredibly small and takes up minimal suitcase space, while the pant legs are very easy to zip back on while you’re still wearing the shorts. As a bonus, the line where the zippers are is not as noticeable as you’d expect.

How We Chose Items For An International Travel Packing List

To select the essentials for a trip abroad, we tapped the expertise of freelance travel writer Jamie Ditaranto . Along with contributing to Forbes Vetted, Ditaranto has spent the last eight years writing travel content for Condé Nast Traveler , Travel + Leisure , National Geographic and more. She has lived in Mexico, Spain, Portugal and Brazil and has visited all seven continents.

As a writer who has taken more international than domestic flights in her life, Ditaranto put her first-hand expertise to the test for this story. When selecting the items for this packing list, she tested multiple products and considered the weight, size and durability of each. As an adventure lover, she especially noted the durability of each product she tested, as she is always looking for multi-use items that can be taken from a day on the trails to an elegant night out.

Why Trust Forbes Vetted

From meticulously testing and reviewing the best luggage to bring with you to the airport to the best packing cubes to keep you organized, we at Forbes Vetted have dedicated ourselves to helping make travel easy. When it came time to put together an international travel packing list, we applied the same unyielding commitment to ensure that our readers have everything they need on hand to see the world stress-free.

We examined each contender on this list, closely examining materials and construction and testing them out on multiple trips. To make the cut for our international travel packing list, products were required to be useful, versatile and easy to carry, so that you can toss them in your carry-on or checked bag without adding any extra weight or bulk.

The Very Best Carry-on Luggage

From duffel bags and rolling suitcases to roomy backpacks..

As someone who hasn’t checked a bag in more than five years of travel across the U.S. and abroad, I’ve thought a lot about what makes a good piece of carry-on luggage. A summertime European vacation calls for a sturdy wheeled suitcase, whereas backpacks will suit more rugged trips. Either way, the best carry-ons should be both capacious and easy to keep organized, with handy pockets and compartments. I prefer a carry-on that looks good, too, as I often take it out and about with me on the last day of my trip.

When it comes to shopping for luggage — especially online — it’s tough to know where to look and whether a suitcase will fit everything that you need inside. Luckily, my colleagues and I have tested all of these suitcases and bags ourselves, while also seeking advice from travel experts and frequent fliers about what they recommend. While you’re here, I’ve also written guides to the best personal item bags , the best toiletry bottles , and the best Dopp kits for men .

What we’re looking for

Most major U.S. airlines agree on the limits of a carry-on’s size (22 inches long x 14 inches wide x 9 inches high, to be exact). All the luggage on our list meets those requirements, so I’ve instead specified liter capacity.

Hard-sided or soft-sided

All the cases featured here have spinner wheels, making them easier to maneuver, and most of them are hard-sided. With bags (which on this list, are all soft-sided), I’ve specified which kinds of straps and padding they have, as you’ll need to think about how they distribute the weight of your stuff.

Compartments

Again, this comes down to personal preference, and you may have your own system to keep your essentials organized. But if you’re anything like me and you need to frantically check for your passport every five minutes, various pockets are really handy. They’ll also help you easily grab your laptop and liquids when heading through security.

I’ve highlighted the warranty on each carry-on and the kinds of damage it covers. Most companies I’ve listed will fix faults that are due to manufacturing defects, but general wear and tear isn’t covered.

Best carry-on overall

Away The Carry-on

Dimensions: 39.8 liter | Hard-sided or soft-sided: Hard-sided | Compartments: Organizational compartments, laundry bag | Warranty: Lifetime warranty

The Away carry-on has been recommended to us time and time (and time) again, prompting my fellow Strategist writer Rachael Griffiths to try one out for herself. She already knew the suitcase had 360-degree spinner wheels, a polycarbonate shell, built-in dividers, and dimensions that match the airline guidance for a carry-on-size case. As for its capacity, she was able to roll and pack three tops, a pair of jeans, a skirt, a dress, two bikinis, underwear, socks, and pajamas in the secondary compartment. On the other side, she put a bulkier sweater , a weekend’s worth of toiletries (including her entire skin-care routine), some trainers, and an AirWrap. “Not only did it all slot in with plenty of space, but I also appreciated the built-in laundry bag for my dirty clothes,” she says.

The Away Carry On’s spinner wheels are perhaps its most underrated design feature. Griffiths’s street in London is cobblestoned, so she previously dreaded lugging suitcases along it. “But the sturdy wheels meant the Away didn’t rattle as much as I’d anticipated,” she says. And on flat surfaces, “just a flick from my finger sent the case gliding.”

The brand’s warranty is also worth noting. Strategist editor Maxine Builder’s internal zipper broke in March 2019, and she emailed Away to ask if this damage was covered. “There was a fair bit of back-and-forth over the next four months,” she says. “But I ended up with a replacement suitcase in exactly the same limited-edition colorway with the same hand-painted monogram, all for free.”

If you’re traveling domestic — and not across Europe, where carry-on allowances are smaller — consider the Away Bigger Carry-On . It’s slightly roomier at 47.9 liters, meaning you can squeeze that extra sweater or spare pair of shoes inside.

Best less expensive carry-on case

Amazon Basics Hardside Carry-on Spinner Suitcase

Capacity: 37 liter | Hard-sided or soft-sided: Hard-sided | Compartments: Compressed compartments | Warranty: Three-year warranty

This budget-friendly case is a favorite of writer Robin Reetz . It’s cheaper than many polycarbonate options because it’s made from ABS, which is a less durable plastic. But when Griffiths tested it, she was struck by how durable the shell felt (and even punched it a few times for good measure, to a satisfying thud sound).

Although the case is made of cheaper materials, both Reetz and Griffiths found that its compartments and 360-degree spinner wheels perform very well. “It’s really perfect for a weekend or a four-to-five-day trip,” Reetz says. “I’ve traveled recently with friends who have Away and Delsey luggage, and all of them are now thinking about getting this bag.” It feels noticeably smaller, though, and as Griffiths was attempting to squeeze her boots inside, she did find herself longing for the extra few liters of her Away case.

Best roomy polycarbonate carry-on case

July Carry On

Capacity: 46 liter | Hard-sided or soft-sided: Hard-sided | Compartments: Hidden laundry bag | Warranty: Lifetime warranty

Meanwhile, Strategist associate editor Jenna Milliner-Waddell favors this polycarbonate case from July. “I’ve never had an issue with mine fitting in an overhead cabin, and it’s been roomy enough to hold clothes for an outfit-change-heavy weekend in Miami and a weeklong trip to my parents’ house over the holidays,” she says. She’s also impressed by the bag’s silent wheels: “I used to only Uber to JFK because dragging my suitcase to the subway and getting stuck on every uneven patch of sidewalk in Brooklyn was infuriating. Now I have no problem rolling it wherever.” Even though it’s on the larger side — when Griffiths tested it, she had room for an extra pair of boots as well as her regular packing list — the bag just about squeezes through airline carry-on restrictions. It also comes with an ejectable battery (which had more than enough juice to fully recharge my iPhone 13). Much like the Away, the July case is easy to wipe clean, but its color range has a little more to offer — particularly its seasonal shades, which right now include a dreamy sky blue and neon green.

Best statusy polycarbonate carry-on case

Rimowa Essential Cabin Case

Capacity: 37 liter | Hard-sided or soft-sided: Hard-sided | Compartments: Flexible compartments | Warranty: Limited lifetime warranty

A Rimowa case is like the Frette sheets of luggage: luxurious but expensive. Part of the luxury is how it streamlines common annoyances. It slots seamlessly into overhead bins and glides through the airport on its resilient spinner wheels. Taymoor Atighetchi , the founder and CEO of Papier , put it simply: “Nothing beats Rimowa’s smooth wheels.”

You also get the brand’s Multiwheel system, adjustable dividers, a sturdy telescopic handle, and TSA-approved locks. The Essential Cabin’s polycarbonate shell makes it much lighter than a classic aluminum Rimowa. This means you can almost treat it like a checked bag, without the weight, according to fashion content creator Isabel Tan , who recently squeezed 15 outfits into hers for a trip to Bali. Stylist Tina Leung , who fills her case to the brim, agrees. Like Away, Rimowa offers a lifetime guarantee on its cases, and Leung told us that almost every destination she has traveled to has a place to pop in for repairs. “If the wheels break off or something, it’s so easy to just go and get it fixed,” she says. “There’s pretty much one in every major city.”

Best polycarbonate carry-on case for longer trips

Solgaard Carry-On Closet

Capacity: 39-liter | Hard-sided or soft-sided: Hard-sided | Compartments: Compression shelving | Warranty: Limited lifetime warranty

Solgaard’s closet case is an absolute revelation. I first heard about it from Kiki Reginato, New York Magazine’s senior director of e-commerce operations. “This case has space — and then some. I have the smallest one, and I’ve taken it on many ten-day trips ,” she says. The case has a set of compression compartments that unfold to create a makeshift closet — eliminating the need to unpack into a real closet. The Solgaard had space for the weekend essentials that Griffiths packed in the July and the Away (to recap: three tops, jeans, a skirt, a dress, two bikinis, underwear, socks, pajamas, a bulkier jumper, toiletries, trainers, and a hair dryer).

But it had an added bonus: When she tested it, she could clearly see where everything was. And compressing the clothes is satisfying, too. “Once you pack everything, you can pull the straps on the side and it presses everything into this compact mass of clothing,” says Reginato. “It’s kind of like a vacuum seal.” Most airlines worldwide accept her medium 39-liter bag, and you can take the large-size case on most U.S. airlines.

Best aluminum carry-on case

Away Carry-On Aluminum Edition

Capacity: 40.9 liter | CaseHard-sided or soft-sided: Hard-sided | Compartments: Laundry bag and compression bands | Warranty: Lifetime warranty

Aluminum cases have plenty of attractive qualities. They’re far more durable than both polycarbonate and soft-side cases , there’s less chance they’ll crack, and they often use clamps instead of zips, making them even more secure . Less attractive, though, is their price point — the classic Rimowa aluminum case is an eye-watering $1,500.

But just like its polycarbonate case, the Away aluminum version is worth the money: It actually has the same features as the more expensive Rimowa for a fraction of the price . That includes the sturdy shell and clamp closing — which travel writer Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon says are ultra-secure — as well as the spinner wheels, telescopic handle, and built-in lock that I like so much about the original Away case. All in all, it’s a great more affordable option for any travelers who have their heart set on aluminum. Just remember that metal suitcases are a few pounds heavier than their plastic counterparts.

Best soft-side carry-on case

Victorinox Crosslight Softside Case

Capacity: 39 liter | Hard-sided or soft-sided: Soft sided | Compartments: Zip pockets and removable toiletry bag | Warranty: Ten years

Victorinox is best known for knives ( we’ve featured several on the Strategist ), but its luggage is also known for being equally utilitarian — simple and durable. “I swear by a soft-shell bag over a hard shell,” says Jessie Hyman , co-founder of Pruzan Running . “It takes up less space in the hotel room because you don’t need to lay it flat to access what’s inside.” Hyman travels with the Victorinox specifically because of its roomy capacity and squishy recycled polyester exterior. “I have always managed to squeeze in a vacation purchase inside this bag since it expands and compresses,” she says. “It’s actually converted me to be more of a carry-on gal than before.”

Best less-expensive soft-side carry-on case

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Softside Lightweight Expandable Upright Luggage

Capacity: 39 liter | Hard-sided or soft-sided: Soft sided | Compartments: Two exterior compartments, lid pocket, and device pocket | Warranty: Five years

TripSavvy’s former general manager Molly Fergus is a big fan of this “basic but effective” suitcase. Strategist readers are too: It’s one of the best-selling picks in our story on the best rolling luggage , while also being a best seller from our Travel 100 (a list of all the best travel items we’ve ever written about.) As it’s a soft-side, Fergus is able to squeeze her clothes and essentials inside, and she says that the wheels are tough enough to be “dragged across sand, dirt, and cobblestones.” If the wheels aren’t up to scratch, though, they and the zips and handles are covered under the Travelpro five-year warranty.

Best mixed-material carry-on case

Calpak Hue Carry-On Luggage with Hardshell Pocket

Capacity: 38 liter | Hard-sided or soft-sided: Hard-sided shell with soft-sided pockets | Compartments: Dedicated laptop pocket | Warranty: Two-year warranty for manufacturing faults

This case’s shell and wheels are hardy, and the pocket is “great to quickly tuck in your laptop and get it out fast through security,” says Brittany Allyn, founder of Thirty Waves . It also rolls along quickly and smoothly. As Allyn puts it, “having a bag that can fit as much as possible (because I’m an overpacker and not afraid to say so) and can get me to my gate ASAP is most important.” The bag is also a tried and tested favorite of Strategist deals editor Sam Daly, who’s been traveling with it since 2019. Daly appreciates the steadfast lock and a small but mighty selection of colorways (the sage green looks similar to Rimowa’s Bamboo).

Best carry-on duffel bag

Patagonia Black Hole 40L Duffel Bag

Capacity: 40 liter | Hard-sided or soft-sided: Soft-sided with handles and shoulder straps | Compartments: Various handy pockets | Warranty: Lifetime warranty

We recently named the Black Hole by Patagonia the best overall weekend bag as praised by Strategist editors and frequent travelers. To give you an idea of how much you can fit inside, Pruzan Running co-founder Lexy Copithorne told us she packed “everything for a two-week trip, including city and surfwear” inside her Black Hole. “That included two sweaters, several fitted tanks and running sets, two pairs of sneakers, boots, a few swimsuits, and my toiletry bag,” she says. While the bag is lightweight (at less than three pounds) and water resistant thanks to a waxy coating, the strap design is what makes it a thoughtful travel companion. If you’ll be trekking far, the over-the-shoulder strap can be switched out for backpack straps to give your shoulders a respite.

Best carry-on backpack for short trips

Cotopaxi Allpa 35 L Del Día Travel Pack

Capacity: 35 liter | Hard-sided or soft-sided: Soft-sided with shoulder straps | Case vs. bag: Bag with shoulder straps | Compartments: Mesh packing cubes | Warranty: One-year return period

The Cotopaxi Allpa is one of those rare products that’s as good as the people on TikTok say. Essentially a soft suitcase with backpack straps, it’s easy to organize as it has built-in packing cubes made from colorful see-through mesh and, unlike most backpacks that just unzip at the top, a butterfly opening allows you to see and rummage around those cubes easily. I took mine on a train trip through Morocco last summer, and it earned many admirers on the journey. Writer Margaret Eby used it to take a change of clothes, a laptop, snacks, a sun hat, a jewelry case, a day purse, and even a crochet project on a ten-day trip to Italy. And she says it fits comfortably under the seat in front of you — no squishing required.

Best carry-on backpack for long trips

Tortuga Travel Backpack 40L

Capacity: 40 liter | Hard-sided or soft-sided: Soft-sided with shoulder straps | Case vs. bag: Bag with shoulder straps | Compartments: Large main compartment, adjacent zipped mesh compartment, laptop sleeve | Warranty: Lifetime

Tortuga is another brand that makes excellent suitcase-style backpacks that are ideal for using as carry-on luggage. I’ve recently been testing out this bag, which lacks the Allpa’s built-in packing cubes but does include a more built-out laptop sleeve with a few zips and compartments for small items. It is also larger in capacity without being too heavy or unwieldy. The sternum straps are comfortable and can be tucked away when not in use, the bag’s rectangular shape means it slots easily into overhead lockers, and I like that the exterior fabric is waterproof and easy to wipe down.

An American Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport on Wednesday night over a “possible mechanical issue,” according to KTLA .

The flight, which was arriving from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, safely landed at LAX on Runway 25 around 8:45 p.m., an official from American Airlines told the outlet.

American Airlines flight 345 on the runway at LAX after making an emergency landing Wednesday evening.

Passengers safely exited the Boeing aircraft through the jet bridge after the aircraft pulled into the gate.

There were no reports of injuries onboard, according to the outlet.

There were reports of a blown-out tire, but AA officials only cited the pilot’s claim of a “possible mechanical issue,” according to the outlet.

It remains to be seen what the issue was.

The scare is the latest in  a surfeit of mechanical and safety issues Boeing aircraft  have faced in the last two weeks — and the second aircraft to make an emergency landing at LAX in March.

There were reports of a blown-out tire, but AA officials only cited the pilot's claim of a "possible mechanical issue," according to the outlet.

A United Airlines flight from San Francisco to Japan diverted to  Los Angeles International Airport on March 7  after one of the landing gear on the Boeing 777-20 fell off after takeoff.

Distressing footage shows the plane losing one of its six tires on the left side as it ascended.

All 235 passengers, 10 flight attendants and four pilots on board safely landed at LAX.

On Monday, a United Airlines Boeing 777-300 aircraft suffered a midair fuel leak and was forced to make an emergency landing.

The AA flight was arriving from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport when it was forced to make an emergency landing.

United Airlines Flight 830 took off for a 14-hour journey from Sydney to San Francisco, but was redirected two hours into the flight over a “maintenance issue.”

Boeing said in a memo to employees on  Tuesday  that the company is implementing weekly compliance checks for every 737 work area and additional equipment audits to reduce quality problems.

John Barnett , a former Boeing quality inspector of three decades, was found dead from a “self-inflicted” gunshot wound in his truck in the parking lot of his South Carolina hotel on Saturday.

The engineer, who retired in 2017 , had provided his first testimony in a bombshell lawsuit against the company, the Charleston County coroner told the BBC.

These US Airlines Have Raised Their Checked Baggages Fees

There's a bit of bad news for all the overpackers out there: one by one, most major US airlines have quietly increased their checked baggage fees in 2024.

The nearly industry-wide price hike began in January when Alaska Airlines raised the cost of checking a first bag to $35 and a second bag to $45. Over the next month, JetBlue , American , and United followed suit, each raising their checked baggage fees by an average of $5 to $10.

And on March 5, Delta increased its checked bag fees by $5 for most US originating domestic and short-haul international routes, bringing the cost of checking a first and second bag to $35 and $45, respectively. The fee increase does not apply to tickets purchased before March 5 or checked bags between US/Canada and Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

The only exception remains Southwest, which has famously never charged for checked luggage. “Our two bags fly free policy is here to stay," a spokesperson for the airline tells Traveler.

These are the current baggage fees for each major US airline in 2024:

  • Alaska Airlines: First checked bag $35; second checked bag $45
  • American Airlines: First checked bag $35-$40; second checked bag $45
  • Delta Air Lines: First checked bag $35; second checked bag $45
  • Hawaiian Airlines: First checked bag $25-30; second checked bag $35-40
  • JetBlue Airways: First checked bag $35-$45; second checked bag $50-60
  • United Airlines: First checked bag $35-$40; second checked bag $45-50
  • Southwest Airlines: Each passenger gets two checked bags for free

So why, after years of charging $30 across the board, are airlines making it more expensive to check bags? JetBlue , for its part, says raising baggage fees is one step the company is taking in order to return to profitability and cover the cost of transporting bags amid inflationary pressures such as higher fuel and labor costs. The New York City-based carrier implemented the highest increase of the bunch, charging up to $45 for a first checked bag and $60 for a second.

“By adjusting fees for added services that only certain customers use, we can keep base fares low and ensure customer favorites like seatback TVs and high-speed Wi-Fi remain free for everyone,” JetBlue tells Traveler.

Alaska Airlines, which last raised its bag fees in December 2018, also cites rising operating costs as a driving force behind the fee increase. “Alaska Airlines is committed to providing exceptional service to our guests. As we navigate rising operating costs–including high fuel prices–we occasionally need to adjust our fee structure to maintain a high level of excellence in the service we provide,” the carrier says.

While there are staunch believers among the Traveler team that all you need is carry-on luggage, the good news is that if you must check a bag, there are a few sure-fire tactics to get around baggage fees.

Invest in luggage that makes packing light easy

The surest way to avoid checked bag fees is to not check a bag at all. Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, and Hawaiian Airlines offer one free carry-on (and one personal item) regardless of your cabin class; meanwhile, JetBlue and United restrict basic economy ticket holders to one personal item.

Invest in carry-on luggage that makes packing light a breeze—and don't underestimate what you can fit in your personal item , either. From hardshell rollers to lightweight garment bags, check out our favorite carry-on bags , tried and tested by Traveler editors.

Plan ahead to avoid extra fees

Prepaying online for a checked bag in advance of your flight—and making sure you follow all the airline's weight and size restrictions—can save you from paying extra at the airport .

Along with increasing the base cost of checking a bag in recent months, United and JetBlue also implemented new policies that charge passengers $5 to $10 extra for any bags checked within 24 hours of departure.

In a statement shared with Traveler, United said that while the airline is raising checked bag fees in North America for the first time in four years, United Chase credit card holders, MileagePlus Premier members, active military members, and customers traveling in premium cabins can still check a bag for free. Customers in most markets can receive a $5 discount if they prepay for their bags online at least 24 hours before their flight, they added.

Check your credit card benefits

The right credit card can save you from a myriad of travel fees, including fees associated with checked bags. Most airline-branded credit cards allow passengers to check at least one bag for free , as long as they're flying with the airline and purchased the ticket with the card.

Some of the best travel credit cards have no annual fee or low annual fees that are waived during the first year, meaning they essentially pay for themselves. From general travel rewards cards to airline-specific credit cards great for loyal fliers, these are the 8 favorite credit cards that Traveler editors use every day.

Airline status and cabin class

It may not come easy–or cheap—but frequent flyer status or a premium cabin class will often grant you “free” checked bags as well. For each airline's baggage policies by cabin, check their websites. Pro tip: always compare the fare difference between cabins like basic economy and premium economy —if it's equal or slightly more than the baggage fees you'd need to pay in the lower cabin, you might as well upgrade and enjoy the other perks, too.

Airlines post travel advisories for Denver International Airport, other Colorado airports, with snowstorm on the way

By Jesse Sarles

Updated on: March 12, 2024 / 3:58 PM MDT / CBS Colorado

Three of the largest airline carriers in Colorado issued travel advisories in advance of a storm system that is projected to bring major snow to the Centennial State.

Winter storm grounds 300 plus flights at Denver International Airport

Delta, United and Southwest Airlines both posted information for fliers on Tuesday morning. That came as CBS Colorado's forecasters in the First Alert Weather Center reported that atmospheric conditions are ripe for one of the biggest storms of the season. Some parts of the Denver metro area could see a foot of snow .

Southwest's advisory says flights to and from Denver International Airport -- as well as the airports in Colorado Springs and Steamboat Springs -- could be affected.
